Goblin writer Kim Eun-sook returns with period drama Mr. Sunshine
by girlfriday
Pre-production work has begun for the next drama from hit writer Kim Eun-sook, of The Lonely Shining Goblin and Descended From the Sun fame (also Heirs, Secret Garden, and Lovers in Paris, among others). She’s announced that the synopsis is complete and script work has begun for her new drama, a period piece set at the turn of the twentieth century titled Mr. Sunshine.
The drama is set in 1900 to 1905, and tells the story of a soldier in the righteous army falling in love with an aristocrat’s daughter. It begins in 1871 when the hero boards an American military ship as a little boy during the Shinmiyangyo, a U.S. military expedition to Korea that resulted in a battle. He lands in the U.S. and then years later returns to Korea as an American soldier, to the country that abandoned him. While stationed in Korea, he’ll meet and fall in love with a nobleman’s daughter.
The term “righteous army” refers to Korea’s long history of commoners taking up arms to protect their country against foreign invaders, dating back to Goryeo. The righteous army made a comeback in 1895 to 1905 as Japan imposed more and more control over Korea, and eventually became the backbone of the independence movement’s guerilla militia during the Japanese occupation.
Kim Eun-sook explained, “It was a subject I’ve been wanting to write about for a long time… It’s not the story of independence fighters, but righteous armies. They aren’t recorded in history, but they’re stories we ought to know.” About covering a less common time period (most dramas and films set in that era tend to take place in 1910 to 1945, and make use of the set featured in Gaksital), Kim said, “There are sets of the Japanese occupation period, but there are no locations that exist for early 1900. We have to build the sets, and in order to do that, I have to hurry up and write the script. The synopsis is out and I’ve begun scriptwriting.”
Kim will be reuniting with PD Lee Eung-bok, with whom she made her last two massive hits, Goblin and Descended From the Sun. There’s no news yet of casting offers, but Kim Eun-sook said, “I have an actor in mind [for the leading character]. Because the character requires strong narration and wide breadth of emotion, I want an extremely good actor.” Well, I don’t know that anyone would say they want a mediocre actor, but at least Kim Eun-sook has enough clout to actually secure A-list talent.
It sounds like familiar territory for the writer after Descended’s heavy focus on the military, but the time period will likely become the focal point of this new drama, which is an era I look forward to seeing portrayed. These days Chicago Typewriter’s paltry glimpses at 1930s Kyungsung is making me hungry for a full-length drama from that era; maybe Mr. Sunshine will scratch that itch and tell an inspiring story of the generation that came before.
Mr. Sunshine is planning to air in spring or summer of 2018.

Ok... at first this was exciting and I even screencapped my first downvote but now, this is confusing.
I went from just 1 downvotes to nearly every comment I made recently getting downvotes. I'm guessing it's the same person I offended going on a downvoting spree through my comments feed page.
I don't mind the downvotes, they're just numbers to me, but could you at least speak out and tell me what I did that was so wrong? I will apologize if I'm wrong, but I can't figure it out. I'll try to inform myself more on Korean history if that's what's bothering you.

Good point. I do wish she'd spend more time developing her characters and love story. She certainly has memorable and funny characters but they often lack depth. Her love stories seem strongly aided by slow-motion, loud music and camera angles. Still she does manage to bring a spark to her story telling. Seems weird to say for a commercially successful writter, but I feel like she has potential that she hasn't achieved yet.

I'm totally with you on this. Her stories are far from perfect but she always has a special something that keeps you hooked even if there are parts you really don't like. For example she created some of my all time favorite characters (Oska - Secret garden; The middle aged men in A gentlemen's dignity and the grim reaper from goblin) but i wouldn't watch those daramas a second time because they disappointed me in one way or the other (i mean secret garden didn't really obey by the implemented mystery rules and the solution was...well meh; goblin well was draggy at some points and felt rushed at the end and descendants well that was a little too much on the big bad guy part for my taste and well i would have liked it to focus more on the conflict soldier vs. doctor) When her dramas end i can't help but feel a little disappointed not for the romance or the character parts but the stories and the worlds she's creating because they aren't as well thought out as they could be. That's why I'm always waiting first for recaps for her dramas even when i know i will end up watching them anyway. lol. Just for that little special something she is able to create and implement in her dramas.

You'd have to have major balls or a contract you can't get out of to turn down KES. Her dramas are so popular that even years later, you'll be able to get new fans because there will be still people watching her old dramas and discovering you, and celebrities making references and impersonations of classic roles. The exposure is going to be great for anyone, even A-list stars.

Interesting! It's true that Korean dramas have not touched on turn-of-the-20th century Joseon. I don't expect Kim Eun-sook to deal with the nitty-gritty of the politics of that time, but it does sound like it will make a sweeping background for her love story.
I wonder who she has in mind for her male lead.

It seems to me that KES always focuses mainly on the romance in the story, and that the context in which she sets her dramas are generally just used to throw her characters together. Hoping that's not the case with this, but even if it is, maybe dramas set in this era will become a trend?

Goblin was good because of the cast not because of the writing. If the cast didn't have the awesome chemistry with one another it would be a complete disaster. KES is really good at getting the right cast and team for her dramas. Even though her writing isn't that's great.

'Complete disaster' probably not fair but I don't think Goblin would have received the rating it did if it weren't for the cast and the team that made it work.

I can partially agree about the plot. It felt a bit empty, especially in DOTS...
However, I really really appreciate that KES's recent dramas (Goblin and DOTS) have no second lead clichés. That is one thing I am really sick of already, so that's one good thing for me.
And she kept me entertained, I was able to finish all of her most recent dramas I watched (Goblin, DOTS, Heirs) which is quite a feat for me since I tend to drop whatever bores me.
One more great thing is humour. She knows how to create funny situations (at least in Goblin and DOTS, I don't remember The Heirs). Goblin and DOTS made me laugh out loud more than once. And that is great, because I usually watch a drama to laugh and relax (at least these days).
But all in all, I guess it comes down do personal preferences. If you are looking for a funny romance with epic moments, Kim Eun Sook it is for you. And that genre probably appeals to the public, since she's even won an award for her script.

While, personally, KES dramas don't tend to fare well upon reflection ("wait, why was I so obsessed?") and for all her faults, I have to give her major props for getting out the "evil/clingy 2nd lead female" business, zippy dialogue that reminds me of classic hollywood rom-com banter, and for being entertaining.

I love DotS more than Goblin too. I wasn't as invested in the main romance of Goblin as I was in the main romance of DotS (I have two aunts married to military officers so I caught a glimpse into what their love lives was like) also, I'm more biased towards Lee Dong-wook and Yoo Inna than Gong Yoo and Kim Go-eun, so that could have been part of it. Maybe it's just me, but one thing that I like about dramas set in those eras is the costumes/wardrobe and the setting.
There should be a cafe/bar like Carpe Diem (also found in Gaksital), old cars, femme fatale fighting for independence, and jazz--I wish the time frame in Mr. Sunshine is somehow stay true to those eras.
In Chicago, unfortunately, the song Yoo Jin-oh is whistling was originally released in 1954, instead of 1920s/30s.

Mr. Sunshine is set in an earlier time so I don't think there will be Bridal Mask/CT-style bars and fashions. I'm thinking that if there will be Western clothes, it will be something along the lines of Titanic or early Downton Abbey.

Wow. Impressive. It's admirable of her to cover a time period that few people have done before. Say what you will about her talents as a writer, one thing is guaranteed. It's definitely going to be a huge hit. I had thought that when she mentioned a period piece, she was going to touch on the Joseon time period that most dramas focus on, I had no idea it would be so close to what is considered modern times. Good for her!

Actors in their 30s I'd say Ha Jung-woo is the extremely good actor of the whole industry but he is probably too busy and perhaps too big of an actor to return to dramas.
I'll have to eat my words if he does return to dramas because the queen herself Jeon Do-yeon did it.
For dramas I'd say Song Joong-ki and Hyun-bin are out because they've already been cast in her other dramas but we never know. I wouldn't mind if she recast either of them.
We are left with Jo Jung-suk, Kim Mu-yeol (not enough star-power but he can one man a drama), and maybe Yoo Ah-in if he is still around.
Then there is Park Jung-min, and Jung-woo who are extremely talented but not as popular.

Undoubtedly Writer Kim with such a solid record as a hit-maker, Mr. Sunshine will most likely have a massive budget for A-list stars to headline the project. Reading the synopsis, undoubtedly there will be some non-Korean actors with speaking roles in the story. PD Lee, please dedicate part of the budget to hire "real" actors in order to avoid the usual cringefest whenever non-Korean actors are on the screen?
Please do not let me suffer through another case of Agus-itus who induces the opposite response whenever he tries to emote. Even smaller roles like Kim Tan's surfer dude friend makes me wish that I have a special dedicated fast-forwarding button on my remote for these scenes. Perhaps someone can design an app similar to "ad-block" to filter out these actors.
Hopefully with the rising popularity of K-dramas globally perhaps there will be good foreign actors with real credentials who would be enthusiastic to be cast in a blockbuster drama like Mr. Sunshine. At the very least please hire actors decent enough to help minimize the involuntary upward rolling motion of my eyeballs? Please Drama God, spare my poor eyeballs!

Since the desegregation of the US Army did not happen until 1948 (according to Wikipedia), it would be fitting for the lead to be in an America infantry unit of Asian American men. What a terrific opportunity to cast some established non-Korean Asian actors or introduce Asian-American actors to the Korean audience! Perhaps a cameo by Daniel Henney as an officer or a cute puppy character for Henry Lau?

Hi bbstl, I am much more forgiving for Korean actors who cannot speak English with perfect inflection even though it does sometimes dampen an otherwise stellar performance of an actor/actress. Overall I do wish drama writers will just eliminate scenes with English dialogue or for characters who suppose to be born and/or raised in English-speaking countries but I don't mind it too much since I do feel it is unrealistic expectation on my part.
I do give Song Joong-Ki an A for effort in DOTS but an F for Agus since he is a native English speaker. To be fair, I would consider David McInnis as one of the better non-Korean actors in dramas, but since Agus is relatively central to the plot and has some character development, his scenes with wooden performances makes this drama blockbuster feels like an American B-movie.
Since the American army was segregated in the beginning of 1900, it is possible to eliminate hiring terrible non-Korean actors by having a Asian-American unit where the soldiers speak to each other in Korean with shared Korean heritage.

bbstl
May 29, 2017 at 1:21 PM
Oh, in no way do I disagree with you about the wooden performances we see from Westerners in kdramas. (As in so many Beanie comments, where do they find these guys??) I so often wonder if a lot of that isn't directorial choice for the domestic audience (why???) (and if the actors aren't grinding their teeth) but I've never seen David McInnis, for example, in anything else.
The situation I'm referring to often has the inverse problem of why Korean characters were adopted as toddlers by North American families but hit the ground in Korea speaking perfect Korean, what is that magic? At least we can assume this new character will be old enough and have Korean characters with him in America to help him hold on to his Korean.
But I guess I thought Kang Sora's Russian was great in Misaeng because I don't speak Russian, so almost any level of English will be ok for our hero for the audience that counts, the non-native English speaking audience, you are right.

I think it's pretty obvious from the fact that the protagonist headed to the US in 1871 as a little boy and the story is set in 1905+ that the actor she has in mind is in his mid-30s (at the very very least). With her tendency to cast A list stars too, you can probably narrow down the choices a little as well. Kang Haneul is very unlikely imo, and Park Bogum is virtually impossible.
I wonder why people are excited for this though. KES basically writes love stories in unconventional settings. Her dramas are essentially all about romance. The era, environment, background are all gimmicks really.

I did not watch Descendants of the sun because of its genre and its reviews and I mildly despite my annoyances liked heirs. I enjoyed Goblin but the middle dragged an there was too much filler and too many product placements which messed with the tone. But she writes very good emotional scenes and male characters like Goblin and the grim reaper. However she is not so good at female characters for me. I heard that Descendants of the sun female leads were good but Goblin was a setback really. I am going to watch definitely because of the time period probably no product placement and the fact it is an epic romance which for a hopeless romantic is the best. For male lead gong yoo I can see park bogum maybe or perhaps a return to song Jong ki.

Yes to Yoon Eunhye! And can KES just pick Gong Yoo again? Yes? No? Please... hahaha! I just really want these two to reunite in dramaland. I am asking for too much, I guess.

In DOTS, she collaborated with another writer, so I assume she could not freely express her ideas and fantasy there as in Goblin.

given how poorly manXman i swritten.. there really isn't any story.. but the actors are good..
I wonder if DOTS was worse than what we got before KES joined

Btw, out of all Kim Eun-sook's dramas that I watched, I think A Gentleman's Dignity is worth a mention :P That one and Secret Garden are my favorites, then The Heirs happened T_T

Me three!
Or perhaps Jo In-sung because he said that he was interested to play in her drama. Kang Dong-won in his first drama would be fantastic too.

Whatever people say Kim Eun-Sook is really great. She helps somehow underrated but good actors shoot to stardom and sometime puts great messages in her dramas (I am not talking about Heirs, that one was awfull).
After Dots people started appricating their soldiers a lot more and now they are going to prise people who might have died for their country and even history doesn't remember them well.
Yes, her stories might be cringey and too romantic but it doesn't feel pointless.

I don't disagree that she has the power to attract viewers and make her dramas the talk of the town. But if she that ability, why not use it in a way that creates more discussion than just about the cringey plot and the romance? Romance dramas are good but compelling dramas are better.

I don't think all writers are obligated to create dramas that are there for more than entertainment. Some does, which is great. But I don't mind when a writer like KES just sets her goal to creating an entertaining drama. Some people watch dramas just to be entertained, and are not looking for more. If KES main priority is creating a drama that entertains people, I'll say she has done her job well.

I don't care what kind of genre a show is as long as I like the romance between the main characters, so thank god for romance drama writers because they are writing for ME :)

She has already stated the she writes only romance because love is all she knows. She wrote a dramatic movie called Fly High starring Ji Hyun-woo but it didn't do well, so she possibly decided to stick to what she's good at. Frankly, there's nothing wrong with that. Not everyone wants nerve-wracjing dramas all the time and that's when we need Kim Eun-sook.

YSY is great and underrated, but I think he looks too young for the role even though he's 30 years old. Strangely, Yoo Seung-Ho's younger but has the gravitas of someone much older than 23.

ysy does look young despite his age~
from the description its written as a young boy who went to the US, and returned 10 years later. so i assume the character's age is late teens to 20's. haha
i hope ysy gets a breakthrough role again. he's been stamped as takgu for years now ?

I really don't like this writer. The only drama I liked written by her is Goblin and a major reason is the second lead couple. I find her writing lacking, the only thing that saves her dramas or makes them a hit is the cast.

It's ok not to like her, but unfair to say that the only that makes her drama a hit are the cast. Many dramas with a hit cast have had much less success, while her dramas 100% have been hits. No matter how you put it, her writing has a lot to do with it. It might not be to everyone's taste, but it's a fact that her writing plays a big role in making hits.

I would have agreed with you if she hadn't written Goblin, but honestly, Goblin was a completely fresh concept about "creatures" I'd never imagined before- Goblin and the Grim Reaper. you can say what you like about the pacing but the world building for the show was great- even the premise for the goblin's bride was unique. It may have been romance centric to you but i honestly didn't feel that way- I was fascinated about learning more about the lives of her characters because it was like a whole new world I got to explore.
So certainly a strong cast helps but I have to give her due credit and I hope she keeps up the good work!
