Shin Hyun-soo to return as an ex for JTBC’s Age of Youth 2

We’ve got one more love interest (or ex-love interest, booo) confirmed for JTBC’s upcoming Age of Youth 2. Shin Hyun-soo (Ruler—Master of the Mask), the sunbae boyfriend of Park Hye-soo’s introverted freshman character, will be returning for the second season of the youth drama.

When I first heard the announcement that JTBC would air another season of Age of Youth, I was really excited because I felt that all of our Belle Epoque residents still had a lot of their story left to tell, and I wanted to watch them continue to grow. But the casting news since the initial reports of a second season have been a bit of a mixed bag: Han Ye-ri, Park Eun-bin, and Han Seung-yeon are all returning for the show, but Park Hye-soo has been replaced due to scheduling conflicts, and Ryu Hwa-young’s character has been written out of the show, though she will make short appearances in a guest star capacity.

With Park Hye-soo out and a new face replacing her (Ji-woo), I’m not sure how I’ll react to Shin Hyun-soo interacting with our wallflower Eun-jae version 2.0. On top of which, the upcoming season, set a year after the end of the first, is supposed to start with her hurting after being dumped! Aaah, that news made me almost cry, because their awkward, adorable courtship was one of my favorite things about the slice-of-life drama. I do admit that I’m interested in getting the backstory on why their relationship fell apart, though, because Shin Hyun-soo’s character was endearingly smitten with Eun-jae the last time we saw him. Maybe their trajectory this season includes making up and getting back together? *hopeful eyes*

Another disappointment is the fact that Yoon Park (Introverted Boss) will not be returning as the chef with a crush on Han Ye-ri’s character. I rooted for their budding but bittersweet romance in the first season, but I can see how their relationship might have ended offscreen before it really began. I’m still on the lookout and hoping for the return of one more of our girls’ potential love interests, though: Son Seung-won (Person Who Gives Happiness), the perpetually annoyed friend of Park Eun-bin’s character who also worked for the university newspaper. The brief glimpses we saw of them together showed a cute dynamic, and there were some signs pointing towards romance in the last episode of the first season. Here’s to hoping that he returns and Park Eun-bin makes it out of singledom at last!

I’m excited to get back to Belle Epoque and our lovable roommates, and we won’t have to wait too long now: JTBC’s Age of Youth 2 will air after Woman of Dignity on Fridays and Saturdays, and will premiere in August.

I love that at least Sun-bae is back but please don't turn him into a douche bag. I love him and Eun-bi sooooo much it's kind of hard having to imagine him dumping her. Why do I feel sad already? :(

They should have just written in another new character when Park Hye Soo dropped out. I've been rolling with the punches re: the casting so far, but recasting Eun Jae? Not a fan.

Same. This just isn't right for me. I really, really wanted at least 4 of the original girls back. It's too bad Park Hye-soo couldn't do this because it's literally the only thing she's done well in.

My trust in Park Yeon-seon is keeping me hanging on, but I really wish they'd just create a new character.

They have the perfect setup to write characters in and out of the show. Recasting Eun Jae just feels like they didn't want to bother changing the script again after Park Hye Soo left. I understand why she chose to do her movie over this, but I still think AOY would've been the better move for her.

I keep telling myself that as long as the writer and PD are the same, it should be fine. But this, along with the addition of the idol male cast members worry me.

Agree 100%!
Also with another actress acting in the same role, I'll definitely end up comparing their performances instead of enjoying the show.

Exactly! How are they going to explain Eun-jae's new face? She got into an accident and had plastic surgery? This isn't Yeh Vaada Raha man, what gives?!

I am pretty much sure it is her /her agency was late in giving their final confirmation and the confirmation of airing time for AOY was also just have been made recently. Offer for AOY already out early this year, if I'm not mistaken when she's just completed Introvert Boss and she only received movie offer last month.. Anyway I'll take this whole situation as something unavoidable & hopefully not something unprofessional from any side.

It's actually easier to be said than done to re-write new character esp if she is one of the main characters. The writer might have finished writing the whole script and if she is to re-write, if may take some time. Writing for good slice of life story taking some time especially with 5 main characters, and it is not just a cliche romance story. They can change the name and having new girl with same character but different name, but I'll take that this writer value each character and take pride of her own writing, so she won't simply do that.

While I'm also sad not having few original casts, but I don't really worry about the acting. If Han Seung Yeon who's known for her mediocre acting did well in season 1, Park Hye Soo & Ryu Hwayoung also were good in their own respective role despite of still rookie, I trust this writer / PD know what they're doing.

It's good that Shin Hyun Soo is back, but I don't really like the fact that he is returning as an ex. I can't believe he dumped Eun Bi. Their relationship was so cute. But then, after Park Hye Soo dropped out, I don't know how his role could continue on. I don't want to see him with the new lead (but that's just me being selfish).

YP not coming back?? Nooo. I swear this will be one of the open endings that will hunt me forever. His story with Han Yeri's character was so incomplete.

Nooo, they were my favorite couple and now they made them broke up,that is not fair...And that's why i hate seasons in kland,if i can even say that...ruining such a endering couple...I know in reality couple break up and so but at least in a drama i'd love to see and imagine the "lived happily ever after"

You know that episode of "The Office" where they replace Jim with an Asian guy for a day and everyone is in on it but Dwight just freaks out and refuses ti accept it? Maybe that's what happened here. Maybe Eun-jae version 2.0 kept insisting she was the real Eun-jae but our puppy sunbae wasn't buying it and he dumped her! Lol, maybe season 2 is all about him trying to piece together the mystery behind original Eun-jae's disappearance.

Seriously, the more I hear of the second season the more I'm thinking:"Be careful what you wish for."
I wanted a second season alright but I don't know how to feel about this now. I hope it will be good, even without all the same actors and characters....

Yes @mary. I'm with you. I believe this writer knows what she's doing. I am more interested with their stories than their love story (love story is just a bonus part). As long as Ji Won gets more story this time, I will happy!

He was such a nice first boyfriend for the girl in season 1. I personally think it is good to inject a realistic element in this drama. Some first relationships don't last forever.

But but Sunbae was sooooo in love with Eun Jae.... I would have pegged him to be the one to get dumped.

But still, I'm so happy he'll be coming back! I was quite disappointed that he wasn't gonna be in it in earlier reports. Like Tipsymocha said, can I maybe hope for a reconciliation too? Pretty please? They were my fave couple!

If not just console me by making sure Jiwon gets her sunbae...

>> Oh no, just as I was about to hit "Send" for my comment I suddenly remembered Eun Jae isn't gonna be played by the original actress!!! What's the point of him returning? Way to rain on my parade... Fine, just give me Jiwon's sunbae loveline please

I thought Shin Hyun Soo's character was great, as as was Park Hye Soo's. But I can 110% believe their relationship didn't last long. It was at times adorably awkward, but ......... I can understand the frustrations that would have arisen between the two of them. I was already getting frustrated watching them.

Lack of Yoon Park is KILLING ME though. NoooOoooOOOOOOooOOO.

Ok.. now I'm getting nervous about the 2nd season. It's a total mixbag, and I'm worried I would be scarred if I put too high of hopes on the show. Remember Dream High?

Perhaps I should wait to hear the review first before diving in...

I would have been happier about this if Park Hye Soo was coming back. I adored the Eun Jae - Jong Yeol relationship! Seeing him interact with a different actress but in the same storyline could be weird...and no Yoon Park either! gahhh

Oh, this is very good news. I'm delighted. I just wish the original actress would come back to play Eun Jae. I rooted so much for their romance in part I. Such a pity.

NOOOO. I can't feel anything but sadness right now. so far the news of RHY, PHS, and now yoon park has left me feeling very broken hearted to a point where I can't say I'm looking forward to AoY2 anymore, but the news of eun jae's replacement bothers me the most. it will not be the same without her. I've considered that her dropping out may have come at too late of a notice to change the script, but it doesn't feel right to hand the role to someone else when PHS just *is* eun jae. it has to be her and no one else.

She's probably dropped out late /late in giving her final confirmation, as the movie offer only came last month and this offer for AOY already given much earlier.

I've thought about that, but I still feel disappointed regarding the casting news. I trust park yeon sun to do well on the script itself, but a lack of RHY is saddening to me while a *new* eun jae is like a shock that I'm not sure I can adjust to.

I just hope that with all this casting news, the show doesn't forget why it was so appealing in the first place. It drew me in because it was a show written to the ladies. All its main characters were ladies. The plot revolves around them, and I want the second season to keep it that way. Please, show, don't spoil that for me. If the second season ends up with the same male-centredness that's standard for dramas I'm gonna throw something.

Wait a minute..I totally didn't know Shin Hyun-soo is the Crown Prince's body guard in Ruler! The hair can really change a person beyond recognition O.O In this case, it's great because he looks handsome and manly in Ruler and cute as a puppy in AoY.

So disappointed, I really wanted to see more Park Hye Soo and Shin Hyun Soo cuteness! I will try to give the new girl a chance. Ryu Hwa Young was also another draw for me, both of these girls were my favourite but I would still watch Age of Youth 2 and hope for the best!

I had such a crush on the chef I'm so sad he isn't coming back haha :(

And this guy is back but as an ex? (And Park Hye Soo won't be Eun Jae either... not too excited about that) Age of Youth left so many loose threads without resolution so I guess we're just meant to start fresh with the Belle Epoque girls, but I hope we get answers at least? Age of Youth was an enjoyable slice of life series, I hope it does just as well or better for season 2. If not I could just watch the first season again haha

Love him!

Don't know what to think, do, or feel.
Though, I do think breaking up after a year in your college years, especially with one person in the relationship being older and more outgoing is quite normal. BUT THEY WERE SO CUTE!!!!!!!!!!!
My only condolence is that I won't be too torn up about watching it because the actress for Eun Jae will be different.

it kinda feels weird that Eun-Jae's character will be replaced. I think she fits the role so perfectly and her relationship with her Sunbae was the cutest thing in this show. gaaah. i can't imagine having someone other than Park Hye-Soo to be EunJae :(

and the chef won't comeback? noooo! :( i ship him and Jin-Myung so much! i love their love story and i was so excited when i heard there was season 2 because i want to know what will happen next to both of them. but now, he's not coming back? :(((

i feel bad already when i heard that Kang Yi-Na will not be a regular anymore, but at least she'll guest for a few episodes.. i want to see her have a happy relationship with her workmate. haha. they're both so cute together as well!

at least, there's still Ji-Won and Sung-Min.. i hope they make progress in S2. <3

but still... why o why it has to be this way? :(

Okay, I guess I'll see how that goes'. Hopefully season 2 will be just as awesome as season 1 despite initial gut responses to the news
