Fight My Way: Episode 11

The hilarious awkwardness we were treated to last week is nothing compared to the secondhand cringeworthy, sugary goodness this episode delivers. As the lifelong besties try to adjust to their new status, they’ll have to navigate nosy friends and interfering neighbors in addition to their own insecurities. But not everything in the Villa is hearts and roses, and as one couple learns to find their footing, another may be about to lose theirs completely.

Round 11: “A real woman”

Dong-man kisses Ae-ra, then tells her that this means they’re officially dating. She agrees with a stunned nod, and he kisses her again.

A while later they sit on the beach, feeling a bit awkward. Ae-ra asks why Dong-man was so impulsive and manly back there, and he says that it wasn’t impulsive, admitting that he’s been able to do nothing but stare at her lips for a while now.

Nervous that Ae-ra might change her mind, he orders her not to date anyone else, or sit next to men on the bus. He tells her not to even think of any other men, particularly not that first love of hers: “Only think of me.” Ae-ra comes clean that Wrist Guy, her stupid jerkface first love of twenty years, is actually Dong-man. He blinks and stammers, surprised, and she says that he’s sort of like that pimple on her forehead that comes and goes, hurts then doesn’t.

She asks him to stop being her guy friend, because she feels like she’ll die if they go back after he kissed her like that. Dong-man calls her an idiot and says that she should have just kissed him and he’d have fallen for her instantly. Ae-ra shyly asks if he liked it, and he just as shyly asks if she wants to kiss again. She does.

Nearby, Coach Hwang and Landlady Hwang set off more fireworks. Landlady Hwang makes a face at the lovebirds, then asks Coach to shoot his firecrackers at them. Hee.

At the villa the next morning, Dong-man and Joo-man discover that they’re getting a new neighbor. They wonder at all the fancy furniture, which doesn’t seem to suit their building at all. Oh no, I’m getting a bad feeling…

Seol-hee watches Ae-ra getting all fancied up in her at-home sweats, rolling the shirt up to show off her midriff and wearing a headband. Ae-ra insists that this is her normal outfit for taking out the trash, getting huffy when Seol-hee asks if anything happened with Dong-man in Daecheon.

They head outside, where Ae-ra poses hilariously while tossing out the trash in front of Dong-man. Horrified at her exposed skin, he quickly unties her shirt. Seol-hee asks suspiciously if they’re going to spend the whole day together, and Dong-man fails to be casual when he says they are.

Joo-man suggests they all have some of Seol-hee’s plum wine after work. Before leaving, Seol-hee tells them not to “do it,” making Dong-man and Ae-ra cough guiltily. Then she adds, “The plum wine. Don’t open it.” HA.

Landlady Hwang scares Dong-man again by popping up right behind him (that never gets old, lol), and she notes that the new tenant left rice cakes for all the other tenants except for Ae-ra. She says the tenant is a very famous announcer, and ugh, I think I know where this is going.

Sure enough, Hye-ran comes down the stairs to confront Ae-ra and Dong-man. She’s completely brazen about the fact that she’s moving into the apartment above Dong-man’s, saying that it’s so she can see him every day just like Ae-ra does.

Dong-man tells Hye-ran that he and Ae-ra are dating now and she accepts the news, saying that it’s good that he’s lost his best female friend. She says that she’ll move into the vacant spot left behind and ensure that Ae-ra knows exactly how annoying that friend can be.

Ae-ra spits that she’s now Dong-man’s best friend and girlfriend, but Hye-ran counters that once they break up, she’ll be nothing. She tells Dong-man that it’s all or nothing, and there’s no going back.

Her words haunt Ae-ra, who flops around her apartment wondering what Hye-ran meant by that. Dong-man calls her outside and tells her to change clothes and come along to his weigh-in, then after they can go on a “date or whatever.” Hee, so smooth.

He notices that she’s not talking and asks her why she’s suddenly acting like a real woman. He starts to say she’s being no fun, but he sees the pouty look on her face and squeaks, “Of course that makes you ideal!” Ha, nice save, Moose.

At work, Joo-man is informed that the kimchi company run by Ye-jin’s aunt has decided not to do another broadcast with them. His boss makes it clear that it’s entirely due to Joo-man’s rejection of Ye-jin.

Ae-ra asks Dong-man why he’s standing outside all awkwardly instead of coming in. He says that he can’t come in anymore, because they’re really just young, vigorous, impulsive animals (You say that like it’s a bad thing?). Ae-ra mutters under her breath that he’s too uptight.

She tells him that it will take her over an hour to get ready, snapping at him that it’s their first date when he tells her to just wear anything. She asks if he really knows that little about women’s hearts, then stomps inside.

When she comes out, dressed to the nines in a sundress and heels, Dong-man gives her an awed round of applause. But then he suddenly yells in horror, “Why are your legs so pretty?!” HA. He pouts that they’ll dazzle other men and tells her to put some pants on. When she goes in, he collapses from the shock of her gorgeous legs.

Joo-man and Seol-hee go to a restaurant, where Joo-man ignores Seol-hee in favor of a baseball game on his phone. She complains that he’s not talking to her so he turns off the game, though he says it’s normal for things to settle and become routine and dull after being together for six years. Ouch, dude.

He says he’s tired, but she asks what he’s tired of when they never talk or go on dates, or even kiss or have sex anymore. Joo-man says that she’s always so sweet and loving, so he’s tired of always being the bad guy. Upset, Seol-hee leaves, but Joo-man catches up to her. She complains that she doesn’t ask anything of him—she just wants things to be how they used to be. Joo-man asks how anyone can stay the same for six years, but Seol-hee says, “I have.”

She says that he still makes her heart flutter, and that she likes him even more than before. Joo-man says he’s sorry with a sigh, and Seol-hee says that she feels like she’s always whining and he’s always sighing. She asks if this is just a phase or if they’re in the process of breaking up.

On the bus, Ae-ra slides her hand out of Dong-man’s, admitting shyly that her hand is sweaty. Dong-man just smirks and offers his hand again, silently letting her know that he doesn’t care. They decide to keep their fledgling relationship a secret from Joo-man and Seol-hee for now, dreading the vicious teasing they’ll get.

Ae-ra says that Seol-hee will tell them not to date and just get married, and Dong-man coyly asks if she just proposed to him. Ae-ra asks if he wishes she had, making Dong-man grin to himself again. So cute.

It’s difficult for Ae-ra to watch Dong-man train, especially when Coach Hwang pins him and hurts his arm. Coach fusses at him for tapping out, but Ae-ra defends Dong-man, then yells at Coach for hurting him (and Dong-man shows her his owie with the cutest pout on his face).

Dong-man asks when Doo-ho will show up for training, but Coach just curses about Tak-soo. Apparently Doo-ho did defect to Tak-soo’s team, and he’s Dong-man’s next opponent. The two pose shirtless at a press conference, and afterward, Dong-man and Doo-ho find themselves alone in the restroom.

Calm and collected, Dong-man asks Doo-ho what’s going on. Doo-ho says that he needs to go where he can flourish, but he looks distraught when Dong-man asks if he even told Coach first.

In the press room, Coach Hwang tells Tak-soo that his dirty tricks only make Dong-man more determined to win. Tak-soo warns him away, but Coach gets in his face and snarls at him not to make it too easy, because it makes it less fun to crush him.

Tak-soo’s coach apologizes to Coach Hwang for stealing two of his fighters. Coach Hwang says that Doo-ho is just a kid trying to make a living for his family, asking the coach not to use him.

Doo-ho tearfully admits to Dong-man that if it weren’t for his child, who’s very sick, he wouldn’t have switched teams. Dong-man tells him firmly to stop crying, but Doo-ho is upset. He says that Tak-soo’s team is trying to mess with Dong-man and get Coach’s gym shut down, and he defected anyway despite knowing this.

He asks Dong-man to take care of Coach, and then Coach arrives. Coach tells Doo-ho to come over for soondae any time, then they leave him crying all over again.

Coach is a bit put out when Dong-man and Ae-ra don’t want to go eat dinner with him. Ae-ra mocks him for holding a grudge, and Dong-man announces, “We’re dating.” He tells the shocked Coach that today is their first date.

Coach yanks Dong-man close to ask if there’s something he can’t tell him. HAHA, he thinks Ae-ra is forcing him to date her against his will. Dong-man shuffles back to Ae-ra’s side, taking her hand with a gesture like, Whatcha gonna do? Once they’re alone, Dong-man backhugs Ae-ra and pouts that he’s hungry.

Back at his place, Dong-man swoons over the fancy fried rice with a heart drawn in ketchup that Ae-ra makes for him, which he says is very different from the dog food he’s used to getting. In flashback, we see her thrust a pan full of mixed-up rice and eggs at him with a curt, “Hey. Food.” It’s actually the exact same food, just served very differently today. After eating, they settle in to watch TV.

When Ae-ra makes herself comfortable on the floor, Dong-man casually says there’s plenty of room on the bed with him. She accuses him of trying something, making him splutter that he wouldn’t do that when they’ve just started dating.

She complains when he says he wasn’t even thinking such thoughts, so she hops up on the bed, deciding that one of them needs to do something drastic to jump-start their relationship. She says that after taking twenty-three years to kiss, she thinks they should speed up to make up for the delayed start. Well, rawr.

Dong-man looks nervous, but when Ae-ra asks if she needs to explain further, he shakes his head and scoots closer to lean in for a kiss. Just before their lips touch, Joo-man lets himself into the apartment and they jump apart. Luckily (or unluckily), Joo-man is too upset about his fight with Seol-hee to notice and he flops onto the bed between them.

Joo-man just blindly gets comfortable between them and starts asking for liquor and food, not noticing the glares he’s getting from both sides.

The next day is Dong-man’s fight, which Joo-man and Seol-hee both skip work to attend. The four run into Landlady Hwang on their way out, and although all they say is that Dong-man has something happening that day, she stops to give him a cute little “Fighting!” which they can’t even decipher because she says it so shyly.

Before his fight, Coach Hwang and Joo-man remind Dong-man to knock his opponent out early with his kicks and to avoid being thrown to the ground, because his ground skills are weak. Meanwhile the girls find seats in the audience, and as another fight gets underway, Ae-ra finds herself fascinated by the theatrical announcer.

She excuses herself and finds an empty room, where she practices imitating the announcer’s booming stage voice. She jumps ten feet when Dong-man peeks around a partition at her, having been in the room the whole time, HA. Embarrassed, she flees to the hallway, where she spots creepy producer Kyung-ku entering the room.

He’s here to film Dong-man for a show, but he gets off on the wrong foot by insisting that Dong-man follow a concept he doesn’t care for, to play up the poor starving fighter sob story. Kyung-ku starts to get nasty, but he dials it back when Ae-ra bursts into the room. She tells him right away that she and Dong-man are dating.

Ha, the look on his face is so gratifying, and Ae-ra continues that if he messes with Dong-man, then she’ll be the one to bite him. She orders Kyung-ku not to film a single thing, then leaves. Kyung-ku looks terrified, while Dong-man looks like he just fell in love all over again.

In the lobby, Ae-ra finds a poster announcing open recruitment for cage fight announcers. She tells Seol-hee that it sounds exciting to be in that cage with the fighters, though Seol-hee worries it’ll be hard to get the job since it seems like it’s mostly men who do it. Ae-ra says that just makes her want to do it more, thinking that she’d love to be the first female cage fight announcer.

As Dong-man prepares to enter the ring, Ae-ra grows nervous again and has to step out into the lobby. Dong-man comes out strong, landing several kicks to the torso then a flying roundhouse kick to Doo-ho’s face. He knocks Doo-ho to the ground, injuring him and stopping the fight momentarily.

While the medics check out Doo-ho’s bloody face, Dong-man is worried, but Coach Hwang yells at him that this is a fight. But Dong-man sees Doo-ho’s wife sobbing in the audience, so when the fight resumes, he’s reluctant to hit Doo-ho the next time he knocks him down.

Everyone is baffled when Dong-man hesitates, then backs off to let Doo-ho stand. Doo-ho comes at him, trying to get him to the ground but failing, until Dong-man knocks him down easily with another kick to the leg. Again he lets Doo-ho up, and now the audience is starting to complain.

As Ae-ra peeks in, curious about the noise, Dong-man takes Doo-ho down a third time with a kick to the chest. The fight ends, and Dong-man is declared the winner. Dong-man asks Doo-ho if he’s okay, and though he’s bloody and battered, Doo-ho wails that being knocked out would have been better.

Even though he won, netizens are already derisively calling Dong-man “the Octagon Waiter” because he waited for his opponent to get up every time he knocked him down. Over dinner, Coach Hwang and Joo-man are annoyed at the way Dong-man behaved during the fight. Coach snaps that there’s no place for niceness in the ring and tells Dong-man to quit if he’s going to be like this.

Dong-man argues that he’s still learning, and says that he’ll just KO his opponents from now on instead of letting things get messy. Coach moves to smack him, but just a small twitch from Ae-ra has Coach meek as a lamb again, hee. She asks why Coach is so anxious, telling him to just sit back and trust Dong-man, and Dong-man beams at her adoringly.

Dong-man’s parents discuss him at the dinner table, as Mom tells Dad that he should call his son every now and then. While they argue, Dong-man’s sister Dong-hee watches his fight on her phone, smiling when he’s declared the winner.

Ae-ra and Dong-man linger at their doors that night, reluctant to part. Dong-man says he’ll be over for breakfast, so Ae-ra simpers that she should start washing her hair every morning, and he giggles that normal people do that anyway.

Ae-ra turns to ask if she should come over to Dong-man’s place for TV and ramyun. His brain freezes up again, knowing what she means by “ramyun,” and they both smile coyly… until Landlady Hwang steps between them with a firm, “No sleeping together before marriage, and no ramyun at night!”

Ae-ra asks why she keeps saying that to them, but Landlady Hwang just points out that she’s giving them a break on rent, so the least they can do is follow her rules. She complains that all her tenants are blinded by love, snapping that they can move to a place with higher rent if they want to sleep together.

Landlady Hwang wanders over to Coach’s soondae cart to demand a bottle of soju, which he pours for her reverently. He knows who he is, and says all he knew is that she left for Japan a long time ago. Landlady Hwang reveals that she had a near-death experience, so she decided to find Nam-il, her son, and Namil Villa’s namesake. Coach Hwang didn’t know she had a son, and she tells him that she’s already found him.

Ae-ra complains to Seol-hee about the landlord, and why she cares if they have ramyun at night or not. Seol-hee wonders why Nam-il isn’t here to take care of his mother.

Tak-soo is worried after seeing Dong-man’s latest fight, though Tae-hee tells him not to worry and to rest. But Coach Choi tells Tak-soo that Dong-man has the same weaknesses that “somebody” had when he first switched over from taekwondo—he doesn’t protect his face and never attacks low, or goes to the ground. Coach Choi thinks that if he can’t avoid fighting Dong-man, then Tak-soo should do it now while he still has weaknesses to exploit.

In practice, Coach recreates Dong-man’s fight with Doo-ho, and again Dong-man refuses to go after him when he’s on the ground. He says he’s more confident on his feet and refuses to go low, but Coach yells that he’ll never be a true fighter that way, clearly getting very personal and emotional about it.

A handsome man in a suit catches Ae-ra practicing her fight announcing outside her apartment, listing her own stats as if she’s the fighter, hee. He says he’s the owner’s son, NAM-IL (cameo by Kwak Shi-yang), and he sighs heavily when Ae-ra says his name like she knows him.

Nam-il imperiously orders Ae-ra not to wear offensive clothing on the shared staircase (is he offended by her lack of fashion?), and not to shout and disturb others. Further, he intones that nobody would believe she’s the height and weight she yelled out. Wow, he’s really uptight. As they part, she mutters that he’s handsome but a total jerk, while he mutters that she’s a wacko.

Joo-man heads home with a stuffed pink bunny for Seol-hee. Just outside the door, he answers a call from Ye-jin in an annoyed voice, reminding her that he said to stop this, but she tells him that she’s been in a car accident. He rushes over to help, casually stepping between Ye-jin and the aggressive men who are berating her.

Though Ye-jin claims that the other guy backed into her, he says that she’s at fault and demands a large sum of money to settle without getting insurance involved. Joo-man smells the barbecue on the guy’s clothing and guesses that he had a few drinks, which makes the would-be scammer drop the issue.

As Joo-man drives Ye-jin home, he asks why she was even in his neighborhood. He tells her one last time to stop pursuing him, and she promises, but when they get out of the car she limps and falls, needing help to stand. Joo-man helps her up to her apartment, accidentally leaving the pink bunny in her car.

At her door, he asks her to come back to work, because her absence is putting him in a bad position. He turns to go, but when he sees her struggling to carry in some large boxes, he goes back to help her. Joo-man goes inside her apartment with the last box, and the door closes behind him with an ominous click.

At home, Seol-hee stares at Ye-jin’s Instagram account again. She sees a new post pop up, showing a man’s hands driving her car, with a caption reading, “Together.” Seol-hee recognizes those hands, and a lance of pain pierces her heart.

Dong-man bounces upstairs to meet Ae-ra on the roof. She pours soju bombs while he talks to his dad, who’s coming to town on a business trip and needs a place to crash. After hanging up, Dong-man admits that he’s nervous because he’s never slept alone with his dad before.

He changes the subject to ask about Ae-ra’s MMA announcer interview in two days. He asks if she’ll be okay watching his fights, and she retorts that it’s the only way she can protect him. Dong-man looks pleased and says that she’s always protected him, even when they were kids.

He likes the idea of Ae-ra becoming an MMA announcer, which would technically make them an office couple, which he’s always thought sounded sexy. He says shyly that office couples can sneak off to kiss at work, and it’s Ae-ra’s turn to go on the fritz and just repeat, “Huh…? Huh…?”

She denies being embarrassed even when she curls into a protective ball. Dong-man slides nearer to her, takes her face into his hands, and says she’s acting really girly now. Ae-ra pushes his hands away, but he just clasps her wrists and uses them to pull her closer.

In a gruff voice, Dong-man asks why he can’t see anything but Ae-ra’s lips. He asks if they can kiss all the time since they’re dating, and laughs when Ae-ra calls him crazy. He gives her a kiss and asks if she likes it, then gives her another, and another, until they’re both smiling.

Dong-man says he should have kissed her a long time ago, and Ae-ra jokes that she’d have just beaten him up, hee. Dong-man admits that he likes kissing her, adding, “Choi Ae-ra, I like you a lot. It’s driving me crazy.” Instead of melting, Ae-ra snaps, “I’ve always liked you, you jerk.” LOL.

Growing serious, Dong-man says that if it’s all or nothing, then he wants to make it “all.” Ae-ra doesn’t know what he means, so he asks her, “Do you want to sleep over tonight?”

Epilogue.

The night that Joo-man had interrupted Dong-man and Ae-ra’s kiss, he stayed to play games on his phone while Dong-man complained loudly that Joo-man did a terrible thing to him today. Joo-man asked what he meant, and Dong-man hemmed and hawed, asking if Joo-man was going to tease him about it. But just as Dong-man was going to reveal his and Ae-ra’s new status, Joo-man screamed excitedly over his game, and Dong-man shoved a dumpling in his mouth in annoyance.

COMMENTS

This episode brought home yet again how refreshingly honest Ae-ra and Dong-man are with each other. Even when it’s horrifically awkward, they say whatever they’re thinking. That conversation on the beach after they kissed was just my favorite scene, because even though they were nervous with newfound awareness, they still laid out their expectations clearly. Dong-man made it known that he wants to be the only man Ae-ra sees, and Ae-ra told him that it’s been like that for years now. And I love that she was the one who made the first move in shifting their relationship to something more physical—or would have, if not for Joo-man. But I also appreciate that Dong-man took the lead to ask her to sleep over, not willing to leave something so important to happen by chance. It’s totally in keeping with their openness for each other for him to simply ask what she wants, which I find incredibly respectful, and therefore incredibly sexy. Dong-man always says what he’s thinking and what he wants, so Ae-ra can feel secure in knowing what he’s feeling at any given time.

Have I mentioned lately how much I love Dong-man? He’s just so lovable and he obviously adores Ae-ra so much, how could you not? I think it’s fantastic that he’s not at all threatened by her aggressiveness, not even when she steps in to defend him from some injustice—so many drama heroes would bristle at having a woman fight their battles, but Dong-man thinks it’s awesome. I love how he beams at Ae-ra every time she does it, and how proud he is to be the person she so fiercely protects. Then when she gets amorous, he just turns into a blinking, stammering ball of mush, so flustered by her that he can barely even think, much less string together a coherent sentence. That’s not to say that the boy hasn’t got game, because he’s got all kinds of game… he just has a hard time recovering when Ae-ra knocks him off-kilter.

As for his fighting, I’m actually glad to learn that Dong-man has a weakness (and I love that his theme song is “Fire” by BTS! It’s such a great fight song). It wouldn’t be realistic, after almost a decade of not fighting at all, for him to be an instant prodigy. His first 19-second fight was a fluke, so seeing him struggle in the fight with Doo-ho was actually realistic, because it makes sense that in a totally new and more aggressive fighting style, Dong-man would struggle to hurt a friend. It could have been disastrous when Dong-man started feeling bad for Doo-ho during their fight, but I liked how he was able to alter his fighting style to keep himself from hurting Doo-ho too badly yet still win. Maybe it backfired this time in terms of telegraphing his weakness to his enemies, but it’s a useful skill to be able to adjust to the situation. Once he learns how to use it better, that ability to tailor his style to the situation at hand could be Dong-man’s true gift.

As for Seol-hee and Joo-man—I used to think they could work through their problems, because Joo-man has mostly been good about pushing Ye-jin away, but now I’m realizing that Ye-jin is just a symptom of a larger problem. They’re letting their relationship stagnate, neither moving forward nor ready to let go, and though she seems sweet and innocent, Seol-hee is a large part of the reason this is happening. She wants things to stay the same, but Joo-man is right in that it’s not a realistic expectation. And Seol-hee has no interests other than him, and that’s got to be very burdensome for Joo-man, not to mention just plain boring.

I mean, I don’t find their storyline that interesting and I can usually find something to keep me interested in any love story. At this point, I just want them to break up and spend some time apart. If they are meant to be together then they will, but they’ll be more complete people who are together because they want to be and not because they haven’t got any better options. Mostly I want Seol-hee to find an interest that doesn’t revolve around a man and being married—there’s nothing wrong with wanting to marry and raise a family, but having only one life goal and no other interests isn’t healthy. She’s a smart, compassionate woman with a vast capacity for love, and there’s so much more she can do with her gifts in addition to being a housewife. And as for Joo-man, I almost want him to go date Ye-jin for a while. Let him see how shallow and selfish she is, and how much he’d be losing by letting go of Seol-hee. I want to see him suffer, and miss her terribly, and fight to get her back.

I can feel the dating akwardness right through my screen.. Hahah.
it's amazing how these two actors, especially Park Seo Joon, are so good in showing the transition from bestfriends to lovers.. they're too lovely!!
And ye, i'm officially skipping all Joo Man and Seol Hee'd scenes, i'll just read about their story in the recap.
Lastly, I can't still get out of my mind the character Kwak Si Yang played in Chicago Typewriter, the moment i heard him talk in today's episode I was like: thank God it's just a cameo, I hate him already. Haha

one of the things I truly admire with Park Seo Joon, is his never ending ability as an actor to turn on a dime.. from awkward to intense to hilarious. I loooooved him in Kill me, Heal me whenever he was on screen with Ahn Yona and his quick ability to have me busting a gut laughing out loud then equally in the next scene tearing up at whatever he was doing.
This drama just confirms for me that he is one of my top 5 Korean actors at this point.. I can't sing his or KJW praises enough in this drama!

I can't quite bring myself to skip their scenes yet... but at this point I'm also rooting for them to 'just' break up. Their relationship isn't healthy anymore and I feel like the only reason they are still together is because they have been for the past six years and that is a huge time investment.

I liked that it was Soel-hee who brought up breaking up first. (Even just tentatively.) At least she is thinking about the advice her mother gave her last episode and isn't just ignoring it.

I know Joo0man & Seol-hee's relationship is sorta doomed right now & JM aint anyone's fav but just how cute was he bouncing with excitement as Dong-man's psuedo-manager ?!!? That was adorable and totally redeemed him in my eyes!

While I don't think it redeems him, I totally agree with you about how cute he was being so supportive and hyper cheering on Dong-man. I still like and care for Joo-man because I know how much he loves Seol-hee. It's just that he keeps pushing it and Seol-hee can only let it slide for so long. Some time apart could do some good for the two, but I really do hope he fights hard for Seol-hee's heart, redeems himself, and they sit down and just talk to each other because there's definitely a lot that they need to discuss in regards to their personal and relationship goals.

I agree. I don't skip their scenes. They did not have a lot of screentime this episode.

I'm glad Seol Hee thought of breaking up first too. She clearly surprised Joo Man with that remark. Can't believe JM even admitted that they were dull now. I want her to be the one to break up with him.

I think he's doing the passive aggressive thing ie waiting for her to dump him. Cos otherwise he would feel guilty, since she's been supporting him in years past. I find Jooman's character realistic - someone who's just burnt out from work and feels like he's in a dead end career and relationship wise (that's why he's always escaping into entertainment like his phone games), suddenly Ye Jin appears, flatters him, and pursues him doggedly...he knows he needs to be honorable and tries to resist, but he's not immune to temptation.

Yup. I think you're right he's waiting for SH to break up with him. I think that's what I like about their relationship is super realistic. I also think that's why it's so annoying.

Good analysis. I liked that this drama includes some realistic elements.

1

100% agree with your comment @Wendy. I agree that the story of JM and SH is difficult to watch because its TOO REAL! I know many people men/women that experience the same situation after many years of dating/marriage. As he said their relationship is DULL! No matter how much they love each other they need some changes or new experience to feel excited about each other again. Maybe being far from each other, traveling alone, learning new things, changing carrier can help. And sorry for saying that but 95% of men will cheat if they put in the same equation JM is in!!

2

But wouldnt things be just as same for Yejin and Jooman in few years down the road and what if Jooman understands he did mistakes with his one true love who is Sul Hee?

how can u hate him?!? Kwak Si-yang is sooo cute and he acted so well in CT - I'm so happy to him in a light drama. Hope his character has some fun arcs and isnt just snobby - although i wouldnt mind his snobby sneer either cuz he be is pretty even then! :D

Kwak Si-yang's villain in Chicago Typewriter was so good that when he came on I was thinking “are you now looking for the first draft of Fate in Namsil Villa?” Where is our favorite sniper when we need her?

I was at first hoping that he would be Seol-hee’s trophy boyfriend, but then show gave us another jerk.

LOL! I had the exact same reaction as you @joongkicookie , when I saw Kwak Si Yang on my screen. Baek Tae Min the pyscho pet-abuser is still so fresh on my mind, that even the short few seconds seeing Kwak Si Yang as Namil still gave me the creeps ? But that's really a testimony of how well and believable he played the villain in CT.

Now, I'm curious what's the role of Namil in this drama apart from being the landlady's son and the name of the villa (I haven't seen ep. 12, perhaps we get to know more about him more in the next few episodes?)

Thanks for the recap!

-I absolutely LOVE how awkward DM and AR are together. I'm also loving all of the honesty and complete bewilderment at each other's proximity/skinship/etc.
-I used to think that if both JM and SH changed a little and really talked things out that they could still work, but now I think SH deserves way better. Sure, she needs to learn to stand up for herself and let the other person give a little in the relationship, but ultimately if JM really cared about fixing things, he would try to talk things through instead of making excuses for his behavior and playing the victim. I feel like maybe the writer forgot to give him a redeeming quality or something? Or maybe his redeeming quality is supposed to be his helpfulness? Except every time he helps YJ I can't help but groan, because he either doesn't realize or doesn't care how it affects SH, and that's just a crappy way to go about being in a relationship.
-The more info we get on the landlady the more confused I get. Is she actually AR's mom or not? Who the heck is this random son? I need answers.

I agree with you on everything.

- I just love Park Seo Joon's flabbergasted expression whenever Ae-ra is acting girly around him. Must be quite a new behavior to him coming from her... not that he didn't realise she was a girl before.

- Also I really dig the way the writer is taking Ae-ra's jobhunting. In a way this cage fight anouncer gig would fit her personality so much better than being on tv. *fighting*

- Yoon-man... *sigh* sometimes I think he has a hero complex. He always wants to help the damsel in distress. That was also the reason why he told the company that he and Seol-hee are dating because he couldn't stand seeing Seol-hee being put under so much scrutiny by everyone. But while sometimes that is kinda swoony in some hero's in this case it's a total turn-off for me. He shouldn't have helped little-miss-intern... especially not with the boxes in the end. Also I think the situation wold have been bad enough already without adding her conniving aspect in aswell..

Joo-man and Seol-hee should break up. I never thought of him having a hero complex, but that makes sense. Yup, break up and then maybe they both can find reasons to become better people. I don't know if I want them together again or not.

And every reaction and interaction that Dong-man and Ae-ra had was precious. PSJ and the faces he can make, LOL, so cute!

I'd like to give more trust into JM -- I don't think what the writers are making out what happened really happened.
And omg ... Hye-ran, she really can't take the message can she ? Now she's moving on top of DM ?? At least she wasn't cockblocking or anything this episode so I'm ok!
I'm curious about the new Nam character and the land lord -- I still haven't figured it out quite yet

I feel secondhand embarassment watching Dong Man and Ae Ra's first date. Coach-nim's reaction when he knew that they're dating is just priceless. ?

As much as I love seeing their lovey dovey scenes, I'm still hoping that Dong Man will overcome his weaknesses on him using a lot of taekwondo moves and beat Tak Su. I also hope that Ae Ra will be the first woman announcer for MMA competition, that would be awesome! If that happens, our Dong Man dreams of having office romance will come true.

I'm still curious about Landlord Hwang's identity. I still stick with my theory that she's Ae Ra's secret birthmom, but Kwak Shi Yang cameo confuses me again.

Based on the probability of real life experience, DM would probably leave SH for intern. He's at the stage where he doesn't love her enough, yet he loves her too much to let her go.

I also dread what is to come - perhaps DM will get beaten up really badly ( if this was typical kdrama awhile back he would fall into a coma after the fight and then get amnesia and think he's still dating Hye Ran or sth ) or perhaps he and AR will break up . Though I really wish they won't , they need some plot to fill 5 more eps ....

IF landlady Hwang was not hiding from coach at the motel ( cause she revealed herself to him later ) , she must have been hiding from AR's father (?) at first I thought she was related to coach Hwang cause they have the same surname but they don't seem to be related even though they know each other

I can't stop giggling at watching Dongman and Aera try and figure their new relationship out after being friends for so long! I was in stitches at how they'd say their familiar curses like "shekki," "hwak," etc. lovingly to one another LOL. Same old Dongman and Aera, just with the giant 20 year old elephant in the room finally out of the way. Are they not the cutest!! Going from best friends to lovers is never really a graceful process, there's a lot of awkward hurdles to jump over and issues to discuss regarding how to cross boundaries now. These two seem to be figuring it out extremely well, right down to the hilarious hijinks and confessions that leave you breathless that we get to witness along the way. How refreshing was it for Aera to finally say Dongman is her first love? I love how our couple get things out in the open right away, they don't seem like the type to be in denial any more.

Today's episode was also the first time I really, REALLY felt for Seolhee. She and Joongman represent the kind of couple that will either slowly dissolve in the face of trial, or stay stronger after it's over. The loneliness she feels from desperately trying to keep her relationship from falling apart at the seams is so raw and real, and seeing her scroll through Yejin's Instagram feed multiple times a day were scenes that struck a deep chord in me. Haven't we all been there before? Stalking someone's SNS, feeling inadquate compared to them, wishing they weren't a factor that threatens to hinder what you have with someone you really like... And it's not like Jooman is a scumbag or a cheater caught in action. He tells Yejin no, he asks her please don't, not anymore, respect his personal space. He probably feels like trash both towards Seolhee and Yejin, honestly. His confusion towards his relationship with Seolhee which was happening simultaneously with Yejin's growing feelings towards him is a monster that has nothing to do with both girls at all, not in the end. It was always down to the matter of what Jooman wants/needs to stop beating himself up. Hopefully he figures it out, and if he has to take a breather from Seolhee to get there, I hope he clears his head and comes back to her soon. I want her to be more strong, not seek her identity in him. I want Joongman to be more confident in himself, and love Seolhee not because she's pitiful, but because he loves her for who she is.

I think this has been the fairest post on the JM and SH relationship.
That instagram scene got to me too. :(
My friend once explained relationships like this to me this way.
Ok so you saw an amazing trailer for a movie and all stoked you went to the theater.
You bought your ticket, popcorn etc. The movie begins sort of like the trailer than 10 mins in it's really diverging drastically and 25 minutes in you absolutely hate it SO MUCH.
Now before 30 mins you can leave the theater, get your money back and do anything else with that time. But you stay for the entire movie and hate it.
Now most people will stay for the entire movie even if they know early on or half way through that they hate it. Why? Because they have invested time, money, emotions and the idea of it being a waste is not an option so they waste even more resources trying to prove it wasn't a waste.
There are a lot of relationships in which people have been dating or married or together for years and they aren't right for each other any more but they will stay together because it's been years.
Leave the theater JM and SH.

I love this episode so much. i love how how open Aera and Dongman is to each other-this is exactly how me and my ex-boyfriend were in the past. We were friend-turns-lover and we are actualy very open because we literally know everthing about each other lol. Though our relationship comes to an end at one point, i still sometimes remember how awkward it was when we first change our status. Ahh, such a good days to be in love. Now, i'am still enjoying my single phrase hee

About seolhee and jooman i thinks its time for them to take a 'rest' from their relationship. They both need to talk if they think that this relationship cannot go anywhere for them at this point and if that doesn't work, then let go. Sometimes, we need to let go things that we love don't we? :)

A relationship really has many "rights" to accommodate— the right people, at the right time. Just like how Ae-ra and Dong-man missed out on some chances to be together because those weren't the right moments, I think that Seol-hee and Joo-man aren't having a right moment currently as well. The latter should work towards being honest and open, and perhaps take a break, to see where their relationship is going (if it's even making any progress at all).

Yes, they are awkwardly adjusting to this change in dynamic but they aren't too afraid to make what they want clear. They are both adults and I love that Ae Ra wants it just as much as Dong Man. K-dramas don't depict women as people with sexual desires enough and I'm happy to see that this show is. It's refreshing and I would love to see more leading ladies be honest and up front about it.

DM and AR: DongMan and AeRa are all kinds of love together. I'm happy that once we are past that initial misunderstanding of the wrist guy. DongMan is all over himself when AeRa confessed it has been him all along. PSJ is quite cute acting all giggly.

DongMan was amusing when he was all grumpy towards JooMan in that epilogue. Hahahha Forgive him DM, he knows nothing.

JM: I feel that he is conflicted on what he wants. He cares for SH but has a nagging attraction towards YJ. He is tempted with that pretty little thing and what she can do for his ambition. Don't sell you heart JM.

SH: I like her loyalty but at times feel that JM doesnt deserve that devotion. I so want her to be her own woman and not shackle her happiness to a man.

Fairy Landlady: I get a feel that she was kinda something when she was younger. Coach Hwang looks up to her, wonder what she did. Did I miss anything in her storyline?

That Nam-il is a cute jerk. Wonder how he will fit in the storyline. Will he be a victim of HyeRan's machinations? Or something else. (I wonder how AR and SH knows him. They spoke of him like they know him well.)

DM: Hopefully he will listen to Coach. If TakSu will fight him soon, I would want DM to have the advantage and prove to that jerk that he is not all that. Also just want to move past TakSu. As much as he is amusing, i am getting impatient for DM to wipe that smirk off that conceited face.

HyeRan and Kyung Ku is still in the storyline. Wonder what trouble they will cause.

I am looking forward to DM and his father. Want to see how that will be. Also, DongHee keeping tabs on her brother's MMA progress and not telling the parentals is sweet. Seems like she cares a lot for her brother. Would want a scene between them soon as well.

The recap is here, let me relive this episode all over again aaahhh ramyeon will never be the same again HAHAHA

This is the sort of cringey awkward cute I love with friends to lovers - nearly over the top, but still funny, and it tells you so much about their relationship as it transitions from platonic to romantic. I love the honesty, how smitten they are with each other. You can really see how their friendship plays such a big role in what they're like as a couple.

I quite like how assertive Dong Man with the romantic things, and how Ae Ra buckles up anytime Dong Man speaks his mind. It's a new dynamic and I wonder how much longer before Ae Ra gets a full grip on the fact that she's dating her best friend who is also her first love. (This will ruin my image of dating for years to come hahahaha jk)

Joo Man and Sul Hee just don't meet halfway anymore, and I agree that a break up would be good. Also I feel like Ye Jin somehow set up the entire night to have Joo Man to herself. That really bugs me, she put on an act and everything. Why would she post about it??

I adore this drama so much! In hindsight I should have known that watching another version of April and Andy's (Parks and Rec) adorable cat/dog romance would kill me emotionally, but it's just... such a great death. Their interactions are so sweet they leave an acidic aftertaste in my mouth!
The 'all or nothing' speech hit very close to home - I ruined a lot of great friendships by turning them into relationships and a lot of potentially great romances never came to be because of that overwhelming fear of change.
I don't share Sul Hee's nurturing nature but I understand her and admire her. She's a product of her society and accepted the assigned role with joy instead of mutiny. Joo Man's talk of always feeling like a bad guy made me honestly despise him. I don't want them together anymore and the door closing behind him made me feel a mixture of schadenfreude and pity.

Actually it was the truth. SH has turned into the person where JM is responsible for her happiness and she plays no active role in her life. He's just tired of having to always do that. She had/has? other interests and hobbies in life. What has stopped her from pursuing them when JM got a good job and he started making money? I mean she wouldn't even allow him to splurge on her... what's he supposed to do?

I think JM is obsessed with taking care of people - in a sense he's a nurturer like SH, but he also constantly needs to feel like a knight saving the day, when SH is content with just the idea of her loved ones being happy. she wants to live a small life where her emotional needs come before physical ones. I don't hate JM for entering the rat race, I hate him for making SH feel like she isn't enough - or that 'enough' is never 'good enough', if that makes any sense.
SH was never interested in having a career and that's awesome for me, but I hope she finds something she's good at - maybe volunteering?

I really like your assessment of JM. I don't think it's wrong to dream bigger. SH says she wants to stay the same, but I think she's mainly saying that because the changes that are suddenly happening are really scary, so she's clinging tighter to how things were. JM isn't doing anything to mitigate that fear with the lying and lying by omission.

2

I totally agree with you @lollypip... esp about SH and JM. JM is the typical nice guy who's a nice person but a bad boyfriend in the sense that he wants to do whats good but doesn't know how to not cross the line between being a nice person and being a good bf. HJ knew that and exploited it. Let's see where that goes. SH is also a problem...i don't think JM knows how to say it well. But he said it right in this episode. Things change. People change. How can someone stay the same the entire time???? She reminds me of those girls whose lives revolve around their bf...they don't have any activities of their own...their whole live and happiness comes from being in a relationship and they look to their bf to make them happy. I think they need this break so both of them can find themselves... SH needs to learn how to take care of her self and make herself happy - including having other hobbies and things that don't revolve around ur bf - she needs to listen to her mom's advice from the last episodes and JM needs to learn how to be nice but not cross that line between being a nice person and being a good bf.

PS Gurl, how is u still in a relationship with no sex????

AR and DM....words cant express how I feel!!!!!! Cant wait to see how things progress. HR doesn't know shit!! These people have been in love with each other for a loooooonng time... and have been friends with each other in that time period. Aint nothing breaking them up.

Wed/Thurs w/ Ji Chang-wook: Keep it coming, 100 won coins!
Fri/Sat w/ Yoon Shi-yoon: Get me another cash register, STAT!
Sunday: Here I come, Korean beef. We all have worked hard.

i even drew a map charting relationships - in a way everyone in kdrama has kissed everyone. As we can't upload photos I will jot in down:

Ji Chang wook > kissed Yoona in K2 > Yoona probably kissed Lee Seung Gi cause they dated irl > Lee Seung Gi kissed Ha Ji Won in King2hearts > and Ha Ji Won kissed Ji Chang Wook in Empress Ki ( one complete circle haha )

Meanwhile in the outer circle :
Ji Chang wool kissed Kang Ha Neul in a musical > Kang Ha neul was kissed by Kim Ji Won in The Heirs > KJW and PSJ have kissed ( and hopefully will continue to kiss ) in Fight My way > PSJ kissed Go Ara in Hwarang > Go Ara kissed Lee Seung Gi in you're all surrounded ( refer to previous kissing circle )

I might be one of the few who is equally interested in the SH and JM storyline, and am very curious about what happens next.

JM needs to grow a spine, and SH needs to see life beyond JM. Also, that social media pic suggests that the accident, boxes et al were a huge, big charade to get JM into the house. Gah!

This episode peaked my interested in SH & JM again. Where are you taking us writers? So far their relationship is super realistic...which yes can be a bummer. Ye-Jin is so petty and awful.

Can't wait to discuss further after episode 12 recap is posted! I really like how the writing has presented the story of these flawed - very real - individuals.

I love friends to lovers stories, and Ae Ra and Dong Man are hitting the right awkwardly adorable notes.
I have a bad feeling about Dong Man's lack of ground game.
SH and JM need to break up.

I think he's weakness in groundwork is a good twist...becos we always assumed from earlier epi that he would thrash tak su. Esp DM's height and built gives him even more advantage. But it's true-to-life, MMA is a lot about groundwork too.

i will keep saying this until this comes true, jm & sh need to break up ASAP!

I'm guessing landlady is Aera's mum and Nam Il is her maybe half-blood bro, that's why in the preview for ep12, landlady tells Nam Il (who seems interested in Aera) that Aera is out of bounds. So the appearance of Nam Il could be what forces landlady to reveal her relationship with Aera...

Our OTP is so sweet and cute they're giving me a toothache :-D Loving PSJ's many expressions and actions, he's such a great actor!

Oh and I dunno Korean culture but it seems that Koreans sometimes name their businesses after their kids? E.g. In an earlier epi when SH's dad was talking to JM, he said that when SH was born he put up her name and took down the names of her 3 older brothers. And remember when Aera was hosting the Daechon scallop festival, there was a drunk ahjusshi dancing in front of the stage and Aera called out to his wife to take him away, she referred to him as "father of xxx"..I'm guessing she saw the name of his shop (which is also his son's name) emblazoned on his apron...later we see that he and his wife serve them dinner on the beach..

So when Nam Il told Aera that he was the son of Namil villa's owner, she immediately knew his name was Nam Il even though they are complete strangers.

Nam-Il was discussed in episode 3 I believe, when we first saw them hang out on the rooftop. They talked about the new owner moving in to the villa, saying she was Nam-Il's mom. They've never seen Nam-il but that's what their villa is named after.

They discussed Nam-Il earlier in the episode in the passing. Didn't even think he would actually be part of the story!

Mom and Nam-Il are just two mysterious people that I`m so curious to be unveiled hopefully next episode.

I feel like the mom is more related to Dong Man because the pictures she showed to the motel owner focused more on Dong Man than Ae Ra, and the way she cheered on Dong Man - it's like she knows every event of him. She bought the building too. Like for some reason, whatever she has and her interest seem to be pointing arrows to Dong Man. And perhaps, her straight down rejection on Nam-Il taking interest in Ae Ra is because she's Dong Man's girl.. But we`ll see..... this series get more awesome....

I love how ridiculously awkward they are at dating, but at the same time neither Ae Ra and Dong Man are beating around bushes. They are always straight forward at each other, saying out what and how they feel and if they continue this, they will definitely in it for a long run. Communication is key important in the relationship, which sadly the other couple is lacking now. Sul Hee misses the days she and Jong Man talk things out, and I believe she too needs to grow and need to self-reflect away from their relationship. She's become too independent in their relationship - Ae Ra while being in relationship with Dong Man doesn't stop pursuing her dream. Being an MMA announcer is killing two birds in one stone - she gets to fulfill her dream and be by Dong Man's side.

I too think that the landlady might be related to Dong Man, not Ae Ra, for some reason. Maybe Dong Man's dad and mom raised him as their son, but he's actually the landlady's long lost son? And Nam Il is the son from a different husband/man? she is definitely someone of means and position in society (remember the department store issue with banning the shoplifting wife/mistress ) and maybe she had to "give up" her baby Dong Man because she wasn't married to the baby daddy.

When Dong Man asked Ae Ra not to ever think about Wrist Guy, I thought to myself, omg, Ae Ra please tell him he's Wrist Guy. And then in her next line, SHE DID!! I love these two together.

I agree with you LollyPip about Seol Hee and Joo Man. They're both to blame. And they need to decide if they want to put in effort in their relationship or not. Seol Hee needs a hobby! Her whole life cannot just revolve around Joo Man. They need their own space to be themselves.

I really don't like the answers Joo-man is giving Seol-hee, it's like he just realised he doesn't like/love her like he thought he did and now he want's to find a way to stop things.

PSJ is really playing the character SO WELL. it's so realistic and gratifying to see DM go from cute, friendly, awkward to serious and protective and sort of "in charge." also i LOVE those hidden smiles. it's so DM. still sees the humor in things, laughing at AR though he's clearly fallen for her too.

This episode was pretty slow probably because we were combing through the awkwardness, lol. The build up to the relationship was so strong and like I'm sure many agree, we could all feel the awkwardness. I was yelling at my screen "just act normal", but i guess it's hard when you just turned a lifelong friendship into a relationship.

That said, I want to discuss Joo-Man. This episode actually made me really interested in their relationship, now I DEFINITELY want to see them breakup. With the little glimpses we see of Joo-Man, we see he's totally self-absorbed, whether around Seol Hee or Dong-Man and Ae-ra. It's not even like he is in his own little world, but he actively goes out of his way to ignore his surroundings and those around him. He's just not a good guy, and I think he knows that since he was complaining that he's always the bad guy around Seol Hee.

He really makes the friendship dynamic between the four of them awkward, like he's not really apart of them...but sort of is. Today was the first episode since ep 1 that I see him actively act as Dong-Man's best friend. And it's great, how visually we can see them visually drift apart, before seol hee and hoo-man used to walk side to side, but now Aera and Dong-Man walks in-between them.

Joo-man is getting to be really unlikeable and we're at the point where he's no longer redeemable I think. That said, I agree, Seol needs to get a life of her own outside of Joo-Man or the next person she dates. I can understand in that one sense where too-man is frustrated with her because he probably feels like she's suffocating him and the fact she wants to stay the same in their relationship forever...like people change over time, even if your relationship is stagnant, the world around you is not.

That said, I'm surprised as Seol Hee's best friend Aera hasn't taken notice of her situation, especially since Seol is hyper aware of Ae-ra's issues and it blows my mind that best friends don't talk to each other about what's going on in their life.

I'm a huge amount madder at Joo-man than Seol-hee at this point. I see what he's doing to her (and has done to her in the past, judging by flashbacks) as tantamount to gaslighting. While being a faithful, kind girlfriend who's facilitated his career advancement, she's told their problems are her fault while he flirts around with someone he feels drawn to. I actually didn't realize it was physically possible for me to be this disgusted by Ahn Jae Hong. I don't think Joo-man gets a pass to claim he's "burdened" and "bored" at this point. He should have thought of that back when he was using Seol-hee's single-minded devotion to his benefit and getting hooked on being the only thing she cares about. If he wants her to do and be more, he shouldn't have spent these years treating her like she's stupid while using her at the same time. Sorry not sorry, I'm over him.

Amen. Yes, it's important for SH to learn to let the other person give in order to have a healthy relationship, but her issues are on a completely different level than lying and sneaking around (whatever JM's intentions may or may not have been). His dissatisfaction with their relationship is not a free pass for him to do as he pleases and then blame SH for his issues. He complains that SH always makes him feel like a bad guy, but maybe that's because he's doing bad things - or at the very least, things that definitely fall into a blurry grey area.

Well, Show... I know I have told you this before but: DM and Ae ra rule and the rest just suck! Joo man is washy, Seol hee is weak; I hate the intern even though I never watch any of her scenes... hye-ran is the most stupid stalker i have ever seen, and believe me, I have seen awful stalkers in Dramaland, and some characters like Kyung-ku, the landlady and Tak-soo... I just cannot understand them, nor i understand why are they on this show...
But because of Ae ra and DM... well... I keep on tuning you for a while...

i think SH and JM will breakup. SH will then become a power blogger (i recall JM said she wanted to be a blogger in one of the earlier episodes). maybe thats where her passion lies. from the kimchi ad, SH seems to have the ability to eat deliciously. so maybe a food blogger? hehe
dunno what will happen to JM though. he needs to cut ties with YJ too if he truly wants to succeed on his own efforts. YJ will use her family connections, in some sense its good, but it wont be as satisfying to succeeding with your own effort.

I actually got a little pissed seeing Dong Man not giving his 100% against Doo Ho. As athlete he should know that giving his best in a match is a form of respect to your opponent. By refusing to KO him and prolong the match, he was basically humiliating Doo Ho there, in front of his wife. I know he had goof intentions but it wasn't right at all.
