Things I didnt notice before about "Louis":

the guitar music in ep 2, secret office-coffee scene. really nice feel, haven´t noticed a lot of plain guitar in kdramas

long distance shots without sound like when Butler Kim is telling Louis Granny is sick in ep 1. the story told like a silent movie.

all the important characters introduced in the online shopping montage, including mr. Cop and Jae-Sook
Louis speaking english now and then being very much like the Gramps in HSKOS

I´ll keep re-watching and trying to see what I didnt see before. Have you ever had a feeling with a drama that perhaps you missed something important but you have no idea where to look for it?

and another QUESTION:
what are the life lessons you´ll take along from Louis and other dramas that ended this week?
* Instant coffee can catch serial killers, but only if they wear cycling shoes.
* If you buy wild ginseng, you get a puppy as a bonus.
* you grow up faster if you peel garlic
* never use plum preserves in your dishes
* if you wear fashionable clothes, you get kidnapped
* grannies like high heels (not too sure about mine though)
* handsome cops are good at moving furniture

some things were not explained, like how does Louis hear the voices of quality items, or if there was some consipiracy involved with the death of his parents. But I don´t really care. the world of Louis and Bok Shil is the ideal world where everyone is friends and takes care of each other. Next to the shocks of this week and the nasty reaction I´ve heard about (harrassment of muslim students in the US, racist grafiti etc) it is like a safety bubble.

I have a request, as well. There are those letters that the cast wrote, is there a translation anywhere? I can read, but I don´t understand it yet. there are still only 12 words in my vocabulary...

Seo In-gook's handwriting is lol

Hello, Greetings for the viewers who love Shopping king Louis. I am Seo In-gook who played Louis role in SKL. At first, I want to say sincere thanks for loving SKL. Compared to the begining, the unbelivable micaculous happening at the end is all thanks to SKL viewers.
At first I myself worried a lot if the viewers could understand Louis's sensitivity and a little peculiar breathing, so even though it didn't show outwardly, I worked Louis in every scene with incrediable worries and thoughts. I think I doubted myself. If I did overacting? If I am lacking etc. Anyway I am thankful to the viewers who accepted me like that, and loving SKL. It is all thanks to the viewers who allowed us to do the ratings promise we made for 10+ ratings. What we decided by going through many discussions with other actors are to show our thanks with hand-written letters and our precious items.(I can not write well like Louis). Intesting things, makeup, etc we thought various things, but since we can't just enjoy ourselves, I am writing a letter.Even though the writing looks weird, contents are weird, please understand it (aegyo). Once again, thanks for loving SK Louis and all the characters. Please remember for a long time. LOVE if you love us for a long time.

Nam Ji-hyun's hand-writing is pretty!

Hello, viewers who loved Shopping King Louis!
I am Nam Ji-hyung who played Go Bok-sil role in SKL. Weather suddendly turned to cold, so I hope you didn't catch cold? I had hard time because I caught the cold at the end of drama shooting. Oh right! I wrote this letter as ratings promise SKL actors have made! We said we would keep our promise when ratings hit the two digit. Through much thoughts, we decided to deliver an actor's hand-written letter and precious item to one winner in an event for the viewers. Congratulations for winning as the lucky person. As my precious item, I prepared a book I read having fun. I wanted to pick an item which had scent of Bok-sil, but there was nothing left. So instead I am delivering the book which I fingered. I will be thankful if you are a person enjoying reading regularly. If not, I hope you can have fun reading this time. Our SKL is a drama grew up with abundant love from the viewers. It grew up well with love from actors, staffs, and the writer as base, and love, interests, cheering from the viewers as nourishment. Unless all our hearts were the same, it would have been a difficult task to achieve. I am so grateful that I could have happy memory, this precious project where I lived as Bok-sin for last 4 months. I hope Louis is remembered as a drama full of warmth and happiess to the viewers! Please have a good wrap up for the rest of year and stay healthy. Once again Thank you! Written by Nam Ji-hyun.

I'm so glad that she graduated from uni so she can devote herself to acting full time.
Looking forward to her new sageuk movie with Cha Seung-won. I've loved her since King Sejong.

other dramas I am watching on and off:

The Kings´ Face - didn´t just start because of Seo in Guk, but because I was curious, there were such different reviews, some said it was a great drama, others, that it was draggy and boring. It is a more "quiet" sageuk for sure, literally - which I like a lot. Not so much howling and screaming by the court officials which I always find so annoying. focus on the main character(s), the father and son, less subplots than some other dramas. Well acted of course. especially by the male cast. I don´t know, I like the pace and the story.

Man living in our house - not that interested in this, what actually caught my attention was the greenhouse and the farming, as a garden enthusiast, my ears started moving. It is great when dramas show people actually working, especially such necessary work as growing food.
The borther-sister dynamics and those characters are pretty odd but entertaining.

"The Man Living In Our House"
I agree with you and the awesomeness/uniqueness of the working/farming aspect of the show. I think this may be the first KDrama I've watched where the mail lead isn't some sort of affluent businessman/chaebol or someone who works for those type of people. It brings this homey atmosphere to the entire drama that I really like!

about the greenhouse: those strawberries won't survive the end of the series, right? They are in an unheated greenhouse, in november, in korea. The leads have already arrived in the "fluffly turtleneck"-season of dramas. I'm seriously concerned for all those strawberries... it keeps me from enjoying all the fluffly chemistry that happens in the greenhouse...

Hi, redfox!

Kim Myung-Gon caught my eye as Eunuch Song in THE KING'S FACE, which is the drama that got me interested enough in Gwanghae and the Imjin War to watch HWAJUNG and ROARING CURRENTS, and take a peek at IMMORTAL ADMIRAL YI SUN SHIN. I was tickled to recognize him by voice in SCHOLAR WHO WALKS THE NIGHT. He plays King Yeongjo in the 2015 KBS2 supernatural drama special RED MOON about Prince Sado. He also appears in the terrific flick MASQUERADE with Lee Byung-Hun in the dual role of Gwanghae and the jester who impersonates him.

Shin Sung-Rok as the face reader with revolution on his mind creeped me out... which came as a shock after seeing him as a softie of a cop in THREE FATHERS, ONE MOTHER. I recently caught his understated performance in HYENA. It was perfect, and heartbreaking.

I, too, enjoyed the greenhouse scenes in MAN IN OUR HOUSE, and suspect that Nan-Gil is actually a green man, what with his tree-planting by the lake. It seems that if he's not kneading dough, he's kneading soil and turning organic compost. MAN OF THE VINEYARD is the only other Kdrama I've seen so far with an agricultural setting, and it was gorgeous. As was Oh Man-Seok in the title role.

Shin Sung Rok makes me kind of exhasperated with the obsessive glow in his eyes. his character is like a revolution junkie, willing to sell his left foot or whatever to get one dose of satisfaction. Taking down people like he is just cutting branches off trees on his path totally emotionless.

Hi Pakalana Pikake! I know you enjoyed watching Love Me If You Dare (even though they made many missteps with the ending). I am watching When a Snail Falls in Love by the same writer. It is really well done, no missteps so far.

It's a mystery and the leading lady is a Sherlock Holmes this time around. Interestingly enough, the leading man uses facts and research (and hard work) to one-up her a bit which is a non-traditional way of presenting the Sherlock trope.

I'm also watching the Tdrama V-Focus just for fun. The leading man wears way way way too much make-up, the heroine is a bit screechy, and the plot is predictable. However, it is a cheesy breezy fun reality break.

For Kdramas, I am hooked on 1% of Anything. So cute! Happy drama watching!

*waves back at Mermaid Scribbler*

I sure did enjoy LMIYD, thanks to your hot tip!

I've been curious about the title of WHEN A SNAIL FALLS IN LOVE. The first time I encountered it, I was having flashbacks to Dalpengi in FATED TO LOVE YOU. I would never have guessed it was a whodunit. If it's not too spoilerish, what the heck does the title mean?

It sounds like one I'd like, so I'll add it to my to-watch list. Here's hoping the wheels stay on... Thanks!

Watched Chinese film KAILI BLUES in late September, and am letting it marinate in the back of my mind before rewatching. It has an interesting time element that is reminiscent of the Mugyo aspects in OH HAE YOUNG AGAIN and MIRROR OF THE WITCH. The cinematography is a refreshing departure from the commonly-encounted jump cuts, close-ups, and other editing folderol that irritates my eyes and makes me want to scream. It really feels as if I'm seeing the action unfold in person. Interesting. I liked some of the music quite a bit, and was surprised by the rockish pop music played by the local band in Dang Mai. The geography/topography is lovely even as the desolate towns are depressingly decrepit. It reminded me of driving across East Germany to West Berlin in 1978 and seeing the dusty little rural villages with rutted cobblestone streets.

Was wrapped up in the whole MOON LOVERS and MOONLIGHT mischigas, and am now live-watching MAN LIVING IN OUR HOUSE and ROMANTIC DOCTOR TEACHER KIM... and will go really nuts when GOBLIN debuts. Looking forward to Gong Yoo.

I made it a point to watch the original 1% OF ANYTHING for early Gang Dong-Won this summer -- along with the poignant MY BRILLIANT LIFE. Also viewed most of LJG's earlier work I hadn't yet seen... and thoroughly enjoyed TIME BETWEEN DOG AND WOLF, TWO WEEKS, and HERO.

I started out as a sageuk watcher, but have been watching a lot of romances and rom-coms lately... most of them older ones. Snuck in the thoroughly excellent SOUL MATE before MOON LOVERS, and rewatched the whole shebang afterwards as mind-bleach, along with CLOUD STAIRS and STARS FALLING FROM THE SKY... What can I say -- Shin Dong-Wook floats my boat. Earlier in the summer, caught ALONE IN LOVE, which is an understated and realistic love story that I loved to pieces. Even took a walk on the wild side with the raunchy HYENA for Shin Sung-Rok's terrific characterization of the most admirable character of the lot... and discovered Oh Man-Seok in the process. That revelation led to the noir thriller OUR TOWN with him, Ryu Deok-Hwan, and Lee Sun-Kyun -- what a cast! OMS was terrific in MAN OF THE VINEYARD, which was like 1% OF ANYTHING meets GREEN ACRES.

Somewhere along the line I took in A WIFE'S CREDENTIALS, which reminded me of ALONE IN LOVE and HEARD IT THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE in that the characters were well-developed, and realistically changed gradually, if at all. Also caught THE LAST SCANDAL OF MY LIFE, which had great music and a long-lost love theme.

Oooo - Thanks for the movie recommendation.

I think the title of "Snail" is because the heroine is off-beat and likes to draw. She makes cute little characters for everyone she works with. The handsome lead is a lion in all of her drawings.

She is very petite and reserved and brilliant, but strange. I know he refers to her as a little monster from another planet, but I think he also refers to her as a snail.

I had flashbacks of Fated to Love You, too. Maybe it is a term of endearment like monkey or kitty like we use for kids here in the States? No clue, but she does start drawing herself as an alien snail and she also discovers (in episode 10?) that she may have feelings for him, the leading man. I hope that's not too spoilerish! ?

1.2.3.2.2 Mermaid Scribbler,

Glad to see you saw my post. ;-)

Hmmm... I wonder if China has its own version of the folktale "Mud Snail Bride," which was the reason why Lee Gun called Kim Mi-Young "The Snail." I didn't realize that the Korean version was a remake of a Taiwanese drama... curiouser and curiouser.

Truth to tell, snails do look a little like space aliens as they ooze across surfaces on their rippling feet, with extended eyestalks waving in the breeze. Plus they live in their own RVs...

So, when you're done with King's Face, let me know! Just post it in another OT, since I almost always tune in and will be sure to catch your final review!

I think you're a definite fan of SIG...having watched I Remember You was it more than 20+ times, you wrote somewhere??? Haha... No use denying going to Kings Face cos of SIG! :P

I went straight to Discovery of Romance right after watching Oh Hae Young Again, just for Eric. So, I get you. I love love love SIG in Answer Me 1997, High School King of Savvy, and I Remember You. I just never got around to watching KF, the heist one (whose name I've temporarily forgotten), and Shopping King Louis. But I will, I will.

it really wasn´t though. I wouldnt have watched it even for him but I am the kind of distrustful person... I have liked a lot of dramas other people find meh, so it is always kind of a match bell for me to go check them out once I hear "Oh, don´t bother, it is not worth your time". and I have hated many dramas people raved about. I only trust my own judgement now. for once I find the conflict very real and interesting.

A MAN AND A WOMAN, right? I watched it a bit over a month ago. If you ignore the whole adultery angle, it's a bittersweet romance. The cinematography is lovely -- and the locations in Finland, Estonia, and Korea are beautiful. The music is excellent, and matches the mood perfectly. Like a fine wine, Gong Yoo is maturing very, very nicely. ;-)

Happy Weekend for 11/11
1% of something : I think the charm of this drama is the attitude of the character (well minus the ex-fiancee). It's something that I want a character to be at the end of a drama. Not to downplay them against this drama but it feels so good to see how Dahyun deals with the ex. We encounter so many of the ex-fiancee character but it never really directs like what Dahyun did, she never back down in words and when it possible, she even summoned Jae In to deal with it at that time. She doesn't follow her bullshit or inferior with her. She also doesn't let Tae-ha go before they told her the real situation and she gets mad. She doesn't even think it special but she is mad and demands the apologies. I hate the fiancee but the lead's response to her is so great that I don't mind she is being crazy.
Then Jae In changes, he listens more and he feels that he needs to change his way.
I really dig how they touch each other face, hands, hair and lips, it feels intimate in a small gesture.

Close Cased : I just started this and on episode 3. I feel like this drama treated the case and the police with good and proper intention, they are good at their job and they don't have a super power. I mean it's wowow drama, it never let me down. It's good but what I loved the most is the soundtrack. Jdrama rarely used a song as the back sound and this drama even used an English song that just so fitted, so heartbreaking and it feels right. They even used One ok Rock - Heartache (taka forever)

I still need to catch up cause I didn't make improvement on Nigeru and Umei ni nita koi since last week, I should T.T
in return, I watch Ask us Anything , Abnormal Summit, Happy Together 2 ; MDBC special , Radio Star ,
this 4 actually can replace all my drama if they aired 2 times a week; thank you OnDemand Korea
and now we'll enter the new phase of Wed-Thur drama, woaah

IDK if this allowed so I would let the @mods to review it 1st before it gets posted,

On November 10, a source from CJ E&M revealed that PD Lee was discovered dead in a hotel located in Gangnam district on October 26 at 4 a.m. KST. The police are reportedly investigating the death as a suicide.

This drama holds a special place in my heart, I like how the opening and ending shoot beautifully. It usually captured the contrast of various colour of food, panorama, view, nightlight, the people and put the character in the centre with voiceover on why they are alone.
It showed that everyone has their beautiful moment when they appreciate what they did today or enjoy what they eat today or even what they dream.
I don't have much to say except thank you for your work, I know you wouldn't see this but thank you so much,
My condolences to his family and friend

For what little it may be worth, I think the deceased was an assistant PD, not the main PD. Makes sense -- I think a main PD would have enough status to commit bullying but be mostly bully-proof himself.

Re posts waiting for moderation: I know it says somewhere that posts with links may be held up, but I've seen that not all of mine are. I suspect they may have an automated trusted list, and Soompi may be on it -- after all, the DramaBeans home page has a link to Soompi.

@Sancheezy -
Since you seem to be enjoying Nigeru wa Haji da ga Yaku ni Tatsu [We Married as Job], here are two more suggestions. The first is Nounai Poison Berry [Poison Berry in My Brain] which is a movie. The second is an 8 episode drama, the last episode airs today. It usually takes about a week to get subtitled. Thank you subtitlers! The drama is Umei ni, Nita Koi [Destiny-Like Love].

Did you end up watching the movie Shinya Shokudo [Midnight Diner] over Halloween? I would really like to know if you liked it.

@beanies The above two dramas and two movies are Japanese and make a nice break from Korean dramas, especially if you are trying to recover from a particularly lame ending. Or a drama that started out so promising and went into the weeds. The have the added benefits of the following:

- No makjang mother-in-law
- No Subway sandwiches
- No birth secrets
- No truck of doom
- No single, double or triple amnesia

Sometimes a change of pace is a good thing.

0

@aranea -

I really enjoyed the first 2 Japanese drama seasons of Shinya Shokudo, though admittedly got a little bored by the 3rd.

0

Even with getting a little bored by the 3rd season, I recommend the Korean version. They were literally able to find Master's long lost Korean cousin. The food is Korean so new recipes to learn, the stories have a decidedly Korean view point which makes them fresh and the supporting cast is excellent.

This is not always the case. The Korean drama Second To Last Love is nothing like the Japanese original Saigo Kara Nibanme no Koi [Second To Last Love]. It is easier to list what they have in common than their differences. Basically three things the drama "title", the male lead is a hard working under appreciated civil servant and both male leads have a large somewhat dysfunctional family. To say the Korean drama is a remake probably puts you in danger of being sued for false advertising.

0

@aranea
"To say the Korean drama is a remake probably puts you in danger of being sued for false advertising."
Love this!
This term can be used to a lot kdrama remake.

0

@aranea,
I watched half way because my sister visits me suddenly, thank you for that, I enjoyed it even for a half way until the girl who cooked, Michiru and the salt tears comment then the screen goes dark and I just realised lately that it wasn't the real ending,
The movie is so moving like the drama's nuance that I beg my sister to let me finish that part 1st but I definitely will continue to end,

I heard of Poison Berry before but I haven't found it anywhere and it wasn't on cinema either, thank you,
probably it will be available in the corner of the internet (haah J-drama/J-movie problem 101)

Umei ni nita koi is 8 episode?? I thought it gonna be at least 10, ooh it's so short,

SPOILER

Summer Snow had a motorcycle of doom.

0

And Okashi no Ie had a truck of doom with a very touching "let's remember our dead friend" scene.

But definitely not as widely used as in k-dramas.

0

@alua you never cease to amaze me! Thank you for your hard work.

0

@alua... TT.TT
okashi no ie reminds me of anohana: the flower we saw that day,

thank you ^^

0

Okashi no Ie [House of Sweets] that drama had an absolutely horrible ending. I boycotted Japanese dramas for six months as a silent form of protest. But, yes there was a truck of doom.

0

@aranea What as the ending? I can't remember... or maybe I didn't watch the final episode or two?

I just remember the general mellow feeling of the show and few distinctive scenes (the, ummm, singing).

0

The very very very short version, Grandma dies alone in a nursing home.

0

@alua super sad when their friend was dead. Also the ending was bitter lesson to him (and us) to not forget what's the most important for us in the process of climbing social ladder. He was working hard to make his love ones happy, but he forgot to be there for his grandma because of the busy life. His friend also came to him and ranted drunkenly about how they seems to lose their old selves and relationships after reaching their success. I am surprised the drama that usually gave lighthearted and warm tones, took the tragic turn. But I can't say I hate it. It was a precious slice-of-life gem.

0

The tragic irony of the ending was that in neglecting his grandmother and son to gain success, he sealed his own fate.
She died alone in a nursing home, waiting for him to visit. Children usually treat their parents the same way their parents treated their own parents or in this case parental figure. I hope he is prepared to die alone in a nursing home waiting for his son to visit. Be careful the lessons you teach your children.

The thing is jdorama has less chaebol who have latest car and when they do, they don't do crazy U-turn (or seldom drive).
The only romance drama I can think of which has car accident as premise is Anything for You (Kimi no Tame ni Dekiru Koto). It's old dorama but has beautiful story and beautiful ending. The other dorama mostly procedural (crash him to kill him, hit and run case) or medical (patient is crash accident victim).
Actually jmovie has more accident in their romance story, like Orange, Matataki, Be With You (Ima Ai ni Yukimasu, okay it has dorama series version too), I Give My First Love to You.

I remember the Jdrama about a high school girl who loves ramen so much and she visit lot of ramen place,

I watched it raw at the time and all I can think is ramen,
it's delicious and I like the way it shot,
I sometimes feel weird watching mukbang or the overly slurping in the korean show (I knew it's their culture but it doesn't really fit me)

but the way this girl eat, with the hair tied and very good chewing timing, idk how to write this properly but that looks and sounds so good without being disturbing,
I actually go to buy pasta after that but naah it's not the payback my heart want to eat,

@Sancheezy -
You learn something new everyday. From your posts, I had always assumed that you were a person who slurped your ramen excessively. Please accept my apology.

Ramen Daisuki Koizumi-san [Ms. Koizumi Loves Ramen Noodles] is even better subtitled. The fanatical ramen eating subculture is just amazing. Real ramen is not available to me, but it changed the way I look at instant ramen forever.

As a side note, I do not excessively slurp my ramen.

0

@aranea
I don't do slurping generally , it kinda messy imo, you know the broth is gonna be everywhere,
but it's fine, no need to apologised

well tbh I did it sometimes too, when I am alone and I want to eat like the video suggested,
like to know if it possible to happen or not,
hahaha

Re: Shinya Shokudo [Midnight Diner]

I hadn't logged in to Netflix in a while, and just noticed they have season one of the Japanese version of MIDNIGHT DINER.

I watched a couple of episodes of the Korean version and really liked it. Very nice vibe. Need to get back to it.

Also stumbled across Jdorama GOOD MORNING CALL on Netflix and gave the first three episodes a whirl. Cute.

As you mention about Nigeru, I'm rewatching MnD now and this two dramas make me think may be marriage based on contract will last longer than the one based on love. In MnD, KT said that there's no such a things as love that last forever. As the love start to fade, marriage start to fall appart. But if it based on contract, after a while love may bloom but when it fade they still have contract to keep them forever.
It's been explore more in jdorama Date, I can see that husband-wife relationship can be viewed as a partnership for life, based on commitment and not mainly on love.
And many kdrama have marriage contract premise and they always have happy ending so it may be true or at least kdramaverse agree with that statement.

This reminds me of someone that asked Ha Seok Jin this question in Talent for Sale,
she asked if love is forever and he said "no, it will fade away"
I think it's true to some extent, love will never feel the same way as before but when love reaches another people, it can become sincerity, loyalty and affection, so we can renew the love even it may not the fluttery one we have before,
I think that people should marry because love/affection to each other but stay because of the commitment,
a contract can't exactly bind people who don't have affection for each other, that's why I think some arranged marriage with the ideal meeting, family meeting and kind purpose actually end up just good, this is how I see what happen in Nigeru, Date and 1% ,
2 people are getting an arranged marriage/meeting/dating because they see their compatibility and other saw their compatibility then the love blooming after that,
it does not love at the 1st sight kind of things,

this also what make marriage and dating or even cohabitation are way different, it's the commitment to try to fix any problem in marriage because they've signed the commitment.

Love the fact that you mentioned date. Which have excelled in exploring all sort of hilarious antics in marital relationships. I am watching nigeru too, and while it does seem like an interesting concept, but is it safe enough? That's what bugs me. I'm sure not all guys are as angelic as Hiramasa-san lol, so while he'd be happily keeping his distance and maintain all the facts in a reverent manner, a guy like his playboy colleague would probably do the opposite lol.

Well, even if Hiramasa goes further, they legally married. Except if he abuse or rape her, that's another case.
In Date, I'm surprise when they arguing about child custody. I'm like "what?! did I miss some episode?!". But well, it's so them, look further ahead and prepare for the worst.
And I love how they kind of put wife as a job in Nigeru. Yes, in most Asian culture when they don't work, becoming wife can be seen as a job where the husband pay them to take care of the household.
I'm Asian woman and I have a lot discussion about marriage where I end up with "do you looking for husband or financial support?" to my female friend or "instead of wife, why don't you just hire a maid!" to my male friend when I ask them why they want to marry or how they want their marital life be.

Happy OT fellow kdrama-holics! :)

Today i found out my favorite ending in the kdrama. I like a positive happy ending like On The Way To the Airport, No Spoiler will be given!! hehehe. It is an open ending, but this open ending give me the warmth feeling that would not make me cringe or scratch my head in disbelief. I confess to you, sometimes, when i rewatched kdrama, i often skip the ending because of the cheesiness that i really cant bear to watch ㅋㅋㅋㅋ.

So beanies, what is the type of ending that you actually suprised, that not in million years you would enjoy? Another one, what kind of ending that you hate the most?
i know, CITT ending will be the majority the answer LOL

@faith, @Michykdrama,

So happy to find fellow NCIS fans among the Beanies!!!

I'm happy for Michael Weatherly that he's now headlining a series of his own... but I sure do miss Very Special Agent Anthony DiNozzo. Can't recall when I started watching. Hubby and I have certainly gone back and watched everything from the beginning. NCIS is a spin-off of JAG, if I recall correctly. Another great series from Donald Bellisario. I miss Lt. Colonel Sarah MacKenzie, USMC, and Captain Harmon Rabb, Jr., USN...

It tickles me that one of my childhood heartthrobs (besides Dr. Anthony Newman who got sucked into THE TIME TUNNEL), the gorgeous Illya Kuryakin, is still gracing the small screen as a wise old forensic pathologist... Dang, I'm getting old -- but not as old as Ducky.

Truth to tell, NCIS is the only American TV show I still watch religiously. Once in a while I watch NCIS NEW ORLEANS, but it doesn't have the same pizzaz as the original. Kdramas have stolen my heart and attention span. But they don't have silver fox Leroy Jethro Gibbs. Hehehe...

I hate endings that don't fit the rest of the series. When we've been given one type of story the entire show and then given an ending that doesn't hold true to the rest of the series, that bugs me. So like, I'll never watch Scarlet Heart. And I wasn't a fan of the last two minutes of My Amazing Boyfriend, and the jump in Master's Sun, and to some extend the end of Misaeng (I understand they needed to tie it back the beginning, but...).

I just think the ending didn't quite match with the rest of the series. They left the setting we've been used to the entire time, made Geu-Rae a lot more confident really quickly, and kind of gave it a "pursue your dreams" feel. And that's not the sense I got from the rest of the series. I loved the show still, and I think the ending could have worked... it just needed a few more episodes to transition the characters and setting better. It felt like too abrupt a change. It left me just hopeful instead of depressed-hopeful like the rest of the show did. Did that knock it out of my top 3-4? No, it's still up there, jockeying for a place. The ending isn't everything to a show, after all. ^^

ahh..well...they are preparing season 2 as we speak, so finger crossed that their next ending is good too ~~

0

Are they really? I don't know how I feel about that, actually. If they get all of the same actors I'm down for it. But I really loved the early tension between Geu-Rae and Young-yi, not so much the later love line with the teacher and him, and pairing Young-yi up with Baek-ki. So if they focus more on lovelines in the sequel, I'm worried.

0

it seem that everyone has agree to reprise their roles again.... thats the downside on waiting for the webtoon to be completed...probably we hear some solid news next year..well they have to, because siwan need to enlist around next year too if im not mistaken :)

0

@faith --

Wait, what?? Misaeng Season 2??? I'm oddly excited and fearful at the same time..

@Cozybooks --

Like you, I found the ending of Misaeng a little over-dramatic, but then it was also the opening of the drama, so I understood that there needed to be a huge draw to ensure folk came back to watch.

But then again, I loved the whole candlelit, evening desert walk--along that path least traveled--and felt that it gave a sweeping, majestic and deeply-resonant feel to the whole ending/drama. The fact that all the characters in the dramas were living such confined lives, laboring over details like cargo delivery schedules and whether or not an Xerox copy of a document was found floating on the floor of the company's main lobby, etc., yet ultimately finding in the end an opening, an expanse of space, breathing room... that, to me, was a profound message, telling us that even in the direst of times, there is still room to grow, still space to make a difference. (Sorry, that probably could've been written better.)

A'way, I'm depressed about the results of the US election, and then the death of one of the greatest voices this century has ever heard (RIP Leonard Cohen), that remembering Misaeng's message gives me more than a little respite... What a great drama, and what a hopeful message it gives.

0

@Beanfan I totally understand, don't worry. And I too loved the poem they used, it's one of my favorites. If nothing else it shows me that a show doesn't have to be perfect for me to love it completely. ^^

0

I just hope the ending at least address the elephant in the room and give the reason for it,

you have curiosity throughout the episode and that mystery should be answered for me,
like in Big, who is the man?
like in gu family book, how does he become chaebol? who is her right now?
like in you from the star, do the saliva already healed?
like in hong gil dong, do they died or why they have to do that?
something like that,

I am not actually count the last episode to make the whole series bad if it end sad (sad proper ending is good), I still re-watch it if it's good or had some happiness even the ending is not that good but still happy,
unless it's big and Reply 1994 (this one hurts me till now)

@Dramadazed,

Thanks for the tip-off re: THE SUSPECT. I just caught it on Netflix. It was a blast seeing Gong Yoo in an action role. For a second there I was wondering if I were watching A MAN CALLED GOD. Holy smokes... Choi Han-Gyul has certainly filled out nicely... *fans self*

I have to admit that the nearly continuous close-ups were a bit too MOON LOVERS-ish for my taste (and eyes)... There was a whole lotta (camera) shakin' goin' on, too. But I loved the microfiche twist. That was something I didn't see coming. I mean, who ever talks about rutin, for heaven's sake? Let alone in an action flick. (Nowadays it's obtained from an African plant, but before that, buckwheat was the source I recall seeing most often.)

Nice drive-by cameo by the Cement Truck of Near Doom. The overall automotive carnage was impressive.

It was weird seeing royal astronomer Choi Ji-Mong of Goryeo running around as a North Korean agent... and weirder still when I realized I'd last seen Cho Seong-Ha (the scheming NIS director) playing the conniving Joseon kingmaker, Kang Joo-Sun, in HWAJUNG.

Also per your recommendation, I caught Lee Sun Gyun in PETTY ROMANCE. I loved his performance (and voice) in COFFEE PRINCE... and got a kick out of him in this one as well. The only role I've seen Cho Gang-Hee in was the female lead in HEART TO HEART. Her bluffing here is hilarious. Oh Jung-Se is unrecognizable from his recent turn as the hospital chaebol in BEAUTIFUL MIND... Here he's a slacker-looking cartoonist, and a convincing one at that.

A while ago I watched LSG in the noir thriller OUR TOWN with Ryu Deok-Hwan and Oh Man-Seok... It's a far cry from the Thornton Wilder play of the same name, let me tell you. It'll keep you on the edge of your seat... Um... beware the ending is all I can say.

I watched a lot Korean television this week, but very little K-drama actually. I'm not only the only person within a 100-mile radius who's ever heard of K-drama, I'm also the only fan of the so-called sport of curling in that area -- and MBC currently broadcasts the Pacific-Asian championships from Uiseong. I love the Pacifics, because almost all competetive teams from that region are unapologetic glass canons.

Anyway, back to ... err ... business: I've almost caught up with Jealousy Incarnate for the final episodes. What I've learned so far:

(1) When you are not heterosexual, that means you are ill physically and mentally and you need to be cured by forced intimacy with a person of opposite gender.

(2) Women, no matter how competent they are, should not be part of the work-force, because they are inherently unable to work professionally.

I always assumed both those themes were satirical because the show patently had characters be just the opppsite. Although I would note the chef and his asexuality was a bunch of bull since it was noted he was a horndog who lost his mojo in the beginning.

The "asexuality" side-plot is so disgusting that I don't even want to try to further comment on it. Any other show I would have dropped over this ...

I'm much more okay with all the misogyny of course. I expected it and the lack of professionalism of every single woman in this show, while not being much of a satire, is kind of funny.

The chef's resolution was definitely disappointing. But I don't understand about the misogynistic approach. Hye won was professional throughout and na ri's hitches during that election coverage was the production's fault.
Ja young and sung sook were established to be aggressive in their work and that was told as the reason they actually got estranged from ppal gang because I think them slapping na ri is why you are calling them unprofessional?

On a more positive note, Jealousy Incarnate unlocked a few seemingly-impossible achievements. For example, it's the first K-drama ever that managed to make the physical love triangle cock fight work. Many writers love this trope and it makes for good entertainment on paper, but because it's so overused and comes with way too many possible pitfalls, it always fails miserably.

In JI however, the mud wrestling fight is just pure genius. It really manages to stay victorious on all fronts:

It works as a sequence of scenes that tell a story, especially in the way it is build up as a (visual) joke. It gives us a crucial piece of evidence to see the reality of the "friendship" between these two guys and understand them better as individuals, while not sacrificing any character coherence. The heavy-handedness of the metaphoric approach is expertly glossed over -- with an absurd amount of comically charged mud. It doesn't create some of the usual unfortunate implications in the romance plot because Na-ri is and stays oblivious (being busy providing a hilariously funny background event) to the whole thing. In fact, her being dragged through the mud as the anti-climactic end to the sequence is the capstone to the masterful deconstruction of the entire trope.

That mud fight will go in history of kdramas. Never have I seen it being done better. Great job by the pd/writer. It was a mere fight in the mud which said way more with those few dialogues than tons of dialogues in most shows.

That is another thing I liked about the writer, she didn't throw dialogues/situations/symbolism right in our face and expected us to understand it ourselves. But they were also simple so we don't have any trouble understanding the real meaning behind them.

So it was not only me who felt dissatisfied with how they resolved Nari's career progression (?) in JI. I love this drama to pieces. So much so that I booked a ticket to Korea just to buy JI goods next month. That said, ep 24 was bitter for me. I can swallow that resolution if Nari was performing well as an announcer but decided it was not for her. But what we got was basically office bullying that's becoming common in the real world. They put you on "standby" and because of the temp status, unpaid for the meantime, until you are left with no choice but to resign or change jobs.
\(゜ロ\)(/ロ゜)/
The 9pm slot disaster was not even her fault. Nor majority of the election mishap. Aaargghhh.

Hey, everyone!

Man, what a week! I'll skip the politics, since I still feel a bit shocked regarding the US elections.
Today started on a sad note -- Leonard Cohen has passed away. I've been listening to his songs non-stop so far, drawing inspiration from his masterfully crafted verses. He will be missed. And 2016 cannot end fast enough if it keeps taking away all the talents...

Dramas have been a source of consolation for me this week. I just ended Angry Mom (I know, a bit late on the bandwagon!) and it's such a great show. Talk about character growth! And I've also started J-drama We Married as a Job, since someone here on dramabeans mentioned it a couple of times. It will be my happy bubble for the next several weeks. Very cute, very sincere and so well-cast, I am in love with all of them!

Now I just need to choose another drama to watch - so far considering Awl since I feel like continuing Ji Hyun-woo spree.

After dealing with that, and having to explain a lot of topics to my kids I was hoping they wouldn't have to learn about yet, Shopping King Louis, 1% of Anything, and (surprisingly enough) Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim kept me distracted and sane all week.

Having been told by both domestic and foreign press for months that my party would lose the presidency for the 3rd time in a row, I too filled election night with Kdrama. My iPhone kept dinging and I finally had the nerve to check in around 9:30 Alaska time. So surprised! So much hyperbole coming from the Left. If anyone is in any country ILLEGALLY, they should always have been nervous. I certainly would be.

@Islander....Yeah thank God for kdramas! Oh and so much xenophobia, homophobia, racism, lack of respect for women, global warming and jada jada jada coming from Trump and the Right. But yes...let's focus on the things that unite us KDramas!

0

Yep. Kdramas and anime (well Yuri on Ice in particular). I was in a daze for a day after, then anger set in the next day and now waves of numbness. I live in a red state and I have noticed certain people are more rude and antagonistic towards me. I read reports of racists going wild and now reading the type of people he has or is thinking of appointing to his cabinet destroys the false sense of hope I had barely began to scrap together. Be careful what you wish for America.

I was devastated the next day. The worst thing was to go to work and see people celebrating while I'm crying at my desk. Some tried to show their faux concern and whitesplain the election to me while avoiding the elephant in the room, racism. Racism got Trump elected and things are going to pretty scary for POC. The KKK already planning a match in my state and the racist incidents are drastically increased. People are being screamed at to go back to their country even though they were born here. Students tautung their fellow students by saying '10 feet higher.' Cars and houses being vandalized and spay painted the N-words. Difficult time for PoC in America this week.

Angry Mom!! The princess minions are great, aren't they? And Bok-dongie (Ji-soo) is alternately hilarious and heart-rending. It made me a Ji-soo fan, that's for sure. If you want to see more of him in a mini-drama, I enjoyed watching Page Turner. And Cheer Up (aka Sassy Go Go), that was another good one in a silly way.

So sad about Leonard Cohen. My grandpa and I used to listen to him together all the time. I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for him and his songs.

You should definitely check out Awl! Arguably, Ji Hyun-woo's best performance by far.

I was bummed out by the news of Leonard Cohen's passing, too. Found this bluesy version, and went gaga over the guitar solo by Bob Metzger.

Such a sad couple of days...

Leonard Cohen will be missed for having one of the most soulful voices of our time. His versions were great, and other artists covering his songs have been awesome, too.

My favorite cover of all time... Famous Blue Raincoat by Tori Amos:

Happy Friday Beanies!

I’m currently having my finals and the only shows I managed to watch are Shopping King Louis and Romantic Doctor Kim

Shopping King Louis:
Finished this today and I looooved every second of it (though I have to say the 1st episode was meh). The only reason I started watching it was Seo Inguk and I honestly did not expect anything from the plot, because what can you expect from a story about an amnesiac chaebol? However, I think this drama has succeeded in exceeding the majority’s expectations because everything about it just worked so well. What made me stay were the tiny details the writer included (the lightsaber, 500 won coins, etc.) and of course the characters! All of them, including the “villains”, were so amusing to watch and I just love the bond between them. Overall, it’ll remain as one of my faves and I’ll definitely miss my precious Seo Inguk :’( Can he at least appear for a cameo in Weighlifting Fairy?

Romantic Doctor Kim:
I don’t have much to say but I enjoyed it for no specific reason. Also, Yoo Yoonseok and Seo Hyunjin are just ♥________♥

Oh and can anyone recommend dramas (preferably 16-20 eps) that are similar to OTWTTA? My mom really enjoyed it and I don’t really know what to recommend her… thank you!

A Good Wife - Taiwanese drama 2013, 15 episode

the theme is also adultery but it's not exactly happening (I mean, I don't want to spoil much but it's good),
the point of view of the couple is so good, even the husband, just stay for it and watch it till the end,
I find the ending is happy,

JI is over and its surprising how this show that I went into with no excitement over the premise and full trust on the leads easily became one of the top shows in my list and probably the best rom com. However, I still think they should've explored the secondary characters properly because they were no secondary characters whose scenes you would skip. I personally loved when we got to see bits of them. Hye Won is probably the coolest second female lead ever but again was given less screen time. I loved the office collegeues and was invested in the bitter sweet relationship between HS and his two sister in laws more than these two with Chef. We never really got to know much about Bum and his mom and why HS's mother was a bad mother in law for both of her daughter in laws. There are still many unanswered questions but overall i'm satisfied.

Now SBS, please be like MBC. I know you've had shows getting 20%+ this year but you know where the Daesang belongs. Because I know except for the channels yearly awards, the other awards might go straight to Dots. So give JJS a Daesang.

I'd like to second that. The issue with her was that she is the 2FL in the main romance plot, but not on the show as a whole (which is a huge waste).

I loved the office collegeues and was invested in the bitter sweet relationship between HS and his two sister in laws more than these two with Chef. We never really got to know much about Bum and his mom and why HS’s mother was a bad mother in law for both of her daughter in laws.

Really, if the show focussed solely on the A-plot and kept all the other characters simply in relation to that, it could have been so, so much better.

Maybe someday, this writer would be bold enough to give us a new drama with female lead like Hye-won or male lead like Jung-won. Or explore the whole in-laws shenanigan in a very different way. Or delve into stepmom's kind of story. I would love to watch that happen.

So DOTS is in the race? Oh, my poor, poor JI and everybody associated with it. :(

I hope they go with talent and not hype this time around. Puhleeezz..

Happy Friday Beanies! Is there some daylight savings change in time? OT was 1 hour later than I normally expect.

I'm having a trying week- not many dramas watched, mainly Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim and it's dawning on me I'm restarting work next week after a year off and I'm frankly terrified. Got to knuckle down and get prepared, and hope for the best. Sadly there won't be a cute colleague like Yoo Yeon-seok waiting for me ?

On the bright side, I brought my Boy to see his doctor today (after 8 months) and she was amazed at his progress! So I'm really happy about that. He is still calling my brother "Auntie" too, which still makes me laugh.

Hope everyone has a good week ahead!

Well, this week has been a week. Two midterms, one unit test, a research paper and the general elections for the presidency... I haven't gotten much sleep, that's for sure. Tuesday Night at 10:00 I even went to go see Doctor Strange thinking I could skip the most nerve-wracking moments and emerge to a new president. Midnight and... nope still counting. The movie was still a good choice, though--Benedict Cumberbatch is an incredibly versatile actor. He's similar-ish to Sherlock here but the mannerisms are all different. I quite enjoyed myself.

The K2: I had no idea it ended this week! I feel like there's so much story left to tell, it should've been an 18 episode drama. That wouldn't have made it any less of a mess, but I think the plot would be wrapped up nicer than we're about to get. The one thing I will say is that I'm afraid my opinion goes against much of the current one--I find that much of the time Song Yoon-A overacts her part, it feels a bit obvious to me. I'm glad everyone else enjoyed her performance, though! Ji Chang-Wook did well, but I got more feels watching the theater date in Healer than I ever got for anybody in this show. Maybe I'll just rewatch that when I'm done. ^^

The Man Living in Our House: I won't lie I totally thought they were going to get married in this week's episodes. I feel kind of tricked by last week's previews, makes me glad I haven't seen any for next week. I loved the episodes though, and I'm so glad they're really turning his bread kneading into a serious life motto. Everybody, let's knead bread! (Does anybody really know what that even means, metaphorically?)

When a Snail Falls in Love: That was unexpected. I totally didn't expect that person to die like that. Wow. Still riveting, though, and I love all our characters! I started reading the book in Chinese to supplement the show (one 1.5hr episode a week isn't enough!) and I'm loving it. I do need my online Chinese dictionary a lot, but it's worth it. So fun!

Neighborhood Hero: I remember when this first came out and there was so much scandal surrounding the actor, I never watched it. I don't know how the scandal wrapped up, but I never stopped being intrigued by the drama, so I started it last night. I've really enjoyed it so far--I'll be interested to see where it goes. Has anybody seen it? Is it good?

And finally, a question. Am I the only one whose already counted up my "Dramabeans Drama Beans" for the year to vote on my favorite dramas? And planned the rest of their viewing queue to get more this-year dramas finished and thus more beans? Ahahaha I'm so excited for the end of the year! Happy Weekend, beanies!

Haha. So I'm not the only one. I already counted up my "Beans" and surprised when found out I only have 13 Beans, and that already including short dramas like Page Turner. Guess I spend most of my 'kdrama-watching'time' for old shows this year.

Big Man
etc. etc.

So I thought, oh ok I did watch a lot of drama. Just not all new ones. ^^

I find the heroine of K2 to be stupid. Innocent angel victim overload.

0

Required fields are marked *

Yes, I think you should. It's well directed, with a distinct feel from Love Me if You Dare but the same flair. I love the leads, so quirky, and I didn't see one of the plot points coming (which is a major plus). It's not as intense as the end of LMIYD, but that one didn't get intense until the last 6-10 episodes, this one is already going there. So fun!

I think Anna is... interesting. She's not terribly well acted, but I still like her acting better than Yoo-jin's. The character I don't care much for, but I think it's a realistic portrayal of a shut-in girl trying to act like she's in control in the big, bad world. Overall, I don't think I'd watch it again for her. Or anybody else in it, sorry JCW.

Most people in their 20s are "stupid" because they haven't had much experience in the real world especially if they've been locked up most of their lives.

I also mentioned it in its 1st few episodes. Song Yoo Na went overboard many a times while acting. It felt quite forced and overdramatic.

True. And I do think the character concept is an interesting one: the victimized villain. I think that's a really interesting character, and I actually really like all the character ideas this writer brought into the story. I just think they could have
1) been executed better on the part of many of the actors (Yoon-A, the CEO, Presidential Candidate Park, Yoon-A's aid all come to mind) and
2) could have been given a more tightly written plot to play in (I could have done without the shower-fight, the Amazing nun solo, the gas attack).

It's hard because I see so much potential in the story and love the character descriptions... it's just the execution of both that fell flat (which happens so often, I feel. Not that I could do better, by any means).

0

On Benedict.
May be because his performance as Sherlock leave deep impact on me (too deep, his Sherlock is almost exactly what I imagine when read the book), so I keep seeing him as Sherlock in most his movie. I hope he can stop to play arogant-genius character to show his acting performance.

You are right she overacts, but for me it is refreshing to see very few actors who are overacts and able to amaze most of viewers, if not all. And in the middle of bland / normal acting by other actors in kdrama, this kind of actor will outshine the rest. The other example is Jang Hyuk.

re: what does "Kneading Bread" mean?

That's what I want to know! Does anybody know?! It's somehow gotten this sort of sensual "I love you but can't say it" connotation now. I can't even. My best guess is that it means "I like you so much I need something to take my mind off it" and he doesn't want to say all that (for various reasons) so he just says: I need to knead dough/bread.

Hi guys, happy friday! Haven't been around for so long because school has been keeping me busy - but now that I have a short break before finals start, I'm trying to clear some shows before I take a hiatus from dramas for a while.

Jealousy Incarnate: Managed to catch up all episodes just in time for the finale. It's been a long but fun ride. Show has made me a fan of Jo Jung Suk. Also all the Pasta references during Na Ri's blind date make me want to watch Pasta...

Woman With A Suitcase: Only managed to catch up till Ep 6, but hopefully I can catch up in time for the finale. Just wondering, will episode 16 be next week or the week after? Not very comfortable with the love triangle - I wish Lee Joon would be more than just a second lead for her.

Wanted: Just started this today and going to try to complete by this weekend. It's not as appealing as I thought it would be. Its lack of logic worries me too ('don't report to police' 'make a reality show'????)

I was going to start on Entourage but seeing the comments make me think twice about watching. It doesn't seem like a show I would watch anyway, so I'd rather spend the time watching something else instead.

Looks like I would have no new ongoing drama to watch after Woman With A Suitcase ends - good news because it means I'll have time to catch up other dramas.

Hi all:

How goes? Am looking out the window through orange-red maple leaves at a beautiful winter sky. I've been healing up from the surgery and haven't really been outside so cabin fever threatens. I did however go to my once a month English country dance group. I had intended not to dance but yeah, three weeks after hysterectomy I was dancing. Not a good idea, methinks. Nothing bad happened but it did kind amp up the pain meter.

Funny thing was when I came out of the hospital, I just wasn't in the mood for kdramas, even my current faves. So it took a while to get back into viewing. Still not quite connecting to them. My present obsession is watching Westworld and avoiding discussions of the election.

Other than that one of my stories is published here: http://www.fantasticstoriesoftheimagination.com/fiction-thing-of-beauty/

Dramas:

Finales are so good, aren't they? Culmination of good shows and --if one didn't exactly like a show-- hope for great new shows.

The Flower in Prison: This was a seriously good old-fashioned sageuk. It would have become great if the lead actress was better at..ya know...acting. Still, I was touched at the ending.

Currently watching:

Our Gab Soon: This is a seriously good family weekender makjang. I shouldn't be sitting here wishing Jae Soon should divorce her husband but really...it's not as if they're madly in love. Ah, Such explorations of expedient marriages!

Currently trying to watch again:

Woman with a Suitcase: I'm really not interested in the major story arc and would rather see a noona romance but eh....doesn't look as if I'll be rewarded with that.

Awaiting Goblin.

Have a great weekend, all.

Happy Friday! Happy for extra day off. It has been quite a week with election. My friends in Korea were all worried and got into prayer mode, but I am being optimistic. Drama-wise, I feel sad for all Wed-Thur dramas being ended because I enjoyed them all (Please someone give the writer, the music director and Jo Jung-seok of JI awards!), but excited for more to come. Hope LoBS (or Lobster?) is worth of all the buzz.

New Wed-Thurs drama 'Oh My Geum-bi' had a production press conference.[OSEN] This will be a healing father and daughter drama where a man Hwi-chul grows up from being a loser to a real father, taking care of his 10 year old sick daughter Geum-bi. Compared to 'Legend of the Blue Sea' with top star Lee Min-ho and Jun Ji-hyun and 'Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju' with popular young stars like Lee Sung-kyung and Nam Joo-hyuk which are to air in the same time slot, Geum-bi has the least buzz-appeal casts and most realistic story.
KBS drama center chief Jung Sung-hyo said "Geum-bi is a drama like drama. It is a standard family drama portraying the love between father and daughter. It plans to tell a heart-warming, touching story in this cold weather. It is simple and cheerful and a drama full of sincerity."

PD Kim Young-jo said "The unique point with our drama is trying to approach the essence. We seem to be living everyday finding wrong answers by desire, comparison with others, endless amount of news, etc. on the question 'Who am I?'. Even though we have many memories, we still don't know who we are. Geum-bi is only 10 years old, so she does not have many memories. And she is losing her memories. With that 10 years' worth of memory, with Geum-bi's presence, we will think what life we have lived, and I will do my best on that. It is story of a young kid who relay the real value of life to the grownups who live barren life in reality. If I was concerned about the competing(ratings-wide) dramas, I wouldn't have directed this drama. But the theme was too good to pass. I thought it could be a valuable drama being centered around a family. There are tendency people who are trying to find a good value through TV are ignored, I hope we can find new value and this drama makes it, so that next drama can do well too." Kim talked about child actress. "Heo Jung-eun is 10 years old, and doing a difficult project. I am taking that into account, and have her to take a nap. I feel like casts themselves are drama."

Female lead Park Jin-hee said "Now that I am married to have my own family, I seem to get attracted to a project which portraits the love of family more. This is a drama talking about the life through a child, and it will show one more time what the most important truth and truth you want to ignore even though you know are."

Male lead Oh Ji-ho said "I knew about the rival dramas. I don't think you evaluate a drama with ratings, even though I think it is important. This drama's ultimate weapon is Heo Jung-eun(Geum-bi). What we want to show is that we are trying to do really warm and thick acting. How much we can touch and warm the viewers' hearts will be the show's strength."

Child actor Heo Jung-eun who played with park Bo-gum in 'Moon light' and Park Sin-yang in 'Neighborhood lawyer Jo Deul-ho' before said "Uncle Park Sin-yang taught me well about acting, and Park Bo-gum oppa played well with me. Uncle Oh Ji-ho teaches me well about acting and plays well with me."

TGIF!

Almost done with college. Which is totally yay! Because I worked hard and am so done with school. Been in it since I was 2 ?

Now comes the question of what is next. I thought I was sure of what to do. But I've been getting mixed advice. And the thought of disappointing anyone is kinda still paralyzing, especially for this 21 year old who had just started discovering positive self-esteem.

Ah! Putting those thoughts on hold because weeks of depressing OTs is sad. At least there's Kdramas and Spotify! Mainly Louis-ah. Less than 2 eps left for me. This comedy of characters demands a rewatch.

Congratulations on being at the end of your college years! I remember finishing at 22, getting married 10 days later (he liked me, I liked him, we were NOT pregnant, and we both hated the mind games push-pull thing, so why not?), and thinking that I'd never have to read another book or write another paper again. Almost 15 years later, we're still married, I have stacks of books to read for pleasure, and I try to write when I can. As for my degree (liberal arts bachelor's), I've never used it towards any job I've held. I've been in either the clerical or medical/dental assisting fields instead, heh. So best wishes on finding employment in something you enjoy, and be open to learning new skills that may have nothing to do with your degree. Congrats again!

Hong Jong-hyun(26) who played 3rd prince Wang Yo in 'Moon Lovers' had an interview.[STAR NEWS] Hong was a model and debuted in the movie 'frozen flower' in 2008. He felt burdened about playing Wang Yo character. "Whenever I have a new project, I feel burdened, but the biggest burden was playing an evil character. I worked hard and am satisfied to a certain degree because there were quite a few people who thought I was really wicked. Finishing a show always gives me same feeling. I feel relieved and regretful at the same time, but because my character was pitiful at the end in this show, I felt sad. In this drama, my mother (played by Park Ji-young) and I were outright villain characters, so I agonized over how I could portray Wang Yo well. I wanted to show confidence all the time. I tried to show "Since I am about to become the king, I am different from you all" and "I say these things to you, and even if I kill you, that is given". I acted thinking "That way when Wang Yo loses, the gap among various emotions including his guilt can not be too big."

He felt sorry for his character. "There is something sad with Wang Yo. I think his mother is real evil. I wondered if he became such horrible person if he grew up in different circumstances. The reason he didn't want to lose any of his and take things away from others were due to his mother's influence. He grew up watching So who had scar on his face and was abandoned, hearing constant reminder "You have to become the king", so he never have thought he could not become the king. I think he tried to be even more evil because he worried he might lose his mother's love if he couldn't meet her expectations. I think he grew up with the idea "It is ok for me to do that" and that is why he could kill his brothers cold." As the most memorable scene, Hong picked when Wang Yo fell into superstition because he was losing his mind thinking someone might take his throne away. "It was the situation Wang Yo fell into delusion because he was weak physically and mentally and he didn't have anyone to depend on. I was worried about the scene. I had to do chanting, and when I asked "What should I chant?" PD-nim said to just murmur. I think I said all kinds of things. I wanted to express Yo's desperate attempt to survive even by depending on superstitions. But at the same time, he was not completely out of mind. With the line "Jung is eyeing for the throne?" I wanted to give scary feeling Yo still could do more."

Wang Yo had no love line. Hong said "I thought it would be nice if there were a loveline. I wondered how Wang Yo's romance would be portrayed. But once the war began over throne and my character became active, my disappointment disappeared. When there were cute nice scenes among others, I was the only one giving death glare. I think I have to wait for next opportunity. Still for very short time with Yeon-hee, even though it was one-sided, I think the scene showed how Wang Yo would treat the woman." About playing a villain role for the first time, Hong said, "It was fun. I did it at my heart's content thinking "When can I send this glare to people ever again?" If He was an evil who was only expressed as bad, there wouldn't have had any charm. But because they showed how he grew up, how he had the moment of change, the viewers seemed to understand and like him."

About his glamorous costume and accessories, Hong said "It was Kim Kyu-tae director-nim's idea. He said it might be nice if there was some unique point with Wang Yo, and there were plenty of make-up and accessories in that time period. And Wang Yo had this pressure that he had to be pretty, so I think they put the most attention on his costume and make-up among all male characters. I talked with the jewelry designer like "I want those have more gold tone" -things like that. I also used items which have a couple feel with my mother (Queen who had sizzling chemistry with him :) ?). I applied eyeliner thinking "It might help to express a strong character. It was new experience because there were people who had less accessories than me among all male and female casts. Make up and accessories felt awkward at first, but later I got so used to it that I felt something missing if I didn't do it." He lost 7kg during shooting. "Since Wang Yo dies at the end having hard time, I thought I might have to lose weight, but I lost more than I expected. I was shocked I lost 7kg. While shooting the drama, even though I ate well, I had irregular schedule, had stress, and couldn't do workout, so I lost the weight and ended up befitting to the failing Wang Yo character well." His unique hair style and beard look in the show gave idea for parody. "I think there were thousands of parodies about it. At first I thought "I am playing an evil character so he should be shown as a bad person, but people make funny parody about him, would this be good?" but later on I thought it was welcoming interests about my character. Assuming it takes long time and effort to make something like that, I thought it was love and interests from the viewers, and even posted on my SNS. That made people to make even more parody."

About working with other actors, Hong said "(Lee) Joon-gi hyung does well from the get-go, and (Kang) Ha-neul has been doing well. I am a type who takes time to get used to, but once I got familiar with people and place, I felt comfortable and did well. Ha-neul was same age as me. Since there are not many dramas with many male actors in them, I filmed having fun. As we became close, our chemistry became naturally better. I was going to have competitive spirit toward Joon-gi hyung, because we were prideful characters, and I had to show Wang Yo who hate to lose. The other friends were all playful on the set. I didn't have anyone else to compete against. Everyone's character and personality was different."

He received the good response like "He seems to have met his life character". "I think biggest gain is that I showed I had this side of my acting. I have done similar, cold and city-like characters so much that I had a thirst for a character I have not done before, with desire for new challenge. (About next project) Now that I played an evil character, I want to play even more wicked character. Also I went to action school diligently, but because Wang Yo was the character who hated blood getting to him due to his fastidious obsession, and only killed by shooting the arrow from afar, I didn't have a chance doing action. At the same time, a merry and sunny character like the one in 'Meet the In-Laws 2' is also attractive. I like to become an actor who people say "How amazing he can act when his background is modeling?"

@fan - thank you so much for translating this about Scarlet Heart, it's good to hear from the actors now that the drama is over. Hong Jong-hyun did really well as Wang Yo, and it sounds like he enjoyed playing the villain a lot.

(and lol @him choosing accessories that gave off a 'couple feel' with his mother!)

Thanks for the translation, fan!

I enjoyed watching HJJ in ENEMIES IN-LAW... as an antidote to Wang Yo's badness. I'd also seen him a year or so ago in ONE STEP MORE TO THE SEA -- and didn't even recognize him in MOON LOVERS.

He certainly had the "death glare" down pat. And I love what he had to say about coordinating his accessories with Mom.

*flashes back to scene in the bath*

Really, I thought he did a great job making a major villain sympathetic, even tragic.

I hope he does another sageuk. He looks great in the duds, and needs an opportunity to put that action school training to good use.

okay, this make ML more upsetting. So much potential, how every character can have many layers, not just one dimentional. So much story to tell (and the cast lining). And the production team really destroy it!

IKR, everybody was doing their best. But somehow the show managed to become this unsatisfying. I wonder who/what the culprits behind the editing and writing mess. Was there probably some BTS drama revolving the production team, the TV station and the sponsor? Anthony might know the answer. Let's ask him.

0

There was a question while I watched tvN's 'Entourage'. The drama portrays the story of a top star and his three friends who live together (well, except one) and do everything together. There was an article answering my question.[OSEN]
"Do the grown men really live together and go around in a bunch like that?" Answer is "Yes".
A staff in a management company for some idol singer said, "Friends centered around the singer like the ones shown in 'Entourage' actually exist. Usually 3-4 people act together, and just like in drama, they try to be help and sometimes get projects on their own for the singer, and gets in the conflicts with the company. And there are friends like Lee Dong-hwi(Turtle) who have no specific wish, but always stay close like a shadow of the singer."

A CEO of a management company said about an actor who they manage, "Just like the show, his friends are living with him in the same house and he takes care of his friends. From the company's point of view, they are not helpful at all, but they are very meaningful existence for the actor." One PR chief in an agency where a hallyu idol belongs to said "Similar to what is shown in the show, his friends joins him in all kinds of occasions. They are not especially helpful or harmful, but sometimes they become the seed of conflicts between the star and his company." He compared them to 'chicken ribs'(weakness or something that one hesitates to give up even though it is of little interest).

One stylist said "A celebrity I know is actually living with his friends in the same house and he takes care of them. Among them there are people who want to become a celebrity themselves. There are people who try to attract attention talking about his connection with the celebrity in a crowded place. Watching 'Entourage' makes me think that that side in the entertainment world is same in Korea or overseas."

Then what could be the reason for a star to move around with a group of his friends. People say it is because stars are lonely.
A CEO of an agency where a long-time top actor belongs to said, "Among celebrities, there are many who are lonely and don't trust others, even though they look cheerful outwardly. Those people keep long time (childhood) friends close by, and tend to depend on them a lot. Even though they might make a bad choice because of those friends, basically they keep trust-worthy(they believe) people around them, creating mental defense structure."

Interesting!

I've just now counted my Beanies and I'm shocked as its counted to 24 and this doesn't include some of the major dramas like Signal, My Dear Friends, W which I'm planning to watch before the end of this month. I realised I haven't watched a single old K-drama this year and started Kim Sam Soon which was long impending.

The only K movie I watched this year is Train to Busan.

Pride is the only Dorama I watched this year.

Now I'm eagerly waiting for the dramabeans awards of this year to vote for my nominees.

Not watching any airing kdramas - Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo well and truly knocked the stuffing out of me, and I realise that leaves me only what.... eight beans to vote on end-of-year with? This is the lowest number of kdramas I've watched in a single year since 2012. I don't have the will to pick up any new dramas, even ones featuring people I love. I think maybe I'll revisit some of Lee Jun-ki's older ones, or Producer - I enjoyed that one a lot at the time.

Happy Friyay beanies!

Finished JI last night and I'm so sad! I loved this show, even with it's wacky twists and weird stuff, I LOVED all the fun and humor this show had - and it maintained that right till the finale. JJS is pure gold. Someone just give this man an award please.

Other than JI, I've been pretty bored on the drama front - dropped K2, put Shopping King and Drinking Solo on hold cause I just wasn't in the mood for either, I started 1% of anything but it just isn't giving me the feels I want.

Le sigh.

JI is such a treat that other dramas I am watching concurrently pale into comparison. I like Louis, 1% well enough to continue but to me they are just the better done usual tropes, nothing like the layers and thrills that JI gives me. It is certainly taking a top spot in my 10-year drama list.

Further, it has the BEST EVER ENDING despite the rather controversial view on Na RI's career choice. Yes, it is not we want but this writer has never set out to give us what we expect. Our dream ending is to see NR and HS anchoring 9 pm news side by side. But at the end of day this drama is about following your heart, be it the choice of life partner or career. And NR had that opportunity of pursuing the most ideal husband and reaching the highest career goal - but she follows her heart. It's consistent through and through.

Happy Friday Everyone!

I had been anxious in the days leading up to the election and the eventual result has really given me pause for thought about my own bubble and where to go from there. On a brighter note Jealousy Incarnate ended brilliantly and it was oh so satisfying. I love Na-ri and Hwa-shin but in the final episode it really was the relationships between the side characters that shone through for me, especially the Sung-sook and Ja-young friendship. JI's now my favourite drama alongside with Soulmate.

My drama slate is now completely cleared, except for When a Snail Falls in Love which to be honest I had sort of forgotten about until this Open Thread.

Love Rain - I only have the final ep to go and I mostly powered through because of my love for Jang Geun Suk...honestly the parent's love line is really boring (first 4 eps were so.slow.) but I've enjoyed a lot of aspects of the show such as OST, cinematography, and I think the fact that the dialogue is delivered with a lot of pauses would bother me if I spoke Korean but since I don't, I've actually been able to pick up on a few words since they spoke them at a very slow pace so this might be a good drama to help learn Korean? maybe lol

Happy Friday to all you Beanies!!! I hope your Friday was just as well-spent as mine (donuts, k-dramas, oh my!).

On other news, I wanted to broach a topic with all of you today. So lately I started noticing my k-dramas pile, and I shit you not, when I counted all my currently-watching k-dramas, I had 23 in total. TWENTY-THREE. And they were all accumulated since a year ago.

It was from then that I realized I had this habit of dropping a k-drama when it's in its second half. It's not because I hate it or I love it, there isn't much of that in factor. For example, I find Beautiful Gong Shim endearing and cute, and I blew through the first five eps. But now I'd placed it on-hold at ep 10, for no reason!

Does anyone else have this same problem? What IS this strange habit? I like to coin it as "Drama Disinterest Syndrome", because it's not about putting off a drama to savor it later, but it's just because I feel the sudden need to drop it, just like that. Years or months or weeks later, I might feel compelled to pick it up again!

Fellow DDS sufferers, let's all share stories and maybe find a cure to this weird habit of ours together. Hwaiting!

well many Kdrama has love-stories as the driven force so when it achieved and you already pictured how other problems they have is easily solved with all the clues everywhere, I tend to just put it on hold,
- like the goal is already achieved, they are a couple and all those people realistically can't hold them down

- sometimes the humour or the melodramatic story doesn't work to me so I put in on hold too,

- sometimes kdrama put too much of cliffhanger to make people watch the next episode but it's not that important, it's like what is the girl gonna said to the man, will she gonna said yes or no?
or like the male asking a question and it cut off before the answer, you wait the whole week and the answer is a letdown,

reminds me of an article from the blog called kkuljaem that showed poll about people who doesn't watch the last episode because they already knew how it ends,

that's from me,
the solution is that they need to make another goal for the couple beside having a romantic relationship that somehow cures other illness/problems they have,
if it gonna be the journey of a couple, then show it than making them separating and then connecting them over and over again,
One separation is enough but multiple because they have changing of heart?

I think my case with this decease is REALLY serious, I start drama and after ep 8 or nine I simply forget about them. It happens with 70% of shows I watch. Actually I don't think I regret it, I droped CITT when it was still good and I still haven't finished 49 days. I like happy drama so when they go on angsty/rediculous rode I leave them.
Moonlight, bad guys, Misaeng and Louis, I am sorry, I heard you were perfect till the end.... but maybe someday I'll feel like watching you again...or not, after all there are tons of good dramas starting next week

Similar comment was posted here several weeks ago. I actually face the same problem. I have kind of dropped so many dramas after finishing 65-80% of episodes. At the same time i picked new dramas. This clearly portrays that i lost interest in story and characters by the time show had started to prepare for final episodes.

e.g - I watcher healer 17 episodes in 5 days in the month of May and then bam started to watch a few ongoing drama and it still is in my watch list.
Fated to love you watched 19 and half episode in May and still put it in watch list. Numerous other shows dropped.

I think majority of the reason lies with show itself. Writer-Director put efforts in 1st 3 weeks and later on just drag the little plot as much as possible with all the makjang. This causes characters to lose their own personality[if any they had] and they become something like mix vegetables soup.

Other reason is shift in interest. Dramas are like love. A new drama and you are attracted towards it. But after several weeks all the enthusiasm evaporates and you enter into Marriage like territory. You just don't feel the extra excitement of love.

Haha, I definitely have thoughts on this particular topic, just not the time to share them all. I just wanted to share this very relevant post I came across recently: http://kkuljaem.blogspot.com/2016/11/viewers-skip-last-episodes-of-dramas.html

We're definitely not the only ones to experience this! I remember the first drama to do this to me was YFAS, of all the shows. I enjoyed it a lot, but somehow didn't feel the need to finish the last 3 episodes after I weirdly got obsessed with Let's Eat towards the end of its run. I still haven't been able to cut ties with my "plans" to finish, lol. Even though it's been years now and I still haven't felt the pull to do so.

This is precisely why it's amazing for me when a drama like JI comes along, that somehow has me wishing for more, even after it's done. It had 24 episodes to lose my interest and yet somehow managed never to do so. If anything, it makes me realize that maybe there's a reason I don't continue certain dramas and I should just accept it. After all, if there are dramas I actually feel like savoring every moment of, why should I spend my time hanging on to those that don't make me feel that way? That said, every now and then, I will successfully go back to a drama like that and feel rewarded for giving it that second shot.

I think JI never relied on the typical rom com sequence i.e. to wait for the leads to be together. It was like going through the lives of HS and NR and the people around them and that's what I liked best. It did not focus on one particular thing, it was just like you are watching them go through relationships, breakups, hardships-generally their life.

^THIS.

A kdrama hasn't maintained my interest until its finale for a very long time now, but then comes alone Jealousy Incarnate with 24 episodes, and I'm still left feeling like I could watch 24 episodes more. And I agree, it's definitely because the storytelling structure doesn't hinge on the resolution of external conflicts or the couple getting together as the end goal; it's really about sitting back and enjoying how the characters - secondary characters included - work through their relationships, work through office antics, and work on themselves as people. Which I think is ultimately the main charm of Jealousy Incarnate.

Agreed!

Why watching JI is a treat? Because you can really sit back as a viewer and let the writer take you on this journey to witness the struggles and triumphs of the characters. Yes, it does require some trust from us on the writer but I had watched Pasta and Miss Korea and have that faith. I still remember the criticism of Pastas as having 'no plot at all'. But looking back, I feel it's kind of sad that we viewers have been conditioned to have certain expectations of what and how a drama should be like. So, when a gem likes JI come along you see all the uproars and different opionions driven primarily by the conventional shipping war and the expectation of what a female lead should behave. In many ways, the female lead is pigeon-holed by those expectations, rather than acting like what a real person will do. It is SAD.

Just wonder when the next JI will come along.

Unlike you, I don't even go back to the shows i've left. If I leave them then they probably never piqued my interest. I have seen many dramas in 2016 but the only ones I have finished are Marriage Contract, W and now Jealousy Incarnate. I think Sancheezy is right, there should be another point of conflict despite the leads being together in rom coms for instance. i'm only interested till the leads are together and if there's nothing else to it, i get bored and drop it. I also think one can generally stay longer with thrillers or mystery because romance isn't the main theme in there, so you might stay till the end but they are not exactly my cup of tea.

What I like best is what korea makes least i.e. slice of life dramas but surprisingly I do not get attached to j-doramas who make tons of slice of life dramas, probably because of their new episode new stuff format that reminds me of American tv.

I find myself dropping more and more dramas lately...I don't like weird leads or over-the-top characters or dramas that just bore me. Am down to only 3 dramas that I really enjoy right now as 3 ended in past week. Really enjoying Laurel Tree Tailor Shop. Time to catch up on some oldies I guess while I'm waiting for some I like.

I drop dramas much earlier if the beginning doesn't gel with me. I remember dropping You Who Came From the Stars after episode 2 - had actually put it on hold, but just never bothered to get back to it again cuz the show just felt stupid (even if I did like the leads). Did the same for Empire of Gold and a few others.

Interestingly, both of the shows that I enjoyed this year - Beautiful Mind and Jealousy Incarnate - have been picked up around the halfway mark. I'd spent the first half just reading recaps, and occasionally catching bits on TV, but something suddenly clicked and I ended up finishing the entire lot.

Okay, I will make confession here.
If "watching drama" means to watch every scene without skipping, FF button, or reads spoiler, then the only kdrama I watch this year is Signal.
Thanks to kdrama recaps which can be found easily everywhere, I mostly read recaps and if it interesting I will watch some particular scene. In some occasion, may be watch full episode for the first couple eps and the final week eps.
Even with that I drop a lot drama recaps, in some case drop it completely or in other case read the final eps recap for closure.
It do save a lot of time!

Unlike my jdorama watch list which keep increasing. Fortunately, it's just 45x10 eps in average.

Happy Friday, everyone~!
I have yet to watch Moon Lovers as sageuks aren't my cup of tea. Last weekend, while switching channels on TV, I stumbled upon the final episode of ML and decided to check it out. A certain young actor caught my attention, and no, it was not Lee Jun Ki, Kang Ha Neul or Ji Soo. I have no idea who he is, and would appreciate it if anyone could tell me his name. He seems to be as tall as Ji Soo, and is taller than Lee Jun Ki. There was a scene in which all three of them appeared together. I find his acting natural as he does not overact, and oh, he is good-looking, too hehehe. What are his prior works, and does he have an upcoming drama? I'll definitely check out his previous dramas. Thanks in advance to anyone who does reply. Have a relaxing weekend ahead~!

Good morning Beaners around the world. I thank all those who serve this country USA to make it great. I hope the madness post elections died or be gone and everyone move on to great things in USA. I want us to move forward not backward.

I stopped watching Korean dramas for now due to watching Chinese drama. I am loving When Snail fall in love. However, I do wish they do small cases instead of one big case.

I am also watching Legend of Chusen. I am on episode 21. I am still waiting for Xain Fan wearing all black. I heard there will be second season and hopefully it meant that he will be gone to dark side soon. I might watch Goblin or Guem Bi drama due to other new dramas I can read the recap.

I hope everyone have a wonderful weekend and enjoy life to its fullest.

I was upset with the election result even though I'm not an American. I stayed away from the news even up to today, and refused to talk about it to anybody.

But, last night I was able to joke around a bit with my husband about it. "At least now we can say to the Americans, pffftt, look at your president...."

And yet again, k-dramas are my go-to stress reliever.

I'm unsure how I would have felt regardless of who won, but either way I wish people here would be a bit more calm in demonstrating their displeasure. There's been a lot of violent disrespect (chaotic protests, flag burning etc.) in politics the last decade or so, and the pre-post election actions on both sides of the political spectrum lately have been frankly disheartening.

I feel like I agree with your statement, except it describes the whole of politics, too.

I dunno why people are so surprised by the protesting. We had the same thing happen in the last two elections as well. But it's been happening for years now. People have been reacted similarly in the past as well. Not just the last 10 years. It just wasn't covered. We've have had the same shenanigans with violence and disruption. Considering how powerless people truly are in this country, it's pretty much the only right we truly have left for people to exercise and express their anger collectively. All we have left is our right to free speech. Considering how much disrespect politicians show the people every day I could care less if the protests are disrespectful.

Still, I've been super bummed about the elections so I almost didn't tune into JI this week but ended up watching 1% of Anything first to get some cheer back which surprisingly was really helpful.

I understand them protesting but it really needs to stop. We have been voting this like for ages! It's how all of our past presidents have been elected. It's the same way Obama got elected! People need to move on and work on being united.

Trump prolly won because people are tired of democats being in office and they want a change. I don't like it either but we have to carry on. Accept and move on.

All this protesting is getting out of hand.

@Carryon and @Quinze, I understand protesting and I agree it's an important constitutional right, it's mostly the disrespect over disagreeing that I found disheartening, because I think it's not condusive to finding a solution. That's what I really like about DB: when we disagree, we tend to keep it level headed (bar a few cases, for sure). But enough about politics! Dramas are better! Everybody watch... watch... is there a universally praised drama? Something everybody loves?

0

I disagree, people need to protest. They are registering their disappointment and they are giving notice to the President Elect that they will be watching him. Even if the GOP have the presidency, congress and senate and soon the Supreme court they will be watching what legislation will pass and registering their opposition.

Yes, thankfully, the criminal Hillary Clinton has been rejected. A tip of the hat to Julian Assange. His work with WikiLeaks was a key part of defeating the beast.

Clinton withered like a vampire when the brilliant light of the truth exposed her crooked ways. Take that George Soros.

Trump was a mastermind, bring about not one but two political dynasties, Bush and Clinton, to tumultuous ruin. Bye bye crooked Loretta Lynch. So long lying sleazebag FBI Director Comey.

See ya, Huma. Huma's Weiner got caught in a rat trap.

Even better, Trump will be picking replacements for any Supreme Court vacancies.

American "democracy" is a farce. In a system where presidents have won through the electoral vote but not the popular vote not once, twice but five times? You are going to sit here and act like this country was built on something other than genocide and enslavement. You know idk who you are exactly but your precious founding fathers that the right jerk themselves off to every night didnt even want anyone who wasnt a white male property owner to vote.

Also lmfao at the right not throwing temper tantrums? The left has its issues for sure, but they're protesting the fact that people's lives are under attack. The right to remind you wet their pants over starbucks cups, LGBT people, gay wedding cakes, Obama etc. The right like Rep Joe Walsh was ready to take the streets if Trump lost but the left are throwing temper tantrums. The right cry about being told Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas in the time period between November and December(which encompasses several major religious holidays lol). Also do i need to bring up the images of the right throwing a temper tantrum that Obama a black man won?

Reminding myself that we shouldn't feed the trolls... but the sane people will be laughing all the way when the Orange Cheeto Mussolini is impeached within his first year of "service" for high crimes and misdemeanors, collusion with Russia, bank fraud with trackable overseas accounts that are already on the IMF's radar, 75 (and counting) lawsuits against him and his "companies," and a child rape case hanging over his head. If he doesn't have a massive heart attack first.

But by then, you'll probably be living in a cardboard box under a bridge with no healthcare coverage, no blue-collar job, and no hope left when a Rethuglian Congress decides you do not deserve any basic rights... because that's what eventually happens to all trolls.

Oh, Jealousy Incarnate. Maybe if I list the ways I love you, I'll be able to let you go (someday?). I mean, have I mentioned how concerned I was about you being a 24 episode rom-com about love triangles? Because I was concerned, even with Gong Hyo-jin and Jo Jung-seok attached. And now, here we are, at the end. And I just want more of your bizarrely lovable characters on my screen.

Some things I loved about the final week:

1. Finally, we have a realistic 'attempt' at noble idiocy (which we all know is bound to fail when a couple actually knows & understands each other). I couldn't even get mad at Hwa-shin because we were shown his constant failed attempts at breaking up whenever he would think the words, only to come out with "Let's never break up!" instead, lol. JJS's delivery...just, ahhh, this guy. I savor every ridiculous, hopeless line he utters.

2. And we have a heroine who actually knows him enough to sense an issue and figure it out for herself! Uh, thank you, Pyo Na-ri. You get all the stars. Lol, she even saw through his "Let's never break up" and knew exactly what words he was trying, but failing to say to her before he finally succeeded in saying them. Love that she confronted the issue head-on & didn't let him get away with his BS. But, even more, I love that she was patient enough with him to let him come to terms with his issues.

3. What I love most of all, though? That after being patient with his half-assed attempt at noble idiocy, she finally just went and seduced it allll out of his system. Seriously, why has no k-drama character ever attempted this before (lol, no one really needs to answer that)? I finally figured it out! Noble idiocy exists in dramaland because of the constant restriction placed on any form of skin-ship beyond hand-holding and chaste kisses. Haha, Na-ri knew full well Hwa-shin would be a goner as soon as she turned his "sleep with me" back around on him. He never stood a chance.

4. And, lastly, thank you, Gong Hyo-jin and Jo Jung-seok for the most hilarious, sweet, and passionate love scene I've seen in a drama in years. This may seem shallow, but hey, it was well-acted & just lovely to see sex portrayed as something natural and joyous and beautiful. And for the girl to initiate it so boldly too! I mean, JJS always burns it up, but GHJ was seriously hot in this scene. I'm pretty sure she had me swooning just as much as him.

Haha, to think all these things I mentioned are in episode 23 alone. I would be here for hours if I got into everything I loved about the finale too! But I may be busy when the ep 23 recap posts so I needed to share my love somewhere. That said, I don't think it's helping me let go because now I just want to watch the final episodes all over again.

Ugh, it's been ages since I've experienced withdrawal symptoms to this degree. Help me.

I'm seriously so sad it's all over! We could have spent 20 more episodes over our side characters and HS-NR post wedding hijinks and I would have been happy to watch!

1. Like you said, JJS and his perfect delivery makes him look both pitiful and hilarious as he tries to be a noble idiot and fails at it.

2. I adore NR. She enjoys being a woman. She enjoy being soft and loving and being the one that shows more patience. Thing is, while most people find her to have no backbone, I feel like she has more of one than a lot of us do. A lot of would have walked away from HS because we would have felt disheartened. But even HS knows how unlikeable he can be. And to see NR just power through his antics because she knows he loves her and is being an idiot. Takes a special kind of will. She's like the eye of HS's hurricane-calm and centered.

3. I love though that by this point NR is just rolling her eyes at her dumb boyfriend being dumb again. Like she's essentially like I'll make my own decisions for myself thankyouverymuch. And did she not do what HS did a few episodes ago with the whole getting him worked up until he snaps and kisses her which she then uses as an opening to seduce him? HS tried it with the proposal but NR's too smart to fall for it lol.

4. Seriously, so much of their awesome chemistry is really just friendship and smiling and giggling in each other's presence. I feel like GHJ's giggles are more her than NR but I love it because so playful and cute without sacrificing the fact that they're both grown consenting adults that want to sleep with each other.

Yup, I wish they had more episodes to explore NR and HS early married life and them trying to have children. It's gonna be a riot. But, maybe it's better to end the drama while leaving us craving for more than to prolong it until we feel sick with it. Such enjoyable 24 episodes.

I reckon NR is the female lead with the highest EI ever. Witnessing how she rising over the odds quietly (as with her effective way of dealing with the obnoxious announcer Park) or the in-the-face pursuit of HS. It's a wow female character in the unconventional way which I hope more viewers would appreciate.

I am enjoying This Week My Wife Will Have an Affair tremendously. A bit sad that there don't seem to be many watching but it is really well-made. Three things stand out above the rest:

1. The main narrative is told solely from the male protagonist's point of view. Has this been done in any other drama before? I haven't come across any but you guys might.

2. Love the camerawork. Such attention to details. Overall a very high quality production value.

3. I am constantly surprised by the turn of events. Still don't know where we will end up.

4. Lee Seon-kyun's voice.

1% of Anything I think this drama is a model for others on how to do romance right. Though I'm not sure if chemistry is something that can be emulated. And the kisses! So real, hot and yummy :D

Other than 1%, I'm not watching any other kdrama at the moment. I am so hooked on When A Snail Falls In Love that I finish 3 eps in one go once it's up. Since that's not enough, I went back and picked up Love Me If You Dare again. I dropped it earlier but now, I am loving it.

Any good C dramas to recommend? Those which I have watched or currently watching have such good production quality. It's also refreshing to watch C style because I've become quite annoyed with a number of kdramas of late.

I strongly recommend Love O2O [love online to offline], which is a story about a couple college students who pair up in an online game, only to discover they're at the same school .... and are practically perfect for each other. It's based on a popular novel and the show adapts pretty much 98% faithfully with some filler material added for side characters which pads it out a little. However it works 12x better than the movie that was also made out of the book and which abridges far too much.

The show is notable for several reasons, in particular I loved the strong female lead. Unlike many shows where a girl is depicted as nerdy until she gets a makeover this woman is renowned as the most beautiful girl in the comp sci department but she simply has no time to date because she's so serious about her education. She also has to (very realistically) avoid letting her info leak online because she's concerned about online harassment. It also had subplots about online game group drama that were just like things I've personally been privvy to, and the sequences where they're playing their fantasy game look like a fun cheeseball fantasy tv show. Plus the male lead, Yang Yang, looks like he was crafted in a lab from DNA taken from Lee Joon Ki and Song Jae Rim. He is a Deadpan Snarker Ace.

I tried O2O based your recommendation. It's not bad – I do like the female lead who is fairly strong. The male lead isn't bad either (a bit too perfect maybe and I didn't like it that much that he knew for weeks who she was in real life, and "watched" her but didn't let her in on his real-life identity in the online game).

I wish though the supporting characters (friends and rivals alike) weren't all such airheads. I can't remotely relate to the incessant talk about the "school beauty", the "department beauty" or EVERY SINGLE GIRL fawning over the lead, blatantly staring at him and running to wherever he appears on campus. To me that's incredibly rude, immature & air-headed, nor does it make sense – people don't 100% have the same taste. Also, it's one thing winning the "school beauty" title in a short-lived competition, but I just can't buy when all girls (and boys) seem truly believe that Yi-ran is the most beautiful and the only one that anyone might ever have eyes for. *rolls eyes*

I'm known in my family as an avid reader. I average 2-3 books a month for fun and even took up a double minor in college (literature, of course) so that I can fit in my reading. That was until I discovered K-dramas last year.

I didn't realize how much it had overtaken my life until this morning. My dad sent me a picture of a mug that said "I'm not addicted to BOOKS - we're in a commit relationship".

Normally that would be a true statement - I read the whole Harry Porter series over a Thanksgiving weekend a few years back. Thanksgiving weekend is coming up. I haven't selected which books I'm going to read. Instead I've selected the Kdrama's that I'm going to binge watch over the long weekend.

What's worse, is I just realized that I haven't read a single book, for entertainment, the entire year! How did this happen? Can anyone relate to this?

I do still keep up on some webtoons, though, and recently--because I realized I hadn't read anything for fun in forever--I picked up Jingo by Terry Pratchett and started reading The Problem of Pain by CS Lewis.

I wish I could watch more over Thanksgiving! My family isn't into Kdrama at all like I am though, and I think they'll want to spend time with me rather than let me binge watch. Oh well, C'est la vie!

Unfortunately. Fortunately? I'm single and don't live anywhere near my family. So my long weekends are mine to do as I please. For me that means snuggling up with a good book....err...television, these days.

I tried to get my family hooked. My sister outright refused because she's heard of their addictive qualities:).

I've never heard of Terry Pratchett but, I love the fantasy genre. I'll have to check him out. Maybe I will make a deal with myself. For ever 4 Kdramas I watch, I will read a book. Yes, that sounds like a plan.

Enjoy you time with your family!

For fantasy, try Neil Gaiman as well, he's really good. He also co-wrote a novel, Good Omens, with Terry Pratchett.

@rentenmann,
Me too! Do you also like Gaiman's stuff? If so, which ones?

0

Thanks! I do love my family, I just... also love dramas, hehe. A few of my siblings have shown interest, but more because they're interested in spending time with me than the dramas themselves. As for Terry Pratchett, he has my highest recommendation, I love his work. RIP, he is missed.

I'd start with:
Going Postal
Mort
Guards! Guards!

Any one of those will start you on a sub series of Discworld, his fantasy Universe. All are superb.

Yes! I love CS Lewis! I haven't actually read tons of his work, but what I have I love. If not soul mates, then we should at least be kindred spirits or bosom friends (I like Anne of Green Gables, hee). So far the Screwtape Letters are my favorite, but I haven't read the Great Divorce yet, I've heard it's good. Have you heard of CS Lewis' Sci-Fi series? Out of the Silent Planet is the first one I think, I might read them.

Love Screwtape Letters...the devils eating the devils, isn't that how it always goes? The Great Divorce starts out a bit murky, but then gets good. I have the sci-fi books, which my friend's rave about, but sci-fi setting puts me off and I read mainly nonfiction. But they are considered great studies of the human soul, so if you can, definitely read them!

0

Super interesting! Those are the books (and dramas, and stories) I love the best: ones that analyze humanity. That's why I love CS Lewis, Terry Pratchett, and some of the dramas I do. Glad to have another fan for Lewis!

0

Wow, another reader of Screwtape!!!

Read it many years ago... and loved the image of Hell as a bureaucracy full of back-stabbing colleagues waiting to pounce.

IIRC, Lewis and JRR Tolkien were buddies.

I read the Space Trilogy in college... but that was so long ago that I can't recall much more than the titles... Perelandra being one of them. I'm actually more of a Heinlein fan when it comes to sci-fi. With a side of Vernor Vinge, whose novella True Names foreshadowed the Web via which we are conversing. -- Oh, and a sprinkling of Arthur C. Clarke and H. P. Lovecraft. Plus Isaac Asimov's "Lucky Starr" juvenile fiction back in the day.

In my youth I read all the Sherlock Holmes stories, and then moved on to G.K. Chesterton's "Father Brown" mysteries...

0

@ PakalanaPikake fun fact, I went to England this last year and ate dinner in the pub where Lewis, Tolkien and the other two Inklings (their writers' group) met. It was awesome.

I've never heard of Father Brown, I'll have to check it out!

0

@34.1.2.1.4 Cozybooks

I found one of Chesterton's Father Brown stories for you online -- the only title I could dredge out of my memory: "The Hammer of God." Now I have to re-read it myself. ;-)

I think it was my dear Mama who introduced me to Chesterton... But beyond his whodunits, I knew nothing about him. I was boggled to read the thumbnail sketch linked below, and I have an "inkling" that you will be, too... seeing as you're such a fan of CSL.

PS -- What great fun to visit the site where the Inklings gathered. ;-)

Sorry about that, chief! Here's the "Hammer of God" link I forgot to include in the previous post:

Yes I relate because I spent my youth reading a lot and loved books so much I changed my major to Literature in college and graduated with said degree (I make a living with this degree too yay!) Anyway I read so much in college (we're talking 2-3 novels a week!) that when I graduated I didn't crack a book open for like a year. Then I felt so bad because my reading list was piling up because I still wanted to read...you see I spent the year after college catching up on TV that I had missed out on during college, because during college I kept telling myself "l'll watch all the TV shows everyone else is watching once I graduate"

So 2 years out of college I finally started to read some books for enjoyment and finished a few...but then halfway into my 2nd year out of college I watched Secret Garden (my first kdrama). I'm so obsessed with kdrama now that it's all I watch on my down time so no books have been read. Now I'm about to hit the 3rd year mark out of college, and I have a ridiculously large pile of books on my bookshelf that need to be read.

I do carry a book around with me in my work bag in case I'm ever somewhere really bored and want to read. Yet when I'm actually out bored somewhere I open kdrama blogs on my smartphone instead, oops!

Anyway I'm telling myself I'll read a few books during these end of year holidays but we'll see...I'll most likely just end up binge watching dramas :P

Yes, it happens to me! I'm known for supposedly being an avid reader, but the PhD plus Kdrama has left me reading nothing. When I get asked 'so what are you reading for pleasure?' I squirm and sort of confess: 'nothing... but I'm learning a lot about Asian history and culture by watching Korean dramas'. That shocks people into going 'ooh, how alternative!' lol

@Misiress
I feel you.
There were time when I can finish at least 5 books in a week (if I include manga, it will be triple). It's like I always have a book on my hand everytime, I read while eating, while walking, in the bus, even in class (either under the table or hide it on my textbook from my teacher).
And suddenly work take over, more drama to watch, and here I am, Goblet of Fire in front of me. I still buy new books regularly like before, but somehow I find myself end up re-reading Lord of the Ring or Musashi and it's Harry Potter this week. And worse, my reading speed is decreasing, like I'm savouring word by word and not just read it as sentence like before.
Outside than tendency, I can read book while watching news or drama on tv because I understand the language (eyes on book, ears on tv), but not with drama as I need to read the subtitle.
So, my book list pilling up faster than my drama list.
(how I wish I can read some book under the table during meeting).

I feel you! Up until college I was a HUGE book reader. Like I almost got detention in the 6th grade because I would read books during class when we were supposed to be following along with the textbook (only I'd read the textbooks ahead of time at the beginning of the year...).
College meant too many science classes to find time to read for entertainment so the only other books I read were French literature for my other major with the occasional other book here and there (think Half Blood Prince came out while I was in college).
Now I've had two side books sitting in my ipad forever that I've barely made a dent in for months now because...kdramas. And when not that or school...British comedy shows and US TV shows.

I feel so bad about neglecting my precious books!

I'm always late to OTs.

Me me! *raises hand* I can totally relate! I have loved reading since I was young. I even won an ward when I was in grade 3 for borrowing the most books in a year (257 books, I still remember the number!) I was called a bookworm by my sister. I always had a book under my arm wherever I went. I even sacrificed sleep to finish books. Now I sacrifice sleep for kdramas, lol. Mum would yell at me to go to sleep because it's a school night. I'd wait until all lights are out and the house is quite, then whip out my book under the blanket covers with my torch light. I did this throughout Primary to the point where my eyesight deteriorated from reading in bad light and I had to get glasses! That didn't really faze me and I kept reading. It was animes first that replaced my reading then kdramas. I still loving and want to read but it's very hard with all the kdramas and animes to watch. I have to force myself to read or I won't get around to it. Either that or if there isn't much good kdramas or animes showing, then I'd crack open a book. I remember it took me ages to finish the Empire Trilogy and at the last book, I went overseas to Cambodia to see extended family and they were in the countryside where there was no internet, no TV, nothing to do that I was able to finish off the Empire Trilogy, lol. I had a LOT of time on my hands.

I have a shelf of new books I've bought and collected over the years that I haven't touched. I'm currently trying to finish (been stuck for so long now) A Song of Ice and Fire - A Dance with Dragons. Yes I watch the TV show too, but not the latest season as I really want to read the book first. I still haven't opened the last book of the Obernewtyn Chronicles - The Red Queen. I had been waiting forever for it too and was so excited when it was released. There's also the Wheel of Time series (14 books or something), about 6 Jodi Picoult books, and other books. I keep buying, keep filling up my book shelf but no time to read. I always complain to my husband that I don't have enough hours in a day.

Okayy.. so.. when's pairing adult male actors with minor female actresses gonna stop? It's gross that the underage have to act intimacy on set and constantly assure people in the interviews that they're comfortable w/ that and all.

It's even more gross when people actually ship them in real life, making hundreds of inappropriate edits on different websites. And the intimacy, kisses, etc. they have to act out in romance based k-dramas make me legit uncomfortable. I couldn't watch an episode of 'Let's fight ghost' and 'MDBC' ending scene was just.. ugh..

And the messy comments on dramabeans (the ones looooving the pairing and commenting on how exited they're to see their on-screen chemistry). See, because of these messy people, PDs are discouraged to cast actually adult actresses in their twenties to dramas. And y'all don't have to get butthurt and comment that they're professional actors and it's their job or w/e. Normalizing what is wrong is never okay. DAmn *rant over*

I find 6 years old gap is okay,
especially when kim so hyun next year is 18 and yoo seung ho is 24,
if we can't talk about actor professionality then should a person can't hold a part time job with an adult just because they are a 17 years old ?
or should a 17 years old who perfectly know what they did hold back in taking singing and dancing as a job because they aren't adult,

I am not fond of the ghost drama but I think moonlight drama is not offensive,

then should a young looking male suffer the burden of being supported character cause they can't fit the male hero as in looked older than the heroine?
should it always be noona romance cause the male lead looked too young to be in the same age,

if they both adult, as in 20-26, would the complaint be this much?
17 for woman is old enough, and what they did in moonlight is PG-15, that does not even enter the adulthood skinship

Well, I hope Kim So Hyun is 18 by the time they'll start filming this drama. However I don't think you really understood what I meant with my comment. Of course minors can WORK with adults, but it's a different thing to act out adult level romance and intimacy. Again, it is not about age gap, but a minor being paired with an adult. Didn't they seriously find an actress in her twenties cause there are plenty, Kim Ji Won for example.

How much are we ready to stretch in the name of 'art'? Did people ever stop to think about the problem that actresses like KSH, KYJ and KSR are being paired with adult ass actors and they have to do romance with them? Right. This is certainly not the first time. PSH did have a kiss scene and other suggestive scenes in 'Cute or crazy' at the age of 16 with an actor in his forties and that was really uncomfortable to watch. So nothing has really changed in that aspect.

There's a far bigger problem behind the casting situations that entails more serious social issues than what we as viewers could see. I hope you understood what I meant. If you didn't then there's nothing really I can say to convince you other way.

-- but it’s a different thing to act out adult level romance and intimacy.

the young drama is not even that intimate and kim jiwon already looked too old to be paired as a younger character in late teens,

casting minor is problem when the minor didn't in mental state to know what they did, they are not 12 , they are 17!
so 17 years old have no idea about kissing at all and should not be kissing on screen at all?
it's a peck and not even a real kiss, they didn't have sex ala eungyo in the drama,

the social issue arise when they are underage and asked to portray more grown up woman and do the grown up woman sexuality things,
but if they are 17 and doing the 17 peck things is wrong, the idk when we should have make the boundary,

== I agree that minor shouldn't act mature role but it's not the case with Moonlight of the next year Kim soo hyun, cause they do not act for the age of above them, didn't not acted sexually above their age and they are consent on it .

they shouldn't be paired with man way beyond their age in romantic tension (as the example more than 8 years) but imo there's an exception if the man looked young (as the script asked for ) and the if the intimacy level is around the age of the heroine ==

also every 17years old gonna be minor-adult if we just talk about their age, how about 16-17, also minor-adult???

Well, Kim Go Eun was already an adult in 'The muse' so... 'minor-adult'.. uhmm okayyy.. yeah really nothing I can say anymore.
And I beg to differ, Kim Ji Won does not look too old to play a girl in her late teen, just like KGE didn't when she portrayed Eungyo, or PSH when she portrayed her various high school characters in the heirs, pinocchio and doctors now.

I don't mind with the underage actress to act with adult actor as long as no intimacy involved. I cannot imagine if that actress is my daughter or sister. Professional, yes. But there are certain limitation applied.

I started watching a lot of kdramas after hitting my head in a swimming pool this past summer and being on restricted activity/bedrest ever since. I still can't do any reading or listen to music much, and I have to keep the brightness on my computer screen at zero, but apparently kdramas don't require any brain activity. Ha!

So here's a question that's been bugging me for some time. Loose hair and top knots in sageuks. Do they follow any kind of consistent rule? Earlier this year I read a book called "Fifteen Years Among the Topknots", written by an American woman doctor who worked for the Korean Royal Court in the 1890s. Fascinating description of life at that time and a total letdown if you think sageuks are anywhere near realistic. Korea at that time was nowhere near as clean or sanitary. But she said that single men wore their hair long and had it done up in a knot when they got engaged. So, I watched Sungkyunkwan Scandal a couple months ago, and.....are ALL those Sungkyunkwan scholars engaged or married?? And I have that same question about every other sageuk I've ever seen with all the male romantic leads wearing topknots.

Those hairstyle does have a meaning and as I understand the people in sungkyungkwan does have sort of uniform, For Confucian scholars, they wear bokgeon (복건), a headdress made of black fabric. It later evolves and is used as a headdress for boys.

As for men, they only have two hairstyles : whether to bring the hair to the top and tie it into a knot known as sangtu (상투), or let it loose down,

Sangtu (상투): This was the ordinary hairstyle for the men of the Joseon Dynasty, especially among the noblemen and the scholars. The hair was pulled into a topknot and a headband, manggeon, was used to hold the hair in place. Manggeon was also used to hold the headgears in place. The topknot was a sign of manhood for the men since they would start to wear their hair into a topknot when they got married, as they used to marry at a young age ;

It just like Daeng'gi Meori, one of the most classic hairdos for woman, easily seen all the way into 1960s. With daeng'gi meori, long hair is braided into a single long braid, and accented with a bright coloured- ribbon (called daeng'gi) at the end. Only unmarried women wore daeng'gi meori

TL;DR so basically when your hair up : you are married/engaged
if the hair was parted at the front and braided into long pigtails at the back : you are not married yet,

for drama,
some character probably historically married/engaged but doesn't depict as such,
this also bugs me because, in drama, the people that used sangtu is not married when it supposed to be the sign if adulthood and the sign of adulthood include the arranged marriage/engagement (even when they didn't consummate it)
I think they don't want to make the viewer feel iffy about that,
and for a student, they at least have the scholar uniform that doesn't define their marriage identity

ps: you can correct me, I also really want to know if sangtu can be worn off marriage or it just about the pin/donggot?

Interesting topic!
I always wonder do korean have any period where the actor have to shave their hair to play it?
It exist in china and japan, so since korea is in the middle do they also have it?
But then, I'm not sure kdrama actor will do that as they seem to have to maintain their look. Even bad hairstyle raise complaint, what's with hairless style.

as I know Korean doesn't have the half-bald (Qing dynasty) hair style or the samurai hairstyle (chonmage),
so they wouldn't have to shave their head to play saeguk, they only need a wig or growing their facial hair

they just have to pick between gat/tidy up with hat or no-gat/longer hair

You can tell Sungjae is working hard filming Goblin despite having to deal with recording new songs for comeback and learning choreography, filming MV. He did the same when he filmed Village of Achiara and had BTOB Way back home comeback at the same time. He was exhausted (I wasn't a fan back then but that's what I heard).

....I wish.... Eunji and Seo In Guk were so sweet. Wished they could do the same for this comeback that they did for WOW for BTOB.

Diana, I think those suits are more burgundy velvet suits than red velvet. It honestly looks soooo good on screen.

Those fancams Diana and Colleen posted are so funny. :3 Sungjae seems like a lost sheep. :3 What I like the most is the 4K resolution so we get to see their expressions.

I'm lurving this comeback. I'm religious, so I love that they openly talk about praying and God in the lyrics for I'll be your man (Pray). I can connect with it so much, and the MV is so sad but beautifully shot. :) :) :) The choreography too incorporates prayer. That means so much to me. :D

Karen Sungjae's side profile in that clip is to die for, but I love the transition between Hyunsik (blond) beautiful side profile and his most.

ColleenBTOB fans are a quiet bunch unless someone strikes their inner fangirl. :D That's why you don't see them until someone mentions BTOB. ;)

Dropped so many dramas this year (sorry JCW) and the only thing I am watching now after Moonlight are Good Wife and Jealousy Incarnate.

I don't remember Yoon Kye Sang being this charming in Greatest Love and I feel the need to watch his dramas after this.

Full Sun vs Last - which one is better guys?

And regarding JI - oh Jo Jung Suk, I almost forgot how amazing he is. Those expressive lovesick eyes and body gag! And I feel JJS and GHJ adlibs a lot? I adore their dynamics when they are together on screen and I like it that the PD let them do whatever they want to do.

Though I have to say the directing and editing bothers me a bit with the yellow filter, voice overs, numerous flashbacks, the animation (only first episode, thank God!), it feels a bit like watching old school drama. But this drama is so full of hearts, swoony eyes and laugh out loud moments so I am in it till the end. This has got to be one of the best rom-coms I have watched in awhile. I mean, OHY was good and all but it leans towards melo really (wait I just got an idea, next rom com otp should be JJS + Seo Hyun Jin!)

All of the lovable side characters from JI remind me of High School King of Savvy (which was the best comedy in my book) because I remembered how I adore Seo In Guk's grandpa / dad / friends / stuttering manager and how much laugh I got from their wacky antics.

Hi Beanies!

Usually I'd say Happy Friday, but here in the states it's a little hard to say happy anything right now after our election. Thank goodness for kdramas!!!

Last week I read so many comments about When a Snail Falls in Love that I decided to try it and was transfixed immediately! The production value alone is incredible!!! So I marathoned all of them and now I wait for the next 3 (oh so short) episodes to come out.

However I was so impressed as it was my first Chinese Drama and so wanted to see what else was out there. So I started Love me if you Dare which again is really addicting and heart-pounding!!!
Love Me if You Dare is what got me through Tuesday (ignoring the election) and Wednesday (facing the aftermath) and I can't recommend it highly enough!

The other wonderful show that is just fun to watch and completely distracting is 1% of Anything! The smile on the lead's face when he looks at the woman he loves makes me swoon every time. (Sorry, I can't keep all the names straight in the dramas.)

On the weekend my latest addiction is Laurel Street Tailors - it takes a few episodes (well actually a LOT) but now that the main love line has started it's really really cute!

Thank goodness for Kdramas - that have helped me through some serious depression lately.
But on the good side I now have a brand new granddaughter - and she is, of course beautiful but lives several states away and so I won't get to hold her for awhile. Here's hoping when she gets older I'll get to instruct her in the world of kdramas as her father was born in Korea. She has his eyes!!

Thanks to all the people who comment here - I love reading all your insights and laughing along with your humor. You really make my day!

I also want to clarify that I did not vote for either major party candidate, so I'm not pushing any political viewpoint/agenda here.

What I would like to say is that it's too simple to say that America showed its true colors this week, or that this election has illustrated how deep our racial hatred truly lies. To assume that only one group of people voted republican and that a more inclusive group voted democrat is to ignore the diverse community of Trump supporters (which includes Latinos, African Americans, and even members of the LGBT community). To think that you are speaking for all minorities by expressing fear and disappointment on their behalf following this election is to be presumptuous and close-minded. To call all Trump supporters racist white supremacists is similarly presumptuous and wrong.

I don't know if there is a solution to the concerns of Americans today because the ones who truly rule the world do not make decisions for our benefit. They act only in their own interests. To thrive, they must constantly create divisions. In the end, we the people get hurt (no matter who we are or where we come from).

There. I've said my piece. Everyone, please take care. Please be well and may you all be blessed!

Same (on the voting)! I didn't vote for either major candidate, mostly because I just couldn't get behind either of them. But I don't want to hate on those voted for another candidate, I have friends and family who voted all across the spectrum. Please do be well! Know that I love you all!

Yes, Paris and Europe should be ashamed that it looks like this – human beings should not be treated as if they were worthless and lesser than others.

Fortunately, many ordinary citizens of Europe take things into their own hands and are not sitting by, volunteering and reaching out to lesser fortunate ones. We've got plenty to share here. :-)

wops, get cut (I hate touchscreen).

If he is true to his word, to the extreme of closing the door, in some point it may be good for everyone. He want american to be able to stand in their own foot again right?
But for the consequences, close the door means nothing enter and nothing out. US need to stop putting their nose in other countries bussiness. I'm sure it will be good to most countries not to depend to much on US.
Worst thing that can happen is if he launch nuclear missil and start WWIII. With global contamination everyone will suffer, so it fair enough. Anyway, global warming is just conspiracy theory right (in sarcastic note).

I guess I will address it to american beanies here.
First, I'm asian. So when I watch presidential debate, I'm curious. When Trump talk about imigran and "taking back" america to american, has anybody ever realise or know that the original owner of america is indian tribe (cherokee or inuit or something, sorry for wrong spelling). I mean pre Columbus expedition. So by definition, even white people are immigrant right?

Okay, since I mentioned that I'm asian, it may create some prejudice. I have to add that I live in my homeland (and for 9 generations before me, we live in this city) and never think of living in overseas or even change my citizenship. But I'm lucky that my job allow me to travel to a lot of place without the need to settle there.

By definition migration means movement, so it happen since humanity exist. Most start from trading, some return to their homeland other choose to stay in the new land. So, talking about immigration (not refugee), for me is either nobody fault or everybody fault.
My country has history when we were being slave in our own homeland under colonisation of european. That time, they brought some local people to europe as a maid or labour. Those "immigrant" work harder and they have better life and choose to stay. From what I read and what I see during my travel, it's similiar with america-europe-africa.
Economy play its part too where they always look for the cheapest. So whose fault if most industries move to 3rd countries or employ people who willing to be paid cheaper.
In other case, it was easier (and cheap) to just pay those immigrant to do the job. But they run out money so they need to work. As they're so used to let other to do the job, they can't do anything and so in the "battle for job", they lose.
There's also the "runner", who choose to run from all troubles in their home in the name of get a better life. But they end up becoming "problems" in the new place. Or in other scenario, they succeed but when they want to return to their home, they find out that someone else already fix it and invade it.
These problems are not only between countries but also within country (with various tribes or races, ie india's punjab-tamil). Urbanitation bring problem too (I still don't understand why people don't want to return to village where they'll have better chance than to stay in city).

My point is, don't blindly put immigrant as somekind of villian. Yes, they have their fault, but everyone has their part in creating this problem.

I agree that most people who voted for Trump are not necessarily like Trump. Many of my good friends and members of my church voted for him. I did not vote for him, but I wasn't that disturbed when he was elected.

However, I have been greatly disturbed since then, because it seems that his win has emboldened the few people who embrace Trump's darker side -- the side of being racist and abusive to women. Those who had these tendencies but were holding back because they knew it wasn't socially acceptable are no longer holding back. I'm praying that this is a short-lived phenomenon, or things could get very ugly very quickly here...

I would love to live in a privileged ideal world where I don't have to worry that my friends voted Trump. But I live in a world where Trump means that millions of patients that got health insurance when they previously didn't qualify or couldn't afford it may lose their insurance. Why, because Trump is already making plans to repeal ACA. We live in a reality where those politician's best interests were bad enough before but any positives we've reaped in previous years could be repealed and dismantled leaving us in a worse state than ever before. I live in a reality where just the next morning after Trump's win, my friends and family were posting about being heckled by random people that they should be ready to leave this country, where the KKK was already planning a victory rally in NC.
So my take isn't whether or not Trump is a bad person (He is...I'm surprised at the number of people ignoring the hateful comments he's made in our very recent history against a variety of PoC and minority groups as well as women) but that his presence and rhetoric has managed to inspire and embolden a group of people with enough hate and disregard for fellow humans to actually inflict hatred and violence upon others without fear of retribution.
I've never felt actual fear at being a woman and PoC before but now I'm honestly thinking twice about my level of optimism and faith in people. Love my neighbor? I did that before I realized a person could talk about mass deportations and vilify already marginalized groups and still win the highest office of the land. This while I'm told to love my neighbor? What happens when my neighbor wants to kick me out of the country I was born in or worse inflict violence on my friends and family. Yeah, no thanks for the kumbaya talk.
I'm aware that minorities did vote Trump but that doesn't mean my personal feeling of fear and discomfort or those of millions of others are invalidated. Nor does it mean that a racial divide doesn't exist in our country. That doesn't imply that I assume every white person I meet is racist but it doesn't take away from the fact that a very visible political divide in this country today exists and that it has become overwhelmingly about race, culture, and ideological identity.
So no, I'm not hating on anyone but I'm not going to think it's A-okay and the world is just going to be fine. But if I were to hate them, I personally feel like in the current climate it's absolutely justified and I don't think it's presumptuous at all.

Still, I don't want to continue talking politics when we're in kdrama land so I hope you otherwise had a great week and enjoyed a large number of dramas. I know I'm sad/happy about Jealousy Incarnate ending, thoroughly enjoying 1% of Anything, and looking forward to our Mermaid drama and our weighlifting drama lol. :)

I second your comment and I also don't understand why all of a sudden his racism is brushed aside. His win has emboldened a lot of people to be more outwardly racist than they already are. Us PoC have to stick together and hopefully persevere this trying time us our lives will be in more danger. I dont understand why all of a sudden, people want to burry their head in the sand and sing Kumbaya and everything will be alright. It's not and they are in for a wakeup call. The 2.3% growth in the economy in September, under 5% unemployment and 200,000 jobs created will be a thing of the past if Trump goes along with repealing Obamacare, destroying the Department of Education and the EPA, privatizing Social Security and going after Medicaid and Medicare and increasing taxes for Middle class and poor while reducing taxes for the rich. The sad thing is that the Minorities will experience all of this with the additional helping of racism and insecurity on top. Life will seriously suck. The only small comfort is I didn't vote for him and I will have a clear conscious.

I agree that the world is far from being okay. As someone who follows alternative news, I know that there is much to be concerned about. More and more freedoms are being taken away from all of us, and the fires of racial tensions are continually being stoked. I also don't live in a privileged, concern-free world. .

I respect your opinion so I will not say anything more on this.

I finally got around to watching Go Ho's Starry Night this week, and am I ever glad I did. What a wonderful little drama. Kim Young-kwang was fantastic. Actually, I enjoyed most of the performances. Two things that really struck me in this drama were the use of the wrist grab/forced hugs and the treatment of noble idiocy. Finally, a drama that portrayed noble idiocy realistically and used the wrist grab/forced hugs to good effect!

Ji Hoon played the noble idiot card to protect Ho from his financial troubles, he said. In reality, what he did was to not trust Ho or give her any chance to make a decision about their relationship. Thus when he came back, she was very realistically hurt and had moved on. Although, she was a little confused about the moved on momentarily, which I also found realistic. After all, she had loved him. He was constantly grabbing her by the wrist od pulling her into forced hugs. These served to demonstrate his desperation but also showed how he was entirely focused on his feelings and not hers.

That was so nicely contrasted with Tae Ho's patience and gentleness, despite his terrible temper. While he made his feelings to Ho very clear, after gathering up his courage, he never forced them on her. He constantly showed support. His touches were gentle, cupping of her face, wiping tears, and so forth. His hugs and kisses, while not hesitant, we're given with space to allow Ho to accept or pull away. The only wrist grabbing was mutual during a heated discussion, more to keep the other person from walking off than to forcefully pull them somewhere. I have done the same thing with my husband. So to me that was very natural.

Anyway, I know the forced hugs, kisses, and wrist grabs are often a heated topic around here, it seems. I found them to be particularly well portrayed and used to great affect in this drama. Does anyone else agree, or can anyone else think of other dramas where they were well used?

Hi @BossyPixie
Go Ho's Starry Night - I really liked this web drama. Just enough angst and confusion and balanced out with slow dawning realisation and development of emotional attachment. :) Yeah, this was another winning OTP and romance and best of all, it was short.

On wrist grabs, the show that comes to mind to me is the currently airing 1% of Anything where the girl gets to grab and pull the guy along. One time he wasn't willing and the other time he did not protest at all, since they were looking for a place. I believe she even held on to just his thumb for a bit. How's that for being different? :D

Back to Go Ho's Starry Night, here's a great review on it.

@Growingbeautifully,

Thanks for the link to the nice review. I think that I would give the drama a higher grade, but to each her own.

I am also enjoying 1% of Anything. Actually, the thumb dragging scene is one of my favorites! It was just so cute, sweet, and indicative of their growing relationship. I don't really have a problem with the wrist grabbing in this drama either. First, Da-hyun gives as good as she gets. Second, it also serves a purpose in showing Jae-in's poor people skills and slow growth into understanding how to better interact with people.

There are many other dramas where the only purpose of wrist grabbing seems to be for the male to drag a reluctant female somewhere. There doesn't seem to be any connection to character or story. It's the same case with forced kisses and hugs. I really appreciated how Ho clocked her hoobae after his drunken forced kiss.

Thoughts on JI:
I'll start by saying that I really enjoyed this show, mostly (if not totally) because of JJS. Throughout the series, a few things bothered me that I never quite understood.

1) Why was having breast cancer considered a social taboo? Why could it cost someone their job? I understand why a man might be embarrassed to have breast cancer, but I felt like there was too much emphasis on a social stigma that I didn't think existed. For instance, after everyone found out it was HS who had breast cancer, they avoided him like the plague. Same when they thought Na Ri had cancer.

2) Why was Na Ri so harshly criticized for mistakes that were clearly the production team's fault? Overall, I found the resolution to her career path so disappointing (but I'll avoid discussing it fully for those who haven't seen the finale)

3) I really wish Na Ri's relationship with her brother had been more carefully developed throughout the series. I felt like most of the time, she was living as a single woman, who didn't really know what was going on in her brother's life. Similarly, HS became her neighbor to develop a relationship with his niece but then he never tried....

When HS announced he had breast cancer, probably they avoided him because they were gossiping about him and his cancer, so they have to maintain the proximity in order to not getting heard by HS, LOL.

But, I understand why having cancer in that business might cause you losing job. Considering the company probably gave medical benefit / insurance to the permanent employees, it's a given they preferred healthy employees for the sake of efficiency. it would be considered a lost for the company if you took sick leave or if your sickness cause work accident, since they'd have to do damage control and it's considered less efficient and effective.

Heck, in the real world, at least in where I am living, we try to hide our previous or ongoing sickness to keep our job safe. It is unfair to sack ppl because of their sickness. But it happens!

In case of HS, he was lucky to escape the risk of losing his job because of his cancer. Because, the broadcast was getting a lot of love from the viewers. It raised the ratings and made ppl watch the news for him. Therefore, the company decided to milk this for their profit instead of firing him.

There has been some fun election satire on the Borowitz Report, like the one from Oct 29 with a picture of Queen Elizabeth, titled:
"Queen Offers to Restore British Rule Over United States"

And starting with:
“This two-hundred-and-forty-year experiment in self-rule began with the best of intentions, but I think we can all agree that it didn’t end well,” she said.

Quick question. My friends and I were discussing about Moon Lovers and Moonlight Drawn By Clouds. Obviously we started talking about the titles since there is the word 'Moon' in them. Like with Moon Embraces in The Sun as well. It makes us wonder why there's a Moon in the title and what it truly represents.

The meaning of the title Moonlight Drawn By Clouds is actually explained in the series. Plus the moon is repeatedly shown throughout the show, not just to boost its already gorgeous cinematography, but also with significance in parts of the narrative. The side effect of it, as the production crew had wished, is that whenever fans see the moon, they will be reminded of the show. It totally worked!
