Suspicious Partner: Episodes 13-14
by LollyPip
I love this picture — it just so perfectly illustrates Bong-hee and Ji-wook’s relationship right now. There’s a lot of denial floating around, particularly in Ji-wook’s case as he does his best to ignore both his feelings and his instincts. His mixed-up emotions could lead him into some very bad decisions if he’s not careful, so he’s going to have to get his head on straight if he wants to catch a killer and protect the woman he cares about.
EPISODE 13 RECAP
Bong-hee frets outside Ji-wook’s house, worried when he’s late returning from taking Yoo-jung home. When he finally arrives, she flings herself into his arms, saying that she was scared he wouldn’t come home. Overcome with emotion, she unintentionally confesses: “I like you.”
Ji-wook almost hugs her back, but he lets his arm fall as tells her not to like him. Bong-hee backs up and asks why not, but he only stares at her sadly. Bong-hee breathes that she had so many things she wanted to ask, but she knows that he won’t answer them.
As Ji-wook looks into her tear-filled eyes, he wonders if he’ll regret this decision later. Bong-hee admits that she already regrets her confession, though she clarifies that she doesn’t regret her feelings for him.
She asks Ji-wook for a favor — to let her hug him one more time before she ends her one-sided love. He pulls her close before she even finishes her sentence, and they stand in each other’s arms for a long time.
In the morning, Ji-wook is startled half to death to find Bong-hee sitting on the kitchen floor holding spoons over her eyes. HAHA. She explains that the cold spoons are for her swollen eyes, since she slept sooo much.
Ji-wook starts to get her a cold towel, but Bong-hee says that if he’s going to ask her not to like him, then he should stop being nice. Ji-wook obeys, though he looks disappointed when she tells him that she’ll “reset” back to when she was just his intern.
Ji-wook takes a shaky breath and says that he’ll do as she says. When she shuffles off, he looks like he wants to kick himself, as if he’s already regretting his decision to stop things with her.
The rest of the guys show up to work to find that Ji-wook has laid out a huge breakfast. They wonder what’s up with him, and CEO Byun accuses those two of being up to something last night. Turns out, he’d fallen asleep while working, and when he’d tried to leave, he’d witnessed Ji-wook and Bong-hee hugging outside.
Bong-hee says that his eyes must be getting old, because nothing happened. Ji-wook backs her up, and though they convince CEO Byun that he saw it wrong, neither Eun-hyuk nor Chief Bang look the least bit fooled.
After breakfast, they go over the evidence from the theft and murder case. Evidence includes Hyun-soo’s shoe print inside the house, a lost button, and a neighbor’s eyewitness testimony that she saw Hyun-soo leaving the house near the time of the murder.
Hyun-soo’s criminal record is pretty bland, just a minor assault incident in which he was trying to save a woman from an attacker. The team’s biggest concern is the missing murder weapon, a knife around thirteen centimeters in length. That seems familiar to Ji-wook, since it sounds just like the knife that killed Hee-joon years ago, but he keeps it to himself.
Bong-hee says that there’s nothing proving that Hyun-soo is the murderer, though Ji-wook says there’s also no evidence that he’s not. Bong-hee is bent on confirming Hyun-soo’s alibi, deciding to find the couple who were having a party at the bar where Hyun-soo says he went on the day of the murder.
The bar has a wall where patrons can post pictures, notes, and other things of interest. She’d been there and found a photo of the couple in question, and had stuck a note to their picture asking them to call her or Ji-wook.
Yoo-jung and Ji-hae also discuss the case, having determined that Hyun-soo’s motive was money. Yoo-jung is particularly convinced that Hyun-soo is the killer, having caught him cracking a smile after her interrogation when he thought she wasn’t looking.
Ji-hae doesn’t really care — all she cares about is winning her first case against Bong-hee. They stop to nod respectfully to District Attorney Jang when he passes them in the hall, and he turns to watch them leave, looking thoughtful.
Eun-hyuk finds Bong-hee crouching outside looking miserable, and he asks if she wants to talk. She asks him to speak gently, saying that she feels like she’s filled with water and will burst with the slightest poke. (Poor thing, that feeling sucks.) She says she’ll be okay as long as she doesn’t cry in front of Ji-wook, and Eun-hyuk crouches next to her companionably, understanding how she feels.
Meanwhile Chief Bang asks Ji-wook what happened between him and Bong-hee, but Ji-wook just gives him that thousand-yard stare, then assigns him a long list of evidence-gathering tasks. HA, that’ll teach him to pry.
Ji-wook steps outside to find Bong-hee and Eun-hyuk still talking, and he kicks Eun-hyuk aside jealously. Bong-hee offers to go with him to investigate the house, making Eun-hyuk’s eyes bug out at her, but she tells herself to be strong and follows Ji-wook.
Eun-hyuk says quietly that doing your best to stop your feelings doesn’t do anything to change the other person, thinking about Yoo-jung. He smacks his own head like Bong-hee always does, telling himself to wake up.
Near the chef’s house, Ji-wook and Bong-hee discover that all of the security cameras are out of service. They find a working one down the street and decide to get a copy of its footage.
Bong-hee is impressed by how hard Ji-wook is working to clear Hyun-soo, but he makes it clear that he’s doing it for himself, so that he can defend Hyun-soo fairly. He sends Bong-hee to climb into the chef’s house through a window and let him in.
The house is ransacked, as you’d expect for a robbery, but Ji-wook notices several valuables that were left behind. He also sees the wires left behind from the framed picture, wondering why a thief would take a huge photo but leave behind an expensive watch.
They scramble for cover when they hear someone entering the house, since they’re here illegally. They hide behind the kitchen island, but a hand grabs Ji-wook’s collar and yanks him up. He fights back, slamming his assailant against the wall, then he realizes that it’s Yoo-jung.
Flustered, Ji-wook claims to be here legitimately and tries to make a cool exit. But Yoo-jung stops him and asks to speak to him alone for a few minutes, threatening to press charges against Bong-hee unless he complies. He agrees to five minutes, and the puppy-dog eyes he turns on Bong-hee are more than she can resist.
Yoo-jung reminds Ji-wook of Hyun-soo’s previous assault conviction as she hands him a packet of photos of the victim, who was beaten viciously. Yoo-jung says that if onlookers hadn’t stopped him, Hyun-soo would have killed the man. She asks why Ji-wook is defending the exact type of person he’d previously have prosecuted.
Ji-wook goes to see Hyun-soo, showing him the pictures of his assault victim. He says that he’s starting to think that Hyun-soo killed the chef, which puts Hyun-soo on his guard. Ji-wook continues that the assault case looks premeditated, almost as if he wanted to kill that person, too.
Hyun-soo admits that he wanted to kill the guy, because once he had to watch someone being hurt when he should have been protecting them. He says that he vowed that when he was older and stronger, he wouldn’t let anyone else be a victim like that. So when he saw this man assaulting a woman, he did what he had to do.
While he’s telling Ji-wook all this, Hyun-soo loses his composure entirely, slamming his fist into the photos as if he wants to pummel the man all over again. He rages, eyes rolling as he spits in fury, an entirely different person from the mild-mannered guy he usually appears to be.
Ji-wook says that he believes Hyun-soo, but adds that he doesn’t think Hyun-soo beat the man to stop him from hurting that woman. In Ji-wook’s opinion, this was a punishment. Brushing away a tear, Hyun-soo asks, “What’s wrong with that?” (Shudder.)
Collecting himself and acting like the innocent do-gooder again, Hyun-soo says that he was just trying to help someone when he beat that guy. He apologizes sweetly for losing his temper, and he repeats that no matter what happened before, he didn’t kill that chef because he doesn’t hurt people without a reason.
Back at the house, CEO Byun finds Ji-wook looking downcast. Ji-wook confesses that he hates guilty clients, but he hates innocent clients even more because he’s scared he won’t be able to prove their innocence. CEO Byun says that Ji-wook’s father used to worry about the same things.
Bong-hee, Eun-hyuk, and Chief Bang go out together and get totally sloshed. Bong-hee and Eun-hyuk agree that things would be easier if they were each other’s type, then they wouldn’t both be suffering from one-sided love right now. Okay, these two drunk fools are officially my new favorite thing.
Ji-wook shows up, annoyed with their behavior, but they’re too drunk to do anything but shoot cross-eyed finger-hearts at him. Ji-wook gives up on fussing at them since they’re too inebriated to notice anyway and sends Eun-hyuk home with a designated driver before walking home with Bong-hee happily clinging to him like a monkey.
She’s passed out cold by the time he flops her onto her bed, and Ji-wook takes a minute to put a pillow under her head. He notices how pretty she looks and sits on the edge of her mattress, then he reaches out a hand to touch her face. She turns over in her sleep, evading his touch, which makes him feel strangely rejected.
EPISODE 14 RECAP
Eun-hyuk’s driver wakes him, and he realizes that he provided the wrong address. He apologizes, telling the driver where he actually lives, and as they pull away, he sees Yoo-jung walking home. Awww, he gave her address, didn’t he?
Ji-wook is super cranky with the three drunken idiots the next morning, yelling and slamming things as he issues orders. He sets Chief Bang to find out about the missing portrait and sends Eun-hyuk to the murdered chef’s restaurant, then he fixes his frightening gaze on Bong-hee. Uh-oh.
He screams at her to check every frame of the CCTV footage, and not to come back until she finds something. He tells her that this is her case and to take more responsibility, then he stomps off in a glorious snit.
The trio get on with their tasks, Eun-hyuk having the hardest time as he tries to convince a restaurant employee to talk to him. His persistence (and gorgeous smile) eventually pays off, and he discovers that the deceased chef was a real scumbag. He also learns that the chef’s sister used to clean up all of his messes, and Bong-hee remembers that she’s the one who found his body.
Bong-hee eventually finds something on the CCTV footage, and she and Ji-wook forget their awkwardness as they watch the video, heads bent close together. Ji-wook starts to pat her head, which reminds them both of other times he’s done that, so instead, he just gives her a weird poke in the shoulder.
On the second day of the trial, Ji-hae presents the evidence found at the murder scene, which does seem to point to Hyun-soo. Ji-wook argues that the button and shoe print were left at the scene the day before the murder, when Hyun-soo made a delivery to the house and helped the chef move some furniture. Ji-hae objects that this is conjecture, but Ji-wook fires back that so is their claim that he murdered the chef.
The neighbor is brought in, and she testifies that she saw Hyun-soo leaving the chef’s house near the time of the murder. As charming as can be, Ji-wook asks her to describe Hyun-soo’s clothing on that day, and she particularly notes that he looked slim like he does now, and that he wasn’t carrying a bag. Ji-wook then asks how he managed to steal any valuables.
Several things were reported stolen, including a laptop, gold bars, a camera, and a large portrait. Bong-hee pulls out a bag large enough to carry everything minus the portrait, which seems to prove that Hyun-soo can’t have been the thief. Plus, Ji-wook adds that none of the missing items have been found.
Ji-hae argues desperately that Hyun-soo could have returned later for the valuables, but Ji-wook debunks that theory too, since there was only one set of shoe prints. Bong-hee looks triumphant, and even Hyun-soo grins.
Next, Ji-wook questions the victim’s sister, who found the chef the day after the murder at about 1:00 p.m. She testifies that she called the police immediately after finding the body, but Ji-wook shows CCTV footage of her car leaving the area at 11:13 a.m., two hours before she reported the murder.
Ji-wook asks again what time she discovered the body, and the sister now says that she doesn’t remember. Ji-wook accuses her of killing her brother because she was tired of covering up his messy love life, which he’d told Bong-hee earlier would be a trick to get her to tell the truth.
It works — to avoid being branded a murderer, the sister confesses that she tampered with the murder scene to cover up her brother’s “monstrous acts.” She says that she found him already dead, and that videos of the horrible things he’d done to multiple women were playing on the television. So she set it up to look like a robbery to save her brother’s reputation.
Coldly, Ji-wook asks who saves the reputations of the women her brother violated. Hyun-soo looks up at that, his expression chilling.
Ji-wook is distracted as he and Bong-hee arrive home, and he shuffles upstairs to his office absently. Bong-hee goes up later to ask him something, and she finds him fast asleep sitting up. She decides to loosen his tie to make him more comfortable, so she leans close to carefully untie it.
Just as Bong-hee loosens his tie, Ji-wook’s eyes open, and he stares at her intensely. Bong-hee nervously explains that she was just trying to make him comfortable, but his gaze doesn’t waver in the slightest.
She stands to leave, but he grabs her by the wrist to stop her. Looking up at her with those sad, dark eyes, he apologizes, then asks her to stay for just a few minutes. She nods and sits at his feet, and Ji-wook closes his eyes and goes back to sleep.
Chief Bang comes upstairs in the morning, and he immediately goose-steps right back downstairs when he sees Bong-hee asleep with her head in Ji-wook’s lap. Awww. He even guards the stairs from Eun-hyuk and CEO Byun, growling at them to keep them from disturbing the sleeping beauties.
In light of the tainted evidence, the judge declares Hyun-soo not guilty of murder. Everyone on his team (except Ji-wook) is thrilled, and in the back of the courtroom, we see forensics investigator Chan-ho watching the proceedings.
The team and Hyun-soo go out for drinks to celebrate their new firm’s first victory, though Ji-wook keeps a suspicious eye on Hyun-soo. Chief Bang follows him outside, where Ji-wook says that he just feels uneasy because the real murderer is still out there. Chief Bang reminds him that that’s the prosecution’s job, and they head back inside.
The couple who had the party at Hyun-soo’s regular bar find the note that Bong-hee left, but when they call Bong-hee’s number, she’s singing for the team (horrifically, and against Ji-wook’s advice), and doesn’t hear her phone ring. They call Ji-wook next, so he steps out to meet with them at the bar.
The couple remember a guy drinking alone that night, but when they show Ji-wook a video they took with the boyfriend’s phone, the man behind them isn’t Hyun-soo. Confused, Ji-wook takes a look around the bar, and he notices something on the wall that chills him to the bone.
Among the things that customers have left there, he sees a picture of little girls with balloons, which is exactly what Hyun-soo said that he saw in the park on the day of the murder. There’s also a poster of the movie The Usual Suspects, which Hyun-soo claimed to have almost seen that day, along with the couple’s birthday party pictures.
With growing horror, Ji-wook realizes that Hyun-soo’s entire alibi is right here on the bar wall. He did come here on the day of the murder, but not until later, and he’d seen the items on the wall. So when he was arrested and Yoo-jung asked him what he was doing that day, Hyun-soo had concocted a detailed alibi from the pictures and notes he saw at the bar.
Drunker now, the team discuss Bong-hee’s tone-deafness, and she mentions the song she heard Hee-joon’s killer whistling on the night of his murder. She performs her Whee whee wheeeee song again, and we hear the killer whistling the tune on the day Bong-hee was acquitted. This time we see him there, leaving the courtroom as Bong-hee was surrounded by reporters.
It was Hyun-soo.
He was there when Bong-hee admired the shoes in the store window, and he was also there when Chan-ho was standing over the dead chef’s body and holding the murder weapon. It was Hyun-soo who left the shoes in Bong-hee’s office, and she’d chased out of the building and into the street. And it was Hyun-soo who’d biked past Bong-hee right before she found Hee-joon’s murdered body, whistling that mysterious tune.
He smiles placidly as Bong-hee attempts to whistle the song, confident that nobody will ever recognize it. He even teases Bong-hee, and she tells him that she’ll find the murderer, no matter what.
Stunned by his discovery, Ji-wook walks back to the bar, thinking that those who let a guilty criminal go free are guilty themselves. In a deserted underground walkway, he looks up to see Hyun-soo standing in front of him, smirking triumphantly. He thinks to himself that he’s helped a criminal get acquitted: Jung Hyun-soo.
COMMENTS
Well, damn. Damn damn damn. I was so hoping that Hyun-soo was innocent, but I guess my theory last week was close — he and Chan-ho are a team, working together to commit and get away with murder. Strangely, last week Hyun-soo seemed to be the innocent one and Chan-ho came across as very menacing, but their personalities seem to have flipped. Now it’s Hyun-soo who scares me, while Chan-ho seemed very sad in the few seconds we saw him. It’s eating me up inside — I’m dying to know what these two are up to.
Although I’d guessed that Hyun-soo wasn’t really the soft-spoken guy he seemed to be, witnessing his rage when Ji-wook asked him about the man he assaulted was terrifying. His mention of punishment seems to fit with the Bible verse about rapists deserving to die that was written on the chef’s portrait, and I’m getting an idea of what Hyun-soo and Chan-ho are trying to do. I think that possibly they see themselves as some sort of anti-heroes, protecting the weak from those who harm them by making sure their attackers never hurt anyone ever again. It would explain why Hyun-soo has been following Bong-hee all this time without ever attacking her — maybe in his mind she was the victim, and the person who hurt her by cheating on her, Hee-joon, was righteously punished.
But then Bong-hee began to aggressively seek out Hee-joon’s killer, so Hyun-soo sent her those shoes in an attempt to scare her off his trail (I was right that it was him and not Chan-ho in her office that night). But I don’t think that he has any intention of hurting her, not at this point, because in his mind she’s not deserving of punishment. Let’s hope that she doesn’t do anything to change his mind. I’m also wondering where Chan-ho fits into all this, because he’s definitely involved, but at times he doesn’t look very happy about it. It makes me wonder if he’s the one that Hyun-soo mentioned failing to protect, and why he helps Hyun-soo… are they friends? Brothers? Heck, maybe Chan-ho is the killer and Hyun-soo is the one who cleans up after him. I don’t know, I’m grasping at straws here. But it’s obvious that their relationship is complex and codependent, and that it’s definitely not healthy.
I wasn’t expecting Ji-wook to figure out Hyun-soo’s secret so quickly, but once again, Suspicious Partner carries us speedily from plot point to plot point, giving us plenty of great story to absorb yet never feeling rushed or unfinished. It has to be killing Ji-wook to know he got Hyun-soo off the hook only to discover that his entire alibi was a lie, and I wonder what he’s going to do now that he knows for sure. A person can’t be tried for the same crime a second time after having been found not guilty, not unless definitive proof is found, so it’s very unlikely that Hyun-soo will face charges again for this murder. He’s either going to have to kill again and be found guilty, or Ji-wook is going to have to take the law into his own hands. Neither option seems ideal.
I’m also scared that Ji-wook could do something dangerous if Hyun-soo threatens Bong-hee. He’s so obviously head over heels for her that he’s even admitting it to himself, but he’s scared to start something with her for fear of being hurt again. He’s so wounded that it’s difficult to even look at him when he looks at Bong-hee that way, as if it’s the last time he’ll ever see her. He can refuse to act on his feelings, but he can’t deny them anymore, and I’m scared of what he’ll do if he thinks Bong-hee is in danger. I have no idea what’s going to happen, and I’m both terrified and excited to see where Ji-wook’s horrific discovery will take us next.

He does have a very very creepy smile..and the way he transitions from that sad innocent expression to that cunning grin..shudders. On a side note, Lollypip, be as happy as you can looking at the picture, because I am sure its going to be the other way round pretty soon. Ji Wook is fighting against his own will. Not going to work bro. Some jealousy induced, and then we shall see who clings on to whom; :p

It is the same guy that acted as the CEO's son in Chief Kim. I think he is a rookie actor. He is very talented though. I like how he has a very innocent face but the way he changes between the sincere expression and creepy psychopath. I look forward to seeing how he progresses. This is going to be so interesting. This is giving me 'The Defendant' feels.

Changing from innocent expression to psychopath expression, it was Park Bo Gum'Lee Min' who aced it in I Remember You. Let's see if this actor can become the next PBG. I really enjoyed his hilarious acting in Chief Kim. I'm so excited!!!

This writer is really stringing me on here. I'm enjoying her works so well. It's so similar to I Remember You but so much lighter. I actually have this urge to watch both dramas back to back.

I want him to be innocent because I like him in Chief Kim. Haha. I knew that there was something off about his out-of-place smiles but I didn't expect him as the killer. We already have the killer so I kind of didn't expect that plot twist!
I'm loving how Ji-wook complicates things between him and Bong-hee because of his woundedness. And oh, I can't help being caught in Ji Chang-wook's stares. I love him!

Actually Dong Ha has been in several things. He first popped up on everyone's radar in LAST where he played the head gangster's personal assassin, Praying Mantis. He was SO GOOD. He then went on to pop up in a small part in Glamorous Temptation, as one of the residents on Beautiful Mind (a hilarious fumbling dumbass no less) and then he was on Chief Kim. So now he's back around to scarrrry dude. His real name is Kim Hyung Kyu, you may find his credits split between that and Dong Ha.

Can we take a moment to appreciate that we did, in fact, get a Bong-hee koala hug? That was my first thought when I saw that scene!
Hyun-soo is straight-up scary. Is it bad that I'm excited to get one, maybe even two, legitimately scary villains?

Yes, he seems to have something up his sleeve, which results in him secretly smiling to himself all the time. Now we know he is a team with the forensics guy, but how does the amnesia come into play here? The forensics guy didn't seem pleased that he was acquitted though.

whoa whoa whoa. i want to gush about all the JW and BH angst (and all the LOOKS btwn them) but my head is spinning about our two culprits: "Heck, maybe Chan-ho is the killer and Hyun-soo is the one who cleans up after him." One thing I can't quite fit in is the amnesia angle. Neither CH or HS seem to have amnesia--or am I missing something? HS is definitely guilty, but maybe he manipulates CH to do the actual killing? (Any Agatha Christie fans here? One of her Poirot books is like that: a "killer" who manipulates other people into doing the actual killing).

YESS!! I remember reading an article post K2 where the reporter had speculated that Ji-Wook and Yoo-na are dating based on the way he looks at her in that drama. It's not true of course but the intensity of his gaze when looking at his love interest, be it in Healer, K2, or Suspicious Partner, is such that you can easily believe he is in love! He conveys those feelings, simultaneously vulnerable and passionate, in such a way that it's so easily to believe in his characters! I love that about him!

Yes, JCW's expressions are really on point. They can be intense one minute, and playful the next. I love all his micro-expressions in this show. They are so expressive and telling of his feelings at that point in time.

I agree I think that's an old detail long discarded. I think the twist we got instead was the killer thought she witnessed him, but her contacts were out so she doesn't know who he is. FRANKLY, I like this a lot better. I'm similarly blind without my glasses and it's a much better plot point than stupid old amnesia.

Maybe, it hasnt come to the point that the killer has amnesia, im guessing that something would cause the killer to have amnesia after this?? I dont think the writers would make a mistake and change the storyline. It could be because we are only barely at the first half of the drama, considering its got 40 episodes and many things are not revealed!!!

Thanks for the recap!
-I love how honest BH is able to be about her feelings. My heart was sorta broken (in a good way) by how quick JW was to hug her again when she asked though. BH crying makes me want to hug her too.
-EH is really knocking it out of the park in the friendship area. The scene where EH/BH/Chief Bang got drunk together really sold me on the EH/BH bromance.
-YJ is doing the exact opposite of knocking it out of the park in regards to making me like her. I was so ready to have an interesting, likeable second female lead and I feel sad.
-JW is seriously a charismatic lawyer when he stops his pouty little boy act. That courtroom scene...*fans self*
-BH singing in the bar made me shriek with laughter.
-So y'all were right about HS being the actual killer! Now I'm really interested in whether he's truly an amnesiac and what his relationship is with the forensics guy. Also, did anyone else think the forensics guy almost looked upset when HS was acquitted?
-That epilogue had me in stitches: "You worked hard." "Huh?" "What? I said work hard!"

I don't disagree with you, but I find it hard to call characters one-dimensional, because sometimes people are simple and I wouldn't say there's a definite need for a person to have a relatable backstory/underlying motivations to do things that we don't realize until we watch more (like EH and his awkward laughs). Perhaps YJ's character is really just that - she's just an irresponsible person who only thinks of herself.
I think my issue with YJ is that she's childish and it's hurting everyone around her. When she told JH "what's the use of being sick if there's nobody to take care of me?" I just thought that she'd intended to use her sickness as a pity ploy to make JW come back to her. I don't doubt that her sickness was real, but the fact that she saw it as a way to manipulate his emotions just tells me that she's selfish.
She hurt both him and EH years ago, and she ran away while leaving them both to deal with their emotions and work things out. Now she's back and she wants in again. No guilt, just excuses for her actions.

I actually think YH might have a little more depth than peole are giving her credit for. Yes, she is selfish and she is a little foolish, but shes very self aware. She knows she was being a bad person coming back for JW. For all she knows, BS could be a murderer and yet she's walking the streets. JW was a very different person a few years ago when he was a prosecutor - remember he was the most "hated" since he prosecuted without mercy, and YH can't understand how he's defending someone who so cruelly beat up another man. I'd say she hasn't been given too much screen time yet (which is smart on the writers part), but I don't think she's the regular second lead we are used to. Notice that when she asked for (forced) JW's time, it wasn't to ask for him back again, it was to tell him about the case.

I still find it weird that on her part, it doesn't feel like she had been friends with JW and EH since childhood. I think if they had her value the friendship, it would have made more sense. YJ only cares about the bf/gf relationship and not the friendship-which is weird since in any friends to lovers situation, especially between childhood friends, there is always the fear of harming the friendship if things go south.

I'm going to play devil's advocate a little here...forgive me please...But I just wonder if its possible to argue that YJ is actually complex but doesn't want to be. Doesn't want to let herself be. I am FASCINATED by the fact that she met and liked BH and how conflicted she was about that, briefly. But then when BH's nemesis/YJ's asst told her that BH was likely a murdered, YJ mentioned feeling vindicated. It's like she wants things to be simple so she can feel justified for her past behavior and get JW back. But I wouldn't be surprised if her character's complexity starts to unfold a bit more. I think there is some underlying depth there.

I don't mind YJ's one-dimensional character only because it highlights how complex everyone else is. I think it's just a weak spot in the writing and not intentional, but it's like she's stuck in a cliche k-drama while everyone else is just living their lives.

Initially, I thought Hee-Joon was mistaken for Bong-Hee after she looked out her window and would have seen the murderer dragging a body if she had her glasses on. Earlier, the subway groper said he was in fear of his life because of a similar situation (but naturally, with kdrama law enforcement, no one looked into it), so I thought they were setting that up.

'Initially, I thought Hee-Joon was mistaken for Bong-Hee after she looked out her window and would have seen the murderer dragging a body if she had her glasses on.'
That's what I had in mind before watching this episode too. The question, if that was the case, is why doesn't the killer go after Bong-Hee? They should've known that being framed murderer would push BH on the 'Real-Culprit hunt', yet they (the forensic guy & Hyun-Soo) just keep an eye on her all these years. One even befriends with her.

So far, I'm finding Hyun-soo to be unsettling in such an intriguing way and I finally feel fully invested in the mystery! Oh boy, the stakes just got raised now that JW's found out Hyunsoo is not as innocent as he seems. (They always cast actors who portray creepy criminals so fantastically! I was creeped out in SWDBS, and now I'm creeped out by how psychotic HS seems at one moment, and how gentle he is the next.)
Now that it's clear HS was the real criminal, I'm confused as to how the amnesiac thing works - HS sees himself as a "heroic" being who goes around punishing men who commit sexual crimes. To me that means that if he finds out about a sexual crime, he metes out punishment to the man. Where does the amnesia come in? Does he think he's punishing the person who assaulted his loved one? Or does he commit the murder and then forget that he did it?
On Eun Hyuk: EH continues to tear my heart to pieces every week. When BH told him she would get over her crush and EH muttered that it wasn't so easy, he was obviously talking about his own one-sided love for YJ. Plus all the flashbacks of her looking upset, but holding himself back from going to her... He clearly still loves her a lot, but he can't do anything about it because he wants his friendship with JW back. And he's such a good friend to cheer BH up and sit with her while she talks about her feelings.
On Bong Hee: I love her attitude. She was upset about the rejection, but she took it maturely. She cried, but then she got up and decided the best way was to get over it and move on. I faced a similar situation before when I'd a crush on this person I had to meet every single day. It was impossible to get over it and I was negative all the time. So I understand BH's pain, and I really like how she's so strong about it.
Ahhh but can JW please please please get over his fears soon? I don't want to drag the unnecessary tears and emotionally charged moments! I want them to be cutesy and work on solving the mystery.

My questions:
So who was it the night the molester saw across the window?
Who was it who stared at Bong soon when she was at the window?
Assuming it was the killer, was he dumping a body in a bag somewhere on the roof?
Or was it the forensics guy getting rid of body evidence for his buddy?
Why did the killer stare at Bong Soon? Did he like her? Was he staring at her not because she had caught him in the act of doing something but because he liked her?
Was he aware that the boyfriend was cheating on her?
Did he stalk her?
Did he decide to mete out punishment to the boyfriend because he was angry for Bong Soon?
Does he like Bong Soon?
Did he give her the shoes because he liked her?
Is he going to attempt a relationship with her?

EH has it bad for YJ. He even subconsciously directs the cab driver to YJ's apartment when he is in a drunken state. Ahhhh my puppiessss! It's hard to watch Bong-hee being sad, I don't want her sad. It'd also hard to watch Ji-wook denying his feelings, because we all know he has been too far gone, but he's being scared shitless of opening up again and even though I want to smack him for making Bong-hee cry, I can understand his fears too. Plus, due to the reappearance of Yoo-jung, he needs time to (re-)sort out his feelings.
So many things to love this episode:
- When Ji-wook goes all investigative and listens to his guts. Chief Kang gets him right to the T, he's sharp in other ways (likes it when he realizes what actually happens with Hyun-soo at the end of the episode) but only not when it comes to women.
- When Bong-hee clings to Ji-wook like a koala when she's drunk. Too too cute!
- Eun-Hyuk with Bong-hee and their good buddy vibes. It's too cute when they lament how easy their lives will be if they just like each other, LoL
- Chief Kang! His expression is super funny as always, and because he's clearly in the support for Ji-wook (asking concernedly whether his insomnia got worse) and for the OTP. The scene where he stands guard and does not let Chairman Byun & Eun-hyuk go up makes me go awwww.
- Of course, THE "Stay with me for five minutes" scene. So Ji-wook has realized that he can sleep just whenever Bong-hee is around, eh?
Yoo-jung shows her manipulative side. Guess she knows the fastest way to get Ji-wook to do her bidding is by threatening Bong-hee. I hate her a bit more because of her tactic, but it shows Ji-wook once again ready to put Bong-hee's needs above his own.
I don't know what to think about "The Usual Suspects" homage. Happy that such a brilliant movie is being referenced and Hyun-soo mirrors it by using references around him to build up a story about himself, but he's clearly no Keyser Soze.

Never occured to me it has much deeper meaning other than that *slaps head

I was saying elsewhere, since now we know who the criminal(s) is/are, therefore the mystery is in what they will do to continue to work the law in their favour and how they will do it, but especially how Ji Wook and team are going to outsmart the 'criminal minds'.

If the forensics guy and the killer are working together then....why was there even evidence of him left at the scene?
It must have been planed, right? So the killer wanted to be tried for murder and judged not guilty.
How does the amnesiac part play into all of this? Ji Wook said that the guy has a good memory to be able to recite all these different things like the movie poster from the wall in the pub to create his fake alibi.
Also, if cheating is enough of a reason for him to kill Bong Hee's ex, then I think me might need to be worried about our other live triangle...Eun Hyuk and Yoo-jung, please stay safe.
I would really like to also talk about that preview but I'm gonna keep my mouth shut in case of spoilers.

these are the same kinds of thoughts i have running around my head. maybe you can help me understand something though--- i'm confused about the m motives behind the murders. a lot of beanies have talked about cheating...but is cheating why people are getting killed? Or is it abuse/rape? I thought BH's ex got killed because he saw the killer's face (the killer came over to kill BH, thinking she had witnessed him) and met the boyfriend (just at the wrong place wrong time) and had to kill him. Did I miss someething though? (I confess that sometimes I am too excited to watch this show to wait for ALL the subtitles so its v possible I missed smthg major). The chef who was killed...isn't there some video of him doing something to some girls? That seems more like abuse to me than cheating. I got the impression that HS thinks he's a warrior for justice. twisted as he is...

I don't think BH's ex was accidentally killed. I just feel like the murderer would have had ample opportunity to realize that the person in her apartment was a man and not a woman.
I think the motive is tied to adultery/rape. He said something to Ji-wook about beating the guy up because he was unable to protect a woman when he was younger. I'm thinking he saw his mom raped and/or his father left them for his mistress.

That's what I thought first as well, that he just saw someone and assumed the ex was the witness he has to get rid of...I don't know, I just thought it was a weird coincidence that with the murder of the ex the killer got rid of yet another man that was mistreating women, even though he did so to a far lesser extend.
Actually, some here wrote that the ex might have had more to hide which I think is an interesting idea...maybe he was more than just a cheating jerk. His father gave our b*tch team of prosecutors a weird look as well....I'm not completely convinced of this possibility though.
In the end, it could all mean nothing and it turns out it really was just a mistake by the killer.

On one hand, I think they must have planned it that way because it makes no sense otherwise. On the other hand, he came really close to be declared guilty so was it's just bad planning or a mistake somewhere? It's really unclear.

Would have been quite some gamble, that's for sure. Interestingly, the forensic dude looked kind of.....unhappy when his killer acquaintance was free from his charges.... I really don't know what's up with those two. They look like a team and then again not like one.
Maybe the forensic guy has to play along with all of this for some reason, the killer has some leverage over him or threatens him in some way.

I seriously love this drama and a week of waiting is driving me insane! XD
I can't wait to know how Chan-ho and Hyun-soo are connected. I feel like there's more to their story.
Ji-wook is totally regretting what he said to Bong-hee that night. I mean, he's afraid and we get why... but damn... I can feel that he got hurt when Bong-hee turned down his offer to help with her swollen eyes (which was obviously from all the crying... but Ji-wook is to dense to recognize that).
Still, with his discovery of the lie that Hyun-soo made up for his alibi, I feel that he'll be sticking around Bong-hee a lot.

I also just love that kind of plot development when the female lead becomes the heroine and saves the day, especially after this episode that Bong-Hee did not get a chance to speak in court although the I am sure that writer wants Ji-Wook to deeply feel the pain blaming himself for setting the murderer free.

Ji-wook: Will I regret this moment? Will I regret stopping myself because I'm scared of starting a new relationship?
Me: OH BOY, YOU KNOW IT.
I'm just going to list down things that caught my eye since I'm too hyped to make it all coherent:
-Secretary Bang shipping Ji-wook and Bong-hee! It was cute how he protected the two from being seen by Chairman Byun and Eun-hyuk the morning after the necktie incident
-Eun-hyuk being a good friend to Bong-hee. It seems like he's a really nice and genuine person, maybe he had a lapse of judgment with Yoo-jung? She did come off as selfish and manipulative.
-Omo, the killer! Hyun-soo is the killer, right? And now he's within their circle, celebrating his freedom and carefully watching Bong-hee. Creep alert!
-That song playing when Ji-wook asks Bong-hee to stay by his side... I don't even understand what the song is saying but it's giving me so much feels!
-And finally, the best part: that sizzling tension between Ji-wook and Bong-hee!!!

Yay! I have so much to say about this episode. I don't even know if I have enough time to get through it all. Lol, I'll just have to rush so forgive me if none of this makes any sense, hehe.
First, ahaha, watching the slow fall of Chief Bang's smile as JW punished his nosiness with more and more work...oh, that was such a sad sight. His smile is the most delightful thing and to see it be taken away! Haha, he really became the OTP's official guard dog this episode. Lol, and Ji-wook should be super grateful to him that he's holding their romance together while he's flailing.
I'm actually so glad Bong-hee confessed because JW is so awkwardly aware now! This episode had the best epilogue yet. It's sweet that he was perceptive enough to realize how long she'd been feeling this way and that he cared about how hard it must have been for her.
There is something very genuine in the way he takes her feelings into consideration. Even if he sometimes can't help but try and cross the line. I kind of felt bad that he was forced to hold back when his feelings are still growing right now. But, ultimately, it's just too much for her and he has to respect that, even if it hurts. Plus, this will only help him to realize how to take active steps towards happiness and growth. Looking at how devastated he was when she pulled away from him in her sleep, I don't think we'll have to wait too long ;)
I have to admit, I'm kind of laughing at myself for coming out with a correct theory for Dong-ha's character before he even showed up on screen. Lol, I can't help that I'm a huge fan who thought he looked like the glimpses of the villain I saw! I'm also such a fan that I knew he was supposed to be playing a client in this and so I simply ended up thinking how fascinating it would be if our leads acquitted him when he was the real killer. Still have no idea what his deal is though and I'm fascinated to find out! This is a case when, even though it followed what I technically came up with in my head, I'm super happy with it going that way anyway. Hyun Soo just makes a far more interesting villain than his partner (or lackey?).
And I'm pumped because I think Ji Chang Wook and Dong Ha are playing off each other so well. Their scene this ep was so creepy and brilliantly acted by both. Something about Ji-wook's fierce perceptiveness mixed with the smug act he puts on and Hyun-soo with his rage control issues and his innocent act! There's definitely some deep-seated issues with HS and I can't wait for the writers to unravel his story.
Though Bong Hee has been completely fooled by his act, this is partially because he's been trying the hardest to fool her, even going so far as to replicate her own words from when she pleaded her innocence (seriously though...how did he do that?!). This whole case is going to provide such a hard lesson for her, but I also think the writer is doing this with purpose. More than Ji-wook going up against...

Yes that scene in jail where we catch a glimpse of Dong Ha's true side seriously gave me the heebee jeebies, and I really think it was thanks to the build of that conversation between the two characters. The last scene was also amazingly done with JW retracing the killer's "alibi."

Thanks LollyPip! So good, this show! Such a nice balance of crime-busting legal work together with character bonding moments. Such good writing on this score.
And what a wonderful twist for the killer to use Bong Hee who is hunting for him, to prove him innocent, and in the process to get her to befriend him and his accomplice, and so be close enough to not be suspected by her. No better place to hide than right in front of her. If not for the fact that Ji Wook hates defending people and finds all defendants suspicious, it would continue to be the perfect crime.
I'm all up to see how he pits his wits against the killer to get him for the same crime he got him acquitted for... What a delicious, parallel turnaround. In the past he was prosecuting Bong Hee but he had to get her acquitted (against his will but in line with his principles) because of too much evidence, but at least she was really innocent. Now he has done it again but because of the lack of evidence/tampering of evidence and it's also against his will, and this time the criminal is guilty.
Anyway I hope no one else has to get killed in order for the killer to get caught.
And my really favourite thing, on top of the OTP awkward moments, are the group dynamics of this new firm, and the one-on-one connections. Such sweet caring and confidante chat scenes. Can we have a couple or 3 criss-cross bromances/buddy-mances going on, do you think? ? ?

The prosecution can't try Hyun Soo for killing the chef again, but they can get him for killing the ex bf. it sucks that HS framed BH, but the chef was a rapist and I'm glad HS killed him so brutally. I wonder how HS will stay within BH's proximity now that he's free and shouldn't need lawyers anymore. and JW is onto him!

I am not sure if everybody is following the epilogue but in today's epilogue scene when JW and BH are driving to the crime scene....JW thinks back to BH confession from the morning that she will reset back her feelings to their mentor-trainee days. He realizes that she has liked him for so long and mutters "Good job" to her. When BH asks what does he mean, he totally sputters and just tells her to work hard on her job. ;)

How much do I always loathe drunken women in dramas, but with Bong Hee she is just so irresistably silly and giggly I cant even hate har being drunk. But don´t drink any more, girl.
Ji Wook cause he is torn by suspicion
Chief Bang cause a shipless shipper who cannot ship is a land rat on a bag of biscuits.

I think she concentrates on the case, but I think her "problem" is that she will always assume innocence first. Her background as a wrongfully accused murderer hinders judgment when faced with someone allegedly in the same boat. I think this will be part of her character growth, personally and professionally. Ji-wook will teach her how to separate her feelings from her job, while Bong-hee will teach him to have some empathy/sympathy for his clients.

I think she does as much as she can, but she is still a very newbie lawyer who probably never handled a murder case (well I'm not counting the case where she was the accused murderer). I hope this series develops her as a lawyer since it seems like she's playing the role of JW's paralegal right now while she is a lawyer in her own right. I loved how she basically fought her way into becoming a lawyer, how she opened her own law firm, and how she was passionate about catching the bad guy. She did lack a bit of her usual bite and drive this episode, but I gave her a pass since it's only been like 48 hours since she confessed and was rejected.

Bong Hee and Eun Hyuk were ADORABLE this episode. They are such a pair! How much do I love that they acknowledged their lack of attraction for each other?! That was hilarious! Haha, when they were lamenting how simple life would be if they could just have that spark! Too funny. In some ways, this is the best thing for him right now. True Friendship. Lol, too bad the best friend he's trying to win back will get more grumpy and jealous, the more they get along! Especially when he's been cut-off (well, except when she's clinging on to him!). So this may not go well for Eun-hyuk, but I want them to continue to have an awesome friendship anyway.
LOL. Ji-wook is such a mom though, taking care of and scolding his employees when they drink. Pretty much because they all act like children. But then half the time he just seems like a pouty little boy. Haha, I'm basically questioning whether they're all really adults. Like I do myself often. Huh. It may be a weird thing to focus on, but Ji Wook toootally made that big breakfast for everyone just so he can make BH breakfast without making it harder for feelings, like she asked him, RIGHT??? Because ugh, he cares for her so much, I swoooooon.
I really like how we can see Ji Wook getting conflicted and learning new things about being an attorney, and about what his dad was like as a lawyer through the things he's going through right now. It makes me want to see more of him as the prosecutor from before for comparison, because you can just see how uncomfortable the change is for him but also that it seems to suit him better.
You can kinda say the same thing about Bong Hee for him. She was almost like an alien to him before, what with her 'shameless' antics and refreshing honesty. But since he's started to care for her, it brought out change in him as well. He's different with BH, 'cause if he was anything like this with YJ (he and BH aren't even officially together yet and the things he already does and is willing to do for her are just ❤️), I wonder how the heck would YJ have ever felt like his love wasn't enough?
Hopefully JW musters up some courage for BH soon. For now, the intense gazes are what I live for.

They've been showing how instinctively he relaxes when she's around because he falls asleep when normally he has insomnia. Here he is tacitly admitting that he is aware of this reality, that he is comfortable around this woman like no other. It is a gorgeous way to show how far deep Ji-wook is for Bong-hee and how our fear of what he will do to protect her is well founded.

Its just Ji-wook, if you are wondering if you are going to regret telling her not to like you, as you're saying the words---its too late for you, friend.

That last scene of episode 14 leaves me breathless. I just found myself having a deep sigh after the episode ended! Now I'm getting more and more curious about the killer and his real intention, though I think it has something to do with women getting assaulted. I can't wait to find out their back story and why he has amnesia. As for the romance, I just hope Ji Wook finds it in himself to accept his feelings for Bong Hee and risk again. This drama is my new happy pill among all the ongoing dramas right now. ?❤

Again, Iove this soooooo much.
1. Damn, is it just me, or was that scene kind of hot, when she was kneeling in front of him and taking of his tie?
2. The Kayser Soze moment from The Usual Supects, with a direct reference to The Usual Suspects. I loved it.

Not just you.
It was hilarious though that she hurriedly explained that she was going to take ONLY the tie off.

I was already getting exiting, when he saw the wall and pictures. Of course I thought, "Oh my god, they are doing the final scene from "The Usual Suspects". And than they actually called it out. That was perfect.

Not just you. That kneeling was so symbolic for me too. It was very cultural---- I mean in the Asian context, it means respect, right? For me, it meant that she wanted to respect his wishes but that she will obey, and not interfere regardless. Also, it was also very hot because Ji Wook looked torridly hungry with those eyes. If this weren't a main stream drama, and if it had one of those steamy themes, those two would have gotten it on already.
Note: I wish writer-nim starts exploring steamy themes, too. Writer-nim executes sexiness very well, with Hello Monster and Suspicious Partner as testaments to that.

This episode gave me whiplash. I'm hella confused in the best possible way, but especially about Chan-ho's look when Hyun-Soo was acquitted. I am dying to find out what the hell is going on.
It broke my heart a little bit when Eun-Hyuk gave Yoo-Jung's address to the taxi driver when he was drunk. He is so in love with her, but due to their joint history and his love for Ji-Wook he kinda can't act on it and.... man, even though he is a cheater, I kinda feel for him. A lot. (Great acting from Choi Tae-Joon. Let's be real, great acting from everyone. They are all nailing their parts). I'm also kinda worried that their past indiscretions are somehow gonna provoke Chan-ho/Hyun-Soo to hurt them? I mean.... I mean, Hee-Joon "only" cheated on Bong-Hee (and was a huge dick) but they still killed him, so.... yeah, worried, especially because they are also clode to Bong-Hee and at least Hyun-Soo seems a little bit obsessed with her.
On a different note: kinda missed their moms this episode. I love those two.

Getting interesting. JCW rocks with his gazes! On the partnership of our villains--usual trope is for them to have grown in an orphanage together and one doing something terrible and being protected by the other. Hope the writer goes beyond this and surprises us. thanks, lollypip.

Hi Merry,
That's something to look out for. I did not think of that usual trope. Either the killer-accomplice or killer duo are related/real brothers or brothers-in-shared-circumstances. They appear to have been working together for years. Chan Ho got Bong Hee's number and it was Hyun Soo years' later who visits her office. So scary to be stalked by cold-blooded killers. I felt that Bong Hee was really desperate and unwise to have left her contact info on the banner for all to see. ?

Hi, GB
Great to be back. I thought that the murder of Bong Hee's ex was totally random, or it wasn't? Or they have been eyeing her and found the ex in her life. Alternatively, evil father of ex may have done something to them. conjectures. conjectures. With Bong Hee exposed to danger, Ji Woo better step up.

I just finished My Secret Romance (I know, totally different kind of drama, but hear me out), and since Suspicious Partner started, I've been yelling at my screen at MSR's epilogues, "See SP for how to do epilogues right!" Yeesh, no new information in the MSR epilogues at all, and they're 5 minutes long... Okay, griping over.
I love Suspicious Partner in all ways so far!

What if.....just WHAT IF.........remember Eun-hyuk and Yoo-Jung are going to be on Hyun-Soo's radar after HS finds out about how they "hurt" Ji-wook when?
My hypothesis is that HS finds out how JW is a victim of YJ cheating with EH, and as a "thank you gift", decides that EH and YJ needs to be punished? Reminiscent of the reason HS kileld Hee-Joon?

My previous hypothesis is that Hyun-Woo would punish Ji-Hae for cheating with Hee-Joon since there seesm to be more to the story behind Ji-Hae's character, but your hypothesis is an excellent one! It would definitely bring the conflict that will lead to the reconciliation between Ji-Wook and Eun-Hyun (and possibly Nara). I am not thrilled that Eun-Hyun still seems to be in love with Nara since so far I don't find Nara possessing any redeeming quality But if Eun-Hyun's life is endangered, Ji-Wook may ultimately forgive him (or them) for their betrayal.
