Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching

Life has been a bit chaotic lately, and that means I’ve not only fallen behind on shows I’m watching, but also haven’t been able to pick up as many new shows as I’d otherwise like to. But there are some promising new titles in this bunch, and I’m determined to get a taste of everything on my plate… soon… someday… –javabeans

Father Is Strange: Oh, thank goodness for a reprieve in Joong-hee’s angst! He’ll have some image cleanup on his hands with the latest kerfuffle, but at least his inner anguish gets a break, especially knowing that the attraction is mutual! I don’t envy any of the Byuns for when the truth finally comes out, but if it had to be anyone, I’m glad it’s levelheaded Unni who’s putting the pieces together, whom I can trust to be responsible with her discoveries.

Criminal Minds: It seems this is poised to become a big hit, and I liked what I saw and found it compelling once the case really got going, but I did have a few mitigating thoughts: First, that it actually didn’t look as sleek and fancily produced as I expected it to, coming from this director and tvN; second, that it was so straightforwardly procedural that I found it a bit dry and actually wished for more K-drama melo excitement (I know!); and third, that if it weren’t for Lee Jun-ki and Sohn Hyun-joo (Moon Chae-won to a lesser extent), I wouldn’t be nearly as into it. The Lee Jun-ki magic really makes up for a lot, though; whenever he’s onscreen I feel particularly sucked in, and then the magnetism sort of dissipates once he’s offscreen again. At least there’s a simple solution to that, though! ALL LEE JUN-KI, ALL THE TIME.

Reunited Worlds: Watching this drama sort of feels like how you might feel after you’ve had your heart broken, recovered from it, and then find yourself potentially falling again. By which I mean: I’m a little scared to fall in love because I have the sinking feeling Yeo Jin-gu might not be alive at the end of it, and I feel like I’m going to be a blubbery mess if this drama resolves the way I think it may. And yet, I can’t help myself from feeling drawn in anyway. I suddenly feel a lot of sympathy for those stupid moths and their flames.

Bride of the Water God 2017: I like the small character interactions and introspective moments, but I feel like the mythology is trying to be pretty ambitious and it’s not quite coming through. Don’t get me wrong, I like that the mythos seems complex and deep—I just think it’s being conveyed in choppy bursts of information, enough to make me wonder if I accidentally skipped a scene where they explained everything. If they were just a little less cryptic, I think it would do them a world of good.

School 2017: Ugh, I love the rebel bad boy. Why do I always love the rebel bad boy? I’m so onboard with all of the developments this week—the heartbreaking backstory of the bus crash and the broken bromance, the budding friendship between our heroine and each of the boys, the blatant adorable flirting, Teacher’s lonely one-man demonstration against the stupid system. The first week was breezy, but now I’m super invested.

Falsify: That was a slick premiere episode. The corruption plot is like the 700th one this year alone, but I really like the journalism angle on this one. It beats lawyers and cops, at least in terms of freshness, and it has a great David and Goliath setup between the respectable (but totally corrupt) national newspaper and the trashy (but actually legit) tabloid run out of a storage container.

The Best Hit: The time travel made no sense on this show. But I was so smitten with Da-bong that my brain just sort of glossed over the big holes and smoothed out the jagged edges, leaving me with warm fuzzy feelings about the drama as a whole. For whatever reason, I was especially attached to this show and its goofy characters, and I found myself looking forward to it every week, so I’m particularly sad to see it end. Maybe I’ll have to go back and start watching 1 Night 2 Days to ease the loss.

Duel: You know, I was legitimately surprised that the finale was so satisfying. I guess I expected it to fail me in some way, but it was poignant and thoughtful and thrilling, and it wrapped up the clones’ stories with so much heart. What a breakout for Yang Se-jong, who just ran away with the show, especially as the tortured, broken Evil Clone. That character deserves a prequel.

HeadsNo2

Forest of Secrets: That twist! My heart! Shi-mok! It’s so rare for a show to hinge on one mystery and be able to carry that through to the end without giving it away, but Forest trusts its audience and knows we’re along for the ride. What gets me about this drama every single week is that it’s so singular in its vision, and everything—everything—that happens on screen is in service to the story being told, and it’s a damn compelling story indeed. What a week for this show. What a show!

Falsify: I don’t know if it’s corruption fatigue, but this show feels a bit phoned-in, at least plotwise. I feel like I’ve seen this show before, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but I don’t feel compelled by what’s happening on screen. It’s a classic revenge/takedown scheme with a good actor at its core, but I’m waiting to see what else it has to offer.

The King Loves: Ho-hum politicking, extreme third wheeling.

Reunited Worlds: Maybe my disconnect with this show is that I just can’t buy the lack of gravitas whenever Hae-sung reunites with someone who thought he was dead, and life just resumes as normal afterward. It feels so out of step with how you’d think that reunion should go—not that there should be wailing and gnashing of teeth, but if you saw someone who died back and in the flesh, would you just be like, “Cool, stay at my house, eat my food, let’s not question how any of this is happening?” I find the fantasy elements interesting, but I feel like the show is deliberately pulling its emotional punches, which seems like a missed opportunity. Then again, maybe that’s not what this show is about, and I’m focusing on the wrong thing.

Criminal Minds: I like it so far. I don’t love it yet, and I’m a little over the hotheaded detective type , but the directing is slick and the mood is dark enough to appeal to my dark soul.

New Journey to the West: Life has been extra busy for me the past month, which means I’ve fallen veeerrry far behind on all the dramas I’d previously been watching. When face with the choice to pick-up one of the many dramas that have already ended or start fresh with one of the many dramas that have recently premiered, I fled to the comforting arms of variety which demands nothing from me except to enjoy some celebrities playing goofy games in pretty scenery. Kyuhyun has become my favorite member, so I’m pleased that Na PD managed to film another season with him before Kyuhyun enlisted. I’m also thrilled that the boys have managed to outsmart the production crew this season, first by Mino perfectly selecting the expensive sport cars in the spin-for-a-prize, and then by Kyuhyun actually winning the soju game (Na PD’s reaction to both of those incidents is priceless!). I celebrated along with the guys when they finally obtained all seven dragon balls, and I hope there’s actually going to be a Winner Youth Over Flowers!

chickachunga

Forest of Secrets: Episode 14 was one of the finest hours of television I’ve ever seen and that final airport chase scene? Wow, it was the airport chase scene to end all airport chase scenes. I just sat in my room, in awe, and applauded after the episode ended — who does that?! We all knew you-know-who would get caught, but it was such a thrilling moment watching him run for his life and then waver with his clenched fist held up high, unable to strike Yeo-jin as if the finality of the whole situation struck him in that precise moment. And that sweater scene where memories of Eun-soo suddenly flooded Shi-mok’s mind was so beautifully simple and devastating. I bow at the altar of writer Lee Soo-yeon’s brilliance. Can you believe this is her first drama series? Anticipation is at peak level for the final two episodes even though I’m nowhere near ready to bid the show farewell!

The King Loves: Meh. I tried it out. As expected, very pretty at times, but nothing special (plot-wise or performance-wise) so far. Maybe I’ll watch one more week to see if anything interesting happens.

Laica

Currently recapping: Forest of Secrets

Father Is Strange: Finally, Mi-young knows the truth, and we can have adorable couple moments without the ickyness and guilt! I can understand why Joong-hee feels so reluctant to take decisive action and reveal Mom and Dad’s crimes, but I’m also tired of all the secrets, so I’m glad Hye-young is on the case. If anyone can help untangle this mess and hopefully figure out a way to minimize the damage for all involved, it will be her. I just hope Joong-hee’s confrontation with the sleazy director doesn’t blow up in his face in a really bad way—the poor guy has enough to deal with already. Also, Ra-young’s low-key war with Chul-soo’s dad is hilarious. I agree with Young-hee—he should just give up and accept her as his future daughter-in-law (and put her on track for a sales manager).

Sassy Go Go: Friends have been recommending this to me for years, and I finally found time to watch it. I loved everything about this one. It perfectly exemplifies what I love most about high school dramas: the intense emotional relationships, whether romantic or platonic; the feeling of powerless in the face of an unjust adult world; the all-in, fearless way teenagers can have of going after their dreams and believing in their friends, regardless of what tomorrow may hold. I already loved Jung Eun-ji and Ji Soo, but now I love them even moooooore, and I’m adding Lee Won-geun to my collection of puppies! ♥

NOBUTA WO PRODUCE - Episode 09 and 10 Today. This show has strong story and your lonely japanese characters. A bit slow and Direction literally gives eye strain and headache sometimes. Those fast-motion slow-motion scenes. 8/10
Only a japanese drama can move my heart.

STRANGER - Episode 09-11 were a bit slow and episode 14 has 1 good escape-catch action scene. And episode was emotional for characters, not for me. 8/10. From 8.5 to 8

School 2017 - I will always criticize this show. I have developed this habit of watching bad Media content. Especially bad Korean media. Scriptwriter needs to be fired. What kind of mess this is? There are handful scenes you appreciate and enjoy. Rest of it enrages you and you want throw rotten tomatoes at the creators. Then there atrocious efforts to copy content from earlier School-Shows.
Eun Hoo alone and Eun-Ho with Tae-Woon is saving this Ridiculous show. 6/10

Falsify - messed up 1st week. Nam goong min character trying to be goofy in a tensed atmosphere. Chief kim style contrived scenarios and heroics. Too much happening. Same cliche He/She/They/ and everyone being corrupt and competent prosecution and police force. 6/10

Criminal Minds - Too talkative characters. Gary Stu profilers. Flashy team with little results. At times i was like Shut up and do the job. Music is cool. Hero is good looking and looks interested in his role. Rest of it is MEH. 6/10

Me too! This season was really the funniest, and it was awesome to discover Song Mino's aptitude for variety and how all the members just meshed together, including the staff ❤ I want Kyuhyun's wish for 2019 to happen too! Lol. My absolute fave of Na PD ever was that absolutely epic fail of a game with Song-karak and the Porsche! Plus he had to kneel and apologize! Lol. And yes to WINNER Youth Over Flowers too!

Na PD was so cute at that time, (actually, he's consistently cute); he was like a helpless innocent child begging his hyungs to let him off the hook just once ^^

and i definitely agree, their strong bond is really a beautiful thing and the show is just full of laughter and warmth; yep! i've grown to love it ^^

Seven Day Queen: Where do I begin? I can’t believe or should I say I don’t want to believe that this masterpiece is about to end. I really love this show and I know even without watching the finale yet that it will definitely be on my top 5 list of all-time. I’m well aware that I sign up for a great heartbreak when I decided to watch this show but I never thought that it’ll be this worth it. Everything is good about this drama. EVERY LITTLE THING! I guess it will take time for me to finally let it go once it ended but at least I can re-watch it all I want. Episode 18 left me empty. So empty! This is the very first time that I feel this way when the hero finally takes the throne (mostly in Sageuk is what I’m referring), it’s a poison for the Prince now a King and CK’s relationship. I’m not hoping for a happy ending anymore because I don’t want to hurt myself more but please give us at least a smooth one.

The King Loves: The CP’s smile is more than enough to get me watching this show; I guess I just really love him. HAHA! Well, so far I like San’s character as a strong heroine and I hope it’ll not change. I hate to admit it but the thing with the father(king) and son(prince) angst gets really tiring or maybe I’ve seen too many dramas with the same story that’s why but I hope the king will get to fully trust his son soon enough before it gets really unacceptable anymore. I still don’t feel the chemistry between the leads but it may be too early for that so I’ll still check what’s going to happen.

Bride of the Water God: This show is still very entertaining so far but I think So Ah starting to fall for Ha Baek will make expected turns, she’ll have a fight with herself and try to avoid our gorgeous water god and him on the other side will be confused what’s happening to her and eventually fall for her as well then one day one of them will confess first. End. Lol! Not that I’m expecting something different for a rom-com fantasy right? I just hope it’ll still be a wonderful ride anyway. I’m more interested with the story about the gods and the stones than the love story in this show.

Reunited Worlds: The main question I have on mind so far is why HS have some kind of superpowers? I want a good explanation for it. The reunion of the squad, aww. I cried! Their friendship is real goals and honestly I want more scenes of them than JW and HS, I just don’t feel the need to be in their ship just yet and I like young Jung Woon and YJG’s chemistry more that’s why I’m loving the flashbacks and all.

Moorim School: This show doesn’t disappoint me yet. I’m on episode 9 and I still like how it’s going. Too bad I can feel and I know that the bromance will not last that long with Ariel around and I can also that there’s something about their family that will lead them to be apart. I hope I’m not right but I have a strong feeling about it. I like the school feels with a taste of mystery and fantasy, I want to binge-watch it and see how this drama...

I want to learn more about the "superpowers" and why aren't people asking more questions ? Even Hae Sung just goes along with it. And yes to more scenes with all the friends. The reunion was so good so other scenes will be as interesting.

FIS - looking forward how we'll all move forward with JH's birth secret.

School 2017 - Mori aka Tae Swoon locked me in. Sejong has caught my interest since last year for some reason. But please drama, no more new plots.

Criminal Minds - enjoyed it but I'd like to re-echo what Javabeans said, let's keep LJG on screen all the time!

NJTTW S4 - love love this show as always.

Duel - Sejong has totally captured me.

FoS - I'm so torn if I wanted to prolong it more. So good!

same here! I'm watching the last episode of "Forest of Secrets", will finish "Tunnel" (which is good, but not AS good as FoS) and then dive straight into rom-com, because NOTHING can possibly compare to how well-written and well-acted-out FoS is.

I've never wished for a season 2 on kdramas... but now... pleeeeaaaaase !!

I can't watch anything else at the moment, bc NOTHING compares.

I'm so ready for the finale, but sad to let it go.

I'm with you on that one. So sad it's ending this weekend. I knew it was excellent, but after watching some outtakes of the actor who plays Shi Mok laugh and talk I realized what a truly great actor he is when I see him on screen and he is so frozen emotionally. I thought maybe he was that way all the time. WOW
Now I need to see him in something else. Any suggestions?

I am a fan of too eventhough this is the first time I watch his acting. I heard his great in God's Gift but hesitant to start after hearing the bad ending. Is it really that 'bad'?

1

I was not a big fan of God's Gift, but he was the best thing about that show.

3

God's Gift is one of my favorite shows. It didn't end quite the way I wanted it to end, but that didn't ruin the show for me. I still watched it again from the beginning (and I'm thinking about another pass). Lee Bo Young is also really good in that.

2

Cho Seung-woo's indeed an amazing actor. I loved him since his first movie, "Chunhyang" and follow his projects since then. He certainly never dissapointed. He can be anyone. But mostly he's doing movies, so for his different characters you I reccomend you The Classic or Lovepobhia (charming yet romantic), Tazza the high rollers (gambler), Marathon (autistic boy), Go Go 70s (band singer)

i'm a romcom/fantasy saeguk kind of girl, i guess marathon works when you're trying/attempting a drama of different genre. i don't have any favourite among the cast, they are familiar faces but not having any allergy to any of them is a huge plus. shitty hunter prosecutor does make me wanna punch and/or strangle him in majority of his scenes tho

It's refreshing (and a little surprising) that so many people seem to love it so much. I was worried its subtle charms would not appeal to everyone or that people would dislike Bae Doo Na and Jo Seung Woo for some inexplicable reason. (How could you dislike them?! How?!) At the risk of seeming like I hate different opinions, which I don't, it is kind of fun to read so many comments I wholeheartedly agree with.

Yes! Read some books! If you like short stories, I would recommend "what it means when a man falls from the sky" by Lesley Nneka Arimah. I also finished "American Gods" by Neil Gaiman recently. It's pretty strange, dark and thrilling but quite a captivating read. Go on some real world adventures. Explore a new part of town. Maybe try a new to you Korean restaurant ?I was on a serious slump after weightlifting fairy but realized after a while I should use the time to check in with my life and reclaim my time. It made me mindful of how much time I spent watching shows. The cool thing about my slump is that I FINALLY read the Harry Potter series (I know! I'm super late to the party). All this to say a drama slump is what you make of it. Do some fun, new real world stuff. Dramaland will always be there

Sorry to interrupt. Which country are you in @azzo1 that there's no Korean resto? Just asking. :)

1

@ahjbundpc Oman, just googled Korean restaurants around me, it says there is one and only 20 minutes drive from home, should've done that sooner! LOL!

2

@azzo1 Yeyy good for you! We don't have much here as well. Great that you have one near your place! ;)

1

Great idea. I still keep my reading habits though it's a bit different now. Past 3 years I finish 4-6 books annually, prior to that I read up almost 12 annually. As much as I love my k entertainment, having activities outside of that is energizing. At the same time, it made me appreciate kdramas, k-shows all the more. Just in moderation.

That's a good idea; when you watch it someday, you can just marathon it. I don't know how some beanies started this show from the beginning because it would've been torturous waiting week after week for the next episode.

I was in a drama slump myself and just the thought of watching a legal drama didn't appeal to me at all (even though having both Cho Seung-Woo and Bae Doo-Na in one drama is a miracle), so I didn't watch FOS until it already aired more than half of its episodes. Thank goodness I waited! I only had to suffer 2 weeks waiting for 13-16.

And now I'm afraid of being in another drama slump after FOS ends O.O

After every great drama, comes the fear that nothing else can replace it.

It's hard being a drama addict.

I'm also in drama slump after Fight My Way and Best Hit ended. Actually this has been my few times this year, but I guess we just need to wait for new drama with our favorite oppa to come out to make us entertained again. Or like others said, sometimes it's just the timing, like after following a (or several) good shows, you don't want to part with them yet and we just have to wait it out.

I am currently rewatching FMW because the marathon experience differs from watching week by week, but I'm watching it casually while doing other things so I think when this second run ends, I am ready to say goodbye to Ae Ra and Dong Man to pick up a new crack of drama.

I have also downloaded 2 episodes of Forest of Secret, which I am sure would be great, and planning to watch and be captivated it next week.

I think Circle did this to me! I marathoned it last week while pausing my other dramas and when I finished it, I just couldn't go back to my dramas, I forced myself to finish The Best Hit!

Yes, I'm waiting (im)patiently for my Oppa to come back on my screen, there's Four Men and Cheese in the Trap-the movie, so I'll just wait!

I intrude a bit...personally I was enjoying SP until just before the noble idiocy started; I put it aside temporarily because I was too involved with Fight My Way to watch other dramas...and now I can't bring myself to pick it up again!! ? ? Having read the recaps I feel like it's not worth watching it! ?
But I feel a bit bad for all the actors, because I was enjoying their performances (and chemistry)!

I was enjoying it, but I had to put it on pause for a few weeks and I can't bring myself to pick it up!
I've tried watching it again and I felt the pace to be slow and I don't know if it's just me. I'm currently up to the part where Ji wook finds out that Bong Hee's dad may be involved in his dad's death. I've read this eps recap and it's heading straight to Bong Hee's noble idiocy, and I don't know if I can survive it.

Haha, the noble idiocy hasn't happened yet..but I know I'm heading in that territory and I don't know if I can go through that.
I've had it on pause for a while and it's hard to pick it back up. I've only got 5 eps to go (15-20) so I'm planning on finishing it.

Falsify : The premiere was good. Let's see what will happen.

Criminal Mind : I'm not on board yet but I will keep watching for now.

The King Loves : I don't know if it's because I had no expectation but I really like it ! The trio's friendship is really and I want to spend more time with them. Actually I'm hurting for Wang Rin he's always two steps behind.

Reunited Worlds : This show hurts so much that it feels so good ! Ooops that sounded weird.

Duel : It was such a good ride ! Yang Se Jong is amazing *-*

Forest of Secrets : I finally caught up to ep 14 ! Love it <3

School 2017 : There are more sub plots than I thought. Still bad boy Mori and Guitarist are stealing my heart.

The Best Hit : I binge watched just on time for the finale. It wasn't what I expected but it was entertaining.

Bride of the Water God : Still my laid back watch of the week.

Forest of Secrets The only Korean show I'm watching with full committment. So much love for this. Debating whether to marathon the last two episodes together or not.
Falsify Tried it, but kept getting distracted within the first 15 min... I might be a good show, but it didn't hook me.
Reunited Worlds Am a week behind, because I am visiting family this week.
Criminal Minds Been hesitant to start this, especially after the perfection of Forest of Secrets. I've read the comments on the recap, reactions seem to be mixed – seems people are only loving Lee Junki in it and beyond that there's nothing particulary good, new or all too worthwhile? LJK isn't enough for me too watch, I like him as an actor but somehow have ended up dropping his most of his dramas half way through. And same with MCW – I know she's supposed to be a decent actress, but I have never really connected to her characters?
School 2017 Dropped.
Overprotected Kahoku (J) Interesting first episode. Some characters (the parents, esp. the mother) are hard to believe, but since I'm pretty sure the drama will be about character growth – not just the lead couple's but everyone's – I'll bear with that for now.
I'm Sorry I Love You (J version) Waiting for subs. Quite like this so far, though I'm not sure I'm prepared for the sad ending (that I hear is in store).

You are so strong to try and hold of on FoS. Its the show that fills my brain the whole week after its finished. I have decided to savor it as it is delivered hot, unknown and totally unspoiled.

I wish everyone was watching this show (to give the networks the rational to do this level of work again and again and again. On the other hand I am so jealous of those who have not seen it yet. Imagine being able to gun this gem with new eyes later....

This week is a bit busy week for me, so I thank God that I don't have any weekends drama to catch up as I'm done with The Best Hit and Duel.

School 2017: The broken bromance revelation is kinda surprised me and I'm completely sold with this drama. It is easy and fluffy drama, just what I need from a drama though the whole school system is just doesn't make sense, but whatever.

Seven Day Queen: OMG, if there's a weekly award for which drama has the best episodes for the week, SDQ would win for sure. I'm still not fully recovered by episode 18. This drama makes me put high expectation on other saeguk dramas. It's beautifully written and all the actors are so great beyond words.

Criminal Minds: Watched the first two episodes, I would say it's quite interesting, but I'm not loving it yet. The profiling seems a bit bland to me, and the explanations that the show gives don't really convince me. I don't feel connected to any of the characters, but I'm still gonna give it a try for another few episodes.

Duel: Yes girlfriday, yes! I agree for Duel's evil clone prequel. I'd love to see Sung Hoon as the main character of his own life. Yang Se-jong is the best and I can't wait for Temperature of Love just to see him as a chef.

The King Loves: Love the trio, but can't help that I love Rin more! My heart is still safe at the moment, but I'm slowly preparing myself for heart break as I know that they won't be happy and carefree for a long time. The bad guy team is already making a scheme, so I need to prepare myself.

Reunited Worlds: I'm just glad that I could still watch the teenage version of Jung Won with Hae Sung. I love all of their moments and keep on wishing that if only I could watch this drama with the 2005 timeline instead.

I still haven't gotten a chance to start Falsify yet, and haven't watched BotWG ep 7-8. Habaek-nim, mianhae. I also haven't picked up those dramas that I've been put onhold (FOS, Lookout and My Only Love Song). This week has been a busy week for me and I'm still figuring out to juggle up my life schedule with kdrama schedule.

Saying goodbye to both Duel and The Best Hit. Those two aren't the best show out there and I wish they paced the story better, but it was still a good watching experience. And I'm content with how they wrapped things up.

Forest of Secrets blew my mind and heart this week and I don't know if I ever recover. Her death and his betrayal hurt like no other.

Enjoying School 2017. It was a bright rays of sun amidst all the darker shows I watch.

Bride of The Water God: It's like the writer has all the puzzle pieces but can't quite get them together the right way. I enjoy it and find it an easy watch but still, in the back of my mind, know it could be better. Oh and thanks to the beanies who responded to my "why does she have this profession?" What was said makes total sense.

Criminal Minds: Episode 2 is stronger than episode 1. I like procedurals and I find it fun to recognize certain aspects of the stories but never remember the twists and turns. (I have heard about one of the PDs quitting due to creative differences so I'm immediately lowering expectations for editing etc.)

School 2017: I was ready to drop mid-way through episode 3 when stuff finally started to happen.

Forest of Secrets: So if I didn't have experience with dramas going to crap in the last 2 episodes (heck, the last 20 minutes), I would feel a lot more comfortable. Could end up being one of the top 5 or so k-dramas I've watched but it ain't over til it's over.

The Best Hit: I feel like this show was a victim of the live shoot. It went to romance in a big way and while the couple were fine, it stopped being funny.....and it was so so funny. Still I have warm feelings for everyone and was content. Then I read someone's rant about all the issues with the plot, things not addressed or closed off or didn't make sense. All valid.

The King Loves: I'm behind but am charmed so far.

Suspicious Partner: I am finally back into this one. It should have been 16 episodes, not twenty. I had to do some skipping for about 4 episodes through all the unnecessary angst.

The Eternal Love (C-drama): Low budget, cliched story with some of the worst actors in co-starring roles and I actually can hear cars honking in the background when this is a historical. Don't care; I love the leads together and they bring the smexy. The episodes are only around a half hour so just fun and easy with no one taking this too seriously.

Criminal Mind: Like JB, the more Lee Jun Ki the better. Since this is a procedural crime drama, I am going in not to expect much of emotional connection but just for the excitement on solving cases and profiling and yes, LJK and his magic.

The King Loves: I want to like this show but I couldn't. I want to care yet I still can't. The plot and writing is consistent but something about the actors' performance where none of them are captivating enough to make me care. There is just a void on the emotional side.

7 Days Queen: This show is too much to handle and it's going to break my heart even more next week since I know Yeonsangun is to meet his time. Lee Dong Gun (and the writing) really gave magic to this character and it's so rare that I'm rooting for the famous tyrant in Korean history and has no care at all about Yeok or even Chae Kyung.

It's getting harder and harder to not see spoilers for Forest of Secrets. I am trying to avoid while looking at what everyone is wwatching. Not doing well in that area. ...I'm Ep 10. This one is good. No doubt about it. The next six episodes will determine if this will be my drama of the year (unless Age of Youth decides to make it two in a row).

I'm loving Reunited Worlds. I'm in it for the heart. Family and friends is what I'm after. I don't question how it works. Or how he came to have superpowers. It will be revealed at the end anyway. But if this is supposed to heal me. Then I'm here to be healed. Heal me!!!

Thanks to my habit of fast-forwarding, I get to watch a lot more dramas than the Dramabeans staff. Or should I say "skim through"? In any case, this Monday I've watched "The King Loves", "Bride of the Water God" and "School 2017". I don't really care for any of them, but they make for an entertaining hour or so.... I only watch enough to understand what's going on and stop for my favourite characters' scenes. On Wednesday, I considered myself lucky for understanding Korean well enough to continue watching Choi Min Soo in "Man who dies to live" despite the Muslim boycott. "Criminal minds"... Well, I watched worse shows for far less charismatic actors, so I'll watch this one as well. Fast-forwarding like crazy though... And finally, glorious weekend with "Woman of dignity" and "Forest of secrets"! No fast-forwarding there.

The whole downvote drama and aggressive comments made me quit this website ( yeah they removed the downvotes, but it was already too late as far as I'm concerned, the hurt was done). I'm just lurking now but I no longer feel it's a friendly community when you get aggressive comments even when you've got a neutral position. Still, it's good to get information about dramas so here's why I still visit in spite of myself.

But I did download the 3rd episode in the hope of having subtitles ( it's not my type of show but I was curious). They posted a comment explaining they didn't intend to insult or belittle anybody and it was for the sake of humor BUT that they had removed all controversial scenes and that you could no longer see them.

So here goes. If you got the earliest episode illegally, then, you'll get the controversial scenes but they're no longer available through legal platforms.

I also said goodbye to The best hit (DaBong will be sorely missed), and now watching Bride of the Water God only. It has the ingredients to be a perfect summer entertainment: a gorgeous Nam Joo Hyuk (that godly eyeliner...*sigh*), some mystery and adventure but without too much angst, some comedy...I'm also growing attached to Shin Se Kyung's character, I like that she is not the typical drama heroine that is never discouraged by the difficulties: So Ah is depressed by her situation and is resentful towards her father for treating her badly...all that is making her much more human and easy to root for her happiness.
And now that Habaek and So Ah seem to be trying to control their feelings towards the other, I can't wait to see how they will fail at keeping the distance. It seems that next week will bring a lot of cute couple moments, and hopefully a kiss!! I can't wait. ?

The only one I'm really watching with full dedication is Reunited Worlds and that too because of Yeo Jin Goo. I like seeing him smile! And although, the mystery behind is reappearance is a little hazy, I'm digging the different kinds of relationships between friends and family. With respect to that, the show is REALLY charming. Raise your hand if you cried when all the school buds got together and camped out in Jung Won's living room!

Bad Guys - I started watching this after it suddenly appeared on Netflix and I like it well enough that I am looking forward to Bad Guys 2. There's something really satisfying about seeing vigilantes handing out some well deserved punches, even though it brings up all sorts of questions about taking up the law in your own hands. Yes, it's a covert operation that the Police Chief is a 100% behind but somebody is bound to notice at some point right? For the record, I'm on ep 5 right now so maybe that will be a plot point soon?

Agree ? with @headsno2. Went I started Forest of Secrets, I'm a little bit worried on how will it sustain viewers' interest with one mystery. But how the writer expanded it into one big arc and intricately elaborated it turned the show into such a compelling watch and made me glued to the screen week in, week out.

Yeo-Jin (Bae Doo-Na) is so good. How can she be badass, adorable and goofy at the same time? I wish I had a colleague like her. We will be one happy bestie ??. Adding Shi Mok in (I bet both of us will have a lot of fun teasing him ?) we’ll be one happy trio. Now I want to find Doraemon’s Anywhere Door ? that will let me get into that dramaverse.

Dramas watched this week:

7DQ: no words since whatever I wanted to say have been said in superlative manners by other beanies. Well, ok, it's a masterpiece, that's what it is.

The Best Hit: totally agree on how nonsensical the time travel part is but you know what, binge-watching the Best Hit is just what I needed after the heart wrenching show that is 7DQ. And Da Bong is ?. YSY has a new fan in me.

Criminal Minds: caught the premiere. Although I found the editing choppy in some parts, I like it enough to continue. And of course there is Lee Jun Ki - enough said.

Forest of Secret: started binge-watching this excellent show. Now only up to Ep 4 - so gripping. Love the cinematography. Trying to avoid spoilers but knowing my true nature, I will seek them out sooner or later (oh who am I kidding, definitely sooner).

Fallen behind on this week's Reunited World & School 2017. But will definitely catch up soon. Who can resist Yeo Jin-Goo and Mori? ?

(And it feels 'safe' to fall for him now because unlike many of our favorites, he has finished army and won't be leaving us soon!)

I can't watch many dramas at any given time. I would be too tired at night that if I try to watch a drama, I would fall asleep midway. I catch up with everything on the weekend.

So, my weekend currently is filled to the brim with Oh Hae-young Again, School 2017, Father Is Strange, New Journey To The West 4 and SMTM 6. I like them all. Actually I started watching Goblin as well, but it kinda get left behind.....

The Best Hit was mostly warm, fuzzy, and adorable. Yoon Shi Yoon needs another drama fast!

Forest of Secrets is life right now. I have many ideas about how this will end: I suspect they're all wrong. When it does end, it'll stay with me for a long time, and I'll follow this writer forever! :-)

TEAM SAEGUK!!! Currently watching only saeguks...

*Seven Day Queen* - My love, my life...... Anyone else feeling numb by this week's episodes? I literally can feel the emptiness that CK and Prince felt after they won the battle. Because they have lost so much, and they are about to lose more.
How can you be so cruel show??
More importantly, how am I supposed to send you off next week...?

*The King Loves* - Sad that not many watch this one. I thought it was fun! Love Won-Rin friendship, adore the market/bridge scene between Won-San and I dig the way Won is presented, all those subtle hints of his tendency to be dark and twisted (like his comments on bird-caging San).
But agree with Heads that the politicking is a bit meh as of now. Hope they can step up their game next week!

The King Loves: pretty but nothing new. You can watch it or dont watch it, you dont really miss anything.

Bridge of Water God: I dont really follow the story anymore.

School: its ok but it feels off. i like kim se jung and the boys but not enough attachment or curiosity to follow the story.

falsify: maybe there are too many sageuk and legal drama this year so the drama feel like something been there done that.

7DQ: next week is the last. the show is still wonderful to watch but i dont cry as the beginning of the show

MWDTL: it was funny at the beginning, now is ok. the story is predictable but the acting is good

reunited world: i love the younger version scene and any yeo jin goo scene but really could skip the rest

criminal mind: why dont they blur the blood scene like Voice? im not into it so i could skip this one.

so i guess the shows i truly watching right now is: 7DQ, Forest and Woman of dignity. the rest i check them out, there is more miss than hit

Seven Day Queen has already become my all time favourite korean drama after healer. It's really good to the point that i take that as banchmark to watch any other saeguk n romance k-drama. Want to start criminal minds bcoz i love ljg due to my ears candy2 but something feel off. Mybe after 7DQ finishes its run i 'll watch it.

Thanks to Circle and 7DQ I've been dragged back into K-drama land. It's been a while since I've followed so many K-dramas at once, let alone managed to keep watching after 2 episodes haha.

Seven Day Queen - before this drama it seemed like no sageuk could hold a candle to The Princess' Man in my heart. 2 episodes left and no matter what happens, it's in my top 5 fav K-dramas (and also only the 2nd sageuk I've ever finished).

Criminal Minds - first 2 episodes were alright, nothing special yet that differentiates it from the usual crime/procedural dramas. I want to keep watching to see how it compares to the original and because of LJK and MCW.

Reunited Worlds - heartwarming and pleasant with some melodrama and mystery thrown in the mix. It does feel like a "healing" drama as promoted.

The King Loves - luckily I have not decided on a ship yet, so I am totally ok with either Won-San OR Rin-San and Won-Dan being the end game. I've seen too many fight for the throne dramas so hopefully they'll make it more compelling this time.

Signal - too high expectations from the reviews and have ended up dropping it...I couldn't connect with the characters, found the plot too convoluted and just couldn't keep focused when watching.

Duel, Seven Day Queen and Forest of Secrets just about broke my heart this week. How can shows be sooo good? And create angst and pathos so well?

My ultimate comfort food crush remains Father Is Strange. Part of me wishes that Hye Young unni would hurry and finish with her investigation and break the secrets wide open so Mi Young and Joong Hee can finally act on their feelings for each other.

I'm enjoying Bride of the Water God much more than the earlier episodes, but haven't developed any true fondness for The King Loves and School 2017.

I'm also seriously considering canceling my subscriptions to Deamafever and Viki due to a dearth of new dramas. Nor am I planning to sign on to a newer more expensive site that doesn't offer Roku services. Maybe this means that my kdrama loving days are coming to a close? Still waiting to see if there'll be any major changes in the next few weeks.

The only reason right now that I have not been thinking seriously about dropping DF and Viki is because of the OCN/Tvn dramas. They are getting a lot of new Chinese dramas, but to be honest - most Chinese dramas kind of suck. Taiwanese are slightly better, but not much. Neither have the "oomph" of k-dramas.

My "what we're watching" has been severely curtailed by Kocowa monopolizing at least 3 new dramas I was planning to watch. Appears they launched site prematurely...no Roku? Please! I'm wondering if ppl using the Apple TV app are having streaming issues. Where I live, I cannot stream adequately without my Roku box. Annoying, to put it mildly.

Haven't started any of the new shows. Caught the king loves episode 1 last week but haven't watched the second episode yet. Still watching seven day queen and forest of secrets. Can't believe they are both going to end. *sob*

Since none of the new shows seems to grab my interest, I actually thought of starting circle. But, real life has been too stressful, so I don't think I can get into intellectual dramas and give it the justified amount of attention it requires. But, forest of secrets is different, I am already too invested and actually don't want to let it go. So, anyway wanted to watch something light and fun and remembered reading beanies' comments here about marriage not dating being a angst-free fun rom-com. Already watched three episodes and it's so zippy and funny!

I was scared to watch this week's episodes of seven day queen and they were definitely difficult to watch. But, found episode 18 slightly fascinating. It's just interesting how people behave when they believe their end is near. It's like a study into the minds of people. But, out of everybody's choice, it was nok soo's that completely suprised me. Since she just manipulated and used yeongansun, I didn't really think she loved him. But, her still being with him after he strangled her should have made me realise her loyalty to him. Also, found the death of secretary Im befitting him, he was never loyal to anybody, so it is karmic that someone who has a served him for a long time wouldn't be loyal to him , either. i don't know what next week has in store for us.
I am hoping for a bearable sad ending, though I have no idea what that is.

I finished 3 dramas this week! Weirdly, I feel way better about The Best Hit now than I have for the last leg of its run, and I can let it go with a sense of satisfaction, although I'm not sure I will rewatch it. There were still things that disappointed me, but ultimately it delivered most of what I wanted, so I'm happy to send it off.

The same can't be said for Awl. I don't know why, but the finale left me with the feeling of something niggling at me, although logically everything made perfect sense. I even like how it ended, and yet I'm still frustrated? I definitely learnt a lot more about trade unions though than I had throughout my econs lessons in school, so that's a plus, considering it's my worst subject lol.

I love love love love love Rebel: Thief Who Stole The People. I sort of want to hide it away somewhere where nothing can ever tarnish its memory for me. While, as with every show, there will always be more things I wanted out of it, it delivered the most hopeful message it could've given its country at such a time with the new president being appointed and such. (Its last leg was aired during SK elections right?) I loved Ga-ryung, Nok-soo, Gil-hyun and the Amogae Avengers. I loved the rebellion, and how the show consistently hit home how it was driven by the people. I loved how Gil-dong was not the hero even though he was the main character of the story. I loved even the character of Soo-hak, who interestingly was a subversion of the typical sageuk hero. It also introduced me to Mori just in time for School 2017, a show which I'm enjoying immensely now.

Speaking of, School 2017 is the bomb. I'm with girlfriday, I have such a bad case of the bad boy crush. It's not been that long since I caught it so magnificently, funnily enough, but I suppose I'll just have to accept the fact that as much as I love my Ho-gu's and my Louie's, I love my Bidam's too. The way he looks at her every time just, SLAYS me. He's so smitten so as much as he's being an ass, which is 80% of the time, I can't help but love him anyway. Must. Resist. The Power of the Eyes. It doesn't help that I just love Eun-ho more every episode.

I'm sad that Woman of Dignity is not getting recapped anymore. I just started this show and am now fully caught up, thanks to cute gifs I saw on tumblr. It's sort of like an inverse Perfect Wife, where a poor lady intrudes onto the lives of a generally okay rich family, only there's a lot more drama because rich people and a lot of heartbreak and adultery and overall horrible-ness. But there's a cute supportive lawyer mate who's super unproblematic and cute. Also 80% of the show is just ladies everywhere and it's mostly just a lot of ladies on my screen, so I'm just gonna bask in the beauty as long as I can.

I might drop Reunited Worlds, sadly. Starting next week, I'm not sure I'll have enough time to watch shows, and I'd rather keep School...

Rebel is ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ Since it was aired early this year, other sageuk this year seem to be pale in comparison (well at least for me).

Seeing Mori in School 2017 currently made me doing some flashbacks with Rebel, not only with Mori but everything about it. It just has everything I love about sageuk. I hope this writer + PD will team up again next year hopefully, for another good sageuk.

I also started Woman of Dignity recently and I love it. I'm still behind of the latest epi, but I'll definitely watching this drama until the end!

I love School 2017 too!

Right? I agree with you, other sageuks seem to pale in comparison. It's weird, because I'm getting into Seven Day Queen now, just for curiosity's sake of it being set in the same time period. (Yay for my breaking my sageuk-aversion state!) I do appreciate Seven Day Queen on its own just because it knows how to deliver the heartbreak so well, and I actually kind of love the show despite serious early missteps in setting the relationship between the two lovebirds when they became adults that almost turned me away from the show entirely. Still, I can't help but question every now and then, what would Gil-dong and his merry band do? It shouldn't be a surprise to me that King Yeonsan is ruining every story he's in, lol, and my only small complaint in SDQ is that they made him too sympathetic for too long. He's historically the freaking worst king in Joseon history! Why would you ever want to make us on his side? ?

Haha! That's my opinion from day one.

I tried for the sake of YWJ, and I don't deny it is well made and beautifully done, performance by YWJ and PMY are also great (I saw some clip scenes) and I'm glad YWJ received much love, but the storyline didn't connect with me. I don't mind the heartbreak because it is a common thing in sageuk. Maybe if one day I am thirsty for purely heartbreaking & tragic love story, I'll probably watch it.

I feel the same way about 7DQ. I tried for YWJ, but it's best appreciated on a day when I want a tragic love story.

@greenfields I might love this drama back to 5 years ago. Now tragic love story or something like Romeo & Juliet is no longer makes sense for me ? Exception if both of leads are my bias, so I can't say no to their project lol.

"I suddenly feel a lot of sympathy for those stupid moths and their flames." Yep, that is exactly like I feel for Reunited Worlds. After last week's episode, I just don't see how he can stay alive. Call me pessimistic, but I call them like I see them. Still, I'm loving this who so much I can't stop watching. God, I even avoided Seven Day Queen because I knew the ending. But this show just blindsided me. I sincerely hope I'm wrong.

Forest of Secrets - I feel I need to rewatch all the previous episodes to catch all possible clues that I may have missed. I'm sad that Yoon turned out 'that' way. I really wanted the 'clues' to be red herrings. Did I miss the 'neon sign' reasons why he'd be the one linked to the crime? But it's definitely still so good. Be good to the end please!!!

BotWG - It failed to grip me after 4 episodes, so I'll wait a while and try again. As mentioned before. It has all the ingredients to be a great show, but there's something in the execution or the way the characters are portrayed that fails to bring that greatness to the fore.

Reunited Worlds - I like that there are unexpected or random funny moments that just get me laughing out loud. It's serious enough to feel unfluffy and light enough to not bog one down. Definitely the character development and interactions will be the main part to make or break this show. It's gotten me so invested in the uniting of the family again. It felt like the uniting of the friends would be the prefiguring of the coming together of the family for Hae Sung.

To add icing to the cake, there's still the mystery of how and why Hae Sung is back. Instead of dreading that he'll disappear, I've the other dread, that he'll never change while his friends grow old. That would be so sad too.

The King Loves - I normally cannot watch sageuk. However for writer Song Jin Nah, I started this and find it fun and straightfoward, and not too full of the convoluted politics (yet), therefore I'm still in. I hope there'll be clever twists in the love triangle so that the bromance never need suffer, while our goodies outwit the baddies. And it's great to see Yoona in a role that gives her more to do and in a fiercely undamsel-like character. ?

Meanwhile School 2017 is my third favorite. I really like TaeWoon and EunHo together.
I like Bride of the Water God next. The mystery is interesting but can be at times frustrating.
Last is Criminal Minds. Its not as polished as I expected it to be. I love the original and the k-remake is a good homage. But its not stealing my heart as of yet despite LJK and MCW in the cast.

Best Hit: I still don't get the "resolution" about the two Hyun-Jae's. Epilogue (featuring the surprisingly boring HJ+WS couple) aside, I loved how drama ended on the rooftop with our roommates and with reflections on basically giving everything your best shot.

Forest of Secrets: An incredible set of episodes this week. I agree with @chickachunga's assessment of Episode 14 being one of the finest hours of tv I've ever seen. That airport scene was particularly powerful. This drama is one of those rare ones where acting, direction, writing, and cast chemistry are all perfectly aligned - even between characters that barely interact on screen.

Bride of the Water God: I wish the other gods can be nicer to Hu Ye. Please, drama gods, don't let him be evil! I agree with @javabeans assessment about the mythology. I've forgotten why Habaek has to get those stones and why he's king or almost king.

School 2017: Much better than last week! Teacher Shim is a rockstar for running over what is probably 100 laps in 2 days. I did notice the number of demerit reports was reduced by almost 30% after his first day of running. He's winning everyone over!

Father is Strange: I'm also glad for the reprieve in the angst. So many great moments - MY finally knows they're not related and at least 1/2 of the pairing knows the feelings are mutual. YJ finally makes a sincere apology and the YJ and MY relationship is on the mend. The HY and mother-in-law team-up is awesome. I love how the in-law-wars have switched to RY and CS's dad, with RY displaying the confidence, cleverness, and resilience that her sister has. And JH and Papa Byun just slay my heart!

Seven Day Queen: What a story, I know I came for a heartbreak and a sad love story but I didn't think it will hurt this much.

Forest of Secret : I think the show has a good payoff, it's the kind of show that will feel complete when you stick out to the end and it will double the enjoyment so I hope the ending is good

The king loves : It's not really amazing but I enjoy it a lot, I think it because all that I watch this week been so heavy and character that looked at the world with positivity and just so happy. They have a lot of trouble but they always catch a break and the show is beautiful.

Criminal Minds - KR ver : hmm, even after ep 2, I find the scene that I like the most is the last scene when LJK profile someone, it so believable and the team has a little interaction. The other scene, deduction and story progress isn't making me believe that any of them is capable in handling psychology talk about the criminal. It's the word that and how unnatural they achieve the conclusion. Still not a fan of the colour palette, you can be dark and black but it has to have a real purpose and not all the time. The interrogation room is so dark.
It's not that I am nitpicky but I can't see anything or half of the screen many times.
I hope it gets better and the show has better pace and more conversation between the member.

You put into words why I'm quite enjoying The King Loves. Unlike the other new shows, I came to it without much expectation, so I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the dynamics between the lead trio. Also, the bodyguards that come out of nowhere are my new favorite thing.

Seven Day Queen and Forest of Secrets ruin me emotionally and mentally each week so there's something nice about being able to come to a show that lets the brightness outweigh the darkness (for now). That kind of translates to it not being as emotionally involving as it should be (maybe because the performances are just good, not great), but it has me invested and entertained enough.

So I'm a bit anxious about Falsify now because after I've seen the first four episodes (and liked it!), I started binging Forest of Secrets and HOLY MOLY COW WHAT IS THIS SORCERY HOW CAN A DRAMA BE LIKE THIS

So now I'm scared to go back to Falsify this coming week because FoS might have spoiled me and now I might not find Falsify as good??? Hope that doesn't happen.

Yes to all the New Journey to the West love! ? I only see my sister during weekends and we've been watching it every weekend so I even have fonder feelings for this variety show.

Which means that with me binging Forest of Secrets and NJTTW, my Father is Strange marathon has suffered a bit. I need to binge ASAP so I can catch up with the weekly episodes!

Forest of secret--this is a complete movie experience that we are lucky to have twice a week. I am so surprised this is the writers first work! Amazing.

Super behind on my shows, especially Duel. ;-;

But I’m caught up on Forest of Secrets and Seven Day Queen. Both of these dramas are standouts compared to the rest of my watch list. They’re really a step above everything else.

I’ve only seen the first episode of CriminalMinds, but I wasn’t wowed by it. Very much a straight-up crime procedural show similar to the US shows. I do like US shows too (less so now due to multiseasons, etc.), but I wanted to connect more with the characters in the Korean remake. Maybe it is lacking some depth and moved too fast for the first episode.
