Beanie level: Noble idiot

Just saw this on Insta!! Can’t say I was expecting Kocowa to partner with Viki. If it isn’t too much more per month, I might get it.

So, with this I won’t have to pay for Kocowa separately? They sure don’t have a lot of info on this…

That’s what I would assume. It says more information is coming soon in the post.

That would be great! I hate Kocowa, worst website and app. Terrible costumer service. Viki is much more reliable.

Listening to old DB podcasts again and hearing them talk about the first part of CITT and praising it makes me so sad lol. At one point they say In-ho would be the lead type of character in most other dramas which made me laugh. They had no clue what was coming, even though they did say they were trying not to get their expectations too high. Sigh. That show started off so well.

ooo long time no hear DB podcast 😱

I know! I hope they release one before the month is up. They did such a good job catching up before and if they don’t release one soon they will be behind again haha.

Me too! I loved Javabeans’ taste in music. I wonder if they stopped it because of copyright issues.

Are there any others who really didn\’t care about the husband hunting in 1988? I don\’t blame people for caring because hey, the writer put it in and wanted you to care to keep watching, but there was SO much more to the story than the romance. It actually irritates me to read the comments on the 1988 recaps and see SOOO many people just going back and forth talking about the loveline when there was so much more to talk about. I don\’t know.

When I watched Reply 1988, I cared about the husband hunting mainly because I wanted to know if my guess is right, buy you’re right. Reply 1988 offers so much more rather than just the love storyline. This drama has everything that I could ask for: friendship, love, neighbour relationship, family etc. It’s my favorite drama of all time. This drama gives me so much laughter and cry at the same time. To me, this drama is realistic and perfect.

I was spoiled about who the husband was before I started, but when I watched it I realised the husband riddle isn’t as central as it is in 97. So I was quite surprised, like you, to find the comments were very focused on who’s the husband.

I don’t actually consider the love triangle characters the lead characters; it’s really the story of everyone living on that street, and all different kinds of love, not just romantic.

I completely agree. 🙂 The family dynamics and friendships between everyone in that alley definitely were the focus of the show. I cried a few times throughout the show and not a single time was because of any sort of romance. I cried because of Bo-ra and her dad, I cried because of Jeong-hwan and his mom, I cried because of the family connection that developed between Seo-won and Taek’s respective families. Never because of the love triangle, though.

The family angle was really good and I think it was the main thing about the show. I dropped it after the episodes started becoming 1 hour 44 minutes in length. Other than that, I really liked it.

I didn’t really care for it in the whole series tbh. 1988 (so far for me, I’m halfway into the series) is working to be my favourite in the series because they don’t just focus on the romance and the mystery, but family and friendships between the kids and the adults and that makes it great.

Rewatching High School King of Savvy and Grandpa is still my favorite character

I just finished Answer Me 1988 and wow, during those last two episodes I cried like a baby. Never before in my life have I seen such a fantastic, tender, and heartwarming portrayal of what it means to be family, what it means to have true friends. This is a story that I think will stay in my heart for the rest of my life.

I’m really unhappy about the Kocowa situation. Also, when I try to watch Reunited Worlds on the mobile app, it says it is 7.99/mo! Wth? Even 6.99/mo is a lot compared to DF/Viki’s 4.99!

It really rubs me the wrong way that they are trying to steal customers from DF and Viki while charging a higher price. It’s so dumb, but if they really do have some sort of partnership with KBS/MBC/SBS that gives them the sole rights to all their shows (or at least for currently airing shows) then I don’t know what’s going to happen. It would be one thing if they were charging the same price as the other two but I don’t want to pay $6.99 (and definitely not $7.99). I don’t know if I’ll have a choice, though, if I want to continue watching dramas legally.

Okay: thoughts on kocowa.com? No way I am paying for 3 subscriptions so I need to know if watching Reunited Worlds is worth dropping my DF subscription. Or finding… other means of watching…

2

I thought the same thing so I checked it out.
You can watch the first episode and look around the site before getting any kind of subscription and they have a 1 month free trial.
I’m going to use the month to figure out if I’m going to drop DF or Viki while this show airs…because Reunited Worlds is <3

The best out-of-context drama line ever.

Are there any good dramas set in 1980? The time period of the flashbacks in Healer (well, the ones not in 1992)? It\’s such a fascinating period in history, with the Gwangju Uprising and everything.

2
4

This isn’t a drama – it’s an MV for 2 songs by a group called SPEED. Ji Changwook, Ha Sukjin and Park Boyoung star (Park Boyoung also features in one of the songs). It’s set during the Gwangju Uprising, but obviously, not focused on it per se. This particular video compiled both MVs into one video.

I only know of Answer me 1988. It does address a little bit of current events at the time, like the student demonstration against corruption and the Olympics in Seoul at the time. But it is not action. It is more a coming of age story.

    1
    0

I think maybe Sandglass? Also seem to recall that the movie The Attorney deals with the student uprisings and is set in the 80s, but I haven’t seen either of them and might just be misremembering their synopses lol.

I’m not sure if Giant is set specifically in the 1980 but I think part of it does cover the ’80’s

Finally going to watch Answer Me 1994 and 1988. AM1997 is my fave drama of all and I have put the others off for fear I won\’t like them as much! But I have watched 1997 5+ times, so it is past time.

6

    1988 is brilliant!
1994 not so much. I left it somewhere around the middle.
This coming from someone who has watched AM 1997 5-6 times too! 🙂

    2

you have to be ready though, that some episodes of Reply 1988 were way over one hour long! You´ll watch a movie with every episode! better get some pop corn.

I\’m freaking obsessed with Suspicious Partner. I don\’t know how this happened.

I love the characters in Suspicious Partner (I\’m on ep 7). Ji-wook is actually a good person, like a truly good person. I want a Ji-wook in my life. We need more Ji-wooks in the world.

and lawyer Byeon is forever young on the inside. mr Bang is a fangirl undercover. and Eun Hyuk is a persistent little baboon and I really want Ji Wook to make peace with him cause he has so much love cmon making finger hearts? I feel like reconciliation is already on the way though. the two already have an involuntary sync sometimes. Bong Hee is my vitamin. seriously, I hate seeing women drunk in dramas, but I cant hate it when it is Nam Ji Hyun being a baby koala and giggling shyly. put them all together and that office feels like a community.

    6
    1

Oh and how refreshing it is that no second lead is arm wrestling over the first lead’s girl? LOL when bong hee and eun hyuk went like we don’t need to have heartbreaks, we could totally have each other..and then ‘naaah’. That was so hilarious and cool which we don’t get to see in typical kdramas lol. And giving tips over how to make ji wook jealous? I can’t with these two LOL.

Ji Il-joo is pretty cute, but after Age of Youth I always see him as Ye-eun\’s abusive boyfriend. Even after WFKBJ. I guess it\’s a testament to how convincing he was in that role!

4

Forgot to add, that’s why I immediately didn’t trust him while watching Suspicious Partner lol

But what about Healer where he played one half of the loving journalist couple who were parents to Junghoo?

I honestly didn’t even remember that he played Jung-hoo’s dad while watching Age of Youth until I looked him up. Despicable characters are hard for me to shake off! When the performance is convincing, at least.

Ah. I guess he had a more lasting impression from Healer on me.

Okay, Chan-young was pretty cool confronting Se-jung with MUSH&Co. Or maybe it\’s because I have a little crush on the actor, hehe.

14

Nah. Chanyoung is a squishy puppy, you shouldn’t feel bad for liking him. You’ll end up liking him by the end anyway, you’re just starting early.

    4
    1

and yes, he was pretty cool. wouldn’t it be ironic if sejung fell even more for him after that? XD

Anyone else notice in The Liar and His Lover (at least the DF ver) sometimes when the camera cuts to a different angle the filter they use disappears for the tiniest split of a second? Is it just DF?

have you tried watching it raw with viu subs (more accurate than DF subs)? I didn’t notice the change in filter but perhaps I’m not perceptive?

I like to watch my dramas on my roku, so I prefer watching on DF (although really I would prefer watching on Viki, but I’ll take what I can get). Also I have their lowest subscription ($12/yr) but it’s a subscription nonetheless and I should probably utilize it lol. I know their subs are not very accurate, there are times when I catch inaccuracies with my very low level of Korean comprehension, but I like the ease of the roku apps to watch dramas on. 🙂 Viki is my first option for drama-watching (or Netflix if available… which is rare), then DF, then less legal means lol.

Aw.. a lot of nuances in the dialogue gets lost, or misinterpreted, or even mistranslated with DF, which means some viewers will be upset about something, only for the reason they get upset or misunderstand what happens not to exist. Viki is much better, followed by Viu, but it’s sad Viki didn’t get the license for the drama.

I\’m rewatching Answer Me 1997 for the millionth time (just about to start episode 16, sad). Man, my love for this show knows no limits. Every time I watch it I love it more and more. It\’s just SO GOOD

Finally watching The Liar and His Lover! It’s exactly what I want in a youthful music drama. So bright and fresh. Totally onboard with So-rim/Han-gyul but the guy who plays Chan-young is pretty cute.

Trying really hard to study Ethics right now. SO boring. My mind is actually wandering to the plots of the last dramas I watched. I ban myself from dramas for 2 weeks and they still distract me!!! 😭
