A kiss in the flower-filled night for While You Were Sleeping

So. Much. Pretty. SBS’s While You Were Sleeping has followed up a gorgeous cast and a gorgeous teaser with an equally gorgeous poster. After months of sporadic crumbs of information about the show since it was first announced, the promo material is being churned out in earnest now that the premiere date is about two weeks away. Not that I’m complaining, if that means more goofy, selfie-taking Lee Jong-seok (W–Two Worlds).

The poster of Lee Jong-seok and Suzy’s (Uncontrollably Fond) characters going in for a kiss, accompanied by the tagline “I saw you in my dream,” is beautifully staged in the middle of falling cherry blossom petals. It’s a scene we got a glimpse of at the end of the first teaser, and it definitely makes for a romantic picture.

I have to say that, more so than the poster, I was excited to see some individual stills of our leads, and Lee Jong-seok’s in particular crack me up. He’s seen taking his oath in his spiffy prosecutor’s robes, but totally ruins that dignified pose with a selfie to commemorate his badge, complete with the downwards tilt for the optimum selfie angle. Man knows how to take a picture. But being a prosecutor isn’t all fun and games, and his haggard appearance at his desk is hilarious.

Suzy’s stills aren’t as outright funny, but then again, her character carries the rather heavy burden of dreaming unfortunate events that will befall others in the future. I’d probably end up crying in bed, too, to be honest. On the bright side, her character looks bright and cheery despite her gift — or curse — and Suzy looks good with a bob.

So far, we’ve only seen Suzy and Lee Jong-seok in character for the show, and I’m eager to see more from the members of the supporting cast, which includes Lee Sang-yub (This Week, My Wife Will Have an Affair), Go Sung-hee (My Beautiful Bride), Shin Jae-ha (Wanted), Jung Hae-in (The Lonely Shining Goblin), and Park Jin-ju (Reunited Worlds). Mostly, I just want to see Lee Jong-seok with his little bro Shin Jae-ha, who’s described as charming and enjoying domestic work, which should make for the cutest bromance ever.

SBS’s While You Were Sleeping is set to premiere on September 27 in the Wednesday-Thursday slot, following Reunited Worlds.

I've never found Lee Jong Suk to be particularly good looking, but he has such amazing screen presence and oodles of charm that every time I watch a show with the man, I can't help but fall a little bit in love. Looking forward to seeing Suzy and Lee Sang Yub in action as well. ^^ I'm super excited for this one.

Rain, Lee Seung-Gi and Lee Jong Suk are the most ungood looking male leads . But LJS's character in I Can Hear Your Voice was sooo cute, made him looked cute too.

Yes, beauty is in the eye of beholder. In fact, many find LJS good looking but then, there are some who don’t. I personally don’t find him the most handsome, but some of the comments on here and koalasplayground about his looks are a bit... hmmm... rude?

This is so true, I don't find him good looking either (this is not to insult him, it's just my taste, it doesn't mean he's not good looking to others) but I just really like to watch him, he always makes me feel for his character. I didn't watch W but I want to, everyone keeps talking about him there.

I still get goosebumps remembering his scenes from Pinocchio with his hyung, I wonder if this will have a scene as good as that.

Gosh, you must watch W. It's a strange ride but a compelling one. The plot is one of the most original and creative ideas I've come across and Lee Jong Suk's charm meter is off the charts.

I share many Beanies' feeling of excitement of seeing Lee Jong-seok back in Dramaland after a (too) long absence, and holding our breath with skeptical optimism toward Suzy's performance.

My feeling is perfectly encapsulated in Tipsymocha's writing regarding their individual stills, if I may be shamelessly take her words out of context.
"Lee Jong-seok's....crack me up....spiffy...man knows how to take a picture...hilarious"
"Suzy's....arn't as outright funny.....heavy burden....unfortunate....crying....curse..."
(and what else to say....let's end with a positive note) she "looks good with a bob!"

It just occurs to me that I need to invest in stock of whichever company supplies all these cherry blossom petals for Korean drama production companies. The demand is relentless as the change of seasons!

I'm just going to take a moment and appreciate how incredibly long Lee Jong Suk's legs are. *moment to appreciate* yup, those are some pretty amazingly long legs. *takes one more moment just to be sure* ^^

In other commentary, they both look great in they're roles! Lee Jong Suk is incredibly pretty as always but this character also looks differentiable(?) from others I've seen him as, which is a good thing. I've liked what I've seen of Suzy, both in the teaser and these stills--this is my first exposure to her as an actress, so going from my own impressions rather than what I've heard (which has been conflicting to say the least) I'm feeling positive. I'm super excited! ^^

Agreed, you always forget how tall some of these actors are until you really think about it. It's like Jo In Sung, his legs are super long but you won't realise it until he's with us muggles or compared to someone shorter.

Regarding Suzy, you don't have to worry too much...there are some conflicting reports of her acting because of UF and her expression at times being unexpectedly 'bright eyed' when it should have been more heart-rendering, but I think a heroine should be upbeat no matter how melo-a-drama 'a' is. A 'makjang' over-cry doesn't do any actress any favors let alone Suzy (but 'ugly' cry is not possible with her, she on the bright side should know her strengths by now). But I think depending on the director and the editing team if the scenes are not too emotional there is no need for any screechy crying to be conveyed unless they need to depict crazyness. And we will be lucky then with LJS making us fall in love with what appears to be a naughty, petty but likable guy and Suzy's character here — not too bad when it gets to the cute bits of the show.

Yes I'm cautiously optimistic about Suzy's acting as well. I love her as a singer/entertainer but her acting has nit been the greatest. However, I definitely think a good direction and editing team can bring out the best in her acting. She was pretty good in Dream High which was written by the same writer of this drama I believe. And her character in that role was played to her strengths. So I'm hopeful that will the way with this drama as well.

Moreover, LJS has amazing chemistry with his co-stars and has been known to bring out the best in them. Sometimes who your acting partner is could also influence how you appear in screen. Like when Park Shin Hye was acting with Lee Min Ho in heirs, she wasn't as good and looked very stiff at times. But later when she worked with LJS in Pinocchio, her chemistry with him was off the charts. It could also be Suzy didn't have the best advantage when acting with Kim Woo Bin since he is such a charismatic, power house of a actor, anyone else would pale in comparison. So maybe LJS could balance her better in this drama

How?Are you saying KWB is a power house actor and LJS isnt or less? Many will say the opposite. We havent seen WB in other roles than that of angry young rude men(tho he was super funny in Twenty). But JS is much more versatile he has done the soft puppy, creepy psycopath, hot headed guy, comedic looser etc. He has more range. Both are equally charismatic but None are powerhouse actors. Also it depends on writing, KWB was criticised in NAVER for the first couple epidodes in UF as well. So I dont see your point.

I agree with the rest of your comment tho :)
But I dont think anyone would pale in comparison to KWB's acting.

1

Speaking of KWB I am so glad he is getting better. Wanna see him soon!

1

I meant mostly in terms of comfort level. While both actors are good, LJS has a way of being playful and easing out chemistry with his co-stars. Woo Bin is more of a charismatic guy who exudes and I feel like younger/junior/rookie actors would be slightly intimidated by him as their partner. I didn't mean to say LJS is any less talented or versatile compared to Woo bin. If anything Woo bin has been type casted as the bad boy a lot, while LJS has had more variety and range to explore. I just feel that because of how strong WB natural vibe seems he can come off a little intimidating while LJS is more friendly and approachable. In that way I hope Suzy feels more relaxed while acting alongside of him.

0

I agree with Kim Woo Bin, he really does everything for the audience including helping them watch a show to the end. Even when a plot has ended you still tune in to watch him. I especially like that "in your face talk" that KWB does so well with a smile - that was my panacea. Which is why I really liked Heirs, besides the critical mess that it was perceived to be.

2

Required fields are marked *

Agree and Same with LJS. I mean I dont think anybody in his age range could have performed and carried a messy show like Dr stranger the way LJS did. UF is a masterpiece compared to that that mess. As well as in the other shows like his conversation with the comic writer in W. Chilling!
But have to disagree with others "would pale in comparison to KWB" tho. Thats a stretch. There are plenty of great actresses in dramaland who can match either of them in intensity.

1

Sorry so excited for this show, I forgot we are talking about LJS and Suzy. Any way we won't be here if we didn't like them. So I will give a fair assessment from now on and not ride off of my previous bias.

Lee Jong Suk is looking different to how he looked before but in a good way here. And Suzy...well if KWB and LJS, with their respective strengths, is not gonna bring more out of you, perhaps 'casting in future shows' will finally take into account that the audience wants an actress who can match their leading man in 'intensity'.

1

@riman-rakshit Mostly when I said "would pale in comparison to KWB" I was referring to rookie actors/actresses who are not very good with expressing the way Suzy is. I guess I didn't explain properly. I'm not comparing LJS and WB's acting talents/strengths. Both of them are good actors and have played a wide range of characters. I was simply referring to their different vibes. Siwon's character in Skip Beat once said that in romantic dramas, you need to be able to make your co-stars comfortable. WB as a slightly older, charismatic man would probably be intimidating to act with specially if I was a rookie actor. LJS on the other hand gives off this playful, approachable vibe that automatically puts people at ease. So in terms of comfort level, acting opposite him would make Suzy's acting less stiff and bring out the natural chemistry between these two. So in that sense I think she would do better with him.

1

I agree with you that LJS got a great natural chemistry with PSH in Pinocchio. At The Heirs, PSH did not look comfortable.
I also hope that with Suzy LJS you get to have that wonderful chemistry.
Already appear to have good chemistry, Suzy and the cast attended Jongsuk fanmeeting. And today I saw that in Istagram Suzy published a selfie of the two embraced. (and it was not exactly a drama scene). So I hope this is an anticipation of a refreshing, natural and tender chemistry that we can get to enjoy in While Your Were Sleeping.

Honestly if the actress here was IU or someone like that I would agree but even LJS couldn't make his Dr Stranger leading lady act well, there is still a limit to what he can achieve with a scene partner if the other person is just not good.

And Park Shin Hye, even though she's average as an actor, is not that level of hopeless case.

I'm sure Lee Jongsuk will be great as always and Suzy seems pretty good from what I see in the teaser and stills. Only Dream High and Gu Family Book that I've watched and I like her in those two especially the former. So the fact that Park Suha (my favorite Lee Jongsuk's character) and Hyemi are written by Park Hyeryun who also write While You Were Sleeping makes me believe I will love the lead characters.

After stay some year in real world Kang Chul open new Channel W.
He join force with crime detective police Park Su Ha to catch criminals.
News coverage he assign it to reporter Ki Ha Myung.
The arrested criminals are handed to Jung Jae Chan to be prosecuted.
Sometimes he ask help to Park Hoon to be forensic doctor (oops i think it's not his specialty but i don't care).
Ermmm... Go Nam Soon... I still can't think what he will do after graduate from highschool. Aha, he is good fighter right? He will take Seo Do Yoon position as Kang Chul's trustworthy underling.

So this story will be titled Six Men. Wait! If I add one mysterious character with same face it would be Seven Man.

True, one is better actress, but when she was paired with a powerful actor like Lee-joon in Father is Strange, her weakness was about the same level with the other one which kinda surprised me. I didn't noticed it before, probably because she wasn't paired with far better actor such as Sung-joon, Kim Hyung-joon. Maybe she would do better in next drama although her partner also is far better actor.

I don't know, I found her charming in the role, obviously not as scene stealing as Lee Yoo Ri since her role was written as the softer type, but very natural and having good chemistry with Lee Joon and her other costars too.

I didnt like JSM in D Day but I don't think even Suzys best performance (in sat through UF, this is what being a Woobin fan does) can be as good as JSM's bad ones, sorry if I misunderstood but I don't agree that their weakness as an actor is equal.

Lol, LJS really rocks his hair. I think guys with a thin frame like him and JiSoo, having a poofy hairstyle makes the camera pan-on-him you longer. Notice that JiSoo even in a strong supporting role is not focused on for as long as other supporting characters. But the thought of JiSoo with a JongSuk-like-'poof'...hehehe. But it suits LJS though, and in JiSoo's case I really liked his sometimes down style like he had in Page Turner, but that's about as poofy his hair should ever be.
