The Best Hit: Episodes 21-22
by gummimochi
Oh my, I wouldn’t mind getting caught in the rain with that face. Things are about to get more complicated for Hyun-jae when the seemingly small steps he’s taken are starting to add up to important changes. He may try his best to justify his actions for the better good, but what if time is giving him an opportunity to seize today?
EPISODE 21 RECAP
In an empty practice room, Hyun-jae tends to the cuts on Woo-seung’s arm. He scolds her for being so accident-prone and putting up with pain because that only inconveniences other people. He stresses, “You better not get sick or hurt for no particular reason!”
He fills in the awkward silence by saying that it’s bothersome, but Woo-seung has questions of her own, like how he ended up working as a music producer for Star Punch. Believing that there must be a reason, she asks if his memory has returned.
Hyun-jae swiftly denies it, then adds that he thinks he must be musically talented. He gives her the half-baked truth that CEO Young-jae wanted to employ him after coincidentally seeing his music notebook. She finds that hard to believe, but Hyun-jae counters that reality often sounds more absurd than fiction.
He’s astounded when Woo-seung complains that their dramatic exit off the music video set will stir office gossip, since he thinks she should be grateful for pulling her out of there. She objects to being called “Part-timer” when she’s an intern now, but it’s all the same to Hyun-jae because she doesn’t have a full-time gig.
Ji-hoon sports a new haircut at the bakery, where a customer snaps a few photo of him before asking him to take a few together. He obliges her in the cute poses she wants, though the moment is cut short with Hye-ri’s arrival.
She’s here to ask if it’s okay to give Ji-hoon’s number out to a contact from her previous agency who wants to meet him after seeing his photos go viral online. It seems she fully expected Ji-hoon’s reluctance and divulges that she did it anyway, so he should expect a call soon.
He asks why she bothered coming if she’d act of her own accord anyway, “To see you,” she replies. She gets up to leave, saying it was enough for her to see him. She notes that he doesn’t even give her a chance to get close to him, but she’d rather that he say nothing than try to act like the nice guy and hurt her feelings in the process.
Over at Star Punch, Hyun-jae hops on an elevator with Woo-seung. He teases that the rumor mill is probably churning about them and smushes his index fingers together as if they’re kissing.
Woo-seung concurs that they do have a relationship—a “master and slave” relationship, since Hyun-jae still has an outstanding debt with her. She agrees to keep Hyun-jae’s employment a secret from the boys since she believes it’s unbelievable that the village idiot scored a job.
He surprisingly agrees with the “idiot [babo]” expression and interprets the syllables into his own abbreviated slang: “Someone you miss no matter how much you see them.” She finds his jokes lame, and issues a warning at the door that people at work better not get the wrong idea about them.
When they return home together, MC Drill mentions that he heard through the grapevine of the fiasco that happened on the music video set today. Since Ji-hoon wasn’t there, he regales his buddy in an over-the-top tale which is grounded in some truth: Woo-seung knocked over a light that injured an idol girl, and when the angry director was about to strike her, the new music producer punched the man square in the face.
Behind him, Woo-seung mouths to Hyun-jae to let MC Drill reach his grand finale wherein the producer took Woo-seung’s hand, said “Baby, let’s go” (ha, à la Lovers in Paris?), and dragged her away. Woo-seung is quick to call that a bonkers story, but then Hyun-jae listens intently when she’s asked how she knows the new hotshot director. She remains tight-lipped, though, and sends Hyun-jae a knowing look before walking away.
Later that night, Ji-hoon and Woo-seung have coffee out on the roof deck, where she sighs that studying on her own pales in comparison to the days she attended the academy as Fake Ji-hoon.
She brings up how she only recently found out about Ji-hoon’s internet fame because she doesn’t use social media. Ji-hoon hilariously has to help her with his nickname Part-timer Oppang and downplays the idea that other agencies are interested in him because of his photos.
Everything about this wave of fame feels surreal to him since he was ready to put his dreams aside, but Woo-seung encourages him to seize the day, believing that he’ll regret it if he doesn’t. Her words are enough to convince him, and he lays down to get to her eye level and assert, “[I’ll go for] you and the opportunity.” She nestles up to him… and smacks his head.
Hyun-jae cracks open the door to see Woo-seung and Ji-hoon giggle together on the roof deck. He smiles, then heads back inside with the pair of cans of beer in his hand.
In the morning, Woo-seung proposes a round of rock-paper-scissors where the loser has to take out the trash. She lets Ji-hoon off the hook since the rest of them are tenants here. MC Drill and Ji-hoon aren’t surprised when she loses with her go-to move of scissors, and Hyun-jae loudly revels that he’s the king of this game. Woo-seung smiles, wondering how this childish Hyun-jae is the same one who stood up for her yesterday.
Woo-seung doesn’t end up taking out the trash, though, because Ji-hoo swoops in and offers to do it for her. His line that he’s happy to do it if she’ll accept his feelings for her spurs her to raise an arm as if to hit him, but he catches it, amused by her reaction.
Afterward, Ji-hoon swings by the bakery to tell Dad that he can’t help out because he has business to attend to today. Kwang-jae happily sends him on his way, but then sees Hyun-jae leaving too and flags him down.
Hyun-jae tries his best to remain patient when he’s reminded to keep a low profile, knowing that Kwang-jae is unaware that he helped write off his debt. He’s sick of Kwang-jae’s nagging, but he wants to know what Kwang-jae meant by his drunken apology to Hyun-jae the other night.
He doesn’t believe that those words were mere drunken ramblings and guesses that Kwang-jae’s subconscious must’ve felt sorry toward Hyun-jae for treating him so badly lately. He firmly tells Kwang-jae to be nicer to him and walks away.
Their conversation reminds Kwang-jae of when he learned of Bo-hee’s pregnancy and that Hyun-jae may be the baby’s father (also, is that Woo-seung’s mother?). He made sure no one outside this room would know of this, then tried to get a hold of Bo-hee.
But it was Hyun-jae who called him back, hoping to hear Kwang-jae’s voice one last time before going off the grid for a while. In the present, Kwang-jae reminisces that he had no idea that’d be the last time he’d hear from Hyun-jae. He wonders wistfully, “If you’d known [about Bo-hee], you wouldn’t have disappeared off like that, right?”
Hyun-jae is busy marveling at a music editing software in Young-jae’s office when he gets a call from a restricted number. Judging from the caller’s strained Seoul accent warning him about a secret bank account made in his name, this sounds like an obvious phishing scam.
But Hyun-jae hangs on the possibility that Other Hyun-jae may have stowed away some money and offers to meet in person. Flustered, the ajumma on the other end fires back in her country accent and hangs up.
Hyun-jae is ready to leave when Young-jae shows up moments later. Young-jae is annoyed when he’s asked for more money since he already paid off Kwang-jae’s debt, but Hyun-jae wants a credit card.
He complies and tells his secretary to give Hyun-jae whatever he wants until they figure out his true motives. Hearing that Hyun-jae lives in the rooftop apartment above the World Agency building tells Young-jae that seeing Hyun-jae isn’t a delusion, and the fact that Kwang-jae bought Hyun-jae’s cell phone leads him to believe that Kwang-jae is behind all of this.
After being passed over for a lunch invite with her team, Woo-seung heads down to the lounge for a drink. But the vending machine is busted so she shakes it, demanding that it give her a beverage. MJ finds her fighting with the machine, so he uses his knee to kick the machine and force it dispense a can (while masking his aching knee while she isn’t looking, heh).
Hyun-jae happens to pass by the lounge in time to see them together and scowls at how Woo-seung smiles at MJ. Convinced that Ji-hoon is going to lose her to the pretty boy, he interrupts their conversation and tells MJ that they have plenty of unfinished business.
Neither Woo-seung nor MJ knows what he means, and Hyun-jae rolls his eyes when MJ asks Woo-seung out to lunch and doesn’t let her off the hook for being busy because she should have lunch unless war breaks out.
That’s when Hyun-jae issues a refusal on Woo-seung’s behalf… because she has a standing lunch date with him (“War will break out if you don’t eat with me”). He shuts down MJ’s attempt to spend time with her for the rest of the day and drags Woo-seung away. MJ hears a clunk from the vending machine and he laughs to discover that Woo-seung also managed the kick trick.
Once they’re out in the hall, Woo-seung wrestles out of Hyun-jae’s grip and asks if he enjoys dragging her out of places. Hyun-jae argues that he was nipping any potential gripes from her about MJ in the bud, and she counters that she can stand up for herself.
Since they’re at work, Hyun-jae points out that she can’t freely call him Thumbs Up here. His suggestion of calling him by his funny-sounding name of Da-bong makes her scoff, and she sarcastically agrees to show him respect. Promising to call her bosses, he orders her to spend the rest of the day with him and drags her out the door.
They end up shopping for a new wardrobe for Hyun-jae while Woo-seung’s job is to clap like a seal and shower him with compliments at every outfit he tries on. She grows weary as the makeover sequence continues, but a simple blue linen shirt and khaki pants combo leaves her speechless. He snaps her back to reality with the reminder to give him two thumbs up, then remarks that she’s in dire need of a fashion upgrade too.
He argues that the way she dresses affects the company’s image, so they agree to a round of rock-paper-scissors where the loser must do everything the winner says. Woo-seung puts out her go-to move of scissors, which loses to Hyun-jae’s rock.
He waits outside for Woo-seung to appear in a flowy ivory dress and heels and says that her makeup could be better too. He orders her to follow him with their shopping bags while Young-jae is bombarded with context text notifications of Hyun-jae’s transactions.
Hyun-jae and Woo-seung end up at a makeup store, where he has her try on the lip tint. When she puts it on, Hyun-jae bluntly says he’s a terrible liar and confesses, “You look pretty to a truly shocking degree.”
He buys out the entire line and stuffs the basket with even more products, and when Woo-seung insists on paying, he reminds her that she lost the best, so she has to listen to him.
Meanwhile, Ji-hoon gets his photo taken at a studio, then heads in for an interview at Hye-ri’s former agency. Asked why he thinks he never got to debut, Ji-hoon answers that he thought effort was all that mattered, but he realized that he always lacked a sense of certainty at the last second, and that made him doubt whether or not he deserved to be on stage.
“What about now?” his interviewer asks. “Do you have a sense of certainty?” Ji-hoon smiles and confidently answers, “Yes.”
EPISODE 22 RECAP
Woo-seung and Hyun-jae spend their afternoon in an indoor shopping center, where she warns him against making her pay for his credit card bill later. He stops them in front of a sticker photo booth, amazed by the idea of instantly developed photos.
She refuses to come inside with him to partake in a kiddie activity, but the real child is Hyun-jae, who throws a tantrum right then and there. He stops the waterworks when she finally agrees, and they head inside to pose with funny props. He then leaves a photo of them on the board amidst countless others.
Woo-seung checks her watch and drops all the shopping bags as soon as the clock strikes six and her workday is over. Picking up the bags, Hyun-jae proposes that they go out for dinner because there’s someplace he wants to take her.
He drives Young-jae’s car (leaving Young-jae without a way to leave work, ha) and takes them to the Chinese restaurant in the middle of nowhere. Woo-seung’s stomach growls too much to protest, and Hyun-jae wakes the sleeping elderly restaurant owner to order two bowls of jajangmyun.
Woo-seung can’t shake off the eerie feeling that she’s been to this restaurant before, and Hyun-jae admits that he came across this place before and wondered if it was the same one from Woo-seung’s story about her father. When their food arrives, he pointedly notes the fried egg on top of their noodles while Woo-seung looks over at another table where a father eats with his young daughter.
Emotions caught in her throat, Woo-seung picks up her chopsticks, and Hyun-jae smiles warmly when she admits she thinks this is the same restaurant she ate at with her father as a girl. One bite is enough for Woo-seung to confirm the theory, and she keeps her tears at bay while she eats.
Afterward, she admits that it was worth going out of their way to eat here. Hyun-jae says this was the best jajangmyun he’s ever had in his life.
Ji-hoon receives a text from Hye-ri’s former agency, Ssen Entertainment, informing him that he’s been accepted into the debut team. He hears Woo-seung and Hyun-jae arrive together, and she takes her shopping bags before heading into her room.
He’s confused when Hyun-jae says Ji-hoon should be grateful to him for spending so much time with Woo-seung today, but he does knock at her door a little later to tell her his good news. She congratulates him for being accepted into the biggest entertainment agency in Korea, and he says he still has one more dream to chase after: her.
She waves him away because she’s too tired to hit him for another cheesy line, but she does give him an enthusiastic thumbs up. He returns with a peace sign (which also look like scissors in rock-paper-scissors).
Woo-seung has trouble with her door the next morning, so she wedges a folded piece of paper between the door and frame. Out in the living room, MC Drill has Hyun-jae check his incoming text, only to literally roll over when it’s a notice for the reserve forces training. Hyun-jae asks if MC Drill already completed his military service, but the latter laughs it off.
Kwang-jae finds Bo-hee in the bakery and asks if she doesn’t need to head into work at Star Punch, believing that she already signed her contract. She teases that sounds like him wanting her to leave and mentions that she heard Kwang-jae didn’t give Young-jae a piece of his mind the last time he saw red.
Kwang-jae announces that he’s going on a fishing trip and declines her company. He tells her not to mind him, but him repeating that only makes her more concerned.
MC Drill packs up his things and lies that he’ll be away for a night for a family wedding. Hyun-jae says it’ll be better if Drill never comes back, but we can see his camouflage fatigues peeking out of his bag.
Ji-hoon helps Dad load the car for his fishing trip, then asks to tag along. He assures Dad that he doesn’t have to make it to today’s audition and runs upstairs to grab his things, where he tells Woo-seung that he’ll be away for a night. Picking up on her dismay, he asks if that means she’ll miss him.
She scowls, then hands him a bottle of mouthwash. He asks if she’s got a particular reason for him to be minty fresh. She hits him with her bag for that remark, and before he leaves, Ji-hoon makes plans to see a movie with her when he returns.
Later that night at Star Punch, Hyun-jae catches Woo-seung heading out to run a coffee errand. He accompanies her (but doesn’t help her carry the cups) and points out a kimbap store with a line out the door. Woo-seung recognizes it as a famous eatery but admits she never tried the food because the line was always too long.
Kwang-jae and Ji-hoon fish by the Han River, where Ji-hoon notes that Dad always goes fishing when something worries him. Dad admits that fishing helps clear his mind, but he’s pleased to hear that Ji-hoon passed his audition at Ssen Entertainment.
His many years of road manager experience tells him that Ji-hoon will find success, and he agrees to help Ji-hoon in any way he can. He promises to put in a good word with his contacts at Ssen, but that’s when Ji-hoon says he won’t be joining that company because he wants Dad to be in charge of his debut.
Dad looks back at him in surprise, and Ji-hoon explains that he met lots of company bigwigs, but no one was as good as Dad. He even considers this fishing trip as an audition. Aw.
Hyun-jae is miffed when he text Woo-seung and learns that she’s studying at the library. He takes out his annoyance on the many customers outside the famous kimbap store, and then gets annoyed at himself for remembering that Woo-seung wanted to try the kimbap here.
Telling himself that it isn’t like him to wait in a long line for hours, he walks away. Cut to: Hyun-jae waiting in line like everyone else. LOL. Next thing we know, he’s back home with the kimbap in hand. You goof.
He’s massaging his aching legs when he hears the rain outside. He wonders if Woo-seung has an umbrella and convinces himself not to worry because she always thinks ahead. He sprawls out on the bed as a clap of thunder roars.
However, Woo-seung is without an umbrella. She waits outside the library, then takes a few steps, contemplating whether or not to run and use her textbook for cover, when a voice calls out, “Oy, Part-timer!”
It’s Hyun-jae, who get slightly flustered when she asks what he’s doing here. He claims he went out for a walk like he does every night. Suuurrre.
He berates her for staying out this late and forgetting an umbrella when she looks like the type to think ahead. He pulls her in closer to stay dry, and though she was angry with him at first, she thanks him for picking her up.
It’s only when they return home do they realize that they’re alone in this apartment tonight. Hyun-jae doesn’t think it makes a difference but calls Woo-seung out for finding it awkward. She denies anything of the sort, but keeps her distance as she tells him to stay away from her room and converse over text until morning.
Unfortunately for Woo-seung, she’s locked out of her room because that wedge of paper she used has popped out. Hyun-jae concludes that they’ll need to call a locksmith tomorrow, which means they’ll have to sleep together in this space.
Woo-seung stammers nervously and then rushes to pull the room divider closed, telling Hyun-jae to sleep on the floor tonight. Her mouth drops when he asks if she wants to wash up first, skeeved out even more.
But Hyun-jae doesn’t mean anything else by it and heads into the bathroom. It’s then Woo-seung sees the kimbap on his bed and he pops his head out moments later claiming that he picked some up for her because the line happened to be short. D’aw.
While Woo-seung tries to convince herself that she sees Ji-hoon, MC Drill, and Hyun-jae in the same way, Hyun-jae admires his physique in the bathroom and flexes in front of the mirror. But then he sees a cockroach on the floor and he runs out of the room, screaming in terror.
Woo-seung also screams to see him in nothing but a towel around his waist. He hides behind her and yells at her to get rid of the bug. They run around in circles until she slips, grabs hold of his towel, and then falls on her back. A naked Hyun-jae falls on top of her.
She protests when Hyun-jae tells her to close her eyes, thinking that he might kiss her. But he points out his buck naked state and she hilariously looks down to confirm before letting out a high-pitched shriek. LOL.
He instructs her to keep his eyes closed while he runs to get dressed, and when they lie down to sleep later, Hyun-jae sneers, “Pervert.” They bicker about who was to blame for the towel incident, and then Hyun-jae coughs and tells her to sleep.
Neither of them can fall asleep that easily, and Hyun-jae later asks if Woo-seung is asleep yet. She answers that she is, and he figures that she’s studying again. That’s exactly what Woo-seung is doing, but she grows worried whenever she hears Hyun-jae launch into another coughing fit.
He thinks he can sleep off his oncoming cold, but Woo-seung pulls open the divider and discovers that he’s running a fever. She chides him for not mentioning that he was sick and repeats his words that people shouldn’t put up with pain.
She prepares a cold towel and places it on his neck and wonders if they should go to a hospital. Hyun-jae stubbornly refuses to go, claiming that will only ruin his image. But he does confess that the towel feels nice.
Hyun-jae wakes the next morning to see Woo-seung curled up against the bed, asleep. He gently pulls the hair away from her face, and his touch wakes her. They look at one another, and Hyun-jae’s heart beats a little faster.
Epilogue
Dressed in his uniform, MC Drill takes a break from reserve forces training. Does his name tag say Lee Won-bin? He’s approached by a pair of girls looking for the army basecamp—ha, it’s Kwang-jae’s idol girl group who are as surprised to see him as he is to see them.
Quickly sizing up the situation, they realize that MC Drill lied about his age, but he points out that they snuck out here without telling Kwang-jae. Unfortunately for him, the girls have one last card: “Does Ji-hoon know you’re an old man who’s been in the military?” His lip quivering, MC Drill sadly admits, “No, he doesn’t.”
COMMENTS
Poor MC Drill. He really does get the short end of the stick in this series as a minor character, but whose dream is just as worthy as anyone else in this world. I’m almost positive that Drill also got a haircut that went understated in this hour, and it saddens me that he has to lie about his age in order to get a shot at being on stage. Keeping one’s real age a secret isn’t anything new in the industry, but I imagine it’ll eventually come to light in his friendship with Ji-hoon.
It was only the other week when Ji-hoon learned the valuable lesson of seizing an opportunity whenever it presented himself. I admired how he took life by his own reins and took the chance of making his feelings known to Woo-seung, but his overall dream became temporarily muddied after he quit his trainee life. Even with his newfound internet fame thanks to his good looks, we were left out of what Ji-hoon wanted to do next with his life. I was surprised when he showed up to the interview at Ssen Entertainment because he still seemed unsure until Woo-seung prodded him to jump at that opportunity.
But I was even more surprised when he chose to spend time with Dad instead and take the chance to debut under World Agency than a larger agency. Perhaps it speaks to Ji-hoon’s sense of loyalty and his attempt to amend his relationship with his dad, but the business side of me is thinking that he has to take advantage of that short-wave of fame while it’s still around.
Teaming up with World Agency does give Kwang-jae more motivation as well, since he’s still trying to let Bo-hee move on to what he thinks are bigger and better things for her. I don’t think he’ll be quite as happy when he hears that Hyun-jae is using Young-jae for temporary monetary gain, though I really enjoy watching Hyun-jae rack up a high credit card bill for the man who made money off of his compositions.
Now that Hyun-jae has realized his own feelings for Woo-seung, things are about to get real complicated in our love square. How Woo-seung is lucky enough to have three suitors vying for her attention is beyond me, but I suppose some of us are just that lucky.

I still like the show, but something is lacking. I don't know... If I have to put a blame, it might be the romance who took more time and as cute as Dda bong can be, it just feel not right

The romance doesn't bother me at all (maybe because I am in Da Bong - Woo Seung ship, which I know will eventually sink) - but seeing this week's preview, I realise I am doubly excited to see the mystery is going back to be in the plot next episode.

Because Ji-hoon has not started disappearing yet. Which means that somehow, Hyun-jae has to go back to the past and get with Bo-hee.

It seems like the time travel rules are letting the full outworking of the past co-exist with the new reality of the present. I can't see HJ going back to the past and deliberately getting into an indifferent relationship with BH. His life perspective would change if he went back.

I agree. While I love the show while I am watching it...I feel like as a whole it is not going anywhere. I feel like if it were in a different format: like a sticom or slice of life docu-drama it would work so much better. I think it's too bad they didn't go full out, classic docu-drama.

There's just no point in even trying to resist YSY in this drama. He's like the personification of aegyo. I really did start out this drama liking the Ji-hoon and Woo-seung pairing, but it's hard to argue that she and Hyun-jae aren't a better fit in the end.
I'm still unclear about so many things regarding the relationships in this drama, but I kind of love that I still have no clue how it's all going to work out! And I was so happy that Ji-hoon reached out to his dad to represent him, because their relationship needed that moment of resolution after some of the struggles they've had; it was just such a sweet moment.
I just wish we had about 50 more episodes to go; this drama really, really could've been longer without suffering a loss of integrity at all!! The things that make it great would be sustainable over a much longer time frame than they've given themselves.

I agree about getting his dad to represent him. He wants to bring up his whole family with his fame, not just himself. I think it's a really healthy choice, even if it might take a little longer than signing with a bigger agency.

I love all the father-son moments between Kwang-jae and Ji-hoon and it was really so sweet of Ji-hoon to tag along and ask his dad about his worries, he might've wanted to talk about himself but he also remembered that Kwang-jae was going through a tough time! I kind of wish Kwang-jae is his real father but I don't know how could that happen!

Everything is telling us HJ gets the girl. "Fate" gets in the way of JH while it helps HJ. WS has started to fall for HJ. And she's told JH at every opportunity that she only wants him in her life as family and as a friend. The father son thing is really a non-issue. HJ is the same 'real' age as JH and WS.
I sure wish JH would stop chasing her. He's disrespecting what she's clearly told him in order to force his interest onto her. And when he's jealous - instead of giving her the freedom to choose who/what she wants - he tries to eliminate the competition behind her back. If two guys like the same girl, shouldn't the girl get to decide which one she might want to date?
The weird thing is that the show's audience doesn't seem to be calling-out the character for doing this. Are they willing to overlook it because the character is being played earnestly by a handsome and popular actor? Shouldn't principles transcend that? Or, let's look at it this way: if PSH was playing this character, would the conduct seem more offensive?

I agree that JH acted badly in blocking HJ and just telling HJ he was disliked and should move. It's really unlike his earlier, nice personality. He's trying on confidence and asking for what he wants, but he's still learning at it. Going after what you want doesn't mean you always get it or that you can change other's decisions. It is a good way to live, but you have to accept the lack of control you have on the outcome. It will be interesting too with the realization that HJ is his dad how things pan out from here. Hopefully JH chooses more character growth.

I have to admit that recently I was a bit (okay, a lot, really) frustrated by the love triangle in this show. Hyun-jae and Woo-seung's interaction used to be so much fun and uniquely them, but now they played every cliche tropes possible in the span of 1 hour. For a "variety-drama" that boasted sitcom feeling, I expected them to handle it differently. Sitcom isn't without its triangle and family angst, but usually they have their own understated, unexpected way to address those.
On another note, I'm excited to have MC Drill back. Where were you, bro? I can't wait to see how his friends would react to his age issue (I knew it that he was older than them). And seeing that the Helter Skelter girls were the one who found that out, it would be potentially hilarious.
I'm also glad to see Ji-hoon and Woo-seung's interaction nowadays. Theirs turns light, joking but never brushing off the fact that Ji-hoon likes her and I love this new development. It's better than when he was still pining for her. And I couldn't be any happier when he asked help from Kwang-jae. It's about time, boy. Now if only they could give me more of Mal-sook and Grandpa too... I miss them.

I wasn't frustrated by the triangle before but this set of episodes, like you said, "played every cliche tropes possiblein the span of 1 hour". It was doing it all in a straightforward traditional rom-com way. Now I'm suddenly really annoyed even though YSY is hella adorable.
That mid-afternoon date/shopping scene lasted waaay too long. I wonder if the low ratings (which they should have anticipated given the time slot) and the Yoon Son Ha's scandal led them to increased PPLs and to aggresively pursue a more traditional rom-com direction with the series' fave chaarcter?
I agree with you on being happy that MC Drill is back. I'm falling in love with him. He's so adorable. He should be in like every funny drama. I also missed grandpa and Malsook in this episode.

What gets me about all the romance tropes is that they would be just as romantic if not more so if they would just subvert, parody, or do something else with them other than play them 100% straight. Other dramas are more than capable of doing this, My Only Love Song did it a lot and Bride of the Water God even did it a bit too. When there was a romance cliche it was usually interrupted by a joke or changed in someway to be funny, and guess what, it was still romantic! It's like the writers do not understand how to have moments that are both funny and romantic. It's not that hard.

It would have been great if they put a twist to the parody after treating us to some swoony seconds with YSY, e.g. him using a 3-fold umbrella that flips with the wind ending his chivalrous romantic act and them running/walking together under the rain or waiting for it to stop somewhere (rather than that prolonged shopping/dating scene). That would have been more hilarious/relatable and explains better why HJ had to run a fever. There is always one with the weaker resistance, and often our best intentions do not always end well.

To those who find the father-son love triangle icky, there is a simple solution: JH is NOT HJ's son.
I think the entire drama is set up for this plot twist. At the end of the day, HJ is only a 23-year-old who found love in the most unlikely place.

I was originally very dismissive of the theory that JH may not be HJ's dad. With the flashback, it seems like everyone else decided that the father of BH's baby was HJ based on "well...who else could it have been?" Now I'm not sure...
I think having both HJ and JH be the same age makes the triangle not that icky. It's no different than 2 brother going after the same girl.

Well yes, if that were the only thing we had to go on that Hyun-jae is Ji-hoon's father, it would be pretty sketchy evidence. But we also have Bo-hee, who should know if no one else does. If Hyun-jae is not Ji-hoon's father, that means that Bo-hee has been mourning and carrying a torch for some random co-worker for 20+ years rather than her baby daddy, as well as raising her son to believe that he is this random co-worker's son. It just doesn't make sense.

What's icky is not that they could be the father and son, but the fact that the made us think that they are, and then introduced a love triangle between the apparent father, son and a girl? And it is not funny at all, also brings a weird taste in mouth, that there is anything funny in this possible scenario. To make us think that they are father and son, and then make both of them fall for the same girl, it is kind of off putting IMO. I don't see any humor in this.
I thought this show was about a father who time travels to meet his same aged son and change his life for better, and also the people around him. And the whole concept seemed so unique and refreshing, also the fact that something new was happening in kdramaland for the first time. Now it's another clichéd girl meets boy drama lol. For a show which promised to run on a variety angle and show a different take on idols life, this show is sure becoming as conventional as possible. Also not to add the sudden inclusion of romance between WS and HJ is so random and it doesn't go with the previous friendly rapport they had going on. I wish the transition was smoother and the show didn't go from 1 to 100 within an episode time.
At least one thing for sure, still see more chemistry between WS- JH, and wow, what a waste of ji hoon's character. We haven't seen the story shedding any light on his life for last couple of episodes, and now the show is all about HJ and WS. I hope YSY chooses his drama more carefully next time.

YES YES YES All of this. This is all why I am not watching anymore. I feel cheated honestly, like I was promised a fun unique concept that would focus mostly on comedy and family/friendship with just a sprinkle of romance and that's what I got for the first half of the show. Then it took a complete 180 into a conventional romcom. If it had been set up like a conventional romcom I wouldn't be so disappointed and I would buy the relationship a lot more, but it wasn't. You can't just change course when the foundation wasn't there to begin with. WS/HJ are all cliche and no substance. I rarely have a problem shipping the main leads in dramas and believing their romance, but I just don't see it here. It feels so forced.

@peichi I see people going with statements about the dramas which the drama isn't. But obviously they don't leave the opportunity to keep saying that we hate the drama just because JH-WS isn't the end game or because our otp isn't working. Which 'is' frustrating to hear honestly by now. The show promised to be something which it is not, and that's my main beef with it, nothing else. Heck, I would have loved it if there wasn't any romance going on, and if it had more of hyun Jae's earlier antics from '90s, and the hijinks that followed everywhere he went. Now it's 90% set on romance, 10% on the other people from the ensemble.

Yeah, the main reason I was for JH-WS to begin with was because I felt it was the simplest and easiest loveline to make work without focusing too much on the romance and detracting from the comedy. It could happen quietly in the background, and since they had been friends so long it wouldn't be necessary to use all the romance cliches to force skinship and closeness between them. From the beginning I didn't think HJ/WS would be possible as endgame without dedicating a lot of screentime to them and I was right. Worse I don't think the screentime to HJ/WS has been very helpful to their romantic development, again it's all cliche and no substance. I would definitely have been fine with no romance at all, but I felt that's not a likely possibility from the beginning, so I jumped on JH/WS ship. But had JH been under the umbrella and doing all these other cliche scenes with WS I'd be just as critical.

Ooh. I think there has been more substance to Hyun Jae's interactions with her than her interactions with Min Jae. Min Jae is like a brother. Hyun Jae is like the guy you want to marry.
Hyun Jae is talented, self-assured, proactive, inquisitive and has far-reaching horizons. Min Jae is loyal, earnest and works hard; but he he has big ambitions yet never expands his horizons beyond his small sphere of life. Because he doesn't seek to understand the broader world around him, he makes chronically bad decisions. He will likely always be frustrated by his inability to achieve prolonged success. That'd make him a hard man to live with after the hubris of their 20's is over and middle age sets-in.
And Hyun Jae has moved beyond his selfish ways and is willing to sacrifice for her. Even if it means doing mundane things like waiting in a forever-long line for kimbap. That's something he's never done for anyone before.
Also her character is better-matched intellectually with Hyun Jae. They're both book smart and street smart. While Min Jae is only book smart.
All of their trivial interactions told us those things.

Perhaps it's your preconceived notions of what this drama should be and shouldn't be that clouded your judgement. HJ was never supposed to be their saviour. If there's only one message this drama wants to convey, it is that you need to step up and seize opportunities yourself, and not idly wait for a saviour to come and turn your life around.
*SPOILER*
And as if to answer your frustration, 1994's HJ wrote in his notebook "I'm nothing. I'm not a saviour either." He's only human, and tbh he doesn't owe anyone a living.
As far as I know, YSY is doing a great job portraying Hyun-jae and most people on naver are raving about his performance too.

What's wrong with wanting a drama to go a certain way (which seemed to be the most plausible direction based on the premise) and being disappointed and frustrated when it goes in a completely different direction? It's not preconceived notions of what the drama should/shouldn't be, it's having expectations based on the premise and not having those expectations met.

It depends. If this was like a "Producers" situation where the novel mockumentary approach was abandoned partway, I think that's a legit complaint.
But I don't think this drama's been particularly uneven - most complaints appear to be disappointment over a certain loveline, which is less understandable for me. I'm not interested in watching dramas that are basically paint-by-numbers, I like it when relationships develop in different ways from the initial setup.

Nothing wrong with that, except that you're trying to force a square onto a circle and everywhere I go I see you complaining why the circle hasn't become a square yet, when it was never meant to be a square in the first place.
What's most unfortunate is that while you try to twist the writer's arm to write the story you want to see, you miss out on the aspirational messages in this drama: Live in the present, seize every opportunity, be honest to yourself, make every second count.
But to each his own, feel free to continue writing fanfics of what this drama should've been, it's a free world.

@Miranda - Can we stop acting like all the complaints are just because JH/WS isn't endgame? That's so not it. (although to be clear I find it tiresome that people insist shipping isn't a valid reason to not like a drama, I think it's just the same as any other reason) I'd literally be just as frustrated if all of these cliche romance moments were between JH/WS. It's hard to deny that this drama has shifted from being a comedy with some smaller romance elements, to a conventional romcom. If you like it that way, fine, but understand that a lot of people won't because they liked it better when it was the variety drama it was advertised as. It's not really about the relationships developing in different ways from the premise, but about the shift in genre that frustrates me and I think most others complaining.
Miranda
July 9, 2017 at 11:59 AM
@peichi, I do get your point that some people might have signed on for "variety drama" and feel let down by the romcom turn, but for my part (and it felt like many others) we weren't at all sure what "variety drama" meant. After the first few episodes it looked like it meant a drama with meta variety shout-outs thrown in, which I was okay with. But the shift to romcom hasn't been a dramatic tone shift for me.
But that complaint doesn't seem particularly genuine to me in this circumstance, and more like a cover for the genuine reason, which is a ship disappointment. Basically I think people are a 3/10 on being ticked at the romcom development, but 9/10 irritated at the Hyun Jae development. But when defending their irritation, they're flipping those ratios and claiming that their actual problem is the romcom. That's what I'm getting from weeks of reading this comments section, where there was some serious investment in the Ji Hoon angle that looks like it's paralleling the discontent today.
fay17

but the shift to romcom hasn't been a dramatic tone shift for me.
---
@miranda, it has been a complete shift in the overall tone of the drama imo. Just see how much WS-HJ moments now the show has compared to last weeks. I don't mind romance, but now it's all romance, with no other plot going on. The romance could be a subplot, but now it is the main plot.
I do want to know though what your pov is, of the drama, I have noticed that you are not giving any opinion of yourselves, only been dissecting other's opinions. I think more or less everyone has a bias, me too, and you too, I'm sure, that is not the problem. The problem is the show wanted to sell us the 'unique father-son drama' and including time travel-family bonding- love- friendships in the mix', which isn't the case anymore. Anyone who has seen the show from the start can notice it, I think.
Miranda
July 9, 2017 at 12:56 PM
@peichi, sure - my position on watching this drama was "I like Cha Tae Hyun, I like Dong Gu, I definitely like time-travel trickery, and I'm interested to see what this 'variety comedy' idea is about". Since all of those elements are still in play, I'm pretty content - the only part that's been boring for me is the Grandpa/Mal Sook stuff.
As I watched, the way Hyun Jae was acting made me feel like he was starting to like Woo Seung, and it felt like she was heading in the same direction. So the way all of this has developed is pretty natural for me - the two of them have been on a collision course for a while. But if Hyun Jae stepped back because of paternity issues and in two years she was with Ji Hoon or even MJ, I can't say I'd object, I'd just want it to feel like a logical development in the story.
So there you go. If anything my bias would be what I think I see developing naturally in the script. To me, it's made sense.

'Perhaps it's your preconceived notions of what this drama should be and shouldn't be that clouded your judgement'----
It's not about who becomes whose savior, and the savior thing didn't just come out of nowhere, since we have been told from day one that HJ is JH's father, and in the earlier episodes, well actually mostly from EP 1-10, the show focused on hyun jae showing interest in ji hoon's failure, his ups and downs, and asking to everyone around more about him. The show's main premise was signalled at them, (being the father and son pair that they was).
So the 'savior' thing I mentioned is because, who else to look up to for inspiration, if not his father? Given the fact that until now ji hoon has been living like a ghost , he dropped his college to be a singer, his mom is a failure too, and he hasn't even met his father. And the first line he said meeting hyun jae, 'that's how I meet my father', once we have been introduced to that thought, it is pretty normal I think to expect that 'ji hoon's savior will be hyun jae, his father'.Or that some mysterious divine prank has been played, and God has given ji hoon a chance to meet his father from the past and turn his life around. So I don't think that ''seize opportunities yourself, and not idly wait for a saviour to come' concept in the drama works, that you're hinting at. As we have seen how JH, his friend mc drill, KJ, the grandpa or malsook, each are trying to be the pillar of support for the other. So the way you say eveyone should try to excel on his own, jusy gives a pretty dark and depressing idea about life...where we shouldn't depend on anyone else, excepy our ownself? So one line in hyun Jae's notebook doesn't define everything about the drama I think--- but each to their own. By now I don't think the drama has any strong concept going on at all. Also the problem is that how long they played that father-son attachment as a 'bait' to make us invest in them badly.
To add, I don't have any problem seeing the fact that he acts good either. I just want him to choose a better drama next time with a stronger plot with the extra oomph factor. Which TBH sadly doesn't have, IMO. Netizen's comments don't define success of a drama either. I would love to see him do something like a proper romcom again without any nauseating factors involved.

But to me that's not really a twist, it's an anti-twist. It's taking a fun unique twist in the concept (having a 90's idol travel forward to the present and meet his idol trainee grown-up son he didn't even know he had) and taking it away. Why bother setting up such an unusual plot point and spending a good deal of time on it only to go "jk!" at the end? It's really the least interesting and most unnecessary twist I can think of. If it's true then it would pretty much encapsulate my frustration with this show, we thought in the beginning it'd be a variety drama, a comedy with a focus on family/friendships and just a sprinkle of romance, but THERE'S A TWIST: it's really just a conventional romcom. I'm not sure what to think re: JH's parentage, mostly because in the first episode, it was JH narrating "That was the first time I met my father", which signals to me anyway that JH eventually finds out about HJ being his father. Not gonna lie, I kinda thought it would've happened by now and we'd get some weird but funny father-son bonding on the rooftop. This show has gone in a different direction than I anticipated, but I find this show really easy to watch and also very enjoyable, so while I'm watching it, it doesn't bother me. I really like all the characters, and I think the chemistry and comedic timing between the cast is one of the best I've seen. It's only when I start to count down how little time there is left till the ending, I get nervous because there is still so much story left to tell. In any case, I'm willing to hold back judgement until the series is over, but I will be disappointed if there aren't answers to the big questions posed in the first half of the show.

My crazy theory is that Hyun-Jae is Woo-Seung's father and that Kwang-Jae is actually Ji-Hoon's biological father.
This would explain why so much focus has been placed on HJ/WS' relationship. From what we've seen so far, in contrast to the physical chemistry JH/WS share, HJ's feelings for WS mostly range from adulation (not unlike the way an adoring father would view his daughter as the most beautiful person on earth) to an instinctive desire to protect and care for her. Both HJ and WS have lived their lives without the kind of familial warmth JH has, so it follows that they are struggling to process the nature of their deepening love for one another.
The show has also been intentionally coy about JH's true parentage. Bo-Hee's lingering feelings for HJ has always struck me as genuine but one-sided, so I'm guessing it was a case of mistaken identity and BH somehow ended up sleeping with JH's father under the impression that he was HJ. My money is on KJ since we've seen that he has a history of blacking out when drunk and of jumping to conclusions to his own detriment. The watch could be a major red herring, since in the flashback we saw that HJ gifted KJ with the EXACT. SAME. WATCH (albeit with different initials).

I don't think Hyun-jae is Woo-seung's father, that sounds a little too far-fetched to me because what Hyun-jae is feeling towards her isn't just a sense of protectiveness or care, he's falling for her and he's trying to convince himself that he isn't, he keeps doing all of these things for her saying he's doing them for Ji-hoon but we know that he just wants to be with her! Also, I think Woo-seung remembered how her father looked, she remembers going to the Jjajjagmyung restaurant with him so I'm sure she remembers him too!

These episodes were full of makeovers hahaha. Hyun Jae's wardrobe was the best change, and Ji Hoon's haircut was the worst lol.
I might be wrong, but so far, if there's anything I learned from watching Kdramas, it's that the guy who shows up with the umbrella gets the girl lol. Anytime Hyun Jae looks at Woo Seung in that way or does something for her, I feel my heart skip a beat, but then I think of Ji Hoon, and it makes me feel quite sad for him. Woo Seung is so lucky.(Oh no, I think I've jumped ship hahaha)
Bless this show for giving us Yoon Shi Yoon in a towel admiring himself, and for your usual naked cohabitation hijinks. Even when I could guess how things will turn out, it was still such a good laugh!! Lol why does that gag never seem to get old for me hahahaha

Ji Hoon's haircut is AWFUL. It's like a bowl cut. It's seriously distracting. He's a handsome kid but yeesh. At least the scenes of him lightly teasing Woo Seung were delightful - when his whole face lights up and he laughs you really understand how he could be idol material. Less so when he's constantly worried.

True... but he's also feeding her his own coffee as they walk, and neither of them seem freaked out about cooties.
I also really liked how Ji Hoon's flirting has turned so carefree. He doesn't seem so deathly serious about it anymore, and that really helps now that the Hyun Jae loveline has kicked into gear. I'm convinced at this point that Hyun Jae's going to stay in the future, with maybe a quick cameo back to the past to place that phone call and abandon the car. But I can't imagine him without a phone and audio mixing software anymore, it would be too cruel to send him back now.

I was also dismissive of the theory that HJ's disappearance is HJ making a final trip back to the present to stay forever. His last call to KJ sounds like he wanted to big farewell to young KJ before seeing him again in the future. I guess that's the only way to make sure everyone stays intact. But does that mean since HJ is gone on paper, HJ will have to remain as "Da Bong" forever?

I'm kind of disappointed in the direction the show is going. 5 episodes ago I would be giggling over the Woo Seung/Hyun Jae interactions but I spent most of the episode wanting to skip all their scenes. For a show which advertised a comedy and did such a great show in the beginning, it was a let down to see them going a tradition Kdrama romance route. Like atleast throw a curve ball or do a parody like the grandpa/mal sook/mal sook's crush scene.
Speaking of which... I WAITED A WHOLE WEEK FOR THIS SHOW AND DIDNT GET ANY MAL SOOK/GRANDPA SCENES
When Hyun Jae called Ji Hoon "ungrateful" and said that he was doing all of this for Ji Hoon I had to stop the episode and calm down. There is no way Hyun Jae believes that spending all of this time with Woo Seung, calling her pretty, and taking her out to eat is for Ji Hoon's benefit. If he was doing this for Ji Hoon he would've backed up a long time ago. And Hyun Jae has acknowledged that Ji Hoon is his son, but he still pursued Woo Seung. And I can't forgive that?. There should be some moral code that says "don't date your son's crush"

I agree with you :( especially the last part. Now I pity Jihoon a lot. He lost his debut opportunity because of Wooseung and still, it doesn't work.
Why am I starting to dislike Wooseung too....? :( I don't know. Maybe it's because she knows Jihoon's feeling and does nothing (doesn't really appreciate his effort especially when she knew what Jihoo had given up for her.) and now she's busy being lovebirds with Hyunjae.
Hyunjae...rather than spending time with Wooseung, flirting...why don't you try harder to solve your own mystery? At least, try to find out more information about Jihoon-is-my-son.

I have started skipping their scenes. With five or six romantic tropes in this one episode, I thought the writers were doing it for laughs at first but then when I realized is a serious part of the plot I became kind of horrified, not to mention disappointed. If Hyun-jae was not portrayed from the beginning as Ji-Hoon's father, I would have likely bought into this romance. But knowing that this is a love triangle involving a father and son, I can't help but feel uncomfortable. Unfortunate but true.

Yes.........I have skipped everything between them as well. It supposed to be a love triangle among Hyunjae-Bohee-KWangjae and Wooseung-Jihoon-Hyeri. But now it is so much complicated.
All the young guys (Jihoon, Hyunjae, MJ) are chasing on Wooseung right now. I am somehow glad seeing how MC Drill is still kind of annoyed of Wooseung's existence instead of chasing her too.
Because I don't see what makes MJ and Hyunjae could fall for her.
While, Bohee and especially Hyeri, poor them.

Hyun Jae was so swoony during the umbrella scene. I like his funny banter with Woo Seung and seeing them play games like rock-paper-scissors. I'd rather see them being friends than being a couple.
This drama has changed into a typical rom-com. I was mildly annoyed when they used the common concept of a person getting sick after being out in the rain and having another character take care of them. Ugh. I want more humor and wacky, cheesy jokes.

Drill has been notified of his reservist training. After the Korean men go out of the army they still have to do reservist training for a year or two. (Am I right?) So that would mean, he is already done with his enlistment and is lying about his age.

No, there are actually a few idols that went to army before debuting. It's more because of his age I think. We don't know yet how old he is, but it would mean he's older than Ji-hoon who is the oldest trainee. Remember they were both passed up for the next boy group debut, so they'd have to wait several years for the chance to debut again, so they would be pretty old for idols by then and even more likely to be passed up in favor of someone younger.

Hello! I've been stalking this site for over 6 years but I am a new commenter. I just wanted to say that I didn't know much about this show before and when it first started airing so I didn't have any expectations about it, but I would watch YSY in anything (even if it's him watching paint dry), so I'm just in it for the ride and although I don't know where it is going, I quite enjoy it! I didn't start expecting any traditional rom-com element either but I suspected there would be one because of the three gag kisses between YSY / LSY in the beginning! Anyway I think YSY / LSY are really selling it (and all the other products in this drama) and I can't wait to see where this ride will take us. Also, the cockroach / towel gag was completely eye-roll worthy but it made me burst out into loud gaffaws in the middle of the night so they really sold that too.

Not gonna lie but I'm fairly disappointed at the recent episodes. I was expecting to see some familial bonding between our two main guys, Hyunjae & Jihoon. Even if they're not father and son but the premise of the show initially was foreshadowing a bond between those and for them to develop some sort of friendship. And I was expecting a heartwarming comedy family drama. At least that was what I thought.
But now, it has pretty much turned into a standard rom com sprinkled with all the romantic cliches you could ever think of. I feel like it came out of nowhere. lol
But I'm not that surprised with the turn of events because comments regarding this show has always been bombarded with people wanting the Hyunjae and Wooseung romance to take off. It's pretty much all I read in every comments section. So I guess they wanted to please the viewers. *shrug*
I don't mind if they make the romance development subtle but right now it's a bit excessive. lol.

Then they suddenly dialing up the romance up to 11 on the 6th week out of an 8 week drama. Even if the writer had planned for a WS+HJ OTP all along, laying the romance on this thick so suddenly at this point in the drama where there are also like 5 other storylines going on felt out of left field.

I'm enjoying it too. I find the use of romance tropes also quite fun, so now I'm laughing at the same time that my heart flutters with WS-HJ interactions. Maybe it is because from the beginning I suspected that BH might be keeping a secret and JH would not be HJ son, and also because I jumped in WS-HJ ship since they went to Paju together...Moreover, I also believe that he will go back to 1993 and come back in 1994, since it is already a big hint that they said that he simply disappeared and the body was never found. So for me all is well and I will keep watching with hopes that this will end on a high note.

Omo! I felt exactly the same as you! I also expected the story in this way so I'm totally fine with the love line. Actually in d beginning, I knew there would be a loveline between HJ & WS so I never thought it's forced. LSY already admitted in an interview earlier that her character likes YSY. That's why I had not been disappointed with the show. I'm still enjoyed watching it. The latest ep hurt my heart so bad. Actually Hyun Jae is not selfish. He tried to avoid WS because JH told him to stop liking her. Now who's selfish? Even if u like a girl for 8 years doesnt mean u should tell others to stop liking her. Anyway, It's hard to ctrl yourself when u fall in love with someone. I've experienced it myself. You will become irrational. Even your mind tells u no u can't, your heart still yearns for it. Although HJ knows JH is his alleged son, he has no feelings taking care of him since he was a baby, he's just a normal 23 year old guy falling in love for a girl in the wrong place. We can't blame him for that.

I agree with you. I have always held onto the theory that Bo Hee is keeping a secret about the real father, and that the show trolled us into thinking HJ is JH's father. I'm even more convinced now that we know this random lady "thought" that HJ was the father. We'll find out next week if I'm right! I hope I am, because otherwise I'd have to join the rest of the commenters who are disappointed and find the love triangle weird... and I've enjoyed the show too much for it to punch me in the face at the end (the best hit? the sucker punch? please no!)
Anyway, aside from romance, Ji Hoon has stepped up to fight for his dream, so I'm holding out hope that World Entertainment recovers by the end. We may not get the band of misfits we wanted, but the show never set itself up for that. If every character seizes their dream in their own way I will consider that a positive ending.

I'm just hanging out enjoying the ride and Hyun-jae's hijinks -- and growing consideration for others, particularly when he took Woo-seung to the black bean noodle joint and stood in line to get the famous kimbap for her. Dang, that scene of his cockroach freakout. Talk about fancy footwork before the inevitable towel drop. ROFLMAO.
The umbrella scene was dynamite, too. Iconic indeed.
I'm just having a lot of fun watching all the characters as they navigate their lives. Well, I'm not that keen on Cathy, to be honest, and Young-jae is a weasel. But it's not like they're axe murderers.

I LOVE YSY!!.
This show seems to have lost track mid way with regards to the original premise (comedy with a mystery element) but no complains from me... As long as there are scenes of YSY looking oh so cute..i am watching it!
The umbrella scene n that blue shirt this week had me swooning:)

I'm OK as long as YSY doesn't get sideline. ❤I feel a little bad for the rest probably because of their limited screentimes, but YSY is the most established actor here (together with CTH) so it makes sense more viewers (not only koreans but also international fans) want his scenes more. I also tuned in for him and Lee Se Young. I didn't had high expectation for this drama anyway, so I was only disappointed with love triangle trope. I really dislike love triangle, but I also dislike best friend turn to lover plot, so I am unknowingly jump into HJ-WS ship & i'm happy with that ?
Of course this drama could have done better in some parts, but the least expectation made us easily pleased. My rule whenever I watch romcom/comedy drama.

I am watching this show for YSY and LSY. I'm happy he's front and center FINALLY. The middle third devoted to the JH and KJ's character and romantic interests was not that interesting to me. HJ's character was a caricature of the shallow idol with flashes of human emotion. The return of the mystery element and the triangle helped pick up the pace for me. I like that HJ and WS have unwittingly developed an interest in each other. And I like the HJ is more of a person now with talents and a brain.

Awww poor Ji hoon, I would have liked him to end up with WS but it seems like he's ending up with the trainee girl? ( i always forget her name)
I think too much time is being spent on the romance aspect, and the whole mystery part which was intriguing to me took a backseat.
I hope the next episodes get better.
Also I don't think HJ is the father of Ji hoon but if he isn't I'd be more sad for him because he was lead to believe HJ was his father by Bo hee and Gwang Jae, I think it's cruel of Bo hee to have done this if HJ really isn't the father unless she got raped? Which is even more sad.

I miss those days when hyun jae dropped on top of his memorial table and how much it made me laugh. Now it seems the other characters are all but forgotten. And plot? They made him join the agency just so he could have more skinship moments with the girl instead of investigating. I guess Jihoon is going to disappear in the future eps since there's no way HJ is going back to conceive him.

We don't know for sure that HJ is the dad. It is hinted in this episode that everyone is just making an assumption about HJ being the dad. However, I'm still worried that if HJ is truly the dad, then JH's existence would be wiped out.
However, time travel stories are always tricky and I feel like there are always loopholes in them. Maybe the past is fixed and there are several versions of HJ? Or maybe KJ and BH will get together and conceive a child who ends up being exactly like the JH we know. But then would it really be JH or just a clone?

Or... the typhoon split Hyun Jae into two people and threw one of them into the future. Clones would work too. (Why do I feel like we have made no progress with the crazy time-travel theories?)
Someone please just ask Bo Hee what happened in 1994. I am ok with the romance, but my patience runs thin with plots that depend on assumptions made for the last 20 years about a rather dim character.

kind of thought it's HJ/WS from the start.
HJ/WS: Remember the 3 accident kisses?them being thrown together all the time, like when they went to a place where HJ's car was found?
As owner/slave?
HJ helping out WS in her parttime jobs?
I mean,i don't even ship them at first, but fate always throw them together while jihoon always missed all the opportunities and doesn't that tells you something?

I think I hate dramaland's Fates by now lol. Guess it is not fate, but the fate created by writers/ producers, whom just wants specific two people to end up together. But should have seen this coming yeah since YSY is the lead. I thought even if he didn't get the girl, he could still be the lead and be the most influential person in the drama, ala 'back to the future' way, where the guy goes back to the past , and his mom falls for him kind of, him and the professor were a team, so I thought, the moment I saw ji hoon saying, 'this is how I met my father, hyun jae', I thought this drama is more about the father and son, hyun jae - ji hoon, also seeing how lee se young is a rising actress, I thought her character will be sidelined, guess I was so wrong.

This drama is making me feel so conflicted because on the one hand HJ and WS are completely adorable together, but on the other hand the whole father/son love triangle does feel a little icky to me. If HJ wasn't (supposedly) JH's father and he was just a time traveling 90's idol, I would be all for HJ/WS. Honestly after the episodes tonight, I sorta don't want either of the boys to get WS and have the adorable kitten that is MJ swoop in at the last minute and steal the girl (highly improbable, but imagine HJ and JH's faces!) Side note: I would kill to have an actual TONYMOLY store anywhere near me!

Knetz would be screaming sponsership and all that nonsense. Cha Eun Woo has a lot of potential as an actor, I love him here and I'll be looking out for him in the future. I'd hate it if his acting career got ruined because knetz fury at the writers trolling them with WS/MJ.

Whatever happened to this drama? It's like it lost its mojo and just went with whatever people wanted disregarding the plot. Wasn''t HJ supposed to be trying to solve the mystery of his time travel? What''s with the loveline becoming front and center of the story line? I may be one of the few who feels very uncomfortable with the HJ/WS ship. Come on, she's the one girl your supposed son has been pining on for years and here you are making moves? I really don't like the direction where it is going now. I am also getting tired of WS being the fierce but mostly damsel in distress persona going on. Like girl, I know you are spunky and independent and all but the way she acts makes the HJ and JH on edge. Was there also a need for MJ to be in the love polygon? lmao. She must be soooo lucky to have the attention of three guys at once. Oh well...it's a romcom drama after all.

I agree. Mostly anyway other than HJ being the dad because up to now I can't decide and it seems the writers put us into that trap. But you are right, regardless of who it is, the actors went around establishing that plot, it is unreasonable to expect viewers to keep an open mind about an incestuous triangle for the sake of shippers. Either way, I feel you and I got the flak for saying something similar in another forum. It seems that there they are more into shipping HJ-WS and concluded that is what the viewers all want - that the voice of knetizens is what matters. But the rating does not support this theory. Looking at the weely ratings, there is hardly any movement that suggests for the drama to take the direction to the whims of the k-nets. It follows almost the same digits - lower on fridays, peaking on saturdays - from the very first episode. Only that clip of YSY's naked fan service got Naver all mad. Also when the lead actress says her character is someone young adults can relate to - one moment alpha-female, next moment a distressed and clumsy damsel in need of protection, with a trio of hot males in relentless pursuit and ah don't forget, shockingly pretty (as HJ puts it)... how can everyone relate to that? And how can HJ get distracted by a romance when he has to resolve so many issues and relationships surrounding his disappearance/death(?), never mind that the issue of money has somehow been resolved by HJ blakmailing YJ. Has it been a rom-com all along, and not a variety-drama? What a let-down. Am not as excited as I was before but I will keep watching it for glimpses of YSY's brilliant screen presence.

I don't feel like the triangle is incestuous because of the circumstances of HJ being 23 and from the past. He never met young JH nor acted as his father. He has also never crossed paths with WS as a child nor will he (since it seems like he may ultimately remain in the 2017 timeline). And we know for sure that JH's mom is BH, so there is no question of WS ending up as his bio-mom. I feel it isn't much different from when two guys in a close relationship (brothers, best friends, cousins) fall for the same girl. I do cringe a little when that happens since the girl comes between two friends trope is not my thing. It isn't really so much incestuous as somewhat messy and dishonorable.
I do think it's sort of bad move for him to pursue WS when his future is so unstable. He doesn't know for sure he will be in 2017. Don't make a girl fall for you only to abandon her, like you did with Bo Hee!
As for ratings, there is a recent scandal involving Bo Hee's actress and her bully son hitting another kid with a bat. The actress was dismissive towards the incident and the victim and got called out on it. The production won't fire the actress, but with the scandal being a possible threat to the ratings (since a bunch of the best hit viewers were demanding that she be fired), they may have been trying to prop up the ratings with more romance.

Ok, I will start thanking the PD and writers for the YSY naked fanservice, hee!
For the rest, I enjoyed the episode a lot, I laughed at all the romance tropes, like "are they going to do this too?", but being DaBong the one involved, I found it hilarious and cute at the same time. Of course it helps that I am a big HJ-WS shipper.
Regarding the end, I have my theories and think that everything will be solved in a more or less satisfying way. To be honest, I'm a bit tired of the growing angst and want the show to go back in full comedy mode. So I hope that the mystery is solved asap, even if that means that HJ has to go back to the past (hopefully only in a temporary way).

In my experience time-travelling dramas always go for angst in the final episodes, so I unfortunately I see little chance of returning to the comedy of yore. There are too many issues to be solved.
I took these episodes as the calm before the storm. Both WS and HJ have realised their feelings for each other (shippers rejoice!) but if they are not separated by the father-son situation soon, there is still the small issue that the time-traveler might have to go back.

Thank you for the recap gummimochi!
I thought the towel would fall before Woo-seung was going to pull it, LOL! I laughed so hard at the whole checking himself out in the mirror, acting cool and then freaking out seeing a cockroach!
I was a little sad that the mystery had to take a backseat for the romance this episode! I love Hyun-jae and though I'm not shipping him with Woo-seung I love seeing them together (I love seeing him with everyone), I don't know how this is going to work, will he stay in this timeline to be with her? Will his decision to do so have consequences? We still don't know what happened in the past and why he disappeared but I don't think Kwang-jae had anything to do with it! Also, I'm not sure if Ji-hoon is his son but then who is Ji-hoon's father? That itself is a mystery!
To me, Kwang-jae will always be Ji-hoon's father though, I love seeing their father-son moments, they're just so sweet and I'm glad Ji-hoon decided to work with him!
And yes, that umbrella scene, why so SWOONY?!!

well, this weeks' eps seems got some people frustrated, based on the comments. Mainly coz the focused romance btwn HJ-WS, how conventional those rom coms scene, how HJ did nothing to the future and more nothing to reveal the past, also it feel like losing its variety feel anymore. I agree to all of these only to a certain extend. All in all,, my opinion is how the variety aspect is played in this drama is not just in the comedy n gag part but also how they play with the plot, for ex. how many of us shocked at the sudden revelation of HJ as JH father as early as ep 2, and how HJ reveals his identity to GJ and YJ just like that n there was no big reaction plus bgm ala makjang. But reversal to that, they emphasised so much tiny resemblance btwn HJ n JH (sleeping position, peanut allergy n coakcroach phobia) that even can be easily questionable as a proof to their father-son relationship. Thats really variety-like since nothing to be sure till the end, they served on multipurpose for the sake of entertainment n also play as a small hint (possibly). U can't expect everything to lay off neatly. The biggest revelation might even save for the last 15 min of ep 32 n who knows? maybe it even took a few flashback n character's monologue to solve all of that. For me its a real slice-of-life drama which i think i can relate in many way as i put myself in each character's situation.
Yes, the romcom part is a bit conventional (i find it a bit ehhh), but i didn't expect it to be rofl all the way from highway to the front door n the chemistry are good too so not going to complain a lot. Its a slice of life anyway, not so everyone are love-proof or prefer crazy LOLling date. at this rate they might decided to not ridiculed anything n just want to shows how the character will be in plain portrayal. Until everything is revealed, every of the character are allowed to date, eat, or playing golf as they want coz we stilll dont know the real truth about JH birth secret n the money whereabout as in real life " life goes on" so does all the characters. But i did feel curious though if the writer runout of super hillarious idea n save it for later. Still, i love the drama . P/S: personally i think this drama is about take everything lightly as long as u can coz no one knows when it gonna be heavy. Enjoy the present (Hyunjae).

If indeed HJ is just going to tie all the loose ends in the present, then return temporarily to the past between 1993-1994 to sync whatever he resolved in the future he returned from only to disappear again to go back to the present (2017) to fulfill his heart's desire, that would be really really creepy. Even if they both disappear into an alternative time and space, the people in the present would still have to be greatly affected. I hope the writers have secured all the loose ends for the remaining episodes without leaving more questions unanswered.

So I think I am in a complete minority here but I felt this episode the PDs and (and maybe the writer) was poking gentle fun at Kdrama romance (and maybe being tongue in cheek if in fact they were pressured by the internet to focus on WS-HJ) by cramming every conceivable trope into one episode. Treating injury as pretext for skinship? Check. Wrist grab? Check. Agyeo (and I loved that it came exclusively from YJ)? Check. Umbrella scene? Check. Cohabitation hijinks? Check. Staying up through the night to take care of fever? Check. Same with the PPL.

Maybe it's intentional, but the problem is that none of those scenes are really funny. If they intended to poke fun they are doing an incredibly poor job. Simply repeating a trope is not a parody, and cramming as many tropes as possible won't make it one. Other dramas manage to poke fun at romance tropes while being actually funny, like My Only Love Song and even Bride if the Water God.

I understand many people are disappointed with the overly focus on the romance, but what I really don't get is some people saying the drama changed it's paring, and some blaming the low rating and knetizens review for that, when in fact the love line were already decided since long ago and nothing has changed!
you need to look back at the relationship chart! Which was released before even the drama airing, there were three of them which clearly stated a love line from HJ to WS, the third one showed mutual feelings between HJ and WS with the tag "ill-fated relationship".
Sure the writing process might got effected by knetizens bash, like decreasing BH's screen time, or giving little a bit more than expected time on HyunWoo couple, but I don't think it effected the main storyline.

I'm a WS/HJ shipper so I was more than ok with the romance, but my heart still bleeds at how amazing this drama could have been, if only it had taken on a different direction.
I don't know where they're going with the mystery anymore, it feels like an afterthought now when I had high hopes it would lead to interesting discoveries and growth opportunities for the characters.
More than that, I remember distinctly the moment, when WS starts playing the piano and JH is crushing it at his audition and getting unfairly put aside, when they could have had a chance to become this awesome gang who find friendship and meaning in their lives through music and solidarity.
It could have been You are Beautiful meets Dream High with the added bonus of the elders and the second chance storyline for Hyun Jae.
Instead, it feels like the drama has lost focus and every storyline feels so lonely.
- WS feels lonelier than ever to me, and I felt for her when she discovered her only great and reliable friend had developed feelings for her.
- MC Drill is living in a lie even to his best friend about his age.
- JH is reaching out to his dad, which is good, but I still want Gwang Jae to start living a life he wants instead of being the one to sacrifice everything to others' dreams.
- HJ had just started to seize the opportunity and live in this lifetime, and what a great asset to their group, but so far he's only become a producer for good-for-nothing Young Jae.
I'm still invested, mostly because of YJY and because I still feel such potential for all of them, but now that we're approaching the end, I mostly feel sorry for the greatness that could have been

Okay I'm still Ji Hoon (Kim Min Jae) fan but I don't like to focus on his love life but more of his dream to be in the limelight --- that more has a lot of opportunity and light. This young man really got me to watch for this series --- rapping and dance. I want to see more. Anyway, his pairing with Woosueng is a bonus but I'd like to commend their friendship. No ackwardness can tear them apart. If they will be together fine but if not its okay --- I also like the other girl for him.

HJ provides the fun and energy for this drama, but JH provides the heart with his struggle to achieve his dream and once he didn't get picked for the debut team, his struggle to try to give up. I can see why MC Drill is so attached to him and is almost like a second mom to JH at times.
I was worried JH was going to all up in WS's space and making her feel super uncomfortable after his confesssion. But I like the rhythm they have now - he'll lightly hit on her and WS literally hits him. :) I feel like he'll get over WS just fine and if he want to debut, he should probably not date.
And his scenes with Kwang-jae gives me the feels.

As some pointed out, we do not know if HJ is really JW's father. Woosungs mom (the stylist) just said "i think it's Hyun Jae" , but so far it does not seem as Bohee actually admitted as such. The watch from his father? don't forget, that "one of a kind" watch is NOT one of a kind, KJ has the same one.Why could HJ and Bohee not have been like Jiwoo and woosung? Great friends who confide in eachother and spend time together? Her affection might just be for the loss of a friend who is loved, not a lover. If someone that close to you goes missing, ofcourse you will wonder and miss them.
For all we know Kwang jae might have gotten drunk one night, spend the night with BH and fathered Jiwoon but forgot about it due to blackout. Bohee being all noble idiot, thinking he does not love her kept it quiet all this time? Why else would this womand have lived with him for 20 years? not to rekindle her carreer, given how much star punch guy still drools over her, she could have started that ages ago. She just seems happy and content being the mom and kwang Jae's "wife" somehow. and if HJ went back to 94 and confided in her and told her he would travel forward in time again, that "i will wait for you" Phrase on the photo does make sense.
As for HJ, since KJ , the friend he trust the most in both his lives ,said he is the father, he believes it, does not mean he accepts it or has any father feelings. Like someone said, he is not a 46 yr old man, he's a 23 year old guy who got ripped from his own time and comfortable life to the future. He still is only 23 , he did not experience the 20 years missing. He just fell in love with a girl his own age. My guess is his timetravel from 1993 is the first, he goes back to 1993/94 to get the money to help BH en KJ out,but does not succeed ("i am not a savior") and decides to go back in 1994 to WS and his new family anyways. That phone call he made to KJ before he went missing was both sweet and odd, His first and last person on his mind is always kwang Jae. Also, i want a spinoff for MC drill, he is adorkable.

As to the plot progression, I feel that the romance between YHJ and WS gained alot more depth today through the typical romantic scenes. Somehow YHJ made it that much more aching, that much sweeter.
Also, I read alot of interesting theories on soompi and one of them is about how Ji Hoon might be Young Jae's son all along, and that the mysterious boyfriend that Bo Hee had was probably Young Jae? Of course, this doesn't explain why Bo Hee would miss Hyun Jae so much though

My theory with Bo Hee and Hyun Jae is that he tried to help her in the past and disappeared in the process.

Gross! What kind of ex-boyfriend uses a telescope to peep on his ex-gf and baby momma??? Not to mention she had basically no reaction to seeing Young-jae when she signed a contract with him and did not seem like she was ever all that close to him.

Really a downvote? Young-jae has a fan lol? I'm sure he'd be happy if he knew. Downvote me all you want YJ fans, he's objectively a pervert!
