Early this year, I wasn't concerned with the Oppas going to military. There were only a few names I like are enlisting. But now, that's has changed. It seems all my favorites and the ones we see a lot in TV are going. That's no fair. South Korea, why are you doing this to us.

Not my favorites, but still a force to reckoned with
Boys Over Flowers
W - Two Worlds
Gaksital (haven't watched)

The sad thing is not a lot of new actors are filling in to replace them.

Tbh, I'm excited to see new faces, not necessary the new actors but also the rising actors and underrated ones which are talented. About time to see someone like Yeon Woo Jin who is under radar before to shine because he has always been good. Ji Hyun Woo, Kim Ji Hoon, Yoon Hyun Min and some more actors in 30s deserve to headline weekdays' drama instead of weekend drama. At least for me, that won't be a big loss. We also have some actors who came back from military.

I do have dramas that i like with some new faces, and I do look forward to seeing them. But their dramas are not in my top 10. Partly because I categorize them as youth dramas.

The Liar and his Lover came close to being in top 10. And I see potential from the new actors there.

I also liked Solomon's Perjury, and there are lots of of new faces there that I want to see again.

Sassy Go Go and Page Turner are another one. They are not rookies anymore, but the main actors there are who I look forward to the most.

Oh yes maybe I am not huge fan of most of actors in 20s that I don't really feel with their leaving. It will be great to see more of these new actors in the future. I didn't watch some of your lists but have heard many good things about them.

I'm glad that some of my top favorites have already finished their duty X)

I hope dramagods will give you the strength to be able to wait for your Oppas ;)

Yep, it's everyone I know. And some of them are not getting a lot of warning, either! (Lee Jong Suk, for one.) It seems they really want to crack down and shoo everyone out at once.

And Kang Ha Neul - where did that come from! I swear I thought he's in his early or mid twenties.

I am hoping Seo In Guk would come back sooner (2018?) but I'd hate to see him getting a lashback from knetz.

Hello. So I started painting watercolor again after a very long dry spell. I'm practicing eyes and I realize I either forgot how to paint, or I was never good at painting eyes to begin with, lol. Which is sad because I've always loved making art but I'm very lazy at learning and improving.

Oh and I watch Habaek while painting. It's actually more fun than I thought. Habaek has said quite a few things that got me thinking. Especially the part when he said how good it is to have someone you can trust completely. Except my mom I don't really have anyone like that, hmmmm.

Did you take your inspiration from the poor artist in ep 1 who was trying to paint Habaek but couldn't finish up the eyes?

The beautiful visuals from that series must help get your creative juices flowing.

I'd love to have time to paint (oil painting for me)!

Fantasy landscapes are my favourites.

Ironically I forgot about the portrait artist in Habaek! I did try to find a clear, nicely angled screencap of Habaek in his blue hair glory to use as reference though. Heee.

Yes the visuals make me drool. XD I'd love the paint the one in the teaser/first episode's last scene but my skill isn't there yet ~

And heol oil painting! That one's even harder to master :-O

Hi Beanies !

Today is my 20th birthday :D Let my twenties begin !

Father is Strange : Ep 41 was emotionally heavy for Mi Young. Her scene with Yu Ju is my favorite. MY had to wait a longtime and finally got a sincere apologize. I'm pleased with how far Yu Ju's character came. Since both Actor Ahn and MY are aware that they're not siblings, I hope their relationship will get better. Mom has been given hints about the big reveal and its consequences. I don't know how they will resolve this without destroying the family's truth. HY playing detective is interesting and it's entertaining to see JH jealous.
I knew it ! I knew Aunt was pregnant ! With twins to take care of, they don't have enough to send cutie Min Ha to science high school after all. I laughed when Chairman was flustered by Ra Young's no marriage plans HA !

Woman of Dignity : Why did Bok Ja introduce herself as Park Ji Young ? It must be someone 's name that was important in her life. I never had so much fun seeing people fighting, slapping and pulling hair haha.

Happy Friday :D

Happy birthday! I think she did it as a fresh start in her new role as... is she a VP of the company, now? If someone looks her up with the name "Ji Young", he's not likely to trace it back to her days of misery and shadiness. At least that's how I understood it. I really love that show for so many reasons, they way it explores friendships and romantic relationships, the facts that all the characters are mature (in age, I mean. Behavior-wise it might be another story, lol). It's not often that I've seen the main characters in a drama be two lead actresses. Love it! And I'm a fan of Kim Su Nah.

1) Dear Woman of Dignity,

I'm sorry for doubting you before. I started it yesterday and I'm hooked. I'm at epi 4 now but I can't wait to see more. Makjang is not a bad thing if it is written right and here is probably of good makjang drama.

Sincerely,
me.

2) Forest of Secrets - the end is approaching. I'm not ready but I'm also curious what will be the ending.

3) School 2017 - Why do I keep repeating some scenes and also the BTS? LOL..Especially Mori's scenes.

4) I keep re-watching Manhole's teaser and it's still entertaining. I hope this drama delivers because I just need something hilarious.

5) Flasify was OK for premiere week, not really exciting yet, I going to try at least until the second week.

6) Criminal Mind - I tried first epi, but stopped in the middle because couldn't get into it. I think I'll try it again next week probably after FOS ended.

Except for no.1 which I haven't watched , some comments :
2) FoS : +1, I want to know the truth but it'll also mean the end of this amazing drama T_T , if the finale really has 30mins added it will ease the pain, maybe ?
3) I 've been honest with myself I have a crush on Kim Jung Hyun <3 , I liked him in Jealousy Incarnate but his character didn't have that much screen time, so I plan to start Rebel next week , seeing all the Mori comments by beanies make me have high expectations ^^'
4) The teaser is hilarious but I'll wait some weeks before starting this one, drama schedule is full now
5) ep1-2 was so so, but ep3-4 grabbed my interest, even if it's a little Chief Kim-like , I love the bickering relationship with his boss
6) 1st ep it didn't deliver compare to the original, ep2 was better but it still lacks something :/

2) FOS - how can we be ready? I want to watch the finale so much but it would also mean the inevitable. Now, I am already wondering how long would it take before we get to watch another drama of such quality?

3) School - Mori is sooo HOTTTT!!!

4) I never thought of watching this because of the inane title but the teasers are so fun.

5) Haven't watch Falsify...no urge too unless I see great reviews and there don't seem to be any.

6) Criminal Minds - you found it hard to get into too? I can't even pin point why because it wasn't bad. It just didn't hook.

I think I need some break after FOS before start any other legal thriller drama.. But I've started Falsify, like @kudoran said, epi 3-4 were better. For Falsify and Criminal Mind, I don't want to give up without any fight, for the sake of the casts.

I was afraid it will be like The Perfect Wife while I enjoyed it, I don't want to see another similar drama again for this year. Luckily it isn't. Bok ja is creepy but she is badass. I love Ah Jin too, everytime she preparing shake for her husband before his 'morning exercise', I am so angry! Even Ji Hoo can sense what her father is up to! This drama succesfully made me have love-hate relationship with all characters and I'm simply can't take anyone's side.

2. I take another route. I have dates n gatherings this wkend and luckily, next wk is a busy week for me. So lets pretend FOS is not ending...just yet ???? I am in my kdrama slump since last year and watch FOS because Bae Doona. It is been ages she is in a drama and I like legal drama, so why not, I said to myself. FOS definitely kills my slump with style~ But now we approaching its ending, ..... I rewatch Defendant the other day cause a friend just started watching and asking about certain plot. I regretted so much cause now I like it less. After getting movie-quality FOS, kdrama seems....lacking? ??? And we probably need to wait for some time until we get something like FOS again. Well, I have few jodoramas to watch anyways ???

For those North American beanies concerned about losing access to new kdramas because of DF and Viki not getting licensing:

I saw yesterday that Kocowa does have an app available.

I downloaded it off of iTunes yesterday onto my iPad. Haven't had a chance to test it yet though. Anyone else?

I'm also not paying for a subscription yet. I don't mind ads. But will they make new content exclusive only to paid subscribers? Stay tuned....

I am going to be checking in on any news about Kocowa but am not subscribing yet. I have a "watch" list of k-dramas a mile long, 10 or so dramas on my "try again" list and 5 or so dramas on my "why did I never finish that" list. Add in the C-dramas, a few J-dramas and T-dramas, and I'll be busy for a while.

I am actually surprised on how much my viewing taste skews to the cable dramas, but I know that one big drama will come that I have to see so maybe I can save the free trial and binge that whenever it happens.

Like you, I don't have an issue with ads but I do not want another subscription service since I already have DF, Viki and also Netflix.

Oh dear. this is not good news to read on a Friday - or any day for that matter. I too subscribe to DF, NF and Viki.
However, I do watch the latest dramas on Dramafire and they get them subbed and up fast, sometimes before DF! I wonder it that will continue when the other two stop showing the dramas. :-(
The other site I've used is Kissasian, but that site is getting more annoying ads all the time. ugh. I know I know, it's free, but when some web site starts playing in a window that I didn't open I get a little cranky.
Does anyone know when this is supposed to happen?
Oh I'm so bummed!!!!!! But I'm glad to find out about the other site.
Are there other sites that the rest of you watch other than DF and Viki?
Thanks Beanies!!!

Kocowa is supposedly North & South America. The have exclusive rights for the big 3 broadcast networks; nothing else should be affected.

1
reply

Required fields are marked *

I've signed up for their free "member" status.

This gives access (with ads) to stuff at least 3 weeks old but not more than a year old. So no re-watching really old favorites, and no watching new stuff in time to reply to DB recaps :( This is also supposed to be available to people who haven't signed up.

"Membership" also supposedly gives access to really new stuff in the first 24 hours after broadcast in Korea, but that part of the site often says "We couldn't find any results" even when there should have been stuff broadcast within the last 24 hours :(

See http://help.kocowa.com/4365

So far they have had precisely zero shows available for free when I wanted to watch them. I've watched a bit of some other shows just to test and it was a reasonably good experience. No many pauses, good picture quality, etc. But it doesn't help much to offer episode 5 of a series on "blink and you'll miss it" basis if I missed 1 - 4 and want to watch in proper sequence.

Membership required giving them an email address. I set up a special new one - so far no spam on it.

Overall not happy. May eventually summon the ambition to post some big rants on my fan wall.

Huh. I hadn't realized the 3 weeks - 1 year deal for the free shows. I guess I just didn't check any in the right time frame. I just knew that I wasn't able to watch anything over 24 hours old. Which means that I was watching Reunited Worlds on the day it airs, come hell or high water or need to sleep.

And yeah, I'm with all of you. Grumpy about yet another service to sign up for, and frustrated that they launched without working through all the bugs. So free membership for now. I probably will shell out later, once they get their ducks in a row and I'm less pissed.

I see about 200 shows or so, including some of the older ones I missed. But their UI kind of sucks, very little in the way of sorting and filters - you kind of have to know what you are looking for and search for it. And some show names are changed.

I live in an area where streaming means eternal buffering and need either an Apple TV box or Roku. Kocowa says it will not have a Roku app until 2018 (WHEN in 2018??); II don't want to have to buy the Apple TV box when I already own a Roku box. Not exactly great planning on Kocowa's part. VERY UNHAPPY about loss of dramas on DF and Viki (I have subscriptions to both).

2

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, I've seen a bunch of articles on them that literally say the same thing but the take away was they will have smart tv apps out later this year. Which I took to mean sometime next year. As I said in last weeks OT, this isn't going to go the way Kocowa thought it was.

I'm doing their free month trial, but completely not impressed with their tech. Videos won't play on two of my desktops, they only play on the iOS phone app. No way really to troubleshoot or contact them (I emailed them, but didn't hear back, and am not expecting to). Also no fast-forward or rewind buttons like on Viki or DF, and if I try to use the slider, it doesn't work. I probably won't continue after the free trial. Oh well.

Ugh another streaming service I will need to eventually get. I use PS4 and Amazon Fire Stick to stream dramas so if it doesn't have an app that works on those I will need to wait until it does. I also saw some really low reviews about the streaming service so I will hold off until they get their shit together. Or maybe I'll subscribe long enough to watch Reunited Worlds and then cancel.

I have the free trial month membership. I've been able to watch on my desktop and on the app. They don't have the 10 sec rewind or fast forward button. The picture is okay. It's really lonely though. There are no reviews and comments like DF or Viki even Netflix. There isn't enough shows either. I don't think they were ready for this roll-out at all.
One thing I do like is how quickly the subs and episodes come out (it really is almost simultaneous) but I wouldn't trade that for everything else.

10 days away from dramaland and I have tons of shows piled up. 4 to catch up with and 4 new shows to start with. Phew! I ended up dropping a few shows obviously and have only left SDQ and FIS on my list. Waiting to get some time to watch Reunited Worlds, The king loves and Criminal Minds. Need reviews for these please.

Moreover for me this time in this year has plenty of dramas but 1) hardly any of them is crack level-atleast for me except SDQ. 2) Even if there are good shows, there are not so good osts. The last osts I liked were in Chicago Typewriter. Maybe its because that i have checked most ahows but contibued with some and osts keep coming throughout the show airs. Let me know if there are any good osts. Also when Nam Hye Seung attaches to a dramas ost.

I really loved both Reunited Worlds and The King Loves. Haven't tried Criminal Minds yet.

7 Day Queen was the first saeguk I found myself fully invested in. I kept trying saeguks, but never really connected with them like I did with contemporary dramas. I tried The King Loves on the strength of Song Ji-na, and have found another sauguk I connect with. Maybe I have turned a corner. Yay!

Reunited Worlds is doing everything I wanted and didn't get from The Best Hit. We've got this beautiful boy trying to reconnect with the people who he left behind, seeing the hole he left when he died, and trying to make things right. It's lovely.

The first episode is solid but the second episode is better. This has always been a plot driven procedural tv show (as I'm sure you know) and it is in the k-drama as well with cases straight from the US tv show. We start to see more of the personalities of the team in the second episode specifically some humor.

I was never a super fan of the US show; it was more in okay territory to me so I don't have too much of an emotional attachment for any of the characters. I will say even though I liked Tunnel and Voice, I do like to see a cop show without the time travel and the super duper hearing. The team is relying on their skills alone, unrealistic though we all know they may be,, but I find that refreshing. That's just my take.

Matthew Gray Gubler is a wall. I don't think any Korean Actor enable to portrait a perfect role of Spencer Reid. But at least they cast the right actor.

I think DB will recap Criminal Minds. However this drama start with a good ratings.

@innasalvatore I read some mixed review about CM especially on Korean version Reid. I totally love Reid and watch S12 because of him tbh. I watched some of the cuts and ...... yeah..... Hopefully he gets better in coming episodes. But since I'm all about FOS right now, I waiting for recap before watching.

OT week #25! I've been contributing my own take on Kdramas for half a year now! I'm fiercely competitive, even with myself, so I can't very well stop this run, right?

Lots of stuff going on this weekend. Mother will be in town, another freethekimchi.com meeting tomorrow, last golf tournament for the kids (who are playing for 1st place in our league!) and just hanging out with friends. I'm glad I only have one drama on the docket and have DRAMABEANS to fill me in on the rest!

And that drama is "The King Loves.." I LOVE the "The King Loves." It's gorgeous! From the costuming, the settings, the cinematography, and the actors, my eyes are consumed with the pretty. I've always thought Yoona was a very natural actress since I saw her in "Love Rain" and I think she is perfect here. My mother also likes Yoona, so guess what I'm doing while she's here--rewatching the first 4 (or 8) episodes! Yay, mother/daughter bonding is always a good thing, especially over Kdramas!

I'm also "holding down the fort" this week in clinic while my partners are both on vacay, and on call lastnight, I had to manage a patient who has idiopathic anaphylaxis--that's right, we don't have any idea why he tries to die every other day from an allergic reaction. It's so bad that I finally told the ER I would manage him from his home so that he wouldn't keep coming in there and getting >$1000.00 bill every time. And guess what? He called last night. So as I was managing him (thank God for self-injectible epinephrine) and telling him to call me every 30 minutes over the course of the middle of the night, I got to watch a web drama with Kim Young Kwang called "KARA: Secret Love" where he has a small 2 episode story with (I guess) a girl from that group. I didn't get her name, but she was also very good. And the cinematography was good here too. But what made it give me the feels was KYK in UNIFORM. OMG, it was like I was looking at my husband, with hair. Because when I met my husband we were both in the military and he had his head shaved and was NOT very attractive. Now, my husband only resembles KYK in his height *6ft 2in* which it totally swoon-worthy next to *5ft 4in* me (or for those of you inclined to think in centimeters: 188 cm vs 163 cm) and that actress in the web drama was tiny and so adorable. (I have a screen shot on my wall if you're interested.) It was just what I needed after seeing a tragic KYK in "Lookout." And also confirmed that I WILL write a screen-play or book someday about how I met my husband and our love story because I love it and him and KYK could play him any day of the week!

So, a quick conversation between him and I about what he and the kids did on my son's birthday (as I had to work a 12 hour day that day).

Hubby: The kids really enjoyed going to the arcade for a couple hours today, playing all the video games that they could play.

Me: Did you play too?

Hubby: Of course! But...

...the daughter beat her brother and me on a racing game 15 out of 22 times.

Me: What??? How did that happen?

Hubby: I think she was punking us. She would be in last place, then 5 second before the end of the race, she'd run into us, slamming us against the wall and then win by a nose! I would be ahead for 99% of the game and think I had this, and then BOOM, she comes out of nowhere!

Me: *laughing hysterically* *That's MY girl.* Be sweet and unassuming. Let the boys think they have you, then pull a rabbit out of your hat.

Hubby: She's just like you, and some Kdrama heroines too. You just can't tell under that sweet face what she can do!

Me: Hahahahahahaha!

Moral of the Story: Raise your girls strong and you won't have to worry about them standing up for themselves.

2nd moral: I might be raising a female gamer. LOL. But I had to sit her down to explain birthday etiquette--probably should have let your brother win a little more on his birthday, honey...;-)

3rd moral: Six months on the OT and loving every second! Thanks for a wonderful community, Beanies!

Plus the little titbit of advice at the end- need to let the boys win sometimes on their birthday and not show them up all the time. Allow them to think they are better some of the time, in order to keep the peace. Good advice- will serve her well, even after she gets married! Hahaha! ?

Oh, congratulations! Well-wishes for a healthy baby girl! So my advice would be, have a sweet daddy around who does housework or cooks because she sees that the woman doesn't have to stay in that role and she is welcome to pursue other endeavors. Also, get her involved in sports (my daughter does Tae Kwon Do and golf) and she's physically pretty strong too. And always tell her she's an amazing person (of course) but let her fail and get back up again, showing her that just because to fall, you don't quit or die, even if the boys tell you you can't do it. Luckily, my daughter hasn't had too much of that--she's the only girl in this golf league and she's been paired with some wonderful kids and it's been wonderful to see them interact with her. (I'm secretly setting her up with a blonde-headed kid who is SO, SO sweet to her and to everyone else too--lol!)

Congratulations!!! Wishing you a smooth pregnancy and delivery and a healthy baby girl! ❤️

Just be the best mom that you can be, don't get too stressed, because it's tough, especially at the start (or at least it was to me). And don't be afraid to look for support should you need it in times where you want to tear your hair out. And just do what you feel is right- there are 10000000000 ways to parent, and there is very little black and white, just lots and lots of grey, so don't worry about doing what everyone else is telling you.
That's what I wish I was told before I started. Haha!
But it's an awesome journey. Crazy and exhausting and frustrating at times, but the love is indescribable. Congrats again! ❤️

Finished watching C-drama The Disguiser, it was an amazing series, almost as good as Nirvana in fire.

Also checking out Drop Dead Diva, the American version since there's going to be a Korean remake, and I'm surprisingly enjoying it quite a bit! It's a light watch and has a lot of heart.

Haha. That's so true. That name had no bearing on the show at all. In fact you are right, it's a hurdle that needed to be overcome for recommendations. I had to explain once how it totally wasn't about doctors romancing one another in hospital.

3

Although I think I was explaining more to justify why I was watching it- that it wasn't just "another fluffy kdrama" to my non kdrama watching colleagues and cynical husband ?

2

Applying my limited knowledge of Asian languages and a little experience with bad translations, I think they should have called it "Idealistic" instead of "Romantic".

Master: God of Noodles

Maybe not the "worst" title but always made me cringe-giggle.

Happy Friday Beanies!

It's a good Friday because I've ended my kdrama drought by starting Criminal Minds. It started off slow but the best part of it by far is Lee Junki- he captivates in every scene he is in. I'm now a fan. Oppa!
My full thoughts are here:
https://mydramalesslife.wordpress.com/2017/07/28/criminal-minds-episode-1-2/

Anyone else watching and enjoying?

Also, I've gone mad and placed an order for the vizbig version of the entire Rurouni Kenshin manga off Amazon. ? Amazon is amazing! My wallet hates it, but I'm ignoring my rational sensible side for now. Haha. Kenshin was such a part of my childhood anime experience I couldn't resist. Anyone else love the manga as much as me?

Is Falsify good? Has anyone watched? It's next on my watch list. Also, waiting for the premiere of Manhole: Feel so good.

Talking about Manhole: Feel so good- it's such a terrible/hilarious name! Lol. I'm wondering if this is one of the worst kdrama titles ever. So can everyone think of the worst/most hilarious title you've come across before? Let's have a list! I want a good laugh. ?

Have a good weekend all!

Falsify 1st episode was confusing. Too much was happening and one character after another was introduced. 1st week and hero is still living the life of chief kim. same stuff corruption and killing innocent citizens and especially target the girls. Kdrama writers love to create victim out of Females. 7/10
Same cliche villains and same cliche killer having a some speicific habit or traits.

Criminal Minds - The guy is handsome but every other was annoying. Too talkative team and everyone acting like gary stu. It lacked urgency. Overall 7/10

Both shows can't compete against Stranger at all.

I liked it overall. It's just not a character driven show, even the original. I'm a little sad about that because there are some really good actors here and i just don't know if the constraints of the genre are going to allow for much.

I liked Garcia and Reid and the gang in the original version but it did take a while to really flesh everyone out.

Hello All! I hope everyone had a good week. This has been a long one for me. I got back from vacay where I watched my young nephews and I am exhausted. I had a frustrating week at work so I am definitely ready to chill this weekend.

In dramaland, I finished SUSPICIOUS PARTNER which was good. I think it was a few episodes too long, but I enjoyed it. It made me want to check out Ji Chang Wook in other dramas so there is a plus. I am going to finish LIAR GAME this weekend and I am super excited about it. It is so good. I will also continue COFFEE PRINCE. I am really liking that drama and am sort of kicking myself that I didn't start it sooner

There are a couple of other dramas I am thinking of starting but have yet to decide. Any suggestions are appreciated. :) Has anyone heard anything about the Chinese drama LOVE ME IF YOU DARE from a couple of years ago. I saw a random thing about it and may check it out.

So last week I wrote on the downvote button and they are gone now ?

I appreciate that Dramabeans hear beanie's laments on this issue and decided it's better to do without.

I have nothing against the downvote button once I got used to getting downvoted. However, it upset some people more and of late, certain threads attracted a lot of downvoting. It just doesn't seem to serve its purpose anymore or rather the ills outweigh the benefits.

This week I am behind in all my dramas except for FOS. It's a drama which I'll sorely miss when it's over. I am also scared that it has set a bar so high that I will find it harder to watch other dramas. The immediate casualty is those of similar genre. I watched Criminal Minds and find it so meh for the lack of a better word. It's not just the FOS effect but I've watched quite a number of crime/thriller dramas by now and expect more. It doesn't help that I find none of the characters interesting. They are all very cool and definitely have their backstory and baggage but I am not piqued. Usually a drama would start with one of their 'best' cases so as to wow and hook viewers from the start. I hope this is not true for CM because the first case really isn't impressive.

The reason I loved forest of secrets, (and the same reason for not getting into criminal minds), is that FOS shows, that the powerplay in the society can be taken care of at an intellectual level. FOS is more of a mind game, while CM is too much action, even the mysteries are solved by more running and physical movement, which isn't the case for FOS. I almost feel like reading a book while watching FOS, and needless to say, the camera work, cinematography, the acting everything is in sync, so there is just no way to feel disinterested. From day 1, it grabbed my 100% attention, and there was no going back. Compared to that CM is too much on the face and I felt not interested enough to get into the process, to know what's actually happening. Maybe it's more to do with the fact that it's a remake, I don't know, maybe the original 'is' actually interesting and nothing like the Korean version, American dramas are way too realistic, and has a tendency of omitting emotions in their shows, so that could be another reason why CM wasn't appealing to me.

Hi all:

Let me just say that when it comes to Kdramas, I have to repeat that the only thing I have to fear is fear itself. If only I could believe all that. I already stopped watching 7-Day Queen, a drama I really liked, because I told myself I couldn't deal with the inevitable break-up of the OTP. Curse you, unchangeable historical incident! You're always a spoiler for my dramas!

And now I'm pondering wanting to drop Lovers in Bloom, my daily on KBS World TV on youtube because of all that stress. I swear! If it weren't for lies, extreme secrecy, and folks simply not speaking up, there wouldn't be much tension in some of these dailies. All those secrets make stories simultaneously boring and predictable. After all, we all "know" a character isn't going to speak up..and aaargh!

Currently loving: The Eternal Love (not Peach Blossoms, which also share that title, but the one with the gorgeous Xing Zhao Lin) OMG, what a great drama! Jump in now, guys! It's a cros sbetween oh my ghostess and the time travel body swap drama featuring first prince, 8th prince, and 14th prince. If you llike Chinese dramas, I highly recommend it.

Also loving: Stranger (Secret Forest) This drama is utter perfection. I can say nothing against it. And for once, the kdrama cops are seriously intelligent.

Duel: Well, I had to cast all need for sensible writing out of the window and just sit back for the ride for this one. It is pretty much paint by numbers action and doesn't have the soul that Stranger has because it is so intent on hitting the high action parts that it forgets that it rushes from action set piece to action set piece. But eh, cute villain. What to do!

Father is Strange: Love it! Lee Joon...so good! so handsome! he has seriously grown as an actor.

Liking "The King Loves" -- been a while since I've seen one of those noble royal friendships. I've never really liked the actor who plays the friend but am really liking him in this. And of course Im Si Wan is adorable and holding his own. Love the friendship between those two and the open-ness. Not too many secrets between these two

Awaiting the beginning of the new crop of dramas.

Have a great weekend, all!

I should ask myself why I decided to watch Seven Day Queen, and I guess the answer is that I'm a sucker for punishment. I hope that the last two episodes will not affect me too much. Perhaps there will something bright and hopeful to hold onto, even if history cannot be escaped.

I've found almost all the OSTs I want on iTunes, many on Spotify and even some on Amazon music. Sometimes you'll have to go to a site like Dramawiki, copy the Korean title from there and then paste that into the search bar on iTunes. Sometimes you have to figure out the alternative English titles for a show and search with that! (I searched in vain for Goblin only to find that the music service calls it Guardian, what?) Often only a few songs will be released during the run of the show and the entire OST is available when the show ends. Good luck! OSTs are such an important part of loving kdrama.

@bips99 As movie recommendation : Yoo Ah In had a small role in Elegant Lies where Kim Hee Ae played a mother. It was funny to see them again after SLA. He played his first villain in Veteran, it's really good. Antique Bakery is one of his earlier work where he's a real cutie. Punch is a funny and emotional movie. Tough As Iron is quite good but he did better.
Dramas : He played with Kim Tae Hee in historical drama Jang Ok Jung and had a supporting role in The Man Who Cant' Get Married. I didn't watch so I don't know if they're good.

He was very good in Man Who Can't Get Married (it's been a while since I watched, but I think I liked the original Japanese version better BUT I really enjoyed YAI's character in the Korean version).

It was so obviously that YAI didn't care how he looked – he was willing to look as terrible as can be for a role. Not image conscious, but focused on the acting and doing well at it. Although many of his more recent dramas haven't piqued my interest (I do want to watch Chicago Typewriter though, just haven't managed yet), but I consider him a versatile, solid and very interesting actor.

When an old colleague visits from Paris, it's a hoot and a half to hear them parlez vous-ing to beat the band. And he doesn't murder anyone with a kettlebell, thank heavens...

Jang Ok Jung wasn't the best historical drama I have watched but Yoo Ah In was terrific and it is something good if we don't mind some heart breaking story. I enjoyed it because it's still heavy on politic, and I enjoyed to have love-hate relationship with both King Sukjong and Jang Ok Jung (the main leads).

Man Who Can't Get Married was a fun to watch! I loved it because Ji Jin Hee was so weird. hah. Yoo Ah In was super cute too.

Hello Beanies!

I just finished watching 7DQ episode 18 like 30 mins ago, and I'm still recovering from it. I need to watch some funny videos to ease my pain. Gosh, it's so sad and I cried a bucket. ? My heart and soul go to Chae Gyung. Anyway, I'm happy that this drama finally get 7.7% rating! At least our wishes from last week's rating discussion were granted. Now let's hope they will break at least 9% rating next week, though I still hope for this show to get 2 digits rating.

I don't have much to say about my shows this week because I've been commenting diligently on recaps! But I'm curious about the final verdict for The Best Hit. Beanies who've finished it, would you recommend it although the plot shifted to a heavy focus on a love triangle?

For some background: I'm not a huge fan of love triangles/ love geometry, but I don't mind a drama focusing on romance as long as the characterisation is well-developed. I'd prefer the female character to be well-written. I'm asking about TBH because it seems the plot had potential to be richer than just a love triangle, and in such cases I may feel distracted by the skewed focus on romance.

@ 28 PurpleTeapot

If you keep your eye on the inner development of the the characters, and focus on Yu Hyun-jae's / Da-bong's triangle kimgbap instead of a superficial showdown between him and his son, THE BEST HIT can be viewed from the standpoint of numerous people realizing their dreams. I mean realizing in the senses of both recognizing as well as achieving. This show is about so much more than a romantic rivalry!

I'm a science fiction fan, so the time travel was great fun to me, and provided a nifty solution to enable character development.

The music is terrific, and beautifully underscores the theme of pursuing one's dreams.

I was very touched by a lovely analysis that was posted a couple of days ago on the final recap thread. There's a lot of food for thought, as if the show itself didn't provide enough.

Beware: spoilers! -- But those who watched and loved the show will likely enjoy this thoughtful post as much as I have. I'd come to some of the same conclusions by different routes. This post provided detailed and systematic insight into the main characters' motivations. Bravo!

#78 JY July 25, 2017 at 10:06 PM

As for Choi Woo-seung, I think the character has been written well and in enough detail. I can understand why she acts the way she does. She is not the main character, but she is integral to the show. She has hopes, fears, and dreams, and they're as important as anyone else's.

I enjoy a good tale that focuses on character development. I also enjoy plot-driven dramas. In THE BEST HIT, the initial fantastical events serve as a device to give us a ringside seat from which to view the growing pains and processes of people at various stages of life. Dreaming knows no age limit. ;-)

Big fan of the dream focus this year in dramas. <3 The Best Hit and Fight My Way made it a big part of their shows. Another Sci Fi fan here (Hi!) so Circle and The Best Hit are tapping into that love too.
Anyways thanks for the direction to comment #78. I think both you and JY really did a great job articulating the reasons you loved the show.

@toramona,

You're most welcome! It was such a good post that I wanted to call it out to other fans of THE BEST HIT who missed it. ;-)

I didn't discuss the cast in my comments, but cannot imagine different actors in the various roles. I'd enjoyed Kim Min-jae's turns in ROMANTIC DOCTOR TEACHER KIM and GOBLIN. I'm impressed with his performance (and OST contribution). YSY was a delight. The only other role I'd seen him in when TBH started was MIRROR OF THE WITCH. I ended up marathoning BREAD, LOVE AND DREAMS for him and Joo Won about a month ago, and thoroughly enjoyed it, even if it had evil chaebols running around. ;-)

@toramona July 28, 2017 at 3:05 PM

It's my pleasure to spread the joy. ;-)

Kim Min-jae's role in GOBLIN was in the sageuk portion at the beginning as the young king. I think there were some flashbacks later, but I don't recall the details. He looked great in hanbok, and emitted a kingly vibe, especially when paired with the absolutely radiant Kim So-Hyun as his queen (and General Kim Shin's sister).

I really liked his performance as the ER/surgical nurse in RDTK. If RDTK were to have a season 2, I sure hope they'd bring Nurse Park Eun-tak back to Doldam Hospital.

As for YSY in MIRROR OF THE WITCH, I just learned recently that he'd actually attended a traditional elementary school where he studied the One Thousand Character Classic. Maybe that added a little something to his performance. I'd love to see him in another sageuk.

Thank you! It sounds like something I'll enjoy, I think I'll put it down on my watch list (:

I have conflicting feelings about this drama. I enjoyed it because Yoon Si Yoon is bae. I admire him in that show. He was adorable and fun. The show was like that too at times. It was light and simple.

But objectively, the drama is a mess. The staff didn't have an overall goal of what they want to accomplish. In the end, it was all over the place. I didn't understand the purpose of him time traveling. I couldn't care what happened with the other characters, except for Malsook and Grandpa. So, no need to watch it if you want substance in the drama. But definitely watch it for Yoon Si Yoon.

True, the time travel trope was underutilized, and it wasn't necessary at all, considering how hyun jae had a doppelganger who lives happily in '93 timeline? Boggles my mind. Anyway I'm kind of watching the drama 'nine' now, and it's utterly amazing, the show went to Nepal for shooting and the plot is nothing like the usual kdramas, I am kind of scared while watching the drama since I don't know what to expect any more. I'm not much into the hero, but just for the sake of the story, I'm waiting to see how it unravels.

It didn't really too focus on love triangle at least not to the extent to something like Reply franchise.

This is a show if you love Yoon Shi Yoon and you want some comedy, a little part of slice of life and romance. It is not well written drama but not that terrible.

@purpleteapot
Did I enjoy it? Did i admire/respect it? Would I rewatch it? Would I recommend it to all?
Sigh. There are very dramas where I would answer yes to all the questions.
Is there really a final verdict ? Time passes and our thoughts on dramas could change hence the "Changing Tastes" theme...I'd say I have my opinions in the aftermath of The Best Hit.
Did I enjoy it? Yes, in big part to Yoon Si-Yoon complete magnetism.
Did I admire/respect it? This is in terms of the directing, writing, overall acting, costume, etc. Mmmm I thought the directing and look of it all was top notch. The costume and makeup was pretty great. The writing was still off for me. I really like it in the beginning but as it progressed it felt uneven in a lot of ways. The acting was tough. Some of the actors were spectacular, charming, engaging, serviceable and others were so flat.
Diplomatic answer- I admire that they took a lot of chances with The Best Hit and are part of pushing kdrama's foward into new territories.
Would I rewatch it? Mm..Probably lots of clips and gifs but the whole thing or even whole episodes at the moment I don't think so.
Would I recommend it to all? No, not off the bat. I would have to know you already like kdramas and then ask which kind you like then based off that I'd make the recommendation becaue Yoon Si Yoon really is killer awesome.

As you can see from the other replies, almost everyone else loved The Best Hit. And I am happy for them. Enjoying a show is a good thing. However, it really didn't work for me. Spoilers ahead.

I loved the first few weeks. I was continuously cracking up. And then . . . I've been trying to decide what put me off so thoroughly. Was it that the drama didn't go the way I thought it should? But aren't surprises good? Was it that we were suddenly focusing on romance? That can't be, I love romance. Was it because the hero is a self-absorbed jerk? But I've enjoyed jerk heros before.

I don't know. But by the end I hated Hyun-jae. I didn't feel like he ever grew up. When we met 1994 Hyun-jae, I liked him sooo much better. But then 1994 decided to send 1993 back to the future instead of going himself. Why? I don't know. Because letting his doppelganger play with smartphones was more important to him than seeing his son or not letting the love of his life mourn for 20 odd years. Apparently. Sigh.

I like the Cunning Single Lady picture...was my second kdrama ever! I was just sharing with my coworkers yesterday pics of cutie Seo Kang Joon in that drama. :D

Anyway Seven Day Queen has officially broken my heart and I haven't even watched episode 18 yet. Last week's episode 16 had me sobbing over Seo No's sacrifice and I really hadn't expected that this drama would break me so bad. Thankfully I didn't shed any tears for ep. 17 but my heart did ache watching all the craziness happening on my screen :( Anyway I was at the point of sobbing with last week's episode and I realized I hadn't cried that hard for anything since A Werewolf Boy...man do these kdramas know how to get to our emotions.

I'm all caught up on Bride of Habaek but thought the "cliffhanger" to ep 8 was rather weak since not much has been explained and I don't even know why Habaek was running like that at the end. What did he see? Can someone enlighten me? Ahh I should go back and read the recap for that episode.

From my backlog, I'm watching I Remember You cause I wanted to watch a Seo In Guk drama and I'm having a hard time getting into it and I'm almost halfway through. I think I keep wondering about minor details in the drama and tbh crime shows have never been my preference. So I'll watch til ep 8 and then decide if I should continue or not.

Looking forward to Strongest Deliveryman and Manhole in August!

And no, my first kdrama was Secret Garden...but Oh Hae Young Again was the first kdrama I ever "live-watched" 'cause I wanted to participate in the dramabeans comments and read the reviews as they were being posted and I ended up loving miss Oh Hae Young so much, especially her gripe about her name being so common as my name is also super common. I also have a theory I can't be friends with anyone that has the same name as me so there was so much to relate with in that drama for me. Seo Hyun-jin's performance as OHY just felt so real <3

Happy Friday! I have a half day today and then a 3 day weekend. I'm excited!

Fight My Way Me and my mom binge watched the first 10 episodes last weekend. I am absolutely loving it. I remember reading some of the staff liked the drama but it didn't have that 'something special' for them. For me it has that something special. I'm not even sure what it is but I can't get enough of this drama (I stayed an extra hour at my moms this weekend to watch another episode, which surprised her). I love the relationship between the mains with the best friend to romance trajectory they are taking. Also, Park Seo-Joon and Kim Ji-Won have great chemistry with each other. Only thing I'm not as big into is the secondary romance. I keep flip-flopping on liking then not liking their characters. But overall I am loving this drama and can't wait until I can watch more.

Rules Master of the Mask This one is ok. Has some questionable plots and acting but it's entertaining enough. The main actors are of course amazing in this, but the secondary actors are quite weak. L seems to think good acting is the louder the better so he shouts a lot and Yoon So-Hee has a single look for everything. Thankfully they are the secondary characters so I can overlook the bad acting.

Man to Man Finished this over the weekend. Ending was ok. I did like the drama overall though. It was quite entertaining. I wasn't very convinced on the romance, but that's ok because I was there for the bromance anyways.

Having finished "Suspicious Partner", though I am late to the game, I would like to state my two cents. Overall I liked it, and it is one of the better dramas around. I liked the H/h's relationship, even though the back and forth between them (dating/not dating) frustrated me a bit. I even liked the secondary relationship with Eun Hyuk and Ji Wook's ex-girlfriend (even though the basis of that relationship was all wrong).

What I found most interesting about this show however, is how it dabbled with grey areas, especially when it came to the main villain of the story. I actually felt sympathetic towards him in the end. He was a complex villain, and that made his story fascinating.

The main flaw of this drama is the male lead's hairstyle (I really don't see why his hairstyle has to change with his profession). He could've had his good prosecutor hairstyle all throughout, and yet they had to screw that up. The drama also drags in the middle, but it picks up towards the end. Overall this was a good drama!

Loved it too! Why the 30 minutes format, though? A few dramas that would normally be the regular 16-episode arc or so, Lookout for example and more, are doing it. Could it be to keep a sense of fast pace?
PS: The hairstyle didn't bother much. I think I barely noticed... :D

I read that they have started doing that to dramas (breaking a 1hr episode into two 30 minute episodes), in order to be able to show more advertisements in the middle. I too like the old format better because, watching online, it feels a bit weird that we get each episode broken in half now.

Required fields are marked *

Apparently it is against the law in Korea to show advertisements during shows on over-the-air network stations. For some reason this does not apply to cable stations. (This is why when you are watching a TVN or JTBC drama they will randomly repeat a sentence here and there. Commercial break.) Anyway, with China getting into a snit about the whole THAAD thing and refusing to buy dramas, the broadcasters needed other ways to make money. So if they split each episode into 2 episodes, voila, they can show ads in the middle without breaking the law.

I didn't watch the original or rather forgot the little I had watched. So, I am not making any comparison at all.

I found it kind of slow, I was fast forwarding. In FOS, I was rewinding back because I can't miss anything. Every word or the tiniest of expression is significant. This one is very straightforward and predictable.

Perhaps if this drama was shown 5 years ago, I'd be more impressed. I've seen more intriguing cases and villains by now. I can't comment much on the characters because no one is interesting. Yet. I will probably give it another week or read recaps before deciding whether I should continue.

I was a fan of the original for years (dropped it at the end of season 7 because Prentiss was my fave and without her I lost the drive to keep up). The first 5.5 seasons of the show were as near tv perfection as it can get.

That said, so far I'm loving the Korean version. But I came into this with the mindset that kdrama tropes and quirks are very different from American tv and trying to apply the same rules to compare both shows would only lead to disappointment.

Look, I loved the US CM cast. Specially Thomas Gibson and Paget Brewster. I loved all the characters, except Reid who is my least favorite. Most of the complains I see are about Reid, so if you're a Reid fan, you'll probably have some problems too. So take this into account.

I love the Korean cast too. I'm a character type of fan. Give me a team to fall in love with and I'll stick with your show through thick and thin. And I'm already loving Korean CM team. Specially LJK and MCW's characters. Those two really clicked for me.

The action kept me glued to the screen but again, I'm only into it because I'm into the characters.

I wasn't too impressed by the first two episodes. The editing is off, the characters are so random and never emit the characteristics that make them the characters in the first place. The only character I liked was Team Leader Kang, or at least that's what I thought his name was.

I will try Kucowa later on once they figure out the app. I am already have Viki and DF. Therefore, I am ok as I have a full plate of kdramas and Chinese drama that I need to catch up except FOS. Next week, is my son birthday. He is going to be 9 years old. We already plan go to Vegas on August 6-9. However, we really don't know what to do on his real birthday. Lol My hubby and I will figure it out.

My younger sister's boyfriend is spending a night at our house next week. ?? As long, there is no clothes or underwear on the floor. He can spend one night just as long my younger sister go home. Oh, this is a hush hush from our parents. Hahahahah ahhh remind of me when I was dating my husband. (Lies of where was I all night and day time.?)

In another note, we are having a surprise birthday for my mom (August 7 is her birthday) on Saturday August 12. Well, let just say I wish my aunts and uncle and my stepdad should plan this more ahead of time. What is funny is we just celebrated my aunt's birthday in May. Now we are celebrating my mom. They are same age 60 years old. My cousin and I are 10 years difference. I am 40 years old and she is 30 years old.

In another note, I hope everyone have a great weekend and be safe no matter what. ☺️☺️

So I have the Dramafever Superstar plan which means I can watch stuff offline. I only ever use the Dramafever app though so what it allows you to do is download episodes of certain shows onto the app which you can watch offline when you have no wifi or mobile data connection. I haven't tried the offline watching on a browser but I'm not sure if that's even possible. It doesn't hurt to reach out to Dramafever and ask if that's possible.

Unfortunately not all dramafever shows are available for offline watching and it's also unreliable. Sometimes it just won't download eps or even play them when I'm offline :(

Yes, as ohhaeyoung commented, you need to have the *Superstar* subscription plan, which costs only a few dollars more than their regular plan. Even then, not all shows are available for offline viewing, and, more importantly, it can only be done through the app on a phone/tablet (or computers running Windows 10, I think). Otherwise, you're out of luck (unless you use Firefox and certain add-ons).

Just finished Circle. I really loved the show but I have a few questions unanswered at the end :
* how is it possible that the cube never been activated before by Woo Jin? Only his presence near the cube is necessary to activate it and we see in a flashback that Woo Jin spends a lot of time in his father's office so he must have activated it everytime he went there, didn't he?
So why he's surprised to discover the "power" of the star when he's with Jung Hyeon in 2017? And why he didn't remember that it was Byul who gave him the star? He seems to discover it through his saved memories (whereas he remembered perfectly the star he gave to Byul when she left) that's illogical!
Which gets me to my second question :
* who put the star containing the cube on the ceiling in the first place? Woo Jin's father? Byul? If so why didn't they destroy it when Woo Jin's father decided to stop his researches and Byul to erase her memory? And on what purpose the star was put there?
If it's Woo Jin who put it there, again, why didn't he remember doing so?

Those are all good questions. I think the system was set to work only after the dad's disappearance. It seems to me that up until then, the dad was working with Byul, and we've seen (do I remember this well?) Byul work on the computer as well. I think she was writing the program or something. I'm guessing that she (or the dad and she) put the camera on the ceiling too... I don't know if this makes sense.

Hi! I'm not sure to have much luck here. I totally fell in love with the energetic rendition of Asturias in WANTED. Don't k-drama usually make a playlist available to the fans, or at least the producers would let us know where to purchase the songs we like? I can't find that one anywhere, and I think the person who arranged it is a genius. Please help me find that music if you can. The original piece is on YouTube (it's super famous. Not pasting the link here, because I'm not sure I'm allowed to). Thank you for reading!

You're allowed to post links! The comment-bot is just pissy sometimes and puts them in moderation. But one of the human admins will get around to it soon and fish it out. :)

As a fan of Spencer Reid, I am iffy about the Korean version. He seems nothing like the book smart genius, seems totally out of character and acts like a normal arrogant human being without the quirks of a genius. In short, he sucks. I only have to watch him on the screen for a few minutes before switching it off.

Penelope is another character which the K version has not endeared herself to me.

Hello! I know its technically Saturday, I fell asleep reading the Criminal minds review, so im counting it. I really am excited for it and i got my mom whos a big criminal minds and my sister interested. I doubt my sister will watch more then one episode but at least thats something. But we are planning a get together to watch it, even chips and dip.
Im also really happy that netflix has a whole slew of Korean shows: gods quiz, gapdong, misang inclomplete life, etc. Right now im watching Take care of my fridge w the new name of Chef and my fridge. Its really interesting i want chefs to look through my fridge and pantry and cook for me. I know it staged or faked somewhat but i like cooking shows and this is an interesting concept.
I also watched a few episodes of My neighbor charles, NOT on netflix. I thought it was good very current cultrual social anthopology show if that makes sense.
Anyways i ve been in a dry spell for watching Korean shows, its been several months away, and im slowly going back to korean shows. I might have to rewatch gods quiz. I also plan to watch Okja but havent yet.
Good night, good morning beanies!
