Fight My Way: Episode 3
by LollyPip
There’s nothing wrong with living an ordinary life—unless you can’t forget the dreams of your youth, then that ordinary life can begin to feel like a prison. But even though it seems as though realizing your dreams would solve everything, sometimes those wants and desires bring with them a whole host of new problems to face.
Round 3: “Don’t touch”
We watch as all four of our misfits wake in the morning, some more easily than others. Ae-ra watches the news, snarling jealously at the scantily-clad weathercaster. Her roommate Seol-hee knows that Ae-ra is cranky because it’s nearing open recruitment time for announcers, and she urges Ae-ra to apply.
Ae-ra takes breakfast across to Dong-man’s apartment, letting herself in when he doesn’t answer the door. She can hear him singing (badly) in the shower and chuckles that he’s going to be so embarrassed when he comes out.
Dong-man finally exits the bathroom with just a towel slung around his hips (hooray!), singing his little heart out. He sees Ae-ra and squeals that he told her not to just come in like this. Ae-ra is a bit flustered by the sight of so much bare skin, so she turns around to reach for some bowls.
She nearly drops the bowls straight on her head, causing Dong-man to run across the room to grab them. All of those lovely muscles end up pressed against Ae-ra’s back and she turns around, wide-eyed. They both freeze, the proximity affecting them both.
Ae-ra goes a little starry-eyed and even puckers up a bit. Dong-man just blinks at her weird eyebrow treatment, and suddenly he can’t even look at her. When they sit to eat, Ae-ra scratches her head, wondering if she’s so itchy because she hasn’t showered. Dong-man deadpans, “Let’s try not to see each other in the mornings.” PFFT.
He declines a call, obviously lying that it’s just spam when Ae-ra asks about it. Ae-ra launches into a tirade, saying that it had better not be “her,” because she threatened to kill “her” if she ever bothers Dong-man again. They must be talking about Hye-ran, the announcer whose divorce is making the news.
Ae-ra finds that a mysterious package has been left for her when she gets to work, but she hesitates to open it. She’s worried that it’s not really for her, and that the true owner will show up and demand compensation if the expensive packaging is ruined.
Dong-man continues to dodge the mysterious phone calls throughout the day. He just sighs when the caller texts him, threatening to show up on his doorstep if he doesn’t answer.
At lunchtime, Hye-ran enters the restaurant where Ae-ra is eating and makes a beeline for her. She joins Ae-ra and ignores her own food, saying that she’s dieting and that the food is for someone else.
Ae-ra doesn’t believe Hye-ran’s claim that their meeting is a coincidence. Hye-ran just asks for Dong-man’s phone number—or even better, his address. Ae-ra fibs that she doesn’t have Dong-man’s number anymore, because they’ve lost touch since he got married and moved away. HA.
She growls that it’s proper etiquette for a single woman not to call a married man. She fakes as if she’s going to throw her drink in Hye-ran’s face, causing Hye-ran to betray a satisfying flinch, then tells her forcefully to leave Dong-man alone.
At a job, Dong-man’s senior tells Dong-man to do all the work, saying that it’s the Korean way to follow proper hierarchy. Dong-man takes the guy’s sprayer and accidentally-on-purpose sprays him with it, pretending not to know how it works, hee.
At the home shopping network, Seol-hee is tapped to appear in a short video of people enjoying some cherries. While filming, she notices her boyfriend Joo-man talking with Ye-jin, the pretty employee who’s interested in him. Seol-hee chokes on a cherry, and Joo-man runs over to give her the Heimlich (in slo-mo, with the theme song from “The Bodyguard” giving the scene a little extra hilarity).
The cherry goes flying but Seol-hee isn’t breathing. Joo-man dramatically sweeps the bowls of cherries from the table, throws her down on it, leaps on top of her, and starts doing chest compressions. He even performs mouth-to-mouth, right there in front of everyone.
Unconscious, Seol-hee relives a memory from a grade school play, when she’d been chosen to play Snow White to Dong-man’s Prince Charming. Dong-man had been unable to kiss Seol-hee/Snow White, whining and making Seol-hee cry. Ae-ra, in the crucial role of “the tree,” had whapped Dong-man upside the head and ordered him to kiss Seol-hee.
Seol-hee, whose fantasy had always been to be Snow White, opens her eyes to see her very own Prince Charming standing over her after kissing her back to life. Joo-man screams about the cherries in yogurt (the snack Seol-hee choked on), lashing out from the adrenaline rush after seeing her nearly die.
At the department store, Ae-ra hears that the girl who normally makes store announcements took a leave, and sees an opportunity. She approaches MANAGER KIM (In Gyo-jin) with an energy drink, making it clear that she’s interested in the job opening.
Seol-hee helps Joo-man clean up the cherry-filled studio, grinning happily—until Ye-jin tells Joo-man that she wishes she’d been the one who choked. Joo-man gives a noncommittal response, but Seol-hee still throws cherries at him to express her displeasure, hee.
Dong-man does his work, muttering about his annoying, high-handed senior. He barks into the phone when Ae-ra calls him to come to her store, saying that she has big news, though of course he goes.
Manager Kim gives Ae-ra a chance to do the announcements, and if she does well, the job is hers. She asks Dong-man to record her first announcement, and at first he complains that it’s silly, but then he gets all excited and says he needs time to scout out a good location near a speaker.
She does well, and listens to the recording later with Dong-man. Ae-ra bursts into tears, thrilled at the way it felt to do what she loves. Dong-man thoughtfully asks if doing what she loves is really that amazing.
A mysterious man comes by the store asking for Ae-ra, and the information attendant says that she’s the one doing the announcement. He leaves, taking the sinister package with him.
That night, as she’s leaving work, Ae-ra gets the feeling that she’s being watched. She thinks of the three men whose cars she vandalized, regretting having given them her name and place of employment. She breaks into a run, but a black van cuts her off and at the same time, the man catches up and clamps a hand on her shoulder. Ae-ra grabs the man-beating bag that Dong-man bought for her, giving it a mighty swing and knocking the man down.
She smacks him with the bag over and over, screaming at him to leave her alone. A woman and her young son get out of the van, proving that it wasn’t as dangerous as it seemed. Ae-ra stops swinging and looks at the man—it’s Moo-bin, the mild little sweetheart she met at the wedding.
They get Moo-bin cleaned up and Ae-ra asks why he was following her. He presents her with the package that was left for her earlier, and Ae-ra opens it to find a pair of pretty pink sneakers. A heart-shaped note asks her to wear them after work and meet him at the store entrance. Awww.
Moo-bin remembers that she broke a shoe kicking out those jerks’ side view mirrors, so he explains that he got these for any future kicking plans she may have. Not at all charmed, Ae-ra asks angrily if this is a new bet between him and his friends, but Moo-bin insists that it’s not.
He says earnestly that he hasn’t been able to stop thinking about Ae-ra, so he came up with this plan. He babbles that he got a new jacket, a haircut, and made reservations for dinner. Taken aback, Ae-ra admits to herself that he’s kind of cute, especially the part where he filled his car up with gas in case she wanted to go for a ride.
Moo-bin asks if Ae-ra has a boyfriend, and she’s all, What if I don’t? Moo-bin seizes the moment and asks her to go out with him ten times, saying that he’ll do his best to impress her. He can tell that she’s flustered, and with a smile, he urges her to put on the sneakers. He even kneels to help, and although Ae-ra knows that her feet are too big for them, she slides a foot into one shoe.
Ae-ra’s words about doing what you love have strongly affected Dong-man, and he finds himself at Coach Hwang’s gym again that night. He works up the nerve to go inside, and he breathlessly asks Coach Hwang if he’d be able to make a lot of money if he got back into martial arts.
It’s the wrong question for Coach Hwang, who says that Dong-man should be thinking about things like his dreams and doing his best at life. Dong-man argues that he needs money to realize his dreams, like buying his mother a house and his father a new car.
Almost frantically, he adds that he needs money to protect Dong-hee, adding that he can’t afford to try this if he’s just going to fail. Coach Hwang tells Dong-man that if his goal is to make money, then he needs to stay far away from him.
Distraught, Dong-man thinks back to that day in 2007, the day that changed his life. He’d fought in a match, and we see his opponent arguing with Coach Hwang before the fight, refusing to do… something.
Ae-ra calls her father to tell him about making the announcements today, and her dad is thrilled and offers to come to the city to hear her. Ae-ra complains that her dad is super lame, but she’s obviously excited that he’d come so far to see her.
She jumps on the bus to find Dong-man already there, and he hilariously pretends to be asleep so he won’t have to give her his seat. She knees him in the leg, then pinches his nose and mouth shut and sweetly bids him to get up. He obeys, then spends the ride home glaring at her while she simpers.
They run into Seol-hee outside their building, whose takeout ddukbokki pairs well with the beer and soju they’re carting home. The girls do a little happy dance while Dong-man complains that they’re bonkers, then they head up to the roof through a secret entrance.
They have a whole bar set up there, which they worry may be discovered by the new landlord, who recently moved into the building. Ae-ra wonders if she’s a ghost, since nobody has seen her entering or leaving her apartment. The new landlord is strange—we wee her slip outside wearing a dramatic flowing dress and clutching a crucifix necklace. She looks around nervously, wondering why she keeps hearing voices.
While Ae-ra makes soju bombs for herself and Dong-man, Seol-hee pleads for something stronger than her yogurt drink. Ae-ra refuses on the grounds that Seol-hee gets sloppy drunk after only one shot, but Seol-hee snatches her drink and swallows a sip.
Ae-ra asks if something happened today. Seol-hee says that nothing happened, but then she complains about girls who wear jewels on their fingernails and seem to come to work just to dress up. Oblivious, Dong-man keeps asking if the girl is pretty, but Ae-ra knows what this is about and asks if the girl is after Joo-man. Seol-hee decides she’s being silly and waves away Ae-ra’s concern.
Dong-man says that he has a very important question: Do girls like mixed martial arts? LOL. Once again it’s Ae-ra who intuits what he’s trying not to say, and she pins a suspicious eye on Dong-man and asks what he’s up to.
Seol-hee shuffles off to bed, Ae-ra and Dong-man advising her not to drunk-dial Joo-man. Ae-ra stays behind to listen to the recording of her announcement again, and Dong-man urges her to try for an announcer’s job. But Ae-ra refuses, and when Dong-man presses her for a reason, she says that she doesn’t want to be just a pretty prop. She knows that with her specs, she doesn’t stand a chance at getting the job she really wants.
She asks Dong-man about his dream, which he says is to be rich. He lies down next to her on the table and steals the roll of toilet paper she’s using as a pillow, so Ae-ra grabs his arm to rest her head on. She continues chattering at him, barely noticing that he’s gone stiff, his hand clenched. She tells him to relax his arm, and he says it is relaxed, even as his face goes red from the strain of making a fist.
They talk about their school days, and how their dreams had changed daily. Dong-man decides that it’s better to pretend not to have a dream, and Ae-ra agrees that it makes no sense to have a dream when your reality sucks. She closes her eyes and turns to face Dong-man, and with alarm, he warns her not to fall asleep.
He stops griping to get a close look at her, then says, “You have tiny nostrils.” (HA, nobody ever accused him of having any game.) He also notices her soft skin and reaches out to touch her face, but Ae-ra’s eyes fly open and she tells him he’d better not.
She sits up, reminding him that she told him this the other night when he hugged her (after getting him out of jail). She tells him again not to ever touch her, and Dong-man yelps incredulously that the way she’s acting, someone would think he’d groped her.
To prove that skinship means nothing to a dope like him, Ae-ra leans in to hug Dong-man tightly. She says that of course he doesn’t feel anything, not the way a sensitive girl like her does. But by the dumbstruck look on Dong-man’s face (not to mention the fact that he’s stopped breathing entirely), I’d say she just broke his brain. Ae-ra leaves him and heads down to her apartment, wondering when it got so hot.
Joo-man wakes to find Seol-hee in his bedroom, packing his laptop into a new bag. He complains about how much it cost her when she’s still carrying around a tattered old purse, saying that it makes him feel like she’s his mom. Seol-hee pouts, asking if he doesn’t like her anymore, and he rushes to assure her that he does.
The four friends head to work and notice Coach Hwang’s soondae cart outside their building. They wave Dong-man over to talk to the coach, who pretends not to see Dong-man. He teases Coach Hwang, saying that he’s not his type, earning a butt-bump from the grouchy coach. He asks why Coach Hwang is here, but the coach just says, “Will you do it?” with no explanation, so Dong-man turns to leave.
Coach Hwang peevishly throws a couple of mixed martial arts championship tickets at Dong-man, yelling that he came here to give him those. He calls Dong-man a traitor for not granting him a simple wish, but Dong-man just asks what time the fight starts.
As Ae-ra struts into work, she’s shocked to hear another voice making an announcement. She goes to the sound booth to find Manager Kim hovering over a pretty girl, who tells Ae-ra that she’s the new announcer. Manager Kim tries to push Ae-ra out of the booth, but they’re joined by the store owner, who asks what’s going on.
Ae-ra says angrily that she was told she would at least get an interview, calling this a breach of trust between labor and management. She notices the store owner’s discomfort, so she adds that this could turn out to be a labor issue. It’s enough to scare the store owner into ordering Manager Kim to give Ae-ra a fair interview.
Dong-man tries to talk to his senior about the way he’s making him do all the work. His senior tells him to pull over just so he can kick Dong-man in the shin, then poke him in the shoulder, trying to push him to quit. Tired of being subservient to this ass, Dong-man just barely controls himself.
The announcer school graduate goes to the restroom to call her sister, who happens to be the wife of the store owner, screeching at her to make her husband give her the job. She doesn’t know that Ae-ra was in a stall and overheard everything.
Ae-ra and the other candidate have to recite something for their interview, and the other girl does well with her news bite about gas prices. But Ae-ra’s off-the-cuff (but more relevant for a department store) announcement of a sale in the food department impresses them.
But the store owner decides to go with the other girl, and he tells Ae-ra to go back to the job she was hired to do. Ae-ra agrees that she’s older, didn’t graduate from announcer’s academy, and has no connections, so of course she’d lose. But as she stands, she says that the owner should never had raised her hopes by giving her an interview if she wasn’t going to be fairly considered.
She goes back to her information desk, and every time the new girl makes an announcement it’s like a dagger in her heart. She texts her dad not to come visit, and as she assists customers, something in her eyes dies a little.
Later she goes outside to find Dong-man waiting for her, looking very serious. He says he just wanted to have lunch, noticing that she’s wearing her information desk uniform. They go up to the roof, where Ae-ra tells Dong-man that she can’t sit still all day like the announcer’s job requires, so she turned it down.
Seeming to know that she’s not telling the truth, Dong-man just listens, then he slides over to lean his back against her. He says that his back is wide enough to hide her, telling her to cry when she feels like crying. Ae-ra’s chin wobbles, then she starts to ugly-sob as Dong-man murmurs about how mean those people were to give her the job and take it away when it made her so happy.
Dong-man puts an arm around Ae-ra, stretching it across the back of the bench to avoid touching her. He holds up his jacket collar awkwardly, making sure that nobody can see her crying. Eventually he gives up and pushes her head onto his chest, patting her shoulder and letting her get it all out.
At his gym, Coach Hwang eats sausages with an adorably chubby little boy, who says that his mom wants him to stop learning martial arts. Coach Hwang pulls a note off the boy’s back, left there by bullies, and sends him to practice his kicks. Dong-man walks in and sits down like it’s no biggie, announcing that he got hit (by his senior).
Whining that his students keep getting beat up, Coach Hwang offers Dong-man a sausage just like the little boy before him. Dong-man casually mentions the martial arts fight, saying breezily that he’ll go once to watch since it’s Coach Hwang’s wish.
When they get to the arena, Coach Hwang is like a happy little bunny, while Dong-man tries to act like none of this is affecting him. He says that this is the end of their martial arts history together, and that from now on he’ll call him hyung instead of coach. Coach Hwang just says no and leads Dong-man inside.
Dong-man is bored by the fights, or at least he claims to be. Coach Hwang makes him stay, saying that the last fight will be better. He watches Dong-man carefully as the star of tonight’s fight is announced—Kim Tak-soo, the very fighter that Dong-man faced on the night he gave up martial arts for good.
Dong-man’s expression goes eerily still as he watches Tak-soo strut into the fighting cage. Memories of their fight push their way into his mind, and he looks like he may cry. But Coach Hwang tells Dong-man to look at how well Tak-soo is living now, asking why Dong-man should hang his head in shame when Tak-soo is practically a rock star.
In a quiet voice, Dong-man pleads, “Coach, why are you being so cruel to me?”
Epilogue.
On the steps of their building, Dong-man tenderly pats Ae-ra’s hair, unperturbed when she complains that he’s touching her again. He just says in an adoring voice that she’s ugly, then sniffs his hand to smell her hair. He reels at the stench, which sets off another round of bickering before they stomp off to their apartments.
COMMENTS
Poor Dong-man—I see what Coach Hwang was trying to do, but I’m not sure this is the right way to go about it. I know the coach wants to snap Dong-man out of his apathy when it comes to martial arts, and to light a fire in his belly by showing him how well his former rival is doing. But Dong-man seems just as likely to boomerang in the opposite direction, swearing off martial arts for good from the shock. For a tough guy, Dong-man is surprisingly sensitive, and approaching him from even a slightly wrong angle could ruin his chances of ever going after his dream again. I really hope this doesn’t backfire.
I just can’t get over how cute Ae-ra and Dong-man are together, and how well they know each other inside and out. Ae-ra knows that Dong-man will do pretty much anything she asks, being the clear alpha in the relationship. And even though Dong-man grumbles and complains every step of the way, there’s never any question that Ae-ra’s wish is his command. In fact, his dopey whining is flat-out adorable, the way he shifts from complaints to support to complaints again, all in the same irritated tone of voice. His younger self was a whiner too, but he’s learned to cover it up with bluster and fake gruffness, so his delicate temperament has matured into an endearing sort of reluctant, grouchy devotion.
And Ae-ra has changed, too—she’s no longer the brutally blunt, loud and bossy tyrant she was when they were kids. Now she uses her security in their friendship to get what she wants from Dong-man, but never in a manipulative way. She knows that his objections are all for show and that he’ll do anything she asks, so it’s more like she’s just having fun with him, enjoying the grumpy act he puts on. It’s a very different way of bickering than we usually see in dramas, and I find it super fun and entertaining.
It’s also fun to see how much they each affect the other; even if their hearts haven’t figured out their feelings, their bodies sure have. They can barely stand to touch each other without getting all hot and bothered, and I can’t wait until they figure out that it’s attraction, and not the weather, heh. Their internal feelings play out in the physical as well, with Dong-man continually trying to initiate (what he tells himself is) casual skinship, and Ae-ra curtly ordering him to just keep his hands off altogether. But they have such a great emotional connection too, each knowing what the other is feeling before they do. The way Dong-man made it okay for Ae-ra to stop being strong and just cry was one of the sweetest moments I’ve ever seen in a drama. These two are just such soulmates, it’s amazing that they don’t know it yet. I love that, when many dramas would focus on how romantic feelings begin between old friends, we’re dropped into the middle of an already-blossoming romance. In Dong-man and Ae-ra’s case, nothing will change—all the need to do is acknowledge what already exists.
Speaking of romance, I really like the way the show makes so many parallels with fairytales, like Seol-hee’s Snow White fantasy and Ae-ra’s Cinderella conundrum. The comparisons can be a bit heavy-handed, the way scenes from the originals are acted out exactly and even the songs from the Disney versions playing at precisely the right times, but somehow it works. The show itself is a bit like a Disney movie, bright and simple yet bigger-than-life, so the moments feel at home within the story.
Sadly, unlike Seol-hee’s prince saving her with true love’s kiss, Ae-ra’s Cinderella story doesn’t quite work with her would-be Prince Charming. As cute and squishy as Moo-bin is (and as tickled as I am that Choi Woo-shik seems settled in for an extended cameo), he’s not the right fit for her. The too-small sneakers he presented to Ae-ra are a big red flag that these are the wrong glass slippers, and this is the wrong prince. Ae-ra isn’t your average princess, and she’s never going to be happy with an average love story.

I'm just waiting to find why both of them gave up their dreams and are fighting so hard to NOT go after them. I must admit I find some of the story boring, but I'm still invested enough in the characters to keep me coming back.

For Ae-ra, I think it's simply because she wasn't able to go to a good university (she ranked low in her high school class) and kept losing opportunities to people with better educational backgrounds and connections. The resigned way she gave up on the interview despite giving the better answer and returned to her old post makes me think she just grew tired of pursuing her dreams after repeated rejections.
Dong-man's reason is more dramatic, and Kim Tak-soo is part of it. I can't wait to find out exactly what happened.

Each year Aera doesn't get her dream, it ends up being further away since the youth-obsessed culture doesn't look well on older people trying to get a start. It was painful when the interviewer guy asked that girl how old she was.

My main problem is that they're giving me practically nothing about the two other leads, so my only impression of them so far is that they're the so called "best friends" living together with AR and DM... and that's about it. It means that I can only root for AR so far, as well as AR and DM's budding romance and while it's keeping me watching, I don't want to watch this show just to see their cutesy scenes together.
But I do really want to know what happened with Tak Su. I believe the roadblock to AR's dreams is that she didn't have good grades nor connections, and it's been "too little, too late" for her.
Side note: Tak Su's entrance looked more like a k-pop idol concert, and I'm pretty sure DM didn't feel nothing when AR got all touchy with him, heh.

I agree, I just don't feel the vibe that these four are tight childhood BFFs. It's more like they're roommates bordering on good friends.
That said, maybe it's a deliberate part of the plot? Like the flashbacks show their friendship and now as adults they've somehow scattered and lost that connection. You can grow up with the same bunch of people and eventually grow apart in some way - because of life changes like having other priorities or interests.

Totally agree with your comment! I'm also not yet sold in the feeling of their long friendship because they feel more like roommates to me. I keep going back to the scene where DM tells AR to not see each other in the morning and it just doesn't seem to be a long friends thing. DM should have said something like I told you not to do that in front of me or something to make it feel like it this scenario happened a lot.
I think though, I'm comparing it with Answer Me 1997, which showed the best way to be friends then BF/GF

I think some parts that I can do without would be Dong-Man's horrible boss and his seniority issues. We get it he's horrible, let's move on to the cheesy and pretty please.

As much as I'm loving the characters, I agree with you and I'm hoping they can amp up the story a bit in that regard. I think Ae-ra just tired and jaded. I assume that what happened in this episode has happened many times before. When you feel like it's not going to happen no matter how good you are or how hard you try, it's easy to give up. I think everyone can relate to this in some way. It's a much more grounded story line and is something that happens to so many people. This is why I'm actually more interested in her story at the moment and I'm excited to see how she rises above all the snobbery and nepotism.

So true. I'm also surprisingly into how much emphasis the drama puts on Ae-ra’s looks; I mean she’s talented AND pretty and she’s *still* not getting her dream job. I’m obviously rooting for her but I like how realistic this drama is and it's refreshing to see how great looks doesn’t solve every problem.

Seeing Ae Ra next to Hye Ran made it so glaring that Ae Ra needs to way step it up in the glam dept to be at broadcaster level (but maybe that happens to you after you become a broadcaster?). Hye Ran has all the money in the world and the playing field couldn't be more uneven, the show has done a good job of illustrating the contrast in their "looks" at this point.

I think its because they've been long time friends that they never realized their feelings for each other. Like, they're comfortable with the situation now and are secure in it (ex. WFKBJ Joon Hyung's brother and his best friend) that's why there's no conscious thought of "making her/him mine". They need huge catalyst that would trigger an affirmation and 'want' to be in a relationship with each other. They need to be hit with a situation that triggers the thought "I don't want to lose him/her"

It's hard when you're such close friends, I think. Plus it's possible their feelings have just been that of close friends for the majority of their relationship, and it's only now that they are both single and struggling that they are starting to feel something more.

It's not so surprising. They've even been friends through each other's relationships. For long-time close friends, it'd be hard to distinguish between the affection, care, and consideration that comes with friendship and the feelings of something more. You love your friends, but how do you know the nature of that love? Where's the line? Also, if you keep telling others and yourself that you're just friends, you start to believe it too. So if they had any inklings of attraction, they're probably squished right away by denial and other relationships.

Yeah. Let's face it, men and women CAN be friends with each other. I've got a number of male friends. But I have zilch attraction for them or towards them. It is very hard to be friends with a man you are attracted to - I mean, that puts it in unrequited crush territory. If I ever feel this way even a little about a friend, I push it down - HARD. So I think what we're meant to see here is an awakening physical attraction to one another, something they may have been subcionsciously pushing down for years in order to keep the friendship intact, and that Dong-man is allowing to surface.
I wouldn't be friends with Dong man, I think. I'd be in constant state of denial! But I've had and continue to have gorgeous male friends - they just aren't attractive to me because I know them too well!

It's interesting to me how their relationship works, because I had a similar one when I was younger and we fluctuated constantly between having one-sided-crushes on each other and just being best friends...the problem was that we never liked each other in *that* way at the same time, so it just never took off. I think when you grow up together it's possible to phase in and out of liking each other and eventually end up just as friends...but of course in this case we know it's going to end up as something else entirely!!^^

I'm so glad Kim Ji Won finally landed a lead role, and we get this beautifully relatable character in Choi Ae Ra! Seriously, her crying scenes get to me because I super relate to her struggles as a mid/late 20's woman struggling in the life department.
Also, I feel like Aera and Dongman's relationship is the way it is because old habits die hard. Even though they're sooooo good for each other, they grew up treating each other like siblings - especially how kid DM told kid AR that he's not going to marry her. I can't wait to see how friendship will brew into love, but their romance still be rooted in friendship. You don't see a lot of that in dramaland!

I like the way this drama show the struggle of ordinary young people trying to live their life. It really is disappointing. You really can't help your connections if you're born into a lower or middle class family. So you have that strike against you the moment you entered the world. The educational background could be achieved, but chances are slim. Only a small fraction of the university can get into the very few prestigious universities. Age just works against every year that you grow older.
I do wonder even if Aera got a broadcast career right after college, if the industry is as ageist as to be believed, it may not have been a good career choice anyways unless you're like Hye-ran and managed to hook a rich guy.

I don't find Dog Man's coach as harsh, he's actually just how all the martial arts coaches are... they're strict and are mean with their students most of the times as the game itself needs one to be mean just for the sake of competition, otherwise one wouldn't be able to hit his opponent, I think those who're martial artists will only be able to understand this.

This show just has hearts all over the places. I haven't regretted any moment I spent watching this one.
There are many things I like about this episode. I love that the episode starts off by putting all four of them together. Now I know that all four of them live in the same place/area. It's bittersweet to see that while they are still close friends even now the same way they did in the past, one of them seems to progress more rapidly than others - and that's Joo Man.
The scene when the cherry stuck in Seol Hee's throat and Joo Man came rushing to help was really hillarious. Eventhing was in perfect timing - the bgm, the acting and everything just made Seol Hee Snow White and Joo Man her prince charming. I really loled at that set of scenes.
I love the romantic feeling which is blossoming between both Dong Man and Ae Ra. Ae Ra is my new girl crush - that's for sure. She is sassy and badass in the most lovely way. She is authentic, genuine and frank. I think I can relate to that. Doesn't every girl has faced that kind of situations in her life when her close male friend started acting all weird and that she was scared of what would happen if she let him get closer to her? That hug scenes felt so real .. and the way Dong Man got frozen really reminded me of some mistakes I did in the past - poor me for being so naive haha.
I love the friendship between the leads and don't mind if the thing between them turns out not to be the romantic success in the end. Their relationship is very cute and feels very genuine that I don't mind it being like this forever (I mean okaayyy I also want the flower to bloom between them but its current state is so cute I don't mind it being like this too). The relationship between the second lead couple is also very cute. Though I cannot relate to it personally, I've seen some people in my circle had that kind of relationship. I'm sure that some of them might be able to relate to the second lead couple's story as well.
Let's say that I love everything in this episode - the scenes when they played Snow White at school were so hillarious I'm loving Ae Ra more and more. The way she - as a tree- hit Dong Man when he couldn't seem to kiss Seol Hee was just perfect. Everything is so perfect in my opinion that right now I'm so addicted to it and actually addicted to it more than my long-time-awaited My Sassy Girl.
JI'll end this long comment of mine by quoting what kind @lollypip has put it "The show itself is a bit like a Disney movie, bright and simple yet bigger-than-life, so the moments feel at home within the story." So true @lollypip, so true.

I didn't really care about the second leads' relationship (yet) but that cherry scene seals the deal, it's hilarious (omg the BGM and slomo kills me) and the knight in shining armor scene is, for some strange reasons, romantic. This is true. As someone who once had a guy best friend for more than a decade, it's hard to go back once you cross that line. Emotions can get confusing, it's difficult to tell if you're coming from being a friend vs wanting to be more than a friend. So true. Being good friends doesn't always necessarily mean they can be good boyfriends/girlfriends and that the romantic relationship would work out. It's scary to think that if it doesn't work out, you may lose your best friend of 20+ years. Even if you do come back around to being friends again, there would still be that awkwardness. I wouldn't want to lose a friend like Dong Man!

I think they know that they love the other more than just a friend. But being best friend for that long means their closeness is something natural and they are too used to take care of each other no matter what. Other people might see it and can see clearly that they are already acting like a lover. But they have been behaving like that for years that it's hard for them to see that as a sign of romantic feelings. And also, maybe they don't want to jeopardize their close friendship for something they still not sure about.
I don't really mind the slow progress of their relationship because I've met couple like them in real life. As long as they are always there for each other, I'm good.

You can't expect of course to have connections when you're a neophyte. But you have an edge because your new and young. You're not yet stubborn, and you're expected to not really question authority. That's where you start to build "connections." But, some researches reveal that many millennials tend to burn bridges especially if they are fed up and things don't go their way. lol
Agree with others that it is not as bad in drama, but there are industries that it is extremely "important" like in media and in the big conglomerates. It is a skill not taught in school. You'll learn it while you're at work already.

Connections can make a big impact no matter where you are. It would be more common in business fields, rather than health. Regulations are a lot more important if you want to be a doctor, so you'd still have to do the work. But perhaps it would be easier to get into a better medical school and management opportunities and promotions could be easier once you've become a doctor.
Industry and company culture can make a big impact, where companies like tech start-ups, for example, tend to have a culture of valuing talent and company fit. In this case, connections might help you get the meeting or interview, but you wouldn't just get the job. The understanding would be that hiring the right people means greater company success.
I might be making assumptions, so sorry if I offend anyone, but based on my Korean friends, dramas, and news, I feel like there are a lot more large family run companies or conglomerates. This tends to promote nepotism and I find that this idea of using connections to get jobs as a re-occurring theme in Korean dramas. One of my friends says working for this kind of company is hard because it can feel like there are few opportunities to move up if you're just a regular person with no connections. Perhaps there is someone with more knowledge who could enlighten me?
However, I have also seen this in Taiwanese and Japanese dramas. I do see it in American shows, like Gossip Girl, but it's a less commonly broached topic I think. And often I think Americans like to think they value talent and hardwork (the American Dream and all that) so they'll add in a twist (like the person just happens to be talented) to say otherwise, but it does happen. So I guess we can conclude that it does happen everywhere but to different extents and under different masks.

I know, I've seen this kind of subject touched upon in so many dramas (mainly Korean) that I've wondered to what extent this actually happens in real life. A lot of jobs involving business seem to be an advocate for this kind of thinking and it seems really unfair. I get that if two people had similar levels of experience or qualifications, then the one with connections would probably get the promotion but if the person w/o connections had better everything- do you think they'll still get the promotion?
I live in the U.K. and I've hardly heard of any of this over here. I feel like it probably still happens but if people found out, it would be quite a big scandal over here. I don't know if it's more socially accepted in other countries?

The way Ae-ra went about her interview and the outcome really breaks my heart I had been in the same position before, when you go to an interview you know you won't get because it was predecided who would be the one to get the job but they legally still had to advertise it. When you find out all that disappointment wells up but then you still hold out hope that you might impress them enough to give you a second thought to only be crushed again when reality sets in.
I hope the drama continues with this good mix of romance and career issues.
I'm so invested in our leads and their lives that I'm not feeling anything for our 2nd couple? When they appear I just want them to hurry up so I can watch the main, I think thats the only flaw I have right now.

Oh my god, you guys. I thought before that between the two of them, it's Dong Man that's self-aware, and this episode showed it! During that arm-under-her-head and hug-galore scene, Dong Man was tense the entire time, clearly flustered by Ae Ra's proximity. Ae Ra, on the other hand, recognized afterwards that she felt hot, but not the reason why. Dong Man's aware of the feelings that he has for her that aren't platonic, while Ae Ra isn't on the same level of self-awareness yet.
It'd be heart-thumping to watch the two of them reach the same page, be in complete tune with each other, and not have any moments of humor as an excuse to whisk away what they're feeling for each other (like in the epilogue, where Dong Man eased the tension by reacting pseudo-negatively to the smell of Ae Ra's hair ON HIS HAND, or when Dong Man came out of the shower HALF-NAKED AND PRESSED AGAINST AE RA to protect her, and he ruined the moment by commenting on her eyebrows).
This drama is continuously telling me to fight for my way, and I love it.
P.S. It's nice to see our Fantastic Four all together!

Actually, I thought that it was AR who was a little more aware last episode, and then this episode showed that DM wasn't oblivious either. She probably told him to stop being all touchy because after the hug last episode (and plus the naked chest pressing against her back this episode), she felt a little affected by it. They've been platonic for so long that she probably doesn't even want to think about romantic love in case it harms their great friendship.
I think it's pretty darned cute that they're both insisting to each other (and their inner minds) that it's totally platonic, when it's not at all. I can't wait for their budding romance to grow!

Thanks for the recap!
-There's so many tiny beats throughout this show that I love I can't list them all. I love how real and full this world and these characters feel.
-I was cackling at how dramatic JM was in saving SH.
-I love AR's dance moves. And DM complaining but recording her broadcast nonetheless. I basically love all of their interactions and I feel like I could say that 200x and still mean it just as much.
-Wow I actually also really love SH and her friendship with AR and DM too. I was slightly worried after the premier week that I would get bored with our secondary couple, but so far I still really like them too!
-DM's hair when he wanted to be a rockstar literally killed me. I still haven't recovered.
-Oh, the irony of AR hugging DM and holding his hand, saying "you're cool with these things but I'm not" - honey, if you'd take a second to look at his reaction, I think you'd be surprised.
-I hate that DM just grits his teeth and bears everything from his work sunbae. I 100% understand needing to stay quiet for the sake of your job and family etc., but it's so frustrating to see him being taken advantage of like that.
-KJW is doing such a good job with the part of AR. I was so struck by the little facial expressions when she was on the phone with her dad, trying to tell him not to visit while simultaneously holding back her tears.

Dong-man the rockstar wannabe got me in stitches.
And yes, I love that scene when she talked to her dad. It was like she wanted to tell him how awful her day was, how unfair the treatment she got at the interview was, but she also didn't want to make her dad worried and sad. And when she complained about how dad always asked whether she eat well, I cried. I bet Dad knew that something bad happened at work from her lies. It reminded me of my parents who would went along with my lies to protect my feelings eventhough they already suspected the truth.

Kim Ji Won has proved to be much much better an actress than I expected. I actually liked her very much since DOTS.. she has her pretty face and the way she did her job in that show just did justice to the show. However, as I didn't like her character in DOTS very much as I thought she was too clingy to a guy my impression of her just ended when that show ended. Now I'm placing her with Seo Hyun-Jin as my new to-watch actress.

I officially love Mondays once again especially after TLAHL ended, thanks to this drama! ❤ Ae Ra and Dongman are the sweetest (with sizzling chemistry) noncouple I've ever beheld in a long time, I hope I'm still breathing by the time they 'fess up about their feelings!
From the start of the episode, half-naked PSJ and weird-eyebrowed KSJ had me both swooning, squealing and giggling! And can I also say our second couple is also really cute too? Everything about this show, when I'm not sympathizing with Ae Ra and Dongman's pain, just makes me SMILE. ???
I can't believe Moobin is JUST a cameo! Why??? He was super cute, while I know the endgame is Ae Ra and DongMan, my heart is also swayed by the utter dorky adorableness of Moobin. He's such a perfect foil for big-hearted but not so bright but incredibly hot Dongman. I'm so excited to catch episode 4! Loving this show! ❤❤❤

I was very cautious getting into a new show for fear of being burnt. I went into Fight My Way feeling content that I kinda like where it is going, but this week's episode basically sealed my love for this show! Please be good, show!
I'm loving the slice of life kinda story going on in this show. I love what I'm seeing of the growing attraction between Ae-ra and Dong Man. They are exactly soulmates like @lollypip say. Finishing each other's words, knowing what's in their mind before even saying anything etc. I do wonder whether one of the reasons their past relationships didn't work out was because they are inseperable and bonded way too strongly that those of bff and their exes probably could see that from miles away.

This is such a cute show! DongMan was just awesome when he was comforting Ae Ra. Especially when it was obvious he'd just had a crappy day and could have used some care. Instead, he was her rock.
By the way Kim Ji Won was in a lead role in a small short drama with So Ji Sub called "One Sunny Day". It was one of those short (15 min) episodes with a total of 10 I think. But I loved it and watched it several times. That show was my first introduction to her and I thought she was luminous!!! In fact, I haven't liked her as much in anything else. So this role is great for her and I'm so glad she's getting a lead role.
Thanks for recapping this show. I'm so enjoying the unspoken/unaware/unacknowledged chemistry between these two best friends. You know, when they finally realize what's going on it will probably get a bit uncomfortable for a bit. But I can't wait to see that!

Thank you for the recap. This episode was really good. First of all, I really like how their relationship is built on such a strong foundation and it makes me really understand how they've lasted for this long. They both inspire each other, and they know each other so well better than anyone else. Dongman immediately saw right through Aera when she was stopping herself from crying. Dongman himself felt so hurt for her, knowing that she was so happy that she got that job (although she convinces herself she didn't want to do it).
I really appreciate Aera for protecting Dongman in her own way too, like how she faced off Dongman's ex, and how she threatened her.
I feel like, Dongman is the one who's having obvious feelings for her. Hence that indirect confession, while I'm not sure of Aera yet (although she does flutter when Dongman does sweet things for her).
I can't wait for the next episode though, I'm curious how Moobin will affect their relationship.
And finally, the fantastic four are in a shot together.

They need to be hit with a situation that triggers the thought "I don't want to lose him/her"
that's what I think

Thanks for the quick recap, Lollypip!!
I am loving this show more and more. It's different than the usual rom coms in its realness, which I like. No chaebols or candies - everyone is just normal. I love that the male lead is just a big dumb teddy bear (and looks like Park Seo Joon). Kim Ji Won is doing a great job too showing the emotion behind her tough exterior. I also like Seol Hee, who is a sweet doormat, but I haven't warmed up to her boyfriend yet - even though the rescue scene was hilarious. He needs a wakeup call for their relationship and I wish she would do a little more for herself.
All in all, I am loving the show and the adorable chemistry between the characters!

I felt so bad for Ae Ra not getting her dream job of being an announcer just because she didn't have connections and a stable education. She had to give up her dream years ago, and once another opportunity presented itself, she was rejected. As for Dong Man, I'm still quite curious as to why he had to give up tae kwon do. It seems as if Kim Tak Soo was a very important part of it. But, at least they were there for each other. Lastly, I love the moments when these 4 characters were reunited once again. I hope there will be more moments of them together to fight their way out of their third rate lives.

I love that the show makes sure to show us the strength of Dong-man and Ae-ra's friendship without hurrying to eclipse it with the romance.
And I equally love how the show hasn't forgotten the story that it's telling, about young-ish adults struggling to come to terms with where they want to be in their society/ lives/ world, versus the harsh reality of where they actually are. The conversation that AR and DM have on the rooftop, talking about how their teachers/ adults told them they could be anything they wanted when they grew up, just struck a chord. This probably isn't an issue exclusive to people born in my generation, but I feel like we, being born into a period of relative economic stability and prosperity (the 1990s +/- a decade) have been socialised, more so than kids born in earlier times, into this idea of pursuing our passion and having these great dreams that will come true, as long as we work hard enough. Sadly, things just don't work this way, and it's not often that we see drama characters struggling with mediocrity. I'm curious about where these characters will find themselves eventually.

I kinda understand why Coach is pushing DM to get back in martial arts. But sometimes, I get annoyed that he seems not to get DM's feelings and why he is hesitant to go back.
Is JM's sentiments when SH gave him a bag a foreshadowing of what trouble/conflict they will have in the drama?

Yes, Coach is pretty pushy and aggressive in his approach and it's understandable---Dong-man is talented but he's given up. Clearly Coach thinks Dong-man's reasons are not enough. Not when Dong-man clearly loves it, is good at it, and is instead wasting away at a job he doesn't like. Coach needs to change his approach, for sure, though. That kind of thing could make Dong-man run in the other direction.

To answer the question you posted, I think MSG is ok. JW is my favorite Korean actor at the moment so I watched MSG yesterday. As it is a pre-produced show so everything in it looks expensive and beautiful. The colors are vibrant.
However, the show is just starting off so I can't make any definite suggestion. I think the show has potential and really looks forward to it. I somehow hope that I can like Oh Yeon Seo more (since I like Joo Won very much), but right now I admit that I still can't see that chemistry between them (though I see the attempts from JW's side lol).

I know, right?! Why do they always think their former man is still single, secretly pining for their no good ex gfs to come back? I always get offended on behalf of the guy. I want a scene where the hero gets married to the heroine and then the ex-gf shows up a year later, oblivious and planning to get him back, only for everyone to go "Too late, sucker! he is happily married and has a kid now. Go crawl back to your cave"

Pretty much my thoughts about Ae Ra and Dong Man’s relationship have already been said. I agree with Lollypip’s comments about them too. ^^
Glad to see more of Seol Hee and Joo Man’s relationship this time. The JM-rescuing-SH scene was over-the-top, but that made it hilarious!
I adore Seol Hee and want to see more of her. She acted like a mother towards Ae Ra with their cute breakfast scene, but it was interesting that JM also called her the same. I’m curious about their relationship and how it will be affected due to changes and new conflicts. I imagine many things could happen:
- they’ve become too comfortable and lost some passion/heat,
- the co-worker lady keeps pursuing JM and he starts to feel attracted to her,
- he gets a higher job position and the difference in their job status becomes a problem.
I hope the future angst will be handled well and have a good resolution.
Feels like there are a lot of issues to tackle in this drama with Hye Ran in the picture. Don’t mind the different stories. Just don’t really want a love triangle happening.

I have not yet started watching this show and what i gather from the recap is that unlike other shows, where one is rich and other is poor, or people live in this lalala land of if you have a dream anything can happen once you discover it, it says the reality of it as brutal as it may sound.
I am personally a fresh graduate from a third world country (though i dont think developed countries have it any easy) and the struggle sucks. I remember in the school, how I had a timeline about our 20s and dreams and how the reality sucks. So thats what the show resonated with, atleast via recaps and how high school trauma sticks for life .. heh :P
So rather than lead pair love story, i fell in love with their struggle for life... Is it too crazy?

That is not crazy at all. Korean dramas do romance all the time, but what makes this drama really stand out is that it is relatable. Growing up, making compromises, and even shedding some dreams is all a part of life. Most of us aren't following our dreams and passions. We found happiness in the situation life has led us, in being good at what we do (even if it isn't the dream), in finding a good work-life balance, in things outside of work (hobbies, friends, family, kids). Even if it's a natural part of life, it is still really sad to say goodbye to dreams. Once you get to your late 20s like our characters, it does feel like doors start to close.

I know this is supposed to be a comedy, but it made me cry. It is hitting home because I can emphasize so well with both of them regarding their dreams. It broke my heart when I realized that my childhood dream was a complete fantasy and would never come true. Giving up was really hard. Even now, when I think about it so many years later, I feel hurt by it. So I really, really want it to work out for both of them in this show. More than this cute romance I want to see their dreams fulfilled.
