Forest of Secrets: Episode 10

This woman might be my favorite heroine of all time. Everyone in the special investigation team is working hard to gather evidence and stay one step ahead of their powerful adversaries, but ultimately, the hour belongs to Yeo-jin. As always, she’s strong and principled in the face of every challenge, but this time, even her moral equilibrium is shaken by the unpleasant duties she must carry out in the name of justice.

EPISODE 10 RECAP

The news quickly spreads that Ga-young has miraculously awoken. Shi-mok and Yeo-jin rush to the hospital to find that Ga-young is disoriented and unable to communicate much. Team leader Choi calls Ga-young’s name loudly, but Yeo-jin stops him and gently tells the girl that they’re the police, and that everything will be okay now.

Ga-young calls for her mother with difficulty, and her mom runs into the room, sobbing over her daughter in relief.

Team Leader Choi receives a call from Chief Kim of the Yongsan Police Station. Yeo-jin and Shi-mok share a look as Choi tells Chief Kim that Ga-young can’t speak yet before he hangs up and tells Soon-chang that Soo-chan is coming to relieve them.

Yeo-jin pulls Shi-mok into the hallway and says that they need to move Ga-young to a safe place now that she’s awake. He agrees, but Eun-soo calls him to say that Kim Tae-gyun, the man who delivered the bribe money to her father three years ago, is on the run—and she’s hitched a ride in the back of his truck to make sure she won’t lose him. Section Chief Yoon calls Shi-mok as well to let him know that he’s following Eun-soo in his car.

Yeo-jin tells Shi-mok to go ahead, and that she’ll take care of moving Ga-young. Shi-mok apologizes and leaves in a hurry.

Section Chief Yoon honks at Kim Tae-gyun until the man turns around and pulls over, after noticing Eun-soo hanging on in the bed of his truck. He gets out to confront her, but Section Chief Yoon quickly apprehends him with a flying kick and a tackle. Damn, Section Chief Yoon!

Team Leader Choi asks Yeo-jin if CEO Park’s bribes included girls, assuming that CEO Park was a pimp. Yeo-jin says it’s possible, and Choi says that the men at the Seoul Western Prosecutor’s Office must know Ga-young. “It’s our job to find out who knows what,” replies Yeo-jin. “Other organizations might be involved too.”

She asks about Kyung-wan’s case, and Team Leader Choi says irritatedly that it will take forever to resolve if the human rights commission gets involved. Yeo-jin gives him a disappointed look.

She goes inside Ga-young’s room and, under the cover of embracing the girl’s mother, whispers into her ear that they need to move her. Yeo-jin warns her not to tell anyone, looking significantly at the window where the team leader is visible. Ga-young’s mom follows her gaze, and nods.

Dong-jae informs Chairman Lee that he saw former minister Young Il-jae’s wife when he was taken in for questioning by the special investigation team. At this, Chairman Lee dismisses his assistant, Secretary Woo, and Dong-jae says that Shi-mok offered to go easy on him if he gave him information on the Young Il-jae case. Dong-jae claims that he was so conflicted about what to do that he fell down the stairs.

Dong-jae begs and flatters, asking the chairman to save him from getting arrested. Chairman Lee says that he’s a businessman first and foremost, and asks what Dong-jae is selling. Dong-jae eagerly offers to find out what the special investigation digs up, but Chairman Lee asks why that should matter to him. Realizing that he’s made a mistake, Dong-jae bows deeply and apologizes profusely, making a huge (and seemingly purposeful) scene in the process.

Dong-jae exits the room still bowing and apologizing, but when he walks away, he smiles smugly and says to himself that one hurdle has been cleared. In his office, Chairman Lee tells Secretary Woo to tell his son-in-law (who is on his way to Tokyo with Yeon-jae to visit their daughter) to come back immediately.

Secretary Woo informs him that he can’t find deliveryman Kim Tae-gyun, the only loose end in the Young Il-jae business, and that Ga-young is awake. Chairman Lee tells him to take care of it.

Team Leader Choi is paged to another floor, and as soon as he leaves, a doctor and a team of nurses arrive with Yeo-jin, efficiently transferring Ga-young onto a gurney. Soon-chang asks what’s happening, and the nurse who was on duty the night Ga-young was nearly smothered comes in at the sound of all the commotion.

Yeo-jin tells her to keep this patient transfer strictly confidential—Ga-young’s life depends on it. Soon-chang asks if Team Leader Choi knows about it this, and and in response, Yeo-jin asks if Soon-chang trusts her.

When Team Leader Choi passes, the nurse hides Ga-young’s transfer paperwork behind her back. Meanwhile, Yeo-jin and her team rush Ga-young outside, covered in a blanket, to where Clerk Choi is waiting with a car.

They’ve gotten Ga-young and her mother into the backseat when Soo-chan arrives, and Yeo-jin and Clerk Shin duck down out of view just as the nurse comes outside, calling, “Detective!” Soo-chan turns to look at the nurse, but Soon-chang soon appears and leads him away just in time.

Once they’re gone, the nurse tells Yeo-jin that Ga-young had what she thought were very bad convulsions one day, but she’s having doubts now that she knows that Ga-young’s life is in danger (seriously, how did she not know this before?).

Yeo-jin sends the others ahead and goes to the hospital security room to ask for the CCTV footage from that day, only to be told that they just gave it to Soo-chan. Worse, Soo-chan rushed them, so they didn’t have time to make a copy and gave him the original hard drive.

Meanwhile, Eun-soo questions Kim Tae-gyun, reminding him that he was the one who told her to seek out CEO Park, but he denies everything. Shi-mok arrives and gives Eun-soo an irritated look, while Section Chief Yoon tells him that Eun-soo’s been following Kim Tae-gyun since yesterday.

Shi-mok reminds Kim Tae-gyun that they met three years ago, and when the young man claims that he paid for his crimes already, Shi-mok says that was for siphoning off U.S. dollars—there’s still time left in the statute of limitations for perjury.

Kim Tae-gyun tells them to lock him up, then—it’s better than being stabbed to death. Eun-soo jumps on this as an admission that he lied and framed her father, but Shi-mok gives her a look, and she subsides.

Shi-mok tells Kim Tae-gyun that he’ll die if he does stay quiet, because the murderer wants CEO Park’s crimes to be exposed, and those who have sinned to be punished. Eun-soo pleads with Kim Tae-gyun to admit to his lies, but Shi-mok says that they can just let him go and see if he ends up like Ga-young.

At that implicit warning, Kim Tae-gyun ends up testifying that Young Il-jae returned the 800 million won to him, which Section Chief Yoon records on his phone. Shi-mok tells Section Chief Yoon to take Kim Tae-gyun to the central prosecutor’s office and charge him with perjury, for his own protection. Section Chief Yoon tries to tell Eun-soo to come along, but she only has eyes for Shi-mok and thanks him profusely.

But Shi-mok is not happy, and he asks her if she’s lost her mind. She says that she had to do something when Shi-mok was working so hard, but he counters that he wasn’t doing it for her. But Eun-soo just thanks him again.

Shi-mok loses his temper and uncharacteristically yells, “It’s not like that!” He frowns at her and says that she’s not acting normal. Eun-soo agrees, and says that it’s impossible for her to act normal—her family has been desperately waiting for this day after being framed for three years for a crime they didn’t commit. And Shi-mok is the one who fixed it, she adds.

Shi-mok gets in the car, late for a meeting with Section Chief Kang, and Eun-soo joins him. Shi-mok gives her a fed up look, and she uncomfortably says that he can just drop her off on the way.

Yeo-jin shows the nurse a picture of Yeon-jae, whom she identifies as the woman she saw in the ICU the night Ga-young’s oxygen got disconnected. Yeo-jin informs Shi-mok of this new development, and says that she’ll try to get the hard drive from Soo-chan. Shi-mok notes that if Chief Kim and his cohorts have seen the CCTV footage, they know who moved Ga-young, but Yeo-jin says that she already knew that they would check the footage once Ga-young disappeared.

At Yongsan Police Station, a shocked Chief Kim watches the tape of Yeon-jae exiting Ga-young’s room. He deletes it, and then watches today’s footage of Ga-young being evacuated. Soon-chang soon finds himself cornered by Soo-chan, who asks him where Ga-young is, telling him that Yeo-jin is just Shi-mok’s minion.

Yeo-jin arrives and demands that Soo-chan give her the CCTV footage, but he wants to know Ga-young’s location in exchange. Yeo-jin refuses and angrily searches Soo-chan’s desk, finding nothing.

Shi-mok arrives back at team headquarters to find Section Chief Kang steaming at being made to wait for over two hours (and playing wastepaper basketball, ha). Section Chief Kang confesses that he had a few meals with CEO Park. Shi-mok says he knows, and refers to the case file Section Chief Kang himself wrote, saying it’s missing one important detail: Young Il-jae’s home was on the first floor.

Agreeing, Section Chief Kang recounts the events of that day, from the time the money was delivered to when Kim Tae-gyun came to pick it up at the family’s request, but Kim Tae-gyun was seen leaving the building empty-handed. There’s a CCTV at the building’s entrance but not in the hallway where the apartment is located, and Section Chief Kang speculates that Kim Tae-gyun tossed the box of money over the railing to a waiting accomplice in order to avoid the cameras.

Shi-mok confirms that Kim Tae-gyun’s confession matches this story, and Section Chief Kang, relieved, says that he knew Young Il-jae wasn’t that kind of person. Shi-mok frowns and asks what gave him that certainty, and his superior says that such a high-profile case was cause for a special investigation team.

Yet no such team was formed, the case was closed in two days, and everyone who worked on it was scattered to remote areas—including Shi-mok, who was only there for the initial search of the Young home.

Shi-mok asks if Section Chief Kang knows who ordered the case closed and why they did it, but the other man asks why he’s trying to dig this up. Shi-mok says that it was around that time that CEO Park started to frequent the prosecutor’s office, with then-Deputy Chief Lee’s tacit approval. Section Chief Kang says, “Three years ago, I was still young. If I get pushed out again, I won’t be able to recover.”

Shi-mok stares at him and remarks that if he’s afraid of retaliation, he must know something. Section Chief Kang indicates that the meeting is over, but Shi-mok guesses that he’d continued the investigation even after his team was disbanded. At that, Section Chief Kang just tells Shi-mok to give him some time to sort things out.

As he leaves, Section Chief Kang reflects that their current situation is odd—after he and Shi-mok were transferred away from the eastern office, he never thought they’d work together again.

Yeo-jin and Gun pore over the records of Ga-young’s stays at the Crown Royal Hotel where she would meet her clients, noticing that every credit card used for parking was different, even though the reservation was always under her alias, Kwon Min-ah.

Yeo-jin remembers Ga-young’s driver saying that he saw her using the lobby phone once last summer, and notices that at one point, Ga-young’s preferred room number changed from 510 to 610.

She asks the desk clerk if they had to suddenly move their guests from the fifth floor the previous summer, and he remembers that they had a problem with their AC and had to shift their guests. Yeo-jin asks the clerk for the call records for the lobby phone that day.

Next, we find Yeo-jin sitting at Ga-young’s bedside, even though the girl is covered from head to toe with a blanket. Yeo-jin says that she’s a police officer, and while some people would feel safe and comforted by that, she feels the need to apologize to Ga-young.

A knock sounds, and Yeo-jin signals Shi-mok to be silent with a finger to her lips as he enters. She says to Ga-young, “The man who used to call you on your days off… I don’t know what you were thinking when you went to meet him. But whether you wanted to do it or not, I’m sorry.” Ga-young remains silent.

Yeo-jin asks if she saw her attacker, and if it was the man she met every Monday. And still, Ga-young doesn’t move or respond. Shi-mok asks if the culprit is a prosecutor, or if she heard or remembers anything; he asks if the man she used to meet gave her money, and who he is.

We see Chief Kim smashing the hard drive with a hammer, extracting the chip, and flushing it down the toilet, as Yeo-jin says: “It’s the chief. My chief. The police did something they should never do.”

They go out into the hall, and Shi-mok asks Yeo-jin to find out from Chief Kim’s driver where he went every Monday last year. Yeo-jin calls Gun, who scoffs in disbelief but does as she requests; the driver tells him that Chief Kim used to go play indoor golf every week.

That alias seems to get Chief Kim off the hook, at least until Gun makes the realization that the indoor golf lounge where Chief Kim went every Monday is directly across the street from the hotel where Ga-young would entertain her guests.

The team holds a press briefing on the progress of the investigation. Shi-mok announces first that they’ve found the bribery charges against Young Il-jae inadmissible; second, that the man whom the second victim met through CEO Park was Yongsan Police Chief Kim Woo-kyun; and third, that they’re waiting on arrest warrants for multiple prosecutors at the Seoul Western Prosecutor’s Office. Shock ripples through the crowd of reporters.

Dong-jae catches Shi-mok’s eye in the crowd and claps silently, eventually following Shi-mok back to his office to offer to pay for his crimes by digging up information on Chief Prosecutor Lee.

Shi-mok dryly asks if he’ll do that while figuring out which side to join, and Dong-jae says that he’ll do anything to survive—Shi-mok just has to tell him what he needs.

Young Il-jae takes out a USB from his dresser, but hides it again when Eun-soo enters his room to ask if he’ll do an interview. The request came from Sungmoon Ilbo, the paper that broke the news, but he says it’s all politics and wants no part of it. She helps him to bed, but looks back at the dresser before she leaves.

Arriving home, Yeon-jae’s upset that they didn’t even get to see their daughter, and she tells her father that he shouldn’t have called them back. Chairman Lee snaps that her husband shouldn’t have caused this situation then, and Chief Prosecutor Lee gently suggests that she go and rest.

Once they’re alone, Chief Prosecutor Lee apologizes, saying that he didn’t know that Shi-mok would dig up the Young Il-jae case, but assures the chairman that as a mere prosecutor, Shi-mok won’t be able to do anything unless Young Il-jae holds a hidden card. Chairman Lee dismisses that possibility and tells his son-in-law to take advantage of the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity he’s provided for him. In return, younger man promises to end the special investigation.

Yeon-jae, who had been eavesdropping, goes into her bedroom to speak with someone who informs her that Ga-young awoke, and is now hidden away somewhere. Upset at this revelation, Yeon-jae tells the person to “do the other job well.”

Reporters mob Chief Kim when he arrives at the Seoul Central Prosecutor’s Office the next day in response to our team’s summons. The team watches on TV as he declares to the press that he’s innocent, and that the prosecutors have manipulated evidence to frame him. The others ask Yeo-jin if she’ll be okay questioning her boss, but she says matter-of-factly that it’s just work.

Jung-bon asks Yeo-jin if any police officers witnessed Kyung-wan getting beaten, since the pictures aren’t enough to prove torture, but Clerk Kim chides that to ask her such a favor will make her an outcast once she goes back to the police station.

Yeo-jin gathers herself before she goes in to interrogate Chief Kim. He glares at her, and once she begins to ask questions, he says that he has never met Ga-young, and gets up to leave. Yeo-jin tells him to sit down, asking if he was threatened by CEO Park. Chief Kim asks angrily why she keeps talking about a dead man, and she replies, “Because he’s dead. Please sit down.”

Chief Kim asks if she’s trying to dump the murder on him because they can’t link him to Ga-young, but she just calmly recites his alibis for both days, which makes him livid. He says he’s dead to his family because of what they’ve done, and declares again that he doesn’t know Ga-young and never touched her.

Yeo-jin places photos before him, captured from the hotel security footage of him and Ga-young. He stares at them in horror. Yeo-jin says, “If you continue to deny it, we’ll have no choice but to publicize these photos. Please admit it and apologize. That’s the last thing I can do for…”

She stops and stands up, her eyes moistening. She moves to look him in the eye as she says, “It’s the last thing you can do for the democratic and civilian police, and for your colleagues at Yongsan Police Station. Please do it for us, sir.” She bows.

Chief Kim asks to go to the bathroom as he is escorted out. When Gun takes him, Chief Kim pushes him against a stall door and tells him he needs a favor—he wants a copy of the damning security footage. Oh, no.

Back in the team’s office, Gun acts as though he thinks the photos are fake, so Yeo-jin opens her laptop to show him the video, and Gun watches carefully as she enters her password, mouthing the letters. He tells her he doesn’t need to see the actual footage, and when she leaves, Gun is left alone with her laptop. Ack!

Shi-mok and Dong-jae meet Section Chief Kang, who tells Dong-jae to spill what he knows. Dong-jae says that that Chairman Lee ordered CEO Park to give the money to Young Il-jae. CEO Park wanted to do business with Hanjo Group, so he brought women to have drinks with Chief Prosecutor Lee. Chairman Lee got in touch through Secretary Woo in order to get CEO Park involved, and to strike at his son-in-law’s Achilles heel. That weakness, known to both men, forced Chief Prosecutor Lee to go along with Chairman Lee’s strike against Young Il-jae.

Section Chief Kang comments that Young Il-jae was like a father to Chief Prosecutor Lee. But, Shi-mok wonders: If CEO Park really provided Lee with women as Dong-jae says, why would Chairman Lee use his son-in-law to get rid of Young Il-jae? Section Chief Kang says he doesn’t know, and recalls how CEO Park was investigated for the insider trading he did with Hanjo Distribution stocks—and that Hanjo protected him from conviction at that time.

He tells them that Chairman Lee’s children own a large percentage of stocks in that company as well. Yeon-jae has 1.5 billion won’s worth, and her half-brother has 3.5 billion won, while CEO Park had invested 1.4 billion won. Shi-mok wonders what the connection is with Young Il-jae’s bribery case—perhaps he knew something he shouldn’t. But Section Chief Kang says the old man never told him anything.

Prompted by a phone call, they turn on the TV to see that former Chief Prosecutor Lee has just been appointed chief secretary to the President of Korea. Section Chief Kang says that the criminal division is going to congratulate their former boss, and tells them to come along.

Dong-jae suddenly claims to have other plans and disappears, leaving Section Chief Kang to ask if Shi-mok trusts Dong-jae. Shi-mok says he has no choice, since there’s no one else he can send to investigate Hanjo. Shi-mok asks him to hold off on firing Dong-jae until he’s arrested.

Shi-mok then wonders if Chairman Lee might have found out about CEO Park when he invested that large amount of money in Hanjo Distribution, and Section Chief Kang promises to look into it.

As they walk out, Section Chief Kang tells Shi-mok to treat Section Chief Yoon well because he’s a good guy, and, literal as ever, Shi-mok asks what he should do to “treat him well.” His superior bursts out laughing and says that question only sounds sincere coming from Shi-mok. He tells him that attitude is all he needs, and says mildly, “Be good to me too, you punk.” Shi-mok assents.

Chief Secretary Lee Chang-joon admires his new office, ignoring a call from Chief Kim and blocking his number in the process. Gifts arrive, including one from Chief Kim: a picture captured from the security footage of Ga-young exiting Chief Secretary Lee’s room. A note on the back threatens to reveal who was staying in that room at the time.

At a knock on the door, Chief Secretary Lee stuffs the photo in his pocket and welcomes his hoobaes. Shi-mok notices the opened box that the picture came in, and seeing this, Chief Secretary Lee moves in front of it. The two men stare at each other.

Meanwhile, Yeo-jin arrives at the Lee home to question Yeon-jae.

COMMENTS

Yeo-jin has consistently been the bright spot in the midst of all these sober, tense, plotting characters—the one character who always looks for the good in people, who waits and observes and gives people chances to live up to their potential. She’s not naive in the least, nor does she allow anyone to take advantage of her, but she wants to believe in people, and she gives them a chance to be better, even when she suspects that they’re not going to take it. I could feel her disappointment and disgust with her team leader at his comment about Kyung-wan’s case, although as usual, she was careful to let very little of that emotion show.

So that made it even more heartbreaking to see her face the moral corruption of Chief Kim—to realize that not only was he involved in covering up the crimes of his powerful friends, he himself participated in the long-standing abuse of poor Ga-young (we can’t forget that whether she was willing or not, Ga-young was underage). As Yeo-jin apologized to the silent Ga-young, steeled herself for her interrogation of Chief Kim, and then finally confronted him with the evidence while refusing to be intimidated, I was riveted, and my heart broke for her.

Clearly, the most painful thing about this for Yeo-jin was the betrayal of the ethical code that the police have sworn to uphold—of the people the police have sworn to protect—and I wanted to cheer when she took Chief Kim to task for trying to avoid taking responsibility for that betrayal. I was proud of her for standing on her own, and yet I was also reminded that in many ways, Yeo-jin is just as lonely as Shi-mok.

In fact, she was working mostly on her own in this episode, whereas Shi-mok seems to be finding allies left and right now that he’s in a position to make some real progress, and because he’s also earned the trust of people like Section Chief Yoon and Section Chief Kang. I did notice Shi-mok’s concerned looks at Yeo-jin and his regret that he couldn’t help her out, so I hope we get to see these two working together again next week.

On a different note, I keep getting the sense that Eun-soo imagines herself as the heroine of an epic revenge melodrama. She continues to force herself into situations in order to further her own goals—there’s nothing natural about anything she does, and her encounters with Shi-mok feel especially forced. I can’t help but wonder if this show is subtly mocking the typical setup of a revenge melo by giving us a hero so uncomfortable in Eun-soo’s presence, one who’s so irritated and suspicious when she jumps to conclusions about him caring about her or doing things (that she feels are) for her. It would be kind of brilliant if that were the case, not to mention hilarious. And it would certainly fit with this writer’s ironic sense of humor.

Haha. I was surprised I liked his outburst. He seemed to be too contained for his own good. A little outburst here and there would warn ES not to be too brash and reckless in her actions and thoughts. She deserves it.

I felt "You're not acting normal!" described his agitation more than her. Self-justified and impetuous is business as usual for Eun Soo.

I just want to know, was Yoon following the guy and ES gets in the way or was Yoon keeping tabs on ES's shenanigans as per SM's instructions? The subs didnt make it clear so was wondering who is Yoon after , ES or the guy in the truck?

Apart, I think I like Yoon's character - quiet and dignified. He is good and hence looks upto SM and also can get along with LCJ because LCL god knows who he is but he recognizes and likes guys with moral rectitude and hence interacts with Yoon and SM well.

Yoon's been following the guy. He even hurt his hand in the previous episode trying to catch the guy. I like Yoon too. I was happy he came clean to Shi-Mok about digging into his background.

That's a good point. It didn't occur to me that Yoon was following ES--I assumed he'd been following the guy. But it would have been smart to follow ES since does have a habit of getting into or stirring up trouble. And she's on their network diagram of suspicious characters.

Oh really? Is she in that diagram in their working room as well? Wow that's new to me.

1

@mmmmm yeah, just checked, she's at center bottom next to her father. I had trouble reading her name but I'm pretty sure it's her. Shi Mok was surveying the board after that tension-filled dinner and just before ES walked in and asked why she's not on the task force (so he could have answered, "Because you're still a suspect.") There's something like 14 people on that board. I wish I had it on a t-shirt.

3

As much as I like the idea of having a t-shirt with a diagram of suspects on it (haha), I'd much more prefer one with a huge face of Shi Mok *shy* *happy dance*

Even his shout is sweet. *oh my*

Omg, first thanks for the recap. Second I believe you are dead on about Eun Soo and her melodrama. I believe she wants Shi Mok to be her lead, thankfully he wants none of her shenanigans, he has bigger fish to fry. Also Yeo- Jin is a gem of a wonderfully nuanced well written character.

ES seems to be hitting, no, forcing herself on SM every chance she can get, and I cringe every time she does this. Why? Can't she tell the guy is so uncomfortable being with her? His body language screams so.

A strong Female character requires a Well Written Character and here our Scriptwriter knows what pain audience suffers in the presence of annoying heroines. This is how we got our Yeo-Jin and this is why we have Eun-Soo. Writer doesn't want the audience to forget the most common female types. That way Eun-Soo is fulfilling all of her character responsibilities

It's too bad we still treat Eun-soo like an annoying bitchy 2nd lead.
Yeo-jin is clearly the more righteous heroine of the show and it's not going to change.
Bae Doona said in an interview that she didn't know who the culprit was until episode 14. So, she is definitely not the culprit.
I find Eun-soo's character the more interesting right now because I can't figure out what she is going to do next.
I'm going to guess that maybe her father has a list of all the officials that CEO Park was bribing but he kept his end of the bargain to protect his wife and Eun-soo and maybe a little loyalty to his former colleagues.
Now that his name is cleared (thanks to Eun-soo) and the case is being watch by the whole nation, I hope that he doesn't feel the need to remain quiet unless there is more to it than just protecting the women in his life.

Writer deserves some blame for creating these feelings in the heart of audience. I felt Eun-soo lost a bit of touch of stranger in this episode. Through eun-soo's character writer is providing us multiple alternatives. Eun-soo can be seen as asset as well as a liability too. Eun-soo has opurtunity to provide credible evidence as well to ruin the whole present plan of shi-mok.

ES seems to be romanticizing everything SM does for her, even though it is done out of irritability and discomfort. Or is she not? SM seems to be doing what a mentor would do for a mentee, one which is not born out of any special romantic feelings, but that of a responsibility, and nothing more.

I miss the working relationship between YJ and SM this episode. It's sad to see YJ working alone, being sad on her own as she confronts her chief being evasive with her, lying to her and not owning up to his faults until confronted with the evidence. She must have felt so disappointed with the peers she worked with, and although she is not naive enough to think everyone is upright and moral, she must have thought the better of her peers and colleagues.

Where did you see that she romanticizes everything SM does for her? As far as I know she only thanked him because her father's name was finally cleared. And it is totally understandable for me, even though it wasn't his goal, it doesn't change the fact that it's thanks to him that it happened and she was waiting for this day for the past three years.

I sometimes get the impression that people read too much the characters' actions or that they feel the need to criticize Eun Soo when they like Yeo Jin and vice versa. Eun Soo is brash, reckless, immature, kind of impulsive and wants badly to prove her mentor that she is capable, it's obvious but so far she doesn't seem to be let's say an evil selfish bitch whose only goal is to annoy her sunbae. (and I am not specifically talking about you here but on the general feeling online)

No offense though, it's just my POV.

In isolation, her thanking him is perfectly understandable, but her behavior through all the episodes do seem to indicate she's interested in him or she just wants to push his buttons, or she's actively trying to manipulate him, or she could even be an evil mastermind (she is on the masterfully hidden back side of the whiteboard). I think it's a sign of great writing and the writers' intentions that people have different interpretations and they're managing to keep us guessing!

An honest question.

What tools does Hye-sun have to influence Shi-mok? (given she has a horse in the race)

She is at a major disadvantage here:
-- lower in the hierarchy - (in a hyper-political environment)
-- young
-- carrying her family's stigma
-- and like in many male dominated workplaces-female
-- about to be pushed out to the regions

Hye-sun is obviously aware of Shi-mok's lack of emotion (as shown previously)....but as with all of us, our embedded social programing is hard to kick...if Hye-sun is using any flirtation in her interactions, is it:
A: Attempting to apply the only tools she has (even if unsuccessful);
B: To see if Shi-mok's lack of emotional experience may be a potential weakness. Or;
C: A misplaced reading of Shi-mok's different reaction to her vs how others treat her?

At present, I cant see it as option "C". Hye-sun can't wait around...she sees a window of opportunity to restore her family's reputation--and by extension her future. Hye-sun is not a wall flower (placing herself in mortal danger for this cause) Hence the story so far indicates that she would be out to use all tools available to her. She can not sit back as it is too big a risk that her father's case may be excluded from the current investigation.

...Assuming she is not the criminal mastermind...

Agreed. She is constantly being pitted against Yeo Jin as a romantic rival, why? Plot wise, she has been consistent. Everytime Shi Mok blocked her way, she found a different route. When he blocked her active participation in the investigation and instead called her mother for fact checking, I knew she won't stand still. It has been established pretty concretely that her desperation has reached new heights as key players move about the chess board. And her reaction to the scolding too which was justified, she was barely listening and just plain elated at having finally proved her father's Innocence. She as always ignored Shi Mok's anger, concern/rage, whatever it was. See, how relieved she was when she was smiling with her father. I don't like it when characters get the same treatment like every other second lead bitchy ones when they haven't earned it. We haven't seen last of Young Il Jae or his story. That pen drive connects the whole story and it'll probably be Eun Soo's making or breaking based on the content.

hear hear! With how layered all the other characters are, I'm having trouble nailing down who ES is - nor do I want to nail down who she is or her motives this early. Sure she can be annoying, but I sort of admire her initiative. She's not going to wait for someone to fix things for her.

I freaking love both girls even with Eun-soo's flaws and all. She is not your typical dramaland bitchy 2nd lead.
I don't blame her one bit for going after Ex Chief Lee and I hope she'd succeed.
I just hope that she didn't try to frame him because it'll come back and bite her in the butt.

<She is constantly being pitted against Yeo Jin as a romantic rival, why?

She goes to a single guy's house (still a no-no in Korea).
She borrows his clothes (she could have bought some in a shop before going home, indeed even before going to see him but she came in damsel-in-distress mode).
She doesn't just return those clothes, but gives him a new sweater as a present (too much, too intimate, not appropriate).
She has directly said to him, in a teasing / provocative manner, when in his house alone with him, 'Do I tempt you?'
He's clearly uncomfortable with her and she insists getting into his space, whether his house, his car or late at night in an empty office.
Her 'thank you' now, as technocat says, in isolation would be perfectly understandable but now isn't innocent in the light of her previous actions.

She may only be a determined prosecutor trying to clear her family's name, but she is crossing lines and behaving unprofessionally, in ways that could be seen as flirting/trying to seduce, for whatever reason (i.e. actual crush on Shi-Mok or manipulation for other reasons).

My reply was to the original post. If Eun Soo romanticizes each and every move then by her own admission she wouldn't be able to be around Shi Mok as much as she is. Remember, their first conversation, Sunbae, things like that don't affect you so why should I be worried about being embarrassed by those. That was the essence of their conversation and I am not even sure if that came from a genuine place or just one of her endless manipulation tactics. The point I am trying to make is that Eun Soo is less guided by romantic feelings and more by her own agenda. She uses whatever means necessary in the process and tries to yield results. I don't think Shi Mok would clear her father's name right away had she not intervened. He would but it wasn't his priority. That whole scene was filled with intense desperation. She blurted out all her past actions in that confession scene including meeting CEO Park right in front of Shi Mok. I truly believe it when she said that she is not in her right mind. She wasn't.

Yeah. ES really gets it all the time. She fighting a lone battle and like it or not, SM comes into the picture every time. He posits himself there through instigating her or later castigating her. Naturally she assumes he is there by her side. She simply doesnt know what he is up to because she doesnt have access to that info and neither does she follow him to find out.
Now that her father's name is cleared I hope she gets to know the manipulative SM by working on the case from the outside.

Bae Doo-na's acting was so good in that interrogation scene with the police chief. How many of us could even imagine doing that to the big boss? Her inner strength is admirable.

I also love that despite Section Chief Kang's earlier hazing of Shi-mok, he turned out to be okay as far as a prosecutor goes; it's always good when Shi-mok gained an unofficial ally. The writing peels layer upon layer of the characters, so we as audience are forced to never trust or distrust anyone so soon.

That scene made me realize how lonely her quest in seeking justice was. While SM is gaining allies left and right, she seems to be alone. Even Gun, whom I thought was initially on her side, seemed a bit dubious in his loyalty.

Shi-mok doesn't have the allies as few ppl try to portray. No one is here for him. Everyone is here for their own objectives or yo fulfill their responsibilities as public officials . Yeo-Jin joined him for investigation and shi-mok was in suspect list. Shi-mok got his subordinates with him. Yoon and mr. Kang are here for the investigation. Similarly yeo-jin has young boy and gun. Both helped her out few times earlier. Shi-mok was more of an outcast than yeo-jin and he is the one managing things alone. I think episode 10 acts would help yeo-jin understsnd how shi-mok worked more. Good communication and trust is a must if they want to achieve their goals. Their goals are almost same. Though surely shi-mok is more selfish in his march to attain those said goals. These are the necessary steps that yeo-jin needed to take and she held her profession and those ideals high.

I love Yeo-jin, she's the best. Yeo-jin forever!!! I still haven't forgotten that she's the only one who saw Shi-mok using that knife though, was that ever explained? That moment when Shi-mok realized the position he'd put her in by having her interview her boss though... our robot prosecutor is slowly becoming human.

Eun Soo though, jeez. She bullies Shi-mok into giving her an inch, and she uses that inch to stage a land invasion to take 10,000 miles. I'm still not sure that she's a murderer, but I am 100% sure that she's entitled.

Somehow, ES feels flattered at every little attention SM gives her, like it's justification that SM sees her in some way, romantically or not. That's why she feels entitled to behave the way she does every time she is around him. She seems to think that SM would bail her out of every dangerous situation she is in, as with her call to her when that guy who sent her dad cash. Although she doesn't know it, he is also there during her confrontation with DJ.

5

Required fields are marked *

Was it that she expected ShiMok to bail her out (to be her knight in shining armor) or was it that she wanted to get her father's name cleared by catching KTG AND knew that ShiMok also wanted to catch KTG? I think it's the second option, personally.

My interpretation is that EunSoo is desperate and therefore dangerous. Like several others on here have said, EunSoo knows full well how extra she's being, but just doesn't care as long as she gets the desired result.

And so, maybe the reason so many are reacting negatively to her character is that while we can understand and empathize with her desire to see her father cleared of suspicion, we like our heroines to be above using underhanded tactics. Perhaps we also have trouble being on EunSoo's side in all this because her goal is so personal and all-consuming that we don't really get any glimpse of what else she believes in. For example: ShiMok is willing to choke the taxi driver to get GaYoung's address. But this is deemed 'all for the greater good' because ShiMok's goal is (probably?) to get rid of corruption. Versus: EunSoo interrogates and is choked by DongJae --> this is deemed over the top, obsessive, and indicative of EunSoo having some sort of mental issue.

To me, the fact that both ShiMok and EunSoo are willing to court violence to achieve their goals makes them two sides of the same coin. So to me, the fact we are able to both root for and pity ShiMok, means that we should be able to do the same for EunSoo. :)

Required fields are marked *

I agree that they are similar in their determination, but their goals seem different to me. I do pity her though. They made ES character goal clear. Revenge. Until that is removed, I can't see myself rooting for her. However, like you mentioned if we can get a glimpse of what she believes in, that might change. If ES father's name is cleared, maybe we will see who she is outside of the incessant revenge plotting. On the other hand, when/if the revenge motive is removed, I worry that her character will become less intriguing. I know I can't have my cake and eat it too. I don't know how to remove this huge motivation for ES but still have her be interesting.

Also, just in general I think maybe we root more for SM because the story is more from his perspective. We might just generally be a little more trusting of his character because we've seen him the most. We've watched and experienced his struggle to figure things out where as ES is more tertiary. We see glimpses of motive from what SM discovers or implies. It might just be the power of perspective.

HAHAHA someone finally said this! Thanks @laica

And WHOA, obviously the first thing I have to comment on is SM losing his temper! Regardless of the reason's why...bc I'm actually conflicted between thinking that it was either due to his irritation with Eun-soo acting like a psycho (again) or bc her acting like a psycho put her in danger, which made him worry (why this time though? he didn't reprimand her when she almost died)..... I can't help but feel that this was some sort of foreshadowing that he will begin to feel more emotions on a heightened level. Which is worrisome, bc I think he will need to keep being cool as a cucumber, what with all the corruption and enemies surrounding him.

And about Yeon-jae, with the revelation that she owns a large percentage of stock in Hanjo Group, obviously one of her main motivations is greed. I think there's more to her, and I can't wait to find out more.

Lastly, ofc Yeo-jin absolutely rocked in this episode. I'm dying to see her confrontation with Yeon-jae.

(I haven't completely processed everything that went down in this episode, so I'll probably lurk on this thread for a few days...you've been warned)

@laica I love your Beautiful analysis of Yeo Jin. I started watching this show partly because of your recaps and Bae Doona . She is my favourite character because she seems to be the most human out of all the character , inherently good. She is like a voice of a reason in that dark world of forest of secrets where everyone seems to have ulterior motives and have schemes. But as you pointed out , she is not at all naive and hold her own. She is now an one man army against their whole police department. And she might be turned into pariah due to this. I love Shi Mok and Yeo jin scenes but it was cool to see her doing her own thing. The interrogation scene was so badass and heartbreaking at the same time. Its sad to see that all the trust she had in police and her superior are falling apart. Bae Doona is doing a fantastic job potraying her character and Yeo Jin is slowly becoming my favourite female character. I always look forward to her scenes in the show.
Oh and the thanks for the recap , I really needed for this episode, it was a bit complicated for me with How Young il jae ,Park, Chairman and Prosector Lee is involved ?

Yeo-Jin's loneliness and isolation have been more apparent to me for the past several episodes. It started pretty much from episode 2 after she leaked the DNA test results of the blood in the alley. But what is cool about her is that she's willing to take on the system while still believing in it. I really love the way she is so balanced and grounded.
I really hope she has a happy ending (at least a not horrible one)

But if ShiMok had noticed the box on Chief Lee's desk (i hope it is not red herring that they show that scene to us), that means Gun must have told ShiMok about Police Chief's request and they have given to Police Chief to see who he will blackmail that with.

I also hope that Gun has disclosed the chief's request to the team and they are using it to follow the chain of corruption. In these types of cases, getting conspirators to turn on each other to save themselves is the best way to find out which players are involved.
It did seem that Gun likes Yeo jin in the early episodes, so I don't think he would betray her directly by accessing her computer to take the footage.

While I do think that Shi-mok's earlier outbursts was a calculated move to make people confess or say something specific (like in the jail with the wife, or his harsh tone while questioning grandma), his outburst with Eun-soo this eps seems genuine, whether out of annoyance or anger. He was also so tense and a tad uncomfortable after realizing that he truly yelled at her.

If all these bribery, sponsor, case cover ups, and false accusation are nothing compared to the initial reason why everything happened, I can't imagine what would be the worst of the worst that might be on the base of this iceberg. And I'm not even sure Shi-mok fully understand the extent of the problems and ugly secrets he is trying to unearth.

He really does seem to have turned a corner now, doesn't he? ShiMok even wants to be nice to people, other than YeoJin. I didn't think he'd get to that step so quickly. But maybe I underestimated him. I'm sure (with how smart his character is supposed to be) that ShiMok has realized that all these positive emotions he's having can help him in his quest.

However, after all those years of spent in the prosecutor's office, dealing with criminals and frustrating coworkers, I bet ShiMok has plenty of control over his anger. In fact, I think that anger is one emotion ShiMok has probably kept in touch with despite the surgery. In ep5, when GaYoung's case was assigned to DongJae and EunSoo rubbed his face in it, he clearly asked her if she was trying to piss him off. And the look on his face was clearly frustrated.

My take on it is that he was annoyed at having to come clean up Eun-Soo's mess. It worked out in the end but it could have gone horribly wrong. In addition, he was in the middle of something way more important to the investigation (moving Ga-young who is a possible eye witness to safety) and had to rush to the scene. Plus she was once again misunderstood his motivations. no wonder he got angry ?

KTG was running away and prosecutor Yoon was chasing after him, he was beeping for him to stop but he didn't comply. He only stopped the truck because he saw Eun Soo was behind.

From Shi Mok's point of view, I understand why he got angry. He was trying to catch the bigger fish (when he was interrogating KTG) but Eun Soo kept interrupting and was only concerned about clearing her father's name, thing that Shi Mok doesn't judge important.

I ship Yeo-jin and Shi-mok all the way... Their relationship is one to be envied for. Look how Shi-mok expression every time he just has had conversation with Yeo-jin, it looks so relaxed. Or how he turns to be such an awkward, funny, and the most adorkable emotionless prosecutor in K drama land, every time he is with her.
Though I don't want to trust Yeo-jin wholeheartedly like Shi-mok. Because I can feel this writer can turn the table suddenly and make her to be shady villain. Her background is not clear yet, it is dubious for me. The more Shi-mok trust her, the more I don' trust her. LOL (writer-nim what you do to me!). But.... every time I start to distrust her, she shows me how awesome woman, she is. Her reaction on the case with the police beat up the suspect to get a confession they want it, the way she shuts off Yeon-jae at that awkward diner, or the way she apologizes to Ga-young for all things that has been happened to her. Gahhh how I can not love her or how can I not trust her??
On the weird side, it is Eun-su, I can relate to her. I meant the way she is so attracted to Shi-mok. Do you know the thrills of finally finding someone how doesn't get intimidated by your intelligent, stubbornness? Someone who doesn't think you are just too-hard-too-your-self, your bravery is just an act? Someone who can challenge you and push you to be the best you can? I know the thrills and I miss it. What make us difference is that she acts on her feeling, but I don't because professionalism all the way. I do have the romanticizing thought, and even giggle on it, but hey my rationale always gets me on the way out. I still cannot trust Eun-su, but I can't help but feel for her.

I don't think yeo jin is a shady person, or the writer has any intention to make her one. Like we can see how she even took that halmony to her own place, and let her grandson stay with her there. Her attitude toward the commoners and how she treats everyone fairly, even the junior colleague from the police, proves her transparency while dealing with everyone. Shi Mok and Yeo Jin are the only two people in the drama who have no ulterior motive or nothing at stake, that's why she is the only people he shares all the secrets and his next steps with.

I agree about Yeo Jin, her emotions were raw and sincere. She has always been somebody who feels there's a certain amount of sanctity in the office she is a part of. She felt that her own chief violated that and the way she reacted to it was in accordance with the character that has been established. But I am scared for her. More people will possibly let her down within her own workforce as the story progresses and I can't imagine how much more hurt awaits her.
As for Shi Mok, I am not exactly angry at him but I kept feeling he is asking too much Yeo Jin. Going after his chief while keeping Dong Jae around, I felt there was unevenness in that decision. Yeo Jin is right now in the forefront of distrust and the bad side of her colleagues openly. Nobody on planet earth likes it when one of their own attacks their group. That is exactly what has happened and I feel sorry for her. I know she is brave and generate enough good-will but I wouldn't want to be in her shoes. Also, what is with his decision of using Dong Jae. I found his reasoning ridiculous. He is still underestimating Dong Jae after every single thing he has done. If I had to compare Dong Jae to an insect, it'd be a cockroach. And cockroaches have survived and outlived dinosaurs for a reason. Even if Shi Mok can predict to an extent Dong Jae's behavior and keep eyes on him, it is still extremely risky to be using him. He has his uses but I have feeling the price of that might turn out to be too high. I am surprised nobody talked about the revelation at the end and Lee Yoon Beom's scene. And what is with the newspaper, what exactly is Sungmoon and how is it tied to the central plot. I also found the humor thanks to Chief Kang and Dong Jae a welcome change and an excellent addition. Their back and forth jibes at each other was extremely fun to watch. So, Lee Chang Joon gave in once to his desires and that made him bound to Lee Yoon Beom. After that, Il Jae got false accused, was removed from the office and was threatened pretty badly to not use whatever evidence that he has against the Lee Household. Which raises the most important question, this servile bond that Lee Chang Joon shares with Lee Yoon Boem, how long will it last?? Because the way I see it, he was a reluctant participant in the events 3 years ago and betrayed a father-figure he still holds in high respect in the process. He also has a wife who gives me major vibes of Lady Mcbetch. With his new position in blue house, does that mean he will play along nicely or will he retaliate?? Lastly, about Eun Soo, I am surprised that Shi Mok lost his temper on her. She earned it by all means but why now? The girl almost got herself choked to death while he watched from afar and he looses his cool just because she followed a lead?? Is something missing in the narration? She deserved an even more harsh scolding like two episodes ago.
I think I finally figured out why he is so wary of her being involved in the investigation. He...

He trained her and the girl knows her sunbae or at least can predict his behavior correctly to an extent. It helps that she is smart even if she impulsive and emotionally driven. I knew she'll force her way in to the investigation the moment her mother was summoned. But how?? Turns out she kept an eye on the delivery guy just like Shi Mok. I believe she wouldn't have asked for Shi Mok's help she could force that confession out herself. She did say that he had met the delivery guy before with similar intention. She met with CEO Park in the same hope. About Shi Mok's scolding, I think we all know Eun Soo has a very thick skin around Shi Mok. I don't think she misunderstands his care for her but rather takes what is given to her by him on face value. You helped me reluctantly but did help me so I'll thank you. But I do believe she thanked him sincerely this time around on behalf of her entire family, it felt genuine. She has been patient for 3 years and finally when things are moving in the right direction, she was grasping at straws. Her brushing off Shi Mok's shouting and readily getting in the car is typical Eun Soo. What I did find slightly hinting at typical kdrama troupe of romance was what Shi Mok did. Not the shouting, that was odd but what he did after that. He pulled her slightly in by grabbing her hand and aksed her if she was in her right mind. Eun Soo, didn't read too much into it. She nonchalantly answered that she isn't and her answer for once felt honest. I still don't understand what Shi Mok has in mind in regards to Eun Soo. He still hasn't told Yeo Jin about him openly suspecting her or any information about her to Yeo Jin, why not?? I need answers for that.

I need those answers as well :) What does he feel of ES?

One thing that threw me off completely in these past 10 episodes is when SM says he will need SDJ's help is because he isn't married into a rich family and will need access to Lee's family. I was 'what?? what did you say? you mentioned marriage???' That was so so odd.

Yes, the 'not married into a rich family' comment caught my attention too. But for all that it seems odd because we don't think he would be the kind of person that would be married or thinking about marriage, it has to be remembered that despite his lack of emotion compared to others, he is not socially clueless (even if he often acts against social norms). He very well knows what the social norms and socially normal behaviours are, and this comment really only reveals that – he knows marriage is also used by people for 'access', power and manipulation.

And it's good he knows that – after all, the prosecutor general was already suggesting to marry him into Lee's family and Lee's wife wants to set him up too. He's not going to fall into those traps, precisely because he can make statements like that one.

Hes never been clueless about these things, be it attraction , sexual chemistry, marriage , dating..
Its just he never talks about it, he did it once with ES at his place (his personal space), he remains silent when YJ asks for his girlfriend / loves. He feigns ignorance at the Lee lady about dating.
Now all of a sudden he positions himself as not being married, saying this in the office to his colleagues. It really took me aback. This sudden change in character that he can dismiss these very topics that seemingly bring about his cold, walled expression otherwise.

Man, this series is seriously the death of me. How much am I replying as if I'm going to get millions for this.. Ah...Get over secret forest and I need a loooooog respite from good tv series.

1

Exactly, he has never been clueless about these things – the people around him sometimes seem to think that he's clueless about it though (whenever they dismiss his actions as 'He's just like that', not realising that although he is like that, he also chooses not to pretend to fit in more neatly).

I'm not sure he's positioning himself as not married (not the way another single person might), I think he sometimes reveals these things when it serves him. Though I don't know how it serves him in that conversation, perhaps it's merely to point out the corruption that can come from marriages. Or maybe he has other reasons for using Dong-jae that he doesn't want to reveal and it's just a cover shield comment.

But of course it could be that our prosecutor is changing, since he's been experiencing some feelings now, and he ends up saying some unexpected things now.

1

He probably meant that he has no powerful connection outside of the prosecutor's office.
Dong-jae is already in cahoot with Chairman Lee and his family so he has no choice but to trust him.

I didn't think of it as Shi-mok thinking about real marriage or anything of that sort. He is just using it as an example.

Money, power, root of all corruptions etc can be link to some of these chaebol families.

This drama is doing an incredible job of keeping the tension - letting the pauses, silences, and stares speak volumes - and also releasing that tension too.

The hospital scene where they moved Ga-young was pretty awesome - beautifully choreographed!

Where many cop/legal procedural dramas have cardboard caricatures and dumb as doorknob characters, it's an amazing array we have here in FOS.

Shi Mok and Yeo Jin are awesome as always, we also have interesting characters like Section Chief Kang and Chief Kim. The actors playing them have always been good but in this drama, they shine. I love the scene where Yeo Jin interrogate Chief Kim, it was superbly played by Bae Doo Na and Choi Byung Mo.

I like Eun Soo because she's an interesting character. I still can't decide if she is really crushing hard on Shi Mok or is it part of her pretense. It would be the perfect excuse for her outrageous behavior but a more benign one than something sinister.

In this drama, every character has its story. I've been so led to this expectation that when clerk Choi was absent, I immediately wondered if there's something more to it. By the way, I am smitten by Section Chief Yoon. He looks good and can do such a badass flying kick. Still, I caught myself wondering if there's anything more to the accident which took the life of his child.

See, this show makes your mind cogs turn at every slightest thing. I've not backtrack a drama so many times like this one just to make sure I catch the name or thing.

Enjoying every bit of this show. The politics is intriguing, shaking the unbreakable institutions of the police, prosecution and the military as seen in the previous eps.

Is it possible that LCJ is on a covert mission of his own?

This has probably been stated somewhere before but after seeing this ep my friend and I were discussing that although his father-in-law plans to use him to protect Hanjo Group's interests, LCJ may be the double-edged sword against his father-in-law.

Placing Shi-Mok on the corruption investigation taskforce knowing full well this guy has a distaste for corruption, his emotions unwavering and indifferent to praise or criticism. Plus, LCJ's previous discussion with his wife that if it wasn't for her, he would've left her father a long time ago.

Keep it coming! Ready for more!

I also have a feeling that I think LCJ is an ok person. I don't know how to explain this but certain actions of his made me think so. At first, he recognized Eun Soo's father as his mentor and, despite what happened with the father, he still remembered the time and came to pay respect to him when nobody noticed. I also question his intention to set up this investigation team positioning Shi Mok as the head. He surely knew full well the capabilities of Shi Mok; if he just wanted to do something his father-in-law had suggested, to find a scape goat and let Shi Mok think he could catch him/her, I think he should have done something wiser than putting Shi Mok in this very important and influential position.

In all, I just don't think he is the villain in this story. That's my intuition.

Okie. I want YJ to work alone by herself at times atleast. Just because she gets to know SM doesnt mean that she should forego her own work.
Her questioning of her dept head, transferring GY to a different hospital, thinking about how to get a witness for Park's son, she should do it. This is what makes one kickass i.e. to be good at one's job and perform it independently. I'd hate it for her to become just a sidekick to SM. Nope, infact here the female lead is much better than the male (idealistic she is made out to be , but I'll let that pass, heck who doesnt want to aspire be such a person). SM gets all sorts of conflicting takes here, but YJ isn't it pure love by all? :)

Which makes me come back to the scene of the interrogation. I was thinking from the previews she cries for GY's plight as a brutalised victim but man, the writer and the actress Doona Bae took this to a whole another level. The dialogue could have become didactic but in the hands of this actress it became goosebump inducing a plea. Liked it a lot.

"On a different note, I keep getting the sense that Eun-soo imagines herself as the heroine of an epic revenge melodrama."
This is harsh. That woman has been completely , mentally , physically, emotionally been consumed by that act of betrayal and her father's downfall. To be completely consumed by one particular incident / emotion and let your life be driven by it , is supremely saddening. All the men by her side just don't care (her father) or take advantage of it (SM).
This can lead to a complete mental breakdown. I hope she gets help. I hope YJ and she come together. I hope that her father whatever he is hiding and the ensuing shenanigans that follow will make her see sense and distance herself from these vicious emotions. ES, at times, my heart goes out to her.

I've seen it in other sites but I feel Eun Soo is getting the short end of the stick unnecessarily. She is not the second female lead and there's no love triangle here, how is that even possible when the two women haven't even met and are driven by their own agenda. In the absence of a conventional bitchy female lead, I see a lot of people projecting the similar feelings that we feel for them on her. I don't know why she is getting that though. Is Shi Mok himself that different than Eun Soo other than having no emotional attachment to the case in hand? He almost got himself incriminated by tampering with the crime scene which he did repeatedly in the beginning, threatened a potential witness and he is constantly taking calculated risks. He even watched while an assault was happening right in front of his eyes. I see slight gender bias here, I am sorry but there is. His behaviors are seen through rose tinted window in a lot of cases while Eun Soo gets bashed. Am I excusing Eun Soo's behavior, hell no. This is the second time she was reckless and she deserved that shouting by all means. But I don't see that as an act of wanting attention, it shows her desperation.
"On a different note, I keep getting the sense that Eun-soo imagines herself as the heroine of an epic revenge melodrama." - this feels unnecessarily harsh on her.

@laica, thanks for the recap. Like all of you here, i think this show is just awesome. It has risen to the top 2 favourite shows of mine. I have to however watch a few times before i can fully understand what they are talking about as the dialogue is fast and many times loaded with meaning behind them. There are also scenes which pass by so quickly that i have to go rewatch as i am sure they mean something. i was rewatching earlier episodes when SM/YJ mentioned that Seo was not from a good university, and in the scene where they were congratulating Chief Lee for getting his promotion to Chief Prosecutor, Section Chief Kang suggested to ES to organise an alumni gathering (as Yoon is from the same Uni as well as SM), and the camera panned over to Seo's face who looked inferior and embarrassed. It was just 2-3 seconds but the director wanted to show his traits.
- Coming back to this episode, @laica is correct. YJ takes the cake. So cool and professional, and full of humanity. i am sure she will eventually persuade Gun or other colleagues to come forward about the beating of Kyung Wan.
- As for Yoon, i have a question. He reported to Chief Lee about SM's condition. But why was it when Section Chief Kang questioned him in an earlier episode, the told Kang nothing much was dug out about SM? Why did he have to hide this information from Kang?

I think Yoon's motivation will come up again. He came back to work after a long leave of absence following the death of his child in which it seems justice may not have been served. He must suspect corruption he wants brought to light and perhaps Chief Lee put him into play. Chief Lee was also his superior and may have told him to keep the intel about Shi mok a secret as it would not benefit his future plans for the special investigation unit.
S.C. Kang said it seemed unusal that many of the people involved in prosecution of the bribery scandal of Eun soo's father had all converged again after being dispersed.

In accordance with the last paragraph you said, isn't it like the retrial/reinvestigation of Eun Soo's father? I would believe that the now Secretary to the President Lee made this happen by appointing Shi Mok as the head investigator. This prediction is supported by Lee's respectful opinion toward Eun Soo's father and many actions of his. There is a scene also which we saw that Shi Mok erased Lee's name from the investigation request form. Is it possible that Shi Mok also sensed Lee's non-involvement in these crimes?

First of all, let me thank @laica or this wonderful recap! Isn't it difficult to grasp everything which happened in the episode? just wow.

In the last recap, I think Yeon Jae is behind of all this because of her too much love for her husband, but as just one if not more beanies have suggested, I think the show purposely directs too much attention to her so I think she's not the one anymore. And my guess is now shifted to our lovely, dear but manipulative Eun Soo.

HaHa.

This is just my guess, but isn't it horrid if she's the one behind all of these? Many beanies have suggested that she is indeed manipulative and there is certain air of strangeness around this character which even Shi Mok notices this (he even said she wasn't normal). I just had a thought that if, and indeed, if all her actions have been carefully calculated and every impulsive/manipulative act was indeed carefully planned.. it's quite possible to understand the whole picture of the story. If she truly thinks that her father is innocent, then this incentive is I think more than enough to try to show the public this fact.

And a murder of CEO Park, the murder attempt of a school female student happened. The latter happened, as Shi Mok suggested, as if the murderer of CEO Park wasn't satisfied why the wrongdoings of Park hadn't been declared to the public. To think that Eun Soo is indeed behind these stories, then many puzzles can be fixed. She had a lot of time preparing for her bar exam three years ago. She could definitely dived into police's records when she was a junior prosecutor. She could find out about that ex-convicted cable TV repairman and planned everything in advance. She met with Park, told him to call Shi Mok in the following day, plan everything that the cable guy would come to the house before Shi Mok and involve Shi Mok in this case. She knows what Shi Mok is capable of. She wants him to expose her father's innocent as she believes he is.

That's why she is always wanting to be included in the team, as that's only when she knows how this investigation team is doing. And that might be the cause of these manipulative, impulsive acts of her that even Shi Mok senses something so he excludes her from the investigation. I think he definitely feels something strange around her. He doesn't trust her and that's precisely why he's uncomfortable around her and her advances on him.

But I also feel like she's genuinely into Shi Mok to at least certain degree. So I think her advances on him are her somewhat real intention together with her intention to be in this team. Call me a pessimistic now but if this approach is correct, she could even borrow his clothes and return this sweater so that she could 'go' into the investigation room to have a look at some documents. (Her real romantic intention can be seen from her buying him a new sweater).

I think she shows her motive perhaps trying to gain Shi Mok's trust when she volunteered to help...

him getting Dong Jae. I think this assignment showed us very clearly how much Eun Soo wanted to be part of this team. And I also believe that Shi Mok wouldn't assign such a dangerous task to anybody if there wasn't more than what met the eyes. I think he might be suspicious of Eun Soo, and wanted to know more about her. Her wanting to make her father's innocence known to the public is so strong and she was almost 'not normal' as Shi Mok put it in this episode.

Isn't it so twisting if it turns out to be like this? haha if the real mastermind in this drama turns out to be the naive-looking, young and beautiful new prosecutor it's going to be so wow. I develop my own theory of who is who every single episode so this is my guess from thinking about what happened from the first until this episode. There are many episodes left so I will see if I will develop a new one or I can stick with this one. This show is so good that I am so invested in it (and in Jo Seung Woo as well). Bae Doona is also lovely and, as many Beanies said, she shows to be the perfect match for our dear, robotic hero. Please let these two lonely souls develop a good trust in each other and let the love flower bloom.

I'm guessing Eun-soo tailed KTG and then when she realized he was about to run away, hopped in his truck and called Yoon to follow. And then called SM to let him know/get him to come help.

This whole trailing the guy incident is chaos.
So if Yoon was after the guy already why did he not call SM to tell him that the guy is running away? When Yoon calls him after ES's call, he just says that yes, he has got hold of ES whereabouts, can see her and tells SM to come to that place. So I'm wondering if ES gave a lead or interrupted the process in that Yoon would have handled the guy on his own? May be he would have..?..

Come to think of it.. the only persons who will benefit from exposing these murder and murder attempt cases to the public are Eun Soo and her father. Others will only be ruined because of the public investigation of such cases. And because it's very evident that these cases have been made sure catch the public's attention (two cases at the same houses, letters of the ex-convicted committing suicide were sent to the media), I become more inclined toward believing that it might have been our lovely Eun Soo all along.

And she fits other puzzles in this story pretty well.
- Someone suggested that the person who attempted to murder the school girl had to know about this investigation; Eun Soo was also in Dong Jae's special investigation team.
- Shi Mok was once suspicious of Eun Soo's hight. He came to a conclusion that a person's height is directly affected by how high the heels of the shoes are. Though Eun Soo normally uses flat shoes as many scenes suggest, there was at least one time when Shi Mok saw her wearing high heels with some dry mud on the heels.
- She was after that delivery man by herself, making sure that he was to be captured alive. Who is going to benefit from him being captured alive if not Eun Soo's father. And because Chairman Lee was also informed that the only person they could not track was this delivery man, how devoted one must be to be able to track such person without the superior's order?
- There was a time when Eun Soo's mother talked to her husband about how she wanted both Eun Soo and Shi Mok to become a couple; I was quite surprised to see how Eun Soo's father rejected this suggestion very suddenly and firmly without giving anymore reason. As for the fact that he once stated that a person's nature never changes, and he also acknowledged the ability of Shi Mok as a prosecutor, it prompts me to wonder why his reaction to his wife's suggestion is pretty firm, sudden and confident. I couldn't avoid thinking that he might know what his daughter was doing. Well, that's a very speculated guess, but his sudden reaction really makes me a bit suspicious.

The reasons why I don't think the now President's Secretary Lee is the one behind all of these is because he is shown to still respect his former superior, Eun Soo's father. I don't feel like he was faking, but I also understand pretty well why he chose such decisions in his life. He is a very ordinary person who could be swayed by ambition (like blocking his friend's number right away when the person was investigated by the police). He was also flawed as he once stated that everything happened with one small meal offerred by a stranger. I wonder if he actually wanted Shi Mok to unsolve these cases and uproot every wrongdoings which happened in the prosecutor office in the past.

Even with the most innocent interpretation of Eun Soo, let's not forget she was eager to take the case and prosecute CEO Park's murder when she knew there was more the story at least with his bribing prosecutors, and she doesn't seem too broken up about using unethical means to put in jail a man who turned out to be innocent and commited suicide. And then she pretended to help Shi Mok find who last met with Park and didn't confess it was her until she figured Shi Mok was on to her. So I'm still suspicious of her, too (although I'm suspicious of everyone in this show), but not sure where she is on the scale from simply untrustworthy to diabolical genius. I'd put her on a 7 right now.

On a different note, I keep getting the sense that Eun-soo imagines herself as the heroine of an epic revenge melodrama. She continues to force herself into situations in order to further her own goals—there’s nothing natural about anything she does, and her encounters with Shi-mok feel especially forced.
---
Oh I think you're quite on point on this. There's something so off and eerie about eun soo, but I can't come to a conclusion about what it really is. Her dogged attitude of serving shin mok and trying to bring Mr. Lee down has been scary and I'm waiting to see how much more she will do in her pursuit.
And I really love how the show doesn't go the typical kdrama revenge romance route lol. In any other kdrama, the hero would probably fall for eun soo by this time, but shin mok is mostly and very fittingly,( if I may say so) is irritated by eun soo's invasive behavior and tell her to stay away, since she's being too nosy and trying to provoke him, when he doesn't want to take her to the team.
I would have loved, if they showed a bit more insights of the characters, we only see them working fanatically in solving the crime, but as of now, there has not been any attempt made to show us their psychological sides, their emotional ups and downs, at least of shi mok's. Would the show try to do something that will help shi mok change? Or will yeo jin bring out the best in him, for good? I really hope they do, but at this phase, with only six episodes left, I am not sure. Though I can see that the smiles have been there on each episode and quite frequently so haha.

It is in an earlier episode. There was a scene when Chief Prosecutor Lee says something like "with my heart" and then SM suddenly notes this and asks him why did he said "with my heart (?)" since most people say sincerely. Then LCJ suddenly remembers about Mr. Yoon's report about his mental condition. Does this scene have any significance?
Then in ep9 Jung bon takes a piece of the bread SM was eating. I saw many comments stating that he is creepy for taking bread from SM. Is this a cultural thing? Becoze I do share food with my friends but then again SM and Jung bon are not exactly friends.
LCJ didn't share Eun Soo's father's warning to chairman Lee. Is this because things were already planned to go this way or Special Investigation is LCJ's plan to expose his father in law.
Can somebody shed light on these things?

They aren't friends, but they did go to middle school together. It is exactly the sort of thing that middle schoolers would do, more so then adults. And they went from middle school classmates to meeting again as adults, so Jung-bon might well be stuck in his middle school way of interacting with Shi-mok (also when he addresses him, out of past habit, in banmal).

I also do think that 'sharing' food is not that abnormal in Korea – I am friends with an Italian-Korean couple, the Korean shares (she says because of growing up with "banchan" dishes, which are meant for sharing), the reluctant Italian had to be convinced by his wife ;-) Of course, grabbing a bit of someone's bread is different then sharing dishes at a table, but still – as I said, I think it's middle-school behaviour we're seeing.

I felt that the chief prosecutor was poking at Shi Mok, since he (and pretty much only he) knows about Shi Mok's surgery and its effects.

The bread scene I thought was very interesting. On the surface, it would seem to be another one of Jung Bon's careless overfamiliarity based on their previous acquiantance. But like everything else in the show, if you read another layer into it, he could be putting on an act as the bumpkin of the group, and/or he could be showing off a close relationship with Shi Mok, or who knows, maybe he belongs on that whiteboard. It did seem very deliberate how he walked all the way around the table to try Shi Mok's bread in front of everyone.

I wondered if the bread thing was not just about Jung-Bon but also prosecutor Yoon. He bought the bread and right after Shi-Mok comments that the bread is not particularly good and Jung-Bon agrees, the camera pans to Prosecutor Yoon and shows him looking a little hurt. I wonder if that scene is to illustrate the different ways the different folks interact each other. There was the shot with the coffee and also in the previous episode when Clerk Choi took food over to Shi-Mok. Maybe the show is trying to show the comfort level different members have with each other using food.

I dearly wish that Prosecutor Yoon had nothing to do with all those crimes. I mean I keep remembering that he lost a child due to an accident a couple of years ago. CEO Park was also involved in an accident a couple of years ago. If that child turns out to be Prosecutor's Yoon, did he take revenge on CEO Park since he used his connection to prevent him being sued by prosecutor? If I remember correctly, Prosecutor Yoon also took some years off after that incident, did he use those years to plan something? Did he have any idea about what was going on with his child's case? The way he came to Shi Mok and told him about his research on Shi Mok was quite sweet, and the way he saw Shi Mok after realizing that Shi Mok chose him despite knowing what he had done was quite touching.

But nah.. I don't think he's involved in all those bad things, he's just so sweet! Even Section Chief Kang also said so and Shi Mok even asked Kang how he could be kind to Yoon. *satisfied*

Ah, I forgot Prosecutor Yoon brought the bread, and mostly for Shi Mok (and this was after he confessed his background investigation on Shi Mok and seemed grateful that Shi Mok already new and brought him on the task force, anyway).

Great point about the use of food - now that I think about it, there are so many examples. Shi Mok started out eating alone in the cafeteria. There was the meal where his superiors talked about him getting audited, and then they ate his meal after he had to leave. Then Yeo Jin is feeding Shi Mok and diluting his soup. There's the unsatisfying dinner at the Chief Prosecutor's house where nobody ate. Then the team-building dinner afterwards without Shi Mok, and now they're all breaking bread together.

I was looking through my suspect lists and had to go back to the beginning. There are two questions that keep coming back to me. Why was the dog killed? and why was the cable technician (I'm sorry I forgot his name) framed? If the intent was to expose the Prosecution Service's corruption then the murder of Park Myung-Sun would have started an investigation and everything would have come out. When PMS died, LCJ, Dong Jae and Eun-Soo were both interested in closing the case quickly. No one appeared interested in digging deeper except Shi-Mok. If the blood in the alley had not been found by Yeo-Jin then everything would have been neatly wrapped up. So why kill the dog? The killer is shown as someone Whois meticulous and knew the neighborhood and its residents, so he would have known about the dog, right? Was the dog killed because it was at the wrong place at the wrong time? If so, killing the dog (and framing the cable tv technician) shows an intent to cover up PMS's activities and corruption not being it to light. However, the attack on Ga-young and the leaking of corruption in the Prosecutor's Office to the news papers shows an intent to publicize PMS's activities and corruption. They don't jive neatly.
Also, at this point I'm not sure if the attack on Ga-young is related to PMS's murder. Could they be separate attacks carried out by different people for different reason? So many questions?
At this point in wondering if there is a suspect we have not been introduced to. Shi-Mok and Chief Kang's discussion about how it's odd that they both ended up in the same office after the Il-Jae investigation seems to point at something that has not been revealed yet. OMG! It's too intense!! ??

The dog was killed to be buried at a place that was directly below the fence where the victim's blood was. YJ is asked to investigate the case of the dog as a separate case and while doing so, listening to the owner's story that the dog disappeared the same day as the murder , gets YJ look for clues around that place only to find the blood stain. Which then shows that the case was investigated wrongly and furthers the doubts of SM and YJ, thus taking them to where they are now.
The blood stain would never have been found unless the dog had died or as YJ says she should have searched the whole neighbouring areas for evidences. Which she didn't.

The electrician, I think, was planted because he has a history of suicide attempts and he succeeds to do so after blaming the officers. So then the case , after YJ's leaking of the blood stain to the media and the TV guy's death prove that the murder case was something more. And it came to the public eye and slowly to this stage of corruption, bribery and the ilk.
Hope this helps.

Thank you for your nice summary. It refreshes more of my memory. But my questions remain mainly because I was trying to understand the motivations of the bad guy(s) to see if I can figure out who the culprit is. Another thing that I jut realized was that there have been two acts of violence and two instances when Shi-Mok had ear pain/pass out. Coincidence? ?

This, I'm going all with the series. Rather than who the culprit is , for me, the reveals of the characters - their mental strengths weaknessness and shifty moral compasses, the why's , Im all focused on that.

I don't think it is one person's convoluted plan as there are too many variables that change the game while in play.
The dog was killed to gain a back entrance to the house. Which in turn drew attention to the blood on the fence. This became evidence that there was another killer in the house at the time that the cable guy arrived.
I wonder if there was a double cross by the killer. The killer was ordered to set up the cable guy for the murder of CEO Park, but he had motivations of his own and left enough clues to blow up a quiet frame.

After reading as many views, speculations, theories and questions as I can, I conclude:
1. I need Shi Mok's brain
2. I need a massive white board to do those web of suspects/links
3. I need FOS next episode. NOW!

Thank you for this recap!

I think the rookie cop Soon Chang is not corrupt at this time, but he will be easily manipulated by the bad guys. Same with Gun. He probably thought what he did for Chief Kim was harmless and since it had been a favor from his own boss. I didn’t really trust Gun even before this episode.

Soon Chang has done a few good things to help Yeo Jin, but I’m still a bit nervous about her giving info to him and others besides Shi Mok.

Section Chief Kang! Even though he was rough with Shi Mok before, he doesn’t seem so bad now. I like that he and Shi Mok are sharing information. I hope he is on the good side.

Oh boy. I feel like there's an uncomfortable amount of ire directed towards Eun-soo, because I can definitely understand where she's coming from no matter how absolutely reckless she's being. She HAS been desperately waiting for this day. Sort of... castigating Eun-soo to prop Yeo-jin up when they are two equally amazing and interesting characters. They stir up different emotions in Shi-mok, and I do appreciate it a lot as a view. Yeo-jin gets enough love (and gosh do I love her), but sometimes I feel the need to defend Eun-soo until I'm blue in the face LOL

Doesnt she get so much really? And this is so unwarranted. ES is a go getter . Never depending on anyone but who takes the lead. Right now her path is murky , heck even SM isn't all clean instigating all sorts of violent acts, acting violent himself (that he picturises himself as the killer is not a surprise).
What was striking is that this whole episode of bribe was completed so flatly, her clearing of her fathers name became just a casual offshoot of the investigation. I was like, gosh thats it. The reactions , at home, the usual dram of yay victory, all not there at all.
Now what is ES going to do, is the main qn on my mind. She is not SM's team, her father is cleaned up, now what is she going to do?

As well if YJ works alone, most of the reactions are, gosh thats sad , its lonely , she needs SM by her side to wok as partners. But ES calling SM after finding out the lead is akin to her piling it on him, being a nuisance. When it isn't.
I find this quite hypocritical and its expected because YJ is made to be this perfect goddess who needs all the goodness come her way. But ES, what about her? I want her to do well as well. She needs the goodness leading of a good mentor which sadly noone is at the moment.
Its telling how a character reveals a lot of not herself but of the viewers themselves who give such reactions.
Who does ES have on her side, not even her father! Her mum is pretty ineffectual and positive colleagues, who?

Thanks God someone commented that, I actually felt like I was the weird one for not understanding all the hate.
I love Shi-Mok, but his phrase "you are not acting normal" was funny coming from him. He might act like that, but he actually supports her ways, in previous episode he nearly let Dong-Jae kill her just to check her theory. Ironically, people didn't really discuss that and only talked about Eun-Soo being crazy

Man, really how can one do this! I want this act of SM to be publicised. I so so so want this to become known to everybody in the series. That he can actually abet murder. Than he can murder. Am so angry now, gosh.

I have a feeling she knows about her father's flash drive, and I don't think there's any way she wouldn't be involved in getting those secrets out in the open... whether Young Il-jae likes it or not.

I am worried for our team. The last 2 episodes being too positive for the team's progress...It can not be this easy.

Now the main antagonists are threatened, will the threats to Shi-mok's life be brought forward. Given the culprits have no qualms in killing to make a point and are powerful enough to topple ministers; Shi-mok and/or Yeo-Jin would be little more than a speed-bump to them.

I agree, but I also think that attempts on YeoJin and/or ShiMok's lives would be too obvious. And assuming that they survived the attempt, then they'd definitely tell the public about it. And then there'd be even more chaos.

My theory is that someone/s (Chairman Lee? Lee YeonJae??
EunSoo??? Lee ChangJoon????) will have the weaker links killed --> GaYoung perhaps, or Grandma if the hints in the 5-min trailer are anything to go by. Getting rid of those two would shut up Park KyungWan (thus decreasing the outcry from the public) and get rid of a potential informant in GaYoung.

If the culprits are thinking that killing the small fry would make ShiMok and YeoJin stop, well then they just have another thing coming. :D

Agreed, it is risky. It all depends on who the antagonist can pin any deaths on. The show has established a number of patsies who have ulterior motives.
Eg. Grandma, Dong-Jae, Eun-Soo, Jung-Bon, or any number of the police...Think anyone who has too much screen time for the plot so far.

It is even possible that if this is all a power play for the Lee family empire, any one of the Lee’s could use this to frame and fully oust the others.

I'm so happy that this drama is getting so much attention and comments on dramabeans. I want everyone to watch it and love it ?
From the 5-minute trailer, I didn't think grandma was the one who dies. I thought it was Il-Jae. He's holding something back and I wonder if Eun-Soo would hand over the USB to Shi-Mok hoping to help him and that sets of a chain reaction. I never thought of grandma dying. That would be super sad.
I've been trying to figure out who is the person in the 5-min trailer that Yeo-Jin flips and is shown ready to punch her. They focus on the raised hand and Yeo-Jin's distraught face and I'm hoping it's not Shi-Mok or Gun or hoobae cop.

Chief Kim asks to go to the bathroom as he is escorted out.
I seriously thought he was going to kill himself.... that would have been a hell of a twist plot.
Eun Soo has a manipulative side to her but I don't think she is the "evil" love interest. She just doesn't have much limits but I do think she's sincere in her will to show how much she values Shi Mok as a sunbaenim and as a potential lover. I feel like the writer wants to tell us there is a chance Shi Mok develops feelings for her, esp when he actually loses his temper or seems worries about her reckless attitude. Sometimes it feels like he's just bothered by a fly that keeps hanging around his ears lol. I don't know but I'm not seeing them together.
Shi Mok and Yeo Jin feels different. There is a complicity, a tacit understanding. Sometimes no need for words they just get each others.
Anyway there is so many things to discuss about this show. The writing remains great in making us think hard about the nature of our characters' relationships.

I don't see Shi Mok having a romantic interest in Eun Soo, but she should get credit for being the only person besides Yeo Jin who can elicit an overt emotional reaction from him.

Yeo Jin has to be one of the most bad ass women I have seen on screen ever (not just in kdramas). She's so wonderfully fleshed out that I can't help feeling so invested in her.

But for the first time this episode (and I noticed there were a few others who also shared my thoughts), I was a tad annoyed with Eun Soo. She's been impulsive throughout the series, but I've constantly brushed it off, trying to rationalize that she's just this way because she's been through a lot. But cmon Eun Soo, staaahp.
