there's ofc more to this list but i don't want to bore you with what you guys already know -- everything is sh!t amazing and askdjfasldkfjlj i'm officially a a sloth thriving on a daily dose of my korean dramas.

Well, I am totally ruined by Forest of Secrets that all other dramas pale into the background (FMW, FIS, and SP which I had dropped anyway. Anyway, weekend is here and two more episodes at doorstep.

Only started FOS a few days ago and OMG it is like another Signal (and may even be better). The writing, directing, cinematography, and ACTING!! Each episode is like a movie except you don't want it to stop - but you really can't binge watch because there's so much to digest. Haven't seen such an intelligent show for a long while.

Suspicious Partner and Fight My Way have been hitting it out of the park recently. I'm surprised that I have been able to identify with both in one way or another. I usually hate the awkwardness that these dramas tend to have, but I think because the acting is top notch, I'm able to enjoy them.

I'm also watching a C-drama at the moment called Rush to the Dead Summer which is also pretty enjoyable. It has its really annoying moments, but at its core, I really like it.

What sucks is that there are so many other dramas to watch at the moment: Circle, Lookout, and The Best Hit are just three of the many I need to watch. So many dramas, so little time.

The current batch of dramas is so good! I'm watching 7DQ, FMW, and SP and I want to start Lookout, Forest of Secrets, and the Best Hit. Then these drama catnips keep on adding dramas to my watch list. Otteokke?! How will I ever watch everything?!

and when i realized one of the twice girls is her real life sister.. she became my fav (just by association.. and i don't care a damn about kpop.. i think cheer up, tt, signal have to be the only kpop songs i know of ) :P

You know, I can spend hours talking about this drama and explaining how a perfect show it is but you're only going to figure it out if you watch the first episodes. (what? Is it obvious? I thought it was some kind of magic spell...).
No seriously, using beanies words, this drama is truly a "masterpiece" (@outofthisworld). It is the kind of drama where you don't have to worry about the acting, the directing, the writing or whatever it is. You just have to sit down and enjoy it.
" It’s definitely the type of crime show that requires all of your attention, while at the same time, you want to give it your full attention"(@sailorjumun).
"My only complain - I can't get enough of this show. Suddenly, all other shows feel like fillers of the week to help me get to the weekend" (@outofthisworld). Can you stop being everywhere unnie/oppa? hmm
"I've not felt this excited for a show since signal. The directing, acting and cinematography are top notch as it was there" (@rookie).
And finally, it is the kind of show that can make you go crazy beacause of a smile (@bambi, @wonid2017 won't say otherwise. hehe) and promise you'll know about what I am talking as soon as you start watching it. After all, it is just on episode 6.... six hours on binge watching FOS is nothing but healthy, right?

I didn't watch Tunnel, unfortunately, so I can't say too much about that one, but many Beanies did like it. Right now, I'm totally into Fight My Way, Suspicious Partner and Seven Day Queen. There all great!

Secret Forest and Duel! Period! Must-sees.

This description is perfect for Cheese in the Trap...I just can't with the last half of that drama. Oh what could have been. Makes me cry like I've lost a relationship with so much potential.

I love my drama writers too but sometimes you watch an episodes and it's like what happened people? Did you have a long lunch, get sleepy and let a puppy wander on your keyboard?

The whole painful-past thing annoys me to DEATH so I'm with you on this!! Here are a few that have fewer flashbacks than most, although it's hard to find a Kdrama without *any* flashbacks:
Jealousy Incarnate, which deals with present struggles and is less about the past ones. Oh My Ghostess, again focuses more on the present and less on the past. Descendants of the Sun has very minor flashbacks to the past, and has more fun/funny flashbacks than sad ones. Any of the Answer Me series (1988 is my favorite) focus on the current time instead of the past. My Girlfriend is a Gumiho has a premise that doesn't require the past to be amazing (I honestly can't remember how much it flashed back from the past but it wasn't enough to ruin it for me!). Splash Splash Love is short and because of that it has very little flashback of any kind. A Witch's Romance has only flashbacks to a recent past relationship, not lengthy family-related flashbacks. The Liar and His Love (Lovely Love Lie) has only minor references to the past. Sweet 18 is an older drama and super cute, and it very rarely flashes to anything in the past (other than the meet-cute between the two leads). Marriage, Not Dating has minor flashbacks but mostly present-time focus.
I'm sure there are others, but this is what I can think of off the top of my head!!
To avoid: Pinocchio, LOL!!! Just say no to ENDLESS family-related horrifying traumatic flashbacks. :D

Strong Woman Do Bong Soon didn't dwell much on tragic pasts. I recall the male lead had some abandonment stuff but didn't spend a ton of time in broody tortured flashbacks.

I'm also behind of FOS, and seeing everyone is actively commenting in recap thread made me jealous lol. I have to try to watch it fast for upcoming epi and be more active on the next recap thread.

I haven't watched it myself, but The Best Hit has been getting some pretty good comments!

I like Seven Day Queen. It's nicely-written and acted and directed. I'm just not sure if you will like it. They stretched Yeonsangun's character to make the conflicts more balanced (which I admit doesn't affect me much since I'm ignorant of Korean History.) But I remember you like analyzing the historical connections in dramas, so the overly whitewashed Yeongsangun might annoy you. :(

It'd be great to have you and other history-buff beanies join the comments though! I enjoy reading the extra pieces of history shared in the comments section.

Reply88's ending was totally more heartbreaking than the other two because it highlighted that the giant street/family broke up into tiny subgroups and moved on to other things. T___T

97 and 94 teams also grew up and led different lives with the occasional loud reunions, but they didn't wave the empty houses in our faces like how 88 did. Not that I hate 88 for it. It's just so raw and made saying goodbye to the show that much more difficult.

AGHHHH Reply 1988! Don't remind me of this drama~! This was the only Reply series that I watched live and so my heartbreak was tenfold by the end of it. While the boys broke me heart, the dads are still my favorite characters and the ones I cried the hardest for. There is something so emotionally poignant when you began to see your fathers are not just your guardians and superman but as flawed people with lives and struggles of their own. That emotional fragility of that moment always gets me.

Weightlifting Fairy: hahaha She does yell and get angry all the time. I can completely see how it can grate on someone but I dunno Lee Sung-kyung interpretation of Kim Bok-joo was actually really endearing to me. Bok-joo is played as young adult who's awkward, immature and gruff. She doesn't act "lady like." I dunno I like that she's a bit of a messy personality.

I'm so sorry to hear that you've been going through a lot this week. It's unfortunate that sometimes everything seems to be out to get at you all at once. I do hope after given some time to think about it, your father would agree to your suggestion that he have a health check, especially if he knows how much he matters to you. I'm pretty sure that knowing that, he will understand no matter how hard he tries to downplay his health problems, it wouldn't make it any easier for you as his child. I also hope your cousin would get better soon after the surgery.

As for YAI and SIG, I have read the news elsewhere and it looks like the international fanbase is more understanding re. their health issues. I don't know if that would offer you some comfort but I think there would be people out there who would understand the severity of YAI's condition. Someone said that if he took a hiatus from acting projects and return much later the backlash might die down a bit. I do hope that would be the case for him.

I really hope your father is ok! My sister is very reluctant to see doctors and it is upsetting and frustrating when something serious could be wrong. I hope your dad is ok and it's nothing serious!

I wasn't aware about YAI and SIG military exemptions. But why are they getting backlash for legit medical reasons? I can understand if they somehow were trying to avoid going into the military, but I don't get why having a health exemption causes backlash. Is it their fault they have health issues? And how come it's ok when normal people have health exemptions? I am just very confused by this.

Hi MMMkitty, you truly have had a black cloud week and I hope it will blow away quickly. That's a lot of money and it stinks how we're so dependent on our phones that fixing it is almost no more optional than fixing a broken foot. And then the health problems of your loved ones, no matter you are having a physical and mental reaction of your own. You can't control the knetizens reactions, they are often notoriously unfair and it will blow over. YAI and SIG will be back stronger than ever, just it will take time. Your cousin will recover quickly. You need to take care of you as best you can and give yourself breaks. I hope your dad will feel better soon and then take your advice and get a full health checkup, he's at a good age for a baseline set of data on his general health. He's probably scared of what it may show, so it may take a lot of support and coaxing on your part. Good luck! It's not always easy to be a good daughter ?

Father Is Strange? It's a weekend show but it's really good. Not draggy, not a lot of annoying characters-- and even the annoying ones get painted with a different side to them (or karma).

Looking forward to Strongest Deliveryman too, I'm hanging in there till end July! I'm so glad we didn't have to wait long to see Go Kyungpyo on our screens again ^^

I hate Love Triangle.. It brings a cancer to me. I stan The Best Hit because it feels like watching sitcom but if writer throw love triangle then it will change into Makjang lol

I am really confused about the love triangle in The Best Hit because how on earth are they going to resolve it? Hyun Jae can't possibly fall in love with Woo Seung seeing as how he has to go back in time and father Ji hoon. And so far, it doesn't seem like he had any feelings towards Bo-hee or would even consider having any relationship with her. So I am confused about how they will resolve this whole thing. Will Hyun Jae sacrifice his love for Woo Seung (I am presuming he will fall in love with her since the show seems to be hinting that) for his son. Will he ever have a relationship with Bo-hee? Is Ji hoon even his son? I mean we only have Bo-hee's word for it and so far it doesn't seem to me that's possible since Hyun jae has shown minimal interest in her.

I feel the same way about "Circle" towards the end. I kind of eye roll the ending especially when it comes to Byul's origin with questions that went unanswered.

@hades I have recently started learning Korean. So far with K-dramas I have become familiar enough with the language to understand about 80% of the dialogues and usually try to watch things in raw to get a feel of what they are saying. I find it's easier to learn through hearing phrases and words in context and that way I can remember then better.

I have also looked up online Korean language classes which mainly teach reading and writing. I feel Hangeul it's much easier to learn than Japanese letters though it's still tricky.

I started learning Japanese in my senior year of high and it was pretty easy. The sentence struture and grammar are simple enough to remember but the writing system isn't. Since there are 2 writing systems: katakana(relatively easy) and kanji(FREAKING hard) it's important to know both.

As for korean since you watch dramas it'all be a bit easier. It's important to learn Hangul!!! Stay away from romanization at all costs!! Hangul can be learned in a couple hours and from there start looking at vocab. Whenever Hangul comes up on the screen always try to see if you can just read it. Variety shows are a good place to get exposure to sentence structure since they put up Korean subs.

I've learned korean by hearing it enough in shows and paying attention to what's said vs what's written on the screen.

I have learnt Japanese for three years and even went on to take the JLPT tests... though I came to realise that it is hard to advance past reading and writing if you don't practise listening or talking. In my case, I stopped Japanese language studies for two years when I went for overseas studies in the UK. During this time, my love for korean dramas and variety shows overtook my love for Japanese dramas and mangas. After 2 years, most of my Japanese knowledge had slipped through my fingers and I cannot speak anything more complicated than "Kore wa ringo desu". Lol.

I have recently started to learn Korean language through the online Coursera platform, and I find that there are similarities between Hangeul and the Japanese Hiragana/Katakana characters and sounds. The Hangeul is actually simple to read once you get familiar with the vowels and consonants. Although I am just starting, I am hoping that Korean will be easier to grasp since I do have a healthy dose of kdramas that I cannot seem to finish watching. There are just too many good dramas out there recently!

Either way, my advice is just to follow your gut feel. It takes alot of love for the language and culture to commit and spend time and efforts to master the language, understand the rules of the grammar and sentence structure, vocab grinding etc. Whichever language that you choose to learn first, I have no doubt that you will enjoy the process and come to like the language even more than when you first started. =)

Lol I know what you mean! I woke up today realized and I have to wait one more day for Forest which is one day too many is you ask me. I do wish more shows were like this. So far in terms of layered characters, cinematic directing, and whole morally grey area everyone seems to be inhabiting, I say Missing Noir M comes close.

There is also I Remember You which while seems like a very different drama and different genre on the surface, deals with a lot of questions revolving around the psychology of monsters and how human beings operate. It's similar to Forest in the sense that both these dramas let the viewer be an active participant in trying to piece together clues from visual cues as well as layered dialogue. It's not spoon fed like so many dramas are, but allows you to draw conclusions based off of what is happening on screen. Also, it had some of the best acting on the part of our murdering psychopaths in the drama. Give these two a try.

If we had more drama like this, i wouldn't be able to live my life. I would spend it glued to my screen, bingwatching all the day.
