[Staff Spotlight] Get to know LollyPip

Explain your username (and/or avatar).

I have two dachshunds, Lolly and Pippin, and I named myself after them, plus it’s a fun play on the word “lollipop.” Lolly is the Big Boss of the house, while Pip is the pretty, but kind of dumb, little sister. I write all of my recaps snuggled up in a recliner with Lolly beside me offering a running commentary, and Pippin curled up in my lap, propping up my keyboard.

What is the first drama that you watched (or the first drama that made an impression)?

My very first drama was Flower Boy Ramyun Shop, which really grabbed me with its wonderful characters and cute story. I thought Jung Il-woo was particularly fantastic so I looked for another show of his that I could watch, which happened to be 49 Days. His portrayal of the Scheduler ripped my heart out and ignited a love of K-dramas that hasn’t faded since!

Tell us about a job or two that you’ve had in the past.

I’ve done quite a lot of things, depending on where I was in my life at the time. I’ve been an actor (musical theater), a pastry chef, a dental assistant, and a dental office manager. In addition to writing for Dramabeans, I’m also a retail manager at a local garden center, which I love because it lets me indulge my passion for plants!

Have you ever lived a moment that you thought belonged in a drama?

Oh, most definitely. I was once dating a man who I thought was The One, and by everything he said, he thought so too. Then one day, without warning or explanation, I came home to find all of his things removed from my apartment, his phone number changed, and he refused to answer his door or talk to me. He forbade our mutual friends to tell me why he’d decided to disappear himself from my life, and to this day, almost fifteen years later, I have still never found out why. I can definitely understand why some drama characters spend years struggling to overcome a bad breakup.

What’s your favorite drama that you’ve recapped?

Well, it was Heart to Heart for two solid years, because I just loved the characters and their quirky love story so much. But it was recently supplanted by Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju, for reasons that will be glaringly obvious to anyone who saw the lovely little drama. The show was just note-perfect in every way—casting, tone, story, romance, it was all just amazingly well-balanced and so sweet it made my teeth ache. Recapping it hardly even felt like work. And the best part is, the OTP are now dating in real life!

What drama genres do you especially like?

My very favorite genre is rom-coms, I love a sweet, light romance. Friends-to-lovers is my very favorite rom-com trope. I also have a soft spot for fusion sageuks, especially if there’s a magical element to them. They can be so fun when done right!

What drama genres do you especially dislike?

I’m not a fan of police procedurals or mysteries. But even then, I’ll check a show out if the casting is particularly good. If the characters are interesting and the story moves at a quick pace, I can really enjoy a good whodunnit.

Is there a drama character you’ve ever strongly identified with, and why?

I very much identify with Hong-do from Heart to Heart, and Dok-mi from Flower Boy Next Door, for basically the same reasons. I’m a social introvert, so I can be social when it’s called for but then need a LOT of alone time to regenerate. I could very much see myself becoming a shut-in if the conditions were right!

What drama character would you want to be?

If I had to choose, I would pick someone like Oh Hae-young, or Choi Ae-ra from Fight My Way. They are fearless, intelligent, and they live without worrying what others think of them. When they want something (or someone) they go after it/him, because nobody every got what they wanted by being shy about it. Even when they’re wrong and they know it, they still do what they want because life is short. People may not always like them, but they always respect them, because they demand that respect.

What was your major in school?

In college I was a musical theater major, and have performed and worked with a number of famous names. But I realized that was a hard road if I wanted to do things like, you know, eat, so I left and went to chef school. I was a pastry chef until some health issues made it impossible, but I still love to cook and bake, and I do some local theater when I have the time.

What’s a random skill you have?

I have a few! I have a very green thumb and love to garden, my house and yard are filled with plants and I grow vegetables every summer. I particularly love orchids, and a cousin of the African violet called the streptocarpus. I also knit a lot—it gives my hands something to do while watching dramas. And I’m a big gamer; I love to play video games when I have the time.

Favorite non-Korean movie and/or TV show?

My favorite movie has to be The Dark Crystal. It’s such a gorgeous fantasy story, that really holds up even after all this time. I can’t wait to see the new prequel series! I don’t really have a favorite TV show, but I really love Netflix’s recent influx of original sci-fi/fantasy series like The OA and Stranger Things.

Which Hallyu celebrity would you actually want to meet and spend an hour with?

This answer would probably change if I were recapping different shows, but I’d love to meet Park Seo-joon. He’s a particular favorite of mine, and I feel very lucky to be recapping my fourth drama of his. He’s not only handsome, but he seems to be smart, thoughtful, and to really love acting. I think it would be amazing to sit with him for an hour and talk shop about acting. (If the question were about K-pop idols, my answer would be Xiumin/Kim Min-seok from EXO. He’s been my top K-pop bias for years, and I’d love to talk about music and dance with him.)

Which of the 7 deadly sins would be your undoing? (Pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath, or sloth.)

Oh, sloth, for sure. Most of my hobbies and interests involve sitting down, and I could easily spend the vast majority of my time in my comfy chair with Lolly and Pippin, doing a whole lot of nothing.

Your favorite drama has an unholy alliance with your most hated drama and produces a mutant baby drama. Describe the plot.

This is a hard question! My favorite drama is Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju because Bok-ju is the best, and my most hated is Boys Before Flowers because Jan-di is the actual worst. The plot would be about a bipolar girl named Jan-ju who goes to college to study sports rehab, because she’s bad at both athletics and medicine. She meets Joon-joon, a handsome athlete who’s on the national long-distance diving team. Joon-joon can’t seem to decide if he likes Jan-ju or not, so they spend four years dating, but only on Sundays and alternating Tuesdays and Thursdays. Eventually Joon-joon proposes to Jan-ju on the beach, but she throws sand in his face and leaves him for her awesome girl buddies who are way cooler than Joon-joon ever was, then she flounces off to America to follow her true dream of being a Vegas showgirl.

I love this! No wonder I've always felt like the dramas LollyPip watches are similar to mine. Weightlifting Fairy is one of my all-time fav dramas and my fav trope is rom-coms friends-to-lovers.

Same! Friends to lovers. And @lollypip, I absolutely love the way you recap episodes..its like watching your favourite drama with a bigger halo behind the screen. Oh I love gardening too. It's weird how much I agree with you, but my most hated (that's a small word) drama and characters all belong to Boys over Flowers. I could never see LMH or the actress in good light after that! Nice to know about you:)

I never really thought about my most hated drama cuz i suppose if i really dont like it, i would stop watching? but i did watch boys over flowers recently and found the Geum Jan Di character super annoying halfway through. but it was a classic so i thought i should finish it. but yeah i cant see Gu Hye Sun in a good light now. LMH is fine for me

Hi, @lollypip!! It's nice to know more about you. I never knew you are Xiumin's fan. *giggling to self*

I read lots of your recaps because I love good romcom, but sometimes (or most of the times, really) couldn't find the time to watch it all. You recaps helps a lot since I can just watch my favorite cut scenes after reading it. I also wish I can be a bit more like Choi Ae-ra, my newest girl crush, with her bold, fearless, intelligent, and loyal character.

Great to know more about you, LollyPip! Wow, you're so multi-talented! And I love how Flower Boy Ramyun Shop and 49 Days were your gateway dramas. *fist pumps*

I always look forward to reading your recaps, especially because you are so prompt ?? Also, I know whenever I'm in the mood for some lighter fare, and I'm not sure what to watch, I just find the show that you're recapping. You've become such a reliable go-to for me ? I know whatever drama you like, I'll like too!

On that note, I should go watch Heart to Heart then. Was contemplating watching it recently, hahah. I would watch your mutant baby drama. It sounds fun ?

(Btw just wondering... Can you share any tips on making a great almond dacquoise? I've been struggling to make one and all my attempts come out looking like a wrinkly old lady- the sides are too puffy, the middle sinks and is cracked, and it's so brittle I always end up cracking it when I handle it or try to cut it. I'd be most grateful! ❤️)

I wish I could but it's been 20 years since I worked in the business, and I barely remember any of it! I do basic baking at home but my kitchen is so tiny, I don't have room to attempt much more than very simple stuff. The only thing I can think of is possibly try lower temps and/or shorter cooking times...

2

I will try that! Now that you mention it shorter baking times or lower temperatures will probably help it not get too puffy and "crispy" too fast. Thank you! ❤️
I'll drop you a note when (and if!) I succeed.
I love chocolate and hazelnut and there is this hazelnut almond dacquoise cake recipe I've been dying to try, but not done because my previous attempts at dacquoise have been discouraging. http://www.finecooking.com/recipe/hazelnut-almond-dacquoise

So I looked for the french recipies of dacquoise , and I'm sure you can find plenty of it on youtube as well and this one looks fine: http://philippe-urraca.fr/comment-realiser-une-dacquoise/ (1. from egg whites with a pinch of salt make a "snow" , add sugar and whisk it for another 3 minutes until dense 2. mix icing sugar and almond & hazelnut powder and flour with a spoon in a bowl 3. with a spatula add mixture very softly to the egg white "meringue", do not over work it! 4. you can fill the pastry bag with the mixture and pipe it on a parchment paper or just scrape it with a spatula about 1cm thick and sprinkle it with icing sugar 5. bake it in pre-heated oven at 180 °C for about 10-12 minutes - it can't be too dry, because it's impossible to work with it afterwards - for a crusty touch leave it for few more minutes in the oven and you can work with it straight or freeze it.)
I myself love baking and while living in France for 6 -7 years I'm wondering if I'll go for the pastry chef formation or I'll remake my university degree in France...
to realise a good chocolate ganache - in a bowl over the steam (can't touch water) melt chocolate with 30% full fat cream until smooth

It is wonderful to get to know you a bit Lollypip especially finding out that we share passions toward music, theater, plants, and rom coms. Crinkles and Grumptopus in Sassy Go Go are still two of my favorite nicknames in all of Dramabeans' recaps!

She interrupted my laptop viewing to connect me to youtube. There's loads of tutorials there. though I told her i wasn't ready. Though i've been sounding her off to teach me for ages. The yarn and needles are still on my bedside. I guess there is a season for everything.

I can watch anything if the story is about friends who later falls in love, though i'd prefer it more if it were a kdrama cause it feels so real. That's why, 'Fight My Way' is currently my favourite.

I've been a fan of your writting since Witch's romance, and I am often amazed (and/or alarmed) at how many shows you are recapping simultaneously (and all by yourself at that! It must be so much work). When I see a promising show about to come out, I often think to myself "go grab it Lollypip, don't let anyone else take it!!!". Lollypip, your spotlight was the one I was most looking forward to because Witch's Romance was the very first drama that I watched "live" and it sparked a great love for Park Seo Joon and your recaps. Well that and an incurable need to call poor Yoon Hyun Min "Curly Soo" every time I see him in something.

You almost always are the recapper for the dramas I'm watching. And if I'm not watching one, your name alone is enough of a recommendation to try it out. Heart to Heart was one of those dramas that I might not have watched if not for your recaps. So thank you for always being a reliable bellwether!

You know, there should be a special question for Lollypip to ask her what's her secret for being able to recap so many dramas without rest. I'm thinking some secret elixir, a time turner, or she's a genetically modified mutant x with the power to not need sleep.

It's not that much of a secret - it's partially because I don't sleep much anyway, and partially because I work for Dramabeans exclusively 4 days a week, and my other job on the other 3 days. So on recapping days, that's all I do - I love it!

I have to admit, it's pretty cool that it's your job to watch dramas and recap them!!

And you're great at it! Thanks so much for your speedy recaps, they're so fun to read (especially the ones currently on Suspicious Partner!).

And every staff member featured so far is so multi-talented, I iz envious!

How did you happen to see FBRS as that first show? What were the chances this marriage of job and talent might never have happened? ?

Wow! What an amazing life! Thanks for sharing :)!

And hurrah for the Dark Crystal! It is also one of my favorite movies :).

Thanks for sharing, Lollypip. I was surprised to read that you're currently working as a retail manager-- I don't know how you manage to regularly turn out such prompt, well-written recaps, and sometimes up to 4/week-- that's mighty impressive! I love many of the same shows that you do and it's always such a pleasure to read your recaps.

I was also surprised to learn that you identify with Hong-do and Dok-mi because I had read about your musical theater background and had pictured you as a gregarious extrovert. Btw, what a nabbeun namja your ex is-- that's such a cruel thing to do! I hope your heart is (mostly) healed. I, too, try to take inspiration from my fave fearless k-drama heroines, and I'm still working on the lesson that what other people think of me is none of my business.

Your mutant-baby drama is jjang! Jan-di was the first k-drama character that made me want to throw my computer out the window.

I'll check out The Dark Crystal. Thanks for the rec.-- and thanks for being such a wonderful recapper!

That baby mutant drama is simply awesome. Is it bad that I actually want to watch it? ?
BOF is one of my least favorite dramas as well! I swore off kdramas for many months after I saw BOF!

It's so great to hear more about all our favorite recappers! I could say so many things, and honestly your recaps are some of my true favorites, but really the main thing is...when do we get to hang out and chat about PSJ? Because I can waste a looooot of time on that topic...*ahem*.

It's so great getting to know you better.

Wow, I can relate to many things. I'm studying patisserie at the moment. I don't really like being social either and I could easily become a recluse if I'm not careful. And friends to lovers are my favorite stories too.

Wow. 15 years. That's actually my most hated drama trope. Someone disappearing and then coming back years later hoping to get back together. Yours didn't come back so that's a relief. I wish you all the happiness, LollyPip! I love your recaps!

I'm not too surprised that we have somewhat similar interests and tastes. I really appreciate the staff here at DB, but you have recapped some of my favourite dramas like Shopping King Louis, WLFKBJ, Radiant Office, and Suspicious Partner--one of my current favourites. Apparently I now have to watch Flower Boy Ramen Shop :) . Thanks for all your hard work and I look forward to reading more of your recaps in the future!

BTW, what kind of games do you play?

Well before working for DB, I played a lot of WoW and was a pretty hardcore raider (druid heals). Now I mostly play on my PS4, I like RPGs and adventure games. Right now I'm all about Persona 5 and Horizon Zero Dawn. Oh and Final Fantasy, of course!

Yes to both! FFXII is my favorite, can't wait to play it again. HZD is great, Aloy is one of the best game heroines I've ever played. It's great how, the sassier you play her when talking to NPCs, the more they like her!

1

@lollypip FFXII is my favourite is well. I'm happy that the art style held up pretty well more than 10 years later!

Sounds like HZD has some cool interactions, kind of like Mass Effect or Dragon Age maybe?

0

@hades, yeah there are some fun storylines. There's one early on where Aloy helps a guy get rid of some bandits, then she decides he's kind of a jerk even if he was doing a good thing, and tells him so. She's hilariously sassy!

@LollyPip
I feel like I've been playing WOW my whole life lol.
Growing up around a lot of boys (cousins whom I called brothers) who also work at Blizzard means free games and access to beta.
Alpha beta and vanilla WOW was the best. I played a mage and back then mages were totally op and invis had no timer. The aoe and range had no limits so my friend and I would go to South Shore and just destroyed the Alliance and they didn't even see us coming.
That was kind of the Emain of Dark Age of Camelot. So much fun!
I'd love to hear your WOW stories.

What was your favorite Expansion? Mine was "Wrath of the Lich King."
I haven't been playing since Warlords of Draenor. I might pick it up on the next expansion.
Are you still playing? Do you play on normal servers or pvp? I love pvp but my friends don't so I have characters on both.

Anyway, I'm glad to run into another gamer :).

LollyPip, I also love the movie Dark Crystal! The sole reason I got into fantasy movies and fantasy novels when I was little was that movie. We have a lot in common besides that too, and it was a joy to read your interview! It was nice to get to know you.

I really love WFKBJ so much. I've recently just watched Goblin and it was very pretty to the eyes but I was not impressed with the story. Can anyboy please suggest dramas with the same genre/style but has a good story/writing? Please help a beanie out! T-T

Aw, yay! I was looking forward to this one. You seem to recap all the shows that I would want to tune into. And even if I don't end up watching the shows, I still read your recaps. Thanks for being so diligent and prompt in posting the recaps, they are usually ready by the time I wake up in the morning (Japan) so I get to read it on the train to work. Sounds like you have a sweet setup with DB and the Gardening! So awesome.
