[Dramaland Catnip] Ragtag bands of misfits

Shut Up Flower Boy Band

There’s nothing quite so appealing as watching a group of misfits being forced to work together to achieve a common goal, whether it’s winning a music competition, solving crime, or just surviving life in general.

While there is no “ragtag” age limit, these misfits are most often found in schools, because there’s no clearer delineation of who is an outsider that strays from the norm than the strict-yet-mysterious social structuring that is high school. Ah, the joys of being a teenager.

I have an undying love for Monstar and Persevere, Gu Hae-ra that goes beyond all sense and reason, one that makes me periodically stalk Mnet for any news of any potential upcoming music-centric drama because I know I would watch it and love it no matter what, even knowing exactly how it would play out.

This potential future future drama would be filled with quirky characters that secretly have boatloads of talent and something to prove, despite their upbringings that may leave something to be desired. I know that I would fall in love with the über-talented vocal-powerhouse who doesn’t fit societal norms of beauty and who secretly has a crush on the most adorable boy there (don’t even get me started on my obsession with the Milky Couple from Dream High).

Dream High

I know that I would be impatiently waiting for the moment when the reluctant manger who was roped into leading this ragtag “band” eventually realizes how much he cares about them, and they, in turn, see him as the mentor and father figure they’ve always wanted. I know I will cry at their final triumphant performance because, you see, they are performing for themselves and the hope and trust they have in each other.

What’s Up? is one of my all-time favorite dramas because it exemplifies something that I’ve loved since childhood, the Mickey Rooney/Judy Garland conceit of “Let’s put on a show!” as the foolproof way to save the day. Except not every day can be saved, can it? But if you have heart — if you learn to trust in yourself and those around you, maybe you can learn to sing again and gain the approval of the red tracksuit ghost.

What’s Up

Maybe you can cut off your hair and choose your own path instead of fulfilling your overbearing mother’s ambitions for your life. Maybe you will sacrifice your bubbly joy and naïveté in order to get one step closer to accomplishing the goal of becoming a professional singer. Maybe you will learn to trust in your friends and classmates, who are more loyal than your flesh-and-blood family will ever be.

Because that’s what a ragtag bunch is, in the end — family. They are the only people they can truly lean on, as exemplified in Shut Up Flower Boy Band. No matter what mishaps they got into, no matter how often they fought, they still managed to come back together — because what was most important is that they had each other. Even at the end, when the band has decided to go their separate ways, they know that they are meant to be together onstage one last time.

Persevere, Gu Hae-ra

There’s no guarantee these musical misfits will all be superstars — in fact, so often they aren’t. The moment passes and everyone moves on. Yet there will forever remain that glorious sensation when the competition is won, when the last note is sung and the fists are pumped into the air in a triumph of victory — that instant is captured forever and can never be forgotten. For just one brief second, these misfits achieved their goal and everything was right in the world.

Music isn’t the only reason for misfits to find each other: Mysteries work, too. My love of teens solving crimes probably comes from all the Nancy Drew books I read as a kid, but I would honestly much rather watch the Seonam Girls’ High Investigation Unit help their fellow classmates get to the bottom of the mysteries surrounding them than whatever new detective-prosecutor procedural dramaland cooks up (and I say that as a fan of crime dramas!). Experiencing the girls use their skills to help others and support each other — while still going through all the normal issues that high school brings — is much more relatable to me than seeing a dozen corrupt chaebols and political officials lives be ruined, or one serial-killer put behind bars.

White Christmas

I also love when the misfits are forced together against their will, yet they gradually learn to work as a unit. In the beginning of White Christmas, the students are left behind because they think it’s something private, a matter only they can deal with. But in reality they were chosen, and watching them work through their own issues as they realize what horror is trapped with them is something that never grows old. No matter how many times I’ve seen this drama, I always come away with new insights about the characters that make me wonder just how thin the line is between “monster” and “human.”

Not all misfits need to come together for some grand purpose, though. Not everyone can win a record deal or capture a criminal. No, sometimes simply the act of living, of trying to get through each day the best you can, is enough to pull everyone together towards one common goal — or rather, under one common roof.

Nothing will get my attention faster than a drama that has a variety of people living in the same house. Whether it’s roommates in an apartment like Age of Youth or a boardinghouse like Answer Me 1994, I’m suddenly there with my suitcase, ready to move in. It’s taking the forced cohabitation trope and turning it up to eleven, because instead of two people with disparate personalities trying to figure out how to live together, it’s now five people, or six, or maybe even more.

Answer Me 1994

This kind of boarding situation does tend to lend itself more towards the college-age students, since those are the ones who are most likely willing to share space so they can afford to live there. But not always. Sometimes even those who are out in the “real” world still need a cheap place to call home when the tiny cramped officetels just won’t cut it. Which is why, despite how frustrated I get when I think about the “what could’ve beens” if the show had been allowed to go its full run, Surplus Princess has a dear place in my heart. Here live some odd ducks indeed, and not just because one is secretly a mermaid.

These are the folk who struggle to fit into society’s requirements of what it means to be a proper grown-up with a real job and a real apartment, and all the trappings that come with it. While they may not have the success the world tells them they should, at least they have each other, as weird and wonderful as they are. Despite their varied backgrounds and personalities, they will come to each other’s aid in a blink of an eye, no matter how ridiculous the task. True friendship, true family — and all just because they happen to share a common living space.

Surplus Princess

The concept of found families is a weakness of mine that could probably be considered its own brand of catnip, but it bleeds enough into this conceit of ragtag misfits that the Venn diagram is comfortably overlapping, and sometimes they might even be interchangeable. Misfits and found families aren’t just for teenagers, though. While the easiest examples of these tropes have me looking at high school and college dramas, I can’t forget the dramas where adults come together to reluctantly save the day.

Especially when it’s adults committing crime. Is there a more iconic example of a ragtag band of misfits than the criminals-turned-heroes of Police Unit 38? (Which is also known in some parts as Squad 38, and if this bunch isn’t “squad goals,” then I don’t know what is.) Every character has unique skills that allow them to pull off their elaborate cons, and every character continues to firmly insist they prefer to work alone. Yeah. Sure. But over time, they come to appreciate how it feels to work together — and use their skills for good. (Or as good as they can get.)

Police Unit 38

They’re not the only ragtag criminals that managed to steal my heart, though, because if I talk about boardinghouses or found families, then I can’t forget about the wonderful Yoo-na’s Street. I’ve never had the desire to be a petty criminal before, but I’d give anything to be a part of Yoo-na’s gang and join her family of misfits, if only to listen to the stories of their lives and challenge expectations of what is right and wrong.

Thank goodness dramaland allows me to do just that, though, whenever I want. The ragtag band of misfits is my catnip because while I may enjoy other dramas — with their chaebols and Candys, cops and prosecutors, love triangles and misunderstandings, hijinx and angst — I don’t usually have a burning desire to somehow move in and be a part of that world like I do when it’s a handful of broken characters coming together to somehow make each other whole.

Age of Youth

Perhaps what it really comes down to is that I, too, am a misfit, longing for a place to belong. I watch dramas that aren’t in my native tongue and ignore the flashy made-in-Hollywood shows, thereby losing out on the “water-cooler” camaraderie that comes from being aware of current pop culture. I am proud of my independence, but sometimes a quiet apartment can be lonely when you’re longing for a partner in crime to go on adventures with. Sometimes I sing and dance in the kitchen, holding a spoon like a microphone while I pretend I’m a rock star, even though I know I’ll balk the moment someone invites me to karaoke.

I am a misfit in my own world, longing for something to be a part of so I can look around and say, “Look what we’ve accomplished!” — be it glory, fame, or friendship. I may still struggle to cobble together my own squad (or be unceremoniously dragged into someone else’s — because let’s be honest, if I were one of the Age of Youth ladies, I’d definitely be more Yoo Eun-jae than Song Ji-won), but I will forever enjoy watching those archetypes I hold so dear as they continue their predictable-but-heartwarming underdog story where the real winners are the ones who believed in each other.

Love your last two paragraphs, @odilettante. This one isn't my catnip, but I enjoyed a good story of ensemble cast (especially with high school settings). Sometimes focusing the story to several character's intertwined lives is more heartwarming and felt much real than when the story gave us a set of leads and second leads.

Ugh I want to relive the feels of watching Monstar again. It was such an unexpected gem! Thank you!! I didn't realize I had a ragtag catnip too but as you were going through the shows, I'm like yeah, oh yeah, yup hmm mmm!!

Cheer Up and Solomon's Perjury are two other dramas with a really endearing ragtag crew too in my opinion. The employees of Dating Agency Cyrano weren't bad either. But besides that I think you nailed some of my favourites. White Christmas, Monstar and What's Up were soooo good!

I relate so much to your last two paragraphs! I'm surrounded by people who are obsessed with Dr. Who and everything Marvel, but when I bring up k-dramas/pop, you can hear the crickets in the background. That's why I love this community! I'm glad to at least be virtually surrounded by those who love what I love.

@odilettante THIS. I love this. This was part of the reason I loved the ending of Shut Up Flower Boy Band so much. I think we all relate to having that moment where everything was wonderful and perfect, and it's what keeps up going now.

This is definitely a catnip for me -- especially because it always reminds me so much of my university days. Age of Youth especially brought up a lot of feels for me (I also lived in a house with six girls and one working shower), but any band of misfits is one I love watching.

Can we talk about SUFBB witch manager? I'm also a fan of the show, but I think my favorite character is often the maligned but ultimately benevolent parent figure, _especially_ if they were at first maligned. Often they play the "reality" card, but are able to get swept up in the dream. Or the den mother is Age of Youth. I loved the last scene with her.

Oh wow :') @odilettante, your whole schpel about being a misfit yourself because of your "unconventional" preference to watch Korean dramas and listen to K-pop instead of the mainstream American music really got to me... Because that is essentially me also in a nutshell... I'm happy to be able to rediscover a sense of belonging that I have been struggling to feel for the last little while in the Dramabeans community, so thank you for that =)
Dang, ragtag teams and misfits--- where do I begin?? I have to say that "Dream High" season 1 is definitely one that has stuck all these years, and our beloved misfits of the "Reply" series also have a special place in my heart <3 Another ensemble that I can think of, but don't know if it would fit under this category, though, is our beloved "Joseon F4": None of them really ever fit in with the rest of the student body at Sungkyunkwan-- Yoon Hee was a girl dress a boy who was afraid that her secret would be exposed if she got too close to anyone; Lee Sun Joon was the "genius" of the school but because of his father's position in court being on opposing sides of the father of the Student President, he was essentially made into a cast out; Moon Jae Shin a.k.a. "Goel Oh" never fit in with anyone in the first place and had a boatload of his own secrets to be kept; and Gu Yong Ha was the "playboy" who hid behind his facade of happiness to hide his own insecurities and of never fitting in with anyon and never having a core group of people he could turn to...
Sigh, the wonders of youth and the struggles of trying to find one's place and identity in this cruel, cruel world ???

This entire post was so heartwarming and touching to read. I very much sympathize with this post. What gets me with the ragtag band of misfits is the relationship between the characters. Well developed friendships/relationships between characters are my quickest undoing. It makes me so happy to watch people who are as lost in the world as I often feel coming together to support, love and cheer on one another. And even when they have their disagreements and fights they don't lose that sense of "I'm here for you; I've still got your back; Where do you want me to help you bury the dead body?; etc".

I especially love the ragtag group when its a group of females. Their plight always resonates so strongly with me. Age of youth is hands down one of my favorite dramas simply on the basis of the character relationships and the camaraderie/family that they built with another. I laughed and cried in equal measure while watching it. How the girls came together to support Jin Myung at her brother's funeral (and they were so adorably clueless about what to do), how every single one of them went and worked the night shift for her when she couldn't. How they all banded together to save Ye Eun despite the danger of the situation. And many other little moments that meant so much.

It's that sense of sisterhood/brotherhood and family where you immediately step in to protect each other either without thinking of the consequences first or despite knowing the consequences.

I love romance just as much as the next person but NOTHING pulls at my heartstrings more strongly, NOTHING makes me tear up faster than a good drama with strong friendships and family bonds (be they blood-related or self-made). It will ALWAYS get me. Right in the heart. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.

Evasive Inquiry Agency is the ultimate band-of-misfits catnip for me! Age of Youth hit the spot as well, though, I agree. Park Yeon-seon is definitely the master when it comes to quirky characters bonding through (bizarre) shared experiences. She has this incredible ability to make ridiculous people and events feel so real at heart.

What a great post-- and I'm right there with you. The combination of misfits and music is especially potent catnip for me. I love nearly all of the dramas you mentioned (but there are a couple I haven't seen).

I learned the word "misfit" from watching Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer as a young girl, and have been drawn to stories of misfits triumphing (or at least learning to appreciate their uniqueness) ever since.

I'm so grateful that Dramabeans is a sort of virtual water-cooler around which we misfits from around the world can hang out together!

Beautifully put! ❤️️ I love everything about this post, even though this catnip isn't for me. I do enjoy stories with good squads, so I'll have to check out some of these dramas you've mentioned, if I can find the time that is ?. My favourite part of these kinds of stories is when they first start to learn things about one another and people notice and the small gestures they do to show they care just kills me every time.

Okay, that nearly had me in tears over my breakfast. I relate to this so much. I'm a writer - which is a lonely profession by definition - and when I celebrate success by opening a bottle of wine by myself and dancing around the kitchen by myself followed by watching an episode of my favourite kdrama as a treat, I realise that I'm totally a misfit.

I'm supposed to be working, but maybe now I'll have to watch a bit of Shut Up FBB again.

Wow odilettante! What a lovely post-essay-article with heart. Thank you for sharing your personal story. I am touched and full of feels about it, and identify with it too... that loneliness, that knowing one cannot fit in and no one to share moments with. What a blessing and a relief, to have this place to let out these thoughts. ?

While not exactly a catnip for me, I do always look forward to watching groups of individuals, bringing with them, all their flaws and strong points, to form, amidst much rubbing off of sharp corners ?, a team that works and a caring community. I look for this in just about any show I watch, and rejoice heartily ? when I see at least 2 if not more characters, able to cooperate and communicate.

Thanks once again, odilettante. ? I look forward to reading you again.

I enjoyed Moorim school as imperfect as it was, because it was good fun. And it's catnip, definitely. Sassy Go Go too should fall into that category!

Speaking of unmentioned shows, I'm surprised that TLAHL isn't mentioned. Especially seeing that nearly every drama odi named have a place in my own My Shows tab (seriously, like a ton of them), and the fact that I also have a thing for Music shows. TLAHL is my favorite from the genre, with the best friendships, bromance, etc... so it's surprising... I wonder if there's a reason odilettante didn't like the show?

Haha, that's ok, it's my fault for assuming you have watched it, plenty others didn't too. I love it but it's not the kind of exciting show that makes people want to jump in. It has no fancy unpredictable plot, mostly just relies on having heart more than anything. Given how lowkey it is, it's not surprising that there is no hype to start it :)

And I don't know about anyone else, but I'd read your list. Or better yet, you can just write longer and make the essay into a long dissertation and I would read all of it too. Didn't you recap Dear My Friends too? Is it wrong of me to think they're also a band of misfits, as strange as that sounds talking about them as if they're so young :) Didn't you recap Misaeng too? It goes up there with PU38 as great pairing of young/older pairings. I would count them as misfits of sorts within the rigid confines of the office. Now that I think about, you get the best drama to recaps. Last was great too and I love the neighborhood there and it felt also misfit-ish. And here I go, chatting away off topic again... Maybe my idea about a dissertation isn't so great after all....

I do get all the best dramas! At least the best dramas for me!

There actually was an earlier draft that did include a mention of Last, and I'd toyed with Misaeng/Dear My Friends/Midnight Diner/etc but then that would have led me further afield and I was trying to keep things relatively contained and organized, rather than simply sweeping my arms wide open and declaring all the dramas I've ever loved to be my catnip.

3

And you got Duel this time around too!

Haha, see, if it was me, I would totally be unable to stop talking tangents and list every drama I ever loved. I can't contain myself when it regards k-dramas, which is I guess why I'm not a recapper and you are, an a great one at that :)

0

Haha @odilettante I hope u wont mind the dramas we added, we are dramadorks who love if there're more dramas to talk about.

@chaimaa
Then, aren't we catnip real life too? Misfitted group of grownups, sasaeng abt oppa & dongsaeng, thrown into one group band called dramabeans. Lmao.

0

Yessss. This is definitely my favorite one yet! I really relate to your feelings about wanting your own rag-tag group of misfits to go through life with. You mentioned so many of my most memorable misfits in dramas: What's Up, SUFBB, Answer Me, Age of Youth, White Christmas, etc.

Mixed-up Investigative Agency and Bad Family are some other dramas with a wonderful rag-tag group coming together. Mixed-up Investigative Agency, especially, made me feel like unforgettable adventures lurked around every corner, even for the slackers and misfits and all those who'd let life pass them by.

Thank you @odilettante for such a lovely post. I feel I know you better after this, especially the concluding paragraphs. It's not my catnip, but I do enjoy it.

Speaking of which, The Best Hit is assembling its own band of misfits. There are the ones who are struggling at the bottom of the food chain, and the ones who seem to have made it. But being a successful idol doesn't mean you've actually found a squad. It can be lonely in the limelight too (ugh, Dream High did that to me).

The theme of a ragtag team working together speaks to the idealists among us who believe that despite differences in personalities, backgrounds, or opinions we can always find understanding and support to achieve the common goal. This concept is perhaps even more appealing today amidst the seeming disintegration of institutions like the United Nations and NATO.

Last Friends is quite an old drama from 2008, but it's so good that I still revisit it from time to time. Personally I think it's Ueno Juri's best drama, ever, because it showed off her versatility as an actress. I initially thought she was a tom-boy in real life because she was so convincing in her role... I shall not give any more spoilers, but hopefully you'll watch and enjoy it as much as I do! Happy watching!

Oh my gosh, great post and very well-put! I love this trope and I love all of the shows you included as well -- especially White Christmas, wherein you hope for the survival of the characters' friendship just as much as the characters themselves!!

One thing, though, is that I get incredibly aggravated when the side characters are much more likable or interesting than the main characters, but the drama spends too much time on the mains instead. So much wasted potential...
