Suspicious Partner: Episodes 1-2

[Note: Because the broadcasters are now splitting their episodes to accommodate new commercials, they’ve decided to renumber each part. This doesn’t change how much content we’ll be getting, just the way it’s numbered. So Episodes 1-2 refer to the hour that premiered on Wednesday, and Thursday’s second hour will be titled Episodes 3-4. I don’t like the change, but what can you do? –javabeans]

I can already tell that these two are going to kill me. Suspicious Partner pits these strong personalities against each other from the very first minute, and their chemistry crackles as they try to figure out how to define their reluctant relationship. This first episode mostly focuses on laying the story’s groundwork, but every time Ji-wook and Bong-hee butt heads, I can’t help but get excited for what’s to come.

EPISODE 1, PART 1: Hope for the Future

A young woman’s face is partially obscured as she asks the correct way to write something, adding that she’s read a lot of them but has never written one herself. She begins to write, starting with, “When I was little…”

We go back in time, following the young woman, EUN BONG-HEE (Nam Ji-hyun), as she hops onto a subway train. It’s very crowded, forcing Bong-hee to stand, and a timid-seeming man stands to her left.

A weaselly guy on Bong-hee’s right squeezes her bottom, but he strategically grabs the left cheek, making her think the timid man did it. When she feels a second grope, she asks angrily if it was him.

The man, who we’ll come to know as NOH JI-WOOK (Ji Chang-wook), is understandably baffled. She calls him a pervert, which sparks Ji-wook’s temper. Bong-hee doubles down and clarifies that he’s a drunken pervert.

They have an embarrassingly loud argument, with Bong-hee complaining about him touching her ass and Ji-wook insisting that he did no such thing. He indignantly asks why she’s accusing him, and Bong-hee sneers that his fancy suit doesn’t mean he’s not a creeper.

Bong-hee says haughtily that this is an act of sexual violence, which carries a hefty fine or one year in jail. Ji-wook corrects her error in listing the clause number, but Bong-hee only takes his knowledge as proof that he’s quite the experienced pervert.

Bong-hee unknowingly turns to the actual groper and tells him to call security. She leaves the subway car, and when Ji-wook tries to exit after her, she gleefully blocks his way with her formidable stink-eye. Ji-wook’s trapped as the doors close and the train moves on, helpless as Bong-hee smirks triumphantly.

She’s feeling pretty sassy until she remembers her destination. She’d received an anonymous text earlier, saying that if she hurries, she’ll catch her boyfriend at a hotel.

She tells herself it’s just a prank, but she goes anyway, arriving in the lobby just in time to witness her boyfriend, JANG HEE-JOON (Chansung), exiting the elevator with his arm around a woman’s shoulders. Seeing her across the lobby, Hee-joon sends his date ahead of him, then resolutely approaches Bong-hee.

Ji-wook is at the same hotel meeting an older man in the lounge – his boss, CEO BYUN YOUNG-HEE (Lee Deok-hwa). He grumbles that a crazy woman on the subway turned him into a drunk pervert, still bent out of shape from his encounter with Bong-hee.

Bong-hee and Hee-joon sit a few tables away, each waiting for the other to speak. Finally, Bong-hee asks for an explanation, but Hee-joon says matter-of-factly that there isn’t one. With no remorse whatsoever, he calls his cheating a simple mistake.

He deftly skirts all of Bong-hee’s questions, which gives the impression that he’s done this many times before. Bong-hee admits to herself that she’d sensed something wrong lately when certain things stopped adding up.

Hee-joon offers an insincere apology, but Bong-hee is beyond forgiveness. He changes tacticson and says that he’s a young, virile man who couldn’t resist a beautiful woman hitting on him. Bong-hee thinks that’s a crappy excuse, and when Hee-joon says he won’t do it again, she snaps that he’s really saying that he’ll try not to get caught again.

She rises to storm out of the lounge. Hee-joon follows her, and she grabs his hand and twists it painfully. He asks if she’s breaking up with him, but she says that he can wait for her to decide when that happens.

To make it fair, she says that they’ll break up after she has a one-night stand of her own. When Hee-joon objects, Bong-hee declares that she’s going to sleep with the first man she sees. She turns to make a cool exit, which is ruined when the first man she sees is old enough to be her father.

Bong-hee rears back in horror, losing her balance and falling to the floor. Hee-joon proves what a jerk he is by just watching as she stands, disheveled and humiliated, and limps away. She starts to cry and wipes her eyes, accidentally pulling out one of her contacts.

Suddenly, there’s another man standing next to her. Bong-hee asks him if he wants to sleep with her, and when he turns to say that he will, we see that it’s Ji-wook. Bong-hee blinks up at him, his face a blur because of her lost contact.

All she can see is that he’s young and handsome, which is a relief, until she realizes that his voice sounds familiar. She takes a closer look, then she gasps to see her drunken subway pervert leering at her.

He says, “Let’s go,” and drags her away by the wrist. Hee-joon yells that they’re really over if she does this, and with an angry roll of her eyes, Bong-hee grabs Ji-wook’s wrist, slings it around her shoulders, and hauls him all the way to the street. Ha, I love her already.

Once outside, Bong-hee pushes Ji-wook away and makes it clear that she wasn’t serious about sleeping with him, but Ji-wook just yells back that he’s not a drunkard. Bong-hee asks if he put on that act inside just to tell her that, and he barks that he was so offended by her accusations that he had to.

Bong-hee is genuinely surprised that he’s not really a pervert, and by the time he stomps off in a snit, she’s feeling bad about the way she treated him. Ji-wook comes back just to tell her not to carelessly sleep with random men, which is actually kind of sweet, except that he ruins the effect by complimenting himself for saying something so cool. PFFT.

Bong-hee gapes at Ji-wook as he goes, but when she spots Hee-joon coming out to talk to her, she runs after Ji-wook and jumps into his taxi. She desperately begs for his help one last time, flashing him a sheepish smile as the taxi drives away.

Feeling chastened, Bong-hee offers Ji-wook apologies and thanks, but he peevishly refuses to accept them. Bong-hee explains that she doesn’t usually make a habit of offering sex to strangers, but Ji-wook stops her.

She asks him to go for a drink to show her appreciation for his helping her out, but he turns that down too. Bong-hee requests to be dropped off at the corner, and it’s interesting how Ji-wook looks sorry to see her go.

Bong-hee is halfway into a bottle of soju when she realizes that there’s a man standing by her table. For a second she thinks it’s Ji-wook, but it’s just some barfly who says that she looks pitiful all alone. Bong-hee slaps down her National Tae Kwon Do certification card to scare him off before telling him to get lost.

The voice that responds sounds familiar again, and she squints up to see Ji-wook, looking all backlit and swoony as he hands her the compact that she left in the taxi. Bong-hee smiles and croons that she’s happy to see a familiar face.

She slurs that she feels like a loser, having gotten no calls or texts from Hee-joon, then admits that she left the compact on purpose. Ji-wook holds out her compact, intending to leave it and go, but Bong-hee quickly shoves the glass into his outstretched hand and pours a drink. Her hopeful expression convinces Ji-wook to stay.

Bong-hee wakes the next morning in a state of shock, recalling her offer to sleep with Ji-wook and his casual acceptance. She remembers drinking way too much, against Ji-wook’s protestations, then suddenly realizes that she’s in a strange house.

She remembers flirting outrageously with Ji-wook, then refusing to cooperate when he tried to take her home. He’d been forced to bring her to his place, where she’d wrestled him onto the couch and leaned over him, ready for some action. She can’t remember anything after that, and she flails in humiliation.

As Ji-wook showers (thank you drama gods), Bong-hee tries to decide the most appropriate course of action. Should she act casual, or apologize, or maybe thank him? She ends up making a run for it, but she’s stopped cold by her bedraggled image in a security mirror. Lol, she gives herself a disgusted glare like, Really, Self?

Ji-wook exits the shower to find his place empty, and a note stuck to his dartboard that just says Sorry.

Bong-hee checks her phone again on the bus, but she’s still gotten no calls or messages. She starts to write Hee-joon a scathing text for not caring that she took off with a stranger, but she ends up deleting it.

On his way to work, Ji-wook calls CEO Byun, who asks curiously if he slept with the girl from last night. Ji-wook says he’s not sure, but CEO Byun is happy for him anyway, citing Ji-wook’s long dry spell between women.

That puts Ji-wook in a bad mood, reminding him of what must have been the worst moment of his life. He’d let himself into his girlfriend’s apartment one night to surprise her with roses, only to find a trail of discarded clothing leading into her bedroom.

Picking up a man’s tie, Ji-wook had realized what was happening. He’d headed toward the bedroom, and his girlfriend had stepped out wearing a sexy negligee. As she’d looked at Ji-wook guiltily, he could see a man dressing in the room behind her.

Ji-wook thinks about last night in the hotel lounge, when he’d overheard Bong-hee and Hee-joon fighting about his cheating. Hearing Bong-hee’s vow to sleep with the first man she saw, he’d gone up to her deliberately, understanding how she must have been feeling in that moment.

A handsome young man whom we’ll come to know as JI EUN-HYUK (Choi Tae-joon) enters the office of CEO Byun. They discuss Ji-wook and how he’ll never quit his job as a prosecutor, and CEO Byun asks if the two are still fighting. Eun-hyuk just smiles and changes the subject, saying that they should congratulate Ji-wook.

Ji-wook arrives at his office to find his coworkers sarcastically clapping for him, because he’s been chosen as one of the ten official worst prosecutors in the city. HA. He thinks it’s actually a good thing, since having lawyers hate him just means he’s doing his job well.

One fellow prosecutor snaps that that’s not what it means, listing his bad qualities, like ignoring human rights and being biased. Ji-wook defends that he hates criminals, and he hates lawyers who cite human rights as a reason criminals should be set free. He says that their hate is a compliment, and his coworker deadpans that lawyers aren’t the only ones who hate him.

Later, Ji-wook gets a call from his mother, then hangs up when she mentions hearing about his “worst prosecutor” title. His mother grumbles to her masseuse that he was chosen because he’s too righteous, but her masseuse says that her daughter is a legal professional, and that that’s not what she’s heard.

PART 2: Love in Trouble

Bong-hee goes to class distracted by the events of the last twenty-four hours, especially since she still doesn’t know if she slept with Ji-wook or not. Her friend says that she heard Hee-joon dumped Bong-hee after she had a one-night stand, and that the whole school is talking about it in their group chat room.

One particularly haughty student, NA JI-HAE (Kim Ye-won), sneers that a public official with bad grades and loose morals should be embarrassed of herself. Bong-hee tells her to shut up about things she doesn’t know anything about as they glare lightning bolts at each other.

Bong-hee runs into Hee-joon on campus after class, and she fantasizes about flattening him with a roundhouse kick to the face. In reality, she starts to tell him it’s really over, but he interrupts to say, in front of his friends, that he dumped her already. He shakes his head like she’s pathetic, leaving Bong-hee gaping in disbelief.

That night, Bong-hee dreams that when she was drunk, Ji-wook had screamed at her that this is why she got dumped. Her mother, the masseuse who argued with Ji-wook’s mom, is still at her place in the morning after spending the night treating Bong-hee for a fever.

Bong-hee confesses that she failed an exam, but her mom just encourages her to keep at it. She’s even supportive when Bong-hee tells her that she dumped Hee-joon, so Bong-hee runs over to snuggle with her and promise to focus on becoming a lawyer and supporting her mother.

Bong-hee is placed on academic probation and is sent to intern under a prosecutor, a judge, and a lawyer for two months each. The new power couple on campus consists of Hee-joon and Ji-hae, and Bong-hee takes great enjoyment in annoying them in retaliation for Hee-joon destroying her reputation. She plays her new “crazy woman” role to the hilt, pretending to curse them with death.

When it’s time to start her internship with the prosecutor, Bong-hee tells herself that this is a new beginning. She enters the office with a bright smile and a cheerful greeting, but she loses her composure when she sees that the drunken pervert she may have slept with is her new boss.

Ji-wook keeps his expression neutral, though he muses that she seems familiar. He asks if she ever rides the number six subway line or visits hotels, deliberately trying to fluster her even further.

Once he’s got Bong-hee off-kilter, Ji-wook asks why she left that morning, and she starts to answer, only to switch mid-sentence to say that she doesn’t know what he’s talking about. He tells her to stop being so shameless, to which Bong-hee retorts that he’s making fun of her, and he justifies that he’s just testing her honesty.

Bong-hee suddenly mentions the pervert that groped her butt, which wipes the smirk right off Ji-wook’s face. He growls that it wasn’t him and reminds her that she’s on probation, and he’s her instructor.

Bong-hee doesn’t miss a beat, quipping that since she’s already screwed, she has one question she’d like to ask in private. Ji-wook tells her that he has nothing to hide, unlike some people. Bong-hee blurts, “Did we sleep together or not?” and asks if he also hit her, since her face was sore the next morning. Ji-wook didn’t expect her to call his bluff in front of his coworkers, and he finally loses his temper.

His coworkers step into the hall, terrified of the argument that’s going on inside. Eun-hyuk joins them and tries to eavesdrop, but he just gets a hard knock on the head when Bong-hee bursts through the door, ha.

Ji-wook stops her from apologizing to Eun-hyuk, then pointedly ignores the lawyer when he tries to talk to him. Eun-hyuk innocently swears that he voted Ji-wook as best prosecutor, but Ji-wook walks away without a word.

As he leads Bong-hee through the halls, he grumbles that she just turned him from merely the worst prosecutor into a prosecutor who hits and gropes women. Unconcerned about his reputation, she asks again if they slept together.

Ji-wook smugly says that he was hit on by a woman that night, and that he’s not a saint, especially after a few drinks. Wide-eyed, she asks for an answer, but all Ji-wook says is, “I’m not sure.”

Bong-hee has lunch with her friend WOO HEE-KYU, who tells her that prosecutor instructors are either fair, or they work interns to death. Of course Ji-wook is the second kind, and she’s assigned all the worst work. Soon she’s frazzled and wild-eyed from everything she’s been asked to do.

Ji-wook smugly tells Bong-hee that this is his way of helping her to become better. Bong-hee thanks him, but she looks like she’s about to snap, and her job grows even harder when she’s assigned to deal with the most frustrating criminals.

She’s bruised with a bloody nose by lunch time, when a man is brought to her to confess his crime of lewd behavior toward women. Bong-hee recognizes him from the subway that day, and she suddenly realizes that this must be her real groper.

He doesn’t seem upset at the idea of going to jail, saying that he’d actually like to go there, where it’s safe. He tells Bong-hee that he witnessed a murder one night while peeping on women in the building next to his. He says that he saw a dark figure on the building’s roof carrying what looked like a body.

He’s sure the figure saw him and has been scared the killer would return to silence him. Bong-hee just has him taken away and goes outside to eat lunch.

Hee-joon and Ji-hae walk past, so Bong-hee sing-songs her curse at them again. This time, Ji-hae tells her to stop it, saying she has no right after the things she’s supposedly doing to gain favor with her prosecutor.

Ji-wook happens by in time to hear Hee-joon telling Bong-hee to wash her hair, at the very least. He goes to Bong-hee and shocks them all, even himself, by saying, “I missed you.” HAHA, what?

Bong-hee looks at him like he’s gone and lost his very last marble when he says awkwardly that she’s dirty, but also pretty. Poor Ji-wook looks like he’d rather be anywhere else on the planet as he stammers that he fell for her at first sight, but he commits to the act and even pats her on the head.

The whole scene is so weird that Hee-joon and Ji-hae just leave. Ji-wook relaxes and tells Bong-hee that her fake curse isn’t the right way to get back at her ex — instead, she should ignore him and live well. Bong-hee asks why he’s being nice to her all of a sudden, but he just tells her to wash her face, ha.

He closes his eyes for a moment, and Bong-hee stares at him, suddenly realizing how very pretty he is. She remembers more of their night together, recalling that he’d told her earnestly that it’s normal to wonder what’s wrong with her when she gets dumped that way, and that he understands because he’s been there himself. But he insists that they didn’t do anything wrong, and that the others were wrong for betraying them.

She drifts off a bit, and when she wakes later, Ji-wook is gone. Bong-hee knows now that he didn’t slap her, he’d just been holding her face firmly when he’d said all that, which is why she was sore.

Back in the office, Bong-hee watches Ji-wook with new understanding, knowing that he was nice to her because he was also betrayed. She snaps out of it when he tells her to go home and shower because she’s filthy, and she snarls back that he sucks, hee.

Still, she tries to be nice, offering to buy him dinner if she finishes her internship without killing him. He just fires back that if she finishes without becoming a murderer, he’ll give her a compliment. Bong-hee grumbles that she was joking, but Ji-wook says that he meant her ex-boyfriend, and he tells her to stop threatening to kill Hee-joon. He warns her not to show up in front of him as a suspect, because he’s ruthless.

Bong-hee sincerely thanks Ji-wook for helping her earlier in front of Hee-joon, then heads home. She runs into Hee-joon outside the building, who smirks at her for showing off with her prosecutor in front of him. He ends up with another twisted arm while Bong-hee calls him trash and tells him that he left some things at her place.

She makes a cool exit and goes home to shower, while her voice narrates that she thinks she grew up to be a pretty decent person, but that’s all about to change. She goes for a walk, and while she’s out, the power goes out all over the city. She buys some beer at the convenience store but has to pay cash, the CCTVs are all off, and the employee won’t recognize her later since he never took his eyes off his phone.

Bong-hee goes home to her apartment, tripping over something in the dark. She sees that it’s Hee-joon lying on her floor, and when she reaches out to rouse him, her hands come away covered in blood. As Bong-hee shakes in fear, her voice tells us that she has no alibi because of the blackout.

We return to the opening scene, which turns out to be Bong-hee writing down events as she remembers them. Ji-wook enters the room and reminds her that he warned her not to turn up in front of him this way. Bong-hee thinks to herself, “I grew up and became a murderer.”

COMMENTS

I’m going into Suspicious Partner mostly blind, having very little idea of the basic plot beyond the concept of a prosecutor and an intern having a personality clash. I’m doing this deliberately, as I’m learning lately that I enjoy shows a lot more when everything is a surprise, and this show is proving to be no exception. I really love the droll humor and interesting cinematography (some shots were so beautifully lit that I had to pause the show just to take a moment to appreciate the gorgeous lighting angles), and I particularly like the fun, quirky characters. I’m willing to put up with a lot of plot holes and story weaknesses if a show has great characters, and in that sense, the drama really shines.

Both Bong-hee and Ji-wook are so extreme in their personality oddities that they both had me cracking up from the very first scene. Bong-hee is like a bull in a china shop, getting an idea in her head and running away with it without even considering any other explanations, which seems to be a bad habit that gets her into a lot of trouble. And Ji-wook is comically uptight, but also has this air of vulnerability that I find intriguing (and that reminds me quite a lot of Ji Chang-wook’s Healer alter-ego, Bong-sook). When they’re together, I can’t take my eyes off their hilarious facial expressions – between Ji-wook’s haughty superiority and Bong-hee’s transparent frustration, they’re both a treat to watch.

The characterizations in the show are very interesting to me, because somehow, everyone seems to be very different from the faces they present to the world. Bong-hee is a bold, outspoken young woman, but she also appears very insecure and unsettled in moments of extreme emotion. Ji-wook is known as a bad prosecutor who breaks rules, coming across as cold and ruthless with his colleagues, but he can also be very soft-spoken and insightful, particularly in the way he sympathized with Bong-hee and jumped in to help her multiple times. It’s a good sign that Ji-wook feels a sort of kinship with Bong-hee, having both been betrayed by someone they love, particularly since she’s going to need that sympathetic spirit as she fights to prove her innocence in Hee-joon’s murder.

Even Eun-hyuk feels like he’s wearing a mask in the few scenes we’ve seen him, particularly in the way he smiles placidly when he doesn’t want to answer a question, which gives me some Missing 9 vibes. He seems like he’s hiding something, and his “friendly” overtures towards Ji-wook carry a note of smug superiority that puts me on edge. I won’t be at all surprised if we discover that he was the man sleeping with Ji-wook’s ex-girlfriend. I’m very curious about all of the main players, and I can’t wait to see their true selves revealed.

Honestly, as much as I genuinely like the characters, I found the plot itself a little bland except for the first and the final scenes. I understand that the basics need to be established, but it just felt draggy for a while in the middle. But killing off the jerk ex-boyfriend brought my interest racing back, and I suspect that the plot will speed up now that it has a direction to go in. And this first episode did lay down a lot of interesting bread crumbs that seem as though they’ll be fun to follow, such as Ji-wook’s antagonistic relationship with Eun-hyuk, not to mention the question of whether Ji-wook and Bong-hee slept together or not on the night they met. It’s a fun twist to see the male and female leads on opposite sides of a murder investigation with one of them being the main suspect, and I’m anticipating a lot of interesting twists and turns as the story moves forward.

Thanks LollyPip?

I'm already loving the vibe that SP gives off. I'm surprised at how fast it changed from cheery and light to dark in a matter of five minutes though.

I think it's pretty interesting that Ji Wook seems to be so black and white with victims at the moment. Although I'm sure that will change with Bong Hee. I like how he's not the typical straight up mean protagonist and then changes - he seems like a pretty realistic kind of guy.

I'm wondering what his relationship is with Eun Hyuk and what they've fallen out over (pls don't take the long awaited bromance from us haha)

Also I'm really liking Bong Hee, she's so sassy at times but then vulnerable in others - which Ji Wook has managed to catch her at those moments. Nam Ji Hyun you are slaying with those facial expressions when you glare at Ji Wook hahaha.

I really hope they don't reveal him to be the guy with Ji-wook's ex just because I'd like for there to be a more refreshing conflict between them. It would be so much harder to root for the bromance if they went there!

Plus, with Nara clearly coming back into the equation at some point, I'd rather we leave the resolving of that baggage to JW and her. I'm curious whether they'll be able to make her character at all likable after the infidelity. This writer does fairly well with fleshing out the second leads so I won't write her off just yet. Though I'll definitely be surprised if I ever grow to like her.

I feel your sentiments. However, I do think that Eunhyuk was the guy with Jiwook's ex but then I cannot reconcile that with the way he's acting around Jiwook. I wonder what truly happened. Anyway, I have faith in this writer.

Whoa, whoa. Suspected murder? I saw the trailers and her in the prison uniform but it still came as a bit of a shock to me. After SWDBS, I'm a little iffy about the whole rom-com-with-criminal aspect, but hopefully this show does it better.

Overall, E1 wasn't as "funny" as I'd expected. There were some comedic scenes that didn't make me laugh - especially after Bong Hee said she would sleep with the next man and an old man appeared. I know it was meant to be really funny but it somehow didn't hit the spot for me, because I was too busy feeling bad for BH. BUT I'll say that it did leave me wanting to see E2, which is always a great sign.

On Bong Hee: I've to admit, I wasn't initially charmed during the subway scene because she somehow reminded me of Chae Ro Woon in My Shy Boss during the initial episodes - brash, rude and too stubborn to listen to what others have to say.

On Chang Wook: I love how he was so exasperated that he even contemplated whacking her with his briefcase when she refused to tell him where she lived, because it was just hilarious. And wait - is his name in this show Chang Wook, too? That must be confusing for him, heh.

So far, I like CW. He's just... so decent. Even after being accused wrongly, he still wanted to help her because he empathized? There's a good guy right there. CW almost reminds me of a fussy mom, LOL. He's all naggy (telling her to be careful because tons of men would want to sleep with her) and petty and gets exasperated so easily. I really want to know why he hates criminals so much, why is he so hard on them?

Thank you for the recap!

Whilst her brash personality made her seem a little like Ro-woon to me, I think Eun Bong-hee's character was far better built. I loved how she just embraced her new crazy person identity!

I agree. Bonghee has the potential to be an annoying character, but Jihyun's portrayal is just so raw that I already loved here when she showed both shrewdness and vulnerability in the first half hour in episode 1.

Oh, I thought it was hilarious when she swerved...I just think the show wasn't trying to play it completely for comedy (maybe this is why it didn't come off as all that funny?), because, well, it was also a sad, pitiful moment for her so the hilarity of the moment was almost immediately undercut by the emotion of the scene. While this show may not be laugh-out-loud hilarious, I'm enjoying the wackiness of it and the delivery of the leads certainly gets me giggling quite a bit.

I get what you're saying about Bong-hee, but I found the character introductions refreshing for moving quickly past that initial misunderstanding and even giving a compelling reason for why she wasn't in the clearest state of mind. Also, if a character actually gets immediately called out for their brash behavior, then I am far less likely to mind their flaws. I personally think she had charm in spades to compensate for them.

In fact, she reminded me more of Han Groo from Marriage Not Dating than Chae Ro-woon for this reason. That's another example of a flawed heroine who made some mistakes in the first ep, but was then immediately made to face the consequences. They also both got those crazy eyes down, lol.

For me, these are examples of spunky heroines done right because the writing/acting sells both the strengths and weaknesses of the characters effectively and in a way that actually makes me care MORE for them, rather than less.

Yes, the emotional hurt I felt for her at that moment kind of overwhelmed any humour I might have felt... it was just that one scene I felt oddly about though, but the rest of the funny bits did tickle me. The whole "did I sleep with him or not" was hilarious, heh.

Oops, I realized I'd left a bit of my comment out. I meant to say that I wasn't initially charmed by her, but she kind of grew on me throughout the episode. Girl's got spunk and she's a hard worker for sure. It's just that my first impression of her wasn't all that great. Plus, the whole cheating boyfriend thing really made me empathize with her. I agree with you, she's got spades of charm!

Yesss, you have to have a talented and charming actress to pull off a scene that's going to make her appear bratty to the audience in the moment, but forgivable and more relatable as the show progresses.

This actress emanates charm whereas the actress that played Rowoon was far too green to pull it off.
It's quite refreshing to see a quality actress in a lead roll.

I just love Nam Jihyun more and more with each drama she is in. I admit I was not a fan of SKL but that's more of my taste in drama and not on the actors because I love both NJH and SIG.

Hehehe, me too, but that might be my love for JCW speaking. He won me over completely in Empress Ki and Healer. And, a topless shower scene in E1 already? They've got to milk every bit of his abs, don't they? *smirk face*

I know right?! Why don't they make it into a 5 minute shower? why???

2

My standards for JCW in a shower scene have forever been altered by the K2. No other shower scene will come close. But Suspicious Partner at least tried, eh?

3

I love that three piece gray pinstripe suit he wore in ep 1. Then they gave us a surprise 2-second shower scene; thanks, even if it was short! The leads are so much fun to watch.

I confess that this drama is the drama that finally got me to truly like (and I'm dangerously getting close to loving) Ji Changwook. I think I prefer him in romcom than in action which is insane, I know, because he's got the built for insane action scenes. Anyway, he's doing a really good job as Jiwook. I'm sold!

Also not very happy with a murderer in the picture, but let's give them a chance....

Yes I loved all of JCW's little quirks. It makes his character human. I was all ready for a brooding geniuuuuussss cold hero but he comes off as surprisingly endearing.
He is annoying and a very difficult mentor but does not come off as haughty or arrogant. Fussy mom suits him so well, lol.

The reason why he hates criminals so much is in next episode, and I loved that reason as well. It was not something extremely dramatic, but very simple and relatable.

It doesn't help that they're trying out this new Part 1 and Part 2 thing. I find some of the editing to be alright most of the time, but there were definitely some off moments. I haven't quite figured out if there was ever another guy in that drunk scene, lol! That said, I felt like the ending was fairly well set-up.

6

Required fields are marked *

The "part 1" and "part 2" thing is really annoying me. Mentally I already feel drained from having to watch a "32" ep show, which I know is insane, because there's literally no difference time-wise, but there ya have it. On top of that it feels wrong to cut the eps halfway. The show was clearly written with the usual 1hr eps in mind and so it feels off to cut it off in the middle, even if the second hand comes right after.

Pretty sure there was a second guy in that drunk scene. To me it seemed like Not-so-welcome Guy approached her and in her drunken and contact-less state she first assumed him to be Ji Wook, before she realized it was not. He then sat down, she chased him away and then Real Ji Wook showed up. The editing is definitely a bit weird and confusing at times though, here as well. But that was also the case with the first few eps of TLAHL, which turned out completely fine, so I'm willing to give this the benefit of the doubt ^^

Yes I think editing might get better with future episodes. SWDBS had that problem as well, first few episodes were extremely choppy despite how disconnected different story threads where.

I think shows always struggle finding their tone in first few episodes and take time getting settled into the story flow.

Great recap! Thank you :) I love these characters and the vibe too! So so much <3. Only a tiny bit worried that the show will suffer from "Do Bong Soon" syndrome--where I love the scenes with the couple, but the rest of the show drags a bit. The breadcurmbs are there---I guess the murder is the same one that the creeper saw, right?---but I'm still more invested in the couple than the murder at this point. As the recap said, I'd be willing to put up with a lot to see more of these two. I'm in!

Thanks LollyPip! I'm glad I'm not the only one who caught the Bongsookie moments.

As soon as I saw the 2 mothers together, I was like they're going to be the mothers for our leads. It's such a funny relationship (also, does anyone watching My Secret Romance recognize Lee Yoomi's mom as Jiwook's mom here?)

I'm very curious about the relationship between CEO Byun and Eunhyuk. Also, does anyone else think Na Jihae was the woman at the hotel with Heejoon? The haircut matched.

This drama was refreshing in that Bonghee was able to recognize characters from a few months earlier such as Jiwook and the groping pervert. Normally, drama characters can't remember people they met a few hours ago. The apartments around Bonghee's looked quite similar to the apartments where the pervert lives and witnessed the murder. It might possibly be the same murderer who killed Heejoon.

It can't be the same murder because Bong-hee saw Hee-joon alive after the groper told her what he saw. Also there are lights on in some of the apartments when the groper spots the murderer, but Hee-joon was murdered during a blackout. Almost certainly the same murderer, but not the same murder.

The thing that surprised me was why nobody even checked to see if anyone was killed or went missing on the night the groper saw the scary person.

I just knew from the moment she started singing her curse song that she would end up accused of murdering her boyfriend. Also, the real pervert possibly knows who is the killer.

But I enjoyed this immensely. JCW and NJH are awesome in their roles. Indeed their chemistry is "crackling."

What I'm really curious about, besides how the plot itself will unfold... is IF this show will succeed in balancing the rom-com vs thriller aspect. And if this is a WHODUNNIT, (I'll be even more worried) but I'd hope it'll keep us on the edge of our seats till the end.

I particularly liked everything she said during the break-up scene, it was just perfect. When she said that she would decide about breaking up, I was practically jumping up and down clapping my hands. I enjoyed his take-down in that scene beyond belief lol, it was just so strong and powerful. But then she tripped, which is honestly so relatable lol. And then the bastar... I mean ex-boyfriend went and spread rumors about her and it was perfect in that it's again very authentic to real life, but boy... REALLY enjoyed this first installment? er, episode? Episodes 1&2? Anyway...agree with everyone on the leads, they are a delight (after K2 & dancing ramen - I have to admit I was a bit worried I would have to watch Healer again for a JCW fix) . But the thing I am most excited about is that we START the show with adult relationships already established & experienced. They have had 'the sex'. (Also the reason I am enjoying Secret Romance (?)) It is oddly refreshing to watch a drama where our leads are not experiencing everything for the first time...in their 30s! With that I also enjoy that our leads did not fall for each other after their first encounter. I was a bit worried at first but the show did not disappoint & gave us a lovely time jump. Thanks show! Yet there are people over 30 who had not have had sex!!! I know some, really.... they remain chaste; mostly for religious reasons, while, by the way in most dramas they make it look like it is because they have not yet found the "right one"... but, then again, in real life although rare, there are still those gems... and being chaste does not mean one is not an adult...

I used to be like that, but I got married being almost 38, looking like 28, by the way!!! LOL!!!!

I liked the first half very much, but the second half was kind of draggy for me. The part where he came and said all that mushy stuff was a bit too cheesy for me, I kept thinking, can a prosecutor say that so loudly in front of the other two, wouldn't it start tongues wagging? Because he IS her boss, and she's learning the ropes under him. Then she makes faces at him all the time in the office, I know they have a "history" and all that, but it kind of bothered me because it didn't seem very professional.

I love her hair though, it's so beautiful, what shampoo does she use? Her complexion, too is so beautiful, glowing and radiant.

The shower scene is mandatory when it comes to JCW, I know, but it still made me gasp that it happened so early.

Well, unfortunately, it became clear that rumors had already spread so I think the point was to give off vibes that they had a sincere relationship (rather than a frivolous one with her seducing him for favors). I agree that the logic isn't completely there and that it would have made more sense to leave it alone. But it's in line with his character's tendency to begrudgingly come to Bong-hee's aid so I enjoyed it, hehe.

Also, I honestly think the cheese was intentionally forced in that scene precisely because he was so delightfully awkward in delivering it. It was like he had no idea what he was doing so he just came out with the cringiest dialogue possible. He had this hilariously uncertain expression on his face as if he knew how ridiculously cheesy (and fake) his words sounded. They all did honestly and that's why it was one of my hugest LOL scenes of the episode.

Is there actually comedy there?! Other than the secretary, I don't find humor anywhere else!

There's an attempt lol (a sound effect will tell us that a scene is supposed to be funny), but it's so bland to even be considered 'humor' for me

I really liked the first episode. I like all the characters, including the jerk ex lol. The interactions between Bond-hee and Ji-wook are hilarious. I can't wait to see what will happen between these two.

Groping bit aside, the hotel scenario reminded me quite a bit if Sam-Soon. Never a bad thing.

I was thinking the same thing. Didn't think anyone was old enough (sorry if assuming you're OLD, because I am hahaha) to catch the similarity.

I loved this first episode but the ratings breaks my heart! That's why I didn't want RMTM and SP to compete in the same timeslot! I love the cast of both dramas! My heart will break if the last drama of Ji Chang Wook before his enlistment is not well received in Korea and also for Kim So hyun if her first (big) leading role is in a disappointed drama!

I was just thinking this was a great rom-com when her ex-boyfriend's body shows up in her apartment. Now I don't know what to think!

Thanks Lollypip!

"Ji-wook is at the same hotel meeting an older man in the lounge – his boss, CEO BYUN YOUNG-HEE (Lee Deok-hwa)."

Pipster! Glad to see you're taking on 'SP'! But a small correction there -- without being more spoiler-y, Lee Deok-hwa is not Ji-wook's boss; he is Ji-wook's Prosecutor Department Boss's ex-friend and rival who owns his own law firm that is trying to get Ji-wook to join his own lawyer stable.

MBC is doing the same split episode format with "Ruler," but it's going to take me a bit longer to get used to the process. It's a sad commentary on today's Korean drama productions that they need to shove in more CFs just to offset the lack of money flowing in from China due to the THAAD controversy.

Regardless, I can finally exhale with a sigh of relief. I always get tied up in sleepless knots right before my Baby Boy's drama premieres. I don't think I have anything to worry about now. ?

I'll tell you what - I'd MUCH rather they break the episodes apart for a full advertising break during broadcast in Korea if it means they will NOT insert Subway PPLs or any other PPLs into the drama itself. Heck, please take a five minute break and spare us make-up, bottled water, ramen, coffee houses, cell phones and...oh god...any dream sequence that contains Subway saving lives. Poor JCW - I've wondered if he had nightmares after filming that awful sequence for The K2!

I guess I'm in a minority since I didn't like the first 2 instalments.

I watched for JCW.

Maybe the whole being billed as a rom-com but actually infused with bloody murder scenes is throwing me off.

Will reserve judgement after watching another few episodes.

Hmm. See, I know it was billed as a rom-com. I get that. But ever since the beginning it's been billed as a thriller too? So I don't really get how this would come as a surprise. The amnesiac killer on the loose is kinda in the plot description. Personally, I get not liking genre mixes because I've had some that have felt really off to me. But I love them when they're done well and so far this one's working for me.

It helps that I adore the pairing though.

i don't understand the TWO PARTS thing -- Ruler: Master of the Mask is doing the same thing...
why?

If I remembered correctly (there was an article about it), doing a whole regular episode is just too costly. So, by splitting it into two parts, they can jam in more commercials to generate more profits.

It's so the networks can include more commercials between the parts.

Yay, I'm so happy you're recapping, Lollypip. I find your recaps come out right on time for me because they give me just enough time to process the episode, while still beating the new ep's release (well, the subbed version anyway). Thanks!

I adore the lead characters so much already! Honestly, I'm having a hard time even analyzing whatever flaws I noticed here and there because I'm too busy smiling because of them. I'm just enjoying the banter and relationship-building so much already. For a rom-com, that's the most important part!

I'm also liking how the thriller aspect is handled so far because the mysterious occurrences are being teased out fairly well, even if they weren't mined for narrative tension until the very end. I see some mention of SWDBS, but I Remember You proves that this writer takes integrating her thriller plot seamlessly into the rest of the story much more seriously. I think we're in good hands. It seems like we'll be getting something more like I Hear Your Voice, just with a bit more of a wacky, SWDBS-like tone.

Something that's already making me feel confident in the writer is her attention to little details, like the power outage and all the intricacies of why Bong-hee's alibi is going to be impossible to verify. Also, as a fellow sufferer of lost contacts, the inclusion of that detail as reason for many of Bong-hee's mishaps tickled me.

There was something so ominous about the build-up at the very end. Even though most of the episode didn't have that tone, when I watched it a second time, I realized just how many things are off from the beginning. For example, who sent her that anonymous text about Hee-joon's cheating? I can tell that there is quite a bit of thought put into the framing of her character, but we just haven't tapped into it yet because they let the rom-com bits carry the episode. Which is completely fine by me ;)

Can't wait for more!

I promised. I swore I wasn't going to read the recaps or follow the show until it was over, avoiding all reviews and comments everywhere. But I went and read the whole thing. You know that look where you know you screwd up majorly but you just sit there in the evidence of your guilt with a contented smile, having no regrets at the moment while internally cursing yourself cause it feels so damn good? Yeah, that's me. I've been a very bad girl. This is what I actually dropped by to say:

"Lollypip is recapping? Yaaaaayyyy!!! *sprays confetti*"

But weak mortal me couldn't resist a mesmerizingly pretty Ji Chang Wook and a stunning smile on Nam Ji Hyun had me in the middle of the recap before I realized what I was doing. I also blame Lollypip's opening paragraph, these words in particular, 'crackling chemistry'. Flightey = goner!!
In the words of Cercei Lannister, shame shame SHAME!!

PS: I'm sure Mr Choi Tae Joon must be pretty so I'm looking forward to clearing his forehead of that cropped haircut that looks like it was achieved by placing a melted bowl on his head.

PPS: notice I haven't said anything of value in relation to the recap except that Nam Ji Hyun has an interesting beauty that makes you want to get to know her, conversation style. Its impressive how she can look do mature and so young at the same time. Kim So Hyun(LFG) has that quality too, so does Kang Hanuel and Yoo Seung Ho.

Bye for now!!!

I have watched episode 1 (or should I say 1 and 2?), but haven't watched ep 2 yet (or should I say 3 ad 4?). Anyways I thought the first episode was better than expected, and I think this is JCW's best style in a drama so far. I just hope that the story will hold up, because both the H/h are good actors.

On a side note, I wonder why they seem to be going for this new format with episodes? It looks like they are cutting every episode into 2 consecutive episodes instead (at half an hour each). I haven't watched "Ruler" yet, but it looks like they are dividing the episodes of that drama as well. So is this the new trend now?

JCW & NJH are perfectly matched in this drama. I love that they're effortless in their characters; especially the sparks they give off when sharing the screen. I LMAO'D myself to death (surprised I'm still alive to type this) at their night and day characters. One is hilariously and seemingly wacko (albeit endearing), while the other is adorably haughty. I pray to the DRAMA GODS that his show will consistently deliver in the most amazing ways!

I'll be really honest here...

In the first episode (or two? It's so confusing), I kept picturing JCW as a secret agent or Healer.

And I kept thinking about Louie.

Because of that, I couldn't fully cheer on our current OTP, but it'll probably come in the next episodes.

I had similar feelings, but kept telling myself: She is Bok shil´s long lost twin sister, and he is the Healer´s long lost twin brother... That would be the only explanation!!! LOL!!!! they even have adoptive mothers!!!!! ha hahahahahahah

I loved how that b*tch Na ji Hae was talking about someone with bad grades and loose morals having a one night stand and that random guy was like: She talkin' bout me?? ? I really like this kind of humor.
All in all I really liked the first episode. It went by like a breeze. I love the characters (the 2 mothers though, I still need to warm up to a little bit more....would be awesome if they would become bickering friends).
I'm excited to see where this show is going to take us.
(One thing though, holding her face firmly made her feel like she was hit the day before? That's a bit of a stretch. ^^')

I'm also happy that you are the one recapping this Lollypip. :) Your recaps always come quickly, I appreciate that. (nothing against other recappers, we all have our own schedules)

Surprisingly, my favorite OTP scene of this episode isn't one of their many sparring-matches (though those are certainly proving fun). It's actually that little moment when she sneaks the soju glass into his hand and fills it before he can stop her. I have no idea why, but their chemistry was off-the-charts adorable during this little interaction. Maybe because they both softened towards each other for that brief moment. And the reveal of the words he spoke later that night made it all the sweeter :)

I enjoyed myself thoroughly watching the first two (?) episodes. I confess not knowing why the decision to split the one hour episode into 30 minute segments leaves me slightly bewildered. But whatever goes, I guess. It's just odd seeing a 20 episode drama listed as 40 episodes on Viki and so on...

Thanks for the recap Lollypip!

I admit to being thrown off by the distinct direction style of this drama at first. It appeared like a contemplative narration of a story to unfold with mostly natural visuals to rely on and subdued dramatization and limited background music. Coming from the dramaworld filled with dramas the complete of this, it took some getting used to. Part of the difficulty lay in the fact that this episode was indeed getting draggy in the middle, as Lollypip mentioned. Like that scene where we saw Bong-hee throw a high-kick at her ex, only to have it re-winded. It was getting boring and I don't know why. But I agree that it definitely picked up in the end where we saw what looked like a calculated effort to frame Bong-hee for her ex's murder. It reminded me that this drama also falls within the thriller/mystery category and that thats where this distinct narration style may come strong and prove effective in twisting our guts and hearts. So I'm getting good vibes

I further agree that good vibes also come from our strong leads. Nam ji-hyun has been exceptional in like every drama I've seen her in, but I can't always say I've been pleased with her character in all the drama. But in this one, I LOVE Bong-hee. This is because while her headstrong personality leads her to often overlook facts and get into messy situations, she's humble enough to admit when she's wrong and make an attempt to fix it. Which I LOVE, maybe because many heroines shown as headstrong and mighty appear to lack this basic trait.
