School 2017: Episode 11

Today’s episode is all about dreams—sometimes a glimmer of hope, while at others, a heavy burden. As our characters juggle their dreams and desires with reality, they start to realize the pain of adapting to real life when things don’t go quite as planned. School 2017 really does feel like a show that has something for everyone, whether we’re here for the romance, the bromance, or the family feels, and this episode in particular is a fantastic balance of the complex emotions we’ve built up in our characters so far. If only they could see that they’re all struggling together.

EPISODE 11 RECAP

With their X hoods removed and identities exposed, Dae-hwi and Tae-woon glare unwaveringly at each other. When a security guard approaches, however, they’re forced to hide together in the music room and wait for him to pass.

Once they’re alone, Tae-woon grabs Dae-hwi and demands to know what’s going on. Dae-hwi explains that Hee-chan has found him out. When Tae-woon asks why Dae-hwi is pretending to be X, Dae-hwi snaps back that he just doesn’t want to be indebted to Tae-woon for covering for him with the math competition.

When Dae-hwi reminds him that Eun-ho is in danger because of him, Tae-woon worriedly asks how much Hee-chan knows about the situation. Dae-hwi notes that without evidence, he was probably just poking around for information. But even though Hee-chan was surprised when he showed up tonight, he says, Hee-chan is smart enough to figure out that he was lying about being X. When Tae-woon asks how long Dae-hwi has known the truth, he doesn’t answer. Tae-woon storms out.

Alone, Dae-hwi walks to the back of the school toward Tae-woon’s hideout. In flashback, we see that Dae-hwi had seen Tae-woon, Eun-ho, and Bo-ra leaving the hideout, where he’d heard them talking about Tae-woon being X. Oops.

In the present, Dae-hwi starts to open the door to the hideout… when it opens up from the inside. Tae-woon tells him to come in if he has something to say.

Inside, Dae-hwi looks around incredulously at Tae-woon’s hideout before he finally asks: “Is this because of Joon-ki?” At that, Tae-woon hides the framed photo of him with Joon-ki and Dae-hwi, snapping at Dae-hwi to shut up. But Dae-hwi knows the truth, and accuses Tae-woon of trying to make up for his and his father’s despicable behavior after the accident.

Tae-woon slams his fist into the wall, but Dae-hwi bulldozes on, arguing that Eun-ho is the one suffering now because of Tae-woon. He sarcastically notes that if things go awry, Tae-woon can always let her take the fall and slip out easily. Infuriated by Dae-hwi’s words, Tae-woon draws back a fist to punch him, but he holds back and takes his anger out on a chair instead.

Tae-woon snaps that the one hurting Eun-ho is Hee-chan, the person Dae-hwi teamed up with: “So how dare you worry about Eun-ho?” In return, Dae-hwi coolly suggests the obvious solution—he just needs to confess that he’s X. With that, he storms out.

Outside, Dae-hwi ignores a call from Hee-chan. Meanwhile, Tae-woon sits alone in the hideout, rereading Hee-chan’s text messages ordering him to meet, or else Eun-ho will get hurt.

Tae-woon storms into the classroom the next morning looking for Hee-chan, and finds him with Dae-hwi behind the school. As Tae-woon listens around the corner, Dae-hwi insists to Hee-chan that he’s the true X. Hee-chan snaps that there’s no way that a spineless sycophant like Dae-hwi could be the culprit, and demands to know why he’s trying to fool him. Hee-chan fixes Dae-hwi’s tie as he speaks, acting high and mighty. But Dae-hwi doesn’t cower, and says that he’s spent enough time around Hee-chan to know one or two of his weaknesses.

Dae-hwi asks why he’s chosen a powerless girl like Eun-ho to pick on, and Hee-chan replies that the reason is because he wants to remind her that she is powerless. At that, Dae-hwi asks dryly whether Hee-chan still shakes and stutters when he gets a call from his father, and this time he fixes Hee-chan’s tie as he warns that if Hee-chan tries anything, he’ll tell his father everything.

As Dae-hwi storms away, he catches sight of Tae-woon listening in. The boys stare at each other before silently going their separate ways.

Later that day, Eun-ho’s admirer approaches her with some chocolates and a love letter. To Tae-woon’s dismay, Eun-ho smiles sweetly as he asks her out to a movie. When Tae-woon tells the guy to buzz off, he asks why Tae-woon keeps following Eun-ho around when she hasn’t accepted his confession.

As soon as he leaves, Tae-woon starts badgering her: “A movie? You two stuck right next to each other in a dark place?!” Eun-ho ignores him and starts to open her package of chocolates, and Tae-woon chomps down and eats it whole, right out of her hand. LOL, replay.

As Eun-ho stares at him in horror, Tae-woon warns her not to go out with that guy. He asks why she won’t give him an answer, reminding her that he confessed to her first. Suddenly nervous, Eun-ho stammers that she’ll tell him when she finds the answer, and then scurries away.

Eun-ho’s classmates gather around the announcements regarding the school violence cases against Hee-chan and Bit-na. Arm-in-arm with Bo-ra and Sa-rang, Eun-ho grins as the students congratulate her, especially excited that Bit-na is getting her just deserts. When Bit-na walks by and sees the announcement, she glares at Eun-ho and deliberately slams into her as she passes. The girls just grin at each other, unperturbed.

Outside, however, the girls run into a stronger adversary: Hee-chan, who glares at them in condescension. Eun-ho suggests that he apologize now that the case results are out, but Hee-chan insists that he did nothing wrong. When Eun-ho wonders how it can be so hard to give a simple apology, Hee-chan says menacingly that Eun-ho has a talent for making a person think bad thoughts, and purposely bumps into her and Bo-ra as he passes.

At home, Hee-chan’s mother tells him not to worry and just focus on studying. She sighs that the reason he keeps getting second place is because he’s not trying hard enough. Oof. He reluctantly starts to agree as usual, but when she demands to know what more she could possibly do for him, Hee-chan spins around to confront her. To her shock, he asks in tears why she’s suffocating him, and why she makes it so that he can’t breathe.

Principal Park holds a faculty meeting, urging the teachers to create a clean and honest school. Cowardly Teacher Jang snaps at Teacher Shim for reporting her misconduct regarding Bo-ra’s school violence cases, but Teacher Shim just retorts that he’s sorry, but he’s not that sorry, heh. PE teacher Jung pointedly suggests that the school should start conducting performance evaluations for the teachers, and not just the kids.

Later that day, Teacher Shim invites a special guest reporter to give a lecture on dreams to his class. The reporter urges the students to find dreams that make them happy instead of ones that are safe. As the students applaud, Teacher Shim urges the students to think about their dreams.

In the hideout, Eun-ho gushes that the view count on her webtoon has reached thirteen, and fawns over the comments by user “niceguy.” Tae-woon smiles at her excitement, but bristles when Eun-ho calls niceguy a fanboy: “That’s so undignified. He’s a passionate reader.” Hahaha.

When Eun-ho casually calls out to niceguy, however, Tae-woon answers to the name before he can realize what he’s done. Aw, of course she knew! She turns around and gives him a knowing grin, and he stutters terrifically as he tries to deny that it’s him. Eun-ho just thanks him with a teasing smile, and Tae-woon snaps that he only did it because he was b-b-b-bored. Sooo adorable.

Eun-ho asks Tae-woon if he’s found a dream yet, noting that he’s good at drawing. Tae-woon counters with his usual line, that life becomes exhausting the second you have a dream. When Eun-ho unexpectedly agrees with a sad smile, Tae-woon looks up, wondering what’s wrong.

Outside, Eun-ho explains that she has to compete with hundreds of webtoons every day, but the reality is that she can only get thirteen views. Tae-woon insists that everyone who succeeds has to go through that kind of competition, but Eun-ho worries that she doesn’t really have talent, because what she wants to do and what she’s good at might be different. She worries that in the end, she’ll just spend her effort imitating other people and then vanish. Tae-woon listens thoughtfully.

At home that night, Eun-ho checks her webtoon again to find another comment from niceguy: “This webtoon is so fun! I think the author might be a genius!” he writes. He goes on, “If I could change one thing, it feels like the heroine doesn’t know what it feels like to like someone. I think trying a real relationship would really make the characters come alive.” Knowing it’s Tae-woon behind the comment, Eun-ho laughs to herself.

It’s Bit-na’s birthday the next day, and her rich classmates shower her with expensive gifts. When Nam-joo hands her a present of her own, Bit-na eagerly opens it to find a candle. When her wealthy friends laugh that it’s from a cheap brand, Bit-na hardly hides her disappointment.

They wonder if Nam-joo is making fun of Bit-na, and then begin badgering her with questions she doesn’t want to answer, like whether her family really owns a taxi company and whether it’s true that Dae-hwi dumped her. When she can’t bring herself to answer either question, they turn to Dae-hwi for the truth, who reluctantly admits that it’s true that they broke up. Bit-na and her cronies giggle at her, assuming that she got dumped.

Nam-joo is mortified, of course, and confronts Dae-hwi after class. She asks why he had to expose her like that, and when Dae-hwi just says that he wants to live honestly, Nam-joo snaps that her pride must mean nothing in the face of his honesty. Dae-hwi apologizes, not having realized how it would upset her, but Nam-joo just storms away. Tae-woon watches the fight from a distance.

After school, Tae-woon tells Eun-ho that he wants to pick up some chicken from her family’s restaurant, because his father likes their chicken. Uh-huh. Eun-ho objects to the idea, but finally relents when he threatens to order delivery for six chickens to his house. Separately. Lol.

When they get home, Eun-ho’s mom sends her on a delivery while they wait for Tae-woon’s order. Tae-woon jumps at the chance to go on a delivery with her, telling her that there are all sorts of weirdos out there who will keep ordering chickens and tease her and demand coupons, so it’s unsafe for her to go out alone. Eun-ho looks pointedly at him and starts twirling her finger around her ear to say that he’s crazy, noting that she’s pretty sure she’s met a guy like that before. Tae-woon laughs: “I think I know a guy like that too. And I hear he’s pretty handsome.” Ha.

It seems he’s not the only one to think so, because the girls who receive the delivery stare at him in awe, drooling over how good-looking he is. Eun-ho doesn’t seem very happy at all the attention he’s getting, and when they take note of the school name on his uniform, she hurries to cover up his name tag. He accepts their compliments with a gracious smile before leaving, while Eun-ho glares at the girls in annoyance. Hee.

Eun-ho asks Tae-woon if he enjoyed having those girls marvel at him, and he calls her out on being jealous. She just gets more annoyed when he calls the other girls cute, and snaps at him to date them allllll. He retorts that he’s only here because he missed her and wanted to see her. Omo. As he speaks, he lifts up his phone and snaps a selfie of them before running off, saying that he’s going to look at it all by himself. She chases after him through the parking lot.

Tae-woon and Eun-ho head back on his motorcycle, when suddenly the engine dies on the way. They’re forced to visit a mechanic for repairs, who informs him that it’ll take a while to fix the bike since it’s a foreign model.

Eun-ho looks around the store, marveling at the many different bike models. Tae-woon rattles off the features of each bike, running around the shop like a little kid before spotting a really rare one. As he goes on and on about the design and how he would alter it, Eun-ho watches him light up and get animated with a fond smile on her face.

As Tae-woon and Eun-ho sit together in her favorite park that evening, Eun-ho comments that he seems to be really into motorcycles. She notes that she’s had trouble taking the bus since the accident, and always wondered how Tae-woon could continue riding his motorcycle.

Tae-woon explains that he’d always thought of the motorcycle as Joon-ki: He’d learned to ride and even dreamt of being a motorcycle designer because of him. Though he’d been terrified to ride after Joon-ki’s accident, abandoning it felt like abandoning him—and so he grit his teeth and got back on, so that he could feel like he was with Joon-ki again.

Eun-ho asks why he threw away his dream, then, and Tae-woon says that at some point, he wondered whether a dream could really bring him happiness or change his life. Eun-ho agrees that she doesn’t know, but wishes he would find something he enjoys enough to get excited about—something that makes his heart race, and flutter, and brings him happiness.

At that, Tae-woon looks straight at her and says, “I’m already doing that. I told you—you make my heart race. Seeing you makes my heart flutter and makes me happy. Does that make you my dream?” Eeee.

Later that night, Eun-ho’s dad brings home a bunch of expensive, tasty dishes for dinner that night, and Mom wonders how they can afford all this. Winking at Dad, Eun-ho’s brother notes that he and Dad just might get lucky and get hired by a big company soon. At Mom’s skepticism, Dad just feeds her delicious food to get her to quiet and enjoy the meal.

Tae-woon arrives at his hideout the next morning to find a motorcycle magazine sitting on his desk with a bow and a note from Eun-ho: “Just like you refuse to forget Joon-ki, I wish you’d do the same with your dream. This was really expensive, so do your absolute best to fight and follow your dream!” Tae-woon flips through it with an awestruck expression before sighing to himself: “This girl is making me crazy.” Sooo cute.

Dae-hwi runs into Nam-joo outside the classroom that morning, but they awkwardly turn away in silence. Seeing this, Tae-woon finds Dae-hwi outside, asking if they fought. Dae-hwi just brushes him off, however, and retorts by asking when he plans to turn himself in as X: “Eun-ho needs to know how selfish you are.”

Pissed off by Dae-hwi’s rudeness, Tae-woon grabs him by the collar, and it’s not long before the boys are at each other’s throats. Before they can get any further, however, Teacher Gu walks by, staring them down with a stern look in his eye.

The next thing they know, Teacher Gu drags the boys to the art studio and orders them to tidy up as punishment for fighting. He offers them a chance to get rid of their demerits all at once: clean up a whole slew of classrooms together, starting with this one.

Dae-hwi asks if he has to clean with Tae-woon of all people, noting that he won’t be any help. Teacher Gu snaps back that it’s their shared responsibility so they must clean together, before suggesting that if they want to try making up with each other, they could do that, too. Aw.

Dae-hwi and Tae-woon get to work, being adorably gruff nuisances to each other by “accidentally” shoving mops and white boards in each other’s path. When they finish, an annoyed Tae-woon leaves to wash his dusty hands, and in his absence, Dae-hwi looks through a pile of artwork in the corner of the room.

When he notes a portfolio labeled “Hyun Tae-woon” from last year, he starts to flip through it, surprised to find impressive sketches and drawings. He quickly hides the portfolio when Tae-woon comes back. As they take a break outside, Dae-hwi ignores another phone call from Hee-chan, and Tae-woon asks if he’s dealt with Hee-chan okay.

Dae-hwi just shrugs it off, saying that he knows a few of his weak points after following him around for so long. Tae-woon sighs that Hee-chan has been suspiciously quiet lately, which means he’ll probably be starting some kind of fuss soon.

Sure enough, Hee-chan goes to pay a visit to ex-Principal Yang in his temporary office that afternoon, telling him that he has some decisive information about X’s identity. Uh-oh.

Ex-Principal Yang meets with Director Hyun that afternoon to explain what he’s learned: Eun-ho is the author of a webtoon about X, and it contains all sorts of information that she couldn’t know unless she were acquainted with him. He asks Director Hyun to reinstate him, and he’ll definitely find X within a week.

After school, Dae-hwi passes by Hee-chan getting into his car. Hee-chan’s mother calls out to him to get in, but this time Dae-hwi refuses and tells her that he’ll walk today. I’m proud of you, buddy.

Tae-woon notes the encounter, and follows Dae-hwi on his way home. When Dae-hwi notes that his house is in the other direction, Tae-woon just makes a half-assed excuse, and then says that this direction seems okay, too. Tae-woon heads on ahead, ignoring Dae-hwi’s confusion at why he keeps going the wrong way. Omg, the cute in this episode will break me.

Teacher Shim and Officer Han meet with Young-gun to discuss her continued absences. He tells Young-gun that if she keeps it up, she’ll be expelled. But Young-gun tells him to go ahead, since there’s no point in staying in school: “I’ll figure out my life on my own.”

At that, Officer Han tells her to figure it out, then, instead of pathetically wavering back and forth between attending school and rebelling. She notes that Young-gun keeps showing up at school because she’s uneasy about her future. Young-gun snaps that she’ll rebel properly, then. She storms out before Teacher Shim can stop her. Teacher Shim turns to Officer Han, wondering if she had to speak so harshly. Officer Han just shrugs, saying that growth isn’t possible without pain.

Officer Han strolls through the halls that morning when she runs into Young-gun, who looks to be skipping class. Officer Han isn’t cool with that, though, informing her that she’s teaching the next subject. Young-gun stares at her in confusion since the next class is PE.

Sure enough, however, Officer Han is taking over today’s gym class as a self-defense instructor. Officer Han tells Teacher Jung to grab her from behind for a demonstration. As the students whistle suggestively, he complies with a delighted smile, hugging her sweetly. Officer Han orders him to grab her more tightly before suddenly flipping him over her shoulder. Yikes.

As the students stare in horror, feeling his vicarious pain, Officer Han slams him into the floor again and again before calling on Young-gun to try next. Young-gun complies, flipping Teacher Jung to the ground like a rag doll. As the students clap, Officer Han pats her on the shoulder, telling her that she’s good enough to be a police officer one day. Young-gun struggles to hide a smile.

Eun-ho comes home that night to find her family in a panic: Dad and Eun-ho’s brother have just been scammed by a guy claiming to be a government employee. Mom falls to the ground in defeat, sobbing that it would have been better if they just used up all their money to play around: “At least then it wouldn’t be such a waste since it would have been spent on our family!”

Mom spends the night calling friends for financial help, with no luck. Eun-ho goes to sit with her outside in concern for their finances, but Mom just tells her not to worry, promising not to break down. Eun-ho finally relents, but listens sadly as Mom fields call after call, trying to find work for any extra money.

Eun-ho goes to her art academy the next day to inform them that she’s quitting for a few months. Her instructor tells her that taking a break now is a bad idea, but Eun-ho just sighs and quits, without a choice.

Eun-ho wakes up early the next morning to find her brother already getting ready to go to work. Grimly, she watches him leave, wondering if he’s resorting to manual labor.

That afternoon, she goes to her part-time job handing out advertisement flyers, and asks her employer to give her twice the amount he normally gives her. He worries that she won’t have time to study, but she smiles and insists that she’ll be fine.

That night at her park, Eun-ho looks out at the city and cries alone.

The next day, Eun-ho packs up all of her things from the hideout as Tae-woon watches in confusion. When he asks what’s wrong, she gives the excuse that her computer broke down, so she’s taking a break from drawing for a while. Tae-woon asks if she isn’t planning to come back here, but Eun-ho just acts cheerful, saying that she has to work for now.

Eun-ho finds a job at a convenience store, fielding aggravating customers and struggling to appease her boss. When she goes outside to take a break, she finds Tae-woon waiting for her, having gone to every single convenience store in the area.

Tae-woon brings Eun-ho to a café to ask why she’s suddenly started working so hard. She notes that she just wants to experience the world a little, and says that it’s normal for high-schoolers to do this kind of work. Tae-woon insists that she quit her job, however, saying that it’s too tiring and it takes up the time she should be spending on her webtoon.

Eun-ho snaps that she’s not working because she wants to, but can’t bring herself to explain what’s really going on. She comes up with excuse after excuse, trying to find a fitting lie, but eventually she gives up: “Can’t you just leave me alone?” she asks, holding back tears. Tae-woon stares in confusion as she walks out.

Dae-hwi takes the bus home and thinks about how angry Nam-joo was at him. He flashes back to when they were still happily dating, remembering a study date they had at a café. Dae-hwi had come by to find a stranger offering her a drink and asking for her number.

Annoyed, he’d shooed the guy away and sat next to her to block other people’s view of her, telling her to cover her face with a mask and glasses from now on because she’s too pretty. In the present, Dae-hwi holds back tears as he thinks of her.

Eun-ho goes to her park again, and this time she looks over at the bench where Tae-woon had called her his dream, picturing herself sitting there with him as if she were another girl entirely. She looks over at them sadly, while past Eun-ho and Tae-woon smile at each other.

Meanwhile, Tae-woon sits in his hideout, staring at the magazine she’d bought him, and mutters that she was the one who said not to give up on his dream. Deciding something, he grabs a gift bag and rushes out on his motorcycle.

Tae-woon is waiting for her by the time Eun-ho gets home. He asks what’s making her suffer so much, but when she doesn’t answer and tries to walk past, Tae-woon stops her and offers her the gift bag. “You said that you can’t draw because your computer is broken,” Tae-woon says, “If you use this, you don’t have to work anymore, right?”

Eun-ho scoffs, wondering how everything is so easy to him: “Is my pride, my pain, and my effort that easy to you?” Tae-woon tries to tell her that he just wanted to help, but Eun-ho tells him that no one’s dream is that easy to keep. She tells him that what she needs right now isn’t his kindness: “So stay away from me. Don’t worry about me or my life. That’s my answer to your confession.” As Tae-woon stares at her in shock, Eun-ho walks past him. She pauses for a moment, but resolutely walks on.

COMMENTS

Noooo, don’t fight! I knew that things would come to a head between Eun-ho and Tae-woon because of money at some point, and I’m excited that we’re finally touching the topic of Tae-woon’s massive wealth and Eun-ho’s humble background. I do hope the show won’t devolve into angst territory for too long—mostly because I never want to lose Tae-woon and Eun-ho’s adorably (and refreshingly) supportive dynamic. Of course, if there’s one thing School 2017 does well, it’s resolving tropes in a satisfying way—and I’m certain the showrunners know the show’s strengths too well to leave the cuteness factor at bay for too long.

I’m pleased with how the drama is choosing to depict the latest conflict of wealth disparity between Eun-ho and Tae-woon, particularly with regards to how their reactions fit into their characters. From the very beginning, we’d seen that Tae-woon was never reluctant to solve his problems with money—he buys and disposes of expensive electronics with ease, uses his family’s money as an excuse to free himself of the obligation to study, and even in this episode, teased Eun-ho about buying six chickens from her restaurant as if buying six chickens meant that little to him.

I’d imagine part of his view on the easiness of money comes from a cynicism of its power following Joon-ki’s accident, but it also seems that he has a fundamental issue with understanding its weight as well. I find this particularly interesting because his two former best friends, Joon-ki and Dae-hwi, were both from humble family backgrounds, and his friendship with Dae-hwi crumbled because of that exact issue.

Meanwhile, where Tae-woon solves his problems with money, Eun-ho endures everything from bullying to grade discrimination with steadfast idealism and emotional strength—almost the exact opposite of Tae-woon’s material approach. With that in mind, I totally get why Eun-ho wouldn’t want to tell Tae-woon about her family’s financial problems. While her pain, her mother’s forced strength, and her brother and dad’s guilt is palpably, horrifically real to her, Tae-woon has the ability to trivialize those emotions in a heartbeat and with a snap of his fingers.

The issue isn’t that he can easily resolve her family’s monetary debt, it’s that he can just as easily invalidate their pain. If Eun-ho told Tae-woon about her financial problems at the café, I’m certain his immediate reaction would be to try to offer or sneak his money her way by any means possible—and that’s the last thing Eun-ho wants to experience. These are complex emotions to feel, both on Tae-woon’s and Eun-ho’s parts, and yet I think the show has really nailed its depiction.

Still, Tae-woon has shown a repeated willingness to change his habits, attitude, and outlook for Eun-ho’s sake in the past, and while I suspect it’ll be hard for him to truly understand the weight of her financial worries, I’m excited to see how he’ll put in the effort to change himself again. Dae-hwi and Tae-woon also made some really significant strides in this episode, and since the main cause of their rift is the exact issue that Tae-woon and Eun-ho are facing now—the question of trivializing someone’s sincerity—I hope that recognizing Eun-ho’s sentiments will be an avenue for him to patch things up with Dae-hwi, too. Though the question of Dad and Eun-ho’s brother’s scam did kind of come out of nowhere this episode, I’m really pleased with its consequences and implications for the rest of our characters and their growth.

Finally, how totally sweet is it that Teacher Gu was the catalyst to get Tae-woon and Dae-hwi to make up and start to understand each other? My favorite thing about this show is that it never tries to take the easy way out. While it’d be easy to make the bright and bubbly Eun-ho or the selfless and optimistic Teacher Shim bring the boys together, instead, we have gruff, tough-love Teacher Gu making them scrub paint off floors. It’s perfect. The development we’ve seen in all of our characters has been so satisfying, and at this point, I have no more demands to make.

I swear, Dae-hwi and Tae-woon being childish will be the death of me. I'm proud to see them finally came to term with the fact that they did make mistakes, but that it's time for them to move past that. That their friendship is much more important, and that it can still be saved. And they were just too cute, hemming and hawing about being sorry without actually wanted to say sorry and potentially make it sounds corny. I love how they both wanted to skip that awkward part of transitioning back to being friends. Instead, they just pick up where they left off by showing how much they care about each other and making lots of childish gestures and remarks. And if that's how they manage to finally being best friends again, give me more please, and thank you.

They are so cute together! How did they even manage to be apart all this time? The thing with these two is that all the anger and misunderstandings are all bottled up! They just need to talk...or fight (in Teacher Gu's view) to let it all out. Bottling an emotion, especially anger and sadness is very unhealthy. But like you said they do pick up right where they left off...they both seem petty and childish when compared to how they were as frenemies..?

Like Eunho pinpoints, they fight not for the sake of the fight itself, bur rather for self-punishment. The fight hurts them a lot, but they feel like they deserve and need to do it that way.

Aw. That heart breaking ending, while i do feel hurt for Taewoon, prolly his 1st heartbreak, but i completely understand why Eunho had to reject him at that moment. Her pride was hurt, Taewoon coudn't seem to understand her coz everything seems so easy for him, she being in a family with a financial problem and her struggling to come to terms with her situation adding by the fact she also lose confidence in drawing the webtoon thus eventually giving up on her dream took its toll on her. This is a reality and I believe this applies to all of us in our daily lives. When we feel demotivated and down we just cant seem to afford and enjoy little happiness. But then knowing Taewoon he woudn't give up on 1st rejection and we'll see that on episode 12.. Love love love this drama

Exactly. I'm sad my OTP broke up, but narratively I'm satisfied with the problem the writer introduced to us. Eun-ho's decision makes total sense, and there is no hint of noble idiocy either. And with this kind of problem, I believe that when those two finally manage to solve it, they can learn a lot from it and become more mature. Which is a very welcome character development.

I'm really glad they addressed it. I love Taewoon, but I was always uneasy with how he didn't really get how privileged he was and how he didn't understand how trapped people like Dae-Hwi and Eun-Ho are. It's a totally foreign worldview for him.

I think once he gains some understanding, his relationships with both Eun-Ho and Dae-Hwi will heal.

I was really angry at first (at Eun-Ho) for this reason. Tae-Woon's shown he's able to change, but he has to be able to understand what he's doing wrong.
That moment when he realizes he did something really wrong (when handing her the gift) but has no idea what broke me. I just wanted to shake Eun-Ho for not seeing that. He sees her hurting and wants so much to help that he bulldozes right through to being the money fairy, not realizing how much that can hurt too.
I did come around to Eun-Ho's viewpoint after some though, but I felt that it was a bit mishandled in this episode, mostly because she would not TALK TO HIM. And that is my biggest annoyance in Dramaland.

I was a little frustrated that she didn't explain, but I understood her. She was still raw from having to suddenly pause/give up on her dream. While she had always known the difference between the have and have nots, this situation made her more sensitive to the issue and resentful of this difference. Then you have Taewoon who has never held a part-time job and is able to just give away a laptop.

Required fields are marked *

Love, love, love. I'm never quite sure what we have in store plotwise, but I continue to be surprised by what each week brings.

This episode very deftly navigated the more angsty moments between Daehwi and Taewoon (the yelling in Taewoon's hideout) and the comic ones. I've been wondering how they would begin reconciling, so I was surprised and entertained by the pettiness and bickering. They are both deeply hurt by each other, but they are also young and beneath it all, they care for each other. I loved how they began mending their broken bridges in such an everyday way.

Taewoon may be acutely aware of how wrong his dad's approach of solving problems with money is, but he's not completely immune to using the same approach too, just to a lighter degree. Whether he likes it or not, he has also led a much more sheltered life than say, Sarang, Daehwi, and Eunho, which he needed to become aware of at some point.

Though Eunho was rather harsh with her ultimatum, it makes sense how she would feel affronted by Taewoon's solution, as @hanshimi explained perfectly. But on her part, she needs to learn not to push Taewoon away just because she has serious problems to worry over. Although his solution is naive and the way he executes his intentions comes off as bratty, his concern for her is true, and that's exactly what she needs—not a quick fix to her hardships, but someone who is willing to support her through it.

Required fields are marked *

That's an interesting observation, that Tae Woon uses money (and power) to help his friends / the weak, similar to how his dad uses it to get him out of trouble. I really like how @hanshimi pointed out that Tae Woon has a "fundamental issue with understanding" the "weight" of wealth, or the emotional burden it creates when he gives out iPads and tablets like they're nothing to his less well-off friends, because it emphasises the gulf between them and their family's financial struggles, while temporarily alleviating them. But I think his friends know that he is genuinely doing it out of concern and affection, which makes it worse because they are probably trying their best to accept their circumstances and work hard for what they need / want, and not become dependent on someone else.

Required fields are marked *

Yes! I think Tae-Woon is one of those thoughtlessly generous types: he has it, so he can give it, without question. He just has failed to see what that can feel like to someone who doesn't have those resources. Not that he won't, but no one's told him (though I'm not sure they fully understand it themselves), and they are just reaching the age where kids start to really understand about money and what it can take to live.

Required fields are marked *

Eunho is always potrayed to be courageous, but it's not like she is immune. Regarding some matters she has tendency of running away too. Just like how she avoids riding bus, everytime Taewoon tries to show his feeling, she always acts all shy and flees from his sight. Despite her exterior, I think Eunho is actually the type who keeps her feeling in check. And so when the money issue occurs, Eunho chooses to push away Taewoon instead of explaining properly. Thus Taewoon is not only the one who shoulder the responsibility of their current rocky relationship.

I agree. Part of the reason for their fall out at the end was that Eun Ho didn't actually communicate what the problem was. So Tae Woon was grasping and trying to solve it in any way he knew how, which ultimately was the worst way possible.

Maybe I just love the attention. Only when they start confessing, I quickly got out of the situation. Looking back, it's not something I am proud of.

I hope that anyone who is perplexed at how Eun Ho can accept gifts and even a movie date from another guy when she's obviously likes only Tae Woon can cut her some slack.

When Eun Ho's father and brother were scammed, it really hit me a lot. Because i got scammed just like a week ago for the FIRST TIME in my entire life , through a phone call. I have always avoided taking calls from unknown numbers, but somehow, i dont know why i took the call and it was surprisingly believable since, i have shopped from that super -mart and they were saying i won a prize from that store. I did not lose that much, approx. around $20 ( as per in my currency 200).

The worse thing in being scammed is that you feel so much regret, and feel so pathetic , causing a huge burden to your family. That feeling really kills you inside. The victim in this case suffers more than the culprit.

I had to watch my grandmother getting scammed since she didn't want to listen to my advice. If I had explained it to her better it might have been different, but I think I insulted her pride. I felt ashamed of myself for not being able to communicate with my own family.

Why do I love it even more when DaeHwi does something nice for Taewoon. But then DH says or does something crazy to TW, so that TW doesn't think DH still cares about him. I find it sweet DH would dress all in black just to protect his 'new' friends!!! It is like TaeWoon, Eunho and Bora are the three musketeers and DaeHwi is their newest sidekick.

Teacher Gu and his eavesdropping techniques, classic, for a second there I thought it was PE teacher Jung or softie teacher Shim. And then all I see is his pummeling-stick and his roll-sleeve 80's blazer, and I am like not again, this time there is no mediator, TaeWoon and DaeHwi are going to kill each other!!!

PE Teacher Jung, don't let Han Suji take over your class, again.

I never cried so much when Eunho sensed it coming on, if TaeWoon or any of the new 'musketeers' gets into trouble again, she knows that TW's dad will only get him out of trouble again. I cried so much even more than watching a melodrama. So it is like he must stay away from her, that is why she rejects him and his help.

Up until now, we've only seen Taewoon through the problems with his dad and his bestfriends, Daehwi and Joonggi as well as his relationship with Eunho. I want to see more of his past if possible. Like how he became friends with them and maybe a bit more info about his family just so I can understand him better. He's obviously a great character but I feel like I don't know him that well for some reason. Am I the only one feeling that way?

I would like to know what happened to his mom, though.

We have almost the same thoughts about this recent development between Eunho and Taewoon so I'm gonna write down here the same one I posted on Twitter yesterday hehe

So I liked this little arc about Eunho rejecting Taewoon. I suppose in dramas we can readily call it noble idiocy, but since we’ve been with Eunho for 11 episodes now & saw the lives of these kids, we all understand where they’re coming from. I have always wondered how they would address Eunho and Taewoon’s differences in terms of their status. Eunho comes from an average family and everything she dreams of, she needs to work for with twice as much effort. Taewoon, on the one hand, is rich. He does get everything in life easier, and he lives this rather simplistic thought that most, if not all, problems can be solved by money especially if it really is a money problem. Eunho was going through a dilemma where it seems that she has to put a stop to her dream first because of this sudden unforeseen financial problem in her family. They do get by okay each day, but when something huge hit you like that, you kind of feel trapped in the situation too. She has to think first of helping her parents to be able to address their financial needs, even if it means setting her dream aside for now. That's how small the world is when you're in high school, especially if you're not well-off. The rejection, I can totally understand how she ended up with that decision: it was a mix of frustration, fear, and her reality. All throughout the episode, she can't seem to tell Taewoon her financial struggles. That's very difficult. Being as I have gone through that same situation once back in high school, I can guarantee you that for people like us who are not well-off, issues about money eats up our pride like no other. It's always so difficult to open matters like that with a (potential) partner because more often than not, they won't understand it. On top of it, Eunho has never experienced being in a relationship before so perhaps the idea of completely opening her heart someone, including these personal things, was difficult. Now, Taewoon isn't at fault for dong the thing that he knows. After all, Eunho never told him about her real situation. He thought that it was just about her computer. But it is thus a stepping stone for him to realize that not all things are easily solved by money. It takes a great deal of sensitivity to understand that some people have deeper problems than just surface stuff like money. True, Eunho's problem is money, but along with it is the chaos within her family, and this need to be responsible. She rejected him that time because it was simply not the time to be falling in love, along with all of the reasons that led her to it. She was scared & she didn't have the courage to face her own heart, but it's true that when the reality of our lives get in the way of romance, we naturally fold into ourselves and choose not to be "happy." (At least, just yet).

Well said. I think for TaeWoon it's the status in life he's used to. So for example - during DH's birthday, his gift was an expensive tablet - for which JG said - since it is the ability of TW to give thus it's ok for DH to accept.
So, it's a good thing for him to experience a new perspective.

this drama is really a roller coaster ride of emotions, you got the first 55 mins of enjoying it and then boom, the bitterness and sadness at the end... OMG me and my sis were sobbing at the "break-up" at the end...

I can somehow understand where Eun Ho is coming from, not just because she and her family are poor but because somehow Tae Woon represented "easiness" where he can just turn things the other way when hardships come his way. Eun Ho is trying to cope up with her struggles without anyone trying to walked on in her pride, as that is basically what is left with her now. Now when Tae Woon came and offer the tablet for her broken computer, though it was an act of kindness from Tae Woon for Eun Ho it was not perceived as kindness but sadly as pity (our pride is always to blame here ?) but as ive said for Eun Ho that is just basically what she and her family has left so she is protecting it at all cost even if that means cutting her ties with Tae Woon ??? ???

btw i love coming here and read comments to fill the gap for the next episode :D

You've hit on a lot of great points. At first I was like "What the heck, girl, can't you see he's trying to help you?" But I think I totally understand, now. Eun Ho isn't fully in tune with why she feels what she feels. She has a lot of conflicting emotions--feeling powerless and overwhelmed, wanting Tae Woon's support but not wanting him to come in and fix everything on top of being generally confused about his feelings for her, understanding that he's only trying to help but frustrated that he is being dismissive and not seeing things from her perspective. And when she is already overwhelmed and exhausted by her family's situation, all she can really do it push him away at this point because he's making things worse and she can't even really explain to him exactly why. In the end, it's a good lesson for him to learn, and I think she knows that of course she will see him again and of course they will still be friends, but for that moment she needs a little space.

Uh, what was Hee-chan's punishment for school violence? Cause everyone else had to pull weeds when they got in trouble (and I would've paid to see him do that).

The end scene made me so sad, but I hope they resolve it quickly, cause if there's one thing we've learned, Tae-woon is tenacious when it comes to being around Eun-ho, so I highly doubt he'll give up.

I feel like an idiot. This is the first time when I've found that I didn't quite get the whole "the break-up was warranted" and everyone else agrees but me. I think I really need to go back and watch how everything played out in the beginning to better understand where we are today. I think its because much of the first few episodes were quite difficult to watch, but now that I know what I know it should be easier. I need to understand the rift between Dae-hwi and Tae-woon as well.

I swear, everything just went over my head this episode. So for me, I was like, Tae-woon loves you, he has been an emotional rock for you for some time now, and you break up with him without really explaining to him what's going on in your family life so that he could better understand!? The break up was so abrupt as well. I guess I've been spoon fed these similar issues or they have been explained in a better way in other dramas.

In other news I like that: Dae-hwi and Tae-woon are on the mend; other girls comment on Tae-woon's attractiveness for a little jealously and click in the head of Eun-ho; we finally see some passion out of Tae-woon for something other than Eun-ho in the bike store; Tae-woon's pettiness; Teacher Gu actually being a good teacher continues; and the list goes on, but I need to head out. lol.

I have some friends who are like her. They can easily ask for a breakup / threaten to break up whenever there's a problem. Perhaps it's because you tend to lash out your anger at the person closest to you while hoping they would understand why even without explaining?

8

Required fields are marked *

Yes, I think that makes sense. I was reading the lyrics to Bomi & Namjoo's (the A Pink NJ, not the School one) OST which they explained was Eunho's theme, and the opening lines go "As much as I’m young, you’re young too / But I forgot that and I gave you a hard time / (Rather than understanding you) I got annoyed by you". It's a pretty accurate representation of Eunho's attitude towards Taewoon. She definitely enjoys being around him, but in some ways she is taking his effort for granted, so I was happy to see Taewoon address that in Ep12.

@hades, I did find the way the sort-of breakup was executed a bit clunky, because she could've been mad at him without telling him to stay away forever. She kind of zoomed in on the one mistake he makes, forgetting all the other ways he has been supporting her in her moment of frustration and anger. But I do feel that the details of their disagreement and conflict make sense in light of their backgrounds and in keeping with what we've seen from each of them so far.

In adult drama, we get noble idiocy separation a lot because they understand their partner too much hat they better breaking up instead of going through the problem together.

3

Actually, to be fair, a lack of maturity isn't exclusive only to youth or school dramas. In fact, in the few I've watched this year (Weightlifting Fairy, The Liar and His Lover, and now School 2017) the young characters are often quicker to realise and be honest about their flaws, precisely because they realise how young they are and how much more they have to learn and grow. It's what makes school/youth dramas refreshing for me.

I think Eunho didn't explain herself to Taewoon because she hasn't even fully grasped where she made a mistake—she's too focused on Taewoon's mistake in this moment and how she feels about it.

3

My take is that it's more a lovers spat (although they are not officially a couple but who are they kidding!) and it would be more unrealistic if they did not have arguments or quarrels. I welcome this one cos it addresses the issue of their different economic perspective and it will intrude again during the course of their relationship

I think it's just her way of dealing with big problems. She puts 100% effort into solving it so anything that is outside of that goal (her drawing, Tae Woon) gets put on pause.

no, i feel the same way too! i didn't think the breakup felt very organic, and personally thought that eun-ho's ultimatum at the end of this episode felt very out of character. i get what they're arguing about on paper, but somehow it didn't really translate well onscreen for me (this even more so in the next episode). i think i would've liked a little more buildup, but that does seem to be a consistent flaw in the writing imo.

@hades in kdrama they seem to break up for the most innocuous - sometimes absurd - reasons, like noble idiocy, amnesia, returning to home planet etc. like @purpleteapot said, she could just been mad instead of "breaking up", but then this wouldn't be kdrama haha. To me, this is a problem about money. That is not to say that I understand why she "broke up" with him, but I think basically she couldn't except his expensive gift ( drinks at coffeebay and subway sandwiches are fine ).

If I/ my family were in debt, and a person who was interested in me ( who I am also kind of interested in ) just wrote me a cheque for the amount I needed, would I take it and cash it in to solve my problems - I think different people would choose differently. But EunHo seems to be someone who can't accept such blatant acts of generosity because it goes against her character of standing up for herself.

As hanshimi theorised in the recap, maybe she didn't tell him about her family's financial problems cause he might have just handed her a stack of cash. Which is only natural of him because what she needs he happens to have - like all those other times where she needed a ride and he had a motorcycle, she need inspiration for her webtoon and he gave her guidance, even when she needed physical assistance and he saved her. But money seems to complicate things ( the root of evil ? ) . Somehow she can only accept his feelings for her if they are in non-monetary terms

To be honest, I didn't really get it until they talked it out in ep. 12.
I also have to continually remind myself that they are 18 and this is their first foray into the non-family, more than friend arena. Sometimes after we've lived it for awhile we forget why we did those things too.

I agree with Hanshimi, that the loss of money came out of nowhere. When I first watched it, I skipped a bit and then I was like "What just happened? Wut?"
Anyway, I felt that Eun Ho was too harsh on Tae Woon, but after rewatching and reading the recap, I get her more. It is a terrible feeling, especially when it is not just your dreams but your pride that gets hurt.

In real life loss of money comes out of nowhere - people in their desperation are playing lottery, going to casino and loose almost everything in one go, putting their savings to the hands of "fast money" makers - nobank institutions. In one click you can become a homeless person. Eun Ho's mom couldn't believe it like we can't but life is a very unpredictable thing. "Take the money and run!" is from Woody Alan's movie and plenty of people are living for it.

I agree with BC that money problems can just crop up like a bad nightmare when you least expect it.
Plus EH was already feeling demoralised that her webtoon was not doing well - and it is realistic that she lashed out at the one closest to her - in this case Tae woon - which is sad.
But on a positive note - great - cos it kinda proves that TW is the one closest to her at present :P

I believe I can rant about every single movement of Kim Junghyun's acting. He is switching the mood from drama to comedy to awkward romance really quickly and effortlessly. Jang Dongyoon is great at dramatic scenes, but Kim Junghyun seems to have full control of his facial muscles. It never goes overboard or falls flat. Everything is just spot-on. Dramagod please bless this man with bright future career! Because---THAT CHOCOLATE SCENE, THOUGH!!

But anyway, everyone in this drama has good acting, even the minor characters like the bully girl Younggun. I also credit Kim Heechan for making his character easy to dislike. Just like annoying classmate we unluckily have in our class. He is like Kwon Sua (of Sassy Go Go) and imho his acting is comparable to Chae Soobin's. Which means really good.

This episode is basically an exhausting emotional ride. Started with Taewoon x DaeHwi's clash, ended up with Taewoon x EunHo's crumbling camaraderie, with all cutesy and jealousy filled in-between.
Teenage is an age when your world is like falling apart just because one or two things doesn't smooth as expected. This drama perfectly captures it and I think we all can relate to that kind of feeling.

I can't agree more!

About Kim Jung Hyun, I see a bright future ahead for this man. In the hands of a lesser actor, Tae Swoon could have easily become Tae Swill. He's so deft at funny, cute, awkward, sincere, dangerous and more. Instead of the usual rich jerk bad boy, we get such a swoonworthy character Tae Woon.

And yeah, Hee-chan is to School 2017 what Soo-ah was to Sassy Go Go, which is fitting because the two dramas share a writer, Jung Chan-mi. It's no surprise we have so much nuance on all the characters, even the ones we should hate.

Strange, everyone talking here that Tae Woo always used without money as if it were nothing, but I've never seen him using money to escape his problems. Because it does not mean things come "easy" to him, just like Eun-Ho suggested. She saw his father hitting him, so I found Eun-Ho's "accusation" a little strong.
She didn't tell the truth to him, so I don't blame his reaction, for him, handing over a computer is the same gesture she'd bought a magazine for him.

That is why i cried soo much... This writer is a genius at build up to the "ugly cry".

Eunho knows that her gift isn't the same in monetary value. And that TaeWoon's father stands for him and backs him regardless of what he does. Where as her family backs her too, but they are prone to financial problems. It is as if she senses that TW's father is watching them and will not want her to be using TW or be a 'bad' influence on him, lol, if only his dad knew TW like we do... But that us why I am greatful she said that to him now!!!, "everything comes so easy to you", she is protecting her pride, by rejecting his advances big or small.

The thing is, he's never known not having money. It's not even that he uses money to escape problems - he doesn't even have those problems because he has money.
He bought three chickens with delivery that he wouldn't even eat - I have a two-income household and that would be money I couldn't waste. It's not necessarily intentional, but it is real.

Taewoon is simply a giving person. Due to wealth, he can afford much more expensive goods to give. It's just like that. Sadly, this can be rather intimidating especially if the other party is in financial problem. If only Eunho is just as rich, the crisis won't occur in the first place. That's why in her point of view Taewoon always gets thing easy for him.

Little does she know, rich kids have their rich kids' problem too. It's what she forgets to do. She doesn't make any effort to see how thing is from his point of view. So yeah, her accussation is just a little bit too much.

I think she does see things from his point of view and it upsets her that he is so well-off that he doesn't realize that others have money issues that affect their work at school, their health, their college aspirations, their dreams...pretty much their entire future and the future of their children. And that struggle to hold onto your pride, but also survive and sometimes having to give up your pride to surivive is something that TaeWoon would have trouble with.

Required fields are marked *

It's not necessarily the money. The way Eun Ho sees it, Tae Woo gets away with a lot of things because of his dad which makes him prone to treating other people's problems as not that big of a deal. His "you can do whatever you want" attitude does not work for everyone.

I love that the story goes out of its way to show us that although the boys are fighting, they still care deeply about one another and keep tabs on each other's problems and situations. It's indicative not only to the depth of their friendship but also true to the deeply-caring nature expressed particularly by Tae-woon. It makes sense that once he's let his walls down and let someone in, he'd have a very hard time cutting off completely from the relationship.

What an awesome episode!

My favorite moments:

1. Tae Swoon eating the chocolate right out of Eun Ho’s hand and Eun Ho’s horrified face. I couldn’t decide if she was more aghast that he ate her chocolate or that his mouth engulfed her fingers. I’ll go with both.

2. PE teacher Jung suggest that the school should start evaluating teachers, not just the kids. Later we also have Teacher Gu giving the boys a chance to work things out. A beanie who just started this drama voiced disbelief at how badly the show is at portraying teachers. I think the show exaggerated a lot in the beginning to make a point and perhaps we are seeing parodies of real life situations in Korean schools today. Slowly over the course of th drama, we see what, how and why these issues exist and hopefully by the end, we can see these issues can be addressed and solved or minimise if everyone – teachers, school board, students and parents all work together.

3. The title(thanks to a beanie below) of this episode is “Dreams Sparkly But Unnerving “ How apt!

I can totally empathize with Eun Ho. I think a person who is gifted in the arts be it art, music, dance etc will always be acutely aware of her talent or the limitations of it. They also have a critical eye so they can instantly tell the difference between good and genius. I felt the same way when I was watching The Liar and His Lover of how Chan Young feels towards Han Gyul.

I love the drama for addressing this.

4. I love the scene where Eun Ho sits back in the motor workshop and smiles at Tae Woon. This show does romance so well, much better than many adult romance dramas out there. The look Eun Ho has belongs to one who is happy because her beloved is happy. There is no need for meaningful stares and an overly expressive face.

As for the break up, I see it a bit differently.

At that moment Eun Ho wasn’t just experiencing the crush of her family’s financial woes or the impact of the situation on her pursuit of her dream. We’ll find out more of that in the next episode. I think she was too harsh towards Tae Woon who wasn’t fully aware of what was going on and had nothing but good intentions. Sure, he used his money to buy her a new tablet but I don’t see him anywhere near trivalising her financial woes just because he is rich and therefore cannot understand.

Much as I disagree with Eun Ho’s actions, I can understand why she did what she did. If the break up was extended then my opinion would be completely different. Next episode confirms my belief that this drama knows what’s it is doing and is exceeding my expectations in more ways than one.

Both haave their pride. I agree that EH was harsh. But in Fights and spats who doesn't lash out? No one takes time to phrase their sentences and vet what they say - they are speaking from a place of hurt.
But they need to really hash things out. I would not think it realistic if they had an outburst and then and there talked it out. It's more realistic that a quarrel drags a little and there's a couple of attempts made to work things out. In my experience, I'm the one who wants to yell and talk it out immediately while my hubby prefers to walk away and not talk until a couple of attempts later!!

I understand Eun-ho's reluctance to accept help from Tae-woon. To some people, their dreams are the reason they find the strength each day to go on and fight for that reason to keep going. Equally important though is the love for family that gives us all the support to realize our dreams. She might have felt helpless because of her family's financial situation and thought that if she keeps going, her family would sacrifice more for her. In this episode, she only gave a lame reason that she would postpone doing what she loves because her computer broke. Tae-woon might have thought it is something that he can help her with without realizing the real reason of Eun-ho's current dilemma (which of course will be revealed in the next episode). I do not think that she was really angry at Tae-woon. She was just frustrated with the situation she was at and Tae-woon, even without realizing her real situation, shoved his help as if what Eun-ho is dealing with is just a petty problem. Oh well, this kind of conflict, however, is needed may that be in real life or dramaland because this only leads to deeper understanding between us the people who are important to us.

And Kim Se Jong better be doing more roles , hopefully this type of strong female roles because. As much as Kim Jung Hyuns acting is good , it works on those because of Kim Se Jong s reactions. Her emotional acting is so on point . Her smile can light up the screen as well as her struggle.. we can feel it and root for her.

Of course, I've read ALL the comments, and upvoted every single comment on Tae Coupon, Tae Swoon, Tae Ferrero. But I have to admit it was Dae Hwi that made me fistpump for rejecting Hee Chan's car ride offer. Go Dae Hwi! Teacher Gu-Ru?

By the way, I'm not sure what the drama wants me to think of Hee Chan. In one scene he's being a complete jerk to the girls, and next scene he's crying for being suffocated by his mother. Editing was choppy - or my ability to empathize with him is gone - so I didn't feel bad for him. Something's not working for me there. ?

Hee-chan was more than just being a jerk. He was physically abusive towards his girlfriend and then pretty much threatened her into silence with his position and doing the whole gross "no one will believe you" thing. And that negative aspect of him isn't really tied to his issues with his mom. I don't find him redeemable and don't wish for the drama to spend scenes redeeming him (maybe fill those minutes with some Kyung-woo scenes instead!).

Contrast that with Young-gun, who is also a bully, but you get the feeling that her bullying ways can be connected to her past and home life, which we don't know much about yet. And she's not privileged.

3

I actually feel like Hee-chan's generally being the kind of kid who will probably end up in the news for expensive car hit-and-runs some day as a result of his own entitlement, is actually tied to his mother's treatment of him - not the part involving belittling him for not being first in class, but specifically the part that repeatedly seeks to make excuses for him and insists to the rest of the world that he did no wrong, ever, and that he cannot apologise. That's a really toxic mentality to be raised with.

I don't know if redemption is truly possible for him, either. Not after Bora and what he did to her.

awww Eun-ho's harshness to Tae-woon did feel a bit sudden, and I'm not saying I agree with her way of dealing with her problems, but I get why she's acting that way (at least partly as a cover for her own feelings/frustration at her situation) and also why it might be frustrating to have the boy she likes playing the money fairy. It's still really sad, though, because Tae-woon is so into helping her out that he doesn't realise that this particular form of it could rankle/create an emotional burden (as it did with Dae-hwi), and they end up at cross purposes.

The thing with Eun-ho is, she knows how he feels about her, and it's probably easier when he's doing other things for her - leaving comments on her webtoon (AWWWWWWW @the scene where he realised he was caught as 'NiceGuy'), talking to her when she's down, revealing to Bora that he was X, etc. But money complicates matters, and even though I feel bad for poor Tae-woon, I get Eun-ho too.

I do love that our broken bromance is on the mend, though. Cleaning products are essential for a bromance :). And both Dae-hwi and Tae-woon have been alone for so long, they need each other (Kim Jung-hyun's extremely uncanny resemblance to Kim Woo-bin does not help, lol). Dae-hwi's still under enormous amounts of pressure with very little by way of a support system, but I'm so proud of him for rejecting the final level of abasement and telling Hee-chan where to put his demands. (and loathsome as he is, I feel sorry for Hee-chan too).
