Drama viewership ratings for the week of May 1-7, 2017

A few shows ended this week, which means there’ll be some big shakeups next week (or the week after, depending on how all these pre-emptions go). Any drama fan knows that pre-emptions are bad for the soul, and they can be bad for dramas too—though not always, since Perfect Wife was able to end at a semi-respectable 6.1% thanks to the lack of competition.

Of course, Whisper continued to hold first place in the beginning of the week, while over in the Wednesday-Thursday time slot, Mystery Queen reigned supreme at a little over 9.0%. Both of its competitors, Radiant Office and Saimdang, Light’s Diary ended this week, with the latter ending early due to an episode cut.

For weekend cable fans, it was slim pickings with only Man to Man to watch, although the quirky spy comedy seems to be holding its own quite well. It’s no Strong Woman Do Bong-soon, that’s for sure, but if we used that as a barometer, then it’ll tough for any JTBC show to surpass it. (Still, never say never!)

For good slice of life drama, I realy recommend you to watch misaeng, reply 1988, and age of youth

I loved Drinking Solo.

Misaeng, like Radiant Office takes place in the office but it's a lot more depressing. It is a great drama but don't expect romance(less than RO!) and no comedy.

Age of Youth is a delightful youth drama and on the other end of the spectrum w.r.t to age, I love Dear My Friends.

If you like Ha Suk Jin, you can try Drinking Solo(that is if you have not already). It's very funny, slice of life about teachers and students at a private school which prepares for the civil service exam.

Age of Youth and Dear My Friends are recommended. Actually you should check most of jTbC and TVN drama especially last year. jTBC has many great drama last year, that I was so proud to be jTBC girl last year.

Two of my favorites from JTBC last year were This Week My Wife is Having An Affair and Ms. Temper and Nam Jun Ki.

Liar still dead last. Yay.

Rooting for it to reach 2% in the last episode, but can it be done?

Rating cannot be considered last as it airs on a cable channel

Even if it's not technically last, less than 2% is still low for TVN. Although, their shows do seem to be struggling in the ratings of late.

That's not a criticism of the show or its fans. Just commentary on the numbers.

Take heart. It's aimed at a younger demographic, which tends to watch online. Look at the number of comments on Dramafever vs the other shows and you'll get a better feel for its relative popularity.

I sure wish Viki and Dramafever would release viewer statistics (weekly number of unique viewers per episode.) Then we could have a more complete picture of what's trending.

It's crazy that the #2-rated drama in the Mon/Tues slot has higher ratings (by multiple percentage points) than the #1-rated drama of the Wed/Thurs slot.

Wed/Thurs slot used to do better than Mon/Tues but not these days.

However, the new crop of Wed/Thurs looks interesting. My guess is that the ratings will go up overall.

A bit sad for Mystery Queen though because this is my current favorite show on air and I hope they don't suffer bad ratings. So hard to choose, I want Ji Chang Wook and Nam Ji Hyun to do well too!

I am curious about how the Wed/Thurs competition will shape up. Mystery Queen's should have already built its viewer base and the two new dramas will probably open to decent numbers going by the buzz.

Ruler looks quite intense, I hope it will be a good replacement for Rebel which is ending soon.

I have a hunch that Ruler and SP will surpass MQ, both of them will get double digit rating but not sure which one will get first place

I'm sooo curious to see the ratings battle between new batch of dramas ! Let the battle begins !

1

Required fields are marked *

My prediction : Ruler will be the winner next week. SP probably will start around what MQ's rating right now. The rating gap won't be that huge in my opinion. SP has the potential to surpass MQ (and Ruler) if it is good. Depends. After what happened with Saimdang and Chief Kim, we can never know what will happen.

4

Required fields are marked *

I agree with you. I didn't expect Chief Kim to be such a hit. Office + comedy aren't ratings magnet. So, it's very possible that SP can surpass MQ and Ruler. However, I think Chief Kim wouldn't be as successful without Namgoong Min. I am not sure if Ji Chang Wook has the comedic talent equal to this man. Thankfully, Nam Ji Hyun is a strong partner.

My hopes for Ruler lie in the acting abilities of the leads and the interesting premise. However, the writers are unknowns and L seems to have a substantial part, so it's not a shoo in for success.

My prediction: Ruler will start really strong about 10-12%, SP will come 3rd place with rating about 5-8%

I feel empty without CT this week. I mean seriously empty that I lost interest to other drama. Man to Man made me confused, at times I feel I love it, but sometimes I don't. Probably better for me to binge watch it after it finished.

Looking forward to see new drama next week. I almost forgot that we still won't see Fight For My Way next week :(

I would love to see a Kdrama adaptation of "Great Expectations", it already has a lot of great similarities to standard makjang tropes but I think a good adaptation would subvert those tropes and could make a very powerful show. Imagine bitchy Estella with her second-lead personality as the main lead, or the tantalizing possible birth secret that is actually not true in any way. Not to mention the possibilities of the Miss Havisham character.

Very true. Maybe this is the kind of material for the big screen and in the hand of a talented film maker like Park Chan-wook.
He did well with "The Handmaiden" which was inspired by Sarah Waters' "Fingersmith."
It scored a 95% from the critics and 93% from the movie fans on RT. That was amazingly high for a foreign film.

OP said "compared to Strong Woman" which is accurate since Strong Woman was JTBCs most successful drama to date.
Also, being on Netflix itself doesn't mean that it's a good show. Netflix offers a wide range of trash television shows and movies. They're a genre unto themselves.

It's not a flop, for jTbC which thier average ratings between 1-2% it's great, the only drama that maneged to hit 3% last year was My Wife Is Having Affair, so it's not bad.

It's actually a flop since its biggest production cost. My Wife reach 3% but it don't take so much money to produce.

Rom-com dramas tend to have a lot more comments than action/thrillers/legal dramas.

I enjoy seeing the action and suspense, but I don't often gush about it. However, I tend to comment more about the lead couple in a rom-com and their cute/sweet chemistry or not, etc.

I'm guessing it has to do with why the majority of us actually watch k-dramas. I generally stick to my English-language shows for dramas like those.

Romance, historical, action and fantasy are cool in k-dramas, but I find myself getting incredibly irritated when watching the corporate, political fair. I don't know if it's because I don't really understand their legal system or because I do. I'm also on the fence with their medical dramas--why they insist on such graphic operation scenes is beyond me, but also because I'm so irked by the politics.

I've been waiting to watch MtM but need to wait for Netlifx. But hearing this is not SWDBS actually makes me want to see it more. I really did not like Strong Woman and thought it was extremely poorly written, so this is good news for me!

One question I have. I hear people mentioning how funny MtM is and some people comparing it to SWDBS. What type of humor is it? I didn't like the slap-stick humor found in SWDBS so I'm really hoping it's not like that. I don't like that over-the-top, slap-stick humor.
