Happy Friday Beanies!
Found this competition in Seoul called To Space Out where people compete do absolutely nothing! Finally I've found a sport I could excel at. ? Too funny not to share. The photos of the competitors spaced out faces are hilarious.

http://www.lostateminor.com/2016/06/28/doing-absolutely-nothing-is-now-a-competitive-sport-in-south-korea/

Watching the same stuff still, BGS, Doctors, Beautiful mind, Police unit 38, Hapi Mari (Jdrama).
BGS with DT and GS is my guilty pleasure every week and I'm going to miss them when it's over.

Do you guys have shows which you adore but can't explain why? The plot is typical, acting not stellar, but yet you have rewatched more than once? And when people ask for drama recommendations, you don't really want to bring it up because you can't quite explain it without sounding silly/superficial (I know the plot/acting sucks but... Oppa is cute!)

Down with Love (Taiwanese drama) is one of mine- I really can't explain it because Jerry Yan's acting leaves so much to be desired, but I adored him and Ella so much.

So Beanies which shows are your guilty pleasures?

Um mine would be Secret Message only because I watch it solely for T.O.P. and his singing. Like if you asked me to describe the drama all I could say is its a Line ad where TOP sings. There might be more to it, but I can't say. I love it tho. Home sick today so probably gonna re-watch right now!

For me its Falling for innocence. A very cliched plot but the humor does the deal for me. And i still watch a few scenes again. I won't recommend it to someone because the story isnt so special but the humor and JKH's acting is gold.

My all time favorite scene was when the heroine breaks up with the hero, he stops random strangers on the road and warns them not to fall in love. JKH killed it in that scene!

That is the scene I re-watch on rainy days.
"Although joy may pass. SADNESS WILL NEVER PASS!"
Kills me every time.

When is Jung Kyungho coming back to dramaland? He is hands down my favourite comedy actor (I also like him in serious roles too).

I guess everyone loves that scene. It was the best, the entire breakup scene was amazing and funny. Though the show was described as melo it was a rom com and it was great in the aspect that the writer made sure that even in the sad scenes they would insert humour. I wish more rom coms have this good humour.

I only have a few dramas that I re-watched, even though there are many that I want to re-watch, but who has time when there are new ones keep coming. The drama I watched more than once is IYSS, Heo Joon (original), Dae Jang-geum, DaMo (third time for these was as good as the first time). And recent ones were You from another star, and Sly and Single again (they were not so good second time tho)

Yep, I'll second that, I don't watching it a second time. I also watched it because of CEO JSW, his childish tantrums when jealous was quite funny, well SKJ (Baek in-ho in CITT) is a bonus, he has quite a lot of screen time in it too.

Mine is Love Rain, I've re-watched it 3 to 4 times, each time I thought I would only re-watch snippets of it but ended up watching episode after episode. I'm not a die-hard fan of JGS, I did not remember anything much about Pretty Man, and did not even watch Jackpot, but I love the way he acted and carried himself in this drama. Probably it is also due to Love Rain's director Yoon Seok-ho and screen writer screenwriter Oh Soo-yeon, I also loved their Endless Love series from a decade ago (i.e. Winter Love Song and Autumn in My Heart).

Hi Michykdrama, if you have a soft spot for JGS, I would suggest you check out Mary Stayed Out All Night too. He has that same flamboyant bad guy demeanor in You’re Beautiful, MSOAN and LR. I love LR because of the overall nostalgic mood and the romantic scenes sprinkled with lighthearted humor. His interaction with Yoona is very cute (not as their parents, but as grown-up children, from ep5 onwards). If you don't mind the makjang about sacrificing love for parents’ sake, it is worth watching. Among JGS’s dramas, I like this character most in LR as a sophisticated and flirtatious fashion photographer, even more than moody Tae-kyung in You’re Beautiful.

JGS is good in LR. My eonnie suggested I skip the first 4 eps as I was complaining about the past background. I decided not to. I should have listened. Probably would have liked it more.

I second Mary StayedOut All Night. MGY is adorable in it.

Me Too! I love Love rain. It didn't do well ratings wise, but I love the second generation and the angst! Such sweet angst.

But sadly, after watching Sassy Go Go, where the entire plot of love rain (parents of the hero and heroine fall in love) was condensed into a 1 hour episode and resolved very quickly and cleanly, love rain did lose its charm a bit.

Required fields are marked *

It's Love Rain for me too, it's such a melo but I really enjoyed the fun parts of the present-day portions. Also it didn't hurt that Jang Geun-seok and Yoona had great chemistry even if Yoona's acting wasn't perfect, it was good enough.

“Click Your Heart” is a high school romance drama for the teen audience...
but
you can choose the male lead for your heroine,
it's like the drama of otome game,
you have several routes you can choose and the girl will follow that rule,
you can have episode 1,4,7 or 1,2,4 0r 1,3,7 depends on the choice and the story depends on the guy,
it's a nice short drama

I watched FAITH 4 times all the way through. Read all the recaps here, and every comment, too... mainly because the exposition drove me nuts. The music was the totally cracktastic part for me... And I loved the animation for the Woodalchi backstory. Ryu Deok-Hwan's turn as King Gong-Min was the most memorable performance for me, closely followed by Kim Mi-Kyung as Court lady Choi. Memorable scenes: Choi Young's mission through the gateway to find a doctor; The Strategic Kiss; the final scene at The Tree; the Queen's interview with the royal eunuch re: marital bliss -- from which she runs away screaming, and the later scene when he realizes she's about to implement it... [Actor Kwon Min played Oh Hae Young's team leader Kim Sung-Jin].

Even I couldnot find eng sub complete version, watched it long back..some scenes are english subbed.. so ya..i too want a full english subbed version.. :(

Good news or stale news or no news .. i dunno :)

Taiwan was making another version..launching in 2017 :D

So, my entry to kdrama was 3 dramas simultaneously - coffee prince, king2hearts and playful kiss (which btw took me to BoF)..

i don't think i can pick a fav..except for 1996 version, I can watch any darn version any number of times.. (discounting 1996 - ariel was the most annoying but eventually grows on me.. the only dissapointing kotoko was the korean one.. i was fine with KHJ's portrayal)

i even started learing tennis because of it.. don't ask why :(

I'm with you about "Down With Love".
Whenever I feel down or bored and need to rewatch a show, it's usually some (not all) episodes of "Down With Love" , or of "Just You" (I didn't like much the last episodes).

I didn't quite like "Murphy Law of Love" as much.

Btw - I watched the first two episodes of "Hapi Mari". I can't believe the dad seem to care more about gambling and money than his daughter well being :( People comment about how fast JH is in "Doctors": I found the end of episode 2 of "Hapi Mari" to be even quicker! I love DWL too for some reason! I live plucky Ella, and Jerry Yan's non-stalker acting fits his character. That drama always makes me smile. I also watch The Rose constantly and I have a hard time just explaining the plot to other people let alone why I love it so much. Ella, Joe Chen, and pretty much everyone else is really good. That drama reminds me of an onion where I seem to find another layer of things to ponder no matter how many times I watch it. I also need to give Oh! My Lady an honorable mention as it has my favorite plucky main character, comedy, and eye candy! Who needs a compelling plot? ?

Yay! Found someone who loves hapi mari..its my new j drama addiction right now...

I feel like I'm watching an insane amount of dramas doctors, BM, LR,UF, S38,BGS... almost 2 episodes a day for the whole week..

I also saw good morning call.. I read managa ages ago... like the live action but story has nothing new and has typical leads.. so want something light go for it..

I also saw personal taste ..man it felt like someone shot the whole jeju scenes on handicam.. that's some sloppy directing... on the bright side I found hope for LMH in rom-coms (sorry not a fan of both heirs or BOF).. its refreshing to see him not as chebol jerk... but I hated the female most it crossed the line when she forgot her monthly important dates and making LMH by sanitary... (you loose some serious points for that) I was actually shocked how lightly they took the gay part but LMH's best is always city hunter for me...

I really like this question! Michykdrama, I especially love your phrase "And when people ask for drama recommendations, you don't really want to bring it up..." ooof, I have so many of those, the shows that require so many qualifiers along with the reccomendations so that people don't think you've lost your mind.

My guilty multi-watch love is SNOW QUEEN. Hyun Bin beautiful and young, Sung Yuri doing a good job for the first time, Im Joo Hwan being his cool self, Yoo In Young in her first role - swoony, melo, tear jerking, even funny with a fantastic OST.

Hey Michykdrama! I'm always late to OT but maybe you could pose this question another time: what drama do we love and just not understand why nobody else gets it? ?SNOW QUEEN totally falls in that category for me.

And the ones I rewatched like You're Beautiful, DWL, Just You were so fluffy and all, I didn't really want to admit to it or dare recommend it. Hahaha. Thought I had to pretend to have deep philosophical reasons to like a show. ?
I'm so happy I'm not alone in this feeling. Heh!

Hi all I haven't stepped into OT for a couple of years. But I wanted to ask something. Is it me or just me being sensitive that we seemed to have more trolls and rabid fan girls on DB and ockoala?

I can't even comment because I don't trust them to even wrife a logical reason why they defend their bias without it reducing to name calling and bashing. Even soompi is the same. Some of the illogical blind tunnel vision comments defies understanding.

On this note writing that Beautiful Mind is a scary drama. I can't understand the naive police woman and LYO who is supposedly antisocial personality and doesn't feel emotions. But feels grandiose illusions about himself. Then craves approval from his dad. Isn't it contrary to what his character supposed to be? Someone who doesn't feel emotions.

There. Vent out time to head to bed. This weekend girding my loins to watch General Hospital 2 episode 1 and 2 for someone. To check the medical terminology. I swear going from BM to watching campy GH 2 is pure torture. None of you have watched it right?

0

Required fields are marked *

Yes to crazy fans. I was a bit taken aback recently and realise certain actors/actresses have very passionate supporters and detractors. Put the 2 together and it's like a nuclear reaction.

I'm quite happy that the Beautiful Mind and BGS discussion here doesn't seem to have this problem.

Is General Hospital good? I usually don't watch medical dramas because usually I end up rolling my eyes at how unrealistic it is unless there is something else to keep my attention.

Required fields are marked *

GH2 must be how hospital dramas used to be. I went to episode 17 to see the ending. It is all about residents maturing and some romanxe. but heck if I can get into pretentious dramas and campy behaviours. A lot of actors I recognised are there though. Who are more famous now.

Medical dramas have improved I think. I remembered working on Brain the drama years ago. I was cursing a blue streak but nowadays subbers are more used to medical terminology and there is actually a spreadsheet of the terms used in the last few dramas. What irks me is the fact that writers seem to think that suturing is what makes a good surgeon. The female lead was shown tieing knots on the bus seat railings. And which other drama lately- darn was it GH2 had the senior consultant stitching his hospital blanket and pillows. Even JH was admiring PSH's character closing up stitches. I was thinking to myself " hello it's called staples. What the heck are you stitching up for?" It is almost an inside joke to myself that I end up reading the lastest journal article or trend when researching some new fangled procedure on a medical drama. They do wild and obscure stuff. Doctors is a romance masquerading as a medical drama. There were hardly any medical worthy scenes or techically difficult stuff. BM on the other hand is both a thriller and a medical drama. He's scary. The doctors there are scary. Eep sends me shivers reading about the potassium injection.

Anyway... back to the Sat reality. Happy hanging out on OT. I have to write some Korean notes to someone today. It's embarrassing how many people have seen my bad handwriting.

0
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

Lol. Actually the knot tying stuff does exist. I have seen neurosurgery and general surgery friends practice knot tying all over the place. Ok, so maybe not the suturing, because that's a bit stupid since a piece of cloth is totally different from a piece of human flesh, and sewing well does not equal a good surgeon. Haha.
Are you in the medical line in real life? Is that why you are helping to review medical terms?

0
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

It's called a lab and doing it on a piece of pork skin. I don't sew in real life and can't even get knot to lie flat against the cloth. Suturing is different. That's technical teaching. Tie the correct number of knots, the correct suture, size and distance and it's fine. People don't get it. Like I said.... staples for the head. I haven't seen anyone practice at work maybe when they are students. And yes I passed my stitching oops suturing module.

I couldn't stand the actress in Brain. And she was in the other one where she was oldest of 5 siblings etc.

I actually like the child actors in almost all dramas. They are so good I am in awe. I was traumatised young JH was watching his parents resuscitated. Even a child actor would be having nightmares.

I think it depends on the actor involved.
The more popular they are, the bigger their coverage and the more impactful their news.
Unfortunately not all commenters have the same thought on the troll comment.

Sometimes (maybe just me), some critique left cold, unresponsive, called troll and unanswered that resulting in heated comment afterward.

Imo db is probably the most civil site out there compared to others about k-entertainment, it's just certain hallyu stars that attract the crazy fangirls and trolls (and I've learned to stay away from those comment sections) whereas on koala almost every article is tainted with them and commenters are overall a lot more insensitive and drop swear words straight away.

I am glad DB is having some control over the comments section, for there seems to be a gradual influx of nasty comments!

But honestly, what has happened to sensible, rational behaviour? Etiquette is not something you only follow in formal dinners, afternoon tea parties or business gatherings-it also should be followed in this new-age cyberspace-should it not (or am I being an old fogie)?

I know right? I don't even post these days cos ' it's not safe. Lol. Even in the virtual world. But yes I notice koala is getting so out of control I almost stopped reading the comments. It makes me sad though because fans know lots of tidbits ( which I don't bother scouring for ) but it's not worth reading the thrash to get to it.

DB is definitely way more civilised which is the reason why I enjoy reading the comments. Even on the dramas I don't watch.

@Ck1Oz,

DB is definitely way more civilised which is the reason why I enjoy reading the comments. Even on the dramas I don’t watch.

That goes for me, too. The signal-to-noise ratio is high, and the discourse nearly always courteous. I enjoy reading thought-provoking, well-reasoned and -written posts containing words with more than four letters... When I write long-windedly, it's because I used to teach ESL, and try to be clear and precise so as to avoid misunderstandings. Please pardon my antique American slang. ;-)

Ditto for the shows I'm not watching... I've gotten so many hot tips here at DB, and have ventured out of my sageuk zone of preference to enjoy a bunch of modern-day rom-coms and thrillers. Thanks, Beanies, for turning me on to so many great Kdramas and films. ;-)

@anugp61,

But honestly, what has happened to sensible, rational behaviour? Etiquette is not something you only follow in formal dinners, afternoon tea parties or business gatherings-it also should be followed in this new-age cyberspace-should it not (or am I being an old fogie)?

Sad to say, I think the decline and fall of netiquette reflects the general decline in social discourse in real life... This is a situation that has been bemoaned for millennia.

I'm not saying you're a fogey by any means... I'm more of a dinosaur myself. And very pleased to know that I'm not alone in my desire for meaningful discussion minus the cussin'. ;-)

Yes to your last comment! Personally I think people use "freedom of speech" as a poor excuse to be rude and nasty, and for some reason it's all over the Internet.
My general rule is, if you wouldn't say it face-to-face to someone, you shouldn't be saying it to them on the Internet as well! Things get so misunderstood because people can't be bothered to explain themselves properly, and jump to negative conclusions and accusations at the drop of a hat.

As for the troll and rabids, I leave them be and laugh at my screen.

I was thinking he must be developing some sort of emotions. He apparently does have some if he needs approval. My thinking is that he may be slightly misdiagnosed or he may just not feel things as deeply.

Having anti-social disorder doesnt mean that you cannot feel emotions, you just cannot understand other people's emotions.

@Purple Owl,

I got off my duff this morning and watched the first two episodes of BEAUTIFUL MIND... and was instantly hooked. It took off like a bronco out of the chute, and didn't let up.

I've been a sucker for Jang Hyuk since watching my first flick with him in it -- I think it was DAEMANG / GREAT AMBITION -- and then CHUNO, followed by a couple of movies and eventually FATED TO LOVE YOU and SHINE OR GO CRAZY.

Medical dramas aren't really my thing, and the Chaebol Malaise of YONG-PAL undercut what started out as a dashing action drama.

I've never watched the American soap opera GENERAL HOSPITAL the way one of my friends has years if not decades... But JH is in this show, along with Lee Jae-Ryong, who was fantastic as King Muryeong in THE KING'S DAUGHTER, SU BAEK-HYANG. Oooo, and there's Jo Jae-Wan who was in DAEMANG, and Queen Nogoog from FAITH... and Yebang from ARANG. I'm tickled with the cast members I'm already acquainted with, and hope to meet more good actors/actresses who don't normally perform sageuk roles.

Cheers!

Finished watching Dear My Friends, its slice of life has sliced my heart real deep, indeed it’s a drama produced with lots of sincerity. It lays bare the raw emotions and life’s struggles while at the same time, giving a glimmer of hope with the message to live life with intensity and pride in the face of old age, illness and demise. Kudos to Noh Hee-kyung and the veteran actors for a great drama which touches our hearts.

As for Doctors, I’m just watching half-heartedly as it is starting to feel out of whack. Kim Rae-won seems quite clumsy in his portrayal of Ji-hong. He is a teacher who fell in love with his teenage student in an awkward manner. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not about to condemn teacher-student relationship, I think it can turn into a nurturing kind of love, as in J-movie, A Short Distance Relationship. Tomohisa Yamashita seemed to be quite sleek in that kind of a role, whereas KRW looked uncomfortable. Probably it was due to the cheesy conversations, for instance, while alighting from a helicopter on the rooftop (again after DotS ?), he said to Hye-jung, “Are you married? Do you have a boyfriend”, and when she replied “No” to both questions, he said, “We are set”. For goodness sake, those two have neither contacted nor seen each other for 13 long years, and at the time when they parted, they were embroiled in a scandal, and neither had explicitly expressed any real feelings for the other. Is it logical for the teacher to say these to his ex-student after a 13 year time gap? This is extremity of the word frivolity! This was followed by the cheesy ring fighting scene with lots of skinship and the awkward telephone booth kissing scene, with Ji-Hong saying something like “I’m going to give you what a man gives to a woman”. What kind of dialogue is that? In comparison, the interaction between Hye-jung and Yoon-do seems more naturally.

I was watching Uncontrollably Fond now, the first 15 minutes gave quite a good vibe, I think I’ll continue watching it. I'm looking forward to final weekend of Beautiful Gongshim, cute and quirky DT & GS, they make an awesome pair, I will sure miss them after the show ends.

I’ve caught the fervor of Moon Lovers: Scalet Heart Ryeo from fellow LJK fans. So to make myself prepared for it, I’m attempting to do something I’ve not done for over 10 long years, i.e. watching a Cdrama. Yes, I’ve decided to shove BBJX down my throat though I don’t like to watch Chinese production, especially Qing dynasty period drama with that shaved head ponytail hairstyle, doesn’t matter that it is Nicky Wu or whoever. It has 35 episodes, I hope I can put up with it…

Have a nice weekend all!

I enjoyed BBJX. I got used to that hairstyle. Hope you like it in the end. I agree with you on Dear My friends (great drama) and Doctors. I also feel Kim Rae-won looks awkward doing some cheesy scenes.
And I will miss Gongshim also -they were such a cute couple. Namgoong Min was not joking when he said he could change his image through his next project in the interview after Smelly girl (lol).

Hi fan, yes, I need encouragement to take on BBJX, there is a great inertia to overcome, even to sit down and start watching the 1st ep is a bit tough, this is no exaggeration. I can understand even without sub, but not sure if this is a good thing, the accent and intonation can make me wince, just as an example, it is like a Brit watching a Scottish movie or vice versa. However, I do not have any issue with Kdrama/Jdrama, though I don't understand anything much, the spoken language is easy on the ears. But I will sit through it for the sake of Jun Ki :), if I know the story of BBJX beforehand, it will be more interesting if I watch MLSHR later on.

I like NGM after watching Can You Hear My Heart, that's the reason why I'm watching BGS. I've not watched Smelly girl yet (more so now, as there is good reason for me to refrain from watching). I started watching One Fine Day a while ago but lost the momentum to continue watching, he was so young then! I also like him in Wild Chives & Soybean Soup, and I will probably watch Remember next.

btw, thanks so much for your conscientious translations of the interviews, that is a lot of great effort!

Hi Sancheezy, who's cringy CGI?

lol, at least you know what I mean here! I'm of chinese descent, so though I understand Mandarin, I find it hard to get used to the way they speak it in Taiwan which is quite cheesy with a slow drawl, and in certain parts of china, it is so shrill and piercing to the ears to the point of being uncomfortable. Also, I grew up watching cantonese shows from HK not because I enjoyed them but because everybody else was watching them, just like the generation in Reply 1988 who went gaga over Chow Yun-fat's A Better Tomorrow. I think generally, they tend to glorify men and their bromance in those mafia movies The Godfather style which treat women like objects, you will know what I mean if you have watched any of Jackie Chan's movie. So I tend to void watching chinese production if I can due to my preconceived bias.

0

@Pebble
BBJX used cringy CGI (not a lot, but it's really obvious) , it makes you wonder why they didn't just find the place to film it without CGI, but then Idk the story at that time,,,, maybe the budget

I grew up watching Bruce Lee, Jet Lee, and Jackie Chan, my dad loves it, I think that movies make me fall in love with Martial Art.
I've been practicing Karate since 3rd grade and I really appreciate those movies for their martial art style.

ps: this karate lesson actually makes me quite judgmental to a lot of fighting scene, especially including the female character since we fight a lot in Dojo and with a variety of style , including free-street-style..(lol)
I prefer not to give any comment about that topic since it feels like it would have killed the joy of the other commenter who loved their "badass" heroine,

0

oic, CIG refers to computer generated graphics, lol, not some nasty character in BBJX, lol.

Yep, I've to admit the kungfu is good in those Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan and Jet Li movies. I remember I was very impressed by Jet Li when I watched the very first movie of the Once Upon A Time In China series, oh, that was a very long time ago. If your dad enjoys chinese martial arts movies, you may want to download those Donnie Yen's Ip Man series for him (the legendary Ip Man is the teacher of Bruce Lee), the martial arts choreography seems quite impressive in Ip Man too.

It's good that you practice karate, that is very good self-defence. This means you would find PSH's martial art moves in Doctors quite laughable right??

Actually, I still do not have confidence that I'm able to sit through all 35 eps of BBJX.. I guess reading the original novel is easier for me. Though I was not hopeful as there is only a very small collection of foreign language books here, I still checked the library catalogue this morning just in case. Woohoo! I was very surprised that one of the libraries here have the original BBJX books, so I quickly drove there to pick them up. I'm really going to great lengths just to be able to appreciate LJK's acting in MLSHR more, lol, stupid me in fan-girling mode. :)

btw, if you love Blue Spring Ride, you may want to check out kimi ni todoke, it is also a slow paced high school movie of the similar vibe,

0

Ooh now I'm wanting to check out that J movie you mentioned.
A movie is perfect to spend my time while I wait for the next episodes of BGS which are coming soon!
Oh btw I think there are another 4 episodes of BGS so that's 2 weekends more (this weekend and the next) of happy DT/GS shenanigans! ?

I marathoned the first six episodes of Doctors this week and I'm having the same problem. I think I read that this show was supposed to be a thoughtful, character driven drama, but the writing is not giving off that impression. I don't understand the characters and, worse than that, I don't believe them. I realizing while writing this comment that I haven't even bothered to remember their names yet.

KRW's cheerfulness reads false for some reason. I don't understand PSH's character development or her personality at all really. She's a gangster the first episode, but one incident and her personality does a total 180. And Baek In-ha's (sorry, I can't remember her real name) motivations are basically nonexistent for me. She's just cruel and delusional.

On top of that, I find the background music distracting.

Agree, I was quite disappointed as I have great expectation of KRW's acting. The love between KRW and PSH does not have that kind of depth yet, so it felt like KRW was faking it, his cheerfulness made him looked more like a frivolous and seasoned player when he said those cheesy stuff to PSH. It didn't feel right, he felt so superficial when he should be sensible and a level-headed teacher whom PSH could look up to,

I feel the same way about KRW's acting in Doctors. I think he is definitely capable of good acting, quite evident from his performance in Punch and Gangnam Blues, but I just think maybe he's more suitable for the grittier roles. The dialogues feel unnatural to me and perhaps he feels the same way too, that's why he couldn't really get into his character. I think most of the problem lies with the script.

The character I find most unbelievable is Jung Yoon Do, the second doctor. He started off as this really stern, arrogant jerk and by the next ep. he's meek and wimpy. How can someone change that fast? The progression just felt unnatural. I was hoping for more eps where PSH's character would show her smarts and outwit Yoon Do. Where can the story go for the next 10+ eps. when there's no tension left?

Probably it'll go in the direction of PSH vs Baek In-ha (what's her name in this drama?) because PSH will bring his dad's downfall by revealing his malpractice. Like Lolabeans, their names just do not stick, I even had to refer to wiki to get their names right when writing the comment above, lol

I am liking it..

CInematography is good
it seems story wise it is a decent melo..

I hope directing delivers..
Acting is not an hindrance (suzy was in e1 but not in ep2 so hoping she won't be an issue.. KWB is also decent..not a fine wine..but decent)

Actually in midst of all thrillers and romcoms, this is the only melo i find..infact since 2013 this is the only one i have noticed..so excited..

What i really find interesting is.. on most of the days.. within the same time slot/or the dramas on watchlist.. are so distinguished and different from each other in terms of genre, story, treatment.. that its a creative paradise and artistic treat for the eyes..

Hope this doesn't discourage certain genres because of low ratings (rom com will always prevail)

Hello, beanies. I posted this on a recent post way too late
(http://www.dramabeans.com/2016/07/lee-hee-joon-joins-lee-min-ho-as-a-con-artist-for-legend-of-the-blue-sea/), so I am reposting it again here. I had a good laugh penning this, and I hope you'll like it. Keep singing!

LMH, bare-chested, clad in nothing but a fishtail,
Jun-pyoish ringlets cascading wildly over his broad shoulders and down his ripped back, sings his heart out in the tub, upon learning that he will not be a mermaid in his next role after all...

Look at this tail, isn’t it sleek,
Toiled long nights to make it complete,
Wouldn’t you think I’m the guy,
The guy who’s lost everything?

Look at this face, isn’t it sad,
Wanted to be a pretty mermaid,
Looking at me now, you’d think
Sure, he’s lost everything

I got my abzmos all pumped up and ready
I got all numb making a fishtail this long
You wanna see my fingers?
They’re all bendy
But who cares? No big deal. Coz there’s more

I got all sweaty to get in this tail
Butt couldn’t fit, so did some punchin’
Shovin’ down hard on those
Whaddya call ‘em? Oh, cheeks

Zippin’ my tail, I don’t get too far
Danglin’ down the edge of the bathtub
Then slidin’ along down the
What’s that word again? Sink

I don’t know when, I don’t know how
But I know this sink’s shakin’ like crazy right now
Out of the sink, wish I could be
Part of your world

Happy Friday! How did you like new episodes of 'Uncontrollably Fond'?
'Uncontrollably Fond' had the press conference this week. The show drew much hype because of writer Lee Kyung-hee, and Suzy(Gu family book) and Kim Woo-bin(Heirs)'s casting. [The fact, Xsports news, Sports Seoul] UF finished filming on April and it is to broadcast in 11 countries including Korea and China.

About the drama, PD Park said "The writer Lee said she wanted to add 4 seasons to the emotion of Love. Spring's flutter, Summer's passion, Fall's fruition, Winter's loss and separation -all those feelings are portrayed in one project to build up consolation and healing. The thing I felt doing the pre-production is that writer was portraying this fundamental idea with actors to the end. Most of all I thought she wrote the fun melo. To summarize the whole story I can say it consists of Love sentiment's 4 seasons.

About the reason picking this project, Suzy said "I decided after I read synopsis. Just by looking at synopsis, the essential love story the writer wants to convey was clear. Noh Eul character felt lovely and charming, and even though I felt sad about her compromising with the reality I could relate to her." Kim Woo-bin said "I watched lots of the writer's projects when I was young. When I received the synopsis, I already decided. And I met PD Park Hyun-suk once when I debuted in 'White Christmas'. I thought working with PD Park was even better. There was ending scene described in the synopsis, which ingrained in me. I felt I had to do this project."

About doing a pre-production show, Suzy said "It was first time to work on a pre-production show and I liked there was enough time. We still did the shooting with tight schedule, but I had time to read the script, sleep a little more and take care of skin- which I liked.
KWB said "Since it is pre-production, we had more time so I expect the show has higher quality. For example, whenever we have 5 (scrap) scripts out, we gathered together to do the script read, which we called 'Strategy meeting', where we talked to the writer if there were some emotion we could not understand and writer and PD explained."

About their partners, Suzy said "I felt awkward at first. He/KWB prepared harder than anyone and act thoroughly, and watching him like that I thought he has many things to learn from. He was very considerate on the set. and I liked it because he made me feel at ease working together." Kim Woo-bin said "Suzy ssi has unique bright energy. Actually she was more considerate. On her shooting days, staffs and I were also smiling. She is an actress who has so much to give, and who can do deep acting so I learned a lot."
In previous work 'Heirs', Kim had crush over female lead, and in 'School-2013', he showed bromance with Lee Jong-suk. "When I was acting one-sided love, I had mindset I was shooting a melo even though it was just me. Finally I was able to show the melo here, so personally I was very excited. And even more so because that person was Suzy."

Also about each other's dates Sin Min-ah and Lee Min-ho, Kim said "Whenever there was a new teaser, she/SMA cheered me on. She has high expectation about drama too. I know Lee Min-ho ssi also and he cheers for us." About MBC's W where his BF Lee Jong-suk plays and probably competes for ratings, "I contact Jong-suk often, I even did texting this morning. I said I was going to the press conference and very nervous. Jong-suk said their drama-shooting was going well. He said jokingly 'W production team is shouting for 'Beat Uncontrollably Fond!'. I feel very honored to have a friend playing in the same time slot because it does not happen often, and we are cheering each other on."

Second leads are Im Joo-hwan(Oh my ghostess) and Im Joo-eun (Heirs). About Choi Ji-tae character he plays, IJH said, "The viewers might think him as the third wheel for Kim Woo-bin and Suzy character, but it is his way of showing love. My role is how to express that well." About Yoon Jung-eun character IJE plays, she said "Because there were situations and emotions when two characters met, I had some difficulty expressing it. Jung-eun is person who is thirst for love, so I try to be true to that feeling. I hope the viewers watch her personality, rather than her being annoying by getting in the way for leads' romance.

Personally I don't have much expectation because this is melo (I have to admit tho, I looooved 'Sangdoo Let's go to school'- Rain!!). And I wonder if second leads will outshine main leads in acting. Im Joo-hwan is certainly my bias, and I remember how people love Im Joo-eun.

I am still upset when I think Suzy got the grand actor award (for Gu Family book) over Go Hyun-jung (and Kim He-soo, right?) a few years ago (and Suzy was so shocked herself that she even thanked her dog). I still don't know WTH happened that time - Does anyone know?

Then again, I had bias against Jin Se-yeon but I like her more watching 'Flower in Prison'. So I have hopes for Suzy (so far nope).

I dropped Doctors. Now currently watching

Lucky romance - the show without a plot but an absolute smashing male lead

Beautiful Mind - I still haven't understood what exactly is his disorder, and some of it is messy but its still so so so good. This is my current obsession

Uncontrollably Fond - I'm differing from the majority opinion. I actually liked the 1st episode alot. The 2nd not so much. But fingers crossed bec ... KWB!

SFD - Totally justified hype till now. But i can't seem to marathon thru it. I need to take it in small doses and the names keep tripping me up bec there are so many characters

Shows i'm looking fwd to -> W, Scarlet Heart (why so far when you have finished shooting? Why ?)

The IT Crow - Nerdy fun all around
Marriage Not Dating - Funny all around with a good set of female/male characters.
One More Happy Ending - Main couple is all things...
Best Love (greatest Love) - this one is older but it's just plain fun
Emergency Couple - not super awesome but fun in its own way and I actor is hot
Heart to Heart - fun and Tae Jin's actor is in this
High School King of Savvy - SIG...god bless. Show is uneven but it's fun breezy watch.
Let's Eat 2 - Food Porn with the main actress from OHYA. Fluffy and fun.

I wish I could find you lighter fare that wasn't multi season but in general comedies/dramedies tend to work over a few seasons. If you find yourself in the mood for horror or fantasy sci fif there are a few things you could check out.

0

What about Taiwanese "Better Man" ? It's still going (I just marathoned the first 27 episodes), but it's pretty enjoyable. It's about three brothers finding their other half, which looks like it's going to end up being two sisters and their friend/cousin. "Far Away Love" is also up on Viki, but stops its subs around ep 20. It has the lead actor from Cheese in the Trap, but seems to be mostly light and fluffy.

0

Have you watched Page Turner?
So light and lovely

0

Sounds like you need Bollywood movies at this point in life. I grew up watching Indian cinema (yes, before it was named Bolly) then switched to all Korean and some C-dramas. And now I am back watching new and re-watching Bollywod classics. Along with older K-dramas I missed. The new Kdramas don't hold my interest for more than 6 episodes. After that I just fast forward it to the end.

0

Come to think of it you could try the weekend dramas like High Kick and Five Children!

@La Plume,

I know what you mean about MOTW. I've stuck with it and caught up, but have been washing my mind out with a couple of dramas and films over the past few weeks while OHYA was running.

Like Oshi (*waves*), I watched HEART TO HEART to see Lee Jae-Yoon (Tae-Jin) play a kinder role.

A couple of months ago, I came across Odessa Jones's "Ten Most Memorable 2015 K-Drama Scenes," and took a gander at them. A few of them intrigued me, and I've started watching and enjoying the shows that resonated with me... I started out as a sageuk watcher who was allergic to rom-coms and other modern tomfoolery, but in spite of myself, have been venturing into that territory. I enjoyed these two:

ORANGE MARMALADE
EX-GIRLFRIEND CLUB

Also caught Cdrama LOVE ME IF YOU DARE, SUNNY (2011), .

Earlier this week, I finally got around to watching TIME BETWEEN DOG AND WOLF as I needed a booster shot of LJK to tide me over until SCARLET HEART: GORYEO airs. I'm not into violent action flicks, so this one was just my speed. The car chases reminded me of BULLITT -- real time, with no explosions. How refreshing... But it was weird to see the Magistrate in a suit! ;-) Spotted Lee Tae-Sung among the gangsters. Previously had seen him in BLOSSOM AGAIN, and decided to take a gander at 9 END 2 OUTS (2 outs in the bottom of the ninth inning) -- and totally enjoyed it. Great fun, and in some ways, a parallel (or foil?) to OHYA.

Anyway, I hope some of them work for you. ;-)

A few more for you:

SECRET / SECRET THAT CANNOT BE TOLD (2007 Taiwanese film) - great music + time travel.

THE CLASSIC (2003) -- again, great music plus Cho Seung-Woo and Zo In-Sung. 'nuff said.

FLOWER BOY RAMYUN SHOP. A bad case of SLS for Lee Ki-Woo -- whom I didn't recognize at first, even though I'd just seen him in THE CLASSIC. Jung Il-Woo, and Park Min-Woo as Crazy Chicken.

FATAL INTUITION -- The poster was on the wall at MovieSound in OHYA, and I'm a sucker for Joo Won. There's a dash of Mugyo, too.

WELCOME TO DONGMAKGOL - a savored rewatch for me.

CASTAWAY ON THE MOON - Character and plotwise, some parallels with HEART TO HEART's female lead, but I was mainly watching for Jung Jae-Young, whose performance in DONGMAKGOL I really enjoyed.

MY FRIEND IS STILL ALIVE - Very touching, with lovely bromance and cute guys. One-shot drama special.

After finishing HWAJUNG / SPLENDID POLITICS (I got sidetracked for about 3 weeks after OHYA started), I needed another sageuk fix, and followed up with CSW in LIKE THE MOON ESCAPING FROM THE CLOUDS / BLADES OF BLOOD. Great swordfighting -- until the Japanese show up with firearms... Gorgeous OST.

Followed up with THE BLIND SWORDSMAN: ZATOICHI (2003, Japanese film). Do not watch if you cannot stomach gore and arterial spray... Just tune in for the final 15 minutes for the epic village festival. It's surreal. Available as a clip on YouTube.

NEKO ZAMURAI -- Fierce ronin hitman turns to mush in the paws of his target. Loved it.

ORANGE, Japanese live action film (not anime) -- Some parallels to TWO OUTS IN THE NINTH INNING. I didn't cry my eyes out, but it was touching and managed to extract some tears.

STEAL MY HEART aka CATCH ME (2013, film). A lighthearted romp that I enjoyed a lot as long as I kept suspending my disbelief over the good detective's (Joo Won's) aiding and abetting.

CONSPIRACY IN THE COURT -- I only got through the first episode before realizing I have to watch this sageuk when I'm in the right mood and am not watching anything else. Thanks for the tips, Thunderbolt and HeadsNo2!

I LIVE IN CHEONGDAMDONG - It was mentioned in a DB comment on July 3, so I took a gander, and found it surprisingly addictive. Before I knew it, I'd watched six episodes. (Viki has two episodes per installment.) Sit-com, but not all laughs. Reminds me at times of KEEPING UP APPEARANCES. Lee Sang-Yeob is utterly charming and drool-worthy.

THE BEAUTY INSIDE (2015, film) -- My husband found this on NetFlix, and we watched it over the July 4 weekend. Touching story of an 29-year-old man whose body changes every time he wakes up; it inexplicably started on his 18th birthday. Keep watching after the final credits...

Hope you find a good one in this batch...

@Boomboompow,

Second that, and will up the ante with the totally delightful 2-part HYANGDAN, with Choi Si-Won in the role that caught my eye. Which led me to watch him in SHE WAS PRETTY as well as the 2006 Chinese wuxia A BATTLE OF WITS. In addition to Andy Lau, the latter also starred the late martial artist and actor Yu Chenghui. I want to eventually get around to watching his Shaolin Temple films with Jet Li. I never thought I'd see the day I'd become interested in martial arts flicks, but it's happened. Go figure...

Before that, I'd watched BICHEONMU aka THE DANCE IN THE SKY (14 eps. in the Korean version, vs. 33 eps. in the Chinese version -- which I'm still on the lookout for with English subtitles). I was surprised at how fast I got engrossed in it... Thanks, Joo Jin Mo. ;-)

A comment here on DB mentioned BICHEONMU in comparison to DUELIST -- which was terrific IMHO, but your mileage may very.

His name is Bang Dae-han (17) who actually has hearing impairment. He can't hear but he can understand what others saying by watching people's mouths. He was cast thanks to one car CF 'Miracle to relay to deaf people' he did.

He said 'It was difficult to express and act the feeling because I've never done drama shooting before in addition to my hearing problem, but I could do the acting at my best forgetting my situation, thanks to PD and actors who were kind and encouraged me on the set. It was like dream to see myself in the broadcast".

M-T drama 'Beautiful Mind' is ratings disaster. It has such conflicting reviews. Some people praise the show as good thriller, and others complain that it is too complicated and makes no sense. Jang Hyuk is praised for his acting while Park So-dam is ridiculed for her acting (they even say if her awesome acting in previous movie was due to CG) and even blamed for show's dismal ratings.

PD Mo Wang-il had short interview between shooting scenes. [Star news]
They were shooting the scene Gae jin-sung(Park So-dam) was interrogating Lee Young-oh(Jang Hyuk) in the police station related to the murder (ep 5). PD Mo said "I hope this is one of scenes viewers fall for JH and PSD's acting." He is satisfied with acting overall. "I am more satisfied with actors' acting than I expected. Let alone Jang Hyuk ssi, So-dam is filling the parts (emotion and action) the writer gave her well. There are parts she doesn't express a lot, but she is doing well. Same goes with other actors."

About the plot, he said "In this drama, there are more things in representation area compared to other projects I've worked before. So it is very interesting to do directing. Doctor is not just a doctor but entangled with murder also, so he can show various sides to the viewers. This type is more interesting than typical typeset character."

About dismal ratings, he said. "About popularity, I wonder the writer and I missed that part. I'm disappointed and will keep thinking about that part."
He praised Jang Hyuk's acting but wonder why his character is so popular. "Lee Yong-oh character is supposed to get all the hate, but it didn't happen so I feel lost. He is a flawed character like Jin-sung (in emotion) and person you want to avoid because he is chilling, but the viewers think of him way too fondly. It must be due to Jang Hyuk ssi's acting, but I've never imagined. I was shocked."

About Jin-sung(Park So-dam), he said "Jin-sung is imperfect, deeply flawed character. In the center of the event, she tries to solve the problem but can't do anything. Because of her powerlessness hitting the reality wall, the viewers might think "Why she is like that" about her character. But there will be process for her growth and people will understand her by watching(and feeling) her development."

People wonder when Lee Yong-oh will start showing emotions through Jin-sung. "Lee Young-oh will start to have curiosity about Jing-sung thought some incidents and his emotion will change. Also there will be changes on Jin-sung and Hyun Suk-ju's relationship, Lee Young-oh and his father's conflicts etc to hold the viewers' attention. Since the script is still being worked on, I can't say for sure when that will be.. Actors' degree of satisfaction toward the project is very high. I assume that sentiment will be conveyed to the viewers soon through the broadcast."

I feel bad about this show's viewership ratings (I shouldn't, but can't help comparing to 'way too high' ratings of Doctors). Jang Hyuk is so awesome in this (along with Actor Heo who plays his father. He must be disappointed since he came back to dramaland after staying away so long).

btw Who is waiting for Ji Soo to show up in Doctors soon. I happened to read the interview of the PD who is doing the show 'Flower boy Bromance', and he picked Ji Soo and Nam Joo-hyuk couple/team as his favorite (out of 8 teams so far, which includes Lee Won-geun/Ji Soo's BF in 'Sassy Go Go' too). I have yet to find and watch the episode.

Thank you @Fan for translating!!

Jang Hyuk is wonderful in BM... The PD is right about him being able to project a nuanced and layered performance that makes him impossible to hate...

I think if they had more time to make it less confusing for the first few episodes the show could have had better ratings.

I just hope they continue to praise JH's acting and PArk So Dam's character improves and the writing continues to impress so that at least it will be a critically acclaimed show, even if the ratings aren't high.

0

Yes episode was stellar! Jang Hyuk really deserves all the kudos he has been getting for this show.

0

Thanks Fan for translating this. Here's my two cents about this.

Now, in BM the plot is interesting and I don't find any of the actors in drama lacking in acting department (not even those who are in minor characters), but the way some characters are written leaves much to be desired.I mean..come on people..what rookie traffic police officer is allowed to waltz into a Mortality conference (or any other conference for that matter) in a hospital? without any permission? And what kind of police station allows you to swap departments/units THAT easily? Sheesh..the writer/s should do their research and not spin out fantasies!!!! :(

So I find the criticism levelled at Park So-Dam is so unfair! She does well with what she is given. It is to her credit that the Jin-Sung character comes off as a naive-but-cute, bumbling idiot, as opposed to being a downright annoying, bumbling idiot. But as I've said before this could be an intriguing story, if executed in a proper manner could even be intriguing.

Having said all of this, I am still going to stick with this show instead of Doctors..now if we can have more of Jang Hyuk's after operation shower..oops..scrubbing scenes .... :P

Hello, all:

Not exactly a great week. Heat wave was horrible. Much stress in the Black community because of all the police shootings.

Dramas:

Wanted -- This leaves me so cold, and the more they pile on supposedly touching affecting emotion, the colder I feel. Yet I keep watching because ...lord knows why. Something to do? I can already imagine who the folks are behind the heir's murder conspiracy. Ah me.

Squad 38 -- Seriously good. The arrival of the Big Bad absolutely thrilled me. Usually we see the main baddie in the first two episodes. I'm wondering if there'll be escalating levels of Bad Guy-ery, or if Chairman Wang is gonna get more involved.

Flower in Prison -- The best part of this drama is that it feels very homey. I like this world. One could imagine living in it and going about one's regular life. Love our selfish villainess. I also love the relationship between Lord Yoon and our villainess. There's a very human element in all the relationships.

Mirror/Witch -- Still watching it but really also wanting it to just come to an end. Way too drawn out, with no true advances in plot.

I tried Uncontrollably Fond but am not in the mood for it.

J-drama

Ishi No Mayu was a good police procedural

Have a great weekend, all.

Flower in Prison is the show I like better now than before when Oknyeo was spy. I just love cute moments between the king and her. And villains seem somewhat funny (must be because of actors).

And I also wait for Mirror/witch to end - repeating same stuff endlessly- it should've been 16 ep show.

I think I picked a good week to check out Flower in Prison, not from the beginning but last week's 2 episodes.

I still don't care much for the 2 leads (hard to avoid) but Seo Ha-Jun (King Myungjong) was an instant winner. He is charming as heck! He reminds a bit of Ji Jin-Hee's Sukjong so I think I'll stick around and fan-girl over him and not think about history.

I hope Seo will graduate from weekend dramas to weekday primetime after Flower. He has potential.

I think one of the reason it's such a hard watch is because the leads are kinda meh compared to the supporting characters. The princess is sweet but a victim, no matter how powerful they try to make her appear. The king is riveting because he's just so self-engrossed. Oraboni is a perfect tragic lover. And oori shamaness is the one who sets the entire story and all the minor scenes in action. The princess and the hero are just kinda wedged in, and when they appear they don't shine with as much intensity as the others because their personalities are pretty basic and one-dimensional.

Lots of turmoil that is ongoing in the Black Community. My emotions are on E right now. Praying for peace, love, and justice to all of my fellow brothers and sisters.

I have been wanting to check out Flower in Prison but not too many people talk about it. I will probably get to that soon.

Am I the only one who stopped watching Squad 38? Not that it isn't good, I just may not be in the mood for it I guess.

I am with you on Mirror of the Witch. While I enjoy it, I really think 16 episodes would have been enough. Not sure what these next 4 episodes are going to be like.

I know what you mean about not being in the mood. I like it a lot though. I think I'm just tired of rom-coms. Plus I have a major crush on SIG. I think it's a good drama though, one of the best this year. If you can make it through a couple more episodes, maybe you'll be hooked. But maybe you just have to wait for the right time.

Yes, it's been seriously hard this week, this month, this year. I have this weird dread that the rest of the year will be crappy as well. Am trying to avoid getting into battles with certain types son social media because ...aaargh

I actually felt my heart/spirit drop when I saw how many more episodes of Mirror of the Witch we have to go. It actually feels burdensome. Which is odd because I want Flower in Prison to go on forever. I can't quite put my finger on why Witch is so burdensome to me.

Happy weekend and Ied
It's OT again
I didn't watch many show this week but I managed to watched many Slice of life Live Action
Ore Monogatari: Love it! It just like what I thought. Sakaguchi Kentaro also charming for small role and the leads are cute
Heroine Disqualified: This is hilarious if you can digest the j-shojo-drama humor. It's not really groundbreaking but pleasantly good. Then again, Sakaguchi Kentaro kills his role, he is so mesmerizing.

Will try Life Back Then and Orange next week...

Have any recomendation for the new drama?

Happy Open Thread beanies!

I'm still enjoying Lucky Romance but that ending. That freaking ending. I hope it's another fakeout. I don't care if it such a bad plot device. I need Suho to be alive and well. And for Bo-nui to continue not being superstitious. After throwing out her good luck charms and seeing Bo-ra all by herself, she deserves to be happy and believe in herslef (even just for another whole episode).

On the bright side, happy to report that I finally finished Signal. I finally decided to marathon the last eight episodes and I'm cursing myself that I didn't do this sooner (oh right I was drowning in work).

I screamed and cried at the television with all the things that happened with the story and the characters. Kim Bum-joo is the face of evil. My heart breaks for Sun-woo and I hated how things ended for him. However I'm glad that our heroes got a happy ending. I got chills during the last few minutes of the finale especially when the radio lit up ( WHO THE F*** IS ON THE OTHER SIDE?!).

I honestly don't hate how things ended but if tvN is gonna set us up with that kind of finale I'm hoping they'll push through with a second season. I'll be on board as long as the same production crew/team, writer, and cast members return.

Now I need a good mystery/suspense/thriller drama. Can anybody recommend something that has the same intensity as Signal? Even just the mindfuck aspect. I heard Beauitful Mind is good, is it worth watching?

Thank you and have a fantastic weekend!

Hello there fellow Signal lover, I marathoned Sign from the same writer as Signal and enjoyed it a lot..until the final episode.
*SPOILER alert- it has a heartbreaking ending*. But the drama was intense and you can see the very same tightly woven plot that you found in Signal.
I have yet to start Phantom/Ghost (its about Cyber crime), but I have also heard good things about this, so it might be worth checking that too.

BM is not bad (though many will disagree ), but if you go into it with an open mind (VERY open I must say) and ignore several WTF aspects in earlier episodes, it could be a good watch. :)

Watched this week:

Beautiful Gong-shim - I'm up to the part where the truths are starting to be revealed.  Really enjoying this drama.

Master God of Noodle - They could have ended things on a bit differently, but ....... oh well.

Entertainer - Finally finished this! ....... While it wasn't super spectacular, I'm still glad I stuck with it and watched the whole thing.  Love all those guys in the band!

Lucky Romance - Just started this.  Looking forward to Bo-nui's adventure.

Uncontrollably Fond - Caught bits and pieces of the first episode.  I really didn't know what to expect, but from the parts I did watch, I'm interested enough to want to watch ep 2.  We'll see what happens.

That's all for now. ....... Everyone take care and have a great Friday!

I went back to watching Gong Shim, last week at episode 16. It seems like a drama I should watch the end of. Same for Master Noodlemaker. I figured Gong Shim would do all sorts of stuff to keep the secret drawn out and although I loved the cuteness of NGM I just can't deal with supreme idiocy implanted into stories. For Noodle, I suspected an ending I would be peeved at. The tragedy pile-ons just got me waaaaaaaaay nervous. I didn't want to get all invested and then be screaming at my laptop at the ending episode.

For Noodles, for me at least, I think I didn't even have time to be peeved due to the head-shaking and eyerolling about the writer's decision to throw in some nonsensical decisions/actions. ....... I didn't really dislike the entire drama, it certainly had a stylish start and some good twists, but the ending (and the end for some) was unfortunate.

I feared the "doomed tragic noble hero" trope. As soon as our noble should-ve-been-a-cop orphan decided to stupidly go to prison when a good defense was viable, I told myself, "Do not trust this writer. This writer is aiming for tragedy and this character will not end up well. The orphan prosecutor will of course end up unscathed without having to own up to the fact that she murdered....for no other reason except that because she is a woman... I'm not sure if that's how it turned out but once I realized I was being set-up, I opted out.

Gong Shim I would've been frustrated at because I like the main couple a lot but I hate stupid inorganic drama decisions. I figured I'd also end up with everyone forgiving everyone else and Dan Tae giving his company to his cousin, with Gong Mi getting her rich man. It's cynical to assume but after Bluebird's House and Unfortunate Boyfriend burned me, I still haven't recovered my ability to give a drama the benefit of the creative doubt.

What a week! Really looking forward to Beautiful Kong Shim this weekend. By the way after all the interest in Namgoong Min's shower scene in My Secret Hotel I feel I should mention Oh Joo-Won has a very impressive shirtless pushup scene in Suprlus Princess in about episode two. He would not loos easily to NGM :P. Now as to the show I do wish they had let Minah take her wig off by now. I have always felt this show was a lot like Ugly Betty and wanted her to get more comfortable with herself!

Five Kids cracked 30% last week as the in-laws crossed a line and Golf Couple ran into a very rough patch. Also the long awaited appearance by Kim Sang-Min's parents happened. Mom is played by Evil Principal from Cheer Up and Dad is played by that white haired actor who is usually an evil arms dealer (Monster) or a Chinese businessman (Lie to Me). They're both playing against type as the Dad is super nice and laid back and the mom is only mildly demanding.

I can't say I'm super excited for any of the weekly dramas currently airing, except maybe Beautiful Mind. I'm watching that and Doctors and Lucky Romance and Monster and all of them have good and bad points. LR is probably the most solid out of all of them and I do enjoy it even if the bad luck is painfully contrived. I did check out Uncontrollably Fond and I'm really not sure. It seems like it has great production values but the story already is having me take a pinch of salt to get going.

I am still really interested in After the Show Ends and I am hoping Viki picks it up as a fan channel.

Really been liking monster the past couple of episodes especially. What's nice is that the characters are actually smart. Sung yuri was a rediscovery for me here, her acting is just good. Jung bo seok or kang ji hwan for daesang!
Flower in prison- I feel like this could be stronger if we had a more capable lead actress, but nevertheless, I'm enjoying the plot.

I really feel like they're just making shit up as they go along to stretch it out. There's just no real strong true feeling of an arc to it. I think that some of the actors are really just carrying the show for all they're worth (especially Lee El as Ok Chae Ron (sp?) the Chinese arms dealer's agent who has been Tan's helper since she found him on the street. I don't think I've ever had such a case of Second Female Lead Syndrome before. It's sad her sidekick, Evil Healer Knockoff crossed the line and had to be put down.

I was annoyed that the CCTV was broken at the hospital in Beautiful Gong Shim (not recording the unhooking the ventilator machine scene) resulting in Dan Te suspecting Joon Soo. But I was just as annoyed with the working CCTV in Beautiful Mind that captured Young O in the morgue and led to false assumptions. And then there’s the missing CCTV footage. And the creepy spy CCTV aspect in Master: God of Noodles (reminiscent of Harry in I Miss You). When was the last time a working CCTV actually helped properly solve something? Well, it’s not the CCTV’s fault; but then, how else would the plot thicken? CCTVs are critical to kdramas. Can you imagine in there were CCTVs in Mirror of the Witch although I wonder if shamanesses don’t show up on film, or maybe black magic wouldn’t either.

Abnormal Summit fans – the subs are back for a new season 2! Episodes 103-105 are subbed on drama cool. The new format is 9 permanent members (Guliame and Alberto remain from the first season and everyone else is new) and the other 3 foreign representatives appear as guests for 1 ep only. It’s different, seemingly more political, news related, and serious. But there are still topics discusses with the abnormal/normal vote. I do miss Takuya, Julian, and even Tyler, but give it a try. It is definitely a unique talk show.

Uncontrollably Fond – I like it. I thought it was cool how episodes 1 and 2 ended up in the same place. Woo Bin is just the supreme bad jerk (again), now isn’t he?

38 Task Force – very cool development that a job well done isn’t actually done, yet. I love that Jung Do has a soft spot for Sung Il. Makes his heart tingly with that feeling of doing something good for someone else. Aw, ain’t that sweet ~

Have a relaxing weekend, everyone! \/

ooooh, that broken CCTV in Gong Shim really got on my nerves! So it was "broken" at the ICU, how about in the elevators, lobby, and hospital entrance? Sheeeesh, people. I was up in arms about the same thing in Lucky Romance this week but that ended up being a fake out ☺️

With Beautiful Gong Shim, I think it was the conversation between the doctor and Dante in ICU where they both just skimmed over the broken CCTV like it was business as usual. For a detailed lawyer, it seemed like such an oversight on his part to jump to conclusions, and worse still - an assumption by the writer that the viewers would just go along with it as a way to advance the plot and make Joon Soo the suspect. It annoyed the living daylights out of me. Anyhoot, still love Gong Shim!

It's interesting to watch India and Pakistan reps interact, and also the huge disparity in the pace of life in Korea and India is intriguing. Lucky explains things well and brings a lot to the table. I really enjoyed Jongshin and the discussion on sad ballads, saying goodbye, breaking up, and even the views on death. France, I dunno ... and Switzerland seems a bit sheltered. It is a unique format though, foreigners in Korea on Korean topics. i think the MCs are learning a lot!

Finished Oh Hae Young over the weekend and it was a pretty good ending although I felt like the final episode felt like a bunch of scenes scattered together...the OST for this drama is one of the best I've ever heard and so I've been playing "What about Love?" every morning while I do my makeup cause it's so peppy and fun...and well the entire OST is worth listening to over and over.

Still watching You're Beautiful...currently on ep 11 so I should be done by next week and then I'm gonna start She was Pretty based on a recommendation from my cousin!

Looking forward to W- love Lee Jong Suk! <3 and the story premise seems very interesting

It's been a coule of years since I saw You're Beautiful, but isn't it the cheesiest, dreamiest, escape kdrama ever? I fell in love with JGS ever since You're Beautiful! ♥

Unlike DOTS (recaps and recaps..yawn).. its pretty ok...

ep 19 majorly is character description and then some 10 minutes or less of final thank yous and bbyes

Ep 20 has more meat with a combined talk show..they play some Q /A game based on the show..

And well i wasn't following the news .. but read here and there abt OTP's real life shipping/doubtful relationship..

COuld not see any chemistry..very professional set of folks..

I'm fairly new to k-dramas but I was wondering why Let's Fight Ghost hadn't premiered yet since I had read it would be replacing Oh Hae Young Again. I've actually never watched the specials episodes before but I loved this drama so much I just looked on dramafever and they're there so I'll definitely be watching those tonight! I have watched a few BTS videos of OHYA on YouTube and was intrigued to find Eric loves Hello Kitty (he has pink HK merch haha) as I am kind of a Hello Kitty fangirl myself...his fans were commenting on the YouTube videos that his love for Hello Kitty is neverending lol so I googled it and found that it was actually a thing...lol now I feel that if I met Oppa we'd have something in common (a girl can dream right?)

anyway yes You're Beautiful is definitely cheesy, dreamy, and totally escapy which is exactly what I need right now and omg I too have fallen in love with JGS (I have saved quite a few screenshots of his adorable pouty face on my phone lol) and weird thing I noticed just like his character Tae Kyung his birthdate is different on numerous websites...Dramafever states August and Viki states September, birth secret anyone? lol but yeah anyway I've added his drama Love Rain to my list of dramas to watch because I must see him again as he has skyrocketed to be a bonafide celeb crush for me! <3 does anyone recommend anything else as must watch from him? :)

I am also one of not many fans of Love Rain, although I always preempt it by saying you have to ff through the first 4 eps (1970s background) and then it jumps right in at the start of rp 5 with JGS in the present. It's really a fun kdrama. Seo In Guk debuts in this kdarma, too.

I recommend ff the first 4 eps of LR too. The back story almost put me off the show. SIG is amazing as per usual.

While new shows do often start right after the old one, sometimes they need a week or two of filler. This could be specials, reruns of movies, or sporting events or something. Even mini-dramsa (1-4 episodes).

It also has to with OHYA's success. The special episodes brought ratings higher than some of OHYA's initial episodes so it proved to be worth it. One of the highlights of the drama was the cast chemistry so I'm definitely happy we got these specials.

0

in my opinion JGS did a really good job in beethoven virus. I liked his character most of all - ok, next to lee soon jae halbe. ;) have to warn you though, the drama itself might be a bit boring, especially if you're not into clasical music.

Still loving Lucky Romance. What am I going to do without Ryu Junyeol in dramaland after next week :O

How amazing were the last two episodes of Police Squad 38? It was so much fun to watch that rich jerk begging. I am so excited for what's to come now that Jungdo as decided to officially help Sungil! The team is awesome. Love Bangsil ajummah the most. "You know what's great about having money? I can buy a lot of identical cars" priceless.

Doctors and Wanted are still entertaining. I am invested in Hyejung's story and growth and I am growing fond of Ji Hyunwoo's character.

I was pleasantly surprised by Uncontrollably Fond. I knew I had to check it out when I saw a screencap of Woobin with that fluffy Pororo ^^

Almost done Oh Haeyoung Again. It is indeed well written and I enjoyed it a lot.

Started watching the jdramas Gochisousan and Pride. I can't believe Pride manage to score a soundtrack made of only Queen songs! Shouldn't that be a fortune in copyrights? It's amazing! And Gouchisousan is adorable. Meiko + food = true love hahaha

Finally I am also watching Jackie Chan Adventures. The man is a gem. Omg his answers to the fan questions are simply the best: "I know I am crazy but I am not stupid". I love going back to shows that I use to watch as a kid and having them be just as wonderful the second time around. It brings back so many fond memories.
ONE MORE THING: can I just say that Uncle Chan and Uncle Iroh (from Avatar) are officially my favourite uncles in cartoonverse ever.

2 weeks ago I was smashingly happy - OHYA was cute (and Eric even more so), Lucky Romance was making me laugh (and Se Ho was making me swoon), and I was looking forward to Doctors' story unfolding and the arrival of Uncontrollably Fond. I was on an absolutely drama high.

Somehow I feel like I'm in a drama hole at the this week.

- OHYA has finished
- Lucky Romance got hit by a truck (literally. Okay a van? an SUV? I couldn't bring myself to watch again).
- Doctor's Dr Hong's kiss was awkwardly positioned (I don't have a problem with them kissing, just the way they were standing, and honestly Park Shin Hye looked exactly like how one would expect if your high school teacher kissed you. Nothing wrong with the actors but maybe the direction?)
- Episode 1 of UF tells me JY is gonna die in a year? Much like the character he played in that episode I totally disagree with that plan!! I don't know if my heart can fully commit to keep watching.

Sorry I just wanted to whinge about the state of affairs in my drama world because no one in my real world understands my woes!

Pfffffft. Are you me? I feel like I could have written this comment.

I think my (drama) mood was already down when I started Uncontrollably Fond so the tone of the show is taking some getting used to. Even though, duh, it's a melodrama. Not like it isn't to be expected. I actually like the feel and am compelled to continue so I can figure out how the characters became who they are. Problem is that my favorite Lee Kyung-hee dramas (Sang do, let's go to school, Thank you) usually have this way of getting me really invested right away & that isn't happening here, partially because of...the dreamy pacing? I feel like this is a generous way of describing it. Everything in this drama feels familiar, yet strange all at once and I'm not sure what to make of it yet.

I also think I'm just getting impatient for W-Two Worlds. I want something adventurous and gripping right now so I think I'm not getting easily satisfied.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

yeah, there's something about the first ep of UF that feels really disjointed, and while Lee Kyung-hee first episodes are usually all setup and things don't get kicking until the second or third week, this time it just isn't.....gripping.

It LOOKS really gorgeous and well-produced but I wasn't expecting this level of slowness, and neither of the leads is a good enough actor to cover for that.

That kiss was totally awkward and horrible and a HOT MESS!!! I mean, the dancing in the rain part was cheesy to the max. I guess, kudos for the nostalgic song. But, I've seen KRW kiss scenes that made me buckle. This was just like 2 little kids kissing. Maybe it's PSH, she always looks like a dead fish - always just poking lips out. It was so bland!!!!!!!! Yes, the positioning didn't help. But he could have taken her like a MAN and do the damn thing. So disappointed.

I feel a bit shallow that I felt caught up in the romance, but that feeling was totally dashed after I viewed the kiss?! :(

This week in my global endeavors:

Korean:
Entertainer - on ep 13
Jackpot - on ep 5 (each ep I'm happy to watch but then it takes me forever to get back. But I am enjoying the show so far)
Lucky Romance - on ep 9
Uncontrollably Fond - Viki doesn't have it so I'll be searching around.
Pucca - on Season 2 ep 2 (I watched this show for the first time long before I got into K-ent and then found out it was Korean, lol)
Doctors, TF38, and W are still on my list. One needs to air while I need to complete some dramas to add more.

Japanese:
Nodame Cantabile- still paused on ep 4 *smh*
Haven't You Heard, I'm Sakamoto - on ep 9
Tanaka-kun is Always Listless - on ep 10
High School Fleet - on ep 10 (for being the show I was least interested in at the beginning of the spring season, I'll really miss it)
Unhappy Go Lucky - on ep 11
Pan De Peace - completed this week
Love Live Sunshine - starting it tomorrow

Taiwanese:
Say Again Yes I Do (most angsty show I've ever seen. I love it!)

British:
1995 Pride and Prejudice

American:
Girl Meets World - season 3 ep 6 comes on tonight!!!

Australian:
Mako Mermaids - on Season 3 ep 12 (got a little ahead of schedule while having debilitating cramps)

I feel so bad for Lucas. Especially with the implications this season that Maya doesn't even really like him. Hmph. That made me upset for a few hours.

I hate how it's just up to the girls to decide. He's not a puppy. He has feelings. I'd even treat a puppy better than they have.

I saw some spoilers on YouTube and just froze. I'm not sure, if I'll be happy with this episode.

But hey, rumor has it that "Girl Meets Ski Lounge" will end with all in a relationship, even if it's not the ones fans expect.

I'm 3 seasons in and Disney shows only usually last until season anyway so I might just ride it out to know everything. Lol

0

*Disney shows only last until season 4 anyway so I might ride it out.

Ok, have now seen the new GMW. I think the real problem I have with the show is, I don't mind the teen actors and their storyline is decent, even if frustrating. But episodes that focus on the older cast more, especially BMW cast remind me of how great it could be. Most of the people on this show helped with BMW so why can't the 2010s kids stories be as good? Or will I see them better with nostalgia?

I'm still in though. Rider Strong! My live for Shawn Hunter will never die. I'm still fangirling! My family thinks I'm crazy.

Also, I may be joining the Zaya ship. Didn't even know it was a thing until last week. But I can see it. And if this whole Maya/Lucas conspiracy theory is right, I can see myself shipping it.

But really what happened to Zay getting main cast billing credit? Why isn't he in the theme song? Why does he disappear for an episode here and there? Where is Isadora? I'm used to lack of representation, but at this point PR is just teasing. And I do not appreciate it.

0

@Purple preach girl!

I try to gloss over the fact that the younger actors are so incredibly stiff. It makes perfect sense that they look/act worse then the older folks. Time will tell who has talent and who doesn't.

Perfectly serious. I didn't watch an ep of each show this week. Some I watched a couple eps. I'm not a marathoner and I get distracted easily. In total, I probably watched 16 - 20 episodes this week. My shows range from 4 minutes to 77 minutes.

Ironically though, I do have insomnia and when I don't get to take my meds, I'm liable not to sleep. P&P was only watched this week because I couldn't fall asleep 1 night until 5 am.
Otherwise, I watch shows as I clean and fall asleep *Say I Do Again is my night show*

Entertainer, Jackpot, Lucky Romance will be for tomorrow. And probably some Pucca
I have an episode of Sakamoto to finish and might finish the Unhappy Go Lucky entire show. Then, Love Live at some point towards the end of the night. I can't believe it's starting again!!!

Finished ep 12 of SAYID and now I'm watching 13. I'm glad the evil is starting to be seen and the leads are slowly getting on track. The secondary triangle is getting depressing. I want the underdog to win and he probably will. But the girl will be upset for an ep or 2. The other couple is almost to the end zone and then they ruin it for themselves. I love them so much, I almost want to call them my parents but that would betray 옴마 Taliw & 아빠 Tenten. Shi-Yu/Qian Qian get it together.

Tempted to find and watch P&P 1940, 1958, 1980. All will be rewatched except 1958. I have 2 days off work. I'll see.
GMW made me happy!!!
Got to ep 13 on Mako Mermaids. Gonna try to give that a break because I'll be close to done with the season on Netflix.
I now have a plan for HSMC: College Class
And I'm almost done with the novel I'm reading. So I'll be rereading an old favorite next week. Good progress for today. Good schedule for the week.

I had fun this Friday! Only my 4th time in IT and my 2nd time giving media updates. Have a good rest of your weekend! See my fellow beanies on various post.

Already gave my opinion on Doctors above. Other than that, I've recently watched Kazoku no Katachi (aka Family's Form) and Mondai no Aru Restaurant. I enjoyed both of them, but I need something different and light. Desperately. The current state of things is making it difficult to breathe. I need light with basically zero hints of melancholy, sadness, or darkness for distraction and I'm finding that hard to find in dramas right now. Think I'll be turning to anime for the time being. Maybe some classic 90s romcoms too.

Our comments are really similar, but everytime I try to watch something lighter, it simply doesn't work, I always end up watching something heavier (I want to change this). I watched Mondai, like a year ago, and I loved it, it's great <3

I think you're like me. You like the bittersweet rom-coms not the saccharine ones. It's harder to find good examples of them because they demand better writing/actors. I think Japan does lighter/weirder stuff better from what I've heard. How about trying a jdrama? Less romance but lots of fun.

>>I need light with basically zero hints of melancholy, sadness, or darkness for distraction<<

I think of this J-drama
--- Hana Kimi 2007
--- Manhattan Love Story
--- Shinya Sokudo (but it's not really light for some people)
--- Fuben na Benriya
--- Mahoro Ekimae Bangaichi
--- . Switch Girl!! (you don't even need to think for this one, just watch)

JMovie
--- Ore Monogatari (super cute IMO)
--- Heroine Disqualified
--- Ao Haru Ride (not as good as the anime)
--- I Have To Buy New Shoes
--- My Pretend Girlfriend

This past sprung anime season has been good for light-hearted

Haven't You Heard, I'm Sakamoto? - is a parody of the cool, glasses guy
Tanaka-kun is Always Listless - has light-hearted comedy
Anne Happy/Unhappy Go Luck - I recommend a little lower than the male driven animes.

Best wishes!

Hello people, have a nice weekend!
I want to watch a good drama. A good rom-rom drama. Can someone recommend me one, please? Kind of recent, from 2013 to now.

I've watched tons of " emotionally intense" dramas like Misaeng, Bridal Mask, Signal and Bad Guys and I want to watch something lighter.

Try Marriage Not Dating and One More Happy Ending. The latter is a bit flawed and the former a bit predictably but both are enjoyable.

I read somewhere that One More Happy Ending becomes angsty or depressing in the second half. I'm still stuck at episode 8 and I'm kinda scared in continuing it. . . but I was wondering if the show continues to balance out the drama and the comedy during the remaining 8 episodes.

In my opinion One More Happy Ending would have been so much better if it weren't for the character of Haejoon. He sucked the funny out of it.

There are a few angsty episodes but the ending was funny and cute so I don't know...

For me, around ep 8 of OMHE was a low point. It does get better and the leads might not even be my favorite couple. I loved all of the stories and related to a couple of them.

But you might want to ff Haejoon. He gets annoying and I hard difficulty not just hating the actor, lol.

0

OMHE did indeed shift down in energy and start to drag halfway through. Second Marriage Not Dating though.

Divorce Laywer in Love is good. Heart to Heart is cute though it has some Dire Family Secret Overreacted Drama in it but not too bad.

For extra cute fluff: The Mermaid (Surplus Princess) despite threat of bubbledom. Bonus because the leads hooked up in real life. The show manages to work in parodies of Attack on Titan, Sailor Moon, and Terminator as well.

It doesn't seem to be everyone's cup of tea, but perhaps also try Ho-gu's Love. The background story is rather heavy and there is a pretty absurd take on gayness, but the overall tone is light and cute, and I had a few laugh-out-loud moments (squids! :-) ). To this day it is one of the few dramas I rewatch once in a while. I am a sucker for romance underdogs... :-)

I was going to comment bomb the Open Thread like last week but the heat wave is getting to me. The news has not been good all around and things feel tense in NYC. Well maybe that's just my neighborhood.

I wanted to do a rundown of the show's I'm watching but really it feels more like dabbling. Now that Dear My Friends and Oh Hae Young is over my list of shows I watch live is gone to 1 (Five Children weekend drama). Doctors, UF, BM and Lucky Romance all feel a bit bland but watchable to varying degrees. Creatively the shows don't represent any kind of challenge to the status quo so less exciting to watch. As examples of genre dramas they aren't top tier. It makes for less exciting watching but I suppose you can't maintain crazy enthusiasm forever.

TF38 is and will always be amazing. It's my late night viewing on Wednesdays. Thanks again to Drama beans for picking it up. SIG~ I love yoooou :P

I saw the first show recap of After The Show which is quite an intriguing premise. I'm still waiting on recaps so haven't seen it but it was an interesting attempt at something different. I'm quite excited by the news coming out for The Good Wife remake. I want to see what korea does with such an intense premise.

I've been asking myself about the kind of format changes/interesting things I'd want to see from Korea. I'd really love it if they produced something like Parks and Recreation. Not necessarily the docu-drama format but feel-good show. A show based less on romance and more about growth/friendship. I know Misaeng was sort of that but Parks and Rec has this amazingly positive vibe about how every person can be better. I think I'd like to see that kind of thing in Korea. It would probably turn into a bittersweet melo :)

What about you guys? What shows would you like to see Korean television remakes of or formats that might be fun to see?

I would love them to do a mockdocumentary a la The Office. I was so sad when the idea was not well received with Producers. I just love the genre in comedies.

I would love to see more science-fiction. I think the only dramas I've seen that was sci-fi was Joseon X-Files and I guess You Who Came From the Stars. Something like Doctor Who or Firefly could be fun. Also, It would be interesting to see how korean society and culture views the future. American and Japanese have a lot of stories set in a future dystopia.

I would love them to have shorter ep, like 12 episode and the freaking SP/special episode , it can be about the back story or more the cutesy side or the after story but I am loving the SP of drama for a nostalgic moment.

Then more story about real job that doesn't really prominent on love story,
maybe something like Doctor X : Gaemon Michiko, or something like Person of Interset and The Blacklist, something that doesn't put the romance as the last and foremost goal to achieve the ending

I'd love to see something along the lines of a "Korean finishing school" drama where Koreans raised in other countries are sent to a finishing school to learn the Korean way. Each student would be paired up with a local. The drama would revolve around the connections between the student and their host - some stories of finding yourself, others of romance, others of healing.
The other drama I'd love to see is of women who go into the army - maybe a Korean version of the BBCs Our Girl. Would LOVE to see that.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my question last week, now I have a list of other dramas to watch! I, Claudius, Broadchurch, and Under the Greenwood Tree probably top the list. And my friend totally cracked up when she saw all the Richard Armitage swooning. Someday in heaven I know I'm gonna end up talking to him and won't be able to look him in eyes for all the fangirling I've done on earth. Same goes for Lee Jong Suk. Dear heavens I'm blushing.

But, in other drama news:

Love Me If You Dare: I'm on episode 21 and have trouble breathing while I watch. This is hands down the scariest drama I've ever seen with the most twisted villain. And while the romance/thriller had a bit of trouble blending at first, it's gotten leaps and bounds better. I just found out it came from a chinese novel, and then found an fan's English translation online (until I know enough to buy and read the original). I'm so excited!

Beautiful Mind: I watched three episodes, decided it was a bit boring (with some super shaky camerawork, heh) but twenty minutes later I realized I was terribly invested in our hero and jumped back on board. Just catching up, for now.

Beautiful Gong-shim: Lalalalalala I don't want spoilers! I've invested my time elsewhere this week, but I'll get back to you!

MotW: Same to you, show! Although I did peeeek at the recap comments, I'm glad it's kept it's momentum.

Other than that, I've just been looking up Korean music like crazy (I need more CNBlue in my life). Who knew Spotify had OSTs?! Hehe now I can listen to Entertainer's soundtrack aaalll the time. :) Happy Friday, everyone! Have a fantabulous weekend!

Ellllllllooooooooooo OT folks,

The weather is all sunshiny and warm and after a spell of gloomy, wet, cold days, this change of weather is mostly welcome! :D
On the drama front, I'm afraid that I am fast approaching a drama slump...The dramas I am watching has dropped to three and I can't find any enthusiasm about upcoming dramas..except may be "Bring it On Ghost" and "Scarlet Heart:Goryeo"

So I am watching and enjoying MoTW. I must say that Hong Joo owns this show-she is so much of a flawed character and I'm loving the budding bromances as well :) The show does well to keep the romance aspects low keyed, and I really wish that they had a more grown up actress for the princess..

Beautiful Gong Shim- Enough of the angst, and misunderstandings show! Bring in on the cute puppies' bromance and romance ASAP please :)

BM- Let's just keep watching and praying this will not turn out be another WTF train wreck :(

Since I need some manly Lee-Jun-Ki in my life I am rewatching Arang and the Magistrate. Oh my Lee-Jun Ki................................ *starry eyed fan girl mode*

The Barefoot Friends team had a challenge to compete in a real swimming competition. He would get up at dawn and go to the pool to practice. UEE, who swam competitively in HS, was awesome. Anyhoot, he did overcome his intense fear in that show, so I knew he would go to the highest mark and jump easily. Go, Yoon Shi Yoon! Hello everybody! I've been a long time lurker at Dramabeans and an even longer watcher of k-dramas, but this is my first time posting on an open thread, so I'm excited to join the conversation!

None of the recent broadcast dramas have really caught my eye, so I've been delving into the world of web dramas. I started out with Love Cells 1+2, and I found it to be a relatively easy watch. KYG was especially adorable and by far the best part of the drama for me; not to mention, I absolutely wanted all of her clothes and styling. I was thinking, if her new character in MDBC is anything like Nebi - basically a love advisor who ends up falling for her student against her best intentions - I will be a very happy viewer come August. And if anybody has good web dramas, please do tell! I'm finding them to be nice for the lack of commitment and quirky vibes.

I watched an interesting drama this week called Addicted aka Heroin....it's a chinese web drama about BL love (boy's love, or gay love) and it was actually really awesome. I've never really been into BL drama's but they've been more on the rise of late. This one's got a lot of controversy, having been taking off online portals after amassing millions and millions of views...viewers were left with an cliffhanger ending and no news of it being picked up again or a second season....*wails*. The leads were FANTASTIC and it was sad for me to hear that both of them have been banned off of other dramas and variety shows because they've depicted gay characters in the drama *sad*

In other worlds...I also watched the thai lakorn Roy Leh Sanaeh Rai..which was pretty much your typical slap-and-kiss drama but dear lawd is DJ PUSH just gorgeous. He's such a natural and the romantic scenes make me blush, he really knows how to turn up the charm. Plot wise though, the drama was an absolute mess.

Beautiful mind: Jang Hyuk broke my heart into pieces at the end of ep 6, I still can't get over it and that BGM choice ! *slow clap*. He is just so good in this, is brutally good and mesmerizing. I'm waiting/ hoping for more character development for Park Sodam character. The chemistry between the two characters is quiet interesting even more after the last episode looking forward to the future episodes.

Now it's holiday time !!!! I can binge watch all the k-drama and J-drama I couldn't watch hallelu to that.

Yes - definitely give MOTW a try. It is different from most of the dramas I've watched so far, with the fantasy/magic element. The show is beautifully shot, well acted, and the story gets me all knotted up so that I cannot wait for the next episode to air. And the villian is so well crafted and acted that I find myself grumbling anytime I think of her - ugh I hate her so much!! (The actress is killing it in this role!) Enjoy!

Happy OT Friday all! I see several other folks have asked for drama recommendations today, so I apologize for being redundant. But I am having abdominal surgery next week that will have me down for the count for several weeks. I am looking for some classic kdramas to watch that won't have me belly-laughing or potentially sobbing, since this will be difficult and painful for awhile. ;)

I've previously enjoyed dramas such as Nine, Healer, and Signal, and I always enjoy a good rom-com. MOTW just got me started into saeguks (is that spelled right?), so I am happy to try others of this genre as well. And long series won't bother me, as I will have a lot of time on my hands.

I have some on my list, such as Six Flying Dragons and King 2 Hearts, but I don't know if they fit my lack of laughing/crying requirement right now. What are some of the classics that a kdrama fan should go back and watch?

0

Required fields are marked *

As much as I King 2 Hearts is my all time favourite drama, it did make me cry (I don't cry often at movies/dramas). Although, it was only at the very end.

If you want to get into saeguks I would recommend The Princess' Man, Empress Ki and Arang and the Magistrate.

And for thrillers you might like Two Weeks, My Beautiful Bride, Bad Guys, Hello Monster (I Remember You) and Liar Game.

For a feel-good drama maybe Cheer Up (Sassy GoGo), I Need Romance 3, Monstar, Queen Inhyun's Man, and the jdrama The Memorandum of Kyoko Okitegami.

Prompt rétablissement! I hope you enjoy the dramas and help you feel better quicker after you surgery :)

I'm not sure what you've watched, but how about My Name is Kim Sam Soon and Dalja's Spring? Story of Hyang Dan is short and sweet. Love & Marriage is not a classic, but light and funny.

if you liked Nine, you might also wanna check out The Three Musketeers, also with Lee Jin-wook.

Story of a Man is generally solid, with a memorable villain performance by Kim Kang-woo.

Hope all goes well with your surgery!

Good luck! Just been there (Btw, thanks everyone for recommendations :-) )

Going through the list of recapped series, possibilities: Coffee Prince (a must-watch classic), High School King of Savvy, History of the Salaryman (a bit unusual, and fantastic character by Jung Ryeo-won), King of Dramas (though Siwon actually is hilarious), Let's Eat 1 and 2, Sungkyunkwan Scandal.

Long series: Reply 1988 is actually quite long when you consider that episodes are two hours long, but it is a very pleasant watch. I made sure to spoil myself about the husband, so there was no room for disappointment. Yoona's Street was also a very good, quiet watch. For sageuks, there's Empress Ki. Apparently Six Flying Dragons has put it to shame, but I found it very addictive.

Then again, if you can't laugh or cry, perhaps action/thriller/intrigue, like Two Weeks or Liar Game. Liar Game no matter what :-) .

Classic kdramas that won't make you laugh or cry hard enough to hurt?

How about Goong (2006)? It has all the fluff and GREAT chemistry between the OTP, and while it's rather funny, it's not side-splittingly so. Still very enjoyable, though!

I do think thriller/action dramas might be good for the no-laughing/no-crying criteria. Two Weeks, The Chaser and Time Between Dog and Wolf might be worth a try.

DramaMama, Best of luck with your recovery! Rest, rest and then rest some more while your body heals and recovers from the insult that is major surgery ?
My favorite classic rom com kdrama list is
Sam Soon (always #1 in every way!)
Full House
My Girl
Goong
Coffee Prince

These have come to feel to me like the 'essential foundation' to KD rom com watching, like you need them in order to lay down the basics for everything that follows. LOL They're the building blocks, like Algebra 101 or Freshman English in school. Except for kdrama being more important than school, of course. I'm only half kidding ?

For sageuks I loved Six Flying Dragons and immediately watched Tree With Deep Roots which technically follows SFD in time. They're both just breathtaking, so I nominate them as well. Also, they have fantastic recaps (by Heads No 2).

Sorry for the treatise, I just had to get that off my chest!

All the best to you @DramaMama, hope your surgery goes smoothly and you recover fast!

I like the recommendations that have been suggested to you already and second many of them that I've watched.

Long ago I watched (and rewatched) To Marry a Millionaire... I only recall being slightly annoyed, that I enjoyed the romance and that I neither laughed or cried over it, and liked the outside S Korea scenes. It has a very handsome Go Soo!

A bit on the long side, melo but ending sweetly was Spring Waltz with a very young Han Hyo Joo. I liked the OTP.

If you like things like Nine and Healer and Signal, maybe one of the more recent offerings that you'd like is I Remember You - I don't recall doing a belly laugh or crying over it, but I enjoyed it immensely. And Seo In Guk is hot in it!

On a different tack, there's Sassy Go Go - feel good and neither over heavy nor silly. Short and easy to watch and the leads have the greatest chemistry. :)

So I'm watching:

Lucky Romance: Just a fun, easy watch elevated by the lead actors.

Five Children: Refreshing overall weekend drama that probably shouldn't have been extended.

Doctors: Standard k-drama fare but I like the lead characters, especially PSH's character actually acting like a grown up. Nice.

Beautiful Minds: In it for our doc's relationship with his father as well as, finally, some forward movement with PSD's character. She doesn't deserve the grief she's been given about this role. She's playing it the way the writer writes it. This to me is more a character study than the suspense mystery aspect. I don't care about that...more about how this man got to this point and what can be done about it now. I actually get why JH accepted the part; this is more a challenge than the general regular rom/com protagonist. He's proven he can do that.

MOTW: Enjoy it and there is enough meat to keep it going but probably would have been a better paced drama at 16 episodes.

Dramas I am looking forward to but keeping expectations at a reasonable level: W and Scarlet Heart. Good weekend to all.

Hi Beanies, i hope everyone is ok and enjoying the beginning of the week end. The open thread on DB is sure the right place to be to relax or have fun.

I need some advices on buying dvd for someone (like me) living in Europe. What dvd version do you buy, especially for tvn's drama and what online store can you recommend except for YesAsia which i'm already familiar with?

It's been awhile since i didn't buy a korean drama box set, but after watching Signal i knew that i absolutely needed to own this show (i've already ordered the ost).

I've checked YesAsia, waiting impatiently for the release of the director's cut and i'm very surprised by the looks of tvn's drama boxsets.

It seems that they are very pricey (around 150EUR for the complete season), coded region 3 and without subtitles .

The first point is enough annoying but i can still manage it my love for the show makes it worth the price but the last two (i would be forced to buy a region free dvd player for a show i wouldn't understand ) are really discouraging.

I used to enjoy the malaysian versions of the drama i loved because of the quality of the english subtitles but on YesAsia they appear to be now only region 3.

What are your opinion on the singapore versions (by Poh Kim)?

It's disappointing that korean networks don't take their western audience into account when creating those boxsets, that would be and excellent way to associate us to the success of the drama since we can't contribute to the ratings.

After all the legal streaming sites exist for a reason, don't we deserve the same treatment that korean fans?

Thanks beanies for your help.

Poh Kim video quality is fine but may not work for your region - better check the region code before you buy. Be careful when buying some Malaysian ones as some of these may not be legal & quality differs. There used to be Speedy Videos which has offline stores in Malaysia and might sell online as well - this is definitely legal but might not be in your desired region code.

Thank you for your help.

For the TvN Boxsets that i researched (like Misaeng) or Oh My Ghostess, only the singapore version is coded all region.

So i don't think, i'll have much choice. But i'm worried about the quality of the subtitles and really dislike their packaging which look cheap for most of the drama (compared to the korean dvd).

I wouldn't mind at all paying more if only the quality of the translation and the absence of viewing restrictions could be guaranteed.

It's really not fair for the european viewers...

I've been thinking of buying the DVDs for Signal too, but it's been so long since I bought DVDs for dramas that I don't know there are so many things to look out for. What does the region code mean? So it won't play properly on certain DVD players? I'm sorry if my question sounds silly, I admit I'm a technology noob! And yikes, I never knew a box set could cost so much. Time to save up for it!

Hi Kaylie,

Your question is not silly at all: most of people buy dvd in their own country and never have to wonder about this question of codes.

DVD are indeed coded, based on the area in which they are sold. It's a question of rights: distributors want (rightfully) to preserve their sales margins since all films/tv shows are not released at the same time everywhere.

So they created 5 regions dvd codes (there's another code system for blu-ray based on the same principle).

You can find all the codes and the countries associated here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD_region_code

Europe is region 2, South Korea is region 3.

Those codes mean if you have a dvd player bought in one zone, it won't play dvd from another zone.
The only exception is the 0/free/all region players which can play dvd from any region and 0/free/all region dvd boxsets which can be played on any player, no matter the country.

So if you want to buy dvd from Asia, you have to be careful
and check the zone before ordering or buy a dvd player free region which will play any dvd.

Be aware too of the custom fees. They're not included in the price and are not the responsability of the seller. Depending on the value of the package, the custom authory can decide to block your order until you pay this additional cost.
Personally, i was never subjected to it when ordering from YesAsia, they must have a warehouse in Europe, but it takes ages (3 weeks -one month) for the package to be delivered.

I hope it helped.

Bad news just doesn't let up in these times, and this week is another of those. :(

I'm still on the Police Unit 38 train, and waiting for this week's episodes. Ma Dong-seok needs to be in everything, he's amazing. And Seo In-gook isn't far behind - he brings so much more than pretty to the table.

Also tried maybe half of the first episode of Uncontrollably Fond, but it's not a keeper - if I had one word for it, it would be 'meh'. The other would be 'disjointed'. What's happening to Lee Kyung-hee?

I hope someone is subbing the Good Wife.I really want to watch it.

Hi pogo,
Those two in Police Unit 38 really are awesome. There are times in this show that I get a Misaeng vibe. Anyone else?

I feel like any drama that makes an older actor and a younger one co-leads is going to be compared to Misaeng - and with good reason, that one set the gold standard on everything. That said, Jung-do and Sung-il's actual relationship is in almost every way the opposite of Misaeng. But I'm so looking forward to seeing it develop.

Hello Beanies! Happy Friday!

(Forget if I wrote about AOHY last OT.) Oh Hae-Young: What a great show! Didn't need the extension, but I adore HY/DK interactions so I didn't mind too much. The ending was satisfying enough. Overall, not my most favorite show ever, but one that I did really love and will remember very very fondly. :)

Lucky Romance: I'm getting tired of Bo-nui and her superstitions now. Su-ho better be okay and Bo-nui better not blame herself any more. Dal-nim and Ryang-ha thouh--SQUEE. These two are absolutely hilarious.

Gong Shim: This needed to be a 16 episode show, I think. The plot is just draaaaaagging which makes everything regarding the Jun-pyo secret so frustrating. I hate how the bromance has died, and I agree with other viewers that Gong Shim hasn't actually done anything regarding the birth secret plot. Still love this show, though.

Squad 38: I haven't caught up with last weekend's episodes, but I'm going to marathon episodes 5-8 after this weekend. Love love love it. Seo In-guuuuuuuuk!

Doctors: Eh, gonna drop this. Still will read the recaps, though.

Beautiful Mind: Seriously thinking of picking this back up. Everyone's praising the heck out of it and I did like the acting in episode 1, just thought things were a bit confusing, so I didn't continue. Now I think I might...

Wanted: Also going to drop this. The story's just so depressing and I'm not in the mood to watch a really heavy, dark show.

Uncontrollably Fond: From the recaps and the general public reaction, I'm not sure if this is one is for me. I'll see how I feel after reading more recaps.

And....... I am so excited for W - Two Worlds! SO EXCITED. I really hope we're not all disappointed. Also am going to try out The Good Wife. :)

Hello beanies, hope everyone is having a happy friday!

Just finished reading Me Before You- Jojo Moyes. Feel exhausted, with a headache, angry and sad, really sad. I didn't want Will to end his life like that, I wanted him to give Lou a chance, give them a chance, I know he was in constant pain, he was tired but he admitted himself that the six months with Lou were the best in his life, I wanted him to have that a little more, to give himself a little more time to experience that, I wanted him to try and be happy, happy with Lou. I just... I just.. UGH.. feel so frustrated and I can't seem to accept his decision. Some people call him selfish for that, I'm not sure if I feel that way about him, I just wanted him to let Lou love him, I know the writer gave us enough reasons to try and understand his choice but I just can't, DAMN IT I'm gonna cry again!!

Any good bubbly, funny romcoms to cheer me up, please!

Hi, Anna...

Late to the party, but I read your post.

After OHYA ended, I hopped on MOTW, and have been enjoying it tremendously. I think it's the first time I'm seeing Mr. Sparkly Eyes... what a cutie.

I just started BEAUTIFUL MIND this morning Sunday morning with the first two episodes. Had to fasten my seatbelt. JH never dissapoints... I blathered up above about other dramas I've been watching during OHYA Mania, any of them vintage and quite enjoyable.

Cheers!

I am still sticking with Mirror of the Witch..

But is it jus tme..or plot keeps moving in a circle.. there is no story, no progression...

I can't even recall which was the last episode with some meaningful development in the arc..

every time our heroine cries "why are you trying to kill me" ( I mean, get over it girl..they are going to kill you..so find ways to save yourself)...

some random things happen.. but i guess the cinematography is so amazing and that background score.. and the delicious villainous.. that i end up watching it anyway..

SO happy it will get over next week

I feel very brave for watching Mrs. Temper and Nam Jung Gi since I couldn't rely on recaps to tell me if it's good or not. It's sad how much I've relied on Dramabeans to pick and chose my dramas.

I like it so far. Mrs. Temper is awesome and I keep catching myself yelling "You go, girl!" at my screen. Nam Jung Gi was kind of annoying me at first. I really wanted him to grow a backbone, so it is nice to see how they are positively affecting each other. I'm only on episode 7, so we'll see how it goes from there.

I still think it's hilarious that this blog and the recappers bashing Doctors so much yet favoring a boring UF nor have issues with their acting. I guess you only care about the hot young actors...
It's so obvious and disgusting even you keep deleting the comments.
If you don't like the drama, drop it. With its popularity, it doesn't need you.
If you want to do it, be fair and nice!

I thought we were done with the bad guys..

But after current bad guy gets scammed..there is still his boss..some choi to go after..

so as far as development of the story goes, i can see where 38 is headed..

But man!.. the whole cast ensemble is soooo nice..

Honestly, I wasn't much impressed with IRY.. or maybe the hype got the better of it.. but I am really impressed with SIG in this one..

atleast the suave that he carries...i can't think of anyone else who has it..

Q: Is there a particular quality that you associate with your list of actors/actresses.. like if x trait is required... Y actor is the perfect match.. or if someone really stands out for something

SIG - suave
YAI - royalty ( its about his photo shoots too.. the way he sits, always chin up..entire demeanor)
LMH - action hero
KWB - bad guy to the T
LJK - the perfect guy

**************
ON the other note:
The good wife..is nailing it.. and can't believe I am able to accept nana in kalinda's character so seamlessly..

Nice .. doesn't disspoint

I'm bored to tears by the dramas I'm watching! I just can't believe all these interesting synopses could end up so bad. I'm watching both Wanted and Doctors, but I think I'm probably dropping both of them soon.

I'm convinced that a script can really make or break an actor. Kim Rae-won and Kim Ah-joong were both excellent in Punch. Who knew their acting could be so bland and unconvincing under another writer?

Wanted is just... weird. I can't connect with anyone. Why's everyone so mechanical and emotionless when a child has been kidnapped? Why isn't anyone responding to the ridiculousness of making a reality TV out of the search for the child? This isn't something that just happens in daily life, surely people need more convincing about the necessity of it, right? Where's everyone's moral compass? I don't even feel for KAJ's character when she begs or cries about her child. I just can't make sense of this drama.

Similar case for Doctors. Dialogues are extremely weird and unnatural. I don't understand the characters' motivations. I don't find Ji-hong to be charismatic or funny, and his cheerfulness seems very forced. Most importantly, what's with his nonchalant attitude when Seo-woo confessed her feelings for him? As a teacher I think he honestly hasn't handled his relationships with his students very well.

I'm reminded of an old Korean drama Romance, where Kim Ha-neul was a high school teacher and Kim Jae-won was her student who was in love with her. It's similar to Doctors, but it was much more moving. Good script-writing really matters a lot.

I dropped Wanted after 2 episodes, I am not sure why.. but after reading your comments I think that must be the reason, the emotionless aspect of it.

Glad that I didnt pick up Doctors, even if I love KRW in Punch.

So late to the OT again! I haven't actually posted for months, since by the time I've read all the other comments and have time to post, it's already Saturday!

Last week there were an amazing discussion here regarding plot, both western and eastern approaches to it. (Thank you for that!) I found this fascinating as I had just finished watching the K-movie "Gyeongju". Seriously, it was beautifully filmed, but I really couldn't figure out what the writer and director were trying to do. I felt a little better when I read in interview of the actors in which they admitted that at times they weren't sure either. Then I read your plot discussion, and it did help me understand the storytelling style. But, after all that, I still can't really make heads or tails of the ending! Has anyone else here seen it? Specifically, I would like to know who the three gentlemen in the teahouse were in the last scene. Was one of them the main character without his glasses? And why the discussion about his possibly being gay? And what did he do at the river? So much themed around suicide, but I wasn't sure if he killed himself or not. Probably one of the most frustrating movies I've watched. I feel like I should watch it again to figure out the answers for myself, but frankly, I'm not that into self-torture!

I also watched the ending of OHYA, and am watching BGS and LR as well.

I also marathoned Que Sera Sera last week, since I was curious about Eric's other work, and it was highly recommended by girlfriday. So, so good! Complex, flawed characters in a morality tale of narcissism, cynicism and love. And Eric's face looked much more chiseled, and well, hungry; just like his character. I loved it.

I posted my comment this week. And then went up to join the conversation. By the time I got back down to my comment there were replies. So I'd answer and live my life for a few hours. Then I'd check back. I think I've been here 5 times over the day.

I regress. My point is, post early to get it out of the way and you might have more time for the convo. At least that in my experience from my two visits to OT, last week I didn't and didn't talk much. This week I posted first and had a lot of conversations and replies.

@newgirl,

Kim Yoonmi is the person who so graciously explained Mugyo/indigenous Korean shamanism, Dream Record, and Kishotenketsu, in OT #453 and OHYA ep. 16 and later -- and maybe earlier, too. Do take a look for them. OHYA employs these elements, as does MOTW... A valuable resource for Kdrama viewers looking below the surface of plot and characterization.

After reading several of the posts, I understood why the film TURNING GATE confused the heck out of me. I could say the same thing re: BLOSSOM AGAIN, which I watched because Kim Young-Jae was terrific as the paranoid king of Gaya in THE KING'S DAUGHTER, SU BAEK-HYANG. Another of his earlier films, ONE MORE STEP TO THE SEA was relaxed and slice-of-life-ish, and more accessible for me.

Hope this helps. ;-)

I had started Lucky Romance when it came out but wasn't drawn in by the first two episodes. Because I wanted something else to watch with the main female lead, I chose Secret. No regrets. Both leads nailed their performances. I loved it. The only other two dramas I have seen with these leads, respectively She Was Pretty and Entertainer (both weren't great plot-wise but the actors did great jobs). As seeing them together in Secret was spectacular, would I like their other drama together, Kill Me, Heal Me? At the time it aired, I was not in the mood to watch it.

Now I have returned to Lucky Romance and suddenly it was much easier to get through the first six episodes. I appreciate it, and find the male lead just adorably dorky. I am planning to catch up with the rest soon.

I'm trying to watch Secret and I think I got as far as ep...4? I can't remember now. I guess I'm so used to the production style of the newer dramas, so couldn't really get into Secret because of that (and also because of the plot, which I thought took a while to take off).

Is it worth the watch?

So, correct me if wrong..

Just started watching school 2013 and that eventually landed my research on high kick reviews on the internet..

Didn't know about this series..

High Kick- season 1 came out in 2006..and was apparently a huge hit.. and thereafter has had 2 more seasons..

Typical format followed is..someone narrating from the future..and wife hunt on the side..

NOW, i thought Answer Me series were original concepts..seems not!!!

I understand that these series are more to do with the character interactions (all of us, our parents, stranger from across the world apparently are living the same life and same challenges since the world materialized..underlying emotions and conflicts are pretty similar) and the overall treatment of every episode..however can't deny the PLOT outline is the same..

Disappointing :(
