Suspicious Partner: Episodes 11-12

This episode proves that getting the answers you’re looking for doesn’t necessarily solve the mystery, and those same answers can often make the truth even harder to ferret out. Bong-hee finds herself at odds wth Ji-wook as she defends her first murder case, but Ji-wook’s instincts from his many years as a prosecutor are telling him that something isn’t adding up. Their first case together may end up being their last if they can’t find a way to work together.

EPISODE 11 RECAP

When Ji-wook comes home after his and Eun-hyuk’s losing fight against the students, Bong-hee corners him to doctor up his injuries. She watches over him after he falls asleep, enjoying the chance to admire him all she wants.

Some time later, Ji-wook wakes to find that Bong-hee has nodded off, and it’s his turn to settle in for a good long look. When Bong-hee’s head starts to topple off her hand, Ji-wook reaches out reflexively to catch her face in his palm.

He’s mesmerized as Bong-hee nestles her face into his hand and smiles in her sleep. He narrates that this is a beginning, the first step of a circumstance or an emotion.

It’s a sweet moment, but Ji-wook then faces the problem of what to do when his arm starts to get tired. He tries to readjust his position, but at the exact moment that he’s holding Bong-hee’s face in both hands, she wakes up.

Ji-wook drops his hands and tells Bong-hee not to get the wrong idea. She teases him, asking him to clarify what he’s telling her not to do while enjoying his inability to think of a response. When he realizes she’s pulling his leg, he pulls rank, reminding her that he’s her boss. Bong-hee apologizes for her misbehavior, but when Ji-wook heads to his room, she impishly tells him to lock his door or she might accidentally come in, earning herself a withering look. HA.

Ji-wook calls his new employees together for their first official meeting. CEO Byun opens the meeting by asking if they’re going to fire Bong-hee. Chief Bang (though he’s not a section chief anymore, we’ll continue to ceremoniously call him Chief Bang) says that they need a secretary, to which CEO Byun says they already have one in Bong-hee. Uh-oh.

Bong-hee informs him that she’s a licensed attorney, but CEO Byun argues that she should also perform secretarial duties, since her reputation will bring the new firm down. Laughing his awkward laugh, Eun-hyuk says he’ll bring in plenty of profit and requests to be made partner. Ji-wook’s “Don’t push your luck” glare is hysterical.

CEO Byun wants to talk about Ji-wook and Eun-hyuk’s battle wounds, so they tell him about their fight. CEO Byun has to one-up them, saying that he once fought thirty-seven guys all by himself, and when Bong-hee scoffs, he launches into a long, embellished story. Ji-wook finally explodes, screaming for them to get to work.

Later, CEO Byun joins Ji-wook in the kitchen to ask about his relationship with Bong-hee. He’d seen her exiting the guest bedroom and asks if they’re living together, but Ji-wook says he’s just helping her out. CEO Byun doesn’t believe him for one second.

Bong-hee runs into Eun-hyuk outside, where he guesses that she knows what happened between him and Ji-wook. Bong-hee says that she does, having put the clues together.

They sit at a covered table, where Eun-hyuk tells Bong-hee that thanks to her, Ji-wook called him for the first time in years (to take her murder case). He asks her not to hate him too much, and she admits that she can’t stand cheaters.

Eun-hyuk keeps laughing that odd, forced laugh of his, so Bong-hee asks why he’s always so happy and smiling. Eun-hyuk says that he wouldn’t be able to be around Ji-wook if he didn’t laugh, leaving the “or else I would have to cry” part unsaid.

Above them on the balcony, Ji-wook watches them, talking and laughing easily now. Chief Bang joins him, mischievously noting that they seem awfully close and asking if Ji-wook is jealous. Ji-wook denies it a bit too much, wondering what’s wrong with everyone today. He can say he’s not jealous all day long, but after Chief Bang leaves, Ji-wook turns the hose on Eun-hyuk. PWAHAHA.

Bong-hee’s mom shows up for her first day of work at the pizza place, still unaware that her new boss is the massage client she fought with at her old salon. She reflexively curses when she sees Ji-wook’s mother smirking at her, then pretends not to have a clue who she is.

Ji-wook’s mom mocks Bong-hee’s mom, then informs her that she’s out for revenge. Bong-hee’s mom nearly quits on the spot, but she remembers that she needs this job and sucks it up with the thinnest veneer of dignity. They trade barbs, neither willing to back down.

A flashback shows Chan-ho holding a large knife as he stands over the murdered celebrity chef’s bloody corpse. We hear Bong-hee asking him why someone would murder another person, and Chan-ho’s answer that each killer has their own reasons.

At the house, Chan-ho picks up a television remote and turns on the TV, then sits down comfortably. As he watches the TV, he mutters to himself, “A woman’s revenge. A reasonable punishment.”

Later, a woman comes home and finds the body, and she lets out a bloodcurdling scream. She starts to call the police, but something makes her stop. She grabs the TV remote that Chan-ho handled to turn off the television.

She realizes that a life-sized photo of the chef has been written on in his blood, referencing the Bible passage Deuteronomy 22:25. The woman frantically tries to clean the blood away as Chan-ho’s voice reads the passage for us: “But if a man meets a girl pledged to be married and rapes her, then only the man who has done this shall die.”

Unable to clean off the blood, the woman decides to make the murder look like a robbery. She begins to ransack the room, then looks for something expensive to hide.

Soon after, a young man named Jung Hyun-soo is arrested for the chef’s murder. Yoo-jung is assigned to prosecute him, and she asks if it’s true that he’s claiming innocence. She tells him that a witness saw him at the house on the day of the murder, recognizing him because of his frequent visits there as a courier.

She goes over the evidence, all of which points to Hyun-soo. Hyun-soo stays silent throughout all of this, and when she’s finished, all he says is that she wouldn’t believe him no matter what he said. Looking lost and frustrated, he asks softly if there’s anyone who will believe him.

Bong-hee visits her mother at work, where they vent about their annoying coworkers, CEO Byun and Ji-wook’s mom. Ji-wook’s mom overhears them and stops to make nasty comments about Bong-hee, still angry that Bong-hee’s mom once inadvertently insulted her son.

Fighting back, Bong-hee cites cases about workplace harassment, until she gets a call from Ji-wook. She irritates him by pretending it’s a very important work call and even talks down to him so that she looks good in front of her mother’s snarky boss.

She hurries back to work, where she learns that Hyun-soo has requested her as his defense lawyer. It dawns on her that it’s because she escaped murder charges herself, which doesn’t make her happy, but the others argue that a high-profile case like this will help their new firm.

Later, Bong-hee asks Ji-wook if she has to visit Hyun-soo by herself, hoping that he’ll offer to go with her. He haughtily informs her that he started his own firm so that others could do all the work, so Eun-hyuk cheerfully volunteers to go with Bong-hee.

Cut to: Bong-hee and Ji-wook on the way to the courthouse. HAHA. They run into one of Ji-wook’s old colleagues on the way in, so Bong-hee goes inside alone, only to find herself facing Yoo-jung. Yoo-jung asks if Bong-hee and Ji-wook are really dating, asserting that she has the right to know. Bong-hee grins, noting that Yoo-jung always says that when she’s at a disadvantage.

Ji-hae spies on them from around the corner as both ladies admit that they liked each other when they met, and that they’re both annoyed that the other is involved with Ji-wook. Intent on an answer, Yoo-jung asks again if Bong-hee is dating Ji-wook. Tossing her head, Bong-hee says that she is, but her eyes slide to the side and give away her lie. Yoo-jung smirks, saying, “With me around, Ji-wook…”

But Ji-wook arrives to interrupt and say that yes, she’s around, but he chose Bong-hee. He even puts an arm around Bong-hee, which is so awkward that it’s actually hard to watch, then he leads her to safety.

As soon as they’re alone, Ji-wook notices that Bong-hee isn’t breathing. He fusses at her, which makes Bong-hee pout that he’s giving her a hard time for acting like his girlfriend. Ji-wook just mumbles that he can’t let his employee be thought of as a liar. Suuure.

They finally get a chance to talk with Hyun-soo, and Bong-hee asks him why he chose her instead of a more successful lawyer. She warns him that he’d better not be expecting tips regarding lack of evidence, and Hyun-soo barks this odd little laugh. But then his lip quivers as he says, “I killed him.”

Bong-hee and Ji-wook stare, but Hyun-soo just asks if that’s what they’re expecting to hear. He wants to know if there’s another option besides pleading guilty and going for a plea bargain.

Hyun-soo is very mild and soft-spoken, the last person you’d expect to be a murderer. He tells Bong-hee that he thought she might be his best hope, and his words remind Ji-wook of Bong-hee in jail, saying almost the exact same thing to him.

Hyun-soo tells them that as a courier, he’s been to the chef’s house so many times he’s lost count. He gets upset as he says that he doesn’t understand why the prosecutor considers that evidence of his guilt. He admits that he’s lonely and scared, which tugs at Bong-hee’s heartstrings, since she knows exactly how he feels.

Confused, Yoo-jung goes to Ji-hae to ask her about Bong-hee. She doesn’t think that Bong-hee seems like a murderer, but Ji-hae says that she’s met a lot of murderers and in her opinion, anyone can kill given the right circumstances.

So Ji-hae says that yes, she believes that Bong-hee killed Hee-joon, and she vows to catch her one day. Something Ji-hae says gives Yoo-jung an idea “for an excuse,” but she doesn’t explain what she means.

Hyun-soo is asked to describe his activities on the day of the murder. He says that he went to the park, then decided to see a movie but changed his mind when the showtimes didn’t work for him. He had ddukbokki and coffee from a street cart for lunch, then went to a bar he frequents, adding that there was a birthday party going on while he was there.

Though Hyun-soo seems very sweet and gentle, something about the way Ji-wook studies him makes me nervous.

EPISODE 12 RECAP

Unfortunately, there’s no evidence to back up Hyun-soo’s story, but Bong-hee argues that there was no evidence proving her innocence either, because of the blackout. Ji-wook warns her against over-sympathizing with the defendant, grumbling that this is why he hates defense lawyers.

Upset, Bong-hee asks why he became one, and Ji-wook snaps, “Because of you!” They freeze for a moment, feeling uncomfortable, then Ji-wook says again that she can’t empathize with all murderers. They pick up their fight right where they left off, with Bong-hee saying that she only empathizes with people who are wrongly accused and Ji-wook firing back that there’s no evidence that Hyun-soo is wrongly accused.

They circle right back around to Ji-wook hating attorneys, then he yells at Bong-hee for making him repeat himself. Their bickering is the best.

That evening, Yoo-jung ambushes Eun-hyuk, practically in tears over the way he and Ji-wook are ignoring her. He doesn’t speak as she says that she knows they hate her, but that he was just as wrong as she was. When she finally talks herself out, Eun-hyuk gently says that she should go now, then walks away.

Hee-joon’s father, District Attorney Jang, visits a cake shop since today would have been Hee-joon’s birthday. He spots Bong-hee just outside the shop smiling at her phone, and he follows her until he can corner her in a dark area. He snarls at her for smiling on today of all days, when he’s buying a birthday cake that his son will never eat.

Bong-hee starts to say something, but District Attorney Jang strikes out, grabbing her by the throat. He spits that he should have been someone who didn’t follow the law, because then he could just snap her neck and be done with her.

He squeezes Bong-hee’s throat, cutting off her airway, but he lets go just before he does any permanent damage. He starts to walk away, but Bong-hee gasps after him, “I really didn’t do it,” and he turns around. She says that she can’t make him believe her, but she also can’t admit to something she never did.

District Attorney Jang booms at her, “Prove it! If it’s not you, bring me the real culprit. Until then, you’re the culprit.”

Bong-hee returns to Ji-wook’s house, once again sunny and cheerful, shoving her phone at Ji-wook and crowing that she found Hyun-soo’s alibi. She went to the bar where Hyun-soo claims to have gone on the day of the murder, and on their wall she found a photo of the birthday party he mentioned seeing.

Ji-wook says that it’s not proof that Hyun-soo was there, but Bong-hee is just happy to have reasonable grounds to believe his story. She heads to her room, but something about her demeanor makes Ji-wook concerned enough to follow her.

She’s taken off the scarf she’s wearing to reveal a growing bruise on her throat, which Ji-wook sees immediately. He pulls her hands away from her neck and softly asks what happened, adding that she can trust him when she shakes her head.

For a moment it looks like she’s going to tell him, but Bong-hee just says she doesn’t want to talk about it. Respecting her wishes, Ji-wook just asks if she’ll be okay, then he leaves her alone.

The following morning, the team gets together to discuss Hyun-soo’s case. Ji-wook decides that they need to get rid of the elderly witness who says she saw Hyun-soo leaving the murdered chef’s house. They have Bong-hee walk back and forth wearing a baseball cap, trying to figure out if an older person with weak eyesight could reliably identify someone at that distance.

Ji-wook wonders why the older woman was looking out her window at the neighbor’s house, but Eun-hyuk knows why — loneliness, the desire to connect with other people.

Ji-wook can feel that something is off about this murder, but he can’t quite pin down the problem. Chief Bang wonders why a thief would stab someone so many times, and Ji-wook confirms that the murder weapon still hasn’t been found.

He and Bong-hee visit the victim’s restaurant, but interestingly, none of the employees will speak to them. They have trouble finding their car again in the maze of alleyways, and while they’re searching, they get caught in a sudden downpour.

Ji-wook latches onto Bong-hee’s wrist, and they run through the sunlit rain until they find an underpass to take refuge in. Ji-wook smiles a tiny smile at Bong-hee’s complaints about her wet hair, and they settle in to wait out the shower.

They crouch companionably, letting the rain fall on their outstretched hands and just enjoying the calm moment. Ji-wook watches Bong-hee when she’s not looking, appreciating how pretty and carefree she looks.

On the first day of Hyun-soo’s trial, Ji-wook and Bong-hee run into District Attorney Jang, and Ji-wook notices Bong-hee’s hand move up to her throat. Instantly guessing the truth, Ji-wook takes Bong-hee’s hand to lead her inside, throwing District Attorney Jang a filthy look in the process.

Ji-hae arrives at her office to find Yoo-jung looking pale and weak, but Yoo-jung insists on going to the trial with her, where they formally charge Hyun-soo with murder connected to a robbery. Ji-wook pleads not guilty, but Ji-hae argues that this sort of murder needs no particular motive. Ji-wook counters that it does need proof, and there’s none connecting Hyun-soo to the chef’s murder.

The law states that before someone can be convicted of murder connected with a robbery, the robbery must first be confirmed. But the supposedly stolen items have never been found, nor is Hyun-soo in possession of any unexplained money, so Ji-wook asserts that there was never a robbery to begin with.

He continues that there’s no evidence that Hyun-soo committed the murder either, and there’s something disturbing about the way Hyun-soo stifles a triumphant smile. When Ji-wook sits after making his statement, he sees Yoo-jung staring at him intently, and Bong-hee notices how uncomfortable this makes Ji-wook.

Later, Eun-hyuk arrives in the parking lot just as Ji-wook, Bong-hee, and Yoo-jung are all heading to their cars. He sees that Yoo-jung looks dazed and unsteady and starts to go to her, but he’s beaten by Ji-wook. With both Bong-hee and Eun-hyuk watching, Ji-wook offers Yoo-jung a ride home, sending Bong-hee an apologetic look before driving off.

Eun-hyuk drives Bong-hee home, and on the way she pouts that she sometimes envies girls who get sick. Eun-hyuk starts to laugh his forced laugh, but he drops it mid-chuckle when Bong-hee says he doesn’t have to do that. When he arrives home later, Eun-hyuk is crying.

Ji-wook takes Yoo-jung only as far as her building, then turns to go. She stops him with a hand on his arm and invites him in, but he gently pulls himself free. Yoo-jung says that she loved him too much, so his love never felt like enough and left her thirsty for more. But now she thinks that even if she’s thirsty, it would be worth it to have him back.

Bong-hee spends the evening haunting Ji-wook’s empty house, growing increasingly worried the later it gets. She ends up pacing outside the gate, almost frantic until she finally sees Ji-wook round the corner.

He also relaxes just a tiny bit when he sees her. Bong-hee runs and flings herself into his arms, gasping that she was scared he might not come home. Ji-wook stands stock-still, stunned, as Bong-hee whispers, “I like you.”

His hand comes up as if to return her hug, but at the last second, Ji-wook lets it fall back to his side. In a voice filled with regret, he tells Bong-hee, “Don’t like me.” His voice narrates that not all beginnings lead to something — some things stop as soon as they begin, because the beginnings are so frightening.

COMMENTS

Oof, poor Bong-hee! It’s hard enough to confess your feelings, even when they aren’t exactly a secret, but to be so thoroughly rejected is the most painful thing in the world. I do understand why Ji-wook is scared to open himself up to love, because he’s been so terribly hurt in the past, and he has the right to decide that he doesn’t want to go through that again. It’s a miracle that he acknowledges his feelings at all. But Bong-hee has done nothing to earn his distrust, and it’s too late anyway, since he’s already falling for her. He’s going to regret those words.

He can deny his feelings, but they’re so obvious that everyone can see them, and he can’t help but respond when Bong-hee needs him. I particularly loved when Ji-wook saw the bruises on Bong-hee’s throat and was instantly worried for her, but when she said she didn’t want to talk about it, he actually respected her wishes. He didn’t yell or push her, but he let her know that he was concerned and that he’s there if she changes her mind. I even thought it was sensitive of him to approach her softly and quietly — he probably knew that she’d been attacked, so coming at her with anger or aggression (even if he was feeling it towards her attacker and not her) would only scare her even more. For a guy who doesn’t know much about women, he certainly has great instincts when it comes to dealing with Bong-hee. Mostly it’s just wonderful how much he notices about her, and the way he responds to her unconscious cues without a second thought.

On the flip side of that, my positive first impression of Yoo-jung is taking a decided nosedive now that she’s showing this selfish, manipulative side. Her sense of entitlement to Ji-wook’s feelings is annoying, particularly when he’s made it clear that he wants nothing to do with her. I find her persistence very different from the way Eun-hyuk behaves around Ji-wook. Yoo-jung bailed when she screwed things up, then just reappeared when she decided she wanted Ji-wook back. She even has the nerve to imply that her cheating is his fault for not loving her enough, and if I didn’t already dislike her for hurting him, that right there sealed it.

On the other hand, Eun-hyuk stuck around, accepting Ji-wook’s hatred and anger as his rightful punishment for his betrayal. And Eun-hyuk waited for Ji-wook too call him first, only increasing his pursuit to rekindle their friendship after Ji-wook made the first move. To my mind, Eun-hyuk has consistently been more concerned with Ji-wook’s feelings than his own, taking full responsibility for what he did, while Yoo-jung is all about blaming others and is focused on what she wants. And I don’t believe for a moment that she’s sick, either — something Ji-hae said gave her “an idea for an excuse,” which just sounds like more manipulation to me.

I’m having a lot of mixed feelings about accused murderer Hyun-soo right now, because although he seems perfectly mild and innocent, there’s something about him that sets off every self-preservation siren I possess. I can’t describe what it is about him that makes me think he’s not what he seems — maybe it’s that he’s a bit too perfect? His voice is slightly too gentle and his smile is just a bit too sweet. His alibi for the day of the murder is sprinkled with a few too many tiny details (girls in the park playing with balloons, whipped cream on his coffee, candles on a birthday cake), which seem like an indication that he’s lying.

I have a theory about Hyun-soo that’s pretty wild, but the more I think about it, the more it fits with everything we’ve seen so far. (Stop reading now if you don’t want to know!) It’s obvious that Chan-ho is involved with the murders, both of Hee-joon and of the recently deceased chef. But I don’t think Chan-ho is the actual killer. Promos of the show told us that the killer has amnesia, and Chan-ho seems too sharp to be suffering from any memory loss. Conversely, Hyun-soo appeared way too happy, almost surprised, whenever he recalled a detail from the day of the murder. It’s as if remembering those details isn’t normal for him.

So my theory is that Hyun-soo is the murderer with the memory problems, and that Chan-ho, for whatever mysterious reason, is a sort of “cleaner” who goes behind Hyun-soo, hiding any evidence he may have left behind using his knowledge of forensics. It would explain the keychain that was left in Bong-hee’s office that Chan-ho picked up and that let him into the chef’s home. I think that Hyun-soo may have been the masked man in Bong-hee’s office that night, and that Chan-ho arranged to examine the office so that he could pick up the dropped keychain that he needed to get into the house to arrange the murder scene. The only things that don’t fit are the Bible verse about rapists deserving death, and why the woman who found the body freaked out and tampered with the murder scene. Like I said, it’s a crazy theory, but it’s the best I’ve got right now.

On Ji Wook & Bong Hee: Ahh, I really liked that scene when they were hiding from the rain and he was just staring at her with that look in his eyes. JW's obviously got it bad for BH, and even though I was half-expecting him to reject her at the end, I'd still held onto a tiny bit of hope that he would hug her back. I would like to think the reason why is that he still thinks he's a little hung up on YJ and the affair, and he's afraid to commit to anything in case he can't let the past go, which wouldn't be fair to BH. Or at least, I hope the decent guy in JW thinks that way, because he's shown himself to be very, very sweet.

On Eun Hyuk: Maybe I'm biased, but I sort of empathize with EH. Obviously, it doesn't justify his act, but I can imagine him, all heartbroken, and their trio broken up because he didn't want to be the lightbulb in their relationship. And after, wanting so desperately to repair their friendship that he was willing to fake laughing just so he could continue hanging around JW? It explains why all his laughs sounded so awkward, which makes me feel even worse for him. Especially that scene of him crying! It tore my heart!

On Yoo Jung: Contrastingly (and interestingly), I still don't like YJ. She honestly hasn't had enough airtime for her to grow on me yet. It's naive of her to think that the 3 of them could ever be the same again. I see guilt from EH at least, but from YJ, she seems to want to brazenly waltz back into their lives after running away to the States, and expect them to all be fine again, as though nothing had happened. When she asked EH if he and JW were ganging up on her, and what was wrong about them doing something bad (cheating), I almost snorted at how ridiculous she sounded. You don't get to cheat on your man with his friend, and come back years later expecting them to pretend like you are all still friends, YJ.

Side note: Did anybody else get a little creeped out by all the little small smiles the murder suspect gave? Like BH, I was touched by his words and believed him, but toward the end I couldn't help but feel a little iffy about his little smiles. Maybe that's just the cynic in me talking, because everyone keeps saying forensic guy can't be the killer, which makes me suspect everything now, hah!

"On the other hand, Eun-hyuk stuck around, accepting Ji-wook’s hatred and anger as his rightful punishment for his betrayal. And Eun-hyuk waited for Ji-wook too call him first"

Yes, this! @lollypip I agree 100%! EH stuck around, living with his guilt and accepting his punishment whereas YJ just sort of ran away, and came back expecting JW to forgive her, just because. That's not right at all.

And I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels that Hyunsoo's gentleness and smiles are a little strange. Especially when he was recounting all the things that he did on that day.

Yes! How can you not like EH when he's brave enough to face his mistakes, enduring JW's ignoring him and smiling all the time he is around JW? I am sure behind that cheerful optimistic facade, he is a lonely soul who longs for the love of his only best friend. I feel for him when he sees the ex, and all she can do is rant about JW and his girlfriend. Not a word about how EH is all this while etc. He must have been so hurt.

Yes! He's just pretending to be so cheerful (I'd originally thought his awkward laughs were cute but now that I know the real reason... agh.) and I bet he feels so lonely now. He doesn't seem to have any friends except JW. I think he feels it the most when he goes home to a cold, empty apartment... and then when he shed a tear? Agh, my heart.

JW and EH are basically in the same situation. They isolated themselves, wallow in their misery and long for their lost friendship. Actually EH has it even a bit worse, because he KNOWS it was his fault and he doesn't have anyone on his side. At least JW has a new friend in Bong He who listens to his problems.

8

Yeah, I agree eun hyuk feels lonely. That's why that scene where ji wook and eun hyuk were talking about The crime and ji wook asks why was the witness looking out the window and eun hyuk immediately answered that she must have felt lonely and ji wook gave him that look. I just felt like it must have been a parallelism to their situation.

6

Absolutely. YJ acted in complete selfishness, only coming back when she decided to, with no regards to JW's feelings. EH could have done the same, but instead he decided to do his best to repair the broken friendship. He knows he doesn't deserve forgiveness and he knows JW will probably hate him and feel hurt and betrayal forever, but he's willing to take it all as punishment and do what he can to make up for his wrong-doing. Even though he did something horrible to JW, I can't help but admire his character.
YJ infuriates me since everything she does towards JW and EH are through selfishness. The scene where she said/thought that apparently her excuse was she loved him too much and was thirsty for more??? So let me get this straight- you loved him so much so you cheated on him because you wanted him to love you more??? Logic at it's finest, people. Let me go slam my head into a wall, brb.

Agree with you re. YJ and EH.
YH is just so shameless and... entitled? Thus, she annoys me/
EH on the other hand just looks like a little lost puppy who trailed mud over the 100% leather irreplaceable white couch, and whose best friend won't pat his head anymore, who knows he did wrong, but I can't help feeling for him anyway.

Bunch of other people on streaming site comments noticed the creepy smiles from Hyun Soo. That plus the bible verse, plus the forensics guys and all the subtle lines about why people murder make me very intrigued, but also I just hope they can pull it off... *has been stung too many times* *can you tell*

I love your puppy analogy, because that's what EH is. I mean, obviously whatever he did was wrong, but he clearly regrets, and he's been living with the guilt ever since. I can't even find it in my heart to dislike EH, and I think it was really mature of BH to not treat him any differently just because she knew what he'd done.

I'm so curious about that Bible verse, and why exactly that woman freaked out when she saw it. She obviously felt guilty that something would be found out, so she tried to change it into a robbery. But why? What's going on? I have so many questions!

*Yes I can tell, hah! But so far, so good, fingers crossed for now*

Hehe thank you. He is very puppy-ish. </3
Right? ""I can't even find it in my heart to dislike EH, and I think it was really mature of BH to not treat him any differently just because she knew what he'd done.""<<< yesss she was so wise there. It wasn't her he'd hurt so she didn't judge. So refreshing. Can't wait for the healing to begin, can we have that now please? Sad puppies make me sad!

All the questions, everyone has. People who kill "righteously" because they think they're judge, jury, and executioner are always fascinating and those are the vibes I'm getting here. They're wrong, and demented probably, but fascinating.

(1) I'm incredibly intrigued by the fact that the woman tries to erase the verse without looking it up to see what it says. Should we assume, then, that she knows what the verse means/says? But that's a weird thing to know offhand, right? Maybe she knows the murderer? Did he warn her somehow/use the verse; maybe when she sees the verse, she knows exactly what's happened. (2) Regarding her tampering: Is she trying to cover for herself or for someone else? Did the victim rape someone, and she's trying to cover it up for him (that seems unlikely)? Does she have a relationship with the victim that would make HER look guilty of the murder? Is she his wife or girlfriend? His rape victim? If there is cheating involved, is she afraid of looking like she killed him out of jealousy/anger? Or is she trying to protect the murderer? What relationship would they have? Does she know he has amnesia and is trying to cover for him? Just some thoughts.

My theory about the bible verse: I think that the chef did exactly as the verse stated. That he raped a woman who was betrothed. I think he (the murderer whoever he is) thinks he's someone who can takes matters into his own hands. He may have murdered Bong-hee's ex bf because he may have done something similar? Who knows how many other girls he may have dated?

So get this...when YH basically blame her own cheating b/c she doesn't feel she's loved enough? I've been told from a girl whose boyfriend cheated on her and said, "I know this sounds weird...but I did that because I love you too much." PUAHAHAHAHAH! Just like YH, just that YH put it in better wording. What a load of bulls***.

Forensics Guy is the brains of the operation, and Hyun-soo is just a pawn? Huh. Now I want more about that AND a LOT, LOT more on Ji-wook and Eun-hyuk right after the infidelity years ago. When is the next episode set to air? I need more now!

I think there is no saving for YJ in my book. What she said to JW about how she loved him way more than what she is got from him hence the cheating is a load of bull. It takes two to tango, but EH is showing much much more genuine sincerity in how he truly feels that he wronged his best friend and that he is trying his damnest to make amends even if Jw remains cold. YJ, on the other hand, nothing. Just full of sense of entitlement to JW and have absolute no respect for his feelings then and even now.

I was really offended when she complained about EH not picking up her call and asking if he and JW were ganging up on her. Not sure if her characterization is deliberate or just weak writing, but she has zero understanding of the enormity of her actions. She not only cheated on JW as a romantic partner, but she trampled on her lifelong friendship with JW as well and trampled both JW and EH's friendship as well. And by running away and letting EH take the fallout, she trampled on that friendship too. Now she's acting like she's the victim or that what she did was the equivalent of dinging JW's car.

Her attitude towards EH seems to imply that she doesn't really care about him, except in the sense that he could be another path to reconnecting with JW.

Exactly! I don't know if it's weak writing or if her character is just that, but you wrote out exactly what I feel - she doesn't seem to understand what her actions resulted in. She just wants things to go her way and doesn't understand that they can't anymore.

She acts completely oblivious to EH's feelings (could she really be, though, given that she'd slept with him?) and sees him probably as a way to get JW to give her the time of day again. Argh. The more I think about it, the less I like her.

Yes me too. Just as Eun Hyuk wasn't fullt fleshed out at first, so is Yoo Jung's. I still get annoyed by her sense of entitlement, but I think that part where she said she always felt that she was the more anxious one in their relationship struck a chord with me. She confessed first and Ji Wook responded, but Ji Wook didn't overly look like the super expressive type. We're thrilled about the amount of attention he pays to Bong Hee, but he did that kind of attention to Yoo Jung as well? If yes, then why didn't he notice that YJ liked him before her confession. He noticed that about Bong Hee though he downplays it. I mean he wasn't exactly surprised when Bong Hee confessed. So if he never noticed YJ's affections prior to her confession, did he love her less? He's clearly the nice type. He loves mankind and fights for their rights. If you were as bratty as YJ, would that have made you feel special in his eyes? My guess was that YJ noticed Eun Hyuk's sincerity and was gravitated to it. She wanted to be loved the way Eun Hyuk loved her ecxept it had to be by Ji Wook. That there is a sure recipe for disaster because there's nothing like loneliness inside a relationship. Cheating is unforgivable of course, but from my perspective, both Eun Hyuk and Yoo Jung were dragged down by their insecurities. Hence the need to fill the loneliness, hence the affair. Sadly, they have to pay the pricr.

1

ar, you echo my thoughts exactly. she used EH as her tool, she destroyed relationships & now she is walking around pouting as if the whole world owes her something.
Your comment about EH taking the blame for both their actions is spot on.

Her selfishness is shocking.

I can't believe I rooted for her when she first met Bong-Hee. I don't wanna judge her right away just like what I did with Gok-Doo's girlfriend on SWDB, but I've been very disappointed so far with her character. I'll blame it on poor writing. It's like the writers are purposely making Yoo-Jung despicable, because you know, EVERY drama needs a girl who'll always be stupid and unnecessarily insensitive just for the sake of a man.

And when she and Ji-Hae was talking about Bong-Hee, and JH talked about the kinds of murderers she had already met so she thinks that BH is capable of killing someone, that got my eyebrows so up my forehead. Because isn't Yoo-Jung the sunbae? So she must have much more experience that Ji-Hae. JH even looks up to her. But she took JH words as if she couldn't make her own judgement about the topic. wut, girl.

OTL, show. What are you doing?

Isn't that because Yoo Jung almost immediately went to pursue master degree after graduation while Ji Hae already became practicing prosecutor for 2 years?

They couldn't be much years apart since they even met in college, so during the rather short time for Yoo Jung to have master degree already, she might have very short experience, if any, as a practitioner before her master study.

Ji Hae might adores Yoo Jung as a student, but while Yoo Jung probably has more knowledge theory wise, but Ji Hae has more experience in real life cases.

Second- I'm scared for EH after that bible verse on the painting... ooooh...
Third- I said this on the open thread, but I just can't hate EH. He knows he did wrong, and it breaks my heart watching him.
Fourth- Ji Wook, love. Telling her not to like you, that won't work. She's had a crush on you for two years, I don't think she's gonna stop now.

Nooo I think the killer might attack Eun Hyuk if he founds out he cheated...
The theme of the two murders so far seem to be infidelity. But is it only men who cheat on their girlfriends/wives, or is does it include EH too? Who didn't cheat on HIS girl, but on his best friends girl. I don't know but I just have a feeling that Deuteronomy 22:25 is gonna be important down the line.

Although either way, if one of them IS in danger, I do think it'd push JW to reconciliation.
Someone/a main c, is gonna almost die at some point. Maybe someones. I can feel it. Calling it now.

Deuteronomy 22:25 was written in blood on a picture in the household of the second kill. The lady sees after she finds her husband, then freaks out and tries to make it seem like a robbery.
The verse is read in voiceover. It states "But if out in the country a man happens to meet a young woman pledged to be married and rapes her, only the man who has done this shall die."

I was thinking that EH may become targeted too. Whether the killer is the crime scene guy or Hyun soo - both of them are in enough proximity to our gang to find out that Eun Hyuk was a part of the infidelity against JW.

aw, even though it was wrong that he slept with his friend gf, I don't want him to be a target. By your logic it makes sense. I looked for that versicule and I don't know if my interpretation is too literal but it's more about rape than cheating. IDK, but anyways, the point is that EH is really upset and sad about what he did and his trying to work his way into getting JW's love and friendship back for real. ugh too much pain involved there.

I think BH's attitude about going upfront to catch that killer may get her in serious danger. And well, JW is no Helaer nor K2, He can't fight though LOL

re. the bible verse. It is just about raping yes, and I don't know how much to look into the context of it (do we go back to the original Hebrew? see if it covered adultery as well?) or what... but I guess we'll just have to wait and see how significant and accurate it is.
On top of that, people who kill for so-called righteous reasons, probably aren't so finicky about bible verses, and most definitely take them the WRONG way haha

I just want to see Bong Hee to kick the killer into oblivion and pull a City Hunter on him aka drop him in front of the police station.

2

This is what I feared also! If this happens and Yoo-jung gets off even though she's the one who had the relationship, it'll just be too cruel to him. Lol, not that I want her to get attacked either. Ugh, please just leave Eun-hyuk alone!

I agree, though, Eun-hyuk being in danger could give us the reconciliation we all want, while Bong Hee being in danger would get him to wake up on his feelings. Definitely going to be happening to someone soon and, for him, it will be a catalyst for growth.

@chandler
I was and still am sure there is a connection between the killer and BH. Or at least I REALLY hope there is.

I agree that my thoughts lie towards Hee Joon's murder not being an accident...but I thought the killer had mistakenly thought he was the witness who'd seen him disposing of the body (instead of Bong Hee/the groper guy from episode 1) and killed him instead.

The scene where she told him that he didn't have to laugh to put up a face around her really touched me bc I could see the potential in their friendship!

Ugh Attorney Jang is so despicable. I am trying to understand it from his point of view and I get that if she was the potential murderer, he would have every right to hate her. It's just so hard to see BH being treated like that when we know she's innocent?

that scene really touched me too. Even though EH acts cheerful and is not ostracized by his colleagues, he does seem really lonely. BH, who has only been in his life very briefly, has shown more care and understanding for him than YJ, who was one of his best friends for over 2 decades. I always thought that EH and BH feel very similar. They both smile in the face of adversity; they do end up being the thorn in their colleagues' sides; and they love getting their petty revenge/snipes. I can totally see them teaming up for shenanigans and JW being dragged along. I think that is probably why JW gravitates towards BH.

I find it interesting that originally, Yoo Jung had said she needed to "forget" the man she slept with, but she was the one who reached out to Eun Hyuk first. But EH is actually the one acting like he's forgotten her for the sake of Ji Wook. It was so sad when they met again for the first time and he clearly still likes her but she continued to only think and ask after JW. EH has definitely become my favorite character at this point. And for someone who started this drama because she LOVES JCW, that's saying something! Actually, here are my favorite characters by ranking:

1. Eun Hyuk

It must have been hard for him to face his ex when he clearly still has feelings for her, and all she does is rant about JW and his possible girlfriend.

4

Required fields are marked *

I'd forgotten that she'd said that! She would need to "forget" him for her to get back together with JW, but I don't think YJ understands how the situation is supposed to work. JW rejects her, and then she finds herself alone and unable to understand why, so she immediately turns to EH to ask him why it's happening even if it's clear that he doesn't want to see her (rejecting her calls and all). She strikes me as selfish, just wanting her relationship back, wanting her friendship with EH back and throwing a tantrum when she realizes she can't.

And you're right, I think EH still likes her and he must have felt so hurt that she stepped right over him and only asked about JW. I love both EH and JW equally.

I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out YJ knew all along that EH is in love with her. If she's been using him all this time, and if she chose EH to sleep with because she's aware of that then my hate for her will be irrevocable. But then, I'd like EH less if he'd known this and still allowed himself to be used. All we know from him is that he's always had feelings for her and gave in that one time. So during that 'one time', were they pretending it was just a casual one night stand?
I wanna know how those two idiots didn't realize sleeping with each other was the worst idea ever.

Still, I like EH. Because one can still be a likeable, relatable person even with a major flaw. I like that he wouldn't give up on JW before they even got to a point where they could confront the elephant in the room, and that he let JW decide if, when, and how. I like that we can tell how much he's actually hurting and regretting, and that it's probably even exhausting for him, but he's not throwing tantrums and crying 'enough punishment is enough' unlike what YJ is doing now. Also, I cry helplessy when EH cries.

Ahhh I'm loving this show more and more. Thank you LollyPip for the recaps!!! ❤️

Yes, EH deserved to be punished AND forgiven because he takes his punishment, is still taking it, like a responsible friend.
YJ is just a selfish brat. She reminds me of Chae Jung-An who had a similar role in Coffee Prince: the selfish cheating girlfriend who comes back and want her man back and even gets mad at him for falling for someone else while she was away. I didn't like her then, I don't like YJ now!

Gosh, I feel like that's the million dollar question in this series. WHY is he killing those people (whoever "he" is)?

I have a theory that his pattern is killing those that cheated on their partners. Perhaps because someone cheated on him in the past, or his father cheated on his mother?
But he kills "only men" like that Bible verse said. It would explain why he killed BH's ex, and that Chef probably cheated as well. (But why would his wife clean up the mess? Is she trying to uphold her reputation?)

Assuming that Hyun-soo is the killer, I'm more curious about his amnesia.
If his motive for killing is related to his past: does he remember it, parts of it or not at all? When he kills people, does he have any memory of that? Is the forensic guy cleaning up after him, precisely because the killer himself doesn't remember his act? If so, WHY would Chan-ho be his accomplice?
Gosh, so many questions.

Required fields are marked *

The forensics guy is probably a close friend who's trying to protect him. They probably grew up together and were best friends, much like JW and ET. He's probably been cleaning up after him from small, because of his friend's amnesiac problems.

The woman cleaned up after the chef's murder because she knows who the killer is. She may have told the killer about the husband's infidelities. She may even have asked the killer to teach the cheater a lesson. She doesn't want to go to prison for being an accomplice.

Ohh, interesting murderer theory. I'm down with it. I've been wondering how the amnesia part would play a role in the murders going forward, and this works.

I also agree re: Yoo-jung and Eun-hyuk. My biggest problem with Yoo-jung in today's episode was that everything she said to Ji-wook about their relationship and breakup was in relation to herself - "I felt lonely," "I loved you too much," etc. Never once did she say anything that indicated she had considered how Ji-wook felt. Her biggest flaw seems to be that she sees everything as it relates to her; she doesn't see how her actions affect others, or, if she does, she doesn't seem to care. Even just bombarding Eun-hyuk was very tone-deaf of her. I know we're not even at the halfway point, so I'm wondering if her arc will include learning some empathy? I don't want to write off her character completely yet, because she has so much potential to be complex and grow. I also want to see her actually acting as a prosecutor more because seeing her go head-to-head with Bong-hee and Ji-wook will be fun.

That she seems reluctant to accept Bong-hee as a murderer is one of her few redeeming qualities at this point.

I'm glad she seemed reluctant to accept BH as a murderer, but it also seemed a bit naive. The hoobae/BH's enemy was right in that anyone can be a murderer and they don't have to look like they're capable of murder. But shouldn't YJ be the more experienced prosecutor? Lady, if you want to know about the trial, go look at the facts of the trial instead of listening to your hoobae. There were two murder weapons and enough evidence to acquit BH.

As someone who works on criminal cases, I can say that just looking at the record of a trial does not help with determining whether a person is guilty or not (often evidence both sides know but can't/don't use is left out, so it's impossible to know what is important and why). I think the more problematic part is that the hoobae/enemy failed to mention that she was the one who cheated with BH's ex, even if YJ knows that she was a cheater. It's manipulative and colors her view of the situation in ways that YJ can't understand. Even just presenting it as a measured "anyone can be a murderer" is still tainted by her dislike of BH and the fact that she has an emotional stake in the claim. If YJ knew this, she may not take her so easily at her word in regard to BH.

6

I am so down with Lollypip's theory too. Nicely put! I think we are in for more interesting points in the murder because this writer is good in this aspect.

I keep loving Bong-hee more and more. I absolutely love that she doesn't take crap from anyone. In this episode, I particularly liked that she wouldn't acknowledge CEO Byun unless he addressed her by her real name.
About the rest of the plot in this episode:
I second LollyPip's thoughts. I was willing to give YJ a chance, but all the positive feelings I might've had towards her went down the drain. She's manipulative, and I also don't believe that she was sick. And I also hate her self-entitlement towards Ji Wook's feelings... she's not only shameless but selfish as well.
And about our supposedly "innocent" murder suspect, I agree that he's too perfect. There's definitely something fishy going on.

Lastly, WAKE UP Ji Wook?! Not only is BH going to be hurt, but JW is also hurting himself in the process. Obviously, his rejection is consistent with his character...but I hope that by rejecting her, he's going to come to the realization that he's already fallen for her. The way he just LOOKS at her tells it all. Like that scene in the rain

When I look at his face in that scene with absolutely no emotions at all, it makes me think that he's feeling many emotions but also trying really hard to repress them. That's not healthy. When Eun Hyuk cried, I couldn't but sympathize with him. We don't know yet, but given their behaviors, I think that in this case it was Yoo Jung who took advantage of Eun Hyuk's love. She felt alone and played with him. The problem was that she really didn't stay with him, as he probably expected. That's when he realized that he risked his friendship for nothing

I also have a feeling that YJ was the instigator to the cheating. She knew of his feelings and used that. She then ran away and left EH to take the fall. To her, he is someone 'expendable' and he now knows that.

I totally have to agree with you on this one. What Eun Hyuk did seems totally out of character for who we know him to be so far.
Yoo Jung taking advantage of EH's feelings seems completely in line with who she's shown herself to be. It broke my heart when we saw those romantic scenes between Ji Wook and Yoo Jung and realize that he was actually in those scenes too.

Being the third wheel is never pleasant especially since they used to be apart of tight knit group. Watching your friends pair off and being the one on the outside looking in especially when you have feelings for one member of the pair....uuggh! I can't even.

She was the one who confessed to Ji-wook first and he kind of just went along with it. She already said she felt she loved him more and was unhappy. My theory is that she somehow learnt that Eun-hyuk was in love with her and it stroked her ego really hard to have someone love her instead of her loving someone. She obviously didn't love Eun-hyuk much if she dumped him just afterwards. Not saying that Ji-wook didn't love her but it's hard to explain. In short, I don't like her at all, and I also sympathize with Eun-hyuk. But I'm not really surprised because that author managed to make me sympathize with a murderer in I Remember You.

I paid attention more. whe YJ confessed she gave the ultimatum: date or never see again? of cource JW would not choose not ever seeing again, so he chose the only other option. it almost seems he was veering on autistic spectrum, taking expressions at face value and not expressing himself boldly. he seemed like the timid and receiving side in the relationship too, which is why YJ might have wished for him to take more initiative. But it was just him going along with the "threat". Not saying he had no affection at all, but I think he still saw YJ as a friend who would leave him if they dont date, not actual girlfriend. at least in the beginning. and the thing that hurt him was not so much the fact of cheating, but that her cheating made choosing the "better" option invalid.

This suddenly got really angsty. At the moment I really can't stand YJ. The way she talked to Bong He and saying, "no way Ji Wook would choose her, when she herself was around". At that moment I really wanted to pull her hair out one by one. How can a person act like that, after what she has done? And her excuse for the cheating: "I always felt that I loved you more so I was never satisfied?!!!" Pleeeeeeeeease girl, that is not an excuse, that is just bull. When you have a problem you talk to your partner and don't cheat with his best friend on him. While I absolutely can't understand her, there is a part of me, that sympathizes with Eun Hyuk. He seemed to really love her and always felt like the third wheel. She took him just for granted and used him. Even now she doesn't give a damn about him and his feelings, and only cares about herself. It just makes me really mad. While he made a huge mistake and brought it on himself, he is actively trying to fix it. I hope Bong He will help him out with that.

I also really wanted to shake Ji Wook. He finally noticed that he started to fall for Bong He, but he is to scarred to act on it. Even when she was confessing. He probably was terrified that he couldn't handle a second break up. I really hope this rejection won't make Bong He give up. She is a really strong person, but she also needs him in her life.

YES, I know, I was thinking, "girl, get off your high horse". Why would your ex boyfriend choose someone else, indeed? Maybe, the fact that you'd cheated on him with his best friend?

I'm glad everyone here is on the same boat about EH! She'd felt unloved by CW (can't imagine why exactly, he seems like a perfectly sweet boyfriend) and so decided to use EH's feelings for her to have an affair... and then asking him what exactly they'd done wrong and throwing a tantrum about how JW didn't want her back? That's not how it works, girl.

I hope BH won't give up! But I also want a confession scene from him.

@LollyPip In regards to... And I don’t believe for a moment that she’s sick, either — something Ji-hae said gave her “an idea for an excuse,” which just sounds like more manipulation to me.

I disagree with that part, I do believe she was sick. What I took from that scene "What you said is helping me come up with an excuse", was YJ justifying her brazen pursuit of JW, even with JW/BH supposedly dating, due to BH potentially being a murderer. I actually think YJ knows she has no leg to stand on if JW was actually dating, so she was looking for a reason to at least try (regardless of how wrong it may be). I guess a cheater compared to a murderer is the lesser of two evils.

Yeah the sickness definitely wasn't faked. I think she might have been sort of flaunting it purposely, but the makeup during those scenes tells me she really was sick. In k-drama super pale lipstick=sick (if you have never noticed this before you will now, trust me it's in every drama). When someone's just pretending they don't bother doing the "sick makeup" as I like to call it.

It breaks my heart that all our leads are broken in some way. No ji wook in his inability to let someone into his heart and to trust them (that last scene :( ). Eun bong hee in her desperation to prove to the world that she is innocent and trying to rise above whatever consequences she deals with everyday because of it ( the DA's horrible attempt murder and ceo byun calling her Miss. Lack of evidence etc). Eun hyuk not being able to be with the woman he likes (especially in the scene where he saw yoo jung after a long time, it felt like he had missed her so much and wanted to talk with her a lot but still told her to go) and losing his best friend too. The scene where he told that his laughing and joking his indeed his coping mechanism (like you told, LollyPip!) And the scene where bong hee told him he need not laugh and the ending where he teared up. Damn, My heart aches for their lost friendship, all the three of them are lonely and struggling to cope up with it. Though I find it more in eun hyuk and ji wook than yoo jung. The part where she told she wanted more love from ji wook, is that why she slept with eun hyuk? To be able to get that love? So, the hurt all three of them are going through are because of her own insecurities?

But, when ji wook could find it in himself to take care of yoo jung when she is not well, why doesn't he cut eun hyuk some slack too? I think that is also the reason why eun hyuk was so hurt, he has been around all this time trying to get ji wook to forgive him but he never once speaks to him kindly or of his own accord. Its like his two friends decided to reconcile leaving him out as the bad guy. I don't even know why I am feeling this sad for a guy who apparently cheated.

But on the lighter side, the banter between bong hee and ceo byun (the scene where she chuckled when the ceo told he had beat up 37 men and he asked "did u just laugh?" And she was like "who? Me!", lol) is fast becoming my favourite thing! :P

And that's a really interesting theory, LollyPip! Even I had a feeling that though we were supposed think of him as an innocent man framed for murder, there was definitely something off about him. He is kind of cool for someone accused of murder which he didn't commit, not desperate the way bong hee was.

I'm pretty sure JW is gonna regret rejecting BH all too soon :( He's fallen for her so I'm just praying that the writer won't prolong the milddang. I can totally understand though that JW is afraid to get hurt and trust anyone again but he'll come around... I'm so hating on YJ now but I'm still waiting for some more back story from her POV. I really liked her at the beginning so I'm expecting she won't be trapped in the bitchy second female lead typecast.

Lastly, can I add that I'm really loving Nam Ji Hyun <3 I haven't watched any of her dramas but gosh I like her character here. And of course, Chang Wookie will always be my bias k-actor. Will miss him after this drama :(

Something is off about Hyun-soo. As lollypip pointed out, his facial expressions are odd considering the situation. I wonder if Hyun-soo is the rapist the verse indicated and being framed for the chef's murder is his punishment from the real killer. The woman may be trying to hide that she was raped or maybe she was having an affair but the killer thought she was being raped?

I'm loving that the cases are just as intriguing as the rest of the story. The case-a-day format can either help or hinder a story, and I think in this series, it is definitely helping.

This episode was wonderful! I really wasn't expecting that ending! You could visibly see Ji-wook's awareness of his feelings growing throughout the episode and each and every time he ran away, so it's no surprise he wasn't ready to accept her.

I have to admit, a part of me wished Bong-hee could have given him a little bit more time to deal after his ex's return. Just for the safety of both their hearts, because, ahhhhh, that ending hurt so much. Not even just for her, but for him, because I feel like he is really going to regret pushing her away right now. I wanted to let him come up with excuses for a little while longer before he was forced to face their feelings. I'm actually surprised by how much I feel for his reasons for hesitating because, lately, I've been pretty over this 'damaged-from-love' thing that happens many times. But maybe because the wounds from his betrayal and loss are so much deeper and have been apparent since we've been introduced to his character. Not to mention, he's a sweetheart.

While I initially thought Bong-hee would hold her feelings in a bit longer while we saw his develop more, I have to admit, this actually seems exactly like how a romance between these two would go. She'll always be willing to be a step ahead of him, even if it means putting her heart on the line before he's ready to accept it. His ex being back in the picture definitely escalated things for her, while having the opposite effect on him.

I'm really hoping that this won't make her distance herself from him too much. They just got the law firm together and I want to see them all continue to work together. I totally expect her to put some emotional distance for her own good though. My only hope is that Ji-wook doesn't decide to do that for her. I would love it even more if she allowed herself to be confident and patient. He can't force her to take back her feelings, just as she can't force him to accept them. So I hope she sticks by them!

The fact is, I think he's going to realize it's too late very very soon. Because you can't just stop the beginning of an emotion like love ;)

BH: "Are you sure you want to fight me on this? Let me remind you of my Taekwondo level."
JW: "Everybody shut up! Get out of my house! Out!"
Everyone: "Sorry, can't. We work here, remember?"

Yes! Can we please turn this raw, painful moment into a more light-hearted one by having her take issue with that "Do not like me." Like, "excuse me, that isn't up to you. I'll like you whether you like me or not." Haha, not in such a forceful way, I'd just like for her to court him a little bit, while still respecting his feelings ;)

I'm hoping she confessed to him with the resolve not to give up her feelings like she's convinced herself to do constantly over the last few episodes. I think she is genuinely beginning to see that he cares for her quite a bit more than even he realizes and I'm so happy to have a heroine confident enough to fight for that.

Instead of shrinking away, I would love to see her continuing to give her love freely, without putting pressure on him to return it or to trust in it until he's ready.

That would be a great move. It also would be funny if after her confession, BH denies the confession ever happened, just like how she had initially denied knowing him when she first entered his office as a trainee.

You know, I thought bong hee would be slightly angry at ji wook for leaving her like that and going with yoo jung. But, then when he came back, she actually confessed her feelings and then I realized, ofcourse, that's what bong hee is going to do, she basically has heart in her eyes whenever ji wook does anything for her. Its pretty adorable. But, I really hope ji wook doesn't put too much distance between them because of her confession.

I loved how grief (or the lack of it) and loss played a huge part in this episode, especially in regards to the supporting characters—from EH's despair at ruining a friendship (and attempting to repair it) to the crazy father who tbh...needs to find other alternatives to dealing with his grief than almost choking a person. On the father: he told BH to prove that she's not the murderer but I almost wonder if he'll even believe her when she does? He doesn't seem prone to rational thought.

Even if she proves she didn't stab his son to death, he'll probably blame her for something else, tangentially related to the murder. i.e. "if you haven't asked him to pick up his stuff, he wouldn't be in your apt getting stabbed" or "if you hadn't dated him, he wouldn't be in your apt getting stabbed"

I also was weirded out by our murder suspect!!! My hours of watching crime shows tells me that recalling every detail of a day you didn't kill someone is not a good sign. But what weirded me out the most was when BongHee was with the suspect and got a call from JiWook, and the suspect suddenly stopped smiling.... so weird.

I have to say, this episode was not the best one yet especially being full of drama tropes that I loved at first (ie jealous JiWook, denial of liking BongHee to Mr. Bang and Mr. President guy) then… that last scene happened. When JiWook raised his hand up while BongHee hugged him, I literally shouted at my screen “Don’t put it DOWN!!” but alas, drama tropes never fail me…

Ah..... loved many moments in this episode.... JW not letting EH and BH get close is hilarious. But I am loving it that EH-BH are forming some kind of bond. Also JW realising his feelings for BH slowly.

I liked that they've upped the mystery ante of the show. I agree with Lollypip that Hyun soo seems to be the killer..... his build even matches with the man with earphones and CSI guy is just an accomplice. But that they have actual motive behind the murders and seem to be killing the "cheaters" is what making it more interesting.

But of all the lovely moments came crashing down with the ending. My heart broke for BH. She has had the toughest luck of the lot by far and still she has been the brightest character ever. I am just hoping this won't break her spirit. Also, eagerly waiting to see how they're going to take JW-BH interactions from here.
So far BH has always tried to save her pride and tried to distance herself from JW knowing he doesn't like her that way. But it has been JW who brings her back into his life again and again. So after his direct rejection, I wonder what BH will do.
Stay strong Bong-Heeya..... I am with you....

I LOVE how he just backed off immediately. I feel like we rarely see those scenes play out like this in dramas. The way this couple interacts, honestly, they're just goals!

I love how he gave her space and doesn't try to make her feel embarrassed or burdened with his concern. He knows that the best way to get revenge is to prove her innocence.

no wonder I am so hooked on these characters. that writer just has skill to make you hurt for the sake of everyone. I Remember You also had a great team build-up and gave each member their specific quirks. and had someone close to the team who they trusted turn out to be a killer. and JW & EH were practically like brothers before one turned into a different kind of "monster" in the eyes of the other. Many things follow the same pattern, but it still feels fresh and addicting. I don´t think I´ll watch this 37 times tho. (yup. I am at 37 with IRY. Beat that obsession.)

Remember that you shower EH because he was so chummy with BH? Remember that you gives BH a freaking room in your house, remember you being totally protective on everything about BH??
I guess YJ and EH betrayal was so deep that you are that afraid to strat new relationship. Alas, you are not willing to be friend to BH at first and now look where you both are. I bet you wouldn't able to resist BH "bulldozing" charm.

I really need the three friends being friends again. They look so happy growing up. I really looking forward for all three of them team up and add our sunshine BH to the team. Its gonna be a kickass team of lawyer.

Still not really hating YJ. Hate her because she cheated on JW but she's not Eeevil. Even the confrontation with BH is funny (it just me?).

Why must the killer be so damn handsome? And I still waiting for the amnesic part of the killing. Was he kill for fun? Does he paid for killing? Why is he killing peoplee?? I need to know. Ok still early but I couldn't waitt!

ThankYou LollyPip for the recap.... I enjoyed your theory about hyunsoo and thinking about it makes me think it may be true..... If it is, them I am the happiest girl in this page... We get to see DongHa more... Loved him in Chief Kim.....

And that scene when JiWook checked her bruise was brilliantly made.... His soft and gentle handling of the situation was so good in many levels.... I loved it when he asked" It's okay.. Tell Me" I actually thought she would tell him the truth... But thinking about that she made the right choice... She knows JiWook is sensitive if it comes to her and he has lost a lot of things because of her murder case and she didn't want to put him in more trouble!!!

And the last scene, I understand JiWook is hesitating because he doesn't wanna get hurt.... But before that he should know better that she was cheated on by her boyfriend herself and she hates cheating the most... If he could trust one person in the world on not cheating, it should be someone who was cheated on.. and that is our Girl BongHee right there... She knows the pain.... I am sad that he would do that to her... ?
BongHee's love for JiWook is so heartwarming and its lovely to watch the girl go head over heels for our guy....

And lastly... Still I can't understand why EunHyuk did what he did... His explanation is so unacceptable that no one would wanna forgive such a guy... If he were a college friend or someone not that close, it would be been acceptable, but a childhood friend!!!! No way... I am sorry I am not buying that reason....And I couldn't understand why he was crying when JiWook drove YooJung home......

JW may still have feelings for YJ. If he still has even the littlest bit of feeling for YJ, then it may not be fair to BH for him to start a relationship with her. But I was really sad for BH when JW told her not to like him. She really wears her heart on her sleeve.

I think EH cried because it was the first time all three were in the same space since the affair and they were no longer friends. He's probably still in love with YJ and struggles with it.

It's JW that got hurt the more and still couldn't let his friends go...

So I definitely think I was right about Hyun-soo not being innocent, although, I admit, I was kind of hoping the show would continue to try and convince me he WAS, before sneaking in apparent little hints from his off-putting behavior. Luckily, I think Dong-ha is acting this so well that I don't care, which is something I wouldn't necessarily say for the other guy (no offense to him, he's doing fine, just Dong-ha is fantastic!). I have to admit, I'm much more intrigued by him being our villain because I just love the possibility that he may have purposefully gotten caught, just so he could be proven innocent by them (well, obviously, I hate it from an in-drama perspective, but I love it from a writing perspective!). I actually got chills before the show even started hinting at him being dubious because his initial words were so eerily similar to Bong-hee's, almost as if he'd heard them himself.

Beyond all this though...I am seriously DYING to know how the amnesia works into everything. Like, can we find out about that now? Because none of these possible killers seem to have the short-term amnesia that was described in the premise yet. So curious.

Like I said, I am in love with No Ji wook's character. He's so full of emotions and show them all, he's sad, bitter, jealous, fear, funny, cute, sweet. I love him. And you can see in his face how he feels or what he's thinking about.

this scene " I particularly loved when Ji-wook saw the bruises on Bong-hee’s throat and was instantly worried for her, but when she said she didn’t want to talk about it, he actually respected her wishes. " I loved it too, He was very gentle with Bong Hee, althought I wished she'd tell him it was so cute from him to respect her and give her some space. I want them to kick Prosecutor's butt with the truth.

Eun Hyunk, I like him and hate him. both. It was a very shady thing to do for him to sleep with his best friend gf, he knows he's garbage and he's so regretful and sorry he's doing anything to get JW's friendship back, it's cool that he's honest with BH and I hope she remains like this just listening but not meddling or pushing NJW to become friends again. And for him to stop YJ right away and to tell her that they just should meet by coincidence and that hits her. She's all alone. Maybe bromance could be recandled but they both have already broke up with her.

The moms, OMG they're so funny to watch, the last time I enjoyed couple's mom relationship was in The Heirs (the only second good thing I found in that show, in my opinion).

On the killers theory, yeah maybe your right, we can see that NJW doesn't trust him, he feels something's not right about the suspect, while BH is maybe biased because she relates to him and his words, NJW is less emotional about it.

That last scene sunk my heart. Poor BH and poor NJW, in voiceover in the beginning of this ep he says what he thinks about new starts, and this one is a big one for him, he's hurt, afraid to the bones while BH was cheated too she moved on easier, she's stronger, You can see from their memories scenes she was a fearless-confident girl, and he was a shy, bookworm (in a good meaning) way. He stutters and only had two friends in his whole life and they betrayed him. So it makes sense to feel like that.

Bong Hee dealt with the cheating maybe she was childish about the one night stand and those murdering songs, but it was her way. As far as we know NJW didn't and maybe he (from what I picked up in the park scene after getting hit and that BH's cursing at that table) didn't even talked about it.

I can't wait next week. This is what I hate about watching a live show. The waiting. Those cliffhangers :(

There will be a riot!
I was also rolling on my floor when JW's mom called to tell on JW about this rude girl, then we have Bonghee commenting that this girl is indeed rude when in fact she is that girl hahaha XD.

I totally LOLed at that part. When BH's mom denies knowing JW's mom, it was so similar to that scene of BH denying she and JW had met. And JW's mom's inexplicable attachment to BH's mom reminds me of how JW just can't stop keeping BH by his side.

I feel like JW's mom will accept BH as his wife just so she can keep BH's mom around.

I lost count at how many times I made vomiting sounds while watching Yoojung talked to Jiwook after droppring her off. That sense of entitlement! It's annoying how even when she is clearly on the wrong and should beg and kneel for forgiveness, she still managed to make the whole thing about HER and how bad SHE suffers. Gosh that's beyond infuriating.

LollyPip, I wholeheartedly agree with your whole comment. Eunhyuk and Yoojung are both wrong, but differences lie on how they behave after that, which shows their true nature as Jiwook's friends. Not saying it's okay bcs it's not, but they are different, hence I see and perceive them differently.

Anyway, interesting theory! One thing I might add, the courier guy frequently visited that house so it may give him glimpse of chef & his wife's life. If the motive is punishing rapist, he got the motive since he probably knew victim's marriage situation. Chanho being murderer also fits the murderer's physical feature we saw earlier.

Lastly, that rejection. It stings but understandable for his part. JW's voice-over explains it well; the attraction is there and he acknowledges it but it's too early for new chapter when his ex is conveniently just coming back and his betrayer friend still hanging around the house. But I am sure Bonghee will just tries harder to convince him it's okay to try opening heart once again, of course with awkward embarassing antics she does while at it.

Now I truly regret not wait until this ends and marathon it instead :(

Thanks for the recap!

-JW's outbursts and pettiness are killing me. He's such a drama queen.
-Hmmm, so is the murderer maybe getting revenge on cheaters/rapists? That would make for a really fascinating villain.
-I only wish I could park my car as well as BH...
-JW and BH's awkward arm-in-arm walk away from YJ was my favorite.
-Just kidding, their bickering about whether to believe HS is my favorite. Let's be real, all of their interactions are my favorite (except that last scene that I'm pretending didn't happen until next week's episodes...).
-Interesting how YJ told JH she would forget about EH, and yet she seeks him out and calls him frequently. I still have a small shred of hope she won't be an awful person/typical second female lead, but I'm starting to lower my expectations.
-I loved when JW checked on BH's neck but didn't force her to tell him what happened. His concern was so touching, but even more awesome was his respect for her boundaries. Something about that really made me love him even more.

I'm really confused as to why BH didn't do anything when DA Jang started to choke her--she's obviously super experienced in taekwondo, and it seemed like a pretty straightforward chokehold (like the kind they always cover in basic self-defense classes), but she didn't even try to get out it. That makes it seem like she was CHOOSING to not fight at all, but I don't understand why. Is it just that she doesn't want to cause trouble? Is she just trying to prove that she's not a violent person? After so long of watching her not take crap from anyway, I was just so stunned to watch her standing there choking without even at attempt to escape. Was she really willing to die just to prove that she's not dangerous?

I assume she was thinking the attorney would actually kill her. like her words in ep 2 about anyone wanting to kill someone came true. at the same time she always believed people can come over their murderous instincts. thus her brain burned a fuse not being able to make sense it was happening.

Required fields are marked *

I think she probably expected that the DA wouldn't kill her (he'd said so himself that he wished he were just a common thug without knowledge of the law) but I also think she probably feels guilt even if she had not commited the murder. She probably understands how the DA feels as a parent, which might explain why she doesn't do anything when he threatens her.

Then again, it would be very, very disadvantageous toward her if she did anything. He could very easily accuse her of bodily harm and she would be charged again.

Oooh.. I didn't consider this at all! yeah why didn't she react? Respect to elders? Not wanting to hurt a man who is grieving his son especially since he mentioned his son's bday and all ? Like eun hyuk told, she has a good heart. I think it must be the elder's part and not to mention he is a DA, no one would believe her if she told she attacked him out of self defence. Also, we all know how the DA would have twisted that had he the oppurtunity, so I guess she just didn't think he would kill her.

I think she feels bad for DA Jung because of his loss of a son, and she knows how much he loves his son. And I also suspect she feels a tad guilty over her ex's death. After all, he was killed in her apartment. He wouldn't be killed if he hadn't come over to her apartment. She might have felt she was the indirect cause of his death.

On one hand I wish she would have at least used some scratching with her nails (self defense), but I have to agree that it would have not been convinient.
I really hate this DA. He is self righteous and blind.
Even if he ist hurt. He has been in the legal field long enough to know that lack of evidence is also a matter to consider.
On the other hand, doesn't he has all the money in the world?
Why is the police not investigating? The case should not be close until they find the culprit.
That is not BH's work, but the police!

My favorite scenes :
1) The lawyers trying to name their new firm Noh and Ji and Byun and Eun and Bang ... when they supposed to be bunch of people with super high intelligence.
2) Bonghee forgets breathing out of nervousness. It's so damn hilarious that I even replay the scene and hold my breath along, just to relate how long she doesn't breathing.
3) Eunhyuk drops off his happy-go-lucky facade then goes into silent tears only when he is alone. He has certainly touched the soft spot within my poor hearteu.
4) Bonghee decides not to tell Jiwook about the cause of her bruishes and Jiwook doesn't corner her to spill it out.

What I dislike:
1) Yoojung takes the usual road of annoying second lead. I dislike that she always prioritizes herself over anything. She runs away because she can't take the guilt. She comes back because she can't get over Jiwook. She visits Eunhyuk just to seek comfort.

What concerns me the most:
Hyunsoo's slight smile during the trial and some other scenes. Just nooo, please, nooo. If Hyunsoo is really guilty for the murder case, that will be huge blow to Bonghee who has done her best to defend him. Our heroine life is complicated already. Let her rest a bit, huhu.

I love how there always seems to be something we probably don't know..i think it's meant to play with the concept of judgment, the main reason why our characters are lawyers and prosecuters..each have their own point of view on the nature of crime and criminals and how to judge them personally. I just loved the scene with JW,BH and HS...the way JW looked at his facial expressions, as if looking for something but not finding it, probably the same thing he did find in BH's face when she was arrested, and knew that she was innocent.
I might have misunderstood the whole excuse part that went through YJ's mind, but i don't think the sickness was what she meant by that but actually what she told JW about her feelings, that his lack of enough affection was the reason for her disappointment in their relationship, i think that's what she meant as making up an excuse for being guilty. JW's lack of expressing love might or might not be true, yet it still can't count as an excuse for cheating, BUT it clearly is very familiar to JW as if that's something he actually thought of after being betrayed by her, like getting beaten where it already hurt. I believe that was the reason why he said what he said to BH. Because once more he was reminded of his fears, it's just that not all the beginnings will take your permission to proceed, and it's going to make for another hurtful realization for him.
I believe that the way he's falling for BH is a lot different from the way he loved YJ, somehow YJ seems like what could have been his only chance at dating a woman at that time considering his awkward social skills...but BH is completely natural course of feeling, without any other thing getting in the way, so it's going to be really interesting when he finds himself so much in love that he won't even consider the possibilities of getting hurt

About Yoo-Jung: WAIT. I'm sorry WHAT!!! That was her reason for cheating??? Words cannot start to describe how inadequate it is. This is what she is saying:
"I was insecure about how much you loved me so i decided that i would cheat on you. then i realised that i like how insecure you make me feel so take me back already. This was basically your fault any way. You should have loved me more."

from what she said, it is clear that she would have cheated anyway; the painful thing is that she chose Eun-Hyuk as her instrument and ruined the friendship of the guys. She is not remorseful and does not understand the gravity of her actions. Seriously! ALL THESE FREE MEN IN KOREA & THE ONE PERSON SHE SLEPT WITH WAS HIS BEST!FRIEND!?

Cummon.

On Bong Hee: That girl is so special & vibrant. I love everything about her character!

On the Law Firm: Loving this mash up of 5 characters in close proximity. "Miss Lack-of-evidence" is great banter & i am here for it.

On Ji Wook: Gosh he is so sensitive towards BH. He is caring and protective. I love their chemistry & could watch the together forever. The scene where he walked into her room to check on her made my heart melt!

About Eun-Hyuk: This puppy was used and manipulated it makes me so sad that his feelings for Yoo-Jung made him behave so foolishly. The fact is that she didn't even love him back. She was literally just taking advantage of how he felt about her for her own selfish needs.

On the killer & Prisoner: Yikes! these two are a team and it scared me. Creeps!

@lollypip: thank you for such an insightful recap. Most importantly, I like all your screenshots today, esp the ones with Otp playing under the rain, and EH's tears.

Some thoughts after this week eps:

On JW, I believe JW has been suffering mostly becos the betrayal by his most beloved friends EH & YJ, not just becos YJ. He didn't have much friends, and I don't think he has relatives or anyone to hang out with. After his father's death, he seemed to spend most time with EH and YJ. When YJ confessed, she asked him to date or to never see her again, I believe 99% in that case anyone would chose to date her (she's his best friend, she's lovely, she loves him first, she's like his family, etc). I doubt that JW actually loved her deeply then. Even if he did, it might only be his first yet immature love... That's why, the fact that his very 2 best friends betrayed him hurts him much more than YJ herself did. He resents EH 'til now, becos he's his best friend, he should not did that. I believe he has even more emotions towards EH than YJ. I don't think JW still loves YJ now.
On the other hand, EH has loved YJ for such a long time, and til now, he can't even fake laughing at her call, her appearance... His tears on the possibility of JW returning to YJ prove it. The only reason to keep himself from pursuing YJ is JW, as he wants to stay by JW and mend his mistake in the past. I will never forget EH once betrayed his best friend with his girl yet; but just as many beanies here, EH is this close to be forgiven, with his awareness of JW's resentment, his acceptance of JW's coldness, his agony on JW's pain,... I really hope he gain back his best friend and have JW, Bong hee consider his feelings, and that he does not have to laugh it off like nothing anymore...
YJ, I don't like her at all. I wish she appears gently in front of EH and JW asking them to be her friends again, to give a her chance of bringing back the trio, and the three can put more thoughts into their relationship. I don't know how confident she is, that she believes JW will not have any other girlfriend, like she knows how much it hurts him? Like she knows how scared he is facing a new chance of relationship? Yet she hurts him???? I don't know how clueless she is, that she calls/meets EH just to ramble on how things are hard for her, how JW has new girlfriend, etc. She doesn't even know EH truly loves her for such a long time, does she? She doesn't even know EH do not want to be with her becos of JW, does she? I just wish YJ character is more thoughtful, more considerate of her bestfriends' feelings... which will definitely make the dynamic among the trio (bestfriends turn lovers turn exes) more interesting and NEW... Actually, if she's that thoughtful, she wouldn't have cheated JW... Sigh...

On Bong Hee and her client: How I wish BH is less sympathy/empathy with her clients. There must be sth going on with Hyun Soo. He is so calm and always sneaks evil...

Yep, I think he was hurt by EH betraying him more than JY. In the flashback he tells BH that he wants to curse at a friend, not even his ex but a friend.
