KBS variety drama The Best Hit casts Yoon Shi-yoon, Kim Min-jae

Yoon Shi-yoon (Mirror of the Witch) in a comedy? I’m in! Casting is officially underway for KBS’s new variety drama The Best Hit, the station’s second attempt at the mixed-format drama after 2015’s The Producers. Chief producer Seo Soo-min, who helmed The Producers (at least at the start), is attempting to revive the format and she’s tapped PD Yoo Ho-jin—the variety PD who revived a flagging 1 Night 2 Days in its third season—to direct what will be his first drama. So then naturally, PD Yoo called upon 1N2D member Yoon Shi-yoon to star. Yoon has confirmed, and so has Kim Min-jae (The Lonely Shining Goblin), for the youth comedy set in the music entertainment world.

The 1N2D connection is a little mind-bendy since Cha Tae-hyun played a thinly veiled version of PD Yoo in The Producers, but The Best Hit won’t be about variety PDs this time—it’ll be about idols, so perhaps more like IU’s slice of The Producers. The series will be a comedy about the tumultuous lives of contemporary twentysomethings, where everything from communication, to love, to basic survival is a source of worry. Sitcom writer Lee Young-chul (Potato Star 2013QR3, three seasons of High Kick, Once Upon a Time in Saengchori) will be penning the script.

Yoon Shi-yoon will play idol star Yoo Hyun-jae, a member of top idol group J2. He burst onto the music scene like a comet and slays fans with his good looks and his dance moves (pfft, I’m already laughing imagining Yoon Shi-yoon with the dance moves), but he continuously creates waves in the industry with his scandals, and has become known as a scandal-maker.

Kim Min-jae has been cast to play Lee Ji-hoon, an ordinary young man preparing to take the civil service exam. But his real dream is to become an idol star, so he secretly spends all of his time and effort on becoming an idol trainee at a late age. I smell rivalry and bromance in the air!

Early descriptions included a father-son relationship with a father who was a top star in the ’90s, but it’s unclear whether that storyline will remain. So far there’s nothing in the character or plot descriptions that sounds any different from a regular drama, but I expect the variety aspect of the format to come out in the execution, as The Producers did with its mockumentary style. I loved that approach and was sad when they scrapped it mid-show, so I’m hoping that this time they’ll stick to their original vision, whatever that may be. PD Yoo has a naturally funny sensibility, so I’m cautiously optimistic about his first crossover project into dramaland.

The Best Hit is aiming for a May broadcast, though nothing has been confirmed regarding the timeslot.

They look so similar in above pic!! I have to double-take to make sure my eyes aren't deceiving me.
Hopefully they'll stick to variety/mockumentary style than love square romcom.

If there's a female lead whose role is an idol, pleaseeeee can you cast JISOO from BLACKPINK who happens to had a cameo on the Producers also
I think that will be lit! Jisoo is so funny in real life. She's good in variety

Yay! I loved the mockumentary style of 'Producers' and I'm so glad they're giving it another shot. Yoon Shi Yoon and Kim Min Jae are both fabulous so this is definitely one I'll be tuning in for!

I found the mockumentary style so boring honestly, couldn't bring myself to warm up to the format, which was so bizarre, considering in the kdrama world. Though the ending still was frustrating, I would like to believe that once upon a time in Saengchori's writer will do better.

It didn't work for me either, which is strange because I quite like more realistic shows.
But I guess there's a limit to the amount of realism I can take - after all, I'm watching TV for entertainment and escape from reality.

It was not even anything like office, people kept comparing the two shows lol. Yeah reality shows are at least not this hard to decipher.

I'm not an expert or anything, but "Producers" was obviously experimental, so there were elements of drama and sitcom, which, if done wrong, can really be confusing. Park Ji-eun has a knack for comedic timing in dramas (not necessarily sitcom-y), and she's paired with first, a variety PD, and then later, a drama PD. It would've been effective if the director and the writer have sitcom or comedy background that's why I have high hopes with the Lee Youngchul-Yu Hojin combo in this variety-drama. I'm a fan of sitcoms (Modern Family, TBBT), and there is a way of writing the sitcom scripts that is diff from drama so you can't just have any drama writers or PD do the mockumentary format.

I'm cautiously optimistic as well. I enjoyed the mockumentary format of The Producers before. It was interesting and refreshing for me. I really like Yoon Shi Yoon and Kim Min Jae as well so I'm also onboard with this casting.

I really liked The Producers because it's different. Odd, and short but it's a refreshing sight compared to the usual drama formulas. But okayyy, I'M IN. Because I'm so proud of Dong-gu for continuously trying out comedy. I'm glad that he really is trying to come out of his shell through unexpected projects such these. And I agree with the dancing part lmao. He can sing, but dancing? pffttt I just hope that whatever the PD and writers are brewing will work. /cross fingers

<3 PD Yoo - Really miss him so much. His "magic" directing touch has saved 1n2d from being cancelled and now it stays at the top.
When he left the show, I felt so sad T.T. Without his directing, 1n2d nowadays do not feel the same like it used to be.

At the same time, I am very happy to see him do what he has dreamt of for very long time.

I am so looking forward to this show.

I am certain there will be a huge list of cameos .

1n2d team will be cameos for sure. Excited!

Awww I love them both!!

Kim Min Jae is actually a REALLY good dancer, I mean ... he featured on one of 1million dance studios videos (1million is a really popular and well known korean dance studio that works with various celebrities)...and he killed the choreo.

I can't WAIT!!

Yoo PD is amazing, period. I hope we get a cameo from him, it's been ages since I saw him onscreen.

He's following Reply PD's descend into Kdramaland, but if this casting works out, then he might not need the 'I can make anyone act' skill that Reply PD is so widely known for. Would still be amazing if he managed that feat though.

Yoo PD, fighting!

How amazing would that be? But I doubt this can happen considering she's scheduled to be in another drama.

And a drama about idols but no idol casted yet, I'm thinking it would be the female lead. I doubt SM would miss such opportunity.

I like Yoon Shi Yoon more when he plays angsty instead of Enrique-y because he has such gorgeous, expressive eyes and I am forever grateful when PD of MOTW did lots of close up shots of this.

Oh yes I forgot she will be in Lookout.

Since this drama will be about idols, probably like you said the female lead will be from idol. I dont know who it will be. I will be glad if they can get IU again. But maybe no, I heard IU is preparing for her album comeback.

Lol! Never give up on wanting your fave to be in every drama! That's me with Kim Go-eun. :) Haha. Are you watching her in the short, 3 episode drama, Queen of the Ring? It's the third installment in the Three Color Fantasy series. Vivid Romance was the second one in the series.

Haha the thing is I have so many favourites with 'Kim surname' - Kim So Eun, KIm Seul Gi etc. Kim Go Eun is also one of them lol.

I watched a bit of epi 1. Not really like the idea of 'ugly girl' turn to be pretty in the eyes of the guy she likes because of the ring. I will wait for entire three episodes to watch it.

Yeah, I'm not too excited over the premise, either. I don't like the whole Shallow Hal setup, but of course, he'll probably fall for the real her without the ring and she won't even know it... right? Haha. It's a fun watch though--I think it's 'cause it's Kim Seul-gi. ;) She's always a hoot to watch.

Is there any way Lee Yeol Eum can be a part of this drama? I swear her chemistry with Kim Min Jae in TVN's Candy in your ear show was totally off the roof. A minute into the show and I just felt like they were destined for each other. Are they dating off set? OMG I wish they are! Dramagods a drama for them please! Please! Pretty lease!
