Fight My Way: Episode 12

Being a grownup is exhausting, and sometimes you just want to do what you want and damn the consequences. There are times when the best thing to do is sit and wait, and times when the only thing to do is stand up and fight. For two of our friends, the time for waiting is over, and they’ll have to decide whether they’re willing to roll over and give up on their dreams, or if it’s time to fly.

Round 12: “If dreams disappear as you mature, then I… ”

Up on the roof, Dong-man tells Ae-ra that he likes her so much it makes him crazy. He decides that if it’s got to be all or nothing, then he’ll go for “all.” He asks Ae-ra if she wants to sleep over tonight, and she goes wide-eyed with surprise.

We don’t hear her answer, but soon they’re heading downstairs through the secret door, and run right into Landlady Hwang and her son, Nam-il. She tells Dong-man and Ae-ra to drink and play on the roof all they want, so long as they play like children and not adults, and go back to their own homes afterward.

Angry, Ae-ra stops fighting the nagging urge to talk back to her and blurts out, “We kissed up there.” HAHA, Dong-man looks utterly terrified, and behind Landlady Hwang, Nam-il gets the giggles. It’s adorable, and I suddenly like him a lot more.

When Joo-man helps Ye-jin carry a heavy box into her apartment, he drops the box’s corner on his toe, making it bleed. A few seconds later Ye-jin’s mother knocks on the door, demanding entry, so Ye-jin shoves Joo-man into her closet promising to let him out when her mother leaves.

Ye-jin lets her mom in, and to her dismay, her mom turns on her favorite drama and settles in for a long evening.

Landlady Hwang and Nam-il follow Dong-man and Ae-ra downstairs as Ae-ra grumbles that the landlord has no right to dictate what they do. Landlady Hwang asks if they have the right to trespass on the roof. Dong-man politely suggests that Nam-il help his mother find a nice hobby, lol.

Ae-ra whispers something to Dong-man that makes his eyes go wide. Landlady Hwang asks if she said she’d shower and come back, and from the happy look on Dong-man’s face, that’s exactly what she said. But Ae-ra just states that being told not to do something only makes a person want to do it even more.

She haughtily informs Landlady Hwang that she’s the one setting fires, making Landlady Hwang huff indignantly and Nam-il start laughing again. Dong-man and Ae-ra go into their apartments, and Nam-il says that he can see the resemblance, and why his mom stationed herself here.

Dong-man runs around his apartment, cleaning up and making sure the bedframe is nice and strong, hee. He even Febreezes himself again, taking special care to Febreeze his abs as well. Meanwhile Ae-ra changes into her prettiest underthings and heads back to Dong-man’s place.

They’re adorably shy as they sit on Dong-man’s bed drinking soju. Finally Ae-ra takes the bull by the horns and leans over to kiss Dong-man, but she misses his lips in her nervousness, so he backs away.

When her sensitive stomach makes a loud noise, Dong-man can tell she’s nervous and stressed. He tells Ae-ra that he’s not a thoughtless kid, but that he doesn’t want to be a gentleman with her. Ae-ra accuses him of having a dirty mind, and he agrees that he wants to be a barbarian around her, but he says that this isn’t homework either.

He tells Ae-ra that even without this turning point in their relationship, she’s not Bigfoot to him anymore. He says that he’ll just hold her all night and lies down, pulling Ae-ra into his arms. He says that they can just sleep so long as he can hold her tightly like this.

Ae-ra whispers that she feels like she’s dying because she can’t breathe and her heart is racing. That makes Dong-man happy, so he kisses her forehead and hugs her close, and they fall asleep curled up together.

Ye-jin’s mother conks out on her couch, so Ye-jin sneaks into the closet to find Joo-man fast asleep on the floor. She sighs when she sees his still-bleeding toe, then she hears his phone ring. It’s Seol-hee, and Ye-jin just sighs again.

Dong-man and Ae-ra are woken the next morning by a loud pounding on the door. They jerk awake when they hear Seol-hee yelling for Ae-ra, and when Dong-man lets her in, Ae-ra pretends to have just come over for breakfast (though she gives herself away by pouring water on her cereal, yuck).

Seol-hee doesn’t even notice as she tells them through tears that Joo-man didn’t come home last night. Ae-ra arms herself with a plunger to go after Joo-man and Ye-jin, but Dong-man wrestles it from her, scared of what she’ll do. Ae-ra just argues that he should stay out of it with gems like “You can’t even hit girls anyway” and “Don’t curse? Then why do curse words exist?” A call from Coach Hwang orders Dong-man to the gym, so he reluctantly leaves Ae-ra to handle this.

Ae-ra drags Seol-hee to Ye-jin’s building by the wrist, fussing all the way for not telling her about this, and for not nipping it in the bud sooner. Seol-hee admits that she was scared that saying it out loud would make it real. Ae-ra says that as the girlfriend, Seol-hee shouldn’t have been afraid.

But Seol-hee says that those six years are all she has going for her, and that being with Ye-jin must be more exciting then her boring self. Ae-ra declares that if Joo-man leaves her because of a few moments of excitement, then she won’t let him have Seol-hee anyway.

The girls pause outside Ye-jin’s building, and Seol-hee grows insecure and worries that she’s wrong about Joo-man’s whereabouts. She tries calling him again, and his vibrating phone falls off a shelf onto his head, waking him from where he’s sleeping on Ye-jin’s closet floor.

Ye-jin joins him, asking shyly if he doesn’t remember that he hugged her when she brought him a blanket last night. Joo-man hotly denies hugging her, but she insists that he grabbed her wrist and pulled her close. Then she reluctantly adds that he said Seol-hee’s name then fell asleep, which hurt her feelings. Joo-man checks his phone and sees forty-two missed calls from Seol-hee.

The girls wait outside, since Seol-hee isn’t sure that Joo-man is here. She gets nervous and wants to go home, but Ae-ra stops her and says that she needs to dump Joo-man and follow her own dreams.

Seol-hee tells Ae-ra that she’s always had the same dream—while Dong-man had taekwondo and Ae-ra had her microphone, Seol-hee dreamed of being a good mother. She says defensively that she’s okay with her quiet dream of a family, wondering why being a mom isn’t considered a dream too.

Ae-ra agrees that it’s a wonderful dream, and that Seol-hee can just find someone else to share it with. But Seol-hee says that Joo-man is more than just a boyfriend: “He’s my world. So… so… I just want to go home.”

But as they cross the lobby, they run right into Joo-man on his way out. He hangs his head as Ae-ra berates him for being here, but he addresses Seol-hee to explain that he just fell asleep. He says that nothing happened, but then Ye-jin runs up with his sock, which just looks awfully bad.

Seol-hee asks why he took his sock off if he only fell asleep, in a voice so quiet she can barely be heard. Joo-man reaches for her but she steps away, and he swears that he didn’t cross a line. Seol-hee whispers that it’s all the same to her whether he slept with Ye-jin or not.

Joo-man begs her not to say it, but Seol-hee says it anyway… “Let’s break up.” She turns and walks away, as Ae-ra narrates that Seol-hee’s world just crumbled.

On Tae-hee’s advice, Tak-soo holds a press conference, where he makes a stir by admitting that his fight with Dong-man in 2007 was rigged. He puts on a show of being all choked up, lying that the money he gave Dong-man was a personal favor, and that he played fairly but was betrayed. He issues a public challenge to Dong-man to fight him again in a fair match.

Coach and Dong-man watch the press conference, and Dong-man calmly tells Coach that he won’t fall for Tak-soo’s taunts, but that he’ll train hard and fight him next season as they planned. Coach marvels that Dong-man is all grown up, and Dong-man says, “I’m not a tiger cub anymore. I’m a tiger.”

As they wait for their bus, Ae-ra tells Seol-hee that she’s really impressed with her today. Seol-hee thinks it’s because she dumped Joo-man, but Ae-ra clarifies that she’s impressed by Seol-hee’s dream to be a mom, because there’s nothing more incredible than a mother.

Ae-ra takes Seol-hee’s hand and thinks back to her own childhood, when Seol-hee found out she had no mother and would come over an hour early to do her hair every day before school. Nobody else wanted to be the tomboy’s friend, and her dad didn’t know how to do it, but sweet-hearted Seol-hee had taken care of her. Ae-ra narrates, “Seol-hee was a vast ocean.”

Dong-man is shocked when Ae-ra fills him in on the breakup, though he gets stuck on whether Joo-man slept with Ye-jin or not, ha. Ae-ra asks if he somehow ended up sleeping at Hye-ran’s, whether she should let him off the hook or beat him, but he misses her point. She starts to ask if it were her sleeping at a guy’s place, and Dong-man interrupts, “I’ll bash your head in!” and nearly gets a beating before he scurries off.

Ae-ra overhears some shoppers talking about Tak-soo’s press conference, so on the way home Dong-man tells her about it. She asks if he’s going to fight him, expecting a no, but Dong-man says that he’ll have to fight Tak-soo one day.

Ae-ra makes it clear that she’s firmly against Dong-man fighting Tak-soo again. Dong-man promises that he won’t lose, but Ae-ra says that she likes him so much that if someone were to shoot at him three times, she’d take two bullets.

Dong-man chuckles and asks why she didn’t say she’d take all three, and Ae-ra says that would be a lie, hee. She tells him that she can’t take on all of his burdens, but she’d take two out of three bullets for him.

Smiling, Dong-man asks why she’s so awesome, and she asks why he can’t avoid Tak-soo for her sake. He takes her hand and says that he doesn’t want her to have to protect him, and that he’ll become strong so that as his girlfriend, nobody can mistreat her ever again. He asks if she can trust him.

Later Dong-man meets his father at the bus stop, but Dad barely even looks at him as he exits the bus. He gripes at Dong-man for picking him up instead of working then walks ahead, leaving Dong-man to complain about never walking together at the same pace.

Dad wanders around Dong-man’s apartment criticizing everything, so Dong-man asks when he goes to work. Dad turns his question on him, asking why he’s home during the day, guessing that he’s unemployed. Dong-man says that he’s working, but he avoids telling Dad about his fighting.

Dad won’t let it drop, complaining that if Dong-man wanted to get married then he’d be working. Dong-man says he’s not getting married, asking who would want to marry a thoughtless guy with no house or job.

Dad starts the When I was your age I worked hard lecture, but Dong-man snaps that Dad never paid for his tuition or rent. Dad says defensively that he raised his children with all his strength, but Dong-man asks angrily if he should live like that, and have a child who will resent him for being poor.

Back home, Joo-man opens a package of health supplements that Seol-hee previously ordered for him. When the doorbell rings he’s thrilled to see Seol-hee and hugs her. He thinks she’s here to reconcile, but she just asks him to pack up her things.

Joo-man admits that he made a mistake, but Seol-hee calmly says that it’s not a mistake, and it wasn’t just once. She reveals that she knows he put his phone on silent every night, saying that every time his phone lit up with a text from Ye-jin, her heart sank. She says that she knew when he was going to see Ye-jin, and she asks how he thinks that felt.

Joo-man desperately makes excuses, but Seol-hee’s point is that Ye-jin was on his mind and he always went to her. She says that he’s the one who let go of her hand first, and that he thought she’d always be there even if he let go for a bit, but she doesn’t want to do that anymore.

She tells Joo-man that cheating is cheating, and that degree doesn’t matter. Joo-man says she’s just angry, but she says that in all their years together, even in anger she never said they should break up. She says that she has no regrets because she gave it her all, and that regret is his burden to bear. She leaves him sobbing on the stairs.

Later Ae-ra brings Seol-hee a cake with a lit candle. She says it’s for Seol-hee’s first day of independence, but the cake just makes Seol-hee sad. Her voice wobbles as she says that she can’t blow out the candle, and she sobs, “Joo-man… he cried. He started crying.” Awww, poor kitten.

Dong-man consoles Joo-man with soju shots, asking him why he let himself be swayed when he loves Seol-hee so much. Joo-man has nothing to say for himself, and Dong-man just tells him to beg for forgiveness.

Dong-man’s mother calls him, nearly frantic because his father just spent a lot of money at a bar and isn’t answering his phone, which is completely out of character. Dong-man goes to the bar, where he finds his father with his new boss. Dong-man watches from a distance as Dad tells his boss that he paid for the drinks because his boss was too drunk to do it.

The boss talks down to Dad and says that he brought him in over all the younger men in his department because of his connections, but that he’s disappointed that Dad has too much pride to use them. Dad sits stoically, only saying that he’ll try harder, and it reminds Dong-man of his own boss at his exterminator’s job who would abuse him.

He follows his father home at a distance, thinking that Dad has never kept the same pace as his family. He remembers a time when his dad was rushing to the bus, yelling at him and his mom to hurry up as he left them behind. He’d jumped onto the bus and rudely stolen a seat from another passenger… so that he could give it to little Dong-man, who would get motion sickness.

Another time, Dad had carried Dong-man on his back when he was sick, running through the night to get him to a doctor. He’d pounded on the doctor’s door, frantic with worry over his feverish son, terrified he might die. Dong-man realizes that his father’s different pace was always for the good of his family, and he gets choked up. Fighting back tears, Dong-man calls out to Dad and suggests a drink.

He takes Dad up to the secret rooftop, sneaking him past Landlady Hwang’s door. Dad sees something (a cork?) rolling at his feet on the way, which seems strange, but he keeps following Dong-man to the roof.

Dong-man sits Dad down to enjoy the view, then cuts the yolk from one of the eggs he’d fried to feed to his father. Suspicious, Dad asks if Dong-man’s already been drinking, but he accepts the choice bite. They share a drink, then Dong-man asks Dad what his dream was.

Dad reluctantly admits that he wanted to be a pilot. He says he was influenced by the movie The Red Scarf, and that he was dying to become a pilot. Dong-man thinks that sounds cool and asks why Dad didn’t go for it, but Dad says he couldn’t afford the Air Force Academy and that now, his children are his dream.

Dong-man says he thought Dad was always a dad, but now that he knows Dad had a dream, it feels weird. Dad just tells him to cut the nonsense and pour him another drink. Dong-man says that he can’t help Dad become a pilot, but he promises to make sure Dad flies first class one day.

Dad lights up like a Christmas tree when Ae-ra joins them, making Dong-man whine that Dad likes her better. Dad asks if the two of them have “done it” yet, giving them both coughing fits. But he’s talking about starting savings accounts, lol.

In the morning, Dong-man takes Dad to Coach Hwang’s gym, telling him that this is where he’s been “working.” Coach says that he’s the one who talked Dong-man into this, but Dad just walks out without saying much.

Outside, he realizes that this is why Dong-man wears sweats—because he’s always training. Dong-man starts to ask his dad to have faith in him, but Dad interrupts to say that he didn’t live like this. He says that he worked hard morning and night, and Dong-man replies that he knows Dad doesn’t approve.

But Dad tells Dong-man not to live like him, surprising his son. They relocate to a park, where Dad says that it’s too late for him to be a pilot, but that Dong-man is still young enough to chase his dream.

He adds that it breaks his heart that Dong-man set aside his dreams for all those years. Dad admits that he feels guilty that Dong-man’s precious youth was wasted because he lost his company, forcing Dong-man to make a terrible decision.

He tears up thinking about how his son bore the burden and gave up on his own life. But he says that seeing Dong-man doing what he loves makes him feel like he can breathe again. Dad tells Dong-man that he’s not poor, and that he’s got his back: “So, fly high. Let me fly first class thanks to my son. You can’t save your youth. Just go for it, and even if you get beat up, live your life how you want, okay?”

Seol-hee goes back to work, and Ye-jin takes her aside to apologize for what happened. But then she ruins it by adding that her feelings for Joo-man are sincere and she wants to try dating him. Seol-hee keeps her cool, telling Ye-jin to do whatever she wants because they’ve broken up.

But then Seol-hee picks up a full glass of water, and this time she actually does throw it in Ye-jin’s face. Awesome. She says that she didn’t do that when Ye-jin was innocent, but this time she knew that Joo-man was with someone, so that makes her evil.

While Ye-jin splutters in shock, Seol-hee says that she hopes that one day, Ye-jin will be in her shoes. She hopes that those eyes that claim to be innocent will overflow with tears. Ye-jin gasps that Seol-hee is mean, but Seol-hee just says calmly that Joo-man liked her a lot, unlike the vague excitement he feels towards Ye-jin now.

As scenes of their romance flash across the scene, Seol-hee says, “He was crazy about me.” She tells Ye-jin that Joo-man remembers all of the passionate moments they shared, adding that if she dates him, she hopes that those memories haunt Ye-jin.

When it’s time for Dad to take the bus home, Dong-man runs over to give him a baggie and asks him to call and talk once in a while. Dad gets on the bus, not giving Dong-man another look, but he opens the bag to find some cash, and he grumbles that Dong-man has no finesse, wondering who he takes after.

Dong-man arrives home to find that his father has cleaned his entire apartment. And on top of his folded shirts is a small pile of money and a note to fix his desk chair. He fights his tears and mutters that Dad has no finesse. Awww, like father, like son.

Dong-man finds Coach Hwang and tells him that he’s done pretending to be mature. He says that he’s thought about that November day every single day of the last ten years, and that every time he saw Tak-soo succeed, he clenched his teeth in anger and felt crazy inside.

He tells Coach that he’s done waiting, and that even though he had a hard time hitting Doo-ho when he was hurt, he’s ready to kill Tak-soo. He begs Coach to set him free from that day a decade ago. Coach just says he’d better do it right, and kill Tak-soo properly.

Dong-man runs straight to Ae-ra, scaring her with his intensity. He tells her that he’s going to fight Tak-soo and she argues that he’ll lose. But Dong-man doesn’t care, saying that he’s not doing this to beat Tak-soo, but because it’s what he’s been dying to do.

He says that nobody can beat someone who’s having fun, and that if growing up means your dreams fade, then he’ll give up on growing up. He says that it’s pointless to pretend to be grown up for others, and that if you save it, you lose it.

He adds that that’s why he ran to Ae-ra like this, to be blunt and say what he wants to say. Ae-ra asks what he means, so he looks her right in the eyes and tells her, “I love you.” OMG.

He keeps going, “I love you to death, crazily, madly, immaturely, I love you. I love you, Ae-ra.” Almost shyly, he wraps his arms around her and drops his face to her shoulder.

Ae-ra takes this all in, then she says quietly, “Me too.” Squee!! Dong-man pulls back to look at her face, and she tells him more clearly, “I love you too, you immature jerk.” Overjoyed, Dong-man remembers to breathe, then he yells, “I love you like crazy!”

He covers Ae-ra’s face with kisses, then he bellows again at the top of his lungs, “I love you, Choi Ae-ra!!

Epilogue.

Landlady Hwang hides when she hears footsteps coming up to the roof. She drops the cork from the bottle she’s carrying, which rolls towards Dong-man’s dad’s feet. He stops to look around, then keeps going, and Landlady Hwang whispers, “Oppa. Hyung-shik oppa…”

COMMENTS

So, Landlady Hwang knows Dong-man’s father, too. She’s still such a mystery, since all we really know about her for sure is that she used to know both Ae-ra and Dong-man’s fathers, both of whom she hides from, and Coach Hwang whom she doesn’t, and that she came to Namil Villa to watch over Dong-man and Ae-ra. I’m not ready to say she’s Ae-ra’s mother because we haven’t gotten any clues to that effect, but I’m very curious to know how she knows everyone.

I haven’t said much about Landlady Hwang because I was waiting until we knew more of her, but I can’t ignore how much she’s been overstepping her boundaries. She’s dictating to adults in their late twenties what they can and cannot do with their own bodies in their own homes, when she has no right whatsoever to do that, or to threaten to raise their rent if they don’t obey her. If she does turn out to be Ae-ra’s mother, it at least explains her rationale, though Ae-ra is still a young woman living on her own who has the right to do whatever she wants with the man she loves. I generally like Landlady Hwang, and I get that her forbidding her tenants to shack up is supposed to be funny, but in this one area I find her to be out of line.

But more importantly… Hooray, they finally said it!! Dong-man’s love confession was perfect, as open and loud and honest as he is. Isn’t that exactly how we want to be loved—openly, unabashedly, crazily, and childishly and without any reservations? Every time I think Dong-man can’t surprise me any more, he goes right ahead and does just that. He’s such an open book already, but now he’s throwing his love at Ae-ra with all of his strength and just having faith that she’ll catch him, and it’s the best thing ever. I used to worry that Dong-man couldn’t match Ae-ra’s strong spirit because he was so timid with his feelings for such a long time, but now he’s loving her as fiercely as she loves him, and it just makes me so happy.

Speaking of love, I just love the way Dong-man and Ae-ra’s dads love them. They’re both gruff and stingy with their words, but when push comes to shove, they think their kids hung the moon. Both of them have surprised their children by believing in them as much, or even more than they believed in themselves. Knowing that you can follow your dream is a powerful thing in and of itself, but having the support of your parents even when your dream is a long shot is a pretty amazing feeling.

I’m so proud of Seol-hee right now, I was literally tearing up with pride when she finally had enough of Joo-man’s ambivalence and ended it. She was so strong in that moment, and she reminded me of one of my favorite quotes from one of my favorite books: “That which yields is not always weak.” I used to think she was weak, but Seol-hee proved me wrong in this episode—her ability to yield is her strength. But I knew she also had a core of steel in there somewhere, and that if pushed, she would stand up for herself. Finding that steel, and using it to hold herself up while she does probably the hardest thing she’s ever done in her life—letting Joo-man go—is going to bring nothing but good things to Seol-hee.

I was equally glad to see Joo-man broken up about the breakup, because he’s the one who needs to see what he stands to lose by not appreciating Seol-hee’s quiet love. If what he wants is a partner who will stand by him no matter what, who will support him and raise wonderful children with him, then he can’t do any better than Seol-hee. A shiny new toy may look good for a while, but Ye-jin can’t hold a candle to Seol-hee when it comes to dignity, strength, and loyalty. I’ll give him a tiny bit of credit for accepting his responsibility for the breakup like a man, but if Joo-man can’t find a way to convince Seol-hee of his remorse, then he doesn’t deserve her.

This episode will surely be one of my favorite for various reasons:
> NO HYE RAN. This should be enough said, but it's not the only reason. Haha
> I loved how it started with Dong Man and Ae Ra telling "I like you" to each other and how the episode ended with them saying "I love you". Once again, it shows that no matter what is happening around them, they'll always be there for each other.
> Seol Hee and Joo Man's break up hurt so good... their sadness and regret was so credible and palpable. I could watch it for another episode or two
> Dong Man and his father. Like father, like son. Haha

And here's my theory about the Landlady: she's Ae Ra's mom and she had her before marriage, that's why she's so strict with her rules. And i think that the fact that she was famous back then led her to leave Ae Ra and Dad? I don't know, i'm just trying to connect the dots. I might be completely wrong about this one. Haha

I was waiting for the moment when Seol-hee breaks up with Joo man. While Joo-man is a good guy, he gets on my nerves. I feel they should take a step back and re-evaluate their relationship.
I love the LandLady. I am guessing that she, AeRa's dad and DongMan's dad were good friends and something happened which made her go to Japan.

Totally agree with you. Joo-man and Seol-hee's relationship needs to backtrack and find out where it all went wrong before it's too late. I love the couple, and i'd love to the foursome together as boyfriends and girlfriends but the break-up was a necessary step for them and i loved it and the fact that it came from Seol-hee was satisfying for me. Joo-man needed to know that his loyalty can't justify the fact that he always runs to Ye-jin's rescue whenever she calls and lies about it even when it's obvious.
I hope Landlady Hwang turns out to be Ae-ra's mother, speaking of which, Ae-ra's encounter with Landlady's son and their exchange seemed more like that of siblings(or is it just my wish?).

I never really thought of it until now but I guess it would really make sense for the landlady to be Ae Ra's mom so in a way I hope she is. I would love to see the brother/sister's relationship grow

For some reason...I think she's Dong-man's mother...If she's a taekwondo fighter...maybe it's in Dong-man's blood...
Also Aera's dialogue about feeling sad for Nam-il's future wife...I think Nam-il is a step-son and Dong-man is the son Landlady Hwang's looking for....
OR
Maybe I'm being too melo :D

I really like all your reasons why this episode was soo good. You said it better than I would have...
That theory of yours makes sense. When I saw that, me simple, i thought she was Dong Man´s aunt!!! LOL, but it makes more sense to think she is Ae ra´s mother... wow! Interesting...
And I love, I LOVE how DM and Ae ra are honest with each other, i hope they keep on being like that... And I hope they won´t be basic enough to fall into the machinations of Hye-ran, because for sure she will try whatever, a la intern-style for she is also very one dimensional character, upsetting enough!! LOL

I honestly don't get some of these down-votes! If somebody disagreed with your comment, they should have said why, instead of down-voting - it's a bit mean.
I get the point of it when there are potential spoilers - that happened to me once, and even though I'd already apologised for it in the post (and later deleted it), I get it. But to down-vote because you disagree is just ergh!

Agreed, and if it is just one point you can understand they are disagreeing with that, but in cases like this, where there are several points said... In situations like this people should not downvote BUT reply with a comment explaining their disagreement. I've got one downvote and I'm still curious about the point that person didn't agree with, I want a healthy interchange of opinions!

2

I have until now 6 down-votes!!! LOL? I don´t really pay attention nor I understand them as well, like @vongole said, people could be more specific!!!!! But, yeah, coming back to the bright side: we make each other smile through our comments and that is what counts. Here in Dramabeans we are to share our passion and have fun together. Keep it up!

Yeap. Down votes are strange. Sometimes I see them on a comment and I'm like that had to have been an accident. Other times I'm just confused by what the didn't like. I'd prefer someone just comment. I wanna know what they disagreed with.

Also awww you're right! The episode did start with I like you's and ended with I love you's....how flippin' adorable.

As long as she isn't and Dong-Man's aunt and (possibly) Ae-Ra's mom, it's all good in my book. Fauxcest is something I definitely do not need in any drama ever.

I like all of your points, too! But did you notice the lingering shots of the old food plate at Hye-ran's door? I think this is the second time they've done a long shot of this. I think they're setting us up for Hye-ran-induced irritation soon, which, boo on that front. I hope I'm wrong!

oh ya.. i was wondering too what was that for.. hmm..
as of now, the only thing i'm sure of is that whatever she will do to them won't lead them to break up for 2 reasons:
1. their love for each other has a very good foundation,
2. there are only *unfortunately* 4 episodes left. haha
the only thing i can think of that might bring them apart is their family..

Those were her plates, eh? They showed the same plate in this episode and in the previous one.

I think the show is gonna go with HyeRan-got-sick storyline to try to add some angst. Really not looking forward to that.

I've been wondering who's plate is that and it's actually bugging me as it's kinda dirty to put plate outside like that, but I completely forgot about Hye Ran moving in the house above DM's house. I've also been wondering why Hye Ran didn't show up at all, I guess you might be right that she's sick inside and DM will be the rescue and it creates conflict between DM and AR.

Lol, aren't you a ray of sunshine?

I too also suspect that this plate thing is going to be the next story about Hye Ran. Can't she just put on weight and leave without inducing angst towards our OTP? Le sigh.

I hope Dong Man remembers what he said to Ae Ra when AR said imagine she's sleeping out, and never put her in that sort of situation.

3

Haha, I think the same thought occurred to me, too, of Hye-ran coming outta her house, looking like she gained some pounds and looking chubbier.

0

Not sure if this was intended, but I like how it also showed Dong-man's indifference towards his ex! Compare that with how Joo-man was concerned about Ye-jin's ability (or lack thereof) to move the boxes into her house -- Dong-man didn't even entertain the thought of checking in on her or find out why she's constantly eating takeouts.

How I'd like for this to turn out: one day everyone realises that the same plate has been there for ages, and then they find out that it's because shamefaced Hye-ran has quietly moved away. Tadah no more Hye-ran.

My Theory:
For some reason...I think she's Dong-man's mother...If she's a taekwondo fighter...maybe it's in Dong-man's blood...
Also Aera's dialogue about feeling sad for Nam-il's future wife...I think Nam-il is a step-son and Dong-man is the son Landlady Hwang's looking for....
OR
Maybe I'm being too melo :D

AHHH whenever they showed the flashback clips I wanted to cry... Ae Ra with her pseudo mom Sul Hee... Dong Man and his father's love and sacrifice for his family. This drama's main draw may be the main couple, but it's these side relationships (plus the love between Dong Man and coach-nim) that make this show great for me.

Even as a bystander, I feel so proud watching Sul Hee and Dong Man's growth as individuals in this episode. They really focused on Dong Man and Sul Hee's dreams, and how these dreams can be both crippling and freeing at the same time. They (and Ae Ra) have all experienced so much hurt while pursuing their dreams, but the fact that they are not letting that stop them helps them get even closer to what they truly love. I'm glad this show recognizes Sul Hee's desire to be a mom isn't any less fantastic than being an announcer or a fighter. Definitely rooting for these four friends (yes, even including our foolish Joo Man) to find happiness! I'm invested! Good job, Show!

The flashback clips are so precious - even in earlier episodes (and even when they include Hye-ran). They are so heartwarming/-breaking in any number of ways that gives so much more inside into our characters.

I also really apprechiated the way the show gives equal credit to Seol-hee's dream. When she said that Joo-man was her whole world and then she broke up with him in the next scene anyways I was so proud of her while I was also feeling her pain. It was a very well played scene.

Dong-man and his father also really tugged at my heartstrings. They are so similar in character and yet different with how they are going after their dreams. I guess in dad's case it couldn't be helped that he wasn't able to fulfill his dream, but I really liked how he ended up really encouraging Dong-man. I mean, he said that he switched his dream of becoming a pilot to beeing a good dad, so in that regard he is fulfilling his own dream in a very unselfish way here.

Totally agree with you! I love that being a mom was her dream but also because in the same scene she broke up with Joo Man, it meant that her dream was truly one that came out of her passion of being a mother and not that her dream was tied to a guy. Despite it being heart wrenching and world crumbling, it was beautiful to see that her dream to be a mother didn't tie her down to something that was deeply hurting her.

Seol Hee was the highlight of this episode! She was so strong and somehow I feel proud. I really love her dream too. When people ask you about your dream they always expect you to say something that is both career-oriented and incredible. But actually being a mom is such a cute and nice dream. It fits Seol Hee personnality too. It's a good thing the show didn't underestimate her dream.

I love the father/son relationship especially the "my dad is so lame/my son is so lame" part, I was feeling "like father, like son" the entire time.

Today's episode almost seemed like a mini finale of some sorts. Seol broke up with Jooman and learned that even when her world is ending, there's still a tomorrow. Dongman and his dad were finally transparent with each other, breaking even (as seen with the allowance money they gave each other) and wanting to start anew. Jooman realized he screwed up BAAAD, way bad. There wasn't too much of a focus on Aera this week, but I'm perfectly happy with everyone taking turns being in the spotlight.

"I loved you as much as I was capable of, and I'll have no regrets." I'm going to save that the next time I ever have to leave a significant other, along with the water toss that was the most satisfying of all drama water tosses! Seolhee may have felt inferior compared to Yejin's glamorous lifestyle, but today she told Yejin that not winning the prize did not, by any means, make her a loser in the end. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned? Seol you are on fire, and we can't wait to see how you grow.

And that the water toss was as violent as she got physically was nice to see, as it was fairly quiet and understated as insults go, but coming from her, it's as if she just did a KO on that brat. GOOOD JOB!!!! Even angry and hurt, Seol-hee is dignified; I love her to pieces!

Oh gosh Ye Jin, I can't believe she (a) still have the gut to be happy when Seol Hee said she can date Jong Man, and (b) she's acting like she's sorry but she's surprised and angry when Seol Hee tossed water at her.

It's like she lives in fairytale bubble and she feels that she's entitled for her own happy ending, even though it's not hers from the start. I hope she realizes soon that the pain she inflicted to people is the same as when her ex cheated on her in the past.

This episode is def Seol Hee and I am so proud of her. The break up brings tears to my eyes but the angst still brings me satisfaction, I hope Joo Man understands soon what he's missing and Seol Hee won't be too easy on forgiving him. He should grovel for few episodes for losing something so precious!

Like others have said already - that water toss was awesome. I love how it wasn't really done out of malice nor was it done out of momentary anger. Seol Hee knew she was owed a water toss moment after that crap Ye-jin pulled and she took it. Then she explained herself and took Ye-jin down with her calm words. Two-syllable damn right there: Daayyum

I had originally thought of Seol Hee as all emotion, but she is incredibly pragmatic and logical. I love how she took down Joo Man with her "I gave it my best so I have no regrets. You, on the other hand, will have regrets".

I not only loved everything Seol-hee said to Ye-jin, but I also love the way she spoke to her. We knew how much she was heartbroken and hurting inside, but she kept her cool and was firm with Ye-jin throughout the entire conversation, and I think her calm tone and firm demeanor really made her words so much more powerful. She didn't have to raise her voice or scream in Ye-jin's face to get her point across. Of course, the actual water toss was just a bonus and Ye-jin deserved it because like Seol-hee said, it was forgivable before, when she didn't know better, but now she's just being inconsiderate and rude. I'm just so proud of Seol-hee for standing up for himself and standing her ground. This may be one of the hardest things she's ever done and she may be hurting now, but I think this milestone will change her for the better.

AGHHHH This show, really! The romance kinda took a backseat today, but I don’t mind when we get this much character development in our story. On top of the cute dynamics of our lovebirds, what I really like about this drama is their overarching theme of achieving dreams, whether big or small. There were a lot of tears in the second half of the show, such that when I was still crying because of the scenes with Dong-man’s father, Sul-hee went on with her day and someone on the other line said something along the lines of “Have a good day, too.” Now who wouldn’t cry after hearing a complete stranger cheer someone up on a bad day?

The scene at the rooftop when Dong-man asked his father of his dream was reminiscent of Dear My Friends . Javabeans said in the year-end recaps about how our parents were people before they were our parents. I was crying so hard because I felt for Dong-man— while I haven’t given up my dream, my parents worked so hard all their lives making ends meet for my sister and I to achieve our dreams, at the expense of them not being able to achieve whatever their dreams are. I don’t want to ask; I might get so emotional in front of them and I am not that kind of person (woops).

About Sul-hee, I am Ae-ra when I heard her go on about what her life dream is. I thought she was cool, and I pump my fist in the air when she told Joo-man that she’s breaking up with him in front of the pink intern AND I snap in z’s when she told her off in the cafe. Sul-hee showed maturity in the breakup, but at the same time, it was realistic when she broke down in front of her bestfriend and told her that Joo-man cried in front of her. I am proud that she stood by her proposition and never gave in (on not breaking up).

Ae-ra has little screentime today, but it was nice that she was beside Sul-hee when she was down. I was touched that Sul-hee did her hair when they were young because Ae-ra had no mom. Here’s a hug for my sweet little Snow White. >:D< I’m looking forward to next week’s episodes that hopefully tackle Ae-ra’s dream too.

On to my scattered thoughts:
1. Has anyone else caught that Nam-il’s face when Ae-ra went on about Joseon and windmills? He was so fascinated with our OTP.
2. I like how Dong-man respected Ae-ra when he heard the sound of her stomach. He didn’t not want to sleep with her, at the same time, he wants to sleep with her because they want to and not because it is something they have to do.
3. On Ye-jin, how on earth do you think Joo-man will go out with you? And if he does, what does that make you? He hugged you during the night but calling you Sul-hee? Gurl, you got to respect yourself no matter how annoying you are as a person .
4. Sul-hee’s “I treated you the best I could, so I have no regrets” — let that sink in, Joo-man.
5. It’s interesting how the bridge of their relationship, Dong-man, was kind of being protective of his long-time bestfriend Sul-hee at the same...

I love Dong-man and Ae-ra, I do, but I just loved seeing more Seol-hee and Joo-man in this ep, even if they weren't on good terms.

I was pleasantly surprised at the scenes with Dong-man and his dad because I didn't realize how emotional I'd get watching them together. I think it's because my dad's also gruff and stingy with his words when he talks to me, so I resonated so much with all the father-son scenes. When Dong-man's dad went on the bus to go back home and Dong-man pointed out how he doesn't even look back at his son, but then we see that as the bus drives away, his dad is craning his neck back to get one last glimpse of his son–classic dad, man.

I feel the same way as you about not wanting to ask certain questions to my parents because I just know how emotional I'd get and then I wouldn't be able to finish the conversation because I'd be crying too much, would have to be excused, and then be too embarrassed to come back to finish the convo.

3) Can we talk about how badass Seol-hee was? ? (Though when Joo-man cried, I did feel bad...)

"Thanks for making me stay forever single", LOL You are funny... This is a sentence i used to say before, because i really imagined myself remaining single (I had my reasons).
You know? I was happily single for almost 38 years... That is more than the time i have been married, and I know this will sound "not so good", coming from a married person, but... Singleness rules!!! ha hahahahahaha It has lots of advantages, not that being married if full of disadvantages ?, but... well... it is logic that being single is easier.
being married and staying married requires lots of effort and sacrifices.
JM and Sh were almost married, and they had this old married couple vibe that made me feel sad for their breaking up, true... but in their case it was necessary.
On the other hand, seeing Ae ra and DM finding love in one another is also so beautiful and satisfying. One has the feeling they would remain like this happy forever, but then again... it is unpredictable. We can only hope to be as much happy as we can be, either single or together with someone.

3.) I generally really like Joo-man, so I felt bad for him when he kept begging Seol-hee not to break up with him and eventually broke down into sobs. It's sad to watch because I like him and I know he knows he really messed up this time, but of course, Seol-hee did the right thing. Now it's up to Joo-man to do the right thing.

4.) If it wasn't for Beanies' comments, the thought would've never occurred to me that Landlady Hwang was Ae-ra's mom. I was reminded in this ep that Ae-ra lived the majority of her life without a mom, so I guess if Landlady Hwang was her mom, she wouldn't have recognized her... But if I remember correctly, the show has showed Ae-ra talking to her mom on the phone a couple of times in the previous eps and she'd always be in a bad mood after the phone convos because her mom kept doing something even when she shouldn't. I think it was like, going back to a bad relationship or something.

I'm so glad she ended the relationship. SO glad. I'm also pleased that they're dealing with it like a real couple who'd been involved with each other for so long. More than the actual breakup, I'm more impressed by her demeanor throughout what clearly was an excruciating ordeal for her. She was so dignified and calm, unyielding despite how much she loved Joo-man still. That calm expression she had when she threw water at Ye-jin's face was equal parts awesome and unnerving. The girl's had enough, and I'm very impressed at how efficiently she cut the cord, even if it killed her to do it.

I admire Ae-ra's forceful personality and take-no-shit attitude, but in this episode, Seol-hee proved that she's just as strong. I love my FMW girls so much!

I also liked that she said she gave it all, so she had no regrets. But it was JM who had to bear regret, and even though it hurt so much, she said it! Wow! I was very impressed.
I wish she remains steady for long time, and his own development/regret/growing process will show if he deserves her or not, because if not... then I am happy if she remains alone for a while and once cured from the heartbreak then maybe search for someone else. We will find out.

The girls here are amazing! Seol-hee is wonderful. I've firmly believed that you need to watch out for the quiet ones. Once they finally have had enough, they can be terrifiying in their intensity and tenacity. Ae-ra may be a bad-ass immediately, but Seol-hee was one in this episode, with what I think will be more to come. Nobody expects it from her, and we can see the surprise at her reactions from the rest of the folks encountering her after the break-up. I can't WAIT to see how she handles the former potential in-laws! Watch out for the quiet ones, y'all!

How is it that I feel like this series is getting better and better every week??

This episode brought me so many feels, and I'm kinda embarrassed to admit how much I teared up on a bus when I was watching some of the scenes in this episode -- Seol Hee breaking up with Joo Man, and Dong Man with his dad. The breakup felt really satisfying to me and I was cheering SH on, but I also loved that she cried, seeing JM cry. It just felt so realistic. TBH, I'm totally okay with them staying broken up. I think JM is a decent guy, but unless he starts taking SH for granted, it will never be a healthy relationship.

DM and his dad were hard to watch at first -- seeing how upset DM got at how prickly and nitpicky his dad was. But the slow realization of how his dad loved and took care of him was just so heartwarming.

Although they had fewer scenes than in the previous episode, Dong Man and Ae Ra together brings me the most joy, as always. I just adore their relationship -- all that awkwardness and sweetness combined. My favourite scene of this episode was probably the Macgyver bit. I literally could not hold back tears of laughter when DM made sure the bed was sturdy, lmao! And I love the recurring appearance of Febreeze, OMG. Someone needs to buy this boy proper cologne, though I definitely didn't mind the peek at his abs ;)

PSJ and KJW has such great chemistry together, and are so great to watch! They never fail to make me swoon in their scenes together. I actually watched this episode live, and after the commercial at the end of the episode, they aired EVEN MORE kisses --> https://www.instagram.com/p/BV2MYrwlSyM/

I CANNOT HANDLE THIS.

It was so cute, but the amount even made Kim Ji-won crack a genuine smile at the end of it when he hugged her.

If yesterday's episode was full of awkwardly adorable moments, today's was full of Love!!! Beautiful hearts and souls.

There is so many scenes that I loved in today's episode that I can't pick just one.

- I laughed so hard at the scene of Dong Man fixing the bed. So hilarious.

- The scene where Young Seol Hee used to help Ae Ra with her cause she know's Ae Ra doesn't have a mom. That just one scene made me a big fan of her beautiful soul. Till yesterday she was just another second lead who was a good friend and loyal girlfriend but just a forgettable character. But today with that single flashback, it touched me so much and helped me see Seol Hee in a different light altogether. Joo Man doesn't deserve her at all. She deserves more more and much more. I am gonna root for her from now on and hope she ends up with a man who totally sees what a gem she is.

- And the best scene of all... The father son scene (I know the I love You scene at the end was Omg but I was still stuck on that beautiful scene to move past anything else). It was so bittersweet and achingly beautiful that I cried during the flashback scene where Dad ran to get a seat on a bus because his son have motion sickness. Dong Man had forgotten all those moments, cause it might have not been a big deal back then but that's the beauty about parent love. We never give it a second thought about their love and sacrifices cause it's been always there for us as our shadow and we take it for granted and only on rare moments we truly realize how much they mean and how precious they are. Absolutely loved it.

This drama got the amazing Dad's. Their unconditional love and support for their kids is heartwarming. I thought episode 11 was my favorite so far but with this drama outdo themselves with each episode. Yet another wait for Monday again!!

I loved all the father/son scenes too. So many tears.
DM has been on his own for a bit now and he is able to have that time/space to explore his childhood and his family relationships with a new perspective. This rang so true for my experience. I had to do a lot of work forgiving and understanding my parents in my twenties. They cared so much and they tried just because they made mistakes doesn't mean they don't love you.
Learning your parents are human and individuals with dreams, pain, history, etc is a humbling experience. This episode did it so well. <3

The writing in this drama is SO good! Much that I love DM and AR together, their 'I Love Yous' come a (close) third - for me - after the SH/JM break-up and the frank conversation between DM and his dad. It's due to good writing that we can be invested in many different storylines at the same time.
When I heard SH say those awesome lines to JM and then YJ, and saw JM breakdown and YJ splutter, it was EVERYTHING that I'd hoped would happen between these three characters. I am so impressed with the writer for deftly leading us upto this point and then make us cheer for SH, sympathise with and tut-tut JM, and get annoyed with YJ.
And, the conversations between DM and his dad were so realistic as well. It really spoke to me - the sacrifices that parents happily make for their children.

I'm glad the show touched on dreams like Seol Hee's. The less glamourous ones. Being a great mom is not easy, and is a wonderful dream. I'm glad Seol Hee realised that too.

This episode brought so much tears to me.

1. The throwback scenes between Ae Ra and Seol Hee, because I always thought Seol Hee was just weak with no dreams but she's just great at what she does, supporting and looking after her friends to no end, even when she was so young!
2. The breakup conversations between Seol Hee and Joo Man. "I have given it my all, so I dont have any regrets." Thats truly the aim in every relationship whether it ends in a breakup or not. And I love everything she said to Ye Jin as well. Mean but VERY TRUE.
3. The scenes between Dong Man and his father, how he finally realised how much his father loves him even though his father doesnt show it.

Actually, we are so much used to the fact that moms have to be there to raise and support their children that sometimes we never come to think about the great strenght required to just be a mom, not schooling, no earning money, no being recognize anywhere else... just be there for your children, and raise them, maybe only one or two or more. It is a lot of work. Showing empathy, teaching them values and principles, taking care of their health and nutrition.
It is so scary that some of us know we cannot make it, and we decide not to have children.
SH could seem to be simple for some viewers, but she is actually a wonderful character and she knows what she wants and she will be able to achieve it.
It is just that, in order to be a mother, you also need someone who wants to be a father (not only a provider) and who will be in your same page in regard to values and principles, love and compassion. To find that someone and then remain together above ups and downs, that is really hard.
Her dream, as simple as it seems, is also very hard.

Exactly. Mothers, Fathers, all kind of caregivers are the backbone of any society. They raise the future. It's important work. For some people like SH it is a calling and should be respected.
I like how this episode showed SH who has always wanted to be a mom and DM's dad who transitioned from pilot to dad. They are both dedicated and sacrificial people who put up with a lot not out of weakness but out of strength.

I'm so so proud of Seol-hee; while it may be a heartbreaking decision to break up now, it'll be better for both her and Joo-man in the long run. It's rewarding to finally see him appreciating her, albeit only during her absence. I'm glad that Dong-man was able to see his dad in a more forgiving light while they were still staying together temporarily, rather than to realise it too late and to regret like Joo-man. The father and son are so similar that conflicts always arise (this reminds me of Bora and her dad in Reply 1988— what an unusual but equally sweet relationship).

DM & AR: Cuteness overload. I am sure they will be ok no matter what life throws at them. Their friendship is a solid foundation to their burgeoning romantic relationship. That love confession in the end!! ?

Fairy Landlady: Ms Hwang does get in the business of AR and DM. That epilogue bit and Nam-il's throwaway comment about resemblance just cements by suspicions. She is AeRa's mother, isn't she? If that's the case AeRa and Nam-il's scene plays like an annoyed siblings bickering with each other in my mind.

SH and JM: Finally. I needed the breakup to happen for SH's sake. Although nothing happened, JM still placed himself in a vulnerable position. He should've stayed away and got out of YJ's business. JM has a hero complex. He should've known better and anticipated what it will look like to SH.

SH, I am proud of you for taking the initiative for the breakup. Let him grovel. Make him treat you better or find someone better.

DM and his father: I got what I was hoping for. A bonding moment between father and son which cleared some of their issues. I am happy that DM now knows that he has his father's best interest at heart. And DM can now better understand his father. How cute where they?! They are so similar. Now next is for the parentals to know about AR and DM.

Nam-il: I knew I saw Nam-il somewhere before. I first saw Kwak SiYang in Oh My Ghostess and had a crush on him. So I hope Nam-il stay longer. ☺

Haven´t watched Oh my Ghostess yet. But, yeah... I suppose it is either good acting, very good acting, or simply the physiognomy of a person that really gives him/her the air of good, not so good, scorny, upset, etc... For instance, the killer in Suspicious Partner: he has such a way to look that you cannot think good of him... Like he is a type of person that would betray you. But think of the very same Choi Woo Shik... He has such a puppy face he would never be evil or a traitor. Maybe that is why some beanies were broken with his Moo-bin character here, because not necessarily being evil, he betrayed Ae ra´s trust.

Wow... Ye Jin really is a piece of work isn't she?

Even her 'apology' was so incredibly self-serving. I don't think she genuinely felt bad about her actions but was more concerned about keeping up with the facade of the "innocent young girl". She approached Seol Hee simply to make herself feel better and to justify her questionable decisions. Like how she didn't care that Joo Man just wasn't interested in her when she started forcing herself onto him, she didn't care about how Seol Hee might feel to see the woman who directly contributed to her break-up. She had an agenda and she was going to pursue it on her own terms no matter who she hurt in the process.

Like what Seol Hee said, Ye Jin might claim to be innocent and clueless but she most certainly isn't. Her actions were calculated and extremely passive aggressive. If it is even possible, I dislike her even more than Hye Ran because Hye Ran is at least up front about her intentions and does not bother hiding behind some mask of innocence. And the truly scary thing is that while Hye Ran's character is more of a caricature, there are actually people out there who are just like Ye Jin...

On a side note, Ahn Jae Hwan has the best ugly cry. When he started sobbing, it was like his face was literally twisting with grief and regret. There was just something so raw and unfiltered about his particular band of crying. I couldn't help but feel sorry for him even if he didn't really deserve any sympathy.

The girl is a bad person trying to appear nice. She half lied to Joo Man when she said he hugged her (yes she did but the context is as important as this fact). She always bothers him, like when she had her car accident, why call Joo Man? Doesn't she have friends or family? Everytime she has a problem she bothers him whether it's professional or personal. If it's professional I get it and it's actually normal, but personal matters are what they are: personal. Anyway I never managed to appreciate this character at any point of this drama and the more I see her the more I hate her

I appreciate how this episode didn't dwell on Ae Ra and Dong Man as a couple (at the risk of being redundant with their dating mishaps lol) but gave us a few cute coupley moments and then ended with declarations of love!!! Out loud!!! Because how else should you tell someone you love them!! Ah my heart is happy

Sul Hee is such a hero for me in this episode, for standing up for herself, for admitting her dream was to be a mom, and for being close to a mother figure for Ae Ra. I look forward to more of this strength from her, and I want to see more of her outside of her relationship with Joo Man.

Ko Dong Man's dad breaks my heart. I really can't help dads with their tough love, only to see their emotions come out as the heart to heart conversations happen. The dads here can be so cold but you know they mean well, you know how much love there is despite the lack of display or words. Telling your kids you are their dream just gets me emotional all the time haha (I am reminded of Deok Sun and Bo Ra's dad in Answer Me 1988 ?)

Thanks for the recap! I think the competition for my favorite part of this episode is between DM's dad making DM (and me) cry, and SH (finally!) telling off YJ. Because damn was that satisfying.

-I was cracking up at how formally DM speaks to the landlady vs AR's sass. She continues to be a huge question mark for me and I'm hoping we get the answers sooner rather than later.
-Watching AR and DM getting ready for their big night together was hilarious. DM febreezing his abs made my entire day.
-I am really looking forward to the character growth SH will go through in the remaining episodes. She still has the potential to follow her dreams, and now she will hopefully realize that they don't have to be attached to a specific person, especially if that specific person is someone who makes her feel like she isn't good enough. She was seriously great in maintaining her composure when breaking up with JM and requesting her things from his apartment, and I have to admit that I replayed her throwing water in YJ's face and telling her off upwards of five times...
-For some reason I love the fact that DM's dad loves AR? I didn't expect them to get along so well but it's so great.

like i mentioned in my wall, this drama, "it’s SO realistic & relatable, it don’t feel like a drama. it almost feel like watching a documentary; the happenings of a friend, a neighbor, or simply just anyone."

i'm so proud to have recommended this drama to my girlfriend, though she's mostly going cray cray over Dongman's shirtless scenes. LOL ??

I am oh so proud of SeolHee!!! Gawd, finally! It was painfully and perfectly delivered by SeolHee - I was tearing up! Huhu. The moment she narrates that "In dramas, people who broke up stay up in bed but she, well, life goes on.." I so can relate to this it hurts - my heart! That watersplash ti YeRin was o so satisfying, how dare she exclaims that SeolHee is being mean! That b!+(#
Cant wait for that LadyHwang-Namil mystery to be revealed!

As much I am rooting for Ae-ra to be able to reunite with her birth mother Landlady Hwang as many suspect, I hope the writer does not make the reunification the reason for Ae-ra’s professional success. I want our heroine to stand on her own feet and finds her own footing in the world with the emotional support from her best friends Dong-man and Seol-hee, not the wealth and connection of the mother who abandoned her for whatever reason. In keeping with the core message of the show, Ae-ra needs to fight her own way.

You think that could happen? Because I don't think Ae Ra would want that anyway. I never made the link between Ae Ra's success and her mom. I also want Ae Ra to succeed on her own and I lookf forward to watching her take another step towards her dream

I adored this episode. It was perfect in every way.
The true message of this drama really came through in this episode with the conversations between DongMan and his father. They packed an emotional punch and I was blown away with how encouraged I was when they spoke about chasing your dreams. I also love the validity given to the dream of being a good wife and mother! In a society where women are constantly told that they MUST aspire to be directors, CEOs etc. It is easy to feel less than valuable if your dream is to be a traditional mother/wife. You can be belittled and insulted by the people who think you are holding ALL of womankind back. By highlighting that every dream is valuable no matter how grand or humble this show has really touched my heart & I hope it's touched many others' too. Our dreams do not have to be the same to be valid. They just have to be dreams!

This is a beautiful drama. Definitely featuring in my top 5 feel good stories.

PSJ is really something In this role and I adore him!!!!!

My girl SoelHee came through & amazed me with how brave she is. Holding it together whilst doing the most painful thing she has ever had to do. I take my hat off to her! She is an amazing woman.

I also briefly wanted to highlight that that SoelHee's dream is to be not just a mother, but a good one. How many of us dream of being seriously good at something. Very few people say, I want to be the BEST (insert job tile here) that I can be.
There is a lesson in here for all of us.

Also AeRa was a great friend in this episode. Everything I would want in a friend and more. She was sensitive, protective and encouraging. Without judgement, blaming or shaming.

SeolHee pointing out that cheating starts LONG before the actual act of cheating made me so happy.

AR is everything you would want.
She put on a track suit to beat the hussy up. Then when the moment of confrontation came she was respectful and followed SH's lead. <3

Just to add to your point about societal roles for women, there are cultural differences. And, even in societies where women are expected to have brilliant careers, they are also generally expected to be the best mom, wife, housekeeper et al.
So, it's this crazy thing where, on the one hand, women who aspire to be good moms or wives are sometimes dismissed as old-fashioned and not contributing to society, while on the other, the ones who go out to work are judged for not taking proper care of their children and family!
And, I am back to saying that SH's character (like that of the other leads) is written so well!

Exactly - i feel that what this scene implies is a whole different level from the kissing / mild stripping / implicit bed scenes that we are getting in other dramas ( like suspicious drama ). Even though they didn't do anything in the end, the implication is v "advanced". And for someone seemingly innocent (? Is this the right word) and naive and easily flustered, DM sure has advanced ideas/ expectations when it comes to having relations Haha.

Not only the bed fixing, but his lines were very cable-like: ''I want to make love to you all night long'' (on some sites it was translated as hugging, but he was actually talking about sex) or ''I want to be the dirtiest to you''.
Now I know what PSJ and KJW were referring to when they said the writer doesn't beat around the bush lol

Great episode. I've loved this series so far, but this was the first time I've loved every single thing in the episode. Seol-hee was amazing, and Dong-man's scenes with his dad were possibly my favorite thing in the whole show up to now. That's not to even mention the adorable awkwardness of the main couple, which is neverending fun.

Ooooh!! This episodes gave me so many feels. Though the ending was great with that "I love you." I still feel the rest of the episode was better. Seol Hee has always been the momma figure in this group of friends. She is always saying she raised Dong Man and Ae Ra. When I heard that I thought she mentioned figurative, just being the mature and caring one. But this episode showed us that she litreally did help raise them. She took the "mom" role with Ae Ra and did her hair everyday before school. For Dong Man she would console him when he would cry, even if it was Ae Ra that made him cry. She was always been living her dream of being a mother. And I am glad that she had the guts to put this dream at risk when she broke up with Joo Man. Obviously I hope that he learns from this and begs to get her back, but I think Seol Hee has realized she can do it on her own.
Dong Man and his father, were the mains for me today. Their relationship reminded me of my father and I. We don't have a lovey dovey relationship where we share our feelings or hug. My dad like Dong Man's is a provider and proud of that. He doesn't show feelings often, but when he does, it's when he is proud of us. So this episode really got to me. I always wondered why Dong Man always called home and never spoke to his Dad, but then I remembered that when I call home even if my Dad answers I ask to speak to my mom first. Oh Dads!!

It takes two to tango or It takes 2 hands to clap.

This is enough for this episode. Now you can also understand how hatred filled Future Mother-in-Law feels towards Future Daughter-in-Law.
Episode was preachy.

Bravo, Seol Hee! Thank God she was brave enough to say "Let's break up" and was steadfast in not easily forgiving Joo-Man.

Dong-man & Ae-ra, I have no words just ?????

Ahn Jae Hong is a really good actor. His tears almost got me. I loved everything about Sul-Hee. She showed no tears in front of him and I love when she told him that he would be the one regretting what he did. Wow. What an awesome girl. The female characters in this drama are written with such strength. Even the crazy Hye Ran is too strong for her own good.

Fight My Way - a romcom with a difference. Just regular old Joes and Janes living their lives and doing their thing.

Loved how SH dealt with the break up! What she told YJ was mean because it was the truth - the 6 years of sweet memories will stick with JM because he truly truly loved SH. At that point YJ realised she could never win, and that slap of cold hard truth was satisfying.

I also liked how SH knew that she still loved JM and JM still loved her, yet held firm and broke up with him because the relationship was breaking down.. it was so sad, so realistic, as it meant that love was not enough to sustain a relationship, even a relationship that was on its way to marriage. AJH's ugly crying at the staircase too..

I wonder where the remaining episodes will take us re SH and JM. Is it that easy to move on and find someone else, after being with someone for 6 years? I hope the show doesn't introduce another man for SH, but gives her time and space to find herself again. Or will they get back together..?

Love the second leads' story line!! Rooting for you, Seol Hee!

I have so many feelings about this episode!
First Seol Hee! YASSSSS QUEEN!!!! Honestly I cried so much when she broke up with Joo Man. It was really sad but I was very proud of her for standing up for herself. I kept imagining how hard it must be when the person you have put all your dreams in betrays you. But I love that she realized on some level that her dream doesn't die with him. I'm pretty sure they will get back together but I can't wait to see how she grows. I also loved her scene with Ye Jin! How she described how their relationship, if they have one, will be haunted by memories of Seol Hee. Aahh! So good! And when she splashed Ye Jin's face with water??? So satisfying! I love this stronger and more honest side of Seol Hee that we are seeing
Another scene that had me in my feelings was when Dong Man and his father were having their heart to heart. When his dad told him to live his life and follow his dreams! My heart. I love how the show dealt with it. I think one of the things that most people want to hear from their parents is that they are proud of them. Most of the time we don't need parental approval to pursue our dreams but having that support from our parents gives us the extra confidence we need to really go for it.
Still loving the candid conversations between or OTP. I love how they express their needs and enjoy seeing how their understanding of each other deepens. Can't wait for next week!

This has got to be the most touching episode!

The scene where Sul-Hee took care of Ae-ra when they were kids was so touching! Everyone needs a friend like Sul-Hee! ?

Dong-man's dad is a total durian - hard and torny on the outside, but soft on the inside! Love the scene where he finally told Dong-man to live his dreams!

Also, i'm loving how honest and affectionate Dong-man is! That last scene where he shouted "I love you!" Every girl needs a Dong-man in their life! ?
