all right, hi again, I am back from my not so long, but a very loooooooong trip. Route was Tallinn > Stockholm > Denmark (THE bridge and two ferries, short trip to Lolland had best coffee ever, do ride that ferry!) > then Germany on another ferry (lots of seafaring) > Lübeck (boats and marzipan!) > Hamburg (boat ride through the docks, very interesting, Elbe Filharmonie and bought steampunk shoes!) > Magdeburg (Hundertwasser and too many roses) > Wittenberg (why do the germans close all public toilets at 5pm? new form of torture?) > boat ride on the Elbe and Saxonian Switzerland rock formations (they dragged me there though I protested and I just ran over the bridges with my eyes closed, they inst´isted it was fun! excuse me????)> Dresden (sunset and sunrise views over the river are so pretty, and stumbled upon a street picnic, got a free meal) > Meissen (jeebus, I nearly froze in the shop part when a tiny trinket cost 560 euros and larger things over 12 000 euros I am so gladd I didnt drop anything, I was so terrified! The porcelain swan was 65 000 euros. I mean, jeebus. I never saw anything this expensive in my life. even a 2 cm pink-butted baboon cost 1000). Then Moritzburg castle, but very little time to explore and now for two days just riding a bus... to arrive home for a fully subbed Suspicious Partner.

I started counting during my trip how many drama-like moments I had. Running after a bus and breaking a heel - check. Sitting in a coffee shop and arguing - check. I also got water, err, beer thrown on me, but that was because the ferry started turning so damn suddenly. Someone walking in on my showering - they wanted to borrow foot oil. the glass was dimmed in the middle showing my shoulders and feet probably. I considered brooding after that, but our schedule was too tight. Getting hand-made chocolate for someone (a friend in another town) - check. Texting under the blanket - check. Elevator skinship- check.
I´ll have to try to remember the rest. I´m gonna have a sandwitch, havent had time to eat, only been washing the travel clothes all day.

okay, so more drama moments from the trip:
passing each other while leaving and entering elevators (but estonian eyes are wayyyyy too sharp to really miss out)
women carrying a whole truckload of heavy bags by themselves and men carrying single pot plants (shoul I say that one is a permanent condition for estonians?)
constantly watching out for possible perverts while wearing a mini dress (not that I am afraid of perverts but I am always up for a good fight. I´d like any excuse to smack them).

more to come. remembering bit by bit (I might have temporary selective amnesia?)

we had lots of fun with a waier on a ferry, he was so funny and he was serving 3 decks, running up and down and yelling at his mates for being slow and not doing anything. and he tried to speak to us in russian then when that didn´t work he tried chinese for some reason. he also attempted latte art, but he did it with a fork. LOL. observing some local work culture is always such an adventure.

more drama moments from the trip:

I washed someones´ sneakers and put them to dry on a little chair. I only remembered afterwords it is what lots of characters do.
there were lots of runners by the river (but no ghosts nor murderers.)
hands touching accidentally
and just something I regularly do - scare people half to death with uncombed hair, but it seems to be becoming a trend these days, so...
setting a wide spread at breakfast
stomach growling near a handsome person.
having someone pick up the oranges that dropped from a shopping bag. well, actually grapefruits. I guess drama characters are more careful with grapefruits, they only ever drop oranges.
truck of doom appeared too, but in the shape of some dumb f*** who cut in line in a traffic jam and we had to wait for a chance to turn off the highway for another 35 minutes. The road was actually full of trucks of doom. they were all trucks of doom, cause they all seemed to be in front of us and none behind.

okay i'm just so mad at suspicious partner right now so be warned. senseless ranting and spoilers. ??? everyone is being very reasonable in the comments on the recap and a lot of people are saying things that find helpful, thoughtful, and quite smart. but i'm just SO MAD AND I WANT TO RANT. why did it gave to be bang? why did a psychic predict he'd die? without the psychic i'd think he was injured. even then—why why why?!?! doesbtvthe writer know not to let me get TOO attached to a character who doesn't make it? literally my only hope right now is @sicarius comment about this ep clearly being filler. maybe a main char won't die in filler?!? omg i'm so mad y'all and ready to quit this show.

I don't really understand where the psychic storyline came from.

I admit the last few minutes of the show, I was ready to pull my hair out. But this element of fantasy/ supernatural abilities just seems so out of place.

I just think it's all around odd (and clever on the part of the writer) for this psychic to show up in 1 1/2 episodes and make such a big difference in the lives of the law firm team. Now the psychic is gone, and they are left with bits of fortelling the future which is extremely unsettling. And Bang, and the "do't cry too hard" comment, wow, it is a shake up for sure. I am so worried about Bong Hee, too. I want to believe taht her little scrape is over, but...I have a bad feeling. Why oh why do murderers stick around all the time and not flee?

1

Required fields are marked *

I find the psychic story unnecessary too but I tried watching it with a positive mind. Doesn't it also happens in real life that sometimes in our life we are influence by superstitions, believer or not? I remember my cousins laughing at me for re-posting scary but actually no sense stuffs in social media and if I don't do that someone will die. I don't really believe in such things but I still do re post it for precaution purposes, I mean there is no harm in being careful. I think the psychic factor in the last 2 episode serves the same meaning. JW doesn't believe in such things, he firmly believes in logic and things that actually make sense. But out of precautions, he can't just pass by it without considering its possibilities. It shows that even a logical person fails to be logical if the risk of losing someone you love is high. The loose murderer influenced JW a lot to actually believe on the foreseers prediction because its dangerous after all.

hi guys. i have a question. i know someone who is really stressed cos of work and i dont know how to help. it's easy when it's face-2-face cos i can just listen and be encouraging while sitting in silence.

but over text msges, i just dont know what to do. i say things like 'keep going' or 'you can do it' but after a while, saying such things just sounds lame and it might not really be very helpful. but not replying might make the person feel more alone. there are some things we just dont have control over but asking the person to just stop thinking about doesnt seem very validating because the worries/anxiety/fears are real. does anyone have any advice? thank you!!

people just need to get stuff out of their system so dont say anything and leave it be. or ask them: why are they dissatisfied? is there something that they can do to stop being dissatisfied? what is the reason they havent done it if it can be done, and can you help with some part of it? dont offer to solve their problems but just assistence.

i think this person is upset because he is being impacted by what other ppl do. (He cant really control their actions but knowing that makes him feel worse). I agree with you though. leaving it be is best. sometimes i wish we have these convos on the phone instead of text. it's so hard to convey an encouraging silence over text. haha. thanks for your advice, though :) i appreciate it.

I'm so sorry your friend is going through such emotions. Do you think you can call this person and talk over the phone, or use Skype? Earlier this year I had issues with work too and ended up with serious anxiety problems, and I found talking to friends/ relatives over Skype helped a lot. Or maybe just ask him/her more about the nature/ causes of the problems. Perhaps encouraging them to talk it all out would help a little bit. Generally I would ask my friends what specifically caused the problems they were facing, and focus a little bit more on details I've myself gone through where I can relate to them, to make them feel like there's also someone been there and that they're not completely alone. If it's something you can offer some advice on, the better, but I think just knowing that someone is there to share their difficult time would give them some comfort.

I had a friend going through hell a few years back. I was out of state and felt so bad because we're as close as sisters. What I learned to do is just ask, is this a conversation where you need to vent or do you want my advice? She would then tell me and sometimes it was vent and sometimes it was honest advice. She got through it but, honestly, it was rough. I've learned as I've gotten older though, we can't fix the problems of the world.

Also, and it may sound quaint but when I was going through a tough time, this same friend sent me a card. Yes, an old fashioned card through snail mail. Having something besides junk or a bill show up put a smile on my face. Sometimes it is the small things that makes a person not feel alone.

Also, I agree w/HyeMi...really hard via text because tone of voice means a lot in these situations.

1

Required fields are marked *

Seconding this! Check if your friend needs to be walked through her feelings and thoughts (i.e. just being given a listening ear) or needs actual suggestions and advice (a course of action).

In addition, it will be good for you to take a step back and keep tabs on how talking your friend through his problems is affecting your own mood and thoughts. It seems like his stress is going to continue for a while, because he can't radically change how he feels about the actions of other people that are causing him stress. So make sure that you're taking good care of your own mood and health, and that you're not becoming overwhelmed by his stress such that you may eventually be too tired out to help him as well.

thank you sorrynotsorry and PurpleTeapot for your advice!

@sorrynotsorry the card idea is great! i shall try it. and i think asking to clarifying is great too. i always assume that im supposed to say things to make the person feel better but this is a much better alternative. i've also been in a position where sometimes i just need to rant without any actual input from others.

@purpleteapot thanks for adding in the bit about self-care! i will be sure to keep that in mind :)

Required fields are marked *

If I were you, I would first of all take care of my own feelings. If he is stressed, I would definitely not be stressed. I have to take good care of myself, body and soul. Only then can I really take care of others.

As a person who had suffered from overthinking myself for a long long time,I remembered that the thing I want most from someone close to me is to be on my side no matter what. So I'm thinking that by texting 'I'm always on your side no matter what. You can talk to me whenever you want. If you don't, it's still ok and remember that I'm on your side.' would it help?

I'm not so sure about this but the art of relieving one's own stress and tendency to overthink is a gift or a lesson which should be learned. That's why many religious teachings focus on 'mindfulness' or living the moment.

Most of my friends live in different parts of the world so I totally get what you are saying. I find listening to them just rant their problems out helps a lot. Even if there is no solution to the problem just asking them questions, showing you are interested and not bored after listening to the same rant over and over, and just letting them talk about the problem helps to alleviate some of the stress. Try calling or skyping if you think they really need to talk. Through texts I let them text and make sure to text something encouraging to let them know you are still reading. Hope this helps!

Happy Friday everyone!
I've been enjoying reading the "Get to Know..." articles and the question about experiencing Kdrama moments in real life made me think about if I've had any Kdrama moments and I remembered that I (kind of?) had:
One time I was studying with a friend who liked me and all of a sudden, he got the hiccups completely out of the blue. I didn't think much of it until a few months later when I was watching "Good Doctor" and Joo Won's character started getting the hiccups around the girl he likes. Then I even saw it in other dramas too like Sungkyunkwan Scandal. Now every time I see this in a drama it reminds me of my friend and makes me smile.

Have you ever had a "Kdrama moment" in real life?

I tend to have more awful melo Kdrama events happen to me. I'll go ahead and share because it's been so long ago, but I was dating a guy for about 6 months. It was long distance for his job. We always face timed whenever I wanted, and he never seemed like he was hiding something or being sketchy about anything. He even visited me once very month and kept saying how he wanted me to come visit him as soon as I could get off of work. Imagine my surprise when I randomly get a text from his phone of, "who are you? This is his wife." Yes, the guy was married. And I felt like such a fool.

Another one would be when my high school sweetheart randomly called me after a year of not talking, wanting to meet up as he had something important to say. He ends up telling me that he broke up with his girlfriend because he kept having vivid dreams of me and him at our wedding. haha I have more but I think those are the most "drama" moments.

Happy Friday everyone! It's my first time on Open Thread *shy wave* I figured from earlier OTs that it's a bit like a "What I'm Watching" so... giving this a (spoiler-free) shot!

Fight My Way: I watched half of Ep7 but I read ahead for the recap so I saw what went down with Moobin. I love the main characters but I wish the writer did something better with the side characters, instead of making them so easy to hate and then toss aside. Maybe it's because I just came out of watching TLAHL and Bubblegum, where there were deeply flawed characters but no evil, jerkface ones, but there seems to be a giant split down the middle of FMW in which the good characters are lovely and complex, but the antagonists all flat and evil. Not a fan of that.

Weightlifting Fairy: Yes, I am so late to this! I'm a Ep6 and enjoying how Joonhyung and Bokjoo's relationship is developing slowly. The show isn't really keeping me on my toes, but it's more on me than the show, I have an uncanny ability to not binge-watch dramas. And all these side characters from tVn dramas I've watched keep popping up, it's amusing.

Reply 1988: Yes, I am late to this too. I can tell the Who's the Daddy is going to have a total cop-out ending because of the charms of a certain puppy-eyed actor, but I like the focus on family relationships and the friendship between the mums. I'm watching this with my mum actually, and it's the second drama I'm watching with her. The first was Goong/ Princess Hours, which happened to be our first Kdrama of all time.

Hero worship is strong in Fight for My Way. Hero side is from heaven and everyone else is dancing to the tunes of Desires. Rather than exploring Ae Ra's character, Writer takes another shortcut/easy step and makes moo-bin the villain. He was a scapegoat and thrown out of the bus. Only if Characters could sue their creators. I don't think even main characters have much to provide. At best all of them are cardboard cut characters with a shinny tag of being unemployed.

I haven't watched 1994, but one key difference between 1997 and 1988 is that 97 focused more on the "Who's the Daddy"/ the love story, but 1988 wove together the stories of the different generations, and each episode so far has been family-themed. I can't give a solid recommendation yet, but so far I'm really liking the sense of community that 1988 is bringing out (:

Welcome to your first OT!
For FMW, I keep waiting for HR to get fleshed out and will be really disappointed if we never learn her back story. Moo Bin was sufficiently complex for me since our story is concentrating on the plight of Korean youth who are fighting for success every step of the way. We saw his background since high school and had exposure to his thinking, friends etc. Hye Ran is still completely flat and without motivation as you say. Everyone seems content hating her but I'd still like to get her story.

Reply 1988 for me was about the neighborhood and the families. I think letting it become about one romance pretty much wastes the best parts of the show, so you and your Mom are on the right track in my book ? Isn't it delightful and heartwarming?

Those are three really fun kdramas to be watching at the same time! Isn't it nice to have a place to share comments and read up on, well, whatever OT threaders want to discuss! I haven't gone back and re-watched Weightlifting Fairy, but I am tempted! Oh, have you seen Strong Woman Do Bong Soon or Beautiful Gong Shim? <I love the main characters but I wish the writer did something better with the side characters, instead of making them so easy to hate and then toss aside

This is sort of why I dropped Fight My Way (or rather, I just didn't feel the urge to watch new episodes, so it just sort of fell of my watch list).

The lead characters are great, but the lack of creativity of the writers just bores me... as if they could come up with nothing other than love rivals for our leads to face their feelings. And of course the love rivals have to be hateful and pretty one-note. It's like there's nothing else in kdramaland the lead to catharsis.

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, I'm feeling quite unmotivated to catch up FMW too, I might keep up with Lollypip's recaps to see how the rest of the show goes before deciding whether to finish it.

The disparity between the leads and the love rivals had me wondering whether it could be a timeline problem. The promotional material didn't start dropping until really near the start date, and they pushed back the premiere, so it feels like the live-shoot/ production is cutting it very close. Maybe if the writer had more time, he or she wouldn't be falling back on character cliches for the rival figures.

I always want to talk about a lot of shows, I keep it in mind until OT, and then my brain reduced it & remain me only 10% of the memory when OT comes, like today. Anyone else like me?

1. I finished 38 Force Unit. A-MAZING.
I'm glad I watch this racing it crazy, 2days no sleep no food. This drama beats so fast, u think it will slow down near final? Nope, they race faster & faster, killin' it! I love SIG sexy sleeky con, but why my heart want to squish Papa Bear? He was so cute the whole show :^^

2. GAG CONCERT Boom Entertainment. I regret rewatchg this, I keep saying "Janna janna, channa.. the whole day haha.. Seogija KJunho is cutiepie.

3. BIG HITS
I fall harder than I thought....for Kim Min Jae. lol. His rap & dance are smokin hot. How old is he again? He is like YJG twins and his deep voice is similar with Song JoongKi

4. Anyone watched Awl? I want similar drama like Signal Tunnel, 38PU, Bad Guys. Anything else beanies can recommend?

5. is kimsohyun also enlisting? He only does one recent movie

6. I know Ruler is a mess, but I really want to pick this.. but.. I'm scared will wasting my time investing/rooting the wrong charc....

I make up for it by posting my thoughts on my fan wall (because it stays empty otherwise) once in a while. It does not matter if I am late there, it is all mine ;)

6.) I am skimming through ruler (because of a lack of time, not interest), and I enjoy it, but I am aware many have problems with it. We all have our guilty pleasures, I guess ;)

Oh yes that's also how I feel. I am on drama slump right now, because of how many dramas has failed me.
Now I prefer to watch dramas when they finished airing just so I can drop them without having to waste weeks in vain.

Most K dramas could benefit from a smaller number of episodes, 10-12 could would shoud give a tighter drama.

CT2017 - My Kiwis are out of tournament. Supported England and they lost too.

Circle is a 12 episode drama but it already feels like dragging the plot. You get the entertainment you want but story doesn't moves forward as much as it tries to portray. 2nd part is quite weak compared to 1st one.
Fight For My Way - Fairy Godmother. Bought apartment block + gym area + reprimanded the mall owner + paid hospital fees + acting like cupid. sigh. Cliche scenes galore.

Watched Kissing Cousin movie 2 weeks ago - A boring movie which pokes your heart in a few moments.
Planning to watch Thirst movie of Kim Ok-Bin and its trailer
surprised me with those explicit scenes.

School's been less hectic these days so time to catch up with kdrama!

Suspicious Partners - Is it weird that I always feel super excited whenever waiting for the next ep, but find myself skip scenes and fast-forward it when I actually watch it? Also, still find it hard to believe that it's from I Remember You's writer.

Secret Forest - FINALLY!! Sub is available and I legit scream in excitement once Bae Donna appears in my screen. I like how it went so far, all character seem intriguing especiall Jo Seung Woo. Gosh that charisma and screen presence <3

I think I'll be waiting for Lookout and Circle to end then marathon them though. And I kinda want to see Best Hit just for watching Donggu in 90s outfit.

In music - Anyone is fan of Jung Joon Young? He will be touring all over Europe in September!!! This is such an amazing news, especially since he even picks cities that usually are invisible for korean showcase. I long accept the fact that Amsterdam is probably invisible forever for him, but at least there is Paris. Oh well. Anyone?

I don´t skip scenes in Suspicious Partner but I am not as invested with neck and skin as I was with IRY. the latter really had a psychotic and eerie feel and the brokenness of the characters felt more raw and bleeding. the chemistry of the cast worked more in the direction of suspense but in SP it is more of a comedic chemistry. but I do love SP especially the office squad and I am so not ok with removing one from the equasion. it will never work the same way if they let him die.

Just finished Man to Man and overall liked it. I know this is from the co-writer of DOTS and I think he/she did a good job fleshing out the characters and providing an overall fun spy caper with an understated romance......but, let's face it, I wanted more more more of our three leads together in the 2nd half. Don't give me Do Ha, Oppa and Brother and then not put them together. Oh well. I had an overall fun time with it, it is just I never felt any urgency with the results of the spy stuff...the world wasn't coming to an end. Basically generic Korean corruption blah blah blah seen it before. But a writer who can create such characters is one to watch for. One of my favorite scenes was the one where Do Ha was losing confidence and is told to turn around (I'll leave it there). I loved that.

Do Ha seemed so wacky in the early episodes but ended up being a grounded character, and I like that she wasn't a woebegone martyr to family issues but had a more resigned love for her father which I saw as more realistic and less makjang as normally seen. I also like that she wasn't over-the-top sassy/spunky as some dramas tend to do. Not a show for anyone more focused on romance but a solid watch. Sorry to leave it all here but missed all the conversations because I came so late to the party.

Lastly, I don't know how Park Hae Jin can move one facial muscle and still get everything across perfectly. He's never been a bias of mine, but I've always realized he was a good actor and realize here he can also do comedy quite well.

Your last paragraph is also similar to what I think about Park Hae Jin. I am currently on episode 4 and his funny emoting and Oppa's silly antics are what keep me going.

Romance is quite meh though, I can't sense any chemistry between the female lead with any of the men. Kim Min Jung is not a bad actress but for some reason she irritates me so much that I consider dropping the show.

Happy friday everyone! Does anyone know what drama the screencap is from? Hehe

I am so excited for the next Best Hit episode to come out tonight! Which means by the time I wake up tomorrow morning, there should be a subbed version available hehe. Despite my lack of Korean entertainment industry knowledge, I am digging this drama. Everyone is super funny to watch xD but I have a soft spot for the interactions between Hyun-jae and Woo-seung. I wonder if that bank check is still valid 20 years later?? Hahahah. Also looking forward to more rapping from Ji-hoon. A cheesy two thumbs up for this drama!

I'm on a sudden drama hiatus. Reason? Super Junior. I'm a 39 year old currently fangirling over SuJu. I can't believe I've only discovered them now. There was a time when I said kpop is weird, I'm not into that at all. Boy, am I eating my words now. I'm now busy catching up with 12 years worth of music, concerts, awards and bromance. Any ELFs here?

Suju was the first boy group that introduced me to k-pop, I still remember when I was fangirling over Kyu and Sung Min's bromance. I was an ELF and a Sparkyu until about 3-4 years ago, I think it was when the members were starting their military service. I lost interest in k-pop because it's quite tiring to keep up with latest boy/girl group, in my eyes they are all just the same now..

I was never an ELF, but I've been a Kpop fan for a decade and I pretty much listen to everything I come across. My favourite Suju album is their Sorry Sorry one from 2009. I wasn't extremely fond of Sorry Sorry, but it did catapult them to greater heights, and the side Bs off that album were great. Welcome to the rabbit hole of Kpop, but don't fall too deep! It comes with a lot of drama and messiness.

I never thought I would enjoy Wonder Woman. Half of the time, I was in awe of her body. I kept thinking "I want that body! I want those legs! The face too! Everything!" Pity they had to use so many CGIs that were subpar.

I have a question concerning uploading of gifs on fan wall. Does DB accept gifs from giphy only? Also, why is it that I can upload some YT on giphy and not others? I don't think it's the size. Other than youtube, it seems like giphy doesn't accept other urls, does it? I have also been unable to upload SBS and KBS channel drama short clips to UT. The only one I can is MBC's.

Hi Everyone! ....... I hope you are all doing well today!

Quick question: Is anyone here watching Thief-nom, Thief-nim? ..... I'm not watching this but I'm curious if anyone else is and what they think of it because I haven't heard or read a single thing about it. ..... Then again, the fact that I haven't heard a single thing should perhaps tell me something. ...... Anyway, just wondering.

Watched this week:

Whisper - One more episode left to watch!

Fight My Way - Ae-ra's remark that often a life full of experiences is not reflected on one's resume, was oh so true.

Suspicious Partner - That a cheater ex-girlfriend can approach her ex-boyfriend and think that they can pick up where they left off, is astounding.

Seven Day Queen - We know it's headed towards tragedy, but one can't look away from this show.  Certainly exceeding expectations.

That's all for now. ....... Everyone take care and have a great Friday!

Happy Friday Beanies!

Real life has been... insane. It's interfering with my drama life and I can feel myself getting crabby- it's like hangry but drama related. Drangry?

Between my grandma falling down and breaking her ankle (she is fine now, had surgery, but grumpy like mad) plus school holidays (the Boy being around and wanting Mommy Mommy Mommy!) and the Husband really busy at work... my drama watching has dwindled to pathetic levels. Barely managed to squeeze in 2 episodes of Circle.

I want to watch Seven Day Queen and finish Secret Love Affair but at this rate I'm never going to get the chance. Maybe I'm better off watching a k movie. Less investment!

Oh yes and Father's Day is this Sunday. I haven't the foggiest what I'm going to do yet. Oh dear. Suggestions anyone? Lol. I think I'll just cook something...

Hope everyone is having a better drama week than me.

On a viewing note, loving Fight My Way, MSG and Seven Day Queen. I've never liked Joo Won before (ouch! stop throwing things!) and find him to be an absolute ball of hot in MSG. And everything tells me that Yeonsangun is a maniac who needs to be deposed posthaste but Lee Dong Gun is so compelling in SDQ that I want him to stick around and, I guess, keep making Korea suffer ?

There are so many things to extol about Suspicious Partner and Fight My Way that I'm losing track. On the other hand, not too sure I'll be missing Man to Man that much.

Suspicious Partner first. Whoever is in charge of wardrobe for this show is awesome. The lead cast looks so well put together most of the time, especially the guys. I want some of those suits and shirts! Fashion aside, JCW continues to impress. If he keeps this up, I'll be counting down the days till he gets done with his military service. The writing is pretty solid and the actors deliver the material well. If I had one complaint at this time it would be that the editing seems a bit off at times when they go from scene to scene. By that I mean, some scenes don't transition as well to each other so it can feel a bit jarring and incongruous.

Ah, Fight My Way. You're really giving Suspicious Partner a run for their money. I think the use of the childhood flashbacks are apropos to the current day storyline. Understanding our OTP's history helps make the relationship more believable. I also appreciate how the show is able to blindside you with one or two things--like ep 8's ending--especially when you have decent hunches about other things--like Moo-bin, although admittedly not to the extent I thought. BTW, Park Seo-joon is super fit. ?

Man to Man, argh. Just argh. I mean, this show ebbed and flowed so much that I'm surprised I didn't get tired of it. I think the love story was the weakest link, and that brought down everything. I think if they hard foregone that storyline, or made it more Bond-esque, they could have focused on making the baddies and espionage better. I loved Park Hae-jin in this though, and Park Sung-Woong. Looking forward to what they do in the future.

wardrobe of Suspicious Partner - some really expensive brands as it turns out but my guess about fair trade ecological and natural was mostly correct. Still like the texture of the fabrics Ji Wooks shirts and suits are made of, have you noticed how they have kind of a coarse structure and look almost hand-woven? Some of Bong Hee´s dresses are the same.

Happy Friday, Beanies! Hwang Chi Yeul released his mini album "Be Ordinary" on 13 June (his first mini album after his debut album way back in 2007). He acted in the MV for the title track "A Daily Song". Many of his fans reckon the MV is like a mini K-drama, and we (being biased naturally) feel that HCY could, if he so wishes, try his hand at acting in a K-drama one day (in a supporting role, of course) Here's the MV (9 minute long! song starts from 03:37) - clicking on it will be much appreciated.

If you're a girl, it's important to wear a
formal skirt/pants. I would suggest a blazer with a buttoned up white shirt, as it gives off professionalism, and wear dress shoes!!! Sooo important. When you get to the interview, you may have to wait. Don't browse the internet on your phone!!! Look interested, and try to talk to customers, or maybe fix things in the office. Sometimes, interviewers have cameras and such and are actually observing you as you wait. Make sure to do research on the company before you go!!! They want to know you care and are interested in the job. And if they ask if you have any questions, have a question prepared! Once again, its a way of showing interest! If you have to sit in the waiting room, as a female keep legs closed and the hand on the knee, if you are a guy everything I said here still stands except hands on lap, no skirt just pants, wear a necktie, and stand up straight. This is all stuff I learned from a family friend of mine who worked in the corporate field for yeaaaars. Good luck and be confident!

5

Required fields are marked *

I agree with all of this but I will say in regards to what to wear I think it also depends on where you're being interviewed and what you're interviewing for. When I interview for children's librar* positions I like to wear something colorful and fun--but still neat and professional to show that I'm a hoot and they SHOULD want me on their team. I don't know if that's what I'm actually projecting but I FEEL confident in what I'm wearing and that's important. GOOD LUCK!!

Hi everyone! This is a bit weird for me because I'm not normally someone who uses the open threads. I came today because I wanted to ask for some advice (I know! I'm shameless!) My birthday is coming up at the end of the month, and because I love kdramas so much, I'm holding a kdrama themed birthday party! Even though I'm turning 21 (my family is judging me hardcore but I don't care! I didn't want to go to a bar and be social plus drinking doesn't appeal to me) Thankfully, all of my friends also watch kdramas, so we can all participate! I have some ideas on some events/games to do during the party so far, but I wanted to know if anyone here knew of good drama quizzes that are fun for groups, or kdrama games? Here are some of the things I thought of:
- Have everyone write down their top 5 favs and least fav dramas and using the worst and the best drama writing a synopsis for a mutant drama of top fav and top least fav (yes I got the idea from the dramabeans interview, I hope you don't mind O' dramabeans authors in the interwebs!)
- play name that drama where we read aloud well known scenes from dramas and have people guess what they are (the winner can have one of my lee min ho posters)
- play name that drama ost where we play a sound bit from an ost and the winner gets a poster (I have a tonnnn of lee min ho posters)
- play Is That Drama Fake or Real? There will be a bunch of fake drama scenarios and real drama scenarios and everyone has to guess if it's real or fake

That's all I really have for now! I'm also planning on making foods I've seen people eat in dramas and since I have a backyard and a tent, I want to make it look like those soju tents (I don't think that's what they're called eep) you see in dramas all the time! We're planning on binge watching Circle together since it will be finished by the time my birthday comes around, but if anyone knows of a shorter show we can maybe binge watch together, if you could please make some suggestions, I would really appreciate it! Also I just want to mention a fun thing I'm doing as well: I asked everyone to tell me who their favorite actor is in dramaland, and I'm going to put that actor's face on the back of the individual's chair so everyone can sit with oppa! (Haha) So please let me know if you have any suggestions, or if you think some ideas should be cut, I really want to make sure the party is organized but fun! Have a great week everyone and happy drama-watching!!!

Oh my!!! This will be one hell of an awesome birthday!!! Let us know how it goes. Happy birthday!!!

For drama recommendations, Age of Youth is the one I can think of as it revolves around a group of girls. That show also had one of the best party scenes in recent memories.

The other good option is The Liar and His Lover. It has romance, but it also revolves around a group of friends.

Oh, Shorter shows. Age of Youth still qualifies. The Liar, no.

My only Love Song is now available on Netflix. I heard that's short. I've not seen it, but it'l seems cute.

OMG this is the cutest/coolest idea ever!!
I had a KDrama themed party as well for my (I think) 27th birthday, but it was far from being this elaborate!
All your ideas seem pretty nice, and I'll also recommend playing along with DB's anniversary game...they posted the questions/pictures/music along with the answers so maybe you could use that!
Also, it's only 2 episodes, but Splish Splash could be a wonderful addition to your party!

Very fun! For the "fake not fake" you could play clips of the real scenarios after people guess! Of course, you'll have to eat ramyeon and kimbap and mandu (dumplings) with chopsticks! Oh, and face masks at the end to relax?

This sounds like so much fun! I hope you have awesome birthday--it sounds like you will with such fun people around you!
Hmm...I tried to force my community to love Kdramas and Kpop by hosting 3 kdrama themed programs at the library and they were not successful--boo. But, I had a HOOT planning the programs. I did all of the things that you have listed up there. If y'all are into Kpop you can always have some karaoke time--there roughly a kajillion songs on youtube that have hangul (sorry for spelling/or flat out using the wrong word) and playing some of the games that we see them playing in dramas. One I think is called the chicken game? Maybe? Where you stand with one foot pressed to the side of your knee and your arms are behind you and you have to push someone else out of the circle?

This just blew my mind! It's fantastic! I'm jealous you have friends that are into kdrama, and enough to have a huge blowout party like this. My guess is that 3-4 games will be plenty esp if you're trying to fit in watching a drama as well, along with regular socializing and drama gossiping. I also support watching Splish Splash Love because it's adorable and it's so short everyone can see the whole thing. Plus being fun and very party-amenable. It would be a drag to get partway into a show and have people losing interest, leaving or maybe even falling asleep! Then again, I hang out with lots older (ahem!) folks than 21 year olds ???. Awww, now I want a kdrama party! Have a blast turning 21 and be sure to tell us ALL about it ?

Completely random... i was happily thinking that the pink and blue stars at the end of Fight for My Way signify love meetings between AE and DM... then realized the stars match the episode counts. :(

Don't worry. I've read an article in Soompi saying that someone had seen what you said. The person thought that the pink stars show the feeling of Ae Ra and the blue ones that of Dong Man. I believe this is the case and since the starts also signify the number of episodes passed as well, we can very well assume that all stars will be completed at the end of the show and both Dong Man and Ae Ra should be completely in love with one another. I am not so sure about this but this is how the article read. You can very well check it out so don't be sad anymore. ;)

Depends on what you like.

Suspicious Partner is my personal favorite of the ones you listed. It's a delightful romcom with some underlying suspense.

Circle is very well done, and is almost through its run, so you'd be able to marathon if you wanted. It is new and different with the way it is split into 2 timelines, and it is fascinating how they weave together.

The Best Hit is silly fun with timeslip shenanigans.

I'm not watching Lookout, but I hear good things.

Long story short, you probably won't be disappointed with any of these shows. Just pick the one you think fits your mood of the moment. And if I am wrong, and you are disappointed, you can always drop and choose something else. :-)

Returned from my Italy trip - It was absolutely AMAZING! Such a romantic country. I liked Cinque Terre, Rome, Venice and Florence in this order. I took a gazillion photos and can't wait to produce a photobook!

Watched Tunnel and Defendant during the trip. Liked both. Just started Mystery Queen.

Open Thread, week 19. I’m late this week, and wearing another hat as a medical school clinical instructor, which takes more time out of watching dramas. I love summers here, and being outside trumps drama-watching as well, which is why November-February are my prime drama-watching months, so I may not be on open thread much more the rest of the summer. I’m sure I’ll have more stories to share in the winter though!

I only watched Circle this week, and only so that I could participate in the recaps. It is blowing my mind, which I love. The suspense is killing me, though. Where are you Woo-Jin???

We did start My Only Love Song and saw one 30 minute episode. I was kind of turned off by all her yelling and prissy behavior in the first episode, but thankfully, I got some good eye candy towards the end, and will definitely finish this when time permits.

Next weekend is our next Freethekimchi.com meeting and Goblin, episode 4 is on the docket, which I discovered one of our members HAD to watch after episode 3, so we may be also doing episode 5 for her! It’s a lesson in discipline for our members, since we’re only watching one episode a month. Could any of you Beanies do such a thing?

So, how did this eclectic little meeting start, you’re wondering?

It started in February, while my hubby and I were watching Goblin—you might want to review that Open Thread around Valentine’s day. We had a dinner party (a very “adulting” thing to do) and everyone brought over cabernets (which I don’t prefer, but drank it anyway—they were amazing wines, btw).

*Around the dinner table, imagine 4 couples, with about 6 bottles of wine in us, including ourselves, a lawyer and insurance agent, a food scientist and banker, a mortgage broker and I still don’t know what his girlfriend does besides being a feminist and running a foundation (Claire Underwood, anyone?)*

Hubby: My wife is obsessed with this show right now, which is why the music is playing in the background.

Me: You’re obsessed too!

Hubby: We are playing this tally-game to see if the main actor would rather be in a romance with her or a bro-mance with me.

*Prior to this, my hubby and the mortgage broker was away from the table and we all were joking how metrosexual they both are, engaging in their own bromantic moment, apparently. They walked in as we were having this conversation and all of us just totally lost it.*

Me: Hubby is winning so far, we all know I’m just cool by association.

Insurance agent (Kimmie on my blog): I’d go with a romance with you any day, hands down, sis!

Me: Awe, you know, hubby is the better cook, and funnier in all regards. I could totally seduce someone if I wanted to, though.

Hubby: I was totally bamboozeled! *As he says this his arm flies towards a glass of red wine, knocking it over, breaking it and shards of glass come hurtling towards me, not to mention the wine. As everyone looks, aghast, I’m wondering if this dark...

2
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

...red fluid dripping from my arm is blood or wine, and everyone else is still staring in disbelief.*

Me: Don’t everyone get up at once, but I think I’m fine! And furthermore, I totally won! I don’t think Gong Yoo would appreciate having glass thrown at him and red wine stains on his clothing, no matter how cool you are, honey!

Hubby: Sorry, I’ll clean it up.

Banker (Amy from my blog): Now, I totally need to see who this person is, and the show you’re watching…

Moral of the story: Another way to get friends to watch k-dramas: Have a real-life k-drama moment.

2nd Moral: Vinegar and baking soda really works to get out red wine stains—and bleach too, if all else fails.

3rd Moral: Hope this was worth the wait today!

Catching Up: Dr. Who, Handmaid's Tale
Returning: Orphan Black (Clone Club!)
Studying: European Data Privacy Laws
Status: Bored to Tears.

Ahhh I love Orphan Black! Do you have a favorite clone? I can't bring myself to start Duel yet because of it. One clone show at a time.

And I feel you on the unemployment -- I'm scraping by myself right now as underemployed and doing what I can when I can. It sucks. Even dramas can't fill that void entirely.

1
12
reply

Required fields are marked *

My favorite clone is Helena. We don't see her nearly enough, but she's always gold. Of the three main clones, my fav is Alison mostly because she and Donny are the best suburban crime duo ever.

I am so utterly bored it's not even funny. Today, I am going to buy myself lunch and then sit down and toss more resumes into the scrap heap. Otherwise know as "Same ol', same ol'."

1

Required fields are marked *

I love Helena too! Though I think my fave is Krystal. She's just so absurd, and was literally created because of a bit that Tatiana Maslany used to do between scenes. I love Allison as well, especially after Donnie came into his own as a character in the second season. I also just love the combo of Donnie and Helena together, especially now that she's pregnant.

I swear, sometimes sending off resumes is like screaming into the void. I never know what to expect. I took up watercolor when I was totally unemployed a few months ago just to do something different. Luckily I had all the supplies left over from high school. It was actually really calming, but I was also dealing with a lot of anxiety, so I needed anything to focus my mind.

I write from time to time to clear my head. Since I work in tech, I write SF about all the ways tech could go sideways on us. It lets me exorcise demons.

1

Writing is a good way to exorcise demons for sure. You must be loving Circle then, what with the memory tech and everything. How do you find Duel so far? I'm debating picking it up when Circle ends. I love that there are more hard sci-fi options in dramas this year, since I tend to think of summer as my sci-fi watching time.

I also love reading sci-fi but haven't got the tech background to consider writing it. I was liberal arts all the way. If I weren't a pragmatic person I'd probably have considered the visual arts too, but that would never have flown with my family. Still didn't help with the employment situation in the end.

0

I am enjoying #Circle. Best part is that it's outsmarting me. I don't know if it's because I'm missing intel in translation or if it's just really well written, but all of my guesses have been wrong except the painting and the worm/chip.

I colored up a creative writing english major with a law degree, so I too was pragmatic as all hell. :)

1

Ha, I'm similar degree-wise (English Lit with a minor in Philosophy, then Law School).

I just love how tightly plotted Circle is. It's clearly got an endgame in mind, and the structure works so well with the storytelling. I've also given up on theories since mine have been blown out of the water as well. My only major one that still seems to stand has to do with Woo-jin's role in the future, but the reveal of the chairman this week seems to have debunked it.

1

Agree re: Circle. I still don't think Byul is an alien, but I'm running out of ideas to explain why not. :) My new theory is Woojin is dead. It's a theory you can't come back from.

1

I think she is an alien, or if not that, then some sort of genetically engineered person (or mutant a la X-Men), but only because of the not-aging thing. (Is it weird that I really want her to be an alien?)

My Woo-jin theory was (is?) that he masterminded the new world, even if he doesn't/didn't run it. He is clever enough and from the start he's had a lot of darkness in him.

0

I actually agree with you re: woojin and was sure he was the chairman (plot twist: he'd somehow not aged because he figured out what made byul not age) but now I have no idea. Bravo show for messing with my theories.

Are you watching anything else?

1

I'm also watching Fight My Way, Suspicious Partner, The Best Hit and a TW-Drama called The Perfect Match. I want to try Duel, Lookout, and Forest of Secrets but gonna wait until Circle is over to start something else.

Non-drama is mostly news (UGH so stressful - but Rachel Maddow keeps me sane) and trying to keep up with iZombie and Orphan Black. And Veep, because Veep is perfection.

1

I watched the first season of Veep a few years back. Kinda feels like that's what we elected now, doesn't it? That kind of incompetence. Politics makes me angry these days and I voted for myself in the last election. Sheesh.

Try Lookout. I'm really enjoying that one.

FMW is really cute and cracks me up, but the camera is driving me nuts. SP is SO Cliche but cute.

1

I'm pretty sure the combo of SP and FMY is what keeps me sane these days. Totally agree re: the camera in FMW though. It needs to stop. This is the first drama cycle since the year started that I haven't dropped stuff or been ambivalent towards the offerings. I was just starting to move on to Japanese dramas and was watching more Taiwanese ones because I was so underwhelmed. But this cycle has been good.

Lookout is where I'm leaning for after Circle ends. I'm actually trying to watch the Thai version of Full House this weekend because I want to just watch something sweet and silly and it got recc'd to me vehemently in another post. So far it's cute, and seems to be less irritating than the original, plus eps are shorter. But I also have a pile of books I want to read/start this weekend, so we'll see if I actually watch or not.

1

1. Stressing out about the employment situation. Feeling like I don't know what I am doing. Sometimes, this whole thing about adulting hits you really hard.
2. Crazy news, crazy news everyday. How do we get out of this cycle of news?
3. Wondering what goes on in real life for actors and idols. Many Korean dramas are so unrealistic, I wonder how they feel living in these projects.
4. I like Joo Won a lot and I miss him! What a talent.
5. So curious about the Cheese in The Trap movie <3. Fun fact: both OYS and PKW are friends with Joo Won :P (I know, I will stop talking about JW now).
6. I watched Dear Heaven again some day ago and even though it was long, I cried so much. That plot was special.
7. Hope everyone has some relaxing time this weekend. Smile! You deserve it.

Always so attached to the 101 series cause it really shows the desperation of the trainees and in the end you just want everyone to succeed (some more than others though! hehe)

My favourites were Sung-woo, Tae-hyun (super sad he was eliminated at the last round), Jae-hwan, Daniel, Jong-hyun, Ji-Sung and Samuel!

So, I'm living in this weird bubble were I am 100% sure I'm going to flunk out of graduate school. Why do I need to know about technology anyway? Why is collection development so DAG NAB BORING?! And 100% positive that I'm going to graduate in August and its manifesting itself in lets procrastinate EVERYTHING. I'll NEVER sleep again! I'll use those hours to do homework except NOPE not ever! Its making my head hurt and want to lay under my bed and watch dramas. And, I keep spending the money I'm supposed to use to survive on if I don't find an actual factual job before I move in August. I so need someone else to come along and make my life choices for me because my adult level this week: negative 720. Like, I almost bought a Barbie on Tuesday because it reminded me of easier days. And she had funky glasses.

In Drama related news: I'm binging Sweet 18. This show is all the feels. But, now I have a question. It briefly flitted through my mind when I watched the first two episodes of The Best Hit, but, I'll ask today: how often do people actually fall and land on someone elses lips? And DOES IT NOT HURT?! How come no one ever accidentally bites a lip, or chips a tooth? Thats a whole human (in most cases) person who's face and subsequent body is getting flung right on your lips. Other than dramaland (its a drama, obvi) answers---I need some answers. Just. I need answers. Maybe I shall get them by accidentally on purpose falling on the cute (not-homeless) guy who frequents my library sometimes.

As much as I'm dying to hear what happens after you fling yourself onto the cute (not-homeless) guy, the chances of the result being dental expenses and long-lingering facial bruises, and possibly a restraining order, urge me to caution against it (sigh. So boring). Oh those dang dramas! Another way in which they are just.not.realistic. I think the first kiss like that I saw was when Party No 1 fell off a school wall onto the mouth of Party No 2, at least a six-foot drop, and as you say ... nary a mark was seen but two blushes! LOLOL thanks for the crackup and reminder of this drama standby ?

isa, seriously my heart hurts for where you find yourself vis-a-vis those big decisions. Who wouldn't be having anxiety? Lookout has been nicely paced so far, but since this drama is still airing, we can't be so sure what will happen in second half.

My drama-watching has simmered down; I'm flailing around for new shows, while my US shows are picking back up.

Fight My Way: Told you Moo-bin was a creep. :dances the dance of Told You So: I'm kind of 'meh' on the latest episode, especially since Joo-Man is not stepping it up, but my son is freaking glued to the show. My 16 year old is the most soft-hearted romantic teenager I've ever seen. He's very invested in Ae-ra/Dong-man.

The Best Hit: I don't know why I'm so hooked on this show. It's weird and not much is happening, but I can't stop watching.

I tried the first ep or so of Lookout, but so far it's not catching me. I watched the first ep of Thief-nom, Thief-nim, and...eh. I'm having a bit of trouble parsing out what the deal is with the ancestor. I haven't tried watching Circle yet, but it looks good - and Duel is finally up on Dramafever, so I'll probably try that.

On the US side, Dark Matter is back (Science Fiction show about memory & identity, chosen family & loyalties. It's awesome.), and Killjoys (about space bounty hunters with lots of best-friend-forever action & snarky dialog).

Lots of Library action this week! Once "Korean Made Simple" was processed, there were five (5) holds on it! And we just got in the first book from "Talk to Me in Korean" (along with the workbook); it should be on the shelf next week.

My coworker watched "Chief Kim" & has been raving about it all week; it has a bunch of holds, too. I turned the coworker on to "Coffee Prince". Heh.

On Monday, I got a beautiful note from a patron thanking me for putting aside all the Korean shows for her. :) So validating.

Travelers

I haven't watched it yet - is it good? This is why I prefer online watching, because I can never remember what channel/day new shows are on!

Have you watched Legion yet? OMG, so good. More fantasy than SF, but it was AMAZING.

sorry for the late reply, i hope you still see it :)
legion is on my watchlist aswell, see i was fully intending to catch up on scifi/fantasy series but travelers happened, it's really good, it's only 8 episodes long and i binged it in an evening (panda eyes at 3 am), the first episode is a bit confusing, i started watching and couldn't stop :) good thing it was a short season, i can highly recommend it!

Hi! I'll be going to Stockholm at the end of August for the first time! I'll be there for an academic conference but I would also like to do touristy things! Would you be able to recommend anything?

Wow. What an exhausting week. It's almost the end of the year so both children and teachers are just done. I only find comfort in watching Seven Day Queen. It's not relaxing but it feeds all my drama cravings. But now I have to wait again until Wednesday and I'm still under a pile of preschool scrapbooks that I need to get done. Help!

I'd been going through the recaps deciding which series to buy this month and came up with a few options - 2 of which have just turned up in a mass upload to UK Netflix. Misaeng here I come!

enjoy misaeng! it's a very heavy series though,so have tissues nearby if you have overactive tearducts like mine :), it remains one of my favourites, it's such a good slice-of-life series but it's one of those you would have a hard time rewatching , enjoy!

At this point it's become a ritual for me to eat anytime I watch Korean dramas. I don't know what it is about the way the food is presented or just the way it's eaten, but k-dramas make everything look so delicious?? Ramyun (being the most easy to find) is my staple drama diet now. But I'm also trying out different Korean recepies! There's something so satisfying about knowing the taste of kimbump or Teokbokki!

Added onto my growing lost of things to eat and try out are these rice cakes I saw in the mini drama Exo Next Door. I'm not sure what they are called (subs say rice cakes) but they are soft, round, and so colourful and look super delicious! I havn' t been able to get it out of my mind. Seriously if anyone knows what they are called or have any kind of recepies for how to make them I would really appreciate it if you could let me know!

It's chapssaltteok! (I literally googled "Exo Next Door Rice Cakes" XD) "Chapssal" is glutinous rice, and you can find recipes for different flavours on Maangchi's food website here, or just Google "chapssaltteok recipes".

Nothing quite as satisfying as a patron seeking me out to declare that she just finished "Master's Sun" and she NEEDS more Korean drama right now. She left with three sets and the url for Viki. Heh.
