Hi Beanies !

Only a week and I will be free from exams :D
I'm planning to study in Germany for a year and I have a question for Beanies living there : are dramas available on viki or do you watch them on other sites ?

Happy Friday :D

Hey mango! I live in Germany. Viki is available, but many shows are not licensed for Germany. Luckily I am QC, so I get to watch every show. For old kdramas or jdoramas, I go for sites such as dramacool...

I may sound dumb but what is QC ? I won't be too lost since many show are licensed in my country too. Sad reality haha. Thank for the information :D

Qualified Contributor. Meaning @gulsan contributing in subtitling dramas in viki.

Thanks I learned something great today ^^

a QC is a 'qualified contributor' which is a status you can reach by volunteering either as a video segmenter or subtitler. Subtitling is much more straightforward if you're a non-English subber, because the majority of other languages sub from English, so it only requires English fluency on top of your native language, whereas English subbing requires Korean fluency. Segmenting is a better bet if you're only English-fluent. You need to accrue 3000 segments or lines subbed to reach QC status, and after that, the viki world is your playground!

Heh, are you a Dalja's Spring fan too? I find that people often overlook it, but it's such a neat drama and one of the few noona romances I like (I don't generally gravitate towards those). Has a great OST too.

Definitely! I've always wondered why it's so overlooked when for me it's the rom-com to beat.

The OST was wonderful, even just the BGMs.

Loved Dal Ja's Spring.....along with What's up, Fox. They are my two favorite Noona romances....very real and grounded in family and the day-to-day minutiae. I confess I went on a huge Lee Min ki binge after finishing it.

OT week 12. I can’t believe I’ve been active on this weekly foray down the rabbit hole of obscure Asian dramas for three months now. I’ve been enjoying my time here; it is such a great distraction from the stresses of work and life.

I finished Master’s Sun, and what a great little drama. So funny, and who would have thunk the noble idiot would be the girl? I read up on So Ji Sub as I was already familiar with the other players in this, and he’s been pretty prolific—and was born the same year I was, so that’s kind of cool. I see he’s died a couple times in dramas which was more than a little humorous in my mind, and if you’ve happened to see the 31 memes that I made in all my spare time, a couple of them may have been dedicated to him. LOL.

And then there was Man to Man, which I just watched the 1st episode, and now will patiently wait for the first eight to come out on Netflix. Goodness me, Park Hae Jin has the tallest nose I’ve ever seen on an Asian man, which, according to my husband, “is why they invented plastic surgery.” And I really think that he should have a show where he is the sole lead--no bromance, no second lead, no romantic interest (maybe a one-night stand or two). Put him in a suit or turtleneck and I’d watch him knitting sweaters for the homeless every week.

I’ve been debating what story to share this week, because one is definitely for the mature audience, and after seeing all the memes that have been posted, I’m gathering that there are not just a few students and minors on this site. Well, here it goes anyway, but I’m warning you, there may be some innuendoes coming…
So a certain married couple may have had this discussion, which may be misconstrued as foreplay…

Wife: Honey, why are you texting in bed, at this hour?

Husband: I’m not texting, I’m looking for a wet stone.

Wife: Oh, a wet stone? That makes much more sense. *not really, it makes no sense* *stop reading now if you want to keep your innocence.*

Wife: Is it that thing you sharpen your sword on? *DANGER, DANGER* If that’s the case, I have a wet stone you could use.

Husband: *snickering now*

Wife: Oh, this reminds me. You know on that Dramabeans site with the Goblin recaps? There was a whole series of commenters theorizing why Eun Tak couldn’t touch or pull out the sword initially. Several said it was because she was “underage.” Ha!

*Punchline coming, Don’t say I didn’t warn you!*

Husband: Hilarious. Now, get over here and wet my sword.

Moral of the story: Yes, people still have sex after being married for 15 years--get over it.

2nd Moral: Goblin can be worked into any conversation.

3rd Moral: A “wet stone” is what people actually sharpen knives with—I know you were going to look it up.

Ally, really only 12 weeks? Girl, I feel like you're a Founding Beanie! LOLOL this week's story is killer (although the spelling geek in me is thinking it's a 'whetstone' to be specific). Surely you can make that show up in a meme, right? ?

Now you've given me a plastic surgery question, I thought it was that people were correcting broad noses trying to get higher noses, is that wrong? Or maybe it's just smaller noses. At any rate, I'm with you on loving PHJ and his high-flying nose whatever he does even if it's knitting (although I think I'd require some pretty emotional yarn to interact with him ?).

1

reply

Required fields are marked *

I don't think it's just a matter of making their noses thinner, their main goal is to make the bridge look higher. You'll notice that they highlight and contour their noses in a way that makes the nose bridge appear taller.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

Yes, I actually meant what you said! Although we do see a lot of ski-jump noses as well, a few of the most famous ones appear from childhood photos to be natural-born (like PHS, LJS). Or there's Kim Hyun Joong, who I think changed a (maybe ps) swoopy nose to a high-bridge nose.

0

Required fields are marked *

lol @ emotional yarn. Now my overactive imagination is conjuring an image of him tearing up while knitting with a roll of pretty emotional yarn. Then he wipes the snot off his high-flying nose. ???

1

Required fields are marked *

But not on the yarn, the yarn is far too volatile to wipe snot on!

0

Required fields are marked *

loopymango.com is where to go for the (pretty) emotional yarn, btw (which in my mind must be variegated). And they even have a kit named "Her Beanie", available in multiple colors. LOL, siiiigh, imagine watching PHJ knit you a beanie. No swords or stones needed, Ally, I think my ovaries just exploded ??

HAHAHA. Too funny. I think we should ask the dramagods for this drama.

0

lol @bbstl what sorcery have you done! ^__^

I have no idea how to spell it, I've never looked for one! For some reason, I think you put water on it before you sharpen it which is why I thought "wet" would be the spelling, but you learn something new every day! I turned in my last memes just now. Even though I don't look like it, I do work sometimes, so just watching from the sidelines after today. And on noses, yes, they are getting surgery to get that high PHJ nose, which is what I was referring to.

Knitting, crocheting, weaving baskets, clipping his toenails---any of the above, I would probably watch if he were doing it. :)

Finally I got around to watch Coin Locker Girl. (I know!! Better late than never, though.) It's fascinating to watch Kim Go-eun, Lee Soo-kyung, and Go Kyung-pyo played a very different character than what I usually see in their drama. And Kim Go-eun's little what-could-have-been loveline with Park Bo-gum makes me want to see them as a romantic pairing in upcoming drama.

Drama Gods, you read this, right??

Go kyungpyo often plays/played the nice guy in dramaland if not the funny sidekick so its nice to see him play a diff char. And yes to that PBG-KGE romcom. They had cute chemistry tgt.

I cannot help but imagine how Moonlight would have been if it were Go Eun and Bo Gum as leads!!! It was in April 2016. In an episode in Celeb Bros. I've added the link in a reply below. Well, this could be termed as speculation on my part, but also in Ep. 4 of S4 in that Show JS tells tells about NJH's ideal type who is tall, ptetty and looks kind. Uncannily similar to LSK. Also, interestingly when he says this NJH gets all flustered and looks like he wants to run away.
So I think there was definitely something going on, well before WFKBJ was flimed.

um... I can´t remember what I was gonna say - oh! Meme-making is addicting, but I have also reached my ceiling. I feel like whatever I think of now will no longer be funny and there is no point.

watching: Chicago Typewriter, Radiant Office, started Perfect Wife to discover Mari and Uncle from Shopping King Louie, oh my goodness, and with Yoon Sang Hyun it is almost a third of SKL in the same drama again! How can they contain themselves? It´s so good to see all of them on the same screen I just can´t.

Radiant Office - I don´t mind the slowness and focus. Some tiny things still give so much you can sense a lot of love floating in the air no words necessary. but I am worried for Ki Taek, and I want Ji Na to find love and happiness as well.

ok gotta go see you on the 1st of may

Happy Friday, fellow beanies! A week went by so quickly. Time passing by makes me anxious as well as everything else lmao. Have lots of free time these days so ive mostly been busy with dramas, movies and RM.

Shikaku Tantei - Tori is cute. Fun premise. Fun ensemble. Sadly not cracky enough.

Man To Man - Nothing groundbreaking but ridiculously funny. Hope it stays good. PSW is so extra i luff him.

Super Family - Episode count scares me but absolutely hilarious with a touch of warmth. This is my kinda thing.

I Saw The Devil - CMS will forever haunt me. I could handle the gore. But CMS smashing the car windows made my heart jump. Satisfying revenge thriller.

Coin Locker Girl - I love KGE. And KHS just rocks. She has this poker face on but I feel a multitude of emotions. Idk how she does it.

Also very very excited for CRIME SCENE 3. Today is the day ive been waiting for. So so ready for this. Jtbc granted my xmas wishes(this and AoY2) so i love them now. I can already feel the greatness from afar lol.

Long time lurker, first time commenter!

I am planning on catching up on Liar and His Lover and Chicago Typewriter this weekend, both of which I love but fell behind on. I'm also watching the Taiwanese drama Marry Me or Not, which I actually like a lot. The leads are golden, all the other characters and their storylines are meh to annoying. But I'm hooked :) I'm also debating on starting Rebel even though I clearly can't keep up as it is.

I am still spazzing about the Weightlifting Fairy couple being real! They are so cute together and seem so happy. I went back and watch the BTS for a few of the later episodes, and they really don't even try to hide it. I also saw the DVD commentary pics that came out - too adorable!

I am catching up with Mystery Queen, and now at epi 7. But am I the only one found this drama quite boring? I like the idea of ahjumma detective, but are all police in this show just strong physically, but no brain? And what happened with Lee Won Geun's character. I know he is still young and has a lot to learn, but when it comes to the job and responsibility, age is not an excuse. For eg in the case of underwear thief, he just said if Ms Yoo is here, she will already solve it. Look, you are police, isnt it your job to find it? Same goes to Kwon Sang Woo's character. I know Seol Ok is the centre of this drama, but it is unnecessary to make other characters stupid. I will watch until epi 8, but for now it seems like I will drop it. The investigation of the cases in this drama weren't that interesting.

Hi Sera, been a while! Yes, I've watched till episode 5, and never quite got round to starting episode 6. I love the idea of the ahjumma detective, but the show isn't really hitting the right spots for me either - perhaps for the same reasons you've mentioned ? Like what Lee Won Geun's character said?
Speaking of who, this is my first time watching Lee Won Geun in anything and I gotta say - the boy has a cute smile. That's about all I got from this show.

OK i am done watching epi 8, and I am still undecided to continue watch it or not. Maybe will binge watch after it finished, maybe yes maybe no. Lee Won Geun was cute in Sassy Go Go with Eun Ji, i think that drama was pretty good and enjoyable, Chae Soo Bin also shined a lot in that drama. He is like doing nothing in this drama and now epi 8 already. I dont know if out of sudden he becomes so helpful later..

Heh expecting logic from a kdrama. Heroine shines extra in the presense of dumb males. You start to think she is some kind of genius but reality is far too different. This goes well with the theme of the show. Outer social appearances and own prejudices fooling everyone. From DIL to MIL to Husband to Friend to Police.
Also, None of them look interested in their own job.

Huh, I didn't find the men stupid. I just see it as the men are intelligent in their own ways. Ha Wan-Seung operates more on the old-school rely on your gut police work, but in the various cases he was picking-up on things and coming to correct conclusions himself. He was just coming to those conclusions in different ways. He relies more on his senses while she relies more on facts and data and deducing. Like the case with the murderer, he was sure the Grandpa had something he was hiding and there was more to him. I personally just see it as different forms of intelligence.

Chief Hong is just new and untested and he has relied on Yoo Seol-Ok since he first started working. He has not had a chance to stretch his own legs because of that. I think he will prove an able police officer if he let himself not rely so heavily on Seol-Ok.

Maybe i was expected it will be great teamwork between the three main leads, so far I didnt see it. It looks like only Seol Ok doing a lot of works, the male leads are seems not that interested with works. I agree with your points on Wan Seung but his ways are not that convincing in my eyes. He didnt display his intelligence at what we thought he has. But his attitude started to become better in recent episodes. Chief Hong still not developing, he is just like a puppy who is lost after Seol Ok no longer there. Even he is new, I was expecting to see he stands on his own. Maybe I was expecting everyone is quite smart because this drama will be more entertaining in such way.

I think that makes most people watching this drama is the interaction between Seol Ok and Wan Seung. Their bickering is so much fun.
This is not the type of heavy criminal drama that commonly seen on cable channels. This is a light drama that doesn't need to think much when watching it. I like humor that used in this drama
Wan Seung if I'm not mistakenly is assigned in the unit that related to the drug case, probably that's why he isn't used to criminal cases, but his instinct that able to smell the strange things is an advantage indeed.
A lot of supporting and side characters are less explored (This makes me miss Chef Kim). Like, what is the role of Officer Hong now after Wan seung and Seol Ok work together well? It's a pity, because most the characters in this drama are still likable nothing is too evil to date.
But still I like this drama, the contents are quite fresh, these nicely shoot and direct plus the atmosphere and background music are fine.
But I wouldn't recommend it on who likes fast plot, one case spends more than two episodes to be solved. Need patience to watch it.

Yes, I am a little dissatisfied with how the police are portrayed in this show too. They seem so stupid when compared to SO. I expect them to be just as smart as SO. I don't understand why the police has to be dumbed down just so that SO would shine through.

hahaha It's hilarious how I've finished 8 episodes and STILL can't decide if I like this drama or not. I've been noticing how LWG's character relies on her for everything too! She has to explain everything to him and he has a lightbulb moment every time she does so, which doesn't do much to credit him as an officer. That's why the hero was great though, casue he admits (grudgingly) that she might know her stuff but he tries to do it himself too. It kind of feels stagnant now though. I only pretty much tune in to see them bicker

Hi guys, Happy OT! I just accidentally discovered there's a Pop-up KFashion thing going on at Nordstrom online right now, I recommend checking it out! I'm very late to the party as it's been running since March and ends May 7th. It includes not just fashion but toys and house stuff and novelties (kimbap hankie? Bought it! For a friend, of course!). I love some of the clothes and shoes, too bad I'm not younger, thinner and richer ?

I have to say MSR is better to me by far....than Noble my Love. I get the thing about the arm and wrist grabbing thing being hella annoying... I wish they would just go 'kaja' and walk away while expecting (trusting) the one they addressed to follow... but the Heroine Song Ji Eun in MSR doesn't allow herself to get bossed around through and through... she backtalks sometimes and puts the hero in his place... she has all the control in whatever has gone on thus far cos her antics made the dude fall in deep without a clue as to how or why.... lol

Basically I think the arm and wrist grabs are kdramas' ways of getting the adrenaline pumping sometimes in a tense moment.

Lastly the Noble my Love guy...same actor here...is called Sung Hoon ... I'll say he's really awesome at these types of roles. I'd say he definitely has the look down pat... of a romantic hero...somehow rugged not at all flowery...lots of sex appeal... I don't get that same vibe at all from at least 50% of kdrama actors...thanks to all that chastity probably...hehe.

He hasn't really been typecast though and has done other roles too. But he is very good at this type.

Just wanted to say that you guys have been great at feeding into my kdrama addiction, and I say that with the greatest affection. I had been trying to get my brother (who loves any and all TV shows) to watch some, but to no avail and been laughed at for my efforts. Well I'm happy to say that I've finally hooked him with Signal ( he's still horrified with the ending though) . We're watching liar game now, and he's already into it. Never been happier. So any more show suggestions for someone who loves mystery and thriller shows?

For non-OCN show (which usually less violent), I'd recommend
-I Remember You
-Ghost / Phantom
-Joseon X-Files (If he doesn't mind sageuk)

You should be happy that your brother used pretty soft words on asian content.

Question for the OT: Why is there a mandatory separation period at the end of most K-dramas of the romance genre? Strong Woman Do Bong Soon was amongst the few that didn't have it (thank god) but I've been wondering if it's a cultural thing? Going abroad to study for example is a very common excuse.

5

Required fields are marked *

I absolutely hate that and it's in every drama, even the good ones, except when it isn't.

I think it is just there as both a time filler and to prove that their love is so strong, they can survive a separation that often lasts longer than the relationship. Also, most of these couples don't even communicate while separated even though they totally could.

I also wonder if it's there so often because a lot of relationships end in Korea when the guy has to do his mandatory enlistment for two years so this is actually something they care about. Will the relationship survive that separation?

Maybe if they didn't act all surprised by it, I'd be okay? Then again, maybe not. The usual tropes being turned inside-out in WFKBJ were so much fun. I'm so happy for the two of them being together, by the way!

Happy friday beanies!

I was more on the social media this week to relieve the stress that my internship (i'm on my way for a career change ) provoked massively and tried to follow k-drama fans on twitter and instagram but failed miserably???

I'm sure i'm missing something, maybe because i'm not very familiar with those tools : i just wanted fresh news about my favourites actors (lastly OCN Voice Cast) but people kept switching their public account to private ( i didn't interact with anyone just followed them).

I'm confused: aren't social medias meant to be public? Why keep an account private when all your discussions are about k-dramas favourites actors or idols, and you're already using a pseudonym?

Seems to be a lot of secrets for nothing...

I don't get this idea of talking only to your group??? It makes sense on facebook where you can have private groups but not on twitter, which was made to share infos and to provoke public reactions....
I thought people were aware of this when they chose to post on a social media...

I think your idea of how to use twitter and theirs is very different... but don't stress too much about it if they change their account to private. I know a lot of drama accounts that have gone private, stayed private, or switches between public and private.

It's usually because things are so easy to take out of context online, especially with twitter where it's easy to retweet/reshare something. Sometimes, one of your tweets get RTed and taken out of context and the next thing you know, there are a thousand fangirls fighting on your feed. It's really tiring once you've been on there for so long.

If you just want kdrama news (aside from Dramabeans *cough*shamelesspromotion*cough*) try https://twitter.com/shuralou and https://twitter.com/kdrama_news I follow those two because they're up to date and also "clean". shuralou's is a personal account but she's like a non-trashy Dispatch with how fast she updates things. :D She also RTs a lot of accounts so sometimes that's how I find the special fan sites for actors/actresses I want to "twitter stalk" further.

Thank you for your answer Mary! You're probably right: we're not on the same page when it comes to use social media. I wasn't looking only for news but for fandoms discussions. Coming from tumblr where people think as themselves a part of a fandom and try to reach the other parts, i'm used to fans wanting to be popular and therefore being happy about new followers. But k-drama fans are very few on tumblr and they don't stick to a drama very long. I thought twitter was different but that's ok!
Thanks a lot too for the links.:) I didn't know Shura's account and i'm happy that she doesn't seem to by shy about sharing her thoughts honestly.
If you have time, i have a last technical question: is there a thread on DB where we can ask our questions about the new goodies, when we don't get how to use them?

But that's not without buckets of tears shedding, hair pulling and ships sinking - twice at that! Now, I am trying to finish all the three versions of Nodame Cantabile. I am getting sucked in by Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms. Not crazily addicted yet but I think it's because I have not reached that stage of the drama. Why are C dramas >50 eps long?

I realized I haven't watched any Korean fantasy saeguk except for Mirror of the Witch which I loved in the beginning. For Gu Family Book, I only remember Choi Jin Hyuk's part. I thought the rest was quite awful. It struck me that the mythical creatures in both Chinese and Korean folklore are quite similar. The Nine Tailed Fox or gumiho is definitely one of them. What's the explanation? I don't want to assume most things originate from the Chinese.

One thing good about watching C saeguks is that you don't get your moment spoiled by a kpop song. The instrumentals in Ten Miles are so good and I've been listening to the osts on loop. In the same way, I appreciate the great music in Rebel.

I absolutely loved Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms. It's the only cdrama I've seen. I didn't really start getting into it until about mid-teens when the romance starts picking up. It was good before then, but that's when the addiction started. And the drama is one of the longest dramas I've seen, but I never felt a moment was spent on fillers or that it ever dragged. When I hit episode 48 I was sad to know I only had 10 episodes left.

Hello all:

Not much happening in my neck o' the woods. Writing, writing, writing. That's about it. Ooh, and teaching English to refugees and migrants in the Albany area.

I'm in kdrama heaven! so much so that I can actually drop certain dramas that aren't particularly satisfying. So, dropped: Radiant Office which I dropped because it felt relentlessly grim. Weirdly, I like grim. But for some reason, I couldn't get connected to the main character..and I like this actress. Oh well. Also dropped: Whisper. I love a good scheming/counter-scheming makjang. But this is one of those times when the addition of a romance felt just plain weird. The story no longer feels organic to me.

My fave drama now is: Mystery Queen. Perfect blend of humor, thriller, makjang, and romance. The writer is a master(mistress?) of natural humor, natural relationship-building. There's something very adult about this story. I so don't like waiting for the heroine to discover that her marriage is cold and her hubby unsupportive but in this case, I'm kinda hoping for her divorce. That will probably involve a time jump or her husband dying. Cause I can't see Ahjumma leaving her only "family." This is the only drama where I feel unsure about what the ending will be.

Am loving Rebel: Ooh, that scene where Eorinnie's memory returned! Hoping Gil Dong doesn't die. Will see.

My third fave is: Chicago Typewriter. Because Yoo Ah In can do no wrong. I have no idea where this is going. Who betrayed who in the past? Am hoping to see some of the other current characters in the past. For instance, was hero's half-brother (the manuscript thief) a big bad back in the day? Or was his step-mother an enemy in the past? I kinda want this story to go full-on reincarnational and show all sorts of permutations of relationships.

My fourth fave is Tunnel. Am hoping it doesn't dwindle into father/daughter makjang. Basically, I want hero to return to the past and to have to find the bad guys on his own. So i'm kinda waiting for a time jump backward and for him to reverse deaths, relationships, etc.

Other than that, just chilling! Have a great weekend, all.
Am also watching Dr Qin and Return of Silver Tongue.

I don't think Tunnel will go down the father/daughter makjang route. It's not that kind of drama, and besides, I don't think it has time. There are still so many mysteries to solve.

I have a question for the seasoned beanies (or korean speakers :)): I was watching Noble, my love and (spoiler!)

when they did that contract, they were calling each other "dominant" and "submissive" - Is that something that's normal in korean contracts? Or is that a translation error?

It was so strange to me...

0

Required fields are marked *

In my opinion, these dominant/ submissive terms are something like in the Fifty Shades of Grey. For me this is slavery contract, or maybe sex slavery contract. But Noble My Love didnt go that extreme. Based on my understanding contract in this drama like Dating Contract or something like that. Hero is rich and if my memory serves me right, the heroine was short of money/ in debt, so the hero offering money and they sign such contract - heroine needs to oblige /submit with whatever hero wants.

I can't remember if they used that exact term in the drama or is it just how the subs were written..?

Yes! LOL I remember it shocking me too. I'd lean more towards the actual word for master/slave but maybe the subbers thought that was too servile so they went with dominant/submissive to capture the lovers aspect of it? Or maybe Sung Swoon just making them think naughty things. *tsk tsk tsk*

I mostly watch the wacky jdoramas :D but this is one of the non-wacky ones: http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Soratobu_Kouhoushitsu
workplace + a bit of romance (just a tiiiiiiiiiiny bit, jdoramas are stingy on romance LOL) + life lessons mixed in

I don't know if it's okay to recommend this after the scandal with the maknae PD dying, but Drinking Solo is similar to Radiant Office (not just because of Ha Sukjin) so maybe you'll like Drinking Solo too?

I'm sorry my recommendations are a bit old. Heh~

What did you like about Producers? Just the story? Or the weird format? Or certain actors or actresses?

Hey guys, this is my first time here in open thread, hope you all doing well. So I'm taking a break from k-dramas and watched an amercian series after my brother suggested it, it's 13 reasons why, I just finished the last episode and I'm basically a wreck, I can't get my thoughts together I don't know what to say about it, what i know is that i cried soo much in the last three episodes. Will I find anyone among you who watched it ??,

Hello beanies!

Moon Lovers revisited - I realized as I am rewatching Moon Lovers Scarlet Heart Ryeo that I didn’t watch it very carefully the first time. I must have been blinded by the dazzling beauty on the screen and didn’t follow the many undertones to the story. For instance, episode 9 is a turning point for Prince 4 and Prince 8. Prince 4 can now show his face and calls the king “Father” for the first time. Prince 8 starts to care about opportunity and with his sister, Princess I’m-In-It-For-Me, at his side constantly vying for their family’s position he takes notice of who stands in his way. I liked IU’s acting the first time around, but I really girlcrush her. “People do not change for others” ~ Court Lady Oh. She should have won an Oscar for her performance.

Liar Lover – easy to watch, k-fluff, love Hyun Woo, Joy isn’t bad, either.
My Father is Strange - Poor Mi Young, her life is filled with drama and yet she is the least dramatic of them all. No matter what, I’m on Mi Young’s side. I guess Dad’s identity theft is pretty serious, but Mom’s lie is going to fly when it hits. Lee Joon is a doll – double stuffed lions to flank his bed at the Byuns, ha! Recaps at http://www.cimiart.wordpress.com

I Can See Your Voice with Super Junior - Heechul kept saying he was 500% positive - what a riot! He is such an entertainment wanderer. (Did anyone see him on WGM Global? Sheesh-chul). I always cheer for the real singers who get chosen as tone deafs to be able to show their talents on stage.

Man to Man – Park Hae Jin and park Sung Woong are hilarious together. Hae Jin is the perfect emotionless, all business, sharp-jawed secret agent. I picture Sung Woong being the same way in RL. Man to Man is very well produced, lots of action, and high quality all around.

It's such a chilly, windy day today – more coffee and kdramas!

Hey Beanies! Hope you had a good week.. I was looking forward to the weekend. Alas, Tunnel, the drama I was most looking forward to, got pre-empted.. Now my weekend is looking quite dull without the dose of adrenaline that usually accompanies Tunnel. I guess this is fate's way of forcing me to study since I have one last exam in a week.. Good morning everyone and happy Friday!

Not much going on for me. I was out from work yesterday due to being sick so decided to start a new drama (I haven't watched anything since I finished Bromance last week). I have been listening to true crime podcasts at work so I was feeling like a procedural kdrama. So I started watching Mystery Queen and I LOVE it. It is so good! I am really sad I started watching this before it finished because I binge watched the first 6 episodes yesterday and I cannot wait for the series to be done. I am loving both main characters and I love the reversal of the woman being the brains of the group and the one the men rely on. Kwon Sang-Woo was an unknown to me, not seeing anything he has been in before, but he is doing an excellent job. So is Choi Gang-Hee, but I've liked her since Protect the Boss. I was in a slump but this one has certainly yanked me out. Just wish all 16 episodes were out! This is why I don't watch dramas until they are completed.

I've been out for so long that time flies by really fast! The only dramas that I'm watching at the moment is Goong, Hotel King, and Chicago Typewriter. But holy macaroni.. I'm currently on episode 23 of Goong and I want to tear my hair out. As cute as CK and SG are, the politics along with the love triangles and misunderstandings makes me wanna bang my head against a wall.

Hotel King reminds me of twilight in a way with LDW being the pouty but stoic Edward and LDH being the damsel in distress who we know as Bella that eventually has her happy ever after.

I am watching Hotel King too. I am kind of stuck at episode 15 and I am unsure if I will finish it. The female lead has not shown much growth. I really like the idea of the drama being set in the hotel and everything happening in the same location. That makes the drama cohesive despite having, what seems to me, an unusually large cast and so many side stories.

Princess Hours story start to drag from 11th episode itself. I googled and found the show was extended. heh. I like it the 1st time and few weeks ago i was browsing Youtube and YT recommended me several of Goong's scenes. I tried to watch them but they looked so old and foolish that i right away moved to other content. That shows how poorly the show did acting wise as well as story wise.

I've been reading Dramabeans since I discovered kdramas about a year ago but I finally decided to join in the fun and start commenting.

Subway is a thing I never would've tried if not for it showing up everywhere in kdramas. But don't tell the Subway execs that or they'll put themselves in even MORE dramas!

There are kdrama sayings that I now say which I hadn't said before. Like, "You worked hard," 'As if," "Just so you know," and "Daebak" - which is a foot in to talk about kdramas.

Oh, and I use Korean face masks regularly. They are popular in a few stores now (or online).

And finger hearts or the cutie \/ in pictures - I do it all the time now! It's all so happy and cheerful.

Fighting! (another thing added to my vocab0 :)

Fortunately for me, just when i started to get hooked into kdrama about 8 years ago - my neighborhood started to get more Korean! The supermarket Hmart opened about 3 miles away and then a slew of other Korean businesses (including cafes and restaurants and karaoke) opened not long after.

So I get banchan from Hmart and eat with my rice and i get my spicy tofu soup at the restaurant!

I do find myself saying Korean phases when i am at home (i live by myself) - but find myself asking colleagues at work - wey-o in place of why?

I also discovered kpop from kdrama - so i have been listening to kpop - ftisland, big bang, beast/highlight and recently bts (because of V from Hwarang)!

2

Required fields are marked *

Yes :). Fortunately for me my neighborhood is very Korean. Within a two mile radius from where I live we have about 4 Korean markets, Korean restaurants and even churches. I tried Kimchi for the first time about 4 years ago. I have tried different kinds of ramen, also now whenever I make ramen I always towards the end put a beaten egg in it. I discovered my love for dried seaweed, I love Kimbap, I also love Peperos and Korean ice cream (melona bars, samanco, and this milkshake in a bag are my favorites). I have tried Melon milk, matcha coffee and bubble tea. I have started to love red bean paste, I have also made Omurice and Korean sweet pancakes. In terms of no food items, I bought and use, sometimes just when I eat ramen which is not as often, metal chopsticks, I use the masks, and also the Korean exfoliating mitt, which works amazingly. Anyway at this point I think that the owner of the Korean market recognizes me by now, lol.

Depends on what I have :). I would sometimes put corn, broccoli or celery cut in small pieces. In the beginning I use to experiment, lol. But definitely try it with corn, some dry or fresh green onion and that beaten egg is really good. There are tons of recipes out there if you want to search, I still have many I want to try in particular the one with american cheese, I have heard good things about it.

For the egg you can also fry an egg in a pan and after the ramen is done and in a bowl just put it on top, then break the yolk. This is also pretty good.

Sometimes I add cheese to ramen too, put it in when it's really hot so it's half melted. Plus egg of course, so good! This also helps to reduce the spiciness, I found some brands too spicy.

It's no surprise that my first ever kdrama was Let's Eat - I'm a massive foodie! ? But the thing that gets me every time is when I see people order takeout jjajangmyeon - it makes me want some SO BAD. The way people slurp it up with such gusto while making sounds of deliciousness fills me with major food envy. I had my first proper bowl of the stuff 2 years ago when I visited Seoul and I loved it so much I brought back half a suitcase of the microwave packets with me! Sadly they have run out by now and I'm a looooong away from the closest Korean supermarket :(

Just popping in to say how much I LOVE Rebel and everything it's turned out to be so far (setting aside the silly who's-the-real-sister bit).

I really do wish it had higher ratings in Korea, if nothing else because hit dramas tend to fuel trends, and I could do with intelligently written and fleshed out characters, casting with an actual eye to talent instead of how many advertisement deals an actor can bring in, and excellent music that actually fits the mood of the drama and is appropriately used, becoming things that catch on in the kdrama industry. (I'm still too scarred by the utter awfulness of the Moon Lovers OST and the out-of-place songs, to not appreciate it when a drama does everything right in that department)

Oh, and a sageuk drama where all of our heroes are actual commoners and not secret nobility/royalty, or aspiring to get close to it! That's a first.

Required fields are marked *

I've gotten behind on this one. I liked the initial episodes a lot, especially the way they critically examined how ideology shapes social structure and I agree that the music is glorious. However, by the time I hit episode 20 it felt like the plot was spinning its wheels and it was taking a long time to get to actual narrative payoffs. I may pick it up again though if it's gotten over that hump.

I was getting bored in the middle but after epi 20 I think it picked up again. Probably you can binge watch the last 10 epi after it finishes. It will be more satisfying imo.

I'd say episodes 21 and 22 are actually where it all starts to come together, so maybe you could pick it back up? I definitely understand that some aspects of the plot can be an irritant, I was sick of the Eorini bait-and-switch several weeks ago and still don't understand why they had that plot in the first place. But it's over now, and we seem to be getting to the final arc, which I love so far.

I too wished that Rebel could get higher ratings (for all the good reasons that you mention), but I think I shouldn't be greedy considering it's Yoon Kyun Sang and Chae Soo Bin's first drama as the lead. People might won't even consider to watch it when they first heard about the lead actors' name

Plus (serious) sageuk is not everyone's cup of tea, it doesn't help that Rebel isn't a romance-centred drama (though it would be very much satisfying and rewarding when they finally showed us some Gil Ryung couple moments)

So, 12-13% rating is relatively good for them. Oh, and if I don't being mistaken, Rebel is the first 2017 MBC drama which doesn't get the last place in weekday drama slot, isn't it?

(Sorry for the long *probably unnecessary* post. I just need a place to spill out my thoughts)

Happy Friday Beanies (and to our fellow beanies on the other side of the world - a GREAT 3 day weekend!! Happy May day!)

Downloaded a bunch of kdramas so that i can watch on my tablet during LONG airplane ride from DWF to Singapore for annual family visit. While travelling and visiting:

1) Finished marathoning "Return of Iljimae/Moon River" featuring Jung Il Woo and Yoon Jin Seo and the very young Lee Hyun Woo! - enjoyed all 24 episodes - made the airplane ride enjoyable!! This show kept me engaged through all the episodes. It took like 7 episodes to set up the story - but it was worth it! The action/fighting scenes were nicely done - Chinese, Japanese and Korean martial arts - daebak! Good story - but i wanted a better ending for Chief and mother!

2) Also started watching "Another Oh Hae Young" - currently at episode 11 (the amount of drinking the Noona did here - i worry for her liver!)

3) Also downloaded Signal - but have to get into proper 'zone' to watch this!

4) Currently watching:
Queen of Mystery - Different Sleuthing methods - pretty cool!

Man to Man - Zany show - action and bromance - fun!

Father is Strange - Oh the fun begins now that foot actor Ahn Joong Hee has arrived at his "father's" (along with Al his pet turtle!)

I will take care of you Father! - Final Stretch! Our 2 lovebirds who had found love and new identities are finally getting back together.

You are too much - i figured out that this is the theme of the show and that ALL the characters of the show are TRULY TOO MUCH! This show is like watching a slow train wreck!

Looking forward to Suspicious Partner (Ji Chang Wook & Nam Ji Hyun ) and Third Rate My Way (Park Seo Joon & Kim Ji Won ).

Also looking forward to "Good Thief, Bad Thief" (Ji Hyun Woo and Kim Ji Hoon) to follow Father, I will take care of you. Sounds like Police Squad 38/Iljimae mash up with an element of Yuna Street!

I've been in a bit of a drama slump after goblin. I mean do bong soon was great, but it wasnt enough to fill the gap in my heart. Tried Liar and the lover but i found i just couldnt get into it. Then i picked up Chicago Typewriter last weekend. I LOVE IT. the retro tone is so spot on and im loving the slight undercurrent of melancholy. My heart already hurts for our three idealistic youths from the 1930s who are going to meet, I'm guessing, a very tragic end. What i'm not able to get my head around is Yoo Ah In's shouty-ness (if that's a word). I get that when he's scared he reacts by getting angry but the OTTness of his reactions is getting old. The part where he shouts at Jin Oh but Seol thinks its for her i thought was a bit odd. Nobody, knowing they were seeing someone nobody else could would out themselves that way. I guess the drama really wants us to believe hes coming unhinged but i'm not buying it. In contrast the quietly dignified anger and sorrow he displayed in the scene with Sr Baek (sonsengnim) was so beautiful - my heart broke from him. I guess this means my slump is over!!!

Hi Beanies :)!!
Since I have been missing the recaps of Tunnel because I was behind I would like to comment on just how perfect Choi Jin-Hyuk's casting was for this drama. The first and only role I have seen him in from beginning to end was in the beginning of "Gu family Book" After that I stopped paying attention to him, not because he wasn't a good actor but because his next projects didn't really gather my attention. Now that I am watching episode 10 I can say that he is now on my list of actors to watch out for. He has done an excellent and believable job in expressing the emotions of a person going through what his character is going through. He conveys a lot of expressions with his eyes and I love when actors are able to do that, another example of this would be Lee Dong Wook.
In other things this week I saw the Japanese movie "The Liar and His Lover" and "If Cats Disappeared From the World" I love Takeru Satoh and since I am waiting for his next project, the live action movie "Ajin: Demi-Human" which I loved the anime, I decided to have a mini marathon of his movies. I have yet to start watching the Korean drama "The Liar and His Lover" but I have heard good reviews so I will eventually get to it. I read comments of people who were upset with the remake because the feel was different. The movie is more somber in terms of colors and tone, while the Korean drama looks colorful and cheery, two polar opposites. But I know that when it comes to angst even if the scenery looks cheerful Korean dramas tend to do it right.
I would love to see a Korean drama remake of "If Cats Disappeared from The World" maybe even a 4 episode mini drama. However the story can be made longer if done right.
Anyway, hope you beanies have a great Friday and weekend :)

It's actually a shame that many fans of the Japanese movie Liar and his Lover judged the Korean version way too early. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but so far, I am really enjoying it as it is a very thoughtful show and character arcs are not stereotyped. The writing is seriously well thought out, one episode you get frustrated by a character but by the next episode they'd show you enough to change camps, and the conflicts were not overstretched. It really reminds me of Weightlifting Fairy.

Currently following My secret Romance and Radiant Office. Find the former watchable and so far the guy didnt cross my jerk-limit, so probably gonna continue watching it. But seriously I found that the 2nd lead guy is cute and dependable and always there for the heroin, why oh why Drama God you always make the best guy as second lead, I'm so mad.

Tried to watch new jdrama starring kamenashi and yamapi but ehhh didnt work for me, too much coincidences and too unlogical to follow through. Which is funny because I can handle my secret romance but not this one, I wonder what's missing.

Speaking of coincidences, sorry I need to get this out of my chest, so sorry strangers all around the world. But I fell in love with a guy at work, but I already resigned, and I realize I miss this guy so damn much just one day after that. It's funny because we used to have this miscommunication at 1st and I got angry at him and he belittles me because I'm such a slow-learner and i tend to be panic and I know that but it seems all the staffs are too nice to tell me that and he's the only one that dare to speak up and honestly I made a vow I will never ever be nice or friend with him because of that because the truth hurts. But despite that he's also the only one that always help me and protect me and cheering for me when I'm down because I got yelled at for the mistake I've done. And funny thing is i never realize that, until one day after i resigned and i feel so empty and i got this annoying feeling and asking myself whats missing and it is usually my habit to msg him every morning asking about work (just about work) and urghhhh i cant do that anymore. And i know this is not gomna work and i decide to forget him because hes busy with work,im busy w mine, but damn i post a status today about my cat and he said its cute, why oh why at this time when i firmly decide to forget him. I feel like fate is toying with me and im usually a rational and mature woman, but damn this feeling is too strong. Enough rambling, i know this is just one-side,tgif,cheers, gonna continue watching kdrama w beers. T__T

Can anyone explain the popularity of Liar and His Lover on this website. It's so bizarre??? It's a show that's cynically designed for 5 year old fangirls.

Anyway, I'm still enjoying Chicago Typewriter. Only watchable show on TV right now.

So was Mary Poppins and plenty of grown up adults still loved it. Just because it is aimed at a younger audience does not mean adults can't like it too. Mary Poppins even got nominated for Oscars. Liar and His Lover is nothing groundbreaking or Oscar worthy but it's a lot more well executed than its juvenile premise would imply.

Audreana, I agree with your point, though I wouldn't quite reduce this drama to a "juvenile premise." If you look beyond the age of the characters, their struggles are universal human struggles, of finding self-worth, balancing ambition and people, finding a place to belong to, confronting hate with pure honesty, self-awareness and I could go on. Young characters enhances those struggles to a more acute level, but the struggles themselves are not juvenile. Just my two cents.

I for one, really enjoys the show, it's not ground breaking but it's thoughtful. I wouldn't go so far as say that I see myself in them, but the characters are not 2-dimensional and easily dismissable. The drama manages to show it's viewers the complexity of each character and that's the main draw to me. I even root for the antagonists, what sorcery is this?

Hello Beanies, well, I am 40 years old as of last Monday April 17. I did not feel anything. Lol Just went to dinner with my hubby while my mother in law babysit kids. I feel old on Saturday when my cousin got married. We were talking as she is 30 years old and I am 40 years old. Lol. Tomorrow is my youngest son First Holy Communion. I just hope everybody is well enough to go tomorrow night. (Husband was sick now better. THanks to him. Three kids got sick. ??)

Tunnel: I can't wait for next episode.
Dr. Qin: They have episode 15 and 16. I am almost caught up with it.
So far, that is the only two dramas I am watching right now. Lol... Have a great weekend everyone!!!

Happy birthday!!! 40 is the perfect age--your body still works, you have a stable relationship, kids, hopefully accomplishing all you set out to do, getting that extra piece of pie, and watching that extra hour of drama without feeling too guilty!!!

Hello Everyone,
I'm a long time lurker to the site, and only decided to register because of the Goblin Meme Comp.
That said however, I have enjoyed reading all the comments and recaps over the years and am a fan of quite a few of you. :)
I may not be too active here, but I will try to add my two cents to recaps every now and then.
The new site looks great and am loving some of the new features. I hope the bugs get worked out soon so we can all use the site to its fullest.

Hello fellow Beanies!

I have been on a major drama slump for the past few months. Until I stumbled upon Strong Woman Do Bong Soon and my kdrama addiction shenanigans was awoken. I started watching the drama for Park Bo Young, but I came out of the drama completely enamored of Park Hyungsik. I cannot believe how such a talented young actor was out of my radar until this drama. I went back and watched his earlier dramas -- What Happens to my Family and High Society. And I would say he was a solid actor even before. For someone who was an idol, he really has amazing acting chops. I initially thought that my love for him was mainly due to the perfect character of Ahn Min Hyuk. After watching his other roles, I am now even more convinced that PHS has the talent to embody a character with such genuineness and heart. Even if the character is detestable, he is able to elicit empathy from the audience. He has this charisma that draws your attention to him every time. He has such a bright future ahead of him. I cannot wait for him to be in a drama that is more tightly written than his previous ones.

Also, he was not just some third-rate idol, cause the man can sing incredibly well and can dance with major swag. Park Hyungsik is giving my life recently!!! Please be back with a drama soooon!

I totally agree with you. I've been binge-watching some of his YouTube clips and I'm falling over his charms again and again. He's the type who creeps into you even and you just can't stop it. I'm also looking forward on his future projects. :)

Any word on when Man to Man will finally be available on Netflix in the US? I thought today was the day. It's driving me crazy.

I noticed it was up tonight on Canadian Netflix so usually that means it's up for the US. Check again?

yesterday, i got scammed out of a huge (for me) amount of money and i'm still bummed about it. more than the money, i'm angry and frustrated at myself because how could i be so stupid! i've always prided myself on being logical and rational yet the few times my emotions get the best of me i always paid a dear price for it.
i want to cry my stress out but tears won't come so i've been stress cleaning this whole morning- at least i'm being productive /sigh
