Circle: Episode 6
by festerfaster
Memories are at the crux of this drama, both in a literal and figurative sense, and especially so for a couple of key characters this episode. For Jung-yeon, it’s a source of identity crisis and a question of whom to trust, while in 2037, it’s an unwanted burden that pushes Ho-soo to the edge in his desperation to be rid of them. But at what cost? Is someone’s right to remember more important than someone else’s right to forget?
EPISODE 6 RECAP
Little Woo-jin and Bum-gyun enter their home one Sunday to find their dad hurrying out to work. They wander into another room, where Byul stands with her back to them. When asked what she’s doing, she hands Woo-jin the Bluebird storybook.
Woo-jin thinks she wants him to read it again, and Bum-gyun gets annoyed that a full-grown adult can’t speak or read. Woo-jin defends her, saying that she doesn’t know Earth’s languages yet, when suddenly Byul says: “Bluebird.” As the boys look at her in surprise, she points to the book and repeats the words, as if testing out how it sounds.
Part 1: Beta Project
Jung-yeon smashes the star and finds a rolled-up note with “Byul ♥ Woo-jin” written on it. Stunned, she falls back into the seat and looks at her reflection. Tears streak down her face as she asks: “What… am I?”
Woo-jin chases after the ambulance with all his might, but gets left behind on the road. Returning to the hospital, he tells Chief Hong about the ambulance, and Hong immediately calls in the license plate number. But then Min-young, who’d recognized the bluebird logo on the vehicle, makes the connection and realizes that it wasn’t an ambulance but a blood donation van.
She takes out her phone and shows Woo-jin the selfies she’d taken after donating blood in front of that same van. Woo-jin recognizes one of the students entering the van in the background—she was the first to die by jumping off the roof. Min-young confirms that the girl had nosebleeds and headaches before her death… much like Min-young herself.
Woo-jin realizes then that the bluebird his brother had referred to was the van. But then, Chief Hong gets a report from his station about the vehicle: It was scrapped earlier that year, so it no longer exists in the system.
Meanwhile, Jung-yeon is still reeling from the Byul discovery and sits curled up in a ball, looking frightened. Her phone lights up with a call from “Dad,” and she doesn’t look inclined to pick up.
Chief Hong asks if they have any more information for him, and says that the pen in Professor Han’s possession isn’t enough to start an investigation on. Min-young begins to tell him about Jung-yeon, but is silenced by Woo-jin.
Once they’re alone, Min-young yells at him for stopping her from revealing the Professor’s alien connection. Woo-jin points out that if they started talking about those things, they would lose Chief Hong’s trust. Min-young huffs in frustration that they missed Bum-gyun by a few minutes.
Woo-jin sighs that she’s better than him, since he didn’t believe his own brother until he saw things with his own eyes. He assures her that they’ll find Bum-gyun since they now have a clue. He smiles a little and says that he shares a telepathic connection with his brother since they’re twins. He bids her goodnight, then spends all night wandering the streets looking for Bum-gyun.
Woo-jin ends up at Eunsung Mental Hospital again in the morning, and pushes past the police tape into the room where Bum-gyun was confined. And this time, he notices a CCTV in one corner, blinking red.
At the police station, Chief Hong’s skeptical partner tells him that none of the CCTVs inside the hospital are working, and none of the cameras on the streets caught sight of the van last night. Hong orders him to look into the person who modified the blood donation van, since that is their only lead right now.
Woo-jin visits the police station, and Chief Hong tells him that Eunsung never employed Professor Han. Woo-jin asks for the hospital’s employee roster, saying that he’ll go meet each person individually. Chief Hong notes Woo-jin’s exhausted face and clothes from last night and asks if he’s eaten yet. Promising to meet the employees himself, he tells Woo-jin to go rest.
Woo-jin finally goes back to his apartment and finds Jung-yeon waiting for him in the hallway. Jung-yeon hands him the note she found inside the star and says in a scared little voice, “I think I’m Byul.”
She apologizes, but Woo-jin says flatly that she shouldn’t be sorry since she didn’t know anything. She says she’s sorry for not knowing, and he replies that she’s just here to make excuses for being innocent.
He turns to go in, and Jung-yeon stops him, asking plaintively, “What do I do now?” She realizes that he was right about her being an alien, but doesn’t know what to do next.
Woo-jin’s eyes fill with angry tears as he flings the same words back at her. He asks what he should do now that the girl he wanted to trust turns out to be an alien, and his brother, whom he didn’t want to believe, is missing because of him.
After that outburst, Woo-jin calms down and lets her come in. She tells that “bluebird” was the first word she spoke when she awoke from her coma three years ago. In flashback, we see Professor Han asking rather eagerly if she really doesn’t remember anything, then telling her that she’s his daughter Han Jung-yeon.
In the present, Jung-yeon asks what happened to Byul and how she (Jung-yeon) ended up without her memories. Woo-jin says that his dad had left for a trip overseas, telling them that he would drop her off at a facility on his way. That was the last time he saw either of them. He shows her a picture of his dad, but Jung-yeon doesn’t recognize him.
They sit quietly together for a long time, until Woo-jin brings up Professor Han. He says that her “dad” has all the answers they’re looking for and asks for her help in investigating the man. Jung-yeon realizes that after all that, Woo-jin still trusts her, and tearfully thanks him for it.
Bum-gyun wakes up in the basement of a building with a barred door. He remembers Woo-jin running after the van, then gets sudden pain in his head, accompanied by a nosebleed. Oh no, this is too soon! Then he notices the CCTV cameras in the room and angrily throws objects at them.
Professor Han watches this footage on his laptop, sitting in his office, and sees the camera finally fall from one of Bum-gyun’s shots. He hisses in frustration, then shuts the laptop as soon as Professor Park and Sunbae Lee walk in. Han gives Sunbae Lee an address and his car keys and asks him to pick up something he’d left there.
Professor Park gets suspicious and gets into the car with Lee, asking to be dropped off on the way. Suddenly “recalling” that he left his bag back in the office, he sends Sunbae Lee to fetch it, and takes advantage of his absence to copy down the address he’d just keyed into the GPS system. Noting the area, Park gets a speculative look on his face and wonders what Professor Han is up to.
One of Eunsung Hospital’s employees tells Chief Hong that she doesn’t recognize Professor Han as having worked there. She mentions some odd rumors floating around the hospital before it closed, though she emphasizes that they were groundless. Chief Hong asks to hear them anyway, and is told of patients claiming to be subject to experiments, seeing ghosts, and even a death in the basement.
Chief Hong meets with one of the patients who spoke about being experimented upon and shows him Han’s picture, asking if this was the man who conducted the experiments. But the man is unresponsive and just sits there blankly, and the nurse tells him that the patient hasn’t spoken in a year.
Chief Hong sees that he’s not likely to get a response, and turns to leave the room… just as the patient says, “It wasn’t him.” Chief Hong turns back intently, eager to hear more.
While the professor is out, Jung-yeon tries a ring of keys on his locked office until one of them opens the door, letting them inside to search. They don’t know exactly what they’re looking for, but they hurry inside to rifle through the desk and bookshelves for clues.
But Professor Han arrives home soon after, and they don’t seem to hear him. He’s speaking to Jung-yeon’s therapist on the phone, who sighs that they must recover Jung-yeon’s lost memories quickly, because Byul knows the secret to the Stable Care System. Han clarifies that what they need to find are the memories that were suppressed, and his associate emphasizes the need to hurry, because the experiment comes with serious side effects. He grumbles, “If only that jerk hadn’t done that to Byul, we wouldn’t be in this situation.”
Suddenly, he hears a noise from his office. Woo-jin and Jung-yeon freeze as a book from the shelf falls to the ground. When Woo-jin picks it up, something slips out from the pages. It’s a plastic-wrapped picture of Professor Han at the entrance of Eunsung Hospital.
Just then, Professor Han enters the office and Woo-jin quickly hides the picture. When asked what they’re doing here, Jung-yeon nervously makes the excuse that she’d brought Woo-jin to look at the books in his office and apologizes for coming in without permission. She and Woo-jin sweat under her father’s scrutiny, and he looks at Woo-jin through narrowed eyes. But then he offers to pick out books for Woo-jin, and they relax to have him buy their story.
The two get back to Woo-jin’s apartment, and he shows Jung-yeon the picture. Taking it out of the plastic, he says that it’s decisive evidence that Han was involved with the hospital. There are other pictures behind the first one though, and they look through them until suddenly, Woo-jin pauses at one.
Meanwhile at the hospital, Chief Hong presses the patient for the identity of the man who conducted experiments, asking if it was Professor Han. He’s stunned when the man corrects him with a different name: “Kim Kyu-chul!”
Woo-jin stares at the photo, wondering, “Dad?… That’s my dad!” In the picture along with Professor Han is his very own father. Woo-jin looks up at Jung-yeon in shock and confusion: “Why is my dad here?”
Part 2: Brave New World
The penthouse sanctum of Human B’s chairman is breached, and as the security staff scans each room for an intruder, Jung-yeon walks easily into his office, dressed as one of the staff.
She plants a bug on his personal computer, and on her way out, she pauses as her eyes fall on something.
Back at her lair, her eyes widen as she goes through some data and comes across the picture of Woo-jin in 2022.
This was a month ago. Now, Jung-yeon walks into Joon-hyuk’s office and says that Woo-jin is in Smart Earth. He asks her if the chairman has Woo-jin and who the chairman could be. It makes Jung-yeon think of the chairman in his penthouse, and she seems to think one thing and then decide to say something else—merely that she’s looking into it.
Then Jung-yeon gets a notification on her phone and taps an icon to get first person view from Ho-soo’s eyes. Ah, she’s hacked into the system (to his chip?) to keep tabs on him.
So, by the time Ho-soo runs back to the Investigation Unit with Secretary Shin at his heels, Jung-yeon and Joon-hyuk have disappeared. Ho-soo instantly realizes that Bluebird has been monitoring his movement.
He puts his hand on the table, and the surface changes to become a screen with a monitor that shows his own face. Speaking directly to Jung-yeon, he tells her that she has no right to criticize Human B when she fools around with people’s memories herself.
He gets a splitting headache and has to run to the washroom. Ho-soo tries to take a pill for it but drops it in the sink with shaking hands. He throws the box of pills in anger, and his chips lights up to calm him. It can’t make the headache go away though, and Ho-soo bend over in pain.
Suddenly, a memory surfaces and he envisions himself running into a room, calling out his girlfriend’s name in panic. Then he stops and his face twists in grief as he registers her body hanging from the ceiling. As he breaks down in the past, his present self weeps with remembered pain.
Secretary Shin reports that Bluebird was monitoring Ho-soo’s memory. That means Joon-hyuk knows that Ho-soo’s reporting to them, thus making Ho-soo a liability.
Ho-soo barges into the office and asks one more time for his memories to be blocked. His voice raises as he calls this his right as a Smart Earth citizen, and his desperation is palpable. So Deputy Chief Lee is forced to admit one additional detail: that they actually can’t block his memories at the moment, because Bluebird locked the process when she unblocked the memories, and they’ve been unable to crack the code.
At this, Ho-soo despairs, “How long will I have to live like this?” Lee tells him that the fastest solution is to find Bluebird. Ho-soo takes a deep breath and asks for his Care Chip to be completely disconnected from the system, since that’s the only way to keep Bluebird from monitoring his memories.
Deputy Chief Lee warns that disabling the chip will isolate Ho-soo from Human B and they won’t be able to protect him any more. Ho-soo says bitterly that the most dangerous thing has already happened to him.
After he leaves, Secretary Shin worries whether they’ll be okay to let him do this, pointing out that Ho-soo had undergone psychiatric treatment for his trauma before the memories were removed. Lee just says that that will make him more desperate to ensure they’ll be blocked again.
At an undisclosed location, Joon-hyuk asks Jung-yeon why it’s her, here now, and not Woo-jin. She asks if hej.. got his memories back, since the last time she’d seen him, he had no recollection of who he was. Joon-hyuk says that he has no memories of his own, and learned everything about himself by going through Woo-jin’s memory footage.
He adds that he noticed how Woo-jin had always looked at Jung-yeon. So why is she alone now, instead of being with him? Jung-yeon just stares at him as tears rolls down her cheeks.
Detective Ha grills Chief Hong on Joon-hyuk’s relationship with Bluebird, complaining that he’s the only one in the dark. Noting that he’s also got something with Min-young, he grumbles that Joon-hyuk’s been busy romancing alongside working. Chief Hong gets a call from his superior who asks why Minister Park is running background checks on Joon-hyuk.
Meanwhile, Joon-hyuk tells Jung-yeon about this minister, whom they had once known as Professor Park. He explains that Mayor Yoon has asked for his help, but Jung-yeon is distrustful of the man, since he was the last person Woo-jin spoke to before his disappearance.
Joon-hyuk remembers that in Woo-jin’s memory, Professor Park had helped them. So, despite Jung-yeon’s bad feeling about it, he insists that he has to meet the minister in person.
He says as much to Chief Hong in their VR chat, that Minister Park may know how to find Woo-jin. Chief Hong notes that there’s a lot about the minister that’s fishy, from his running of background checks to his willingness to go after Human B all of a sudden. Joon-hyuk shares those thoughts, and figures he’ll ask when he meets him in person. Chief Hong scoffs that Joon-hyuk isn’t important enough to meet a minister, but Joon-hyuk has his ways.
He starts by visiting the mayor, who’s initially unwilling to facilitate a meeting. So Joon-hyuk asks him to pass on a simple message: “I want to talk about Professor Kim Kyu-chul.”
The mayor says that he won’t ask questions now, but that that stance might change in the event of any problems. He also asks if keeping Ho-soo by his side is wise, but Joon-hyuk says he’ll take care of the matter.
Ho-soo monitors the Investigation Unit, and when Joon-hyuk leaves the room, he slips a transmitter into his jacket pocket. So when Joon-hyuk gets a text from Minister Park, asking to meet him in Ordinary Earth, Ho-soo and the Human B team follow.
As Joon-hyuk waits at the rendezvous spot, a homeless man walks up and hands him a note. It tells Joon-hyuk that the Human B team is nearby, and that the minister will contact him later. When Joon-hyuk leaves without meeting anyone, the Human B team realizes he must have caught on to them.
Ho-soo confronts the homeless man to demand the identity of the note-giver. They’re surprised to hear it was a man—not Bluebird, then—but the homeless man can’t offer any more helpful information. Looking eerie in his determination, Ho-soo orders Secretary Shin to insert a chip into the man, so they can go through his memory and see who gave him the note.
In exchange for hefty compensation, they gain the man’s permission to insert a chip and hook him up, whereupon Ho-soo scans through his memories. They come upon the scene where he was given the note to pass along, and everyone gapes to recognize the sender: Minister Park.
When they report this to Deputy Chief Lee, he murmurs that the minister is turning this into a big issue. Secretary Shin is concerned that while Bluebird is a rogue and can’t use legal means, Minister Park can end everything for them.
Ho-soo asks Lee if he’ll let this happen, and Lee asks Ho-soo if he’s truly willing to do anything to stop it. Emphasis on anything.
Soon thereafter, Ho-soo walks into the Investigation Unit, where Joon-hyuk sits alone recalling Jung-yeon’s warning that Ho-soo is completely disconnected from Human B—and therefore dangerous.
And sure enough, Ho-soo steps inside and levels a tranquilizer gun at Joon-hyuk, face determined. Joon-hyuk asks if inserting a chip and removing his memory is the best idea they could come up with. Ho-soo is clearly conflicted, but he cries that Joon-hyuk has to stop his investigation, because his surfacing memories are causing him immense pain.
Joon-hyuk rises carefully from his seat and says that he understands people, and Ho-soo isn’t the type to shoot him. Ho-soo grasps the gun harder and warns that Joon-hyuk is wrong about him. Joon-hyuk asks him not to do it, saying he doesn’t want to lose his memories again.
Ho-soo wrestles with his conscience, face twisted with tears and indecision, and finally lowers the gun. But all of a sudden, Joon-hyuk reels back from a shot and looks down at the dark sticking out of the chest. Secretary Shin stands at the door with a henchman holding a gun.
Joon-hyuk passes out, and the men carry him out of the room past Ho-soo, who looks conflicted. As they take him down to the garage, Jung-yeon records the scene and sends the clip to Chief Hong.
An unconscious Joon-hyuk is taken to an operating room and laid out on a table. Deputy Chief Lee enters with a doctor and gives the order to proceed, watching with a smirk on his face. The doctor picks up a scalpel and holds it to Joon-hyuk’s neck, ready to insert the chip. Noooo!
Just in the nick of time, Chief Hong rushes into the room with his cops, yelling for them to stop and holding out his badge. Lee’s men hold the detectives back, however, and Lee tells them that it’s illegal to enter Smart Earth without a warrant and therefore they have no jurisdiction.
So they can only watch helplessly as Lee orders the procedure to continue, and the doctor takes up his scalpel again and holds it to Joon-hyuk’s neck…
And then, another voice calls out, “Yes, it’s illegal.” It’s Minister Park, and he’s come with reinforcements in uniforms. He points out that by Smart Earth law, the chip cannot be inserted without the person’s consent. He scoffs at the deputy chief advertising Smart Earth as crime-free, only to do this. Lowering his speech, he addresses Lee with contempt, asking how he can still be acting like he used to as a student.
Chief Hong’s men arrest Deputy Chief Lee, Secretary Shin, and the rest, while Hong finally reaches Joon-hyuk’s side. Minister Park looks genuinely concerned as he looks at Joon-hyuk’s prone form.
When Joon-hyuk wakes up in Ordinary Earth, Min-young tells him that the minister wants to meet him as soon as possible. So Joon-hyuk heads over to the Smart Earth Investigation Unit, where he receives a visit from the minister, who studies Joon-hyuk’s face and asks if he is Woo-jin’s older brother. At Joon-hyuk’s confirmation, he breaks into a wide smile and asks how he’s been all these years. With real relief, he explains that he’d thought Joon-hyuk also disappeared back then, along with Woo-jin.
Joon-hyuk says that Minister Park was the last person to speak to Woo-jin, and the minister confirms that that’s true—yet he wasn’t the last person to see him. He’d been worried when he heard Woo-jin was going to meet Professor Han, but by the time he got there himself, Woo-jin had vanished.
Jung-yeon watches through the camera of Joon-hyuk’s laptop as he asks if Professor Han had kidnapped Woo-jin to start Human B, insistent that the professor is the Human B chairman. After all, Professor Han knew all the technologies needed to run Human B, because they were developed by his research team.
Minister Park becomes very still for a moment, then admits that there is a connection between Han’s research team and Human B. That’s why he’s been tracking down all the members of the research team—but two of them are untraceable: Professor Han and Woo-jin.
He explains that in 2022, there was a small, little-known investment presentation for Smart Earth, and that’s where he’d seen a twentysomething man. Minister Park shares his suspicion that Woo-jin may not have been a victim at all, but rather the mastermind behind Human B. What if Woo-jin disappeared intentionally and became the chairman?
Joon-hyuk shakes his head violently in denial, insisting that Woo-jin would never do that. But then Jung-yeon’s voice cuts in to say, “It is possible.”
She appears on the laptop screen, and Minister Park recognizes her instantly. Joon-hyuk asks what she means, and she shows them the picture of Woo-jin from 2022, and drops a bomb: It was taken in the Human B chairman’s office.
In flashback, we see that when Jung-yeon was planting something on the chairman’s computer, something had caught her eye on her way out. It was a painting on the wall — the same one hanging behind Woo-jin in the picture.
“I’m scared too,” says Jung-yeon. “I’m scared that Woo-jin could be the chairman.”
COMMENTS
Ha. I love how any time we have a theory about something, the show comes out and addresses it first. It’s a refreshing change from the usual practice of ignoring obvious conclusions until every character begins to look like an idiot. Not that our heroes in Brave New World have been particularly bright today.
Ho-soo and Deputy Chief Lee caught on to all of Joon-hyuk and Bluebird’s moves through impressive feats of deduction and good old surveillance, while Joon-hyuk pretty much walked into the tranquilizer dart situation. He might have been confident that Ho-soo wouldn’t hurt him, but how did he not anticipate Human B using some nefarious means to shut him up? Also, what was the point of pushing Ho-soo to make morally questionable choices, if Secretary Shin was going to go dart Joon-hyuk and take the matter off Ho-soo’s hands anyway?
But at least there is progress in the hunt for Woo-jin. It’s interesting that the character I dislike most in Part 1 is apparently a good guy in Part 2. I still don’t trust Minister Park—there’s something shady about the way the actor plays him—but it seems at least plausible that Woo-jin may have actively helped with the creation of the Stable Care System instead of just being a passive victim to Human B’s machinations. This would considerably deepen the mystery, since the Woo-jin we have come to know in Beta Project is not someone who would willingly take away another person’s right to remember. Woo-jin was idealistic in his ambition to give people suffering from trauma a choice, whereas the chairman clearly doesn’t care whose rights are violated, so long as Smart City remains crime-free.
I really love Chief Hong, too, because while his character was set up to be a little ridiculous, his diligence towards Bum-gyun’s case in Part 1 is one of the few things that’s going right for Woo-jin and Jung-yeon. It’s bad enough that they’re chasing dangerous conspiracies in an effort to find Bum-gyun, but it would have been worse if no one in a position of authority believed or helped them. As is so often the rule in these stories. Hong is clearly a competent detective, with a strong streak of loyalty, and I adore this show for making him such an excellent father figure for both boys spanning two timelines.
I really appreciated the moment when Joon-hyuk tells Jung-yeon that he learned about her through Woo-jin’s memories. It’s clear that Woo-jin’s fondness for her affected how Joon-hyuk sees Jung-yeon. He knows how paranoid Bum-gyun used to be about her, but he’s trusting Woo-jin’s perspective and therefore trusting Jung-yeon to help him find Woo-jin. There was also this poignant beat, where he asks why Woo-jin is not with her, when he used to look at her all the time. Woo-jin may have had feelings for Jung-yeon, but something pushed Woo-jin onto a different path. The mystery now is to find out if Woo-jin walked down that road willingly.

I really thought they are going to read JH's memories by inserting the chip. I don't want any chip to be inserted into JH and him to be constantly monitored via the chip.

Thanks for the recap! I really am loving the parallel between Woojin-Jungyeon and Bumgyun-Minyoung where they immediately trust the other. I also love how we don't linger on the moments where characters are having misunderstandings and they immediately settle things to quickly move on to things that matter.
Please have Yeo Jingoo ageless as Woojin in 2037. ?

Uh yes! I never expect any lovelines but I'm a sucker for characters who trusts each other just because. And yes, all these time I was calculating and analyzing how to have Woojin in 2037 in the form of Yeo Jingoo, but that wouldn't be possible would it? :(

Then we'd have more questions. Do aliens stop aging at 18yrs old or were they both part of some anti-aging, memory erasing
experiment?

Exactly! If I were those professor, I'd focus more on how on earth does Jungyeon/Byul has this anti-aging stuff going. I mean she doesn't even age a bit in 30 years, what all women actually want. Imagine selling this to the world and the amount of money you'll get lmao

Didn't they keep using actor Yeo Jin Goo in part 2 so we would recognize him? And didn't they use Kim Kang Woo instead of Ahn Woo Yeon so we would wonder about whether Joon Hyuk is Wool Jin or Bum Gyeon? That's what I assumed

Unless they are planning on some cameo... and for all the hard work Jingoo did playing the younger roles of the leads in the dramas, let those leads in turn play on behalf Jingoo as his adult counterpart. ? But I still really want Jingoo as Woojin tbh. 30 mins of YJG in a 12 episode drama will just never be enough.

I think the twin father's might in together with professor Han at first, to develop the care system then later they have opposite views and the father tries to stop them n also abandon the care system but failed and he died in the car accident or get killed off by Professor Han. The same car accident Jung Yeon/Byun was into and got into a coma.

Prof Park seems to have his own hidden agenda. I wonder if he knew something about the first experiment. Maybe after it went awry, the research is forbidden to be continued and now that he knew Prof Han is doing something behind his back, he want to use that knowledge for something bad. And by the unexpected animosity between him and Chief Lee, I guess they'll part ways soon in 2017.
Speaking of experiment, I'm curious whether they already decided on "artificial way to control emotions" topic from the very beginning, or if they only going with that topic after the twins' dad accidentally found Byeol. It seems like the early experiment didn't include erasing traumatizing memories which resulted in severe headache and nosebleed (which is what happened when smart city citizen started remembering their repressed memories).
It's also highly possible that Prof Han adopted Byeol in order to learn about her memory erasing mechanism (which I suspect is a way to protect herself) and later applied it as a further development for his research. An added process that they never made public when Human B was begin used widely.

Yknow i was thinking something similar with reguards to prof. Han and Byul only instead of studying memory erasing mechanisms, he wanted to study her supposed lack of emotions maybe?
Learning how she always remained the same - so stoic- no matter the situation seems pretty similar to the way memory chips try to maintain stable emotions.

Like you guys, I thought about something among the same lines. That Professor Park did look suspicious and when he adopted Byul, I guessed that he was personally using her for his own studies. Although I don't know whether it was for her memory erasing instinct or he ability to control her own emotions, I know he did not take her in just to be a good adoptive father. Hopefully, even more will be revealed. These double cliffhangers are killing me inside and out, but I still love them.

Poor Woojin never getting himself a good rest since his brother went missing though :(
I really can't wait for next week's episode anymore! I think his father erased Byul'd memories to put a halt to Professor Han's projects. What if he really isn't the dad to the twins and the brothers are part of the experiments as well.

I forgot if it was on the last recap's comments... Someone mentioned that they may not be brothers and I could ride on that theory as well. Gah anything can be possible in this show tbh...
During the phone call Professor Han had, the person on the other line mentioned, "If only he didn't erase Byul's memories..." And I think that refers to the Twins' dad.

On another note, I'm worried about Ho-Soo. He looks like he would do anything to block off his memories. I really don't want him to venture too deep into the dark side D:
Kudos to Lee Kikwang! He's doing a very good job portraying Ho-Soo and his angst especially against veterans like Kim Kang-woo.

오께!!!
So...
In ep.5 I was so sure the Chairman was Professor Han and WooJin was HoSoon,
하지만!!! Since I now know HoSoons age, that Idea's been scrapped....I'm thinking there is a chance that WooJin could be the Chairman.
It makes sense in a way - He had the initial idea (of erasing memories for ptsd patients), he himself must hv been pretty emotionally wrecked after all that with Bum Gyun...or maybe Professor Han persuaded him/Used Byul or Bum Gyun as leverage against him to persuade him to join the team?
Or maybe he kept working with professor Han undercover, trying to get more info but was eventually experimented on and lost some memories. (So he probably could hv forgotten MinYoung). So much could have happened in 20 years really.
Maybe due to experimenting, he lost his memories and developed HumanB for good purposes, yknow, to help people cope with pain...maintain order etc... But as time went by he "forgot" even more,(ie. some important memories were erased) the whole point of the system and completely changed due to having no links with anyone anymore. As seen in ep.1 WooJin will do what he has to do to live (not boycotting the exams like the other students, asking for that post soon after his sunbae died etc.) but cares deeply about those he loves ie. Bum Gyun. So if he doesnt remember those ppl...he may as well have become consumed in his work right? ( i accept any objections to this).
Also 혹시 그들의 아빠 회장님 예요??? (Hahaha, I'm hoping my hangeul skills shall improve forgive my pretentiousness haha.)
Seriously though, could their dad be the Chairman? I mean I thought he was dead but maybe...what if...just what if...TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK GUYS! (여러분 말해주세요!!!)
I'm guessing Dad and professor Han worked on smth together but dad changed his mind last minute and so was killed(?maybe?) thus delaying the project for 3 yrs (due to Byuls memory loss).
Aahh and yknow Yeo jin gu may actually play his future self (like quite a number of people were rooting for last recap)...in the poster, his shoulder clearly extends onto 2037 and if he is the chairman, it would make sense as to why that voice that was talking to deputy Lee was all garbled. I feel like the show was just hiding it from us viewers...however, this is smart earth...maybe the chairman has had too many altering procedures (maybe he's even friends with President Snow lol )

I felt so bad for both Jung yeon and woo Jin this episode. Both of them are having their illusions shattered one after the other and now they even have to doubt their own fathers. My poor children. ?
And how sweet was it to see that Jung Yeon was so grateful for woo Jin trusting her? It's a climate where you can't seem to trust anyone and her whole world has just been turned upside down. But woo jin's admission of trust is one bright hopeful spot for he currently.
One thing I'm curious about is, how did Min Young not end up like the others? And did she have a bug put in her?
It's really hard to see Ho Soo going down a dark path, but all the same, it's understandable. Also, joon Hyuk is wrong to underestimate him. Desperation makes all of us more dangerous and reckless.
I'm kind of shook by the possibility that woo Jin could be the Chairman but I'm not sure if I should believe the show. They've led us astray before! But if he is the chairman, then I wonder what made him take that path.
My heart twinged when joon Hyuk mentioned to Jung yeon how woo Jin was always watching her. Clearly they had a connection from the time he was a tiny person. And you can see why Jung yeon is so determined to find him. He's been lovely to her from the start. Somewhere along the way, woo Jin became the first formative connection she made.
No matter how helpful Minister Park is, I just don't trust him! He's off. ?
I cannot wait for Monday!

And with reguards to MiYoung, yeah she did hv a chip-via-bug in her, remember she told the kidnapper-uncle so when he was asking her to take his out and she showed him her scar behind her ear?
Though its not clear when the bug fot into her...it mightve been when she donated blood.
I wonder too how she didnt die...maybe due to her being a med student she was able to perform some radical proceedures?

SO GOOD. Just when I thought I had Circle figured out, it went "Nah girl, you don't even know half of it" because now that some major questions have been answered, out come new ones and I love that the mystery seems never ending.
Jung-yeon/Byul just looks so badass with her all black outfit, high ponytail and smoky eyes in 2037. GSY did really, really well with this character, while YJG arguably delivered the best acting in the whole cast (yes, even over Kim Kang-woo). Minister Park is still shifty to me so I don't trust him at all; although most of my feelings can be attributed to actor bias, since I've seen him play a lot of nefarious, scheming sageuk characters so I just automatically associate him with back-stabbing. I really like Ho-soo so I hope he doesn't turn into the dark side. Please please don't be the enemy...
On a side note, the casting in this drama is really spot on. There's an uncanny resemblance between the younger and older counterparts of Deputy Chief Lee and Dr. Min-young, and even sometimes I could see glimpses of younger Beom-gyun in Joon-hyuk. Well done, casting director!

This is sooo good! The fact that we know the status quo in 2037 increases the tension in 2017. How did Woo-Jin disappear? How did Bum-Gyun escape? I am guessing Woo-Jin rescued Jung-Yeon and Bum-Gyun together by making some deal with Prof. Han to willingly trade places with Bum-Gyun so he got the chip inserted too, downloaded all his memories and left them for Bum-Gyun so that Bum-Gyun can know what happened and go to find Woo-Jin again.
I have a hunch that the twin's dad did introduce Byul to Prof. Han but he was troubled by the experiments that he did something to make Byul lose all her memories. He is the guy Prof. Han cursed as the reason for all of this in this episode.
I also believe Minister Park has some ulterior motive. Just last episode. he was protective of Human B and was warning the mayor but now he wants to help take down the system. Sounds fishy!! But that setdown given by him to Sunbae Lee was soo satisfying to watch :D
The more I see Beta Project, the more I wanna stay in that timeline. Of course, it's mostly to see Yeo Jin Gu's very expressive face. He does everything so earnestly that I want him to succeed and find hyung soon.

Yes! Minister Park is fishy af but to see him embarrassing DC Lee like that was indeed very satisfying to watch. Well, Woojin never allowed himself to get bullied anyways by Lee Sunbae in 2017 anyways. Him sassing Lee Sunbae all the time is one of the best parts of 2017.
Yeo Jingoo's acting is just really... gahhh!!! His acting just feels so real that my heart aches for him everytime he appears on screen. From that scene where he tossed back to Jungyeon what he should do. And when he saw his dad's face on the picture. A very short scene but still the shock and fear on his face was delivered so perfectly.

Starting to see tiny cracks in this great drama- but not to the point of annoying yet. Like : minji still in killing spree, bumgyun superhuman ability to heal (like-there was so much blood before!!), joon hyuk not anticipating human b while confronting ho soo.. but the goodness still way overweigh the weird so its ok. Hope the show can be even better next week!!
I knew it! The father is related to the research! As soon as the name mentioned, i thought this is it, the confirmation!!
Bumgyun instantly trust yungyeon based on woojin's trust on her is so poignant. I curious on how they play this lowkey romantic undertone between woojin and jungyeon further.
On woojin is the chairman or not : i'm inclining to..yes, he is the chairman. but with his memory heavily tampered. Otherwise, the reason that makes woojin change must be carastrophic and i'm afraid imahinung what it would be.
On ministry park: i dont believe him. If prof han is mr shady mac shady, then he is mr opportunist. The actor really good at playing shady character. I still remember him in tree with deep roots and how i loathe his chaeacter i that drama.

Yes he bled so much in the previous episode I was fearful for his life! Probably they patched him up a little bit though. They wouldn't want their experiment dying on them. Joon-hyuk really didn't think things through when he confronted Ho-soo. That's one reason why I still can't exactly buy into him being future Bum-gyun. I mean, Bum-gyun is a genius, and he's. . . not so much.
I awwed when Joon-hyuk told Jung-yeon how Woo-jin was always looking at her. They seem to have built up such a nice connection between the two of them, with Woo-jin deciding to trust her over and over, and she in turn opening up to him, I can't see Woo-jin voluntarily leaving her or Bum-gyun unless he felt he had no choice. Woohoo, thanks for the episode 6 recap!
Like other people have commented, I'm wondering how Minyoung managed to escape the consequences of that bug? Hopefully we get to see how that happened.
Wondering if Woojin told Detective Hong about the CCTV? I thought that's what he ran to the police station for, but they didn't show him saying anything - unless I missed it?
Totally gasped and got shivers at the reveal of what happened to Hosoo's girlfriend. Poor baby! His storyline is honestly the one I'm most invested in in Part 2.
Loved festerfaster's comments on Detective Hong and his acting as a fatherly figure to the twins. I always feel relieved that at least there is some degree of competency and authority there to help the kids with the investigation.
Only other comment I have is that every time there's a scene where someone is doing chip insertion type surgery, I'm always cringing at the lack of sterility in the room, haha *tries hard to achieve suspension of disbelief* the timing of the "rescues" in that scene was kind of cheesy to me too. XD

Whenever I think I’m starting to get a clearer picture, the show just throws more questions in my face:
-Does that 2022 picture that Joon-hyuk received mean Woo-jin doesn’t disappear before that date?
-If as Bluebird/Jungyeon said, that Woo-jin is on Smart Earth…why is she so desperate to find him? I understand JH is looking for his brother, but what’s in it for our alien lad? I feel like there's a deeper motie she's not revealing
-Has Jungyeon regained all of her memories in 2037?
-Deputy Chief Lee is Woo-jin’s sunbae, but does he know the chairman’s identity? Does he know what Jungyeon is?
-What's Professor/Minister Park's deal?

I think Woo Jin did disappeared in 2017. It is just that they found a photo of Jin in 2022 at the chairman's office so they think that he might be the chairman.
I don't think Woo Jin would be the chairman. It might be a red herring. Having the same picture behind him in that photo doenst mean that he is the chairman right ? Also, the picture can be moved to the chairman office later on (2037) and not in 2022.

Thanks festerfaster!
I feel like I run the 100 metre dash each time I watch an episode. I get high- strung, breathless, ... with heart-racing. This show is still so good in eliciting in us viewers, a plethora of of conspiracy and other theories, and giving us a twist that shocks.
I had a theory that Byul was a robot, who was able to program herself to become more human. It's more likely that she's an alien, but who cares, it's fun to do guesswork.
I've been thinking that Kim Gyu Chul, the boys' father was in on it from the very beginning. He was there at the right place and time to intercept Byul's 'appearance'. He took her in either to safeguard her from experiments, from having her emotionless-ness harvested or to observe her. If he is a good guy, he may have agreed to disappear to keep his sons safe. It did not look like he had anticipated a permanent separation from them when he left with Byul. It might have been to keep him 'obedient' that Bum Gyun had been taken and a worm planted in him. I can't imagine that Kim Gyu Chul would have agreed to experimenting with his own son.
Later on, perhaps it was because Woo Jin wanted to connect with his father, that he agreed to meet Prof. Han and chose to disappear as well. He may have been tricked into continuing the work of his father and either formed or joined Human B.
This show is so good at pulling the rug out from under our feet. We are lured into making up endless theories, only to see how right or wrong we are. It's a fun game to play with an intelligent show.
So nerve-wracking, so unpredictable, ... so good!

I'm still suspicious about Joonhyuk being Bumgyun. In the last episode, when Woojin stopped Minyoung from stepping on the glass, she said that he's the same as his brother, which I take to mean that they're so similar that they could be mistaken as the same person if you ignore the physical differences. I don't know if it was just a throwaway line, but I don't think it is because it was such a specific thing to mention at that moment, they could have just not added it at all since it wasn't important to the actual scene. I was one of those who was convinced that Joonhyuk was Bumgyun, but that line is creating suspicion for me. And if you noticed, the show hasn't gone into how the chief and minyoung found joonhyuk ten years ago and removed his chip. The earliest scene we get is of him in the hospital after his chip removal. Did Jungyeon help thinking that he was Woojin? I don't think so or they would mentioned it already, even she was shocked that Joonhyuk turned out to be Bumgyun. But it's a pretty important thing they haven't gone into and it's creating alarm bells for me... We don't know how Joonhyuk lived in smart earth, and that's the thing, nobody know who he was before he got his chip removed! I'm starting to think that maybe he is Woojin... Either that or maybe Woojin helped the chief and minyoung find Joonhyuk after somehow recovering his memories since we know he did have the chip installed. But that doesn't make sense, who would have helped him remove his chip? Minster Park? Maybe that's still why he's acting so shady? But again, I don't think it makes a whole lot of sense considering that he was suggesting that Woojin could be the chairman. Almost everything can be explained if Joonhyuk turns out to be Woojin, and maybe the one who helped locate him was Bumgyun and then they can live happily ever after! My wishful thinking... But if I turn out to be correct I'm going to be so surprised. But so far all my theories have proven to be correct, maybe I'm just a really good guesser when it comes to this show XD

Yeah that line felt very suspicious to me as well. It made me wonder why the writerd would drop that line all of a sudden. But I still don't want Joonhyuk to be Woojin because many amazing scenes would just end up feeling very silly to me: that emotional end to Ep 4 where Joonhyuk was apologizing to Woojin which just becomes him apologizing to himself; All the times Joonhyuk is looking so hard for Woojin only to end up being Woojin himself... I think having another switch on which twin is which is just gonna take a lot of the impact away and would be overkill already imo.

Chief Hong and the rest (Joonhyuk + Minyoung) are aware which twin Joonhyuk is. And that is Joonhyuk = Bumgyun. It's just that they withheld the information from the audience to keep the suspense, but the characters themselves are very much aware of it.

This Show blows my mind every episode.
Thoughts and theories:
Is Woo Jin really the chairman? Isn't it a little TOO convenient that his picture is in the computer to be downloaded by Bluebird? Especially when he's been so careful not to let anyone know who he is. And if so, where is Prof Han in 2037?
Woo Jin and Bum gyun's dad (who I'm gonna call Dad from now on) is clearly the one who connected Byul with Prof Han. But is he really evil? I think he had good intentions for his research to help cure he psychiatric patients but then Prof Han took it one step too far when he wanted to test it on students or didn't want to stop even when it was too dangerous. And then he tried to stop Prof by wiping Byul's memories and giving her emotions, so Prof killed him.
I think Prof Han needs Woo Jin in 2017 so that he can jog Byul/Jung Yeon's memory. He can't not know their past connection or who Woo Jin's dad is.
I'm not sure if Prof Kang is truly good or not, my gut is leaning towards mercenary, but I do think that he isn't as evil as Prof Han for sure. You can't get more evil than drugging people and dropping bugs down their nose to control them. *shudder*
And lastly, who is the person in 2017 working with Prof on his research that he was talking on the phone? Clearly that person knows everything, but we have not met anyone new yet or anyone he could be in the 2037 timeline. Wonder if it's significant or not. Knowing this show, probably so. Everything is significant!
Cannot wait till Monday!

On one hand, I'm really thankful to Minister Park for coming to Joon-hyuk's saving in the nick of time.
On the other hand, my gut feelings are telling me that the whole "rescue" scene was staged. As though the evil trio -- Minister Park + Sunbae Lee + Chairman (I'm putting my money on Professor Han) -- were trying to use Minister Park as the front to gain the Normal Earth police force's trust.
I'm so relieved to know that Woo-jin survived the 2017 timeline, and we know now he was alive and well in year 2022. Where he is now, remains a mystery. But I'm pretty sure our A team will be able to locate him... in 3 more weeks, at the max.

Maybe Woo Jin is not the chairman after all. I still suspected more on Professor Han. He is anyway the person researching the care system in 2017. I think Woo Jin and Bum Gyun's might die in the car accident or may have been killed off by Professor Han cos he tried to stop their research. He did not abandoned his two boys actually. I can't help but wonder if Joon-hyuk might still be Woo-jin. Joon-hyuk/Bum-gyun still doesn't have his own memories, he is just going based on the memories that were left behind that he was told were from his twin. What if before he had his blue bug/chip removed he had his own memories recorded and left in case he forgot his memory, which is a possible side effect according to Min-young. Joon-hyuk has some similiarities with Woo-jin, like playing with the Rubik's cube when thinking and getting Dong-soo in line. Even Jung-yeon seemed surprised that he was Bum-gyun; so if she didn't expect him to be Bum-gyun doesn't that mean she expected him to be Woo-jin? All the places she sent him to were connected to both twins and her, so she could have thought he was Woo-jin and was trying to help him realize that she was Bluebird. Although the problems with this theory is 1) why didn't the chief just tell him these were his own memories instead of saying they were left by his twin, unless he and Min-young want him to remember on his own or they don't realize that he is Woo-jin, they may think he is Bum-gyun; 2) shouldn't Dong-soo, Minister Park and Deputy Chief Lee recognize him as Woo-jin, but perhaps not after twenty years.
I don't think this is where it is heading but that's the fun part about guessing, you can come up with all kinds of wild ideas while waiting for the truth to be revealed. And I love how Woo-jin's habit of playing with a Rubik's cube was passed on to others like Jung-yeon.
And why is everyone assuming that Woo-jin is the chairman? There is till Professor Han and Kim Gyu Chul who are unaccounted for. Just because that painting in the picture with Woo-jin was in the chairman's office doesn't mean anything. Maybe it as in an art gallery when the picture was taken and the chairman bought the painting later.
Now I'm just interested to know whose side is Minister Park on, how did everyone pass the last 20 years to get to this point, and Who and Where the heck is WOO-JIN? Plus it'll be interesting to see if they use Yeo Jin-goo or another actor for older Woo-jin, but really who can you find to match him? He is just that good.

Also, Joonhyuk was shown to have memories from both the brothers' POVs. His memories of Woojin's has been explained to be the one left behind by Woojin himself. But where else would he get Bumgyun's memories, aside from his own? Joonhyuk had flashbacks of Bumgyun being imprisoned in the hospital.
And I really agree. You just can't stop guessing when it comes to this show. This drama isn't perfect, but I really am enjoying making up theories and reading the others at the same time.
Yeah... just let YJG play Woojin in 2037. He's way too good in Part 1, it would be really a shame not to see more of him in Part 2.

So, I'm going to go out on a limb with a crazy theory here: I don't think Byul is an alien. The kids are super unreliable narrators and I think the whole alien angle is a red herring.
I think Byul was a test subject who escaped the Eunsang hospital where she was the only successful experiment for the Alpha Project of the Stable Care chip that everyone keeps getting implanted with in Beta Project and Smart Earth. What does the chip do? Well, considering she hasn't aged in 50 years, I'm going to go with experiments surrounding the quest for perpetual life.
You know, kinda like the crazy research the Uber Elite Techies are doing to extend their lives.

I anticipate the "theory" is yet another red herring. Really, though, this drama has everything but the kitchen sink in it to make it science fiction. I can't figure out the plot is actually clever or just full of enough twists and turns to fool us into thinking it is.
My bet is on the chairman being the missing dad. I am still undecided if Byul is an alien, a time-traveler (this seems less likely now) or simply a human with memory issues from BETA project who got loose at some point.
I am starting to wonder how Woo Jin can be so smart when he keeps doing dumb things. Surprisingly I have more empathy for Future Bum Gyun. Also I don't trust Minister Park. Clearly he wants the program to be a money maker, so I would not expect his motives to be pure.
Still kind of disappointed with this drama. I will continue to watch with the hope it genuinely surprises me by the end.

I feel so bad for Ho-Soo. He has some serious mental problems. No wonder he is so terrified to face his memories. I really like his character for this, because the suppressed memory technique really worked for him and ended his suffering. Who knows, he might have even hurt himself, if they hadn't been taken. He is just a wonderful example that the question: Is ignorance bliss and is it alright to forget bad things? doesn't have a yes or no/ black or white answer. I'm rooting for him.
