Happy OT everyone, TGIF!!!

I was watching an episode of Laurel Tree Tailors and saw Lee Dong Gook's five kids from Superman Returns in a Cha In Pyo, La Miran hospital scene. Their cameo was just a few seconds but I still found it funny.

So beanies, what are your fav drama cameos?

Recent fave is Kim Ji Seok who did a hilarious cameo in Drinking Solo. Both his character in Another Oh Hae Young and Premium Trash in DS have the same name - Jin Sang.

Although he's never been much of a lead, I've always enjoyed Kim Ji Seok.

Lee Seung-Gi as himself in "The Greatest Love." I'm not a fan but I like him with Cha Seung-Won in their CF days lol.

Park Hae-Il in "Age Ending in Nine Boy." I didn't watch the drama, just Park's cameo. He's one of my fav film actors who has never been in a drama before so that's all I'll get from him in dramaland.

Looking forward to director Park Chan-wook,Ha Jung-woo, Kim Tae-ri in "Entourage."

'Still would recommend "Emperor of the Sea." This show looks impressive on my big screen. True Epic. Has it all. Finshed with 50% National rating when it came out and made Sue-Ae a major star. Dramafever has updated a widescreen version on their website.

0

Thank you and yes I watched it already and maybe 80% of all the sageuks from late 1990s to now. The ones that are available online lol.
I love Chae Shi-ra too and I think that was Song Il-Kook's break out role.

Director Kang Byung-taek was the executive producer for Moonlight. One of the reason why I watch that drama beside Kim Yoo-jung.

0

I think it didn't help at all that the script didn't flesh out the non-main lead characters. I read somewhere that Wang Won's actor had to adlib his lines like 80% of the time, including Kang Han-na has to work out the motivations of her character simply because there weren't clear directions.

Yikes! The production is screwed even before it started filming, me thinks.

Required fields are marked *

I stayed for Kang Han-na. I was counting on her to make Queen Daemok work even if the writing is a mess.

I wouldn't be surprise if she had a few words with the writer about her character. She was the one character that remained consistent throughout the whole show.

She did a sageuk before as Jang Hyuk's leading lady on the big screen. I'd love to see them together again in another sageuk.

0

@Kiara, me too. I would have bailed the show for a long time if it weren't for Kang Ha-neul and Kang Han-na. Ha! The two Kangs.

It's funny that even Lee Jun-ki admitted that character-wise, he's more attracted to Kang Han-na's character, Yeon-hwa. Because she's a strong character, his words.

Yes! I want to see her more in sageuk, preferably a better production. Heck, I hope the same team behind 6FD, will consider her in their next project.

0

Kim Kyu-tae can't multi task like Kim Young-hyun. Young-hyun was the head-writer for SFD, QSD etc and she was also the executive producer. She knows how to cast competent actors for her sageuks. That's where the money goes and look at the result from all her sageuks.

I do feel bad for IU though. This should have been her show and I can't imagine how frustrating it was for her since this was her first sageuk. She needed good direction and a script that she can work with. Lee Jun-ki can compensate, they should've focus on her.
If Ham Eun-jung shines in Queen In-soo I'm sure IU would've in Scarlet Heart with a better director and writer.

0

Yes, I feel bad for IU too. Seeing her in The Producers, really opened my eyes to her acting. She would have benefit a lot from experienced show-runners. She did shine in some episodes, notably the scenes she had with Lady Oh.

What's clear that I'm probably going to stay clear from Kim Kyu-tae's sageuk works unless he improved by a large margin.

0

@Gehrel

Kim Kyu-tae was lucky enough to work with great writers like No Hee-kyung. Kim Cheol-kyu whom she worked with in More Beautiful than a Flower is a much better director.

Leave it to sageuks to separate the good from the bad. Some people just need to stay the heck away from sageuks.

DB already wrote a news about it on news bites section, go check it out, chingu!

Wow, what a week! A lot of happen in real life this week, I'm relieved that it's finally week end.

So, in his final week Moon Lover finally reach double digit in rating, which I guess partially because a lot of people curious on how this series will end. It means that we have one more drama to be added in fail korean remake list. Overall I got dr ja vu feeling on this drama with Naeil Cantabile. Why?
1. Both are korean remake of popular drama series which are adapted from book (or to be exact novel for BBJX and manga for NC). But for rating reason, some "adjustment" need to be done.
2. The original series have huge fan base but k-remake fail to become a hit.
3. Both are quite popular in DB, if the indicator is number of comment in each episode recap. But it's obviously polarized and can be fierce most of the time.
4. The originals are a female centric drama (which bring the actress to stardoom). The k-remake has rather "young" actress, but as like typical k-drama where female character undergone a lobotomy, in the end the actress receive the biggest bashing from viewer.
5. A lot of important supporting characters who have their own story to fill and not only act as plot device.
6. The last straw for viewer of both drama are their main male lead (JW for NC and LJK in ML).
7. The Last Episode!

It's not that korean can't make a good remake, but how can it be called remake when it so different and it fail to capture the original's soul? May be they need to choose a story that will suit to korean's style and taste as I can see that they tried but then had to do some changes to satisfy their local viewer (=rating). Or stop to call it remake and just say inspire from or loosely based on.
Which make me wonder, what happen to My Sassy Girl remake? Since it is a remake of korean movie, on paper it should suit korean's taste right? Or will it end up like My Girlfriend is an Agent and Level 7 Civil Servant (which amusingly star JW as well)?

"The k-remake has rather “young” actress, but as like typical k-drama where female character undergone a lobotomy, in the end the actress receive the biggest bashing from viewer."

Lol the fate of so many reasonably talented actresses!! Always wondered why K-fandoms are actress bashing - so maybe it is female character bashing. I hope.

Not seen ML or BBJX except trailers and snippets but my friends who loved the C-version to bits left K-version in a few eps. Nodame as a character just doesn't fit K-dramas so no wonder the changes didn't help.

Well in this case, I really didn't like IU maybe because of Youtube piece with Seo Hyun-jin or Kim Hyun-joo I thought really resembled heroine in C-version. I think Moon Lovers was made for international(Chinese) audience as main target and did casting that way. Just disappointed.

I actually feel bad for her. Seo Hyun-jin and Kim Hyun-joo have had their fare share of good sageuks under their belt. They've worked with good writers and directors before especially Kim Hyun-joo in Cruel Palace. SangDo was awesome too.

I do agree with you about the casting though. They weren't taking the Korean audience into consideration, they were out to please the Chinese viewers.

I love Nae-il's Cantabile and this is coming from someone who loves the original (anime, drama, movies/specials).

Though Nae-il and Nodame are different in some ways, I believe Nae-il was able to capture Nodame's essence. It tried so hard to be like Nodame that you could see the story struggling, but once it decided to become a drama of its own, it managed to become special in its own way. (But damn that pre-produced ending)

@elric
Yes, I can see that they clearly tried to follow the original, both drama. But as I mentioned before, to suit the rating they did some adjustment and with that they lose the heart of the original.

As you said, "once it decided to become a drama of its own, it managed to become special in its own way". Yes, they are.
Once I ignore that these two are remake and think it as kdrama with similar premise with some dramas I've seen before, they actually are decent kdramas. That's why may be they should have dropped "remake" from the title.

I think I must be really getting old, to my great disbelief, I discovered that I could not even sustain my passion for swooning over LJK in MLSHR. Maybe only those who are young at heart could have that kind of youthful passion to obsess unconditionally over someone so remote from your day-to-day life as an actor or pop idol. Though I could still finish watching MLSHR for LJK due to my insistence on being dogged loyal, I just couldn’t make myself go gaga over Wang So. I find this character not easily relatable and likable, particularly in the last few eps, he irked me so much that though I applauded Jun-ki’s superb acting, I couldn’t bring myself to like him. Even normally well mannered beanies were resorting to cursing and swearing in the recap to relieve the frustrations caused by the numerous flaws of the drama and the maddening ending. I said many times before, sageuk is never my cup of tea, this whole watching experience had stretched me to the limit of tolerance, it left me so exhausted that I heaved a great sigh of relief that it is finally over.

Instead I find myself more invested in OTWTTA even though the leads are strictly speaking, not considered my favourites. It is the overall appeal of the cinematography, bgm and the layered characters which got me engrossed. This is related to age too, probably I’ve come to accept and empathise with people who can unwittingly get themselves into tricky situations due to life’s imperfections and unforeseen events. Humans are not made of iron or steel, emotions does make things grey, instead of absolute black or white, right or wrong. I like it that characters are not one-dimensional, even bitchy and feisty female characters got to redeem themselves with some saving grace, the only character left is a touchy narcissistic jerk of a husband. It will probably be better for him to feign ignorance for the time being until SA braced herself up for the inevitable all hell break loose confrontation. Thanks to the recommendation from @Sancheezy, I started watching jdorama Umei ni, nita koi, it has quite a similar vibe as OTWTTA, with a strong focus on the hand of destiny in bringing the seemingly incompatible couple together.

As for JI, though I find LJS swoon worthy, I couldn’t bring myself to like him too, the seemingly endless meandering around the same plot points is wearing me down. If what was depicted in the drama is true about the social stigma attached to men with breast cancer, men who couldn’t conceive and discrimination against cancer patients at the workplace, then SK seems quite a harsh society. More than being fearful of given the death sentence of a cancer relapse, when HS was greeted by the news that he could not conceive, he went into a state of hysteria, looked upwards and lamented to god this ill-fate more than Job did in the Old Testament, though the sufferings were so lame when compared to what Job went through in the bible. His cancer brought him and Na-ri together, it was a blessing in disguise since his cancer was cured but he went into despair, made unilateral decisions and shot himself in his own foot. Strictly speaking, he is not a jerk, but more of a noble idiot probably, at least he got to redeem himself in ep 22, what more could we ask for?

I started to feel quite sick of jerks and narcissistic man due to an over proliferation of them in recent kdramas, be it 1st and 2nd leads (Drinking Solo, MLSHR, JI, WiaS, OTTWTA). So I’m not sure if I should watch 1% of Everything as obviously, after DS, Ha Seok-jin appeared as an annoying ultra jerk again. To cure my repulse of jerks and jerk-like characters, I’ve resorted to watching jdorama, Nigeru wa Haji da ga Yaku ni Tatsu, at least a polite but nerdy IT geek is better than a savvy smart-ass jerk. This drama is light and fluffy but not cheesy, it makes for good watching.

So much for my ranting about jerks, I will go hide in the corner to nurse my poor broken spirit and constipated mind caused by shoving 20 eps of MLSHR down my throat which resulted in all that mind congestion, frustrations and fatigue.

Here’s a soothing song After the Rain, oh no, it reminded me of MLSHR again, everything went downhill after that “batman” rain scene, sigh...

So SIG turned out to be an ultra sweet character even after regaining his memory? When he was being the fervently "shopping king" in ep1, it felt like he was quite spoilt by the entourage of attendants around him. I only watched first 2 ep but dropped it as it felt so similar to CA4K.

I'm not sure about his memory, I haven't watched this week eps yet, but I thought he was always sweet. The first ep was not as good as the rest, I'd say give a chance to watch him and Bok-shil together but if you already did that in ep 2 and maybe thought his requests and troubles understanding the real world were not endearing than probably SKL won't be as funny.

Btw, I like OTWTA a lot too, but I wish the secondary characters had been better written.

0

No no! CA4K is a thrash compared to Shopping king Louie. I suggest you watch this show because it's not brainless fluff. The story is simple and doesn't drain your energy with the tropes. Light-hearted with little mysteries.

0

@Lixie, but imo, HW and MJ were quite well written, they are not the typical bitchy villain in kdrama, I thought both gracefully redeemed themelves in this week's OTWTTA eps?

0

im sorry, but what is ca4k?

0

@unuafida, CA4K = Cinderella And Four Knights

0

@Pebble
if you want to stay away from a jerk and narcissistic man character, I would suggest you better to check jdorama. Among East Asian drama, jdorama has less as***** male character (modern setting drama, I'm not talking about saeguk vs taiga vs wuxia)

Agree quite a bit. The biggest problem with the Japanese dramas is often finding them with subs, and subs seem to be slower. And because so few seem to get picked up by the main sites such as Viki or DramaFever, often the only source are the pirate sites.

Well said!
These last two years I never watch live airing jdorama anymore, always wait till it's fully subbed. It's not about waiting for sub, but I'm affraid if they drop it in the middle. I'm a manga reader, so I'm used to wait a month for a new (short) chapter, even I can go to raw version. But when you're invested to a drama and suddenly they decide to stop sub it, boy that's disaster. Reading raw manga is easier than watching raw drama.

0

Hey pebble! Regarding you trying to cure yourself of jerks as male leads-
I'm on a Jdrama binge now and one of the shows Love That Makes You Cry (Itsuka Kono Koi wo Omoidashite Kitto Naite Shimau) has male leads that aren't jerks- in fact the main lead and second lead are super endearing! Only watched till episode 4 but boy is it touching/heart wrenching and it lives up to its name for sure! (Just to warn you in case you want to watch).

Ugh, at the mention of that drama @Love That Makes You Cry, I just want to flip my table so hard! I don't know why I stayed til the end, but that was one frustrating drama, not much development on both leads and I had to wait til the end of the episode to see "something".

One of my favourite dramas ever. I want more dramas like that – sensitively written and actually true-to-life.

@maryxiah

Not sure why you found it frustrating? Maybe you don't like slice of life? There was actually plenty of developments in both leads, just that much of the drama is very subtle and quiet. If you want more-in-the-face, then, yeah, that's not the drama for you.

Umm, I was expecting a love that makes me cry? I binge watched this and finished in 2 days, judging from the title, I was half expecting an emotional ride watching this, but I didn't so I was disappointed. I guess I'm not a fan of slice of life drama.

0

I watched Love That Makes You Cry when it was airing, yeah agree, that is a very slice of life drama, simple and yet touching. The characters are ordinary people earnestly making a living, and the emotional connection between the leads Ren and Oto is so heart-breakingly pure and sincere. I love this drama too, and I'm glad that there is a good ending :)

YES, watch 1%! The male character is a jerk in the first ep, but he is tamed by the feisty female lead very soon. This drama is so NOT typical of the majority of Kdrams that you've seen, I promise. You can tell she's calling the shots here and the chemistry is phenomenal! This is a cable show so it doesn't shy away from the subject of sex. In other words, it's very realistic.

I disliked the original version and wasn't planning to watch this remake, but this has become my favorite show right now.

Same here. The original had issues, but this drew me in. Someone else (sorry to forget who) mentioned that he lost his childhood around the same age as the children the heroine teaches, and that she (being a kind person and great teacher) really clues into what he needs as a person. She truly helps him grow, and his jerkdom seems rooted in a real experience of being sort of stunted at an early age by traumatic events (his cousins death, his adoption by his aunt). It's a small story, but the writer does a good job of giving him enough layers that we can root for him to change. And he does.

Oh Pebble, I smiled in recognition of your feelings about all these jerk narcissistic males because I've been feeling the same way. It feels like they're all over the dramas I'm watching, too and (being in the US) it's ALL I hear about all day IRL as well.
MLSHR and JI endings feel to me like the US election, I just have to draaaggg myself along with these men until it's finally over.
I AM enjoying 1%, though - that jerk encounters a strong woman and it helps him.

The other day, my work mates just talked about the US election, we concluded that since women were granted voting rights after the African Americans, after Barack Obama, it is now time to have a woman president.

As for jerks in kdramas, it used to be quite entertaining in the earlier dramas like Full House, BOF, and those Lee Geun-Suk bad guy dramas like MSOAN, LR and PM, but somehow, it has become so suffocating in recent ones, probably made worst by patronising female leads that condone such jerk like behaviour.

Aloha, Pebble!

Thanks for "After the Rain." Very nice -- upbeat and soothing. Reminds me a bit of the Carpenters.

So much for my ranting about jerks, I will go hide in the corner to nurse my poor broken spirit and constipated mind caused by shoving 20 eps of MLSHR down my throat which resulted in all that mind congestion, frustrations and fatigue.

Late to the party, but wanted to commiserate with you. I haven't gotten back to my old Open Thread groove... and at times still feel kind of wrung out.

Happily, I just watched two Japanese films that are jerk-free.

A STORY OF YONOSUKE (2013) 160 min. -- long, but worth it. I just watched it early yesterday morning.

The kind-hearted title character is kind of a rube from the boondocks who goes to college in the big city, and crosses paths with a bunch of folks whose lives he influences in positive ways. Someone mentioned it in passing in the previous Open Thread... Yonosuke is just a nice guy.

Interestingly, the story dovetails with Japanese-Korean film 26 YEARS DIARY, which was based on a true story.

The other film is one I noticed on KissAsian: A TALE OF SAMURAI COOKING - A TRUE LOVE STORY (2013), BUSHI NO KONDATE aka WARRIOR'S MENU.

What a touching story! It is an understated romance that masquerades as a cooking show. The food looks scrumptious, especially at the Kaga Domain official banquets. I'd never heard of "kitchen samurai" before -- but apparently that's exactly how some of the samurai were employed during the final generations of Japanese feudalism. Kitchen Police with katanas! Suddenly John Belushi's "Samurai Bakery" doesn't sound so far-fetched...

All in all, a lovely film with gorgeous cinematography, tons of appetizing food, and lovely performances. It's very Japanese, and I love it! A good antidote to the tragic ending of MOONLOVERS.

Hope these help.

I've been on a Shin Dong-Wook binge, and rewatched SOUL MATE because the OST and use of music was so good. Then marathoned CLOUD STAIRS and STARS FALLING FROM THE SKY, both of which may have too much jerk behavior to tolerate in your present state. I have to say that the kiddies in the latter drama were terrific... and their noona was herself kind of a jerk, at least in the beginning.

Anyway, I think you'll enjoy the Japanese films. ;-)

Here's a hypnotic little something I came across on YouTube that soothes my spirit:

Jan Depreter and Andrew York play "Sanzen-in"
[composed by York after a visit to Sanzen-in temple in Japan]

I'm hooked to OTWTTA, too! And though I wasn't keen on the hand of fate mechanism in the beginning, I find myself invested in the multi-layered characters and how organic their reactions are to certain situations. I should check out that Jdrama soon! :)

Yeah, Umei ni, Nita Koi will help us get though the OTWTTA withdrawal after it ends next week/ From the way things are happening at such a fast pace, it looks like there'll be only 16 eps instead of the originally planned 20 eps, is that right?

I had forgotten it's 20 episodes long. Are they really reducing the number of episodes? You're right about the pace, though. I t seems 20 eps is too long, unless they flesh out the other characters' stories. Say, Mi-jin's and Je-ah's? Haha.

Oh no! Is it true they're cutting it to 16 eps? I'm not ready to say goodbye to OTWTTA. ?

I have no idea til now how this show is going to end but in my eyes they can do no wrong. I love it waay to much.

@Pebble - you're right, Wang So isn't really an easily likable or relatable character, but he's not presented like the usual kdrama male leads - he's actually something of an antihero, which is what kept me glued to my screen.

I remember wishing, after SWWTN, that Jun-ki would take a negative role or a role with negative aspects, just so we could see him tap into new things as an actor. Well, I got my wish. It's just a shame it had to be in a drama that made such a hash of it (and which COULD have been so good - god, how that rankles)

@pogo, maybe I'm just a mediocre type of viewer who is attracted to male leads with all the good qualities, the more the better. One with some kind of Oedipus complex, with a cruel streak and acting in a calculative headstrong manner just doesn't impress me, though I may understand what makes him tick and why he behaves in that way. Weird, I ended up pitying Wook more than So, just character wise, nothing to do with portrayal by KHN or LJK.

Well, at least through MLSHR, Jun-ki fulfilled his wish to portray a king, and secondly, like you said, take on a negative role. Anyway, I couldn't bring myself to watch the original BBJX as I don't find the 4th Prince/Emperor character attractive, and generally, I don't like such genre, it is "Jun-Ki Power" which drove me to watch MLSHR, so he still does have that hold over long time fans like me, though I no longer can openly swoon over him now like the way I used to.

Happy Friday Beanies!
How did everyone celebrate Halloween? ?The Boy was Totoro and I had a failed attempt at being Mei (don't ask!) ?

I realised while looking at all the promo stuff for the highly anticipated dramas coming up, namely Goblin and Legend of the Blue Sea (the latter even more hyped up than ever!) that I'm strangely not extremely excited by them. Am I weird?

I realise I tend to avoid shows with a lot of hype- I actually haven't watched My Love from the Stars (I know, I know I should- I read recaps. Does that count?) and this also extends to Hollywood- I haven't seen Titanic either, even though it came out when I was at the perfect age to fangirl over it. In fact I wasn't going to watch DOTS until I accidentally saw a clip of SJK while it was airing and well... let's just say he is my type ?Though Jeon Ji hyun is really fun in the teasers so I will likely be checking out LotBS.

So quick questions:
Which drama were you highly anticipating and still lived up to or exceeded your expectations?
(For me: MDBC! ❤️)

Which drama were you not expecting to be great but surprised you? (For me: Beautiful Mind)

Which drama was super hyped but fell flat when you actually watched it? (I don't have any... yet)

On the drama front I watched 2 Jdramas! Love That Makes You Cry (epi 4) and Cold Case (Epi 1) they are so different but I'm really enjoying both!!

Have a great Friday and weekend everyone!

Hi michykdrama! You have not watched titanic! It came out when I was very young. But I watched it once I was older and have rewatched It 5-6 times now.

1. I think its w, it was the first rama I started watching as it aired, even though the second half lost steam, I still liked it.

2. Bring it on ghost. Though It was typical kind of story. I really enjoyed watching it.

3. Sadly, the k2. I am still watching it but I steadily losing interest since episode 8.

Happy weekend! :)

Psh, not weird at all. It took me a while to get interested in either of those, and while I do have an eye on them now I don't know if I'll be along for the whole ride.

1. W: Two Worlds. For sure. I had such sky-high expectations for that drama and it didn't disappoint. I loved it to bits and pieces. ^^

2. Entertainer. I was looking forward to it moderately, but I didn't expect to love it so completely.

3. mmmm... honestly I don't recall. Does it have to be from this year? Because I've only ever heard good things about My Girlfriend is a Gumiho, and I couldn't ever get into it.

LOL about Titanic. I saw it twice in the theaters when it was first released because friends dragged me to it. I remember side-eyeing my friends in bewilderment as they sobbed at certain scenes. From then on, it was my friends' mission to get me to cry at a movie (they failed). Thankfully I've grown a little bit on that front of allowing feelings to escape on occasion, hee. Now, to answer your questions!

1) Coffee Prince, Healer (although I only JUST marathoned this one, and it was sooooo good!)

2) Secret Love Affair. Yoo Ah-in was magnetic in that drama. I so love him in this drama! I was saddened to find that db didn't recap that one. Seriously, I could not take my eyes off him while he graced my screen. Okay, stop gushing, stop, Rehab. Really. My Love From the Stars was another one I'd heard about but waited to see it. And I love it still! Come to think of it, where is Kim Soo-hyun now? In military service for his stint? Say it ain't so, please!

3) Cheese in the Trap is still a sore spot. I like all the characters still, but the way it was handled still gets to me. ? I begged my sister to watch this so we could squee in unison. She watched a few eps with me, then got caught up with other dramas. I kept going to the end. I told her to abandon that drama, to save herself from the irritation.

I expected it to be crap that SIG just took as a last attempt at a drama before his military service (sorry, Gukkie!) but it has turned out to be one of my most favorite dramas ever. I should have trusted SIG, but in my defense, the premise was about an amnesiac chaebol shopper.

Everyone in it is awesome, and the writing is great, and the music is just as good as JI. In fact, maybe it's the same music director? they have the same sense of humor in the music.

I'm super excited for Weightlifting Fairy. Youth and first loves, what's not to like? Also, Goblin. Lee dong wook AND Gong yoo? Cant. Wait.

1) the master's sun! Gong hyo jin's and so ji sub's chemistry was off the charts, both on and off screen. I will go down with this ship (till one of them gets married)

2) heart to heart. Putting aside the patient-doctor relationship and the makjang elements in the last 2 episodes, it left me with warm fuzzies.. Also, can you hear my heart! CYHMH was the first drama i watched which had a couple who believed and trusted each other. Not once did their love and trust for each other waver.

3) cinderella's stepsister. I was so hyped with the MGY and CJM pairing but alas, the drama frustrated me too much that I dropped it.

Hmm... can't think of one right now.

Which drama were you not expecting to be great but surprised you?
Moonlight Drawn by Clouds: Truth to be told, I wasn't anticipating anything from this show, I only picked it up for a casual watch and man, it surprised me on so many levels. I couldn't believe I get hooked so hard, still am. It's like watching your baby growing up step by step in the right direction, sure he stumbles along the way, but his progress and result are amazing!

Which drama was super hyped but fell flat when you actually watched it?
Moon Lovers: This was actually one of my most anticipated drama of the year, super hyped considering the ensemble casts. I stuck through 10 episodes waiting for something, anything to pull me in, but I couldn't connect with anyone of them, not even Wook, who was my most favorite character. Thank God I stopped halfway because I don't think I'd be able to recover from the time and emotional investment spent on this. My mother and sister who watched this faithfully got pissed at the ending. :(

I very rarely watch my drama live: i catch and binge watch after reading reviews. So i have certainly expectations but not really excitation and even less often disappointment, since i pick them carefully.

1) Which drama were you highly anticipating and still lived up to or exceeded your expectations?

Signal and Misaeng.
I never imagined that i would enjoy them so much to the point where i feel they take over my life, especially Signal which became my favourite show, all languages included.

2) Which drama were you not expecting to be great but surprised you?

Liar Game.
I gave it try because i was in the mood to watch a thriller, and expected it to be at best a guilty pleasure, but was blown away by the tight writing.
Same for Age of Youth.

3) Which drama was super hyped but fell flat when you actually watched it?

A lot of the classics romantic comedy. But Boys over Flowers and my lovely Kim Sam Soon (i hated the male actor and couldn't see the chemistry) come first to my mind.

1. Signal - waited for it for months after the cast was finalized and I was blown away. That's the greatest drama I've ever come across.
Master's Sun - I am a big horror fan and that is the first kdrama that has horror genre that I anticipated and I can never forget the great pairing of So Ji Sub ad Gong Hyo Jin there. That was the first time I ever shipped an OTP and although my ship sank, I was happy for the great drama ride.

2. Misaeng

I don't think this one has happened for me yet. Most of the time I go into shows with few expectations and am pleasantly surprised!

Which drama were you not expecting to be great but surprised you?
This one is EASY! 100% "Pinocchio"! I just kinda started watching it because one of the few Korean actresses I knew well (at the time) was Park Shin Hye. It is still to this day my absolute favorite Korean Drama. I love the themes, characters, subject, acting, plot, characters, the romance, friendship, family, EVERYTHING. I will never watch the news or pursue a dream in the same way again! What a challenge to live a life of integrity? I LOVE IT.
I think DramaBeans summed it up perfectly too in their main rating, "Park Shin-hye should only do rom-coms. And only with Lee Jong-seok." <3
Honorable Mention: "Let's Fight Ghost"

Which drama was super hyped but fell flat when you actually watched it?
Probably "Uncontrollably Fond". That show was the most disappointing to me. I love Kim Woo Bin, and he did a really incredible job acting wise... but I was so disappointed with how much of a lack of drive the story-line began to have about 7 episodes in. Suzy was great in "Gu Family Book", but Eul was a difficult character to portray in a favorable, reasonable light. Then the show just became a big angst fest with our main couple barely getting anytime to actually be in love... followed by a vague, in my opinion, purposeless ending after an emotional loss. I thought UF was going to be an incredible show, but ended up quite let down by the end.

Which drama were you highly anticipating and still lived up to or exceeded your expectations? - Shopping King Louis. I trusted Seo In Guk to pick a script that is more than it seems from the title, but I really really didnt expect it to be so intricate and with so much heart! I fell under the general opinion before it aired that it will be very lightweight, but it certainly isn´t. It is so much more.

Which drama were you not expecting to be great but surprised you? actually, Moonlight Drawn By Clouds. I really wasn´t sure with all the web novel adaptation and that weird dancing trailer... I was like, um, Bogummy, what have you gotten into? (I had the same feeling when the first PotC movie came out and I saw great actors like Geoffrey and Johnny under a mile of make-up drippiung down their face and some really kitchy ship... I was sure it was going to be an embarrassing disaster. HA Ha. ha.)

I usually like to watch a drama when it's done so i can see beanie comments and know if it's worth watching but w was worth breaking that for lol. The weeks of wondering how much more they can blow my head to smithereens was wonderful lol and the acting was solid.Lee Jong Suk is my person to look out for now in kdramas (it's sad female leads don't get much hype though after successful dramas)
2 HEALER!!!!!!!!!! - That was my first non rom com kdrama. I always made sure to watch only romcom kdramas but there was some hype for healer so i decided to give it a try and boy was i not blown away. Healer knocked Coffee Prince off the spot of my favourite drama of all times. My love for JCW began there and the female lead!i just loved her!

I finished ep 22 of JI last night bawling my eyes out. Which was good because I was ready to slug Hwa Shin at the end of ep 21. His reaction was understandable but so over the top and why oh why was he insisting on not telling Pyo Na Ri? arggghgh!

Granted, as a mom of two adopted boys, I know the pain of infertility and I understood the feeling of not being good enough as a woman/man. However, I also know there are so many other options to become parents. I kept wanting the writers to have someone tell him to get his shit together, grow some balls, be a man and look at other options.
Sorry ranting here.
Being able to conceive or not doesn't define your worth as a man or woman. Being strong, honest, loving, kind, brave among many other things - that's what define you as a person.

I was so frustrated after that episode and half way through ep 22 until the end when he decided to 'man up'. Then I was just crying my eyes out when he confessed. It was beautiful and I applaud the writers once again!!!

JI manages to surprise and amaze me with each episode. Well done writers!!!
And kudos to JJS/Hwa Shin for making me hate him, pity him and love him all in the space of an hour!!!!!!!

Okay rant over

I agree that there are other options and what you said about infertility doesn't determine a person's worth is beautiful. I wanted him to tell na ri so much too throughout ep 22. But then I realized Its easy to tell other people to do things. But, if I were in that position, will I be able to do it? So, I tried to look at it from his point of view.

Right now, I think hwa shin is in a state of shock especially since his proposal included kids. He is unable to accept it and it is not yet sunken for him. So, once he accepts it I think he ll be able to look at other options. Also, there is the possibility of na ri rejecting him because of this, hence his insisting on not telling her. But I am sure he wouldn't marry her without her knowing.

Also, I am wondering why they brought the infertility issue at all, the conflict because of the co workers knowing about his cancer itself would have been enough, right? I couldn't help crying at the end too. JJS is unbelievable as hwa shin!

I found the infertility issue not necessarily needed, too. There are cancer and workplace drama to be explored, HS and JW parents who don't know about NR and HS, yet, and so on.
I honestly want this drama to avoid angst and separation degree. I love how this show continued to raise serious issue in unique and lighthearted manner without making it too comical (at least for me. I notice not everybody feel the same way about this show).
But, it seems like the writer aimed for the dramatic by giving huge obstacle to be conquered by NR and HS ultimate love. Or maybe the writer want to explore how the macho HS is stripped down of his "masculinity" by giving him not only breast cancer, but infertility. I believe breast cancer and infertility doesn't make a man less man, and HS's action clarifying his breast cancer to the whole nation proved that the writer share the same opinion (IMHO).
Well, it get to show JJS's acting prowess and bring me to tears in the end of eps 22. So, I am good with this storyline (and emotionally wrecked, too).

My initial reaction on Wednesday was...that's it? Really? But you know I think it's perfect to bring it up. Especially because Eastern culture and Kdramas in general love to talk about how a 'namja' should do this and that. We love our wimpy male leads in the shadow of a strong female but it's always either or. We're either glorifying the K2 type of lead or cracking up at the kind that get their asses handed to them (I went back and watched K2H lol).
One of the biggest things HS feels he has is his masculinity. And while the breast cancer was a huge blow, I don't think it drove the point home that being sick or impotent doesn't mean you're less of a person or unattractive or unworthy of being considered an attractive male.
Also, at this point, I trust the writer isn't going to throw the noble idiot scenario so I'm happy to have a drama show us how I wish people would react were they to come across a bad situation. Instead of "running/breaking up for your own good" you take charge of your situation.

I actually found it amazingly realistic to see Hwa Shin's reaction to the reality of impotency throughout this week's episodes.
While I'm so so so happy he confessed to the world, I was really pleasantly surprised at how well this show presents the normal reaction for someone young and healthy finding out they have a terminal illness and then finding out they are impotent with the possibility of it being permanent.

In my experience, this isn't an uncommon reaction for people when they get bad news. Anger, hurt, outrage, bargaining, denial it's all part of the journey to processing and accepting bad news. What you're saying is the conclusion which is absolutely the truth but people have to process the negativity before they can arrive at that truth or else they're just suppressing and ignoring the bad stuff which will come back and blow up at the worst possible times.

In order for HS to tell NR about his impotency, he has to be in a secure place where he won't just blurt it out and run away leaving her to deal with it on her own. (Or be a noble idiot because that's also the worst) He had to go off to the deep end and contemplate his lot in life by the edge before he could come back down and voluntarily expose himself. I strongly relate to him in that sense and completely why he'd feel so angry and wronged.

It took me years to accept my own mental illness and then almost a year to gather the courage to talk about it more openly with friends and family. I still sometimes look at people who I know haven't dealt with mental illness personally and find a streak of envy and outrage at why I have to struggle with it on top of everything else. I'm in a field where being mentally healthy and strong is considered an absolute must and being less than that carries a huge stigma. So to talk about it even with colleagues is difficult.

I can imagine then conversely how difficult it would be if I were in an image conscious field and had to face not feeling like I'm at my best and not being able to talk about it because of the stigma.

I'm so bad when it comes to crying in shows. I cannot do that. I feel like I shouldn't cry on a show, pprobably make it a matter of my ego. But in the last scene I was like NR. I didn't exactly cry but i could tear up any time and I was nervous as hell for the first time in any show. I felt that the confession was so heartbreaking and tough to make.

Besides that I read that GHJ said after reading about HS that this is JJS. I agree totally. Nobody could've pulled that character better. Even though he chooses somewhat similar characters, they are layered into multiple other personas. So is HS. He is not your average rude jerk. He's got many other layers within that one jerk portrayal and each of them is visible differently.

After the whole mess that is Scarlet Heart Ryeo, I spend my Wednesday, Thursday and Friday looking, scouring the web for Lee Jun Ki’s drama.

Currently re-watching Arang because boy, was he good as Satoh in it. I’m in too deep.

I know I’ll get over him once I start a new drama; but I sure as hell will relapse once a new Lee Jun Ki drama’s out.

He’s my drug. And I am such an addict. I only watched the final episode of Scarlet Heart Ryeo once; for I fear I will cry again and again when I watch it. I am not willing to put myself through such pain again. Shame on you to hurt me once, show. Shame on me if I let you hurt me twice.

Despite its flaw; I love Scarlet Heart Ryeo. But if someone were to ask me to recommend it; hell no. I’d tell them to walk away. There is no need for you to put yourself under such utter pain.

I miss that time when I look forward to Mondays.

Now I’m back to hating Monday with all my heart’s content.

Had the drama been touted as a great love tragedy, the ending wouldn't have caused such an emotional whiplash. But we got lulled into safety when the director and LJK promised a happy ending. I don't know what kind of an ending it was but happy isn't what you'd call it....

I recommend Scarlet Heart to a friend i was trying to convert into a Kdrama addict, having touted it as the "Game of Thrones" of asian dramas...now i hope she forgets I mentioned it to her, because it just won't make sense to my very logical thinking friend, what with the colicky editing, and very disappointing end.

Pretend you have never ever suggested it.

Option B:
Pick another show that is actually good (-ish); and said you got the name wrong. How about "The Moon That Embraces The Sun". I mean, there's moon in the title... or Moonlight Drawns By the Cloud.

Save thy friend's soul from Scarlet Heart Ryeo. She deserves better~

I'm still slowly advancing on two fronts, JI and Age of Youth.

JI has been a big surprise so far, it is very different from what I expected in terms of what kind of comedy I was supposed to be dealing with. I'm not nearly as much surprised by how bored I am with the peripheral characters. What a waste of a perfectly good Lee Mi-suk ...

AoY ... well ... I need a little bit more space for this one ...

Age of Youth
After watching episode 2, I'm getting a bit nervous. This is a 12-episode mini-series, and they put a lot on the table here. Never mind the ghost and the "troubled pasts", these five women all have their separate lives and present stories, and the show is apparently trying to cover some of them (and not just the group aspect of them). In what time? But then again I realised that the show made some very reasonable decisions concerning compression.

The character lineup, for example, is a bit of a "archetype-best-of" display. We are all very familiar with them without much of an introduction, we can immediately tell them apart and we can start to focus on their stories and actual human aspects without all the handcrafted categorising that needs to be done with more nuanced character setups:

Eun-jae: Aesop's country mouse and shrinking-wall-violet-in-chief. She's the most bland character, as she serves/served as an audience anchor during the exposition.

Ye-eun is Strawberry Milk. Interestingly, she's the least stereotypical character, because usually you don't even bother to keep a character like her around: you'd like to show some struggle to suppress her true nature to embrace the social scripts of feminity, instead of starting with a character who already internalised all of them.

Ji-won is the counterdraft to Ye-eun: Ye-eun is 100% convention, Ji-won is 100% authenticity. And, K-drama being the harsh mistress she is, Ji-won gets punished for it like she should be.

A propos: Yi-na is the ultimate gold digger mistress, a "younger" version of "Yoona's Street"'s Mi-sun (and I seriously hope she gets a better arc. I loved Mi-sun's character, but that story arc was one of the low points in an overwise rather great show).

Jin-myung is your family-baggaged, hardened, proud, hardworking determinator super-student. We've met her character a lot (sometimes even K-drama characters who pretend to be this), most prominently maybe as the titular character in the KBS family drama 'My daughter, Seo-young' (and two episodes in, I can say with confidence that Han Ye-ri is wiping the floor with Lee Bo-young when it comes to the portrayal of that specific archetype.)

Just like with Ye-eun and Ji-won about authenticity, Yi-na and Jin-myung seem to be antithetical characters about the concept of pride.

Episode 2
The "ghost mystery" aspect, in my opinion, is another dangerous road to take, because once again, it needs time that the show doesn't really have. So far, the semi-"magical realism" approach holds, as long as they keep it on the "magical realism" side and don't digress into "supernatural mystery".

I could go on and nitpick a lot about all kinds of things by now, but lets focus on something more important: The beauty of the relationships on this show. It's not just "five women living together", or "five archetypes causing trouble". The show (mind you: by its second episode) already established personal bonds and contrasts between the characters as human beings.

And despite the frequent conjuring of mysteries about the past, the show stays in the present for most of the time, and we see (and hear) the characters living here and now.

Episode 3

After Eun-jae's first episode and Ye-eun's second, the third episode is built around Yi-na's PoV. I'm not particularly intrigued by her character considering there's barely any meat beneath the mere archetype here. However, she offers a great addition to the sets of relationships we can have between the characters, especially in combination with Ye-eun and Jin-myung (her two foils).

I'm wondering whether the show has any chance of achieving what it seems to be trying to do, considering that We The Audience are as (sometimes seasoned) K-drama viewers accustomed to simplex characterisation and the loud moral preachings.

Typically in K-drama (and many other genres with similar constraints on characterisation), you have a "problematic" main character -- the male lead jerk or female lead ice princess, for example -- and its always clear what they are doing wrong, and there are hints at their troubled past until the point where their dark secret is revealed, which instantly explains everything and at the same time bestowes enlightenment onto the now-formerly-troubled character. As soon as we meet a conventionally non-perfect main character in a K-drama, we expect him or her to have this kind of backstory to "explain away" the lack of perfection. Yi-na however, so far, is not just a walking scar to allow for multiple increasingly revealing and mind-blowing flash-backs in the second act; she's not a problem waiting to be solved. The question she epitomises is not "Wanna guess what backstory made me this way?", it's "Is this what I want?

The K-drama genre runs on a religiously tainted fairy-tale morality. Obstacles are overcome by virtue alone. That makes it so difficult to see the characters as actual human beings and listen to them trying to make decisions in their lives, because the solution is so very obvious: just become a more virtuous person and all these questions will disappear. Against this backdrop, I'm not sure whether the show actually managed to convince the audience that the existential discourse with characters like Yi-na, Jin-myung and Ye-eun does matter at the end of the day.

What do you mean about the surprise in JI type of comedy? I really like the 2 moms and the chef, but yes, these actors are wasted in this drama.

Don't worry about the pace in AOY, I felt they really slowed down halfway and could have explored even more a lot of the themes they tried to fit in the story. I can't tell much because I don't want to give spoilers.

JI
I didn't expect this kind of mercilessness towards its main characters. It's almost a madcap comedy. Very, very different from the Pasta or Miss Korea writing.

I hate the "two-mom" side-"issue" (I cannot call it a plot yet) because it's so awfully preachy and abusive and not nearly funny enough to compensate for it.

AoY
I'm not worried about the pace per se but about the huge menu the show already ordered by episode 2 (and 3). With only 9 episodes to go, that's going to take some driving skills to stay on track ...

I'm taking a break from JI at the moment (lack of time) but the 10-12 eps I watched, I also found the side characters pretty redundant. Not funny, boring and wasted actors...

Compared to Pasta and Miss Korea, the writing and story development of Jealousy Incarnate is much more sublime with layered texture unpeeling episode after episode. Watching it is a hugely satisfying experience as the seemingly mindless side or small plot from early episodes will turn out to be so meaningful later on. And all side characters have their chance to shine - and even little cutie Boem has a significant meaning in this drama.

I agree an observation elsewhere that we audience are so luck this year to have Signal on one hand and Jealousy Incarnate at the other side of the spectrum.

Please allow me to invite more DB friends to travel the JI journey. It's at times wacky, weird, and not following the usual tropes and go ways totally opposite what you'd expect - but you have to give it a leap of faith to the writer for the final payoff. I look forward to the final two episodes next weekend.

And JJS is simply phenomenal.

Hi Everyone! ...... I hope you are all doing well today.

Checking in periodically to OT and running around at home as I'm waiting for the plumber to arrive ...... plumbing issues! Not fun.

Quick question, are the pictures at the beginning of every post on this site and in all the recaps appearing for everyone?? ...... Suddenly, none appear for me! Just wondering what's going on.

Watched this week:

Moon Lovers - I may be dropping this. I'm still debating that though.

The Man Living In Our House - More fun than I thought it'd be!

Jealousy Incarnate - It was Pasta all over again!

On The Way To The Airport - Can't stop thinking about it all week. Every week.

Take care everyone!

What do you mean JI is like Pasta? Is it because of the references from episode 15? Because this show does that and more especially after episode 22. It has comedy, romance, angst, jealousy, some heavy-hitters, and a great message on breast cancer awareness for both men and women as well as the prejudice they experience in and out of work.

Yeah, I'm loving how this show intermixes entertainment with such an important and amazing message. Especially interesting because you've had the cancer trope used in dramas so much that you'd think that it wouldn't be so difficult for people to accept but reality is different from fantasy. I especially love how the doctor and nurse have been such an integral part of this story instead of being a nameless exposition fairy that just delivers bad news with poor bedside manner. Here you have a team of strong beautiful ladies that don't swoon over a man but rather support and cheer for him when he does well, scold him but also work with him to do better when he messes up, and then also get hilariously invested in his relationship with NR. It's great about humanizing the people behind the scenes as well as in front.

I must be more tolerant than I thought, because this whole show has been amusing to me, rather than frustrating as it apparently is for some.

The characters are not perfect people but they're not dramatically terrible and also still quite off-kilter in the real, conventional world that I know. But they're so human it's interesting to see a whole different perspective.

I understand them, and sometimes I even swoon with them, but I'm also tearing my hair out quite a bit because of their stupid-ness sometimes. Like, GRAAAAH, I love you show, but you're nuts, you dog poop.

Not to mention the fact that poor Hwa Shin must have felt as though his very manhood was being chipped away from him. First, breast cancer (STRIKE 1!), next infertility (STRIKE 2!).

He's lucky he's still got a full head of hair. Imagine if he found out he was also going bald (STRIKE 3 - OUT!).

Thanks to your super swoony performance in JI, now I just had to watch all your movies and dramas. From that thriller with indechiperable ending (the exclusive), the sweet romcom with Min-ah, that time-travel movie where he played as a sweet and understanding teacher, to rewatching him as the cheeky and hilarious napdeuki. I knew I had it bad when I decided to watch The Face Reader. I don't watch sageuk movie, unless it's for someone I really, really like.

I even rewatched K2H when I didn't even like that drama and going as far as searched cut scenes for Lee Soon-shin eventhough I never, ever watched weekend drama before. Fortunately, Oh My Ghostess and Jealousy Incarnate are fun dramas to rewatch for the nth time.

Well, forget about dramas and movies, I practically lapped up all his variety shows, interviews, and trailer for his upcoming project. He totally made my week non-productive. Or maybe too productive, considering the amount of comments I wrote for JI.

So, I actually signed up for an online course that is self paced and actually switched on my laptop to start with it but somehow ended up spending more than one hour in dramabeans reading past posts as I found dramabeans only a few months back. I kept telling myself, only five more minutes, only five more minutes then I ll start with it. But nope, still here. What did you do to me, dramabeans?

Also, finished watching coffe prince and I loved it. I loved that it was different from other dramas in that it didn't follow boy meets girl, fall in love, some angst then get back together in the last episode. I kept expecting angst when I knew the series was going to end, but no, it didn't come and I was relieved. Also, special thanks to javabeans who wrote so many posts about coffee prince including the book translations (which was wonderful but I loved the drama more), I read all of them and I loved it. The lead couple were adorable, it would feel like a blessing to have a relationship like them. Special mention to the yu ju-han sung couple because even almost 10 years later, I don't think kdramas are potraying their kind of adult, complicated relationship. They mostly seem to focus on first and pure love. (Or may be I have not watched that many adult kdramas?) I would write more but I think its wise to stop my rambling now. This maybe irrelevant now, but I just wanted to gush about a drama that I enjoyed so much and I have no other place than dramabeans to do that, so.

I am soooooooooooooooooooo disappointed in how Jealousy Incarnate is handling Chef's asexuality. Because apparently that's gone now? Or even, according to the characters "fixed"? Way to send a message, show.

I haven't watched Ep 22 yet and I'm really reluctant to continue because I'm not sure this is something I'm willing to overlook and I'd really hoped the drama wouldn't go this route.

I'm actually disgusted and I used to really love this drama. :(

Agree. I don't know why the writer did that. But I was not that disappointed ( probably beacuse i was never invested with the secondary characters though i enjoy their interactions immensely) with it but still found that disturbing. You should check out episode 22 for jo jung seok. Maybe its to juxtapose with hwa shin's infertility? (Which I am really sad about)

Yoo!! Yeah I was quite surprised too but I decided to Google a bit. Here's what I found on wiki how..

Understand the asexuality umbrella.
As with any sexual orientation, the label asexual is a generalization that doesn’t explain or represent everyone who identifies that way. All humans are unique and individual, and sexual orientation exists on a spectrum of needs, desires, interests, and attractions. Think of asexuality as an umbrella term that describes people who identify as asexual, gray-asexual, and demisexual.[4]
Gray-asexual means that a person experiences sexual attraction, but either not very often or only to a minimal extent.
Demisexual describes a person who only feels sexual attraction to people with whom a close emotional bond has been formed.

while yeah, when it comes to sexuality, everyone is different and just because you identify one way doesn't mean it aligns with other people who identify the same way or that you can't ever identify differently...

I don't feel like this drama tried to go into that at all, ESPECIALLY as there were several references made like "just go and cure his asexuality" etc

And Chef himself said he is not interested in any physical contact... so for him to go like "oh well I guess I am after all" without any real introspection on his part, coupled with all the "fix him" comments AND the animation of the restaurant shield becoming a man with biceps (like he has become "manly" all of a sudden) it makes it seem like their message is that asexuality is a 'problem' that one just has to overcome... yeah, I'm still disturbed.

Hwa Shin's comment at the end about how minorities should be happy in South Korea rang a bit hollow for me then.

hey Beanies!

i caught up on dramabeans podcasts while working (was doing mindless sorting, helps to break the monotony)

and thanks to an extended weekend last weekend, finally started watching Reply 1988, and am loving it so far (at episode 17), which brings me to my question : has anyone noticed that Viki links to dramabeans recaps? (i may have missed the announcement or mention in a previous OT), i find it pretty awesome (dramabeans deserves all the recognition),

And my other question, i quite loved the c-drama version of scarlet heart, as the k-drama moon lovers just finished, is there anyone who has watched both and can recommend (or not) the korean remake?

Oh dear, how do i put this? Let's just say that the c-version had all the time in the world to flesh out secondary characters and apparently had enough time to edit(what with the 30+ episodes) properly. Now the k-version i loved too, despite it's many flaws...i just wish it wasn't cursed with crappy editing and poor secondary character write up...the show had so much potential, so much....but i still watched it, for Lee Jun Ki's mane of glory

Honestly, 20 episodes would've been enough to tell the story if they utilised it correctly, and choose more carefully which character to expand more on and which to just get rid off earlier. The earlier half could've been more condensed and the later half should've been flashed out more. For example, 10th prince's birthday and wedding should've happened wayyyy earlier, and more of Baekhyun's screen time should've been used to develop 13th prince and 14th prince as they were more crucial characters in the later half. They should've introduced Woo Hee earlier too, even prior to Lady Hae's death, so her romance with Baek Ah could've been fully developed before the fight for the throne begun, instead of interjecting random scenes of them in the midst of all the bloodshed, giving us a half ass development of their relationship. Also they dragged on 8th and the heroine's romance a little too long, and it ended up shortchanging that of 4th and her's. The power struggle also should've started a lot earlier instead of only taking place in the second half of the drama. In this aspect, the k-version was really over ambitious, they basically hit reset and tried to build all the character's relationship with each other from zero, as well as their motivation to vy for the throne, whereas when Ruoxi entered the story, the power struggle between the prince was already underway, and there were already alliances that formed and opposing factions, while in the kdrama, a lot of time was wasted on this. Basically bad planning on the part of the writers, I don't know what they were doing.

Agree, 20 eps might be enough.
But kdrama mostly bad with fast paced plot and they need to sell the ost so with a lot of story to tell, in the end 20 eps won't be enough.
And another thing is, unlike c-version, there are two kings before WS get the throne. If they focus only on WS (and went to typical saeguk plot), 20 eps is enough. But no, they try to follow the original and want everything. As c-version has 30 eps, with kdrama pace I would say they will need at least 50 eps to grap everything.

I don't recommend Moon Lovers. I loved Scarlet Heart C-version to bits and had to drop Moon Lovers after some eps to save my sanity. From what I see, most people who watched Moon Lovers complain about it to no end despite it being addictive to some certain extent, so unless you want to torture yourself or waste nearly a day of your life/20 hours then no please don't watch it. :P

I would recommend the C-version for viewers who love a good story told in a coherent, beautiful way... I loved it to bits. It only loses out on the eye candy if you like drooling over good-looking heroes: the bald princes in Scarlet Heart are no comparison to the manes of glory in Moon Lovers.

I would recommend the K-version for a film class discussion or imaginative viewers who can piece together the story and character's motivations without much help from the director. When things worked it was great (episode 11), but these moments were not frequent, just often enough to keep us hooked.

My problem with Moon Lovers was mainly on its plot, that it's too weak and have very bad characters' development. Bu Bu Jing Xin the novel had everything nailed down properly to the tiniest details, and Scarlet Heart was warm and precious and was an irresistibly beautiful tragedy. At the beginning I wasn't very impressed with the princes either, especially the 8th and the 4th (main ones, ha!). Then gradually as the story unfolded, since all the characters were developed so well even the minor ones, they had their own charms and I got really attached to them as if I knew them in person. They made me care for them and feel all the feels, and I could put that over any stories with beautiful people but simply annoy me. Plus, I think the 13th and the 14th in Scarlet Heart were quite handsome though? :D

I wished with all my heart that I would like Moon Lovers, and I did appreciate the writer's effort to juggle between the original novel and Korean history, but one's effort and the visual solely wouldn't be able to save it. This is just my take on it, that I wouldn't recommend dramas that could potentially ruin your sanity and leave bad taste :D But yeah, for some film class discussions or imaginative/high tolerance viewers, maybe...

As a person who watched it from the get go; I'd say 60 hours at best.

20hrs the SBS version

20hrs the International version (we somehow managed to put two and two together with both version.

20 hours of recap, rants, and conspiracy theory at Dramabeans.

Yeah, and that's minimum hours. If you're extra diligent, probably more hours spent.

I watched both. I loved Bu Bu Jing Xin, but I think I'm probably not as diehard as some. I'm actually okay with Moon Lovers, for me, they were different enough that I never really compared them. I think like the first half, despite editorial/directional problems, I did quite like the story and I thought it was quite clever the way they integrated BBJX's plot into the Goryeo backdrop. Plus I loved the way they rewrote the 4th prince to better fit the historical figure he was based on. The problem does stem from here though, in rewriting the 4th prince's character, they had to rewrite the heroine's character as well, because in no universe would Wang So fall in love with Ruoxi, hence we are left with Hae Su, whom I love sometimes but I also want to scream at her at times. In rewriting the 4th prince, the writer also had to change 8th's personality/motivation significantly to fit to the plot, though to be honest, I liked the change.

The biggest problem ended up being that the writers created a very different story from the original, and it was only in the last 4 episodes or so, I was flipping pissed off with the writers cause they were trying too hard to reconcile their story with BBJX's ending and ended up like ruining a few characters a long the way. I would say its a very polarising drama, for me, it was a 10 at times, and a 0 at others. I don't regret watching it though, cause I really loved the OTP, and I loved Lee Joon Gi's Wang So. Probably comes down to how attached you are to BBJX.

So I finally started with the 1% OF ANYTHING remake and gah, it definitely became the highlight of my week! This drama is so cute and sweet. Ha Seokjin's portrayal of Lee Jaein actually made the character a lot better! I also find Jeon Somin vvv endearing and don't even get me started with their chemistry!! Jaein and Dada is one of my favorite new couples!

I also started the Taiwanese drama BROMANCE since I've been hearing raves about it for the past year but yes, the explanation why she is living her life as a boy baffled me so I never really tried it. So far, I find this drama really pretty (the colors! the actors!) and lighthearted. Megan Lai is the best part and her chemistry with Baron is too much. I've watched a lot of behind the scenes and omg, my heart! One of the actors (Bii) is reminding me of Luhan though (I think it's the hair and the earrings lol)

Happy Friday, everyone!!!

Don't know about anyone else but I am quietly enjoying Nigeru wa Haji da ga Yaku ni in my corner here.

The premise is absolutely absurd... but somehow the drama just works.

Some people seem to be annoyed by Kazumi, but I'm not so much. 1) Part of me thinks he's actually not interested in our lead girl but rather is playing around to push Hiramasa out of his comfort zone (adverse way of cheering for someone's happiness) 2) Even if he is actually interested in Mikuri, she isn't. She said it beautifully to Hiramasa herself: "I like you best". She's not looking for the conventionally handsome, swoony guy – that doesn't attract her.

My 1st Japanese Drama of the Year. Just 5 minutes in i was totally into it. 15min time for kdramas. I watched Hanamizuki movie of Yui Aragaki 2 weeks ago and recommended it in Open thread and as we can see she is the face of the show and created some buzz for it.

The news channels Mini-Series or Documentary style is surely quite appealing. The Other one our main male lead who looks like a normal human being than a overly stylish and face painted handsome Oppa.

Hiramasa is just too beta!!? Japanese beta male. I would like to see some proactive attitude from him.

As usual our Female Heroine is far different from any of kdramas main female lead and that in itself makes it much more fun to watch. This is why i have compared this show with 1% of anything and still i find Nigeru a Better watch.

No amount of forced skinship and forced scenarios can save a weekly designed characters and loosely drawn story.

1% of anything - 7 out of 10 - 1st 5 episodes

We Married as a Job - 8.5 out of 10 1st 3 episodes.

I also like that Hiromasa looks like a normal human being. And he's the same height as Mikuri so I'm sure all short Japanese men watching feel like there's finally someone they can relate too.

I don't find Hiromasa too beta – well, I'd like him to be more proactive, but I understand why he isn't: I think he represents a very real member of Japanese society. He's almost a hikikomori, except that he hasn't shut himself in his room. He's smart, has a job where he's respected but lacks social experience, especially with women. But the drama will allow him to grow – not change completely, but grow and actually have new experiences that he never thought he would have. I also love that despite the fact that he is withdrawn, he is actually more clued in than many male lead drama characters: he totally understands that housework is REAL WORK. Him putting a price on it was more empowering to female Japanese housewives than many supposedly feminist career-woman-jdramas have been.

Required fields are marked *

I completely agree with you. But i don't consider him a Hikikomori. He might show some traits of it but mentally he is quite different from them. In the same way he shows some of beta traits but he isn't.

I'm looking for Hiromasa's growth. Houework efforts too easily overseen or neglected but by attributing money to such work writer has rightfully terms houewives as house-managers.

I don't think he's a hikikomori either – as you say, he has traits of one. Same with the geek/nerd, same with the beta-male/herbivore. A reminder perhaps that individuals that we carelessly put into one box might actually come with many shades of grey.

Loving it. Watching the new raw episodes while waiting the subs. Only jdramas seem to do that for me. Also, I love the actress. She plays quirky really well. I wonder why she wants the marriage as a job? Why couldn't she be a live-in maid instead?

I think it's because it would be socially improper?

Like you can't be a live-in maid for a guy? Not to say that that never happens in Japanese society but I think they are playing to still generally held norms.

Plus, I do think that the drama opted for this absurd framework on purpose – there's social commentary here. We see "maid" as a paid profession, but a housewife/wife just has "duties" – and yet, they do the same work (minus the personal relationship).

0

Required fields are marked *

This.

From start writer has done social commentary over the role of housewives. Hope Writer includes house husbands too.

If we can have Love Hotels in every few KMs then why can't live-in maid. Japan isn't new to live-in Relationships either. We have dozens and dozens of shoujo manga deriving their energy from forced cohabitation.

But yeah socially it feels Improper.

0

Required fields are marked *

I think it depends on your social/cultural background whether it's improper or not.

Not sure I would take shoujo manga with their contrived scenarios as much of a reflection of the Japanese reality (other than being a fictionalised scenario of what probably rarely happens, hence the appeal of this "fantasy" in the shoujo manga to viewers).

There's also social commentary with the openly gay guy and the unmarried 49-year old aunt (who as much as she would like to marry, is not willing to settle at all – yeah for her!).

0

surely fictional content isn't reflection of a society but they do show changing trends in society. Live-in relationships aren't as much forbidden or something at all.

I properly watched episode 03 now and able to see Yuri-Chan's double trouble of being alone or not. The Old gay guy actually confused me. What exactly is his deal. He surely likes to make some sound comments but I still haven't got any nuance of his character so i have missed the social commentary he brings into the story. on the other hand Handsome Guy's Role and views are pretty clear in 1st 3 episodes and yet his objectives are shown to be vague. That Sharing Though.

We Married as a Job is far more than Romance.

Yes it has been a truth universally acknowledged that an expected salary of a housewife/mother is sky high. It is a high paying job indeed. I very much like to see what happens if they do fall in love. Will she keep getting her salary? Will she give it up? Will they still draw contracts?

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

I think the reason for marriage as a job is because of societal norms. A housewife is an accepted respectable role in their society. Her family would not approve of her living in a 1 bedroom apartment as a single man's servant- too weird and she would certainly be a topic for neighborhood gossip and disapproval as being unmarried would throw her morals into question. They are both private people who want to maintain a conventional appearance.

The leads' parents seem very traditional as well. She rejected the idea of him skipping proper introductions if I remember correctly? She guided him on what to say to her parents. Even if her parents were traditional, they finally obliged their daughter's wishes to not have a ceremony. Probably traditional in some ways, open in others. It broke my heart a little, when the parents weren't able to celebrate their children's wedding in a big way. It is only now, as a grown adult, do I understand the importance of a proper wedding.

Good morning, everybody! I woke up today and it was chilly inside of my room--my feet were cold. That means winter is officially bearing down on us. ^^ And I'm feeling super successful in life--I managed to study for a midterm, watch a few episodes of drama and get my 1,667 words for Nanowrimo in! Let's see if I can manage that again today, eh?

the K2: Wait, so now Je-ha gets the supercomputer? Sweeeet. I really want to see him do some damage with that ability. Strangely enough, the inter-company governmental politics are one of the best parts about this show, when I normally avoid them since they get boring and hard to follow. They totally work here. It's super fun for me to watch Yoo-Jin and the rest plot, Anna try and stay afloat/act like a big player as a small fish in big water, and Je-ha trying to balance them all and protect her while still respecting her decisions. And I just think they're cute together.

The Man Living In Our House: This drama needs to be talked about more. I was up until 1AM watching it yesterday, and I went in to squeal to my roommates at the end. They just laughed and told me they loved me. Seriously! I love this show! It got off to a slow start, but now that I feel like I understand why he married her mother I'm super excited to see what happens next. Becoming her stepfather was still an interesting way to go about it, but... it's a Kdrama, that's why it's fun. And the ninja/angsty teenage girl? I love her. ^^

When A Snail Falls In Love: This is a Cdrama and I am singing to the heavens right now. Do you know how long I've waited for a C-drama to honestly hook me? Not just watch because I feel good when I can understand something? It's been a while. But when it happens it's beautiful, and I absolutely love this drama. It's not as intense as Love Me If You Dare (yet) but that's ok, it doesn't need to be. And I already love our female lead--a female, yes female, geeeeenius criminal profiler. They're not falling over themselves in awe for her, but I can live with that. She's still a geeeeenius. ^^

Those of you who have tried making korean food, what's your favorite? Or did you like it at all? I'm going out to eat with my Korean class today and want to know what's best. Happy Friday!

I really like that film vibe of the directing and choreography! Have you tried Memory Lost or The Medical Examiner Dr. Qin as well?

I'm thinking about starting Medical Examiner Dr Qin- is it good? The premise intrigues me since they say it's China's version of CSI. I can't find subs though so I'll need to watch it raw so I'm wondering if it will be worth the effort.

Because I'm watching the Jdrama Cold Case, which is adapted from the US drama which so far has been pretty exciting but only has 2 episodes subbed, so I'm thinking Dr Qin should keep me entertained while I wait for the next episodes of Cold Case to be subbed.

WOW, China is catching up fast. They may outclass Korea in few years.

0

I have to say, though, that actually quite a lot of Cdramas from the past have had high production values, great cinematography, etc., but that it just hasn't been across the board... Examples are: The Grand Gate Mansion, Three Kingdoms, The Smiling Proud Wanderer , The Legend of Zhen Huan, and many other (mostly historical?) dramas..

Apart from a few super-famous ones, I think it's just that they haven't been on the radar or typical Dramabeans watchers. And I've noti that they're often very long dramas, too. So that may be another deterring factor.

Father i'll take care of you trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPxDP3FXrDA
All 4 teasers available on Official youtube account of mbsdrama.

Park Eun Bin aka Ji Won of Age of Youth as main female character. Taw Hwan 2nd male lead of Thumping Spike and an Extra in W - Two World bagged main role.

I'm more interested in this Family drama than gap soon and tailors.

As for thoughts - Female vehicle drivers especially Car Drivers aka Main female characters driving heavy vehicles.

There is a stereotype that females usually are bad drivers and panic and do mistakes. Accident, altercation stats of each and every country say otherwise.

1st of all our Kdrama heroines are poor or belong to lower-middle class or mid-level middle class hence can't spend much on fuel or buy cars. All hail public transport and reduce the carbon emissions. It is played for humour and cuetsy moments but it doesn't feel appropriate to me. This steryotye gives good competition of Wrist GrabCliche.

Misaeng - Young Yi - slowly driving that heavy vehicle truck on a main road.
Cinderella - Hye Ri drove too slowly on another main road.

Drinking Solo - Park Ha Na driving expensive car of Jin Seok.

These are recent ones i can remember Countered by Geum Joo of Woman with a suitcase happily driving a car and 2nd brother's wife in Ojakkyo Brothers. These are the few i can remember for now.

How this thought came to my mind? YOUTUBE. Youtube recommended a comedy South Korean show's video. I don't know what that show was but the whole scene was all about making fun of Female Characters bad driving skills which lead to some amusing expressions and insults.

Yes. There are many other competent female drivers in kdramaworld but general views still consider females not comeptent enough to deal with Tech. I find it quite amusing.

Humour is generated at the expense of characters especially female characters. And this bad-female-drivers stereotype feels quite unfair.

I'm feeling really conflicted about the man living in our house .
I love the drama (soo ae! robot museum guy! healer daddy!) and can't wait for the new episodes , but some commenters mentioned kim young kwangs interview about "ugly girls" and now I feel conflicted everytime I find na gil as cute as I do.

Isn't it strange how this kind of background information changes our views, even though we know that fictional characters are not the same as the actors portraying them?

It let's me appreciate actors that shroud themselves in mystery more, it's easier to fall into the illusion for me.

Anyone sharing my feelings?

Yeah every time I see him appear I always instantaneously remember how mocking he was towards girls who didn't fit his beauty standard, and like, get immediately ticked off.

Kim Young-kwang was definitely an ass for saying it and it's sort of a pity when your image gets associated with one thing you said for life. But then again, he shouldn't have been so mean-spirited about it, so there's that as well.

You are right, he said it 3 years ago, and I can kind of commiserate because I do suffer from "foot in mouth"-syndrome, which I guess this was an extreme case of (he could have said he liked "pretty girls" like aaaalll the other actors, which is basically the same sentiment, just put diplomatically)

But still, he really was very mocking about it and i feel very sensitive on that topic - beauty is just something you can only influence up to a point, e.g. you can't change your nose by excercing more - and I always feel it is extremely insensitive to mock something that can't be changed (especially when it is a model doing he mocking)

Yeah and he went the extra mile by giving examples of what he considered to be ugly, I believe? Like dude, that was totally unnecessary. It's a fine line between having an (unpopular) opinion and being a dick.

So yeah... not going to watch The Man Living In Our House because I don't really want to have thoughts of "he must be happy surrounded by all these beautiful people and being paid to act for the people he thinks are super ugly right??" running through my head lol.

0

Let's try to put this aside n enjoy the drama. No point dismissing off one drama becos of what one of the leads have said.

0

@mushmush and @KDramaWatcher2609: I still read the recaps on-and-off, just not that interested in the show itself. Besides Kim Young-kwang is just one reason--I just haven't been taken by the plot yet either!

0

While I think every culture venerates good looks, I found it quite jarring how openly appearance was commented on right to a person's face when I began watching K dramas. When people exclaim how handsome you are as soon as you meet them must affect your ego and self worth. While a western style compliment goes along the lines of "you look great" which can encompass a person's fashion choices, grooming, fitness or expression, the compliment "how handsome" refers only to the genetic gift they had no control over. Is this an oversimplification lost in translation? The thought pops up every time that line appears in an Asian drama.

0

@Kbas: I also find it interesting how the compliment in Korean has the literal meaning of "(you) were born well". It's, like you said, a reference to something a person doesn't really have any control over.

0

@kumoiwa - wow, I didn't know that's the literal translation, that's quite something!

@kbas that was confounding to me as well! Sometimes they even openly talk about someone not being beautiful enough or too ugly, I found that so strange when I first watched kdrama.

It must really spin a persons mind if their countries view on beauty is so focused on genetics. It certainly goes a way to explain the abundance of cosmetic surgeries...

0

Maybe Kdramas can rehabilitate him?

He could play a rich Chaebol jerk who only likes "pretty" people. One day he gets into a car wreck, goes blind, and has amnesia. A golden-hearted girl takes him in and he falls for her inner beauty (since he can't see anything).
When he finally regains his memory, finds his rich family, and can afford the operation to restore his sight, he'll have to confront the truth. He's in love with a beautiful-hearted "ugly" girl. He'll overcome his jerkdom and declare his love for her publicly. They'll live happily ever after. And in real life, Kim Young-Keang will be cured. Find a writer, stat! It's a real-life Kdrama emergency.

He is not that handsome to say things like this...

imo I think story-wise Moon Lovers would have benefited from casting a top hallyu star as Ruoxi/Hae Soo (someone with the status of Ha Ji Won or Song Hye Gyo, I can't think of anyone right now though) and moderately popular actors for the princes. That way the story would've been female-centric like the original, and every important relationship with the princes could've been properly developed. Of course that wouldn't have fixed the glaring directing, editing and pacing issues. To me one of their biggest mistake is that it took almost 13 episodes for king Taejo to die and then they had to cram 3 kings in 7 episodes.

0

Required fields are marked *

I second that opinion...not necessarily a "top star" actress, but someone who could portray a strong 21st century woman who knew what she was doing, who used history to her advantage, like in the C-drama version, though I'd blame the writer for Hae Soo's indecision and lack of faith. The thing with Scarlet Heart is that works best when we have a good portrayal of the relationship btwn characters, both main and secondary. Time was wasted on some secondary characters, when relationship b/n others could have been promoted(take 14th prince's love for Hae Soo). Scalet Heart could have done well witn better editing, writing and more episodes tbh...so much potential gone down the drain

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

Hmmm yeah the writer was much more preoccupied with trying to paint a sympathetic picture of Wang So than giving a proper focus to Hae Soo's thoughts and feelings as an individual. I think it also comes as a consequence of their decision to make it so heavily male-focused, but even so I don't think they were successful in what they set out to do either. Yeah I agree with you about the relationships and the lost potential, they had good material with both the novel and the real history to make a compelling drama but they didn't know how to use it. Such a waste.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Honestly no, if I had to choose between Ha Ji Won, Song Hye Kyo and IU for Hae Soo, I would've chosen IU anyway. Neither Ha Ji Won nor Song Hye Kyo would've fitted either Ruoxi nor Hae Soo, they needed someone really young, in their early to mid-20s and in that respect they really narrowed their options. Plus IU is a top hallyu star, she might not be a great actress, but her popularity is undeniable. However, I would not oppose if they found a better actress who fitted Hae Soo's image either.

I do agree that they should've made the story more female lead-centric. I think it shifted towards Wang So's favour because Lee Joon Gi was portraying him. But nonetheless, they should've made Hae Soo the centre of the show.

Ultimately, it doesn't matter who they casted. The problem was with all the money they spent on the production, you figured they'd hire a more competent writer. Someone who could've done the adaptation justice by actually understanding the core of BBJX, which was the heroine's short but eventful life in the Qing dynasty, where she loved two princes deeply, had friends whom she'd die for and who would have done the same for her, and how she ultimately and unknowingly brought everyone to their demise by attempting to change history and instead brought about a predestined paradox. It was tragically beautiful, and each character had no one to blame but themselves. This is something that MLSHR missed on, they missed the opportunity to actually highlight Hae Soo's part and role in history.

I'm just going to be straight up honest here: Kim Kyu-tae SUCKS BALLS.

He had great source material, great actors and actresses, actually alright scripts, SO much money to spend, AND he still failed? I just... this is literal hubris at play here, isn't it. His inability to direct his actors well and craft together a legible narrative just wows me to no end. Also that romanticisation of Baek-ah and his niece that will have a future affair with him--who thought that was okay? I'm so disappointed because it could have been so much more. Not even going to talk about that half-assed ending, because ugh.

Meanwhile, JI continues to amaze by tackling oft-taboo topics in society and wielding its dialogue and direction with an incredibly masterful touch. Cried during Hwa-shin's closing statement, because ugh, most noble thing to do ever.

Louie, Jealousy Incarnate and 1% of Something are the drama highlights of my week right now, with K2 andLaurel Tree Tailors in the category of interesting enough to watch but not really invested.

I am glad to see JI's sensitive portrayal of the struggles men have with breast cancer, but on a couple of other subjects I think they have dropped the ball on accuracy in order to create more dramatic conflict. The first being the sterility issues, and the second being Chef's problems. I'd have to go back and watch to remember the details...but...there are a lot of men middle aged and older that struggle with (medical and/or physiological) issues related to physical intimacy. That doesn't make them asexual. That whole topic could warrant a sensitive portrayal in a drama but will likely never get it.

On another note, I am rather bummed that Memory Lost still hasn't been picked up by either Viki or DramaFever. No sign of English subbed episodes elswhere, either.

I don't really like how Jealousy Incarnate has dealt with the asexuality angle, and it's a pity given how the drama has handled the breast cancer topic. It just feels like Chef's asexuality was tacked on as some sort of time filler or something to be "cured" in the battle of the two moms.

Still, it's been the Jo Jung-seok show and I'll just be grateful for that.

I want to thank the beanies who mentioned or recommended When A Snail Falls In Love

Although I am Chinese, I am most critical of Chinese dramas, LOL. Then came Nirvana In Fire. That drama was all sort of epic awesomeness. Sadly, it is one in a million rather than your average C drama. I tried The Disguiser, Love Me If You Dare but I just couldn't get into them. They were far from bad but didn't hook me.

For some reason, I like When A Snail Falls In Love. I started it because I had to check out Wang Kai but the cast is pretty good. The female lead is kind of strange but she's playing a strange character so she's just acting the part. The production quality is really good and the cinematography too. I still facepalm whenever I am reminded of how terrible Moon Lovers was in this aspect. Send PD and camera team to China Boot Camp?

I binge watch all 6 eps and can't wait for more.

Why are all my current favs so short?

I read up a bit on the history of written Chinese, and it is pretty messy. At one time there were over 12,000 recognized characters, some of them made up on the spot and known only to a few dozen people. Part of the reason it stayed so complicated was to keep the average peasant from learning to read.

Ok it sounds terrible that I don't know the history of my mother tongue but I never knew this bit :P

Chinese characters are logograms and each unique in itself. This system take a lot more memory work and writing practice for learners.

I found this article http://english-for-chinese.blogspot.sg/2011/10/why-chinese-language-should-not-adopt.html
which has a simple theory of why Chinese Language was never developed into phonetic.

As an adult, I still struggle with Chinese daily, mostly in form of encouraging my children with the subject. They prefer English because they almost never need to study spelling whereas for Chinese, there's no escape, LOL.

Chinese is hard for me too (especially writing, typing is fine), and Korean has been much easier for me to learn... but for some reason my heart just loves Chinese.

Do try out Love Me If You Dare again. The english swearing at the beginning and end nearly made me drop it, but the series was good enough I didn't. Wang Kai has a major part throughout the show, and no spoilers but it gets super intense later on.

I just started it and so far it is fun. I compare it to Refresh Man in terms of silliness and seriousness. A cute and determined reported gets stranded on an island with her nemesis, an elite bodyguard who usually thwarts her attempts to get a story.

The lead actress waffles between adorable and screechy, but I like the plot. Granted, the scenarios are contrived, but in a fun way. It is definitely not in the serious vein of When a Snail Loves or LMIYD, but fun and sweet. So far, so good.

Most Chinese dramas (and movies) totally suck. There are a few exceptions that stand out. "Snail" is one of the few that is actually good.

Not sure why there are so many bad ones. Part I am sure is due to the heavy censorship in China, but even when covering non-controversial subjects, they just seem to have no "heart" - like everyone is just going through the motions. China also produces a ton of fantasy/ancient warrior types - most of those are visually great but have crappy plots, WAY too much of super-ninja 40 foot jumping around scenes.

I see it as a massive assembly line. Everything the Chinese do, they do it in double quick time and more than double the volume. I mean, this is the world's most populated nation and they only need to serve their own domestic consumption and not care about exporting Chinese dramas/movies.

Most of my all time favorite Chinese movies go a long way back. Those films were more artistic and had 'heart'. They were a lot more interesting.

After a week of following the political scandal in South Korea I am convinced every single makjang drama out of Korea has a kernel of truth in it.

Plus this year I read The Vegetarian (Han Kang) and I'll be Right Here (Kyung-Sook Shin). Both of which make you think a lot about the dark undertow to Korean life.

Come to think of it even the lightest of K-dramas have a sense of darkness at times. Much lies beneath the surface gloss and beauty - this is true of all places but perhaps the contrast feels stronger in Korea because there is so much striving for a surface perfection.

On a happier note as the year ends I thought of female performances I particularly liked in stuff I saw this year (its not like I ddidn't like male performances but they never interest me enough to make a list, the only exception was Jo Jung-suk). Some of these actresses I had never seen in any work before so it was a pleasant discovery. In no particular order:

Kim Min-hee and Kim Tae-ri in The Handmaiden
Im Soo-jung in Happiness (part of a set of Hur Jin-ho DVDs I was gifted - best gift!)
Kim Seul-gi in Splash Splash Love and OMG.
Park Bo-young in OMG
Gong Hyo-jin in Thank You (I came to this late)
Na Moon-hee in Dear My Friends, really the cast was terrific but I liked her shade better
Kim Ha-neul, Jang Hee-jin and Choi Yeo-jin in OTWTTA
Han ye-ri in Age of Youth
Han Hyo-joo in W
Lee Da-hee in I can Hear Your Voice

Watching Jealousy Incarnate made me recollect how much I liked Lee Mi-suk in Untold Scandal so I re-watched it. Always a pleasure to watch LMS and JDY.

She got talent and finally got the recognition she deserves from Chungmuro through her hard work over years. But it's probably ruined and tainted by that one fleeting affair.

@gabobobobo I am not sure how the Korean industry works but I guess it depends. Scandals seem to affect film actors less (most seem to be around pop stars or drama stars). Neither party seems to depend on their public image for their careers anyway.

@janezelda, she is indeed and I wish she did more roles like that (her roles now are more urban).

@junny, agree.

Happy Weekend everyone

Jealousy seems to be the underlying theme of the contract romance this week. We have the thin line of jealousy because of heart vs the reality of contract merge into indecisive decision in both Nigeru and 1% of Something

In Nigeru wa Haji da ga Yaku ni Tatsu , all the conversation and interaction is self-aware because they are afraid to get into the romance when they apparently care about each other more than any other person (looked, the soup will not as good as mikuri think if she didn't make it for hiramasa)

All the things in the contract IMO are the right attitude in marriage, like the budget and breaking the relationship after finding a love. It’s ideal and fair but it is sensitive talks when you include the heart.

I like how the show managed to give them problem and trouble even if the couple is compatible and understand each other. The problem arises because how they interacted with other people in marriage disguised while finding themselves within each other. Surprisingly Mikuri understands Hiramasa behaviour and she gets it. Hiramasa, on the other hand finds himself uncomfortable with the feeling of affection to her since they have a contract.

Then they dropped a bomb in ep 3 (shaaare) but also saved it in ep 4 (Mikuri did right!)

Now in 1% of something I find their dating agony is realistic and unfortunate at the same time,
We knew they compatible but love that Dada wear flat shoes (lol).
Dada and Jae In really lived in different world that have different people,
Dada has friends and people who care about her, be there for her like Hyun-Jin but Jae In only has people who want to take advantage of him, not generally loved him ,
that's why it really makes sense that their family gonna crash, they literally lived in different world,
it break my heart that it's a hardship I can predict and I can see their point.
This week episode is all about misunderstanding and misses timing when trouble happen at least our couple knew that they need to throw a little bit tantrum and solve it after.

The things that interesting about 1% is how they both aware they liked each other but they also knew it would end as the contract stated. It’s like the contract speaks to them that this short happiness will end as a beautiful memory.
They changed but they didn’t really adjust to the point of marriage partner cause they afraid, what if the relationship without contract work? What if we get hurt? What if he/she not the only one?

It’s the realisation that it will end that makes them do the best to make the relationship work but now after it works so well, it’s the contract that also reminds them that this happiness probably only applied for a limited time,

it's hard to ask Jae In and Dada to really commit to change their perception. I find Dada teased and little complaint about him is fair but she can't asked more or make him really follow it cause they are not gonna...

Jae In also can't really angry about the phone call causet their relationship will ends,

= Solution? Just asked her/him out =

Rental Kyushitsu : I want to talk a lot but this is a lovely drama about benriya in a more dangerous zone with camera, youtube, rap music, and herooooooo (love it)

I didn’t watch many dramas this week and I still sick with flu.. aaah

TGIF! And I'm really excited for what's to come this weekend! Tomorrow I'm going to compete in something, so it's going to be so much fun!

Oh man, the finale of Moon Lovers ruined me. Poor Su, poor Jung, poor Baek-ah. Heck, poor So! Will there be any scenes of modern So released in the future? I hope so - the last scene was adorable but it didn't offer much closure.

Finally, my birthday is this Monday, so I'm counting down until I become a year older. Since it's on a Monday, though, I might not even have time to celebrate! Oh well, at least I can sneak in a piece of cake somewhere...

Happy Friday! Ugh Moon Lovers ending- I was disappointed it didn't go C-version all the way (SoSu meeting). With such low ratings (even though it has immense popularity overseas) I wonder if they will make some sequals. Oh well. Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim (to air after Moon Lovers) had the production press conference. [OSEN, The Fact] This drama has Han Suk-kyu(Deep rooted tree), Yoo Yeon-suk(Reply 94) and Seo Hyun-jin(OHYA) with PD Yoo In-sik who worked on projects like Giant and Mrs.Cop, and the writer Kang Eun-kyung (Gu Family book) at the helm.

About the question "Medical drama again?" PD Yoo said "Doctor(drama) put focus on the story of youth, but we get into the world of medical occupation more deeply. It is the story of people with passionate hearts who's goal are giving all they got to their works. I think the viewers want to see the people who agonize and make an fierce effort in where they are. Since their love and conflicts are dissolved into the drama, viewers will find one heart-warming drama." PD Yoo is excited about casts. "Han Suk-kyu sunbae-nim has always been in great projects ever since I dreamed to become a PD. He is still the legend. Whenever I see him he reminds me of the time my heart was passionate so I am shooting excited."

It is first time in 21 years for Han Suk-kyu doing a modern show (plays Teacher Kim). His last project was Sageuk 'Secret Door' in 2014. He recollected while he was questioning "What is an actor" he got an offer for 'Romantic Doctor' and accepted it because he agreed to the production intention of "With What people live?" About working with other actors, he wants to add 'co-workers' to the 3 elements of a play - actor, audience, and scripts. "They, seniors and juniors all have same goal and dream, and only difference among them is who started first." He felt troubled thinking acting is 'fake' and himself who plays a character is 'fake' but convinced that audience can feel many things by the doctor portrayed by teacher Kim and the story Kim accomplishing something with people around him.
Han also mentioned comedian Jung Sung-ho who does impression of him. "I was worried what if people laugh at me acting because of Jung Sung-ho. I am paying attention to intonation and such." (Upon hearing this, Comedian Jung Sung-ho said "I am forever grateful to Han Suk-kyu sunbae-nim. I am who I am now thanks to his voice. If he felt uncomfortable because of me, I hope he forgives me thinking I just did it to make a living as a father of 4 children. I do tons of impressions but the thing people want to hear the most is impression of him.")

Seo Hyun-jin plays a hot-blooded doctor Yeon Seo-jung who has bright personality and treats patients with passion and earnest. Seo said "She is a person who chose her occupation to get approval from people. But when she meets Teacher Kim, she learns the real reason why she chose the occupation and how to live." As to why she picked this project Seo said "I wanted to do a professional drama. This is my first medical genre. I flung myself into the work without knowing it would be this hard. Compared to other genre, there are 3 or 4 times more stuff to memorize. I do repeating practice. First goal was to memorize the structure of man(Anatomy) but couldn't make it. I keep practicing so that at least I can do finger skills to certain degree. I heard many good things about PD-nim and Writer-nim. Also how great I could work with Han Suk-kyu and Yoo Yeon-suk." PD Yoo said about Seo, "Seo Hyun-jin is an actress who does clean acting which I like the best. She expresses what she has inside without using technique or habits. She is a good actress who can make you feel realistic even when it sounds cheesy."

Yoo Yeon-suk also talked about the reason why he picked this drama. "MY BF Son Ho-joon praised production team after working with PD Yoo, and I worked with the writer on 'Gu Family Book' which had good scripts. When I heard Teacher Kim was Han Suk-kyu sunbae-nim and Yoo Seo-jung was played by Seo Hyun-jin, I thought "I must do it no matter what". Also he recalled his debut project 'General Hospital 2' where he prepared but never had chance to use his medical knowledge. "I actually had training in the hospital and watched the surgery, but didn't have a chance to show it in the drama. So I personally thought I might be able to resolve the regrets from that time." PD Yoo said about his casting, "Writer-nim said she wishes to see the image of youth who suffers with illness called life from Kang Dong-joo. Yoo Yeon-suk who has full of curiosity and energy of healthy young man infuses live-feel to Kang Dong-joo with his spirit." Previously PD Yoo said, "I wonder if new image of Yoo Yeon-suk will be created by this drama. If you think Chilbongi played melo and sweet creating the first-love image who made your heart fluttered, Kang Dong-joo is young man who is unsociable, difficult and butt-heads in this drama, but this role really seems to fit him. I don't know because I am not a woman, but he has good reaction on the set."

Romantic doctor fighting! Hope it doesn't get too serious.

Ji Soo had an interview for 'Moon Lovers' and 'Fantastic'. [Star News]
Ji Soo (23) is an actor known for doing multiple projects. Recently he played 14th prince Wang Jung in 'Moon Lovers' and lawyer Kim Sang-wook in 'Fantastic'. "I thought if I was shown in both of Sageuk and modern shows, I would look cool, but that didn't seem to be the case. I felt lacking and disappointment. I didn't feel comfortable watching some parts, thinking "I should have acted this way or that way." My weak points were showing in both shows and I even wished the show to end sooner. Even though there were like 10 second feel-good moments on some shining scenes, I didn't feel proud overall. I think I have to work harder."

He had noona romance in 'Fantastic'. "I dated a woman who was 3 years older than me. I don't think I've ever dated younger woman. And even though she was older than me, we were like friends, so that was not helpful for noona romance acting. Still since all the memories in life become abundant resource, and they were really good memory, I could dissolve them into my acting." He feels satisfaction playing a cheerful role in a drama unlike in a movie. "I am trying to do what is inside of me whether it is movie or drama, but I'd like to be a love expert. I'd like to be like romancist/romanticist. In reality I am not like that so I am learning to become one. [In Fantastic] I liked comments [like 'Noona ssi']. But I was a lawyer, and it was hard. There is a way of talking a lawyer uses in his daily life, which was new to me, so delivering the lines was difficult. In addition to lines being difficult, I had to do the romance, which was difficult but also fun."
About his partner Park Si-yeon in the show, he said "I felt strange but refreshing. I liked her [as an actress] and I worked thinking I should not damage her filmography. Even though we had age gap, sunbae-nim told me to call her 'Noona' and treated me comfortably, so I could do shooting feeling at ease."

He often hears he looks similar to Nam Joo-hyuk (Moon Lovers). "I really felt great when I heard I looked like Joo-Hyuk gun. That is the time I think I am good looking. There was even a time someone shouted "That is Nam Joo-hyuk!" when I passed by. There was also time when Joo-hyuk walked by, someone shouted "That is Ji Soo!". I thought we looked similar at first glance. We talked like "I have manly eyes and you have round eyes. Your skin tone is brighter- things like that".

Ji Soo had acute osteomyelitis during 'Fantastic' filming and took a brief break. "I made a good recovery and am having regular checkup. I did shooting limping 4 days before the surgery. I just thought I shouldn't show the pain without knowing what it was. It was really painful and I felt like I was having the most difficult time in my life. When I am thinking back now, I feel amazed that time flied because I even think "Did I ever get sick?". During that difficult time I gave a lot of thought about acting. I thought "Acting is really big part of me. I may be able to shoot again after one month. I hope it doesn't impact my next project". Now I don't overwork and recovery seems going well. I think I can show me acting up in my next project."

For the next project he picked JTBC's new drama 'Strong woman Do Bong-soon'. He will work with Park Bo-young(Oh My Ghostess) who is 3 years older than him. "Park Bo-young noona said it was first for her to act with younger man. It is an honor to work with her whom I really like. I always had one-sided crush in shows, but this time I play the role who receives the crush. I felt happy and thought "That person is Park Bo-young? I must be getting compensated for my leg trouble." Park Hyung-sik hyung also appears and I think it will be really fun."

In 'Do Bong-soon', he plays a guy named Guk-doo."He is an upright cop, might look like a nimble wild horse, not interested in woman, and looks like CheunDaeRe(cold outwardly only), but actually warm and kind. When you hear the name Guk-doo first time, you think what the heck a strange name, but now I feel it is very cute. He might be that kind of character." Busy actor Ji Soo says he wants to be a good actor. "Originally my first goal was to become an actor who can act very well, but meeting many sunbae-nim made me realize that good person is good actor. I also want to participate in good projects. Even though I said I wanted to become a good actor in short, my wish is to be a good person, good actor who does good acting and be part of good projects."

Ji Soo fighting! But don't work too hard.

I got to see a Korean movie in theater yesterday here in the US! It's called The Handmaiden, it was shown at a small old school local theater. It's nothing like the kdramas I usually watch, definitely nothing like Moonlight lol. It's got some dark and very explicit content. The hubby begrudgingly accepted to go with me (he usually rolls his eyes at my kdramas) but in the end he liked it too. Ha! He even wants to see it again to catch all the details :)

Here is interview with PD Sin Won-ho of reply series which I mentioned in last OT.[OSEN] It has been 9 months since Reply 88 ended, but people are still very curious about his next project. PD Sin used to be a variety PD in KBS and planned on making a drama only after he moved to tvN, ended up making 'National drama' Reply series (Reply 97, 94, 88).
He said because of so much attention given to the show, he felt suffering everyday during filming.
"Writer Lee Yoo-jung and I are the type who put all energy into the project when we work. Everyone even worried if we might die. Especially when we shoot Reply 88, I felt unbearable hardship enough that I wanted to crush down the set with my own hands. My group chat message was always "I am not happy at all." after midpoint of the show."

There is a saying 'Reply curse'- Leads from the series failed to maintain the hype and recognition they received during Reply show in the projects that followed. PD Sin laughed saying the expression is funny. "I think that is funny. It just shows there are much interests on our projects. No one takes it seriously. As you see, all are doing well including Seo In-gook and Jung Eun-ji. All landed lead roles in shows in major stations. Do you think the word 'curse' is right in that case?"

Reply series received the top drama contents award during tvN10 awards ceremony. "Daesang? Frankly speaking, I expected it. Even though they are all reply series, they are also separate dramas. So I was happy they picked Reply 88 to give the award. Still all 'Reply' actors/actresses walked up to the stage, thanks to Sung Dong-il (who played dad). Even before the announcement, Sung said all Reply actors should go up to the stage. I was happy when all were standing onstage together. Personally I was most satisfied Sung Dong-il received the special acting award. And Hyeri and Eunji both congratulated him. That picture was nice." They all joined in the after party, which Sin suggested. "Even though they all were in Reply series, they were different shows. People didn't know each other, but they seemed to have good time without feeling awkward. I felt good seeing them all together. They all started and progressed same way. I thought the party wouldn't last long, but I heard they stayed until the morning having fun. I was shocked when Kim Sung-gyun(Reply 94 and 88) approached Eun Ji-won(Reply 97) with a glass saying "Hyung-nim, I am your fan." because it was such an unlikely picture."

One of show's attention-pulling plots was to find a husband. Especially with Reply 88, the viewers had a fierce shipping war and even the new word 'OeNamRyu' (Anyway husband is Ryu Joon-yeol) was born. "We cast actors who are attractive and fit to the character in the show, but there is no guarantee for success. So we always leave the option open. Like during Reply 94, if garbage was not charming, we would've had to change the husband. Taek and Jung-hwan both received the love, but we thought we could continue with 'Plan A' looking at Park Bo-gum. In episode 6, there was a scene Taek asks Duksun "Let's go to see a movie", where viewer response was very important because that was when Taek approached to women viewers as a man. And as you know that scene was Daebak, so we kept going with the scenario that Taek was husband."

Even so some fans were disappointed that Jung-hwan didn't get the girl. They felt betrayed because the show treated Jung-hwan like husband in the beginning. "All the characters had flaws. Sunwoo had no father, Taek had no mother, Duksun was poor. Jung-hwan was the only one who had all. All has own story and the lead of their own drama. If you see Jung-hwan as the hero of the show, it is a story of sad first love. If you see Taek as the hero of the show, it is story of growing up and having romance of an innocent child. Also, I think Ryu Joon-yeol is really some impressive actor. He portrayed Jung-hwan too charming. There was a scene in the beginning when all watched the TV where Duksun appeared as a picket girl, and Jung-hwan smiled for a second. It was very short moment, but people talked like the whole episode was about Jung-hwan. Some episodes were about family story or mom's story, but because of Jung-hwan's line and eye expression, people forgot about what they watched before."

He casted newbie or actors who were not known well but match to his/her character in the show. "Established actors/actresses have their charms shown many times in their various projects. If we wanted a person fitting to our character we created, it was better to cast a fresh face. I hear some mentioned like "I failed in Reply audition", but I hope they think it was a meeting to find if the actor fit to the character we created. It was not like their acting talent was lacking." About casting Park Bo-gum as Taek, he said "Actually we didn't intend to cast such a good looking actor. He was a character who only knew Baduk, and we imagined a person who was short, not good looking and gave out a little closed feel. But when we met Park, we changed our mind. I thought "What is wrong with a Baduk player being good looking?" And I was confident about making him less good looking, and his hair style was born with that thinking."

Park Bo-gum became A-class star after Reply 88 and Moonlight. "It would be lie if I say I've never thought I made him like that, but I am trying to forget that. I made a drama for my benefit, and cast effective actors in the process. Park Bo-gum just fit into that situation and did well. It is outcome of his own doing. Also if you think "I raised him", you will bound to feel hurt because you will think "He changed." some point of time. Regardless, I feel proud because they are my babies. And I wish Park Bogum stop contacting me. He said he finished 'Moonlight' well thanks to me, and keeps sending me texts thanking me. What the hell I got to do with Moonlight's success?"

He says he watches Reply 97 the most among three. "All three seasons were everything to me while we filmed. I can't say which one I loved the most. But the one I see the most often is 'Reply 97' because there are many parts that I made honestly with my unpolished ability and no crafty techniques. Whenever I want to see my idea that I had first time, I turn on Reply 97."
Even though there are expectations about next reply show, his next work will be something totally different.
"I am thinking about a show to air around next fall. It is not a story of family or romance. With the writer Lee in the center, I keep having meetings with writers who don't have experience in writing dramas." We are looking in the long range." The viewers have recommended the year for the next Reply drama. It includes 2002 when there was World Cup game, and 1980 which Reply 88 layed an underplot. "We are looking at various possibilities including 1980 and 2002. We also left it open for the years between. An alley neighborhood story was told in Reply 88, Boarding house culture was dealt in Reply 97, and the fandom culture was shown in Reply 97. It is important to find a story frame in certain period like that." He plans to continue Reply series after his next project. "They say the viewers who watched Reply 97 met their high school alumni, people contacted their college alumni after watching Reply 94, and people got their curiosity up about who were their neighbors after watching Reply 98. I hope Reply series stay as dramas bringing about such nice influence. It is not a project I can stop because I want because we have received so much love. Until the viewers say "No more please", I plan to continue."

Wasn't it sad casts from R94 were missing in the tvN awards ceremony when everyone else was there?

@fan thanks for sharing the interview with PD Sin. I can't wait for the next project. Without focusing much on the romance/husband hunt, Reply series are really good. The stories of family, friendship, growing up, and basically, living out one's youth are just wonderful.

Love the bit about Bogum. He will be forever grateful to PD Sin for paving the way for him to showcase his talents and be known. Boy is literally the talk of the town (and yes he'll be embarking on an insane Asia tour!) aside from the current political turmoils in SK. So proud of him.

Last one. Here is more of question and answer session with actor Ha Suk-jin who played a star instructor Jin Jung-suk in Drinking Solo. [OSEN, STAR NEWS] Ha debuted in an airline commercial in 2005, and gained an upright director image through projects like 'Childless comfort' or 'Thrice married woman' by acclaimed writer Kim Soo-hyun.
Q: Did you get any different response this time from your previous dramas?
A: With weekend dramas, you usually talk in terms of ratings, but now I hear it[DS] created buzz in internet communities and among younger audiences. I feel that my fan base got widened also.
Q: You have 'Brain-sexy man' and 'Cool Man' image.
A: 'Brain-sexy man' title is thankful. Even though it could create prejudice and limits on my acting activity, I think it is thankful title as a product to appeal to the public.

Q: You are very active in variety shows.(He did 'I alive alone' which shows single life and 'Problematic Men' which solves puzzles given.)
A: Actually I am shy and not so kind, but as I do 'Problematic Men', I think I learn how to change. Showing real Ha Suk-jin in variety shows can be helpful with my real occupation as an actor. When I was doing 'I live alone' program, I wanted to show real Ha Suk-sjin. Many entertainers try to cover themselves, but I didn't want that way. I didn't want to look cool. I didn't want to be another director-nim (like my role in dramas). Even thought I have been doing 'Problematic Men' for a while, doing variety is still scary. It is easy to cause misunderstanding and hard to decide if I have to cover/hide something or show all.

Q: Your character was un-cool in the beginning, but comical enough to gain love from viewers.
A: I also thought that when I pushed Min Jin-woong ssi's forehead in the elevator. Fortunately writer-nim made it funny. The time I dressed up and checked myself in the mirror (ep 9) was funny for me. My mother loved saying "I laughed the most among all the projects you have done so far." I wanted to do a comedy. Because the script was written so funny, I just mostly followed the script. I felt I was alive on the set. Currently airing '1% of anything' was filmed before, but the set (atmosphere) was really difficult. Compared to that, shooting atmosphere in Drinking Sole was really fun.

Q: Some say this is your life project.
A: I was confident to do well when I read the synopsis. I thought I could understand well about living contending with yourself regardless of what others think. Rather than thinking about ratings, I just thought about how I can make this character alive. Actually there are times I check my name in the internet out of curiosity. I have done 'Problematic Men' for a long time, but Taylor said he only saw me in the commercial. I have to give long explaination about me to the person like Taylor. I think after 'Drinking solo' there are less people who don't know me. When I read comments about me, I only see hateful comments (It catches my eyes more). I use it as a tool to fix when I do acting. Many times I make much effort to fix them. I don't feel wronged or have grudges. I just think whatever people like or dislike about me is all me. I am just thankful for the comments.

Q: There are many fans who want Season 2.
A: If they do S2, I think one of Jin Jung-suk or Park Ha-sun has to be eliminated. My mother asked if I do Season2, and I said I don't know. Mother said I should be out. Park Ha-na character has lots of story to unwind or be developed, but Jin character already achieved and has a lot.

Q: You must be really satisfied with Drinking solo.
A: I loved working site so much. Shooting itself was very fun. After the first broadcast, when I went to the set thinking to ask if we had good ratings, they all clapped. I thought if this drama was not going down in ratings, they'd keep shooting in this atmosphere. When we did the last shooting on 21st, Ha-sun was sobbing and asked me "Why oppa is not crying?", and I said "I've never cried in time like this."
In the beginning of drama shooting everyone got nervous. In the case of PD, we even said he was slave of viewership ratings. When I think about it now, I wish I made the ratings promise that I dress up like Jin Jung-suk and drink alone in somewhere nice without notice because I have never done it.

Q: Was it all fun?
A: No. There was a scene I was hit with a lobster and they did it with real one. Staff said sorry when I asked why soft form was not used for that. It was very heavy and felt like a weapon. I felt pain when I got hit. When I went to the beauty shop to change my hair style for following scenes, hair designer said "Hyung, you are bleeding."

Q:In the drama, you insisted for high quality and your ideal type was a tall model type.
A: I actually like a tall woman. While shooting I nagged Park Ha-sun ssi to arrange a meeting with a woman for me. "Ha-sun ah, when show ends, arrange a meeting with a women who graduated from Seoul Univ., who makes salary about 1/10 of mine, and has model style". She said "Go away". But as I got older, I like a person whom I can communicate with. I'd like to meet a woman who can make me not to check my cel while we are together.

Q: The kiss scene with Park Ha-sun with her on your shoulder was unique.
A: That pose was only possible because Park Ha-sun ssi was thin. She is shy and not the type who can make a friend easily. She still uses informal speech to me. I talk down to her, so Park Ha-sun ssi says I feel like a real boss like Jin Jung-suk character. She is not like her character in the show at all. Jin-woong is same way. Oh, Hwangwoo Seul-hye ssi is just like her character (Hwang Jin-yi) in real person.

Q:How was Gong Myung who played your younger brother? What would you do if you are really tangled in love triangle?
A: Gong Myung is 12 years younger than me, and he felt like my real brother when we went out for meal. We were like real bickering brothers, so I felt real and nice. We had good chemistry. [With same love interest] I am not sure about siblings, but I think I will step back if he is my friend. I don't want to spoil my friendship because of a woman. It will be like Ki-bum's choice.

Q: Are you similar to Jin Jung-suk in real life?
A: Living contending with myself is similar, I think. I have this confidence which I don't know where it comes from. I have optimistic view that everything will work out well. As an actor, people seem to want me to become a top actor. They say "Why you are not popular like a halyu star?" but I want to ask back "Why should I?" I live working hard right now and am on right path, and keep working in various genres- those are worthwhile, I think.

Q: You majored in Engineering in college. How did you become an actor?
A: It has not been long since I thought acting was my path. Like until 2010 I just thought acting was a tool to make money. I became an actor by accident. My friend from middle school got a job in a new entertainment agency, and they needed actors. So he recommended me. I didn't even watch much TV then, and I've never thought I got some entertainer thing in my blood. And even after I became an actor, whenever I made money and had time, I just went to PC room playing soccer game. I lived like that for 5-6 years. In winter of 2010, I played the male lead in tvN's drama 'Once upon a time in Sangchori', and it was really cold. After the show, I took a trip for a month, thinking I worked hard and deserved a reward. I thought a lot during that time. My conclusion was "I should work hard".

Q: How is actor Ha Suk-jin? What is Ha Suk-jin's unique point as an actor in his 30's?
A: I have worked without taking a break. Now I have experience, but this occupation changes over to an artist from a technician at some point. Can I do it? Thinking that makes me feel lost. As I got older, I became to compare myself to people in my age group who found careers of their lives and working for settled life. Currently I live 'hand-to-mouth'. Even though it has been more than 10 years since I debuted, I have to do well to be able to get next project. With My occupation, you can only work when someone asks for you. I wonder if I am a man who deserves that. Before 30, I used to think I could leave the set when I didn't make NG, but now I work to make a character people can feel relatable. My goal is to keep working without causing trouble as an adult man. For the acting, I wonder how far I can go-like if I get to act a gloomy role, I wonder if I can get into character ruining my health like Kim Myung-min sunbae-nim.

I don't know if I have my own unique point. I should show in my acting. There are many interesting dramas these days. As I watch young guys acting, I think if I did the acting like them when I was at their age, I would have done better now. Also when I watch actors in my age, I'm amazed how deliciously they deliver their lines. [For next project] I plan to have a break during winter. I feel like shooting in winter makes a fake to endure the cold weather. There was time I was pretending I was not cold wearing thin jumper when I was actually freezing. I don't want to do that this winter. Oh, I think I will continue 'Problematic Men' because there is heater there.

Maybe Ha Suk-jin had difficulties on the set of 1% because script was not fun, and there were no Gong-myung and fun characters like Drinking Solo? Or could it be tvN's atmosphere? Yay for tvN!

I don't know what bothered him during 1% filming but it turned out so well but it could be the fact he and JSM are in 70-80% of screen time each episode which has to damn tiring to film. I hope I get to see both him and JSM in some future projects together.

@Gem

I think he was referring to all those crazy suits that he had to wear.

Joke aside, 1% seemed to be made on a small budget and like you said he and JSM were in most of the scenes. Perhaps these made the filming 'difficult'.

I loved reading ALL these interviews. Thank you, fan!

There are a lot of outdoor scenes in summer weather where they try hard not to look like they are uncomfortably hot and perspiring.
His comments about not wanting to film during the winter because he doesn't like to freeze reminds me of the dramas I have seen where you can see the breath of actors while they said their lines during indoor scenes (!).

I'm Song Yoon Ah's trash nowadays. Lol. This is due to her excellence acting in K2 made me even want to buy her lipstick that showed in last week's episode.?? We all want to age graciously like her though.

I just started Trot Lovers after KIV it before. I don't know if I love the casts more than the plot or otherwise. But I really love Eun Ji ? This girl is the best idol turn to actress. She acts naturally when it comes to romcom. Hope one day she can act with Jo Jung Suk in romçom. How awesome it will be, right.? Shin Sung Rok also should consider to act in more romçom because he is cute and weird in TL??

Just watch A Stranger In Our House and it will all become clear ...... the male lead makes dumplings in a restaurant and he often says, " I need to knead dough."

But I think the viewers are starting to see that the phrase has either different meanings and/or functions.

Give it a watch and see what you think.
