Drama viewership ratings for the week of May 8-14, 2017

We’ll be seeing a bit of a change in the ratings chart for the near future/possibly forever/who even knows, since both MBC and SBS have decided to split their programming into two “episodes” a day rather than one to compensate for the new commercial breaks they’re attempting to integrate. It’s been a bit of a crazy week for both broadcasters and viewers alike while everyone tried to adjust to the change, but hey, maybe if there are commercials, there’ll be less Subway. I suppose the question on everyone’s mind is: What if Subway buys commercial time too? (*cries*)

With pre-emptions still going on, only one episode of Whisper and Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People aired this week, with Whisper still taking top spot. Meanwhile, The Liar and His Lover ended at 1.4%, which is about the same numbers it’s been pulling in the entire run. I wonder if tvN will be able to put out mainstream hits in that timeslot again, or if they’re just better off creating niche dramas like Liar that may not appeal to everyone, but appeal to a select group very well. It’ll be sad to see the show go, that’s for sure.

We had two new premieres over in the middle of the week with Ruler—Master of the Mask and Suspicious Partner, with both trying out the new commercial format. Ruler came out on top by its fourth episode at a very strong 12.6%, while Suspicious built on the numbers it started with and ended the week with 7.2%. There’ll be a host of new premieres coming up soon enough, so it’s a good time to be a dramaland fan.

Yay for the good ratings for MTM! The stakes are very high in this week's episodes, so no wonder the ratings would increase somewhat. I hope they would go higher too.

Because the writer of Man to Man was the original writer on DOTS. DOTS had two writers, Kim Won Seok and Kim Eun Sook.

All I can say is... don't listen to the criticism. KMJ pulls off DH so fantastically, she's just so open and wears her heart on her sleeve, and I completely appreciate how she's brave, smart, and unafraid to express her feelings. She's probably my favourite character (yes, surprisingly, because I'm usually biased toward male leads) in the show, and I think it's a waste to drop it because then you don't get to see how awesome she gets over time! Give it a try again, you might like it! (;

I confess I didn't like her until episode 8 (I don't mean the acting, I didn't like the character, whom I found very naive) but then I suddenly became a fan. I won't spoil it for you, but her character is developing beautifully, and she'll prove to not be your typical damsel in distress. Give her a few episodes (and ignore the hair if you can't bear it - they actually joke about it in the drama).

1

What lezah said. I would take any criticism, or even praises for that matter, with a grain of salt, and would advise anyone else to do the same with my reviews, be they positive or negative. I'd always recommend that you walk into the show with an open mind and if you like it, then you like it, and if you don't, then you don't. I read all the comments too but only my own judgement will stop me from watching a show.

YAY for the increase in the MxM rating, the show is really great, it deserves the ratings!

Required fields are marked *

I think the problem with CT was the promotion. They promoted it as a writer who gets stuck in a slump. While that was what the first episodes were about, it's not the crux of the drama, so people who might have really loved it, didn't come to watch it in the beginning. And it's very difficult to increase ratings after your audience is set.

I wasn't really following the promotions of CT but they really did that??

If they promoted it something related to the 1930s then it could get some audiences or maybe it's diff in Korea.

Yay for Tunnel episode 13 was mind blowing, the ratings are higher than Voice it's hard to admit but it's better than Voice in my opinion.

CT seems to do well (at least it's better than TWY) there's still hope that the ratings might go up at leas 3%.

Finally MBC managed to be in the first spot with an impressive ratings, next week will be the deciding factor.
the way i see it 7DQ will have a chance against SP if the ratings are the same. MQ seems to have its own audience, it's been the same numbers for weeks.

I don't believe that Voice got lower ratings because of its quality: it was a really well made show, created by very talented people but it was dark, very violent even gore.
Without romance and with no happy/cute family scenes to soften the tension.

Such an intense show is obviously not made for the mainstream audience, and yet it managed to get some of the highest rating that OCN ever got.

Tunnel is more consensual but also more easily forgettable...

Tbh tvn isn't doing that well since goblin ended. More like this is jtbc who has been showing more promise with my wife is having an affair, do bong soon, tunnel, and then with age of youth season two coming up. I wonder if tvn is being wrong with their drama choices lately..With the shows only getting 1.5-2 at max.
On the other hand loving the fact that mystery queen still has a dedicated viewer group. This week hasn't been much great and I'm still anticipating how the main mystery regarding sul's parents, her husband and wan seung's gf will be like...Here's to hoping that the ending won't be open ended and that the drama doesn't disappoint.

TVN is overrated. It was never better than public broadcasting stations. TVN = PBS + skinship.
OCN is far too different from both TVN and JTBC and look at its shows past 3 years ratings. It easily beats JTBC. So ocn is just ocn.
Some part of audience of TVN has shifted to JTBC and Jtbc has generated enough goodwill in past 4 quarters.

Is Mystery Queen going to end at episode 16 or 20?

With the pace so far (1 case needs 3-4 episodes), if it's finishing in 2 weeks, then I am guessing Seol Ok's parents case + Wan Seung's ex case + Jang Do Jang are all related. I do hope the writer doesn't cram them up at the end and leave us with lots of gaping questions.

Tbh I honestly don't mind if the drama ends in 20 instead of 16, or 24, or you know just keep on running for few seasons like American drama. I love this show!

I can't believe MQ is ending in 2 weeks too. And this isn't just because I like this show. There's a lot of stuff left to resolve, I don't want them to rush the final episodes.

Jung So Min and Lee Joon couple is the most fun!

Lee Yu Ri is so awesome and I think she can compete with Nam Goong Min for Daesang in KBS Drama Awards 2017.

And congrats for Ruler and MBC too! They probably will run double digits onwards. But hopefully when 7 Day Queen airing, they aren't too buried by Ruler. I'm rooting for YWJ success in his terrestial drama this time.

I start to refresh Ondemandkorea site at 7:3am CT (6:30am in the fall) like mad until it shows that the newest episode is loaded. I will watch it raw first and then later in the afternoon catch it with english subs.

This show is GREAT!

Lee Yu Ri is daebak! She is badass (like javabeans said) - but she had the cutest/saddest "oh-oh-i-got-caught' look a few episodes ago!

Lee Joon playing Ahn Joon Hee the clueless/immature idol-actor is funny!

He has not figured out that he is feeling jealous when other guys approach Mi young!! So Cute!

This drama adds to a great start to my weekend.

I find this split thing a bit confusing - is it really the equivalent of saying the average US series length is about 88 episodes because of ad breaks?

0
4
reply

Required fields are marked *

Maybe because of rating?

If DOTS split up into two parts, there is a possibility that it breaks pass 40%, with one part gets 37.6% and the other part gets 40%. I think the old rating system is the average between two parts.

2
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

But it is just the ad break? I guess I'd just always assumed that when shown on Korean TV shows had ad breaks (as I'd seen some in some online streams) and it was just the norm to remove them from most streaming (obv not on DVD/Netflix).

But I guess this means many channels didn't have ad breaks during shows? And now those do they're calling it multiple parts instead of one episode? :)

0
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

I also surprise to learn that channels like MBC and SBS do not run ad breaks while their dramas airing. I think it makes sense because of the smoothness of their dramas when we see them online.

Online tvN dramas on the other hand tend to repeat some scenes perhaps due to the ad breaks. But then tvN didn't break them into multiple parts.

I understand your sentiment but I myself don't fully understand their decision. My best guess is that they need to break the dramas into two parts if they want to report the ratings separately.

Or maybe this is some kind of research to prove that, for example Subway commercials, are good for their dramas as the 2nd part after the commercials tends to get higher rating? I don't know. ?

Although jTBC is said to be new TVN, it is only on rating, not in term of quality. TVN last year had many good rating +quality products - to name few -
Signal,Dear My Friends,
The Good Wife, Drinking Solo. jTBC even their drama achieving great rating so far for 2017, sadly the quality is just so so. I rather say, jTBC last year produced a lot better drama, although not really got high rating and received the attention they deserved. I hope by the success of SWDBS and Man to Man, will bring more audiences attention to other jTBC drama after this.

Sad that CT didn't get higher rating, but I will be happy if they can at least maintain more than 2% until the end. The show is great, and all main actors are doing great in their own respective roles.

MBC is doing great for both Mond-Tues and Wed-Thurs slot, and it is it great. So Lookout and Ssam My Way will kick off on the same week (22 May) and My Sassy Girl on the following week. Curious how their rating competition will be. For now, I think it will be either Ssam My Way or My Sassy Girl to be the winner.

I can't predict how the new Mon/Tues slot ratings will look like.

I like Lee Si Young but her outing in My Beautiful Bride was quite a let down. I am hoping to get on board with Park Seo Joon because I haven't been able to appreciate him in anything so far. He was very funny in the teasers though and laughter is one of the surest ways to make me like an actor. I still can't fathom what My Sassy Girl is. Will they start with rom com and then go angsty the way saeguks do? If they really live up to the title and have Oh Yeon So as an unconventional princess turn heroine instead of a damsel in distress, I will be watching.

Park Seo Joon did better in romcom than heavier role a.k.a in Hwarang. And he really needs a good female actress as her partner to be able to bring out the best of him. From what I saw him - Baek Jin Hee (I Summon You Gold, Hwang Jung Eum (Kill Me Heal Me, She Was Pretty) , Uhm Jung Hwa (Witch Romance) - all his partners are good or better actressess than him. I love him and do think he has the potential to grow more but for the time being, he is probably quite limited.

I am not sure which one I will love for the new batch drama on Mon-Tues slot. I am going to check it all. Lookout seems to be the most interesting, and I am excited to see Kim Seul Gi in a new drama. Lee Si Young was quite good in some drama before.

Your opinion about Park Seo Joon became invalid to me when you place Hwarang and heavier role in the same sentence. Hwarang wasn't a serious sageuk or even a well written drama for that matter. If you want to see PSJ in a role where he had play something with emotional heft I would suggest watching the drama, One Warm Word.

Hwarang wasn't a serious sageuk but based on what I saw in few epi, his role was kind of serious, and could be heavier and unlike his usual role. I dropped One Warm Word so I dont have a say on his acting in that drama. I didn't give my opinion to be valid to anyone, that was just my observation based on what I watched him (I dont watch all if his drama,
but watched most of it)

1

For Wed/Thurs drama slot, I am only watching Ruler. There's going to be a lot of plot development and angst coming up in the next two weeks. If done right, there's a chance of it going over 15%. I don't think it will adversely affect the other two dramas. MQ will probably be more or less the same, perhaps it will finish stronger. SP seems pretty good too going by what I've read, so maybe it will hit above 10% too. I am more curious on how Seven Day Queen will fare because it's another saeguk, going head on with Ruler.

I am kind of the opposite, I don't watch shows for the romance. However, MDBC was an odd one. I like the beginning because it was cute and fun. The politics though were boring.

It's the other way around for me. I love more the new ruler and more interested in his equation/ power play with the citizens. Thanks so much for the link! I didn't know about this interview, and got a huge kick out of watching it. Actually, the whole darned AS I SAY show was very interesting. I've never seen anything like it. All three guests gave thought-provoking, worthwhile talks. The criminology professor who is a profiler had some very interesting things to say. As for SDW, it was heartwarming to see his return to TV, and the aloha for him on the set and in the audience.

Thank you for thinking of me. ;-)

I went back and watched SDW's performance on KING OF MASK SINGER with subtitles earlier today. Very touching. It was great to see him in fine form.

I loved AS I SAY. I binge-watched them last year to the most recent subtitled episode at that time. The professor who is also a profiler was one of my favorite buskers. She also guested in one of the Abnormal Summit episodes and she was awesome.
Now that Rebel is over, I might binge watch them again to the most recent subtitled episode ?

I dont call makjang drama is horrible, but it is up to viewers' choices, some like it some are not. I sometimes watching makjang drama because of no expectation for the plot. So less frustration. The acting is not bad, I have seen many bad acting so this is not I call as a bad acting, also it is not something great either. Dasom playing a villain has a long way to go. Anyway I am giving this show chance for Lee Ji Hoon at the most.

Yeah, you're right - due to the preemption it ends on one episode for final week.

I enjoy this show! The crime solving ajuhma + her supporting group of ragtag policemen is fun to watch.

Wonder what is going to happen to her husband (the 2 timing snake!)

Sad to see Suspicious Partner's ratings! Hoping it eventually reaches double digits - this writer and the cast deserve better! Overall, most of these ratings seem pretty dismal and unimpressive to me. Perhaps due to the elections? Even Ruler - Master of the Mask... just barely made it into the double digits, and I thought Koreans loved their sageuks.

Ruler's ratings are really strong for the first week though.... nowadays most dramas premiere with first digit ratings...To have something close to 13% in the first week is amazing.

True. To kick off with double digits is good enough especially these days, the rating is not very high. We had some drama that weren't able to be more than 5-6% during their run, and some evenngot below than 5%, so being close to 13% in premiere week is amazing. Koreans love sageuk has nothing to do with the rating these days. This is not a glorious day for sageuk anymore especially sageuk is not like how it used to be-some sageuk either become historical version of modern romcom or romance melodrama.

yeah, I see people saying that suspicious parter lost to Ruler because it's a sageuk but most sageuks are flops nowadays... they can't even hit double digits...

I would say sageuk/long drama has its own audience. Rebel been around 12% even up against defedant 28%, whisper 15%. Hwarang was bad but it still stay at 8% (against RTDK 25%) while Ms Perfect and many mbc drama only stay at 5%

0

@c Rebel is actually a good drama so it has good ratings but even Rebel had single digit ratings until after halfway through the drama. And 8% is a terrible rating, no matter how the competition is. The only successful sageuks that was successful with ratings are MBDC, and probably empress ki back in 2013. every other sageuks dramas have been getting single digit ratings even if they don't have competition. Nowadays people seem to be more invested in legal dramas like whisper and defendant.

0

Its terrible compare to what? three broadcast compete at the same time, of course there will be high and low drama. Its impossible to have all three high ratings so of course other two has to suffer. It just the way it works.

0

@c my point is that sageuks can no longer draw ratings like they used to. just look at all of the flops in the past few years, even those without competition. their ratings are no different than modern dramas. People are no longer watching sageuks just because their sageuks..

0

Rebel started with 8.9% while most of actors are not very popular while a bunch of modern dramas started with 4-5%: night light, radiant office, weightlifting and so on. Sageuk has higher rating than modern dramas, not winning but higher.

Ruler has more hype, since last year. SP only finish casting about a month before the broadcast after many changes, it still amazing that they can make it in time.

0

Rating for rebel is always double digit, except first episode n two episodes on final week of Defendant(27-28%). It is not like u said "single digit until halfway"

0

seeing whisper having the highest rating on mon-tue just makes me even more convinced that i have different preferences from mainstream korean viewers.. main point, ratings isn't everything.

Very glad that Tunnel came back to great ratings! 5.5% is their highest so far! ^^ The show continued to be a riveting, emotional, and thrilling ride. LOVE IT!

I'm also relieved that Mystery Queen maintained its good ratings. I don't want it to fall behind; I still like this show a lot. I would be okay if it was extended to 2O episodes or so. Anyway, I just want the story to be wrapped up satisfactorily within the remaining time.

YAY!!!!!!! My drama joy is BACK. It's been so long since I've been obsessed with several dramas at once and I am madly in love with Tunnel, Chicago Typewriter and Ruler: Master of the Mask. Add to that that incredible 200,000,000+ votes happening on Twitter right now for BTS to win the Billboard Awards and my joy overfloweth!!!

Yes - i started this weekend drama from 1st episode - namely for Ji Hyun Woo and Kim Ji Hoon!

One of its 2 writers is the writer of Golden Rainbow and Glamorous Temptatioin.

I watched Golden Rainbow until the makjang end! and like GR - Good Thief/Bad Thief starts with characters in their childhood. Episodes 1-4 are still in the childhood phase - i am hoping that the adult phase will start soon.

I'm probably being a bit irrelevant by commenting on this post but I find it hilarious how Koreans are finding the idea of adverts during dramas so absolutely weird that they've changed the whole format! I mean in the part of the world that I live in, we have like TEN WHOLE MINUTES of adverts after every 15 minutes of drama. At this point in time, we've simple learnt to ignore the ridiculousness and come to terms with the fact that perhaps it's the adverts that the channels are actually showing with a break of drama every once in a while!

I wonder why Chicago Typewriter is not pulling in viewers. It is one of the best drama. Have you reviewed it?

Wow R-MOM first episode rated 9% that's crazy and SP is not bad. But why are they airing on the same days?!?I don't want rating competition between my two favourite dramas ?
