[Staff Spotlight] Get to know murasakimi

What is the first drama that you watched (or the first drama that made an impression)?

Sunflower (1998).

Tell us about a job or two that you’ve had in the past.

Before there were unicorns, mermaids, and Pokemon Go, I made a mean cappuccino.

Have you ever lived a moment that you thought belonged in a drama?

One time I cracked open an egg and found another whole egg inside.

What drama genres do you especially like?

I’m partial to fantasy(/fusion) dramas and slice of life. I like seeing the way characters and people live especially what rituals and customs they have with loved ones or alone. I also like to know what a gumiho does on Saturdays.

What drama genres do you especially dislike?

Horror/gore.

Is there a drama character you’ve ever strongly identified with, and why?

Beom from Jealousy Incarnate.

What drama character would you want to be?

Ra Mi-ran from Reply 1988, without the perm, but all the swagger.

What’s a random skill you have?

I have the ability to walk by someone I know, look them directly in the eyes, and not recognize them until ten minutes later.

Favorite non-Korean movie and/or TV show?

I could do a PhD on Ghibli.

Which Hallyu celebrity would you actually want to meet and spend an hour with?

Kkoong from Three Meals a Day. Yoon Kyun-sang can come too, but only so Kkoong feels comfortable, and if he brings Mong or Lee Jong-seok. You know, whichever.

Lol at your egg drama moment.

Looks like all of us here have the same skill -- I always tell my students not to be offended if I see them out in the real world and don't recognize them.

I can see why you can relate to Beom from Jealousy Incarnate. He hardly said a few words in the drama too :D And your skill is so similar to mine. I can look a person in the eye and carry on a conversation and later wonder what their name was. I am so bad with names!

I have this *saaaaame* problem. I work in a library and people come in every day and they want to pick right up on a conversation---like a good, in depth conversation--that we had the day before and they are all, "yeah, isa, blah blah blah" while I'm trying to subtly look them up in the computer to figure out their name. Its the absolute worse when we've been at the desk chatting for 15 minutes and they've called me by name half a dozen times and I'm all---hey, whats your name again? And they are INSULTED deep in their soul. I try to pull off, the your LAST name, girl you know I know who you are! But I do it so frequently I'm pretty sure they've all cottoned on to the fact that NO. I don't.

Same here. I can't remember the face until I meet that person many times. Hence meeting a group of new people is very challenging.

Back then when I first enrolled into college, I have three new friends who look almost the same, almost the same name (with only 1 consonant difference) and same height. What's even worse was that that two of them were roommates. Suffice to say, it took me almost a month to learn to differentiate them and address them with their name correctly.

There was this one time when someone came up to me when I was at a mall. She chatted with me like old friends for almost 10 minutes. All the while I had been racking my brain to find out who she was> I even resorted to asking questions that might give me hints on her identity. Even after 13 years, I still do not know who she is.

My brain also fail to link minor changes in people's face to their old image as stored in my brain. One time, I met with a good fried of mine which I had not met for a mere 6 months. Embarrassingly, I did not recognize her until several minutes into the conversation. To make matters worse, she noticed that I did not recognize her at first *facepalm*

Exactly. It's so bad to the point that I always call people by the wrong names and they have stopped correcting me and respond to whatever I call them. And even when I realize I have been making a mistake I again mix up the names in the head in my attempt to correct them and get it wrong anyways.

"I have the ability to walk by someone I know, look them directly in the eyes, and not recognize them until ten minutes later." Solidarity, Sister! You sound like you have MY condition (sort of.) Face blindness. (I remember having big discussions about this on Javabeans in the "Girl Who Sees Smells" threads. I hardly ever see my (can I call it a debility? It's normal to me) mentioned anywhere. I forget what my husband and kids look like until I see them in person. I was once in a scary situation at college where we'd all accept rides from other students at the bottom of a one mile hill from campus. The person who "gave me a ride" threatened to drive me off to a canyon and (use your imagination.) Luckily, I (who can never lie effectively) lied and told him I had a doctor's appointment and the health center would call my roommates if I didn't show up on time and there would be people looking for me in minutes. It worked, and he let me off. BUT (and here's the sad part of my story) I never reported him. I felt so guilty that maybe some girl had been abducted who didn't have a dr.'s appointment. But I couldn't go to the police and say, "someone threatened me, but I can't remember what he looked like, except he was male." (I do remember voices exceptionally well, though.) At the time, I didn't realize I had face blindness. I just thought I was odd. ANYHOW, long comment, sorry. I like your avatar, murasakimi. (And I hear the little clicking sounds when I see it.)

I admit I am bad with names but not to that level that I would not recognize them at first glance. I would say Hi but not call them by name since I'd be embarassed. Then I would walk by them really fast. ???

Hello fellow skill set sharer... I happen to do that very often, some patients I see regularly are offended because I don't recognize them when they say hello out on the streets >_<'. One time I saw a person that went to my same college and took courses with me and worked together with me for three years and then when he called out to me in a different country about a year later and started talking to me I didn't realize who he was until we'd said goodbye. I always felt that Beom’s character should be more developed in Jealousy Incarnate. There is a real dark undertone in his seemingly innocent façade. He cons ice cream and peddles mediocre art with such ease to the unsuspecting neighborhood ajusshi and adjumma. Is he jealous of love, money, or power?

I loved The Tale of Genji too! (even if Xavier Roca-Ferrer's translation in Spanish is horrible since he considered it a Soap Opera, and that he delivered), any recommendations on the same vein?.

I enjoyed Sir Arthur Waley's take on Jouney to the West by Wu Cheng'en, Monkey.

Hope to read you soon!.

If you're interested in something novelized, then check out Tale of Murasaki by Dalby if you haven't already. In terms of English translations, I am partial to Seidensticker's because it's the first one I read, but I think Tyler's is better overall. Reading it in Spanish sounds really interesting!

Required fields are marked *

Believe me: it's not.

We only have two complete translations and those are based on Europeans translations: the one by Xavier Roca-Ferrer is said to ba a mishmash of Seindesticker, Waley, the french one and the German one. And worse than that, he doesn't respect the material. He only saw a Soap Opera, and that he delivered. He goes from crass “the Lady of Usutsemi (Cicada's Caparace if I remembrer well???) was giving him [Genji] the slip" to utterly petulant "Genji received [someone, I don't remember] in deshabillé (semi-dressed)".

The other one is a translation from Royall Tyler, the one from Atalanta Editors by Jordi Fiblá, that was wayyyyy better but sadly I had to sell it. It was only the first part so it ended in Lost in Clouds (BTW I LOVED the blank page which spoke volumes of what had hapenned)... but the translation is complete including the Uji chapters.

Yes, I enjoyed the Tale of Murasaki (also in Spanish) since it fleshed Ms. Fujiwara Takako(¿?, her name is still a debate for Scholars) very well, and Liza Dalby is, well, as much as an insider a Westerner can be to that delicate world.

If you have patience for an excellent book, please look for The World of the Shining Prince (am I translating the title properly?) by Ivan Morris. It describes you the world that made The Tale of Genji possible. After you read that and give some time to the Tales of Ise, you discover that Lady Murasaki was truly a genius!.

Some Trivia (I guess you also love this stuff ;) ): do you know that the Japanese likes Waley very much?. Before him (if remember well) the poor Japanese that tried to approach Lady Murasaki's book had to read in the contemporary cursive script and also with all the vagueness of the original 11th century language, then Waley came with his beautiful yet somewat invented translation, and made Lady Murasaki accesible (shall we say addicting?) to Edwardian era readers. It was not the most faithful version, but no one cared ;) .

Hope to read soon from you, I live in Venezuela and it is really hard to share this kind of interests right now when everything has become politics, politics and more politics. Culture seems on standby.

Nice to meet you @murasakimi. Your avatar is from "Princess Mononoke" right? Also since you like Studio Ghibli, I recommend this video, it mostly is about Hayao Miyazaki, it will most likely make you cry. I cried.

Thanks for the link, blueribbon!

The opening quote from the master himself puts his work in an elegant nutshell.

"Creating animation means creating a fictional world. That world soothes the spirit of those who are disheartened and exhausted from dealing with the sharp edges of reality."

Amen and amen!

"Hayao Miyazaki - The Essence of Humanity" is wonderful. Although it is not mentioned specifically, my sense is that kishoutenketsu 4-act structure is one of the "secret ingredients" that makes Miyazaki-san's works so refreshingly unique and emotionally moving -- to this American, at least.

I first heard of Studio Ghibli when watching WELCOME TO DONGMAKGOL. The OST by Joe Hisaishi grabbed my ear, and led me to PRINCESS MONONOKE, which blew me away.

The Studio Ghibli 25th anniversary concert at Budokan was a revelation. Just when I thought the music couldn't be more sublime, soloist Hayashi Masako appeared and proceeded to slay me with "Mononoke Hime." Hearing music like this makes me glad to be living on earth at this time. It is a balm for my spirit that moves me to tears.

The trembling bowstring of a drawn bow
Pounding in the moonlight, your heart
The beauty of a sharpened blade
Thy profile looks very much like that sword point
Lurking in the sadness and anger
The only ones who know your true heart are the forest spirits
Only the spirits, only the spirits...

Lurking in the sadness and anger
The only ones who know your true heart are the forest spirits

Hi murasakimi!

I like that you're short and sharp and still say much.

I've a bad memory for names and faces, and I go around sometimes asking point blank, "Hi, err... what's your name again? ... Where did we meet?" LOL.

And when I meet people out of context for eg, when a client who used to be seen only in official meetings suddenly says hi to me at my neighbourhood store,... it takes me the longest time to figure out how come I know, that I know this person, and yet something is so off about the meeting. Especially when we'd see each other in office wear and here we are now in T-shirts and shorts!

The best eg of not recognizing someone I've been talking to, is seeing my kids' swimming instructor outside. Ooop! couldn't recognize him with his clothes on!!! ? ? ?

Nice meeting you and will keep reading you!

One of my most embarrassing moments happened when I worked in the deli at our local grocery store. A man came up to order a 6 foot sub. I took down his order, then asked for his name. He looked at me like I was an idiot and said, verrrry slowly, "R*** M*******. Your next door neighbor."

When I was in my last year of high school, I was getting nearsighted and couldn't see far away. I was at school when one of my classmates waved at me, I was looking at her direction but couldn't make out who she was and what she was doing so I ignored her and walked to class. After that, I was suddenly known as the snobbish girl and the tag followed me to this day.

Yes, it sucks. But to be fair, I'm a shy girl and barely conversed with them, so that might add up to the confusion. I'm almost always left out in class reunions, not that I mind, but my friends feel bad for me. I think true friends are the people that understand you and embrace you anyway.
