The Best Hit: Episodes 7-8
by gummimochi
The things a guy will do for a smartphone. Newfangled accessories might be Hyun-jae’s latest fixation, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t interested in how he ended up in a world that has seemingly moved on without him. Past reminders keep popping up around him, and one important encounter could be the key to solving an unresolved mystery.
EPISODE 7 RECAP
Hyun-jae is puzzled when he’s notified of an incoming message on his pager: 22198. But when he tries calling his old pager number, it no longer exists, confusing him further.
Back on the steps, Ji-hoon hovers a hand over Woo-seung’s shoulder until Woo-seung unexpectedly pops up and re-energizes herself to carry on with life. She’s in a much better mood now because she’s won the battle against herself… and Ji-hoon points out that fighting against herself means she also lost.
In any case, Woo-seung decides to remain optimistic and now it’s time to exact revenge on the person who gave her a decades-old candy bar. Cut to: Woo-seung chasing Hyun-jae around in circles with a frying pan. HA.
Ji-hoon bounces back and forth taking sides, concurring with Woo-seung that giving her an expired treat gave her the runs, whilst also agreeing that Hyun-jae had no malicious intent. Hyun-jae claims that he didn’t suffer from eating that same chocolate and accuses her of not properly preparing for her exam by going to the bathroom ahead of time. Not. Helping.
Frustrated, Woo-seung revs up for a swing just as MC Drill bolts up, and she hits him full-force in the face, knocking him out cold.
The family notices Grandpa’s apathetic behavior at the breakfast table, which Kyung-jae explains is because of “seeing Hyun–” before awkwardly modifying that to “seeing things.”
Mal-sook chimes in that someone else is secretly living with Ji-hoon in the rooftop room. Grandpa jumps up, terrified, and Bo-hee questions her further, whereas Kyung-jae doesn’t think anything of it.
Upstairs, MC Drill affirms that beepers are obsolete in this day and age (you can’t even get service for one). He hasn’t the faintest idea why Hyun-jae’s pager would’ve rang (or literally, “cried”), but says that maybe it was sad… like him. Aww.
Seeing Woo-seung leave with him, Hyun-jae wonders why either of them would bother leaving the house when they both failed their respective exams. They’ve both decided to stick with their goals, and MC Drill believes that Ji-hoon is a shoe-in for an upcoming debut, saying that his performance made him cry more than when he left for army.
“You served in the military?” Woo-seung asks, confused (since that would add two more years to his age). MC Drill quickly takes it back.
At the agency, MC Drill plops down next to Ji-hoon and tells him not to forget him when he becomes successful, promising to follow in his footsteps soon.
Star Punch’s CEO Young-jae walks in to announce who will be in the agency’s next male idol group. When he says, “Drill,” MC Drill cries in celebration… until Young-jae instructs him to take off his headphones so he can hear properly. Womp.
Ji-hoon waits with anticipation as Young-jae calls out the five names of those in this debut team… but he gets to the last one and Ji-hoon isn’t called. MC Drill protests that something must’ve gone awry, but that’s not the kind of thing Ji-hoon wants to hear right now.
He heads up to the roof instead, and freaks out when someone kicks him from behind. It’s Hye-ri, who repeats his own words about how he looked like he was going to jump and tells him to live if he wants to debut one day.
She doesn’t mince words with him, adding that the guys who were picked today were better than him. She does, however, look back to toss him his lunchbox, and then adds that she thought he was a little bit cool yesterday. But just a little.
Bo-hee leaves Grandpa to look after the bakery, which makes him bitterly remark that he’d rather die early. But then he takes it back, remembering that he saw Reaper Hyun-jae the last time he said that.
He gets grumpy over a news article about self-management prevention measures for dementia (“I’m still too young!”), but ends up reading it anyway.
Young-jae struggles in a meeting with a music producer (cameo by MC Gree, Kim Gura’s son) who’s been tasked with adding some color to the melody he’s stolen from Hyun-jae, but Young-jae is unable to comprehend any of the music lingo he’s hit with. Young-jae describes the sound he’s looking for with a nonsensical string of drum sound effects.
He’s scared out of his wits when he finds an Italian technician under his desk working on his malfunctioning chair, and throws him out. He pulls out Hyun-jae’s music notebook from his safe, but something in it catches his attention, and he asks if anyone else has been in his office.
Turns out Hyun-jae’s recent doodle of a cell phone is superimposed over the notes on the page. Hyun-jae still has his own copy with him, which only contains a doodle. Oh, so Young-jae is looking at a song that Hyun-jae hasn’t written yet?
Hyun-jae seems to have made a full adjustment to the digital era, as he groans at how bored he is without either of his devices working properly. He heads back to Woo-seung’s room to get a better Wi-Fi signal and reads about how his car was found abandoned by a lake in 1994.
He wonders if going there might trigger some memories… an idea quickly abandoned by him playing mobile games instead, since he has no money to travel anywhere. LOL. He ends up woefully thinking of how those bagfuls of cash would be worth a fortune even today, and then he remembers that he had an emergency fund.
He digs into his box of possessions and fishes out a copy of In Search of Lost Time. He prays his money is still there, flips through the pages, and finds two banker’s checks. Score!
Kwang-jae is excited when the PD who rebuffed him earlier (Park Hyuk-kwon) calls back to give Bo-hee a variety guest spot. Kwang-jae doesn’t know that Bo-hee is a last-minute replacement and explains the music show’s noraebang challenge format to her later that night.
Bo-hee likes the idea, asking if there’s a chance for a reappearance if she wins. She’s confident that she doesn’t need to practice for a show within her field of expertise.
But she ends up at the noraebang where Woo-seung works anyway, annoyed when she gets the lyrics wrong again. Just outside, Woo-seung pulls her hair out running her finances and realizes she doesn’t have enough to get her own place.
On her way home, she spots Ji-hoon sitting alone on the swings. This time, it’s her turn to take a seat next to him. She can tell that he didn’t make the cut and welcomes him to “loser world,” the land full of disappointment and failures. Ji-hoon scoffs, saying that he’s already a resident.
She advises him to quit the idol trainee track and study to get a job that actually pays. She finds his flip-flopping attitude about staying in the industry complicated, so she pulls him to a merry-go-round and spins him around. He gets off because he’s getting dizzy, but that’s exactly her point: “Find your center. It may seem like the world is spinning, but it’s actually you.”
The next day, Hyun-jae does his usual routine of squatting in the attic storage closet for the strongest Wi-Fi signal. He doesn’t seem to care when Ji-hoon chides him for sitting in Woo-seung’s room, and scowls that they should be grateful to have a celebrity in their midst.
Ji-hoon catches the slip-up, but accepts Hyun-jae’s response that he still doesn’t remember anything. Woo-seung walks in moments later and reclaims her phone to get Hyun-jae’s attention. Like a little kid, he asks for two more minutes and says the internet only works in this spot.
She warns him to leave, swinging a warning hook close to his face. Hyun-jae swats her arm away and catches her next punch with his fist. The mere mention of money makes her soften, and he promises to settle his debts with her if she follows him.
That’s how they end up at the bank, which is closed because it’s Saturday. Woo-seung is annoyed that Hyun-jae doesn’t already know that and calls herself a fool. He says that’s enough of a self-introduction and offers her a part-time gig: Take him to Lake Suryeon, and he’ll pay her for the day’s work. He shows her the banker’s check to prove it.
Instead of being impressed, Woo-seung asks if he stole this money. He’s offended but promises to pay her on Monday. But she wants indisputable proof that he’ll keep his word, so she records a video of his promise to pay her, or move out.
Her ears perk up when Hyun-jae says he remembered something. He leans in close to whisper, “I… hated people like you the most.” Hah.
Practically the whole motley crew accompanies Bo-hee to the TV station today. Grandpa suggests that they stop to buy lottery tickets because he had a lucky dream last night where he saw a fire-breathing dragon.
Believing she needs all the luck she can get, Bo-hee offers to buy that dream from him (following the Korean belief that you can sell a dream to someone along with its fortune). Grandpa takes the deal, saying that anything good that happens is because of him.
Hyun-jae is baffled by the all the lines in the expansive Seoul subway map of 2017. He’s even more amazed that people use a transit smart card, and Woo-seung adds that no one these days uses the catchphrase, “Thumbs up!”
Embarrassed, Woo-seung tells him to do something about his silly-looking hanging belt and walks ahead of him. Hyun-jae overhears a high-schooler talking to a friend on her phone in a string of incomprehensible abbreviated slang, which sounds like an alien language to his ears.
It belatedly occurs to him that he’s been left behind, though Woo-seung comes back to find him. Grabbing his wrist, she reminds him not to get distracted and follow her.
Meanwhile, Bo-hee gets ready on the set of the music competition show. When the writer arrives to welcome Bo-hee, Grandpa rambles on for an embarrassingly long time about how he’s a very important CEO who discovered Jay-2.
Bo-hee confirms that she’s prepared a yoga routine for the show, but is told that that’s nothing compared to other guests who can do a handstand on a tennis racket or play a recorder with their feet. Kwang-jae reassures her that her yoga routine will still get her screen time, but Bo-hee runs off after the writer with an idea.
Once Hyun-jae and Woo-seung arrive at Lake Suryeon, he walks up to the space where his car was found abandoned. He mulls over why he ended up at this spot and went missing in 1994. He wonders, what if it was made to look like he disappeared?
He finds a few items scattered on the ground, including a Jay-2 album and a framed photo of himself. Meanwhile, Woo-seung enjoys the outdoors and decides to send Ji-hoon a selca of her with the beautiful scenery.
While trying to get an ideal angle, her foot slips and her phone flies out of her hands and lands on a boat. She puts one foot on the boat, which only makes it move farther away, leaving her in a precarious straddled position.
On the back of the broken photo frame, Hyun-jae discovers a written message from Bo-hee: “I’ll always be waiting for you.” He then hears Woo-seung crying out for help and sees her fall into the lake.
Seeing her flail in the water, Hyun-jae runs into the lake to save her and drag her back to shore. He’s worried that she’s all wet, but his concern isn’t about her catching a cold, but about his precious phone getting wet. Lol.
He rummages through her bag to fish out Woo-seung’s old phone, and is utterly relieved to find that it’s still working. She bops him on the head for caring more about a device than a person, but he points out that she’s fine.
But in the plunge one of Woo-seung’s contact lenses has fallen out, leaving her vision compromised. So she has no choice but to blindly follow Hyun-jae, holding on to his belt for guidance. He tells her to acknowledge how useful his belt is, still upset over her calling it old-fashioned earlier.
EPISODE 8 RECAP
During the filming of Challenge! Gayo Star, it’s time for Bo-hee to show off her surprise hidden talent: chug down a whole bottle of soda in one go. Everyone, including the host, appears worried, but Bo-hee is determined to try.
It’s at that moment Kwang-jae remembers that Bo-hee was willing to do anything to make sure she’d become a regular cast member on this show and earn enough money to put out an album and pay back their mountain of debt.
He signals to Bo-hee not to do this, but she takes the bottle and starts chugging. The excitement grows as she keeps drinking and drinking. She successfully empties the bottle in one try and assures the host that she can still sing. Kwang-jae gives her two thumbs-up.
Things are looking even better when she chooses the perfect song (Kang Su-ji’s “Violet Fragrance”). She sings the first line just fine, but then suddenly lets out an involuntary roaring belch into the microphone that has so much force that it blows away everyone on set. An imaginary dragon appears, driving the point home.
Bo-hee apologizes, but then her body lets out another burp. Suffice it to say, she’s eliminated from the competition, and she hangs her head, mortified.
When Woo-seung tries to provide directions home, Hyun-jae says he doesn’t need them because his brain remembers how to get back. She asks if that means he remembers something, and Hyun-jae replies that he thinks he was smart.
But Woo-seung has to spell it out for him that she has to use the restroom, muttering that he may be smart but has no tact. He leads her down the road and points her to the bathroom. She tells him to stay put this time and leaves him with her bag.
Hyun-jae starts humming along to a song blaring through speakers nearby, but then it occurs to him that this is one of his songs. We flash back to when Hyun-jae was composing this very song, and Kwang-jae teased that he’d run off with his music notebook one day if Hyun-jae kept acting up.
Hyun-jae tracks down the song playing outside a bakery and asks the employee who the singer is. He doesn’t recognize the name MJ, but when she points to the life-size cardboard cutout of MJ in the store, Hyun-jae rips off the head so he can find the jerk who stole his song.
Woo-seung returns from the bathroom and hangs on to the first backpack she sees. Kim Jong-min (another 1N2D cast-mate) gives her a puzzled look, shoves her off of him, and walks away.
Realizing that she’s been abandoned yet again, she uses the pay phone to call Ji-hoon to meet her outside with cab fare and her glasses. She’s too exasperated to explain the full story, and a tear falls from her eyes.
Woo-seung blindly tries to cross the street by herself, despite not being able to see two feet in front of her. The pedestrian light turns red seconds later and passing cars honk at her to get out of the way. Just then, a hand grabs her elbow—it’s Hyun-jae, who pulls her close and repeats her earlier words, to not get distracted and follow him.
Hyun-jae takes her hand and safely leads her to the other side. Woo-seung lets go of Hyun-jae’s hand and flips out when she learns what time it is because she’s late for her other part-time job. Meanwhile, Ji-hoon waits outside wondering why Woo-seung is taking so long to get home.
Bo-hee is in the mood for a drink tonight, so they stop the car at a pojangmacha. Grandpa insists that Kwang-jae stay with her, tsking at him when he doesn’t get the hint that being a shoulder to lean on can open up Kwang-jae’s chances at romance.
Kwang-jae sits down with her and reassures her that burping is a natural human response, and promises to do his best in making sure that her burp doesn’t air on the show. He declines a drink because he wants to make sure she gets home safely. Aww.
She figures it’s because he’s her road manager, and he starts, “Not just because of that…” before accepting that drink after all. He says she can take her time; he hasn’t forgotten his promise to ensure her a successful comeback.
She thanks him for believing in her, and then lets out another burp. A pair of ajusshis cackle at her from the neighboring table, and she stops Kwang-jae from confronting them. So he orders a bottle of cola, chugs it in one go, and burps to prove that everyone burps and farts. His sweet gesture makes her smile.
Hyun-jae grumbles about helping a blind Woo-seung with work at the convenience store since he isn’t dirt poor anymore. He notices a tear fall from her eye, and she says she’ll do it herself, then knocks over several boxes.
He refuses to help, but he sees her struggle and ends up helping anyway. He wonders to himself if all women in 2017 are like Woo-seung or if she’s the exception.
MJ’s van happens to make an unexpected stop outside that convenience store when the road manager has to use the bathroom. His three obsessed fangirls are stalking MJ in a taxi, and they see him get out to buy himself a drink.
Hyun-jae helps him pick up a bottle he dropped, then recognizes MJ’s face. He hilariously holds up the cardboard face as a comparison and calls MJ out for not being the original songwriter for the single “Come Back Again.”
MJ says he’s got the wrong man, but Hyun-jae won’t let him go without an answer: “Be honest. Where did you steal it? How did you steal it?” Woo-seung hears the commotion, but the fangirls get there first. One of them kicks Hyun-jae from behind, which kicks off a huge food fight.
MJ slips away as a fangirl grabs Hyun-jae’s hair. He pulls her off, only to be hit with a large package of toilet paper and pummeled with bags of chips. He pushes the fangirls away and roars, but the girls return fire with bullets of sparkling water.
Woo-seung reaches around blindly trying to see what’s going on, and the fight is finally put to stop by her angry boss. Needless to say, she gets fired and is paid off with snacks in place of her wages. She finds Hyun-jae’s claims that MJ was at the convenience store absurd, but he fires back that MJ’s crazy fangirls were there.
She whines that nothing has gone right ever since she met him, and to make matters worse, she’s left her bag at the store. Hyun-jae offers to go back for it, and calls out to her saying that nothing has gone right for him since he met her either. She breaks into an amused smile.
CEO Young-jae wonders who could’ve been responsible for that doodle in Hyun-jae’s notebook when the CCTV footage shows that no one trespassed in his office. But he has more important matters to attend to when MJ arrives and tells him that a stranger at the convenience store knew that he didn’t write “Come Back Again.”
MJ isn’t sure who that stranger was, but says he did look an awful lot like Young-jae’s former Jay-2 partner, Hyun-jae.
Woo-seung returns home to find that Ji-hoon has installed a digital door lock to her room (the passcode is her birthday, d’aw). She wonders where Ji-hoon is, not realizing that he’s running around all over town looking for her, worried sick that she never found her way back.
Hearing about a woman involved in an accident nearby, he starts running in a panic. But that’s when Woo-seung calls using MC Drill’s phone and asks him where he is. He denies that he ran out looking for her, and that’s when we see that he’s gone all the way back to where she first called him earlier that night.
Kwang-jae carries a drunk Bo-hee on his back and reassures her that there are people out there who still like her. She wonders what could’ve been if she hadn’t met Hyun-jae, and Kwang-jae says that’s all in the past—people have changed and so has the world: “What’s so important about the past? It’s the present that’s important.” (Hyun-jae = present.)
He adds that he means “the present,” not Hyun-jae, and believes they should let Hyun-jae go now. Her eyes closed, Bo-hee sheds a tear, and Kwang-jae promises to do his best to fill the void Hyun-jae left behind.
But then nature calls for Kwang-jae, so he gently puts her down on a bench and runs off to the bathroom. Hyun-jae happens to be walking down that very street and does a double take when he sees Bo-hee passed out, and worries about leaving her alone.
When Kwang-jae returns moments later, Bo-hee is gone. He looks around worriedly and sees a man carrying Bo-hee away on his back. He runs after them and pulls at the man’s arm… to find himself face to face with Hyun-jae.
Epilogue
Ha, it’s a cheesy ’90s commercial for the candy bar Freedom (the same one Hyun-jae brought with him from the past): An office woman sits down at her cubicle and chucks her purse at her desk, and the Freedom candy bar morphs into a tiny Hyun-jae, who then dances alongside the woman to the Jay-2 single “Say It.”
He thrusts the candy bar in the air and declares, “I’m free! Thank you, Freedom!” and flashes a smile at the camera.
COMMENTS
Oh boy, that’s going to be an awkward conversation. How do you explain to your former manager that you’re not dead and traveled twenty plus years into the future? Hyun-jae’s encounter with Kwang-jae is the one run-in I’ve been looking forward to the most, because they both know portions of the past not yet explained to us. For instance, how much did Kwang-jae know about Hyun-jae’s shady money dealings prior to his disappearance?
I’m getting a family sitcom feel to The Best Hit as we swing in and out of different subplots. Some storylines are more fun to follow (like Hyun-jae’s fish out of water experiences and his bickering relationship with Woo-seung) than others (like Hye-ri’s growing affections toward Ji-hoon), but I do find the string of scenes enjoyable, since there is a central mystery—namely Hyun-jae’s disappearance in the ’90s—and clear goals for our other characters, whether that’s a debut, a comeback, or praying that Death doesn’t come early for them.
I do find it amusing that Hyun-jae sees taking steps to solving his mysterious disappearance as a choice; he exhibits the classic genius behavior of single-minded devotion to particular interests, and currently, his main interest is one smartphone. But we also know that he’s smart in other ways, even if he often gets coerced into doing Woo-seung’s bidding. Despite his laid-back perspective on life, he still has a soft heart and he does care, exhibited when he saved Woo-seung’s life and came back for her, and also carried Bo-hee home. I was slightly worried that he might’ve thought Kwang-jae stole his music notebook, but was relieved that he guessed someone else must’ve nicked it.
As with any time-traveling series, there are bound to be consequences. Hyun-jae’s doodle magically appearing in the other copy of his music notebook is one, and that alone introduces a whole slew of new questions. What kind of consequences are there if Hyun-jae doesn’t return to the ’90s and never writes the song eventually written on that page? What happens should he decide to burn that notebook? What will he do (or can he do) when he finds out that his former duo partner has been plagiarizing his work for years? And most importantly—who left that message on his pager?

My new crack showwww! Hyn Jae is such an amazing character! I see a lot of chemistry between YSY and Se Young! So I wonder what's the deal with Bo Hee! What happened in 1994? Hmmm, nice hook! :D

Same here! I keep hoping that the reason he disappears (again?... has he disappeared from 1993?) is because that's when he returns to the future for good. Cause he's gonna have to go back to the past to resolve this whole stolen money thing, but I'm really rather hoping that he doesn't stay there...

What a cliffhanger!
Btw, Yu Hojin must be trolling Kim Jongmin with that 10-sec cameo, 80% of which he is blurred LOL. The international referee had more screen time >,<

I really like KJM, but man, why did he only appear on the screen for like, 10 seconds? I was expecting him to have a more substantial role, and appear for at least 5 minutes. Like Defcon did.

I truly admire KJM and was so happy to see him but alas it din't last long. They should have given him a comedy bit and he would have nailed it or a small street dance kind and he would have rocked it.

He didn't even say much. I know that they always said that Jong Min couldn't act in 1n2d but I would like if his cameo have been bigger/longer than this. I wonder if he'll make an appearance again like Jun Ho did - first scene at the noraebang and second at the hosp.

The cliffhanger... best one yet. I've been loving the special effects in this. Is this the "variety" part of it?

Imagine KJ finding out HJ has been living with them all this while. Imagine how he tries to hide HJ's identity from the others. I can't imagine the number of hijinks that can occur between these two. It would be damn hilarious!

I think the variety part of it, is in the running gags. Here are just a few:
HJ and WS accidental kisses
HJ leaving WS stranded
WS 'tear duct disorder'.
WS frying pan chases
“You remember?!!!”... “No I don’t remember”
MC Drill being shown as an uncool, uncoordinated, clingy, old trainee with stage fright (pretty much the polar opposite of the actor's real-life younger brother, Taeyang)
They've been worked in so well and absolutely crack me up. I don't think I'll ever get tired of seeing them.

I love the "do you remember" gag! It's the way Ji Hoon asks it (so serious and unsuspecting) and the way Hyun Jae responds (unrepentantly taking advantage of Ji Hoon). Anyone would grab him by the collar and be like "You obviously remember!"

It's also a late night timeslot- like 11pm. I think dramas usually take place around 10pm. And this is friday and sat night during the late spring. I'm sure some segment of the audience will want to go out and enjoy the weather .

LOL, this drama has more mysteries than Circle.
That whole belt thing was hilarious. How bad are your eyes if you can't see right in front of you, and can contacts actually help if you're that impaired?

I don't agree on this !
I have a really bad eyesight -9.50/-9.75 but i still dont behave like this. (in winter it happend i go until my desk at work with my glasses in my bag -to sleep longer while walking- hah)
Even if you sight is bad, you can still see colors, if there is someone or something in front of you, etc... so i found exagerate the way she used him (even if it was really endearing) in the field, or how she toppled the boxes in the store.
And to answer the question asked above by blnmom, unless you have "back" spot(s) on your vision, glasses or lens can correct it.

I have astigmatism and near-sightedness, wearing 600 (I don't know how it is measured in other countries) contacts for both eyes. Without them, not only eyesight, but balance and hearing are impaired, at least for me. Do you know those horror movies where the protagonists see silhouettes of ghosts? That's like me without glasses and contacts. It felt like you're surrounded by missing souls.

Now that I think about it, I do have more questions re: The Best Hit compared to Circle. Haha
My eyesight isn't as bad, but I can relate - I won't be able to get home without my glasses. Nearsightedness and astigmatism. I imagined she'd squint her eyes a lot more since I tend to do that without my glasses haha

Yea I was a little annoyed that the actress portrayed the “blindness“ quite literally. She should have squint a lot instead of doing all that open-dead-eye thing. But other than that, I really enjoy her portrayal and chemistry with YSY so far.

What's up with the toilet gags? WS failed her exams because she had a stomach upset. KJ left BH on the bench because of a stomach upset too. Can't the writer come up with something else?

Haha, don't forget MJ's manager. This could be called 'the day everyone had to go to the bathroom'. I think they did it on purpose this time, both as joking and serious (KJ said that it's a normal part of living). Like you, I could do with less of it.

toilet gags are a stable of korean comedy, but there were so many in this episode, I was like "what's in the korean food that is causing so many people in the drama to get IBS? Maybe they should eat less of it?"
I've been having gastrointestinal issues in the past month and the gags make me wince since the feeling is still so very fresh.

I loathe toilet humor, but it seems Koreans love it, since it's in pretty much every drama, so you just have to get used to it or skip over it like I usually do.

Aww.. KimJongMin cameo is soo short. He barely showed his 'foot-acting'. Yoo PD, Ra PD you guys better give him another scene!
Now KJ have seen/touch HJ I cant wait to see what happens next! I really need to know what happen during the time between HJ travelling to future and 1994 when he was assumed died.

Poor Bo Hee... I thought her desire to be on screen was some kind of ego-nostalgia, but it seems she's doing it to pay off debts. I was really worried when she drank that whole bottle that she would burp into the microphone, but I let my guard down since the song was going ok, and then... the dragon came out. I nearly died laughing and out of second-hand embarrassment. I can't stop laughing while I watch this show. That food store fight was epic. I played it about 3 times (was there a Park Bo Gum commercial on the TV?). It reminded me of another slow-mo food fight I loved, in Drinking Solo

Haha it just hit me that "ta bom" could be konglish for "da bomb" which is defined in urban dictionary as: "An old but cool way of calling something awesome. The term was used a lot in the mid to late 90s." Those of us who are old enough might remember using it. ?

Woo-seung recounting her hellish day to Ji-hoon with resigned voice and suppressed sigh totally cracked me up. I don't blame her for having no energy to bicker, seeing how the guy who dragged her there was more worried about his cellphone than her life. And Ha!! At least his loo~ong belt served another useful purpose.
I like how Ji-hoon is clearly worried about Woo-seung with her bad eyesight, but the show didn't make him dive into dramatic territory. I wonder what is it about him that attract me more than my usual preference of "bad guy" a la Hyun-jae.

Too many favourite moments in these two episodes but I cracked up hard at the whole subway scene. I can't understand why she should fall for HJ when there is such a carrying boy for her that ALWAYS comes to rescue her.

No, you are definitely not the only one. JH is such a sweetheart, he respects her so much and he does the nicest things for her without any expectations. The only "romantic" thing HJ has done was pull her from the traffic which is so cliche and something that many people would do to a complete stranger. I half-expected there to be a joke to ruin the moment when that happened since this show has played with other drama cliches. I like HJ and WS as a bickering comedic duo, but I'm not feeling romantic chemistry between them. I also really do want HJ and BH to be Ji-hoon's biological parents, because I just love the set-up and there's so much potential with the father-son relationship. I'm really anxious about how the show is going to sort all this out, the time traveling complicates everything so much. I'm trying not to focus on the romance too much, since it's mostly a comedy, but it's just so hard when JH is so damn swoony with his crush on WS and yet show seems to be setting up WS and HJ which is just weird to me for so many reasons.

I ship HJ and WS as a comedic duo but as for WS - maybe she can get with JH after she passes the exam. Or maybe with no one at all. She doesn't seem like the romantic relationship type. And I'm sure her mom pretty much abandoning her every time she gets a new guy did number on our WS.

Unfortunately for me, I don't think it will happen. My guess is that she will end up with Ji Hoon, and I am also ok with this pairing, the boy is sweet and clearly likes her...however, I like more the spark that she has with Hyung Jae.

This show makes me so happy! Ahhh, I can't wait to see what happens now that Kwang-jae knows. This is going to be SO great. Time to get some answers! I'm surprised to find myself this excited already for all the different confrontations Hyun-jae is going to have to have to resolve his past issues and discover why this is happening to him. It's already starting to get so fun with Hyun-jae confronting MJ about the stolen song. He's about to shake up everyone's lives in a very big way, hehehe!
"Stop going back and forth like a bat!" Hahaha, Ji-hoon was so funny in this scene, as he kept switching to different sides with every argument they uttered. They all play off each other so well. Such a great cast chemistry!
At first, I didn't think Hyun-jae needed a loveline and I would have rather had Ji-hoon win Woo-seung's affections in the end, but this is starting to change the more I see how much fun the shenanigans are between HJ and WS. And seeing as Ji-hoon now has Hye-mi interested in him I'm less concerned about his broken heart than I would have been. Luckily, I'm not here for the romance at all though and I'm pretty sure I'll love how these relationships unfold no matter what.
Surprisingly, though, I'm finding myself shipping Bo-Hee and Kwang-jae more than any other possible pairing so far. I'm pretty invested in them getting together for real towards the end (because it's become pretty clear that they haven't had a romantic relationship all these years). I found their scenes really sweet this episode.
I feel like I could spend hours just discussing all the things that make me laugh in this show. That commercial! That ridiculous fight! Hahaha, that belt. Everything is just too good.

Mee too. With it's liberal and tightly woven use of cameos, meta, etc it's stylistically starting to remind me of You From Another Star. YFAS used meta and gags to make some good commentary.
When he found his money in the book "In Search of Lost Time" I immediately wondered if they interjected that as a meta element. There are parallels between that book and this show. The book used characters to represent societal archetypes. And also used a device where the trappings of time, societal era, social position and place were stripped away so you could see the timeless real-self of the individual. I wondered if this show is using the book as the narrative template for today's social issues:
WS: Part time workers: The need to have a ridiculous number part time jobs and being paid with snacks instead of money.
HJ: Cell phone sloth: Formerly compulsively productive artist rendered utterly useless by cell phone addiction.
Fandom: The relentlessness of today's stalker fans.
Home life: The need for found family.
BH: How entertainment careers are short lived and easily ruined.

I am okay with WS HJ, but I really like JH with Dok Hye Ri. haha
There is off chart chemistry between JH & Hyeri. It gives me more a meaty young love, they r both struggling and passionate in same thing, they understand each other way more in silent act rather than WS ever showing to JH. Hye Ri admitted n cares for JH talent, where I never seen WS did that anyway. She only screams, overreact, and overtime she met JH, I only hear WS complained complained self wallowing herself talking to mostly herself while JH standing there like non-existed. She even doesn't think about his struggle is a big deal at all (in ep1 she mocks JH to be born silver spoon).
I try to ignore her like a dust for her acting. Sorry. I don't like her acting in Taylor wolgeyu as well. How can someone debuted long time ago having experiences but acting like a debut idol? sorry for her fans its personal opinion

I partly agree, I am starting to hate Woo Sung, she doesn't has to like Ji Hoon, but it honestly feels like she can't care less for him, even I am more sympathetic to my friends who aren't even that close to me as Ji Hoon to Woo Sung.
Like did she ever said thank you to him? She takes him for granted and not only him, she wasn't sorry about nearly losing Mc Drill's car (and I doubt poor guy had anything else), told Hae Joon to do good work when he helped her in supermarket (he isn't you servent girl!), even the part where she has written Ji Hoon as a minion said a lot about how she sees him.
I know she has hard time and all (who doesn't in this show....), but in real life I doubt anyone would agree on this type of one sided friendship

I don't expect WS to be fall for JH bcs I understand her, fall for a guy is the last thing she needs to juggle right now.
But at least show him a gratitude for a friendship. I wouldn't want to be with a friend &roommate like her.
She forget to tell him HJ pick her n doesnt need to come with taxi fare. I will be max mad if its me ?.
I hate her more when WS said " why I'm trapped in this hell room with 3 of them" .. like sorry? U make it sounds 3 of boys are riding ur room when in fact, is JH's nice act to let u stay at his room not strained on the street. So u need to make a peaceful act to ur savior's friends. I know its for funny antics, but it's way rude assuming she did these stuff all the way from ep1.
She is never even half thankful & grateful & sorry after making trouble to MC Drill's car & all JH's nice acts for her. No consideration, nothing.

Well, I have seen WS to be nice and caring to JH, like when she tried to cheer him up after he failed to enter the group. The fact that she forgot about JH waiting for her is understandable given the situation she went through, and it is just when she arrived home that she remembered JH.
Their relationship is normal to me. In fact I dislike the thought that just because JH likes her, she owes him anything extra. Maybe she does not like him (yet?) and she doesn't notice his special attentions, she is not to blame for this.

Hyun Jae's doodle in the notebook is evidence that he goes back to his own time. How else would his doodle suddenly appear in the notebook Young Jae has? It's because he took it after Hyun Jae finished writing his song.

I'm so happy about that Freedom chocolate bar commercial. Hyun Jae is truly a character. I lose interest slightly when he isn't onscreen LOL
Still can't wrap my head around the way time travel works here regarding Hyun Jae's notebook. So now there are two physical copies of it in one timeline, while one is aligned with the current timeline and the other is in the past timeline like Hyun Jae (thus being empty)? And they're connected? Can Hyun Jae's actions in 2017 affect his life in 1993? Was Young Jae driven by jealousy and behind his disappearance? What happens now that Gwang Jae and Hyun Jae have met?? Is it okay for Hyun Jae and Woo Seung to be a couple (LOL but it is confusing)?? Ah one more week!!

I loved the part where they pointed out the drastic language changes over generations. Whether it's Hangeul or Bengali they've changed a lot since the 90s to make them sound like different languages.

Nice to see you here @pakalanapikake. And thanks for the link to "Ijen Annyeong" I have no idea what they're saying except Annyeong, and you like, I wish I knew Korean just for this! If The Best Hit pulls out a song like this I think a few of us will be a puddle of tears.

I can't help but love this drama. I don't know it's cracky but in a way that I find funny and no frustrating. Seriously I'm glad for that little 'preview?' at the end. Or I think it's a preview? Saw CTH with a sleigh and then going SUCCESS! xD

YSY is slaying as Hyun Jae. That store fight and walking out of the store with MJ's head was so funny. As expected from lobster PD (Director Yoo), the sound effects in the store fight scene was amazing...lol.
Jong Min ah must have been so happy the actress touched his face or maybe he felt nothing like Han Hyo Joo's episode...lol. Still waiting for JJY and Joo-hyuk to cameo. Did you guys watch the music bank special performance by J2 (on youtube)? I knew YSY could sing but his dancing was so good as well. The 90's really fit YSY for some reason, and am loving all his cellphone antics.

you can also watch the prologue or ep 0. ysy struggling to learn the moves and he said he's so confused: when he sings, he forgets the dance, when he focuses on the dance he forgets the lyrics. hahaha

I don't know if I can really enjoy or feel chemistry between HJ and WS when we were told that he's Jihoon's dad. It feels like he's cheating on somebody like that.

I wasn't expecting to love this show, but I do, quite a lot! I love that there's a mix of mystery and comedy going on here, the cameos are fun, and the characters are adorable in their own ways.
While I generally love all the characters here, I'm having mixed feelings about Hyun-jae's shady past with stealing the record company's money. His past deeds are the one affecting the people in the present, I feel bad that Gwang-jae are straddled with debt, while Bo-hee had to humiliate herself in order to keep hold of the building. I'm hoping there's a good explanation as to why Hyun-jae would steal the money in the first place and why he would try to leave J2 and the company that raised him.
On another note, I'm also not sure about how I feel about Hyun-jae and Woo-seung. The fact that he's Ji-hoon's father makes it all kind of weird for me. Disregarding the fact that he's 20 years her senior, he fathered Ji-hoon with Bo-hee, who has been pining for him for 20 years, and how would that make him and Ji-hoon if he dates the one girl his son likes? Man, the relationship in this drama is kind of messed up. I hope everything unravel nicely because I hate seeing anyone gets hurt here.

I also have mixed feelings regarding HJ's shady money deals. I guess travelling to the future is a chance (from fate?) to fix his ways.
On the other hand, I'm skeptical that HJ is JH's father because
1) it was announced in such an undramatic way very early on. Red herring? If we get a Darth Vader moment of 'I am your father' and 'Actually, no' I will die of laughter.
2) HJ showed no romantic interest in Bo Hee back in 1993.
If they are though, yeah, the relationships are really messed up. I guess we'll have to wait and see!

I'm in love with the drama and how the two young ladies are sort of the cold on the outside, warm and hurt on the inside type. And the guys - Ji Hoon and MC Drill have pretty cute personalities. And Hyun-Jae is just out of this world.
Looking at the screenshots in this recap reminded me of all the funny scenes. my favorite lol moment is the grocery store fight with the soda acting like a machine gun. That was so epic - in a similar vein to the forehead flicking scene.
Yoon Shi Yoon is one of those actors I like well enough but don't find entirely all that handsome outside of dramas. When I see him act, his attractiveness skyrockets.

I am not Korea but would like to know if the names Hyun Jae, Kwang jae and Young Jae are suppose to give some meaning for the show. We know Hyun Jae means "present", what about the latter two names? Do they mean past or something??
May be using Jae as one of the names was a popular 70's thing?

Was wondering about this too, so many Jae! Does it have anything to do with the real father, or is it overthinking..?

I know Young Jae can mean genius or prodigy... if this was intentional, major irony there haha but Kwang Jae really doesn't have a prominent meaning, and other names are pretty common male names, especially Young Jae, so it might be entirely coincidental.

Please, Friday come again soon!! This is my favorite show now. I hope the ratings pick up, for their sakes since it seems to be a big thing for them... Ysy was perfectly cast. Also, Jongmin did have a line, or two! Haha. He claimed in the prologue that he wasn't given a line..

This drama totally 'tta bong'. I'm in for all the crazy n humorous antics. So refreshing with relatable charcters since I'm a 94 liner n totally understand how's the struggle of JH,WS MC Drill. Plus the adults charcters that learned to move on from the past n fight for presents life. It give me feels. The comedic gags that so ridiculous at times but manage to settle in my head cuz the execution r perfect (the timing n sound effct plus bgm). Still lolloling hard at the food fighting part n the flick-head game( those freedom ad...I just can't) But not to forget that there r things n goals to be settled ( the youngsters dreams, HJ currents /past mysterious situations n how GJ/BH try to continue their present life) makes the basic foundation of their characters stories.
I think this is the only drama that I'm having no care at all about romantic relationship cuz every pair existed r shippable. Even HJ n WS have great chemstry despite the weird father- son's crush- son relationshp. Come what may, i will cheer for the final otp. I'm just gonna njoy the crazy dynamic btwn all charcters
That HJ tho, omoo.... If I met a guy like that for real, gonna have the best day for annoyed-but-lolling hard at that fashion n personality (YSY looks hot in that actually). He juz love hmself so much but a little concern about others at times. But he seems have a clear vision n didn't scathed even in his time-travelled situation, even try to find solution in his own. Something to be learned by the young charctrs (n also how to live life)
So my unpopular theories about the beeper n the notebook, probably what hppened whn HJ went missing r still ongoing after he travelled to future, which mybe explained bout the bp. Someone prob try to contact HJ after he went missing. N the notebook with CEO r the same one with current HJ but CEO might stolen it when HJ been assumed dead ( possible crime by the CEO?) So probly HJ is whooped to 2017 to claimed back n settle his mysterious death. So much assume, huhu. But not surprising if he didn't die at all in 94 but just stay in anywhere remote, playing with the smartphone he brought back from future ( if he gonna back to past tho) since this drama is so unpredictable. Anyway, gonna root all the characters for their goals. The Best Hit fighting!!!! Let's hope for good rating.....

Been catching up on this drama lately and I'm really liking it.
Yoon Shi Yoon is rocking his role. He looks so fineeee.
I heard of him from the Mirror of the Witch news and his face was familiar in various news articles, but I haven't seen his acting 'til now. He's really catching my attention.
I love that this show has a ton of funny, quirky moments (all da sound effects!), but also has some sweet, meaningful moments. The mystery around Hyun Jae is also intriguing.
I like seeing all the cameos. I wish I could recognize more people, haha.

I don't understand... why would Drill saying he served in the military make him 2 years older than he says he is? That would only signify if the criteria is that the enlistment be AT the age of 30. There's nothing to stop a guy from enlisting early to get it over with.
