OT week 17! A great storm was happening in Northern Italy last night, and I'm a sucker for stormy weather--as long as no tornados come out of them. We have been staying in this turn of the 20th century humongous farmhouse which felt very "Flowers in the Attic" when we first arrived, but now is just charming, an d rattles with every clap of thunder. I'm going to miss this, but ready to be back in the USA.
I started Moonlight Drawn by Clouds and am loving it so far. Second lead plays a strong game here, doesn't he? Also, caught the first part (Beta project) of episode 3 of Circle. If you are not watching this, you are missing out. Internet has been spotty, so will catch the rest when we get back to the states. Husband has been watching Mozart in the Jungle (Amazon Prime Video content) which I've already seen all three seasons, and we've been discussing these.
Husband: Since the daughter is playing in this orchestra here in Italy, I've been getting my classical music listening skills sharpened by watching Mozart in the Jungle.
Me: That has a cute little romance built into it with the conductor and the oboist.
Husband: She doesn't stay with the dancer in the first season? He's a really good guy, and good looking.
Me: Hence why she doesn't stay with him. He has second lead written all over his character. Better looking than first lead, considerate of the girl, kind of a push over.
Husband: I'm the one that told you this last week after TLAHL! Second lead is much better than the first, couldn't get over how the first lead looked 12 y/o. The guy from WLKBJ should have played the first lead. Or the brother from that same show, or anyone else, actually.
Me: Too bad you're not watching Moonlight with me, first lead is much more compelling than the second and Park Bo Gum is adorable with a capital A-D-O-R-able.
Husband:* speaking to daughter* That's your mom's way of saying that if Bo Gum was walking across the street, you'd have a new dad.
Me: And if Rachel McAdams were walking next to him, you'd have a new mom.
*Daughter looking at us incredulously.*
Husband: It's a little known marriage clause. But have no fear, hon, Rachel probably will never make it to our street. No one would find us unless they were looking for us.
Me: It still doesn't make it any less true that Park Bo Gun is ADORABLE!!!
Daughter: Oh, is that the drama you've been watching, mom? With the girl who pretends to be a boy? He's the prince, right? He IS cute!
Me: *Winking at husband while mouthing, "I told you so!"*
Moral of the story: I'm going to have another kdrama-watching buddy yet!
2nd Moral: As cute as Bo Gum is, he's not replacing Gong Yoo in my marriage clause.
3rf Moral: USA, here we come!

I try not to say "goals" in conversations, but you and your husband and the way you guys talk and watch shows together is definitely my "marriage goals." Haha. Lol @ your husband thinking Lee Hyun-woo looks like a 12-year-old! Ouch. Does he know he's actually older than the second lead by four years? Ha. Also, just realized they're both so young, omg. Also also, your daughter is a drama fan in the making! I can just ~feel~ it!

No, we have no idea about ages of actors, for the most part. Asians look so much younger than they actually are by European/American standards and since we've both lived our lives in the states, pretty much everyone in dramas looks younger than they are. But LHW looks especially young to him.

stormy in Estonia too, especially on the sea, my finnish group was late 3 hours. But they were stalled by other storms in a can on the way, too.
it is freezing here. absolutely freezing, we are wearing winter hats and gloves. even 20 degrees would seem like Africa right now.

I’m back at OT, finally! :D
Done with exams, so I’ve got the entire summer in front of me and surprise! I’m gonna spend it watching lots and lots o’ dramas hehe. Obviously among other things, but since both mind and body is completely exhausted from exams, I’ll be lounging in bed marathoning dramas at least the entire weekend and then quite possibly the rest of the week. And maybe the rest of the vacation. But that would just be kind of sad lol.
So on that note – what should I watch first?
I have lots to catch up on and can’t really decide. I finished the latest eps of ManxMan, Suspicious Partner and My Secret Romance (just ep 13 of that left now!).
The ones on the top of my to-watch list for this summer:
2017 shows currently airing:
- Lookout
- Fight My Way
- Airing this weekend: Duel and Best Hit
New-ish, but completed shows yet to watch:
- Chicago Typewriter
- Defendant
- Tunnel (should I give it another try? Or is there a lot of talk about serial killer’s MO and stuff? If I can just look away, I’m fine, but serial killer shows tend to be hard to look away from, because the descriptions of their MO etc plays a part in the plot)
Old shows:
- Awl
- Ghost
- History of the Salaryman
- Liar Game
- Let’s Eat
- My Lawyer, Mr. Jo
- My Wife’s Having an Affair This Week
- Nine Times Time Travel (but I didn’t like W and QIHM, so I’m hesitant lol)
Halfway but don’t know if I can finish:
- Six Flying Dragons (because it’s a serious sageuk, it’s awesome though)
- Mystery Queen (at ep 5 and still find it really boring. Does it get any better?)
What do you think is the best ones to start with? I think I'll catch up on Lookout next and perhaps Fight My Way, but otherwise I'm not really sure.

Lounging in bed marathoning dramas through out a whole vacation sounds heavenly ? lucky you!! Hope you have a great time! ?
In terms of dramas, I would recommend you start watching Chicago Typewriter. It's a really good show and I'm absolutely loving it! But have to warn you that it's kind of a slow burn show, the first few eps are a bit slow. But it really picks up later on ?
I'm loving Lookout so far. And Fight my way too. Both are good so far ?

I highly recommend Fight My Way - it's my new crack! The chemistry between the leads is so good, it's been awhile since OTP thrills me like this. It's also a good romcom all around, it's light but realistic, it's funny but not slapstick, it's romance without being over the top.

Tunnel is must watch darl, is a very very groundbreaking show for me, i put it teeth to teeth to signal . Is very odd that 2shows can be so similiar, yet is very different. Genius.
Mystery Queen is cute scobby doo gang, and very Japanese dorama vibe. I like it tho.
History of Salaryman & 6 Flying Dragon is very interesting not all dramas can be these. Grab it while it serve..
I read ur checklist, sounds ur kinda drama ae similiar with mine.
I do want to check Awl & Liar game.

I wasn't as big a fan of Signal as everyone else, but that was mostly due to Lee Jehoon's acting and the weird pressed image of the past-scenes. It's not darker or more graphic than Signal? If not then I could probably handle it :)
For some reason the humor just isn't striking a chord with me in Mystery Queen, but I've gotten this far, so now I kind of really want to finish it lol.
I've only heard great things about HoS and I did really like what I've senn of SFD, so I'll, hopefully get around to it this summer :D
I think Awl and Liar Game sounds amazing! And they're so short, so it'd be possible to one-day marathon them haha :b

Signal is darker, give u an empty feeling for the after effect shock. It goosebumping me every time.
While watching Signal, it paints a dark mellow nuance the entire series. It gives u a thought of not so happy ending promise for the detective trio. Is a sad great heroic show.
While watching Tunnel, give me a hope, like a lit of little candle each step, and I believe they all will end the marathon in winning happily.
For the graphic, am not really sure. Bcs it depends on people standard. Maybe signal is more harsh.

That's quite the list you got there. You're lucky that you've finished all your exams and now have time to watch more shows. My tests did not even start yet. As for series to start, personally, I would recommend Tunnel or Chicago Typewriter for current-ish shows. For older shows, Liar Game is a must watch. Also, I think 7 Day Queen is pretty good right now, that is if you like saeguks.

Liar Game is so high up the list it's ridiculous. Yet somehow I always end up watching something else? Soon though! I WILL WATCH IT! SOON!
I figured Defandent would be really intense, so I'm on the fence about starting it, but when I get some of my energy back I might get to it heh. Summer is the best time for shows like that, because then there's the sun and ice cream and stuffs to bring you back to a sunnier reality ;)

Since everyone recommended different shows, I will voice my opinion on two shows that's on your list but didn't get mentioned a lot.
I just finished watching the first 2 episodes(30 minute each) of the Best Hit and I am reluctant to say if I like it or not. I get The Producers vibe from this show. This might be because a lot of the actors(such as Cindy's manager and Kim Tae Ho PD) from the Producers made a short appearance here. For now, the show doesn't seem too cohesive, but I will stick with it a bit longer. I did like The Producers after all despite having mixed feelings about it.
Nine: Nine Times Time Travel is unlike other time-slip shows. I have watched W, QIHM, Tunnel and Tomorrow with you. Nine is a lot more serious, but not grave in the way of the Signal. In Nine, the idea of time travel and consequences of it is dealt in a more profound way. I think the idea of time travel is best executed in here. So I would definitely recommend you to give it a try.
My current crack drama is Fight My Way!

Thanks!
I loved Producers (despite the latter half being a bit too predictable and cliche), so that sounds good to me heh. Not being chosive enough seems to be going around lately. SP is at least also suffering from it lol.
I tend to stay away from time travel in dramas, because the logic fails become so apparent (unlike in movies where everything happens so fast). It's so highly recommended though, that I can't help but have hope ^^

Going through a little bit of turmoil in life these days - nothing too bad but a lot of uncertainty and stress. So dramas and Dramabeans have been such a great help in putting my mind at peace.
Waiting eagerly for the Chicago Typewriter finale, after which I know I'm going to cry buckets for sure. ? On one side I don't want it to end because I like it so much and also because I know the ending is going to be sad (Yoo ?) But at the same time I'm sooo curious to know what happens in the 1930s! Talk about emotional turmoil!
Started Fight my way last week but couldn't catch up this week's eps. It's a breezy watch, so I thought I'll take my time ?
Really loving Lookout. I can see plot holes here and there, but I'm okay to look over them. Love all the actors and how the story is developing.
And totally looking forward to The Best Hit this weekend! I need a dose of Yoon Shi Yoon in my life so badly! ?

Hi Beanies !
I'm going to Germany this Sunday (studying there for a month) and I'm not sure if there will be Wi-Fi in my accommodation. I don't want to be away from my precious dramas and from the site's new features T__T
Last Saturday, there was the first edition of the Japan Experience where I live. It's a mini convention about mangas, animes, video games and cosplay. The best part was the cosplayers and the dance cover group who covered both Jpop and Kpop songs. For a first edition, there were a lot of problem with the organization but it lets people space to improve the next edition :)
This week's premieres is giving me mixed feelings. I love sageuk and the bloodier they are, the happier I am (I'm not crazy, I swear !). Seven Day Queen succeeded in grabbing my attention with the King Yeonsangun. I just love him and his twisted thinking. I'm glad to see him after Rebel and Lee Dong Gun's Yeonsangun is horrifying captivating. I'm so ready for angst !
I can't say the same for My Sassy Girl. The slapstick humor is really not working for me and these scenes last too long. The shortest gags are the best imo. I loved the movie and if it's going in the same direction, I will stick for a few episodes.
The Best Hit is making me really curious. A time-tr avel comedy with an idol from the 90s ? I'm in !
I anticipate The Duel's premiere the most. More mystery please.
Father is Strange : I'm really curious how the one-year marriage internship will turn out for Hye Young and Jung Hwan. I want Father to tell the truth to Jung Hee because I don't want to see him hurt more after trying to bond with him. Min Ha (Uncle's son) is intelligent and mature for his age as seen in previous episodes and is ready to sacrifice his possibility to enter Science High school. He should talk with his parents because Aunt will try her best to earn money to send him to Science High school while Uncle is already doing bad financially with his part-time jobs. Knowing Uncle, he will not be more motivated to find a full-time job, he will spend his time pitying himself. Joon Young is slowing his Uncle steps and there is a big difference. Yu Ju is not like Aunt, she is career driven and is not as supportive as her. Btw I hated the employees' behavior at work and the shift of manager was a dirty move. After what happened at work, I understand her reaction when Joon Young tried to console her. His sweet words don't work against realistic problems. The honeymoon phase is ending and now their real marriage is beginning. Ra Young and Chul Soo are now dating. Cute.
Happy Friday :D

Yes, but it could explain as well that marriage is not always turned out as we expected, which in reality it is. She is going to learn valuable experiences. I do think the contract and internship are something refreshing especially in the modern world we are living, nothing can guarantee everything. Someone can love us dearly today, but next month he/she could cheated on us. The contract as a commitment for both parties to do the best for their marriage - i love this idea.
Min Ha is a very good kid. His parents must be proud to have him as his son.

I am also curious about the one year marriage internship. It's just so Hye Young to come up with such a scheme as a compromise. However, no matter how thoroughly thought out her contract is, I suspect it won't be as easy.
It's really sweet how JH tries to bond with Papa Byun. Contrast that with the elder brother's whining about how neglected he feels because of Papa Byun but does nothing to rectify the situation. However, I agree that JH would be more hurt if he learns the truth about his birth later rather than sooner. Papa Byun should tell him the truth before JH is in too deep into the relationship. And I really like the relationship between JH and MY to start, like right now. I can imagine the hijinks that would occur between them. It would be too hilarious!

The only 2 reasons i havent :
-Is the show pace slow?

They should cast like Heirs tiger vs lion, LMH x KWB both got the star power, it just the writer are too sucks in their gaze forgot how to write a drama.

Yeon Woo Jin in my opinion is better actor than Lee Dong Gun and in fact better than Lee Min Ho & Kim Woo Bin as well.. He may not very charismatic and no star power, but once you connect with his subtle expressions and emotions, you will be totally invested. His character in Introvert Boss & Arang enough to convince me.
Lee Dong Gun is playing a tyrant King, so that's why he appears to be more charismatic. He needs to. Anyway, If I have a reason to fully watch this drama, YWJ is the main reason.

I think both of them are fit with each other role - one is tyrant King, the other one is incompetent. Maybe understsanding about each character can help you to see why they casted these two actors in their own respective role.

Like @seralovestteobokki said LDG has to be charismatic because of his character. YWJ is a more a subtle actor imo and we will get to see him soon.
It's still too early to know if the space is slow because we are still in the childhood part.

Today, my friends and Iwere so stress with crazy and fussy clients ? So we ordered pizza and many other side dishes to release out stress after working hours, and I suggested My Sassy Girl (actually it was randomn choice lol) to my friends to release our stress. Surprisingly, they laughed so hard ? Maybe because they are not so regular to kdrama, so they're having lots of fun with all the crazy acts by the heroine lol. Now they asked me to update them for every new epi. ? I was quite surprised with their reaction. Last month, I suggested My Girl to them and and they enjoyed it. I tried to suggest Goblin but they're not very interested with the past lives etc. In short, I still cannot make them fangirling any actor but at least I managed to convince them to watch kdrama ? My friends mostly are too committed with works and not into kdrama. I tried to suggest Suspicious Partner as well but they refused to watch because of legal drama, and they had enough of legal stuffs already ? Now i am convincing them to start Fight My Way. I hope it will be a success lol.

The 100 point survey recently had me thinking about how China's sanctions on Kdrama have not only sent Park Hae Jin back to Korea's small screen, but also may have finally turned Korea's eyes Westward in search of a focus market.
If Korea has set its sights on a Western audience, what platform would be best for them to market to? I came into Kdrama through Hulu. Others have come into it through Netflix. And that's great for catching an audience. But the offerings are limited. I think the offerings being limited are the single biggest detriment to every legal streaming site.
I like Viki's format best, among all the legal streaming sites. I like the flexibility of subtitles. Is it just me, or does it have a larger number of non-English subtitles? Is has also started its “learn Korean” mode, but even before that you could switch the subs to Korean to practice your Hangul reading. I find it more user friendly than DramaFever. I'm surprised sometimes though at the shows that aren't streamed on Viki. This week alone, not licensed in my region are My Secret Romance, Circle, Lookout, Ruler Master of the Mask, Man to Man, Bad Thief Good Thief, Radiant Office. These aren't even offered: Golden Pouch, Love is Drop by Drop. If it's not on the licensed list, does it usually make it there in time? Is there a way the Powers That Be in Korea could expedite the licensing?
DramaFever seems to have more, but somehow I find their layout offputting. Hulu doesn't even let you browse anymore without having an account, which prompts me to look for alternatives, because how can I sign up for something if I don't know how much it offers.
The way to cut down on illegal sites, I think, would be to aggressively license dramas early in their season so that the alternatives aren't as appealing, and to widen the scope of dramas licensed. I don't think selling the license to a single distributor is a sustainable option (like Nightlight on...Netflix, was it?)
Any thoughts on how Korea should market to the Western audience?

As a follow up to marketing to a Western audience (does anyone else notice the experimental turn of some of the most recent dramas—Mystery Queen set up for a Season 2 (whether it comes to be or not is another questions), lower romance elements and more action in Circle, Man to Man's higher action, more like a Bond theme...it has a more Western feel than Korean feel to me. Maybe also influenced by Chinese action dramas (Park Hae Jin is home from the Chinese scene now, after all)? Strong Woman probably wasn't meant to imitate Western ways, but it was kind of cartoony in a flawed way. My Secret Romance also thought the audience didn't need rising plot tension or a satisfying character arch. I know some people were satisfied with just the pretty, but so much more could have been done with that one. Making the kid the real son of the OTP, and spending a few episodes of angst on whether or not the he loved her or just wanted to claim his kid—having both of them work through that—alone would have vastly improved the plot.
I just want to say that if Kdrama tries to imitate Western drama, I'll probably lose interest. I don't want excess violence and shock value, overly sexualized romance themes, slice of life or multi season dramas without rising plot tension, slapstick or cartoonish caricatures. I can get all that domestically (and one of the reasons I don't watch American TV is because I don't like being shocked or mindlessly led: I want to be entertained and enlightened). One of my peeves about Kdrama though is when porn is almost product placed, as in High School King of Savvy, where she says he's just a high schooler, so it's normal/acceptable for him to look at porn, or Healer, where he's awarded with a locker of videos of a certain nature for his efforts in martial training. It raises my Human Rights and feminist hackles any time this kind of comment is made, and makes me have an anti-crush on the up until then actor who was doing so well at winning my loyalty. But. If you're going to treat my sisters like that, then you are out! (Girls before flower boys!!)
What I think Korea does well, and shouldn't sacrifice when trying on a new audience is this:
An ideal 16 episode length which allows book-like character growth and complex plot without dragging on too long as a multi-season and making the wrong people sleep together because the script writer has run out of new plot material...(which is what ruined Switched at Birth and Cover Affairs for me and which sparked my search for something better...resulting in Kdrama).
Not slice of life: rising tension sustained throughout the episodes instead to culminate in a satisfying ending. Slice of life doesn't have an ending, so it doesn't matter if I watch it all or not.
Emotional realism, even if the plot might be unlikely to really occur. Rising emotional tension/arc, and having reasons for the emotions that are real (unlike current Jdrama Boku no Unmei no Hito where a guy...

I tend to agree with most of your comments. I have a very fast Internet connection and a subscription to a VPN so have pretty much total access. Never-the-less I hate waiting between weekly viewings so I tend to download all episodes and binge view. I think Boku no Unmei no Hito is very interesting. The Japanese have a much more honest approach to sex and relationships in my view. I particularly dislike the moralistic (and I think hypocritical view) and controlling attitude of Christian teaching. My daughter went to an Anglican school that is celebrating it's 450th anniversary ( they have only had girls since 1975) it was academically good but I hated it's moralising self-righteous attitude. It does a lot of harm I think.

There are many considerations to be had when comparing the series/season format of western shows (WS) to the usual single series/season format of Asian dramas (AD). There are usually multiple writers/directors/producers for WDs as opposed to one or two for ADs. Since WS tend to be a labor of love over years as opposed to months, it requires a greater commitment from all those involved in making it. So actors tend to want to leave and try new things which can mess up the storyline and so on. The desire to make money and keep a stable job could also influence why some shows stay on longer than they should--Supernatural is a good example of this IMO. I think Asian dramas have two options when it comes to series episode formats. They could do the more than 16 episode run format, or they could have a two to three season run. There are arguments for and against both, and it could be a long list, but my main interest here would be character and story development. One of my biggest pet peeves with Kdramas sometimes is pacing. Far too many drama don't take advantage of the 16 episodes they have, only to rush things during the final 2 episodes. When it comes to slice of life, I think time skips are used not often enough, especially for short format shows.

I watched my first K-Drama on Netflix and checked out a couple more on Hulu. It seems that Netflix would be the best platform to introduce to the Western audience since it has millions of subscribers globally and the software does a great job identifying and targeting niche audience who might be interested in different genres of K-drama.

Highly agree with your opinion of American multi-season TV shows and how most writers and producers can't handle crafting the plot and character development over the seasons. I think many of JJ Abrams' shows have been an exception to this, but for the most part the shows fall apart over time (see Sleepy Hollow as a good example of this).
It leaves me concerned with what will become of The Good Doctor on ABC. I think they've picked a good leading man, but what will happen in a potentially multi-season format with this show?
Ironically, there are some KDramas that I think might adapt well to a multi-season format. You mentioned Man X Man. I also think W would be a great candidate for development as an American show. The concept is really great, somewhat quirky, and I think would appeal to a lot of geeks and SF&F fans. I think it would be fairly easy to expand that world or create multiple worlds (do other authors' works create their own individual worlds, or is it all part of the comic book world?).

I think Korea should NOT try to imitate American TV. So many of us pick Korean TV over American for a reason--because it's NOT the same. The biggest two draws for me are the drama format (I vastly prefer an actual beginning, middle, and ending over slice of life series that peter out and get canceled when the public gets bored), and cleaner TV. I get annoyed when sex and violence (and even excessive special effects) are prioritized over actual storytelling and character growth. I don't want shock value, I want the meat of a good story.

And yes, I think if they want to market to a western audience, there are things in the marketing department they could think through a little more. I think they underestimate how popular Kdramas are outside of Korea. I know it sounds good to a specific site to have an exclusive license, but the Korean side is losing out on a lot of viewers who may not be subscribed to that one particular site. (Viki vs. Drama Fever, for example.) Also, I think they could do a better job at licensing soundtracks outside of Korea. People want to give them money for music and dramas! But it's hard when they don't make it available.

I think awareness is creeping into American popular culture. I just watched a rom-com on Netflix starring Chris Evans in which they reference "Korean soap operas" as being very romantic. They even parodied a scene with the leads acting out a historical scene while speaking in Korean.

The movie is Playing It Cool. Lots of bad language and sexual talk, which reminded me why I turned to Asian dramas. I'm not a prude, but too much is off putting in any language.
Also western actors don't seem to be sipping at the eternal fountain of youth as Korean actors. I guess must be a combination of genetics, expensive dermatologists and camera filters.

Netflix reaches has more than 80 million subscribers in 200 different countries (Ingram, "Netflix Is Winning the Streaming Race—But for How Long?"). Amazon Prime is not to far behind in terms of reach. Both companies have and can spend billions per year in creating, producing, and acquiring content. The only issue here is region accessibility. A good example would be Man to Man. Interestingly enough, Netflix has acquired licenses for a ton of Asian dramas recently, to their library is expanding. So I would say that both Netflix and Amazon Prime are both good candidates for Asian drama exposure.
Many of those shows are exclusives to one streaming service or another. Man to Man is a Netflix exclusive, My Secret Romance and Radiant Office are both DramaFever exclusives. This is where is think DramaFever trounces Viki. They usually have more exclusives, and if a drama is a Viki exclusive, its license tends to get acquired by DramaFever eventually--and rarely vice versa. Furthermore, for all the good that is the Viki translation initiative, they generally take much longer to fully sub an episode compared to DramaFever--the difference between 95% and 100% subbed is significant sometimes.
Monopolies and competition aside, one of the biggest problems legal streaming services may often run into is money and a consumer's willingness to spend. Sure, one site only costs $5.00 a month, but another costs $9.99, and so on. When you combine costs to watch legally, it really does add up to a tidy sum that many can't afford. Furthermore, sites tend to increase their subscription costs from time to time.

Every since I stumbled on Dramabeans 5 years ago, it became something I check and read almost everyday. However, I started to come by less and less over the past 2 years. I thought I would eventually stop or just visit very occasionally. That changed when Dramabeans got revamped. I'm not only back to checking in everyday but several times a day unless I am travelling or up to my neck in work.
The Fan Wall is a fantastic place to put up my thoughts be it a random one or related to a drama. I hate to admit this but I do feel better when my upvotes increases ?. As for downvotes, I am past being indignant. I just shrug and continue to say what I want even if I am quite sure I'd get downvoted. Strangely, the downvotes always happen when I least expect it ?.

Frankly I downvoted few times before, because I didn't take it very seriously, I just thought downvoting someone is not mean anything personal, it is just merely a symbol of disagreement without having to write reply. But after seeing many reactions, maybe the downvotes is not a very good thing to be a part of feature here. Are there many Beanies out there watching "Father Is Strange"? It is the first family drama for me being relatively recent being sucked into the K-drama rabbit hole.
Lee Joon is doing a great job to make us feel sympathetic to his half-assy and sort-of-vain character. I surprise myself with a up-in-the-air fist pump when his character nailed his scene.
I also cannot get enough of Lee Joon's hilarious petty jealousy without much self-awareness in the show. I find petty jealousy and couple bickering insufferable in real life but in Dramaland they are two of my favorite things to watch!

I love how he is a son and part of the family, and not the superstar Ahn when he is with Papa Byun. But when he is at work, he is the superstar Ahn who is incorrigible and haughty.
I also love the petty jealousy he now exhibits whenever MY is speaking to that judo actor. It's so cute. Please, Papa Byun, tell him the truth now so that he can love freely without second guessing himself whether he is treating MY the way he does a sister or something more.

I haven't been active on DB as much this week because y'know, ~life~. Of course I still check every day, but I miss chatting w/ everyone and I hope I get to do more of that a little bit later!
Can y'all believe I haven't had time to watch and catch up on my shows this week yet? Guess what I'm doing tonight and all weekend~~~! My current show schedule look a little like this:
- Tunnel (I literally have like, two minutes left on the finale)
- Ruler (has our puppy stop playing noble idiot and is now back to making googly eyes at our other puppy yet?)
- Fight My Way (SO. MUCH. FUN!)
- Lookout (SO. DAMN. GOOD)
- Man x Man (been really slacking on this one)
- Happy Together (Idk why they added four new hosts, but I'm gonna be more optimistic about it!)
- Entertainment Weekly

It's their 500th episode and apparently it's filled with stars (which, yay), but then they're all like, "We're gonna talk about/to old hosts, guests, new guests, and new hosts that'll join our Happy Together family! Cheer cheer!" Haha, it's a lot to take in and I actually haven't even finished the ep, but I'll just see where it goes. I just feel bad that the show feels the need to go through so many format changes, but I guess it's all to make a more positive reception of the show.

I still think their best concept was the wooden sauna-set and Late Night Cafe. Man those eps were fun. Now it all seems to depend on the guests tbh. Like the "Online Boyfriend Special" was only fun because of Roy Kim, Sang Ryul and the guy sitting at the far left. And the "Scene Stealer Special" was mostly funny because of Lee Si Un's outing everyone and also Kim Byung Ok. I still have no clue what the young, female host's name is. I do not see the point in her being there, except for attracting male viewers, which is ridiculous, since they never had any gorgeous looking hosts of either gender before and the ratings were even better then lol.

I actually love when they revamp into new living room set around mid 2016? When 1d2n came as guest, shinhwa, etc. A lot of damn funny episodes come from that period.
It is very relaxing, easy n comfy seating for guest as well. I dont know why the need to change the set to like outdoor/cute farm where they sit in tiny bench (dog special eps, roy kim new eps) .
I stop watching it now.

Yep yep, adding another 4 hosts seems annoyingly unnecessary. They said next ep host will be split into two every other week, but still u.u
The living room format is nice and comfy imo, some great episodes there. I do wish they bring back sauna and late-snack program :(
I like Hyun Kyung (the female host) and when given chances she is good but she is too quiet :(

Hi all - and especially those of you good people who like or love Hwang Chi Yeul (shoutout to maryxiah) I am so excited because I went to watch his concert for the first time last Sunday! He held a mini-concert here in Singapore and everything I've read about his live stages is true - his performances are simply awesome.
Am also lso eagerly anticipating his mini album "Be Ordinary" which will be released on 13 June. I've already made my pre-order :)
Here are two clips :
One is a heartwarming clip (01:08 to 01:14) - an adorable HCY fan (80 years young) briefly gets his attention:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1iT76a70a4&t=4s
HCY sang a Chinese song which I've always hoped he'd perform again - this is his cover of "Silence":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jt-IRJLeFXQ&t=13s
Regarding "Ruler" I have some catching up to do but am a bit disappointed that HCY's OST is now no longer played during the closing credits. But I can't complain really, it's been played for the last couple of weeks already :)

I've really enjoyed all the new dramas that have recently been released. The romance has been refreshing in a lot of them.
My personal favourites have been:
Fight for my Way!
Suspicious Partner
The romance between characters have been so finely woven and crafted.
In fight for my way, it's so cute how the main characters are always there for each other to count on each other's back. They're so comfortable with each other, they're dying to be with each other (their constant body-touching and "don't touch me's" but they just don't "know" it yet. Arghh this is such a sweet drama like if you haven't watched it WATCH IT RIGHT NOW BECAUSE YOU ARE MISSING OUT SO MUCH.
For suspicious partner, again this romance is so adorable. It's a so-called one sided love; but not really - the heroines love interest cares for her, finds her interesting, and can't help but feel jealous when she's with other guys. Okay, to sum it up, I'm bad at summarising it, but it's literally got me GIGGLING BC CHANG JI WOOK IS JUST wow. HIS VISUALS I BSJSK. The heroine fangirls just like us viewers on the screen -- she's just so relatable ahahhh

But... I use my phone to watch dramas. XD
Anyway, I currently watch Suspicious Partner and your fangirling are echoing my thoughts. Lol. I wonder if Ji-wook will still do skinship with the wall after episode 8 (15,16).
Fight My Way - I can't find the time to watch it so I regularly read the recaps instead. I could just imagine Park Seo-joon and Kim Ji-won's chemistry, and know that they're sizzling. I'll marathon it maybe before its penultimate episode. Hehe. Friends to lovers is the genre closest to my heart after all.
Also another drama on my plate - Circle. If you're a sucker for thriller/sci-fi done right, you'll most likely fall in love with the show. Let the two dramas you mentioned above satisfy the romance part, and Circle (and SP, perhaps) will keep your head spinning around, looking for answers.

My confession! I have the bad habits to read blind items about K-celebrities. And some of them are so legit and I have to admitted that it affected my mood while I watch these celebrities in K-drama.
But the worse one is ..... "A" was known for his gambling habits and his hobbies to dating around but in drama he's such a pure person and everybody praised him. He treated his fans nicely. He's such a perfect oppa in fandom.
One of my best friend is "A" die-hard fan. She talked like 24 hours about him. Well, it's so painful to see her so blindly in fangirling on him but I also don't want to lose one of my best friend. I guess I need to keep this secret into my grave lol

I've always wondered if "his hobbies to dating around but in drama he's such a pure person and everybody praised him. He treated his fans nicely. He's such a perfect oppa in fandom" applies to many kcélébrités. Since everyone pretty much has to act like the purest person out there.
Just leave her be and maybe she'll "accidentally" read the same article

The only crack drama running for me right now is Chicago Typewriter. Americans are woefully ignorant of Asian history. And this one has such touching tributes to the martyrs of the past, as well as showing off historical landmarks in Korea for the tourism department that helped fund the drama. That scene a couple of weeks ago at the historical gate where the writer Han Se Ju thanks the ghost Yu Jin O for the sacrifices of his generation so they could have freedom today—with the gate backlit behind them—that was one of the most touching scenes I've seen in my 5 years of Kdramas!
I do wish Lim Su Jung would keep the the whites above and below her pupils from showing except in moments of great surprise. I find it very off-putting. I know big eyes are considered the thing in Korea, and that some actors/actresses affect wide-eyed habits to make their eyes look bigger. But! As a Westerner, I think Asian eyes are cool—they don't need to be artificially round. And I crush more on actors/tresses who have a wider range of expression over ones of greater artificial beauty. I prefer Lee Jong-Suk over Ok Taecyeon (okay, maybe that's not the best comparison, although I much prefer to see the former acting than the latter, I don't mind seeing the latter singing/dancing...) Let's say some of my favorite actors aren't necessarily the hottest in looks. I'm a fan of Lee Seung Gi as well. And Joo Won. But not as much of Soong Jun Ki and Lee Jun Ki (ducks the paperwads being thrown her way).
And I feel sad when Lee Min Ho says things about his size or coloring. I like dark skin as much as light skin, and he has a more manly physique than the flower boys, which is more attractive to the Western eye. I know the netizens are harsh, but I wish there was a shield that could be placed around actors/tresses so they can like themselves and work on their acting instead of focusing on inconsequential things like skin tones or eye folds.
Are some of the other dramas written by newer writers or do they have newer producers or directors? Some seem quite uneven. Suspicious Partner kind of meanders—it needs plot tightening—it's not trying to be slice of life is it? It needs some tightening to keep the tension ramping up until the end, both in romance and in the criminal's revenge. Pretty isn't enough! (Take that, My Secret Romance). Pretty people need to have real emotions and ethical struggles too. Circle is pretty choppy—it needs better continuity—its jumping around makes it hard to follow.
I've been studying plot lately to help my writing. It might be why I've been cynically watching shows and saying to myself, “And now they're going to kiss, because we've hit the right episode count, but I don't FEEL it!” Looking at you Suspicious Partner. Yeah, it was pretty, but somehow contrived? And frustratedely rewriting My Secret Romance in my head with the kid being the OTPs and several episodes being spent on does he really love her, or is he just...

MSR limped toward the end, to be honest. Too many flashbacks and fillers, which reeks of lazy writing. Even the beginning of the last episode starts with a flashback. Arragh! The ending is sweet though. I just wish they do away with the flashbacks and fillers and get straightaway to the ending. I am glad it's over now. It frees up my time to watch other stuff, like SDQ for instance.

Chicago Typewriter is my crack drama too ! I like it when historical dramas are showing important events and people's life and belief. It makes history more interesting.
I checked for Suspicious Partner the regular episode number and thought "Oh they're following that timing...". The show is pretty simple so I'm not surprised. I used to think like you when I began watching dramas but I learned turning off my brain when needed (even if it doesn't succeed everytime)

I'm a lit student and sometimes that can seriously get in the way of drama-watching too. It can get so frustrating when you've not just seen a truckload of dramas, but also actually study things like plot devices, because things become more predictable and transparent at times.
I literally just finished the last ep of MSR and now I'm just frustrated. It started out so fluffy and fun, but then it went to crazy town. SO many clues to Donggu being their kid (that couldn't be explained as misunderstandings when we learnt the truth) and yet, nope, let's got with it being the 50+ yr old woman's kid. Sure. Why not.
Suspicious Partner is kind of boring me in its predictability too, I thought I was the only one! The romance sort of came out of nowhere really early on and I'm still not sure why anyone does anything in this show. I like the humor and the latest villain-reveal was nice, if not entirely unexpected, but it's just not enough. For me it's mostly a music directing/camera/editing issue though. It's too choppy and noisy and pulls attention away from the story. What's with all the weird close-ups of feet and such anyway? I really don't get it lol.

Agree with SP and its predictability. I started to watch it only 2 days ago, but already finished all the eps haha so I'm wondering if it had something to do with binge-watching it or because it really is just the drama. I'm enjoying it, though, and I do love the main couple so I'm having fun with it!

I actually think binging a drama gets you a better idea of its pros and cons. Live watching even made me capable of finishing Madame Antoine and Local Hero!
SP isn't bad or anything, it's just flawed and at times cliched, so I'm definitely enjoying it too. Just in a much more low key way than seems to be the general consensus heh.

Happy weekend everyone!
Today marks my one year anniversary of watching k dramas! A year ago today I happened to watch Dramaworld and it made me curious if kdramas are actually like that so two days later I watched my first actual kdrama and soon discovered that Dramaworld was pretty spot on about a lot of things (like piggy back rides, trucks of doom, and karaoke). Now I've completed 29 dramas and am watching the 30th (Suspicious Partner). I've also watched 7 mini dramas, 2 kmovies, and 1 jdrama. I've also gotten really into Kpop and I'm even trying to learn Korean and hope to travel to Korea soon. Thanks Dramabeans and all the beanies who've enriched my viewing experience with your insight into Korea's language and culture and also with your, at times, funny and, at times, thoughtful comments. It wouldn't have been the same without you!
I'd love to hear: How did you get into kdramas?

*Summer of 2006*
A teenager bored out of her mind stumbles upon Taiwanese dramas on Youtube and spends the whole summer watching them to pass the time. K-dramas are floating nearby, but they get ignored, it is not their time yet.
*9 years later*
A college student listens to a college friend, who tells her about the animes she is watching. The student recalls seeing those anime stories somewhere else and takes a trip down to memory lane to find answers. Taiwanese dramas are not really her thing, so her anime friend encourages her to both start watching K-dramas instead.
The following 2 years are filled with a handful of K-dramas, the discovery of Dramabeans, the accidental slip into K-pop, and Korean language classes.
I am still baffled that my teenage self could not appreciate these gems.

A few years ago I had a roommate who loved all things Japanese and showed me the first couple of episodes of the Japanese version of Boys Over Flowers. I couldn't bear to not know what happened (even though I'm not that fond of RomComs) and couldn't find the Japanese version, so that's the first K-drama I watched. It's a strangely addictive show (despite all the irritating aspects). From there I went to Hulu and wandered through the K-dramas they had (first with the same actors as the ones in BOF, then I started watching Sageuks because I love Historical Dramas).

@Ra On Ah - I think I embarked on kdrama the same time you did. Kids were getting out of school. I was browsing Netflix and came across 12 Years Promise then ran into Dramaworld then Tomorrow's Cantabile. I think I went through a few more shows on Netflix and found the kdrama content lacking. Somehow I learned about Viki and DramaFever and stumbled onto Moonlight Drawn By Clouds which was in the middle of airing and really got hooked. (Love your handle by the way) MDBC was my first time live watching. LOL! The need to read krama content was all consuming. I found variety shows were funny clean entertainment but I need to find a familiar face in it to watch. No Kpop... yet? I even attended the DB anniversary party. DB recaps, comments, and a group of ladies fill me in on k-culture details that I had no idea about. I've been in search of the next kdrama hook and I think I've finally found it in SDQ. I'm crossing my fingers... oh and apparently, there's a drama god to pray to. :)

That's so cool! My first drama after Dramaworld was Tomorrow's Cantabile. I love that drama so much (except for the ending). I totally fell in love with all the characters and their friendships. I was actually so confused by the ending that I googled it and found the Dramabeans recaps. Then I immediately rewatched the whole thing so that I could read the recap after each episode. I understood a lot more with the recaps (like what Orabang meant). I also found the kdrama content on Netflix lacking after a while and started watching on Viki with commercials but it was MDBC that convinced me to sign up for Viki so I could watch the new episodes immediately and without commercials :) It was totally worth it; MDBC was so good (and so pretty!)

Nice question and congratulations on your first year!
A little less than 2 years ago I was working third shift in a University Library and struggling to stay awake when my coworker and I noticed one of the super adorable college kids that we were "supervising" watching a kdrama or kpop m/v I don't even remember, and we asked her what she was watching and she explained her love of things and set us up with the first episode of Coffee Prince. Two days later I worked with her again and was all--I'm done with that show. What do I watch now? I need a list.
*ahem* I may or may not have watched more dramas then her by now. For the past year our conversations have been,
Her: Oh, you have to watch....(xyz)
Me: THAT WAS SOOO GOOD!! It reminded me of (abc)! Have you seen that one?
Her:.....No.....

Just marathoned 8 episodes of Lookout and can I just say Kim Young Kwang as Do Han is the Devil incarnate and I absolutely freaking love him!!! I want to know what his agenda is, and how he comes up with his plans, and what he is really like underneath it all.
In fact, I am so invested in every single character in our ragtag team. Like I want to know why Kyung Soo was in jail for a while, and what Bo Mi's backstory is; is she perhaps hiding from someone as she hinted at the end of episode 8? I want to know when Prosecutor Kim's one sided crush began and the ultimate showdown when he realizes Do Han has been a good guy (sort of) all along.
And don't even get me started on Soo Ji. I absolutely love, love, love her! She might just be one of my all time favorite female detectives after the ajumma from Signal. I love Lee Shi Young's acting in this and this is surprisingly the first drama I have seen her in. Her character is so sympathetic and badass that its impossible to not root for her.
As much as I love all these characters individually I also love them together. I love the relationship dynamic of our trio with Key caught up between Bo Mi and Soo- Ji's alpha personalities. They work so well as a team! Not only that but the subtle ways in which you can tell these characters care for each other: like Key giving Soo-Ji the first aid kit or Bo Mi's scared expression when she thought something had happened to her. It endears me so much more to the characters and the drama than any plot line could.

DH is so smarmy, and that's why his performance is so engaging. He seems to be so antagonistic on the surface, but he has been helping SJ all along. Especially that scene where he tries to shield her from the guns the police officers are pointing at her. I can't wait for SJ to find out the truth, and their confrontation thereafter. It's going to be explosive!

My favorite thing about Lookout is the antagonistic relationship between Soo-Ji and Do Han that is faintly reminiscent of Gaksital. She hates him with the fiery passion of a thousand suns, but he is the one who has been helping her (mostly) behind the scenes all along.
Their dynamic with the team is also an interesting one. Thus far, Do Han as Team Leader was the one pulling the strings, and giving the team directions that they needed to fight the corrupt. And while they blindly follow his orders, they do so in a very impersonal way; he leaves them clues in envelops and they have never met him. So-Ji's arrival upends that hierarchy slightly as seen in episode 8. She has had time to bond with the team and form a relationships with them. Combine that with her personality and string sense of justice, the team is already starting to follow her orders. It's only a matter of time before their loyalty to So-Ji or the unknown leader is tested.
And the cards are in motion. So-Ji is already on her way to figuring out who the Team Leader is, and I can't wait to see their confrontation when she finally realizes it was Do Han all along!

I agree that Kim Young Kwang is very good as Do Han. At first, I hated Do Han to the extent I wonder if I am confusing the actor with the character.
I've always been neutral about KYK despite all the things I've read. But Do Han started to get to me, got me a little confused which is unusual because I've never mixed up an actor with his character. Then I realized it's because he is knocking it out of the park.

I have never watched KYK in any show previously. Lookout is my first drama that features him, and I agree with you that he is knocking the role out of the park. He really makes me feel his character is him, the smarmy way he behaves, the contradicting manner he speaks in and even the subtle way he acts to save Sj's skin. I have never liked a character whose character is so gray, but he is great!

This makes me so happy to hear, since KYK has always been a favorite of mine, but has never really had critical acclaim. Although the story was weak in Man living in our house, I thought his performance was great in this. I'm looking forward to seeing Lookout after it finishes its live run!

I loved him since Nine plus Boys and then again in Pinocchio. But my favourite role of his was in Gogh Starry Night where he played the gruff boss who was in a one sided love with the main character for almost years! ? I'm so happy he got to play such a meaty role as Do-han in this instead of forever getting typecast as the hot dude or the second lead

I wanted to talk about an issue that bothered me when I watched the latest episodes of Father Is Strange and that is pregnancy discrimination in the workplace. I get that Yoo joo is not anyone's favorite character since she bullied Mi Young and acts like a witch whenever she can get away it. Yet I couldn't help but feel sorry for her when projects she had been working on almost to completion got taken away because her boss discovered she was pregnant. Aren't there any workplace protections for pregnant women in Korea? I felt particularly bad for her since, as a working mother I have had four pregnancies while working and received complete support from my team members and bosses. Of course I live in the US, but Korea is also a first world country and I wonder if there is somewhere Yoo Joo could call to report this discriminatory behavior. If women are afraid that they will lose their career if they have children, then it's no surprise that the birth rate of the country remains low. Rant over.

It shocked me too ! I felt bad for Yu Ju she doesn't deserve it ! Korea has a competitive mind set. To become a manager she must have worked overnight a lot of times and basically dedicated herself for her job. Now that she is pregnant, the higher ups don't see her as productive as before and might presume that she might not come back after pregnancy leave (which is false she said it herself !).

1st we have to know what rights korean employees have.
Maternal/Paternal leaves - They are provided or not. If provided, Then hey are paid leaves or not. What other services a company provides to its employees.
You call it discriminatory but from Company's POV they are losing money and time in this case and they have to find temporary employee too. Big companies can easily deal with it but small companies with low margins can't. They will try to justify their position in terms of employee-value.
I'm all in for not only maternal but also for paternal leaves.

I don't think Gabi Entertainment is a small company. It seems to be a rather big company. At least, that's what I get from the size of the company itself.
Even if the company is losing money because of their pregnant employees, it is not right for them to discriminate against them and assume stuff about them, for instance not coming back to work after their pregnancy. Despite her conflict with MY, YJ seems to be very dedicated to her work and is a very valuable employee in the company. It isn't fair that the company treats her like that.
Pregnant women in Korea are protected by the law. Employers have to pay them for a certain number of days into the maternity leave, and they cannot be dismissed by the company. What the company is trying to do is force YJ to leave on her own accord by discriminating against her. That is not right.

Did i defend the company? Not coming back to work after pregnancy is forced by society itself. And companies exist in the same social system. If the matter is under labour law then a company can only use improper tactics wielding the sword of social rules like in Chief Kim(boredom room of japan). It is not right by any means but whom to complain? I don't think she would stand much if she takes some legal action.

I wonder if discrimination is this bad in Korea or is it only in dramas?
I remember in one episode of Strong Family 2017, the employees have to attend a compulsory workshop addressing sexual discrimination in the workplace. I guess they must have these in real life. How much is put into practice is of course another story.

Got back from my first trip to South Korea this week. It was amazing and I'm already wanting to go back...it's funny how there was so much that kdramas really do capture about everyday life in Korea. I'm still collecting my thoughts as to how to properly explain that but it was funny to see all the drinking going on every evening at the convenience stores and all the ramen eating during the day, also so many coffee shops! Overall it is a beautiful and clean country with very kind people! I watched a few currently airing dramas despite not knowing what the heck they were saying (I sadly don't speak korean) but don't think any of them truly caught my attention to want to start them subbed.
Healer is the only kdrama I'm finishing right now...oh and Descendants of the Sun. I love Healer, I'm not a fan of Descendants of the Sun but am finishing it up anyway.
I'm looking forward to the new Lee JongSuk drama cause he's one of my faves.

drat, everything got deleted!
I am late, since I wanted to take advantage of being sent home early because of my cold and that I did 4,5 hours of tours, and started cleaning and cooked for the first time in ages. I haven´t eaten much because of the virus. Couldn´t even swallow a smoothie. Never ever been sick so long, this virus is awful! at least my nose is not stuck.
watching: Suspicious Partner - such amazing ensemble! This wirter knows how to create a Team where every member gets a personal spotlight as well. Representative Byeon my favorite - they treat him as a wallet, but he knows how to listen; he could sit back and boss around as the oldest but he has no excess pride. They are all equeal. Eun Hyuk is worrying me right now. He is too full of sadness. Especially that last episode and his sad, sad birthday! If the killer doesnt get him, I fear he´ll just give up. Ji Wook-ah! Please notice! I´ll cry now. I can´t deal with it.
I really hope our couple can face all the hurdles without noble idiocy or anything. Or try to carry the guilt of letting a killer go all alone. Or force themselves to not date until Bong hee´s good name is restored. Just stick with it and soldier through, guys! That´s what life is.
Bong Hee is squishy soft fuball of adorableness. She reminds me of a Furby. She even sounds like a Furby sometimes (when she squeals drunkedly). And Ji Wooks´ dilemma was too difficult to watch. I just couldn´t. But I like how he confides in Rep Byeon and Chief Bang (poor chief Bang being shun by Bong hee though...love the way he took it)
also watching Chicago Typewriter... help. I am scared.
Lookout with our female cougar who I think can even climb a highrise. I love the quirky comrades played by Kim Seul Gi and Key. if only they didnt go so fast with the editing, everything is over before I can breathe in and out.
and also watching I can see your voice, ep 11 and 12 had really touching stories. but the site that showed full episodes is down.
enjoying the fun new formats, thanks, girlfriday and javabeans! I cam to the conclusion that compassion is my drama catnip in the end if I had to put it in 1 word. It is not limited to good guys either.
but I don´t know what drama character I would (like to) be. Who do you think I would be in a drama? help me.

How many beanies watch kdramas with family members? Every other weekend I go and spend the weekend at my Moms house. Me, my Mom and my little brother get take-out on Saturday and spend the next 2 days binge watching dramas.
My mom is OBSESSED with kdramas.
Now some things on my mom. A lot of people will consider her a serious woman, very mature, expects a lot from you. But those people haven't seen her coo over a shower scene or giggle over a cute romance, or mourn when she is denied a shirtless scene.
She is also insatiable when it comes to kdramas. I have to tell her which shows not to watch so we can watch them together or she will watch them all and we wont have anything to watch together. She also is sneaky with what she watches so I have to monitor my history on Dramafever and Viki to make sure she hasn't watched things. For example me and her started watching Persevere Goo Hae-Ra but then she went and watched the rest of the drama without me. Or I'll tell her dramas she can't watch and she will then go and start watching them on her own. There is also the added problem that she likes watching the dramas as they air but I like to wait until they are finished so I can binge watch them.
But this little story is about last weekend. I told her we should watch Tunnel this weekend since I'd been hearing it was excellent. She was saying no she wants to watch Suspicious Partner instead because she already watched the first 2 episodes of Tunnel. I told her that's fine I'll catch up to her and we can watch it together. But she was all NO NO NO! Anyways, Friday night I open up my Dramafever and what do I see? She had watched 4 episodes of Tunnel without me. I had to call her and give her a good dressing down and tell her to stop watching. I then had to hurry and watch 4 episodes of Tunnel so we could watch it over the weekend. But when I try to tell her off for watching without me she just giggles and hangs up on me. Sometimes I feel like I am the parent in our kdrama relationship.
On another note! I just finished watching My Secret Romance which started out cute but ended up with me forcing myself to watch the last 3-4 episodes. The whole break-up trope is so annoying and this drama didn't do it well. It was then 30 min of flashbacks and them looking sad. But atleast Sung Hoon looked incredibly attractive.
Chicago Typewriter : I'm on episode 13 and still really liking this. I've liked this since the beginning and have really loved the slow burn of this drama. It's very beautifully filmed and written.
Suspicious Partner : Yes we did end up watching this. Watching this with my little brother also (he doesn't watch all of the kdramas with us, mostly just the romance ones). I am loving this one. Love both characters and I love her. They are also so adorable together and the drama has an excellent mix of mystery, romance, drama, and comedy. This drama is what I wanted Strong Woman to be (which...

My mom lives a thousand miles from me and when I recommend a drama, she watches just that drama. She's seen a couple I haven't though. She is very disciplined and knows that her addictive nature would overtake her life, so even when I say something, she says she'll wait until she has more time. I think she would like Scarlet Heart Reo, for the pretty people, just it ends so sadly I can't recommend it! Ive recommended TLAHL though, and hopefully she'll watch this one soon!

I just wanted to share one of my fav moments with my mom to reply on your question.
Recently I was watching Doctors when my mom came to my room with a tweezer. She loves plucking my white hair! Then she starts watching Doctors with me... and asking who's that, is he/she bad guy, etc. She totally distracted me from watching that episode but I truly (and secretly) love that moment spent with her! :D
She might come to like the dramas she happens to see me watching, like this case. However, most of the time, I can stand her taste on drama, such as "Princess Aurora". :))

That's actually how my mom came to get into kdramas. I had tried to get her into kdramas before but she just wasn't interested and would say 'it's hard to watch and read subtitles at the same time'.
Me and my brother were watching The Girl Who Can See Smells at her house one weekend and she was cleaning and stopped to rest and watch, which led to her watching the whole series. My sister suggested My Love From Another Star to her and she was lost after that. Kim Soo Hyun is her #1 obsession.

This is really out of topic and apologize beforehand for the rant, but I am so mad rn after reading news about cancellation of Sense8. It isn't perfect and flawless, yes. But it has some meat and the story is far from finished. I was watching Suspicious Partner when stumbling upon the news and totally couldn't concentrate on it. Imagine having Ji Chang Wook being all hot and smolder-y on to Nam Ji Hyun and all I can think about is Wolfgang u.u
At times like this I am thankful kdrama always ends. At least we have closure on the story no matter how outrageous it can be sometimes.
Anyway, thanks beanies for answering my question in the last OT, certainly food for thought!

Yep, I'm sorry to break the news. Have fun binge-watching second season since apparently we can't get nice things :(
I know, the cost must be astronomical with so many different shooting places. But they will be together soon so it'll be cheaper and the story isn't finished at all, major MAJOR cliffhanger at that. Although seems impossible, hope other network pick it up, or netflix people change their mind u.u

Hi Beanies! happy Friday!
I want to do a poll of sorts regarding downvotes. I know some Beanies have commented on them above but asking because I'm wondering if the Big Bosses and Those-in-charge would consider doing away with them.
My thoughts are that
1. They don't add much to the conversation- if one doesn't agree with the comment, it would be more constructive to explain why, and share their thoughts, rather than just click a downvote
2. It can encourage trolls who randomly downvote everyone in a particular page (eg 2 of my own downvotes were in the Liar recap from a Joy antifan) I like DB for its positivity, and think this actually breeds negativity
3. While downvotes are good against comments that are from trolls or rude or nasty etc, I think a "Report" button would be better, such that we can flag up such inflammatory comments to the moderators. And if a Beanie gets too many "reports" that are valid, then they can be be warned by the moderators or barred. And this would promote responsible behavior on DB.
I also recognize it may be difficult for the site to be changed and I know they are working very hard on it but just some thoughts on how I think it could be better. What do you all think? Just asking to get a general feeling of what others think.

Seconded!
I think removing the downvote button would encourage people to voice dissenting opinions, leading to a healthier discussion.
I saw that thread in that KES new drama news post where a downvote troll attacked a beanie by downvoting all her comments. I think it's something we'd want to prevent from happening again. Most beanies here are responsible with the downvote button, but it can be subject to abuse.

It would also cut down those who accidentally down-vote without realizing they did so, which probably happens more than you would think. Maybe you get points for downvotes too? Maybe it helps promote you? But I agree, it doesn't add anything to the convo and depresses the receiver, which is not why dramabeans was created!

I'd also like a report button in place. There's been recently a very nasty comment on one of the casting news posts, and fortunately the moderators removed it, but it still made its way past the filter and some beanie had to reply to that comment urging for action to be taken. I think having a report button would help beanies bring troublesome posts to admin's attention more quickly and save some time and work for the team too. I think the team still skim through every comment posted on the site, but sometimes things can get escape our attention especially when we're tired, so having extra pairs of eyes would be helpful to the site in general.

I hold a contrary view. I'm actually very proud of the down votes I received and I'm glad that people feel free enough to have dissenting views and opinions. It leads to stimulating conversations and varying perspectives. Not everyone is going to agree with what I write and not everyone will take the time or trouble to respond with a comment. Down votes show me that my comments have been absorbed even though it's not necessarily agreed with. I also think it stops group think and stops conversations from getting stale. I vote that we keep the down buttons.

Your point of view is interesting, because you agree with me on the end goal (meaningful discussions, freedom to express dissent) but differ in terms of the execution.
From my point of view, if you feel that differing view from others means alot to you, then down votes don't achieve very much. Down votes to me, don't tell me much except that my comment was not agreed with. It doesnt tell me which part, why, or whether it was disagreed in totality or partially. There is no explanation, no context. Unless the comment was intentionally meant to incite the readers of it, I'd rather encourage people to take the effort to actually reply and explain, rather than be lazy and click a down vote. Though I concede your point that not everyone may do it because they are lazy, and not having any up votes could just mean that the comment was not seen. But personally unless I strongly disagree with the comment, I usually don't give a down vote anyway. And if I feel strongly enough about it, I will leave a comment. I just feel down votes encourage more negativity than they are useful.
And see, to prove my point, I could have just clicked a down vote for your comment since I disagree with you, but instead I am explaining why. Don't you think this is better since you can think about what Ive said and we can potentially have a meaningful discussion? ?

I see the merits of both arguments.
I have 11 downvotes and counting. Like @adal1, I see my downvotes as something positive - it means I don't always write things that people like to read. As long as my upvotes exceed my downvotes by a huge margin, I take it that I am a positive participant on DB. There are more people who agree with me than those who disagree, rather than having no one disagree with me at all.
Regarding the report button, I think it's a good idea. However, what if people abuse it too? My preferred approach towards trolls and likes is group action rather than taxing the administrators. Don't feed the trolls is one of the ways.

You spoke my mind? exactly. I upvoted your comment by the way. One of the things I've learned from management classes is how to turn negative feedback into something positive. I guess it's due to my background in customer service?. Dissent or down votes do not necessarily have to be a bad thing. I had lost interest in Dramabeans for the past months because it seemed to me that everyone more or less agreed with one another and the conversation became stale. Funnily enough, one of the things that rekindled my interest in dramabeans' new site were the down buttons, lol.

@michykdrama
I see your point. But personally I don't always have the time to write comments to everything I disagree with. Most of the time I'm multitasking when checking the DB site, either working, caring for my kids, or preparing meals. So it's not always due to laziness ?.lol. Sometimes I'm lucky enough to phrase my thoughts and type them down before I get distracted again. So I just read the comments and move on. I do use the down buttons judiciously though, only with things I strongly disagree with. But I can also see how it can easily be abused, and I think it's deplorable if it is used in a manner to "witch hunt" others.

You do have a point. I feel you about the multitasking- my kid distracts me endlessly and hates it when i'm ignoring him and on my phone. (Gosh now I sound like a bad mom! heh.)
I guess while not perfect, down votes do have a purpose too. It's probably the OCD tendencies in me that dislike not being able to understand or explain myself when I get down voted because I usually don't even know why.

I get the feeling that DB just wanted the upvotes but the plugin that was available had both? Depending on the coding it might be hard to disable downvoting. In any case I haven't seen many downvotes except in the case of "first" comments, they don't seem that useful on a site like this one.

I vote for replacing downvote button with report button. The downvote is only good if beanies use it wisely, but some abuse it out of hatred/fun (I have the screenshot of such trolling mentioned by @noelle) and that promotes negativity in Dramabeans, which we don't need. I believe speaking out and providing reasonable arguments is the best way to build constructive conversations, the downvote is doing nothing but making people feel miserable about voicing out their opinions.

I was in a drama slump for most of the last 6+ months, watching 1 show here or there (Goblin, Tunnel mostly). Then this latest wave of premiers happened and now I'm on the kdrama train full steam ahead. I could possibly blame my current unemployment, but there's plenty of other things to do with free time and I really just want to give the credit back to dramaland for dropping 3 great shows at once.
Currently watching:
- Circle - It is no coincidence, of course, that the 2017 YJG arc is called "Beta Project." I'm banking on YJG being the chairman.
- Lookout - Did I mention SuJi just SUPLEXED that one dude during a fight scene? Holy crap. Sometimes the action is poorly choreographed (usually, it's not sped up enough to look real), but for the most part, she's more than holding her own and I'm really appreciating the diversity of the action and her female badassery. Soundtrack is great too.
-Fight My Way - I am getting major Marriage Not Dating vibes out of this show for some reason. Maybe the comedy just resonates with me. Maybe it's Kim Ji Won sinking so deeply into her utterly ludicrous but utterly relateable role. Either way, loving this one. Soundtrack is perfect.
- Suspicious Partner - Soooooo Formulaic. Cute chemistry covers over the blandness of the plot. Visual effects (all the dreamy distortions) are starting to annoy the hell out of me. Ya'll realize this is JCW's pre-army swan song? I wish this was a better show since it's the last we'll see of him for two years.
Binged Dear My Friends over the last week. Uhmazing. Why wasn't that a 50 episode show?
Currently bingeing - THRONES. Somewhere midst Season 2 and Arya's evolution into a cold blooded revenge artiste. Poor Sansa has the saddest, most traumatic story arc of any character, including all those who die horribly. Red Wedding this weekend. 4 more weeks folks. How 'bout them Dragons? :D

I'm really late to OT so let's hope someone sees this! I have a VERY serious question: has anyone ever included Korean dramas in their job application CV? You know, the 'interests' section where people include typical hobbies: reading, kayaking, origami. I know it depends on what kind of job you're going for, but I was just curious if anyone ever dared to do it. THANKS!

I'm a high school student and I write down watching kdrama as my hobby besides reading in any official form. Thanks for the replies. I actually don't know what to put down in 'interests' LOL that 's why I'm asking. I guess it helps employers know what kind of person you are?
@isa: I've seen the Interests category only in US resumes and it's not the most important part of your cv so don't worry. CVs always need to be tailored to the job you are applying for anyway, so I wouldn't include kdramas in a bank job application. But maybe yes for something related to languages, travel, art, creative writing, film or working with an international group of people.

Hello, everyone! This week was a successful drama watching week for me. I sat down and managed to get current with both Circle and Lookout which both of them make me cry and want to throw things at my aunt's TV. However, I'm finally realizing what sort of dramas I like to watch after trying to watch popular romcom dramas and dropping them like a hot potato two or three episodes later.
Anyone else been through the same thing?

I've been through that realization stage, too. A couple of months ago I was rewatching Signal then my sister sat with me and watched it too. While on a food break, she suddenly asked, "Why are most of the dramas you watch always have a killer in them?"
That was the moment I realized it. What were the dramas I loved? Signal, Defendant, I Remember You, I Hear Your Voice. Even W has an existing yet non-existent killer in the plot. I also liked those dramas with the 'dead' ones showing up! Oh My Ghostess, Master's Sun, Bring It On, Ghost, The Universe's Star.
Now I see my drama trend - thrillers/mystery done right. Maybe this is why SWDBS didn't pull me in, despite me loving Park Bo-young in everything. I finished it, but I can only remember its flaws and what-it-could-have-been. On the other hand, I am immensely enjoying Circle and Suspicious Partner for the very same reason - they are (so far) thrillers done pretty well.
But, alas, romantic comedies can still win me over with sizzling chemistry. Thrillers have the tendency to surprise me with a heart attack, rom-coms make sure my heart is still beating like crazy.

Sorry but MLDBC was spoilt, it started out promising
great things but it never really delivered. It was all about the main leads (who are good even very good) but because the heroine (who is also good) was under age and the censor got involved "everyone" was short changed. This drama almost delivered like Moon Lovers but both were messed up by competing networks. Shame! Park bo Gum is "nice" but he is far too old for an underage ***** teaser. Despite all the technical merits of this drama, it got bogged down in the plot and it's own plot holes. I bought the OST and watched every episode as soon as it was released but it was hyped up to be more than it was.

As for me, this week I took a small break from kdramas, and ended up binge watching an Italian drama which I found posted on youtube (unfortunately it doesn't have English subtitles). However I am now officially crushing on Giulio Berruti (he is so beautiful with his long dark brown hair, and beautiful/piercing blue eyes).

If you think about it, you may not love SSL as much if it had more episodes! There was just enough story to fit 2 episodes and left you wanting more, yet did not fail to show character development and growth. The drama did a really good job packing all that into 2 episodes in a satisfying way.

I was such a k-entertainment junkie this week as a treat to myself for finishing up a couple of contract jobs. It felt good. I am irresponsibly watching (and doing nothing else):
Happy Together 500th ep anniversary show with Jo In Sung and IU; highlights through the years, special guest appearances
Broduce 101 ep 8 – down to the top 35
1N2D baseball fun
Return of Superman -
Abnormal Summit with guest Kim (top women’s volleyball payers) ep 151
Law of the Jungle – New Zealand
Infinity Challenge - random episode
Suspicious Partner – the broken bromance
Ruler Master of the Mask - sketchy storyline
My Sassy Girl - silliness
My Father Is Strange (recaps, too)
Man to Man - virtual viewing this with another kdrama lover
I't kinda nice to be lazily kdramaing away!

I started watching korean dramas again after 10 years more or less accidentally because I ran out of things to watch/read and needed something to take my mind off work in the evenings and my friends were having a minor hype because of My Love from the Stars and Kim Soo Hyun. I watched it and thought it was ok but I really don't like aggressive and rude female characters so it really was just ok for me. Since I still had nothing else to entertain myself with I watched another drama of Kim Soo Hyun (he was kind of cute): TMETS. And fell in love with all the kids head over heels. They were just SO good and beautiful and sweet and talented and everything that I loved, stars and hearts must have been coming out of my eyes all the time, I think I rewatched the first few episodes 10 times or something.
After that I watched almost all works they all starred in and loved a lot of them, especially Yeo Jin Goo really impressed me (at first I just thought he looked like my cousin when he was little, and he was not really good looking...).
But recently I had the feeling that they aren't doing as well as they were before and it saddens me. I don't know if it's some kind of puberty, the feeling of having to try harder/to grow up/to change their image, but the acting feels stiff to me as it hadn't in any works of them before and the ridiculous amount of make up they put on them is just ridiculous. None of them really benefit from it, they are all very charming children still! It's not like they were old and needed to cover up their wrinkles and spots, duh. Especially Kim Yoo Jeong, she looked so beautiful in 2 days 1 night after she washed her face I could barely look at her because her beauty was blinding me poor eyes. Why so much make up?? And Yeo Jin Goo get's terrible eyebrows from the make up ppl like this /_ _\ what the hell?
I'm glad though that YJG said himself he feels like he doesn't act like he did before because he thinks too much about it now, maybe that's the reason, but knowing that you're overthinking doesn't really make it easier to stop doing it D: Also he realized himself that he's been taking on distraught and stressed out roles all the time now in the last 2 years or so, I hope that changes, I'm starting to forget what he looks like when he's not looking desperate and confused = =

Grow up beanies why all this hysteria about down voting? Where is the evidence anyone is abusing it? If it is acceptable to upvote - something I do frequently, then why not down vote? Rightly or not I admit to doing it twice in cases where I strongly agreed with the post. It's a lazy way of registering dissent without taking the trouble or time to post. So often in posts there are expressions of fandom rather than serious comments on the strengths or weaknesses of the drama and these two buttons are a minor though useful method of registering opinion. I am sad to see that this site like every other where posters hide behind anonymity ends up posting trivia or disparaging comment. It is harder to make a positive comment than a negative one, we should bear this in mind.
