Well, I am totally ruined by Forest of Secrets that all other dramas pale into the background (FMW, FIS, and SP which I had dropped anyway. Anyway, weekend is here and two more episodes at doorstep.

Only started FOS a few days ago and OMG it is like another Signal (and may even be better). The writing, directing, cinematography, and ACTING!! Each episode is like a movie except you don't want it to stop - but you really can't binge watch because there's so much to digest. Haven't seen such an intelligent show for a long while.

Suspicious Partner and Fight My Way have been hitting it out of the park recently. I'm surprised that I have been able to identify with both in one way or another. I usually hate the awkwardness that these dramas tend to have, but I think because the acting is top notch, I'm able to enjoy them.

I'm also watching a C-drama at the moment called Rush to the Dead Summer which is also pretty enjoyable. It has its really annoying moments, but at its core, I really like it.

What sucks is that there are so many other dramas to watch at the moment: Circle, Lookout, and The Best Hit are just three of the many I need to watch. So many dramas, so little time.

@hades Patiently waiting for Rush to the Dead Summer to finish airing so I can binge watch the whole thing. C-dramas are a hit or miss for me and I find they usually drag a lot in the middle. So if a C-drama interests me I usually binge watch it and skip any draggy parts in the middle.

I'm on ep 26 and so far it hasn't been too draggy. I think the show can avoid that because of the nature of the story, but I hope I'm not speaking too early.

Hello beanies! Hope you are all having a good Friday!

Sadly no New stories this week. been working away from the Kindergarten with some children for their transer over into the School sysetm. So been a crazy week. The weekend will be such a Nice break.

Still lagging months being on my watching scheduals. Which of the New ones are Worth starting and which ones should I pass?
last New drama I've slowly working through is Tunnel which I do like and hope hte ending is not letting me Down. Which should put it into perspective how far I am behind (last one before this was missing 9 which I am stuck at ep 3 I think... and I've missed most Things before it and most Things after it)

Waa is it some kind of invitation for the little rabbit bouncing everywhere than I become thanks to Forest of Secrets to praise my favorite show?! Hehe you're so kind unnie! *devil smirk*

Now let me get started *rolling up my sleeves*
You know, I can spend hours talking about this drama and explaining how a perfect show it is but you're only going to figure it out if you watch the first episodes. (what? Is it obvious? I thought it was some kind of magic spell...).
No seriously, using beanies words, this drama is truly a "masterpiece" (@outofthisworld). It is the kind of drama where you don't have to worry about the acting, the directing, the writing or whatever it is. You just have to sit down and enjoy it.
" It’s definitely the type of crime show that requires all of your attention, while at the same time, you want to give it your full attention"(@sailorjumun).
"My only complain - I can't get enough of this show. Suddenly, all other shows feel like fillers of the week to help me get to the weekend" (@outofthisworld). Can you stop being everywhere unnie/oppa? hmm
"I've not felt this excited for a show since signal. The directing, acting and cinematography are top notch as it was there" (@rookie).
And finally, it is the kind of show that can make you go crazy beacause of a smile (@bambi, @wonid2017 won't say otherwise. hehe) and promise you'll know about what I am talking as soon as you start watching it. After all, it is just on episode 6.... six hours on binge watching FOS is nothing but healthy, right?

Sigh Cheese in the Trap. I worked so hard trying to make the show work in my head. The beginning was really different and the choices were challenging which I liked but then...what? why? how? huh?

Kim Go-eun was adorable and I liked her hair.
Seo Kang-joon is a very handsome guy.
I don't necessarily regret watching I'm just perplexed thinking back.

Hello, beanies and happy Friday.
I want to ask: Anyone of beanies can recommend me Kdramas that don't have leads with painful past? Or the dramas that were started in the present time without turning back to the leads past? The one drama like this, i remember watching is Heard it through the grapevine.
But no crime/thriller dramas, please.
Thank you, Beanies. *love*

Tragic Past is the base of almost 90% plus kdramas.
Muh past, My tragic past/childhood/1stlove, My family problems, my parents issues, my mommy-pops problems and list just goes on. You are forced to think that even genuine citizen of korea is going through some mental troubles and need some kind of therapy or rehabilitation.

I would like to see a kdrama character without any traumas of past.

2
reply

Required fields are marked *

The whole painful-past thing annoys me to DEATH so I'm with you on this!! Here are a few that have fewer flashbacks than most, although it's hard to find a Kdrama without *any* flashbacks:
Jealousy Incarnate, which deals with present struggles and is less about the past ones. Oh My Ghostess, again focuses more on the present and less on the past. Descendants of the Sun has very minor flashbacks to the past, and has more fun/funny flashbacks than sad ones. Any of the Answer Me series (1988 is my favorite) focus on the current time instead of the past. My Girlfriend is a Gumiho has a premise that doesn't require the past to be amazing (I honestly can't remember how much it flashed back from the past but it wasn't enough to ruin it for me!). Splash Splash Love is short and because of that it has very little flashback of any kind. A Witch's Romance has only flashbacks to a recent past relationship, not lengthy family-related flashbacks. The Liar and His Love (Lovely Love Lie) has only minor references to the past. Sweet 18 is an older drama and super cute, and it very rarely flashes to anything in the past (other than the meet-cute between the two leads). Marriage, Not Dating has minor flashbacks but mostly present-time focus.
I'm sure there are others, but this is what I can think of off the top of my head!!
To avoid: Pinocchio, LOL!!! Just say no to ENDLESS family-related horrifying traumatic flashbacks. :D

Thank you @msbeatrice81 for your suggestion. Yeah, i forgot that Answer Me series, eventhough their story were told in flashback, but the flashback took over the present, so the past looked like the present on our screen. Yes, AM88 is my fav too.
I watched all that you mentioned, except for: jealousy incarnate, liar and her lover, sweet 18, and marriage not dating.
Planned to watch gumiho since it started airing, but always hesitate to start because the genre is not my cup of tea.
I'll put Jealousy Incarnate in my watch list *smile*

I like Seven Day Queen. It's nicely-written and acted and directed. I'm just not sure if you will like it. They stretched Yeonsangun's character to make the conflicts more balanced (which I admit doesn't affect me much since I'm ignorant of Korean History.) But I remember you like analyzing the historical connections in dramas, so the overly whitewashed Yeongsangun might annoy you. :(

It'd be great to have you and other history-buff beanies join the comments though! I enjoy reading the extra pieces of history shared in the comments section.

Hey @mary! I've checked out Seven Day Queen, and while most bits of Yeonsangun and Yeok are over romanticised at this point, I kind of remind myself that it's fiction? At least that causes me way less pain haha. I was telling @napkiin that I'd rather this version of Jungjong than the real one, given how he was such a wimp and needed his wife to stop him from making all the wrong decisions.

But yeah I think I'll keep watching SDQ! I do hope for a good sageuk soon though, those are the best.

I have heard only great things about the show so far but therein lies the problem? Knowing myself, I know I am going to fall in love with Yeonsangun's character and his stupid moral ambiguity and this hopeless pining for a redemption arc. Which will obviously lead to MORE PAIN! The struggle has never been more real. So yeh I am waiting *whimpers*

Happy Friday, Beanies! I missed last week's OT because I was addicted to Reply 1988 ^^" The episodes were so long but my mum and I couldn't stop watching because we loved the characters so much.

Reply 1988: The last scene was so heartbreaking, the day I finished watching it I woke up in the middle of the night still feeling torn up about it. But I wouldn't think twice about going through it again, if it means I can see the story of the Ssangmundong community unfold in such an understated but heart-wrenching way. I'm amazed by all the little details the writers fleshed out and managed to keep track of, and how each episode peeled back the layers of the characters who seem archetypal at first but come to life in a way that made me mourn after the series ended. (I really didn't expect Bora and Taek's dad to become my favourite characters.) When the show ended it felt like it took a piece of my heart away with it.

Chicago Typewriter: I started this last week because I really liked Go Kyungpyo as Sunwoo in R1988, and I was also curious about the 1930s storyline. I just finished it! I was at one point more addicted to CT than R1988, but although I liked the story that unfolded and the relationships between the characters, somehow it felt like the show lost momentum at around the Ep10 mark. But this show will have a special place in my heart because of the special tale it told; it was never about a romance that transcended time, but about being given a second chance to right your wrongs and live in the present. It also gifted me with an unforgettable bromance, GKP as a literal puppy, the best Kdrama wig of all time, and GKP in Many Handsome Outfits *__*

Weightlifting Fairy: It took me 9 episodes to realise, but—unpopular opinion ahead—I actually am not very fond of Bokjoo. It's not that I dislike her, or can't empathise with her embarrassing first crush, but she just gets angry and yells too much. I don't know if it's because in recent months I have a new neighbour downstairs and their family keeps yelling, so I got sensitive to it. Though it's weird because Bora (R1988) shouts quite a lot too, so I haven't really wrapped my head around what's making me not take to Bokjoo. I still like the story and the relationship between the main couple, so I'm going to keep watching.

That's all! After I settle down from my Reply 1988 drama hangover, I might start on Sassy Go Go or pick up Fight My Way again. Have a good weekend Beanies ^^

Reply88's ending was totally more heartbreaking than the other two because it highlighted that the giant street/family broke up into tiny subgroups and moved on to other things. T___T

97 and 94 teams also grew up and led different lives with the occasional loud reunions, but they didn't wave the empty houses in our faces like how 88 did. Not that I hate 88 for it. It's just so raw and made saying goodbye to the show that much more difficult.

2
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

Omg it's mary! Hi! -mini fangirl moment-

You're right about it making the goodbye that much harder, yet I think it also took the writers/ director courage to choose that ending over a happy one. We're further removed from the 88 setting not just in time period, but also in the spirit of neighbourliness. The fact that those years and that kind of love and family that transcends blood ties will never be recovered is what makes them so precious. 88, more so than the other two series, needed this sad nostalgia to make its emotional core work.

But! Earlier this year I chanced upon a real life Ssangmundong-like community, Doksan 4-dong. I saw a preview for a documentary feature on it, and the residents help look after the children in the community. In the preview you can see them gathering to wish a new baby good health ^^ It's definitely a rarity, but it's really sweet that there's still such a neighbourhood around.

AGHHHH Reply 1988! Don't remind me of this drama~! This was the only Reply series that I watched live and so my heartbreak was tenfold by the end of it. While the boys broke me heart, the dads are still my favorite characters and the ones I cried the hardest for. There is something so emotionally poignant when you began to see your fathers are not just your guardians and superman but as flawed people with lives and struggles of their own. That emotional fragility of that moment always gets me.

2

Required fields are marked *

I loved that episode that focused on the dads! It's such a breath of fresh air that the parents get a lot of limelight in this Reply series. You see them in their capacity as parents, spouses, friends, and even as children to their own parents.

Come to think of it, it's wonderful how emotionally open the show is even when it comes to male characters. They're not caught up in the trap of toxic masculinity; the dads hold themselves together because of their children, not because they have ideas of "manning up" that involve hiding their emotions. And the boys also openly show their affection for each other.

<but she just gets angry and yells too much

I think that about, umm, 80% of drama heroines and, actually, a whole lot of supporting characters as well. I can't say I can relate to a lot of them very well... and often it just seems like over-acting to me as well (and generally unrealistic).

14
1

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, now that you mention it, the ways female characters are characterised are a lot more limited than male characters :( We've had a number of beta-male leads before, so a quiet heroine would be a nice change.

And a quiet or introverted character doesn't even have to be awkward or lacking in self-esteem, so I'm hoping to see more diverse kinds of introverted characters that we can relate to better (I remember a comment thread on one of the recaps about how a lot of Beanies are introverts!)

1

Required fields are marked *

Weightlifting Fairy: hahaha She does yell and get angry all the time. I can completely see how it can grate on someone but I dunno Lee Sung-kyung interpretation of Kim Bok-joo was actually really endearing to me. Bok-joo is played as young adult who's awkward, immature and gruff. She doesn't act "lady like." I dunno I like that she's a bit of a messy personality.

0
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

I definitely agree it wasn't easy for Lee Sung-kyung to play Bok-joo, being a very cool and chic model/actress, and she did it well. On one hand, I like the idea that the show is exploring how BJ is coming to terms with not conforming to traditional notions of femininity, and that she can still be loved for how gruff she seems.

But on the other hand, I can't help wondering if the show could've toned down on at least one of her qualities. It's not really always the case that someone who is tomboyish and boisterous also has a bad temper, or necessarily eats and drinks the way BJ does. Then again, I still have 7 episodes to go, so maybe I will see more sides to BJ that will endear her to me more!

1

I watched Cheese in the Trap before WFKJ and Lee Sung-kyung's performance/character drove me crazy. While I was intrigued by her physical acting I just couldn't get on board with the cartoonish character. Mmm maybe the difference between characters affected my perspective? I remember thinking she's improved and her acting style works so well here!
Mmm yeah the show could have toned down a bit of her outbursts...made some adjustments.
I'm trying to remember but weren't the eating and drinking habits the same for all members of the team?
I thought her friends were good examples of being tomboyish and boisterous without a bad temper. They were always trying to chill Bok-joo out.
Hopefully she grows on you or you can enjoy everyone else. :)

It has been an unlucky week for me.
1st , my phone screen was broken and needed to be repaired. It costed me around 100 dollars.

My father ( 62years) has been ill for the whole week because of infuenza and also had diarrhoea. There is also cough and haemoptysis in the symptoms. He doesnt smoke , but he did smoke in his younger days and was an officer of container ships. I want to check him for malignant lung tumor but he doesn't want to take my advice. My father is the only family member left for me.Of course, I am worried.

My sister had an operation for appendicitis.

I heard the news I don't want to hear.

Two of my favorite actors, Yoo Ah_in and Seo In_guk getting blacklash for their military exemptions.
Now I am also ill. I feel like I am getting both physical and mental trauma.

Just sharing the news, because I have noone to share.

I'm so sorry to hear that you've been going through a lot this week. It's unfortunate that sometimes everything seems to be out to get at you all at once. I do hope after given some time to think about it, your father would agree to your suggestion that he have a health check, especially if he knows how much he matters to you. I'm pretty sure that knowing that, he will understand no matter how hard he tries to downplay his health problems, it wouldn't make it any easier for you as his child. I also hope your cousin would get better soon after the surgery.

As for YAI and SIG, I have read the news elsewhere and it looks like the international fanbase is more understanding re. their health issues. I don't know if that would offer you some comfort but I think there would be people out there who would understand the severity of YAI's condition. Someone said that if he took a hiatus from acting projects and return much later the backlash might die down a bit. I do hope that would be the case for him.

In YAI's case, I'll take that the backlash he is getting is not from majority. At least I want to believe not all knetizens are that bad. I also think it's better for him and SIG not to take any movie/drama project next year and take some break. They're clearly not at wrong, but since they are celebrity, the public sentiments are stronger than usual.

I truly find it ridiculous how korean netizens are not ok with not going to the army but they are fine with the celebrity also not working during that time.

That baffles me too. It almost feels like it's a given for them that said celebrities must suffer from some 'punishment' for not joining the army despite their health problems. I mean, people who evade their duty should be criticised, but YAI went through 5 health checks and was dismissed every single time. From another conversation I'm following many people say YAI is suffering from bone cancer/tumour and it can be quite painful even for a desk job. Admittedly I don't know much about it so I have to rely on the knowledge that others offer, but from the sound of it it doesn't seem a trivial matter at all.

I really hope your father is ok! My sister is very reluctant to see doctors and it is upsetting and frustrating when something serious could be wrong. I hope your dad is ok and it's nothing serious!

I wasn't aware about YAI and SIG military exemptions. But why are they getting backlash for legit medical reasons? I can understand if they somehow were trying to avoid going into the military, but I don't get why having a health exemption causes backlash. Is it their fault they have health issues? And how come it's ok when normal people have health exemptions? I am just very confused by this.

I don't know sure about Seo In_ guk.

I read naver comments about YAI.
Unlike most celebrities, YAI can be considered as active in politics.
He said things like "responsibility as a citizen and every male of their country should serve in the army " openly on his social media.

SK netizens hope to see him as an active solider as per his words. It can be said as " The more you hope, the bigger the disappintments " . YAI case is like that for them. That 's why he is getting blacklash.

I don't care because I amn't a korean and there is a legit reason.
I just love his acting , but they must feel that way .

They argue that he should enroll earlier like Yoo Seung _ho when he was still young and healthy and he was taking too much time with projects up to 30 yrs ( age limit).

But he is an actor, he will take projects of course. Who in the right mind will expect a bone tumour occur on your shoulder in your twenties.

Hi MMMkitty, you truly have had a black cloud week and I hope it will blow away quickly. That's a lot of money and it stinks how we're so dependent on our phones that fixing it is almost no more optional than fixing a broken foot. And then the health problems of your loved ones, no matter you are having a physical and mental reaction of your own. You can't control the knetizens reactions, they are often notoriously unfair and it will blow over. YAI and SIG will be back stronger than ever, just it will take time. Your cousin will recover quickly. You need to take care of you as best you can and give yourself breaks. I hope your dad will feel better soon and then take your advice and get a full health checkup, he's at a good age for a baseline set of data on his general health. He's probably scared of what it may show, so it may take a lot of support and coaxing on your part. Good luck! It's not always easy to be a good daughter ?

Happy Friday Beanies :D

Still catching up to Chicago Typewriter, currently on ep 8, ghost Yoo Jin Oh is cute but I already want to see Go Kyung Pyo's lead role in Strongest Deliveryman

The Best Hit gets my attention the most now that Circle has ended, followed by Seven Day Queen

I'm left behind way too much from latest episodes of Ruler, SP, and FMW, might as well drop them when the next batch of July dramas come on my way

Now I'm waiting for all new premieres of Bride of the Water God, School 2017, and Strongest Deliveryman. Summer dramas I'm coming !

Hi Everyone! ....... I hope you are all doing well today!

How I wish I could watch a couple more of the new shows ....... but I have no time!

Watched this week:

Fight My Way - Seol-hee was great. She kept her composure as real life was delivering a crushing emotional blow.

Seven Day Queen - My goodness is it hitting all the right notes! ....... So fabulous. So good.

Suspicious Partner - Having fun watching this. Curious as to what Hyun-soo's story really is.

That's all for now. ...... Take care everyone and have a great Friday!

I've cut down the number of dramas that I've been religiously following, to only The Best Hit and Forest of Secrets, which fortunately both air during the weekend. I've put other shows on the back burner for a while.

Circle has ended and I'm ambivalent toward the ending. It feels rather lacking considering how awesome the show has been at the beginning, but I'm glad the brotherhood remains poignant and beautiful.

Also, why do I smell love triangle coming in The Best Hit? ? I'm not too excited about this but love triangle or no please don't ever lose the humour because that's what I enjoy most about the show.

Omo. I've just watched the live preview and you know what? We're doomed for a love triangle ?.

You know what, I really just want a boy to be interested in WS, and she's unsure about her feelings, torn between friendship and romantic interest. Then the show would let them figure out their feelings for the rest of its run and end up being a couple at the end.

Our main characters all have goals and purposes they're working toward, so I'd love it if romance takes a backseat in this show and we focus more on resolving the main problems (employment issues, living one's dream, the lost money and the mystery surrounding HJ's disappearance, BH's getting over her sad past etc etc). I mean, there are so many interesting things to explore already!

I am really confused about the love triangle in The Best Hit because how on earth are they going to resolve it? Hyun Jae can't possibly fall in love with Woo Seung seeing as how he has to go back in time and father Ji hoon. And so far, it doesn't seem like he had any feelings towards Bo-hee or would even consider having any relationship with her. So I am confused about how they will resolve this whole thing. Will Hyun Jae sacrifice his love for Woo Seung (I am presuming he will fall in love with her since the show seems to be hinting that) for his son. Will he ever have a relationship with Bo-hee? Is Ji hoon even his son? I mean we only have Bo-hee's word for it and so far it doesn't seem to me that's possible since Hyun jae has shown minimal interest in her.

Well my take is this: If they indeed go with the multiverse theory this HJ wouldn't father Ji Hoon because there's another HJ in a parallel 93 universe whose life still went on who would do that. BUT! (big 'but') This only works if the show goes with the multiverse scenario.

Trust me I've got all these sort of questions in my head too and I'm wondering how the show would resolve it. It doesn't appear to me that HJ has got any romantic interest in Bo-Hee either and it's kind of weird knowing he would develop romantic interest in her upon going back to the past, especially after he learned of Ji Hoon's parentage. I don't know how the show would make that possible without borderlining irksomeness.

For once I suddenly hope WS and MJ would end up being a couple. The rest of the young cast can remain single and focus on their other personal quests. No cat fights, no bitter feelings between friends etc etc. They can live on in the rooptop room bickering with one another all they want and I'd watch those petty fights to my heart's content XD.

@maskros I really hope they go with the Multiverse theory. I think this way it would actually allow Hyun jae to stay back in the current timeline without fear of anything happening to the past since that timeline has already moved forward without him. That would mean he could actually have a chance at making something of himself in this life and being a good father figure to ji hoon. And also the romance with WS would work out that way.

Lol I love MJ and WS together as well if only because he's such a dork with his cheesy lines and that lame joke that literally only he finds funny! He's a hoot without his idol fame and I would love to see him flail some more trying to get WS to like him!

MJ can be petty when it comes to competition (wasn't he the one who influenced Young Jae's decision in kicking JH out of the debut list? And why so many Jae's in this drama lol?) but he's not a lost cause and I hope he will have his personal growth too. I lol every single time he makes lame jokes thinking they're funny and then the camera shoots to WS's face which is always like, wth? XD

Yeah the ending and to be more exact the last few eps were rather anticlimatic to me. I don't know if it was because of the episode count or because they were too caught up in the hide and seek in the later half of the show that the ending feels rushed and it doesn't have the suspense that kept me on the edge of my seat earlier on. I kind of like the question of whether a clone of a person with their memories would replace said person, but it's not delved on since the question and solution are crammed into the last one hour and a half.

I'm glad the brothers united at last, though. They both deserve some happy ending.

@juniper
First of all I have a love and hate relationship with Kim Young-hyun and Park Sang-yeon.
At first it was reported that they were just the producers then halfway through the show or around there, it was revealed that they were actually the main writers.

I'm sure you kind of have an idea how much sci-fi it's going to be part of the show. It's just like the amount of history you get from their sageuks.

Kim Young-hyun is very good at casting actors that I love so yes to Yeo Jin-goo. He's always been good so you won't be disappointed with the acting but you know what to expect from the writing.
Joseon X-files is still a mile ahead in quality imo but I guess it's not for everyone.

I'm thinking about learning either Japanese or Korean, but I don't know which I should pick up. I haven't been to either country yet and what I know about them is from the many many many hours of dramas and anime I have consumed recently and other the years respectively. My major reason for learning Korean would mainly be for Dramas. I have a few friends who speak Korean, and I would be easy to get practice that way.

On the other hand, I don't really like J-dramas that much, and I've been watching far fewer animes than I used to, but I absolutely love Japanese food, some J-pop/rock, and I could see myself wanting to spend more time in Japan as opposed to Korea.

From all that I've said so far, it seems pretty clear that Japanese is what I would gravitate too, but the other issue is which is the easier of the two to learn, and how long it would take. I heard that Japanese is pretty difficult with the huge alphabet and all, and Korean could be a bit easier in this regard, but I also heard it can be difficult to distinguish between sounds sometimes which can get frustrating.

So having said that, anyone with experience learning either or both, what's your take?

So

@hades I have recently started learning Korean. So far with K-dramas I have become familiar enough with the language to understand about 80% of the dialogues and usually try to watch things in raw to get a feel of what they are saying. I find it's easier to learn through hearing phrases and words in context and that way I can remember then better.

I have also looked up online Korean language classes which mainly teach reading and writing. I feel Hangeul it's much easier to learn than Japanese letters though it's still tricky.

I started learning Japanese in my senior year of high and it was pretty easy. The sentence struture and grammar are simple enough to remember but the writing system isn't. Since there are 2 writing systems: katakana(relatively easy) and kanji(FREAKING hard) it's important to know both.

As for korean since you watch dramas it'all be a bit easier. It's important to learn Hangul!!! Stay away from romanization at all costs!! Hangul can be learned in a couple hours and from there start looking at vocab. Whenever Hangul comes up on the screen always try to see if you can just read it. Variety shows are a good place to get exposure to sentence structure since they put up Korean subs.

I've learned korean by hearing it enough in shows and paying attention to what's said vs what's written on the screen.

Happy Learning!!!!

Noted with the Hangul. Thanks for the tip. Not the biggest fan of variety shows, so will have to swallow a huge pill there. I think Viki might help with the Hangul though as they have Korean subs for some shows.

Why would you say that Kanji is so hard btw? Is it because of the number of characters involved?

Required fields are marked *

Kanji is hard because you have to memorize a completely different character for *every single word.* Hanguel is simply an alphabet. That you can sound out. So yes, you can learn to read in Korean fairly easily.

I think the two languages are similar in the way they are laid out (word order, use of particles, etc.) and maybe one is not "harder" than the other. But for me, the writing system rockets Korean a thousand rungs higher on the ladder. Well, that and the fact that I am addicted to Kdramas. :)

I have forgotten much of japanese - tried 3 times - got bored and moved to a new language. Kanji is difficult but grammar takes another whole level. I'm not an anime fan but spend a lot of time being part of various manga scanlation fan groups. So i do understand/know/read various japanese words and expressions.
Korean is a bit easy. WORDS are the most important part of a language(my view). So whichever language's words you know most should be your 1st priority(my own opinion)

I have learnt Japanese for three years and even went on to take the JLPT tests... though I came to realise that it is hard to advance past reading and writing if you don't practise listening or talking. In my case, I stopped Japanese language studies for two years when I went for overseas studies in the UK. During this time, my love for korean dramas and variety shows overtook my love for Japanese dramas and mangas. After 2 years, most of my Japanese knowledge had slipped through my fingers and I cannot speak anything more complicated than "Kore wa ringo desu". Lol.

I have recently started to learn Korean language through the online Coursera platform, and I find that there are similarities between Hangeul and the Japanese Hiragana/Katakana characters and sounds. The Hangeul is actually simple to read once you get familiar with the vowels and consonants. Although I am just starting, I am hoping that Korean will be easier to grasp since I do have a healthy dose of kdramas that I cannot seem to finish watching. There are just too many good dramas out there recently!

Either way, my advice is just to follow your gut feel. It takes alot of love for the language and culture to commit and spend time and efforts to master the language, understand the rules of the grammar and sentence structure, vocab grinding etc. Whichever language that you choose to learn first, I have no doubt that you will enjoy the process and come to like the language even more than when you first started. =)

I also learned Japanese before studying Korean and find that it gives me a lot of context that my first language (English) doesn't. I'm more comfortable with the word order, the particles, and even some of the phrasing. Sometimes there are even cognates, if they both kept the Chinese roots of the word, (like love, family, and promise)! The really nice thing about Korean though is the FINITE CHARACTERS!!!!!!!!!! Once you learn them, you're done. Unlike Japanese and kanji.....(I really like King Sejong for inventing hangul!)

This is exactly what is making me indecisive. I think it has more to do with the culture as well. Aside from watching dramas and the like, I'm trying to figure out where would I prefer to visit and revisit, especially considering that there aren't really any countries outside of these that speak the respective languages. I think I need to push up my Japan + Korea trip.

How do you like the Coursera platform btw?

I'm only two weeks into the online course, but so far it has been enjoyable. It comes in the form of videos (the lecturer does a wonderful job at explaining the history of the language in a not-boring manner), worksheets that you can print, and a short quiz after each module. I can easily pause the video and replay to hear the pronunciation of the characters again. Being a complete beginner I had to replay many many times to recap and take notes, but I like that I can self learn at my own pace. The lessons are well structured and easy to follow.

I do wish that the quizes at the end of each module are a little more challenging (it's only 5 multiple choice questions per quiz), but I guess it was just to serve as a little practice. I get more practice questions by using other mobile apps to help me get familiar with reading hangeul and to build up vocab. Considering that the online course is totally free of charge, I would really recommend anyone to try it!

Oh btw I loved to travel to both Japan and Korea. In fact, even though I was already watching lots of Jdramas, I did not pick up the language (thanks to the wonderful subbing committee out there) until I stepped food into Japan. I loved my trip experience so much that I started to take lessons.
I also loved traveling to Korea, and I am so addicted that I try to go back at least once a year. (Google translate was my best buddy in all my trips.) Lol. I guessed if I had went to Korea first when I was younger, I would have picked up Korean language studies instead of Jap. Lol. So well... just go to both countries since they each have their own beauties.

1

Do both. Why not? You might quickly find you prefer one over the other, or that both are your thing.

I don't think either one is easier – in many ways they are quite similar in their "difficulties" when you're coming from (I assume) English. Like word order, multiple politeness levels, different counters tagged to words, etc. Japanese script (Kanji at least) is harder than Korean Hangul, but on the other hand I think Japanese is easier to understand (like, you can make out words you have never heard before and look them up in a dictionary as the romanisation is straightforward, I can't say the same for Korean.)

If you want to take classes, generally I find that at least in my part of the world many more institutions offer Japanese than Korean.

I'm sort of a on a break from studying both (out of laziness, need to get back to it), I did find Japanese easier, but that may be because I started a) a year earlier with it and b) both Japanese teachers I had were very good and the Korean one was rather confusing at times but sadly there was no affordable alternative :-/ ... I do intend to go back to studying both, probably mostly on a self-study basis.... I am studying Kanji right now – I use WaniKani which is fantastic and I can't wait for Tofugu (the WaniKani makers) to finish their grammar app... I wish there was a Korean Tofugu!

Do check out Tofugu, they have a great resource page for learning Japanese materials, they review coursebooks etc. I've used "Minna No Nihongo", plus another green book ("Japanese for Busy People" – I can't remember), I think "Japanese the Manga Way" is great for getting insight into the different linguistics concepts in Japanese (but maybe I'm just a language nerd) and, as I said, WaniKani is brilliant. For Korean, "Integrated Korean" is not a bad coursebook (I had another one before, which I didn't like).

Thanks for all the recommended resources. Will definitely check them out. I'm going to take classes in the Fall at my local university. Hoping that the teachers there are good.

I was thinking about taking both beginner levels, but the University has a policy of not allowing students to register for both at the same time--rules, sigh.

About listening to and understanding Japanese better than Korean, I've heard about that. That's why I was a bit apprehensive about how good dramas would be in aiding me to understanding actually pronunciation and accurately distinguishing one word from another. I guess the only way to know is to start. lol.

Good luck to you on your language journey. Maybe we can help each other along the way. :)

I've been learning Korean for about 2+ years now, and I have to say the learning curve is slightly steep for the first 3 levels (we have 6, Korean 1 and 2 are beginners, 3 and 4 intermediate, and 5 and 6 advanced). It's great that you're thinking of taking classes, because you'll need the structured syllabus and the teacher's guidance to lay a good foundation.

As for the Japanese/Korean dilemma, if you are consistently interested in Kdramas more so than Japanese pop culture, it will help you a lot more in the long run to pick Korean. This is because you will have learnt a lot about the culture itself from what you've seen, and having a sense of the cultural context helps you to understand the language better in a lot of ways, and you will also start to notice words or grammar you've learnt in what you watch.

That said, I would advise against trying to learn Korean from Kdramas until you reach the intermediate level, because some forms of language usage in Kdramas differ from the "proper" usage, which you will need to figure out first. One example is the word "jo-ah-ha-da" (like, action verb) and "jot-da" (good, descriptive verb). In dramas, you often see the characters confess by saying "ni-ga jo-ah" rather than "neo-reul jo-ah-hae", but you will be marked as incorrect if you use them interchangeably, because strictly speaking the first one means "you are good" rather than "I like you". The action and descriptive verbs also use different grammar particles.

Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions!

Lol I know what you mean! I woke up today realized and I have to wait one more day for Forest which is one day too many is you ask me. I do wish more shows were like this. So far in terms of layered characters, cinematic directing, and whole morally grey area everyone seems to be inhabiting, I say Missing Noir M comes close.

There is also I Remember You which while seems like a very different drama and different genre on the surface, deals with a lot of questions revolving around the psychology of monsters and how human beings operate. It's similar to Forest in the sense that both these dramas let the viewer be an active participant in trying to piece together clues from visual cues as well as layered dialogue. It's not spoon fed like so many dramas are, but allows you to draw conclusions based off of what is happening on screen. Also, it had some of the best acting on the part of our murdering psychopaths in the drama. Give these two a try.

But nooooooo~ Not that I am bitter or anything.

Aahhh..have you not learn from the wise master Woo Bo? He had said - It will take a lifetime for the Prince to save his nation. Although Woo Bo is yet another useless character(he freakin knows all three - Sun, Lee Sun and Ga Eun), I have to agree with him on this one.

3

Lol good for you that you dropped Ruler. The writing is so horrid I feel for the cast. It's Hwarang all over again with the main female lead because uh-oh one of the writers are from Hwarang team!

???

There are actually some lessons we learned from Ruler.

Am so in love with Cho Seung Woo. What a great actor! Same with Duel. Am now watching only four dramas: Secret Forest, Duel, Lovers in Bloom, and Seven-Day-Queen. Awaiting King in Love and Bride of the Sea God.

Duel and Stranger are two of the best thrillers ever. Cho Seung Woo is such a great actor, and was in the first sageuk I ever remember seeing: Chunhyang (2000). He's making brain-damaged repressed prosecutors look sexy. Have to admit that the character he plays is my type. I tend to fall in love with guys like that, and my husband is like that. So, I guess one's "type" can be way more skewed that it should be. Living with someone like that is a bit of a challenge.

Am also loving Yang Se Jong, as the bad guy-psycho/good guy in Duel. What a beauty he is! And so skilled at being so innocent, melancholy, and sweet and also so angry, vengeful, and cynical. I didn't see Light's Dairy, but now I'm thinking I should sit through it. I wish i didn't have so many triggers or such persnickettiness about plots. Hating switched babies, loathing adultery, hating evil second lead women, detesting switched identities, despising rich people stealing a poor person's "rightful inheritance/babies/husband"...aargh! Plus the stress and annoyance when these plot lines come up. I miss out on a lot of good dramas because those hurdles are so difficult sometimes for me to jump over. Sometimes not, but sometimes definitely yes.

So far this year, I avoided stories of two masked princes, rich/poor siblings who aren't siblings, and a few sea lore stories. Am hoping I can watch marriage of the sea god. We shall see. Maybe I should try to force myself to see Light's Dairy and Ruler of the Mask. Am i really missing out on some good stories here?

Have a great weekend, all!

i'd say, don't bother since you have Seven Day Queen! those started out good, but slowed in the middle (i've dropped Ruler)... i suffered through Saimdang to watch/see the paintings, but the story didn't hold up, sadly.

The Big Hit is an absolute riot, if you want to get the chuckles and belly laffs...
; )

and i agree, Cho Seung Woo is so quietly sexy he's almost torture! loved him especially in The Classic... *swoons*

IMO Saimdang not worth it. 97% historically inaccurate, could have been done in 12 episodes. Overall boring. I managed to finish most of it, but did a LOT of fast forwarding.

I love Yang Se Jong and I could even get through 5 episodes of Siamdang, so a big "Don't Waste Your Time!" from me. Although, it was nice seeing some of Italy in it at the beginning. Suspicious Partner just went all noble idiot on us (but not watching this either, just reading recaps). I really liked Circle for the story, acting and pacing and it's only 12 episodes, and I'm watching Lookout and really loving the heroine in this--she's really awesome and literally kick-ass as a police detective. But the latter are more action/thriller and I noticed you aren't even considering watching these types of shows. Good luck finding something!

Yes! the writing is great, sarcastic, witty, and the editing and pace are great too. It's really an ensable cast and you are rooting for the Lookout team to catch each bad guy that is introduced. And then there's the priest, oh my word, so sexy and smoldering. *fanning self violently* I don't see any obvious tropes here. I also wrote about it in "what we are watching" this week.

hi, I just got back from Viljandi, so I am late. It is raining and I have an outdoor concert to go to, but wednesday and thursday were really warm. I posted some purple flowers from Viljandi in my Instagram. Don´t worry, I don´t intend to murder all my followers.
couldnt resist and used up 78% of my phone internet to watch... eee... umm... a drama. Again. Umm...yeah.

also, don´t you notice a little something different about me? No? Yes? I guess you haven´t paid very good attention. Do you also want to get purple flowers.

I already mentioned it on my wall, but our museum became partners with Korean Maritime Institute in Busan. I made a total gaga of myself in front of the former director, now board member and the mascot of Estonian Maritime Museum, when he said "There are some koreans here from Busan" and I squeaked " Busääään? ReallEEY? I luaaaaav Korea, huhuhuhu!" I don´t even know what else I said, I temporarily lost it and in front of all the clients at that.

dramas: why are ALL the characters in Suspicious Partner (minus Yoo Jung) so adorable? It will be hard to say goodbye to them, CHIEF BANG! How will we live without Captain, my Captain? He at least can´t leave us, ever. Uhh, the end is nearing, I know everyone minus DA will be happy (can´t guess the outcome with Hyun-Soo) and the little boy will probably be adopted by Ji Wooks´ parents, right? I can´t wait for Eun Hyuk and Ji Hae to date, they will be such a quirky pair. Just one thing: that amnesia thing they threw out left and right before airing will be like the last 3 minutes, huh.

My real life drama moment is that I thought perhaps my appendix burst, but it was gas. Now that the most embarrassing one of them is out of way, I am ready to slip and be caught by an oppa or discover a birth secret that I am actually a royal.
what kdrama trope do you secretly wish would happen to you?

Stranger aka Forest of Secrets started today in combination with THE BEST "The Best Hit."

Circle wasn't as much awesome as it claimed to be.

I'm craving a good romance. So far none from kdrama world intrigued me. Japanese Boku Unmei no Hito Desu caught my attention but still couldn't pierce my heart. The Perfect Match is good one(if you ignore all the nonsense) but not upto the level to make me budge.
Love, Timeless - latest 9-10 episodes made my heart wobble like jelly. But i still want something more.
Chinese Terrible Drama Operation Love( c grade) is remake of Proposal Daisakusen and tingling my heart but its do bad that all the atmosphere evaporates within few minutes.

That's why i'm looking for a deep romance which certainly doesn't depends upon cheap tricks of physical proximity.

So my brother is flying out to South Korea today for a 2 weeks visit. He doesn't watch kdramas so I felt the need to warn him to NEVER go into the road because he will be hit if he does so. I also asked him to bring me back a souvenir of an attractive man. Hopefully he enjoys himself!

Liar and his Lover : I am on episode 14 and really liking this drama. Love the music and the story is quite good. It has not lost my interest or felt draggy to me at any point which usually happens with rom-coms. The only criticism I would give is the acting is not very good. Joy is probably the best of the young actors and it's her first role. Not seen Lee Hyun-Woo in anything before but so far I'm not impressed with his acting skills. Thankfully the overall acting is just serviceable enough to not annoy me and to let me still really enjoy the drama.

Tunnel 2 episodes left! It was getting too intense for my mom so she needed a break. I was not happy but we will finish it tomorrow. We better! This drama is excellent. Some things I predicted but who the killer ended up being surprised me. I kept being like 'maybe it's a red herring to throw us off' but at this point that is very unlikely. I love the bromance and the overall relationship between Park Gwang-Ho and Kim Sun-Jae.

Suspicious Partner Up to episode 26. This is cute and I'm enjoying it but it is starting to lose my interest a bit. I can't even put my finger on why as the romance is heating up, the Scooby lawyer group is meshing and adorable, the killer is interesting, and Ji Chang-Wook. But I was loving this in the beginning but that love has simmered down. Don't get me wrong though, as I am still enjoying it, it just is missing that little something special for me.

Planning for a long kdrama weekend as I have the next 4 days off. Today I'll finish Liar while this weekend I'll finish Tunnel, get caught up on Suspicious Partner and start Man to Man.

Have a wonderful weekend! And for those in American, enjoy the 4th!

Open Thread, week 21! Thank the Lord it’s Friday! Fridays are usually slower days for me (only ½ day of work), but this week has been more dramatic than any Kdrama (yes, even Circle’s final two episodes can’t compare with this week—I’m deadly serious about this) that I’m hopeful next week will decidedly less dramatic.

Speaking of Circle, I am very satisfied with how this turned out, even though there are always some plot holes, the ride was definitely worth it and the acting was stellar. I can’t really complain. (And a pedestrian getting killed by someone I know-- that happened this week too.)

Then there was Lookout, which I started a couple nights ago. That day, I found out that a long-time friend was getting divorced after five kids and 20 years of marriage. Seeing her doppleganger on screen (in both looks and personality) made this show so real all of a sudden. I was so flabbergasted, I sent the screenshot to my husband who said, “Where did you get this picture of a young D…?” I’m a wreck already, and this may not be the best thing for me right now, but I’m so heartbroken that at the same time this may be just what I need. And Kim Young Kwang…I liked him already, but I may end up loving him by the end of this.

Husband also found “I Need Romance 3” on Netflix this week and we watched 4 episodes, when he abruptly stopped and said, “That’s good, I know it’ll work out now, and I don’t need to see the rest.” I’m like, “Whaaaaa?” He says he’s just being “efficient” in his drama watching. LOL!

Otherwise, humor is always the best medicine for a rough week, so I have this story from work…

Background: I’m teaching this week in clinic, and the student I had is an undergraduate who did some of his studies in China and girlfriend is Philippino. He’s also a blond kid with glasses and a James Dean haircut.

Me: So are you fluent in Mandarin?

Student: I was there for 6 months and no one spoke English, so I can get by and not starve on the street, if that’s what you mean. However, there was a Korean student who lived next to me in the dorm, and he was fluent in both English and Mandarin. He was just really smart. He would read the ACT prep book in English, just for fun.

*Nurse walks in*

Me: Did you watch any of the Chinese dramas while you were there?

Student: Not really, I don’t understand it that well.

Nurse: Oh, Dr. Le likes those Korean dramas!

*Now, all my nurses know of my mild addiction to dramas, as I usually tell them the plots of the ones I’m watching at the time. Otherwise, I do try to look professional at work and don’t mention them.*

Student: Which ones have you seen?

Me: *Jaw drops, do you really want to know? Or are you just humoring me because I’m giving you a grade and an evaluation at the end of the week?*

Me: Well, I’m very picky since I don’t have a lot of time, but one that I really enjoyed recently that was medically related was Dr. Kim. Actually, Romantic...

2
6
reply

Required fields are marked *

...Teacher Doctor Kim. They actually get the medicine/surgical scenes right for the most part.

Nurse: She’s been trying to get us to watch it since last winter!

Student: *Smiling with a bit of humor in his speech* That even SOUNDS like a Korean drama! *Back-peddling, embarrassed, when I looked at him with my head cocked over to the side, realizing he has to have seen some dramas to know the ridiculousness of their titles.* Uh, I’ve seen some with my girlfriend.

*All three of us start laughing, because although my student is this white kid from small-town middle America, he at least has seen enough of the world to recognize a Korean drama title. And, btw he did get a great evaluation.*

Moral of the Story: You never know where you will find a kdrama kindred spirit.

2nd Moral: When life gets stressful, kdramas keep us sane, for the most part.

3rd Moral: Here’s to a great weekend, Beanies!

The open thread is for any topic, so J-dramas do get mentioned here. If you scroll through older open threads, you'll regularly find someone asking for j-drama recs and people responding.

What have you watched (& liked)?

From the last half year or so I'd recommend:
Nigeru wa Haji da ga Yaku ni Tatsu (romance – quirky, but actually pitch-perfect in every way)
Reverse
Virtual Detective Tabito Higurashi (detective, with sci-fi element)

Due to lack of subs, I haven't finished these, although they started off promising:
Quartet
Jimi ni Sugoi! (workplace drama + romance)
Frankenstein's Love (this a romance, with a supernatural element)

I don't recommend the romance "Everyone's Getting Married" from this year, it had promise but ultimately was quite atrocious (the male lead turns out to be nothing more than a wet dishrag).

HISTORICAL /
JIN. It is a must watch. I personally don't like historical dramas but this won me over completely. Also has a teeeeny bit of romance/crushing going on, and my favorite confession in the history of dramas came from its second season/series finale.

ROMANCE /
Pride (oldie, but required viewing IMO)
Long Vacation (even older than Pride, also stars Kimura Takuya in his prime)
Unmei ni, Nita Koi

(I've watched a lot of romcoms, but I don't think they're necessarily good though lol...)

I finished Quartet and it was very good and stars some of the best actors/actresses in Japan. It was written by Sakamoto Yuji, who wrote Mother (which is being remade/will star Lee Boyoung). If you really want to get your heart broken, definitely try that drama LOL.

There are some good (and of course some really bad) J-dramas, but it seems much harder to find any with good subtitles. Viki and DramaFever seem to be picking up a few more, but it seems like most are only available on the "unlicensed" sites, and translations can be ... "variable".

0

Required fields are marked *

Most of J-drama subtitles are usually made by fan-subbers and It has been like that for a quite long time. For translations, you can pick from the ones with long-track records (like Heiwa), or you can ask people on d-addicts. The viewers and communities also used to rely a lot from torrent, since It seems that most of J-dramas aren't licensed outside Japan due to only be produced for domestic viewing. :)

Hello! After a looooong hiatus due to school work, I am now starting to watch Korean dramas again. I just finished binge watching Man to Man and totally loved it. Though there are parts that are worth criticizing about, I loved the characters' relationships and especially its COMEDY. Its comedic scenes are straight up hilarious. Regarding this, can you suggest me dramas with that kind of comedic level? I am currently watching the Best Hit and even though I love the story and Yoon Shi Yoon, it never really cracks me up as much as Man to Man did. Thank you in advance! :)

Chief Kim, Oh My Ghost, Oh My Venus, Marriage not Dating, Reply 1997,1994 or 1988, Sound of Your Heart, Strong Woman Do Bong Soon, Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo, My Girlfriend is a Gumiho, Please Come Back Mister. These all give me good laugh and my happy pills.

So I haven't watched a K-drama since roughly October of 2015. I'm considering starting again and I'd like some recommendations. Some of my favorite shows were Soul/Han, Answer Me 1997, Healer, Cheer Up!, most everything written by Noh Hee-kyung especially Goodbye Solo, Ten, and many more that I honestly don't remember.

If you enjoy Answer Me 1997, you'd probably love Answer Me 1994 and 1988!

Noh Heekyung recent drama was not that good, but at least it has a new theme so you might like to watch it. + Reply 1988 is one of the best dramas of the recent years

I'm into low rating dramas lately (Tomorrow with You, Seven Day Queen) because sadly, quality doesn't translate into ratings.

I don't want to spend money on internet traffic to download My Sassy girl, so I read the recaps here. I'd like to thank the writer of the recaps for this drama. It is nice and wellwritten.
