Suspicious Partner: Episodes 5-6

The comedy we were promised finally kicks in in a big way, with a nice mixture of sweet and suspenseful moments to create a satisfying balance. The show seems to be finding its footing now that the groundwork has been laid, giving today’s episodes a chance to focus on Bong-hee and Ji-wook and what makes them tick. Bong-hee in particular has some serious soul-searching to do, as she learns that even the most well-intended actions can have hurtful consequences.

EPISODE 5 RECAP

Bong-hee decides to visit Ji-wook at work, and on the way, she thinks about how love can start without you even realizing it. The sweet things Ji-wook has done for her, like the little smiles he’d give when he looked at her, all run through her mind as she narrates that she fell in love with him at first sight.

She intends to confess to him today, and she’s excited to run into him outside of his office building. When Ji-wook says that he thinks fate had a hand in their meeting, Bong-hee nearly bursts with happiness, but then he follows it up with, “It was an ill-fated encounter. So let’s never cross paths again.”

Bong-hee is stunned as Ji-wook walks past her, but then she catches up to give him a gift. She says it’s tea to help his insomnia, which she noticed while she was interning at his office. She breathlessly swears that she didn’t pry into his private life, and awkwardly says that he looks good for someone who doesn’t sleep (truer words…).

She realizes that she’s rambling, but Ji-wook tells her to speak now, since it’s the last time they’ll talk. Bong-hee apologizes for calling him a pervert when they met, and for costing him his job. She thanks him for being her hero, and he cracks a tiny smile when she says he’s better than Iron Man.

Bong-hee just barely stops herself from confessing, and Ji-wook looks a bit disappointed that she doesn’t have any more to say. She adds that she thinks she ran into Hee-joon’s murderer again but, worried that she’s bothering him, Bong-hee says that she’ll take care of this on her own.

But she has Ji-wook’s attention now, and he urges her to tell him what she knows. She mentions that the person outside her building was whistling when he passed her that night, and that she heard the whistling again the day her charges were dropped.

Ji-wook asks her about the song, so Bong-hee makes this off-key Whee whee, wheeeee whee noise, which Ji-wook hilariously copies, trying to place the tune. He wants to know what the person looked like, but Bong-hee just says that she won’t bother him with her problems anymore, so he needn’t worry.

As Ji-wook chokes down Bong-hee’s terrible insomnia tea that night, he grumbles that he wasn’t worried about her, not at all, he was just curious. Sure buddy, you keep telling yourself that.

Bong-hee wakes the next morning from a nightmare in which a whistling man chases her through the streets. She’s startled again by her doorbell, and her morning gets even worse when she opens the door to find Hee-joon’s father, District Attorney Jang, glaring daggers at her.

He comes in without an invitation and stalks around the living room, imagining his son’s murdered body lying on the floor. He finally looks at Bong-hee and asks how dare she eat, sleep, and breathe in the same place where his son died. Bong-hee offers him a deep bow and says that she’s heartbroken too, but she swears that she didn’t kill Hee-joon.

District Attorney Jang spits that he found nothing proving her innocence. Bong-hee counters, with all due respect, that there’s no evidence that she’s guilty, either. Growing angry, District Attorney Jang yells that if not for Ji-wook’s incompetence, she would be in prison right now.

Bong-hee reminds him that the evidence against her was fabricated. Her voice shaking, she says that it’s on the prosecution to prove her guilt, not on her to prove her innocence. Still, she adds, she plans to prove her innocence anyway and find the real killer.

District Attorney Jang raises a hand as if to strike Bong-hee, barely stopping himself in time. He growls that he didn’t know before how she bewitched Ji-wook into setting her free, but that he sees now that she’s not a normal girl. He vows to make her regret gaining her freedom and to punish her no matter what.

Ji-wook visits his father’s ashes to tell him that he couldn’t solve his last case as a prosecutor. He recalls that his dad once said it was an honor for a father to have a son follow in his footsteps, and he apologizes with tears in his eyes.

Soon after, Ji-wook starts his new job working for CEO Byun as a defense lawyer. He looks tragically unhappy about it, and even his bouncy arch-enemy Eun-hyuk’s exuberant confetti-and-happy-dance welcome can’t make Ji-wook smile. Eun-hyuk’s second try just earns him a grumpy, “Get lost.”

Lacking anyone else to talk to, Ji-wook tells Eun-hyuk about his ill-fated relationship with someone, and Eun-hyuk is happy to listen so long as Ji-wook isn’t talking about him (Ji-wook: “You’re the worst ever, I already hate you.” HAHA). Ji-wook’s problem is that he told that person never to speak to him again, but now he needs to ask them something.

Eun-hyuk agrees that it would be pathetic for Ji-wook to contact that person first, but he adds that if he were them, he would be excited to hear from Ji-wook after he said not to contact him. Eun-hyuk chirps that every time Ji-wook is mean to him before calling him for something, he gets butterflies in his stomach. Okay stop it, you’re too cute!

Ji-wook warns Eun-hyuk not to assume that he doesn’t hate him anymore just because he talks to him, but Eun-hyuk just gives him puppy-dog eyes. Ji-wook tells him to get lost again, and Eun-hyuk explains that he can’t because this is his office too. HA, poor Ji-wook.

Bong-hee is persona non grata at school — even her friends have been appropriated by Ji-hae, the girl Hee-joon was dating when he died. But she’s too busy to worry about it much, determined to listen to music until she finds the melody Hee-joon’s killer was whistling to her. She even puts up a huge sign letting the killer know she’s looking for him and inviting him to come find her.

She goes to look for clues at the spot where the killer dumped the murder weapon. She hears footsteps and sees someone walking towards her, but she can’t see their face with the sun in her eyes. Scared it’s Hee-joon’s killer, Bong-hee raises her fists in a fighting stance.

But then the man says her name. She sees that it’s just Ji-wook, and she collapses with relief. She yells at him for not saying who he was, and he yells at her for not asking, then a smile spreads over Bong-hee’s face as she asks if he was worried about her.

Ji-wook looks like a deer in the headlights for a second before he too-casually denies it. Bong-hee starts to stand and loses her balance, and Ji-wook reaches out to steady her. The moment their hands touch, they freeze, staring into each other’s eyes.

Ji-wook blinks and drops Bong-hee’s hand like a hot potato, then walks away without a word. Bong-hee gives herself three seconds to squee silently before trotting after him.

She asks why he came here, and he complains that losing his last case hurt his pride. Bong-hee offers to help him regain it by finding the true killer, but when Ji-wook offers to show her the CCTV footage of the courtroom so she can identify the killer, Bong-hee admits that she’s never seen his face.

Ji-wook is incredulous, and he asks her to at least describe the killer’s bike. Bong-hee nervously says it looks like all other bikes, and that’s when Ji-wook loses it. He laughs like a crazy person then explodes, screaming that he lost his job, his insomnia got worse, and he even swallowed his pride to see her again, all for nothing.

Bong-hee snaps back that he made her think he was worried about her, and Ji-wook deflates and says she’s right. Bong-hee is relieved because she thought he didn’t want to see her again, but he says she’s right about that, too.

Ji-wook explains that as her mentor, he did worry about her a lot, “But it ends here. I’m not worried anymore.” He asks her not to cause trouble before walking away. Bong-hee calls to him that she’ll find the killer then repay him for his help. Softly, she adds that she’s going to change their ill-fated relationship to a good one.

Two years pass, and Bong-hee leaves Ji-wook alone as he requested, though she sees him on the street sometimes. Her classmates are all scouted by prestigious law firms while Bong-hee has to become a public prosecutor, but when life gets hard, she watches Ji-wook and feels better. Occasionally he sees her too, but they never speak to one another.

Ji-wook struggles in his new job, forced to defend the very types of people he would previously have prosecuted. In a meeting with a spoiled brat bully and his overprotective entitled mother, Ji-wook slowly loses his cool, pointing out that this is the kid’s third violent offense and that soon, he won’t be a minor anymore.

The mother protests, but Ji-wook says that by protecting her son with her money, he never suffers any consequences. Working up a good rant, Ji-wook continues that he’ll just get into drugs and worse crimes, but he’ll always pay his way out and never know he’s doing wrong.

CEO Byun calls Ji-wook into his office to remind him that he can’t scream at his clients. Ji-wook just hangs his head and mutters under his breath, looking for all the world like a chastened puppy that got caught tinkling on the carpet.

He mopes over to his old office to see his friend Section Chief Bang, and he stops for a moment to fondly remember his time here. He peeks at Section Chief Bang through a crack in the door, beckoning him to come have lunch, then snarls when Section Chief Bang is too busy.

Ji-wook shuffles away pathetically, but eventually, Section Chief Bang joins him in the lunchroom. He asks about a team dinner Ji-wook attended two nights ago. We see it in flashback, featuring a drunk Ji-wook slurring about attorneys selling themselves out for money.

Section Chief Bang advises that Ji-wook try to fit in with the other attorneys, but Ji-wook blows his top and yells that he’s not cut out for defending criminals. He glares at Section Chief Bang when he quips that he learned about doing things you don’t want to do when he was only five.

Eun-hyuk joins them, throwing an arm around Ji-wook and saying that he’ll never change, but that’s his charm. Ji-wook agrees that he’s consistent, since he’s hated Eun-hyuk consistently for years, ha. He walks out, head hanging, and Eun-hyuk sighs that he’s just lonely.

Ji-wook doesn’t notice Bong-hee in the hall, and she doesn’t see him either. She does run right into Ji-hae, and the two trade barbs about how much they still hate each other. Ji-hae even sneers at Bong-hee’s clothes, but Bong-hee retorts smoothly that she’s so awesome, her clothes don’t matter.

They face each other in the courtroom, but in the middle of her arguments, Bong-hee sees Ji-wook in the audience and loses her train of thought.

EPISODE 6 RECAP

Bong-hee is so thrown off that she misspeaks, saying that her client is guilty. HAHA. She immediately corrects that she meant not guilty, and as soon as her case is over, she slinks out past Ji-wook.

Poor Ji-wook looks miserable as he presents his own case, and Bong-hee watches him through the window intently. Eun-hyuk recognizes her and mimics her awkward pose, scaring the life out of her when she finally sees him there.

When asked how she’s been, Bong-hee says she’s still alive because of him, and Eun-hyuk returns the sentiment with a glance at Ji-wook (meaning that because Ji-wook lost her case, Eun-hyuk gets to work with him). When he asks, Bong-hee denies that she was watching Ji-wook, so Eun-hyuk is all “Here he comes!” just to see Bong-hee run away, hee.

Having broken the heel off her shoe while fleeing from Ji-wook, Bong-hee admires some pretty new shoes in a store window while waiting for hers to be repaired. She gets a call to meet a new client in half an hour, but her shoe won’t be fixed by then. She sees Ji-hae sitting on a bench nearby, so she literally hijacks Ji-hae’s heels and takes off in them, pfft.

Until now, Bong-hee’s clients have been pretty abnormal, due to her reputation for having gotten away with murder herself. So she’s pleasantly surprised to meet her new client, SEUNG-HO (cameo by Ji Il-joo), who seems like a polite, soft-spoken young man.

He’s wearing casts on one arm and leg, and he says that he was accused of being a stalker. He tells Bong-hee that he fell in love at first sight with a woman named NA-EUN, and his story reminds Bong-hee of herself and Ji-wook. Seung-ho fell in love, but Na-eun hadn’t wanted to see him.

Seung-ho would hang around places where he knew he’d see Na-eun, until one day he was served with a restraining order. He didn’t see Na-eun for a year and a half, until the day they ended up on the same bus. It was a coincidence, but Na-eun assumed the worst and when Seung-ho tried to speak to her, she shoved him off the bus, which is how he was injured.

Na-eun just happens to have hired Ji-wook as her attorney, and she’s convinced that running into Seung-ho on the bus was no accident. Ji-wook sees how frightened she is and how she’s terrified that Seung-ho may have found out where she lives.

When they appear before the judge, both Ji-wook and Bong-hee are taken aback to see the other as their opponent. When she sits, Ji-wook reflexively grabs the back of her chair to keep it from sliding out from under her, though he tries his best not to make eye contact.

Bong-hee asks for compensation for Seung-ho’s injuries, but Ji-wook argues that the injuries happened while he was violating the restraining order, so Na-eun isn’t responsible. Bong-hee rebuts that Seung-ho respected the restraining order and that the bus meeting was a coincidence.

Finally looking at her, Ji-wook says that even if it was an accident, Seung-ho still tried to talk to Na-eun. Bong-hee counters that regardless, Na-eun physically injured Seung-ho, but Ji-wook argues that it was self-defense.

Bong-hee says that Seung-ho never physically harmed Na-eun, but Ji-wook quickly clarifies that stalking is emotional abuse. Losing steam, Bong-hee weakly protests that Seung-ho only watched Na-eun from a distance, then she realizes that Ji-wook is looking at her in a way that feels very personal.

He says that unwanted attention is a form of abuse, because when someone he doesn’t like follows him, even from a distance, he still feels fear and anxiety. He tells the judge that Na-eun lost her friends, her home, and even the job she loved in order to avoid her stalker, and Bong-hee feels a crushing guilt for having done basically the same thing to Ji-wook.

Bong-hee starts to repeat her argument, but with Ji-wook looking at her that way, she can’t continue. She says that she knows that he’s saying that she’s been stalking him. Luckily she’s only imagining it, and she comes back to reality to say that Seung-ho would be willing to settle in exchange for an apology.

Ji-wook says that Na-eun refuses to face her stalker and apologize, for fear that the stalking will resume. But Bong-hee insists that that won’t happen, because Seung-ho is moving out of the country.

They leave the courtroom, where Ji-wook awkwardly promises to contact Bong-hee after speaking to his client. They end up in the same elevator, both of them looking like they’d rather be anywhere else right now. Trying to ease their discomfort, Bong-hee says that it’s been a while since they’ve seen each other.

But Ji-wook says it hasn’t been that long, because he saw her in the courtroom the other day. Bong-hee asks why he’s speaking to her in jondae when he used to speak casually.

Ji-wook says that he was her mentor then, and it would be weird to speak banmal when they haven’t spoken in two years. Bong-hee says that it feels distant, and Ji-wook counters that they’re meant to be distant. Ouch, but he’s right.

Na-eun agrees to settle, so Bong-hee explains that once this is over, Seung-ho can’t ever contact Na-eun again. She jokes lightly that he did stalk her, and Seung-ho’s face goes scarily blank for just a second before that placid smile slides back into place. Uh-oh.

Ji-wook arrives with Na-eun, and they all sit to sign the settlement papers. Na-eun gets a call, and again something unnerving crosses Seung-ho’s face as he watches her. This time, Bong-hee definitely sees it.

Ji-wook and Bong-hee send their clients off in taxis, and Ji-wook almost looks as if he wants to talk to Bong-hee, but he leaves without approaching her. As soon as they’re out of sight, Seung-ho orders his driver to follow Na-eun’s car.

Bong-hee can’t get Seung-ho’s smile out of her mind, wondering how he can look happy when he’s never going to see the girl he loves again. Suddenly, she realizes that Na-eun’s ringtone sounded familiar, and she tries to call Seung-ho, but he doesn’t answer.

She calls Ji-wook for Na-eun’s address, planning to check on her. Ji-wook seems to be about to say that he can’t let her go alone, but he stops himself and says instead that he doesn’t trust her, so they go together.

On the way, Bong-hee explains that she sensed something was wrong about Seung-ho’s expression. She tells him that Seung-ho has the same ringtone as Na-eun, which he wouldn’t know if he really hadn’t seen her in over a year.

As they fear, Seung-ho follows Na-eun to her apartment building, and when she senses him behind her, she breaks into a run. She loses him in her building stairwell, but he hears her footsteps and breaks into a creepy grin, then follows her to her floor.

Ji-wook drops Bong-hee off at Na-eun’s building, but he warns her not to get involved. She promises, happily pointing out that he just spoke in banmal before running off.

Na-eun makes it into her apartment safely, but when she reaches for her phone, she discovers that she dropped it outside her door. When she peeks out to grab it, she finds herself face-to-face with Seung-ho, smiling that blank, terrifying smile.

Seung-ho pushes his way into Na-eun’s apartment only to get a face-full of pepper spray. Na-eun locks herself in her bedroom, so Seung-ho pounds on the door, growing angrier and angrier. He picks up a baseball bat, but before he can do any damage, Bong-hee enters the apartment.

Seung-ho turns on Bong-hee, screaming at her to leave them alone as he swings the bat wildly. She looks like she’s preparing to go at him armed only with a high heel, but Ji-wook rushes in and pushes Bong-hee aside.

Seung-ho takes a violent swing at him, and in a split second Ji-wook ducks under the bat, grabs Seung-ho, and neatly flips him to the ground. Bong-hee stares at Ji-wook, her savior yet again, as he says blandly that an attorney shouldn’t beat up her own client. HA.

Seung-ho is arrested, and Ji-wook finds Bong-hee sitting barefoot in the building courtyard. He returns her shoes as she says that it never occurred to her that Seung-ho was anything but normal.

Seeming more comfortable than he has in a while, Ji-wook sits with Bong-hee and says that because of her, they were able to stop something bad from happening. Bong-hee happily crows that Ji-wook is still speaking banmal, which he denies, heh.

At the station later, Bong-hee thinks that loving someone who doesn’t love you back is like torture. But now she also knows that being loved by someone you don’t care for can be worse. She wonders where love ends and obsession begins, and whether she’s crossed that line.

Ji-wook gives Bong-hee a ride to her office, and on the way, she decides to give herself a restraining order. She tells Ji-wook not to worry, that she’ll stay away from him unless it’s unavoidable because of work, and she promises that she doesn’t like him even though it may have looked that way.

She says all this at top speed then runs off, missing Ji-wook’s confused expression and his attempt to talk to her. She makes it out of sight just as she starts to tear up, then she lies down on her office couch for a good cry.

She goes to her desk for some tissue and notices a box sitting there. Inside is the pair of shoes she was admiring, with a note pasted into the inside of the box top: If you keep looking for me, I’ll find you first. Bong-hee realizes that Hee-joon’s killer must have seen her sign inviting him to find her, and that he’s been watching her.

COMMENTS

I’m happy to see Suspicious Partner finally living up to its rom-com promises, and although the humor was a bit slapstick for my tastes at some points, for the most part I was laughing like a loon. I credit fully half of that to Ji Chang-wook’s facial expressions, because we knew the boy could smolder, and we knew he could pull off tragically heroic, but who knew that he also has the cutest pouty-face on the planet? And the humorous and serious scenes feel complementary rather than clashing with each other, which is always a good sign. I love it when a single scene can move from scary, to funny, to thoughtful, then back to funny, and it all feels natural and seamless. It takes a careful balance of writing and performance to pull that off, and so far the show is managing it very well.

I almost hope that Ji-wook never forgives Eun-hyuk for whatever he did to make him hate him so badly, because their unbalanced relationship is so funny and adorable, I don’t want it to change any time soon. Eun-hyuk is so undaunted by Ji-wook’s hostility and is just bubbling over with love for Ji-wook without any sense of shame. Ji-wook doesn’t even seem to have much energy for hating Eun-hyuk these days and seems to be mostly rejecting Eun-hyuk out of habit, but it’s interesting that he still goes to Eun-hyuk for help and advice. I have a feeling they used to be extremely close, which is probably why Eun-hyuk’s mysterious betrayal hurt Ji-wook so badly. You don’t carry a grudge that big, and for that long, unless you really, really loved that person before they hurt you.

I very much enjoyed the way the stalking case gave Bong-hee a wake-up call on her own behavior. What she did by seeking out Ji-wook whenever she felt like seeing him was pretty much the same thing her client did to the object of his affections. Maybe her intentions were harmless, but she never understood that her intentions didn’t matter. It’s not whether a stalker has done something to harm his/her target that is the problem, but the fact that they don’t respect the other person’s wishes to be left alone. Bong-hee was able to justify her actions by telling herself that she wasn’t violating Ji-wook’s request to be left alone because she never actually spoke to him, but the reality is that she disregarded his wishes, placing her own wants above his. I’m glad that she finally realized that she was being selfish and disrespectful of Ji-wook’s request.

I’m happy that Ji-wook finally got a chance to tell Bong-hee (indirectly) that her following him was stalking, and that she heard him and took it to heart. But I also hope that they find a way to talk it out soon, because I do think that Ji-wook knows that it was never Bong-hee’s intent to hurt him or to make him feel uncomfortable. I believe that he has feelings for Bong-hee, but that his irrational blaming of her for ruining his life is warring with those feelings and causing him a lot of conflicted emotions. The way he looks at Bong-hee just kills me, since it’s equal parts wariness and longing, and it’s obvious that he cares for her a lot more than he wants to admit.

I’m willing to bet that Ji-wook knows perfectly well that it’s not Bong-hee’s fault that he lost his job, but that he’s not ready yet to own the fact that he helped cause his own downfall. His insistence that the ends justified the means, and his belief that it’s okay to overlook pesky little things like evidence so long as the criminal goes to jail, are a big reason why he ended up where he is now. I think that’s why he looks at Bong-hee so sadly, because he does know that he’s blaming Bong-hee unfairly but he doesn’t know what else to do. Pretty soon, Ji-wook’s feelings for Bong-hee are going to become too loud to ignore, and then he’s going to have some serious apologizing to do. Maybe they can both apologize for the wrongs they’ve done to one another, then kiss and make up. Soon, I hope.

This episode did a better job at blending the thriller with the comedy, although I could’ve done with more comedy. I guess I’ll have to be satisfied with puppy Eunhyuk welcoming Jiwook and copying Bonghee. (Also that scene where he takes a sip of bitter coffee, complains about Bonghee, takes another sip and says the coffee is still bitter).

I had thought it odd when Bonghee had walked up to Jiwook with a smile at the end of the previous episode, but it makes sense that she was smiling because she was excited to confess her feelings to Jiwook.

Watching this episode really made me want BH and Jihae to become reluctant best friends or at least partner up.

I know there’ve been some complaints about the editing, but the way they transitioned the seasons to showcase time passing was so beautiful. I guess we’re in the present now after 2 years have passed from Heejoon’s murder. (I don’t get why BH and JW went to look for more evidence after 2 years, and why HJ’s dad came to visit BH only after 2 years, but whatever. I know I have to suspend logic for dramas). Also, I was not okay with how the DA barged into BH’s house, and was definitely not okay with him raising his hand to BH, even if he didn’t follow through.

I love that JW still managed to retain his cute and supportive relationship with Section Chief Bang. It was obvious that SC Bang was concerned about JW when EH mentioned he was worried about JW touching the walls for human interaction. It worried me because he has looked so depressed for the 2 years that he’s been a lawyer - I know most of what he is defending goes against his principles, and that is sure to depress someone - so I was so satisfied to hear JW’s tirade about rich kids getting with crime (I cheered so loud, mentally).

I’ve wondered about his family life after his father passed away. He was quite young, and it’s possible that his mother also died at a young age. CEO Byun seems to hold some sort of close relationship, almost like a father figure to JW. But what was his life like after his father passed away (and maybe before Eunhyuk came into his life)? He does seem to be quite rigid and unbending and sees many things as black and white. His social skills are not the greatest – it’s almost like he never learned social graces like a ‘normal’ child. Was he abused sometime in his life that made him clam up so much?

Was he drinking that tea she gave him to cure insomnia? I also loved how he complained that it was bitter and yet continued to drink it.

I do have some complaints about the editing, but I've to agree with you that I loved how they did the seasons changing! I have no idea why HJ's dad would only show up after TWO years to raise a hand at her and threaten her, but like you said, we shall suspend all logic just for dramas! I don't like that old man, but he seems the typical rich, corrupt old man anyway.

JW's sort of socially awkward character almost reminds me of Bongsook in Healer, hee. But I wonder if it's because he's just slightly socially awkward and very engrossed in his own beliefs.

The search for more clues, and the visit from Hee-joon's father, both happened before the two-year time skip :)

Eeks! Just re-read the recap and realized that too! I don't know why I thought that quite a bit of time had passed when HJ's father came to look for her. I'd thought that the 2 years time skip was an even greater time lapse after that. Thanks for clarifying!! (:

I think the previous time jump was a misunderstanding. I believe it's just been two years since the subway meeting and trial.

1

@crysta Yes! Even I was confused because the previous time-skip had happened (or so we thought) between her arrest and the hearing where JW ruined his career.. I was so confused that they kept her in jail for 2 years without a single trial!! This clears it up..

You're right it was the tea to cure insomnia, not coffee. I made so many mistakes in this post.

If I am not wrong, I believe the chief prosecutor 's visit to BH came first before the 2 year jump..

I thought the Didtrict Attorney visited after she was released not two years later. Ditto with the searching for evidence scenes.

I don't know. I am not feeling the thriller aspect that is blended with the comedy of the show. I prefer if the show just sticks to one genre of the show, namely comedy.

I'm not feeling the thriller aspect either, but it's not bothering me much at this point because I think there will be a lot of room for it in future episodes if they do it right. What I think this episode did quite well was to mix a wide range of at times disparate elements which just happened to work somehow. A good example would be Eun Hyuk's stalking. One may have thought it was cute, especially given how it was framed. However, when we hear Ji Wook's take on it, we learn that for however cute it seemed, it wasn't cool. The comedy helps keep things from being too solemn whilst still trying to address serious issues. But, it's early days, and this analysis could be crap when all is said and done--or now. lol.

I honestly like the blend here than in Strong Woman Do B Bong-soon. In SWDBS, it felt like three or maybe even four storylines being mashed together in the most frustrating way. But here, it feels like the comedic aspect also benefits the main story. Like both thrilling, comedic, and romantic elements revolve around the central plot.

The only editing blip this episode for me was the show not making her imagination scene in courtroom clear enough. They did it perfectly when she kicked her ex.

Yesss!! I was wondering how unprofessional and embarassing of her to blurt it out in the courtroom and after a few moments only realized it must have been her imagination!

For that reason, I'm not convinced that he know Bong-hee was stalking him. I don't think his comments were really pointed towards her. She just imagined it as she imagined talking back to him about it.

Yeah..while I like the first week, but with these second week episodes, I am all ready to REALLLY like this show! I think JCW And NJH have great chemistry and its really funny how they switch from funny to sad to swoon worthy moments so rapidly. I like the suspence element but its really not that important to me....in fact I sometimes feel that for the show itself its not that important...absolutely loved the idea of showing the seasons changing..oh also for a second I thought that the psycho was killer...but then I realised its just me wanting to see ONLY JCW and NJH being lovey dovey quickly and without any obstacles:P Finally, what was that obsession fear...I mean that mini plot disappeared in what...2 seconds?

Usually I would feel the same, kinda of like a 1% of Anything (2016) Drama, but I tell myself that the other relationships here might be really well worth it for character development and exposition eg. Ji Wook and Eun-hyuk.

I'm not sure if it's just me, but the editing leaves me confused sometimes. Like when she "confessed to him in court about stalking him", I was left wondering whether it had really happened. (It didn't, right? It was in her head?).

Otherwise, I did find myself laughing at the comedic scenes this episode, so all's good for me. It's not "crack drama" level for me yet, but so far there's a ton of comedic gold, and I like it.

On Eun Hyuk: I'm beginning to wish we had more scenes of him that told us a backstory. I'm anxious to know! Not that I'm complaining, because I'm happy with scenes of JW and BH who are hilarious together, but I wouldn't mind more EH. Him doing that squiggly dance, and doing the same pose as BH outside the door? Hi-la-rious. Despite how he acts all chummy with JW, I can sense the undercurrent of tension - he knows he shouldn't be just because JW pretends nothing had happened between them, but he pushes ahead anyway because he's trying to repair their relationship. I guess this cements the suspicion that EH had been the cheater.

On Ji Wook: I just... like him. I don't know. Even though he was pissed off and feeling dejected, he still bothered to listen to her ramble, and even when he said he wasn't going to worry anymore (is worry a switch that you can turn on and off, JW? LOL.), he still reminded her to live safely. Plus making sure her chair didn't roll away? He just strikes me as such a nice guy - why do I feel like I rarely see such characters in Dramaland?

PS. I love how he totally got schooled by his former colleague "I learnt at 5/6 that sometimes I have to do things I don't want to do." Hah!

On Bong Hee: Actually, I loved her pink suit and pumps. I couldn't imagine wearing it myself/anybody in my country wearing it, but she kinda rocked it. I thought it was hilarious that she just went ahead to steal JH's shoes. And telling JW that she doesn't like him AT ALL when he wasn't even thinking of it? Girl, in dramaland, that's a straight out confession, LOL. She's actually cheery and strong without being too overly optimistic (which can be annoying in a lot of female leads), and she's growing on me.

Side note though - I rarely watch "legal" dramas, but is there anything iffy at all about the way she puts her own foot in her mouth in court, like claiming her client was guilty? Because it's comedy I don't bother getting "offended", but is there anyone who thinks it's vaguely iffy?

I too was confused about whether or not the courtroom stalking confession was a daydream or reality.

4

Required fields are marked *

The whole foot in her mouth in court: It would definitely mess up or ruin her reputation in a normal situation, but I think her reputation is already messed up enough with being a person once accused of murder that a slip like that can't really make it any worse...

5
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

Yes, that is a very good point, LOL. I'm sure she can't mess up her reputation more than it already is. Maybe it's because all the dramas with law involved that I've watched have been more on the serious side, this is the first time I've watched a rom-com with lawyers as the main characters, so I'm not used to seeing such comedic scenes in a courtroom, haha!

I think the same @YY ! That she was just being over-sensitive because deep down she knew what she was doing was not right (stalking)! But I have to admit that it is this kind of thing that makes her grow on me in the way that I can easily relate to her! I find her character quite realistic!

3

Required fields are marked *

She was indeed over-sensitive and thinking it was directed to her because deep down she knew she was stalking him...I bet Wook has no idea whatsoever about that,he gives sometimes the idea he is kinda dense in the departament or he pretends very well, wecan't say he is the best in interacting with others...

Also NJH looks soo beautiful, the stylist did an amazing job!

It really has its funny moments. Like the one where bong hee was humming whee whee whee which was funny in itself. But then, ji wook asked her to repeat it again and she was like "again?!" , lol.

I really hope that the breach between eun hyuk and ji wook is not because of ji wook's ex girlfriend. Because, I would find it very hard to forgive him then. Also, since it is something easily predictable, I would like it if the writer suprised us all.

I feel the same way about whatever incident made JW hate EH...The obvious conclusion would be something regarding JW's ex, but I'm really hoping they don't go that route because I really like EH and that dimension would make his character reaaaally unlikeable and his present-day actions would be so insensitive.

Same. I said this before somewhere else, but I think it has to be some kind of misunderstanding. Something that Ji Wook being the serious person that he is would take very seriously, but EH being the goofball that he is would have tried to clear up and being rebuffed would just keep trying. Maybe he knew the girlfriend was cheating but didn't tell JW? Something like that because I agree if he was the one who cheated with his girlfriend, I would find it hard to forgive him for that whether he was drunk or not.

Nah, I don't think she actually said all those things about stalking him out loud. At least, it didnt seem that way to me since I didn't see her lips moving when she talked. It also seemed like she jumped back to reality when the judge snapped at her.
Also, I cautiously like Eun-hyuk but Choi Tae-joon's role from Missing Nine still makes me a little scared. I love how committed to the blatant crazy of Eun-hyuk's character the actor seems to be. He and Ji Chang-wook are in a real life bromance and it's the cutest thing. I almost don't want Nara's character to show up.

Not only do I not think she said those things to him out loud, I don't think HE said them to HER.

From the recap: "I’m happy that Ji-wook finally got a chance to tell Bong-hee (indirectly) that her following him was stalking, and that she heard him and took it to heart."

I actually don't believe this happened at all. Ji Wook seems depressed, like OBLIVIOUS-depressed, I don't think he's got any idea that once every few months Bong Hee passes him on the street. In fact the entire "Bong Hee is a stalker" thing was valuable because it made her reevaluate what she was doing and how she felt about it, but I don't get the impression he even knows she's keeping tabs on him. And I'm also not sure that you can be a stalker if the other person doesn't A) know about you and B) not want your presence. That seems like a too-firm line to me, especially when Bong Hee and Ji Wook are in a small world and their path-crossing seems to be rare. It's not like she's peeking into his hedges, she just walks by his work when she's wondering about him.

It's not that different from the interns at work knowing what shift the Hot Guy has at Starbucks and aligning their breaks accordingly. If the Hot Guy noticed and didn't like it, it's a problem. But otherwise? They're just coordinating schedules.

I agree that Ji Wook probably has no idea she has been stalking him. But I absolutely loved that the show took stalking seriously. Too often in dramas, I-love-you-and-will-pursue-you-until-you-love-me-back is shown in a romantic light. It's not. It's uncomfortable at best and scary at worst. And Bong Hee recognized that, decided to respect Ji Wook's boundaries, and I love her for that. Even if he never realized she was being a creeper.

5

Required fields are marked *

You can definitely be a stalker even if someone doesn't know about you. I mean the whole point of stalking is that the other person doesn't know. The only difference is that the other person is not having the same trauma about it since that person doesn't know, but it still is morally wrong...
But, I do agree that I don't think he actually realized that she was stalking him. I think it was just weighing on her conscience and the courtroom scene was the push for her to really evaluate what she was doing.

The actors are doing a terrific job. The writing is great ("have you really fallen for me? Wait, no, obviously not, sorry") but the delivery is selling them as very quirky, unique people. I especially like Bong Hee - she's unabashedly straightforward, but not obnoxious. I like that there are situations where you might expect her to be embarrassed but she just steps right up and owns whatever it is.

And poor Ji Wook looks like an ad for depression medication. Can you imagine, his girlfriend cheats on him with his best friend and then he has to trash his prosecuting career because a powerful DA fabricated evidence? No wonder he's depressed! Every fiber of his being is just SAD, but it's also obvious that Bong Hee is like a light in the darkness for him. He doesn't quite know what it is about her, but he's not going to be able to stay away because she sparks his interest.

1

"To me, it was more of a... because it's been 2 years, it wouldn't be a very strong feeling?"

- I actually felt like the writer did a good job of showing that this should have been the case by having him acknowledge it himself lol. He even tried so hard to speak formally to her because their relationship should be distant now but he failed.

Sometimes all it takes is being around someone again to strike up the relationship you always had. They may not have known each other for long, but they played huge roles in the course of each other's lives. So I think his feelings are in just the right place. This is a girl that he gave up his job for so I think it makes sense that he'd have a special place in his heart for the person he was willing to do that for, even if his resentment prevents him from acknowledging it. I also think that right now his feelings are only really at the level of begrudging care.

Plus there was their "shared" night in Ep 1.

I forgot about that. Yes, definitely a factor. The one night issue is going to resurface, I think, with ET. I think he got drunk and slept with JW's girlfriend. I can't believe he would intentionally hurt JW. He adores him to pieces. Coz I notice this show has a way of repeating the themes of the show, like the stalker issue this episode was a reflection of BH's own behaviour.

6

I'm not sure if he has romantic feelings for her, but he does seem to care about her and relate to her. There is no way he hasn't thought about Bong Hee. Her case was the very reason why he is suffering every day as an attorney instead of being a prosecutor. I feel like there will be a future flashback showing that he was looking to walk down the street across from her - just like she was doing those 2 years.

I was thinking about this too. I wonder if his plan was to just discredit the witnesses. I mean it would have been odd for him to mistake Bong-hee's ex for Bong-hee to begin with, but what if he just wanted to discredit the witnesses that saw his original murder? Who is going to believe a sleazy guy convicted of groping people and a person once accused of murder? Maybe that's giving too much credit to the writer and we are suppose to believe that the killer thought it was Bong-hee he killed, but I think there's a larger game being played.

4
3

Required fields are marked *

Ooh that's be pretty nefarious, but you're right, it's probably giving the write too much credit to think that way.

1

The murderer saw her that night across the block at the window. He murdered the ex, knowing full well it's a guy. He let her go even though he rode past her, but he whistled to send her a message, like his calling card. It doesn't matter to him whether she's found guilty or not: if guilty, she'll go to prison, if not, she'll be released, and he'll finish her off before she finds new evidence to convict him. He turns up in court and taunts her with the whistling. She is let off, and starts a new life. But he's still out there, watching her, stalking her, sending her a gift to scare her even more. I think he's playing with her, he's answering her dare, "I'll get you before you get me. I'll get you when I'm good and ready. In the meantime I'll play with you." He wants to have some fun before killing her.

8

@yyishere that's a good point. He probably killed the ex to be a warning for her except she doesn't know why she needed a warning to begin with...

3

The murderer is obsessed with BH. That's why he's stalking her.

What if it wasn't her ex-boyfriend's date who sent the text? I'm thinking it could've been someone else who also wanted them to break up. E.g: that other guy that wanted to date BH(the one who re-enacted her "killing song" in court).

But I'm also wondering if that could be related to the murder. Could BH's colleague be the amnesic killer?
We know the killer originally went after BH, because he thought she saw him disposing of the body in that water tank. But why did he end up killing her ex? The killer wasn't even in the room, so it's not like he was worried that her ex saw him.
Which leads me to think that BH's colleague could be the killer, because: (1) Then he has a motive to kill the ex-bf, because he has some sort of feelings for BH and didn't want them to get back together, (2) would explain why the killer hasn't actually tried to kill BH even after 2 years, hesitating bc of his feelings? (3) that time in court when he gave a false testimony to incriminate BH doesn't seem so funny anymore.

Well, this is all far-fetched. But at least it got me thinking. This is why I love mystery-thrillers.

5
1

Required fields are marked *

Or maybe, the murderer started liking her the night he saw her at the window. Maybe he had no intention of killing her. He stalked her quietly, prowled around her apartment unknown to her. Maybe one of those nights, he saw the ex come, the night of the blackout. He became very furious and jealous, followed him in and murdered him.

1

Maybe he finally noticed the banner she had put up? Or overheard her telling Ji Wook that she was still looking into the case.

Frankly, I don't know what is the beef with the murdered man's dad. I know his son is dead, but planting false evidence and threatening BH about his son's death.. not cool, man. Required fields are marked *

Assuming you know the answer can be more reassuring than not knowing anything. It is like families who have had a family member go missing. They of course want to find the person alive, but also finding the body is some kind of closure. Maybe, the father needs that conviction that he knows who the killer is to be able to live his life even though he's wrong. Having a target can ease his pain. Of course that is still not connected to why anyone would want the case to be fabricated in the first place. I'm assuming that would be explained later though it would make for a smoother viewing experience if we were to get the motivation now.

Anyway, I really love the time lapse here, it was nicely edited, and proved the mature in BH's love to JW. We can see her longing to him. I'm not sure if this is considered as "stalking" or not... Just that, if I am her, I would do the same, checking the crush from afar, walking behind them to feel that we're in the same road,...

I think Lollipip was a bit too harsh here....from what we actually were shown it didn't look like she was hardcore stalking him....more like sometimes when she saw him on the street she would walk a few steps with him or maybe walk the same road he probably takes to catch a glimpse if she was feeling down in the dumps. Either that or the show didn't do a good job at showing her bad behavior cause I didn't even get the feeling that he really noticed it or that he was actually indirectly accusing her in that court room. Well, maybe I just misunderstood.

Rather than discussing her as stalker or not, I appreciate that right after learning of how one-who-is-loved-but-does-not-love-back feels about being stalked, she decides to give self-ban immediately to keep her from watching him from afar.
I might be sympathy with her being outcast, lonely throughout 1 year, and understand if she needs someone to look up to and keep her on her feet (he's the hero she would not trace for Iron Man)... or that he's her crush,... However, none can overturn what JW says in the court... It's good enough to me that she reflects herself right away.

5

Required fields are marked *

That's what I think too. I'm sure Ji Wook has a routine and sometimes when she's feeling down and she knows he would be in the area, she would time things so that she can get a glimpse of him on her way to work/school. I don't think her behavior is bad, but I think if it was someone other than Bong Hee, it could have been a slippery slope to full on stalking. I think after the stalking case, Bong Hee was sensitive to the fact that her actions can be perceived as stalking. I'm glad that Bong Hee has such self-awareness about her actions. Ji Wook is not just her crush, but her savior and she definitely doesn't want to commit harassment against someone she respects so much.

I loved how the case was used to show more sides of the characters as well as push their development. Bong-hee was all for her client because she related too well with him. She saw his alleged sincerity, so used it to justify her own stalking. However, when Ji Wook showed his client's perspective, she was able to understand how wrong her own actions were. Her sympathy towards her client led her to push for the settlement that the girl was so adamantly against , but her understanding of her client also pushed her to realize what was off about him. She knew the heartache of being separated from someone you love, so she couldn't understand why he was happy which led her to suspect him and end up saving the girl. Bong-hee is quick to empathize, but she also has to learn that she has to be more objective when handling her clients. It can help and hurt the situation if she gets too emotionally attached. I think Ji Wook will help her with learning that lesson, while I think she will help him have more sympathy towards his own clients. There definitely can be a balance between the two.

Ji Wook's outburst in front of the chaebol mother and her son was hilarious but his words were true. I find it strange that he wants to punish criminals but doesn't want to defend people. Does it mean everyone he sent to jail was always guilty ? A case like Bong Hee would have happened sooner or later so would he end up a lawyer. In the two carriers there is the same percentage to defend/accuse an innocent.

Before Bong Hee...if I understood the first episode correctly, he did get a bad rep as being a bad prosecutor. Probably sent a bunch of people to jail based on circumstantial evidence and without looking into extenuating circumstances. If he didn't know BH personally, he wouldn't even have looked that closely into the case. She was at the scene of the crime red-handed. The knife was there and there was no other suspect.

I know this job as an attorney means he will be defending some lowlives, but I think it will help him become less inflexible.

I like that in this drama, no one seems to be playing coy. Ji Wook is genuinely oblivious (and I think extremely depressed, so his barometer's off). Bong Hee is transparent as glass, but also deals with herself very firmly and sets limits. It's the funniest personality blend but completely charming, since no one's being mean or cruel or hurtful - they're just quirky individuals who happen to have instant chemistry and cameraderie.

Hell, she was telling him he sucked after knowing him less than two months, and he was parrying back. For people who don't consciously know they're friends, that's telling.

Thanks for the recap @lollypip.

I loved this episode. I had a smile on my face for most of the show. I'm really impressed with both our leads. Nam Ji Hyun who plays Bong Hee is only 21 but you would never know it, at least I didn't--I thought she was late twenties to early thirties. As for Ji Chang Wook, is there anything he can't do. Watching him deliver some of those lines was just, wow. I was never really a fan of his before, but now I'm sold. He is showing some pretty impressive range. I couldn't help but smile when I saw them fit in the hip throw he gave the stalker client at the end there. I think this is what happens when you give solid actors great material to work with, and a director and production staff that know what they are about. I have to remind myself though that this is early days and not to keep my hopes up too high.

I'm really getting into this show. Its got the same vibes as I Remember you (same writer right?). I died when BH started humming tonelessly and JW humming along trying to make sense of it was pure gold. I know what she was doing was stalking but i hurt for her a little bit when she was taken aback at hearing his side of things. All she wanted was a little boost to her spirits. She wasnt out to hurt him and realising she did, her pain was so palpable. I really like her character - only she would put up a banner basically calling the attention of a murderer to herself. Now that she's being stalked, i cant wait for the action and angst to rev up.

Also what's with the dad - i was so angered when he almost hit her.

I cant wait for JW to start realising that there are people around him who love him for who he is and that he can rely on them sometimes, if just to take the weight off his shoulders for a while. Also for him to realise that he cares for BH. Because BH is now going to try to not like him with all her might, he's going to have a hard time to get her to be open with her feelings again.

And we have a change of tone again...and again...does this show know what it wants to be?

I have to say this one didn't impress me at all. The humor fell flat because the stalking metaphor made our Bong-hee look creepy. Two years go by and the threat of D.A. Jang means what? I am having a very hard time believing he sat back and let her become an attorney without interference. Why have that threat at all?

Plus, the whole stalking angle was just stupid. If you are being stalked and have successfully hidden yourself, why run into an alley with no other people and then to your apartment, which the stalker was trying to find in the first place? You have a restraining order, go to a crowded place and call the police.

Lastly, if you are the serial killer, why in the world would you wait two whole years to make that threat?

These episodes were silly, but for all the wrong reasons.

Korean dramas tend to lack logic so its better to dismiss these plot holes rather than nitpick at every episode. Still I do agree that the girl who was being stalked was kind of dumb but it was probably to build suspense. Anyways I love this show and I find the balance between humor and thriller nicely balanced but then again this is my opinion.

ALL dramas (no matter where they are made) require viewers to suspend their disbelief. The best dramas create a world with its own consistent rules that make sense so that it is easier to accept what you call a lack of logic. There are plenty of examples of KDs that do this and do it really well. This just isn't one of them.

You can't blame someone who is being chasing for not using logic, panic, fear will overwhelm you, and you will probably try to get somewhere safer, in the victim case, her house because she was already nearby. He chased her, broke the court order, in for her is probably, she just need to go home, feel safe and call the police.

"Lastly, if you are the serial killer, why in the world would you wait two whole years to make that threat?"

This question can still be answered, that's why will have more episodes, not all questions will be answered in the third episode, they will no give everything now. It's only plot hole if the drama end with the answered these questions

Normally, I would agree with you about someone in a flight response using logic, but this woman managed to keep enough of her faculties to disappear the last time this guy was around. Someone who had done so successfully once would at least have thought through a couple of contingency plans, like shoving the jerk out of a bus. This girl has fight. The guy had a broken leg and a broken arm. Someone with the wherewithal to shove a guy in a crowded bus would also have the wherewithal to kick the guy in his broken knee HARD before running off someplace to call the police.

A lot of people think this but nope, a traumatized person doesn't usually have "wherewithal" control. Your conscious mind checks out when you're truly overwhelmed, your body takes over - it's like being shot full of a random drug. Your system recognizes an emergency and if you're lucky, you have good and logical reactions. If you're unlucky, you freeze, panic, lash out, make the wrong choices, etc.

I was an EMT and saw very organized people paralyzed by this, and featherheads instinctively make the right moves. It's a roll of the dice that you can train yourself to anticipate, like if you spar in martial arts, but that's muscle memory - your brain is in the passenger seat. I used to criticize people who did stupid things in emergencies, but now I understand: you genuinely have little control if your "overwhelmed" switch gets flipped.

I also have PTSD and can tell you that certain triggers make me react in an almost out-of-body way. For me at least, it's an operational blackout. I have little control over what I'm doing or saying, and I'm lucky that my go-to reaction is bizarre but not endangering. I 100% believe that a woman approached by her stalker in an enclosed space might shove him to escape, but in an open space might refuse to look behind her and just sprint.

You aren't controlling your own actions. There's no strategy there. There's no fallback for "wherewithal" or "fight" (again, except for heavily trained muscle memory stuff). You're just along for the ride.

I believe he doesn't purposely wait 2 years to make a threat. It's more like he is trying to hide for the whole time, but Bonghee keeps searching for him and is very open about it. He just takes up the challenge. That's why on the note he writes, If you keep looking for me, I’ll find you first. He doesn't want to be found, so if Bonghee is persistent to hunt him, he has no choice but hunts her back.

Thanks for the recap!

I'm officially head over heels for this drama. I love how it manages to imbue humor throughout, even in the serious, emotional beats. It did an even better job of that this episode.

You mentioned Ji Chang-Wook's expressions, which are so on-point. But I'm also seriously crediting Nam Ji-Hyun and Choi Tae-Joon. They are really showing their comedic chops in this, especially their physical comedy.

I loved the focus on love vs. obsession because so few dramas have their characters address this. Though I doubt she went out of her way (too much) to catch glimpses of him, I'm glad to have a character self-reflect so quickly. The way he moved like a zombie through life the last two years, lol, probably made simply "going the same way to work" as him pretty easy while she nursed her crush. So her behavior still has an innocence to it, but I'm so glad they explored just why it's still problematic. Hahaha, when she gave herself a restraining order and even informed him of it though! Ahhh, this girl. She makes some scenes so hard to watch in the best possible way!

The subject this episode took our OTP to a very unique, painful, yet sweet place. You can see that he already has such a soft-spot for Bong Hee, but he wants so badly to cut her off. Still I think it's starting to break HIS heart a little whenever she holds her feelings back so I'd say he'll be a goner for her soon enough. She's already worked her way into his heart...he just needs to accept it!

+100 to all of this. I really liked that they addressed the whole love vs. obsession issue so quickly (or even at all), and had the heroine be so self-aware even to the point where she was maybe overly self-aware. I think the fact that BH tried to stop herself when she became aware that her stalkerish actions could hurt JW is what separates her from her client - she was considerate of his potential feelings, and that really speaks to her as a character, and the genuine-ness of her feelings for JW.

Still, she was smart to compare obsession and love but jiwook definitely looked disappointed when she said that she doesn't like him.

Same here. I also didn't get such implication when he talked about stalking thing on the court.

If my poor memory is correct, the last time he requested her to stay away from him was before time skip. And the reason was more because she had turned his world upside down, making him lose job, pride, etc etc. Meanwhile, stalking action (which I think wasn't even on fangirling level) happened just afterward, during the 2 years time skip.

His request was for what happen before the time skip. Her action was during the time skip. That's why I believe her action and his request were not 'cause and effect'.

And just like you said, it's her who drew a red link between those two unrelated matters due to paranoia.

4

I think if they worked at the same place, it wouldn't have felt like stalking. But here, it seems like she goes out of her way to get a few peeks of him. And with him plainly telling her not to meet him again and feeling like he lost the job he loved because of her , I guess seeing her again and again would only have brought that back to him and so he might have felt uncomfortable. But, once he Realizes that it was not because of her that he lost his job, I think it ll be fine.

Required fields are marked *

I think a lot of us have come to the conclusion that she was paranoid about his words in the courtroom. His utter confusion over her personal restraining order indicates that he never really noticed or felt bothered by her behavior, likely because it really wasn't anywhere near stalking. I think this was just a case of her taking her crush slightly too far and then feeling overly ashamed for it when she saw how her behavior would be viewed if it was at a more problematic level. So, essentially, I feel like this episode was about her catching herself before she went too far and I love that.

Except, well, they kind of do: the courthouse. All of the glimpses she steals during the time skip montage are at the courthouse, where she would naturally gravitate towards as a lawyer/law student, right?

I really, really love today's episodes (5 and 6). First of all, editing has improved and I didn't find myself complaining.

1) That whistling was pure gold and adorable.
2) I usually hate time jumps in Kdrama because it never makes senses and/or done correctly. But in this case, I love the time jump. It shows that life isn't rosy and it takes time to recover from a massive slump. Very relatable in my opinion and Ji-Wook really stood by his words when he says that they should not meet with each other again.
3) I also love the season scenes transitions. It was done very beautifully and Nam Ji Hyun looks lovely. I freaking love her hair, outfits, and accessories in this drama. They're chic and elegant.
4) Ji-Wook pouting and sad faces are adorable. He's like a lost and sad puppy (reminds me of Louie from "Shopping King Louie").
5) I also agree with Lollipip's opinions that he's putting most of the blame on BongHee when it's mostly his fault. He was the one who decided to submit the second knife as evidence. I understand that it hurts his pride but he shouldn't really take it out on BongHee as harsh as he is doing now. But it looks like ep 7 and 8 will help him sort out his feelings for her.
5) I love BongHee's reactions to him speaking informally to her and the way she teases him. It shows how comfortable he is around her and how happy she was to see that their relationship do amount to something.
6) Drama keeps on getting better that my expectations are starting to soar. Love today's episodes soo soo much. It really has a nice balance of everything and it wasn't overdone.
7) Fighting Suspicious Partner. I pray that ratings will hit double digits.
8) I want to see more mother-daughter scenes. I love supportive mom.

I agree!

I couldn't see where Jihae was coming from commenting on Bonghee's clothing choices as shabby. BH looked very elegant. I want more cute scenes between BH and mom too.

This time skip makes sense. It's weird in kdramas how characters go from strangers to enemies to romantic interest in 3 months because they always run into each other in weird situations. I like how even though their paths crossed constantly in those 2 years, they didn't reconnect. And I like how they can reconnect now on a more leveled playing field.

Okay please let me release my frustration for accidentally watching this drama when my mother was streaming it on her phone. Like, why should I have found it NOW? Why not 2 months later so I can have watched the full episode?? This drama is something I will certainly marathon in one night (who needs sleep anyway?) Yet it has only been on 2nd week. Darn, the struggle is very much real.

I particularly love the scene when Bonghee defends herself from Heejoon's father by quoting Presumption of Innocence. My heart goes "manseeeee!!" because I can barely find any other heroine who is aware of the principle and not just silently crying in the darkness when being misunderstood.

Everything in this drama is addicting. The changing tension that feels natural, the chemistry between OTP, the adorable shameless puppy Eunhyuk ... Oh, and I'm glad that Bonghee can return to society, even though there are some people not welcoming her, at least she can graduate and get a job. You know, the worst case is just like what happened to Ki Hamyung (Lee Jongsuk) from Pinnocchio. His family can't even go to the market.

I'm sorry you were hooked with this drama unintentionally when it has just started airing. And from my experiences, there's no turning-back-time to unsee what you have seen, nor fast-forward till last eps to marathon the whole series. You have to handle the torture of waiting for 2 eps each week, and subs 1 day later... during the next 2 months... Just as I do... :D

I agree so much with you about the moment Bong Hee defended herself to Hee Joon's dad! She didn't say sorry as if she'd done anything wrong, and I was so happy. How refreshing!

I love Bong- Hee's spirit. Even when she was accused of murder, she put on a cheerful but a realistic attitude, determined to weather the storm of her trail. When her ex's dad came by to threaten and harass her, I was cheering for her because she was respectful of his loss and age but at the same time, didn't hesitate to say her piece and not cower like some kdrama heroines.
Also I guess you can never take the healer outta Ji Chang Wook. His tackle was just soo fluid and awesome and with the sun behind him, that shot of him just made her (and me :P) fall all over in love with him again.. Swoonnn!! :D Their chemistry sparkles on screen whenever they banter and bicker.

I seriously love JCW and NJH's chemistry. I wasn't originally planning on watching this show (just reading recaps), but I got sucked in so quickly by them and I haven't regretted it at all.

I love her too! She makes me cringe sometimes, but I also like how part of her charm is that she makes other people cringe. They try to make her feel uncomfortable, so she makes them feel uncomfortable instead.

I love how she can veer from contemplative and earnest to this breezy, sassy grin. A weird comparison, but she reminds me of Chief Kim in Chief Kim and how his attitude just riles everyone up - sometimes without meaning to. And Ji Wook reminds me a little of Seo Yul - they're both easily riled up and have this explosive temper

The scene that really stood out for me was Bong Hee refusing to be cowed by the lousy excuse of an Attorney Gen (or whatever her ex's father is). She was amazing. She remained polite and did nothing that could be used against her, and she spoke the truth and quoted her rights in the face of his unreasonableness. I've hardly ever watched a scene where the person in the right had a chance to properly stand-up to someone in authority and vocalize the truth and the situation in detail. She also knew when to shut up so as not to provoke further. That was a well written scene for her character!

Eun-hyuk must have done something horrendous, that Ji-Wook can´t forgive him after all his affectionate antics. Pretty sure he was the one who slept with his ex, but I still hope there was something more behind all this.
How much did I love how they displayed the passing of the years? Answer: A LOT! What a beautiful scene. They way Bong-Hee still followed him around, not daring to approach him because she respected his wishes, but still couldn´t take her eyes off him was just pure puppy love. It saddened me that she compared herself to that crazy stalker and his psychosis. She is trying so hard to please Ji-Wook after all he has done for her and not freaking him out.
Wookie makes me relate to his character so much. His two year long depression is really hard to watch. I just want to see him smile.

NJH is not a big star (yet) but she always make the audience falls in love with her character. I drop Shopping King Louis in epi 1 because she was the ugly one and the plot seems too cliche. Before this drama I pick it up again and watch the whole thing, you cant help but love her.

I believe the rating will slowly increase, just like shopping king louis, might even surpass other show.

I love that part where the seasons were changing and they were passing each other by. It was such a melancholic way of showing the time jump. JCW and NJH's acting is also spot on in these episodes, I couldn't help but go through some Kdrama feels afterwards!

Thank you for the recap Lollypip :-)

Loved what you said here:

"The way he looks at Bong-hee just kills me, since it’s equal parts wariness and longing, and it’s obvious that he cares for her a lot more than he wants to admit."

So very true. JW's expressions and actions are very telling...melts my heart every time. Especially the scene in the courthouse when he noticed it was Bonghee beside him. He looked relieved and happy to see her. As if a weight on his shoulder had been lifted. That amidst the slump he's in, her presence is a welcome reprieve.

I am so in love with the two of them..their chemistry, their acting, their idiosyncrasies; as well as the show's premise and the writing (which for the most part imo, is top notch).

I'm really glad they brought in the stalking part! So many dramas try to portray a stalking hero as being romantic, while in many ways it could just as well be really creepy. If someone wants to break off contact, you respect this!!
What Bong Hee did was portrayed as kind of cute, as I interpret it as her only going to find him when she was feeling really down and just catching a glimpse or being in his vicinity in general (without looking for contact) was enough for her. But I love how she self-reflects on how unwanted attention was probably worse for him immediately once she realizes what she was doing was wrong.
And I love how it became clear the stalker was a creep the moment he claimed to know what the girl felt, because you can't just automatically assume a girl feels yes when she clearly says no.

This episode has cemented my interest in the drama and now I'm in until the end <3

Yes, the stalking being equated with 'true-love' nonsense has always rubbed me the wrong way. This and 2nd leads continually appearing and trying to get attention or force 'official' acknowledgement of a non-existent relationship. How disregarding a person's wishes could ever be construed as romantic or proof of love defies logic and good sense.

That so many shows portray stalking as romantic rather than creepy-obsessive and that writers keep writing this into their scripts is incomprehensible.

Thanks LollyPip! ?

Now that we've finally hit the present, it's getting better. We're all waiting for information on the deal behind Ji Wook's and Eun Hyuk's frenemy-bromance. So much emotion in every little interaction between those boys. Eun Hyuk's whole body acting is cute. He really does not mind making a fool of himself for his beloved Ji Wook.

I like that Ji Wook and Bong Hee had those 2 months working together, 2 years previously, and being a little more familiar with each other. It adds more layers to their getting together now and their conversations are that much more honest.

Couple of questions that arise:... what has the killer had been doing in the last 2 years and what does he hope to gain by emerging now. He'd seen the banner and taken it down and put Bong Hee's number into his phone. Then he bided his time (unless he was in the military or prison or overseas) keeping watch and getting to know her whereabouts. Now he decides to threaten/stalk/scare Bong Hee. So why now? If he keeps quiet, no one would find him. And does he have a connection to Bong Hee other than that he happened to kill her ex in her home or thought she may have seen him with a dead body? And if he's the same guy that people have seen with dead bodies... is he yet another serial killer on the loose and no one (in this drama) is even noticing it? ?

Yes, as another commenter said... we need a cross-over to Mystery Queen to get the murder aspect sorted out! ?

What struck me the most was how I identified with Ji Wook. As a lawyer, I know what his feelings are: we hate the prosecutors and we hate the other lawyers. And we do hate the judges também. All my friends are like that (lawyers, prosecutors and judges. We hate each other). You see, it's a universal truth for jurists.
