Happy Friday Beanies! For once I have a totally non drama related question for you all!

I'm planning a trip to Korea next year (I'm so excited!!) and I want to ask for advice/suggestions on where to go and what to do!

I'm planning to go either end Sept or mid October for 10 days (avoiding Chuseok (Oct 3-6), as suggested by @Kender a while back). I was told there may be post chuseok sales going on- any Beanies in Korea can confirm this?

So I'd really appreciate all suggestions on Stuff To Do, especially in the Must Not Miss category, Places to Eat or even Places to Avoid! (I have a 3 year old kid so nothing too risqué thanks ?)

I haven't planned anything yet except that I am hoping to see some of the places they filmed Moonlight Drawn By Clouds (I'm going to pass it off as historical palace sight seeing to my husband so he won't complain too much! ?) so any help would be greatly appreciated!
And I'll put up all the suggestions on my blog for future reference (tabulated and categorized- my OCD tendencies would accept no less), should any Beanies want to travel to Korea in the future ?

Thanks in advance and hope everyone has a great weekend ahead!

For Moonlight By the Clouds, visit JeonJu. Apparently I was there while they were filming but I missed it all!!!!!!! Only my non-k-drama mom saw them, ISH! We split up cos we fought and I was off visiting the Memorial of King TaeJo for free because that day was Independence day, lol. Next day when my mom went past, they charged an entrance fee, HEE!

Anyway, JeonJu is a beautiful place to visit on it's own anyway. Book a hanok room in the Hanok Village, a perfect place whether it's day or night. Stay there for at least three days, and even then it wasn't enough for me.

If you go there, definitely eat Ddeok-galbi, Beansprout Soup (there's a traditional market nearby where the soup is absolutely a delight) adn JeonJu traditional Bibimbap. Once you head to JeonJu, just ask enter any tourist stop and ask the guide for places with good food. JeonJu is perfect because it's in the Jeolla-bokdo, region, where there's mountains, seas and land, which is why their food is so varied and absolutely delicious.

I went in August, during their dog days (seriously, I still question myself why) but September to October should be perfect because that's when Autumn starts arriving.

I also went to Mokpo, YeoJu, GwangJu, Damyang and Seoul.

Ah, if you stay in Seoul first, head over to MyeongDong, where there's the largest tourist centre in all of Korea.

For deathbychocolate, since you're going in the dead of winter, definitely head to any sea for oysters, since they're in season (especially Mokpo and Yeosu).

Thanks Peeps! What did you do in Seoul and how long did you stay there for? My husband is into sightseeing with scenery so I'll definitely check out jeonju :D

Required fields are marked *

Peeps- Did you mean Bukchon Hanok Village in Seoul?
Anyway it looks awesome- my husband is gonna love it.

Required fields are marked *

No, I meant Hanok Village in Jeonju.

Of course there's a Hanok Village in Bukchon but most of the houses there are privately owned. In contrast, most of the obvious places in the HV in JeonJu are shops or private stays and therefore, in my opinion, it's livelier there. Apparently Korea's "last princess" stays there. There are little roads to wind through and hills to climb and see the view.

I didn't really spend much time in Seoul, since I'm not a shopping person. But of course, Seoul has it's fair share of interesting places. MyeongDong sells cheap socks, heh. And there's a fantastic Samgyetang stall in Noryangjin called Goguryeo or Gojoseon. Er... just ask the information counter at Seoul bus/train interchange. Instead, I went on a one day trip to ChunCheon, just a subway ride away. There's Nami Island, Petite France and Garden of the Morning Calm there, the last of which was also a filming site for Moonlight Drawn by Clouds. As for food, Chungcheon is famous for its Mak-guksu and many places sell dalk-galbi, especially near Nami Island.

Ah, if you have time, you can head up to Seoraksan in the Gangwon province. There's an awesome restaurant that sells grilled fish there, just ask any local, and there's a small teddy bear museum. It's a slow place there with nothing much to do other than relax but I liked it. At the foot of Seoraksan, there's an entrance to a temple and there's a store there that sells seafood pancake. Damn, I loved that pancake.

I generally visit places that are much less crowded, like the countrysides, but over there, there aren't many people who speak English. You should be fine, since apparently you've been taking Korean lessons?

0

ahh! thanks for clarifying Peeps! I think Jeonju sounds more up my alley since the husband likes nature and all. I will go and check it out! Im also not planning to spend too long in Seoul.

I started lessons but haven't continued recently due to me moving and restarting work. Hopefully can start again next year! So I may be better by the time I go. And this time I have better motivation too! hehe.

Ah, "Memorial of King TaeJo" was actually Gyeonggijeong Shrine. I was there, but at the wrong time, pfftt. No wonder the background scenes looked so familiar.

I walked past the Jeonjuhyanggo Confucian School too, but again at the wrong time, eesh.

Hi peeps and all beanies,

This is my first post and I am excited to come across this thread. I am leaving for South Korea in two weeks (Yay!) and I would like to know whether tickets to variety shows are possible to get. Are they on during the winter? Are they free concerts such as Christmas concerts or carols? I am planning to go down to Gyeongju and Jeonju for sure. Any ti[s from you and all the beanies? Thanks a lot.

Oof, that's going to be hard, especially if you don't speak/read Korean.

I think generally the tickets are free but you have to apply online. Of course there are shows in winter, since most of them are indoors, if you're talking about those that take audiences.

GyeongJu's so big but I've never been there before, heh. But it's an interesting place, considering how it was the capital of the Silla Kingdom.

Definitely look up this website and all their affiliated stuff (FB, twitter etc) including Seoul Weekly and the Seoul Selection Guides. I haven't been in Seoul in years but reading their stuff it's clear to me that there's more going on every day than one could ever hope to do! They've been nice about answering emails, too.

Hey Raras!

I visited South Korea for the first time in September, and it was AMAZING!!

I'm so glad that you've got Gyeongju down on your list - it was hands down my favourite place out of all the places I visited. So breathtakingly scenic!! My friend and I stayed in a hanok the short time that we were there (totally worth it, and a lot more authentic in terms of experience) - we were only there for two days, but boy did we regret not giving it more time.

It truly is a palace without walls; the best part was, the culture and hospitality. It's not overly touristy which is what I loved about the place. And we managed just fine on the limited Korean we knew - so don't let that put you off visiting the place!!

Navigating was fairly easy as long as you make a note of basic phrases, and names of places/address in Hangul. Definitely visit the Silla kingdom, anapji pond, and the Bulguksa!! We managed to do all of those in the 2 days we were there, easily. A heads up - the silla kingdom was breathtaking at night time!

This was our two week itinerary:

Jeju do - 2 nights, 3 days
Busan - 3 nights, 4 days
Gyeongju - 1 night, 2 days
Seoul - 7 nights

The time we dedicated to each place was enough to give us a real flavour of the place. The last 7 nights in Seoul allowed us to take a breather from all the hopping about we did in the first week. But I can honestly say, every single place we visited was a winner!! My favourite was most definitly Gyeongju, followed by Busan. The rest was the icing on the cake. Enjoy your time there!

Thanks peeps and namedx for your information. This is gonna be my second trip. I was in Seoul for a conference last year so I did not have the chance to go out of Seoul. But this time I will be taking my family with me. Luckily, my teenage boys like anything related to history (and theme parks) and not shopping malls, so those two places are a must. I don't speak Korean, so that might be a challenge, but I do have a Korean dictionary in my cellphone. If I want to see the variety show, I would love to enjoy the atmosphere. I am OK with being clueless of what's going on :). Since it is Christmas, I have been trying to find shows related to Christmas concerts (classic or pop), but the information is mostly in Korean. Any tips for useful websites for people with no or limited Korean? I will be staying for two weeks until the new year.

0

Hi Raras,
You can subscribe to the weekly email update of goings-on-around-town from Seoul Selection. Everyone, it's a lovely email with articles of interest about Korea and simply gorgeous photography. There's also a Seoul Selection app where I bet you can find out more about seasonal concerts and activities for your trip. Also check their Facebook page. If you contact their editor Robert Koehler with a question or two, he probably knows if it's possible to contact the tv networks in English about variety shows.

I've enjoyed so many beautiful photos from all over Korea and lots from Bukchon Hanok Village on this website.

Are you planning to go to Nami Island, aka Winter Sonata island? I went during winter and it's seriously beautiful! I imagine it would be pretty during fall too. And if you do go there, you have to eat at this bbq restaurant that sells the most amazing grilled chicken coated with Korean spicy / honey sauce. I am sorry I don't remember the restaurant's name but I don't think there are too many restaurants there so it shouldn't be too hard to find.

Hi michykdrama! So happy for your korean trip!! Extra meaningful especially for us kdrama/kpop fans haha!

I've been visiting Seoul yearly for around 6 yrs now and that place is just like healing for me, haha! For first timers, I recommend the following:

1. Myeongdong (shopping, street food, cosmetics)
2. N seoul tower (from myeongdong subway, use oreumi elevator for an easier trip up to the cable car station)
3. The palaces (Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung)
4. Bukchon Hanok Village (we often stay half of our trip in Myeongdong and half Iin Bukchon, in a guesthouse where we sleep on the heated floors. Super nice in spring, fall and winter)
5. Samcheongdong
6. Insadong
7. Cheonggyecheon stream (go in the afternoon and dip ur feet in the cool waters after a long day of walking)
8. Hongdae saturday free market
9. Han river during the weekends and try watching the water and lights show
10. If you still have time to go out of Seoul and are willing to do alot of walking, it's nice to go to Nami Island and the Korean Folk Village where alot of dramas have been filmed (Empress Ki, Rooftop Prince, Moon that Embraces the Sun

For foodie recs:

1. Tosokchon - most popular samgyetang in Korea
2. Gogung - best jeonju dolsot bibimbap
3. Yoogane - dak galbi dipped in melted mozzarella (featured in shows like Signal, Misaeng etc)
4. Noryangjin fish market - if adventurous, try the live baby octopus hehe (Drinking Solo memories)
5. Congee house - super good abalone porridge
6. TwoTwo - really good chicken and beer
7. Keun Giwa Jip - raw crabs marinated in soysauce (resto featured in Let's Eat). Popular but a bit pricey. Though for me, worth the price. I've eaten here repeatedly hehe.
8. Dawon traditional teahouse in Insadong - try the jujube tea with frozen persimmons. Yum!
9. Seorae galmaegi - the one in Hoegi was the same resto featured during the drinking scenes in DotS. Super good grilled meat and kimchi jjigae!
10. Sulbing - for really good bingsu
11. Myeongdong streetfood!! Haha

Let me know if I can help you with anything else. Oh and if u want to know directions for places like the bar frequented by the 2nd couple in DotS (serve really good ricewine!!) or Yoo Ah In's cafe etc haha ..happy planning!! ?

Hi michykdrama

I would recommend going end October to early November as this is the best timing for the autumn foliage~~~

Jeonju, as suggested by a few, is excellent as it offers both excellent food and great history and culture.

You can also pair it with a couple of days in Jeongeup, where you can go to both Naejangsan and Baekyangsa.
They are lovely in autumn. Google for pictures!

Aww lucky you.
I went 2 yrs back - also during autumn- last week of October. The weather was mild and cool.
I was pregnant then so couldnt be overly adventurous
Listing out what i enjoyed and remember
1. Cafes and street arts in Hong dae
2. Gyeongbokgung palace- and dont skip the underground museum- it was very informative and FREE
3. Suwon Hwaseong Fortress - and nearby street has best bibimbap
4. N Seoul tower- do check local calendar and avoid on their public holidays. Bring your own locker to clip on the love lock
5. Myeondong- some streets feels repetitive cause the same brand has multiple outlets here but great place to pick up cosmetics and face/hand/feet mask
6. Cruise ride on Han gang river- it was 30min ride i thk- very enjoyable and relaxing

Theres actually alot we missed out in going but we lacked time as the trip includes 4d3n in Jeju and 3d2n in Busan too.

On food
Seafood is better and yummier in busan than seoul
Abalone porridge in jeju and non muslims- black pork
Patbingsu for dessert- yums
Jelly drinks- i couldnt get enough of those at all 7-11s and convenience stores
Of all the coffee places i prefer Holly's Cafe

Okay guys, I have a VERY VERY important question.

I am studying abroad in Spain next semester and I need to know:

IS VIKI AVAILABLE IN SPAIN?

I mean I will probably just download a ton of dramas before I leave anyway but Viki is my lifesource.

0

Required fields are marked *

I have no idea but it works in South America (though so incredibly slow).

0

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, I'm sure it will be slower in Spain than it is in the US, too, if it's available.

Part of me still wishes I would've chosen Korea but Spain was so much cheaper. I'm super excited though! I'm just more interested in Korea.

But I speak Spanish and I do not speak Korean, so Spain was probably the better choice, haha.

Just worried about getting my drama fix! ? Hopefully I will be so busy having fun that I will forget all about dramas! (Is that possible?!)

I don't know why I laughed a lot when I read your question!

If it doesn't work, you can just download a VPN and set your "country" to the U.S. (It basically tricks websites into thinking your computer is in the U.S., not somewhere else.) I use one when I'm out of the country to watch DramaFever and Viki (most recently in Korea) since the dramas on those sites aren't available everywhere. I recommend Hotspot Shield, which has mobile apps, too, so you can watch dramas on your phone.

The VPN slows things down a bit, because the connection has to route through a different location, but you gotta do what you gotta do!

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

A good VPN is your answer! I recommend Psiphon, it usually works fine. Also try OpenVPN and BetterNet(if you have a Mac, this one is good).

Also if it still doesn't work out, don't fret, there are a bunch of other websites online that aren't as good but will do, like dramafire.com or gooddrama.

0

Required fields are marked *

Adding on to the VPN advice, I use a Google Chrome extension called "Hola." I like it because I'm lazy, and it suggests the *best country* from which I should view whatever website I'm trying to access.

Good luck getting your shows, and good luck with school!

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but Hola is like a second lead who acts sweet and nice, then does all sorts of bad things when you aren't looking. It has been recommended many times here on DB that people not use Hola (or uninstall it if already installed). More info can be found here:

Don't feel sorry. This is important to note every time someone recs it!!

Never fear; it is available :-) . Of course we do get the "not available in your region" slap in the face once in a while, but there are plenty of other shows to fall back on, and I think all the major ones are licensed here too. Quick test: the first three shows featured on the website, Legend of the Blue Sea, Shopping King Louie and W, all work.

About speed, of course it all depends on your data plan, but please beanies, give us some credit; cable companies these days are offering 100MB, and upgrading us to 200MB unasked (but that's another story :-p)

So excited to start watching Goblin once it releases the eng subbed episode tomorrow! Never really been a fan of KES (but I still watch her dramas lol) but the trailer looks SO good. Man, so much anticipation for the reaper x goblin bromance!

I'm only watching 2 dramas right now and they're both from China. Been on a drama slump ever since Signal ended; I started Moon Lovers and Moonlight when it was airing but I never really got to pick them up again.

So far, I'm really motivated to finish Princess Weiyoung and When a Snail Falls in Love, especially since they're both ending this December! I've only watched Korean, Japanese and Taiwanese dramas before so I never really expected that I'd have a C-drama phase lol (and wow, I'm much more invested with Chinese dramas than I ever was with Taiwanese dramas)

Same on Goblin! It seems very different tonally from her other dramas. I'm interested to see what the drama itself is like.

I'm so glad you like When a Snail Falls in Love! Is Princess Weiyoung a similar level of production? Is there CGI? Is the CGI good? I've been looking at it but my drama schedule is so tight I haven't watched any yet, oops. :P Is it worth a try?

It has a few CGI and almost everyone's problem with it is the....butterflies lmao

Princess Weiyoung is a beautiful drama with vibrant colors! I absolutely love their costumes, accessories and sets. You might find their make-up to be obvious, though. It also has a different level of production, at least for me, with Snail! Watching Snail feels like watching a movie :-)

Nevertheless, I think it's worth a try mainly for its story and cast (since Tang Yan has always played Candy roles before). I like the pacing of the story and I find it to be engrossing especially when WY outsmarts the evil people. You go girl!

I am watching it, too. Interesting so far. Snail was sooooooooooooo great. They did rush the romance a teensy bit, but I loved it anyway. It was beautiful and well-acted and the writing kept me guessing.

I didn't realize the show was ending and have now started reading the book it is based on by Ding Mo. The translation isn't completely correct, but I still like it because the romance is front and center.

I am also excited for Goblin!! Mostly because they filmed scenes for 4 or 5 episodes 2 hours from where I live!! They even talked about it in the local news! I was so shocked when I saw the trailer and recognized some of the places!!

It was a bit funny. They had to explain in the news why it was such a big deal and how big the production was. They called Gong Yoo le «Brad Pitt» coréen (The Korean "Brad Pitt")... lol ok...

If only I had known, I would I've gone to check it out but you know university does not accept "I had to see Gong Yoo" as a valid reason to miss midterms...unfortunately.

Snail falls in love is sooo good imo! This, Ode to Joy and Love Me if You Dare (even if it is slightly draggy in the end) are the only modern c-dramas I’ve watched and liked.
As for Goblin, I wish the best for Gong Yoo, after Big fiasco (no pun intended) I’ve wanted a fine comeback to him in drama land. KES dramas are popular, but I wasn’t that excited about DotS, and even though the actors did a good job there, the story was not my style (sorry!).
I’m hoping that Kim Go Eun’s character gets better, because I found her acting rather cringy here, she isn’t great in portraying this types of characters imo... funny b/c I thought she was great in Coin Locker Girl (in Eungyo too, but still she was least awkward in CLG).

just watched raw ep for goblin and man oh man was it good, the cinematography was great, the acting and characterization were great, it felt like a fantasy drama, very cinematic and idk what iwas expecting for gong yoo and go euns dynamic and chemistry tbh i was a bit pessimistic when it came to their chemistry but after watching the drama i have to say those two have such a natural chemistry and it radiates. the first ep was heavy on the feels and dong wook was wonderful as the reaper.

Gong Yoo’s chemistry is no joke. Coffee Prince was so good, because even his gaze was scalding. Despite what happened in CITT, KGE and PHJ chemistry was natural too. To me, Park He Jin and Kim Go Eun’s; and Kim Rae Won and Park shin Hye’s chemistry have been most interesting and appealing to me. I’m rooting for Gong Yoo and KGE chemistry too. Shouldn’t be a problem KES is talented in writing romance, even if they aren’t necessarily my style

I'm not a fan of KSE either but I'm liking the pilot episode a lot and I was surprised that the sub was done really early, around 8 am yay.

I usually rewatch Lord of the Rings around this time of the year but I think I'm going to watch Goblin instead.

What? Really? I'm working today, so I haven't looked around, but just assumed it'd come out later tonight but omg, it's all subbed!? Gahhhhhh! Apparently the first two eps are 90 mins–did it feel draggy at all? That was my only worry but not really since I expected the setup to be exciting and full of intro. I'm hoping the two long eps is to set everything up and then there's gonna be a time jump.

@Kiara

Would you like to have a game of guessing of who will be doing recap for Goblin?

I would love if javabeans and girlfriday team up to recap this one. But consider that they already have LotBS on their plate, it might be unlikely.

So my guess would be gummimochi?

@축하해

My guess is JB or Heads :). Most likely HeadsNo2.

So far, I like the interaction between Goblin and Grim Reaper. Then again, I can also just watch them sitting on the table and glaring at each other for the whole episode. It's a luxury to have GY and LDW together in the same drama.

He is going to start his enlistment sometime in December, in social work. During the pre-enlistment exam, he was diagnosed with a cerebral aneurysm, likely lingering from the accident so many years ago with oppa Lee Min Ho. Basically, unless treated (= brain surgery), he has a very highly probability of hemorrhagic stroke within his lifetime.

Yes, I know! I wonder if he'll have surgery or not. Is the location of his aneurism someplace that is very hard to reach? I can sympathize a very little bit with his head injury years ago. Mine was from my horse tripping while I was riding in 2005. He tripped, I came off, and he did a cartwheel onto me. I had a grade 3 concussion, bleeding on the brain, a seizure, and I don't remember that week. His came from a pretty bad car accident in 2006 that also hurt LMH, from what little I understand about it all. I sincerely hope that he takes this seriously and is careful during his enlistment. He must be so scared but has to put on a brave face. Aww.

Happy Friday, Beanies! Wasn't 1% lovely? I'm watching Drinking Solo now to stay connected to at least half our couple.
I'm curious, what are the different ways people are finding OSTs? I've generally used iTunes but something like JI wasn't there (using title in English or Korean).

Another dumb question-I haven't been able to get the DB commenting boxes to remain auto populated w my name and mail for a long time (using iPad). Is it just me?

I hope everyone will have a good week around the world.

For the OSTs on iTunes, sometimes the alternate English titles work. For Jealousy Incarnate, try the alternate drama title Don't Dare To Dream and see if that works.

Regarding the autopopulated box situation, I don't know what happened but it stopped working for me a while back regardless of what device I'm using.

I copy pasted the Hangul/Romanisation/English translation into iTunes for some of the songs and was able to find them. I haven't been able to do that for all as I do not have the time ATM and as such I do not know if the entire OST is available there, but will end up having to do that later on b/c I like the OST that much. In addition to Spotify, you can also try Google Music and Deezer.

If you would like to stick with the YouTube option, you can use YouTube Red which is a paid subscription service that allows you to view/listen to YouTube songs offline and in the background/without the screen being "active." You can also find other ways of converting the YouTube music video to an MP3, but there may or may not be risks associated with that.

Hi Everyone! ....... It's been a couple of weeks since I last visited OT so I'm glad I'm able to visit today. As always, I hope you are all doing well!

Watched this week:

Jealousy Incarnate - Just finished this last night. Loved this from beginning to end! While I've always loved Gong Hyo-jin in pretty much everything she's done, it's Jo Jung-seok's performance that was a true standout for me.

The Man Living In Our House - Still tuning in to this because it still has those fun moments here and there. Deok-shim and Deok-bong crack me up. Gotta say that even with his limited airtime, I'm finding the Wan-shik character more and more interesting.

Tree With Deep Roots - Years after the fact, I've finally made it around to start watching this one. Yay! ..... It certainly brings back memories of Six Flying Dragons and reminders of how outstanding that particular drama was and how I much I miss it. ..... Up to episode 6 and enjoying it so far.

That's all for now. ....... Everyone take care and have a great Friday!

I also saw an article about the SBS Daesang contenders and Jo Jung-suk is being considered along with Han Seok-kyu, Jeon Ji-hyun, Lee Jun-ki and Kim Rae-won. I don't know if we can bank on him actually winning, but I'm glad to see him getting some recognition.

Happy Friday everyone!
I've been sticking around Lobsters hoping it gets better and finally in ep 6 the humour doesn't feel like slapstick anymore and for once since ep 1 I don't feel JJH's overacting her part and LMH as not immersing in the character. I love ep 6's epilogue more than anything else and it was worth all the endurance for the past 5 eps.

I'm still enjoying Fairy. Sorry to hear that some fellow beanies do not find it to their liking (@ET :D - anyway I hope you'll find your crack drama soon to replace 1% of anything. If I could say something about this drama then it reminds me of a time when Kdrama heroines have more backbone than they normally do today.) I must admit the recent eps lost me a little though; I feel like the story drags out a little bit so I hope more heart-warming stuff will come soon.

I've also caught up with the latest ep of When a Snail Falls in Love. This is my top favourite drama right now and I'm so glad I was lurking around OPs to see its name pop up.

I'm watching Goblin right now. The premise seems interesting (*seems*, because I don't understand a single word of it, so might need to wait for sub to have better judgement). The cinematography is amazing for the first half of the drama that I'm watching, especially the part in the past. Constantly reminds me of what visual greatness that mess of a drama which-cannot-be-named should and could have been lol.

So, we are waiting for our second lead actress, the friend colluding with her, and step brother to still appear in joseon times right?

I love how both shows did some comedic twists on the K-drama cliches this week. Must say that's some clever thing that they do. HJJ's brother must thought he hit her really hard for her to behave in such a weird way. Poor guy lol. I can't stop giggling when I thought about Joon-Huyng's turning Bok Joo into a splash shield either.

The many things I have learnt in my three months in Korea
- The drinking is a thing! You know how we are always hitting on them having females drink… blah blah… the drinking culture is very real guys. Those characters were not alcoholic, they were simply Korean. I think I have gotten drunk at least once a week since I came… everything ends in drinking. Even school sponsored programs. I attend Korea university, and our biggest pride is how good students are at drinking makgeolli. So next time you judge a character for drinking… count it as cultural difference.
- Korean fashion. Oh my God! So I always used to judge the wardrobe stylists of dramas. ‘Why cant you dress the characters like normal people?’ (I am looking at you, Lucky Romance)… Except, Lord Jesus, they were dressed ‘normal’. Korean fashion is a thing that I will never understand… also, they have a weird thing against showing shoulders. Wear your itty bitty duckie shorts, no one has a problem. But baring shoulders / show cleavage and all the ahjummas are giving you the eye. That’s why the T-shirt under the dress thing is so prevalent.
- You know how you watch a drama, and a guy is sitting in a chair, legs crossed, looking ABSOLUTELY perfect reading a book/ drinking coffee or something… and you think ‘oh silly drama, no one does that’. THEY TOTALLY DO! At least three times a week, I see a guy who completely stops me in my tracks just from how perfect he looks sitting down/ reading his book. I love it!
- Koreans and Americanos (the coffee drink) . Actually, Koreans and coffee in general. Tell me why coffee houses are full at 11pm at night, and people are stilling ordering Americanos and espressos. What to make money here? Start a coffee house. So the fact theyre always ordering Americanos in dramas… totally true of the country.
- The clubbing culture. Lord God, this doesn’t get shown in dramas… or maybe it does. But a lot of guys are totally groping ass creeps. Do not go alone. Go with friends. Preferably male friends. I went with 2 guys and 2 girls the last time and my male friends spent the night dragging us away from groping hands. And in the morning, they had to forcibly send a stalkish guy away from another one of our school friends…. Good times. So you know how you think the creep factor has been raised to make dramas interesting… it has not.
- School. Is. Hard! None of the school dramas is an exaggeration. I have never studied as hard in my life and I am still just ‘getting by’. It is totally a cultural thing… these people study their lives and asses off! My respect has quadrupled for Koreans since I came here.
- Aegyo is gross. It may look cute on Tv, but try being on a subway and some girl is doing the cutesy voice when talking to her boyfriend *inner barf. And it is usually not a one time thing… this is the voice a lot of people use to talk to their boyfriends… there is a research in there for a psychology student and its connection to pedophilia. Also, Korea is...

Required fields are marked *

Also, Korea is relationship- central. I have never felt more single in my life. My friends and I took a shot for every couple we saw at the Han river, HA! We were skunk drunk in like 30 mins! And you will know theyre a couple, coz they either got couple rings, sweaters, shoes… or the girl is doing the goddamned aegyo voice.
- Korea’s conservativism is laughable. Sure, people do not full on kiss in public. But the busiest places on my street are the dvd bang (about $7 for a 2 hour movie. Leather couches, so nothing penetrates. Hangers to hold you clothes while doing the business. Towels and tissues to clean up. The whole set up) and love motels ($10-20 per night). And people are really not that innocent. It is time for them to stop doing those awkward open eye kisses in dramas, where girls do not know how to respond because 97% of the girls are not like that.
- Group blind dates / one on one blind dates are the most awkwardly delightful things ever! I have a Korean friend who goes on two a week…. And he is still single ( -__-). I have been in some too, and they are SOOOO AWKWARD, instead of dreading them, I totally love them now. It is incredible!
- PUPPY CAFES! PUPPY CAFES! PUPPY CAFES! KITTEN CAFES! KITTEN CAFES! KITTEN CAFES! This is where the bulk of my monthly budget goes.

A puppy cafe. So animal cafes are a thing here. Its a little cafe, filled with animals that play with you. So you pay (around $7), you get a drink (some are free, some you gotta buy) and you hang out with the animals. They are left to run around free and sit in your laps and stuff. So I basically pay money to play with puppies...

While we were surrounded by girls in verrrrrrry short shorts and skirts. So now we pack our outfits accordingly haha!

But the cool thing that I like about them is that they are very friendly and always willing to help a poor lost soul lol! They'd even stop everything and leave their things just to help you. Another time a guy didn't even care that he was getting rained on, he was so focused on helping us find our way. Also, last year, the people beside our table at Noryangjin helped pick apart our crab and made us crab rice coz we were so hopeless haha!! Always a fun trip for me ?

Ok, I get that the drinking is a cultural thing. But I'm truly curious:
-- aren't women (or men too) afraid of passing out and not being more alert for their safety? Or is it pretty safe in Korea?
-- aren't the people worried about the possible health consequences of drinking too much ?
I'm not saying that they shouldn't drink , but I'm just curious if they do worry about the above.

What if one doesn't like the taste of alcohol or has medical issue preventing him/her from drinking, is it acceptable to refuse an alcoholic drink, without looking disrespectful?

People are aware of the health consequences and there are campaigns to try and reduce alcohol consumption... but I don't imagine they are very successful. It is just too ingrained in their culture, sadly.

I'm also curious as to how they treat people who don't drink. I don't drink as a personal choice so I wonder how people would react to that if I were to ever go to Korea. I'm up to try literally any kind of food but I will always refuse alcohol. I hope they wouldn't see it as rude.

I even know people here in the States who kind of get made fun of for not drinking. I've never experienced it but I am only 21 so I haven't been exposed to drinking culture that long yet.

Awesome write up on life in Korea. I really enjoyed the tid-bits of knowledge about life on the ground there and how it compares to our perception from dramas. Thanks!

One thing though.

As a guy who really really loves the aegyo and general cute aesthetic common among East Asian cultures, I find your comment regarding the fascination with cute aesthetic and aegyo and an implied link to pedophilia disconcerting.

Granted, I'm no scientist nor psychologist.

But, anecdotally, I know I'm not attracted to children.

A cute little girl acting adorable makes me want to hug her and protect her like a father.

I am, however, attracted to women of age who act in cute manner, embrace an adorable or youthful aesthetic, and have a childish side to them.

I don't know what to make of that, but maybe that's for a smarter man than me.

Anyway, thanks for the comment!

Very interesting read, thank you!

FOR ANYONE CURIOUS ABOUT HEAVY DRINKING CULTURE. Just because it's a part of their culture does not mean that they aren't possibly alcoholic. Just because it's a cultural difference does not mean you can't find it wrong. I'm from a culture with pretty much the exact same drinking culture as South Korea (from what I've seen and heard). I wasn't in the least bit shocked by anything regarding the consumption of alcohol in kdramas and paid no attention to it until I saw other international fans pointing such things out. The amount of alcohol required for people here to get drunk is usually extremely high, because they build a sort of intolerance and, just as with drugs, they require more and more and it takes longer and longer until they feel the buzz, until their actual alochol level in the blood rise. There was a study on this and studies have also shown that a really big number of ordinary people are actually alcoholic because they drink so much. Not only does it damage their health, but they're literally addicted without realizing, without anyone realizing, because it's considered normal. A general rule of thumb from our medical community (that is conveniently forgotten by most people) is that women shouldn't drink more than 7 "objects" a week, men 14. And medically it's far worse to drink all of those in one night than spread out over the week.

All that probably applies to South Korean culture as well, as human biology is basically the same on these points.
Things about my own country's heavy drinking culture that I don't know if fits the South Korean one:

People will drink until they drop, with the purpose of getting drunk and from a very early age (legally allowed to drink by 16, buy drink by 18 and lots of parents allow their children from age 12 and up to taste alchohol at home). They'll also drink not just on fridays or saturdays, but weekdays as well. In my high school class it was normal for kids to show up hungover/literally still drunk on a thursday.

It can also be damaging socially as it means a lot of people have a hard time connecting with people they haven't gone out to drink with and if you don't drink at all or that much, you will not only be pretty left out of a lot of social things, but also experience a lot of pressure to drink at parties and join in drinking events/go out drinking.

All this to say, please don't blindly adopt their drinking culture if/when any of you go to South Korea. It is damaging to your health and just because they consider it normal does not mean that it's a good idea. Again, this is coming from someone with a similar culture, I'm not judging SK or my own countrymen, I'm just concerned and also felt it might be enlightening to those who don't know what such a drinking culture is like. I wouldn't expect anyone visiting my country to adopt our drinking culture, though I sadly think people might feel pressured...

Anyways, most of this stuff I totally expected. Maybe it's because I also watch a lot of variety, not just dramas?

Or actually, I think it may have most to do with FT Island's 5-ep variety "Coming Out" LOL, despite being celebs which of course means not quite ordinary lifestyle, they were just so honest and young-guy-like with what they said that any illusion about South Korean innocence was totally and utterly destroyed haha. If you want your picture-perfect image destroyed that is definitely the show to watch!
eatyourkimchi (think that's what it's called at least) blog also destroyed some illusions.

The aegyo. Oh gosh, I'll never understand why anyone likes it. I cringe so hard it's not even funny, especially when it's done by male idols who in actuality are grown ass men in their mid-20s. In general I find it pretty insufferable, but I've realized I even sometimes do it too without realizing lol! And it's not even because of dramas. So I guess I don't really have the right to find it cringey?

The clubbing culture sounds awful, a lot like ours, but worse. I've never gone but have friends who do and they all have stories of having their guy friend pretend to be their bf because someone just wouldn't give up or having to pretend they're gay and dating each other.

There are actual perfect guys sitting and reading at cafes?? How is that even possible? I've never in my life seen that.

The studying part makes me think twice about my wish to go there and study one day. Don't think I'd do well with that kind of pressure, how they all handle it is beyond me. I've seen and heard so much about how hardworking Koreans are and I really admire it. Work hard, play hard, I guess?

I was wondering. The noraebang thing. Variety shows have made me think that they go to the karaoke a lot or is that just a misrepresentation?

Thank you so much for all this info, I loved reading your post!

THANK YOU FOR SAYING THAT ABOUT THE DRINKING CULTURE. Honestly, I hate it when people say stuff like, "Oh, it's just the culture". That's for things like taking your shoes off before entering a home or eating insects or the types of clothes people wear and stuff like that.

Overconsumption of alcohol is a real medical and societal concern these days in many places. Just because something is commonplace doesn't mean it's right. People in the US eat a lot of fast food but that doesn't mean it isn't a problem just because it's basically part of our culture now! Although the US is weird with health habits... right now many people are on a health kick but plenty of people still eat unhealthy fast foods.

I remember my trip to Korea and I was so in awed when I saw some of the typical Kdrama scene. So many couples! -_-

I was the most surprised at the airport when I saw parents literally bawling sending off their son at the gate. I have never seen anyone older than 10 crying in public unless there is a funeral.

Hi, Beanies, happy Friday. Here's a fun-fact: Javabeans can predict the future.

I was reading an 'Angry Mom' recap a while back and noticed something which now seems quite funny. On the recap of episode four, Javabeans wrote, "Bok-dong is fast becoming my favorite character, thanks to both the layered writing and the excellent portrayal by young actor Jisoo (he’s very new and only has a handful of credits, like Han Gong-ju, and made his debut in a theater play. I’m betting he’ll be breaking out in no time)."

The last sentence is the focus here. Now, after 'Sassy Go Go', 'Page Turner', 'Fantastic', and more, Javabeans has proven that she can predict the future. Jisoo did break out, and now we all love him.

Have a great weekend!

I'm going on another trip next week!!! Wheee!!!!!

In the meantime, I've stocked up on Oh my GeumBi recaps and I've programmed them to post over a period of two weeks, heh. Episode 2's on my blog right now for anyone curious.

Just finished today's Three Meals a Day and boy, was it a lot more...relaxed (aka, boring). Eric wasn't in charge of lunch today, so SeoJin and KyunSang had to muddle their way through, which was kind of entertaining, hah. I've also started putting up translations of the food Eric's been making, all content from the official Three Meals a Day website, though those posts are pre-programmed too, so, ha.

Heard that Yoo HoJin PD's joining another sub-company and leaving 1 Night 2 Days. I think we'll be okay, seeing how it's stabalized so far. I hopw HoJin PD comes up with something more interesting for our sakes, just like Na PD! No matter how great he was for 1 Night 2 Days, and as much as I love 1 Night 2 Days, I don't want it to be his best programme. He's still so young and there's so much more time for him to challenge himself and come up with other programames that are just as good or even better.

Ah, my last week of rest before I go travel and then after, when work really comes raining down. I'm gonna use it well.

I didn't understand the appeal of Eric until this season of 3 Meals. I love 3 Meals with Seo Jin bc I thought Seo Jin was great in Grandpas Over Flowers.

Since this season of 3 Meals started, I have watched Eric's Discovery of Romance (LOVE IT) and Another Oh Hae Young (AMAZING!).

I get the appeal of Eric now. Boy. Do I!

I'm thinking of the appearance of yet another car of doom this year in Lobster, and laughing away at the thread conversation about 'poor ToD, missed your chance!'
'Tod' actually means 'dead' in German, so yeah: Truck of Doom = death (or amnesia).

Happy Friday Beanies! :D

Came down with another virus or something, so have been at home in bed bingewatching anything and everything lol. It also means that this post will be long and rambling lol, I apologize in advance ^^

LotBS: Tried ep 1. Not capturing my interest although I love the writer and JJH. Maybe it's because LMH always comes off as boring to me, but it's not doing anything for me so far. Pretty much dropped Entourage as well, it just feels so pointless and lacking in depth.

Pied Piper: So good! Only 2 eps to go and I love how complex the male protagonist and antagonist are. The female character is pretty meh, but where's the news in that. 2016 have really given us some great crime shows – TF38, this, Signal. Thank you cable networks!

She's So Lovable: Yes. I finished it. It's even worse than shows like Neighborhood Hero. Why is it that 'bland' can be even worse than 'terrible'? L did an OK job here I think, he's not an amazing actor, but he didn't make me cringe or anything. Hopefully he'll learn and get better. Fighting!

King of Mask: Speaking of L, I just finished the ep where he appeared. Had no idea he sang that well, very pleasantly surprised! It's easy to tell that it's his voice lol, it's so unique and distinctive. I found it pretty hilarious how it seemed like he was trying to keep the ”cool and mysterious” image his company gave him when the mask came off, while when it was on Myungsoo appeared in all his glory haha! Reminded me of the hilarious Ppap sketch with him and another Infinite member (Woohuyn?) on SNL Korea.

Speaking of SNL Korea, I'm so, so, so disappointed in TvN and the show. I don't generally comment on scandals, but I've really enjoyed this show whenever I've been able to find subbed sketches, but this is just so unacceptable on every level, it's even freaking criminal. It made me wonder how many of the male guests have been subjected to this. I wish I could say I'm shocked that something like this has been going on and made a joke of or even that I'm shocked to see the comments from people on how the guys must gay if they didn't like it and that they must've liked it since they didn't speak up. But sadly it's just the kind of world we live in, it just makes me so sad and frustrated :( At least someone else has reported to the police for them! I hope TvN/SNLK/perpetrators realize how serious this is, suffer consequences and never do something like this again. I don't think I'll ever be able to watch this show again unless they show a significant change in how they handle this.

Knowing Brothers: Is it just me or are the guys really flirtatious with Heechul these days? :P It cracks me up, because he's the one with all the rumors, yet a) he's the one to honestly and sincerely get flustered/blushing/crushing on all the women (along with KH, of course :b ) and b) it's the other guys being all over him, not the other way around lol! Still can't get over the fact that he's in his early 30s.. I think some idol found the Fountain of Youth and is giving other idols a sip now and then ;) I dl'ed KHxHC's song and changed the artist name to ”Universe Cowards” kkkkk. The mv was hilarious and felt so contradictory to the song, the ending was adorable, reminded me of K.Will's amazing ”Please Don't” mv.

Flower Crew: Seungyoon has joined! Yay! Looking forward to when he gets to know them better and opens up a bit more, he can be so hilarious. Missing the weirdness that is Jaejin though, what is it with idols named Lee Jaejin? Both him and FTIsland's Lee Jaejin are such adorable weirdos LOL (saying this lovingly and as someone who's been ”accused” of having even more than 4 dimensions herself :P).

KPop Star 6: First time watching this show and I love how professional they are compared to the Western audition shows. JYP and YHY are just awesome and there are some really talented singers!

Gong Myong is gonna be on WGM! So excited ^^ I usually only watch this show when people I know are really skilled at variety are on (as it's usually much too scripted and contrived for my taste), but will make an exception for GM, despite not having seen him in much outside of dramas, cause he's such a cute puppy :D Him almost breaking down crying on Hello Counselor made me love him even more, can't wait to watch him be all adorable and sweet. It's like a drama where he finally gets the girl lol.

Does anyone know when the next season of New Journey to the West is gonna start? Looking forward to seeing how Kyuhyun and Mino will blend in with the other guys!

Re, SNL, so disappointed and they even call it a tradition. Come on, that is a big no.
I've heard the rumor that comedian actually have way more strict hierarchy system and there are so many questionable tradition but I never actually thought it has some truth.

Re : Knowing Brothers. Love this program so much and I realised that Jang Hoon likes to said that heechul is so pretty nowadays. Sang Min becomes more vocal and they gonna be so happy in the next ep when they knew that Universe Coward, the song and video are successful.

Really? I had no idea about that. I shudder to just think of what "traditions" they might have then as well as wondering how often things like this possibly happen in general in the entertainment industry, not just in South Korea, but otherwhere as well.

KB is such an awesome show. I really like Sangmin, he can be really funny and he's always got some sincere advice, so I'm rally happy to see him more vocal as you mentioned. I hope it's a result of his treatment going well and his anxiety slowly lessening :)

@bbstl You know, I was gonna deny that statement. But then I realized I would be lying :P Even when talking his voice sounds swoony and he's not only handsome, he's also got a mischiveous 4D personality, which is like my ultimate weekness lol. How do you expect me to fight against that?!

@Sera LOL that title would be much better! I describe the show the same way I do Prime Minister and I - it's offensively bland. And yeah, the chemistry just wasn't there between them and it didn't just have to do with age. Rain's character was also fairly dull and poorly written, especially in comparison to the more complex Shi Woo. I really like Rain, but for some reason he tends to pick dramas that are a bit messy or repetitive (like Full House or CBA, the latter of which I actually really liked, but which kind of got lost at times).

I LOVED CBA but I got annoyed with Rain's character at times. I think Oh Yeon Seo and Honey Lee owned that drama with their womance relationship. ??

By the way I do love L too. First time I watched him as secretary to Joo Sang Wook in Cunning Single Lady I fell in love with him. Sometime about him that you cannot forget. I must admit I don't usually like cute and pretty boys.

@Sera Yes! The womance in CBA was awesome. Those two actresses/characters were the main reason I kept watching, as Rain's char could be a little exasperating at times.

I actually found his acting a bit cringey in CSL, but I loved him in SUFFB which is where I saw him first. You're definitely right about there being something you can't forget. I don't mind flower boys, but I generally mostly find them attractive on an aesthetic level if that makes sense lol.

@boom Ha, yeah the dog was cute (:

They uploaded a video on SNS of a "hazing" tradition from behind the scenes where B1A4 were guesting and all the cast were there and greeting them. Then suddenly several women ran over and touched their private areas. Their reaction definitely indicated they did not see it coming, so it was not a skit. SNLK also stated themselves that it's a "hazing" meaning a ritual thing and bts.

Videos of the same thing happening to Infinite and Block B have also surfaced and while a lot of people are calling SNLK out on sexual harrasment, SNLK keeps treating it very lightly.

Fortunately it's been reported to the police by a third party and it's now being investigated. One of the comediennes is on "indefinite leave" as of today because of it.

At least that's what I've seen/heard. I've only seen the first video in question and read the articles on soompi, as I don't understand Korean I unfortunately can't read any of their own news coverage on it.

Required fields are marked *

As I was reading about the story, the thing that shocked me most was learning that SNLK/tvN released the footage themselves and that it was not leaked by a concerned third party/staff member.

Not only was there sexual harassment on the set of your show, but you thought it was a joke? And you posted it online for people to presumably laugh at??

I am so baffled and disgusted. There's certainly a double-standard at play here. The idea that men cannot be sexually assaulted by women (because they always want sex/sexual contact with them) is probably why they thought this was an okay "joke," but that false narrative is so destructive to attempts to raise cultural awareness of sexual assault and immensely discouraging to male victims, especially those whose predators are women.

This simply would not be done to female guests by male comedians (and it should not be), and I'm sure that each staff/cast member who participated in this would be disgusted by such a proposal. Or maybe they wouldn't because wow. They thought this was such good fun.

Again, baffled and disgusted that SNLK/tvN would think this was okay.

Well said!

It always makes me sad how male victims are treated and how small a percentage actually dare speak up. All this should have serious consequences, but so far all of the perpetrators/enablers seem to take it so lightly.

Something that really baffles me is that they actually did what they did. As in, aren't they embarassed to do something like that? I mean, running up to a stranger, or well, anybody for that matter, and randomly grabbing their business is completely unimaginable for me. It's such a weird and boundary-crossing thing to do, how could they not even be shy about it? Who tf came up with that idea? It's so clearly wrong in every way that I feel there must be something really wrong with the people involved to make them able to do that.

Thanks for the link ^^ He's got a very pleasant voice.

I don't generally listen to their style of music, as I'm more into rock and indie etc, but I LOVE them in variety. Saw Sunggyu in the Exciting India show, it was such a fun show. And their recent appearance on Knowing Brothers was golden!

I did see one of their recent comeback performances on Music Bank though and wow, they can actually sing live! I was thoroughly impressed as a lot of Kpop groups will sound let's just say less than perfect during live performances lol. Often they have one, maybe two decent singers if they're lucky and the rest will sound off. 2PM was in the same ep and it sounded so bad 90% of the time, which is a shame as I rather like some of their songs and they're an even older group than Infinite so I'd hoped they'd be well-trained vocally by now.

I've been trying to get more into Kpop-pop recently, are there any of Infinite's songs you can recommend for someone whose preferred genre isn't pop? I listen to every genre, but a lot of pop songs end up sounding the same to me. I do like stuff with a really good beat like Shinee's View, ballads/singer-songwriter style songs, more ehhhh.... mature... concepts like History and 2PM lol and the more hiphop/rap inspired stuff though.

That aside, in general this is really cool song, time to check out some more Double K and Dok2 methinks!
South Korean hiphop and rap is just the best, it's all rhythm and beats but with so much melody and more sensibility compared to American hiphop. Kind of like Just Jack (British hiphop artist, not the guy from will&grace lol) and I absolutely love it.

Also, just realized... Ziggie... Ziggy Stardust? So gonna call him Ziggie with a z from now on kkkkk. My Bowie feels be likin' it!

Hi all,

Not related to dramas at all but how did any of you cope when moving to a new country? I have made some friends here but they are introverts while i am an extrovert. Getting them to go out can be a bit of trouble. Also, our interests differ quite a bit. Im more of an active person while they are not. I dont really understand how people could just stay at home for the 3 months break from uni we are having currently, I suppose.

On a side note, I can't wait till Goblin starts so I have sth to distract me from the boredom!

first, big hug to you from me, I also had lots of trouble adjusting to a new place (I had moved to Sydney).

I went out and found things to do like I signed up for Korean language classes and found lots of likeminded friends who also were crazy over dramas. Went out with them to eat Korean food too!

I also watched tons of dramas.
Spent alot of time on Dramabeans.

If you are active/sports person then I suggest you look for groups that meet up to do things like runs or walks- my husband runs marathons so he joined a running group once in a while for their runs.

hope this helps! <3

Good morning, beanies! I have mixed feelings about real life at the moment, with only a few weeks left of my first college semester (and my first finals!) On the one hand, yay I get to go home and see my family and not pay for groceries myself and I can stop pretending to be an adult for a few weeks. On the other hand, college has been super fun and I've learned so much both in my classes and out. I don't want this to end... can't I just keep learning forever?

The Man Living in Our House: I really liked what LollyPip said in the most recent recap--that the show, while still amazing, has clearly switched genres from rom-com to something a bit more melo. That's totally fine, I love it, but I'm super ready for them to both agree to love each other again. Hopefully his bump on the head fascilitates that, and not a coma.

Legend of the Blue Sea: This show. Is so ridiculous. But I love it anyway, and I really like Lee Min Ho in it. I haven't been his biggest fan to this point, so that's nice. My heart nearly broke when she offered to erase the woman's memories of her daughter, and then I was on pins and needles thinking she'd just go ahead and do it. Do you think she can restore memories, too?

Shopping King Louis: I started this one because I'd heard so many good things, and I have been happily surprised since my first impression. It's still not totally my cup of tea (I'm on episode... somewhere around 8, Louis had better start seriously pulling his weight soon or I will be upset) but I do think they're so super cute together. I want a kiss!

Romantic Doctor, Teacher Kim: I figured out how to remember the name now! He's the romantic ideal doctor, named teacher Kim. That makes sense. I have polar views of this week's episodes: I thought the first was ridiculous and had lost it's tone. But I absolutely loved the second, and it's discussion of the hippocratic oath, which I might have missed had I not read @michykdramas awesome post. It's that good, I'm posting a link:
https://mydramalesslife.wordpress.com/2016/12/02/romantic-doctor-teacher-kim-episode-7-8-inspiring-deep-thoughts/

When a Snail Falls in Love: I haven't been able to watch all of this week's episodes yet, because... all the dramas above have taken up my time. Today I'm watching them, and I'm excited! Did they only put up two this week? Is it really only going to be 21 episodes .5 hours each? That's not enough!

Sherlock: Well that was quite something. I just watched the Christmas Special from last year for the first time and... I think Sherlock is shifting gears. Much less episodic, much more character development. Which I love, both of them... if only we got more than three episodes per 3 years.

I'm running up against the limit, so I'm off to get ready and go to class--Happy Friday! Happy Weekend! This is my new life theme song, watch it!

Happy Friday! I can't believe I am excited for December (the time I feel sad for another year passing by) because of new shows. And JTBC has some new promising shows.
JTBC had 5 year anniversary on December 1st. This cable station earned its reputation with variety shows on front and news programs at the back, but it also produced well-made dramas in between. There were interviews with main figures who contributed in each division (variety, drama, news, commentary, sports) and one of them was with division director Kim Suk-yoon(52) who currently works as PD for the drama 'This week my wife has an affair'(TWMWHAA). [Jung Ang Daily] He joined JTBC when it was established in 2011 (used to work in KBS). Even though Kim is a director in variety division, he also works as drama PD and movie director.
Q: What do you think drama's current status in JTBC?
A: We have tried to make high-quality dramas. Comparing to other genres, drama production system takes long time to setup. I think during last five years JTBC has given favorable impression to the viewers and people related in this business, having shown dramas in various genres.
Q: Is there anything you emphasize to your juniors?
A: JTBC provides supports without limitation in drama production(contents), so there are benefits that they can have various ideas as creators.
Q: If you can pick a drama which had great results this year?
A: 'Age of Youth'. Even though it was 12 episodes show, it gained lots of empathy dealing with a topic which is hard to air in other channels.
Q: Who is the actor/actress stand out the most this year in JTBC dramas?
A: Casts in AOY - Han Ye-ri, Ryu Hwa-young, Pack Eun-bin, and Park Hae-soo, I think. Even though they are young, they acted immersed in their roles and showed impressive acting.
Q: Currently airing TWMWWHAA also has good feedback.
A: Because of current country situation, it is somewhat hard to say anything. But the show has more fun episodes coming. Because of the relation which you can't say Black and White clearly, there will be a situation you'd feel conflicted. The story questioning if only divorce is the answer for Lee- Song couple will be unraveled.
Q: How about your satisfaction with actors?
A: Very much. Actors/actresses are acting completely immersed in their roles. Even though we read the scripts together, we discuss and act according to the each situation. Even though this is the story of Lee-Song couple and something hard to generalize to judge, I hope this gives an opportunity to reflect our own.

Q: What do you think drama direction should be, considering current drama market situation?
A: Since there are numerous ways in viewing patterns as medium became diversed, contents targeting a specific platform should be produced aggressively as well, in addition to contents which fit to all platforms.
Q: Drama lineup for next year -Solomon’s Perjury, Strong Woman Do Bong-soon, The package, Man to Man- was introduced already.
A: Next year is when we start to show dramas we have been preparing for a while. I hope you can see the outcome of JTBC drama infrastructure we have been building so far.

JTBC drama with best ratings:
1. Childless comfort (13.11%)
2. Secret affair (6.61%)
3. Maids (5.71%)
4. Cruel palace (5.48%)
5. First born (5.16%)
btw 'Secret Affair'(with Kim Hee-ae and Yoo Ah-in) which aired 2 years ago is called as 'Prediction drama' now because many situation in this drama is similar to current political scandal 'Choi Soon-sil Gate' engulfing Korea.

Here is another interview with CP(Chief Producer only given to a person with 10+ years of PD experience) Song Won-seop of JTBC.[OSEN]
Q: You are JTBC foundation member. What do you think? How drama(division) grew up/changed in JTBC?
A: I feel like seeing a baby who only was able to move his eyes walking, running and even reading Korean and English. I feel proud that the people who looked down on us give approval on our potential and even feel threatened now.
Even in the beginning the quality of our dramas was as good as any. The fact that JTBC didn't give up on drama making in difficult environments has big meaning itself, and I think it went through growing pains and process searching for dramas fitting to JTBC and this time and age of Korea.
Q: Which drama do you remember the most?
A: I have to say the best drama was 'Secret Affair'. Also there were first drama 'Padam padam', 'Cruel palace' which showed we could make this scale of show even though we are not public stations, 'Ms Temper' which showed broadcaster's responsibility toward women and society, and 'Age of youth' which received the feedback 'A show only JTBC can make'.

Q: Currently 'Secret Affair' is receiving new spotlight (due to political scandal). Are you going to air re-run?
A: I have to discuss with the scheduling team.
Q: Which drama can be called your sore finger?
A: I am so disappointed that 'D-Day' which we targeted for being Korea's first blockbuster wasn't realized as intended with the big concept in the planning stage. I think many people who thought 'Wow I have to watch the show' when they watched the preview where NamSan tower collapsed will agree with me.

Q:What are the feedback/comments you want to hear the most or remember the most about JTBC drama?
A: The saddest comment I hear is "If they aired this in a public station, it would have over 20% ratings." I know it has well meaning, but I am even more sad because I hear too many times. The word I want to hear is "Why all the interesting ones are JTBC dramas?"

Q: JTBC drama did excellent job in finding new actors. Is there a standard picking actors? (for instance, 'Can we marry' and 'Age of Youth' casts)
A: Finding hidden treasure is planning and production team's happiness and worthwhile task. (Did you hear- 'While you are sleeping' Team??)
Q: Awl, Yoona's street, Ms Temper, etc JTBC dramas reflected the time and showed full of humanism. Is there a direction JTBC drama pursue?
A: I think every drama should have that age's self-reflection underneath.
Q: What is the reason you make 12 episodes drama like AOY, TWMWHAA, Solomon's Perjury?
A: Rather than having any specific reason, I see it focuses on raising the quality. There are various patterns- Korea has 16 episodes as standard, England has 6 eps, Japan has 8-11 eps. But rather than giving meaning on number 16, I want to focus on making better dramas.
Q: What is the plan for JTBC drama next year?
A: I think viewers can watch 1-2 well-made genre drama soon.
Q: Is there a concern for JTBC drama?
A: Agonizing and searching what drama fits to JTBC best and only JTBC can make will continue. Of course we keep worrying about 'Hallyu which can continue' which is common apprehension for all Korean dramas.

JTBC fighting! Please give us lots of great dramas~

JTBC does indeed make shows that others can't or won't. I hope they get more recognition and ratings for their better shows.

I am surprised that it's only 5 years old because in that case compared to TvN, I think JTBC has more recognition which just turned 10.

JTBC the best. I heard a lot about TVN but whatever i have seen, TVN nowhere comes near JTBC.

The best comment Age of Youth could provide JTBC.

While watching Kdramas always though where are the thieves? Then i came across Yoona's Street and found something realistic. This is what i wanted to see and JTBC didn't shy away from showing it.

I tuned into JTBC because of Shinhwa's Broadcast. Never knew they were a new channel then! Right now, I've been watching snippets of JTBC's "abnormal summit" on YouTube. It's really interesting to see the foreign cast members discuss topics in a language that's not their own. I can barely articulate my ideas coherently in English or my 2nd language (Singapore's compulsory bilingual system). One recent episode that caught my attention was the cast debating about how to deal with the aftermath of a cheating spouse; in relation to their currently airing drama with SJH and LSK. Alas, it was a short teaser clip.... :( does anyone know where one can watch eng subs of "abnormal summit"?

I'm a regular Abnormal Summit viewer. I think it's a great show where they have sometimes fluffy but sometimes very serious issues that they discuss. Anyway, you can watch English subbed episodes on ondemandkorea, it's free. New episodes every Monday, and they're usually subbed by Wednesday evening (Eastern time).

Thank you so much fan <3.

I've loved jTBC from the get go. Most of my favorites are jTBC shows. I was very impressed that they even produced 2 of my favorite sageuks in an epic scale only seen in the golden era.
I don't know how in the heck they got Jung Ha-yeon to write Cruel Palace and Queen In-soo for a new cable channel but I'm so grateful for that. I get to watch his last work in a well deserving station.

Yes, looking forward to more quality dramas from jTBC. Please don't let go of your writers and directors (An Pan-seok <3) keep looking for new and under-rated actors and give them opportunities to shine.

Rock on jTBC!

Thank you for translating this for us. I am enjoying immensely TWMWWHA and its high production value. Is there plan to have an award show like TvN recently did for its 10th year anniversary?

I didn't see any award show. They just have various events with viewers, dramas' main actors/actresses special appearance in magazine, and I read they will rerun "Padam Padam" (Jung Woo-sung and Han Ji-min) for the occasion.

It's already December! Where does the time go?
Aaagh, I've been buying more Korean and Japanese skin care and cosmetics stuff again. My friend is going to Japan which I'm super jealous over!

Started watching Jimi ni sugoi, not a huge Ishihara Satomi fan but I love her wardrobe and style on that show. Also Suda Masaki is it it.

Finally continuing Kuroi 10-nin no onna, I couldn't believe how many mistresses started popping up. And the hilarious catfight on one ep.

Cold case, still good and looking forward to the rest of the episodes.
Also saw a adorable feel good Japanese movie Kidnap tour, where in a way a dead beat dad with the heart in the right place"kidnaps" his adorable 10 year old daughter. Tsumabuki Satoshi doesn't age at all.
Hah, saw pics of Horikita Maki's younger sister, seriously they are twins. (Marina Nana, Maki'a real name in Hara Marina)

'Romantic doctor Master Kim' reached 20% ratings in last episode (ep 8), and they say some credit goes to Lee Chul-min's acting (who played rape victim's husband). Lee Chul-min(46) has done 5 projects in 2016 alone (Romantic doctor, The K2, Mrs. Cop2, Imjin War 1592, Neighborhood hero). Lee has played mostly villain role, but in RD, he played the husband of a rape victim and received very favorable response. He had a short interview after the airing.[OSEN]
Q: You acting yesterday had great response. What do you think?
A: The filming ended very late last night, so I was shocked to see the feedback this morning. Of course I am so happy.
This is the first time I had such great response for my acting, you see. There were so many articles and many people contacted me. I was very embarrassed- people show interests and praise me all of sudden, and ratings went up. What did I do? I was just lucky to be able to join the drama which is fun and touching.
Q: Your character had sad story, and it must've been different from your role in Imjin War (KBS1).
A: I was a charge officer in turtle ship in Imjin War who loved his family, so I think both roles are same being a family man. In my case, I have both grown child and 5 year old, so I think that helped me playing this role. This incident actually happened in this country and still occurs, you see. Fortunately I have not experienced such situation, so I can't understand the victim 100%, but I acted thinking what I would do as a father in such situation.
Q: It was scary situation in the show, but how was real atmosphere on the set?
A: Very good. PD Yoo In-sik and filming directors, staffs are nice people. Atmosphere on the set was great.

Q: How was working with Seo Hyun-jin who was your hostage in the show?
A: I felt sorry. To the viewers, it was only 10-20 minutes scene in the beginning, but the filming was incredibly long and Seo Hyun-jin ssi must have had hard time because she had her shoulder grabbed by me all day long. I saw her for the first time during this shooting, but I could understand why she receives so much love. Even though she has much less acting experience than me and much junior, there were many things I could learn from her. During the filming she never looked uncomfortable, and she even worried about me. In my last scene where I said "I am sorry and thank you, Doctor unni", there was no 'Thank you' in the script, but I said what I felt from bottom of my heart.

Q: How was it like acting with Han Suk-kyu and Yoo Yeon-suk?
A: I saw Han Suk-kyu sunbae-nim on the set for the first time. Even though I have worked in this business for a long time, I have never been in the same drama with him. So when I got the offer I was so happy thinking "Finally I can act with him". It was a role I felt honored and heart fluttering. On the other hand, I was worried. "This is such popular drama, so what if I cause any damage? What if I become diappointments to Han Suk-kyu sunbae-nim?" But when he saw me first day, he said "You are Chul-min yi" so I was so thankful. He said "We can wait for you so act comfortably without feeling pressured." before shooting began. I was so moved when sunbae whom I love said that. Even when we were shooting, he helped with my lines and eye stares standing behind the camera. I can rest when my scene ends, but sunbae-nim keeps filming so he must have been tired, but he didn't show it saying "I should do it." I also met Yoo Yeon-suk ssi for the first time, and he was polite and sincere unlike young people these days. Because everyone treated me so comfortably, I wanted to stay until the end if I could even if I don't get paid.

Q: Don't you feel disappointed because you keep getting villain roles?
A: Not at all. Even though I only appear for a short time, the reason they keep asking me for a villain role is because they approve me playing a villain role, so I am thankful. I've never thought "Villain role again?". Also this time it was a role which had twist. I think director-nim also had lots of worry because this was the first time I did such emotional scene even though I played many villain roles before. Still he supported and left it to me, so I am thankful.
Q: Is there any role you want to challenge?
A: I have done many roles so far. Even though many people remember me as villain characters, I've actually played eunuch, general and politician. So rather than wanting to do a certain role, I want to play a role which can show honest emotion like yesterday doing my best to relay the sincere mind.

I started to remember this actor from Liar Game (he was also a gengster) but I must say, his short appearance in this week's episode left a very good impression. He was so into his character, and I think he deserves the praises. This is what true actor do, regardless how small the role, he is doing it perfectly.

I wonder who beanies will pick if we have votes on our favorite actor now -I assume it will be one among Lee Jun-ki, Park Bo-geum, Seo In-gook, Ji Chang-wook, Lee Jong-suk, Jo Jung-suk, Lee Min-ho??

Anyway I am sure you read Seo In-gook interview somewhere, but here is another one.
[OSEN] In production press conference of 'Shopping King Louis', Seo said he wanted to become a dog. About that comment, he said "Whoever reads the script, they will have a feeling that Louis is like a puppy. He is not a type who does aegyo all the time, but a type who is honest with his feelings. While acting Louis, I got lots of help watching pictures and video clips of cute puppy and kitty uploaded in SNS. For the scene I lied on Hwang Geum-ja ajumma's lap acting cute, I imagined the behavior of a puppy."
He said he had hard time feeling embarrased acting Louis. "This was the first project I tried to look cute, so while playing Louis, I fought a lot with myself. My personality is very different from Louis. Also I started filiming only one week after 'Police Unit 38' , so it was difficult to get adjusted in the beginning."

What charm did he see in the SKL? "In the show, Louis was 25 years old. I didn't think I could play a role in this age group unless it's now. Even though the topic included chaebol and memory loss, the theme had a setup which had never been dealt with before."
He showed good chemistry with all his partner actresses and gained the nick 'Kissing expert'. "That is so embarassing. It is complement meaning I did well, but the comment is embarassing. The Kiss scene is flower of the drama, so I don't think there is a concept 'Did good'. I think it was just filmed beautifully."
He has been busy in 2016. Started working as singer in March, Seo worked on PU38, Law of Jungle, and SKL. "If I evaluate 2016, I'd like to give good score. I've really worked hard. I'd like to give myself 90 out of 100 to complement myself."

Seo debuted in the program 'Superstar K' as singer, and his first acting was KBS's Love Rain in 2012. "There were many difficulties doing singing activities after I debuted. Right before I felt like I was going to burst hurting inside, I got to do the 'Love Rain'. I couldn't speak Seoul accent when I first started, so I told PD-nim that I prepared Pusan saturi and acted with it, and he loved it. When I did acting in front of camera, I felt emotional even with small, no meaningful lines. I thought I was doing something and getting complements, so I became to enjoy acting. But acting became more and more difficult and there are times I feel stressful. When I first started acting, I just hoped I didn't do 'Foot acting'. But now I am really happy when the viewers understand the part that I want to express. I like to bring out a delicate feeling which does not show outwardly- like I'd like to make people feel sad watching a scene where the situation is sad, but not expressed obviously."

Police Unit 38 has special meaning for him. "When I watch my acting, the one I feel the most proud is PU38. It is thanks to Hwang Dong-hwa director-nim. Until that time, I couldn't act the way I wished and looked for. I was acting based on the answer I decided/chose. After I met director-nim, that idea disappeared. He said "Because what you express is small, you might hear you can't act well, but just trust and follow me." Since then I kept open-minded, and acted as my heart led. I can say that was the turning point in my acting life."

Seo wants to keep working as singer too. "My heart still pounds whenever I watch 'Superstar K', because I know exactly how those people feel. SSK is not challenge, but desparation. I feel so nervous wordering if any participant makes a mistake. When someone makes a mistake and cries, I also tear up." Singer and actor both are important career for him. "Being an actor rather than a singer is only the image shown outside. Both are occupations I love, and it is hard to decide the weight of them. If an album is produced while I work on a project, it will hurt the project. I want to show Seo In-gook with an album very much, but because I was so busy in 2016, time went by unexpectantly."

Does he have any dating plan? "I always want to date. But strangely when I do acting in a romcom, I don't feel like dating in real life. My ideal type is a person like Go Bok-sil. Actually Louis only looked at Go Bok-sil, not the other way. I want to meet such person. Understanding everything about the other peron and trying to understand that person as himself is really attractive."
What could be future he dreams of? "I want to be shown as the character I portray when I work on a project. I always prepare hard to become that character. Also as a singer, I want to be a singer who can tell stories many people can feel relatable."

Seo In-gook fighting! Whatever you do, please don't disappear from dramaland. I am still waiting for Jung Eun-ji to show up in a drama :(

Ah thank you so so much for translating.. I caught some snippets from another translated interview on instagram but this is gold! Seo In Guk comes across as a very intelligent actor from his interviews. It is clear that he puts a lot of thought into elevating the character from beyond the pages of the script. He literally "lives" the character!

Did he not say anything about his army enlistment? I am dreading the day when he leaves!

In another interview, Seo mentioned about his army duty. "I will go when I receive the notice, and I think it will be next year. I am waiting for it thinking I have to go anyway. I have an expectation about my face(how experience is reflected) after the army duty. There is power given to this age group looking like having own story even without doing anything. I have a final exam this coming Friday but I keep procrastinating my revision. Studying part time is soooo hard, because you're on your own, without a study group to encourage you on and I have zero self discipline. But then again, I keep reminding myself that I am a smart girl (I was, in high school) but I've failed my exams in the past so I don't know where all this confidence came from heh. Like I keep talking to myself "You can do this, remember that time you had straight passes for 5 years in high school? Yea." But high school is definitely not college, and I need to pass and find work to support my hobby of travelling lol.

Anyways, it's been raining a lot these days, sometimes twice in a day, accompanied by thunder. I love it. I just love the rain. I hope everybody stay safe and healthy, bye~ (actually downloading 3MAD episode 8 instead of doing my revision OTL)

p/s: I watched Radio Star with Sechkies recently and they were hilarious. Fights broke out and the 4D Jaejin is being his usual weird self, they even put a background of the universe whenever it's his turn to speak, so that everybody is clear that Jaejin is not a creature from the planet Earth XD

I often find Radio Star a bit boring, but Sechskies were hilarious! Jaejin and Jiwon are my absolute faves and how is it that Sung Hoon still looks about 28??

I actually mentioned this in my post above, but what is it with idols named Lee Jaejin? It's like the name dictates weirdness lol. When FT Island were on Weekly Idol last time, their bassist (the other LJJ) was totally off in his own world, suddenly leaving the screen to go get cookies from the waiting room and all sorts of stuff lol.
The screen they put behind Jaejin in RS was hilarious, made me crack up every time. It was so adorable how he didn't want young people to love him, because they couldn't love-love him since he's too old kkkkk.

Good luck on your exam! I've got a while until mine comes up, but already nervous about failing. I can really relate to encouraging yourself with how well you did in high school lol! Hwaiting!

Can we just talk about cinematography this year? I am so so impressed with the way certain dramas have been shot- particularly Signal and Reply 1988. And when I started watching Goblin (just the first five mins to have a look), it was just so freaking gorgeous- like a movie.

Moonlight also had pretty cinematography, although I somehow prefer more 'moody' styles. I wish more series/ TV stations step up on this bit- because it somehow elevates the whole drama experience.

Freaking gorgeous. Ok. I'll give Goblin a try then! Lobster is looking great too, especially the Joseon bits. It does look like a movie.

I have noticed that colours have been more on the pastel rather than bright side recently. Examples: DOTS, Doctors, Moon Lovers... Which reminds me, Moon Lovers had some gorgeous cinematography, when it wasn't too busy doing close ups that is.

You should definitely try Goblin! The first scene, itself caught my eye so amazingly- the entire background is grey, and only the two characters on screen are highlighted, mainly in reds. LOBS is also very cutely done, agreed on the Joseph part.

I think many of the modern dramas are adopting pastel tones- even Shopping King Louie was the same. I think the more movie-like ambience adds a lot of feel to the dramas.

I think Lobster cinematography is totally awesome, Moon Lovers is good at landscape but that just it, lot of scene come off as empty imo.

Haven't seen Signal but I know the pd of Misaeng would have done a great job.
Alongside cinematography ( I wonder what cameras and other technology are they using I would definitely like to buy them) I would also credit the editing and after effects like those in JI and W.

Ooh, I forgot about Misaeng! That show too, it felt so great- the light colours and the slight dullness showed how humdrum and regular office life is. I have noticed that TvN shows tend to do nice cinematography.

I adored the manhwa bits in W as well, very imaginative!

Yes, the drama is so pretty! And like you, I'm also adjusting to KGE's acting. In fact, somehow that character itself didn't charm me. Everyone else was so cool and mysterious, but her character felt so average. It would have been nice to have a slightly darker, more complex character than the simple spunky ghost seeing schoolgirl.

I somehow wish we had Kim So Hyun or Kim Yoo Jung in this role- I somehow feel they would have done a much more nuanced job.

Give KGE chance first because it was only first episode. I was skeptical with her role as high schooler (not her acting) and still do but I'll give her chance. C'mon we already saw too much of KYJ and KSH and I don't think these two the only talented young actresses, let's give other actress to appear and shine in our screen as well. :)

reply

Required fields are marked *

Agreed. KYJ and KSH are not the only two young actresses in Korea. I personally don't think either of them are that good, that they'd provide any more nuance than KGE is capable of.

Honestly, while they're both talented, I couldn't see either of them acting opposite Gong Yoo in a million years. He's way too mature for them. It's bad enough KGE is playing a high school girl, Gong Yoo doesn't need to have a loveline with an actual high school girl.

If you like moody cinematography you should give The Good Wife a go and since you like both moody and Signal, have you tried Pied Piper or Task Force 38?

There really has been some amazing cinematography this year! Both on the stylish, moody front and on the upbeat, colorful front (for instance, one good thing about Lucky Romance were the lush colors). Also a lot of experimenting, so every drama seemed to have its own style. From pastelly, to almost completely dark, the only thing missing seems to be sepia and b&w filters.

Happy Friday all!

Our Gap Soon was really good last week. I'm starting to find a theme in it about living for yourself, not others, and not doing things just to look good to others. I think it's a very relevant message in the modern world, where people care too much about what others think about their life choices, and end up sacrificing their own happiness.

The episode last Friday also had some moving moments.

- When Se Gye's father-in-law empathized with his decision to quit and helped him get started with a part time gig at the store. When his wife Gong Joo called him in the car
- When Da Hae said for the sake of the girls she was not going to see them again and asked Geum Sik to bring Jae Soon back

And can I say that I'm also sort of liking the bratty rich kid and Gap Soon? He was a huge jerk in the beginning, but since he got humbled he's been pretty consistent at her side, and he seems to accept her as she is, including her cleaning job. Gap Dol on the other hand continues to a total piece of crap. He's not able to stand up to his mom and had been jerking Gap Soon around this entire series.

Also Geum Sik losing his job and Jae Soon's ex-husband getting out of prison should make things very interesting.

If Our Gabsoon continues its pace, in no time they could reach 20% rating.

Like you, I like the chaebol kid too. But something missing between him and Gabsoon just like what GS said to him last week. While he is supportive, he might not be able to understand the difficulties that GS had went through in her life. I am hoping they will be able to maintain their friendship, at the very least. As for Gabdol, I just don't like everything about him. But I can understand that whatever his decision will be, he still want to give priority on his mom. He needs to work harder in order to convince us that he is worth for Gabsoon, because I still have a bitter feeling about him - especially during 10 years in relationship.

I don't think Jae Soon will divorce her current husband , maybe. Especially after looking at the preview. GS's Omma appa keeps breaking my heart. I want Se Gye to find his happiness, and looks like Gong Joo also cares about him a lot.

Have you watched the preview for epi 28, BTW?

Yes I am rooting for the friendship. What GS wants at this moment someone who can understand and support her, and that person is that chaebol guy. Not someone like GD who keeps pressuring her on marriage.

I want to use this opportunity to vent a little. For some time now, I've been using both DramaFever and Viki to watch my shows. I sometimes get annoyed with people who post on DramaFever for a few reasons: they give shows low ratings because the subs aren't up as quickly in their language as english is apparently the first to go up or the show hasn't been uploaded early the same day it aired; they don't read the episode descriptions to figure out air dates/channel/episode run etc. Up until now, the shows I've been watching on Viki have already aired/finished their run. Now I'm watching Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Ju (WFKBJ) and I've found myself guilty of the first annoyance I have over on DramaFever. I fully concede that makes me a hypocrite, but, it's Friday and Viki shows that episode 6 is 67% translated. If I weren't paying for the pass, I would not be as annoyed but why would you bid to get the exclusive rights to the show and not show greater alacrity as a company. Sure, I understand that these are volunteers who do the subs and that is your business model, but again, why get the exclusive rights? I know I can go on other websites, but I like supporting the global drama community in this modest way. I really don't want to go on the episode now to see exactly how much has been translated because I don't want my viewing experience to be spoiled. Argh!

and I'd like to take this chance to hop on here with some hate for dramafever's new Roku format:YUCK. I can't stand it, it's unnecessarily cluttered looking, hard to work with, slow, and the opposite of user-friendly. In general, a frustrating mess. I'm speaking for my best friend too, so there are at least two of us who feel this way. I get that it's sort of cooler looking but it's a downgrade for usage.

Plus, if you watch DramaFever on ROKU (and I do) you can't rewatch any episodes. There is no asterisk button to choose, "do you want to start where you left off, or do you want to watch from the beginning.") I really wanted to watch an old show again, but if I do, I have to manually hold down the back button until it starts again. And then, (often) the sound doesn't sync. I wrote DramaFever twice. But they say they've got so many complaints right now they can't respond. DramaFever has gone DOWNHILL since they were bought out by Warner Bros. (And since they fired me as a cartoon contributor--but that's another story.)

I've heard of the DramaFever Roku app woes on the DF website. Hopefully they will address this soon. I use the PS4 app which works ok. The only problem with it is that it sometimes restarts an episode that is already playing, by itself, which gets very frustrating. Another weird thing about DF is that they sometimes don't update new episodes at the same time across all platforms. The web player would say that the episode is not yet available when it's actually available on the PS4 app or hidden on the web player--the latter is really weird.

I wish Viki has a PS4 app though. I might have to get a Roku just for that.

Same here! I subscribe to both Viki & DF. Viki's sluggish subbing is a downer, but I find even watching other shows while I wait is starting to bother me. DF's new format on Roku is quite similar to its set-up on PS4. I hope they do a patch to fix the issue with having to rewind through an entire episode to rewatch it. I miss being able to use my * button! Gee, First World problems I'm having, lol! ?

Speaking of Viki and DramaFever TV apps....last year I got a 4th gen Apple TV for Christmas. I haven't disconnected the Roku yet, because there are a couple of things not yet on Apple TV. But in general, I'm very happy with the switch.

I don't understand, though, why Viki does not update their "featured" listing at the top of their Apple TV app. Unlike their own iOS app, and Dramafever's Apple TV app, the featured feed includes shows that aired months ago.

The other issue I have is that for some reason, Viki (both on Apple TV and my iPad) auto-starts DotS episode 1 whenever there's not an additional episode of the drama I just watched. I've tried clearing out my history...and DotS is not selected as one of my favorites. I'm so sick of seeing the opening scenes of DotS before I manage to exit the video!

I'm used to viki auto-starting me on a popular drama occasionally, but also sometimes taking to me to a drama starring an actor from the episode I just finished or to one of my old favorites. But lately? It has been DotS every single freakin' time and I'm starting to resent the show, tbh. I actually got excited the other day when finishing the last episode of The King 2 Hearts actually led me to the first episode of Gu Family Book. And allll just because it wasn't DotS.

0

Ha! For you it's DotS, for me it's OMV! Viki keeps playing OMV after the most recent episodes of anything I'm watching.

I'm not as morally upright so I do go to the other websites to watch because the subs are faster, but I bought the viki pass because I like to view it again on viki when its been subbed. I get your frustration. Imo viki subs are a bit better so I wish I was patient enough to wait to view it on viki for the first round. Its a peeve of mine when a character says for example "hyung" and subbers translate that as "character name" which takes away the intimacy of calling someone brother - the faster subs did this for WLFKBJ and took me out of the experience to be annoyed for a bit.

Required fields are marked *

At this point, I might use those other websites more frequently. lol. There are a ton of shows--especially J-Dramas--they have that Viki and DF don't, in addition to my sub issue.

I definitely hear you on the loss in connotation from using names instead of using words like "hyung." DF does this sometimes as well. Thankfully I've watched enough now to tell sometimes.

Two things I really love about Viki are the viewer/fan commentary, and they have shows like Addicted/Heroin which DF doesn't. I wish they had more shows like the latter. The former can be an annoyance though when the show is very popular and there's a flood of comments/spoilers. Does anyone know if the commentary is available in the Roku app?

Yes! I also love the commentary option of viki! Tbh if i want to watch smth I try to see if it is on viki first because of that. Some comments can be annoying but some definitely adds to the experience and feels like I'm not fangirling alone at certain moments. Jdramas sadly cannot usually be found except in these other sites.

Isn't the slow subbing of WFKBJ on viki aggravating? I don't normally complain, because I know they're volunteers, but LoBS was subbed at 100% the same day the episode aired. I'm so jealous! Just jealous.

I can only imagine if this was a show like 1% of Something, it might have taken days. I guess there is a correlation between ratings/popularity and the speed with which they get the subs done. LoBS had a lot of hype/interest going in. Regardless, even if the show is ridiculously popular or not, WFKBJ is a Viki exclusive, so you would think they would treat it with due consideration.

I know this is unrelated and personal but as of yesterday I've finally reached a healthy weight after more than a year of suffering from my eating disorder! I am so happy because it means I'll be able to enjoy Christmas and I might get the all clear to start playing soccer again by January!

Anyways, on the drama front I am watching:
This Week My Wife... I love this show! It's not perfect but it is so much fun and different. I am going to miss it when it ends this weekend, especially my precious Ahn Joonyoung and Kwon Boyoung <3 I really don't know what to expect for the final but hopefully it won't disappoint. JTBC really hit it out of the park for me this year.

Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim The episodes always just fly by. I have a thing for medical dramas and for Yoo Yeonsuk so I have no complaint here. Except I hope the drama will return to it's more character driven aspect instead of going full out hospital politics...

Adolescence Medley This drama is cute. I did not recognize Kwak Dongyeon at first as being Byungyeon in MDBC. He's such an adorable dork in this. The premise of the first episode reminded me so much of that Disney movie Max Keeble's Big Move lol Now that took me back.

I am also watching the Jdrama Siren and can I just say that I don't know whether the character of Kara is badass or creepy...maybe both.

Finally I was so happy to find out that Train to Busan will be release on DVD in my country around my birthday!

The Japanese movie "kohaku" aka confession, came to mind. I know it's not a drama but the premise really intrigued me! It centred around the main character's quest for revenge after one of her students murdered her baby Daughter. We don't find out which of her student did it until the end. It was so chilling how the perpetrator was not remorseful at all and even taunted the main character. How the teacher knew the identity of the killer but couldn't do anything to obtain justice and closure because of the way Japanese law protected minors. The movie also gave background stories of the suspect students. Giving light to the prevailing problem of lack of parental love and support or conversely, mollycoddling.

So many topics to discuss from that short movie:
- are the problems that plagued the Japanese society partly due to the rigidity of it and the crazy work culture?
- Absolutely anyone is capable of committing heinous acts regardless of age. If so, should the laws punish them accordingly?
- nature vs nurture. Are we inherently good but life experiences make us evil?

So chilling, so thought provoking. The cinematography is breathtaking as well. Remains as my favourite jap movie.

This movie then led me to read up about Japanese laws which directed me to the horrific rape and murder case of Junko Furuta... left me with sleepless nights and frustration with the ugliness of fellow human beings

Hello, all:

Not much going on in these parts. My birthday is next week. I'll be 57 and each year seems to go by so quickly now. They say that happens when you get older. The days grow longer, the years grow shorter. Still healing up but doing way better than last week. They never told me that one of the byproducts of surgery --esp of uterine surgery-- is extreme fatigue. The days have been one continual slog. The biggest joy in my life has been Westworld, some great kdramas, games I've been playing on my kindle. Oh well.

Dramas:

Night Light -- Who knew I was jonesing for a makjang? It's kinda K2 lite, which makes me think this might be one of those seasons (like the season of multiple personalities a while back) where we have all these shows about powerful women fighting to hold power and coercing some "helper" into siding with her. Two strong women, so that's good.

Our Gab Soon -- Wow, did I say makjang? This is the makjangiest of them all. We're at the point where every character has some oppressive sorrow. I really like this but wow, the misunderstandings and missing (people/sons) trope is stressing me out. I so dislike stories of children lost or given up back in the day but I guess this is a Korean thing...some psychic national wound (dating back to the day when one of Koreas many exports were orphans or near-orphans) whose scab always has to be scratched or played with.

Legend of Blue Sea: I forgot what turned me off this. The lost son, the lost empire trope maybe. Will see if I can get back into it.

Wasn't feeling Weightlifting Fairy because I wanted our weightlifting girl to be chubbier. I guess I have to give up on Korean dramas actually treating some overweight girl like a human being or giving her the lead role. But eh, I can watch this if I have to.

Gonna try to see Goblin.

Should I watch "I'll take care of you, Father" or will that be depressing as well? Anyone watching it?

I'm kinda waiting for a new KBS daily to arrive. Will see.

Have a great weekend, all.

I think this season is all about Corruption etc. Both in the media, government, police force, entertainment world.... Signal, The Good Wife, Pied Piper, TF38, The K2, Neighborhood Hero (I think?), Entertainer, MDBC and I haven't seen them, but I think Woman With a Suitcase and Neighborhood Lawyer Jo Deul Ho also have an element of it?

I actually love all that you mentioned it's not haha! :P But it's certainly not a necessity for my liking a show, at all, so might give this a try still. The reason I disliked K2 was that it suddenly shifted gears a few eps in, from being a complete thriller, to mostly being about the sort of ridiculous (imo) romance.

I think I'll wait until Night Light is finished before trying it, that way I'll know in advance iif they suddenly mess everything up halfway or something.

Carole,

As a long-time beanie who's read your comments, I feel like we're old friends.

So far the only thing that's depressing (or maddening) about Father I'll Take Care of You is Lee Soo Kyung's acting. I love some of the actors involved but I'm not sure I can take any more of her screaming. I don't think she's uttered a single sentence at normal pitch.

Take care of yourself.

Ah, thank you! I'm doing better. I actually walked outside today!

So it's good? I think i can deal. If i can endure our rigid lead in Flower in Prison I can endure a screamer.

Gab Soon is so angsty it is almost depressing. But it is so full of real life vs the (apparently) Korean norm of marrying rich..that I'm invested. I kinda avoided Tailors because I didn't want to deal with what looked to be our main characters divorcing...but I got all that and more in Gab Soon. I seriously don't know how some of these relationships will turn out. Which is very strange and realistic for a kdrama.

I'll try to see Father.

Currently watching King 2 Hearts - I have hold off watching this for so long despite my love for Jo Jung Suk from his OMG days because (1) the ending to his K2H's character (2) the wrong perception that this drama is a melo (which I probably got from all the wailing due to no 1).

Color me surpsrised that this is actually a comedy! Ignoring the stupid magician / dr evil plot, this is entertaining with some ROFL moments. Cannot believe I missed this fun, and the comments from DB threads were so exciting. I am still on episode 10 and I do fear what's to come, but I will enjoy the ride now (and perhaps rewatch Jealousy Incarnate to wash away the heartbreak of the ending).

Haha, as I was rewatching it, I realized that King 2 Hearts' brand of humor isn't sooo different from JI...in that it also takes great joy in torturing the male lead when he's a jerk. I forgot how much I lived for the interactions between Lee Seung-gi and Jo Jung-seok when this aired.

It's too bad that the show has a lot of unintentional humor (yes, the magician), mixed in with the intentional, otherwise it could have been a perfect gem for me.

Hi beanies,
just stopping by for my weekly db fix in the middle of a move next week. Packing, cleaning, oh - and with Christmas travels in the mix, it's chaotically festive!

watching

Minoz Mermaid - love how Sim Chung moves her mouth like a fish sometimes - she is genius-ly gullible.

Weightlifting Fairy - I like how simple the story is and how fresh Bok-Joo is

Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim - who's playing God? This is getting heavy.

Infinity Challenge - history hip-hop, somehow the big name rappers + our IC crew are actually putting in a decent effort to make it happen. The history expert teacher though, I had a headache 10 minutes into his lecture because he fired intense information so fast with no fluff that it was too much to absorb.

Sad movie - it showed up subbed in dramacool although it's a 2005 movie. Has a rather old modern feel to it but I'd give it a B- rating and recommend it.

I thing the kdrama year is ending on a high note with several good dramas to take us into 2017 (already)?? I do admit that I miss all the hype and loveliness of Moon Lovers.

Happy December! \/

On the one hand, yay I get to go home and see my family and not pay for groceries myself and I can stop pretending to be an adult for a few weeks.

It's that good, I'm posting a link below.

Which I love, both of them... if only we got more than three epis per 3 years.

Happy Weekend! This is my new life theme song, watch it!

"college has been super fun and I’ve learned so much both in my classes and out. I don’t want this to end… can’t I just keep learning forever?"

---

Enjoy this stage in your life.

I won't say college will be the greatest time of your life. Life various phases all have wonderful and rich things to offer.

I will say that your time in college is most definitely a "unique" time in your life that you'll never be able to go back to. It's a time (for most who attend) when one gets to experience the world as an "adult" for the first time and really define who they are on their own terms, without having both feet totally in adulthood.

Best of luck, and have some gosh darn fun! (Don't neglect your studies though!)

Thank you! I definitely feel that, and I do want to make the most of it. Even if my definition of a good time a bit different than most (I'm an introvert and a k-drama addict, so my "staying up until 2AM" involves a lot more headphones and tv than my friends) I want to live fully and meet new people. I'm enjoying playing adult, and I definitely won't forget my studies... unless there's a drama episode out that night.

One more thing on the college topic.

College Dating Advice Rule #1: The campus library is hands down the best place to meet potential dating candidates.

I met and laid out most of the groundwork for nearly all of my college era romantic entanglements while studying/hanging out at the library.

My college library was sort of divided in two parts. The first couple levels were more relaxed and social, with people chatting and hanging out, while other levels were more strictly focused on studying/reading. I hung out on the social levels when doing menial or general busy work for classes and mixed that in with meeting/talking with girls. When I needed to focus, I'd hit the more subdued/academic focused levels. My bet is your library has a somewhat similar set-up.

The benefit of meeting in the library over meeting out in a social setting is that generally since it's a darn library, you get a certain crop of individual there. Ones that are mindful of their academic performance, generally of a higher intelligence, and will have subsequent futures in accordance with that sentiment.

So, conclusion: Want to meet a nice, handsome boy with a future? Go to the library! ;)

P.S. This is also true not just for romantic engagements, but for making friends as well.

Lol that's what people say about our library too! Except that apparently the best place to get dates is the "no talking" silent study area. Don't ask me how it works, but apparently it does.

I have a rant.

*GROANS ABOUND*

I know. I know. Bear with me.

[Begin Rant]

Our dear site is frequently championed as being a haven that promotes discussion and diversity of opinion. While generally true, I've noticed that some on this site are not very receptive to others disagreeing with them. If you disagree with them (especially if you use humor), they react in an ultra sensitive manner.

I'll throw out an example. The other day someone casually dissed the talents of an actress I like in a thread. You know the kind of off-hand comment like, "everyone knows she's not a good actress." Something to that effect. Perfectly reasonable. Nothing wrong with that.

Then I come along. See the comment. And think, "Hey I disagree with that".

So I respond in a joking fashion, using winky faces and the whole shebang. I say something to the effect of, "Aw man, why you gotta go bashing [X] actress?" Again. Jokingly. That winky face was definitely there. I swear! ;) No really it actually was.

I then continue my comment, laying out why I disagreed. I was careful not to be confrontational and to not fault the person for their differing view. H*ll, I even gave the ole trusty line, "To each his or her own."

I ended with a joking resignation that I'd just have to continue "being a contrarian". I capped it off with a friendly smily face.

So...

Back this person replies.

And she's taken offense dear fellow commenters!

First, she defends her position, laying out her various points. Which is exactly the kind of healthy disagreement this site thrives on! Bravo!

BUT!

She then attacks my eyesight (you know... for not being able to ascertain acting talent) and then proceeds to lecture me, proclaiming how people on DB shouldn't have to "face allegations that they are bashing actors or actresses if they don't like them." (I'm paraphrasing.)

Sensitive much? Uh huh.

Unable to parse comedic language cues signalling lack of seriousness and indicative of a causual (non-confrontational) tone? Yep.

If this was an isolated incident I'd shrug it off. But it happens quite frequently.

I'm at a loss.

As a guy, jokingly giving another crap when you disagree is kinda how we function. Everyone takes it and dishes it. No hurt feelings.

Should I be all submissive and prostrate myself in my dissenting comment? Perhaps it'd be better received?

Something like, "Oh kind commenter, I must humbly differ in opinion. Please do not mistake my disagreement as devaluing your position. I am but a lowly man who sees red when you see white."

And there I go a mocking...

D*mnit...

And for that final cherry at the tippy top: Is complaining about someone being hyper-sensitive in of itself a demonstration of hyper-sensitivity?

D*mnit again... Now I'm a hypocrite..

Figures...

I'm just gonna go take a cold shower now.

......Not! No guy actually ever takes a cold shower to "calm himself"...

Whenever anyone starts a disagreement with the statement "everybody knows" I discount the statement. I just do.

To say, "everybody knows" when perhaps a more correct statement would be "many people think" or "the majority of people think" is lazy and illogical.

Now, if people want to flame me because everybody knows "X" is a bad actress. Go ahead.

But I offer you my hand in solidarity, Emanresu. Nobody KNOWS everything when it comes to opinions.

To be fair, the commenter didn't actually say "Everybody knows..."

She made a statement about the casting of an actress. Then said the phrase, "We all know how that turned out..." The implication being that the actress was horrible, and that everyone is in agreement.

To be even more fair, that assessment (that the actress is less than ideal), is generally the consensus around this board.

Thus my use of the "contrarian" bit (in reference to my viewpoint).

What??? You're not going to take an ice cold shower fully clothed like in Pinocchio? My perceptions of reality have been altered forever.

As for the commenting, I can see both sides of the coin here, because I think like you I've felt like I've been on both sides of the coin here. I've made comments I wish I could delete, I've been hard on actors and singers who really probably deserve a break and I've tried to disagree respectfully and had it backfire. There's probably some perfect balance, a secret to communicating without mistepping on either side, but I definitely haven't found it. So I can't offer any advice, but like @Wag_a_Muffin I can offer solidarity and a little "fighting!" on your behalf. I believe in you! And all of us beanies! *hands over some raspberry chocolate*

Just thought of something.

Perhaps it is a factor of the language barrier?

I know some who frequent this board learned English as a second language.

If that were the case, one could conceivably miss the nuance inherent in statements said in jest.

What appears to a native speaker as a joking statement, perhaps appears blunt and confrontational to a non-native speaker.

IDK.

Just thinking as I type.

I think it may also be because written language lacks intonation, facial expressions, and all other markers of mood. Emojis will not necessarily do the job, because they cost nothing to insert, and it is up to the reader to take them into account or not as they read.

Once I attended a training session where the instructor had us make an interesting experiment: read the same feedback comment in a gentle, then a harsh tone. The first time it was OK; the second time it came off as really offensive.

The point was that we had to be extra careful how we worded feedback, because the person on the receiving end might be having a bad day, feeling particularly sensitive, self-conscious, or otherwise pepared to take offence, and it would be the second version they would be playing in their minds. In that kind of situation, an emoji here might be read as a simple sign of hypocrisy.

In any case, at the end of the day there is no greater waste of energy than getting worked up about people we don't know, be it kdrama people, or anonymous beanies. I'd say just your best to stay civil, and if it begins to look a little dangerous, just walk away. ;-)

This is so true! especially since reading something is a two part experience--the author's background or intention the reader's background and perceptions. I think it's really fascinating how two people can get completely different messages out of the same thing--not just kind vs. rude tones but also moral messages, emotional impact etc. If you add the fact that you get no tone or facial/body language cues when reading something to help define context and meanings can get really muddled. ^^

Ditto - This week alone two people sent me this emoji ? Instead of this emoji ?. I think they think the first one is a smile, but it isn't right?

It's irritated. So, maybe they are irritated with me or confused. Ack! Emoji issues are real peeps!

Because I live in a very very very polite place and the irritated face for real is a huge cultural no no, I think they just think it means a happy face. And I could be wrong, but it looks like someone baring their teeth.

There's that issue as well :-) I usually have a hard time picking emojis because most of the time they don't fit how I feel at all. Emotion is a lot more varied and subtle than a set of stock faces. That one looks like a kind of embarrassed grin to me, but it really means "irritated". Fancy that... So, how do you represent an embarrassed grin then? :-)

I'm just trying it out, because my emojis change on different sites and devices.

? - Not this one?
? - I think this is embarrassed. right?
? - irritated
? - mad
? - confused

Oh, @Mermaid Scribbler and my irritated are the same. But it looks much more irritated before I post it.

English is my third language and sometimes it definitely does hinder you when it comes to arguments, however calm they may be. Getting nuances right, both when writing and when reading a comment, can be really tricky and sometimes I've spent half an hour trying to figure out the best way to reply (though I often take a lot less, it's the extreme, obviously, but still).

Especially as cultural differences also come into play. For instance, someone using a winking smiley might mean one thing for you and something else for another. You never know what hidden cultural codes you use unknowingly that the other person will assume means the same for you as for them.

I sadly once managed to misunderstand something in response to sancheezy's perfectly fine comment disagreeing with what I'd said. Granted, some of it was due to my high stress level at the time, but a lot of it was also due to my missing some nuances. I think it's mostly in how you go from there? We resolved it quickly and easily as I realized I'd misunderstood, because s/he explained calmly that wasn't what was meant.

But there are certainly more sensitive people here lately who don't know that differing opinions are just that. Though mostly only come across them in popular actors/dramas threads where they get fired up if someone comments negatively on the shirt a stylist put their oppa in for a photoshoot. Which, of course, is super fair, because saying someone didn't do their job properly when dressing their oppa is obviously the same as personally attacking said oppa. Obviously ;)

Fun fact, when I first started reading DB I'd write comments and then delete them without posting. And when I finally did, it probably took me two hours to hit "submit comment". Either that or a half second of subconscious action. I don't write-delete comments so much anymore, but it can still take me a while to figure out what/how to say something.

You know, I actually never connected the shower scenes with calming themselves down. To me it's so obviously done for pure fanservice and there's usually steam surrounding them (indicating a scolding shower rather than an icecold one) that I usually think "Okay, here we go again, another fanservice shower with no story-value and a lot of symbolism in the fact that it's a 'steamy' shower" *cue chuckle and eyeroll* (and I'm always reminded of Kim Soo Hyun's shower scene in MLFAS where he visibly wore a towel in the shower LOL).

Also, I think sometimes, if you were to put it in a story context, it's more of a "I feel broody, so I'm gonna take a hot shower to feel better" rather than a "need a cold shower cause of all my feelz" thing (yes, I used the z ironically, don't judge).

Oh gosh, I'm writing so many long, rambling and pointless posts today lol. Never mind this, just pass along people :P

Any long rambling comment dedicated to fanservice shower scenes cannot simply be passed by.

I agree it's super funny how they'll all wear towels in the shower (or clothes, in at least one super hilarious case). But I almost prefer that to the awkward blurred fight scene in the K2. I couldn't take that seriously, not at all.

On a less kdrama-y note, I do find that a good long shower is seriously therapeutic.

At least in a lot of dramas they just shoot them waist up, so you can't actually see the ridiculousness of wearing clothes and towels in the shower lol.

I don't think the K2 shower scene was supposed to be taken seriously? I found it pretty funny, in an intended way and rather refreshing as obviously it was still fanservice, but at least it was part of the story. Like the difference between the Signal Subway PPL where an entire scene was about nothing but picking up sandwiches in comparison to some more subtle ones where they just eat while talking about semi-important story-stuff. I actually read that it was the first scene they shooted, because JCW was worried about whether he'd be able to still look good enough for it once the shooting had gone on for a bit as then he wouldn't be able to get as much food, sleep etc. I wish actors could have a normal work scedule... Their health must be in shambles once they finish a drama...

But I don't want you to get the idea that this whole comment was an attack on you. Our exchange was just one of multiple other exchanges with multiple people that led to my comment. Ours just happened to be the most recent, so I used it as an example.

Your remarkable restraint and the civility in your reply to this is commendable, and I appreciate you not getting angry.

In retrospect, after having calmed down since posting the rant (I took a cold shower! ;) Lol...), I think I overreacted to some extent.

My post I think was perhaps a demonstration of my own hyper-sensitivity, so I apologize if you feel singled out.

As others have pointed out in their responses above, ensuring you are civil and clear in commenting, and that you aren't misunderstood, is a never ending endeavor, one that takes effort and is imperfect.

I think my rant was a reflection of my frustration at not being entirely successful in that regard.

I hope we can move on gracefully and courageously into the future and forget our little misunderstanding.

Maybe since kdramas are so full of young actors now...have to say I was blown away by the matured expressions from GY lol, I think he does comedy and seriousness in such a subtle way, so it's kinda new to experience in dramas. Also KGE really is bringing the comedy factor from her side and it's funny how soon I fell for this pair. Anyway hope it keeps getting better. The writer better not mess up this one!

I have finished a number of older Korean films that I can cross off my watch list.

I watched the 1988 Korean film, "Chilsu and Mansu" directed by Park Kwang-soo and starring Ahn Sung-ki, Park Joong-hoon, and Bae Jong-ok . It was about two working class billboard painters who deal with the various frustrations of their lives. It's the first of several movies that starred Ahn Sung-ki and Park Joong-hoon together. This movie was important to the Korean film industry since it was able to make social commentary on the class disparity in Korea as well as the influence that American pop culture had on Korea. This was released around the tail end of the Korean military dictatorship thus the censorship of films was becoming looser. It was a good movie that was a bit slow at times. However, the final 30 minutes of the film was really good.

Another film I watched was Im Kwon-taek's 1990 film, "The General's Son" with Park Sang-min and Shin Hyun-joon. This is the first of a trilogy about the real life figure, Kim Doo-han. He was a gangster who rose in the ranks of the Jongno Korean underworld and eventually ends up protecting Jongno and its citizens from being taken over by the Japanese yakuza during the Japanese occupation. He is also Song Il-kook's maternal grandfather. I watched this since I watched "Sopyonje" about a year ago and wanted to see some of Im Kwon-taek's other films. It was a merely okay movie that had some cool fight scenes but was marred a bit with some overt nationalism and a lack of depth on the character of Kim Doo-han himself. Hwang Jung-min also had a tiny role here as a bartender which was amusing to see.

I also finished the 1995 Park Kwang-soo film, "A Single Spark." This was a biopic about Jeon Tae-il, a protester who self-immolated himself in 1970 to expose the awful working conditions that was practiced in numerous factories and sweatshops in Korea. I watched this since director/writers Lee Chang-dong and Hur Jin-ho had a hand in writing the screenplay for this movie before they started directing their own films. The movie was intercut with a side story about a writer trying to write a biography of Jeon Tae-il so that his efforts for workers rights would not be forgotten. The two stories were presented in color for the biographer and black and white for Jeon Tae-il. The film was also crowdfunded due to its sensitive topic. This was a good movie with a powerful message about workers rights that were being sacrificed in favor of Korea's economic development during Park Chung-hee's dictatorship.

Its fun!!!

- Acting awesome
- Our two heroes - lol.. this is going to be such a fun ride
- one heroine yet to make her entry, the other amazes me with her acting.. what a stark difference from how she was in CIIT

Irony/ plot point i don't understand

If she pulls out the sword out of goblin, goblin dies. And she was never supposed to be alive in the first place. Is it a happy ending where both leads die??

And isn't grim reaper supposed to have amnesia..no amnesia as of now..

Very well executed episode.. after a slew of disappointing ep 1, this si awesome

I don't know if you're wanting something Western or Eastern, but...

Have you checked out Masterpiece's Poldark (British TV show)?

It's set in the late 18th Century.

Poldark, a young man of wealthy birth, returns from war overseas to find his father dead, his family's estate in ruins, and his beloved engaged to his best friend. He must pick up the pieces and start his life anew.

I rather enjoyed the first season. Haven't got to the second yet (it just finished airing I believe).

But it's got that sweeping, romantic period epic vibe to it that Pride and Prejudice so encapsulates.

I recommend it if you want something in that vein.

I think Cozybooks is referring to the BBC adaptation of Gaskell's North and South ... grittier than Austen's works but still has that period drama feel.

One of my favourite adaptations of Austen's books is the Northanger Abbey version with Felicity Jones - her overactive melodramatic imagination has me in stitches.

Oh, a favourite girly movie at home is the Abduction Club. Completely ridiculous but entertaining in the best way.

Yeah, that's the one! It is a lot gritter, as are the two Dickens' adaptations I recommended. But I think they all have the period feel, which I love, as well as an element of social commentary for the period that I find fascinating. ^^

It's been a really tiring Friday, so let's just say I'm glad kitty and I survived it. There are just days where you feel it's enough to have just come through it alive, never mind battered and worn, and this was one of those days.

Drama-wise, still soldiering on with Career, which has improved somewhat. Tamaki Hiroshi's smiles keep me going. That man is so fine. Cain and Abel is quite interesting, while Suna no Tou is sometimes uncomfortable to watch.

Lobster is growing on me, though not at crack level. I am glad I'm liking Jeon Ji-hyun more in this than You Who Came From The Stars, she's great as Shim Chung and I think Lee Min-ho is more or less holding his own against her (but I'm biased and will say she has an edge). I love that bit of light-hearted instrumental music that plays whenever she's being nutty.

Also rewatching Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils 96. One of these days, I will tackle the novel. But for now, happy to see Felix Wong revisit my screen as Qiao Feng.

Is anyone not feeling Kim Go Eun in Goblin? Though I've enjoyed her movies and her acting is quite good, she and her character failed to charm me in Goblin.

First of all, the whole drama is so sweeping, and all the characters have an air of suspense and mystery to them- whereas the female lead is your stock schoolgirl with a smart mouth who sees ghosts. Her character, at the outset, seems too simple and boring. The child part was well-done, but somehow the adult part seemed lacking. I fail to see anything interesting about her- in the writers previous works the female leads have been interesting women- a stunt woman, a smart doctor, cool army officer etc. It isn't the case here.

Also, the chemistry between Gong Yoo and KGE seems off to me. I would have expected an intensity worth of a sweeping romance/ supernatural connection, but it doesn't seem to be there. Whereas for LDW and Yoo Inna, I could feel it from both the teasers and poster.

I somehow feel if the character had more mystery (at least in the 1st episode) and nuances, it would have captivated me. Also, I somehow feel someone like Kim So Hyun/ Kim Yoo Jung/ Park So Dam would have carried out this role much better. (Although the first two would be little difficult to pair with Gong Yoo, because they'd come across more as daughters. ) PSD was so good with Jang Hyuk in Beautiful mind.

Based on PDM's acting in cinderella.. i honestly would not want her to play a role here..

Since this is again a bubbly school girl kindof role...i can easily see PDM overdoing the bubbliness and the high pitch of the voice..

KSH in her cameo was interesting.. well she definitely looks a lot more mature than any of her counterparts.. including demeanour.. kind of like it..

KYJ would be such a kiddo ... you are right..would totally give off the daughter feel..

******
My most fav character .. lol.. the child version of current goblin's serving family... with a smart mouth.. that was so fun..

and ofcourse i wonder.. if the ancestor child died in the ocean... lol..how did the family continue

Old FTI clips! Love it, even though Hong Ki's voice condition doesn't sound too good, he was so overworked back then.

From what I can tell the artist is Wheesung (reading the Hangul, don't know the song sadly). The title is: 결혼까지 생각했어 . Unless I've misspelled, this should help you at least find the song on YouTube as you can just copy paste together with the artist name.

I'm sorry I can't translate the title for you, I can read Hangul fairly well, but only understand very few words as of yet.

Hope it helps!

WOW, such a quick response and absolutely correct as well.

Beanies are *luv*

The first time i came across Lee HongKi was when he was in You're Beautiful and vaguely noted that he was some member of a band but never followed up on it.

I was still quite new to KDrama then, first one i watched was "Coffee Prince" - up to now I m still a Gong Yoo and Yoon Eun-Hye.

Am absolutely going to watch Goblin.

Since I heard HongKi on King of Masked Singers, i've been a fan of his.

He's got such a beautiful distinctive voice and great control (now). Only one of a few singers whose voice i can immediately recognize.

Following that i've fallen into the FTIsland pit as well haha. Now i know all the members' names LOL

Thank you so much for the help. Listening to the original, i actually prefer Hongki's version of it plus Hongki's rendition of the first song as well.

am i biased much?? hehe

Glad I could help!

I'm a huge fan of FTI, so it was absolutely my pleasure finding out the song for you :)

Hong Ki's performance on King of Mask was golden! I came across him in You're Beautiiful first too, but I didn't much like the drama and had no idea who he was. I only learned their band name after seeing Seunghyun on Idol Maknae Rebellion and then it kind of snowballed from there lol. He's just such a lovable 4D goofball and they're all so crazy talented and unique, what's not to love? ^^

Have you seen their reality show? I think it's 19+ rated lol, but so much fun as well as an interesting look into their struggles of trying to break free of the Kpop image and into the rock band culture.

I much prefer Hong Ki's voice to Wheesung's and honestly I don't think it's entirely about preference and bias, he seems to have better technique (judging by other performances where his voice is in better health).

Coffee Prince was my first drama too, it's to blame entirely for my k-addiction haha. Both GY and YEH were amazing in that show. I hope Goblin delivers!
