Drama viewership ratings for the week of June 12-18, 2017

There was a pivotal and interesting shift this week, with My Sassy Girl narrowly overtaking Fight My Way for the top spot. The fusion sageuk has been steadily rising in numbers over the past couple weeks, but it’s a close race for sure—Lookout isn’t too far behind, but it seems unlikely that it’ll see first place. But who knows, really? Anything is possible these days.

Not much has changed over in the middle of the week, with Ruler—Master of the Mask continuing to take first place, though it’s just sustaining the same viewership it’s had. Suspicious Partner maintained second place at just under 10%, while poor Seven Day Queen seems to just be holding on at under 7%.

Woman of Dignity aired in the slot previously held by Man to Man to a very moderate 2.0%, while KBS’s The Best Hit fared only slightly better on Friday. It did see a considerable jump to 5.5% on Saturday, so where it’ll end up is anyone’s guess. Otherwise, Duel isn’t making waves on the weekend, but Forest of Secrets saw a rise to 4.1% last week and maintained it for its Saturday episode. All are good shows, so here’s hoping for the best!

Someone in Ruler recap mentioned a rating system in Korea called 2049 which soompi stated "calculates viewership among 20- to 40-year-olds, taking into account factors that traditional ratings preclude, like streaming and social media." That beanie's point was that Suspicious Partner had higher ratings than Ruler with regards to this while Seven Day Queen still ranks last. Has anyone heard of this? Is it legit?

The official rating is either AGB or TNMS. That 2049 thing is likely a rating game targeting ppl in their 20s-40s, but it's not official like the other 2 so can't say it is legit either. Let's just accept the truth while mostly ppl wreck about Ruler, Knetz definitely still love it ( mostly because Yoo Seung Ho and Kim So Hyun? ). For me i just enjoy whatever show i like despite it's rating or any bad reviews. Well, sometimes i do hope it can get a good rating as well.

It's clear that Ruler wins hands down against SDQ in terms of ratings. As a fan of the latter, I'd be happy just to see the ratings go higher and not decrease.

SP's ratings are closer to Ruler and it seems like it is more discussed in Korea social media than Ruler so maybe that's why this 2049 thing was brought up.

Yes, regarding Ruler ratings ; maybe this type of drama is old folk favourite? Old folk = doesn't do social media.

Most commenters of Ruler are just diehard fans of YSH and KSH. Thus, all the praise were just about them and not the (disappointing) production they're in.
It's really at their disadvantage since the showrunners think they're doing great with all the positive comments, when they're actually not.

8

Of course it's legit. It's just a particular demographic they're getting and adding the streaming and social media buzz (which is how they calculate CPI).

It's the most important data for advertisers. This is the reason why some American shows get cancelled even with good overall ratings, they're doing poorly in the most important demographic.

Simply Put Ratings not converted into sales and adding more into the costs of companies. That's how online advertising goes too. You can see how much annoying pop-ups have become the norm now.

The 40+ demographic is the largest (in most places), has the most purchasing power and largest amount of disposible income and time. So the under 40 demographic isn't necessarily the most important one. The main attractiveness of that demographic is the opportunity to use initial purchases to develop brand affinity. But given how the practice of brand loyalty has eroded in that demographic, trying to cater to it doesn't count for much.

Yeah I think it's the Yoo Seung Ho & Kim So Hyun effect.. after all I'm still watching it for Seung Ho despite having zero interest in the storyline... what else can a fangirl do?!

I just have a problem with "It's not official". Because it's as "official" as AGB/TNMS, CPI and other popularity indices SoKor is churning out. It's just another rating measure. I get that AGB/TNMS gets recorded on here and other places but the 2049 is more popular among advertisers (the company I work with uses it too) since it covers non-traditional viewing habits of consumers.

Not a fan of both, but i believe that 2049 thingy is not official. It's true. More popular = official? As far as i know no drama were rated based on 2049 thingy till now. It's just a rating that calculates viewers from 20s to 40s, and it's not even clear if the results is legit. And importantly those broadcast station only take credits from nielsen and tnms, because yes it's the official rating for SK.

Every show has it. It just didn't pop up out of the blue for SP. They release it regularly. It's just significant now because a show with lower national ratings, came at the top. That's why it was reported in the first place.

And of course, the only widely known one is also the overall rating for SoKor, even the Seoul ratings are rarely mentioned. I just don't like "official" as an adjective for AGB/TNMS, "widely-used" is better.

Suspicious Partner has been beating Ruler in 2049 ratings for a couple of weeks now. No surprise there since SP is really much more popular and dominates conversation in SoKor sites.

It's not just fans though (just see articles on Naver about this Wed-Thurs competition). It's also not just about ratings anymore since we're living with non-traditional viewing habits. So of course, these non-traditional charts which also measure streaming and online buzz are important.

It's a mere consolation to SP fans, yes. But it also says much about how Ruler isn't the sensation it was promoted to be.

Well, nobody is disputing that Ruler is at the top of its time slot but with the amount of promotion and hype, I'm pretty sure MBC is not expecting a mere average of 12%. It's also quite a downer to be overshadowed in 2049 ratings and other popularity charts by a live-shooting romcom which premiered with little buzz and less beloved stars.

FYI, Ruler was a low budget program despite the amount of promotion and hype. While MBC may hope for a better rating for sure, it wasn't overshadowed. And girl, Ji Chang Wook isn't less beloved!

Ruler is a sageuk, of course it cost more than SP or any contemporary show. Sageuk also doesn't have product placement to recoup easily. It may not be Moon Lovers-level of budget, but it still costs more. I wasn't even talking about the budget here, just the mediaplay it received, and is receiving.

And girl~, I love JCW too but I can admit that he is not the top-tier leading man international fans think he is in Korea. He has yet to headline a hit show there. YSH is waaay more loved, first as the nation's little brother and now as an actor who already served the military when he was 19. /END

3. Nam JiHyun
4. Oh YeonSeo
5. Park SeoJoon

I think Ruler win that ratings but SP win everything else.

Brand reputation = media, communication, and community. Maybe people watch Ruler live, watch SP later but they talk about SP more. YSH & KSH drop few places compare to last month. Despite lower ratings SP has a lot of PPL. When the drama success, the channel make money. With brand reputation, the actors make money.

2

Success drama = make money.
Yes, i get that. But, brand reputation can make actors make money? How so? I thought it was just like some popularity results thing?

0

Oh, and for PPL. Where in the world sageuk drama can get any PPL?
Well, maybe a hanbok PPL if there's one.

0

I said Ruler wins in rating, SP wins in everything else. What are you trying to prove?

0

brand reputation = popularity = CFs = money = paid more next drama

2

What I know is brand reputation is the RESULT OF and not a FACTOR in the popularity or income of an actor. If an actor makes more money from CF or becomes more successful because of a drama, those boost his reputation and not the other way around.

The equation is:
Successful drama (rating)+ no.of CFs+reliability (can draw audience+other factors=BRAND REP. So brand rep doesn't bring in money. CF and drama do.

5

JCW's management is really working very hard and him as well... 2 yrs of no income is not a joke.. So it's a good farewell for him before he serves in the military... Other than I find SP's plot interesting but the romance is so cheesy and unreal... They are just lucky enough that they aired first together with non sense Ruler... and korea is missing out SDQ--which really derserves the throne for wed-thurs slot... But it's okay, give that freaking popularities to the newbies.. Unfortunately qualities are now compromised..

2

we are comparing Ruler and CP here

this is last month
1. Park Hae Jin
2. Ji Chang Wook
3. Park Sung Woong
4. Yoo Seung Ho
5. Kim So Hyun
6. Nam Ji Hyun
7. Kim Min Jung
8. Yoo Ah In
9. Chae Jung An
10. Chae Soo Bin

so even the rating of SP is lower but Nam Ji Hyun has been increased greatly while Ruler has been decreased. the actors above them are not really more popular but the drama/reputation has been more well received

1

I think whether Brand Reputation brings in more viewers isn't really the point though? People certainly don't watch dramas based on that stuff, but rather the results can be used to indicate a certain drama's popularity if the stars from it top the list while it's airing. For example, I'm pretty sure I remember Park Bo-gum and Kim Yoo-jung doing this during Moonlight's run (lol, mostly remember because Jo Jung-seok made it into the top 3 and I was proud, hehe!). So, really, it's simply another way to see how much buzz a drama is generating, other than ratings.

I think @sojusommelier explains it pretty well!

Brand reputation shall be use to gauge an Actor popularity. So for future project, it can be use to determine an actor popularity. The more popular the actor the more chance of getting new cf/project /drama/movie.. however JCW is going to MS soon this may not benefit him much now but it surely put him at the same level (almost same level) with actor such as KSH, SJK, PBG ..
to top the brand reputation chart he has to be the talk of the town.. the hype now .. and the irony is SP is not the no 1 (tnms and abg rating).

Basic ratings are only one, very simplistic, measure of a show's success. Even in the US, the makeup of the audience (and how it matches to the ad profile) is a huge factor. Online viewing numbers also really impact how well a show is performing for a network.

I love the show but my hopes faded this week. It's not because the show is getting worse but rather the ratings didn't increase significantly when the adults appear.

I got a feeling that either Ruler is the type of saeguk that the Koreans love or YSH especially YSH-KSH pairing are huge draws. From the comments I've read elsewhere, many are complimenting on YSH's good looks and acting, they don't care about the quality of the story.

the thing is ruler offers what saguek's are meant to offer - romance, politics, thriller.. all of that

SP: i started watching it a day before.. marathoned 24 episodes.. and it is quite a regular show.. mix of elements that are on air back to back..

SDQ: publicized heavily as romance... and from what i read in the comments here, politics is still not in the front and definitely does not have a thriller/,ystery to it..

So i would also guess that Ruler was bound to lead...
the fact that ruler is not a smash hit is what you should consider.. which means ruler does not have awesome content.. or and .. the young leads are not exactly the main draw ... its just being the kind of saguek that it is.. is leading

I am watching Ruler mainly because it is type of sageuk that I prefer, and not because of any actor as I'm not a huge fan of any. But I admit, if it is not because of Yoo Seung Ho, and his character is played by some mediocre actor , maybe I've stopped watching already. Even both second leads are weak. I am also quite disappointed that Heo Jun Ho is not a villain that I can hate wholehartedly because he just doesn't get enough materials for it.

Don't get me started on how Heo Jun Ho is wasted in Ruler. After watching him in Beautiful Mind, I was looking forward to Dae Mok. As a character, he has totally lost his sting. It's like the villain gone lazy or bored with the good guys who aren't posing any challenge.

It almost got the 7% I hoped for on Wed so I was extra bummed when it fell back to 6%. It really seems like it'll be staying in this range. I'm just praying it won't fall below and hit 5% again.

I wish the ratings for Wed-Thurs were like the shows on Mon-Tues because everything would hurt a little less, lol. It's just hard having two favorites losing in the ratings to a show that's disappointed me so much. I've always gotten over low ratings pretty easily in the past, but, in those situations, I always got why a certain show was leading beyond just the star-power. I have a really hard time understanding why both 7DQ and SP haven't been able to attract more of an audience like the losing shows on Mon-Tues.

Re Fight My Way and My Sassy Girl: to give a fair comparison of their ratings (if you can ever call a ratings comparison fair), you'd have to either split Fight My Way into two parts, or average the ratings of the split My Sassy Girl eps. I'm not sure how to find the ratings of the second half of Fight My Way, but the average of My Sassy Girl (11 and 12) would surely be 9.5? Still verrrrry close, but not quite number 1.

(On a related note, I do wish they'd just call the eps, say, episode 1 part 1 and part 2 [or a and b] rather than changing the numbering. What's the point?)

Thanks, Heads!

Honestly, I am not only surprised that My Sassy Girl overtook FMW, I am surprised that it actually rose at all! After reading the knetz comments for the premiere week, I was quite sure it would sink to 5% or worse. FMW on the other hand got stronger after Whisper ended.

I think part of the reason is that MSG actually got better. It is still fluff but things are making more sense and the humor is well, let's just say acquired. It could also be due to the star power of Joo Won and Oh Yeon So. There's been quite a lot of compliments showered on them.

I won't bet on MSG getting far ahead of the pack though, it might even drop back to second or who knows Lookout might be the dark horse. Most likely, it would be a close contest among the three.

You're right. No one is holding huge star power in this drama. Lee Si Young and Kim Young Kwang both probably quite similar in term of popularity. All casts probably are familiar actors for the audiences, not some fresh faces except maybe Key as he doesn't have many drama but he is an idol.

Lookout is a show with less buzz but ppl keep watching for the drama itself and the plot is also easier to gain audiences imo. For me Lee Si Young and the trio together with the plot so far are enough to make me stay until the end. My only worry if there will be enough material until the end.. Hopefully this show will be consistent and won't have many filler episodes just to insert some romance plot for eg.

4

I love how you are rooting for Lookout because it is the underdog -perhaps exercising your own particular brand of vigilante justice?

6

@seralovestteobokki Are you watching Lookout? I lost track of your dramas ?. Somehow I had this impression that you can't stand Kim Young Kwang.

I can't agree more with you about the drama gaining viewers with its storyline rather than buzz. Lee Si Young may not be the best actress but I just like her. She's so different from most.

2

@kimbapnoona I have no such noble notions. I just don't watch shows for an actor even though I do anticipate his/her projects. If it's a dud, then it is, no matter my fave is in it. I'd probably end up ranting more, LOL.

It also happens that almost none of my faves are very popular ?

3

@outofthisworld Tbh yes, I can't stand him. I was OK with him until I saw him in D-day and now I don't care about him anymore lol. ?

I think I'm watching a lot. The ones I'm really watching Lookout, MSG, Ruler, The Best Hit, Forest, one daily, and also Father Is Strange ? I do watch two other weekend drama sometimes if I read positive comments on it. lol. Still need to find time to start on Duel, wanted to start this weekend but I was occupied with other things. sigh.

1

@seralovestteobokki was KYK dreadful in D -Day? I was considering whether to watch that drama because of you know who ?

0

I love Son Chang-min (the king) and Oh Yeon-seo in sageuks. I kept coming back for them.

Son's role in "Shin Don" was written for Song Kang-ho but he stepped in and filled it like it was written for him.

Oh Yeon-seo is pretty much at home in this genre since "King Sejong the Great."
It's over the top with her character but her relationship with her father and the mystery behind her mother keeps me interested.

I really liked SP because I tend to lean toward romcoms a bit more but I've got to say recent episodes frustrated me with the lack of communication and noble idiocy. I didn't think I would like SDQ, because I've been off sageuks for a long time, but I found myself strangely drawn to each episode and even liking Yeonsangun, who I'd originally thought I'd really dislike. No show is flawless, it's just everyone preference.

1

Soompi drama threads can be a mix bag. I've participated in some very good threads where difference in opinions are accepted and intelligent discussions are held. On the flip side, there are also threads whereby users with opposing/minority opinions are 'bullied' into silence. What's usually left are only people singing high praises of the drama or repeatedly posting screenshots of their bias or some swoonworthy scenes.

Dramabeans however imperfect is still more tolerant of opposing views. For Ruler recap, majority are those who find the drama very flawed. But those like you who are entertained by the show and still enjoying it are still free to voice your opinion. You can even post as an unregistered user which you are doing.

No one will tell you that you are flouting Dramabeans rules because there is none with regards to stating opinions be it a rant or rave. There is nothing wrong to say you love a drama others dislike or bash a drama which others love. Even if you were to repeat it 10 times.

Just as beanies can 'attack/bash' your favorite drama, you can also 'defend' it.

10

I was hoping to see any beanie who are actually interested to discuss the plot of Ruler but I haven't found you in the recap thread.
Recap for epi 23-24 will be up next so @Lulla & @heera I'll see you there ?

I didn't know Soompi recapping Ruler too lol. I am not so often visiting there, sometimes go to read news / articles - esp they often publish casting news for eg faster than DB.

1

@seralovestteobokki Soompi doesn't recap dramas like how DB does. What they have in some drama threads are users who do live recap as they stream the drama.

1

@outofthisworld
Ermm, yes i still enjoy the drama despite its flaws. But the way you say it, "You can even post as an unregistered user which you are doing." sounds like i'm such a coward for voicing my opinion? I don't have any acc here nor do i afraid that beanies will bash me because of different opinion. If you read my comment up there, I said about being a silent reader in soompi as well. Why? Because making an account for unrelated work is a hassle for me.
And yes, soompi got it flaws as well but I feel better to read something that match with my opinion that's why i went there. No offence though :)

@Sera The Miss Temper
Unfortunately I've stopped reading Ruler recaps here, so see you on another thread maybe :D

@heera
I don't think outofthisworld meant any offence. I understand her saying "You can even post as an unregistered user which you are doing." as pointing out an advantage of Dramabeans compared to forums that you can post your opinions without having to register an account just for that purposes. With or without an account, we're all anonymous in the sense that no one here knows our true identity, and our comments will get downvotes and upvotes just like everyone else. It really has nothing to do with cowardice or bravery. Of course it's ultimately your choice to take or drop the suggestion.

3

I dropped Ruler same reason that I stopped watching mirror of the witch. KSH looks too young or should I say childish compared to YSH. Like I felt kim sae ron looked so innocent next to YSY on MOTW, that I had to drop it despite the fact that the drama looked so pretty on screen. And it had a good storyline too. But anyway YSH is a very good actor no doubt, you would keep looking at him whenever he's on screen, that's how strong his screen presence is, compared to him, the other actors don't have that impact, I must say.

I dropped ruler after 4 episodes, I really love suspicious partner but this week's episodes kind of slowed down. Or maybe comparing with seven day queen, I am realising I like it a teeny bit less. Because for me, seven day queen is a solid show, all the actors are knocking it out of the park, it's so beautiful to look at and the writing is on point, also it pulls at your heart, it actually deserves more ratings. So, I think in jealousy incarnate fashion, I like seven day queen 51% and suspicious partner 49%, lol.

For me, 7DQ is Hwa-Shin just oozing charisma in every front and SP is the adorable Jung-won whom I want to snuggle with all day.

Yesss, I'm right with you on these 2 shows right now!

SP still has the chance to pick back up because it has always had such a wacky charm for me since the beginning. So as long as it doesn't become too much of a downer after its recent turn and our lawyer gang really come together to take HS down, I think it could have another upturn after these slow eps.

But Seven Day Queen has been so lovely and consistent all the way through and manages to make me wonder how everything will unfold, despite the plot already having a set end within history. That takes truly great writing, directing, and acting!

I personally prefer 7DQ to Ruler. SDQ is rather early into its run so my opinion of the show might change in the future, but I hold the first five episodes of 7DQ in higher regard than the first five episodes of Ruler. SP is a different genre so it's hard to compare, but I'm in only for the crime aspect so as far as that goes it's still interesting to me.

Because SP started earlier, I decided to watch that actively as it aired and SDQ on days when I've spare time, but I wonder which I would have chosen to watch actively if they'd premiered on the same day! It's hard to compare, yes, because it's 2 different genres, and I'm also surprised to find that I'm more interested in the crime aspect than the romance, which is a complete first for me.

I hope SDQ keeps up, because I've found myself strangely drawn to each episode despite finding Chaekyung's character a little on the annoying side at first. I was yawning throughout Ruler and couldn't bring myself to continue after 2 episodes.

I understand what you mean. I'm wondering too because Hello Monster got me hooked in all aspects - the romance, the brotherly bond, and the mystery/ crime. SP pales in comparison, but I must get closure to all those murders and need to see the culprit brought to justice, so I'm sticking around XD.

I didn't think much of the young actors in 7DQ in the first ep to be very honest. Chae-Kyung however grows on me fast and Yeok up next, and now I'm having difficulty moving on from them :P.

I found Ruler quite interesting and fast-paced earlier on, though I must say I wasn't much into all the PSH & poison stuff. I was indignant at it for its treatment of the main characters, and in recent episodes even the plot suffers greatly judging from the recaps. I still hope for it to get good ratings and buzz however because I understand this project will add to the resume of YSH and KSH, and I sincerely hope they'll continue to get good projects regardless of what I think about Ruler.

I'm actually enjoying the romance more in SP than IRY. So for me it beats it in that department, while IRY had more compelling thriller elements. Both have the great cast/character chemistry that draws me in every week though so my love is pretty even for them :) I do think IRY came together slightly better, but if SP can do something satisfying with the cat & mouse game that's started, I may change my opinion.

4

@chandler
That's fine :D I can sort of understand where you come from. I must say the main characters in both shows are all interesting and they have great chemistry together, not just romantic spark. If there's something SP beats IRY for me it's the humour because I absolutely adore CEO Byun, Chief Bang and EH (well practically the whole law firm when they're together). I actually enjoyed JCW and NJH's interactions a lot until recently where I've got a feeling that the show has been trying a little too hard to sell their romance while they've got pretty natural chemistry. If I've got to pin point it, it's that scene where Bong-Hee said to JW that they'd start 'that relationship'. His reaction suddenly reminded me of that specific K2 scene where he did a fist pump on seeing Yoona finding a ramen pack (which, erm, brought back not-so-pleasant memory to put it lightly). Even I myself find it weird (of me to have that reaction) but that one short moment pretty killed the mood for me sadly ?.

IRY on the other hand didn't have chemistry that sparked between the leads, that I agree with many other followers of the series. Yet the scene where Ji-An asked Lee Hyun to go to a movie felt cute and genuine, especially on her part, and that sealed the deal for me. Well I must say I find myself weird when typing everything out, because just one moment could make or break my enjoyment of the romance element.

As for the crime aspect, both shows got me hooked and I can't really rank one above the other as something I prefer. While it's not the most brilliantly told mystery, what I enjoy more is the show's exploration of the criminal's psyche. IRY feels richer because there were four characters contributing to the psychological picture (including Lee Hyun's daddy). Hyun-Soo is hard-carrying the crime aspect but I'm looking forward to the explanation of his background story and way of thinking.

0

@maskros

Aw, that's too bad. See, I know exactly what K2 moment you're talking about and it had the exact same effect on me because it was out-of-character and made little sense in the moment. It ruined the romance right then and there.

But Ji-wook is a fully-fleshed out character to me and that reaction felt completely in-tune with what he was experiencing at that moment. I admit, it was a bit extra, but I don't mind this show being a bit extra when it has the more grounded character moments to back it up. For example, that one moment was a bit fluffy, but the scenes leading up to that were so on-point that I didn't mind it. I also was too focused on how much I loved how little drama went into them getting together, how she accepted him in the most awkward way possible as he was stepping out of the shower. Haha, that just worked for me.

They IRY couple grew on me also though :D They just didn't have that crack factor or a whole lot of romantic chemistry.

I also do still find the crime aspect pretty interesting for the reasons you mentioned, but want more of the assured execution we got in eps 7-10.

YSH my favorite actor is doing a great job with the character regardless of the writing and I am going to continue to watch. Dots or doctors bored me to the core, while they are some of the most successful drama rating wise, whereas gods gift 14 days or I remember you faired poorly in rating, but those dramas are gems considering how strong the plots were. It just makes me feel good for the actors who work hard for their projects. End of the day, it must make an effect on them.

Dabong aka YSY rocks hahah. .plus the grandfather and ma sook (was it) are so cute together. Same goes for mc drill, wan seung and ji hoon. I have no idea honestly, but goblin or reply series were all Friday series drama, plus producers too which came on KBS, and all of them had scored double digits. What I read that, the best hit airs much later at night, so that must be what's affecting the rating? I don't expect big numbers, but at least it should have been 7-8% :S. Lol this reminds me of the time when in producers, CTH's director was dreading lower ratings like approximately 5% and which is actually happening to his own show right now.

"Producers" aired earlier. I think 10pm KST. And of course, it also had a star-studded cast. I like how lowkey Best Hit progresses. I hope the Friday rating improves, but I think that's their highest (for Friday) so far.

I hope Yoon Son-ha's controversy won't take much toll on the show. I mean, you know there are people who leave mean comments online and wanted her out of the show, but they don't really contribute to the ratings.

The Best Hit's airing time is 11 pm, and the last drama in the same time slot was The Producer (2015) but Producer's airing time was 9.15pm. The only other drama which is airing at the same time is Circle (Mon-Tues 11pm) and it's on cable. Even tvn drama prior to Forest of Secrets which is now on Sat-Sun slot was aired earlier than 11pm.

I am rooting for the the rating to keep increasing but for now I'm quite satisfied with what they got.Maybe if they scheduled it to at least one hour earlier, the rating can be higher.

Oh God, Forest of secrets is such a good show!!!!

I knew in my heart that i was going to love it, that nothing could go wrong with this writer and this cast and boy did it level up to my expectations!!!
It's my 1st time watching Jo Seung Woo and Bae Doo Na in anything and they completely own their character and are delivering a perfect performance.
I must admit that Jo Seung Woo is stealing the show but the plot and the writing make it something totally necessary and logical. And the others actors are not robbed: they are all served in a way that make them shine.

I'm loving the pace too: despite having a lot of twists, the show takes really its time to introduce the characters and to explain what they feel and why, and to make their interactions real and fullfilling.
The music is so perfect for the show: only instrumentals that complete the atmosphere of the scene, emphasize the tension or help define a character. I can't wait to have the ost!

The drama is clearly on the level of Misaeng and Signal and i'm so grateful for that....

I feel like an addict: i just want more!

This is a one-man show, jo seung woo is hard carrying the show no doubt. As you said the story is written that way so I'm not complaining, even the rookie hoobae got more screen time than bae doona on ep 3, but I felt it was necessary for the story to move. I just love JSW's expressionless face, and I feel rather than emotionless.. he's much driven by a good conscience, he's like those type of people who would rather not participate in useless talks and rather do the job on their own. The BGM is better on the latest episode and I agree with the reviewer who said it could end up being the sleeper hit of the year. Though we did have a couple of mystery show this year like tunnel, voice [ I have yet to watch both], so I'm much happy with having more of them on the watchlist.

It's the best show of the year: those 3 episodes have seal the deal for me.

Exactly, I really like what the director is doing with the silence and the pacing of the drama. The prosecutor and our female detective are like two opposite poles hard at work but apart from these two, everyone else seems like a suspect, which perfectly complements the title of the drama 'strangers'. I love the fact that you mentioned misaeng btw, absolutely love how we have these occasional zoom-ins of the prosecutor's face, his eyes almost always seem like absorbed in calculating the backstories.
I checked out the writer and she seems to have only written for films until now. Which probably explains the different take on the same old mystery genre. Maybe that's why at times I feel like I'm watching a film, not a drama.

Are drama rating typically lower during May/June because of examination period?

Dramas that are aired during summer holidays and winter season seemed to have higher ratings. Similarly, weekend dramas seemed to have higher ratings as well, particularly the Saturday and Sunday episodes.

So the ratings of the dramas air on Mon/Tue and Wed/Thursday are not too bad. But I don't see huge difference either.

Currently I am only following SP. I think the story plot can move faster in order to keep audience's interest. But the leading couple is fun to watch. Their BTS are even more funny. My hopeful theory for Seven Day Queen' ratings is a mix of its late start and the fact that it's based on a historical tragedy. My guess is that since its summer people want lighter fare or something with a happy ending . Like how Hollywood always puts out their heavier films around fall and winter, my theory is that people just want something happy in summer. Cause I think of all the shows out there SDQ is the only one where the audience knows coming in that they're headed for heartbreak. I know that's what gave me slight pause before starting it. It could just be me grasping at straws but I just hope they don't cut the length and I just really reallllly want YWJ to have a hit under his belt cause he's seriously underrated.

Ruler - Disappointed with the plot.. Disappointed with YSH - He frowned a lot ... sad frown, angry frown, surprised also frown .. he looked fake .. different when he acted in I miss You. In rule you can see he is acting ... he doesn't blend with the character and the facial expression is just too much .. he should tone down the frowning. As for the plot - I am getting bored. Same goes to 7DQ - the first 2 ep was so good. The child actors were ossem ... I love LDG charisma ... unfortunately no chemistry between YWJ and PMY. The adult OTP introduction scenes were a bit rush .. so sudden that I can't get into the mood and the kiss was so not necessary .. it's a pathetic way to try to increase the rating .. no every kiss scene - high rating. .. Still watching both ruler and 7dq - let see if they get any better ..

My favourite right now is SP ... SP ruleeeeeeee ... JCW is the king .. the pace is just nice - not too fast and not too slow .. the thriller and romance well balanced ... the chemistry is DAEBAK ,, Thank god the noble idiocy period lasted less than 1 episode .. THANK GOD - that was the only set back ... so SP help JCW to top the Reputation Brand chart ... no 1 - more cf = more money = more famous - more demand. BTW - The TV rating was not that big - between 1-3% gap .. but glad it is on top of that 2049 rating which include streaming and other media - I guess that the reason JCW top the reputation brand chart despite not being no 1 on the TV rating chart ...

about 7 dq??.. kiss so soon??.. don't you think 5 yrs is enough for longingness and feeling still lingers?... It's a kiss of misunderstanding, jealousy and longingness.... And their chemistry is pretty decent and fluttering ... than SP who just never dated, yet they had a provocative kiss??.. LOL...
Anyway, SP is just lucky enough to be aired first with non sense Ruler and K-viewers are too lazy to check out the new shows out (especially a great QUALITY drama)... And that's great that JCW is getting lots of recognition cause it's not a joke that there's no income for 2 yrs..... JCW will forever be Healer!!..

Very happy for FMW and SP. I am catching up on 7DQ but I am not completely sold on it yet. Not sure why. Will need ti catch up on Lookout and Ruler as well. Although since I am on the fence with 7DQ I am afraid I will not really warm up to Ruler either.

I just realized that Yoo Seung Ho, Park Min Young and Ji Chang Wook were co/stars in the past:

*Yoo Seung Ho - Ji Chang Wook in Warrior Baek Dong Soo
*Yoo Seung Ho - Park Min Young in Remember
*Ji Chang Wook - Park Min Young in Healer

I wonder how it feels to have competing shows when they were once costars?

I tried watching Thief, it is pretty bad. Pure makjang and severe overacting.

As a fan of all three wed/thur dramas and all the leads as well *sigh*, I believe that 7DQ has lower ratings because it started late(all my speculation though). It's rating will probably be higher when it reaches the halfway mark(Ep 9) Hoping all three can reach double-digit ratings. Btw, do you guys think 7DQ will stick with it's original(history) ending or will it go another route? Hopefully it's the latter though. ?

I'm an SP fan.. its the only drama on wed-thu that I'm updated.. SDQ and Ruler, I downloaded them but I get lazy watching them.. lol.. It didn't sustain me.. I like rom-com than those melodrama.. so much angst.. I'd rather laugh than cry while watching..

Among historical dramas " Ruler -Master of the Mask" so far is the best, the story line, all actors and actresses were great, both good and evil ones. The writer for this drama should get a credit for this one, comparing to My Sassy girl, I prefer the Ruler. Best of the best this year so far
