Happy Friday, Beanies!

I am wondering if anyone who understands Korean can help me with my problem. I've been surfing the net to search for music sheets of KDrama OSTs, and while some famous ones are easily accessible, most are kind of hard to find. Then I found this site which has a few good ones (although not up-to-date). The thing is, I need to log in before I can download the sheets (I think). I can read hangul, but I can not understand the words (hehe), so can anyone guide me on how to create an account on this site? I feel like I can manage myself after that.

Here's the link: http://musicsky.co.kr/

Oh and if you have some good music sheet sources too, may I ask for them? Thank you so much!

I'm sure you've seen funguypiano on YT. I love his arrangements. He was having problems finding music too, but you might be able to communicate with him and see what he has used. He started his page because he couldn't find good arrangements. He also has a Facebook page.

I hope that Beanies will share their kdrama sheet music resources bountifully! It would be a gold star day for me to find easy access to ost songs, too. I used to doggedly track them down using links found on soompi but that got away from me years ago, now I would hardly know where to start again(that soompi thread is crazy unwieldy). Best of luck on the hunt, Mango Juice!

Same, I'd love to know where people find music. I learned a few piano pieces from Goblin thanks to DooPiano (on youtube), but he/she took the sheetmusic down due to copyright issues. :'(

500 Open Threads! Congratulations Dramabeans ?
I'm feeling like a real growed-up kdrama fan as I'm currently watching 3 live dramas rather than binging on finished ones. My Secret Romance, Suspicious Partners and Man2Man. Woah - having to live with so much delayed gratification is exhausting!

Sounds like you've just started watching currently airing dramas as they come? They can be pretty rough to keep up with sometimes, but, I love that it gives me time to process things I may dislike and kind of get over it. Just hope that you don't get you favourite shows air on the same day.

Kekeke, I'm loving how deliciously ribald it is at times - like when our hero takes our heroine into the room of underwear and talks about having to reveal everything. And the mystery of the jewellery box - who knew padding in the storyline could be so hilarious ?. Oh and Secretary Jang's suits!

I am the same way. I try not to watch currently airing dramas because I am all about binge watching. But I am watching Chicago Typewriter, Mystery Queen and My Secret Romance. There really wasn't anything else out that was appealing to me which is why I started these. I don't know how people do it. I need to have my instant gratification! It also hurts more when dramas (like Chicago Typewriter) have pre-emptions.

Atleast I only started MSR a couple days ago and the drama ends soon.

Yup, partly cause nothing was appealing to me, and partly to see if it was a more sustainable way to watch dramas - rather than the 'just one more episode, whoops now it's 4.30am and hubby has just stormed off to the spare bed in disgust...?'

Yes! The drama addict in me is so happy to be back to having a full line-up to watch (MSR, SP, CT - 1 ep live a day except Sunday) after a rather slow spring season! So in fact the gratification is not so delayed as there is always another drama to tie you over while waiting for the next new ep. Enjoy!

OT week 15 (I think). I hope everyone is having a great Friday! I’m going on vacay! Will be in Italy for 2 weeks, so may not be around here much. But before I go, just a short summary of this past week.

I finished Oh Hae Young. It had a very satisfying ending. Thank you for the recommendations! And we started Liar and His Lover. I really identify with this one; it’s the first music-related kdrama I’ve seen, and I’m not into the kpop scene at all, but I do LOVE music, in almost any form. I was a music minor in college. Looking forward to seeing how this plays out. It reminds me of my college days, which really don’t seem that long ago. So what kdramas do you identify with the most? Is there one that reminded you of your own life and love, requited or not?

Short dialogue today:

Me (while packing): Should I wear make-up tomorrow? If not, I’ll pack everything in the suitcase tonight. If I don’t wear make-up, I’ll look like I’m sixteen and sick (I have dark circles have no lip pigment) which will make you look like you robbed the cradle, or are having an affair with the nanny, or kidnapped 3 kids, and one of them has cancer. If I do, then none of this stuff can be put away until the morning—and it’ll be a pain to pack it up last minute. Such is the plight of your wife.

Hubby (while getting ready for bed): I don’t think you realize how little I care what you do. Such is the plight of your husband.

(Later that night while watching Liar…)

Me (catching my husband up to the plot): So the bass player of Crude Play I don’t think wants to be a bass player with the band anymore, and is trying to produce So Rim’s band.

Hubby (in total deadpan): No bass player ever wants to stay a bass player in any band. Such is the plight of bass players.

Me: ????????

Moral of the story: Bass players really do have the short end of the stick.

Second moral: I split the difference and I'm going all Korean and just wearing blush, mascara and lipstick today.

Third moral: VACAY, here we come!

Oh Italy that's cool :o Have a nice trip !

I identify with Reply 1997 because of the heroine who is a fangirl. She reminds me of my earlier years of being a Kpop fan but less wild. Weightlifting Kim Bok Ju and Age of Youth are about college and friends just coming-of-age dramas and it speaks so much to me being currently a student.

Always, Kim Sam Soon as a character. Not that beautiful , insecure in love, talented at work, outspoken and with an outsize sense of justice for others. The Korean Lizzy Bennet only enhanced for kdrama. I love her and she's my girl.

Have an awesome trip!

It's Kim Mi Young in Fated to Love You for me. Not the plot, thank goodness, but I really identified with the character. The way she is a people pleaser. The way her friend has to coach her on how to say No. And when she turned and looked into the camera and explained that she is a post-it note, someone everyone needs but no one values, who can be used and disposed of without leaving a mark -- well, let's just say I still use a screenshot of that moment as my avatar on another forum. And despite all of that, she had a quiet inner strength and resiliency that I aspire to.

I know a lot of women don't like doormat characters. Find them boring and anti-feminist. And I get that. But I'm glad there are still a few of them out there to be role models for women like me.

Amilia I hope that kdramas will continue to present a variety of female characters, and not listen to a loud (probable) minority who want all female characters to be the same. Sometimes I am in the mood to watch a sassy female lead, and sometimes I am in the mood to watch a very sweet female lead who has quiet strength. So I hope that kdramas will continue to offer variety.

As for "fated to love you" I like the TW-drama and wish they would remake it, but I couldn't get into the k-drama because of the male lead (I couldn't stand that they made him certifiable with a stupid/annoying laugh). But I like the female lead, and I agree her description about herself feels real, even if I haven't had her experiences (and that is the sign of good writing, when the character feels real in their struggles - even if the viewer hasn't had those same struggles. So the viewer cares and roots for the male or female lead).

Hi Beanies !

I never knew planning a trip was that hard ! Luckily dramas are here to put me in a good mood.

I watched KBS Drama Special Explicit Innocence a few months ago and forgot to talk about it. The story is about a gyu wanting to do it for the first time with his girlfriend. There's nothing shocking or R-rated (you know it's KBS) but some parts made me anxious lol. Beside that, it showed the main character's choice of carrier and growth. It was good and quite funny !

Futureless things : @kaybee recommended it last month in OT. It is a really good movie and I love how it depicted various ordinary people with concerns : the discrimination of North Korean workers, LGBT couples, young adults struggling with jobs and/or studies and more.

Ode to Joy Season 2 : The opening is cute even if this season will be heavier I think. I like Andy's current love interest because he can help her open herself and discover the joy to live without restriction. And it doesn't seem like he will make her uncomfortable unlike the previous one. It was nice to see the rest of the girls spending the New Year with their family and friends. I'm still waiting for episode 2 to be subbed !

Individualist Ji-young : It felt like watching a film. I love the leads relationship and how each other presence infected their life. I want more of this kind of drama.

Father is Strange : I normally watch it on KBSWorld but I'm so addicted that I watched this week's episode ! What a way to embarrass your sister-in-law ha ! Mi Young and Actor Ahn are too cute :3 When he and the sisters were together they looked like real siblings. The elder brother is growing more concerned about his status as the eldest. I share the same mind set as Hye Young when she said “Mom and I have different values. Nobody is right or wrong.” However I think it was bad that she played with words about living with a “boy” friend.

Happy Friday :D

I am waiting for Ode to Joy to finish and marathon it!

I am glad you are addicted to FIS because it is same for me. After CT, FIS is the next drama that I cannot wait to see the next epi. Last week, just for a moment I shipped Jong Hee- Hye Yeong and thought, how awesome if we can get OTP which is so eccentric like this lol. ?? If Lee Yu Ri and Seo Jun Young can be sunbae-hoobae in Super Daddy Yeol, and then be a couple in their next drama Heaven Promise, I think we can get Lee Joon - Lee Yuri couple in the next next drama! Lee Joon even posted selca with Lee Yuri in his IG ? I feel bad to momentarily shipping them? Sorry Mi Young ah!

LOL I laughed so hard when she said she want to call police to report domestic violence (because her mom keep hitting her) ? She is a lawyer and she is good in twisting her words.

The Byun sisters' entrance for their oppa's wedding - so savage ?

The sisters made my week. Yu Ju is going to suffer 3 times more than Mi Young and she deserves it !

I cannot feel bad so much for Yoo Joo because she is not showing her sign of remorse, maybe a little. She was messing with the sisters. I understood that she didnt want to be overshadowed by the sisters - but by only giving shoes to one sister and ignore the rest, lol she asked for it? Wait until Ra Young learns about the bully, it will be in no time their parents know about it too.

Hae Young's parents gave up to be mad with her - she cannot be defeated ? and when her parents seems to try to acccept her logics, haha i love them. But I feel her, she tried as much as possible not to let anyone else know about her meeting with Jong Hwan's mother eight years ago. I saw the preview and I cannot wait for next epi!

I cannot wait to see next epi for Chicago Typewriter! Hopefully there will be kisssss???

Still not really sure about Ruler and Suspicious Partner - i cannot say I m really loving them or not. But for now will continue to watch it. I love that Eun Bong Hee is quite shameless and sassy - in a good way and I want her to continue to be that way. But the legal element in this drama is quite disappointing for me, not that I dislike legal drama. How I wished this drama is about other job. In that sense, I am counting days for Ssam My Way to begin! Please be good drama. Ruler is so heart breaking , but I cannot fully ignore the weak acting by second leads. I will give few more weeks to see if I want to continue watching or not. With Ssam My Way, Circle and Lookout start next week, we will be given more options.

It is hard to say, but goodbye Rebel! ? I will be missing you a lot, Hong family! Although there will be several upcoming sageuk this year, I dont think they can beat Rebel in my heart. Not a flawless drama, but it left you with very good memories and feeling - from the storyline, amazing casts (not a single mediocre acting from these casts, from the good ones to baddies, even the minor casts did a very good job), its OSTs and everything. I am looking forward to see this writer and PDnim next sageuk and please continue to cast good actors - the underrated and talented ones.

This drama is just a little upgrade version of SWDBS with more mature couple lol. While I failed to stay until the end for SWDBS, but for this drama maybe I will stay until the end. I want more moments between these three Bong Hee -Ji Wook -Eun Hyuk, and for second female lead, if she is just to be a bothersome ex gf, they better reduce her screentime.

2

I'm watching for romcom too!! And the suspense too, because it makes the OTP getting closer.

1

@Sera
Oh no I'm afraid I've got to disagree with you there. Imho it's unfair to compare SP to SWDBS. Even if SP is not well-written it's still in another league. As far as writing is concerned, SWDBS is a mess that I want to forget about along with other messes I watched last year and earlier this year too. Acting is an entirely different matter, though, and I've got nothing to complain about the actors and actresses even though I personally feel like SWDBS is a waste to PBY's talent and a bad professional choice on her part. SP still has its blatant plot holes but so far it's not as juvenile and pointless as SWDBS appears to me.

7

@HyeMi It's OK ? The reason why I comparing these two because both give quite similar feeling for me - romcom with crime /legal elements. And I am so agree that PBY was wasted in SWDBS.

2

@Sera
I agree they're similar as far as the genre is concerned, but to me SP is more than a little upgrade from SWDBS :P.
I'm hoping the second female lead in SP would have a lot more to offer than the usual stereotypical petty and jealous girlfriend.

Happy 500 OT! Turns out that this is also my 500th post. Is this kismet or serious planning? ?

So I've been watching asian dramas, web series, shorts, and animation for a while now and I've kind of forgotten what exactly it that keeps me loving and watching them. They definitely portrayed social issues in different ways, a result of differences in social norms etc I presume. Probably it was how male lead characters "love" their female counterparts.

My first kdrama was Coffee Prince. It felt like such a breath of fresh air at the time and addressed subject matter like sex and sexuality in interesting ways I hadn't seen before. My first kmovie was The Man From Nowhere. This one was more simple. I loved it because the action was pretty dang good and Won Bin is plain awesome. However I really couldn't say what keeps me watching especially when I compare asian dramas to their western counterparts.

So my question to you guys is this. What sucked you into the asian drama world, and what keeps you watching till this day?

Getting used to listening to the language really does help in watching shows, especially if I generally don't get what is being said. I light up when those one or two words pop up that I can identify--funny enough I get annoyed when subs mess around with little things like peoples names. I think the same goes for getting used to the culture in term of social norms etc. It makes it easier to understand why people do what they do.

Forgot to say, I'm beginning to appreciate the one season run a lot more now. I used to so desperately want to see what happens next in the characters lives because western TV shows typically give us that format, but I tend to look at dramas as more like very long movies now. If they are done right, they can be a fulfilling and enjoyable experience. Hmmm...guess that's one reason why I'm still watching them.

For me, it was a thread on amazon romance forum about kdramas, and the poster was asking about kdramas. I read the thread, and then got curious. So I checked out kdramas, and started with "You're Beautiful" and the rest is history. I have been watching kdramas for almost 5/6 years now, and barely watch any Western television anymore.

I think the reason why kdramas satisfy me (despite their flaws), is because they are in the genre I like which is romance. I find the characters a lot more realistic in their actions and reactions (especially female characters). I like that romance is always either the genre of the drama or one of the major genres of the drama (in general). I also like that kdramas don't drag on for years, and present a complete story in 16 to 24 episodes, so the viewer doesn't get bored, or stuck for years to get a full story. I also like that this format allows for many dramas to get done with different premises, and allows for creative ideas to be explored as plots.

Basically kdramas are great entertainment, and stress relievers, and that is something that is unfortunately lacking in Western shows for me.

5
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

That's why I have stuck with kdramas for years as well. They are primetime television with women unabashedly as their target audience. In the US, television targeted to women is decidedly second tier. Daytime soaps or Lifetime Originals. Primetime tv is targeted towards men. Which doesn't mean women can't enjoy it as well, of course, but even the shows I like don't speak to me like dramas do. And yes, a lot of that is due to the way they focus on things I care about -- romance and interpersonal relationships of all kinds.

The TV was on, it was showing a Hong Kong drama, and I just sat down and started watching. I was probably like four. Been watching dramas ever since. HK dramas are like my comfort food, though I have also branched into Japanese and Korean dramas. These days, J-dramas are more my speed - shorter episode count and generally tighter storytelling.

My first k-drama that I finished was probably Dae Jang-geum. It was a solid drama, but a bit tedious at 54 episodes.

Your gateway experience sounds like my anime experience. I was a tad bit older and it's not so much my comfort food anymore. I guess that's because I'm less into superficial action stuff and more into slice of life stuff. Oddly enough though, this season has a pretty good action anime with some substance, so I have one foot back in I guess.

An acquaintance of mine also loves J-dramas for similar reasons to yours. I'm trying to get her back to the dark side (k-dramas). I like dramas because they are arguably less conservative than K-dramas. By that I mean they address topics of sex and sexuality in a way that less frustrating than K-dramas. Have you seen Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories by the way. It just popped in my head for some reason. Maybe I'm hungry. Or maybe it's one of the few J-dramas I've seen and liked. It's available on Netflix.

Heh, anime was never my thing. The only anime I finished and still remember fondly was Ranma ½ - I think I watched everything about it, even the OVAs. I loathed the live-action and never went near it though.

J-dramas do explore more themes and are not as conservative. They do slice of life really well. And when they're dark, they are really dark (and we haven't even gotten to J-cinema), so I do like the no-holes barred approach in some of the heavier dramas. WOWOW tends to have excellent stuff.

I haven't seen the Tokyo Stories one since I don't have Netflix. But I've seen every other season of Shinya Shokudo, and I highly recommend that series if you haven't seen it.

Yes, there's a k-remake, but it felt very staged, and very off.

Dramanice has all three seasons of Shinya Shokudo. Do check it out: https://dramanice.es//search.html?keyword=shinya%20shokudo

For another slice of life J-drama, try Okashi no Ie. It's available on kissasian.

I watched the original and liked it, so I had a bias going in. But the remake is quite different from the source material, so much so that I prefer to think of it as an adaptation. That aside, the show did have to much side stories or an real development between the second leads. It was just our OTP for most of the show. The main couple featured solid actors in their 30s who had an amazing chemistry. This was buttressed by a good script which didn't skimp on the kisses--which weren't just pecks on the lips. The character development was also pretty solid and it never really fell into the pitfalls many other kdramas tend to find themselves. In sum, good actors, amazing chemistry, and a believable romance that one small piece of makjang aside.

I think 1% of Something was cute but it wasn't anything special. It's an enjoyable light and fluffy rom-com so if that's what you want it's a perfect drama. There wasn't too much plot but that actually worked in its benefit. It focused primarily on the cute couple without too much filler cluttering things.

Reading your summary makes me think that maybe I wasn't into the couple and the comedy part (yet) so I felt the nothing-new-in-there was a major alert of me getting bored later on, hence I stopped watching. I am all with cute leads but maybe this didn't work well for me back then. Anyway, thanks for the reply TrinPie!

What is your preference? If you want to watch classic ones

Romcom: My Girl Full House, Sassy Girl Chun Hyang. There are some others too but My Lovely SamSoon and My Girls are always my fav.

Classic melodrama - Winter Sonata, Autumn in My Heart, Stairway to Heaven, Thank You, I'm Sorry I love You.

There are so many to watch from the recent ones. But my recommendation will be It's OK It's Love, Chief Kim, Age of Youth, etc etc etc. (too many) ?

For more serious stuff, try: Story of a Man, Beautiful Mind, Heartless City (first 8-10 episodes) and Chuno.

So, I've been catching up with a few dramas.

Tunnel
Well, I don't like crime/mystery dramas but even I can see the appeal! It's a great show, with the feels and humor...and creeps lol!

My Secret Romance
It's cliché and all but I think that for their first romance OCN isn't doing so bad. And they have the flashback concept down to a T. I mean, come on, flashbacks of what happened 3 minutes ago? And in almost every episode? Do I look like Dory?

I'm thinking of binge watching Rebel this weekend. It was so dark in the beginning that I thought, "it's gonna get worse, obviously, and if you look how it's starting, this won't have a happy ending". And so I stopped watching it after 3 episodes. Regretting it now and gonna change that!

Stalker Oppa strikes again and that deer eye girl from Strange Family (that brutal form of acting) is at the receiving end. In low budget daily drama she looked pretty plain but here in a PTD with the help of some good makeup and good clothes she changed not her persona but acting style too.
Suspicious Partner plus is its dialogues and characters rest of it is big mess.

Want to start Thief-nom, Thief-nim.
Who is watching Time, Loveless?

Note - Various dramas subbed trailers are available on their respective Youtube Channels e.g: Viki, Dramafever, Kbs world Tv.

2nd Note - Same request posting 5th time
Rich Hero Poor Heroine - Contract marriage and lot of melodrama. Help me find this one. Curiosity is the driving force here and once its gone it won't have any meaning at all.

Regarding your 2nd note request, I'm assuming you're asking for the name of the drama. The first one that comes to mind is Marriage Contract with Lee Seo-jin and UEE. This was a drama from last year so it's fairly recent. ....... The second one that comes to mind is an older drama called White Lies. Although it's not strictly a "contract" situation, it was an agreement/arrangement sort of thing where the lead actress agreed to marry the younger brother (who had some sort of disability or ailment, I don't recall) of her ex-boyfriend, whom she had had a child with. It's makjang central, this one and long. But I don't know if this is the one you may be trying to remember.

The scenes i saw were in an FMV - problem is i wasn't logged in youtube and browsing content in private mode so i have no way to find that video.

It has your typical rich, cold and aloof male hero and mature female lead. Contract marriage was brought on by Mother. There is a car accident too.

Happy 500 open threads DB❣

I'm currently watching I remember you and I'm almost finished- it was on my list for a while, after hearing good things about it but only just got round to it and it's SO GOOD?

I was looking through my music playlist earlier and almost everything is korean. I listen to a mixture of Korean music but it's mainly ballads and OSTs. I just find that they're so easy to listen to and there's always that one song that clicks and you want to listen to it on repeat. At the moment my song on repeat is Sandeul's one more step in introverted boss. I don't want to overplay it though bc I know I end up not liking it as much ?

What are your fave songs (korean & non Korean)?

K-pop: I'm into CNBLUE and DBSK (5 members). I cant choose what song, because all of them is great.

Non K-pop, legendary songs like Bogoshipda (Kim Bum Soo), Goose's Dream (Insooni), Emergency Room (Izi). Oh, and all of Yiruma's piano.

J-music: One Ok Rock, Naruto OST, old anime OST.

I'm Indonesian so I mostly listen to Indo song and I subjectively think that it's just as good as Korean song (non K-pop).

Old western is great, since they didn't use synthesizer or autotune. I hate synthesizer and autotune.

On YT, I subscribe Sungha Jung (guitarist) and JunCurryAhn (violist).

For classic, I really love Beethoven's Pathetique Sonata, Tchaikovsky's Overture 1812, and Vivaldi's Four Season.

In short, I listen to many things even though I'm tone deaf lol.

Hi mahoilam - since my bias is a Korean singer called Hwang Chi Yeul, I pretty much just listen to only his songs - mainly covers of songs he sang on shows like "Immortal Songs 2" and "I Am A Singer China", but he does have some OSTs and songs, eg his OST "Because I Miss You - Yeong version" for "Moonlight Drawn By Clouds". His voice is the male voice in this duet on "King of Masked Singer" - the beautiful female voice belongs to Jung Hye Sung (she played the adorable sister of Park Bo Gum's character in MDBC) . The song is called "Miracle" - original by Kim Dong Ryul. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ee6PNdvGcJU

Final exams next week and I honestly feel like I would be taking up summer classes, lol.

As I've been busy for the whole month, I'm only watching two: My Secret Romance and Tunnel. I'm also planning to watch Suspicious Partner when it passes on the 10th episode mark.

My Secret Romance: Oh, definitely old school vibe. I'm enjoying it though I feel like we're going totally 2000's K-drama border next week. Bring it on, Chairman Daddy.

Tunnel: Can't believe it'll end this weekend! It has been a fun ride, especially since I'm loving all the leads. Not really feeling the vibe of the antagonist but then again, my standards have gotten higher thanks to Kim Jaewook in Voice (oops).

Not sure if I'll pick Ruler up but I'm pretty sure with Seven Day Queen since I'm a trash for YWJ, lol. I'm so ready for the heartache a la Bubu Jing Xin.

I also watched REBEL and loved it to bits. I held off on starting RULER, MASTER OF THE MASK until this past week so I wouldn't be too distracted during the finale. I'm up to date with it now, and enjoying it a lot.

For the same reason as you, I'm gearing up for SEVEN DAY QUEEN. Having watched SAIMDANG, LIGHT'S DIARY, I'm expecting an angstfest with King Jungjong.

I'm also looking forward to MY SASSY GIRL in Joseon (Joo Won in a sageuk at last), and LIVE UP TO YOUR NAME (yay, Kim Nam-gil!). It'll be interesting to see how comedy and acupuncture mix.

As for upcoming shows with modern settings, LOOKOUT (for Shin Dong-wook) and CRIMINAL MINDS (for Lee Joon-gi) have my undivided attention. Ditto for DUAL (and Yang Se-jong, now that he's out of the OR at Doldam Hospital).

So many Kdramas, so little time. ;-)

Watched this week:

Whisper - Up to episode 8 and rebellious Soo-yeon continues to miscalculate. ..... And this Chairman Kang character --- what an awful person.

Mystery Queen - Seol-ok's husband. Why am I not surprised? ..... I still have to watch episode 14 though.

Strong Woman Do Bong-soon - Finally saw the last episode! ..... Will certainly miss Bong-bong and Min-min. ..... As a final note, I was constantly asking myself what they used on Park Hyung-sik's hair. It had texture and hold that just looked great. Whatever it was, I want that product!

Re: Seol Ok's husband

I have a feeling that he isn't really cheating, because he looks mostly annoyed at that scene in the boutique with the mystery-gf. Or maybe he's just the type of guy that doesn't really care about love, because it seems that he's not in love with his wife either. When he asked SO if she spent the day with Det Ha, he doesn't seem too jealous for me but more angry about their involvement in the taxi driver case.

I shed a tear with SO at that elevator scene and I am so glad that Wan Seung is there to save the day! I do wish he would learn a thing or two from his captain about wooing a lady though, LOL.

Whether SO's husband is cheating or not, he shouldn't have brought another woman to the function. It makes it seem like that woman is his other half. I don't like it. Why can't he bring his wife to the function? Is he ashamed of her? He feels embarrassed to be bringing her to such events?

Wouldn't be surprised if it's for a promotion or sucking up to higher up. But regardless, it's weird that he “hides“ the fact that he was a wife especially since they have been married for long. This marriage is already rocky as it is and I have a feeling the drama will end with divorce so WS and SO can start anew. With WS arrested as well, we probably won't see any lovey dovey moment and their bonding moment in the bar in this episode is the only thing that we will get in this series. What a waste of sizzling chemistry - but then I know this isn't a romcom so can't complain.

This week I started 3 new dramas, while still live watching Mystery Queen (my crack! but it's ending! sadface!):

-Whisper : Couldn't continue to episode 2, this is a bit too makjang for my taste, especially the last scene in episode 1 where the PD inserted thunder to make the scene more dramatic. So cheesy! It's good to have Lee Bo Young back though, she's so pretty and such a natural on screen.

- My Secret Romance : I have to admit I have prejudice against idol-actors and I refused to watch it for that reason (same goes for Liar & Lover), but then one day, I had a dream about this drama and I just feel the need to watch Sung Hoon badly the next day. Weird huh? Long story short, this drama isn't bad to pass time, the chemistry of the leads is no 1% of Anything, or maybe because the female lead's character is OTT ditzy that I just can't get into liking her that much. Performance-wise though, the actress is not bad, in fact Sung Hoon made me cringe more sometimes with his over-acting. This drama offers nothing new with the plot and lazily-written characters (and I don't get how the lazy chaebol suddenly becomes a workaholic) but I guess this drama is like chicklit / harlequin novels, it's not deep and you may eye-rolled a lot, but it's a nice guilty pleasure.

- Suspicious Partner : I had no idea what the story is (other than there's supposed to be an amnesiac killer on the loose? LOL) and I am starting this for the leads alone. And they don't disappoint! I'm glad I don't find traces of Ji Chang Wook's characters from Healer here (maybe just a bit of Bongsookie) as this always makes me appreciate the actor more. (Plus he's in suit, all the time! Without Yoona!)
Nam Ji Hyun is also a delight to watch, she makes the sassy character lovable instead of irritating and I am so glad she's the one who got the job at the end. You can def feel the chemistry between them two and I can't wait for next episodes to see what's the storyline gonna be. The first 2 episodes (hours) have weird pacing, like the story for their first meet takes up 1 episode, but then the next episode fast-forward the whole trial. In saying that though, I won't complain because I realised this is only a set up for the rest of the series, and tbh, I don't enjoy seeing her being prosecuted and in jail too. I just remembered that this is the writer from IRY (favorite drama!) and that too takes few episodes to set in, so again, I am excited for the next weeks and I hope this drama will be my new crack.

Oh also, I watched 1/3 of Fabricated City before SP and I thought it's going to be a comedy action, boy how wrong was I. I quit after seeing Ji Chang Wook's character getting beaten for the nth time in prison. It's a bit confusing at first to see him right after in the drama, but he's not the one who's falsely accused and had to stay behind bars. Like I got scared for Nam Ji Hyun's character that she will get beaten in prison too, before I remembered...

It was a bit slowpaced in the beginning, but I am glad that by ep 6, it started to really capture my attention. <3 I am getting more and more curious about the 1930s (Baek Tae Min's association w/ them in the past, how the characters' relationships will further develop in the past and present, etc).

I have a work course in the morning, korean lesson in the afternoon and then the fan meet at night! It's gonna be one heck of a Saturday... in the best way possible! ?

I'm only watching Chicago Typewriter right now but it has been all kinds of awesome so I'm really a very happy camper.

Deciding if I should start Let's Eat or Tree with Deep Roots till 7 Day Queen is out.

A lot has been said about TVN's slump plus washed out colour palette but honestly I love the visuals in all the TVN dramas I've seen- Goblin, Reply 1988, Liar, and Chicago Typewriter (off the top of my head). I guess I prefer my dramas a little bit more introspective and mellow? Because I'm selfish and I hope they will never change. The bright loud colours in the My Sassy Girl promos are really not my thing. But different strokes for different folks.

Have an awesome weekend everyone!!! *blows kisses* (sorry I'm a bit high at the moment. Can you tell from all my exclamation !!! marks?? Hehe.?)

Right, it's Six Flying Dragon. SFD and Tree are connected by the same writers.
Tree is actually based on a novel so take it as fiction. It's true that King Sejong created Hangul but that's not how it actually happen in history.
The more historical version is "The Great king Sejong."

I'd visit King Sejong's statue at Gwanghawmun Square. He is one of the most beloved and decorated king in the history of Korea.

✨??????✨ Party time!!

1) The comments on Liar and His Lover's last episode has surpassed Goblin's. Did we ever have recap with 1.3k comments?
2) My favorite shoujo mangas are getting adapted. Recently they announce about Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun. Yaaaayy!!
3) In general, a lot of manga is getting adapted in 2017. I have trouble to make the order of online watch list. As well as cinema watch list. I'm going to be broke.
4) I'm currently crazy for Suspicious Partner.
5) Princess Hours Thai is a pleasure to my eyes. The sceneries and setting are very beautiful.

Anyone watching Thief-nom, Thief-nim? I checked out the first two episodes out of curiosity, but instead of crying as the story clearly intended me to, I was laughing at all the misunderstandings and dramatic antics. I've never watched a weekend drama, so I'm wondering if there is a difference with weekday dramas? Are they more like telenovelas/soap operas? Just asking because I don't know if I want to commit to 50 episodes of this!

I haven't watched Thief yet, but weekend drama for each station are quite different in their theme.

KBS often provide family drama.

MBC - makjang and soap opera for most with so many nonsense (but addicting). Currently they have two weekend drama. One is Thief which I expect will be makjang all the way based on writer's past works the other one You're Too Much is more on melodrama /character driven drama.

SBS - depends, sometimes it is just a family drama. Currently Unni Is Alive which is makjang drama.

That's helpful, thank you. I may try two more episodes, but if it continues in makjang vein (and the adult actors don't show up soon) I'll put it on hold.

This is my first Open Thread post, and I wanted to ask something that has been bothering me since I entered kdramaworld with Coffee Prince years ago. It's about the relationship South Koreans have with their pet dogs. Aside from Coffee Prince, where Mr. Crush aka Han-sung took his dog out for regular walks and let him run around in the garden, I've noticed that kdramas have a habit of normalising pet dogs being kept tied outside, all day long (You're Beautiful). They're occasionally bid hello (Weightlifting Fairy) and fed by the family members (Strong Woman Go Bong-soon), and very infrequently walked by them (Kill Me Heal Me), but they're pretty much never allowed inside the house and not really shown to be given much exercise or affection.
So, what I want to know is: Is this really how dogs are treated in Korea? Like novelty possessions instead of living beings? Is this more normal in cities than the countryside? OR is this another instance of Korean media idealizing what they think should be the norm?
What I mean by the latter is that kdramas are often, very skilfully, used to inculcate good citizen habits: like, crossing the street when the light changes, always putting on the seat belt, never littering, etc. I totally approve of this way of helping audiences internalize a lesson, but would they also use it to create a world where dogs are kept tied all day and never allowed inside the house?
I find it hard to believe that all Korean families would treat their dogs this way, mostly because dog lovers are alike everywhere: we tend to go into pet parenthood with firm lines in our minds and soon find ourselves ousted from our own beds and sofas by the furballs. =)

Required fields are marked *

I think it could be related to the function dogs have in Korea, people's economic situation, and practical concerns such as space (city vs country). For instance, I lived in a 'third-world country' (a term I dislike but I'll use it so you know I don't mean USA or Europe) where dogs are not only pets but guard dogs whose job is to bark and scare away potential trespasses. Dogs can come into the house, but they are mostly outside because otherwise they'd make the whole house dirty. We have walls and fences enclosing houses and gardens, so dogs are free to run around and make noise outside the house, especially when owners are not home (again, security reasons - plus, so they can do number one and number two). We don't take them for walks regularly because they get their exercise in the garden. So, pet parenthood is not a concept most people live with in my country. We love our dogs, but our definition of pet does not mean treating them like part of the family. It varies obviously from family to family, but for the most part it is as I have described it. I hope that makes sense!

But yes, I'm intrigued why Koreans keep them tied up - I wonder if Truck of Doom has anything to do with it? You don't want your dog running into such dangerous traffic!

In Superman Returns, Uhm Tae Woong's dogs have houses outside but they're allowed inside. In Roommate, Park Bom's dog was also kept inside.
not really sure about the general Koreans though

Hmm, I’ve seen some dramas where the characters do a good job of taking care of their pets (Example: Lee Soo Kyung and her dog, Barassi in Let’s Eat). She had a small dog in her apartment, not outside. In Strong Woman Go Bong Soon, I think the dog was tied outside the restaurant.

There are probably differences between the country/city settings like I imagine dogs are tied outside a country home to keep watch and the living space is more tight.

I’m trying to think of more examples, but my memory is kinda bad and I haven’t seen many dramas that has a focus on pets or includes them that often. The female lead in Chicago Typewriter works at a veterinary clinic and she is very caring towards animals.

Good morning! Hope everyone is having a wonderful day.

Been surprisingly watching a lot of kdramas at the same time (I usually only watch 1 with my family and 1 on my own).

Chicago Typewriter : I've been really liking this drama from the very beginning. It was one me and my Mom started because we weren't sure what to watch and I fell in love with it. I have watched up to episode 9 and omg, that kiss. I seriously rewatched that scene about 5 times. Lots of people prefer the 30s timeline but I am personally liking both timelines and how they tie-in with each other, and all the characters throughout. Yoo Ah-In is SO hot in the 30s timeline though (his hair in the modern timeline is horrible).

Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo : I was home sick on Monday and ended up binge watched the first 6 episodes. It's such a cute drama and both main characters are adorable in it. I stayed up way too late the other night watching it. Such a cute drama that I don't want to end.

Mystery Queen : Another drama I'm really enjoying. I love the cop buddy dynamic between Seol Ok and Wan Seung. Wasn't as thrilled with episode 12. The Sherlock team wanted to show they were as capable as Inspector Yoo but a lot of their progress was based off of information Inspector Yoo discovered. They were riding his coat tails and then rushing in to save the day at the last moment saying 'SEE SEE we can do it also!' But otherwise I've been enjoying all the episodes and the dynamic between the two main characters is great.

My Secret Romance : Been watching this one while I work. It's nothing special and follows a formulaic plot but it's a light and fluffy watch and I'm enjoying it for that. Also helps that Sung Hoon is incredibly hot.

There are tons of dramas coming out I am excited for. I like to let dramas finish airing or be close to finished before I start them so I am holding out on watching: Man to Man, Suspicious Partner, Lookout, Duel, Ruler: Master of the Mask, and Third Rate My Way. So many dramas!

Okay, does anybody else here watch The Americans? Because I was not really expecting to sit down to my Cold War spy drama this week and emerge ready to break out my Sandglass OST and drown in my feelings. There's a part in the episode where they play Zhuravli, an old Russian song about WWII, which is Sandglass's theme song!

Usually my American TV/drama interests are so separate, so it was a really strange intersection for me haha.

Just watching a few things here and there. The person I was watching Whisper with is having a bad bout of anxiety, so I had to put that one on hold a couple weeks, but I am eager to return. In the meantime, plowing through Age of Warriors (I am almost to triple digits!!). It is a damn good sageuk. Also watching Queen Insoo. I'd been dithering for a long time over whether I should pick up where I left off a year ago or restart it, and I finally decided on the latter. It is a bit frustrating to go back to Ham Eun-jung when you've had a taste of Chae Si-ra, but her performance is still pretty good, and the drama is just so delicious. It combines the epic historical feuds and radical social critique of Cruel Palace with the sentiment and tragedy of Shin Don.

Such a great drama :D

I hope you like this season when you can finally watch it! I think it's ending in a week or two.

I agree completely. I love how it's not cheesy or flashy like most spy stuff--everything is so low tech and messy, plus so much of the drama is internal, and for every situation or storyline there are at least 2 sides being examined. I also love Cold War stuff, so on top of being really really good, it's like crack to me haha.

1

yes it is crack, one of my friends finally started wtaching it (i have only been nagging her to watch for like 3 years), and she is already like, i just want to binge it, and i totally understand,
yes, it's ending soon, will be planning a binge weekend i guess soon :D

1

I'm glad you finished them all! I'm really glad that Kim Kap‑soo is still around from the golden era.
I haven't seen any sageuks that got me hooked since "Jeong Do-jeon" and I'm not holding my breath that KBS will do another epic conventional sageuk in the near future.

I've been watching the 1995 "Jang Nok-soo" without subs. I had no idea that Park Ji-young can be compelling in this role. Perfect pairing with Yoo Dong-geun's Yeonsan. I'd love to see them together in another sageuk or realistically in a weekend family drama because this genre is basically dead.
I've also been watching a bunch of very very old North Korean sageuks from before I was borned lol. (Chunhyangga, Rim Kkok Jong, Hong Kil Jong, The Flower Girl and some that doesn't even have titles but I do recognized some historical figures.

I think I'm done with American tv unless there is a join production with BBC.

Glad you are still around <3.

I totally get where you're coming from. I'm not sure why I'm all about American TV atm...maybe it's just been so long it feels fresh and different. Right now I'm enjoying Fargo, The Americans, and Deadwood, and I just gobbled up season 1 of Stranger Things. I always tune in for Drag Race, though this season is complete crap :(

Kiara, you're like the sageuk queen! Jang Nok-soo is a super interesting figure, and Yoo Dong-geun is one of my favorites (to say the least haha). Can you kind of understand the dialogue? There are phrases I've absorbed after watching so many of these things, but I'd be really scared to go without subs haha. I'm really anal about getting every last bit of dialogue.

Glad you are too <3 We'll have to talk about Whisper when I can finally finish it!

I am not watching The Americans, but I know just what you mean. Tiffany Hsu guest starred in the season 3 opener for Fresh Off the Boat. I felt so clever and in the know! Also like worlds were colliding. And then, when I checked imdb to make sure this was who I thought it was, I didn't recognize the name. I clicked through anyway, and it was her after all. Oddly enough, this actress goes by Tiffany Hsu in her t-dramas, and as Hsu Wei-ning in the American sitcom.

Hi everyone, feels like a long time since I've commented in here. I was taking a pretty long break from k-dramas. The slump was real guys! So almost 2 months later, I'm back in it again!

I picked up:
- Tunnel: I'm super loving this! I'm not usually into thrillers (I actually DID NOT like Signal, so imagine my shock at enjoying this one). But this is just really keeping me hooked!
- Suspicious Partner: I'm really liking JCW's role in this, he's so cute and odd.

In other worlds, I've got a question for those of you with a significant other who knows about your kdrama addiction. I'm getting back into the dating world and I know that a lot of people may not know about asian dramas and may find it different. I'm wondering how your significant other about your viewing preferences. Was it awkward? Was he/she interested or weirded out?

But I rather talk to wall than with him because he never really interested.

I actually never mention anything unless they mention something first. I remember I dated someone early this year and we were listening to his playlist (of just music, no lyrics) and I was thinking real hard where I heard the sound. Then it turned out that it was Weightlifting's Instrumental OST (which he watched with his ex and his ex downloaded on his Spotify). He liked the drama but I tried really hard not to appear over-excited with the fact that he watches drama and I also kept myself from recommending too many dramas and seeming overly zealous. ^^

I'm married, husband introduced me to kdramas after he was sick for a week and found them on Netflix. I was REALLY annoyed when he started obsessing over the stories and rewatching scenes, but then he made me watch one with him and it was adorable, and now he's created a monster. I tend to want to know everything about what I find interesting, which is great for my job (a doctor) but not so great when there are hundreds of kdramas I haven't seen. So I've had to temper my watching so my hubby doesn't leave me. Lol. However, when you start to get to know someone, and you like them, talking about interests is important to see if you can share a life with them. Some may be genuinely interested and curious, while other guys will shut you down without cause. But who would you rather be with? It might me a good litmus test. I had a bf in college when I was in my historical drama, books, Jane Austen phase. Poor guy had to watch Pride and Predudice--the Colin Firth BBC miniseries version--with me and he stayed around. He probably would have watched Goblin's 16 episodes with me! He was a great guy--still is. These are the ones you keep. And learn what is too much, not just for you, but for the guy too. With a relationship based on mutual respect, he'll live with your quirks and you will live with his--which would be what I would worry abou. What if he's addicted to NASCAR or Football or something? Would you talk to him about all the payers, stats, etc? It goes both ways. Hope this helps and good luck!

You should focus on finals and stay away from any drama. Finals only happen once, drama can wait for you. I cannot advice you"study, and then take a break for one hour watching drama," because it didn't worked for me. It is better to sleep during that one hour.

Other tips : take care of your health. This is the most important. Use time wisely. Whenever you feel lazy to study, think and imagine the rewards you will get for yourself after all these done such as drama marathon.? Consult your lecturers/teachers and always keep in touch with you friends (if you have no study group) so you won't miss any last minute information /hints etc.

Sadly, I'm going to have to agree with @seralovestteobokki - I'd stay away from dramas for now. They're such time drains and it's sooooo easy to get carried away (especially if you're someone with very little self-control like me!)

I'd say work smart, not hard. Easier said than done, of course, and something I still haven't mastered. Depending on your subject, I find things tend to stick better if I have a 'hook' to remember them by. For example, can you make a mnemonic out of it (e.g. ROY G BIV for the colours of the rainbow)? Or relate a funny saying/story to it ('I ate and ate until l was sick on the floor' to remember 8 x 8 = 64)? Also, having to explain the concepts to someone is a really good way to consolidate what you've learned and test how well you know it. If it's something like a language, you can try flashcards (I made some and taught myself the hangul alphabet in a week!)

Hopefully at least one of these tips will be of some use? Wishing you the best of luck - you can do this! Fighting! x

Do not study before your finals. Seriously. You should only be skimming your notes, but do not cram memorizing your notes 1-2 days before exam. It's better to read and learn every day. Cramming never works for me. I have to pay attention to teachers in class, and books are just supplementary. The more I understand the lesson, the easier studying is for me. Good luck on your finals!!

Drama-wise, it's pretty silent. Going to watch this week's Suspicious Partner and see where it goes. Otherwise, anticipating Lookout next week! And I'm hoping my friend has time to watch Age of Youth with me sometime soon... it's her first time watching it, and a rewatch for me.

My k-indie panel last week had some technical difficulties connecting to Shinae An Wheeler of The Barberettes (check out her performance on Masked Singer!), but it still went pretty well! It's always interesting to hear the various perspectives.

Trying out a k-indie feature, as kindly suggested last week. I guess I'll post here and on my wall for now, haha.

CCQ's K-indie Feature
봄이 되어 꽃은 피고 (Spring comes, flowers bloom) from Rumble Fish

From their 3rd album Open the Safe, 봄이 되어 꽃은 피고 is a hauntingly gorgeous song, helped very much by Choi Jin-yi's beautiful vocals. My Korean is not very advanced, but I interpret it as while you cannot forget the day they left, time continues to go on through the days and seasons.

So I finished Jealousy Incarnate and couldn't get back to my usual routine. I still haven't watched the last 2 episodes of TLAHL! My variety shows are waiting for me and yet I'm rewatching YOF Iceland coz well, JO JUNGSEOK! Why is he so awesome?!

Anyway, we have a long weekend over here and I don't have work in the weekend! I have three days away from work! I'm so happy. Haven't had a day off for two weeks now. Yay! I hope everyone will have an awesome weekend as well~!

Happy 500!

Am enjoying watching "Ruler" - started watching it because my bias Hwang Chi Yeul is part of the OST line-up (his OST can be heard at the end of each episode). Am amazed by the awesome acting of Yoo Seung Ho and Kim So Hyun.

I'll be going to watch Chi Yeul at his mini-concert in Singapore next Sunday - if his Ruler OST is released in time, maybe he'll sing it? :) Can't wait!

Chi Yeul will also be appearing on "I Can See Your Voice 4" - this time as a guest singer. So happy for and proud of him!

Chi Yeul - I love him on Immortal Songs 2 as a host, now. He got his areal start there (a big boost after being unknown since his debut some 9 years earlier) and hasn't quit amazing us ever since. I hadn't realized he was the OST singer, very cool ~

Hi owl22, he's doing quite well as a host on IS2 but we sure would like to see him sing more often. As I posted above, and it's an open secret already, please watch him on KoMS tomorrow (Sunday) :)

The sweet story about his Ruler OST is that the producer/composer is the same person who worked with Chi Yeul on his album in 2007.

TGIF and happy 500! According to DB records, my first open thread post with the current username was OT #55, in Nov 2008 round election time. O my, time flies! Thanks for giving us beanies a space to talk about everything drama and non drama related!

Hi! I have a quick question: I used to really like the changing Dramabeans banners at the top of every page. Since the switch to the new site the banner remains the same when reading articles (show's banner is displayed for recaps). Is it the same for everyone else?

Yes, I believe it's the same for all of us. It may have to do with the fact that the banner now can have the 'Favorite' feature as part of it. We get great new features ? but I guess the rotating banners had to go. ?

whoa, we're at OT #500?! How time flies.

Rebel is over and now idk what to do with myself - none of the other airing/recently concluded dramas quite appeal, which is probably a sign of how thoroughly Rebel has spoilt me. (can't even talk about it here until the recap goes up but I loved it so much)

My feelings exactly! But now I have Pinnochio and Sassy Go Go on my watch list. Well, and KDSBH, but I'm still scared of picking it up again, even though I know by now that writer-nim won't let me down.

@pogo1 Yeah, I can't even start watching other dramas until Rebel's last episode recap out XD
@latteholic I'm considering to finish MDBC (which I left somewhere at episode 10-ish) to see how was Chae Soo Bin's character doing in that drama

You didn't like Typewriter?

I'm also watching MSR and Suspicious Partner - liking the latter quite a bit cuz of Nam Ji-hyun, and she's got good chemistry with Ji Chang-wook.

How's the taiga coming along? I'm watching Border, pretty solid so far.

Heh, are you his fan? I have to admit, he's pretty versatile. It also helps that I like his voice. I thought he was rather wasted in Ouroboros.

@spazmo
You're very welcome! I liked it too, just that I wasn't as awed and thought Matsuda Ryohei was rather shortchanged as Beppu. But Matsu Takako was wonderful as usual.

My wife is not a fan of Yoo Ah-In. She would much rather watch Ji Chang Wook.

The Taiga is pretty good. The OTP haven't had a chance to get together yet, it might change soon.

Ji Chang-wook is doing pretty well in Suspicious Partner.

Good to know about the taiga. I'd wondered about it since it's Shibasaki Kou's first time leading a taiga. But ehh... Miura Haruma?

Hi, I'm Lydia from Ghana . How can I easily download kdramas? I mostly buy and watch, but it's more fun watching on your phone and it's a little expensive here (time, airtime etc.)

When I went to Ghana last summer I would download them between midnight-5am from sites like dramacool and myasiantv. I'm not too sure about downloading on your phone because every episode is about 1-2GB
