Beanie level: Eunuch in drag

Has anyone (US viewers esp) heard of KoCoWa or started using it yet? http://variety.com/2017/digital/news/korean-streaming-service-kocowa-us-1202502916/ Thoughts?

This is so funny you mentioned this. I was just discussing this on my fan wall. Kocowa sucks. But thankfully they partnered up with Viki so you can get Kocowa content now through Viki and can bypass Kocowa altogether. See my post et al for details: http://www.dramabeans.com/members/umbrellaman/?page=fan_wall

A Viki Pass Plus is the same as what I currently pay for Netflix. I find that morally bankrupt. Sure you can try to justify it in saying you have to pay your subbers etc. but that’s a pretty big hike for access to content from three ‘additional’ TV stations. Not even Crunchyroll screws me over that bad. This is what pisses me off about when you try to do things the legal way and they try to take advantage of you.

    1
    1

You know, I was so excited yesterday when I found out that I could pay more to Viki for Kocowa shows. Yay! I don’t have to deal with Kocowa’s crappy player anymore. Yay! I no longer have to countenance paying an exhorbitant amount for said crappy player if I don’t want to be limited to watching a show within 24 hours of its airing. Yay! I still have to pay more, but not nearly as much as I was expecting. Yay!

And then I got to thinking. I wonder if the whole thing was intentional. What if it wasn’t a poorly planned, hasty rollout of Kocowa like I had assumed. Maybe they meant to be super crappy so that I would be excited rather than pissed about Viki upping their prices. You know, like spreading layoff rumors before announcing a wage freeze.

Hahaha! Now that’s vile and completely possible.

help! where are beanies in the US watching Falsify or Criminal Minds? I can’t find either on viki or dramafever (am I missing something?)?

Falsify is on Kocowa, but it’s called Distorted. Won’t be on the others.
I can’t find Criminal Minds either; with Dramafever’s agreement with TVN that’s where it should be but it’s not 🙁

thank you to everyone who recommended Beautiful Gong Shim. it is A-DORABLE! loved it so much. it is a bit slow at times but otherwise a super cute, light, laugh-out-loud rom com that’s low on angst 💕

Does Chief Kim have a romantic plot line , or is it more just a workplace/slice of life drama? 😀

things in my life are a bit challenging right now—anyone want to suggest a feel-good, pick-me-up drama? i don’t mind watching one i’ve seen before 💕

High-end crush, I had some good laughs with this one and it’s quick to watch.
Or Weightlifting fairy Kim Bok Joo ?

I second Weightlifting Fairy. LSK herself said that it’s a “healing drama”. 😊 I hope all will be well soon. Fighting, chingu 👍

That show makes me feel better when I’m not even down 😛 xoxo Thanks for the support, guys! Beanies are the best <3

@crysta — thanks for this list!! Some of my favorites are on there. <3 @azzo1 @minacci I think I'm going to go with Chief Kim after all. I didn't see it when it aired, but I remember seeing various beanies comment and thinking it sounded fun. And as much as I love watching the old favorites, tuning into something totally new is even better. thank you guys so much — for the recs and the kind words. I just love beanies so much <3

also there is crime and suspense and INCREDIBLY good writing (some of the best i’ve seen in a drama). the acting and the characters are NEXT LEVEL. i mean, he is smiling with only his eyes in that gif.

im pretty much over all the angst in SP.

I was so proud of Ji-wook fighting his initial response to be a noble idiot, but then Bong-hee has to go and be one. *sigh*

so many of you whom i appreciate and respect have gotten downvotes (for reasons NONE OF US can grasp)—and i know it seems disheartening—but im also starting to consider the downvote as a sort of…

Same! I was like—my opinion is important enough to disagree with? And not just as a muttering under your breath in front of your computer screen? You’re really gonna click the downvote and think (I’m assuming, here) suck it, isa, you wrong!

Put a little spring in my step.

here’s my idea for a drama: hallyu star/idol stumbles across a drama-recap site that is literally the most supportive group of fans ever… (contd below)

8
8

he gets himself an account, befriends these lovely people, becomes one of them. when scandal/tragedy strikes and his image looks like its going to collapse, this group gets him through it. iamong these new friends, he finds his OTP, a band of friends he can banter/bicker/debate with, and several mentors who help him become a better actor and person. eventually his fame skyrockets, but he maintains his presence on the site, active with these awesome people who supported him always.

    4
    1

Cast it! Who’s writing it? Who’s directing? I’d watch it.

      3
      1

i need help with this—but so far i’m thinking Kim Eun-sook for the writer—i knows she’s top of the line, but i love her dialogue and the way she develops multiple characters in depth. I feel like this show will have a lot of fun characters that need flushing out. Lead could be…Park Hyun-sik or maybe Park Bo-gum?

        3
        2

Oh I love that man. And he can handle complex characters and fluffballs. Good choice! Who should his otp be? If you go noona I’d say Lee Bo Young. If you’re going same age I’d Nam ji hyun

          1
          1

oooo both good choices. i was thinking also along the lines of gong hyo-jin or park min young (my absolute faves).

            0
            0

i’d like some of the side characters in the blog community to include: Kim Mi-kyung, Park Ji-young, and Do Ji-won—-heh im already over budget :p

          0
          2

What about a hardworking candy girl who comes to the blog community as her one respite from the world to post about her biases?

            1
            0

yes to candy. i like that idea quite a lot.

    OMG, YES! Meow. RAWR.

    2
    1

I was like, “Omg, that means that if they were both sober, something could’ve gone down. Omomo.” I mean, they were already at the “Oops, We Did It” (lol, that name) motel, so there’s that.

      1
      1

heheheh yes! and he was just SO SERIOUS about it. another glimpse of DM as a man a grownup not just a fun guy buddy. i feel we didnt really see that until the last ep, where he finds AR after the fight and is so earnest+tender with her, and we see it again here–where he’s obviously aware of what he could do and would like to do, but he also seems to realize that if he moves too “suddenly” she’ll “scatter”; that he needs to wade in, carefully, if he wants to AR to acknowledge her own feelings. i just love it. i love that he has this side to him and PSJ does such a good job portraying that.

        3
        2

Yes, I’m totally loving how Dong-man’s being all sorts of cute and swoony with Ae-ra–especially in these past couple of eps. Ae-ra did ask if they were having a “some” kind of relationship (which, I thought was really cute that she did notice that something was different about them and brought it up, rather than pretending she didn’t feel the change), so I liked that Dong-man kinda answered her question in the last ep by telling her that they should stop taking detours and date officially. You see, what I also thought about his “Alcohol saved you yesterday” statement was that if they were gonna do something together, he’d like for both of them to be alert, aware, and most importantly, sober, so that they were both on the same page and knew what was going on. They may tease each other and give each other a hard time sometimes, but there’s no doubt these two respect each other and wouldn’t do anything to hurt the other.

          4
          1

yes. I think you are spot on. I took “Alcohol saved you” to mean the same thing. That even though HE knew what HE wanted, he wasn’t going to push himself (physically or emotionally) on her when she wasn’t totally sober and conscious and agreeable. Their respect for each other really shines through in this show—and also the fact that they are both great people. I mean, he is a genuinely good guy for having that standard.

            4
            0

          Yes! Exactly! 👌🏼👍🏼👏🏼

These two are great individuals–they’re genuinely good people, they’re fun, they respect others (and themselves!), and more, so they’ll become even stronger together. 💪🏼

it took me a while to actually process what that meant. But when it sunk in I was like ” Give a tissue! I need to wipe away the invisible tears.”
He’s such a gentleman. And in the recaps (don’t remember which one), they mentioned that Dong Man is actually really smart and sensible when it comes to Ae Ra. That scene confirmed the theory. Me Is Happy!

I loved this scene! And where she wiped her nose on his sleeve. Bahaha!

I’m not currently watching this drama but last week I also asked if anyone was watching this. A fellow Beanie was kind enough to respond that she had watched the first episode. She described it as slow-moving and makjang.

Other than this, I haven’t heard anything else about it.

aww yeah!! i wasnt mad about the fakeout, but i think that could be because i figured thats how things would play out. plus i loovvved the flashbacks and the cuteness elsewhere. as you said “then the rest of the episode happened.” 😍

Princess’s Man. I don’t watch a lot of epic romances so I am running out of ideas. The Best Love, Jealousy Incarnate, and Oh My Ghostess had really good OTP chemistry but are rom coms.

Does Princess’s Man have a tragic ending? I’ve heard it was such a good show, but I thought I also heard it has a sad ending, so I’ve avoided it.

thanks for recommending Another Oh Hae Young! I had heard good things, but it never really seemed like something I’d like–but I gave it a try AND LOVED IT. the otp chemistry is sooo great—and so are all the secondary characters!

      1
      1

It IS great!!! My catnip is OTP chemistry. And the supporting cast is also amazing. Everyone has a place in the drama and adds so much to the story!

    1
    1

Goong, Coffee prince are classics! And super hot chemistry!
Secret Garden is another one. So is The King 2 Hearts.

I watched Goblin for the Bromance and the humor…..I didn’t buy the OTP at all. For me everything else in the drama worked except for the OTP and their story. Compared tot he rest of story and where they were going, the one of opt fell short. But definitely give it a try…the bromance is so strong that it makes up for everything this drama is not and more!!!

Another Oh Hae Young is on another level, give it a try if you haven’t already!!

    1
    2

thanks for the insight on goblin. very helpful. as to your other recs: i’ve seen (and lovelovelove) some of those, but not “another oh hae young”– i like that actress a lot after “romantic doctor teacher kim” so i’ll definitely put it on my list! thank you 😁

      1
      0

just watched another oh hae young, thanks to you and ally (above). LOVED IT!! the OTP chemistry and the side characters were all so excellent. thanks so much for the recommendation 😀

      1
      1

I guess I disagree about Goblin. I liked the OTPs there. There are actually two OTPs, Goblin and Eun Tak, Reaper and Sunny. Some people preferred the latter, others the former. For me, both were grand, sweeping, loves that span multiple lifetimes. Still my favorite drama ever because of how well everything from the acting, music, cinematography, and writing just melded into a masterpiece. I was just so taken to another dimension when watching it. I still find myself rewatching the scenes with Goblin and Eun Tak now because their love was so sweet. Sure, it may not be the blood boiling passion of some OTPs, but it’s still love–quiet and supportive. Try it, I don’t think you’ll regret it.

        0
        1

thanks for this explanation! i’ve heard so many good thing about goblin—it seems like it’s one for the books! but i’m kinda creeped out by the premise—angel of death, creepy curse, goblin, etc. i’m totally sure i’m missing out but i’m super wary too. idk.

          0
          1

It’s not creepy at all! Just all the feels! And Goblin in Korean culture is not the same as western. Think of them as more like a leprechaun. And grim reaper doesn’t actually kill anyone, he’s just the messenger, guiding people to the afterlife. Ahh, he’s so beautiful too!

            1

You should definitely watch Marriage not Dating (if you haven’t seen it)
