School 2017: Episode 13
by hanshimi
Oh my gosh, this show. This show, y’all. It makes me so happy. Today the sentiment of reconciliation spreads across all of our characters—old friends and new, students and teachers, friends and crushes. With a web of love, friendship, and loyalty that strong, even the most corrupt and spidery of administrations doesn’t stand a chance.
EPISODE 13 RECAP
Tae-woon and Eun-ho beam at each other on the school steps, reveling in their first moments of being an official couple. Aw, their happy is making me happy.
Eun-ho goes home that night to find her parents drinking outside in celebration—they’ve tracked down the friend who ran off with their money! Mom and Dad explain that although he can’t return the money right away, he’s promised to pay it back little by little on the first day of each month.
At the words “first day,” however, Eun-ho giddily recalls that today is her first day as Tae-woon’s girlfriend. Hee. As Eun-ho giggles to herself, Mom and Dad stare at her in bemusement, misinterpreting her happiness as relief that they’ve found Dad’s friend.
In her room that night, Eun-ho practically melts in lovestruck glee as she reenacts every moment of the confession. Squealing in excitement, she rolls around in bed, tracing hearts into her pillow. Tae-woon, meanwhile, recalls the same scene very differently, stepping out of the shower with his shirt unbuttoned indecently and rocking out to Bangtan Boys’ “Boy in Luv” as he relives Eun-ho’s confession and does an embarrassing victory dance. LOL.
When Tae-woon calls Eun-ho that night, she answers shyly as she asks what he wants, clearly expecting a cute, romantic answer. In return, however, Tae-woon replies: “I want to order some chicken delivery.” HA. He coos that he misses chicken so much that he can’t sleep tonight if he doesn’t get chicken. Eun-ho threatens to beat him with a chicken leg and hangs up, muttering to herself: “Chicken? Ha!”
Cut to: Eun-ho sneaking into the kitchen to steal some chicken for Tae-woon. Unfortunately, Eun-ho’s brother catches her red-handed, and starts to tattle to Mom until Eun-ho quickly bribes him to stay quiet.
When she sneaks out of the house with the chicken in hand, however, Tae-woon is already waiting outside the restaurant with a knowing grin. Flustered, Eun-ho insists that she was just on a delivery elsewhere, but he sees right through her lie.
She pouts, telling him not to tease her like that, but he suddenly cuts her off. “I wanted to see you,” he says. Cradling her face in his hands, Tae-woon continues, “I couldn’t sleep because I wanted to see you so much. I wanted to see… the chicken, so much.” LOL.
Exasperated, Eun-ho starts to throw punches in his direction, but he catches her by the wrists and teases her some more until they’re half-wrestling, half-dancing in a fit of giggles. Ahhhhh so cute.
In voiceover, Sa-rang says: “Relationships between people tell you what kind of person they are. As someone once said, ‘Relationships start to crack not from big incidents, but from trivial misunderstandings.'” As Sa-rang narrates, we see Eun-ho get up from her seat to reach out to her new friend Bo-ra, while Sa-rang and Young-gun watch the interaction in discomfited silence.
The next morning, Sa-rang and her mother watch Tae-woon push Eun-ho against the wall behind the school. They’re only flirting, bickering about just exactly how handsome he is—but to Sa-rang from afar, it looks like he’s bullying her. Horrified for Eun-ho’s safety, Sa-rang grabs a broom and charges at Tae-woon, yelling at him to stop bothering her friend. LOL.
Eun-ho hurries to stop Sa-rang from attacking him, mortified as she confesses that Tae-woon is her boyfriend. At Eun-ho’s words, Tae-woon turns up his swagger and smirks at Sa-rang, repeating, “Boyfriend.” Ha.
Eun-ho finally spills everything to Sa-rang, explaining that Tae-woon was actually X all along, and that they started dating yesterday. Eun-ho apologizes for having kept such big secrets for so long, but Sa-rang just asks if Tae-woon is a good guy. When Eun-ho immediately goes on and on about every one of his good qualities, Sa-rang smiles sadly as she listens.
Later that day, Sa-rang goes to the gang’s hideout for the first time, only to find that Dae-hwi and Bo-ra are already familiar with the place. As she watches Dae-hwi and Bo-ra study and Eun-ho tease Tae-woon about a picture she drew of him, poor Sa-rang sighs to herself, looking awfully lonely and left out.
In the classroom, Bit-na’s rich friends ask Nam-joo about her dad’s company again. Nam-joo nervously avoids answering, but when she asks why they’re asking, they reply nastily, “We just wanted to see how much you made up.” Eep.
Bit-na glares at Nam-joo, asking if she really thought they wouldn’t find out about her lies. Dae-hwi walks in at that moment and demands to know what’s going on. The rich kids tell him that they did nothing wrong before announcing to the whole class that Nam-joo is a liar.
Humiliated beyond words, Nam-joo scurries out of the room in tears, with Dae-hwi hot on her tail. He tries to tell her that the truth was bound to come out anyway, but Nam-joo tells him to buzz off, and that she’s fine with dropping out of this horrible school.
Dae-hwi returns to the classroom to find the rich kids hanging outside the door, gossiping about Nam-joo. When one of them stops Dae-hwi to ask whether he broke up with her because of her lies, Dae-hwi grabs him by the collar in fury: “Is this fun for you?” he growls. He threatens to kill them if they run their mouths again.
As Dae-hwi storms away, Tae-woon slams into the kids from behind, offering an insincere apology in return. When they confront him, however, Tae-woon immediately challenges them: “Want to try me?” Damn. The rich kids quickly back down, and Tae-woon returns to his seat, giving Dae-hwi a comforting pat on the back as he passes. So sweet.
Later, Tae-woon finds Dae-hwi on a bench outside and tosses him a cold drink. Sitting beside him in silence, Tae-woon consoles him with his silent companionship.
Officer Han runs into Young-gun with her rebel friends that day, reminding her that it’s time for work. Young-gun starts to refuse, but finally gives in when Officer Han threatens to blab about their smoking habits.
Just as Young-gun starts to leave with Officer Han, however, Bo-ra runs into her on the steps. Bo-ra commends Young-gun for allegedly catching a purse-snatcher, but Young-gun just snaps at her not to speak to her before storming away. As Bo-ra sighs in disappointment, Officer Han applauds her valiant attempt and encourages her to keep trying: “If you keep knocking, the door will open someday,” she says.
Sa-rang trudges home at the end of the day, looking as depressed and lonely as ever. Thankfully, Kyung-woo catches up to her, ruffling her hair and noting her bad mood. Seeing Issue walking by at that moment, Kyung-woo tells her that he knows exactly what will help. As Sa-rang watches, Kyung-woo hurries up to Issue to declare that he needs him. Issue blinks at him in confusion.
Cut to: an irritated Issue, watching Sa-rang and Kyung-woo enjoy their drinks at a café. LOL. When Issue asks if he really has to sit here all day, Kyung-woo says, “You can stand if you want.” Issue complains about Kyung-woo’s rude treatment, but Kyung-woo and Sa-rang tell him that all of her worries are melting away because of him.
Kyung-woo asks if Sa-rang is feeling better, and she thanks him with a smile. “You really have a talent for making people feel comfortable,” she tells him. As they smile at each other, poor Issue just glares at them, demanding to know what he’s actually doing there. Lol.
Dae-hwi waits outside Nam-joo’s house until she comes home, but quickly hides before she sees him. He watches in concern as she goes inside.
At lunch the next day, Eun-ho complains that the school lunches seem to be getting smaller and smaller, groaning that she’s craving something delicious to eat. Tae-woon immediately jumps at that, calling her shameless for saying such a thing in front of the others: “You’re obviously asking me to buy you something delicious tomorrow, just the two of us, since it’s the weekend!”
Eun-ho hisses at him to shut up, but Tae-woon just stands, loudly telling her to dress up tomorrow before leaving. Hee. Eun-ho stares in embarrassment before chasing after him to beat him up. At the table, Bo-ra smiles at their antics before turning to see Sa-rang looking lonely and depressed again. Aw, baby.
The next day, Eun-ho does her best to dress up for her date with Tae-woon, trying on all sorts of makeup and hairstyles she’s not used to. When she finally gets the hang of it, she smiles at the mirror in satisfaction.
Tae-woon waits for Eun-ho outside when her brother comes by, noting that Tae-woon has been hanging around their house a lot lately and telling him to raise his standards, lol. Just then, Eun-ho comes out of the house, all dolled up, and Tae-woon stares at her slack-jawed and speechless. So. Cute.
After watching a movie together, Tae-woon makes Eun-ho hold the popcorn and both their drinks as they walk back so that he can put his arm around her. When she asks why she has to hold everything, Tae-woon leans over to kiss her on the cheek, telling her: “This is why.”
Flustered by his smooth moves, Eun-ho scurries away in embarrassment, grinning from ear to ear while wailing that they’re moving too fast, ha.
They play a street darts game for prizes, and Tae-woon misses every target while Eun-ho hits every one. He pouts and insists that it’s because he’s not concentrating, while Eun-ho wins a teddy bear prize and rubs it in his face, hee.
Afterward, Tae-woon drives them to peaceful, secluded park on his motorcycle. When Eun-ho asks where they are, Tae-woon explains that it’s where his mother is. He shows her a tall tree with a sign bearing his mother’s name, telling her that she’d died when he was young and that he’d promised his father that they’d only visit her on very happy days. Eun-ho smiles at the implication that today is one of those days.
Standing before the tree, Tae-woon tells Eun-ho to introduce herself to his mother. When she introduces herself by name, Tae-woon silently mouths to the tree: She’s my girlfriend! Awww.
As Eun-ho and Tae-woon sit in the sunny, breezy park, she drifts asleep against his shoulder. Tae-woon smiles at her, stroking away strands of her hair from her face as she sleeps.
At school the next day, Dae-hwi turns to stare at Nam-joo’s empty desk beside him. Eun-ho catches his melancholy expression and sighs to herself.
At lunchtime, Byung-gu heaps praises on X for getting rid of the rank system for lining up to eat lunch. As the others laugh awkwardly at his mention of X, Tae-woon brushes it off, snorting that at least they were well-fed before X showed up. At that, Eun-ho notes that today’s food tastes funny, but no one else seems to notice anything suspicious.
It seems Eun-ho’s suspicions weren’t for naught, however. That afternoon, she clutches her stomach in pain, her skin breaking out in hives. Just as Eun-ho raises her hand to excuse herself, Byung-gu beats her to it and excuses himself to hurry out to the bathroom. Tae-woon quietly notices Eun-ho clutching her stomach in pain.
That afternoon, Sa-rang’s mom notes the lunch workers take off for the day, carelessly tossing the trash outside. Annoyed by their carelessness, Sa-rang’s mom starts to take care of the boxes herself when she notes discarded food wrappers with long-expired dates on them. She stares at them in horror.
Clutching the garbage and proof of the expired food, Sa-rang’s mom frantically barges into Principal Yang’s office to show him the expiration dates of the food served today. But Principal Yang just tells her to mind her own business as a cleaning lady and to stop wasting his time. She quietly leaves.
That evening, Eun-ho’s family frets over her hives and food poisoning, wondering if something was wrong with the school lunch. Dad notes that there are reports of expired school cafeteria food on the news recently, and Eun-ho agrees that lunch has been meager recently.
The next morning, Sa-rang’s mom returns to Principal Yang’s office with the food wrappers, this time dressed in formal clothing instead of her cleaning uniform. She declares that she’s here as a parent, not an employee, and insists that he promise to conduct a formal investigation.
Principal Yang tells her that she has no right to complain against the school that pays her, adding that something bad could happen to Sa-rang if she keeps this up. Shaken by the veiled threat, Sa-rang’s mom immediately hurries out. Watching her leave in disapproval, Principal Yang notes that she’ll be an even bigger pain if he fires her, and picks up the phone to call the cleaning company. Oh no.
Sa-rang’s mom starts to leave when she runs into her supervisor. He thanks her for her hard work before offering her a fat envelope full of money, calling it a bonus. She starts to refuse him before he suddenly urges her not to mess with the system. Reminding her about Sa-rang’s well-being in a roundabout way, he forces the money onto her, hurrying away before she can give it back. Sa-rang’s mom stares after him in shock and horror, speechless at the condescending treatment.
At the hideout that afternoon, Sa-rang tells the others that all of the lunch food was expired. Bo-ra realizes that Eun-ho’s sickness yesterday must have been because of the expired food, and Eun-ho turns to see Tae-woon deep in thought.
That evening, Tae-woon goes to his father to ask him to investigate the food service company. Director Hyun, however, tells him that there’s no problem—the food company that serves their school is a long-time business partner of his. (Of course it is.)
Tae-woon buys Eun-ho a sandwich for lunch the next day because she’s uncomfortable with eating the school lunch. She worries that the other kids might get sick as well, and Tae-woon agrees that they can’t just sit idly by.
That night, Tae-woon sneaks into the school dressed as X. Just as he heads into the cafeteria, however, someone grabs him by the shoulder—it’s Dae-hwi, Eun-ho, Bo-ra, and Sa-rang, all dressed in black X hoodies! Aw, yesss. Eun-ho scolds him for trying to do this alone, and Tae-woon calls them a bother, though he’s grinning at them.
Our five Xs sneak into the kitchen, digging through the refrigerators to find piles and piles of expired food. Plugging their noses in disgust, they find packages over a year old and take video recordings of all of their findings.
Unfortunately, Dae-hwi backs up to get a better camera angle when he accidentally knocks over a ladle, creating a loud disturbance. Oh no.
Sure enough, Officer Han and Young-gun are on patrol nearby when they freeze at the sound. They hurry toward the kitchen, and our five Xs hurry to take cover. As Tae-woon and Eun-ho squeeze between the refrigerators, she stammers that he’s too close, while Tae-woon just quips that it’s extra nice being X today.
The kids hold their breath as Officer Han shines her flashlight through the kitchen. She comes closer and closer… until Young-gun finds the ladle on the floor. Appeased by the explanation for the sound, Officer Han and Young-gun finally leave.
As soon as they’re gone, the five Xs regroup to catch their breath. When Tae-woon notes that his heart was racing, Sa-rang wonders why he was so nervous when he’s done this so many times before. Tae-woon just gives Eun-ho a suggestive grin. Lol.
Dae-hwi suggests that they leave now while the coast his clear, but Tae-woon shakes his head: “We wouldn’t be X if we just left, right?” he smirks.
The next day, the kitchen staff finds the rotten, expired food strewn all over the kitchen, accompanied with a note written in ketchup: “Don’t play with food. -X” Hee, brilliant. As an enraged Principal Yang takes in the scene in fury, cursing X, Vice Principal Park informs him that they have more dire problems than the state of the kitchen—namely, the slew of delivery people here with dozens of boxes of restaurant lunches.
The delivery people crowd into Principal Yang’s office, filling the room with box after box of takeout food and demanding that he pay up. When a livid Principal Yang insists that he didn’t order the food, they insist that the number came from the school, and that the customer even had the same way of speaking as Principal Yang. Ha.
And so every student in the school ends up getting a bowl of delicious jajangmyun, rejoicing at the unexpected treat. When Dae-hwi asks Tae-woon what happened, he just brushes it off, simply noting that it’s nice to have good food. In flashback, however, we see that Tae-woon had been the one to call for delivery, making the call from Principal Yang’s office (and flawlessly adopting his way of speech).
Tae-woon tells his friends to eat a lot before teasing Eun-ho for eating too much. Eun-ho smiles cutely back at him and asks, “But I’m pretty even when I eat a lot, right?” Lol, I love her.
Meanwhile, Officer Han gives Teacher Shim an earful in private, insisting that the school is a mess and that they can’t just sit by while X destroys the school. Teacher Shim panics at that, insisting that innocent kids will get hurt if it’s revealed that X is the director’s son. Officer Han, however, snaps that they can only know the consequences when they occur, and begs him to think about things from her perspective.
Principal Yang, meanwhile, is busy getting an earful of his own from Director Hyun. The director snaps that parents are most sensitive about food issues, and that the school won’t be able to recover if they take a fall. He orders the principal to find a solution at any cost, even if it means hiring special security forces to catch X.
So Principal Yang recruits Vice Principal Park to fix the issue of the students’ distrust in the administration, reminding him that it’s the only way for them to ensure their safety—otherwise, X might reveal that they and Director Hyun are colluding with the food company. Ugh. Vice Principal Park assures him that he has a plan.
The next day, the students rejoice to see that lunch is a gourmet meal filled with expensive, fresh ingredients. As everyone bustles excitedly at the sight, Principal Yang strolls through the cafeteria with a hearty smile, encouraging the students to eat a lot and study hard.
At the 180 degree turn, our five Xs wonder if they overreacted before. But Tae-woon notes that the school’s unnecessarily kind treatment only makes him feel even more distrustful.
That night, Officer Han patrols the school grounds with Young-gun when they run into Bo-ra outside. Bo-ra quickly explains that she was just studying, but Officer Han asks her to patrol with them for a little exercise.
Without a choice, Bo-ra follows them into the teacher’s office, where Officer Han offers to buy them a snack. When she happens to pull a pair of handcuffs out of her pocket, Bo-ra asks if they’re real, and Officer Han offers to show her. She places the cuffs on Bo-ra’s and Young-gun’s wrists before suddenly realizing that she forgot the keys at the station. Hee. Horrified, Young-gun insists that they go with her to get the keys, but Officer Han waves her off and tells the girls to wait while she fetches the keys.
As an irritated Young-gun and an awkward Bo-ra sit alone in the office, coming to terms with their forced proximity, Officer Han strolls through the halls, pulling out the key from her pocket with a grin: “You have to be together to make up, right?”
As Young-gun yanks her hand away from Bo-ra in annoyance, Bo-ra tells her that she’s fine with the situation since Young-gun would never talk to her otherwise. Weathering all of Young-gun’s insults, Bo-ra tells her that she’s glad she did what she did back then: “If I had the chance to go back, I would do it again.”
Young-gun growls at her to shut up, but Bo-ra continues that betraying her was worth it if it meant saving Young-gun’s life. We learn that Bo-ra had gone to the police to prevent Young-gun from getting into a life-threatening fight—an incident that branded Young-gun a delinquent. Still, Bo-ra insists, Young-gun’s situation now is better than becoming a convicted felon after participating in the fight.
Young-gun stands in fury to retort when Bo-ra’s nose suddenly begins to bleed. At the sight of the blood, Young-gun immediately leads Bo-ra to the bathroom so she can clean up. Young-gun bunches up some tissues and starts to help her out of habit, before catching herself and stuffing the tissues into Bo-ra’s hands for her to do herself.
In flashback, we see that helping Bo-ra with her frequent nosebleeds used to be a routine thing back in the day. In the present, Bo-ra smiles at Young-gun, reminiscing about their history together. Young-gun scowls back.
Teacher Shim runs into the girls as they leave the bathroom, immediately horrified to see the handcuffs around their wrists. When they explain that Officer Han left her key at the station, Teacher Shim notes in confusion that he just saw her in the office. Realizing what she’s done, he quickly leads the girls back to the teachers’ office to free them.
Sure enough, Officer Han is sitting comfortably in the office, browsing her phone, lol. Young-gun confronts Officer Han, but she just brushes it off, asking if anything has changed between them. Bo-ra smiles, saying she was happy with how things went, and Officer Han releases the girls with a knowing look.
Officer Han tells Young-gun to escort Bo-ra home as part of her job as her assistant, and Young-gun scowls back before hurrying out. Bo-ra follows after her.
Once they’re alone, a perturbed Teacher Shim demands to know how Officer Han could treat their students like criminals. But Officer Han argues that the right methods differ for different people, snapping that his incessant criticisms are offensive to her before turning to leave.
At that, Teacher Shim grabs her and immediately apologizes, looking distressed: “I don’t know why I keep acting like this,” he says. “I want to see you smile all the time, but I always make you angry, and it ends up hurting me.” Aww.
At that, Officer Han cuts him off, stepping close so they’re only inches apart, and asks: “Are you apologizing to me, or are you confessing your feelings?” He falls silent, and she takes the chance to kiss him on the cheek right next to his lips before coolly walking off. Omo. Poor Teacher Shim touches his cheek where she kissed him, and then falls over in shock. LOL.
The next morning, Tae-woon notes Eun-ho walking with a depressed-looking Sa-rang and asks what happened. Eun-ho explains that Principal Yang punished Sa-rang’s mom for complaining about the food.
Tae-woon agrees that something is fishy about the administration, guessing that the suddenly improved food quality must be a temporary front until things calm down. Tae-woon decides that they need to punish them once and for all and teach them not to play with their food.
Eun-ho, however, expressly forbids him to act as X, reminding him that Principal Yang is watching like a hawk lately. He starts to brush off her concern, but Eun-ho is adamant, yelling at him not to do anything. At her unexpected anger, Tae-woon meekly agrees.
Eun-ho goes to the empty hideout that night and calls Tae-woon with no luck. She guesses that he must not have listened to her after all, and sure enough, she opens the cabinet drawer to find Tae-woon’s black hoodie missing. She opens the next drawer, however, and finds a spare. Oh boy.
Both Tae-woon and Eun-ho sneak into the school, each dressed as X. When Tae-woon slips into the cafeteria, however, he’s suddenly surrounded by three security guards. Though Tae-woon tries his best to fight them off and get away, he’s outnumbered and overpowered, and though it takes all three of them, they finally pin him down. Eun-ho hears sounds of the struggle and sprints toward the cafeteria.
As they wrestle Tae-woon to the ground, Principal Yang steps forward, giddy that he’s finally caught X. Principal Yang slowwwwly reaches down to peel back Tae-woon’s hood… as Tae-woon grits his teeth helplessly, and Eun-ho stares in horror from the doorway.
COMMENTS
Oh boy, oh boy! I’m thoroughly impressed by how the writers have used the Suspect X plot throughout the story, especially because I’d been concerned with the unexpectedly fast resolution of the mystery in the early stages of the show. But seeing Eun-ho, Tae-woon, Dae-hwi, Bo-ra, and Sa-rang all working together as X in the name of justice in this episode, I was reminded once again of how well this show seems to understand its own story and its trajectory.
It’s funny to remember that X had been nothing more than a faceless figurehead that the students could use as stress relief and gossip fodder, because now, for our main characters, X has become a symbol of their hopes, dreams, and beliefs. At this point, X isn’t external to them—he represents an idea of the often childishly idealistic world they want and deserve to live in. If X (that is, Tae-woon) is caught now, every single one of our characters has something at stake, because each one of them has started to internalize X. I don’t know what Eun-ho plans to do now, but with friends like hers to support her, I do know that no one will be sinking alone—and that’s all I could wish for.
Speaking of friends, I’m totally pleased to see Bo-ra blooming into a happier girl after seeing her miserable for so many episodes. I think that only after becoming friends with Eun-ho and company was she able to regain her confidence as a person, which is why it makes sense that her relationship with Young-gun was only brought up now. The show has become better and better at introducing subplots and backstories, something I’d thought was weak and often awkward in the first few episodes.
Thanks to that renewed strength, I find that almost every character—major or minor, teacher or student—is utilized to their full potential in this show, even the ones I’d thought insignificant or uninteresting in the beginning. It speaks to the show’s assured writing that it uses its very subplots to thread other subplots together. Bo-ra’s meekness and lack of friends ties in with Young-gun’s rebelliousness, which ties into Officer Han’s backstory as a problematic youth, and so on and so forth. While I should really come to expect that kind of interwoven narrative quality from School 2017 at this point, it continues to surprise me with the sheer amount of heart it has left to give.
I especially loved Sa-rang’s voiceover narration in this episode, in which she explained that a rift in a relationship doesn’t usually come from a big incident, but from a small misunderstanding. It reflects beautifully on the progress we’ve made (and stand to make in the final few episodes) on our character development. Just like how Dae-hwi and Tae-woon misunderstood each other’s emotions surrounding Joon-ki’s death, and how Bo-ra and Young-gun misunderstood each other’s priorities, it seems that all of our characters harbor or have harbored those misunderstandings about each other. Even now, those misunderstandings present the biggest obstacles for our classmates: Sa-rang believes that Eun-ho values her less now that she’s found a boyfriend, while Nam-joo believes that no one will accept her unless she’s a rich young socialite. Sometimes, it’s not even a matter of a lack of communication that’s the problem, but an internal struggle that we have to overcome on our own. And what better a time is there than eighteen to struggle with the internal self?
It sounds corny, but I really think that forming this alliance of trust, love, and friendship between each other is the only antidote to fighting the kind of distrust that stems from material valuation of each other. As Principal Yang and Director Hyun crumble under the weight of their own corruption, and Bit-na and her flying monkeys—I mean, friends—see that their relationships are based on appearances rather than feelings, we see that the only ones to survive are the ones who trust and believe in each other. In a way, School 2017 is the perfect idealistic show—full of childish hope, combined with the real-world problems we face every day. It might not be as easy to solve our personal issues in the real world as it is in dramaland, but the lessons are all there, and they’ve never felt more honest.

Tae Woon's Mori was showing lol. The whole time he was kicking and rocking to the music, it didn't even register to me that he had terrible rhythm and dance moves, my whole thought process was how hot he was. (Also that he shouldn't have been wearing any shirt.)

Well let's roll the theme music:
Good morning, Kudo Ran. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, Is to put together a major compilation of TaeWoons nicknames. Your team members have been selected for you, they consist of the Dramabeans Fan Wall, and School 2017 comment posts. You have until the recap post of episode 16 to complete you assignment. As always, should any member of your team be caught or killed, the Secretary will disavow all knowledge of your actions. This message will self-destruct in five seconds.

So I'll get back to the swooning later. I'll leave it in the hands of all the other Beanies whom I trust will do a good job at that.
It feels a bit weird that Heechan is no longer featured in this episode since we've seen a lot of him. I'm just wondering if last week was the end of his story because I kind of want to see a proper closure for him like we had with Bora and Yonggun. But if they decide to sacrifice him for more cute moments (and hopefully and actual kiss) between our OTP, I'm all for that!

I think that Hee Chan will return, unfortunately, though I don't know at this point how he could be any more awful than Tae Swoon's dad.
There was a scene I think it was in the cafeteria where Hee Chan was in the back or at another table and it looked like he was frowning with jealousy. Now I'll have to go back and watch to see which episode he was in.
Since everyone else is getting their moments to be redeemed then it only stands to reason that he will be redeemed and become a (nicer) more humane person. But let's see on that.
I am SO loving this show. Every week is full of surprises at how they continue to flesh out the characters and stories.
love it!!!

Hee-chan should not obtain redemption in just one or two episodes. That would be ridiculous. I understand the pattern you're getting at, but some people have a longer road to go on than others. That's one of the things that annoys me about kdramas sometimes; the absolution of sin without meaningful penance/repentance.

I think it's true that the writer has been checking out beanies' comments and fanwalls because I keep on getting what I want each episode.
1. I wrote on my fanwall back then when this drama premiered ep 1 about not wanting SLS on Dae Hwi, please just let Dae Hwi and Eun Ho have beautiful friendship. They do have a cute friendship now. ✅
2. No love triangle between Tae Woon, Eun Ho and Dae Hwi, just more bromance between Tae Woon and Dae Hwi. ✅
3. When Bora bully case arised, I wanted Eun Ho to be friends with Bora and saved her from any impulsive decision. They're good friends now. ✅
4. When Bora knew about X, I kinda wanted Sarang to be included as well. Both Sarang and Dae Hwi are apart of X gang now. ✅
5. I wanted more of other characters' development especially Sarang & Kyung Woo. The ship is sailing ? And we could see other characters are going on as well. ✅
6. I wanted Bit Na and Hee Chan to go down. Oh yes! ✅
7. Last week, I think most beanies wanted a kiss between Eun Ho and Tae Woon even if it's just cheek kissing. ✅✅✅✅✅?????
Thank you so much writer-nim for giving me all the things that I wanted. Now it's up to you to give us satisfying ending for this drama next week! ?

why is there no kissing in the school franchise even though other school dramas have kisses ( and rather elaborate ones like in the heirs ). Is it trying to advocate that only adults ( ie the teachers ) and university students can kiss on the lips ?? But Tae Woon said in an earlier ep that "even little kids do it" ??♀️ Then why did they include all the prelude of Eun ho not having her first kiss yet if Tae woon is not going to change her status ( and his own cause he was awfully defensive when she asked if he had kissed anyone - although he's a little too smooth to be that innocent haha )

It's amazing! I also wrote last episode that I hoped we would have not too much angst related to the newly-upgraded relationship, but also a lot of cuteness and showing how not only their relationship, but also the relationships around them changes now that they are dating. I loved the subtle and not so subtle differences in how the couple acted together, how the boys acted and how the girls acted differently. And we got to see them be a sort of normal couple, before they at some point inevitably get into an angstfest.
I hope the writer keeps exploring the different dynamics of the character!

I love that Kyungwoo doesn't pry into why Sarang is upset, and just prescribes her a dose of Oppa. A dose of grumpy non-Oppa who has no idea what's going on. We've seen that Kyungwoo is exceptionally observant and perceptive, but I wish we could see more of what motivates him to care so much for Sarang. I know she's a lovable cinnamon roll that you just want to hug and protect, but I want to see it from his point of view, too.
And I don't know if Sarang likes him yet, but she really, really appreciates him. I mean, the way she looks at him! I can't see anyone other than Park Sewan in this role, with her huge sparkly eyes that show her emotions so purely and strongly.

Bless Sa-rang and Kyung-woo but Issue just looks like he's third-wheeling their date. What was the point of him being there LOL. I love how we've the main couple but all these little side friendships/romances make me so happy too.
I always think, how nice would it be if I found someone who looks at me like how Tae-woon looks at Eun-ho? Boy's got it baaaad and it's adorable. I didn't watch this show from the start so this is my first time on a recap, but I just wanted to say how much I appreciate the fact that he's been open and marshmallow-y toward her from the start. The bad-boy-redemption-by-falling-in-love cliche isn't particularly my favourite, and I loooove how he's been such a softie toward her from E1.
Given how it's almost the end I really hope for a nice satisfying ending. TW has such a dysfunctional relationship with his dad and I just think how it would be so much better if the adults would listen to their kids once in a while instead of driving them into a corner. Dad can't even see how EH has been such a positive influence on TW. She gave him some purpose in life at least.

But even more than that, I want an Eun-ho for me. She's literally become my cuteness aesthetic ?? especially when her hair's up in a bun. On that note, I really liked that they brought back the first episode fantasy of her on her dream date wearing nice clothes and the same adorable bun, only now it's real and it's with Tae McSwoonyPants

I find their relationship so interesting because in this episode it's revealed that they actually go further back then I thought and from the previous episodes the impression I got was that Bora used to be at least somewhat popular, although after her relationship with Hee-chan she became an outcast. And like, if Young-gun had been friends with her even back then, then what had their dynamic been like? Was Young-gun also somewhat popular before? If not, and Young-gun had befriended her after what happened with Hee-chan, then why and how did it start? It's unlikely, but now I have so many questions and I don't think they will but I hope at least they'll show how and when their friendship started, and of course, their reconciling, because they are really cute. And also I just really love the idea that many of our characters are becoming a interlinked network of friends. So Good.

Oh I watched this weekend, while waiting eagerly for monday to come, the minidrama series Binggoo and it was so strange to see "Officer Han" to be in double role - a young lady swooning over "Hee-Chan" and a daughter falling for "Tae-woon". Kim Jung-hyun has his hearts in his eyes as Tae-woon for Eun -ho. That's what my friends were telling me about my man when we were dating. But this year it will be so hard to choose the best couple at the awards...

This eps is chock-full of blooming friendships, which makes me giddy. From the companionable silence between Dae-hwi and Tae-woon, Kyung-woo who always knows how to cheer Sa-rang up without any prying questions, the X squad, Byung-gu who just naturally flocked together with Tae-woon's new friends, to Sa-rang and Kyung-woo who took it upon themselves to rope Issue in into their little group.
The rift between Sa-rang and Eun-ho soured things up a bit, but it felt inevitable. Even after Eun-ho said sorry, they never really talked about the elephant in the room. So I'm both glad that the drama is willing to take extra time to address their problem (which is very relatable and therefore extra painful), and also worried about their upcoming argumentation and fallout.
But the thing that made me the happiest this hour came from Bo-ra. I can't believe how much I love her little backstories with Young-gun. It explains why she never confront Young-gun for bullying her after she got her courage back pasca Hee-chan incident. It's admirable of her to keep trying to knock on Young-gun's door, as Officer Han aptly put it, because they both clearly wanted their friendship back. And I just love how insightful Bo-ra is. She kept noticing when Sa-rang felt left out. And maybe I'm reading too much into this, but she was also the one who always keeps Sa-rang company even since they told her about X. (I legit squealed watching Bo-ra comfortably perched on Sa-rang's desk during Nam-joo's confrontatation with those rich brats.) It's kind of understandable though, because she knew full well how painful it was to be an outcast. I just hope that she can become the glue in Eun-ho and Sa-rang's friendship if worse come to worst.

Aside from the cliffhanger other highlights for me were:
* Tae Woon's post shower dance. ??
* His incessant teasing of Eun Ho especially him calling her to deliver chicken again. ??
* Sarang finding EH and TW together and assumed the worse. ?
* Eun Ho confessing to Sarang that Tae Woon is her boyfriend. ??
* EH sharing TW's secret to SR.
* Kyung Woo cheering up Sarang.
* The X Squad in action. ?
* Teacher Shim knowing all along who X is.
* Byung Gu and his love of food.?
* Young Gun and Bo Ra scenes. ?
* Teacher Shim and Officer Han convo. ☺

Yeah, I thought that too. I think Se Jeong and KJH has natural chemistry and it shows onscreen. It's great that the director knows how to create the environment and let the actors take over at appropriate times. It also helps that Se Jeong and KHJ are totally rocking it in their roles.

You've mentioned pd creating good environment and letting the actors take over, have you heard that KSJ and KJH actually chipped in some of their ideas for the ending scene on ep.12? Sejeong suggested that 'one step closer' where she went down to meet him at the eye level then Junghyun suggested the intertwining fingers + pulling her close to him. And i think its one of those heart fluttering moments in kdrama i've ever seen not a kissing scene but has the same effect. Very well done.

❤️ that stolen peck on the cheek!
❤️ Tae Woon bringing Eun Ho to visit his mom and mouthing the words "my girlfriend" ahhhhh!
❤️ when they all came together in the kitchen and officially became the X group
❤️ Bora and Young Gun's scenes are precious too! Our OTP's happy energy is rubbing off on Bora and now Young Gun. I love it! I am hoping Dae Hwi and Nam Joo will reconcile soon as well
❤️ Tae Woon and Dae Hwi's bromance is in full swing! I love how Tae Woon patted Daw Hwi's back and how they shared a drink in silence.

Relationships...foreshadowing a rift between the two, EunHo and Sarang, only? ‼️
Anyway nice to see more girls dressed as ❌ than boys. So if any one plans on making a black hoodie, I recommend going for Teacher Shim's style...short in front and long at the back. { Also I don't usually do this but I recommend the video tutorial by a 'withwendy', don't be fooled tho' she is from Canada and she is Chinese... not Korean. Instead of the white drawstring she uses black in the tutorial, well that's if you're invited to a dress-up party.}
So the only two people I still want to see dressed as ❌ is KyungWoo and Issue. (The character ' Issue ' reminds me of someone but I just can't put my finger on it.) But it looks like that is not gonna happen soon...as sisters are 'dressing up as ❌ for themselves'!!!
So '❌5' roaming the school kitchen and 'vandalizing' it .... altho' I would rather call that payback—is my new favorite thing, just one complaint...why don't I have a complaint?
DaeHwi the genius that he is...and then the ladle falls, like how? Real smooth, I love him more too now.

This was the episode where Daddy Hyun went to the UnRedeemable spot for me. You're covering up the lunch fiasco too? I was willing to cut some slack when I thought it was just protection for his son, or even just ignoring TaeWoon's request for an investigation. Now that we know he is aware and covering it up, well, he can rot with unrepentant HeeChan.

yep, he can rot. He obviously cares about his son/wants to connect with him (the ordering chicken) but at the same time he's abusive to Tae-woon, completely disregards anyone else, and is actively doing harm to his student body by covering up the expired food scandal. Tae-woon deserves better.
Hee-chan is awful but I have some sympathy because he's a kid and was socialised into his attitude. None for Tae-woon's dad though.

I agree. Drama might spring a tear-jerking flashback later on us, but for now I've decided he's nonredeemable and one-dimensional. Until now I thought Daddy Hyun was just an awful parent. Now I'm pretty sure he's a corrupt guy who partners with food companies etc. to get money from running the school. I didn't think the drama would go there and I don't think there is time for a satisfying ending (ie: dad goes to jail along with Principal Yang), so the most likely thing is father and son will mysteriously bond over chicken.

So all this while, they've shown us that he cares about his son a lot, so I don't get it how come he could just ignore about that matter?! What if Tae Woon is the one who got sick? Which parent would be okay to see their kids eating rotten food?!

The charcter that really grew on me in this drama other than Teacher Gu is Officer Han. My initial impression of her was that she served no absolute purpose in this show it her than being Teacher Shim's love interest but boy I was wrong. She's still not very good at her job but she has such a knack for understanding these young girls and helping them. I'm so glad that she was consistent with her encouragement of Yong-gun to pursue something she's good at after seeing her young self in the girl. Only Officer Han is capable of breaking that gruff steel wall she has built around herself imo. Her advice to Bora and Eunho was very thoughtful too. If you ever get fired Officer Han, make sure you apply for a job as a teacher!

You're quite right about officer Han SuJi. I was just thinking about her (Han Sunhwa - the actress) tough, yet still lady-like portrayal of officer Han....was she in her uniform-skirt and some black-highheels when she took out Yong-guns gang in the beginning? As opposed to Yong-gun acting all tough, and then we see what a nice person she really is.
At one point, I thought Han SuJi was only speaking to Eunho as a last minute cohort attempt in alignment with her boss and Yang, to gain information on X. But I think Shim's good heart he has for his students influenced Suji to become more conscience of the similar life struggles of these youths that she, as hinted, used to live as well.

ugh I love this show so much and it sucks that it's ending next week :(
It's not just the OTP, I just love all the characters and they're really well acted and engaging even when it's someone awful like Hee-chan. Tae-swoon doesn't need me to go into further detail (that dancing, HAHAHAHA I see you doing Mori-style kicks), but Eun-ho is killing me too, that fit of giggly Cloud 9 squee as she relived the confession was the actual best. Kim Se-jung is absolutely adorable as Eun-ho, and I have to give her credit for her performance - beyond the cuteness, she actually does emote pretty well, and her and Tae-woon's chemistry is A++.
On screen Eun-ho and Tae-woon might be my favourite part of any given episode, but Dae-hwi's a very close second (and on paper, he'd probably be first). I love how Jang Dong-yoon plays him with so much conflict and repression in every bit of his body language, and I love that they've given Dae-hwi his issues with Hee-chan and a lingering connection with Nam-joo (very plausible irl) and avoided any prospect of the love triangle. Though everyone in this show has A++ chemistry with each other, and I wouldn't have minded a love triangle (I came around to it with warp speed in Sassy Go Go), I love his bromance with Tae-woon too much to want any complications.
The best high school dramas imo are the ones which actually explore friendship in some depth, and School 2017 is no exception. We saw Dae-hwi and Tae-woon break apart spectacularly after Joong-ki's death, and it took them ages to trust each other again after realising they were on the same page/still loved each other. Now, as that relationship has mended enough for them to be bros again, it's Eun-ho and Sa-rang's friendship that's floundering on the rocks of everyday misunderstandings and accumulated hurt. And meanwhile you have Young-gun and Bora (I did not expect that they were actually friends! And it breaks my heart to see how Bora went from upbeat and fiery in the flashbacks, to broken, all in one year - but then a year of a nasty ex and being bullied will do that to a girl, I'm so glad she's in Team X now, she already seems so much happier). I have my fingers crossed for them all.

As usual, a lot of praiseworthy moment in this episode. I'm quite late to the recap so I believe other beanies have mentioned everything I intended to say.
However, I'm still thinking about why the show depicted the Rich Kids as somewhat suspicious in earlier episodes. What secret do they hide and what are they feared for by stating "Daehwi knows too much about us".
I used to think there is something going on underlayer alongside Student X mystery. But ever since it is revealed that Suspicious Students in Chat Group are the rich kids, they seem to become just a normal arrogant rich kids to me.
Here, I wonder it is no longer important to substance. Or did I miss something?

Oh. man !! I cant handle their adorableness ...they are so cute and funny at the same time. I love that after they confessed , they still have fun teasing each other and being sarcastic.
I am a bit disappointed with Sarang, she had her Kyung Woo and she should make some effort getting to know her new friends Dae and Bora rather than getting depressed and jealous. When my close friends got girlfriend i was happy for them and became friends with her, didnt ever got depressed or jealous. :S anywho...
I am really interested about Young Gun and Bora's friendship. Young Gun was very mean towards , pushing all the blame to her and not being friends with her at the time of her need.
And BORA better not be sick.

What Sarang is experiencing goes deeper than just "my best friend got a boyfriend so I'm depressed and jealous". Think about this: Eunho used to hang out with her every break and after school—provided Sarang isn't going to her academy and Eunho isn't working part-time—remember we saw them eating tteokbokki together early on, and they were together at the study room late until someone yelled they were running after X. And of course they not only spent time together but also shared their problems (Eunho told Sarang about the note someone left in her locker after the drone incident).
But once Taewoon revealed himself as X, and Eunho came round her initial frustration at that, Eunho began spending an inproportionate amount of time at his hideout and started hanging out with him at every chance. So Sarang ended up spending her breaks alone, and going home alone after school (recall the scene Kyungwoo asks her where Eunho is).
Sarang never suspected Taewoon and Eunho would date, so before she found out that, it was about Eunho neglecting her. We also see this when Sarang notices Eunho going to Bora. She doesn't know what went down with Bora and Heechan and Eunho helping Bora, so from her perspective, it just looks like her bestie is making new friends and choosing them over her.
There was also actually no reason for Eunho not to tell Sarang about her feelings for Taewoon even before she finally confessed to him, unlike how she had to keep X a secret. But also, she told Sarang she had to keep Taewoon's identity as X a secret, then Sarang goes in to find that Daehwi and Bora already know and are familiar with the place. So to Sarang, they are already a clique and she's just there by chance because she happened to see the interaction between Taewoon and Eunho and have Eunho end up spilling everything to her.
Ok so this turned out to be an essay, but Sarang has been easily misunderstood by viewers and I just wish more people could see what she's going through. She's not petty at all, she's very kind and understanding. Her hurt is something that has accumulated over time and due to multiple incidents.

I could have not said it better. Good job on dissecting Sarang! ??
To be fair with Eunho, she's not really great with her true feelings(romantically of course). I know people like this who can easily flirt to people they like but choke up on real deal. There is a part where she tried telling Sarang but got sideways, but she's still confused with her feelings then. It's actually a miracle when she stood on those stairs and face on her feelings. What Taewon said to her earlier really wakes her up and given her courage.

Can someone answer my question on the Korean education system. Thank you in advance. As I have seen from this drama and few other Korean High school based dramas, they always seemed centered around private high schools. Why is that so? Is there a broadcasting regulation that tells dramas cannot be shown to be based on students attending public high schools? Or the stories of students at public high schools? But I may be wrong, was School 2013 based in the public high school?
Also, a major question is if these students are attending private high school how are students from lower income families able to attend them? The students do not appear to attend on scholarship or any skilled factors as they are shown to be students with not so good grades. The private high school fees in Korea are they not that high? Cause in most countries it is usually a higher education fees attached when you attend a private school. I find it funny, these lower income students are teased by their richer friends only for being someone not as rich as them.

I've been wondering the same thing! I think School 2013 was based in a public (state?) school, because I remember the boys talking about how they came to school only because they got free meals.
I am also really confused about the fees at this school. It doesn't even have a good academic reputation. Why are all these rich kids here? And how can a cleaner who doesn't earn much afford to send her daughter to what seems like an expensive school? It doesn't seem like Sa Rang is on a scholarship or anything.
All in all, I think your questions touch on one of the problems I have with the writing in this drama. Really cartoonish and not realistic when it comes to how schools are run.
