Drama viewership ratings for the week of June 19-25, 2017

Sometimes it feels like I’m calling a race, but despite having a narrow lead last week, My Sassy Girl dropped back down to second place against Fight My Way, which netted a fairly impressive 12.1% in a series high. But it’s good to see Lookout getting a bit more attention, since it sucks for any show to be wallowing in low numbers.

Seven Day Queen fared even worse this week than it has in previous weeks, which seems tragic considering the positive things I’m hearing about it (it’s on the list, but I’m drowning in dramas!). There must be something about it that’s just not landing with the Korean viewing public, though maybe it might just be sageuk fatigue, since Ruler—Master of the Mask has been taking more of the viewership from day one, though Suspicious Partner isn’t all that far behind.

New is-it-or-isn’t-it-a-makjang Woman of Dignity pulled in about the same numbers as last week, and the same goes for Forest of Secrets (at least as of Saturday). Even Duel is just holding onto the same audience it’s had, so I’m not sure if we’ll be in for many surprises until a new series comes to shake things up. But as always with dramaland, you just never know.

Yeah, I think it's a timing problem. I read somewhere that knetz are asking them to move it to an earlier slot.

It might not be popular with the k-audience. I personally think it's kind of boring, then again I've dropped a lot of dramas recently so it might just be me. Fight My Way, Ruler, The Best Hit and I'm hanging on to Suspicious Partner because of Nam Ji-hyun/Ji Chang-wook's cuteness and to see how they capture the killer.

That's true I've heard that more people are watching dramas online now which might explain why even very popular dramas don't really rate extremely high. They really should find a way to collect online viewer data too.

It's because of it's strange timeslot. It's really a pity, it's such a great drama, the cast is amazing and it's so funny!
But since the latest episodes had some PPL, I'm guessing it's getting a bit more attention so yay!

I've watched MDBC and I'm now watching SDQ. Although I can see why people think they might be similar, I view them differently. Foremost, SDQ burst out of the gate with the female lead going to the gallows. What a way to start if you are expecting a romantic fluffy saeguk, right?

For sweet, young romance, I'd say MDBC is better. SDQ centers around the romance between a future king and his queen but their ill fated love is history. Politics will probably feature a lot more in SDQ than MDBC.

I enjoy 7DQ. At first I wish something like Princess Man. But after watching it so far, I think this drama has its own identity. And its turns out well for me. I hope this drama isn't like MDBC that I think its good until the middle but loses control on the way to the end of story (sorry for MDBC fans...). But whatever it is, 7DQ really doesn't deserve this rating. Honestly, still angry with KBS, why you should broadcast this drama now. What a bad timing, really ...

8
reply

Required fields are marked *

Perhaps it's the tonal difference. MDBC was light and fluffy until its last few episodes while SDQ has been heavy in politics since its first episode (but not as heavy as TPM).

MDBC remains my all-time favorite drama despite the drama stumbling a bit near the end. But I love SDQ a lot too, and I view it as its own beast. More than anything, it's the directing that reminds me of MDBC in that it elevates the experience and injects warmth and energy into an already well-written plot.

That ending went overboard even for a dress up sageuk.

1

@kiara

I personally liked the ending and I only wish it were more fleshed out. But I see why people would be upset that it deviated from history. That ending is very YMMV. We'll just have to agree to disagree on this.

2

I understand Elle. I'm too much of a history fan to accept extreme distortion of the history. At the same time but I do understand why they want a happy ending for this light hearted fusion.

2

I wonder if it's just not hitting the sweet spot with any audience. Younger audiences will gravitate toward the lighthearted sageuk's with a modern twist. Mature audiences (from what I understand) want their history 100% accurate. And SDQ has an unconventional - though brilliant - take on Yeonsangun.

I've searched a bunch of times for a listing of what shows air against each other on any given night. Would love to know what show SDQ competes directly against.

Ugh Circle and SDQ's ratings are depressing. These are the two shows I'm watching and wholeheartedly loving, and they're not doing well with the k-audience. *sigh*

I do think it may be (romance) sageuk fatigue with SDQ since netizen comments are positive. It's the last to of the three to premiere, it's going head to head with top-rater Ruler, and the time period/king in the drama is the same as the recently wrapped-up Rebel. KBS should have aired this later in the year.

Plot-heavy shows like Circle don't tend to attract more viewers as their run goes on because you'll miss a lot of developments if you don't pay attention. Casual viewers prefer dramas where you can just jump in the middle and still be able to follow the story. It's heartbreaking, but I do get it.

My dark horse Lookout is slowly catching up in the Mon-Tues slot. The three dramas will probably be going neck to neck with each other. I don't think there is going to be much of a shake up here unless FMW is the type of drama where there's going to be some huge reveal or showdown closer to the finale.

??? is all I can say for SDQ! I also want to know why this is not landing with Korean viewers. I mean why is the ratings this bad? I don't think it's the competition. Ruler isn't obliterating the other two and SP actually decreased. The issue lies with SDQ and I am really curious.

The only reason I can think of (besides the reasons I stated in my above comment) is that perhaps the public doesn't like this rather romantic portayal of Yeonsangun.

The drop isn't even that significant, IMO, since its competitors gain and drop by a full point or more all the time. However, a full-point drop is more obvious with SDQ since it's been doing poorly with the ratings.

Agree about Yeonsangun. Also a back to back drama with the worst king in history can get tiring.
Yeok was no heroic figure in history either.

SDQ does not have that strong balance between the romance and politics enough to draw the sageuk fans and older viewers like what "Princess Man" did.
King Sejo's coup and reign was well done and true the history.
Kim Yeong-cheol gave a compelling portrayal of Sejo. Yeong-cheol has no competition when it comes sageuk. He is fantastic and well known in this genre since the early 2000s.

I also think it has something to do with the cast and the timing.
There is already a sageuk on that timeslot with beloved child actors headlining it.

I don't get KBS. SDQ would've fared better in ratings in a different timeslot. It may not be a hit but it might have a chance to hit double digit.

KBS should have pushed back the premiere to the second half of this year. SDQ premiered after two pre-produced sageuks in the same month. Someone at KBS should have figured at that that would be a huge disadvantage for the drama.

Required fields are marked *

The now (relatively) grown-up child actors are much-beloved in Korea, but it doesn't always translate to ratings. Yeo Jin-goo, for example, hasn't had a successful drama since debuting as a leading man in Orange Marmalade.

3

I've been living out of this world so I've just discovered Yeo Jin Goo. He is amazing. Ratings hit or not, I hope he won't be deterred from taking the off beaten path. Sci fi on cable, that's a risk but I can't imagine anyone else as Woo Jin in Circle ?

5

Yeo Jin-goo have n't headline a sageuk on his own yet.

0

@kiara Jackpot doesn't count? I so want to watch him and Choi Min Soo but I've read terrible reviews on the show.

1

@outofthisworld
YJG was second lead in Jackpot. The show is just like Ruler. Messy (and nonsense) writing ruined everything, coupled with some mediocre acting. A pity, really.

2

Jang Keun-suk was the main lead in Jackpot.
If you want to just watch it for Yeo Jin-goo and Choi Min-soo you won't be disappointed.

3

@outofthisworld
Kiara can distinguish between different elements of a show really well and can stay for what she loves despite everything else. I wish I can be that good in handling Kdramas. I tend to get high blood pressures pretty often from bad writing and/or acting, that's why I picked up my shoes and ran for my life as soon as Choi Min Soo exited the show. But yeah, I agree with kiara; if you stay just for Choi Min Soo and YJG they were both doing well in their roles.

@HyeMi
You are too kind. I'm just a grumpy sageuk lover who watched too many sageuks.
The genre has changed a lot but I'm still stuck in the old school sageuk era :(.

0

@kiara
Please don't mention it. I know what you mean. Actually I couldn't get into sageuks at first when I started watching Kdramas in 2012 because the ones that were on back then felt too modern for my taste (Moon-Sun and Sungkyungkwan Scandal). I guess I have adapted way too well seeing how I actually like fusion sageuks now haha.

I used to like watching Chinese period dramas, those that were made in the 1990s and early 2000s. Sadly they are not subbed or available online, and I don't speak/ understand Chinese even if I can get my hand on a drama site that hosts them.

2

I have stated this same reason somewhere else. If I am Korean, I won't be that happy to see how a drama want to sugarcoat a tyrant King in my country, and won't interested to know his romantic side etc. I also think lack of star power is contributed to the low ratings.. The other two drama are not really tough competitions. Strangely, SDQ has every chance to get at least what Lookout got, so that's the only reasons that I could think of why this drama didn't get higher rating than now. Lookout also doesn't have huge star power either.

Despite of how good it is as viewers claimed, I don't think the rating will be much higher for now. Maybe it can be much higher after both Ruler and SP ended later. But it's also depends on these dramas' replacement. SP will be replaced by Reunited Worlds (Yeon Jin Goo & Lee Yeon Hee) & Ruler will be replaced by Man Who Dies To Live (Choi Min Soo & Shin Sung Rok).

I think you might be right about the Koreans not interested in Yeonsangun being anything else other than a despot.

As for lack of star power, Lookout has the same issue. So SDQ should at least get midway between 5% and 10% but it hasn't. Someone mentioned the positive reviews by knetz but the number of comments were very low from what I've gathered. So, people in Korea just aren't watching. One would think that after the pilot, more viewers might come in after watching the rerun or online. Nope, it didn't happen either.

Conclusion for now - Bad timing, competing against another saeguk, romanticization of a hated historical figure and lack of star power.

I seriously doubt it will go much higher after Ruler and SP end. It might be too late by then.

As long as the epi doesn't get cut and the rating doesn't go below 5% it will be fine in my opinion.. KBS can be cruel at times like this. - Beautiful Mind is the best example.

2

Perhaps another reason for the low ratings for 7DQ is the fact that the story ended in tragedy. If you know that the main couple you should be rooting for are going to break up in the end, do you still invest the time and follow their story when there are other feel good non tragic stories out there?

1

@Adal I doubt it is the reason. Jang Ok Jung Live In Love did well in rating (even managed to get around 10-11%) and also competed against Gu Family Book which was a hit that time, even it is a well known that she will die at the end of drama. Well I also acknowledged it was part of star power as well ( the combo of Kim Tae Hee and Yoo Ah In who was a rising a star at that time). Tragic ending is not something new in sageuk anyway.

1

I am Korean and I agree. Both Yeonsangun and Joongjong are considered two of the worst Korean kings ever so why would I be enticed into watching some contrived tired triangular love story between them and a woman who is simply remembered by some skirt rock story repeated in 2 seconds when you get a palace tour? I mean, if they make a drama about some imagined love story among W. Bush, Jeb Bush and Laura Bush, would Americans tune in?

Thank you all. Those reasons make sense. Especially about not wanting to watch a love triangle between two of the worst rulers in history.

Personally, I am loving 7DQ. This is my first saeguk that I am really connecting with. People keep raving about various saeguks, and I keep trying them, but I never connect. Even those I like well enough to finish, I don't particularly care about. This one is different. Not sure why, but I find myself on the edge of my seat all episode. Caring deeply. So I find myself disappointed that other people are not liking it as much as I do, but at least now I am not as baffled by it.

It's not necessarily bad if you still find it fun and interesting to watch. Fun and interesting might not be synonymous with good. I can still find a badly scripted or acted drama entertaining.

Not so much with Ruler unfortunately. I'm just adverse to the way it treats the majority of its characters. Having two boys literally scream to each other, claiming ownership over a girl while she's absent is the last straw for me.

3

If you are Kim So Hyun's fan, I will say "Don't watch it!" Even though I am not her fan, I feel frustrated for her.

If you are Yoo Seung Ho's fan, you may still enjoy it because the story is male hero centric. Plus the drama is totally melodramatic which is his strength. I get the impression that most of the viewers who are still watching are his fans.

3

haha there you got me.
I am big fan of him, so I hang on and try to watch 1-2 eps per 3weeks, snail speed.

I am a bit disapointed anwy even his charc is awesomely written, since I "need" him badly to score a big hit after his military, he does an A-list actor already, but he hasnt hit his hayday yet. KSH,SJK,PBY, LMH hit it all:(
I wait since I Miss You, Remembe Son War, and Ruler, but all are badly written. sighed.

1

I personally like Ruler. The writing isn't great but it is still interesting enough for me to continue watching. YSH is doing a great job as usual for his part of the drama. I am not crazy about the leading female character and find her to be very dull. However, the greediness of the fake king and the trouble he is causing due to his jealousy is a good watch. I will continue with the drama to the end and I'm happy their ratings are good for a weekday drama this time of year.

1

Suspicious Partner...I'm at around ep 13 and I'm losing interest. Love these two actors, but it's just SO MUCH drawn out love angst and scenes of sad and yearning looks that I can't deal. The actual killer plot is moving way too slow.

I'd say Forest of Secrets is doing fairly well especially given tvN's recent string of flops. Hitting and maintaining 4.1% is a great thing for the show.

I have no comparison for Best Hit to be able to measure its ratings performance. I wonder if its current ratings are considered good when you factor in the timeslot, or if it's not doing well because of the low numbers for public broadcast.

Fight for My Way beats "bleh" once again and did quite better this week. Circle has lost ground but TVN can get some consolation from Stranger.
The Best Hit deserves to be a hit but can't. It would have done better in Wed-Thu Prime slot.
Women of Dignity. Woah. taking place of any usual talk/variety show? 3.3 for jtbc is pretty good.
TVN is done for if they don't seriously introspect what is going wrong with their programming. It's a business and others are taking away your customers.

I think Best Hit's rating is acceptable ,since it's KBS first drama on its time slot..
for 7 DQ it's really the time slot that should be blame. Say Im not a fan of those 3 dramas: SP, Ruler & 7DQ.. and "Ruler & SP came air first, Im not gonna switch kdrama since I already started those 2.." OR-- maybe K-viewers doesn't want to think that much since, 7dq needs a little analysis..
So it's really a matter of who came first, and never mind the plot... Poor K-viewers..

Circle deserves better ratings ?

I really dislike the split episode thing the big three are doing. Makes ratings even more confusing.

I don't get why 7 day queen's ratings are so dismal. It seems to be a better sageuk that Mask. Also, it feels like Suspicious Partner should be higher too. It's such an enjoyable show, but I think it suffers more than the others dramas from the episode split due to it already straddling 2 different genres (rom-com and crime thriller).

I actually like Ruler better so for me, I get the ratings. I will admit that I just dropped 7DQ because of a couple a reasons I stated in an earlier post, but another reason is, there seems to be only romance. Don't get me wrong I love romance but I also need more of other story lines at the same time. My Sassy Girl has become more interesting and I find a good balance with that drama. I was not crazy about MSG at first, but is has grown on me.

Romance, Politics and family is the lesson focus for 7DQ.... I salute all those watching Ruler up to now, seems because they're just wasting their electricity bill for nothing...

Congrat's to Ruler for holding the #1 spot. Even if the writing is not the best, I am still interested in watching and happy that I'm not alone.

The drama that is surprising me is You Are Too Much. It is holding the #2 spot (just barely but even so). This drama has gotten so crazy and it has become a comedy to me. I do not watch the episodes as soon as they are out, rather I wait a few days and watch if I do not have anything else to watch while waiting for episodes of other dramas that I like to be posted.

Glad to see Forest of Secrets doing fairly well for a cable show. Grant you it's not a knockout, but it's not pulling in Circle numbers. Which is a shame!!! Why is Circle so low??!? That show is just as good!! And poor Best Hit. I hope that they can earn higher ratings further along. That show is funny and sweet.

I don't know why such a sci-fi thriller such as Circle is not getting the ratings. Fast paced, intelligent, thought provoking premise of what makes us human, moral dilemmas, good acting....what's not to like? Check it out and at least let it get good ratings with us!

I just watched two episodes of Seven Day Queen off the KBS World channel on our TV, and while I haven't watched sageuk in a while (lol MLSHR), it did seem pretty ok so I don't get the dismal ratings either. But as most of you are saying, it probably has to do with the romanticisation of Yeonsangun. Pity, really.

Haha romanticisation of Yeonsangun! It's like Jang Ok Jung Living In Love again (although I liked that drama lawl). I guess people don't like it when they try to make typical villains "good"

I feel Fight for my way is over rated.Except for Dong man's and Aera's chemistry, there is nothing great about the show. The storyline for 2nd lead couple is not powerful enough.Still I am skipping some parts and hanging in there for Park Seo Joon.Circle in comparison is thought provoking and a well executed drama. You just can't miss it.Again, another amazing TVN drama suffering like Chicago Typewriter. For Wednesday and Thursday slot, SP and SDQ are better choices than Ruler. I seriously want to meet the fans who are still watching Ruler. They sure have immense patience.
Forest of Secrets, I am loving it.

Ugh I don't understand why Queen for 7 Days has such low ratings, the plot and acting are on point. Is it because most people don't like angst?

I'm a little worried KBS might cut some of the episodes, if that happens I'm gonna be so mad :(

Maybe because of the time slot?i hope theyre not going to cut it short.its really amazing.i wonder why ruler has better rating when its obviously lacking in so many aspect

Ddabong! I think it's a decent rating considering it airs at the same time as sitcoms, and the dreadful time slot (seriously, who watches dramas at 11pm on Fridays except us?)

Seven Day Queen. It was an ill-fated encounter between this drama and the scheduling team at KBS. People are already watching one or maybe two sageuks (MSG and Ruler) and they have just seen Yeonsangun in Rebel... What were you thinking? I wish (because I'm wishfultoki) that they had given The Best Hit a prime-time slot and waited to air SDQ later this year.

Ho hum..whether be it from KBS or SBS,.. whatever. Korean soap dramas nowadays sucks. Other than MFIS the others are not worth watching.

For clarification, MFIS is "My father is strange". Known in your native viewership listing as without the "My".

My Sassy Girl's plot is picking up story wise, but I wished it was more comedic looks like it may go more melo. LookOut is fast paced, and I do find it interersting, bu Love In Trouble or AKA Suspicious Partner is adorkable with the two leads. 7DQ is something I will wait until the end and marthon.... but Stranger is not to be missed.

I think is due to the casting slot. I m addicted to suspicious partners and ruler. Recently, l juz finished 8 eps of 7 days of Queen and discovered it's quite a nice drama. But sad of the ratings becos' it's happens all the above casting on the same days so is hard to choose which drama u wanna watch .

Though I love Ruler, I think 7DQ deserves better ratings because 7DQ is getting better while I'm starting to lose interest in Ruler. As for SP, the ratings stay strong because of JCW and NJH lovey dovey moments, I guess?
