Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

javabeans

Age of Youth 2: One thing about this season that feels like a noticeable improvement is the feeling of direction and trajectory. Season 1 was loose and breezy (in positive ways!), but certainly meandering. I see now that seeds for Ji-won’s backstory were planted last year (like the ringing in her ears), and it makes me wonder at why it wasn’t explored or set up back then, and rather left to sit there unaddressed. This season feels tighter and more planned, and I’m thrilled that Ji-won is at the center of it, because that girl is all kinds of weirdly awesome.

Rescue Me: This show is so good, but almost too real—it makes me so furious I can hardly stand to watch sometimes. I hate religious fanaticism so, so much, UGH, I want to burn that cult church down to the ground and salt the hell out of that earth.

Man Who Sets the Table: I have a Father Is Strange-shaped hole in my heart now, so I tried this new family drama just to see if it would be in a similar, heartwarming vein. (Spoiler alert: It is not.) It set my blood boiling from the first scene and I was so enraged on Sooyoung’s behalf at her having such a flaming ass of a father that I couldn’t get beyond ten minutes, so nope, this one’s a no-go.

My Golden Life: This, on the other hand, is more promising—lighter, brighter, cuter. Shin Hye-sun and her sister are charming, although I’m iffy on the two guys. I was very curious to see whether I could watch post-scandal Park Shi-hoo in a rom-com role, then found that it wasn’t the scandal that bothered me, but rather the very strong feeling that he was miscast and what the drama really needs is Jo Jung-seok. (You can’t unsee it—or un-want it—once you’ve thought it!) It feels like he’s trying too hard to be bumbly-funny, and that makes me uncomfortable.

Criminal Minds: More of the same.

Reunited Worlds: I was watching an episode with only half my attention and realized I was missing a lot of the plot logic when I couldn’t follow the events. So, I rewound and rewatched to fill in the holes, and realized that while paying attention does help, it does not, unfortunately, create plot logic out of nowhere.

Hospital Ship: I think I’ll pass. It’s not bad, but it doesn’t get me either. It sort of feels like Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim but without any of the quirkiness or compelling characters… so kind of like a regular medical drama, then.

girlfriday

School 2017: It didn’t go out on the same high that we were all feeling a few weeks ago, but I was satisfied with where we left our characters. True to form, School 2017’s biggest success was in being a breakout vehicle for its rookie stars, who now have a horde of loyal fans eager to see what they’ll do next. Could anything top swoony bad boy Hyun Tae-woon though? I mean, he even sings!! I wouldn’t bet on it… but in the meantime maybe I’ll go back and rewatch Jealousy Incarnate.

Rescue Me: I leapt out of my chair and fist-pumped like a fool when Dong-chul came back into the mix. I was so desperate for someone to save Sang-mi that I didn’t realize how frustrated I was by the other boys until he came back and breathed life back into everything. Now I finally feel like things are getting DONE.

Falsify: Sometimes it’s hard to notice because the drama is slickly made, but I often watch Falsify and think there are too many masterminds for one show. It lacks realism when everyone’s always got a twist up his sleeve, even though for the sake of the plot, those twists are essential. In any case, I like it when things get heisty and capery, so this week was a fun departure in that sense.

Age of Youth 2: I’m so ecstatic that Ji-won and her editor are getting their own loveline this season! Their dynamic is so cute and weird… though I guess that’s kind of how all the relationships on this show go, which is why I like Age of Youth in the first place.

HeadsNo2

Live Up to Your Name: I do love the wrenches this show throws into things, since I wasn’t expecting a trip back to Joseon so soon. Once Yeon-kyung figured out how the time traveling mechanism worked, I laughed WAY too hard when she kept “innocently” trying to kill Im to get them back to her time. And then the drama kicked in, and I was crying. Can we please just stay in Joseon?

Reunited Worlds: If they could bring a person back from the dead, can they do the same with the plot?

Manhole: Still both manning and holing.

Rescue Me: They certainly know how to keep this from getting repetitive, since the writer seems to understand how to throw the audience a bone every now and then. We knew Sang-mi couldn’t be rescued this early in the game, but by giving us that shred of hope, that fleeting moment of freedom, the show effectively raised the stakes even higher. I remember being so mad at Dong-chul for not being there during any of the rescue attempts, but now it all makes sense, since he’s the only one able to infiltrate the cult. Woo Do-hwan is giving me Kim Woo-bin vibes from White Christmas by just exuding charisma and talent left and right, so color me stoked that his role is gaining even more prominence. (As for you, Sang-hwan, what’s it going to take for you to learn that you can never trust the system?)

Falsify: Something something unrelated late-game villain, something somethi—zzzzzzzzzzzz…..

Currently recapping: Falsify

The King Loves: Yessss, Rin! He finally stepped up his game and confessed (well a kiss kinda counts as a confession right?) his love for So-ah. It’s just unfortunate that the kiss just didn’t have the best optics. It kind of made me remember the epic fail pantry kiss in Heirs. One would think that after having dated Lee Seung-gi, Yoon-ah would have learned how to smack lips with finesse. In any case, I am glad this drama isn’t going to sink my second lead ship. I read up on the novel chapter summaries this week, and to be honest, it sounds like a waay better book. I think the drama just doesn’t capture all the action and angst that’s clearly all there in the book, and I don’t know why because writer Song Ji-nah has definitely proved she can do it all before in Healer.

Hospital Ship: My luuurve Ha Ji-won. She is amazing in this as always, and her character is stellar and complex, but the problem seems to be EVERYTHING else. I like the setting, and the greenness of some of the younger actors is offset by the veteran cast members (sometimes), but I just wish that there were a clearer direction in this show. It just seems to be meandering like a ship lost at sea (hur).

SailorJumun

Currently recapping: Age of Youth 2

Seven Day Queen: I could not handle this show. I thought I could in the beginning, but it was TOO MUCH. I mean that as the best compliment possible because the emotional levels I’d reached while watching… I didn’t even know they existed! I had to step away for a while because it was so intense, but once I gathered the courage to come back and finish it, I was happy with the ending we got. What a beautiful, bittersweet way to say goodbye to these characters. It was very Titanic-esque in bundling up so much tragedy and giving us the much needed relief at the very end. And by relief, I of course mean more tears. So many tears….

Manhole: *sees Jaejoong* … *dies* In all seriousness, I loved the crazy (bordering on psycho) energy that this show had. It felt like the perfect pick-me-up after speeding through the final episodes of Seven Day Queen. I’m a little behind since life decided to be a jerk and get in the way, but I’m not exactly sure if I want to catch up. With the quick pace that it has, I’m scared to enter an endless cycle of failed manhole trips. I’m currently paused at Pil emerging as a gangster (which is giving me some serious Triangle flashbacks ❤) and it already feels like it’s getting repetitive. Is my love for Jaejoong worth the multiple trips down memory lane? I really don’t know.

Oooo, just saw an advert for The Good Doctor on CBS (US) and I think I may just watch this when it airs. I'm longing for a good medical drama with a lot of heart. Autistic pediatrician struggling but ultimate winning the medicine game may be just what I'm looking for. May check out the K-version as well.

I haven't seen it and can't comment on the medical side, but my mother vouches for the acting (Joo Won!) and the portrayal of high-functioning autism (we have someone with autism in the family).

@WishfulToki,

FYI for your Mom. I started watching family drama OJAKGYO BROTHERS a week or two ago. Joo Won and Yeon Woo-jin play the youngest of four brothers down in the orchard. Grandma is played by the same actress who portrayed halmoni in LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL (also highly recommended!). She's excellent. ; -)

I'll mention it to Mom, but sounds like something I should watch! Thanks!

I just finished the Korean Good Doctor, while thinking about the remake! It was really quite fantastic, I'd recommend it. There's some hospital politics (what medical drama doesn't have those?) but they don't get in the way too much. And I absolutely loved the acting, I don't know much about high functioning autism though so I can't vouch for that so much. Hopefully the American version is as good! (I saw the trailers too, looks interesting!)

I enjoyed the Korean version very much.

I haven't watched American TV in ages but I may check this new series out to see how it fares against the k-version.

I wonder if the American actors watched any episodes of the Korean version to prepare for their roles...

I too have a hole in my heart when My Father is Strange ended. My Golden Life? I can't make it past 5 minutes. Usually actors (and story) are the reasons why I choose to stick out for a drama. My Father is Strange started out slow. But the characters drew me in. Also, I can't handle the main dude's character and acting. A tiny bit of me is a little icky about his scandal. Maybe if he is a better actor I can overwrite his personal life. I want to enjoy my dramas. Not barrel through it forcefully. Maybe I will give it another chance if dramabeans gives positive reviews in the weeks to come.

Age of Youth 2 is a gem. It has a different feel to the quirky first season. I enjoy it nonetheless. Exploring the past lives of the girls to confront their present day lives are always a welcome subject in my books.

"One would think that after having dated Lee Seung-gi, Yoon-ah would have learned how to smack lips with finesse." --> this comment is HILARIOUS! One of the best phrases I've read in DB ever! Hahaha

That piscean performance was pretty sedate(d), but it is a sageuk. ;-)

I wonder if that embroidered bird on San's veil had been foreshadowing. As in Monty Python ex-parrot...

Watching:
The King Loves, so far I like the story and the complex relationship that the prince has with the king and queen. I also like the friendship between San, Rin and Won. On the romance I am rooting for Rin since I think San loves him. Won I don't like his obsession that he has for San and to me is weird and creepy. I think is because of how the Won character is written because I have liked the last drama that I saw the actor in.
Save Me: Really this drama is sometimes to real and I get angry and frustrated but in a good way. Good performances by the whole cast and the story keeps me guessing as to what will happen next.
My Golden Life:
To me the actress who is the female lead really nails her performance, she to me is carrying the whole show. Looking to checking her other dramas. So far I don't find Park Shi Hoo distracting but I agree maybe he should have taken the sister's love interest instead. I find the sister's story weird, and I don't understand why she is even in love. Hopefully her story gets flesh out in the coming episodes, or else I will find myself fast forwarding her scenes.

Like you, I'm not as distracted with Park Shi Hoo but I'd rather have Lee Tae-hwan as the male lead. I enjoyed the initial episodes and I find Shin Hye Sun really relatable as the female lead.

Nothing much that signals 'quality' to me, but at least I'm entertained:
School 2017: Goodbye Tae Swoon, thank you for the Boy in Luv dance. I loved this drama until episode 12 but afterwards the romance became sappy and I missed seeing more of the other characters.
Hospital Ship: I turned a blind eye to the medical errors that even non-doctors can spot (no gloves drama? why? ) and am actually enjoying this. It's a no-brain-required watch with pretty sunsets.
Man Who Sets the Table: I will watch this for On Joo Wan's smiling face and for the ridiculous rich ladies with their satoori accent. I don't care too much for the makjang family antics, though the verbal abuse of the heroine's father is infuriatingly very realistic.

*waves at WishfulToki*

I'm gearing up for THE TEMPERATURE OF LOVE, which I expect to be terrific given the casting... as long as the writing cuts the mustard.

Will tale a peek at HOSPITAL SHIP to catch Jo Hyun-jae's cameo, and hope it tides me over until FOUR MEN. Is it asking too much to conjure him into another sageuk?!

Am way behind on LIVE UP TO YOUR NAME, so hope to give that another shot as THE KING LOVES winds down.

I tried Live up to Your Name but didn't watch more than 1 episode ... I can't believe I'm saying this, but I am rather sick of time travelling dramas this year! Let me know if this one is worth it and I will marathon it later, after a good sageuk or two (I have TKL on my list too).

I've paused watching Criminal Minds for the last couple of episodes. I don't know why none of the dramas are catching my attention. I hope a new drama starts soon that'll be able to hold my attention. This drama funk of mines needs to go, I need a new crack show!!

I can't seem to find any weekday drama that can pique my interest. I only tried Manhole because the trailers pulled me in but had to drop it after 6 episodes. Thankfully, the weekend programs are awesome. I'm currently watching Age of Youth 2, Rescue Me, Live Up to Your Name and My Golden Life. And I've been binge-watching Forest of Secrets for the past 3 days. These shows more than make up for the weekend drought.

What is with all the dramas this year, they have all been so much meh, filled with uggghhh. And an added dash of whiny. Someone needs to slap these bissshs of characters so that the shows can move on from the stangnet reek that makes me disgusted to continue watching. Like honestly I have tried like 8-9 dramas and haven't liked any really since after march 2017. It all went downhill from there. I am honestly stuck watching variety shows or back to english tv. Actually check out some japanese ones for a refresher I hugely suggest it or some anime. It will clean the slate and not make you wanna kill the horrid acting of this year.

I'm curious. JB and GF, why are you not watching The King Loves? :)

Hong Jong Hyun is glorious in it - acting-wise and attire-wise. He is a dream to look at. Plus he is in real life very much like the character he's playing in TKL - strong, silent, sweet, gentle, gentlemanly, caring and all-around good person. To me he is the standout actor in TKL. :)

Only within 4 episodes Age of Youth 2 stole my heart! I love to see the cute bickering between Song Sunbae (Ji-Won) and Sung-Min lol. Seeing them just like see another drama with them as main couple.

I've officially gone off the deep end. Last weekend I finished FLOWER BOY NEXT DOOR, and enjoyed it a lot.

Now I'm nearly half-way through Cdrama HAPPY NOODLE. Baker King Kim Tak-gu takes on a new genre of flour products, with Yoon Si-yoon playing an orphan searching for his long-lost Chinese dad. The biggest drawback is the dubbing, but the voice actor's vocal quality and delivery remind me a lot of YSY's energy. ;-)

Thus far, the plot is pretty straightforward. A pleasant watch -- until the screechy second lead female shows up -- along with evil chaebol Mom. ;-)

Wow I don't think I've ever read speculation/comment about an actor's personal love/dating life here. Weird. Weirder is the shot of the kiss itself as both Yoona and Hong Jonghyun are competent onscreen kissers, as can be seen in their previous works. Seems like the kiss was directed as is for a reason.

I mean, i am also watching this show, and still loving Hae Sung, but i also ask myself what is the idea? I am more curious than touched.

Strongest Deliveryman: I am more touched than curious. You could give me more and more of our two OTP and all their friend in their daily life, and i am happy... ??☺

So agree with tinie beanie about The King Loves. Yoona not only date said boyfriend but was under the tutelage of one of the best kissers in dramaland - Ji Chang Wook. So was it HJH, the direction. Anyways, HJH... he needs to get himself a girlfriend.

And... I am also watching Hospital Ship. Finally it made me cry seing Eun-Jae crying for the death of her mom... Oh, my God... I cried with her.

My current list are :
- My Golden Life
but rather the very strong feeling that he was miscast and what the drama really needs is Jo Jung-seok. (You can’t unsee it—or un-want it—once you’ve thought it!)
NO..... I can't Un-want it now :(
I don't really like the male characters so far but I am already very much attached to Ji An. I feel like I'm ready to fight anyone who dare to hurt my Ji An (and by the 4th ep I have so many people to fight). Don't even want to try to guess with the secret birth lmao.

- Manhole
Why do I keep watching, I am question myself.

- Live Up To Your Name
Angsty week. Yeon Kyung and Mak Gae are cute. Don't do that to Heo Im ;a;

- Kahogo no Kahoko
the only dorama I'm watching right now. My weekly dose of warmth <3

Exactly my thought! I love Yeo Jin Gu so much, which makes me hates the writer for such lackluster plot ?
