Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching

What’s on your slate this week? I have a ton of shows I meant to start this week, given that there were a lot of brand-new or still-newish shows to choose from… and yet, I mostly found comfort in old ones, which at least were comforting and satisfying in their own ways. I promise I’ll catch up on the new shows… someday… hopefully before they’re considered old shows.

Man to Man: The tone of the opener was a little more scattered than I was expecting, although I do think the action looks pretty spiffy and Park Hae-jin seems perfect for this character. But any K-drama that has an introduction that’s heavily foreign-shot (and -acted; mostly it’s the acting) is bound to make me cringe, so while I’m not holding it against this show for upholding that particular status quo, I’m also not particularly impressed, either. I’ll give it another week before I decide what I think.

Father, I’ll Take Care of You: Ha! At this point, I find it inadvertently hilarious how, despite all the bad blood and revenge plots and antagonism that’s gone down between the Han clan and Hyun-woo, the various Han family members still keep seeking him out, whether it’s to yell at him, plead with him, or ask him favors. There’s a reason why Koreans have that saying about how constant contact can turn even hate to grudging attachment. I half expect to see the Hans insisting they can’t stand Hyun-woo five years down the line, even as they drop by every weekend for Sunday dinner, or bring him birthday presents.

Father Is Strange: Mwahaha, life is about to get interesting with cocky Lee Joon moving into the cramped Byun household. I can’t imagine how he’ll last longer than a weekend, although watching him try will be all of the fun. Also, did anyone else cheer when Jung So-min’s conversation with her old bully was caught on Unni’s voice recorder? I can’t wait for Lee Yuri to stand up for her little sister, because it had better be epic. I’m a little sad that Dad had to take such a hit to his image as a devoted dad in order to convince the family to take in the supposed half-brother, but I can see how it was the only way. I just hope that will get smoothed over later when everyone realizes he’s still the honorable Dad they’d always believed him to be.

The Liar and His Lover: There are so many things I want to talk about but not enough space to get into them! Like how I love-hate (but mostly love) how the music snippets play in such teasing drops that I’m dying to hear the full song by the time we get it, or how Choi Min-soo is the perfect quirky dad. Or how I initially thought that watching Han-gyul really step it up, putting So-rim first and showing his faith in her at every step, was the best thing this week. But then all the Crude Play development and substitute-performance conflict erupted and threw everybody into intersecting, but discrete, tracks of desperation and I was moved at how deep the emotional threads run, and how this drama has intertwined them so thoroughly that they all feel part of the same pain, although each person experiences it from a different angle. I felt an unexpectedly strong blow at the realization that the Crude Play boys have been using Han-gyul’s supposedly inferior bass playing to practice with, when all along that’s been one of Han-gyul’s biggest insecurities. Although he’ll never beat out Chan-young on the inferiority complex front—it breaks my heart every time Chan-young realizes that he’s only a stand-in for the guy everybody likes better than him… which made that ending sacrifice extra heart-pinchy. My heart was already pretty bruised—I don’t know if it can take much more!

girlfriday

Man to Man: This drama is silly, wacky fun and I really enjoy the fish-out-of-water hijinks for Park Hae-jin the super spy surrounded by the weirdness of showbiz folk. His deadpan expressions are priceless, and it cracks me up that he’s in an action-thriller and everyone else is in a comedy, but neither side seems to notice that they’re inhabiting the same space.

Chicago Typewriter: The end of Episode 6 finally pulled the three leads together in a way that started to make me care, which I would still argue is too darned long to make me wait. But now that we’re here, I’m glad to delve into these characters’ previous lives as freedom fighters, friends, and lovers. Now in the present day, I’m not so sure how Se-joo plans to make amends for his foot-in-mouth syndrome for the millionth time. Maybe he should start by adopting the dog.

Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People: Yay for some forward movement. I have to admit—they totally got me when the people came to Gil-dong’s rescue and were so proud to stand up and fight by his side, even in the face of death. He inspires that in people, which is really the big development we’ve been working for. It was also a huge relief when the show stopped being trolly about Eorini and fleshed out her story. Nothing made me happier than when she called Gil-dong and Gil-hyun “oraboni” again.

Whisper: Well the villains certainly stepped up their game, didn’t they? I was getting fatigued by all the flip-flopping in the initial case, so I found it a nice change of pace when the baddies decided to inject some new mayhem into the story. I much, much prefer Lee Bo-young out of that office and on the run, and I’d pay cash money if they could get Lee Sang-yoon out of there too, but maybe his office has an invisible force field that activates if he ever tries to leave it.

Mystery Queen: This week’s mystery kind of veered into absurd territory, but the emotional payoff we got in exchange was worth it. It was pretty gratifying to see Kwon Sang-woo in a position where he needed Ajumma’s help, after the hard time he’s given her in every possible moment up until now. There was satisfying karmic reversal and even a big hero moment, though you gotta love how Ajumma was all, “I would’ve saved myself!”

Crime Scene 3: I’m so excited for a whole new season of murder mysteries to solve. I’m happy to say that the third season is off to a solid start with the new cast members, though I did think to myself at one point, “I miss Hong Jin-ho’s flailing.” Everyone seemed too calm for murder suspects, and I miss having someone on the cast who trips over his words and gets animatedly anxious about the whole thing.

Currently recapping: Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People

Whisper: Oh man. Oh man. Chickachunga has been raving about this drama for AGES. So I decided to give it a try, and it completely took over my life (for the last two days). Lee Bo-young is love, and my Monday-Tuesday life is officially over until this drama is over. LOL, thanks chickachunga.

Man to Man: Hmmm, maybe my expectations were too high again, but I will hold off judgment until a few weeks in.

This show is a gem!

I didn't even noticed LDH in Reply 1988. Honestly, I have never been interested in him because he looks the same in every drama. However, I think he fits the role in Radiant Office to the tee ?
I am now curious if he will do and look different in his next drama.

I want another season! So far, there has been nothing fillerish and the show could do with more episodes. I badly want to see Ho Won and Woo Jin's romance in full bloom, I am sure they will make a very cute couple. I also want to see more of the trio's journey.

Haha...I think they are both adorable but I can't see them together. Although Kkot Bi's screen time is little, I enjoyed all her scenes. She's a great PA. I am having fun with Kang Ho's alter ego in Strong Family. I just find him and Miss Ahn so cute.

About Ho Won and Woo Jin, I agree that the show will be great even without the romance but I haven't seen such a satisfying slow burn romance like this one. I just want my cake and eat it too thus the desire for swoony/cute/funny moments.

7

I'm shipping them so hard since the day he took care of her little daughter! Hoya is one of those idols who is really good in acting, I'm loving him too!

Watched man to man-
So so disappointed. I love PHJ but honestly I'm really not feeling how he is portraying his character. For me he is the weakest link of the show. Liking both the 'star actor' and the awesome YJH as the villain

Liar and his lover -
what a cute little show. And why do i keep seeing park bo gum here :) ... Not feeling Joy so much but the rest of the cast is gooooood

Mystery queen

Woah! I feel as though PHJ is doing great. His character is so fascinating and calculating. After hearing such an emotional speech from a drunk Do Ha he just goes "I can use that." I can't wait for him to start actually caring about everyone - it's going to be great.

PHJ also has comedy chops, what with all his "wtf" faces at PSW. I'm hoping you stick with the show just to see where it goes!

I know. It seems to be just me bec everyone else is loving PHJ. I have seen other actors do deadpan better. Hell PHJ has done it better before. But he is just not selling me that he is the super spy. I don't find him mysterious or engaging enough to be hooked. Nor I'm finding his comic timing all that great. I was so so so excited for this show... I haven't checked out this week's episode so maybe I'll see ep 3-4 before giving up on it

PHJ in this drama is a cold type and he is supposed not to display his emotions, and while doing so, there are some funny scenes unintentionally on his part i. e the 'wff' faces. I dont think this is his best role so far, since I had seen him in better roles before. But imo he is nailing his role in this drama so far.

Of course everyone has there own preferences...but I really think PHJ is killing it. This is my favorite roll from him (okay...except for Bad Guys) so far. I havent seen CIIT yet and this is the first PHJ drama Ive watched, he's very veryyy good looking for me and he nails it as an undercover bodyguard for me. However I cant care less for his mission and his interactions with the main female character. Im only watching for the bromance onscreen.

1

No. That's not an excuse. Playing this kind of character is hard. I can name several actor who are acting wearing the mask, cold but there is something hidden behind those cold exterior, and I don't see that in his acting. All I see is someone who are not connect to his own character. As much as I critics his acting in CITT. He is handled Yoo Jung character much better.

Required fields are marked *

I read the manhwa for CITT before watching (and I watch man to man first) and on first few episode only. What's wrong with his delivery at CITT? I think he really portrays Yoo Jung really well so could you elaborate further? (I read the manhwa so dont worry about spoiler!)

I think his portrayal for man to man is meant to be stiff but with subtle emotions but he did not express that well (not bad but could be much more better) (yoon hyun min is a good example of how to be stiff but still portray nuance in his character).

Btw YJH is having time of his life as a villain lol.

1

He was really good at potraying emotional conflict of Yo Jung and the dark side of him. But there at times he is appear so stiff and bland. Well since at that time I'm rewatching Nice Guy and I start to being nitpicky because I watched SJK performances. It's so unfair I judge him so harshly. Well overall i love his potrayal of Yoo Jung much better than he is now as Seol Woo.

1

Yes! I didn't realize PHJ can be so expressive, having not watched his dramas before. I just love watching his "wtf" faces at PSW's dramatic actions or expressions, as if he is going, "what? what are you doing?". It's comedy gold.

I'm really liking PHJ as well, he's got the super-agent bit down solid and the sudden foray into ACK-TING! was great. And I love the little comedic asides he has with his handler. What's not gelling for me is the idea that a super-spy would be starting to fall for a baby-talking thirty year old saesang.

I don't know if those are acting choices, scripted instructions or directorial choices, but nooooo. Falling in love with Cha Manager within the first couple of episodes feels like a complete misstep.

I dont think he is in love with her. He is using her as he used the girl in the case before. He is a flirt as well so i think it fits his character to let her know she looks pretty. And i think it was pretty clear the she became his fan( or fell in love with the star) when they met at the roof top. As for butting in his love life i think as a manager she tries to protect him from scandal.

Required fields are marked *

Exactly, I don't think he's falling for her, not yet! He's interested in her (not romantically) because of how she is, she's a puzzle to him and he's just trying to figure her out. I think this was clear in episode 3 when she was drunk and fell asleep, if he liked her he would've given her more than just sympathy looks!!

3
1

Required fields are marked *

Yes, episode 3 made it very clear he has no feelings for her at all. He's using her, like he's using everyone else to get what he wants.

3

I really don't like the Cha character, so that's maybe coloring my read of the scenes, but I do definitely get some sort of track-laying for K to be interested in Cha in a way that goes beyond his job. And it doesn't feel natural to me, which (combined with disliking the Cha character generally) is actually turning me off the show.

Which sucks, because I really like PHJ and the rest of the story!

Required fields are marked *

Nah, he's definitely not into her. Agree with YY that E3 showed that very clearly. He's only interested in one thing, and that's to get his job done. However, I do feel that something about her intrigues him and almost disturbs him. He's not falling for her, but she unsettles him. (But yes, PHJ does that super agent role so well).

E3 gave me a lot of insights as to why DH and WK behave the way they do. I really liked it.

I agree with girlfriday about the Man to Man genre mixup. I actually like a lot of things about this show but for some reason I can't get hooked. I think a large part of it is the female lead. Kim Min Jung is a good actress but I dont think she suits her role in this drama so far. When she is acting cute with her Oppa, I cringed. But in other dept, she is good. Especially when she told the story about how she met her Oppa etc. I would prefer if she is someone with cool personality, with no cutesy. Only some actressess can nail this role, but not Kim Min Jung. She is also receiving a lot of hate comments, especially with epi 3's rating is decreased and some fans blaming her, which I definitely disagree with.

Eh, I actually like the actress. I understand the reasons behind her suspicion of SW in the first place and why she was so fixated on him in the beginning. I also like the fact that she said sorry and acknowledged her mistakes when she knew she misunderstood him. I don't agree with other commenters that she's not competent at her job or inept or idiotic. IMHO if I were in her shoes, I would be suspicious of SW too, what with all those pickpocketing, secretive photographing and even flirting with her oppa's ex. We know he's not actually flirting with the other actress just because we are the audience and has complete view of the picture. It's not the case for her. Her view is biased by her initial suspicion. To be honest, if someone I have seen pickpocket my colleague, candidly take photos of me and my close friend and flirt with my friend's ex, I would naturally grow wary of that person as well. Simply because I did so with my friend's interest and safety at heart. I believed she did the same with her oppa's fame, safety and interest also at heart. If that doesn't make her a good manager, I don't know what else will.

It's not the actress, it's the character..I think the actress is actually doing a great job portraying Do Ha. I just find her super annoying when she's with Woon Gwang. Maybe it's just because I dont like super over the top fangirling? haha im not really sure. I think it's more the lack of chemistry that I feel between her and Park Hae Jin, granted it's really early so I hope that develops more.

3

@beccabeanie
Ah sorry, I was scatterbrained. I actually like both the actress and the character.
I often swoon and fangirl hard at actors I like so I can overlook her fangirling, haha, but maybe that's just me.

0

Yes, yes, yes! Exactly the points I mentioned in E2's recap, so I agree with you 100%. She has had every single reason to be wary of/dislike SW. She's a manager for a famous star, and she does it well, so honestly I can't see what people don't like about her character. I don't think she's dumb and not a good match for SW. I think the two of them just have a very different approach to life, which is completely natural because of the way they've had to live their lives. (Oops is it a spoiler? I honestly loved her when she apologized. That was the defining moment when I decided I loved her.)

I'm not going to describe it as "hate", but sometimes you meet someone and quickly realize that you and this person are not destined to get along. Their behaviors irritate you, their personality is not one you want to spend time with, and they're getting on your nerves.

That's what I'm feeling here. I'm not sure if it's the character or the actor, but this is like going to a party where you like most of the people and the event but there's one person there who is prominent and they just irritate the heck out of you and you decide to leave earlier than you were planning because of it. No hatred, just "you are too irritating to be around, I don't like how you impact the people around you, and I would be having a more enjoyable time somewhere else where you aren't."

If you've ever been at a dinner party where one person has a particularly overbearing spouse, same thing. You don't hate anyone, you just don't want to spend the next hour like this. So you leave, or in dramaland terms, turn off the TV.

Yea, when I first saw her character on screen, I didn't really like her. Her hairstyle and behavior... it just irritates me. But I will continue watching. Maybe there will be surprises in store for me as the show progresses.

One of the things that bothers me about Kim Min Jung's character is that she feels like an idiot. Very possibly good at her particular job, which appears to be total obsession with her Oppa, but it makes it no fun in a spy drama.

If PJH is a superagent skilled in outwitting and deceiving people, I at least want the girl in the equation to have a fighting chance. Like in "Healer", which had its flaws but at least had a female lead who was doggedly chasing hunches that made sense. But in Man to Man, it just feels like a total mismatch.
I mean, even when she figured out that K was acting shadily, it really was all seen through her saesang lens, like any ability she has is completely grounded in her obsession and really isn't more capable than getting people away from her Oppa. It's territorial more than intelligence.
I really can't describe enough how this character, setup and actress all combine to rub me the wrong way. I usually don't have issues with actresses (well, other than the Suzy-idol problem) so I assume others are feeling the same weirdness about this show.

Watch 3 and 4, some of the issues you have no longer apply. They smoothed out those edges and she truly is competent at her job. I'd say give it a chance and see if you still can't connect to her. If you can't there's no harm, different people and different perspective. There are plenty of shows I've watched that nobody or majority didn't like and plenty that other's did like.

I did watch 3 and 4, before I posted. The issues still apply, and at no point have I stated that it's down to the actress - could be writing or direction too. But just as there's no harm in other people liking the show and stating it, there's no particular harm in me noting that I don't connect with that particular character.

0

You described well how i feel about the character, she annoys me too despite her saseang character had cooled down a bit in episode 3 but what's done is done the first 2 episodes had a great impact that made me annoyed whenever she's on screen I think i will dropbthe show. this is not hate towards the actress is just the character was written badly and so many on many forums are sharing the same thoughts, so it's not we are being hateful.

I think it's her overall personality that's distancing her character with the audience. It's seriously a negative for me. She is loud, brash, rude and everything I don't like in a person. It's not just the cutesy she acts with her oppa. I can stand that. She is after all a fan first, then a manager.

I think it's better to marathon Whisper than following it every week, because you won't have too much time to notice the plot holes and the other stuffs that feel unrealistic which somehow are getting too obvious. I really like its pace and its addictive story, but I was disappointed by the last week's episode because I could smell a lazy and sloppy writing. I am still hanging there only to see how they handle the bad guys.

-Tunnel: It may not be the twistier thriller-mystery out there, but this writer certainly has great sense of timing for every revelation. The question isn't what going to be revealed. It's always about how they are going to reveal it and how each character will react to that.

-Chicago Typewriter: Yoo, what a charmer!! (Waiting for another odd bromance to blossom beautifully. *finger crossed*) And I'm officially in love with Seol.

-Movie Goodbye Single: Both Kim Hyun-soo and Kim Hye-soo made me ugly-cry. That teen actress is so good. I already miss her in dramaland. Is there any chance for her to act in the upcoming School series?

I love the reveals at the end of some episodes of Tunnel because the momentum and emotional buildup throughout the episode. However, the revelation of the second killer was a flat for me. I didn't feel the "aha!!" moment when they showed the face of the second killer. I don't know why. Maybe because Dr Mok himself has been dropping so many hints about the possible existence of a second killer that when it was revealed to be him, it didn't put a punch at the end.

I watched tunnel till ep 5... Then i quit... My main problem was that i didn't really see any chemistry in the trio..

Forget about being a great team, they antagonism towards each other felt superficial and forced... Chemistry in terms of 'i cant wait to see their scenes together'. .. I didn't find that... The whole lot felt flat

Does it get better?

But seriously, I had something in my eye at the coda to episode 26, with the flashback to Gil-dong's anonymous peasant rescuer getting the famous 'I did it because I wanted to' thumbs-up from Gil-dong /cries

oh, and three cheers for Gil-hyun finally returning to the fold! That was almost the Joseon version of Fred and George's departure from Hogwarts in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, I still haven't recovered from how badass it was.

Tunnel: I can't wait to see how the fact that Jae-yi is his daughter going to change how Kwang-ho treats both her and Sun-jae, it's going to be fun! Saw the preview for episode 11 and I'm so excited!

Chicago Typewriter: finally all caught up! Waiting for episodes 7 and 8 and the recaps so I could join the party!!

Oh, for quality I'm Chicago Typewriter all the way. There's a lot to not-like about MSR, but I'm willing to give them a lot of latitude because in the first episode there was not just one but TWO highlighted moments of sought consent before the big makeout scene. And that goes a long way with me for overall directoral intent - if they care enough to telegraph to the audience that the guy paused for the okay, then I trust they're not going to do anything truly stupid and abusive in the relationship for the rest of the show.

Whisper - I am beginning to feeling a strange disconnect with the leads and their quests in this one. There's a wrongness element of kdrama 'heart' that I feel for the second leads JI and SY. How can love go so wrong? I just want them to get their 'heartfelt' tragic ends.

TLAHL - the last episodes were another suprisingly well written tragegy. Its a rookie cast but I wish maybe it had a stronger star cast to give it the rating numbers the writer deserves.

Secret Romance - So cheesy! but also refreshingly honest and unpretentious. Its like paying homage to my teen romance novel voracious reader self. And yes, it did really help with my English.

My sister and I watched the first episode of Man to Man last night, both very excited about it, and were both so disappointed :/ Park Hae Jin is great, but to me there's something off about the way the other two leads are written. They both seem a bit over the top and silly, but without any depth to ground them. I thought Kim Min Jung was playing a purely-for-laughs side character at first. And as for these wood carvings - I don't care! Give me some real stakes to hook me in please, even if it is mostly fluff.

Otherwise I have been loving Chicago Typewriter. I enjoy the way the mystery of what the hell is actually going on here is being teased out. I find myself playing detective between episodes, which I love in a drama. And the three leads have a crackling chemistry between them. There's something so warm yet melancholy there.

Still supporting TVN this week!
Been busy preparing stuff for Kim Yoo Jung because she has a fan meet coming up and some of us wanted to send her a message of support! Also restarted Korean lessons again, except this time there are spelling tests! O_o. So haven't had time to watch anything new, and for once I don't mind the fact that I have an extra day to breathe before the Chicago Typewriter episodes are out.

I'm loving Liar and his Lover and I'm happy to see Javabeans also has alot to say about it, because I do too! Show is full of feels and happy music and puppies (of the human variety) I want to cuddle and pat and protect from the world. Plus the antagonists are true to life shades of grey, so I can't help but feel sorry for them, even though I'm gnashing teeth at the same time.

And it doesnt matter if you don't agree with me, because we can all like different things. I don't only have to like epically shot dramas like Goblin or intellectually stimulating ones like Chicago Typewriter. Sometimes I just want my dramas simple and heartwarming, like my grandma's home cooked meal. Michelin Star food it ain't, but it always makes me happy inside and smile :)

I think the police work is the weakest link in MQ too. However, WS being used to big cases such as drug trafficking, can't get used to a downgrade, going after petty crimes like underwear thieves. The methods for sniffing out petty criminals is different from those big ones. As for Chief Hong, he is the bumbling police sidekick to SO's sleuthing skills. I just wish he is smarter since he is a chief to complement SO's skills as a detective. It would be nice if the characters are all smart.

Also, I discovered a suprising thing today. So, I decided to watch my girlfriend is a gumiho today. And I found that girlfriday's avatar is the animated version of gumiho! I have always thought that her avatar is cute (what with the tongue out and the concentrated look) and I felt a little stupid for not knowing that all this while. So, that aside, I am enjoying the show but I find myself wanting to fast forward through the aunt and action school director's scenes. I am also reading the recaps to understand all the double meanings in the dialogues. ;)

Completed misaeng and my favourite part from the final episode is when dong shik came into chief oh's new company and was all like "jan geu rae, I am here. So, take down that recruitment board" and the group hug afterward. Sales team 3 is ♥.

Also watching secret romance, after episode 4 I feel like I am warming upto it or just got used to all the characters. But sometimes, I feel like sung hoon is slightly overacting.

Have not been commenting here these days due to busy work life. Rather in a drama slump lately too that I've dropped Whisper (can't stand all the too-many-baddies, lead guy and all the consistent betrayals). I've dropped Mystery Queen too. I know many beanies here love it but it made me actually dozing off while lead gal went on her sleuthing stuff and the detectives here are all so dumb that I'm couldn't stand it. I don't find it funny too. So the only shows I'm watching now are :

(1) Tunnel - my topmost loved drama right now! I love crime drama like this. I know that this drama is very predictable as the writer keep on throwing obvious hints onto our faces but when the secrets are revealed ! Wow ! I love the intensity and how our lead guy acts (Kwang Ho). He delivers emotional scene really well !! I can't wait to see what happens after he realised that JY, the rude and so-called coldhearted criminology professor is his daughter !! And his bromance with SJ is growing so well too. I wonder how will he react if he knows that SJ might become his son-in-law sooner or later !! Haha !!

(2) Radiant Office - I know this show is kinda low rating and the office isn't as radiant as the title stated but I love our lead couple's principle and courage for standing up to what's wrong with that organisation and their higher up bosses! I know that our OTP's romance is slow growing and subtle but I love the little simple ways they cared for each other !!! Not forgetting our trio's touching friendship too!! Which is really rare in an office like this (even when competing for the place of the full-time position, they still maintained their kind hearts towards one another and root for one another too !!!)

Yes! I love the intensity with which KH acts too. SJ, on the other hand, seems more like the cool aloof type which complements his acting style very much. And SS?! The wise mature maknae who is always so respectful of his sunbae. Ah, sweet friendship goals!

For some reason, i have been on a Joo Won watching spree this week, started with Gaksital and ended with Cantabile Tomorrow. He is soo good in both that I can't wait for My Sassy Girl now.

Also watching The Producers, dunno why I skipped watching it last time but this one is also a gem for me even though this was not that successful as a mockumentary.

On top of that, I still had the time to watch the latest eps of perfect wife and tunnel. I guess this happens if u get laid off and finally had the luxury of time after 8 years of working. More kdrama time before finding another job!

I actually had no expectations with her acting in Producers after seeing scarlet first but she did surprise me in a good way. Just remembering the ending on Scarlet just makes me soo sooo mad at how horrible and lazy it was written.

I didn't think Producers require much acting on IU's part, unlike Moon Lovers. Her acting, thus, is more serviceable in that show as compared to Moon Lovers, which is more dramatic and requires much more than acting like a deer in the headlights.

Gaksital was my first Joo Won drama. I was so enamored by him at the time that I watched 1 Night 2 Days for him. I know actors are not like the characters they portray but I was still shocked seeing the contrast between Kang-to and the real him. Especially since I watched 1N2D soon after I started Gaksital. The bromance might be one of the most heartbreaking for me. I cried so much but it was a good kind of cry. Anyways, at least we got the fanservice at the end of Good Doctor. Park Woong-ki. ?

There's nothing like oral surgery to keep you confined to bed and open up your schedule for drama watching. I'm living on ibuprofen, I've had no food but what can be stuck in a blender, and I'm halfway through Liar Game. Can I get my wisdom teeth out every weekend?

Liar and His Lover: It's usually common for me to start pulling away from a drama around this point, when there's only a few weeks left. It's generally a way to protect myself against the ending, but LaHL has impressively kept me there completely, and I'm totally invested in how Show will pull us out of this one. Please let everybody be happy in the end!

Mystery Queen: Episode 7 was surprisingly whiny for me, I thought it dragged out the "agasshi is missing" plot way too long... But episode 8 more than made up for it, and I loved the way it resolved itself. Probably the easiest capture of a terrifying serial killer I've ever seen in a kdrama, and totally in line with the show's quirky tone. ^^ Loved it!

Man to Man: I think my new favorite thing is Park Hae Jin in a falsetto. I love the setup, and the politics are slooowly making themselves more interesting.

Chicago Typewriter: So I started this with my dongsaeng, but then they were gone all day and my jaw hurt... so now I'm on episode 7, and thinking heh, this is a pretty good show. I still wish his hair was longer, though.

Tunnel: I'm awaiting today's episode anxiously. Last week's reveal (which we already knew, but now they know) left me on pins and needles. Please please please work out in the end (I still kinda want him to go back to the past, catch the guy there, keep Yeon-Sook from dying and then live happily ever after).

General and I: (Chinese) I'm halfway through the last episode. I don't want to end it because that means I won't get to see more of my OTP, and I'll have to start looking around for a new Chinese show to practice with. Suggestions?

Liar Game: (Korean) I've long heard lots of really good things about this drama, and it's kinda mostly living up to its reputation. I think I still like Shin Sung-Rok in MLFAS better, though. I'm on episode 5, and I think I want to watch the Japanese show after I'm done, see how they compare.

...Yeah, being bed-bound is an adventure. And I haven't even watched anything yet today!

That's for forward time travel.

I watched the Korean version of Liar Game first before watching the Japanese version (2 seasons and 1 movie. I ignored the last movie because it didn't have the female lead in it and two other side movies because it didn't have the male lead in them).

To be honest, I like the Korean version better. There is more depth into the plot by having some focus on the characters. On the other hand, the Japanese version is more focused on the games. The season 1 of the Japanese version is very short for each episode is only 30min long so the plot moves fast and packs with excitement. However, the second season extends the episode to 45min and the first 4 episodes of the drama are spent on ONE game. It becomes slightly draggy because I'm binge watching. I think it will be better if you don't binge watch the second season. Although that being said, I enjoy the second last game and the last game (which is similar to a game in the first season while the Korean version combines both games into one game). The 'antagonist' in these two games is amazing. The movie is acceptable... And I actually played a similar game in real life as an economic experiment with cash payment.

Okay, back to why I did I appreciate the Korean version more. I feel that each character in the drama is unique and I like the gangster creditor way too much HAHA. Shin Sung Rok is amazing as an antagonist and he feels scary. Lee Sang Yoon is cute beyond words HAHA. And most importantly, Lee Sang Yoon has a super strong opponent who he can lose to. The Japanese version, on the other hand, has a male lead who almost never loses. Realistically speaking, the Japanese characters may not exist in real life because they MAYBE too 'extreme'. It really depends on how your preference. I prefer the chemistry of the characters in the Japanese version because I can see the gradual development of their friendship (romance?) over the drama and how they change each other.

The cinematography in the Korean version is much better because the Japanese version had a low budget being a late night drama. The colour tones in the Japanese version are... slightly too 'colourful' for me.

Really? Was Episode 7 of MQ dragged out for too long? On the other hand, I quite enjoyed the episode because of the refreshing manner the writer told the story. I was going to stay mum and just read through this post, but Javabeans' excitement about Liar must have been infectious, here I am.

My husband and I are currently watching Chicago, Liar, Whisper and Man to Man.

We both agree on Liar (wonderful thoughtful little show which keeps getting better and better - a surprising gem), Chicago (everything is coming together this week and we're finally committed for the full ride - intricate and interesting ambiance) but disagree on Whisper and Man to Man.

I personally am enjoying Man to Man and laughing out loud watching it but my husband doesn't like it and think it lacks cohesion. On the other hand, he enjoys watching Whisper, which makes my blood boil and my eyes roll at almost every turn.

And that's it for this week.

For Tunnel, we both agreed waiting for the next episode might be too masochistic so we're agreed on marathoning it.

This week, out of my current batch of kdramas - Tunnel, Rebel, Super Family and Radiant Office, I'm most happy with RO. I am expecting it to end strong and the show earns a spot right up there among my all time favorites.

Tunnel and Rebel had their very good and not so good moments. I just hope they will get better as they enter the final lap.

For Tunnel, I hope the drama gives a credible story behind the serial killings. The revelation of Dr Mok as the killer really took some shine off the show for me. Jae Yi's reckless act was so unnecessary, even it was what led Kwang Ho to discover his daughter.

For Rebel, is it bad that I don't really care if Gil Hong dies? I don't know why it came to this. I am more worried about how Ga Ryung will live if Gil Dong dies and I shouldn't be going by the 1st episode.

Radiant Office: I get people want more romance, but I like the slow burn of the romance as actually being realistic to what office romances are like. I'll miss this drama.

Perfect Wife: I'm behind and will catch up this weekend.

Tunnel: I like but don't love it. An enjoyable watch but it's one of those dramas where the viewer is figuring things out before the detectives.

Queen of Mystery: No, lady, you were totally gonna die. I get they have this bickering thing going on, but it kind of bugged me that she wouldn't even fess up to this. I think this is an ok drama so far. I do not like the Chaebol son stuff...I mean kidnapping your adult kid is a little too BOFs for me.

I almost did not watch Healer. Somehow, I was expecting a daebak action hero and when I caught the first episode, I found that aspect very lacking. I dropped it and went back, got through the first few episodes and when the romance started to bud, it became a lot more entertaining. I think the romance part was deserving of the hype but not the entire show.

I agree that romance was its strongest factor, but I definitely think it had a better handle on its story than both those dramas. Hehehe, personally, my favorite part was Kim Mi-kyung. I could watch the drama 5 times just for her.

1

My comment got accidentally deleted. Healer is first rate action-comedy mixed genre for the first half and early into the second half. You have two extremely cliche free lead pair but it all goes horribly wrong somehow in the end. While avoiding cliche, somehow the show lost its steam and direction of plot device and that's where I had dropped it. Watch it for Ji Chang Wook and his charisma, also Park Min Young's charm.

Well, just to make myself clear so I don't offent Healer's fans. I found the show to be entertaining and to me the best part is the chemistry between the leads. Though I like the show very much it's still a bit far from being perfect as to my own standard.

+ The Liar and His Lover: Out of all the dramas I'm currently watching, this is the least ambitious project. It is also the most effective at playing with my emotions. I can 100% relate to javabeans' description of it. One minute I'm overwhelmed by the great romance, another I feel complicated emotions for all the flawed characters. It is not cracktastic in the usual way, but I keep looking forward to it and wanting to come back to it. It's just leveled perfectly right for my feels. Lots of hurt, lots of heart, and engaging characters in spades. It surprises me every week by how much more I love it. My favorite drama this year, no question. It has both quality and heart.

+ Chicago Typewriter: It took me two weeks to fall in love with this show, but boy did I. Yoo is my new little favorite thing, and Seol is just so bizarrely interesting. Once the discovery of the ghost story kicked in, every part of the drama just feels more alive and interesting. What I love the most about this though, is the little hint of humor sprinkled in here and there.

+ Man to Man: I knew from the trailers this would be a bit crazy, I didn't know how much I would laugh watching it. I wished it was more tightly written, but the two boys make up for it. Park Hae Jin is my crush. I wish for a better female lead for him. I don't care if she gets a personality transplant for once.

+Tunnel: Every time I think about dropping this show, it gives me something to come back to. Out of all the dramas, it is best at maintaining the the right amount of suspense and mystery, with enough thrills I don't get bored.

+ Mystery Queen: It's cute and fun, and I love the premise of the homey wife who is more genius than everybody else. I wished the pace could be a wee bit more gripping.

+ Radiant Office: This show is the second best after The Liar and His Lover at tugging at my feels. I'm not as emotionally engaged and gripped watching this as I would have liked, but the fondness I have cultivated for all the characters still remains. Go Ah Sung makes the drama for me. She is just so painfully me at times.

+ Others: Because of I've been craving for the next episode of Liar and Lover, I have been rewatching Dream High, You're Beautiful and Nodame Cantabile (Japanese) simultaneously to ease the craving a bit. Dream High was not as good as I remember, but Kim Soo Hyun being the exception. Song Sam Dong is the original male Sorim. I fast-forward You're beautiful a lot, but make up for it by replaying the funny scenes over and over again. Jang Geun Suk's smile is everything. Nodame Cantabile is still the best music drama out there for me because of how light it is. It takes about a minute to get back into the spazzy vibe every time, but once I get used to it, I love it so much.

To add on, you have a very very very very good looking male lead that is OOZING WITH CHARISMA every single time he appears (with a super nice voice too). The female lead (Ueno Juri) managed to bring out the weirdness of Nodame in an endearing manner. She's weird but she's not crazy. She has her own personality.

It took me around two episodes to get used to the exaggerated acting but once you get used to it, YOU WILL FALL IN LOVE WITH THE DRAMA. I have recently watched it so I'm still in the madly in love stage. And the fashion sense is not outdated despite it being a drama from 10 years ago.

PS: China is remaking Nodame Cantabile. 60 episodes. No idea how the scriptwriter is gonna fit an 11 episode drama (even with the SP and movies, it will be at most 18 episodes) into 60 episodes.

No matter how long ago you've watched it, it's still an excellent series. The sequels, specials, and multiple movies it spawned didn't abate in quality either. In my top 10, perhaps top 5 Japanese dramas of all time. It is the only romance-drama besides Pride in my list.

23

Curious to see the C version of Nodame.
China is also doing Shinya Shokudo (Midnight Diner). I hope both of those will be subbed.
Nodame = ❤️ , plus it has a wonderful sound track.

6

Is Nodame Cantabile that good? I have heard that it was good before. I watched Cantabile tomorrow starring Joo Won and I just felt it was okayish. Hmm.. despite the exaggerated acting which I should foresee, I think I should try watching NC once.

7

@johnb couldn't reply you under your comment so I will just reply here. I'm actually worried about the C-version of Nodame Cantabile because its going to be a 60 episode drama and there's no way to expand the plot to 60 episodes without including 'A loves B, B loves C, C loves A' plot line, unhappy mother-in-law, misunderstandings between couples etc. These additional plot lines are just going to drag the plot and deviate from the message of the drama which is how Chiaki and Nodame change and improve due to each other's influence.

I think the cast will matter a lot too. Nodame is not an easy character to act. We had witnessed how much trouble the Korean producers went through to cast a suitable actress for Nodame, and even Shin Eun Kyung received criticisms for the first few episodes for being overly crazy. Ueno Juri's Nodame is special because she is not simply crazy, she is a genius, and she is stubborn and hot tempered as well. To bring out such nuances without making the audience feel awkward or too exaggerated is a difficult task for the actress. Ueno Juri really did a great job in making Nodame so endearing.

To me, Chiaki senpai will always be Tamaki Hiroshi dressed in a white shirt and laid on the bench with his eyes closed. :)

FYI: The C-version of Operation Proposal is airing right now starring Exo Lay.

@mmmmm have you watched any J-dramas before? If you haven't, you must take note that the Japanese version has a lot of exaggerated scenes that seem slightly over the top. Although that being said, Nodame Cantabile is so well loved till now is because the plot is heartwarming, cute and funny. If you have any musical background, you will like it even more. I stopped playing the piano about 6 years ago and when I watched the drama, I regretted so much about not learning it anymore.

PS: The male lead is simply far too good looking with a very comforting voice in the drama. I think you can watch it for his face HAHAHA.

@starswillshine

Thank you for the recommendation and clarification. I kinda know before that Jap acting is quite exaggerated. Seems like many people like this show. I have some background knowledge about piano but I stopped playing it many years ago. :)

All those youth/music dramas you listed are close and dear to my heart. I put them in the same category as Weightlifting, SKL, Sassy Go Go, Answer Me series, because all of those dramas have a knack at making me feel the giddiness and pain of youth once again.

If all goes well, Liar and Lover is set to surpass Dream High and You're Beautiful in my heart and join the legendary rank of WFKBJ. Honestly, it already has, as long as it doesn't botch the ending up.

Funny u mentioned Dream High: Kim Soo Hyun made the rare instagram post promoting Liar and Lover for his Secretly Greatly buddy. His low-profile friendship with Lee Hyun Woo is the greatest stuff ever.

Out of all the dramas I'm currently watching, this is the least ambitious project. It is also the most effective at playing with my emotions.

for me, this drama is proof that you can be just ordinary, without any convoluted or complex plot, and still give the audience substance by focusing on making the best of the "ordinary" you have. the drama's strong point, is its wise decision to invest all of its energy, not on crafting a complicated plot, but complex characters. the result is that all of the characters feel real, which in turn makes their "ordinary" conflict feel very real for the audience. by building its focus on the characterization, and consistent characterization, and by integrating music into those characters, this drama has built a small little world that feels very real and engaging and where you would want to stay. Music and puppies. What else can you ask for?

Not just characterization, mind you. The reason TLAHL is so engaging is because it's great at creating organic relationships between all characters, minor and major, so no matter what scene you're in, no matter who is missing or who is there, you're still invested.

Yeah this drama is ordinary. Nothing revolutionary or extraordinary. But it's a thoughtfully well-written kind of ordinary, which makes it the best kind of ordinary.

I like how @zukin put it in the recap

Look, this is a "fluffy" show in that it makes us feel all sorts of "fluffy" feelings. But the wording of "fluff" is deceptive because the drama provides a lot more substance than "fluff" would imply. In terms of substance, especially character building, it's rock solid.

exactly how I feel about the small engaging little world. It's a product of cohesive storytelling, balanced characters and makes the drama world feel complete.

I'm very selective about the dramas I love and this one may become another Healer or Queen In Hyun for me, if only the four episodes left can deliver of course. a lot can happen in four episodes but I'm rooting for it.

Why do you think The Liar and His lover is not ambitious project? Well, they cast several new actor, But they got Kim Jin Min at the helm!

I think I know what you mean. It's barely possible to spoil this drama, the drama isn't about fancy plot points. We all know what's going to happen. It's about how the characters will resolve their emotional blocks through forming new relationships and resolving old wounds.

I usually never comment on 'What we are watching' and instead just silently take notes on what shows to watch or keep in my To-Watch list. But Javabeans' overflow of love for Liar and his Lover which turned a short comment into an almost mini essay made me want to comment! JB basically said what we have been saying in the 500+ comments in the recaps... This show is all kinds of wonderful ??

Also watching Chicago Typewriter- it's fun, interesting and gives me serious library goals!

I have also been spending way too much time going through old random Weekly Idol episodes and some Knowing Brothers episodes. Basically I am on a Heechul spree ?

I checked out Radiant office and loved it but I will marathon it after it finishes it's run.. Haven't checked out Man x man or Tunnel but I will watch both of them once they too get over.

And secret romance- neither awesome nor bad... something that I can watch without getting too invested in the story..

Knowing Brothers is a strange mixture of funny and plain old weird. I think it is a particular brand of humour that I just don't understand.. But there are just that many laugh-out-loud moments too! I am currently watching the one when Ji Soo guested and it is hilarious!

Agree! Lee soo geun, kim hee chul are gems in that show. Not to mention the other like min kyung hoon and seo jang hun. The combination of all the cast are weird but it's good in the same time. Haha ?
But honestly, the old episodes are better than nowadays episodes. The old one was more....savage ?

What I am watching: Chicago Typewriter.

It's been a long while since I didn't get something I truly truly like from Kdrama world. Then came this lovely thing called Chicago Typewriter. The production is beautiful and it's just right for the moment. I guess I was beginning to get tired of those twists and turns plots so I am opting for something more beautiful, relaxed and refreshing. Then, again, came Chicago Typewriter.

Though I do want to get that Goblin ring the beanie staff here are giving out, I don't think I can being to learn and to be able to make memes in time *sad face*. This week has been somewhat hectic I couldn't find anytime to do that *exclaiming 'but you're reading and trying to comment everything about Chicago Typewriter!'* lol

I love Chicago Typewriter too. I'm enjoying others on a more bubblegum level (Secret Romance, Liar) but Chicago Typewriter is the one that makes me purr in contentment. I think the last one to hook me on ideas was W, and before that probably Kill Me Heal Me - so this was good timing.

Can't wait to see more of the 1930s!

Man to Man: This drama is a healing drama for my chronic illness named Cheese on The Trap and I'm Park Hae-jin's trash LMAO

Father Is Strange: Waiting for ages *sigh* a love-lines for Lee Joon & Jung So-min.

Chicago Typewriter: Yoo Ah-in is so illegal! I can forgive those Han Se-Joo's bad attitudes and this is not right lololol

Queen of Mystery: A little bit draggy but the ahjumma and Mr hottie policeman gave me a lot laugh.

Radiant Office: I'm second lead crush~ Don't care about ending coz I can stare at him all day long. His smile is addicting... Awww~~~

Tunnel: It's worthy... worthy... worthy drama. Less noisy marketing but good quality and person who cast Choi Jin-Hyuk & Yoon Hyun-Min for the roles deserved awards.

Whisper: Heavy plots but I still follow this drama..

Kim Dong Wook is showing his charm more in this drama. He didnt do a lot of drama, but among his notable role was in The Concubine where he played the obssessed and tormented King and also in Maids. They should cast him to play Yeonsangun next time. He will surely nail it. He and Seo Jun Young are among underrated talented and great actors that need to be given more chances to display their skill.

I'm loving Man to Man which is great because I had high expectations for it that could have easily led to disappointment. However, each episode has built nicely on the previous one. The first episode was overstuffed but still entertaining and managed to concisely set up our hero and the plot. The second introduced us to the hilarious hijinks of our spy out of water amongst the crazy movie types (with added bromance!). Episodes 3&4 still have the action and comedy, but we are starting to flesh out the characters like Do Ha and Woong Kwang more so they feel 3-dimensional and not just entertainingly nuts.

I think to be perfect the show just needs to raise the stakes a little because - yeah - I haven't been riveted by the political/word carvings plot. It hasn't been an issue so far because there is so much good stuff going on but that might not last forever. I also want to see Seol Woo developed because we know so little about him! Don't get me wrong. Park Hae Jin is killing it in the role. I don't think I have been saying that enough because I just assume people realize it, but he is managing to play an ostensibly cold character who is a blank slate in way that is actually quite charming and sympathetic. That's harder than it looks! And his reaction shots are priceless. But I hope we we start digging into his past and story sooner rather than later.

Other than Man to Man, I have been behind on drama viewing because I was traveling so I just got caught up on the first episodes of a few series:

Tunnel - I'm probably not the 1st person to say this reminds me of both Signal and Memories of Murder, but since I love both of those that is not necessarily a bad thing. I'm enjoying the 80s setting and will be sad to leave it, but the 1st episode was good enough that I will continue.

Whisper - I'm not really into melodramas but I was hankering for a more female centric story and I love Lee Bo Young. However, The first ep wasn't extraordinary enough to get over my dislike of melodramas. Dropping.

Chicago Typewriter - This is stylish and I like the 30s period setting. However, the main character is such an ass. I would be the first to argue that characters don't have to be likeable, but I do like to know why I'm being asked to put up with an unlikeable character (such as he will be redeemed or it is being played for laughs). Still this is different enough that I will probably continue (for now).

Everything javabeans said about TLAHL <3
My heart is bruised, but also full from it. I feel pain for the boys, I squeal at Han-gyul stepping it up as the best boyfriend of the year, and every scene with the music is a highlight.

Also watching CT, Tunnel, and RO. All three have their separate charm so I'm enjoying all of them differently. CT feels so new, Tunnel is a good crime drama, and RO has heartwarming people you want to root for.

Chicago Typewriter-
I am still vying for this show and I think it is my favorite so far despite the mixed reactions. Although there were some kinks in the beginning, episode 6 totally brought their three characters together. I am especially excited for the next one as I hope it will delve even more into their past as lovers, comrades, and fighters.
The Liar and the Lover-
This show has made me feel so bad for Chan-Young as he is always the one who wasn't wanted first. The emotional strings are crossing everywhere and the romance line between So-Rim and Han-Gyul has just gotten even better.
Tunnel-
This show has been on the fast track and I loved it. That moment when Kwang Ho finds Jae Yi through the whistle was a favorite since it finally reunited them with the object between lover and mom.
Man to Man-
As for this show, it is still to early for me to tell whether it will be a really good show, so I'm unsure. PHJ has been okay so far but I am curious to see how his character will end up.
Radiant Office-
Since it is ending soon and the all the characters have been lovable thus far, I don't really want to see them leave. I really hope the romance between Ho Won and Woo Jin will be more emphasized at the end.

I just started It's Ok, That's Love today. It's one of many on my to-watch list, and I'm not really sure what to expect but I'm liking it so far! I usually just watch only one or two currently-airing dramas because I'm so impatient waiting for new episodes haha, and then catch up on others in between new shows. After SWDBS ended (and left a King Kong sized hole in my heart!) I've been getting caught up with Perfect Wife. It's not a fav, but I really love some of the characters, especially our herione. The story, though over dramatic at times, is also really interesting. And I'm basically just keeping up with Whisper via recaps, I love LBY but after a long day at work this show is too exhausting for me lol.

I wish I could hear JB's opinion on Choi Jinhyuk (Lee Jungjin) as a character. And I agree, Choi Minsoo is the perfect quirky artistic dad, but I already knew that before I started the drama. I started watching this because of him and LJJ, I was curious why they agreed to be in a youth drama. That may be why I love this drama so much, I started with zero expectations, if not negative expectations.
