Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching

I have a whole backlog of premieres I still haven’t watched, but then someone had the bright idea to issue a challenge to rewatch an old drama this month, thereby ensuring dark circles for one and all. What’s on your drama-watching plate this week—something old, something new, something happy, or something that ripped your heart out and left you for dead? –girlfriday

javabeans

Father Is Strange: I’ve been impressed with how this show has dealt with the you’re-not-really-my-father storyline, in that it has treated every character’s reactions as valid and significant. I was so expecting this show to go the easy route—to show some token anger and hurt from Joong-hee, and then resolve—but not only have we walked through his turmoil with him, we’ve also seen this truth affecting other people’s lives in a real way, and that just makes everything feel so much more sincere and worthwhile. THAT SAID, can we rev up the Joong-hee-Mi-young romance now, please? We only have eight episodes left and I want as much of it as possible!

Reunited Worlds: I’m behind on this and am studiously avoiding spoilers. La la la la la, I can’t hear you!

Criminal Minds: I’m surprised that they purposely plotted the episodes so that they don’t quite align with the cases—cases end midway through, and then new ones start. It’s… a choice, all right. On paper I like this idea, since it feels more boxed-in and repetitive for one episode to perfectly encompass one case, lather-rinse-repeat next episode, but in effect it feels sort of haphazard. The reason it doesn’t bother me too much is that I’m definitely not watching this drama for the cases, which to me are more like character-development-delivery-vehicles. And excuses for Lee Jun-ki to kick ass.

Bride of the Water God 2017: I think I like this drama’s story in concept more than in execution, but maybe that’s mostly a casting issue. I’m totally fine with Nam Joo-hyuk and Shin Se-kyung, and I laugh at their cute moments and feel all the appropriate emotional tugs for their love-that-cannot-be—but man do I hate Krystal and Gong Myung in this, both in character and in acting. Instant mood-killers.

School 2017: Oh broken, broody bromance, where would School be without you? We’ve got one hothead, one cool cucumber, and a whole lot of love lost between them, and the more they growl at each other, the more I love the show. We’re getting to a really great place with the relationship-driven storylines, and as a bonus, Teacher’s growth arc totally makes me go awww.

Falsify: I kind of wish people would wear hats that identify what side they’re on, because there are just a lot of friggin people in this story world. But I’m really digging the sense of urgency in the drama, propelled by the constant competition between newspapers to break the story and shape public opinion. Because truth, as we know, is all about how you spin it.

Reunited Worlds: I keep waiting for this show to give my heartstrings a good tug, but it never really goes anywhere past light and pleasant. I enjoy it and find all the characters likable and sweet, but the writing is disappointing me because Hae-sung doesn’t seem to be doing much of anything, even though he has like twelve people’s lives to fix and two murders to solve! Chop chop!

odilettante

New Journey to the West: As a fan of Agatha Christie who’s always wanted to ride on a sleeper train, I loved Na PD’s delight in creating his very own “Murder on the Orient Express.” I still don’t exactly understand how everyone decided Ho-dong was the killer when all the clues clearly pointed to Kyuhyun, but I’m happy Kyuhyun somehow succeeded in fooling everyone (even if it gave me worrisome flashbacks to the Mafia game). I’m also thrilled that Kyuhyun managed to finish his morning mission because he totally deserves to enjoy breakfast on his final day of filming (hey, I’m biased!), although I’m dying to know what the other missions were and if the guys were able to outsmart each other — or just outsmart themselves.

Forest of Secrets: Perfection. Now that I’ve found my favorite drama of 2017, all other dramas will pale in comparison. Oh well. To the beanies who are only now starting Forest, I am jealous! All sixteen scrumptious episodes just waiting to be devoured!

tineybeanie

Currently recapping: Falsify

Suspicious Partner: Hehe I finally got on the bandwagon. I know it’s a couple months too late, but can I rave a little? This is so cute! Nam Ji-hyun is adorable, and I may like her in this more than Shopping King Louis (*gasp* yes… it’s possible, although her chemistry with Seo In-gook was arguably better). I like how unapologetically she pursues her objectives, whether it be in her career or in her personal life. After having periodically checked in with the waning comments of my fellow beanies as the drama progressed in real time, I know that my obsession with this drama will probably peter out as the romance becomes displaced with unnecessary murder-related subplots, but I’m really enjoying it in the meanwhile. Only 25 episodes more to go!

Manhole: I know it’s not even out yet, but if I’ve watched the teasers on loop for more than an hour, that’s got to count for something right? I want Jaejoong to be balls-to-the-wall crazy quirky like in the PPAP teaser, and I want UEE to channel her inner awesomeness. She was okay in Night Light, but to be honest, that drama was all over the place, and her character didn’t really have a focus or motivation, except for that mentor-love-jealousy line with Lee Yo-won. I think she’s best playing the cool haughty diva (e.g.: You’re Beautiful, Ho-gu’s Love, and parts of Ojakkyo Brothers) with a vulnerable core, so hopefully her character isn’t just sunshine and smiles like the drama promos suggest. I also hope the comedy is on point, because if it works, I think this could definitely be a project that would solidify Jaejoong’s status as a leading man.

Seven Day Queen: Is it really over? I know I already sound like a broken record but I’ll never get tired of saying how much I love this show. From start to finish, it never disappoints me. I consider it a masterpiece that doesn’t come too often in dramaland and I’m so glad I was able to follow it via live-watching because I got to feel the every week’s anticipation and it gives me something to look forward to. Oh, what will I do with my life now? I’m in a spot wherein even watching another drama can’t stop me thinking about this show and I think it’ll take time for me to move from this spot. Again, I love you show! Thanks for dropping by in my life and giving me the best possible ending for this tragic story.

The King Loves: So far, aside from the bromance, I like San with Rin more, I love Im Si Wan but his character in this show is still not getting my interest that much but I do hope it will start soon enough before I begin to get tired of this drama. This show has a lot of potential and I’m crossing my fingers that it will not be wasted, don’t get me wrong, I still like how the story is going it’s just that I’m watching (Ooops it already ended T.T) Seven Day Queen with it and I can’t avoid to make comparison from the plot to cast and everything else that’s why it’s still a so-so for me.

Bride of the Water God: Love is in the air (or water)! That second kiss after Ha Baek making himself clear that he’s leaving, I don’t know what to feel exactly. Anyways, I feel so bad for Hu Ye, he’s trying his very best not to be the bad guy but they keep on pushing him to his limit which kinda makes me upset to Bi Ryum, he must have a good reason why he’s acting this way or I’ll put him on my list of characters that I hate.

Reunited Worlds: Honestly I thought I wouldn’t be able to watch it after the finale of Seven Day Queen because I still remember the first week of this show wherein it also airs the same day with my main and I really fell in a very dark place and feel so sad then but this show’s episodes this week is no way near that, it is kind of plain for me but I think I should be thankful because if it’s as heavy as I expect it to be I don’t think I can make it. Hoping for better episodes next week!

Moorim School: AND THEY LIVE HAPPILY EVER AFTER. This show has a fairytale ending for me. Spent 2 weeks to finish it because I took my time appreciating the cuteness of this school-themed drama with the taste of true meaning of friendship, love, power and family. I’ve watched it’s finale after the finale of Seven Day Queen and as I mentioned in one of my fanwall post, somehow it saves me from the heartbreak. Thank you show!

Strongest Deliveryman: Exactly the type of shows I need after my abused heart from Seven Day Queen, fresh start with a very refreshing theme and I also love the cast so I’m so in with this ride! Hwaiting! I still don’t have anything in particular to say as Episode 1 was just released and I’ll enjoy watching it first...

But it's sooooo good to watch and addictive! It is worth every tears, heart tugs, sobs and smiles. The writing, acting, lighting, sound, and all production elements were executed beautifully... And those beautiful pale colors hanboks are to die for. Although Jang Ok Jung's hanboks still the best.

Since it's a KBS show, I would have thought it would be on Kocowa, since that is some sort of joint venture between KBS, SBS & MBC.

Required fields are marked *

I smell failure in the future of that venture! While looking for the show last night, I read a comment about Kocowa and went to their website. Worst. Website. Ever. It didn't explain who they were, what niche(s) of the K-ent world they were serving, what shows they offered, how to access what they offered. LOL. I've never seen anything like it. (Soompi TV - when it first launched - was a distant second.)

It mentioned an app, so I downloaded it just to see if that would help. Nope. It's just a haphazard collection of shows that don't seem to be on anyone's radar in the Dramabeans-verse.

Aside from that, it's weird how much disruption has suddenly occurred in the international distribution of Korean shows. Normally when problems arise in a way that's both sudden and pervasive, it's not a coincidence. It's starting to seem as though there's an effort being made to disrupt Korea's international markets.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

Kocowa definitely threw a wrench in kdrama access, which is then amplified due to the fact IT IS THE WORST STREAMING SITE I HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED. They aren't creating the wheel here. Just copy and paste what a bazillion other streaming sites do very effectively and voila done.

0

Yeah, it sure seems like it's not a very good idea. Of course, they want to capture as much of the revenue streams from their shows as possible. But if they carve up the international audience too much, more popular sites with wider offerings won't be able to justify buying/carrying their content.

The broadcasters would be better off if they tried to capture the domestic streaming market; but let the international market grow before they jump in. Fracturing the international distribution system at this early stage will hurt them.

1

I'm not happy either. And I agree about disruption not being a coincidence. Just posted a lot about this on my fan wall.

0

I started to look into the Kocowa app for android and the reviews are unbelievably bad, mostly 2*, and many people saying the app just doesn't work and they can't stream anything even after getting a premium subscription; there are also comments there's no ad-supported free option either. As someone pointed out, you want to do a trial to make sure they can stream well and the subtitles are good but apparently no they're failing at the basic technical level. That's just unbelievable.

0

issues on several sites, the video keeps freezing and jumping back for me. I was quite blown away by the action first few minutes, then now I am just waiting for it to show normally

I thought it was ok (ep 1). I'm rooting for Go Kyung-pyo because it's his first lead role and I think he has potential, but I already want to scratch the two second leads (why chaebols again?) and Madame Jang. I think I can already guess who Kang-soo's mom is too *sigh*.

Chae Soo-bin's character doesn't strike me as that interesting so far, like they're trying hard to make her ultra cool but it still feels like a character I've seen before. I hope they'll flesh her out in interesting ways b/c at the moment even her I'll-emigrate plan just brings out the eyerolls in me (Kang-soo's plan to cover all of Seoul, meanwhile, is a much fresher motivation for his dedication to being a delivery man).

It's difficult to say goodbye to Forest of Secrets that has constantly delivered a great quality in its writing, directing, editing, and acting. This is the second thriller this year that satisfied me from beginning to the end. Would it be impossible to hope for Bae Doo-na and Jo Seung-woo's comeback to dramaland next year??

School 2017 is a light watch, but it still managed to ask all the important, yet hard to answer questions. It prompted me to think about and reflect back on so many things in my teenager and adult life, and I really love that.

The other thing I wanted to still say is that with rewatching so soon after having finished the show, it becomes very obvious how much some characters have changed – Shi Mok most of all. He actually wasn't all that nice in the early episodes, he softens quite a lot over time. And Shi Mok / Yeo Jin's development is also great to see – like how they first met, and how she was annoyed at him and then slowly beginning to know and understand him.

What I am watching: Reunited Worlds + Woman of Dignity.

Reunited Worlds feels like a mood piece, just as Second to Last Love and On the Way to the Airport were. It does not hurt that the OST for all 3 is in effect doing half of the lifting for thespians in all 3x

If there were a recap of Man who Dies to Live here, I'd probably be watching it too. That's all water under the bridge now, I know. So that's that.

Dropped: Bride of the Water God. Agree that the concept probably looked better on paper. Too little showing. Insufficient telling. At this rate, the bits would only coalesce into the big picture in the penultimate episode or so. Perhaps writer-nim thinks that she is HB. 10 episodes in, she is power/writer-blocked. The romance is not landing for me at all. The 3 guardian gods are mere furniture in this mess And that about those 3 stones? The 3 wood carvings in Man to Man were treated better. Pity the stones. What a waste of the fine thespian playing HY.

Now watching :
Mon-Tue - Falsify - I really promised myself I wouldn't watch this, but it's NGM and UJW and I just can't pass these 2 cause their chemistry is over the charts. And I really wish they would start working together already.
Bride of water God - Saving this to binge watch, cause it seriously does not work for me at 2 episodes a week.

Wed-Thur - Man who dies to live - Yes, I am watching it, and No, I have seen no other scene about islam/muslum/arab other than the first 2 episodes. I really wish MBC had not gone the cowards way and allowed this show to be subbed instead, but whatever. My korean is bad enough to get at least a hint of what is happening.
Suspicious Partner - Watching this with mom and very very behind :P

Variety - New journey to the west 4 - I love watching the goblins being 75% incapable most of the time and when Ji Won gets mad I keep on expecting him to flip out :P

Waiting for :
Manhole - The plot looks like everything but my style, but I'm staying to drool on JaeJoong. I only hope that JYJ fans don't do to Uee the same thing that they did to every Yoochun co-star back in the day.

Still waiting for Age of Youth season 2. Can't believe that we're getting this close to the premiere :)

Forest of Secrets: Fantastic drama in acting, writing and production value, but I honestly thought the ending was a bit of a stretch and didn't totally buy it. Still one of the best dramas ever. For anyone who has heard the rave reviews, remember the "Healer Rule" which is it's not necessarily gonna sparkle in the first few episodes. This one grows and gets better and better and, at some point one realizes, they really aren't gonna muck this up. I want this writer back to work on another drama right away.

Suspicious Partner: I think no romance centric drama should be this long. When the noble idiocy began, I started skipping through. At some point I realized I was re-writing how I wanted the drama to go in my head. However, that little boy and JCW is gonna be gone and the office meetings from hell... so there was enough that charmed me including the lead romance. Oh and a nice twist toward the end as well.

Criminal Minds: Things settled this week with the characters. I'm throwing production value away as obviously there were bts issues. I just find it an easy watch, much like I do all procedurals. It's why I watch them.

Bride of The Water God: Now we're getting somewhere. This writer has always been a bit of slow starter as she builds her world. Something went awry, and I think we needed more of the "god" in his godlike realm just to get a bit more of what he was like before he hit mankind. Regardless, I buy the chemistry of the cast especially between the leads.

The Liar and His Lover: I am on a mission to dig into my watch list and this week I chose this drama. I am at episode 12. After a bit of a slow start, I actually am surprised now at how invested I am in Crude Play. I should finish up this weekend and am going to try Hogu's Love or Marriage Contract; can't decide which yet.

Is it just me or does reunited world just consist of Haesung going around and waving hello to every other cast member. It's just boring me. The romance is lukewarm at best and apart from Jin Joo and Ho bang there's not much that makes me laugh.
I still look forward to BoTWG every week but I need things to get moving already, especially on the romance front. She's supposed to be his bride after all so let's get there already show.

Haha, agreed - totally accurate description -Haesung going around saying hi to everyone.

I wish the writter would just commit to at least one thing. It's like he or she just decided to graze the surface of 20 things. If this is going to be a romance than do something besides have the leads just barely flirt occasionally. If this is going to be more about the family, let's have interactions that go deeper than small talk.

I third this sentiment. I'm very irritated that no one is questioning the supernatural aspect of it as well - I mean, the man returned from the dead. That's international news to freak the world out right there!

Also, I really like Hae Chul. Ho bang, Jin Joo and Hae Chul are the only well written characters and Yeo Jin Goo is carrying Hae Sung along, but rest are falling flat.

Forest of Secrets - P.E.R.F.E.C.T. As perfect as a drama can possibly get from start to finish and what a finale it was!

School 2017Mori Mori Mori! Okay, besides Mori, I really felt Dae Hwi's pain and struggle. I think the boys are lucky to have Eun Ho, the eternal sunshine in their lives right now.

Seven Day Queen I was patting myself on the back for not shedding a tear like 50 minutes into the finale although I was close to the brink at some points. Then I happily paused, got myself some ice cream and finished the last ten minutes. I don't know what it was that dribbled down my chin and onto my chest. So yeah....what a mess!

Criminal Minds Most likely I will drop after this week, I am seeing things in the writing and direction that makes me not want to continue. The premiere week was meh but I thought this week was terrible. Even Ki Hyung's tragedy and Sohn Hyun Joo's acting at the end of ep 4 don't make a difference. Strictly for Lee Jun Ki's fans.
I'd like to ask if the original CM had delve significantly into crime profiling? I don't know what I'm watching in this version but I think they aren't really doing criminal profiling.

Behind in BOTWG and Reunited Worlds. Planning to watch Strongest Deliveryman and maybe Manhole.

> I'd like to ask if the original CM had delve significantly into crime profiling?

oh they do, they ep usually start by the tech girl explaining the report from the local police and how they can help.
They try to guess the perpetrator by visiting the latest crime scene and asking how and why the perpetrator choose the victim.

They spend time to go into what could make the victim special for the perpetrator and build a pattern or profile, they also joke to each other,

they have ep that related to the cast but it usually starts from little things, build up in the side and max at the end of the season,

FOS was indeed one of the best crime kdramas I've ever watched. I agree that the directing and acting were close to perfect, but I still think the writing was quite far from perfect for two reasons: 1- drama never surprised me: from the primary episodes I knew what chief prosecutor Lee was up to. I knew with Mr. Yoon's kid accident he would be one of the main suspects. And I knew he wouldn't kill Eun-soo. They already gave us too many hints that none of the events came as surprising as I wanted to be. 2- there were still too many plot holes and unbelievable events. It was impossible chairman Lee assistant be able to make the Eun-soo murder looks like the two previous homocide scene. When he had time to buy the similar rose detailed knife, etc?! Shi-Mok finding Mr.Yoon as the main suspect just by looking at the Eun-soo drawing was close to impossible. Yeo-Jin finding the blood trace in the 1st/2nd episode was so random... also I really wishe'd that Yeo-Jin was smarter and had a more active role in solving the cases... she was so lovely, compassionate, and badass at time, but she has never had an active role in solving the cases...

@persianrose for some reason I can't reply you or maybe the post will pop up later(hopefully not a glitch or I'll end up with multiple posts)

If you noticed, I wrote "... As perfect as a drama can possibly get from start to finish."

I was trying to say that FOS was the nearest to perfection as far as I can remember of all dramas. Of course, there were things that didn't click but I would say those were like 5% to 10% out 100%. I'd rate 90% or 9/10 for FOS' writing.

My personal rating for most crime dramas’ writing would be about 50% to 70%. It's not just the number of plotholes but also how material the 'hole' or 'gap' is to the overall plot. For Tunnel which I liked, I'd give it a 60%. The show was good in many things but the crime plot and villain was a big letdown. In the same light, I'd rate Criminal Minds 30% for bad script, poor characterization, unbelievable events and numerous logic gaps.

Back to FOS. You said "1- drama never surprised me.” Good for you.
The drama surprised me even though I had my suspicions. I am sure you are in the minority who wasn’t surprised. Most of us came up with theories, only to have it debunked, go back to the drawing board and the process repeated itself. Now, I am feeling a little dumb if like you said, the drama was actually so predictable.

“from the primary episodes I knew what chief prosecutor Lee was up to.” Most of us, including the recapper suspected Lee Chang Joon from the word go. It became more and more apparent of his duplicity and involvement as episodes went by. The drama never had him completely behind a smokescreen. The genius was in leading us up many false trails and dead ends as to what this guy’s true motives were and his exact involvement. Again, if you knew exactly what Lee was up to, give yourself a clap on your back. I doubt anyone else was totally spot on. I only made a decent guess like 3 or 4 episodes from the finale.

“I knew with Mr. Yoon's kid accident he would be one of the main suspects. And I knew he wouldn't kill Eun-soo. They already gave us too many hints that none of the events came as surprising as I wanted to be.”
There were beanies who caught on to Yoon’s kid’s accident. Sure he was immediately a suspect but we were thrown off by other things and no one was dead sure until he was caught. I belong to the camp who thought he wouldn’t kill Eun Soo but there was an equally strong camp who thought he did.

I think all these are strengths rather than weaknesses in a crime drama. It is to give hints to not one but many possible suspects and theories of the crime. A good crime drama is not one which the villain appear out of nowhere or necessarily one which you suspect the least. The question is not always “Who?” but “Why?” and “How?”

continue from above...

“It was impossible chairman Lee assistant be able to make the Eun-soo murder looks like the two previous homocide scene.”
This is not a plot hole as much as it is unnecessary. I can’t recall how far the police progress with their investigation on the flower patterned knife but they were trying to find out the list of buyers who bought this particular type of knives. This means that it is still available for sale in the market and it is imaginable that Woo had found out from policeman like Soo Chan or anyone working inside the police force the details of weapon found in Park and Ga Young’s cases. It becomes a weapon which can detract from the actual perpetuator. If Chairman Lee can open someone else safe deposit box and make weapon dealings, I am sure his underling would have no problem buying such a knife. This said, I do think it’s not necessary to have this detail.

“Shi-Mok finding Mr.Yoon as the main suspect just by looking at the Eun-soo drawing was close to impossible.”
Let me quote this from the recap “He looks at the page again, recalling Yeo-jin wondering if the figures are even numbers, and traces them again in realization. “D… T…” he murmurs. He straightens, remembering Yeo-jin’s story about Eun-soo spilling juice on Section Chief Yoon, and the confusion at the party about whether Yoon was a marine or in the special forces.”
I think I don’t need to elaborate further.

I am rebutting you point on point not because I think the show has no plothole or is perfect defined in the narrowest terms. I am rebutting because I don’t agree those are plotholes. The show definitely has plotholes. There was one which a beanie brought up in the recap – “Why would Yoon want to keep his blood stained overalls when he could have dispose of it and all other evidence?” I am sure there would be more. The point is as I said, the show is as near to perfection as a drama possibly can and it applies not just to directing and acting but writing too.

“Yeo-Jin finding the blood trace in the 1st/2nd episode was so random... also I really wishe'd that Yeo-Jin was smarter and had a more active role in solving the cases.”
Yeo Jin is an investigator, I don’t see how is her find the blood trace while a report of a dog killed as random. Yeo Jin’s smartness is unlike Shi Mok but that doesn’t mean she’s not intelligent. I have found her to be very astute in observations and quick on the uptake.
As for finding her not active in solving the cases, I don’t know if we are watching the same show. Even if we can’t agree on Yeo Jin’s intellect or credit in solving the cases, I think it’s quite indisputable that Yeo in played a big role from day one to the end.

@outofthisworld, I completely agree that FOS is way better than every other crime dramas they ever made in Korean drama industry. Maybe I watched too many crime dramas cause it didn't surprised me. I give FOS 9/10, Tunnel (5/10, liked the detectives characterisation but the criminal was a weak carbon copy of IRY), Signal (4/6 too predictable and LJH terrible acting), I Remember You (5/10, liked the villain, detectives/cops were very cartoonish), Criminal Minds (4.5/10 I like the main trio, everything else is such a mess)... I'm really happy with current focus of dramaland on crime dramas but I really hope they avoid over-dumping cops and too many unethical tropes, and akward mixing of rom-com and crime (e.g. STWDBS and SP)

I am always happy to have at least one crime drama in a week. Usually I am not that critical until the show tip me over the edge and then I get mad. I'll probably drop CM this week. And yeah, definitely no mixing of romcom with crime when so far, they have only prove that they can't pull it off.

2

On traveling mode this week so still fine-tuning the timezone to play catch-up with lots of show. Only manage to keep up with:

School 2017: Gosh this show had my heart and soul. Never thought I would be this invested on such a simple show (with lots of flaws), but I'm all about the heartss and this show gave me exactly that - and then more (Tae Woon's arm veins).

Father is Strange: The slowly developed romance of Joong Hee and Mi Young left me grinning like a fool and makes my heart flutter. I love their awkwardness so totally agree with @javabeans, up the romance game show!!

Seven Day Queen : The best saeguk drama. 'nuff said.

The King Loves : Rin forever and ever. ❤️

School 2017: The only drama that excites me to eagerly wait for new episode now that SDQ is over. Please no love triangle, I just wanna see Eun Ho x Tae Woon, and maybe other secondary couples like Sarang and guitar oppa or idol oppa, and Dae Hwi x Nam Joo.

Reunited Worlds : Hae Sung's moments with his siblings and friends are what make me stick to this drama. Gong Ju is too cute btw!

I'm behind in BotWG (mianhae Habaek-nim,I've neglected you for two weeks) and Criminal Minds. I'm so excited to start Strongest Deliveryman and Rescue Me! As for Falsify, I don't know whether or not to start that drama. Any review from beanies? Is it worth it to start Falsify?

I always watch School 2017 first, and only watch TKL during weekend or on weekdays if I've time. School 2017 excites me with all the fluffy and swoony moments of OTP. As for TKL, I don't hate that drama, but I don't love it either. I just like that drama and it's watchable to me. And yesss, Rin is the best. ❤️ Dan has slowly entered my heart with her cuteness and innocence. I don't want her to suffer from evil political agenda between Queen and her ambitious second brother, Jeon.

Last week someone used the emoticon to express her feeling about her shows so I'm following her step lol.

I can't wait to see Manhole next week, to see if it is actually hilarious or not. And also my fav Kim Nam Gil will be back! I put Reunited Worlds on hold for now, yet to start Criminal Minds & I don't know when I'll start it. bot really feeling to start it sooner.

Planning to start re-watching Joseon X Files tonight! Today is like a sageuk day for me, I'm re-watching Moon Geun Young's parts in Empress Myeongseong and Kim So Eun & Park Eun Bin's parts in Empress Cheon Chu, just to reminisce some good old memories.

Haha, just curious what caused your sageuk allergy?

Joseon X files is just a perfect for me, 12 epi with around 45 mins each epi. I don't mind to see more thriller & crime solving cases in sageuk theme as well, like Police Chosun - older generations might not really like it but I think it can attract more younger generations & I'll be happy to watch it. Maybe writer of FOS can try this genre? I have high hope for her.

Tbh, I don't know myself why I have that particular allergy. Maybe it's just hard for me to find the story from that era relatable. It's just so different from our lives at the moment and I had a difficult time emphatizing with the characters. But mixing it with a bit of fantasy always help, so I think I'll check out Joseon X-Files.

ah, for me personally prefer sageuk than modern because I could re-watching it anytime in future without feeling old lol.
sometimes something about fashion, makeup, cellphone from old dramas reminisce me how fast time has flies.

1

It makes sense. Some of my friends also dislike sageuk, due to the political parts. I have some allergy of some these days' sageuks, so I rather re-watch old sageuk. What I loved with old sageuk because it feels more story-telling than most of current ones. I'm not a history lover, but somehow sageuk managed to attract my interest. Although it was romcom who made me kdrama lover, but sageuk is the genre who gives me some good feeling as kdrama lover.

1

@gadis Have you tried Seven Day Queen? I too have some sort of sageuk allergy and even if I can watch historical shows from other countries, I cannot watch Korean and I am unaware of the reason. However, Seven Day Queen is the first sageuk that I could watch completely and with immense interest. It is different than the other sageuks and has strong acting, direction and story. It has clearly made into my favorite dramas of this year. Do try it. It might reduce your allergy too

Actually I'm halfway reading SDQ's recaps right now. It's a good sageuk, but I don't feel the urge to watch it. Too much court politics and the tragic nature of the love story isn't helping either. Besides, fantasy is my best friend when watching sageuk. (That's why I love Arang and Mirror of the Witch to bits)

Court politics is one of the reason why i stay away from sageuks but this show does it right. It embeds the female lead within the court politics and for once it makes a lot of sense. Moreover Lee Dong Gun is very strong in his portrayal of the king, I haven't seen such a king in kdramas atleast that can properly shutup his ministers. Plus, even if the show is a crying fest, it balances it so well that even by the end I didn't feel that the story was supposed to be tragic. Infact it wasn't tragic for me at all because they gave a different angle to the tragedy.
JB and GF are great recappers but I personally feel that watching a show is an entirely different experience specially with SDQ ( you won't be able to grasp LDG's charachter specially unless you saw him act).
I hope if not now, you might be interested to watch SDQ some time later because it is worth a try.

Father Is Strange: I'm behind on this show (am on episode 28), but I'm already head-over-heels in love with the positivity surrounding Joong-hee; that birthday meal the Byun family surprised him with and him struggling to hold back his tears made MY tears fall down my face. Props to Lee Joon for playing this character so well! On a side note, can I marry Lee Yuri and her closet? Everything that woman wears is on point. She's my role model.

Suspicious Partner: Kyaaa, jealous puppy Noh Ji-wook is here! Call me sadistic or whatever, but I absolutely delight Ji-wook's jealous angst. It's amazing seeing him suffer when Bong-hee told him she won't like him anymore, and I like the way he's starting to slowly realize and regret his previous rejection of her. Also, Eun-hyuk is such a sad character that all I wanna do is wrap him up in a comfortable blanket and feed him chocolate. (That birthday cake, though!) In addition, the murder case is getting more interesting - Chan-ho looked like a mouse caught in a trap, and I'm interested in how he's going to get himself out of it.

The Best Hit - I. LOVE. THIS. SHOW. I LOVE THIS SHOW. I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS SHOW! (♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡) I know I should probably write coherent sentences, but whatever, I'm too in love with show. Ddabong is amazing, the jokes are on point and this show just makes me feel warm inside. NEVER LEAVE ME, SHOW. NEVEEER!

Ruler-Master of the Mask: If I had to describe the 2 episodes (4 half-episodes) that I vociferously consumed in a day, it would be that Ruler is densely packed. So densely packed, in fact, that I'm sorta scared to continue now - will we even have enough story material left? What will Prince Sun even do now? That's not to say that the first 2 episodes were awful - it was the opposite, in fact. Yoo Seung-ho's eyes were so expressive and earnest, even when he's wearing a mask, and I love his vulnerability as a struggling Crown Prince. Kim So-hyun was reliably good as Ga-eun, and I love her snarkiness towards the Crown Prince and her iron will, even after her father's death (although she does err on the side of recklessness sometimes; wielding a sword against several palace swordsmen and announcing that you're going to kill the Crown Prince isn't exactly good revenge). Even L isn't bad here, though he could do with less shouty shouts. Shouts make emoting doth not! The only thorn here is Yoon So-hee, whose acting is so bad and her line delivery so scattered that I internally wince when she appears onscreen. Overall though, I'm interested and hooked. Continue on with your glory, Show!

Forest of Secrets: OK, everyone (and I mean, EVERYONE) has been raving and praising and recommending this show and I finally caved in. The first episode - oh, man, what a pilot! Hwang Shi-mok was an intriguing character, and even though he can't feel any emotions, I can still see his calculating brain and sometimes even a pinprick of pity or shock, etc. Bae Doo-na's acting...

Forest of Secrets leaves such a void in my drama watching life that even though I'm craving for more crime dramas to fill that emptiness up, I can't seem to get into any of the ongoing crime-thrillers. Falsify looks like something I can retry later when I'm in the mood, though, so I'll be keeping it on my watch list. As for now, I'm revisiting a few old true crime shows like Forensic Files, Cold Case Files and FBI Files to learn a bit more about different aspects of crime solving.
School 2017, despite its flaws, is adorable and I'm enjoying riding along with Eun Ho. Sure the show can use a little bit more realism, but it's still very entertaining for me.
Strongest Delivery Man Not much happened in the first episode, but I like CSB and KGP so I'll stick around for a bit longer. Also, one of the rare dramas where I can see men fanboying over the heroine. Usually it's the other way round. Glad for the change!

7 day queen-It is a masterpiece, so close to perfection, the writing, acting, production, directing etc. It is the best show I have watched this year, they deserve awards for this so fingers crossed. It was so heartfelt, heartbreaking, romantic, epic and thrilling. I was scared about watching this show at first but it became an absolute crack drama, so fully engrossing. The love the leads had for each other was so selfless, they were devoted to each other and they must be one of the great OTPs of all time. One of my favourite shows and one of the best shows I have ever seen for this year and all years. I wept afterwards and ended up getting a teddy bear for comfort which I have not touched for years. It really touched my heart.

Reunited Worlds-I find it fun and enjoyable but not really that impressive or different really. I am writing reviews for it so I am still watching (but I am a little behind so..).

Hyori's homestay as heartwarming and fun as ever and Father is strange I am behind on it but I am happy that there is no serious drag and the show is still funny and touching.
Now starting Strongest Deliveryman and rewatching BOF.

I'm still watching the Water God mainly because of the writer of Misaeng... and I'm wondering if it is the weaker writing or more directing which doesn't capture the writers' ideas and visions... I'm more inclined for the latter (as I'm also not impressed with the general acting... in a sense that I think they all can do better)... though can be both :--)

I do still enjoy the drama and I think it is getting better... but I just expected more (as I loved Misaeng so much...).

I am loving this Habaek drama and watching it mostly for its romance. This department is still promising with gorgeous, romantic shots, as the trademark of its director. IMO comparing Habaek in Misaeng could be deceiving. Just because the scriptwriter is the same person but the sources are very different, because both were adapted from two mangas with two different writers. I am not blaming the manga's writer as the weak one but the story came from a totally different genre from Misaeng. Unlike Misaeng which was rich with life lesson and almost neglecting its love story, Bride of Habaek's main attraction is its love story, That's why you got the longing stare of Habaek towards So-ah in close ups, the dewy night where they kissed for the first time, and that romantic pastel pink dress under the tree. I am just so carried away with their painful love...

School 2017-enjoying this so much more than I did at the beginning. The chemistry between the leads and the broken bromance totally make up for the almost cartoonish world our characters live in.

Hi-fi, odiletantte, I am a fan of Agatha Christie's too and murder on the Orient express is my most favourite book of hers. I still remember the thump-thump-thump of my heart beat when I was reading towards the end. I don't usually reread murder mysteries because it's no fun once you know who the killer is, but that book is the only exception. I don't watch variety shows (not because I have anything against them, just because I already spend too much time watching dramas, I don't want to get sucked into the world of variety too). But, if it's something like murder on the Orient express, maybe I ll try that episode alone.

Both the dramas I was watching (seven day queen and forest of secrets) ended this week *sob*. they started strong and ended strong. Dropped bride of the water god, lost interest. So, basically I am without dramas now. Planning on watching manhole and strongest deliveryman. Also wondering whether to start school 2017. That would round out the week for me, with one episode per day. But, since both the shows I recently finished left a strong impression on me, I feel like I need to muster up more energy than I normally need to start a new drama.

Just a thought, if both main leads decided to give up their fight for the country and chose their romance instead, I might not love this drama as much as I do now. Their sacrifice is what made me feel more heartbroken and at the same time proud of their decision to choose greater thing.

Water God´s bride: Impossible love... Frustrating. The story is difficult to understand, the end will be sad, but the meantime is also sad!!!!! :(

Reunited World: Impossible love again, less frustrating. The story is ok, the end will be sad as well, and the meantime... well, it is a mixture. It has some more happy moments, i think... But it leaves me always in a crisis...

And that´s all. I am still thinking which drama to rewatch for the theme of the month, but haven´t decided yet...

Also, I finally found a job, so, i will be busy... Let´s see how many shows I could keep on watching up from now....

The King loves - wasn't sure of starting but voila, it's such a simple & easy to watch show with just enough juicy bits & mild political games (means evil guys always get thwarted), cute love triangles at play, handsome, adorable, strong bodyguards in the shadow & sassy heroines. The actors pulled off well in their roles & the music score is something else. It is a pleasant surprise really.

Bokura no Gohan wa Ashita de Matteru - Simple story, Unique Main characters. Boring. Happy End. A bit of noble idiocy. Still a 1 time watch movie. The movie kind makes you upset and feel low and that's what our Hero is going through.
OkJa - The Villainess - have yet to complete both.

PRIDE - is mentioned sometimes here and i'm at episode 3. Complex hero with good voice. Complex relationship between hero and heroine.

Code Blue 3 - YUI ARAGAKI - wow i can expect some non-romance romance now. Aizawa's - You're Interesting dialogue gave new wings to the hope of some romance.

School 2017 - 5th is the best directed and written episode of the show. still 6.5/10
The King Loves - meh meh meh. 6/10

DeliveryMan - Watching it now

Waiting for - ManH and Save Me.

CMK - drama, focus on your strengths.

FIS - I cried with Unnie. Her words might have hurt Mom & Dad but knowing her character she didn't say them out of spite.I'm so glad she came for Dad.

NJTTW S4 - no words but ❤ for this show

FoS - gosh show, thank you for that awesome ride.May we come across another drama like you soon.

FBND - project rewatch that convinced me that I should give PSH's other dramas a chance.YSY is just crazy good.

Waiting for Strongest Deliveryman's Ep 2 before I start it.

What I'm watching:
The Bride of Habaek

What I wish I had enough time to be watching:
Misaeng, Chicago Typewriter, and even Forest of Secrets because everybody has nothing but praise for it.

Funny because I had no intentions of watching BOTWG, until a close friend told me she enjoyed it despite the choppiness. I'm actually relieved to say that I have more issues with the directing than with the acting. I'm also strangely moved by the star-crossed lurve (or the idea of it anyway). A bit surprised to read that Javabeans doesn't like Gong Myung here, but I think there's no dispute that Im Joo-hwan steals this show.

Same friend is also downloading Chicago Typewriter for me so hopefully I can devour that one soon.

All these mentions of Chicago Typewriter has the OST "Satellite Love" stuck in my head again. Not that it's a bad thing, mind you.

Forest of Secrets: this is when a drama is more than a drama, but an experience. This is also when a drama not only entertains but impresses. A week later, I'm still thinking about it - the characters, the acting, the direction, the story, and the message.

Bride of the Water God: Really frustrated with all the gods, especially Bi-ryum. I can't believe these know-nothings are gods. Stop messing up Hu-Ye and So-Ah's lives and stop making them feel bad.

School 2017: Had my reservations in the beginning, but now I'm in love. The pressures the teens face are depressing, but I love the glimmers of hope that X and Teacher Shim provide. That evaluation scene made me feel warm and fuzzy inside.

Father is Strange: Ditto everything that @javabeans said. So. many. feels. I really don't want to say goodbye to this family. Now that dad's gone to turn himself in, I'm on pins and needles. Please let everyone be okay and let Joong Hee and MY finally date.

Criminal Minds: I want to love it. Lee Jun Ki and Moon Chae Won! Now I'm settling for somewhere between I sort-of like it and at least I don't dislike it. Everything -writing, directing, and even some of the acting- feels like a rough first draft to me. And definitely not enough profiling.

I only watch two dramas currently due to the lack of time. It's a sad cause, definitely

Forest of Secrets
Watched it until episode 3 and I don't feel that sense of urgency yet to finish watching each episodes. It actually took me more than two days to finish an episode. Maybe this is due to the time constraint or I'm just not that interested in the storyline yet. Sure, it's interesting, a murder that happened where everyone is a plausible suspect, and it's actually entertaining, so I wonder why it took me so long to finish an episode. Maybe I'm not at that episode yet when I have to watch the next episode soon, but I'm sure I will

Bride of Water God
This is the drama that I actually like. Maybe it's because I'm watching it directly through TVN (the cable TV at my home played the drama at the same time it was played in Korea, and it's in my language too!) but I don't get bored watching it. My parents actually enjoy it too and we watch it together every Monday-Tuesday. I love Nam Joo-hyuk here, despite not liking him in School and Bok-ju. I think that he's perfect as God and his loveline with Shin Se-kyung is so believable to me. Can't wait for next episode to air!

Father Is Strange: Joong Hee found his smile again! I invested too much feelings on this drama lol

Criminal Minds: Korean version Reid is really pain to watch. Even the cameo, the villains character played by Kim In-kwon & Kim Won Hae outshine him lol... I'm gonna drop this drama if it is not for Lee Junki..

Watched episode ten of Woman of Dignity yesterday. I have nothing insightful to say, just that I am newly amazed at how cheap it must be to get the rights to rock classics over in Korea. I was impressed enough when A Wife's Credentials used the Byrds and Jane Birkin, but I was not expecting to encounter Perfect Day by Lou Reed in a kdrama. I guess that's not as shocking as, say, Heroin would be. But Lou Reed! In a kdrama! It is a beautiful song.

Sorry, random comment is random haha.

@juniper,

Your mention of Lou Reed's "Perfect Day" tickled a neuron. I'd heard it not long ago as background music in a Kdrama. Doggone if it wasn't in the special episode of ROMANTIC DOCTOR, TEACHER KIM.

It never ceases to amaze me how much great background music I've heard in certain Kdramas. I get distracted and end up searching lyrics to identify ear worms. ;-)

they don't always pay to use the songs/music... if they play less than 30 seconds, it is considered public domain or something.

False. All songs used in any drama or variety show have already been paid for via a general license through ASCAP, BMI or KOMCA, or else the production would get slapped with a cease-and-desist and notice to remove. Doesn't matter how small a snippet is used; the work is still protected through those three copyright entities. Nothing is ever free.

it shouldn't be free, but they get away with it.

i heard a Kenny G xmas song playing in Nine: Nine Times Time Travel (in the coffee shop) and asked him if they paid him. he said "No", explained the 30 second thing - and said it would be too troublesome to go after them for payment because it's an international production.

I always associate that song with Trainspotting lol.

I knoooow. Some dramas have unbelievable OST's. For example, if I remember correctly, Ruler of Your Own World used songs by Prince (Purple Rain I think (!!)) and King Crimson, in addition to some amazing Korean indie music.

I always enjoy it when a song I like shows up in a K-drama. A good OST adds a lot to a drama. I remember "White Christmas" having a great soundtrack which opened with Debaser by the Pixies and also had Venus in Furs by The Velvet Underground. I do wonder how they were able to use all of that music.

If only American TV didn't have to pay through the nose ;__; I remember it was such a huge deal when Mad Men got a Beatles song. It cost $230,000 for maybe a minute or two of Tomorrow Never Knows, which isn't exactly their most commercial offering. Crazy.

But yeah, it makes me strangely happy when writers and directors seem to share my taste in music. I know western music is a global cultural force, but somehow hearing my favorite bands in dramas is reassuring. Like my obsession with Korean television isn't totally parasitic/one-sided, or something.

Starting today, I will be without wi-fi for a full week, so no catching up on currently airing dramas for me. It's a travesty, but I downloaded the first half of I Hear Your Voice to do a rewatch, so at least I'll have Lee Bo-young and Lee Jong-suk to console me

SEVEN DAY QUEEN is the best saeguk/historical of all time... Just pure perfection-classic -masterpiece!!.... The only drama that has all the great elements, no plot holes..... And the OST's just the lyrics alone will tell the drama itself.... Now, it seems that other kdramas are all "trash" now sorry, don't know what to watch next... FOS is recommended but just by 30 mins of, not really my type.... Maybe I need some comedy, so will try Strongest Deliveryman...

Forest of secrets : too bad this one has already ended. But Jo Seungwoo's acting here, tempts me to try God's Gift 14 days. Should I?

Criminal minds : try this one coz I'm a fan of criminal drama. The first episode is a mess, get better at the second but then the third and fourth are quite disappointing. Yep yep... it's ridiculous how most of the scene are looking cool in uniform but no appropriate action scene. The scene where KKH's wife is killed is the stupidest one. Totally makes no sense.

Falsify : Better than CM but rather bland after watching FoS. Han Mu Young's character is not strong enough(?). I don't know how to express it in words.

God's Gift wasn't great for one reason, that's all I am going to say without spoiling it for you. However, there are other reasons to watch it. Lee Bo Young and of course JSW were fantastic in it. The drama had me on the edge for a good half of the series.

Exactly. God's Gift could become a really great thriller if not for the last 10 or so minutes. But the journey is still very satisfying. In fact, I'm rewatching it right now. Jo Seung-woo speaking in satoori is to die for.

It's honestly really fun to watch just to see Jo Seung Woo in a completely different, but equally charming character. Even I'm tempted to watch some of his scenes again...

I've never been able to watch or acknowledge the ending though.

Ugly Duckling : Don't : It was cute and sweet; Not the best acting but fresh :)

Joseon X-Files : I was craving for sci-fi dramas and decided to watch this germ !

Falsify : It's interesting to see the corruption from reporters point of view. I'm getting more invested every week.

Criminal Mind : This week was Son Ho Joo's week and Ahjussi broke my heart !

The King Loves : I wanted that Won-San-Rin moments could last until the end. For now I'm all for Rin. I want him to be happy with his friend and the woman he loves without disaster but it's impossible.

Reunited Worlds : Hae Sung and his squad back together was so great ! The sisters' reactions to Hae Sung was a let down. Actually people accepted his reappearance too quickly like they were not surprised. I wish the show would spend more time on the family and Hae Sung as an uncle is precious.

Seven Day Queen : I have 5 episodes left! I'm glad I can binge watch and feel everything at once. The pain is so good !

School 2017 : Oh boy Dae Hwi... why does he go around breaking my heart ? I want all the injustice to be repair by the end of the show.

Bride of the Water God : Im Joo Hwan's sweet-to-evil acting strikes again ! Can he play the lead one day ?
