Dongha passes on MBC’s I’m Not a Robot, Hwang Seung-eon offered second lead role
by tipsymocha
Boo, I was looking forward to this pairing. Dongha (Suspicious Partner) has officially turned down his offer to star in MBC’s upcoming I’m Not a Robot, while Chae Soo-bin (Strongest Deliveryman) is still considering the lead role in the show. On a more positive casting note, Hwang Seung-eon (Man Who Dies to Live) has been offered a supporting role in the show.
The producers haven’t announced that they’ve offered the lead role to any other actor yet, but I do hope that they’ll go in the same vein and give an actor who hasn’t been a leading man before a chance. Personally, I’m kinda put out that Dongha has passed on this opportunity, since I’ve enjoyed his past performances as memorable supporting characters (see: Chief Kim, Three Days), and I think he would’ve done a great job with the role.
The character description actually vaguely reminds me of Yeon Woo-jin’s character in Introverted Boss, if his shyness had been the result of a physical condition: The lead character is a director at a large finance firm who barely leaves his castle-like mansion due to his allergy to humans. Even his assistant isn’t really aware of his goings-on and the shut-in is the subject of fear among his employees. One day, he suddenly falls in love with a robot, although, it doesn’t appear that the roles Chae Soo-bin nor Hwang Seung-eon are up for are that robot, so that love may not be the endgame.
Chae Soo-bin, should she accept, is up to play a passionate, competitive youth with an inner feminine side that no one ever sees. She has an IQ of 94, but makes up for her lack of smarts with an athleticism that barely gets her into university. Her father is a car mechanic, so she’s able to tell the make of a vehicle just by the sound of its engine, and is also handy with tools. I like her already.
The character Hwang Seung-eon is up to play, of course, is pretty much Chae Soo-bin’s opposite. She’s the object of the male lead’s first love, and a team leader at his finance firm, with beauty, smarts, and a bright, transparent personality to match.
The producers have some time yet to fill their lead male role, since the MBC strike might force the station to push I’m Not a Robot’s premiere to November instead of the original October date, following currently airing Hospital Ship. In the meantime, I’m going to think hard at MBC that a certain Woo Do-hwan will be available very soon…

It's a smart move really. This drama isn't going to be a hit due to the sheer fact the leading lady has been in two starring roles this year already. Audiences get exhausted with seeing the same face repeatedly, especially when they don't really knock it out of the park.
Rather than getting stuck in a flop project, it's probably better for him to find another role that'll allow him to flex his acting muscles without too much responsibility for the show's success. Another supporting role wouldn't be a bad idea. His role in Suspicious Partner was actually pretty good, but it's also evident he's not quite at the level to lead a drama.

She "knocked it out of the park" in Rebel for me and many other viewers. She gained a lot of love for that. She's good in Strongest Deliveryman too, though the role hasn't brought out a performance to rival that one. I personally think she's too talented to deserve flack for securing her leading lady status when there are still plenty of inexperienced actors getting leads all the time.
I'd say the unorthodox premise would be the bigger reason why it might not be a mainstream hit without a more buzzy cast.

It's late but I agree with this, I don't understand why self proclaimed experts sitting in some other country are deciding they know better how to manage her career and shouting at people in the comments and behave as if CSB personally is stealing roles from the mouths of other new actors.
I saw Rebel only recently and I agree, she is really good, it's a good thing if she does more acting roles and builds experience. It's better than just disappearing and losing your hot topic status after a drama like some people do, her leading status is not that solid yet, she has to keep it up.

It's surprising he turned down his first chance to be a leading man, and on a major TV channel at that. Makes me wonder if the script turned him off taking the role or maybe he feels like he isn't ready to take on a leading role yet. Either way, it's a very surprising move from an up and coming actor.

Even Minah rejected her role. Its either both of them were humble or the script really sucks.
Anyway I read too Seung Ho has been offered the role so maybe a buzzy cast would save the drama. Like how it did for Ruler.

The fact that even Minah turned down the role worries me. Idol actors almost never turn down a role unless the script is beyond saving or they have a comeback and Girls Day doesn't have a comeback so it must be the former. Please don't take this Seung Ho! This sounds like a disaster!

Ji-sung took Kill Me Heal Me's offer after so many actors turned it down and he was the last choice, and see what this drama did to his career. Hwang Jung-eum as far as I recall wasn't the first one was offered for female lead either, if I'm not mistaken it was first offered to rookie actress that time Lim Ji-yeon. We also thought it would be a disaster but it was the opposite.
Bear in mind that usually actors only get a synopsis and maybe script for few first epi, and they don't even know what will happen later. If they know the full scripts, do you think Yoo Seung-ho and Kim So-hyun would do something disaster like Ruler?

I don't think Seung Ho can afford to disasters in a row. As a fan I understand the concern. The odds of it turning out like KMHM are too small. I'm worried too.

I am in the minority when I say I enjoyed Ruler. I definitely would not have enjoyed it nearly as much if Yoo Seung-ho wasn't in it, as he made the drama for me. It started slow for me and had some weird plot turns, but overall I enjoyed it.

"maybe he feels like he isn't ready to take on a leading role yet. "
If this is true, he deserves my respect for that. I wish many other actors with mediocre acting will have the gut to do the same. I think there's nothing wrong to turn down the lead offer because not every actor feel a need to become leading man, although it is definitely a brave move.

yeah, I'm wondering about the script myself. But if he really did a Kang Ha-neul and turned it down for either of those reasons (script/not feeling ready), he has my respect.
I don't mind young actors taking their time to move into lead roles, look at Im Shi-wan (even if TKL isn't great) and Park Hyung-shik.

Im Shi-wan really has my respect for improving the way he did. I think an actor/director once commented that Im Shi-wan would never be an actor because of how stilted his acting was early on, i.e. Moon embracing the Sun. To see how far hes come from that to his role in TKL (being another segeuk) is just nothing short of amazing.

Not sure why you have a bee in your bonnet about the fact that she's been lead in two dramas this year, they're very different roles and she's been really good in both of them (there are Korean articles/netizen comments specifically singling her out as a promising young actress so the domestic audience clearly isn't tired of her yet).
Besides, Strongest Deliveryman isn't even a prime time drama, I don't get the issue.

There are also Korean articles and comments singling out how they're not impressed by her. Ridiculous of you to try and use such reasoning as an argument. My comment wasn't malicious so the better question is why you seem so defensive.
And what I said is obvious. No one hits it big when they're saturating the audience. Roles feel familiar and the audience has no reason to anticipate you. She's far from being a great actor, and even they tend to be aware of these pitfalls. Taking any old project that comes your way is idiotic.

Maybe he is just tired. He has been in back to back dramas. While I would have loved to see him in a leading role, he turned this down for a reason. Maybe the writing is terrible even? Who knows. I am sure with his talent we will see him in a leading role soon enough.

I want to watch him again, but I get why not.
1. I love the fact that MBC always takes risks, however most of the dramas fizzle out before they can live their potential.
One of them was Missing 9, which Kang HaNeul rejected even if it was supposed to be his first lead role.
2. There is the Seo Kang Joon drama about robots that will premiere in winter on kbs, so that shows it's not the most popular of themes (cause come on, SKJ as a lead in a pre-produced 1 year after Entourage?? It feels like that guy gets used to try the best way to lose money)
3. Probably the script was meh, or his character was not something he could identify with.
4. He's tired and will not do a drama for now :D
As for Woo Do Hwan, isn't that guy starring in Mad Dog right after Manhole ends?
Probably can't do this one because the times are too strict, however I would love to see him in a drama in Dec-Jan :P
DongHa does not worry me. The guy clearly knows how to pick good roles, and is making his portfolio praise-worthy, instead of going after lead roles like a *cough idol cough* would do.

Wait I just got a whiplash. I totally wanted to comment that I hope Yoo Seung-ho would take this up because him and Chae Soo-bin would be so beyond adorkable but then I read the comments that said he's apparently considering??
That would be the first time I've had a fantasy casting in my head be fulfilled lol. Anyway whether it's true or not, I do hope Seung-ho can do something more fun and rom commy instead of that MBC drama. With all their union issues, is rather YSH not be affected. Also, as much as I love melo, I think he can do with something more fun for once.
Anyway, I digress. The synopsis sounds ordinary tbh, but almost all rom coms do so execution is important.

Woo Do-hwan already accepted Mad Dog which will be aired on October,so no chance for this which is better for me. Now, Yoo Seung-ho is in talk to fill in as a male lead role. If he acccepts, maybe it is a smart move from MBC. But.. this guy seems to be so young to be director at a large finance firm.
It's a pity for Dong-ha to decline this drama, but I guess he might prefer to do secondary characters for now. Leading a drama will give an actor extra burden, especially on rating. He is not the first one to decline a lead offer anyway. There's nothing wrong with that although it is a brave move for a rising actor.

So Woo Do Hwan is confirmed for Mad Dog? After DB post the article, some other blog had Gong Myung so it was a little confusing.
I feel Woo Do Hwan can play anything although he's only 25 so he wouldn't be a bad fit for this drama except that I prefer him to be in Mad Dog.
Although Yoo Seung Ho is about the same age, he looks way younger. He looked like a schoolboy in suit in Remember, hardly convincing as a rookie lawyer, let alone a director in a large firm.

He confirmed and they already had the first script reading (based on Asianwiki). Gong-myung on the other hand joined tvN drama with Choi Si-won. Yes that's what I meant too, I prefer to see him in Mad Dog, because MD sounds more intriguing at least on paper.
I wonder what the male lead's role age is, because if he is supposed to be 30, he looks too young for it. Err a director of a largeee finance firm can't be so young let say 24 or 25, or maybe his family owns this firm so..

I don't know why he turned down the lead role, if it's because of bad writing, I kinda don't want any of my fav actors to do this drama if it's gonna flop. But if it's because of other reasons, then I kinda want them to cast Song Jae Rim since it's been a while since his last drama project.

Song Jae-rim will look cool and charismatic to play a director, but if this kind of role requires a lot of nuance and subtle acting (more or less like Yeon Woo-jin's role in IB) then it could be a bit difficult for him. I saw him in some drama, while he is serviceable in some role, his acting isn't the type to play kind of complicated role, assuming this male lead role is kinda complex.
I heard he has a role /special appearance in Park Bo-young-Kim Young-kwang's movie but not sure the details.

Why is Yoo Seung Ho being offered a role a rookie actor turned down? It's really such an insult! The senior actor should get first preference. Why is MBC taking my boy for granted. I don't want him to do either of their dramas after this! And I'm a little sick of seeing CSB as leading lady. I like her but 3 full length dramas in a year screams desperate. I'm pretty sure she's not begging anyone for these roles LOL. What it seems to me is more like, she's become higher in demand, and she's striking while the iron is hot. Rebel wasn't the first leading role she was offered. She was offered a solo lead in Solomon's Perjury but turned that down and did Rebel instead. I think it's mostly that she's passionate about acting. She did Moonlight, a web series, a play with freaking Jo Jae Hyun, Rebel, If We Were a Season, and Strongest Deliveryman all in less than a year. She doubled-tripled her resume in a very short amount of time and we see results. She's not a star just yet, but she went from being a no-name to a fairly well-known actress in a year, and she certainly didn't achieve it sitting at home.

yeah, like..... after all these years of godawful/mediocre idol-actors getting lead roles right and left, we're seriously complaining that a talented young actress is working more? Turning down Solomon's Perjury to do Rebel was an incredibly gutsy move, but it paid off for her.
And at least she's using her time to actually act (as in, her JOB) instead of using media play to shoot dozens of adverts/CFs (which are far more ubiquitous on Korean tv/print media than two dramas would ever be, and far more annoying). She's won her first leading roles off skill, not PPL/popularity, and that is an achievement.

Look at Gong Seung Yeon. You don't see her running off to do ten thousand lead roles despite the fact she must be getting offers in spades. Yet she's extremely popular, well liked and has a steady stream of endorsements. With GSY no one thinks that she'll take on whatever is thrown her way but CSB is at a point where you just know she'll take on whatever XYZ drama is given to her. She hasn't rejected anything in the longest time and I can see the unhappy comments from knetz about her presence in every third drama. I don't want that for CSB. She's about to wear out her on screen presence.

She takes on the same number of roles as Chae Soobin actually - Introverted Boss, Circle, My Only Love Song and then the robot drama with Seo Kang Jun. But I don't see anyone saying they are sick of her. Granted, she's only second lead in IB and MOLS was actually filmed in 2016.

September 12, 2017 at 12:54 AM
Erm if I was a fan I would love to see my favorite actress in more dramas except if I didn't like the other actor cast against her. GSH also took whatever role thrown at her, see introvert boss, and couple other dramas before circle. It's upsetting that CSB, who's an actor and passionate about it, is getting flak for doing more roles, whereas idols get cast for super popular writers and ruin the dramas, without ever getting blamed.
Rebel had quite good ratings, and SDM still is doing quite good, considering the drama airs at a late night slot. To add, it would be absurd to blame a sole actor for success or failure of a drama. I would rather blame the writer or the plot for a drama's poor delivery. I'm sure dong ha felt the same and opted out. Or maybe he was offered another role. Whatever the cause at least CSB is a way better actress than the idols, and dare I say GSY you mentioned. Though circle was quite exceptional, I had a hard time connecting to her crying sequences and it showed at serious scenes that she's still quite green.
Also might be off topic, but I like actors more when they do down to earth roles. Lee Min Ho once used to appear in more projects, and now he's apparently too big to do small projects like "personal taste". I think as long an actor is able to do his job properly, he/she can't be criticized, unless one doesn't like that particular actor. Seo Hyun Jin also did another oh young, romantic doctor Kim and now temperature of love back to back, and it worked for her benefit. So I don't get how CSB is at fault here.
Mona
September 12, 2017 at 1:35 AM
There is a difference between doing some small side roles and then doing a lead role and doing lead roles back to back. At most she should do 2 dramas a year but three is too much. Plus a drama special and a web drama. And CSB still doesn't have any major endorsements or fan meetings or anything. SHJ at least became a Hallyu star after OHAY and cemented her status after RDTK.
She's not doing back to back dramas since ToL is coming a good 6 months after her prev drama.

Sounds quite back to back to me lol. I don't know honestly what's your point anymore. You say 'she should do 2 dramas a year '. Is there any rule written that she can't do otherwise? If you don't like the actress then that proves that maybe that's your beef with it. But apart from that, I don't see any reasoning in this. Just cause romantic doctor is a hit drama, she still has the right to appear in another drama and CSB doesn't, I don't know what's the logic behind that. CSB still is lot younger than SHJ and any young actress would wanna act in more project and practice her repertoire. Also like I said, her role in rebel was a memorable performance , and same goes for SDM. Before she has only played negative characters and a simple girl in Bluebird's house. So SDM clearly made people notice her, hence the casting calls. Like how LSK got for weight lifting fairy. Having said that, I rest my case here. :)

September 12, 2017 at 2:22 AM
Fay17 that's a good 8 months. I don't know how you do your math. But the gap between CSB dramas has been only 2-3 months at the max. It will also wear her out and this charac sounds too similar to her current drama character. I like CSB but she's already getting typecast and I don't want her too come across as an actress that does anything that is handed to her. Even PSH wasn't this quick to take on roles when she was building her resume. She would wait 6 months between projects. If CSB did a drama in Feb it would be fine but if she does this and another one early next year. That's almost 4 dramas back to back. Even Ji Soo wasn't this much although he only does side/supporting roles.

September 12, 2017 at 2:27 AM
Four months between the first two projects. Of course, you would skip that. Dramas come in every month, so it is possible that some casting director thought her fit for the character. And now you want her to do a drama exactly after six months. Like I said, let's agree to disagree. No point of discussion here anymore.

Why are you being Chae Soo Bin drama police, seriously an actress is acting, what's wrong with that? She's not going around like Jin Se Yeon who is crappy at acting and then doesn't even have the decency to finish one drama before starting another. Like someone said, she is doing acting projects and not going around posing for cfs like some people who can't act and whose only value to dramas is their looks and PPL.
And I am a Ji Soo fan but he had two dramas airing on tv at the same time last year, that was after he already did a drama short and a movie. Shin Hye Sun is doing 4 dramas including two 50 episode long dramas in 2016 and 17. Jang Dong Yoon from School 2017 also did 2 dramas as lead/second lead this year with just 4 months gap+ short drama with CSB and now a new project. as long as they manage it what is the problem? No one attacked them for working hard.

@mona I honestly think she should do as many dramas as she can while her popularity is on the rise. Once she has established herself as a bankable actress and has had a few hits under her belt, then she can choose to be picky about what she wants to do.
That is pretty much what a lot of actors are doing when they are new anyways. Look at Park So-dam being the super rookie and doing so many films/series back to back last year. The only reason we don't notice her as much is because she's involved with films as well as tv series. Whereas CSB has been more involved with series. Either way I think its smart of her to not be picky at this point in her career and do the dramas she feels she can put her 100% in and dramas that can teach/challenge her in some way. Later on she can pick and choose.

The only time Park Shin Hye did two dramas were in 2013 - FBND and The Heirs. She did not do a drama in 2010, 2012 and 2015; and only one per year in 2009, 2011, 2014 and 2016. So no, she did not take every drama that was offered to her.

PSD had changes of agency this year. For 3 months, she was free agent, so I don't think she can take it.

@apple Kim So Hyun only does one full length drama a year. In 2015 she did a number of projects but only two were major projects. WAYS and Pure Love, which she spent 3 months each shooting. Page Turner was a drama special and only took a week to shoot and Mystery Teacher was a web drama that never came on TV and also only took a week to shoot. The cameo in Princess Deokhye was shot in Jan 2016 and only took 2 days to shoot. She was only on the screen for 10 mins at most.
The cameo for Goblin also was just a 2 day shoot. One day in Oct and one day in Dec. Again on screen for less than 7 mins.

Dongha isn't a rookie though... sure, he wasn't a child actor but he's been acting since 2009. And his roles have been unconventional, he's a good actor. no need to downgrade him with false words.

No one is downgrading him but he is green compared to YSH. Who is a much more senior actor. It's not about being a child actor. It's like offering a role to LJS first and So Ji Sub second. There is a seniority that must be kept in mind before handing out roles.

Er, Chicago Typewriter was offered to Park Shin Hye and Seolhyun before it was given to Im Soo Jung.
Suspicious Partner was offered to Lee Sung Kyung before Han Ji Min and then Nam Ji Hyun.
I think producers just chose the ones they want first. If senior actors feel slighted, they can choose to reject the role.

I don't know about Seolhyun but CT was never offered to PSH. Her agency was very clear about that. It was just media play on CT's side. And seeing how poorly the show did it's understandable.
Nam Ji Hyun was a last resort for SP just like Hyeri is for Two Cops.

LOL the rule is simple - if you are sick of her, just skip this drama or pray hard you favourite oppas won't be casted so you don't have to watch it. I'm sick to see her in many drama too this year and she isn't among my favs either, but no one has any right to say she is desperate. This is unfair. She is building her career, what's wrong taking every opportunity she gets. If she takes a break before she solidify her spot in this industry, maybe there won't be a second chance in the future. We the viewers have plenty of drama choices to select, unfortunately for actors, not everyone of them can be so selective. Whether being picky and no job or just do whatever projects given. Even it is true Minah turned it down because of the script, she is an idol and acting is not her main career. While it is not the case for CSB.

"Screams desperate"? Harsh. How about "hard-working"? If your favorite flower boy took on three back-to-back projects I wonder what the reaction would be then.

Probably the same, honestly. The adage "too much of a good thing can be bad" is true any way you swing it.

Yeah, go to any post from last year when Ji Soo had 3 dramas...and I say this as a fan of him. There wasn't this kind of loud minority talking about how they were sick of seeing him and he took every drama he got offered.

People keep saying that Chae Soo Bin should be more picky but can she afford to? I remember Namgoong Min said he used to be picky which hurt his career, and he started to gain recognition after he became less choosy and start to take on more roles.
Only top actors like Park Bo Gum can be picky and reject 3-4 roles in a year. Chae Soo Bin has yet to reach that status but once she does, I am sure she wont appear so often any more. I remembered back in 2014 people complained about Park Shin Hye but now she's top tier, you can barely see her.

Yes my thoughts exactly. Right now its smart of her to choose as many dramas as possible while her popularity is on the rise. Once she has established herself as a bankable actress, she can afford to be picky then.

Love the mention of Namgoong Min's thoughts on his earlier carrier. That interview was so honest and eye-openning.
And I know I'm one of the poeple commenting about her taking too many roles but I'm honestly not holding it against her. It just makes it difficult for me to connect with her character and I have a very easy solution for it: I keep the drama for a later time and watch something else in the meantime.
Fighting to all the hardworking actors and actresses!

Namgoong min only really hit it big when he stopped being choosy about leading men romcom roles, and started playing other types of characters. I watched him in a large number of productions, and he was quite frankly boring. He only became really interesting when he played a pseudo villain in My Secret Hotel, and followed it up by playing villains in Girl Who Sees Smells and Remember.
I've nothing against CSB even if I'm not a fan of hers, but it's a far cry having minor roles/secondary roles in back to back projects; and being the lead actor of one. However I do understand the need to strike while the iron is hot, and no one can fault her for choosing to work. It's her bread and butter, after all.
If one is tired of seeing her, simply don't watch the drama, is all.

Oh yes Namgoong min was so boring to watch, he had zero screen presence. Its only after he decided to diversify and take other roles that he got so good at emoting! I honestly marvel at the transformation.

Very sad to know that he didn't accepted to be the main lead. But I hope there are other projects ahead. : )
Sometimes the problem is not even the script, sometimes the actor thinks that the project will not be successful in terms of rating. Because let's be honest, rating is not always synonymous of quality.
And most of the best quality shows always have a medium or bad rating. So what has enough rating brings more publicity to the actor and the team in general and of course comes the even financial recognition.

wow, I'm not "put out" but I am disappointed that he won't be in a lead role eminently. he was so excellent in Suspicious Partner. fingers crossed he's got something else up his sleve. I saw another post that this role has been offered to Yoo Seung Ho though instead.

Who cares if it a leading role. If it is not meaty enough to make a lasting impression, why rush just to get it.
It is far better to take it slow yet building a strong foundation. Dongha's last two roles are memorable — the bratty supervisor who cant accept his father's way of managing the business in Chief Kim, and his innocent yet purely evil character in Suspicious Suspect.
The glamour that the leading role brings is different, I know, from the satisfaction of delivering a good performance.
Let the man take his time. He maya have a lot of offers unheard off so he is simply trying to be choosy…
