Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching

Did you make it through the pre-emptions this week? With the election looming, will you be able to make it through even more of them next week? I’m choosing to think positively and take this time to catch up to things that had been put on hold; maybe I’ll even pick up something entirely old, or entirely new. Nothing blue, though, since I’ve been gravitating toward dramas that pick up my mood and make me happy. There’ll always be time to cry later! –javabeans

Chicago Typewriter: I feel like this show took a little while to get to the point, but I do now find the story intriguing—and even better, unpredictable in an enjoyable way; I have no idea where it’s going or what kind of ending to expect, but I don’t mind going along for the ride. I don’t feel emotionally connected to most of the characters, which is a slight disappointment (though I do feel sympathy for Go Kyung-pyo—there’s always something so sweet, pathetic, and wistful about a ghost who wants more than his noncorporeal form can provide), but the plot is compelling enough to keep my interest.
Man to Man: This show is fluffier than I was expecting, but I in no way find this to be a detriment; most spy-action dramas have a tendency to take themselves too seriously, and often turn unintentionally cheesy. Man to Man has its cheesy tendencies too, but the difference is that it’s entirely intentional, and the humor, while a little broader than I’d prefer, is definitely its best asset. That and Park Hae-jin’s deadpan acting, though I’d argue that that’s just another facet of the humor, where his character is entirely humorless but the actor is working that entirely for comedic effect. The plot is kinda B-list and the story pretexts somewhat flimsy, but the show has a feel-good, silly-funny vibe that I’m enjoying.
Father, I’ll Take Care of You: As we head into the final week, I’m expecting some hastily tied ends, and while I’m not sure I’ll be completely content with the way things wrap up, I’m hoping for some satisfying resolutions. I do really appreciate that the story once again is closing around the concept that family is as much (if not more) about nurture than nature, and that pure blood ties don’t always win out over emotional bonds. It’s refreshing that Hyun-woo is acknowledging now that there’s value to the time his blood brother spent with his non-blood family, which is mirrored in Dong-hee wanting to stay with the dirt-poor grandma who raised her with love rather than the uber-rich grandma she never knew. This idea that family is something you make, not just something you’re born into, isn’t necessarily revolutionary, but it is a stance that we don’t often explore in dramas, which are often much more about the power of the blood kinship.
Father Is Strange: Badass Unni is badass! I both want Hye-young to be my sister, and me to be Hye-young when I grow up. I’m so glad that Jung So-min got her chance to stand up for herself and demand that apology, and I’m glad that she did it on her own terms (even though Unni had a hand in ensuring that it happened). I also loved when Lee Joon took her side in the family debate, totally unprompted, just because he understood her position when the rest of her family didn’t. I can’t wait for these two to bond more.
The Liar and His Lover: There’s something special about this drama in the way these characters feel real to me—it’s not the acting, which is fine but not phenomenal, and it’s not the story itself. It’s more that the show as a whole, on a big-picture scale, feels tight and cohesive, and thus the story enables a kind of full immersion into this world. I feel like Lee Hyun-woo is a musical genius with father issues, and that he really did write all these songs on the show. I’m keeping an eye on this rookie writer, because I’m pleased and amazed that we’ve made it 14 episodes and I’ve never once gotten bored or lost interest, or felt that the plot was running out of steam. Even if it’s a remake, it takes skill to plan, pace, and build a story so that it’s always developing and avoids that near-inevitable late-game dip in energy. Storywise, I was moved by the way each character wanted to take responsibility for everyone else, and how it felt actually noble without being idiotic. But since they’re young and unskilled, they can only attempt to fix their problem with insufficient methods, and it’s poignant because they try anyway, driven by their loyalty and care for each other.

Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People: What a week to pre-empt the second episode!! The show sure did take its time getting here, but man, when everything came together in just the right way, I was on the edge of my seat and giving up all of my tears. Chae Soo-bin’s emotional roller coaster ride over the course of one episode was stunning, and I can’t believe she made me cry with a blindfold over her eyes. And don’t even get me started on the downtrodden people bursting into song to rally their hero and fight for their freedom. *whimper*
Whisper: I can’t help but think that if the heroine had been returned to her rightful place as a police detective about half a series ago, I could’ve been made to care more. I’m not even positive that it would’ve been the perfect fix, but I’m constantly watching this show and trying to figure out why it doesn’t grip my insides and twist them into knots the way this writer’s previous works did.
Mystery Queen: I was surprisingly moved by the case this week, which I credit to the actress who played the young single woman who’d just moved to the big city and hadn’t even gone on her first date. She was so warm and sweet, and despite being such a minor character, she’d managed to touch all of the characters’ lives in some way, making her death especially sad.
Man to Man: I really enjoy this current setup where Park Hae-jin is the smooth operator who needs to fool Kim Min-jung into thinking that he’s in love with her. It’s like a one-sided contract romance, but with guns! I appreciate that the plot moves so quickly in this show, because I think the writer is fully aware that it’s all just a delivery device for more Park Hae-jin hijinks, and I’m fully onboard with that. Plus, Oppa-as-Cupid is an unexpected but adorable turn.
The Liar and His Lover: I ran out of shows to watch this week because of all the pre-emptions, so I figured it was a good time to pick up The Liar and His Lover, since it seems to be a favorite among Beanies at the moment. I’m just a few episodes in, but it’s a nice breath of fresh air among all the darker shows I’m currently watching. The music is actually used to tell the story, and the hero is a likable prickly geeeenius, which is a rare species in dramaland. I’m less interested in Crude Play, but the heroine’s journey seems lovely and worth getting invested in.

Perfect Wife: Crazy lady wants heroine’s worthless husband. Worthless husband has no personality, wants, or desires. Crazy lady gets away with way too much over the course of one series. There, I’ve summarized the entire show.

Currently recapping: Whisper
Super Family 2017: I’m loving the spring fever and blossoming romances (Gwi-nam and Ms. Ahn! Mom and the cranky upstairs neighbor! Ik-hee and her complete unawareness that there’s a messy love quadrilateral brewing with her boyfriend, friend, and neighbor!). But I also deeply appreciate how comfortable and satisfying the relationship is between Chun-il and Ra-yeon.
Radiant Office: I may be a few episodes behind but I’m still sad that the show has ended. I’d like to say it’s just because of how much these characters have wormed their way into my heart and soul — I would do anything to make sure the Suicide Squad got their well-deserved happy ending. Buuuuuuuuut there’s also a little part of me that’s crying because now I will only get two episodes of my beloved Hoya a week instead of four. I’ve been spoiled for too long!
Chicago Typewriter: I was getting all set to drop this but now I’m here for the contract bromance and finding out more about what happened in the past (why can’t most of each episode be set in the ’30s?). I am also, once again, suffering from second-lead syndrome for a ghost. Yeah. No one ever warned me that dramaland would be filled with so many attractive and charming ghosts.
Tunnel: I’m finally caught up through Episode 10, and even though I love Yoon Hyun-min and am curious about how Kwang-ho will return to the past and make everything right again (or at least live happily ever after with his wife and daughter), I’m struggling to care about the main mystery. It’s not really drawing me in, especially since the viewers already know so much and it’s a matter of waiting until the characters finally figure it out. It’s not that I don’t dislike the drama, but I feel like Jae-yi — disassociated from the pain of our characters and only invested to see if it will end like the way I deduce that it will.

Radiant Office: I still haven’t seen the last two episodes, but that may be because the finality of the series hasn’t hit me yet, and I’m not ready to say goodbye! This isn’t a splashy show by any means, but that’s why it’s so great; the characters are real and relatable and their struggles are, too. Go Ah-sung and Lee Dong-hwi shine in their respective roles as underdogs in this underrated, small yet heartfelt show that always brings a smile to my face.
Whisper: Following the death of Young-joo’s dad, I thought I detected a switch flipped in Dong-joon, and I expected to see a bolder, more aggressive, and brazen lawyer… but Dong-joon is still the same ol’ Dong-joon. I get that he has a corporate job and therefore has to stay at the office for most of the day, but it’d be nice to see him venture out more and join Young-joo on her baddie butt-kicking adventures. Anyway, I’m loving the tiny glimmers of intimacy between the two leads. Dong-joon snagging some of Young-joo’s salad was super cute. But what could possibly be in a Subway salad that was worth taking? Hopefully, they’ll transition to fancier fare than foot-longs and leaves.

Currently recapping: Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People
Man to Man: I’ve only watched Park Sung-woong in serious roles, so I was completely unprepared for this version of him, but he’s comedy gold. He plays his character so well—finely treading the line where we can see the juxtaposition between the diva man-child, and the deeper inner Yeo Woon-kwang that we catch glimpses of when he’s contemplating his first love. Speaking of which, Chae Jung-ahn is fierce, although I may have liked her empty-headed bubble-brain act in Yong-pal a smidge better; she’s a similar character here except more grown-up. I’m half-expecting the kid to be Woon-kwang’s because we’re in dramaland, and that’s what tends to happens when “good” secondary characters get stuck in bad situations: They marry the villain. And I love me some makjang, so I won’t mind if the story ends up going in that direction. As for the main couple, honestly, I’m meh at this point, but hopefully things will pick up soon.

Currently recapping: The Liar and His Lover
Persevere, Gu Hae-ra: I had a lot of fun watching this, though I will admit that I was strictly in it for the sick music covers and not so much the characters. While I liked Team Persevere as a group, individually, they were hard to get attached to. And to make matters worse, the show tried to get me attached to a love triangle that I just wasn’t having. It lost its emotional pull far too soon (I’m still not over that terrible loss in Episode 2). At least the actors moved on to better projects after this? #brightside
Hwarang: I’d dropped this when it was still airing but figured I’d gotten too far not to finish it. I really loved the first half, but at a certain point, the story seemed to be spinning its wheels. The romance I liked wasn’t going anywhere and the bromance I loved wasn’t going anywhere, so there was almost nothing to look forward to except the charming side stories. Our main storylines did come back together for the finale, but instead of feeling satisfied, I just felt angry over the wasted potential. I’m crossing my fingers that Fight My Way is good, because my thirst for Park Seo-joon still demands to be quenched.

Currently recapping: Mystery Queen
Strong Woman Do Bong-soon: I got behind on this show, but I watched the last four episodes last week, more to complete it than because I wanted to find out what happened. This drama gave us some incredibly squee-inducing moments, but now that it’s over, my primary emotion about it is regret for its wasted potential. This could have been an amazing story about female empowerment and fighting for those who get left behind by the justice system—and all the elements were there in the beginning—but the awful writing took us on strange and unfunny tangents, with a lack of development in almost every plot and character storyline. Ahn Min-hyuk was the only truly fleshed out person in this story, which is a shame because this was supposed to be Bong-soon’s story, and that makes me sad despite how tooth-achingly sweet they were as a couple. In the last few episodes, the only emotional beat that worked for me was surprisingly Ji-soo’s conversation with Bong-soon about their missed timing, and his manly tears in the car afterwards (I definitely cried). Maybe one day this cast will be reunited in a better show, but for now I can’t forgive the excitement this one made me feel with its posters, and I just want them to move on to better things.
Father Is Strange: Lee Joon is simultaneously so pathetically adorable and so oblivious, I don’t know whether he deserves to be smacked or given a bear hug. I am loving him with the Byuns, in every combination. I’m also really glad Lee Yuri found out the truth and confronted both her sister and the bully with her knowledge. I wish Jung So-min had decided to tell her family the truth, but I am glad that she’s growing a spine and learning to stand up for herself. I only wish she and Lee Joon could go back to being buds—that was so cute!
Radiant Office: What will I do next week without this beautiful show? I can’t even express all the things I love about it, but I’ll list a few: the totally heartwarming, squad goals friendship between our suicide squad; the completely perfect friends-to-lovers romance between our OTP (Has Ha Suk-jin ever been this perfect? No. No he has not.); the life-affirming messages of the show that are uplifting without being sappy or unrealistic. I think what I loved most about this show was that it acknowledged that life is hard, sometimes brutally, desperately so, but there will still be good days along with the bad, and all we can do is hope for spring to last longer than winter, even if it’s a fool’s hope. I’ve thrown my lot in with these lovable fools.

Has anyone watched "What Happens to My Family"? I started watching it yesterday and I don't know if it's worth the effort or not!
And btw, this week is like "calm before the storm" because this coming week my k-drama schedule is messed up again. Haha

If you like family drama and don't mind the long episodes, it's definitely worth it. It has lovely and hearwarming relationships, likeable characters, and cute lovelines. And definitely nothing like the usual makjang weekender.

I started it straight after Do Bong Soon and been racing through it. First time I've watched such a long kdrama, but it's well worth it imo. Prepare tissues for the second half.

Yeah, I watched What Happens to My Family recently - only 'cause I wanted to see if Park Hyung--sik was any good in it even if it was a secondary role. It was a feel good story for me.

I'm not a fan of family dramas but Yoo Dong-geun is the reason why I watched it when it was airing.
He is one of the most charismatic sageuk actor that I've had the pleasure of following on television.
It's too bad that conventional sageuks is pretty much dead or we'd see more of him.

It's one of the best family drama I think. All the couples in that drama (except for the second child and his wife, I still don't understand them) are so adorable. Please do take your time in watching What Happens to My Family because it's quite long

What Happens With My Family is one of the best family drama for me. This drama make me cry and I always want to call my family right after watch this drama. I re-watch this drama everytime I miss my parents.

"What Happens to My Family" was the last weekend drama I've watched, and was a pretty good one if you like slow paced but heartwarming kind of family drama. I'd recommend you to keep watching.

It depends on your preference.
I watched it when it was still running back then and dropped it. I didn't find any likeable character. They all sounded so noisy and annoying for my taste.
But if you really like Park Hyungshik I think you may like the drama.

What Happens to My Family is one of my favorite weekend dramas! I like that it's different from the other weekend dramas. It's funny, it's heart warming, there aren't unreasonable mother in laws (except an annoying Aunt) and I loved the pairings. Interactions between the eldest sis and her boss is hilarious. Loved every bit of the drama.

If you can withstand the slower pace of family dramas, I say go for it! For me the main draw was the older sister's story but there's a lot of heartwarming moments and emotions. There is definitely some stuff I was frustrated with, but I wouldn't say it killed my enjoyment of the show. I give it a B+

I have never seen a family drama before, I started watching it strictly for PHS but overtime all the characters grew on me! It takes time, but I feel its worth sitting through.
Make sure you have tissues by second half!

I watched this mainly for Kim Hyun Joo's storyline but it's a pretty good family drama overall. There were a few annoying characters and moments in between but nothing unbearable.

Long-term it was a very good show. I know early on you're probably "What's up with this show?!?!" The ratings were high, it got a small extension on top of that, and got a LOT of awards at the end of the season. Definitely a good choice if you are ready for the about 50 episode commitment. If you want something more immediately cute and likeable, Five Kids is another winner.

I'm currently watching this show because of Park Hyungsik but I've come to love the story and their father. The show is so much feels for me on a personal level because I missed their father reminds me of mine. I hope you'll like it. :)

When I saw Joy on the display, I was so happy. And then DB surprises me yet again with @girlfriday picking up TLAHL! Glad that we will have more inputs from her on how this Show is. The CP guys will grow on her too, I'm sure.
@javabeans's inputs about this Show is spot on. The acting definitely aint phenomenal, but the writing is so tight and organic and each and every character so relatable that it has become one of my all time favourite musical drama. I'm sad that the next week is the finale week. !

And I agree with @dramaninja! I was also so happy when I saw Joy on the display, looking forward to @girlfriday's thoughts on TLAHL (and hoping she'll love it too), and @javabeans put into words in a very perfect way why I love this drama so much (and why the Beanies are crazy about it, I mean, 400+ comments per recap? ?). I even forgot that it's a remake, it's sooo good! I'm pretty sure nobody's ready for the last two episodes! I ain't ready for this parting~ ?

And me too, I'm not readyyyyy. I don't want it to end at all. It's been so good so far, I'm not sure what to replace it with.

Whoopsies! I only found out about dramabeans sometime last year ? and I wasn't actively checking out recaps then so I only have a comparison with the recent ones I see. And so far, TLAHL gets 400+ in less than 24hrs of posting ? man, I wish I was part of that Healer conversation! I love that drama so much! 11,152 comments ??????

I love both, but I think Cha Seung-won takes himself a little less seriously; he can go much further for comedy. I just wished I liked Jang Hyuk's projects more; nothing has been the same after Chuno... :-(

Greatest Love is one of my favourite dramas EVER and the only Hong Sisters drama I didn't watch with fast forward. I always watch it when I need a good, long laugh and Cha Seung-won is super in this role.

I love the man-child diva actor! I have heard that he usually does serious roles, but he is nailing this comedic role very well, and yet does the angst beautifully too.

Haha, the first time I saw him was as the rebellion leader in Gaksital - he made such an impression as a stoic-faced, strategic leader that I was legit struggling to laugh at him in M2M

Right?! I think I didn't expect this kind of humor that's why when presented with it in every episode, I find it so enjoyable. I laugh at the thought of PHJ rolling his eyes and his epic deadpans.

I'm surprised the writer never wrote any drama. I never felt any urge to ff any scene except for sometimes where I would skip CEO Yoon scenes with Han Gyul's dad because I can never understand both of them lol.

-Tunnel: All secrets finally laid bare and the emotional punch left me reeling and ugly-crying. What a great eps with nail-biting cliffhanger. A perfect way to torture us in the face of pre-emption.
-Chicago Typewriter: I'm excited that those 3 leads finally connecting with each other in present time. And the '30 scenes continue to be a pure delight.
-Super Family 2017: I love the natural progression of Hoya and Park Hee-bon's relationship. And his hilarious antics during blind date might be the higlight of my week. I still can't stop laughing remembering that.
-Crime Scene 3: 1st eps is great. Like what @girlfriday said last week, the cast are a tad too calm for murder suspects. But I think it fits the political setup perfectly. So far, great acting, chemistry, and deduction.

I just want to comments on Crime Scene for finally get to watch this after being loyal viewer from season 1. I feel so sad there's no Hong Jinho and Jang Dongmin in this season because somehow it feels dry without their clever twist of comedy. And both of them are actually genius too.

I miss them too. They can be very funny while still being smart, and I miss their frenemy antics. (And also Jin-ho's bad prononciation and constant flailing whenever people started to suspect him) Let's hope they come as a guest in the upcoming eps.

For me, it's really good. I love all the characters, and their conflicts felt much more real than what happened in the usual drama. Sitcom in Korea usually feels a lot like a mashup of family, school, and workplace drama in small portion. Try the first 4 eps or so to see if you like it.

TLAHL is the only drama I'm following now. Since I wasn't able to keep my mind off the drama, I figured it isn't fair towards other drama when I'm pitting them against Liar. Here's to hoping I'll pick up at least 2 new dramas next week after TLAHL ended.

How come the DB team is not watching "My Secret Romance"? It's great! Predictable storyline but the romantic moments and great chemistry between the two characters Yoo Mi (Secret's Song Ji Eun) and Jin Wook (Sung Hoon - Oh My Venus) makes it a wonderful viewing experience - well, at least for me. Hehe!

Lol...I agree with you. While watching it, I was thinking if the hero is so 'experienced' with woman and rich, what is there in heroine to attract him? She doesn't have a strong personality and keeps blaming her mother (and I think to myself sexual freedom - your mom can do whatever she wants). Why does her best friend love her? Again, she doesn't treat him or her own family very nice. Hero is no piece of cake either: arrogant, has obviously no friends, and broods to much instead of doing his job. I can't help but compare it with the director's other work '1% of anything', which had quite similar premise, but much more stronger characters. However, it's old style format bring some good memories of kdramas when they were just straightforward romances. I would watch it anyways (I fast forward usually) just to find out what will happen.

Hmmm... I think what makes the hero attracted with the heroine is because she is the only one who dare to leave him after the one night stand (obviously he thinks that he is the one who should do the 'leaving' part in any kind of relationship?? And also so far the only woman who doesn't want him.. I think at first she hurts his ego but then change to something else. The heroine's best friend might also falls in love with her because she has these images as pure, sweet and innocent girl.
Well these are my observations based on many years reading romance shoujo mangas and manhwas... LOL.

I'm so sad that radiant office has finished too. Looking back I'm not sure how I feel about the ending because I think it would have been better with 20 episodes to be honest. I do agree with the open ending because I think this show has always tried to show a more realistic view of the world which was why I loved it so much, but it would have been nice to see a little more of how things happened if that makes any sense at all lol.
I've also not finished Hwarang, I'm trying to finish my unfinished series this week and it's so hard lol. I debate with myself which ones to finish first and I'm delaying this one till the end, even though I've got like 3 episodes left to go. (I finished the legend of the blue sea and tomorrow with you so far)
I'm thinking of starting man to man after hearing such positive reviews and all those adorable screenshots. I've not actually watched anything with PHJ as the main lead so this may be the one to start with (couldn't bring myself to watch CITT haha)

I marathoned FIVE CHILDREN a while back just to have a light and heartwarming alternative to the darkness of VOICE, the angst of the sageuks (including MOON LOVERS and GOBLIN), and the wacky timelines in TOMORROW WITH YOU.
I'm 2/3 of the way through Taiwanese drama LOVE AT SEVENTEEN, and am enjoying it immensely. It was recommended in the recaps for OH HAE-YOUNG AGAIN (Thanks, Kim Yoonmi!), and I can see why. There are more than a few parallels with Park Do-kyung's hesitation to reciprocate Plain Hae-Young's attraction.
Which reminds me: I'm thrilled out of my shoes over Seo Hyun-jin's Baeksang for Best Actress in OHYA. Her acting grabbed my attention in THE KING'S DAUGHTER, SU BAEK-HYANG and turned me into a Kdrama fan.

In ep. 7, Kyutae's take on Joy's "Russian Roulette" dance moves reminded me of Ryu Deok-hwan's Madonna impersonation in LIKE A VIRGIN -- especially when he was giving one of the other ssireum wrestlers a crash course in Kpop dancing. The pair of them in perfect synchronization was amazing.

I just finished watching Taiwanese drama LOVE AT SEVENTEEN. Definitely a good watch. As with OH HAE-YOUNG AGAIN, some of the characters may drive you nuts. But if you can deal with flawed and very human characters who screw up when young and then go to great lengths to redeem themselves, you're in for a treat. In some ways the show also reminds me of DISCOVERY OF ROMANCE and ALONE IN LOVE, both of which are among my favorite Kdramas. The vibe is different from, and somehow more relaxed than, Kdramas, but I cannot put my finger on exactly how. Despite the plot twists, it isn't makjang, or even all that melodramatic.
The music is great. I especially love the outro (below). The intro is another earworm. And there are some lovely piano instrumentals.

A major theme is timing, and whether missed timing in life can ever be done over. The leading lady becomes cold and distrustful after being abandoned by her friends in high school. Thirteen years later, her path crosses with several classmates, including the guy who was smitten with her, but couldn't admit it to her back then. I like how the plot unfolds, and in particular how He Hao Yi finally tells Ai Li Si how he feels about her. He says what he did not have the courage to confess at 17 -- and then gives her lots of elbow room to respond on her own terms and in her own time. She is conflicted in part because she has post-operative amnesia. She has forgotten why she had a falling out with her erstwhile best gal pals from high school.
There is a conversation on the nature of friendship in episode 10 that is worth the price of admission. He Hao Yi listens to a recording of Ai Li Si as he eats breakfast alone [KissAsian subs]:
Ai Li Si: He Hao Yi, it seems we always have misunderstandings between us. This time, I think I misunderstood you again... I'm sorry. I misunderstood you as my best friend.
He Hao Yi: I don't want to be just your best friend.
Ai Li Si: I know you truly treat me as a friend. But as for the part of being good friends, it's my fault. After I lost my memory, you're the only friend accompanying me. Although I can't remember everything about you, I treat you just like [female friends] Lei Lei and Xiao Feng [his sister], as the most important friends of my life. But I found out that I was wrong. Because no matter how close we are, it can't be like them. Because you're a guy. The way that guys make friends is fundamentally different from girls. Girls stick together while doing anything. The Liar and His Lover is what I'm currently watching. This drama takes my whole week, from watching to waiting, to stalking other forums, reading recaps here on Thursday and Friday, commenting, reading comments again, refreshing for more comments. Next thing I know, it's Monday and Tuesday already.
I will be going on a trip to South Korea on the 17th, so I'm not sure if I'll get to watch the new dramas next week. They will probably have to wait when I come back. Same with Chicago Typewriter, since there are some good reviews now.

All I know is, about halfway through, I suddenly realized just how much I loved and needed more of them on my screen. And, well, after these recent episodes, they have my heart drowning in feels. Just reading about their self-sacrificing loyalty to each other from JB gets me worked up all over again. My heart just breaks for these boys.

Yes, oppa as Cupid in Man to Man is just too adorable for words.
The fact that it's such a silly, feel good watch as javabeans puts it, makes me feel so happy and fluffy when I watch it. I'm not one for hardcore action/spy plots, so this is perfect for me because I get to admire how cool the action scenes are and also laugh and how cute everyone in the show is.
It's a pity The Liar and His Lover is ending already, I've had such a good time discussing it here on Dramabeans. Shows with good writing are so hard to come by!
I'm currently also hooked onto My Secret Romance which continues to be 100% cliche and yet 100% fun to watch. I'll be looking out for Suspicious Partner and catching it when it starts airing!

That standard cliche that's so overused but forgiven all the time just because the male lead is hot, hah! I don't know, the cliches just make me cringe (not in a bad way) and clench my fists all the time, but I still wait impatiently for new episodes every week. It's just such an easy, brainless watch!

my secret romance is giving me such old skool kdrama vibes, like something out of the 90's-2k era, with all the wrist grabs, alpha male macho posturing, candy girl and nonsensical story lol.. somehow makes me happy that a lot of kdramas nowadays have moved on from those cliches

Liar is not just good writing in the technical sense tho, as in it doesn't only make sense, it has something a bit more special where the writing can also connect to the viewer on a personal level with loads of characters.

Radiant Office ended ??? This show had been my life for the past 2 months. My other dramas were great too but it's just that Radiant Office was the one which occupied a special place in my heart. I nodded my head, sighed, giggled, laughed and cried along with spunky Ho Won, the magnificent Trio and colleagues at Hauline.
@laica said it best when she wrote that the show was uplifting without being sappy or unrealistic.
I also agree wholeheartedly that Ha Suk Jin has never been this perfect. Woo Jin is a much better written character than Premium Trash in Drinking Solo. Although Woo Jin didn't have much skinship and hot kisses with Ho Won as Jae In did with Dada in 1% of Anything, he's a great colleague, boss, friend, boyfriend and person.
Ha Suk Jin may be an expert in playing cold, arrogant, short tempered characters but he's also amazingly good in making redeeming them and making them lovable.
This show is not just about the leads(GAS is awesome as always), it made me cared about the other characters. I never taken note of Lee Dong Hwi before but I can't forget him now.
I like how @lollypip said the open ending left her with the impression that life doesn't stop just because the show has ended. I found myself wishing that Radiant Office has a spin off into a series like Super Family 2017. I could watch both the married life of Ho Won-Woo Jin, Ji Na-Ki Taek and their office life at Hauline.

I want Woo-jin as my boss! Ha Suk-jin was great throughout and I love him as Woo-jin. I'm just so glad he had good hair and wasn't stuck in weird suits. Wouldn't mind a spin-off or season 2 either. I really liked Woo-jin's picnic date with Ho-won, was squeeing a bit when he took her for a bike ride!

Chicago Typewriter: Yoo Ah In's acting is good, Ko Gyung Pyo is cute and Lim Soo Jung's so pretty.
Man to Man: Park Hae Jin and Park Sung Woong's chemistry is seriously cute. It's a heart fluttering and fun drama.
Whisper: The drama development speed is so fast and... furious, hahaha
Mystery Queen: Choi Kang-hee is married, so no love-lines with Kwon Sang Woo, right? But... But the chemistry is surprisingly good and they're so fun together... I'm in dilemma~

- Crime Scene (Chinese ver) : started with low expectation, but it turned out to be so good. I fall for He Jiong instantly (>///<), and his pairing with Sa Bei Ning is off the chart. He Jiong being a criminal was a nightmare for the detective and Sa's analysis was really sharp. HA, now I know why Gui-Gui was called dog's detective xD
-Strong Woman Do Bong Soon : I know I'm late. But it's better than never :p I've just watched 2 episode and I enjoyed it so far. Park Bo Young being a mini Hercules is cute, and Park Hyung Sik is so so so handsome.

Surprisingly the humor in Man to Man isn't getting me at all. I am the brink of dropping it. Wish I hadn't expected this much from it. Chicago Typewriter's preemption made me think if it was because they hadn't completed shooting. I mean we didn't even get a preview for the next episode in the last one.
Moreover I have been thinking if Shin Dong Wook is still attached to Lookout? He is nowhere in the teasers or character descriptions.
Finished General and I, my first C drama. I hope I get to see better Cdramas that keep me hooked in their entire long run. Any recommendations?

I just took a look at AsianWiki, and Shin Dong-wook is listed in the cast as Lee Gwan-Woo. He's not playing a main character, so I suspect that's why he was not in the recent trailer. Which is fine by me. I'm just thrilled that he's able to return to acting. Much as I will miss REBEL when it concludes, I'll be consoled to see my favorite Soul Mate. ;-)

I feel like I sometimes don't understand what is good or bad writing. For example there are shows like DOTS which when I was watching had me so invested in it but then JB and GF pointed out a few things and I could see what they were saying ..but then there are shows that are supposedly brilliantly written but don't interest me at all..they lack a emotional connect ..and lastly there are shows like strong women which have polarized reviews some absolutely love it and some find everything wrong with it.. initially there were a few things that bugged me too like bong soon saying things like " how could that kidnapper do this to a woman" or something similar and i was like . .that kidnapper shouldn't be doing this to anyone girl or guy .... when a girl says that she wants equality but really means that treat me specially I don't like it ..so that bugs me but as the series progressed i realized a few things ...that even though it was fiction they can't put character s in good or bad boxs, bong soon was awesome but she was not the most nicest person ever...and gok Doo was obliviously chauvinistic....that doesn't make him bad .. it's just his honest thought process.. besides we don't watch dramas to see a utopian world ..... it's not equality as long as someone insists on being Superior .....

happens all the time. I actually sucker for The Heirs and Paradise ranch. Both are the dramas people say writing is worst and acting is meh for Paradise ranch. But i love them dearly and emotionally connected with them. But then there are Goblin and Do Bong Soon both went to good start to something strange and i was disconnected from them.

In the previous iteration of the dramabeans website, I think javabeans and girlfriday's drama ratings page was formatted with separate ratings for what they would rate it objectively and how much they enjoyed it. I think it is also perfectly normal to love a drama and still think the writing is meh/completely bonkers just as it's normal to see what is likely a well-written drama and go "nah. not for me". Isn't it the same for books? There are some classic literary masterpieces that I'm just not into or don't feel an inclination to pick up. And that's totally fine. I've read my fair share of classics and also my fair share of romance novels with the embarrassing covers.

For me, I don't care how good anyone says the writing is for any show or book, if I don't get emotionally vested in the story and characters, then it is not a show or book I will remember. So like what you like, and don't take what other people say seriously, after all dramas and movies are for entertainment first and foremost.

I do agree with @javabeans that strangely I'm really emotionally connected with the characters in CT except from the ghost. But because of the tone and the cinematography, together with so many other things I found beautiful, I'm still on board of this show.

Man to Man: I'm loving it so much and that's not only because of my love for Park Hae-jin (it does play the biggest part) but the drama is so, so fun! I can't get enough of Oppa's expressions!
Tunnel: trying to hang in there and wait (im)patiently for episode 13! Got my sister into watching it so I'm rewatching it with her!
Chicago Typewriter: fell behind again! Still haven't watched episodes 7&8 but I'll watch them before the new episodes come up, promise!

Currently watching:
Saimdang (almost done with the whole series) - I really like watching this. There are weeks that I don't feel like watching, but when I set time aside and watch, I just want to keep watching the next episode. I really feel sad for the couple - Saimdang and Lee Gyeom, but felt I understood her about her choosing to be a mother instead.
My Secret Romance - just binge watched all 6 episodes. Very cute and fluffy. Some parts though, I feel the boss is veering on sexual harassment especially if he is uglier and older, but he is getting away in the show simply because he is young and hot.
Whisper - Haven't finished all the episodes, but it was ok, though I think they are just ok. Not riveting, but watchable.
Man to Man - Just started watching 2 episodes. I hope this does not go the way of those shows that put all their budget in the first episodes to have action-packed scenes. I heard about people complaining about the 'ugly, annoying' female lead, but I think she just fits the role - crazed, obsessive fan who happens to be good at managing her idol. Will see how she is in the next episodes.
Chicago Typewriter - Caught up with it. Very invested in the storyline. Yoo Ah In is really good.

Glad to see all the love for TLAHL spill over here. This is such a great Show and has kept me occupied from watching any other drama. I'm infinitely glad that DB chose to recap this and @festerfaster and @sailorjumun did us the honours. How I would have survived without the recaps and active discussions here, for the entire week is beyond me.

Still in my drama slump, so I'm still watching variety shows now
Crime Scene season 3
The case is still thrilling, and the story behind the murder is still good, but I feel that lack of chemistry between the cast members. Or maybe I just don't think Eun-ji and Yang Se-hyung actually fits the detective/suspect role. Especially this week, when Se-hyung becomes the detective and I seriously doubt he even tried to deduct something. But maybe that's just me and I'm just being biased with cast of season 1 and 2 (bring me back Kong Jin ho and Jang Dong min! Oh, also Hani! T.T). Someone told me that season 2 start off very shaky too, so I hold onto hope that it will get better
Abnormal Summit (17 of 147)
I love love love the casts! All of them! And my favorite is Zhang Yuan because he's so adorable. Love that he's opening his heart to the other members now and he looks so comfortable. Too bad he is seated beside Julian now lol I think you will need to use that handkerchief often~
The Genius (currently in season 2, episode 6)
After the horrible 'death' of Lee Doo-hee, I'm not sure why I keep watching it. Even Jinho didn't look very comfortable being in there. Hope that it will get better. If Jinho gets eliminated, I'm going to go mad

Let's give some more time to Crime Scene 3 to find its chemistry. Season 2 also started off very shaky, but it turned out to be really good. Though I do think I'm spoiled by Dong-min being both very funny and intelligent.
The genius season 2 was controversial, to say the least. It's a pity since, personally, I think that season has the best game. You can always skip it, though, and watch the next season.

Still remember Dong Min as the first mate. Gosh, he's so funny there! It helps that Park Ji-yoon keeps getting the weird character ever since Park Kangnam incident, and Jinho keeps on getting a scandal in every case lol
Yeah I think I need to give it some more time to adapt to the new casts. I'm still loving the case so I really hope that it will get better later on
I heard a lot of negative comments about season 2 as well before watching it but I watch it with a positive mind. The first 4eps are good actually, but episode 6 is just... Well, to be fair Do-hee is also not a saint either. Agree that the games in season 2 are very good and that's one of the reason why I keep on watching it

Perfect Wife: Such an unusual drama. It feels a lot like a novel with the heroine moving to large mansion owned by an enigmatic, mysterious rich person, whose psychological state kept everyone on tenterhooks. Jae Bok is still one of the best heroines I've ever encountered. I love her crew of supporters. I'm even going to miss Eun Hee (and her beautiful clothes).
Radiant Office: Another drama with several great female characters that has ended! I loved the themes covered in this drama, but I think it veering off into Hyun's corporate takeover weakened the story and lead to an ending that was rushed. Ki Taek is still on my mind. I hope the writer will let us know if he will be cured.
Mystery Queen: I'm still enjoying the heck out of this series and it's my mid-week energy boost. I'm a little ambivalent about the latest murder. After watching TEN a few years ago, I feel like I'm over the "murderer wraps victim's head in duct tape" crime. But I do like how we got to know the victim. I like the pacing of the drama, but it is really off for a 16 episode drama, and I'm afraid the ending will be rushed and there will be a lot of loose ends.
Chicago Typewriter: Can Yoo Ah In just stay in his Hwiyoung persona forever? HY's loose-limbed aura is so attractive! I am glad we got Se Joo back to writing last weekend. Even though Se Joo doesn't write romance, he's so good at delivering those heart-thumping lines that only writers can come up with. While I'm invested in the story, I'm sort of curious as to what story really is.
Father is Strange: Laica nailed the description of Joong hee! lol! He's so adorable! I love the way he just seems to follow Mi Young around now. I also love how Mi Young took care of Yoo Joo in her own way. And Hyeyoung is the best big sister ever. She is just so cool!
Man to Man: Continued it since the genre is interesting, but something is not meshing for me. I know people have their favorites in Seol Woo, Do Ha, and Woon-Kwang, but I love Dong-Hyun.

This could have been an amazing story about female empowerment and fighting for those who get left behind by the justice system—and all the elements were there in the beginning—but the awful writing took us on strange and unfunny tangents, with a lack of development in almost every plot and character storyline." While watching it in prime time I just went with the writing and enjoyed it. Then there was nothing to watch so I rewatched it and was wondering why the kdrama writers dont do the entire script before they start shooting and while shooting make it even better together with hard work of all the bunch of the actors. It seems everybody had fun on set while filming and the writers didn't sleep for 2 months so they'd maybe forgotten whare they wanted to go with the story. They have to write episode after episode on a run, don't have time to make some revision, so pity! SWDBS had a beautiful potential but it got lost in a half way in cutiness. Nevermind it left a huge impression on me and sometimes I'll get back to it :-D

Watching... nothing at all this week; after I finished Do Bong-soon, I am having a hard time picking my next drama. These are busy weeks, so I need it to be good for de-stressing, and truly addictive, rather than just filler. Not asking much :-p .
So, I need advice. Out of the batch that are advanced enough for binging, or recently finished, which should I go for next?

I know The Liar and His Lover is a favourite, but I am doubtful about musical dramas (though I did like Entertainer, flaws and all), and I am worried that it will go into sappy-sentimental territory; I need fun rather than feels these days. (That may rule out Rebel, come to think of it...) So, any recommendations, pretty please?

CT is a slow burn. If you like your dramas a bit quirky and offbeat, then I'd say you can try, but it's heavier than say, Liar which is really just a breezy enjoyable watch. Have friends who really enjoy Tunnel, though it starts off slow, so again, may not be great if you want something immediately addictive.
Can't comment on the rest though, did not watch, sorry!

Well, I don't mean that I need it to be instantly addictive; I am used to giving dramas a five-episode leeway. But I'd like to know that it is going to be worth it... CT looked nice, and Yoo Ah-in is a reason all by himself, but perhaps heaviness isn't my current mood. I'll keep Tunnel in mind then, thanks! :-)

Funny, I just posted earlier about Liar being special for being light and breezy to watch, but also unexpectedly touching. It gives you the emotions, without tiring you with them. It's why you shouldn't ff when you watch it, because you'll miss all the small moments that slowly build up the emotions. Since it's light to watch, it doesn't give it to you in one punch, but bit by bit until before you realize it, it's a full mountain of emotions. Besides, there are no filler scenes to speak of. They all have a purpose you'll find out sooner or later.

Tunnel - not the greatest, but great great well done criminal drama
Whisper - thrilling, but with irrational behaviors
Chicago Typewriter - I'm biased, so all I'll say is - YES
Man to Man - unexpectedly funny, bromance, a bit wonky in execution
Rebel - great, stirring, also can be a bit off in pace or emotional connection, but when it's great, it's great
LAHL - starts cute and fresh, a bit musical-ish, evolves into a deep drama about friendships and loyalty that hit you at the feels
My secret romance - I cringed a bit, but it's very enjoyable in a "turn off your brain appreciate the hot fluff"

Thanks julane :-) . I am equally biased about Chicago Typewriter, so it seems a definite yes :-) . Man to Man is on Netflix here, so I feel less pressure; I can pick it up casually any time. The rest require work...
I did want to watch rebel after Six Flying Dragons, but I am chickening out a little now; sageuks are intense, and they like to kill everyone at the end; perhaps I'll read the ending first and decide :-p .
And Liar looks interesting; really don't know what to do :-))

I find Rebel has a lot of light and funny moments, as well as uplifting ones, to offset some of the more intense ones. It's not a historical - Hong Gil Dong was not a real person - so it can play around with its characters in ways SFD and other sageuks couldn't. I just love it. It did dip down for me for a few episodes but just to an average level, not a below average level. For me, Rebel and Jealousy Incarnate have been the gold standard this year in terms of quality writing, production and all in all good tv.

Perfect Wife is a lot of fun if a bit makjang. Very strong female characters and I found it a lot of fun. I like but don't love Tunnel. I'm more invested in the characters than the mystery. My Secret Romance would be only if you like every trope known to the k-drama romance genre.

Thanks @sorrynotsorry :-) I have been recommended perfect wife, although the problem with waiting for it to end, is you get spoiled along the way. I probably will watch it; I love the actor who plays the husband. As for My Secret Romance, I don't mind cliches if the rest of the story is good; I think we need to live with them at this stage... :-)

I'm really curious as to what you viewers of MSR think of Song Ji-eun's acting. I really wanted to like the drama since I've heard rave reviews about it here on DB but I really couldn't get into her acting. It's honestly a pity because it looks like a fun drama even with all the K-drama tropes and I like Song Ji-eun as a singer.

Now I know I'm biased because I'm really enjoying Liar and his Lover, but Javabean's write up on it was gosh darn as near perfect as can be. She said everything I wanted to, and more, better than I ever could. If writing could be swoon worthy... I'd marry her writing if I could!
Anyway, just happy that even though Liar isn't getting love in the ratings, at least it is here in Dramabeans. Which is the centre of the drama-recapping universe, no? ?

Is it strange that I'm actually enjoying weekend family shows a lot more than most of the week day shows out there? I say most, because there are a few exceptions. I absolutely adore The Liar and His Lover. It feels so real and normal, like they are everyday people that I might've known, and Tunnel still remains my absolute favorite drama of this period. The writing feels organic, although common tropes like serial killings and time travel are used; we also have seasoned actors who are playing their parts to perfection.

I wanted to punch both the main male characters and even though how come these 2 good female leads fell for these 2 idiots. a) its a rip off dharma and greg.. in terms of setup
b) season 1 itself is over rated
Unfortunately, indian set up has not produced good comedies after the golden era of dekh bhai dekh, zabaan sambhal ke and shriman shrimati
And the reason beats me... why slice of life kind of shows do not have the same punch.. be it the friends remake they did or many of the later shows (including the one remake of everyone loves raymond)

I enjoyed Sarabhai a lot. I heard it had average ratings. It is only a sensation among younger generation or Tech-savvy generation. And the major reason of it being praised is its content which is feels refreshing when compared to those c grade soap operas.

I'm not watching it, so I can't have a say on either view about the show. But I don't think that person was focused on the fact that you wrote anything about Liar, but how you wrote it. You have a strong way with words.
I also don't think they're asking for an apology but an elaboration?

I'm currently watching The Liar and His Lover and Chicago Typewriter -- unfortunately, I dropped Whisper which I just could not bring myself to watch anymore, regardless of how much I love Lee Bo Young and how I usually devour legal dramas. The plot, the actions, the characters just make my blood boil! Ugh! I'll try to follow the recaps and see if I can get back into it but as it is, its too frustrating for me to make an effort to watch.
P.S. I'm so happy to see JB still enjoying TLAHL. So sad about its ratings (at least its steady and not dropping drastically) but I'm happy its been getting a lot of love in DB and it looks like it will be aired in Japan this June too! So I guess that means the drama isn't a total loss especially since I spotted several PPLs written into scenes? And GF, welcome to the TLAHL club! So glad you gave it a chance! Enjoy!!!

Haha. Me too! Unlike with other dramas, I get happy when I spot PPL in TLAHL. I'm like "Oooh!! PPL!!!" rather than "Oh, not again."

I don't know if it's the way it's shot, but the PPL doesn't stand out and doesn't feel in your face visually, but rather, integrated into the screen and image. Like that scene where Chan Young and Han Gyul were talking, and Chan Young gave Han Gyul the coffee drink.

@sailorjumun on Persevere: I'm still not over that loss, and I watched it when the drama aired. :( While I enjoyed each of the characters (and all the awesome music!), I do dearly wish the "love" triangle had been about the three brothers instead.
This week for me:
Rebel: I knew it was coming and still my heart is shredded. This show is awesome -- one of those where I'm both desperate for the next episode and dreading it at the same time. And Chae Soo-bin is my new favorite. (I'm gonna go cry some more, now...)
Tunnel: noo why did it have to get pre-empted this week?? I legitimately don't even know what I want for the ending of this one -- wouldn't him going back and saving everyone in the past negate all the character development for the present-day people? But how can I not want him back with his Yeon-sookie?
Man to Man: is super fun if I don't try to take it seriously, so I'm not. I've only seen Park Hae-jin in YFAS and Bad Guys, and while I liked him in both of those, I'm totally falling for his charm here -- even when I know it's fake.
Chicago Typewriter: like others have said before, this show is weird. I wasn't terribly interested until Go Kyung Pyo showed up, but I adore his ghostly antics and feel more for him than anyone else in the show. I can't say I'm really invested in either of the main leads in the present time (though I haven't watched episode 8 yet, so maybe that'll change), least of all the female lead. I can't figure out who she actually is; it's like she flip flops randomly between different personalities and I can't find a connection to unite them. I absolutely agree that the 1930s parts should have been the main story: I'm actually interested in all three of those people. Basically, when it's a fantasy-mystery about writers and ghosts and freedom fighter's souls, I love it; when it tries to be a rom-com about a prickly genius and his crazy super/anti-fan, I lose my emotional connection to it.

I've been rewatching Secret Garden I've watched it 7 years ago, rewatching again felt like i am watching a new drama I enjoyed it a lot I didn't notice the beautiful OSTs the first time.
I loved how he fell for her first and was head overheels for her, and was following her around everywhere, it was funny when they swapped bodies specially when he went and met his mother as Ra Im and took the money then spend it all in one day, personally i think this is KES best drama.

Personally I find Tunnel the best show this year so far. Last year it was Signal in my opinion.

I miss your sageuk film recaps. Hoping that one of the upcoming sageuk films will get you excited enough to review it like "War of the Arrow."
I read the heck out of your "Conspiracy in the Court" recap till I almost memorize every word.
I'd ask for old sageuk reviews/recap like "Eight Days" etc but I'd probably the only one squeeing over it lol.
Waiting patiently for "Circle" and 10 episode is just perfect. Part of me wish that it's a sci-fi sageuk like "Joseon X-files" (so JB can recap it) because the two leading men can totally rock it and Gong Seung-yeon was good for a newbie in SFD.

Call me crazy but I think Liar Lover is a better drama than Dream High by far. The only thing Dream High has that's better than Liar Lover is Kim So Hyun (which gives it extra +++++ points, and that one song I can't get out of my head).

All these good reviews for TLHL make me want to give it a try. I've been staying away from 'popular' dramas because I don't want to get another disappointment like I experienced with other previous hyped shows ?
I currently caught up on Whisper, the one I care less and less every week. I just want to see how it manages the mess. I'm also following Chicago Typewriter and loving every bit of the characters' development. I was like JB few episodes ago when I couldn't emotionally connect with any character there to the point that I almost dropped it. However I am glad I didn't because everything gets better and more intriguing.

For Liar and Lover, it's not all great reviews. If you look at comment 40, you'll get a scathing review :)
If you're afraid of hyping yourself up, the solution is to not hype yourself up.
Let me help you: It will start with a bit of choppy editing, and depending on your taste, the occasional musical number might or might not be your thing.
Also do not expect to like all the characters (including the main ones) for the start. Nor should you set yourself up to hate any characters from the start. This is the charm of the drama, where characters are layered with backstories and forthstories that will allow you to evolve your view and affection for them.
If you go in with that mindset, I think you'll enjoy the experience as other Beanies seem to have.

I'll add that the young cast are all greenies, so if you adjust your expectations accordingly, you might even be pleasantly surprised by the acting. It's all a matter of managing your expectations and prejudices.

Great advice! If I can input in some of mine from my own experience, I'll say, at least in the beginning, try to consider the characters' age too. I find that it helped me change my view a lot (I was very prejudiced going in) to read the discussions in the recaps. They have me a different perspective on some of the characters and the commenters are all very insightful.

I'll second that. The comments really help understand characters you might not have liked. They're lots of comments but it's because of how much characterization there is to discuss. It's worth the read. And thanks for reminding me I need to go check out the latest recap. I usually wait until the comments slow down before I go in there. lol

All the characters are puppies. If you think of them as puppies it helps. Even Chanyoung. He's a wounded puppy who got hurt by others, and needs to learn how to trust again the "humans" who hurt him.

The great thing about this drama, is that all the side-characters that usually get zero character development in other dramas, ALL get their chance to shine if you wait for it. They ALL get the spotlight sooner or later. And we love most of them.

I agree with you on the mindset. If I could add my own earnest recommendation, I would say: Be patient and you'll be rewarded. Don't demand the characters to do what you want them to do, sit back and allow them to go on their journey, to make mistakes, and to stumble. They will eventually come up to measure, most likely beyond, and the journey will be all the more satisfying for it.
See their pain. If possible, strive to understand it. Try to put yourself in their mind and shoes (comments from people with different perspectives would help there as others have stated). If you can't, wait for them to explain themselves, because they will.
If it sounds like an exercise of empathy and sympathy, and can tell you the exercise will bear fruits in the best way possible. After all, isn't the best feeling on earth being able to feel connected to other people? Through this drama, you will feel connected to many wonderful characters who will feel, if you open your mind to it, just as complex and real as people.

Regarding "other previous hyped shows," I generally don't let the hype influence my opinion of the show. For instance, I didn't like Strong Woman Do Bong Soon, Goblin, or Moonlight Drawn By Clouds not because they were overhyped, but because they weren't very good shows (in my opinion). Goblin's hype was pretty tempered on Dramabeans likely due to recappers Javabeans and girlfriday not being too enthused by it, but I started out loving Moonlight Drawn By Clouds even rewatching the first six episodes, but my love sadly fizzled out.
To me, The Liar and His Lover is a very realistic drama since everybody lies. All the characters have flaws like real people, which makes their motivations understandable. I'm no longer a teenager, but I can put myself in their shoes and admit I would act the same way. The character growth in this show is extremely satisfying.
I am so behind on Whisper. I want to catch up before it finishes, but I'm never in the mood to watch it.
Unlike a lot of people, I was hooked on Chicago Typewriter from the start and was perplexed so many wanted to drop it. I was always emotionally invested in Se Joo's character because anything Yoo Ah In sells me, I'll buy it.

Tbvh, for some reasons, I rarely get the hype for some popular shows in here or other drama sites. (Except for WFKBJ, and...welp I can't remember the rest. Signal wasn't that hyped when it was airing, I guess, so it's excluded from the list). Maybe it's because I tend to get bored or distracted(?) easily whenever I follow any drama week by week or it is just me having weird taste? lol. I often like or even get obsessed over something that most people don't (the most recent example for this is TWY).
Well, YAI was the 1st reason I checked CT, and I really wanted to root for Han Se-joo from the start, but I just couldn't. It took a while for me until I finally found him likeable.

Oh I forgot about Reply series lol. I wasn't really active here when MND was airing, so I didn't know about it. Also I notice JI got more acknowledgment(?) at the end of the year. Well maybe I just interpret what's popular, and whatnot differently.
P.S, I don't add all my fav dramas on my list here. I only added some that I could remember from the top of my head, besides it'll take long time to work on that list) :)

Gosh. I was disconnected from Strong woman Do bong soon, Goblin and Moonlight drawn by clouds too, adding W-2 worlds to the list. All started good then, goblin focusing on Euntak being too childish, over done bromance between Goblin and Grim reaper, Do Bong Soon also started good, then too many characters, that dream about Romeo, romeo, gay manager etc all went in wrong directions, Moon light drawn by clouds also was very cute and then i got tired of Yoojung's green eunuch outfit kk. Then there is Lee Jong Suk and W-2 worlds. Story is fine and Lee Jong Suk is good as usual, just didnt feel chemistry between Jong Suk and Han Hyo Joo. I so wanted to love Goblin though.

still not feeling any of the current drama lineup.. i still watch man to man and my secret romance but not nearly enough to keep me waiting for them to air. surprisingly, i got hooked on 2 days 1 night season 3! randomly watched an episode with park boyoung in it and lol, who knows watching several ahjusshis taking a trip is this gut-bustingly funny. i like that they are just like real friends hanging out and none are obviously the "lead" MC. and i love how they troll the PD.. now i'm marathoning episodes like crazy, if this keeps up i might get a six-pack by next week! haha
btw, everytime jung joonyoung shows up on screen i keep seeing EXO's chanyeol lol, they look so similar it's crazy

actually i discovered k variety space last year.. and they have some super high quality shows..
I started with 1N2Ds3.. s1 is equally good. However the entire concept is sort of built on Family outing, another fun show. Watch genius if you haven't - that is platinum standard of all shows ever. Crime scene is also good (Not super awesome but good).
i m surprised how much i wait for the variety shows more than dramas now :)
PS: Is anyone watching youn's kitchen? got live feed last week.. hmm.. lee seo jin is one to the point, business minded manager.. i liked how he told the two women to buy something if they want to use the toilet :P .. the girl is quite boring..
however did not feel the usual awesomness of Na PD. Is the show any good?

I'm not feeling the current drama lineup either aside from Rebel. I did catch up to TLAHL this week because so many Beanies seemed to like it but for me it's just an average show that I could take or leave.
Maybe it's a good thing, because when kdramas aren't doing it for me I tend to experiment more with Chinese or Japanese dramas. I watched Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms, which was pretty good though incredibly long, and I'm currently watching Fighter of the Destiny, which is kind of cute.
