Hip-hop youth webtoon Who Knows gets drama adaptation

There’s a new webtoon-to-drama adaptation in the works which fits into a familiar niche as a youth drama about music and romance, but it offers something slightly different: It’s about an awkward teenage boy who becomes a hip-hop musician superstar. Cool. The webtoon by Kim Jae-han is called Who Knows, a slangy phrase that’s used in a lot of different ways, from “what’s there to know” to “who the hell even knows,” and it’s a high school romance that cleverly integrates music as a part of the webtoon-reading experience.

The drama is being planned as a 16-episode pre-produced series, and an early casting offer was made to Yook Sung-jae (The Lonely Shining Goblin) to headline, but his agency almost immediately released a statement that he’d already turned the project down. That’s too bad, though honestly if the drama is about a hip-hop artist, it’s one case where I’d want them to cast someone who’s just as talented a rapper as he is an actor. You guys will probably know better than me—does such a person exist?

The webtoon is about a 19-year-old high school senior named Kim Won-joon, an introspective, overthinking kid who basically keeps to himself and tries to stay invisible from bullies in order to survive at school. He carries a torch for a girl he’s never even met—a senior at a nearby school who’s famous for her uljjang photos online—and he’s a bit of a fanboy about her, thinking himself a mere mortal who could never reach his “goddess.”

One day, his best friend decides to enroll them both in an open audition to be models (the friend hilariously submits Won-joon’s photo and a photo of Kimura Takyua for himself), and Won-joon’s ordinary life drastically changes when he meets his goddess at his audition, and then gets cast as a model. He sort of stumbles into the entertainment world and then discovers a love and talent for music, inspired by the girl he’s in love with.

I’ve only read the beginning of the webtoon, but what I like about it is how awkward the hero is—he’s not cool or suave at all, which is appealing when you know that he’ll somehow transform into a superstar. It’s maybe not as drastic a transformation as the one Kim Soo-hyun underwent in Dream High, but it’s that type of trajectory, where he starts out a bumbling fool who can’t even talk to pretty girls.

The story is set in 2007 to 2010, and the drama plans to use the music specific to that time, and even hopes to get cameos from different hip-hop artists for each episode. Casting is still underway and a broadcaster has yet to pick it up, but Who Knows plans to start shooting in July.

Man... music themed adaptations get to me these days. I love love love The Liar and His Lover, I might love this too. Also, I'm kinda happy Yook Sungjae didn't accept this project. He honestly hasn't officially rested as much after Goblin because he filmed Variety shows left and right, had a Korean comeback and is currently in the middle of a BTOB Japanese comeback. I hope there's a better project for him. I'd love to see him and Joy in one project. I enjoyed watching them in We Got Married.

He's a good rapper actually, and trained as a rapper as a trainee. When Minhyuk, the rapper in Sungjae's group BTOB is busy, Sungjae takes on his rap parts for him. He also rapped in Big Byung's "Stress Come On," and Ojingeo, Bbyu Young Love, etc.

Joy can be Kyoko and Sungjae can be either Sho or Ren from skip beat. I especially think Joy would be perfect playing the bully/model-like Natsu. She pulls off of cold haughty prep-girl really well.

I thought of Kim Min Jae when you said "someone who’s just as talented a rapper as he is an actor" !! He auditioned for SMTM4 and I thought he was a good rapper~~

Excited to see who they'll cast for this drama~ the story sounds really interesting!

I agree KMJ was the first person that came to my mind too. Though I don't know if he'd do back to back projects. Minhyuk from BTOB is also an option. He's a rapper though as an actor, not so much.

What about Ilhoon? He's the other rapper (blonde next to Minhyuk) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFQthiD6xBY
He raps as well, if not better.

He also showed acting potential in music videos and stole the show in the MV for Movie. He looks like Highlight Jun-hyung too.

Oh, I love Ilhoon as a rapper! I think he's the better rapper. I challenge you to listen to his rap in Nightmare on a loop, it's mesmerising. You will not want to stop once you start.

https://www.youtuberepeat.com/watch?v=P07ifUeP4v0

I don't know if he'll have time though. He also has the Japan activities and needs to compose for BTOB. Minhyuk composes too, but not title tracks so he has time for the movie. I don't even know if Ilhoon has interest in acting tbh. Potentially, he might even be better than Sungjae, he fits all kinds of concepts.

4

I love how no one's suggesting Minhyuk. Guess they've all seen this =p
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TgqlaEQnSyc

1

Also, about what you said about stealing the show for Movie MV, he also stole the show in the performance. He stayed in character for Jack Sparrow the whole time with his costume.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4fu4lF_O8k
Who knows, he might be a good physical actor? Too bad I don't know if Cube will let him act. They might just want him to concentrate on composing the next title track since Movie is their most successful one so far.

5

@silverp Hey, I might really love it if Ihoon landed the role. He always is mentioned on lists for best idol rappers on Pann. I used to prefer MH's raps because his voice is more manly and my style. I didn't get the hype about how Ilhoon was so good but the longer I listen to Ilhoon, the more I acknowledge his skills. In this case, his younger voice and young face might fit the role better (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B4JuQ_LdSmM). No idea if anyone else but Beanies considered casting him. Hey, if Junhyung got casted in Monstar, why not Ilhoon.

2

Oh no.
Why would you even give me such beautiful ideas? Now I won't like anyone else in the role.

2

@Didi thank you for the Jack Sparrow clip. I loved how he even walked like Jack Sparrow.

I thought of Kim Min-jae too but he's probably busy with The Best Shot. There's EXO's Chanyeol who is both a rapper and actor but I don't think he's very good in acting.
Either way, if they offered the role to Sungjae, they probably aren't looking for an actual rapper for the role. Still sad he rejected it, was looking forward to seeing him in a leading role.

I hope you're not right on the "not looking for an actual rapper"-part, although it wouldn't be unlikely :( Music dramas always have a hard time engaging me if the actors playing musicians don't actually have any talent in the area... But it might be too hard to find someone who can do both *sigh*

Chanyeol is so precious and I love that boy to death, but his acting isn't that great even though I enjoyed him so much in Missing Nine. If they're going to cast anyone from EXO, I want them to cast Xiumin. He's cute, can sing, can rap, and can act. Frankly, the child needs more exposure.

I actually don't think KYJ is tall enough to pass as a ulzzang model kinda girl. Plus I don't think the lead actress has anything to do except be pretty and be a love interest. Oooh that sounds like something I'll love!

The whole "act and rap" thing has me thinking. So Ji Sub is way too old lol. I think SIG can rap (?), but I don't really think him playing a high school kid again would work...

Maybe Song Seunghyun? He's been in a lot of musicals as well as a movie called The Youth where he did really well for someone new to filming. He also did the webdrama, Investigator Alice 2, which was honestly a hot mess, but that was due to a poor lead actress, bad writing and weird directing. He's tall and he's got a baby face, so could easily play a high school kid. Aaaaandddd he can rap well:

I know plenty of good Korean rappers, but it's probably sparse with ones that can both act and rap!

*racks brain, can only think of idol-rappers*

Kyuhyun can rap okay and has done lots of musicals, but have only seem him in a webdrama that wasn't very good. Plus, doesn't look like a model.

Hongki can rap okay too, but he's not tall enough for the model thing.

Key is the lead rapper for Shinee, but I've never heard him rap and he might not be very convincing with the model thing either, don't think he's tall enough?

Mino from Winner is an excellent rapper and could fit the model plot, but he's got no acting experience except from the group's Heirs parody lol. He did well there, but he's way too green.

Underground rappers (who haven't turned idol) are probably out of the question, I've never heard of any of them turning to acting?

*wishes passionately that they actually hire someone who can rap and not just someone who can act*

Cool, thanks! He's not bad, but he's not really riding the rhythm a whole lot? It's more like talking-rapping with an unrelated beat-track in the background. If he learns to ride it more, I think he'd be pretty good though and he's at least much better than most actors would probably be ha :P

2

Yeah he seems alright! Plus if we look at the whole package, I think he is the one who comes the closest!

And yes SIG can rap, but he won't be available what with the army thing going on, and yeah, even if he magically has time, he is 30 now- too old to play a 19 year old.

0

Yeah, he even looked pretty tall on that RS clip, so he probably does come the closest ^^

Lol I keep forgetting about him and Kyuhyun's enlistments, but yeah, had already discounted him due to age. I guess I don't want them to go lol. I need dramas, music, variety shows from them :P I hope Kyuhyun at least gets to do the new season of NJTTW before going. Anyway, hope that SIG does manage to complete his army training, otherwise he'll probably have to end up doing nothing for two years :O

0

Dude that thought is so scary! 2 years of nothingness, plus the army scandal would turn his career to mush, no matter how brilliant he is!

He has his 2nd check- up tomorrow and I am praying for good results! Never thought I would ever be praying for him to be able to go to army but that's exactly what i am doing now!

3

@obsessedmuch The 2 years of nothingness is what happened to Choi Jinhyuk.

1

I am going to write my comment here because I can't reply to @kaybee down below: Can you tell me what's going on? I don't understand, why would SIG not be able to do anything for 2 years if he can't complete his army training? I thought they can't do anything as long as they are in the army, why would you guys hope that he gets to go? And what kind of army scandal? pls someone tell me

0

@bubbles
I wonder if you will get to read this comment but here is the answer- S. Koreans are really emotional and rigid about the rule of compulsory military enlistment, more so in the case of celebrities. However genuine a case, if a celebrity is unable to go to army because of medical or other reasons, he is considered to be using his "celebrity privileges/ power" and somehow neglecting his duty. Thus, it would be called a scandal.

As @daydee pointed out above- Choi Jin Hyuk came back from his army duty in some months but had to stay away from the limelight till the date his military enlistment would have gotten over. It was only after that that he was able to consider offers etc.

So for a celebrity and their fans, not going to army is worse than going because as long as you go, you can come back a 'hero' or a 'manly man' who has fulfilled his duties to his nation. If not, that image remains for a long time. That's why Jung Il Woo despite his cerebral aneurysm enlisted..

No scandal for SIG right now. He has an injury but he still wants to serve. He is getting tests done and then the future would be decided.

0

@bubbles Basically South Koreans take the mandatory military enlistment VERY seriously as they're technically kind of still at war. Some celebs have previously tried to slip past the enlistment, perhaps due to what it'll due to their careers, which obviously doesn't sit very well with the general public. So now most people don't believe it when an actor or singer has a real, medical excuse not to serve. People like Kim Jongkook who the army wouldn't take due to his bad back, have gotten a lot of nasty comments about it since he's such a physical guy that people don't believe it - even though he's uploaded x-rays of his back. Hence, if you, as a celeb, are told that you can't go, it's best to stay off-radar for the two years you were supposed to serve - that way people won't blame you as much for not going and will be more likely to believe the medical excuse was valid. The reasoning of the public being, that if you can work, you can enlist.
(I'm not Korean, so this is just based on observations and what I've read, news articles etc)

Hope it answers your question? :)

He can sing well, but don't know about rapping. They usually don't get rap-training if they're training to be singers, even though rappers get singing training.

An idol wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing in this case. They're more likely to know how to rap AND look young enough for the part, plus there are actually several who are really good actors. It's just as varied as with actor-actors - some are good, some are bad. Lots of non-idol actors are truly horrible as well *shrugs*

If they can capture hip hop during that time period and get rap cameos, it'll so great! I agree with previous comments about Kim Min Jae. He's gotten better at acting and showed rapping potential in SMTM4 auditions. after Yong Jun-hyung, I thought Baro may also do well. I think Baro's acting range is enough to have a distinct transition from fanboy to celebrity.

It sounds fun! I've never heard there is hiphop-theme drama in K-dramaland. The only rapper that come into my mind is Kim Minjae since I've watched Romantic Doctor and Twenty Again. But I still doubt him as a lead actor.

Every time there's news about youth K-dramas, the only actor I can think of is Park Bo Gum because he had mentioned in several interviews that he wants to act as a high-schooler. I can already imagine him as shy fanboy and later become a superstar. He's a multi-talented actor but I don't think he has a rapper soul and talent in him. Although I want him to do a more mature role, but the needs to see him back to small screen is much bigger.

Love For a Thousand More (webdrama) had a hiphop theme (it's by YG, so that's probably why ha).

*imagines PBG rapping* *starts laughing* *can't stop* Yeah, I think you're right, he doesn't really seem like he'd have a "rapper soul and talent" :P It'd be a good time for him to do a high school role though, he's still so young and innocent/naive-looking.

Which is a shame, seeing as he's the Golden Maknae and all... I'm sad that Yook Sungjae didn't take this role, as he (well all of BTOB, really) is such a goofball in BTS video clips. The whole group is hilarious!

I really want Ilhoon to take on the role, but I doubt it'll happen. I've only seen him briefly in music videos and bits and pieces there, but it looks like he can act well. His face is also very expressive. He's also a great rapper, and can pull off both innocent, dorky and cool.

I wish Choi Seunghyun already finish or haven't started his military service yet.
Because he is the only person/rapper that totally capable to be a model and also great in acting that I could think about.
Well he might be old, but I think he can pull out the high-school look (remembering Chae Mooshin) and as for the not cool, he is the original bingu so I think he can be as stupid as he always be off or on camera.

I thought about him too, but.... honestly... he's way too old now to play a high school role. And unlike most other idols he actually looks mature, he doesn't have that boy-ish look, so it would be seriously hard for him to pull off I think.

There's Baro from B1A4. He was in Angry Mom and played an awkward jerk. lol His rapping is good and he definitely looks young. He's not necessarily the best actor because he's pretty green still, but I think that could help in this type of role anyway. He could always get pointers from Jinyoung.

I was just thinking of Baro too! Plus every time he's acted, he always did really well and was praised for his skill despite being green (God's Gift; Reply 1994; Master: God of Noodles). I think he couldn't totally pull this off.

I can't help but picture Block B's P.O in the role, but that's not going to happen. He's tall and has sort of a goofy, awkward nature to him. He's a rapper, but mostly untested as far as acting goes. He has been in a play and I've read he's been cast in a drama for later this year. Is he any good? I have no idea.

Thanks so much! He's much better than I'd to hope! In "Your Face" he's not rapping a whole lot, but these clips really shows his skills more :) If only that model-thing wasn't in the plot, he'd be perfect for the part!
He's honestly much better at rapping than KMJ and a more experienced actor, but KMJ fits the model description better.

Doesn't Lee Hyun Woo model really well though? His rapping is definitely good enough.

In his interview, he said

S : Shall we go back on your acting? Do you have any plan as an actor?

"To be not greedy is my plan. I don’t care whether it’s just a minor role. I’d like to develop little by little. I want to build up my acting career by taking various roles.”

Full interview in english:

He probably thinks he's not ready for lead role yet. which is why he rejected Moonlight and Shopping King and this role. Most recently, he said he wanted to play a villain.

Hahah, I wonder what is keeping him from doing age appropriate roles. And umm, I don't think he's not ready for lead roles, he has done the village drama and the moonlight character I would keep that out of consideration since it was a second lead, but this one sounds quite good to me...Sigh.

I don't mind if he rests. He's completely overworked. He's filming CF for sprite, tbj, akiii, magazine photoshoots, Goblin ended in january, he had concert in january, law of jungle filming in february, preparing for comeback in march, Japanese tour in april, and Japanese comeback in may, not to mention variety shows filming after filming and another concert in Korea soon. I would love to see him act, but I don't want to kill him.

Lol I don't get what you mean by the kill him comment. I hope you are not passing that at my direction. As an appreciator of his works I want to see better projects from him, but no idea about cf or tours, I don't follow kpop. Also we were talking about what kind of roles he want to do and his acting preferences. Just the question crossed my mind as this is the second time in a row he rejected a drama offer. No need to take it otherwise :).

the last pic kind of remind me with jungkook (with white shirt and all), generLly the male character reminds me of jungkook, but so far he's not an actor, too shy most of the time (when he's not surrounded with his hyungs), and i prefer him singing. so definitely nope, not a chance.
so.. we're looking for a good rapper and actor.. the last actor/rapper i do like is Yong Junhyung. but i can't really see him in this, so maybe not. i don't really have any ideas at all TT__TT

Then for some reason N Flying's Lee Seung-hyub came to mind. I love his singing and rapping voice a lot. I don't think he has ever acted. So no idea about his acting skill.

Baekhyun's started to rap a little more now that he's in the EXO subgroup CBX. Acting-wise, however, take a look at Moon Lovers... he needs to improve. N/Hakyeon has the model looks and height and apparently is decent at acting (haven't yet seen him in anything), but I'm not sure of his rapping skills. He's got a beautiful singing voice, though!

Well didn't you know Girlfriday, Sungjae can rap. He is not the best at it, but he can rap. He is our Yookduk... *if someone know my references*

The closest we get from rapper background idol actor who can fit as the cast is Baro. He is rapper in B1A4 even though his rap is not considered the best in the industry. Same with Hoya and Minho.
I think if we can't get Sungjae, Ilhoon can be the substitute? He has some acting experience too. Minhyuk too.
TOP is not considered youth, he is in military service anyway. The same with Taecyeon.
Somehow I want to see Junhyung again in dramaland. The last time I see him is in Monstar. But my first choice still Minhyuk BtoB, then Ilhoon then Junghyun.

2

Required fields are marked *

No way Minhyuk can play the role, he has a movie coming up.
Ilhoon would be a good choice and has that model vibe as well, but I have no idea if he's even interested. Or if they would consider him. They offered the role to his mate Sungjae, who rejected it so swiftly, I doubt they'd be happy to cast someone from the same group after that. Same with Junhyung about interest.

Required fields are marked *

Didn't Ilhoon actually go to school for acting? I feel like I read that somewhere. From what I've seen of Minhyuk... eh. He's still very green. I love Hoya but he's not that tall, so that probably won't happen.

I scanned the names that have been suggested and I like KMJ. ^^ But seems like he's already got a project lined up and will be an unlikely choice?

I know this is far out and he's not an idol, but Jisoo might not be a bad choice. I wouldn't say he's got amazing flow, but he's not too shabby at rapping. He can act and the rapping part can be trained? ??

As long as they can act. I would prefer acting over rapping. They can learn to rap and use a body double. If they are awesome at rapping but can't act, well ... I'll most likely drop it before I can even see them get to the rapping. If they can find someone who excels at both, then that's great.
