Happy OT!!! Okay, maybe not that happy ? no more Forest of Secrets boooohooo...no more Yeo Jin, no more Shi Mok! Aigooo...

I wonder why can’t more dramas be like FOS? Even if not everyone is as talented as the team FOS, shouldn’t there at least be some form of quality control in all aspects of making a drama?

If we viewers can spot logic deficiencies in plot, bad script and poor editing, why can’t producers employ a person who can give critical advice to these areas before they roll out the drama to us?

We’d think that big budget and pre-production/more time to film would have solved the problems but the record isn’t all that good. It upsets me because I feel that in giving us dramas of such quality, they have taken the viewers for fools or for granted. I won’t be appeased by fanservice, I just want good if not decent quality dramas.

On another note, why is my fanwall limited to 200 words when I see others writing a thesis on theirs? No, I don't need to write a thesis, I just need a teeny weeny bit more. Maybe 250?

I've the same question with your last paragraph as well! How to unlock the characters limit? Sometimes I just need to write longer, but not to the point that I'll do an essay. Can someone help us with this?

Type up what you want to say and then right click and paste it in the text box! (No Ctrl +V, that doesn't work anymore)

I try not to write overly lengthy posts though, I just use it to stretch the word count a little. Saving my drama theses for the comments section ?

I think it really comes down to business strategy. When millions od people watch a drama full of inconsistencies, then it is likely to be replicated. Why fix it if it ain't broke. Look at Goblin and DotS. You think the writer will change her writing style? Of course not.

But there are also people willing to watch dramas like Forest of Secrets. So, the network will try to produce this type of dramas as long as more people are willing to watch and pay for it. So, I'm glad so many of the beanies have shared the love for this.

Cheers to many more!

" Look at Goblin and DotS. You think the writer will change her writing style? Of course not."

I didn't finish Goblin or DotS but it's more of the style which I dislike or have no interest. I am referring more to those which flaws are more fundamental and not so subjective.

Anyway, I'll join in the chorus for more dramas like FOS!

I kind of like the word count nazi on the fan walls, because it makes me express myself concisely (which is not my strong suit) and then when I browse the beanie fan pages, I appreciate not having to read a novel and just getting snippets of what people are loving at the moment.

At first I thought it would be because live-shooting drama, so due to time constraint they don't have time to give their best efforts on the drama. But it's not that case because even pre-produced drama have the same problem. That could be the reason why some producers move to cable, as I believe cable give them more space and freedom to their work. Another reason, just like some drama viewers who are not that care about the quality of the drama, they might have the same kind of thought too. I think that's why they don't really care to spend their budget to employ an expert for giving advices for eg. Just like you said, they might have taken the viewers for granted.

I'm personally, not very picky as a viewer, as I don't really watch a drama because of quality per se. As long as the main story itself can attract me, I'll watch. Regardless how well made any drama, if I found the story is not my cup of tea and not worth of my time, I won't watch.

Anyway, I agree we need more well made drama like FOS because despite of not really picky on a quality, I really appreciate for more well made drama like FOS because it means the productions are giving their best efforts to serve us with their production. FOS probably is a special case, because having a writer who have expriences as a director might help her to write better as she has two different views; one from writer's view, and another one from director's view and she might also have a say in the directing.

We did learn from dramas like Moon Lovers that pre-produced doesn't guarantee quality production. It's dramas like these which I think have taken their viewers for granted because they had the budget and time to deliver but the outcome is so far from expectation.

There was a time where we can be more assured about consistent quality in cable dramas but it's sadly not true anymore.

I don't start a drama looking for quality as in scrutinizing the editing, plot or directing. I just go for entertainment. I also consider myself not picky. There were a lot of imperfect kdramas which I enjoyed and accepted with their warts and all. However, there is only that much I can accept with logic fails, poor directing and editing. Then I get all rankled.

FOS is special alright but is it too much to ask for something that's just a fraction of its awesomeness?

6
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

Sigh. Maybe it's too much, because the best thing won't come frequently/regularly? It needs very good writer, PD, director, ost, and the most important thing is caliber actors/actresses, what else?

3
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

My ranking:
Writer
PD/director
editor
actor
ost
I place acting below because 90% of the time, dramas are let down by other than acting. Usually if the acting isn't good then the writing and production aren't as well.

Rarely do we get every single aspect awesome as happened in FOS. It's like those rare phenomenon where stars and planets aligned.

6

Yet I read yesterday that Moon Lovers is getting a 2nd season...Hope FOS will, but won't hold my breath.

'I wonder why can’t more dramas be like FOS?'-- haha ask the writers! I am all for the critically acclaimed kdramas, except they are so few in numbers. I mean we can literally handpick the dramas which were some of the best. Like white christmas, or nine or liar game or a secret forest.

Happy Friday, everyone!!

I currently watching Coffee Prince to soothe my nerves after the ending of CDrama Prince Agents, which left me so unbelievably pissed. It's not the ending that has me livid so much as the 60+ hours of my life sacrificed to abysmal storytelling, production, and editing. I kept ignoring the glaring flaws instead of tuning out, hoping it would get better.

Anyway, I'd heard so many good things about Coffee Prince, I decided to give it a try, and it's been the perfect palate cleanser. How could it not be, with Hong Yoo's beautiful self onscreen most scenes :).

You thought it was that bad, huh? I don't know. As we neared the end, you could kind of tell where everything was leading, so I didn't mind it so much. I was a complete addict for much of the series, so I appreciate that it entertained me for so long. Maybe people were frustrated because it had so much potential? Maybe there wasn't enough romance or character development for some? Or maybe viewers haven't grown accustomed to having their souls crushed at the end of a Chinese historical drama? The heroine was great and the potential suitors were likable. I enjoyed what the show was trying to do thematically. The execution could have been better, but at least the heroine remained an awesome, gravity-defying warrior throughout (ha ha).

I've come to think of C-Dramas much in the same way I do sageuks, to be enjoyed once in a blue moon. I haven't seen this one yet, but by your complaints I'm guessing it runs along the same general C-Drama line.

What really sucks about C-Dramas is that they tend to start off promising and then go to shit. Much of the middle to end is fattened up with flashbacks and frustrating bits which pretty much just results in fast forwarding to save my sanity. Two good recent examples of this were Rush to the Dead Summer and Across the Ocean to See You. The only C-Drama that I've loved start to finish is Love O2O a.k.a. Just One Smile is Very Alluring. These are have modern day storylines as apposed to your historical one here, but the premise is the same.

On to better stuff, Coffee Prince is a seminal work that really deserves much of the praise it gets. It's not perfect, but its damn good. I hope you enjoy it.

Required fields are marked *

I wish there was a rule that required dramas to tell a story concisely. I realize producers are trying to make money by milking a popular show to death, but flashbacks are essentially repeats. They are an incredibly lazy and infuriating way to pad a show. If you can tell a story in 12 episodes, tell the story in 12 episodes.

The creators' tendency to completely sabotage the main characters by the end is another reason Chinese dramas end so badly. Rush to the Dead Summer is a modern example of how to completely destroy characters for no particular reason. I prefer the period version, in which the series has a bit of a Game of Thrones ethic, and the downfall of the main characters has an epic savageness that the circumstances seem to justify. Still, some endings are downright harsh. There's nothing like watching the romantic lead you liked become a tyrant who steams people to death.

Hello beanies ?

Since young, I always love to read, especially adventure series. I grew up with Famous Five, Mallory Towers, Nancy Drew and many more. And now that I have two young girls of my own, I do my best to inculcate my love of reading in them. But of course since I rediscover my love of k-drama, my reading somewhat has been affected (does reading recaps count? ?). Recently I had an interesting convo with one of my girls.

Daughter: Mommy, you are a bookworm!

Me: ? *pleased as punch at the compliment*

Daughter: You are also a showworm!

Me: Huh? Come again, showworm?

Daughter: Yes, because you read and know a lot about shows, and watch a lot of shows, so ta-da, you are a showworm!

Me: ???

So to all DB's showworms, have a great Friday and enjoy your OT!

We're going on a Bear Hunt;

Acted out the thought provoking classic
Brown bear brown bear, what can you see?

And finished off with the ground breaking narrative

I grew up with those books in elementary school 45 years ago!
And this summer i was able to get the following from the big marketplace in the sky - big A - for my summer - a total of about 45+ books!
- Naughtiest girl in school series
- Mallory Towers - series
- St. Clare's -series
- Famous Five - series

Hoping to get the Five Findouters, Secret Seven Series later in the year after i have read the above.

finished 2 naughtiest girls book and had a good laugh - those were nice books to grow by/with!

Watching k-dramas every day of the week (and weekend is 2 or 3!) is slowing me down some on the reading front.

Happy Friday Beanies!

Can't believe it's already Friday again. This week has been quite a busy week for me. I had two interviews this week which is why I didn't log in to DB for few days because I had to travel to another state. I'm so left behind with kdrama schedule. I've only watched Seven Day Queen and School 2017 episodes for this week. I've so many dramas to catch up: BotWG, Reunited Worlds, TKL, and Criminal Minds. I also haven't started with Falsify and not to forget, this weekend is the premiere episode for Strongest Deliveryman and Rescue Me! I'm so excited for both dramas!

So many dramas, so little time to watch. I've another two interviews coming up next week. Sigh, welcome to the life of fresh graduate who is seeking for her first job.

I agree! Sometimes the characters did something I hated, but even then I completely understood their reasoning and bought that there was no better way. It was heartbreaking, but beautifully so. I didn't find myself getting frustrated at the writing or the plot- which is rare- what frustrated me was the hopeless situations they were in.
The ending. Oh the ending. It wasn't what I would have liked, but it's exactly what it should be. We knew what we were getting into from the beginning so the ending was the most fitting result of everything that happened. Even though it broke my heart, it did it so well that I still love it.

Omg I completely agree with you. I usually get annoyed at characters when they do stupid things and I did feel frustrated. but then I'll think about it and realise "actually I understand why they did that". The only thing I got really annoyed about is when she said "My family and I, we serve only one King". I think that was a bit too harsh.

The ending, yes I liked that they stuck to history and just worked around it and did the best they could. A happy ending would not be satisfying because it was set up to be a tragic love story from the start.

Lol yes, that scene frustrated me. I totally get that she thought that was the only way to save Yeok, but I still think her claiming she was being set up would've been a better move. Granted, she didn't know that Yeok could control the Snail Brides or get witnesses so it's understandable, but that line about only one king left me like "damn girl, you take 'go big or go home' to heart"

Hi everyone! This is my first time to participate in the OT :)

I've been watching School 2017 and I'm appalled by the education system in South Korea. I know that some of the aspects of the drama is not realistic but I think there really is great pressure among Korean students in general. Not only that, there is also pressure when it comes to physical appearances and maybe financial or social status?
Now I understand why I hear that there is a high suicide rate in the country.

I also live in an Asian country, and in many ways, our society is also similar to that of South Korea. Having good grades and a degree will secure one's future. I think we really need to do something to change the system or belief, not just the education system.

Welcome to OT! ^^ Yes, a lot of the plot points are exaggerated, but there's some truth in how social status gives you an edge. Korean society is supposed to be meritocratic, but Korean youths themselves have nicknamed it "Hell Joseon" for the way that class continues to stratify the population and the opportunities you get based on what class you're born into ("golden spoons" being at the top of the pecking order), just like it was in the Joseon era.

Yes, I also noticed that in Fight My Way! Apparently, social status or class still matter a lot probably not just in Asian countries, but also in other parts of the world. It's really unfair but *sigh* it would really be difficult to remove the stigma and judgement of society.

The education system is one of the few things that most dramas actually are pretty close on. There is obviously some exaggeration as all dramas do. But there has to be some good reasons why over 50% of South Koreans in the 18-25 age group say they want to leave the country.

Happy Friday Beanies! I've put Reunited Worlds on hold for the time being, so I'm only watching School 2017 and checking out Strongest Deliveryman this weekend with my mum and my drama-buddy soft toy bunny, Milk Tea (I only let him watch the good ones, he's spoiled ?).

Page Turner: I'm slooowly finishing up this, because I only watch it on long train rides to yoga class which is once a week. I love watching Yoo-seul try to stay angry at Cha-sik and preserve her cool image but fail. I'm checking out Legendary Shuttle next for Seo Ji-hoon! Can't wait to see him more as Kyungwoo.

Not much else to say for my current dramas, but I have two song recommendations: "Sorry" by The Rose and "Coffee Ending" by Tarin, who used to be a vocalist with Vanilla Acoustic. I discovered this song through her OST for School 2017, "Going Home", which is also lovely.

I am still waiting him to be the first lead in other drama soon.

I'm still trying to recover from last night's sobfest over the last episode of Seven Day Queen. I really don't quite know how to move past it, but for right now at least I'm content not to...not yet. I've never felt so much pain and so much joy from a show so consistently throughout its run. I know the likelihood of the show winning awards is probably slim, but I wish that somehow the incredible cast and crew would receive some sort of recognition for creating what I think it possibly one of the best historical kdramas of all time.
On a lighter note, I have been so pleasantly surprised to find myself really enjoying School 2017 every week. It's not the deepest drama in the world, but the storyline is consistently interesting, the characters are becoming more complex as we know more about them, and the various relationships are cute and have solid chemistry. I love the main couple, but I have to admit to fangirling over their adorable young teacher and his constant attempts to make his students' world a better place. And Kim Jung Hyun...wow...I loved him as the brother in Jealousy Incarnate, but here he's giving off rebel/James Dean vibes that are sending this noona fan into orbit on an average of twice an episode. He's just...so...swoony.
I'm celebrating my birthday this month...I think I'll ask my family to find me a kdrama hero as a present. ;)

All the actors in SDQ deserves an award, especially the main leads! Their acting is so brilliant that I actually forgot that they're actors, and not Yeonsangun, Yeok or Chae Gyung. I'm disappointed that this drama doesn't receive the love that it deserves. I know that ratings don't really reflect the quality of the drama, but I'm mad that the chance for them to win an award is quite slim because of the ratings. It's indeed the best saeguk drama that I've ever watched.

Open Thread week 26! I sincerely hope everyone is having a good day today. It’s been quite a week here in our neck of the woods. Without going into too much detail, my family is doing well, but our community was rocked by tragedy, and it’s probably as bad as you’re thinking. But life goes on, and it just goes to show that reality is stranger than fiction sometimes. It’s a good thing I was distracted by loving family and friends for my 30th! (I mean) 40th! Birthday Week! (Yes, I celebrate a week of my birthday—when you get this old, there’s not many more to celebrate, so you do it with a bang! Actually, my present isn’t coming until September, so maybe I’m celebrating two full months of my birthday!) So, I was told to update you on if Gong Yoo appeared after I blew out my candles. Well, if you count watching the 6th episode of Goblin during my party, then, yes, Yes he did! I can’t think of a better way of celebrating, can you? And if you want to know more about the food and friends that were there, it’s all in the blog, which is on my fan page.

So my mother came into town this week and I got to watch The King Loves with her. She’s hilarious. She hooked. So much so that she doesn’t even care to watch them without subtitles. I think Viki was subbed 40% the night episode 6 came out and she had to watch it—which is fine by me since I have DB to translate! And it gives us an excuse to watch it again when the subs do come out! And this was our sweet conversation:

Mom: That oldest brother is really good. He’s a great actor.

Me: *OMG, my mom is crushing over a guy younger than me.* I think he’s older than the rest of the main group and been in several dramas. He is good.

Mom: I can’t believe you’re 40. I remember being 40.

Me: *Just because I mentioned Oh Min Seok being older, I’m going to go down memory lane with my mother. Bring it on. I guess that’s what you get when not all the subs are out.* I know, we’re all old now. These young actors are 20 years younger than me. That’s depressing.

Mom: 20 years! I’m 40 years older than all of them! Enjoy your 40’s, honey, they’re the best years of your life.

Me: *Silence, as I start processing life, death, and the prospects of aging well.*

Mom: What’s going on? Why aren’t you translating this for me?
*Because I usually still translate what is going on for her even with English subs as English is her second language.*

Me: Because I can’t understand Korean! And the English subtitles just stopped! Did you think I suddenly learned Korean in the past 2 months?

Mom: *Laughing* Oh, I forgot. You were doing such a good job translating this for me.

(Later that night)

Hubby: You just spent a lot of time with your mom.

Me: My mom loves that drama, but I have to translate everything since she can’t read English as fast as the subtitles come up.

Hubby: That’s why you put the subtitles in Vietnamese. *Proceeds to show me that Viki has...

Me: *Laughing, mind blown!* Oh, I forgot!

Hubby: That apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, does it?

Me: *Hysterically laughing now.* I’m going senile in my 40’s!

Hubby: *In total deadpan* Please don’t say that. I still have to live with you. Or, maybe just put you in a home and go find Yoona.

Moral of the Story: Sharing K-dramas is priceless.

2nd moral: If I suddenly stop writing here, it’s probably because I’ve lost my marbles, and in a nursing home, and you'll suddenly hear that Yoona just married a dashing doctor from the US.

3rd moral: Isn’t my mom sweet???

Is anyone watching the currently airing daily drama 'Lovers in Bloom' with Do Ji Han? It's my first daily and is surprisingly quite good. I do watch it with the help of the fast forward button - but the central romances have me hooked:
1. Rich girl - poor guy
2. Single mom and young man with a bright future whom she doesn't want to burden with her 'baggage'.

I'm well and truly impressed with the depth being built into the characters. Any thoughts, anyone?

Thanks for sharing! I've been thinking of picking it up when my semester gets busier. Do Ji-han being one of the leads is a huge plus point, and I'm also liking the premise of a single mother because female characters who are single mothers, married, divorced, or widowed rarely take centre stage in dramas.

Yes. The premise of the single mum is what attracted me to it as well. It's not quite up to par with the prime time shows - but it's no bad. I was expecting more makjang, but I got a regular drama where conflicts and misunderstandings aren't drawn out too long (though perhaps the fast forward button helps with that?) and plenty of things keep happening.

@seralovestteobokki - I am watching it with the fast forward button, but it's raising interesting questions about romantic love beyond your socio-economic class, or for single moms that most K-dramas don't, and is dealing with them in an interesting, true to life, and thoughtful way.
It's quite (emotionally) satisfying to watch, actually.

I'm watching it. I'm hooked on the dailies and always watch them. There is always one daily that is a bit extreme on the human evil and one that is very human with low-key evil. I tend to go with the low-key evil one coz i hate baby switching, evil second leads, blackmailing and the like. Although i suspect Daegap and Dohyeon and maybe even Ms Heo might cause some serious trouble down the line. As will Taejin's sister.

Oo... Low key evil is a nice way to put it! :)

I'm expecting it to get crazy later on as well - I mean, it's been hinted that Do Hyun is involved in the husband's accident in some way. And the four families are ridiculously intertwined - now that would never happen in real life.
But so far it's been pretty great. ^^

Do you have any recommendations for dailies?

Initially I watched it because ImSooHyang. But now I get addicted in DoJiHan and MooSooHyuk. JinDoHyun quite cute too. The truth is because the boys are so beautiful and it's good for my eyes LOL.
The plot is simple and a bit makjang imo but it's okay because there is no very wicked/mean character or oh-so-naive giant hearted character which it makes me less grumpy.

It's the little things that get me too. I know that cheabols don't really marry poor girls, and real men are not as perfect as drama men, but there are a lot of little things that go on in the background of dramas that make me wonder if they really do that in Korea. Things like:

Walking in and out of shoes without missing a step every time you go through a doorway. I am in awe every time I see it. Here, there are a few people who like you to take your shoes off in their homes, but it's the exception, not the norm, and taking shoes on and off is a bit of a production. (There was one time when I was visiting my grandma, and some of her neighbors came over to visit. They asked if they should take off their shoes. My grandma was a bit startled as wearing shoes in the house was not something she was concerned with, but said, "Sure, you can take off your shoes. Be comfortable.")

Bags. The drama heroines who have closets full of designer bags are completely foreign to me. Here, a purse is a utility, not a fashion accessory. You buy one you like, fill it up with all of the things you could ever possibly need, and then carry it with you always until it dies. Switching purses is a pain in the butt, and I am amazed at the drama women who do it often enough to justify owning multiples.

Sleeping fully dressed. Including jewelry and ties. I would suspect shoes as well, if not for the whole walking out of your shoes thing. I'm pretty sure this is just a drama thing and not a real life thing (see also: sleeping with the lights on), but it happens often enough and without comment, that I wonder sometimes.

Showering at night instead of in the morning. This one I am pretty sure is real. And it makes sense. It's just that the opposite was so ingrained in me that I find it very odd.

I have about 15 purses at any given time. I switch my everyday purse with the seasons and have more than a few fashion purses for going out. I live in southern Cali. Everyone one I know has a bunch of purses, designer even.

I always wonder about the sleeping thing too. Like why are they dressed as if they're going to the store at any second. Unless of course they're married in which case they have matching pjs. The lights, like how in the world can you sleep with all those lights on? I wish there was a way to really find out if these habits are what Koreans actually do.

Hilarious post. The magic of shoes on as you run out the door after someone is indeed something I've wondered about for all my kdrama years. And why does almost everyone sleep with the lights on? And in terms of the bags, why they're always displayed in said closets as if it's a boutique. I do have a lot of bags and they're shelved like books, piled in tubs, hanging from hooks. Because of course I never change my bag ?

I noticed that too in Oh Hae Young Again. I still don't know if she spent the night of not. I assumed she did. What did you see it in? I think it has to do with the Korean hyper-hygiene. Taking care of yourself and almost being too high-maintenance. Although, why would you show that in a drama? I sometimes brush my teeth after a lunch meal, but I'm not announcing it to all my colleagues and friends and they're certainly not participating with me! Maybe JB AND GF will do a book on why do dramas do that? Part deux and address our inquiries.

Having fun with varieties this week. Following SuJu varieties.
I decided my favourite is SungMin. Since I'll probably be the only fan he has that could not give a lesser f#$& that he's married, I consider myself a bada$$ :P

Anyway, this week my mom told me "Wow, some of the songs that we sing in the car while travelling have some "words" in the lyrics" and I was like "yup, but it's not like we have to analyze that". And she shuddered at the thought.

Because you see. One thing that I've learned in my life is that if you think too much about something, you will always find something wrong with it. Like the people who stare so much at the mirror that they hate their faces.
And I'm not like that.

I started dramas to find more stuff to pass the time. Since about 70% of American tv was about killers and terrorism, I thought to try a new genre.
However since this is a pass-time for me. This is just something to pass the time.
I don't wan't to know what the actor, director , writer or whatever is in real life. I open my pc or phone, watch the drama or movie. If the movie works for me I search for similar ones, if it doesn't I don't.

Once when reading a book, I made the mistake of opening the reviews on Goodreads and some were like "This author has said in an interview that since she created the original perfect man in the book , she dumped her husband. So I won't read her book". And so I imagined why what the author does has any impact on me as a reader, and my only mental image was me reading a book and the author (she is a grandma by the way) being next to me and commenting about her sex scenes. Ewww.

Lesson learned. I do know perfectly well the line between reality and fiction :D

Omg SJ variety/reality shows way back are gold! I enjoyed Full House and Exploring the Human Body so much. If I were to watch EHB again now, I'm sure I will still laugh so hard. They need to do a Season 2 of EHB.

Happy Friday all!

Busy this week but popping in to say:

I'm angry at whoever is editing Criminal Minds because i think it's criminal how they've ruined the hard work of the actors by making the show actually difficult, frustrating and painful to watch. URGH. how can you screw up with Lee Junki, Moon Chae Won and Son Hyun Joo??? *boggles my mind* ?
The acting is great but I can't get absorbed into the world because the scenes are so CHOPPY. and the villain doesn't feel scary enough. Please will someone ask them to look for the Voice PD?? Please? I've watched episode 3 and planning to watch 4 but if 4 doesn't get better then.... I may have to look elsewhere for my Lee Junki fix. ? /rantover

I also want to say- please be careful on the road- there was a horrible car accident in front of me just yesterday: the car flipped, and the driver may have spinal injuries ? Thank goodness the passenger was ok. Went down to render assistance but luckily didn't need to do much, the ambulance came quite fast. Drive safe everyone!!!

Finally, Any recommendations for good videos/sites to practice listening to Korean? Preferably with Hangul subtitles- so I can pause and learn. I'm trying hard to improve my korean asap before my trip!

Thanks in advance and have a good weekend all! ?

Criminal Minds Korea is fast-tracking season-long arcs from the mother show in a span of two episodes. And yes, the editing is a travesty and I hope they fix it before they reach the halfway mark.

For places to practice Korean with Hangul subtitles, are you able to navigate and type in Korean? Here is a website that has a database of Hangul subtitles of movies and TV shows. You might have to use GOM Player for the subs to show up. They don't work too well with other media players like VLC. I think you have to be a member to use the search function, it didn't used to be this way though. It seems to be mostly American media like "Game of Thrones" and "Breaking Bad" but there is Korean stuff in there as well like "Secret Forest" subbed in Korean. There are movies as well. Since search isn't an option, you could just type in Google the name you're looking for and add "한글자막." A Korean website will probably show up.

http://cineaste.co.kr/bbs/board.php?bo_table=psd_dramacap

If you're open to watching Korean movies from the 1930's to the early 2000's, you can try the Korean Film Archive channel on YouTube. Most of their movie selections are subbed in both English and Korean. I'm not sure if it's region locked or not. There's some good movies in there that I've watched.

https://www.youtube.com/user/KoreanFilm/featured

English and Korean don't come up at the same time so I'm not sure how helpful it will be to you. But here is a place to find Korean subtitles.

I forgot, GOM Player does allow you to play two subtitle files at once so you can have the Korean and English subtitles playing at the same time if you wanted to. It might help for what you're looking for.

I'm not sure what exactly you are searching for, but you may try talktomeinkorean website, they have a lot of stuff, videos or lessons included. They also sell books, I think their Survival Korean could be a good book for your travels... they have also e-version... and there usually are audio files for download on their site for listening/pronunciation exercises... (though don't remember how it is with that book). Their Korean audio lessons are definitely fun to listen to... it's not just a dry grammar, but they also talk about origins of the words and give some cultural insight...

Hi all:
The dramas this season have been so good. Some were meh, though. Right now...trying to get up enough courage to watch the finale of 7-Day queen. Maybe it' age but i wonder how those ahjummas in Korea can manage the stress some of these dramas bring. I know storytelling/story-listening is supposed to be healing, and a good cry is always a powerful thing but dang..i have been avoiding a lot of stuff lately because i can't deal with the grief, evil, stress, stupid secrets, lies, noble idiocy, etc.

Loved Forest of Secrets. What a great writer! What a great director! What great actors! And yes, i do have a soft spot in my heart for weaselly Prosecutor Seo.
Currently watching:
Lovers in Bloom on KBS World TV on youtube. A daily which started slow but which is getting more stressful as the days go by. Am addicted, i can't stop watching.
Father is Strange: To show you how fearful of stress i am, i was so worried the writers are gonna try to make miscarried mom bring up one of the twins (when they're born) that i almost dropped the show (after i had restarted it a month ago.)
Eternal Love: Chinese Drama -- I am so hooked on this drama. Has there ever been a royal family that is so ruthless to each other? I'm not a lover of C-dramas so i can't generalize but i do love the way the secrets aren't kept forever.
Speaking of secrets. King In Love was frustrating the heck out of me. Such stupid leads keeping secrets from each other when life is falling apart all around them. I almost gave up watching it. But i love the nobility of the friendship between the king and his best bud. And i have never liked the actor who played best bud. He always felt a bit cold to me. But am loving him in this part.
I think that's it. Awaiting the new dramas. Happy weekend, all.

SEVEN DAY QUEEN!!! The best romance saeguk ever...
THAT, that is how you tell a love story...

Which actually reminds me about how contrasting it is to another romance saeguk recently where the king was ready to throw the whole kingdom for a girl who... barely did anything in the show.

Catching up on dramas after a lot of traveling - watched Circle and found the premise interesting but the execution frustrating - the directing felt sloppy and the dropped plot points and script inconsistencies drove me nuts. Just started Forest of Secrets and so far it's lovely - it's taking an overused premise and executing it in a way that feels fresh, smart and emotionally grounded. The characters actually seem like real, complicated people - looking forward to how this one plays out.

Good morning!

Rules Master Of The Mask I know a lot of beanies seemed to not care too much for this one but I actually really enjoyed it. The first about 6 episodes were a bit eh to me but as things started heating up I enjoyed it more and more. I am always amazed how incredibly expressive Yoo Seung-Ho can be with his eyes.

Warrior Baek Dong Soo I am in a historical drama mood right now which doesn't happen often so I need to watch as many historicals as I can while it lasts. I have started and stopped this one many times. Watched the first episode about 3 times until I really decided to just watch it. I'm half through the drama and it's good, but I have yet to be pulled in. It's lacking that something special for me. Loving the bromance between Ji Chang-Wook and Yoo Seung-Ho. I wish the whole drama was just about their bromance and not the actual romance. The actress, Shin Hyun-Bin, who plays the main heroine is absolutely awful. She does not know how to emote. There was a scene where she was crying and I didn't realize she was because her face never changed.

I'm very behind on Woman of Dignity and I've mulled over trying a few shows, but I haven't really watched any kdrama this week. Has anyone watched Breathless? It's a 2003 Lee Kyung-hee drama directed by Park Sung-soo (immediately off the success of his masterpiece Ruler of Your Own World <3), and starring Kim Kang-woo and Chae Jung-ahn. It seems to be about an interclass romance. idk, I've never heard much about it, so I was curious how good it was.

Other than that, I've spent most of my free time nostalgia tripping over Mad Men, which turned ten last month. It's a show that is very near and dear to my heart, one that I associate with a very particular point in my life, and still miss when spring/summer rolls around. I started by watching clips and rereading TLo's Mad Style recaps, and soon that turned into a full-blown re-watch. Now I'm midway through Season 2 and it's 1962. It's so crazy, watching these characters in their early 60's incarnations again, because it really hits home, how much they've changed by the end. Joan and Peggy are still my favorites, but I've been enjoying characters I despised before, too, such as Betty and Pete.

I can't keep up with dramas anymore. I used to have the time to watch old ones and keep up with the new ones. I don't know why I can't do it anymore. Perhaps I'm just getting tired of them. Or perhaps they just aren't very compelling to watch? It seems to me a lot of recent dramas are directed at the teenage demographic with actors who look way too young, and maybe it's just too immature for me. What do you think?

I've had that same feeling at different times. I've gone through dry spells where I didn't watch any dramas (old or new) for over seven/eight months. But then one or two caught my interest and before I knew it I was fully pulled back in. I also agree with you that at times it does feel more dramas are geared for teenage/idol fan demographics. Then dramas like Forest of Secrets or Seven Day Queen come along and I know there is still excellence out there in Kdrama land.

I'm in a multi-year slump or as I like to think of it a leveling out. When I first started back in 2009 I marathoned and binge watched so many dramas. Then I live watched 4 things at the same thing time (during the Best Love era) and I got burned out. I've watched dramas off and on for the next few years but it didn't really take. In the last few months I've made a more conscious effort to watch dramas, but not at the pace I used to. Now I try to have a more balanced approach, and have no problem giving up on something if it doesn't grab me. I guess I have become more selective.

I also have a stack of books to read and online classes to finish but i cant really concentrate due to the meds and back pain. They said up to 4 weeks before im mended. Sigh. Im just glad it wasnt a more serious fall. I also laugh every time i tell the story and when i went in to the dr he was giving me the side eye till he saw the back bruises and xray. I thought i pulled a muscle or tore a ligament maybe a cracked rib nope 2 broken bones. I guess this is a sign to rest [even more so] and watch some korean and japanese dramas.

Hi Beanies !

Last night two or more men attacked a supermarket in my neighborhood and presumingly held a few employees in hostage. That's the 3rd time it happened in a month (where I live) when it practically doesn't happen.
The fact that it happened so close to my house is a shock. The time I thought nothing dangerous could happen and living quietly is quickly ending. I extremely worry for my parents since they're going to stay there all their life while I'm planning to move out.
This week I looked for an accommodation in time for my stay in Germany. It's my first time moving out... well living in another country to be exact. I want to live in different places in my life but finding a place is more stressful than I thought. First times are always tough but that's how we learn, don't we ? Luckily dramas are here to help me escape from reality.

Father is Strange : I liked Chul Soo's introduction to the family that was the light and funny part I needed. Hye Young is going to persuade her father not to turn himself in or if it's not possible, a light sentence will be the result. I mean Unnie is always there to save the day !

Woman of Dignity : I've never enjoyed watching people fighting in a drama before WoD ! I was cheering the Ahjumma when she beat up the mistress. That was so refreshing ! I love what Ah Jin's gallery art friend told her why she doesn't want someone to touch her paintings when she touched her husband's friend. Buuurn !
The transition between the maids gossiping to the “seven princesses” reunion was well done. They're not different from other
I feel bad for Chairman Ahn ! He can't count neither on his children or Bok Ja so he has only Ah Jin like at the beginning. I guess even divorced Ah Jin will still have that relation with him. Bok Ja is going down because of her friends as they feel betrayed and threatened. One of them or both will kill her I think or the sister-in-law is behind it.

Happy Friday :D

2017 is the Year of Cute for me. There have been so many just sweet and easy dramas this year and I love it! I just finished Fight My Way and walked away with so many warm fuzzies. Weightlifting Fairy, Strong Woman, and Suspicious Partner also just sent my heart fluttering. What's cool about this current trend of cute dramas is that the lead female character is so well-rounded. All of the women were strong and outspoken. Their main males respected them and knew their place when these women had work to do. It's been so refreshing to see relationships portrayed in such simple and realistic ways.

So while waiting for new eps of "Bride of Habaek", I decided to start watching "weightlifting Fairy...". I had tried watching this drama before, and couldn't get past the first ep, but I thought this time I would give it at least two eps. By the end of ep 2, I was completely engaged by the show! So I wanted to share my thoughts about the drama.

Overall I am really liking this drama despite some ridiculous elements, it is cute, funny, and has heart (makes me feel like unicorns and puppies), and is exceeding my expectations. I think this drama is on its way to becoming my favorite romantic youth/coming-of-age drama despite the flaws.

While I think that LSK’s casting for the role is ridiculous (IMO) because she doesn’t match the character physically, she is skinny and has no muscle tone. She also is not plain. If they wanted her to feel undesirable, she could’ve been training to become a pastry chef and be frumpy, slow witted (as she is here), and a bit on the chubby side. However since weightlifting is just used as a backdrop (and I’m thankful for that, since it doesn’t interest me), I could suspend my disbelief. I also give LSK props for throwing herself at the role and doing well (acting-wise), and she really came off as a cute pumpkin, a very frumpy bumpkin.

NJH’s character here is completely different from his Habaek role. Habaek is NJH’s first foray into grownup characters, and is pure sexiness - even when he is being awkward. I also really like his looks (styling) and slightly buffer body as Habaek. As Joon Hyung he was goofy but also dreamy, as the sweet college boy who liked Bok Joo as she was, frumpy, slow wits, and all. He is very playful, but also mature and dependable when he needs to be. As for chemistry, I find his chemistry with SSK more sizzling, whereas his chemistry with Bok Joo playful and sweet but no sizzle.

When I finish this drama, I will come back to add my final thoughts... I guess :)

I have finished it now! And my final thoughts on this drama are:

The writing, when it came to character moments/funny moments/moving moments was excellent - with the exception of the weightlifting subplot which was unbelievable. The characters were well drawn out, and I liked all of them! The OST is beautiful and evokes a deeply nostalgic feeling in me for some reason.

In conclusion, this drama had a very simple premise, and it could've easily devolved into boring territory or stale/dry territory. However, the execution of this drama was very well done, and it had a very warm and sincere atmosphere. I wish that all dramas with a main slice-of-life element, would have an execution similar to this drama.

Overall I really liked this drama, it was good and heartfelt despite some ridiculous elements.

I had a crazy week since last weekend. I wanted to write a lot in Secret Forest recap but was too busy so couldn't write down any of it. So I am writing here instead and those who have not watched the finale or the series, please skip the comment if you don't want to spoilers.....

I felt episode 15 and 16 did a remarkable job in doing the overall show justice. A part of me wanted poetic justice but what they instead gave us felt more fitting. This was never a show about who did what. I think the writer did very well to make us more connected to the characters than the overall murder mystery. More than the crime, what led to the characters to make those choices was at the heart of the show. This show was about how twisted our sense of justice has become. The world is more grey which is harder to deal with. With monochrome you could go for one or the other but how do you react when the two colors are so incredibly lost in each other. Where do you draw the line?
I felt bad for Yoon and Chang Joon but I felt more angry at Chang Joon later. His righteous self and his love for his wife drove him to the edge of his limit. The weight of his choices made him become a sort of vigilante. But what right did he have to drag Yoon in the middle of it all? I know Yoon was an adult but by the end of the show, I felt he wasn't a lost cause. If what Yeo Jin told him at the end, that many more people lost their children in much more horrific incidents but they don't all kill and one crime doesn't justify another is the truth. He took away a father from son just like his son was taken from him. I also felt incredibly bad for Eun Soo, that girl had her whole life ahead of her. All she wanted was to expose the truth and restore her families honor. A lonely girl full of potential was a collateral damage in a war much bigger than she could've imagined. A lonely, brave girl. I liked that her death gave Shi Mok a reason to reassess his tendency towards those around him and to allow people a chance. The whole finale felt like an epilogue that doesn't end the story. Sure, they made progress but in real world those at the top who move chess pieces rarely pay for their crimes and sins. There is always one loophole or the other that can save them. Yeon Bom not truly paying for his wide range of crimes while Shi Mok being moved to another region is what happens. You can't drive out deep seated corruption in one go, you work constantly until its over. I was happy to see Yeo Jin getting her due along with detective Jang Gun felt amazing. They deserved it by all means. I didn't care for Yeon Jae, I don't think she is any better than her father. What I liked the most that Shi Mok came a long way through it all. He is holding on to the memories of the special prosecutor and his hoobae like a bright spot in his life and that he has a support system now. It was an open end that I can live with.

This! I totally agree that Eun Soo made a great impact on Shi Mok's life. Even though the chance he gave to Dong Jae was abused, I am sure he doesn't regret it.

I can see why the ending is considered an open one but for me, I have all the closures I had asked for and then there were things which cannot be solved or remedied instantly.

Now about the performance, everybody deserves applause for making their character so memorable. Jo Seung Woo and Bae Doona are already proven veterans who didn't let us down. Especially, Bae Doona, any other actress might not have been able to make such a straight forward character like Yeo Jin so much endearing and bad-ass. Yoo Jae Myung as the conflicted, enigmatic Chief Prosecutor, Lee Kyu Hyung as the helpless father who turned into a murderer, Shin Hye Sun as the manipulative, reckless yet naive Eun Soo, Lee Joo Hyuk as the guy who doesn't change till the end.........and everyone else, they brought their A game and made this show what it was. With so many shows that I had to give up due to lackluster acting skills, this show was a breathe of fresh air. The writer was excellent, the production value did justice to their investement, the product placement wasn't too obvious, the cinematography was quite excellent. I wish to see all the actors doing more work and getting their due with each projects.

Greetings Beanies! I hope you all had a good week. Mine has been okay. I survived and that is most important. I am currently listening to the Dramabeans Podcasts and it's reminding me of dramas I've seen, but also ones I always wanted to watch. Once I get my current viewing under control I may start tackling some dramas on my to watch list.

Drama-wise, I started FOREST OF SECRETS which I am really liking. It's very nuanced which I love. I also am watching BRIDE OF THE WATER GOD. It's okay, but I am oddly intrigued. I watch it with indifference, but then something happens or piece of information is given and I become super interested. I also started the 1st episodes of WHISPER and SLY AND SINGLE AGAIN. The latter was okay, but Lee Boyoug is such a badass in Whisper. Remind me never to cross her.

This week I caught up on School 2017 and I don't really know what to think about it. The drama doesn't have the best plot but it's oddly addicting? I don't know how to describe my feelings.

Omg yes @michykdrama

Enid Blyton and Roald Dahl are my.favourite.writers.EVER!!!

I can read the Famous 5 and The Mallory Tower series and the Roald Dahl's short story collections over and over again without ever getting bored. I wonder if kids these days know who these authors are

Haha I think they do! I saw these books in a book store the other day. But then again I'm also not sure if kids are actuallly reading books, or just on the iPad/kindle. Lol.

Broke up with my boyfriend 3 days ago.. and all I want to do is sleep, eat, and watch dramas.. Only I'm in a kdrama rut right now. I tried a chinese drama but then gave up..I don't even know why.. Any way I know it is late in the day for an open thread post but was just wondering about first loves.. I suppose mine might be short at 7 months, but loved him all the same..

Any first love stories out there that any of you wouldn't mind sharing?

Oh no, I'm so sorry! Break-ups suck. So, first love stories...I'm going to share a family member's, because it's a difficult one, but with a happy ending. Her "high school crush" was her first love. It was horribly one sided. She was forever in the "friend zone," studied like crazy to get into a 6-year-professional program after high school and probably wouldn't have had time to properly date him anyway. He was dating another girl in high school who she was friends with too. Typical bad girl dating a good guy. And that was his "first love" too. Anyway, these two get married right out of high school and had two boys before the guy found out she had been lying to him about being a...wait for it...stripper. Yep, I'm not even making this up. So, now he's a 25 year old guy with two kids and a stripper wife. Something he did not sign up for. So, fast forward two more years and he is working for my family member as a pharmacy tech while she's a pharmacist. She's known this crazy the history and is still in love with him. My family PLEADED with her to not get married to him because she'd have two step kids (the same age as my kids) and a crazy ex-wife who is their mother. I'm promise I'm not making any of this up. She married him anyway in a gorgeous wedding which my grandmother refused to attend and now they have the cutest 4 month old son and are terribly in love. So that "first love" didn't work so well for him, but did for her, eventually. This would probably make a great kdrama.

Well, you know, throw in an amnesia trope and a truck of doom, then it would make a great kdrama?. In all seriousness, though, I hope your heart heals quickly, and maybe he'll come back to you. Hugs and virtual chocolate to lesson your heartache ? ? ❤️.

I'm late to the party, but I made it!

It was a happy week, because I discovered that Netflix has season two of Cheo Yong!!!! Ghost detective! Woooooo!

It was a sad week, because I'm down to the last episode and a half, and and then there won't be any more.

Ghost-seeing-detective 4-eva!

Tell me about this! You've not steered me wrong, harmonyfb! I still cannot wait for Legion to return and Dan Stevens to grace my screen.

Oh, it's a GREAT show - it's about a homicide detective who can see ghosts (the eponymous Yoon Cheo-yong). All the other cops call him 'Crazy Ghost' because he keeps to himself but has a huge arrest record - cause he gets help from the victims).

When he transfers to a new station, he meets the ghost of a murdered high school student who is stuck in the precinct. Together, they solve crimes! (Including the ghost's own murder.)

I'm quite certain that somewhere in the fine print of the show's credits is the phrase "Made especially for Harmonyfb".

OMG. I am so jealous getting to watch FOS all sparkly new.

Just stay away from recaps until you have watched the episode. The more you can avoid spoilers (even images) the better it will be.

I see nowhere to leave feedback on Viki's site, but I just have to tell someone--I really like the new learning mode! I still can't read hangul fast enough to catch everything, but I can at least read the shorter sentences, and look for the verbs at the end. It stinks that English and Korean have reversed word order (because by the time you get to the end of the sentence, you've sort of forgotten what you were watching for from the beginning, if you're reading English subs and listening to Korean). But adding in Korean printed text surely helps.

SOMEDAY I will crack this language! 진짜!

I'm watching Father is Strange at episode 44 right now. Is it that big of a crime when the father lied about his identity? I'm confused about why Hyeyong got angry and said she thought she lost her road signs of her life. He did fake his identity, but his character, his 'niceness' and all those good traits of him is not gone, is it? And so far the spoiler clips also showed the kids being angry at him...

I need to rant about king loves but at the same time am so confused and angry that have lost sense of why am emotional in the first place. I shouldn't have started this series, I shd have been patient enough to know the ending but I guess my curiosity is just out of this world. This is about the fact that I just came to the conclusion that rin and san is no endgame in fact San actually might love won. That was the twist hjh was talking about.
