Ji-soo's just the representative name for rising young actors who've proven their acting chops at this point. I think we'd be equally happy if the drama cast someone like Shin Jae-ha or Kwak Dong-yeon, or (dreams coming true) Yeo Jin-gu.

and if tvN absolutely HAD to age the character up and cast a much-older idol actor opposite Kim So-hyun and swore to keep things platonic, they'd have been much better off with Yoon Doo-joon. At least he can act!

@pogo
As much as I want to see Yoon Doo-joon on my TV screen, his face can't be said as 17 :(
If not Ji-soo, can it be D.O.? I love him with Kim So-hyun in that Unforgettable movie, so if he does this drama, I'm definitely checking it out!

@Faith - I did mention that he'd be ok if they aged the character up - most definitely not otherwise.

Yoon Doo-joon certainly looks like age 17 was a long time ago for him, but that's not a bad thing given the roles he's taken so far. And he's definitely not the right candidate to play a high schooler (a college student, yes - but school, definitely not!)

0

D.O. Yes, what a great suggestion!!!!!!!

0

Why not cast Kim Heechan? He's a bright young actor, would fit the high school image and would look adorable with So-hyun

0

Yeah, but even if they aged up the characters, I still think that Kim So-hyun has a younger-looking face than Yoon Doo-joon, so they can't make this into a noona-romance anymore..

Required fields are marked *

I also said things should stay platonic, i.e. no romance at all!

0

Let me put it this way, if he was playing her actual oppa, I'd be ok with it. But NOT with a romance, not at this age anyway.

0

Yeah, that's what I was thinking too. So now, let's just hope that he will not accept this role, or he will get a minor role that has no business whatsoever romancing Kim So-hyun. I'm still hoping for either Ji-soo, D.O. or Lee Hyun-woo.

@Holly
Haha, I like him too. With that deep, deep voice of him, phew *fans overheating self before being ended up burned to death* but alas, he is now in Jackpot, and I'm not sure if he has the time to act in this one 'cuz I don't think I've ever seen actors doing back-to-back dramas in my short years of watching KDramas. So that's why I listed those three actors because they are the only ones that came to my head when I tried to think of still-quite-young actors who are free and available.

1

I loveeee kang chan-hee, his face totaly fit high school student, but I think he's too early to become a main lead.

errr, hopefully if taec accept this offer, his role no other than being a teacher? or her older brother? but big no for so hyun partner

I get what you are saying but let me just say this and don't take it the wrong way I am not mad at you comment :) As you might know he has been an actor since he was a little kid, he mainly did the younger counterparts of older main characters the same as KSH. So why I ask you was KSH ready for a lead role in 2015 when she was the same age as KCH but not him?? Heck tvN even gave Nam Joo-Hyuk his first acting role then right away after that he got a lead role and look where he is now.

It wasn't too early for Kim Sohyun last year, and it's not too early for Kang Chanhee this year. Male and female actors should be treated the same way.

0

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, I'm tired of seeing the same faces. KSH is a good actress but even so, I'm not that psyched about her casting simply because I feel like I've seen her in almost every highschool related drama in the past year. Seeing her AND Ji Soo again would be overkill.

I agree, I'm tired of seeing the same faces. KSH is a good actress but even so, I'm not that pysched about her casting simply because I feel like we've seen her in too many things recently. Having her AND Ji Soo together again would be overkill.

That's why I want Kwak Dongyeon this time to play the male lead. I think it will be very different vibe. I'm curious the elegant, proper, and badass Kim Sohyun acting against awkward, clumsy, quirky Kwak Dongyeon.

0

I'm asking this out of curiosity: can't her parents have a say in who she is acting with, since she's still a minor? And by that I mean who her romantic lead could be, if they go there. They don't have any power whatsoever, do they?

0
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

It probably depends on what her contract says. After all her parents would've had to sign it and they may have given up that right (knowingly or unkonwingly). The agencies are sadly pretty almighty, even with underaged actors/singers/etc they're usually higher in the hierarchy than parents.

I do hope they haven't waived that right though and will somehow be able to veto in these kind of situations. Age gaps are fine, but not when one of them is underaged.

I hate, hate, HAAAAAATE it too. They expect us to either believe a grown-ass man is a teen or to think it's cute for a grown-ass man to romance a teen. Eww.

Especially egregious for this drama considering that a 17 year old boy-19 year old girl dynamic will be vastly different from a 25 year old man-19 year old girl dynamic. Ghost girl is supposed to be recapturing her teens, so what the hell is that grown ass man doing around her???

Required fields are marked *

Agreed. But part of the problem is casting directors keep thinking underage girls are OK to cast as love interests in romances. I get that they're good to great actresses, but they either need to pair them with around the same age actors or wait for them to grow up....

0
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

This is like the whole "JLaw, Emma Stone, etc" dilemma in Hollywood, pairing 20+ actresses with actors who are as old as their fathers. I don't for one hot minute believe that there are no good young actors out there, they are there, waiting for their break, it's just that casting directors and production staffers seem to be thirsty and vicariously living their fantasies casting barely legal girls as 30+ women and putting them together with waaaaay older men. It's disgusting!

But Korea took it one step further to squick by doing pairing underage actresses with grown men. Becauee they're "only" a decade older. Hahah, that totally makes it better. Fan-fucking-not-tastic.

0

@genki - Hollywood has been pairing barely legal/20something actresses with much older actors for a long time, right from the days of Audrey Hepburn.

I remember Scarlett Johansson's career starting to take off when she was 18-19, her most high-profile projects always paired her with men 10-25 years older than her. And it was doubly creepy since she was so overtly sexualised because of the way she looked.

0

@pogo I know they were, but it's only beginning to be talked about now, and those for the status quo always rationalize it by claiming there are no young actors of the same caliber as the young actress. And that's just BS. To use a Scarlett Johansson example, they already had age-appropriate Chris Evans with her in the MCU, but noooooo, they hooked her up with Mark Ruffalo. If they weren't going for the comics canon anyway, why go with that instead of the alternative??

Creepy ass Hollywood and now creepy ass Korea are ruining my entertainment experiences. If I had known it was going to be this big a problem, I would've gone he casting director career path to fight it!

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

I really didn't like the Black Widow/Hulk part of Age of Ultron but that was more because it was poorly developed and came out of nowhere, than because of the actors' ages - Johansson was 30 by then, mature enough to play opposite an older leading man if needed. Still doesn't excuse the creepiness surrounding her early adulthood though (same goes for Keira Knightley, she was 19 and always getting cast with much older men post-Pirates :/)

I also love the fact that Steve and Natasha have a close friendship that is just that - if I was expecting anyone to be a possible love interest for her, it was the Winter Soldier (especially since the Winter Soldier trailers trolled us by hinting at it).

But even Hollywood is generally more mindful about casting actual underage girls opposite older actors - in Korea it seems to be ok for productions to cast middle and high schoolers opposite men twice their age and then go 'well she's very mature, it's all good!' even as literally anyone who hears of it (Korean or foreign) says NO.

0

Hollywood's age-gap casting is problematic as well. It's not as creepy as this Korean trend involving underage actresses, but there's something very wrong with casting very young women into 30/40 year old roles and passing over extremely capable actresses of the actual age while men get to take age-appropriate roles--or play younger! It's also not cool that female actors are only considered love interest material up to a certain age, adding insult to the fact that they're sexualized way too early.

It's not caused by a lack of young male actors or mature female actors (there are plenty!), there's some twisted, ageist male fantasy with a side helping of unrealistic standards of female beauty here. Female actors are given an extremely short shelf life while male actors are considered viable until well past the point that they have literally turned gray. (I'm not even getting into how Hollywood has a lack of substantial female roles to begin with.)

(I know I went off-tangent the drama casting issue here, but they're interlinked, so please bear with me. The mindset responsible for Hollywood age-gap casting is related to the Korean underage casting--there's double-standard at work.)

Ultimately, it would be nice to see actors age gracefully. By that, not just let the female actors take the roles for their ages, rather than shunting them aside for ever younger girls (and have the male actors do the same, rather than take younger roles), but let the teen actresses stay young. Don't have them grow up too fast! Don't be so excited to push them into adult roles. (Looking at Yoojung and Saeron especially!) And keep them with age-appropriate actors, for Pete's sake! Let the teen actors age into their craft and get their roles, than pass them over for these grown men! Let male actors grow--don't give us 30 year-old high schoolers or 30 year-old grandfathers!

P.S. I'm actually a Clintasha fan, but Steve-Natasha was the best alternative, IMHO--visually and plot-wise.

0

consider everything you said, co-signed (except maybe the part about Natasha's love interests, I really like the idea of her/Steve but the idea of Winter Soldier/Black Widow excites me more, even if we never see it) .

Hollywood may be less extreme than the current casting trends in Korea but it's still a place where 32-year-old Oscar winners get passed over for roles because the marketing suits want a 25-year-old Oscar winner instead. And where a 38-year-old woman is considered "too old" to play the wife of a 56-year-old man. And women still get paid so much less than their male costars despite carrying films with their star power.

But the thing I'm seeing in Korea is that the current generation of 30something actresses (born in/after 1979) are going as strong as ever - it's the girls currently in their twenties who have been steadily shut out of lead roles, and as a consequence the only young actresses who are recognisable names got that way because they were literal child actresses. I blame idol casting for that.

this is almost worse than the Yoon Shi-yoon/Kim Sae-ron pairing. Worse because he has proved pretty much repeatedly over the years that he has no business being an actor.

Seriously, what are casting directors these days on, and why are they pairing up underage girls with men 10+ years older than them?

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

Exactly. At least Yoon Shi-yoon is a talented actor making his long-awaited army comeback. If you break down Mirror of the Witch, the parts themselves are all great. It's just when you put it together that it becomes iffy. Even then, at least it's a saguek with a fantasy premise that may actually support the odd casting or at least distract from the more romantic aspects of the story.

Here, the casting makes no sense because it goes actively against the premise description. And, I mean, this is a tvn romcom so I'm actually looking forward to, well, the romance and chemistry. But, as soon as this confirms, I won't anymore, that's for sure.

Taecyeon being in consideration for this role at all despite his having basically negative levels of acting ability, is a classic example of the entitled mindset I've mentioned among crappy acting-idols.

He's been acting for the better part of a decade now and his acting is the kind only a fangirl could love, he isn't even fit for major supporting roles and yet here he is, up for lead in a drama for which he is completely inappropriate in every way - age, acting ability, image, literally nothing fits. At this stage in his career, he's not being forced by his agency or anything of the sort - this is him scrambling for relevance despite likely knowing full well that his struggle acting would never make the grade.

aged up or no, it is insanely inappropriate that they could even think this pairing was a thing that should happen, considering Kim So-hyun's age.

That's so disgusting, how the Powers that Be in entertainment justify their creepy ass fetish of casting teen girls with grown men by going "oh, she's mature for her age anyway," (and "oh, he's so youthful anyway). Girls (I'm talking in general terms now) are always expected to grow up too fast and to be aware that the world already see them as women and to be careful, robbing them of the tail-end of their childhood. IRL, as long as a girl is in her teens, she's considered fair game to men (even though it's illegal) but it's (rightfully) weird for women to look at teen boys that way.

Films/shows that put together teen girls with adult men only normalizes this sick societal double standard. I'd step off my soapbox but... I really don't want to. These things need to be said!

I don't know if schadenfreude is the word for it because the people harmed by this narrowmindedness and greed are the very people I want to see succeed - twentysomething actresses and young actors.

Schadenfreude would be what I'd feel if every single crappy idol-starring drama out there did a giant belly flop and people rejected them en masse because of the poor acting, finally prompting network heads to ask 'what went wrong?' instead of the current handwringing over 'there are no early 20s actresses for us to hire!' which is a lie because there are, they're just all stuck in supporting roles and if they end up with one failed drama they're basically sent to the dungeon and not given any more shots at lead.

And acting is NOT part of that lane. Acting, for him, is basically a guaranteed route to a trainwreck.

Lee mino (1993), yoo-seung-ho, lee hyun woo, Ji soo, or Choi woo sik (wait how old is he again !) would do great I think.

Woosik is a 90er, so 2 years younger than Taec and 9 years older than Kim Sohyun. I think he's also a bit too old for her, but he can still pass off as 95er looks-wise.

its the first time I'm seeing everybody wholeheartedly rejecting an actor like this. it is a thumb down from everybody.........is he really that bad. i havnt seen him in anything. but i thought he is some big name out there.
i just checked wiki and he is only 27.
is this the love for the actress or the hate for the actor or has he done some terrible karma out there???? somebody plzz reply

I mean the fact that he's going to be playing a 17 yr old when he's 27 (he doesn't look 17 AT ALL btw) and the fact that kim so hyun (who is playing an age appropriate character) is like 11 years younger than him.... not to mention this guy had chances to be lead in dramas and his acting is still not good.It just makes like zero sense to cast him when there are slew of talented young actors out there.

If it is, it's disproportionate retribution, given the trend of "off" castings there have been lately, either age-inappropriate or downright terrible.

This takes the cake though, age-inappropriate and terrible. Give us a break, drama gods!

I'm no bread expert - I mean, I bite, I chew and I swallow my bread, that's about it - but I'm sure the role must be physically grueling...our poor Taec would have to go through the soft to hard journey like MULTIPLE times a day. 16 episodes...OMG how many times would he have to go in the oven? Can you imagine how claustrophobic it must be, filming ALL your scenes in an oven? Not to mention the heat..!!

Taec's a really versatile actor...he's in all those hit dramas, but people tend to overlook his roles. That flagpole in DOTS? That was him. The bench in "Cheese in the Trap?" Taec again. And his latest, most awesome acting coup, in "Neighborhood Lawyer Jo Deul-ho", he plays the neighborhood.

It was hilarious imagining him as the bread as crazy as that image is(can't get any crazier than the title). I actualy really liked Taecyon in Dream High and was wondering what all the fuss was re: his acting, well, except for that confession/kiss scene.

I choose to be optimistic. I think I saw a ray of hope in Wonderful Season and if he's improved only by a baby step or two, I'm pretty sure I'm actually able to watch it.

0

Required fields are marked *

+1 I agree he was bearable in Wonderful Season. But in 'Who are you?' he was just awful. Had no chemistry with So Yi Hyun and his dialogue delivery made me cringe so hard.

But irrespective of whether Taec is a good actor or not, I think it's grossly unfair to cast such an old actor in a drama supposed to be featuring teenage characters. Kim So Hyun needs a much younger hero no doubt. I'm thinking Kwak Dong Yeon from Modern Farmer, so adorkable.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

Kwak Dong Yeon would be purrfect, both acting and age-wise, I totally support this idea. Plus I haven't seen him in anything after MF and miss him loads, so there, but I have a feeling that dramagods are blind and for some reason, bent on casting a waaay much older actor instead, so I'm embracing myself for the inevitable. I do hope that there are some enlightened knetizens who'll knock on dramagods hearts that pairing teenage girls with very very adult men is simply not OK. Perhaps it won't happen now, but hopefully in the future.

YES! there is still hope..
I hope he (or his agency) realises that he's not fit for that role age wise, or even look wise and rejects the offer...
That would be the best possible scenario or if not, maybe knetz can do something about this and throw a huge fit to get him outta there lol. I mean, they've done it a few times, surely they can do it again?
(not sure how the response in Korea is though on Taek's casting)

0

haha yeaa i hope he realises to !! its a bit awkward for viewers watching him have a romantic relationship with such a young girl! Yeaaa, knetz usually have a lot of voice/power in these drama castings LOL.

I watchd adolescence medley recently,so I am absolutely aware of what you're talking about. He basically carried the drama, have to say he definitely acts better than most of the actors of his age,it's a bummer that 'actor's are never thought of,whenever any bigger production is on helm, idols are somewhat always given more priority,it's really upsetting.Kwak Dong Yeon would have been a very good choice over taecyeon, any day. It's sad that he's almost double ksh's age,or a lot older than KSW for that matter, but yet,I don't see any growth in his work.Hope the production will take a second look over the casting decisions being made.
