Strong Woman Do Bong-soon: Episode 13

Now get ready to say goodbye to our light and fluffy romcom, as we’re given a hefty dose of anguish, pyrotechnics, and some good old-fashioned violence. It’s time to see if Bong-soon will save the day… but who will save her if she can’t?

Also, on top of an already crazy moving week, we’re switching the order a bit: I’ll be recapping Episode 13, and murasakimi has graciously agreed to cover Episode 14 for me. (Curse you real world for messing up our schedule – we have dramas to watch, darn it!)

EPISODE 13 RECAP: “Nevertheless”

Bong-soon runs straight to Min-hyuk, sobbing that Kyung-shim has been kidnapped as she asks him to help find her. He tries to ask for more details, but Bong-soon nearly begs him not to ask questions and to just help her find her friend. Min-hyuk asks, “If I find him, what are you going to do by yourself?”

Bong-soon can barely speak past her tears as she rattles off information about Kim Jang-hyun and how she just went to his junkyard, but he wasn’t there. She pleads again for Min-hyuk to help her find Kyung-shim, and he reaches out to gently wipe away her tears, “Okay, I’ll look for her. But let’s go together. Don’t go alone, okay?”

Min-hyuk pulls her into his arms and tells her that everything will be all right as she sobs against his chest.

At the station, Gook-doo discusses with his team captain how Jang-hyun’s tastes have evolved from taking small and slender women to targeting women randomly once the police learned his preference, leading to his attack on Kyung-shim. His plans changed again when Kyung-shim “escaped,” and now he’s hunting out of revenge.

At the same time, Min-hyuk deduces that Jang-hyun used Hee-ji as bait to distract the police so he could grab Kyung-shim. He’s worried that the culprit won’t be content with just taking Kyung-shim, as she and Bong-soon are friends. Ahh, she hasn’t told him about the video, so he doesn’t know that Jang-hyun told Bong-soon to come find him.

Min-hyuk crouches in front of Bong-soon and implores her not to try and do everything by herself. She just quietly hiccups Kyung-shim’s name as she cries. Scared, Min-hyuk takes out his tracking necklace and fastens it around Bong-soon’s neck. He thinks, “I hope you’ll understand my heart that wants to protect you, even if it’s just like this.”

Out loud, Min-hyuk tells her that the necklace will protect her and asks her to wear it from now on. He once again brushes away her tears and offers to take her home.

Gook-doo’s team gathers together their evidence on Jang-hyun, and we finally learn some of his backstory. Jang-hyun lives with his elderly mother and has no criminal record — however, he was rejected from his mandatory military service due to “psychological” issues. (I’ll say.) On top of that, he killed someone “with fire” when he was fifteen and spent time in juvie for it.

Gook-doo has looked into his immigration records which show that Jang-hyun hasn’t left the country recently, meaning that Jang-hyun’s junkie minion lied for his boss. Gook-doo guesses that the two are in on it together and figures that there’s something at the junkyard they can’t see, so he wants to go back and investigate further.

Both Bong-soon and Min-hyuk have a restless night with Bong-soon sleeping on the floor by her phone, and Min-hyuk working on some kind of computer program. As she gets ready, Bong-soon reaches out a shaky hand and watches the video of Kyung-shim again, this time listening to the sounds in the background and comparing them to the noises she heard at the junkyard. She recognizes the sound of Minion’s blowtorch and rushes out.

At the office, Min-hyuk is busy working on the same computer program. Secretary Gong checks in and wonders where Bong-soon is, asking if she’s out getting ready for her video game presentation that day. Hardly.

At the hospital, Jaws and his buddy check themselves out against Bong-ki’s recommendation. Bong-ki tries to persuade Jaws that his treatment isn’t finished, and we finally learn Jaws’ real name: Ah Ga-ri, meaning Trap (as in “Shut your trap”), heh. While Jaws defends his name, Kwang-do thrashes around, unintelligibly moaning that his butt itches.

We also check in with Boss Tak as he continues on his enlightenment trek. He seeks guidance from Nizamuddin (apologies for spelling the name incorrectly before) about what direction his life should take, but the monk would rather borrow the boss’ car keys so he can go to the market and get hair supplies.

Acting on her hunch, Bong-soon runs to the junkyard and ignores her phone notification for the video game presentation. At the office, everyone has assembled, but there is no Bong-soon. Min-hyuk grimaces worriedly when Secretary Gong can’t contact her, and so he reschedules the meeting.

Bong-soon races into the junkyard to find Minion with his blowtorch. The guy cheerfully asks if she’s looking for her friend but only giggles when Bong-soon demands to know where Jang-hyun is. Growing frantic, Bong-soon calls out Kyung-shim’s name and starts literally kicking cars left and right as she searches.

Her “search” catches Jang-hyun’s attention, and he watches her on the monitors in his lair. He actually looks worried for once, swearing as she gets closer and closer to his secret entrance. Bong-soon continues to fling cars until one of them hits the storage container, and the secret door swings open.

Min-hyuk gets back to his desk where his computer program has finished loading. It turns out to be a 3D scan of Jang-hyun’s junkyard, and we can clearly see the Dungeon of Doom below it. He immediately calls Bong-soon, but when the call goes straight to voicemail, he turns on the necklace tracker. He slams his phone down when he sees that she’s at that very junkyard by herself.

In the dungeon, Jang-hyun has donned his mask and unlocks Kyung-shim’s cell. He knocks her unconscious and carries her out the back entrance just as Bong-soon makes her way down to the cells.

The brides all cry out to Bong-soon, and she rushes forward to free them. They stare in amazement as the tiny girl starts ripping off their cell doors and snapping their chains.

Up above, Jang-hyun phones Minion and angrily yells at him to burn everything.

Bing-soon finishes freeing the brides as Minion douses the junkyard in what looks like kerosene. She runs around the cells looking for her Kyung-shim, but the ballet teacher bride tells her that the kidnapper just took her out.

Minion clumsily lights the fluid, grinning as the cars catch fire. Bong-soon starts to lead the way up the stairs when a huge explosion flings her back. As everything catches fire, Bong-soon throws herself over the huddling brides.

With fortuitous timing, Gook-doo is just making his way over to poke around the junkyard when he sees smoke from the fire.

Bong-soon manages to get the other women out by pushing flaming cars out of the way. As the women hobble away from their prison, Bong-soon runs over and yells at Minion to tell her where Jang-hyun took her friend. The guy is completely off his rocker (and most likely high from the drugs) and just stumbles off, sniggering.

Gook-doo arrives and tackles the man before he gapes to see Bong-soon and the other women. Soon the place is swarming with police and ambulances, and in all the confusion, Bong-soon slips away unnoticed.

As she walks out, Min-hyuk drives up and stops in front of her. It’s clear that he’s mad she left on her own, but he still opens the car door for her.

They go to a quieter spot, and Min-hyuk half-yells that he had said he would help her find Jang-hyun — together. Bong-soon apologizes, and Min-hyuk asks if she found Kyung-shim. Bong-soon can only shake her head, crying.

The police and forensics team go over the Dungeon of Doom, and Cap is infuriated to hear that the police chief told the special investigation team to work with them (essentially taking the credit when they did all the work).

Gook-doo yells down from above, having found Jang-hyun’s secret lair. They all stare at the sicko’s pictures and monitors, and Gook-doo slams his fist in anger to see Bong-soon’s pictures pinned in the bridal frames.

News breaks that the women have been found and that Jang-hyun has been officially named as the main suspect. The brides are taken to the hospital, and Cap visits the victims, sensitively asking how they got out during the explosion.

The next morning, Bong-soon listens to the news reports stating that Jang-hyun has escaped police custody and is still at large. It’s even worse when Mom comes in and tells Bong-soon to call Kyung-shim (who she believes is safe and sound in Busan) and tell her not to come up to Seoul while the criminal is running around.

Bong-soon meets with Gook-doo at the AinSoft cafe and reveals that Kyung-shim was taken, showing him the video. Gook-doo rages that she should have brought this to him earlier and tells her to stay out of it, but Bong-soon insists that she needs to do this alone. She says that Kyung-shim will be in more danger if the police get involved and begs him to help her without telling his team.

Min-hyuk walks by and sees the two of them talking, staring as Gook-doo comforts the crying Bong-soon. Gook-doo agrees to keep the investigation quiet and promises not to reveal who really saved those women from the dungeon.

Bong-soon and Gook-doo run right into Min-hyuk as they leave, and Min-hyuk angrily grabs her arm, pulling her to the library. Alone, Min-hyuk asks Bong-soon what he is to her. He says he knows that he can’t do much for her, he knows that she’s special, and he knows that he can’t stop her and shouldn’t stop her from going into danger alone. Now he wonders how much more he needs to “know.”

Bong-soon answers that she warned him from the beginning that she was different, but he cuts her off to say that he already knows she’s different. “But it drives me crazy, and I’m worried to death. It drives me crazy thinking about you going alone to confront that punk,” he adds.

She asks why he bothered to train her so hard then — didn’t he know she’d use the skills to fight? Min-hyuk yells, “I didn’t know! …I didn’t know I would love you this much.” (Ooof. It hurts so good.)

The two stare hopelessly at one another for a moment, then Bong-soon tightens her fist. With tears in her eyes, she says, “We cannot be together.”

Hardening her voice, Bong-soon states that dating is a luxury for someone like her. She needs to live as a monster, so he should live comfortably on his own, since they’re not fit for one another. She turns to leave, but Min-hyuk grabs her arm and jerks her back, “What did you just say?”

Bong-soon deadpans that they should just stop as they are now. Min-hyuk can’t believe it and asks incredulously if she thinks he’s that easy just because he likes her so much. In response, Bong-soon throws his arm off and walks away.

Min-hyuk yells after her, but she keeps going. He turns away furiously and doesn’t see that she’s stopped walking, and that she’s standing on the other side of the library bookcases and looking back towards him. They both think to themselves:

Bong-soon: “I too want to live like a normal person, but I cannot do that.”
Min-hyuk: “The person that I love, I do not want to lose again.”
Bong-soon: “If you are beside me, you will be in danger.”
Min-hyuk: “Can’t you just stay by my side?”

Bong-soon sheds a tear and walks away.

Gook-doo confides in Cap and tells him about Bong-soon’s strength. The older detective doesn’t believe it at first, but Gook-doo’s sincerity and the victims’ stories of a tiny woman ripping off their cell doors seems to convince him.

He takes it in stride and doesn’t see why Bong-soon’s strength would be such a bad thing for others to find out, but Gook-doo reveals that Jang-hyun also knows the truth. He gives him the real story of when Bong-soon saved Kyung-shim the first time, and that Jang-hyun has kidnapped Kyung-shim out of revenge.

Mom and her ladies are out strolling when they witness Dad walking with Gook-doo’s mom, Mi-hwa. Mom’s eyes look like they might pop out as she glares at the two, and Dad cowers in fear. Mom has a conniption and immediately starts beating her husband with an umbrella, but suddenly, Mi-hwa jumps in front of Dad.

Mom is even more infuriated that another woman is trying to protect her husband, but Mi-hwa stands firm that Dad has done nothing to deserve such a beating. (Aww, it’s nice to see someone stand up for him). Mi-hwa does eventually scamper away when Mom threatens to beat her instead, leaving Dad to run from his wife as she chases after him, umbrella swinging.

The police chief barges into the station room with a horde of press behind him, gushing about his amazing and dedicated team, like he hadn’t just threatened to fire them all mere days ago. Cap quickly calls an end to the charade, yelling that they still haven’t even caught the criminal before shooing the press out.

Gook-doo meets with the first of Jang-hyun’s victims, gently asking if she heard her captor say anything about where he was taking the last victim (Kyung-shim). The poor woman is still traumatized and can’t remember anything from then, but she does recall that whenever Jang-hyun would come into the dungeon, she’d hear the sound of a music box playing from outside.

Bong-ki treats another of the victims – the ballet teacher — with a detective from Gook-doo’s team standing by. The teacher asks what happened to the woman who saved them, calling her a pretty angel who disappeared like mist. Bong-ki listens in nervously as the detective incredulously asks, “A woman?”

Min-hyuk takes out his dating life frustrations on poor Secretary Gong, yelling at him about press releases and telling him to get out. He gives parting instructions to find out where Bong-soon is, and the chastised secretary skedaddles.

Bong-soon is currently hiding in a room at the office looking at pictures of her and Kyung-shim. Secretary Gong finds her and reports her location back to Min-hyuk. When the CEO dashes off, Secretary Gong wonders if the two of them had a fight.

Min-hyuk stands outside the door, looking in at Bong-soon and sighing that she probably hasn’t eaten.

Min-hyuk enters and quietly tells Bong-soon to go eat something. She wearily answers that she can’t eat when Kyung-shim probably hasn’t either and tells Min-hyuk not to worry about her as she leaves. He grabs her arm, pointing out that she needs to eat for her strength, but she says she’s strong enough without it. Bong-soon starts to tell him again not to worry about her, but he snaps, “Just try saying that one more time.” Why is that hot?

Taking a breath, Min-hyuk apologizes and says that this is all his fault, but Bong-soon replies he’s done nothing to be sorry for. Unable to take anymore and at a loss as to how to get through to her, he strides out, angrily calling back at her to starve if she wants — he’s going to stop caring.

But those are just big words as Min-hyuk sits at lunch, his untouched food growing cold in front of him. Awww, he starts looking up places that deliver spicy chicken feet – Bong-soon’s favorite food.

Gook-doo’s team tries to interrogate Minion, but they get nowhere. The guy is itching for another fix and just says that the police will never be able to catch his boss. Even Cap loses his patience and yells at the twitching junkie as he laughs maniacally. Like master, like minion?

Jaws (aka Shut Your Trap) visits the temple again, witnessing Nizamuddin doing… yoga? They head over to where Boss Tak is sleeping meditating, and he delivers his new life philosophy: “Life is a fist of poop.” He insists that life is short, and things like money and power mean nothing when they die.

At that moment, Jaws gets a phone call that their redevelopment project came through, and suddenly Boss Tak can’t run away from the temple fast enough, yelling excitedly about how much money they spent on that project. Pffft. Some enlightenment.

Jang-hyun does a disturbingly good job of laying low, even paying a stranger to purloin a cell phone for him so he can use that phone to call Bong-soon. He drawls that Bong-soon must be really strong to have gotten out of the dungeon, but Bong-soon just wants to know where Kyung-shim is. The creep sighs that because of her, he can’t get married now.

Bong-soon yells at him to stop harming others like a coward, but Jang-hyun just laughs. He asks if Bong-soon will marry him if he gives her friend back. She agrees, saying she’ll do whatever he wants as long as they meet. Jang-hyun nonchalantly sets the time for tonight and says he’ll text her the address. He gives her the parting comment, “Wear something pretty.”

After their failed interrogation, the police realize that Jang-hyun has been feeding Minion drugs for years to purposefully mess with the man’s psyche. Cap instructs his men to get a warrant prepared for Jang-hyun, since he has a feeling the bastard will come out tonight.

Min-hyuk once again wins best boyfriend (or is it ex-boyfriend?) of the year award as he quietly deposits a takeout bag of spicy chicken feet on Bong-soon’s playpen desk. He looks helplessly lost as he wonders where she’s gone.

After he leaves, Bong-soon comes in to leave a note on Min-hyuk’s desk. On her way out, she sees the bag of chicken feet.

Looks like Jang-hyun has been hiding out at an old brick house. While he sits on the nearby hillside, chuckling to himself, a terrified and tied up Kyung-shim huddles in a tiny closet.

Back at the office, Min-hyuk sees that the chicken feet are gone and finds the note on his desk from Bong-soon, saying that she’ll be absent for the day.

Bong-soon goes home and finds a note of her own in the chicken feet bag: It’s a pink heart note from Min-hyuk that reads, “No matter what you say or what you do, my heart does not change.”

Bong-soon paces in her room that night, ignoring a call from Gook-doo as she waits for Jang-hyun to send her the address of where to meet. The text from Jang-hyun eventually comes through, with a reminder to “look pretty.”

Bong-soon pulls up her hood and leaves. At the same time, Min-hyuk gets a notification from the necklace tracker that she’s on the move and runs out. He calls Gook-doo from his car and tells the detective that he thinks something happened to Bong-soon. He urges Gook-doo to come quickly, saying that he’s the only policeman he trusts.

Oh God, this is scary. Bong-soon arrives at empty construction site and calls out Kyung-shim’s name when suddenly, Jang-hyun’s voice rings out creepily over loudspeakers. He cackles that she did come looking pretty.

Bong-soon runs further into the site and finds Kyung-shim tied up on the ground, right below a construction elevator. Jang-hyun’s disembodied voice echoes out, “I’m coming down,” and the elevator starts to fall. As the madman’s laughter rings out, Bong-soon races forwards and catches the elevator right before it crushes Kyung-shim.

Bong-soon is stuck beneath the lift, Kyung-shim screaming and huddled next to her. She gives a mighty heave and tosses the elevator away. It lands in a heap and the door crashes open, with Jang-hyun’s unconscious, masked body rolling out of the cage. Wait, is he tied up? …Uh oh.

Bong-soon pries the gag out of Kyung-shims mouth, and as she helps her friend away, Kyung-shim frantically tells her that the person in the elevator isn’t the culprit. Bong-soon rushes over to the prone figure and pulls off the mask to reveal a duct taped and bleeding innocent bystander. Crap.

Kyung-shim cries out, and Bong-soon spins around to find Jang-hyun standing with an arm around her friend. She gets up, but suddenly she’s hit with a wave of dizziness. Bong-soon collapses to the ground and a cloud of black smoke leaves her body. At home, the secret cabinet and journals illuminate with bright light for a moment, until it’s snuffed out, black smoke rising from the Book of Strength as well. Noooo!

Bong-soon tries to stand and manages to take a trembling step forward, but it’s clear: Her strength is gone.

Jang-hyun sees this and punches a screaming Kyung-shim to the ground, then turns to the weakened Bong-soon, taunting her to save her friend. As Bong-soon shakily but determinedly approaches him, he raises a rifle and points it directly at her.

Bong-soon continues forwards and grabs the gun barrel. Jang-hyun looks nervous for a split second, that is, until Bong-soon can’t pull the gun away from him. He mocks her as she futilely tugs at the weapon, laughing that this is no fun.

Jang-hyun yanks her towards him, hauling her up by the front of her sweatshirt and jeering at her for being weak.

Ohthankgawd! Min-hyuk is here! He runs up, fire in his eyes as he yells at Jang-hyun to take his hands off Bong-soon. “If you lay one more finger on her, then you are really dead.”

Jang-hyun tosses Bong-soon away, and she falls to the ground, hard. I guess that counts as a finger, and Min-hyuk sprints forward. Jang-hyun raises the gun, but Min-hyuk knocks it away and then it becomes a full out brawl between the psycho kidnapper and badass CEO.

Both men are excellent fighters, and they trade kicks and punches while managing to glare at each other between hits. Min-hyuk gains the upper hand and injures Jang-hyun’ arm, but the kidnapper slides out of his grip and runs for a car.

Thankfully, Gook-doo arrives on the scene and fires off a warning shot as Jang-hyun dives into the vehicle. Detective and criminal have a staredown, and Min-hyuk sprints over to the fallen Bong-soon, gathering her into his arms.

Jang-hyun revs the engine — his car conveniently aimed at Gook-doo — and guns the car towards him. The detective gets a shot off, and we see Jang-hyun flinch away, crying out. Please tell me it was a fatal wound and this nightmare is over.

Min-hyuk holds the barely conscious Bong-soon in his arms, desperately telling her that everything is okay. Bong-soon gives a small whimper before her hand falls limp in his lap.

Shaking and crying, Min-hyuk calls out her name, but there’s no response. He clutches her even tighter as he rocks back and forth, letting out an anguished yell.

COMMENTS

Oh my heart! When he cried out like that! Like he’d just had his very soul ripped out of his chest. Guuh! And this was just after kicking some serious Jang-hyun butt. Normally I’m a fan of the damsel saving herself, but in this case, there was a legitimate reason for the girl to need a little backup. I won’t lie, I cheered out loud when Min-hyuk showed up to rescue his damsel, and it was great to finally see him use those fighting skills that he’s been boasting about on a normal (strength-wise) human. Up until now I’ve never really taken Min-hyuk’s character seriously in terms of physical strength or general badass-ness. He’s always been shown as either a cheeky goofball, a slightly effeminate sidekick to Bong-soon, or a heartthrob that can melt your soul with his eyes. It wasn’t until this episode when he constantly battled to stay on equal footing with the woman he loves, and then physically fought to save her, that I was reminded of how he’s actually a strong and formidable individual on his own.

Because of that, I was actually really happy with how the show brought about the conflict between Min-hyuk and Bong-soon. As much as I love the light and fluffy and their general adorableness, these are two strong-willed people, so it was only a matter of time until they butted heads. I was a bit frustrated with Bong-soon’s desire to do everything by herself, but I understand that she was terrified of Min-hyuk getting hurt. For someone who has always been strong, it’s easier for her to put everything on her own shoulders and push him away. Conversely, Min-hyuk’s reaction was to try and keep them closer together, doing things as a team instead. This was the first time that he refused to back down from Bong-soon, and I love that it was his fear for her safety that made him put his foot down. Unlike Bong-soon’s dad, Min-hyuk is an alpha in his own right, and he’s fighting so hard to keep them both on equal footing.

I was a little uncomfortable with the necklace tracker at first, since it seemed too possessive, but then I realized that it was Min-hyuk’s desperate attempt to keep Bong-soon safe. He knows that he couldn’t — and shouldn’t — hold her back, but at the same time, he sees how she was so determined to save Kyung-shim that she had blinders on to the rest of the world and couldn’t see the consequences of recklessly charging ahead. On top of that, Bong-soon is scared that someone else she loves could be hurt just for being around her, so she’s pushing Min-hyuk away. He could feel panicked that he wouldn’t be able to hold on to her, or protect her. I can really understand his frustration when he’s trying so hard to stay by her side and keep her safe even when she’s forcing distance. The tracker may have been a bit morally grey, but it was all he could think of.

As great as it was to see a strong Min-hyuk, I loved watching Bong-soon save those women. The fear that Jang-hyun showed when he saw her coming for him was just priceless. It was also beautiful how, even knowing that she was weak, Bong-soon didn’t shrink away and continued to try and save her friend. That moment gives me hope that even if her physical strength is gone, her strength of character is still there, and she can find a way to live on as Not-So-Strong-Woman, Do Bong-soon. I’m still crossing my fingers for a Hail Mary pass in the next three episodes that’ll bring her strength back. But until then, she has Min-hyuk there to remind her that she is special even without her gifts – to love her for who she is, not what she was and may never be again.

I definitely missed the cute and funny in this episode, but I also think it was necessary to move the plot forward.

-Did anyone else think the music in the big junkyard rescue scene was a little lighthearted? It kinda threw me off.

-I did feel like MH and BS’s big fight/breakup was a little contrived; I could see it coming but felt there could’ve been more buildup to it. BS did betray MH’s trust in a sense by rescuing the girls all alone, but he was surprisingly understanding (or at least as much as he reasonably could be), so I thought we were in the clear. When she broke things off, I could understand that she was afraid of him being hurt because of her but I was also upset with her for leaving someone she knows has been left behind by so many others. I was also slightly confused by all of MH’s back-and-forth on how he reacted, but it actually kinda makes sense – if he has some lasting emotional trauma from being abandoned as a child, it’s likely that he would react strongly to such a situation repeating itself. But even though he was dealing with all of that, the fact that he still ordered chicken feet for BS made me swooooooon.

-I feel like the actor playing Kim Jang-hyun is absolutely killing it in the role, especially in this episode. Is this his debut project? I couldn’t find much other info on him.

-While I feel like BS losing her strength could be a great place to go for plot and character development, the other part of me was screaming “NOOOOO!” I have to say, if she doesn’t regain her strength or still find a way to come out on top without being saved by our boys, the show and I will have words.

i agree, i didnt like the break up, not because they broke up for a minute but it just seemed like drama thrown in their for the sake of it rather then it actually being a legitimate issue that drove them apart. min hyuk was as swoon worthy as ever that's for sure.

as for the kidnapper, yeah this is his debut role, i did a bit of research on him cause he caught my attention, but his a model as well as kim woo bins best friend, his real name is jang mi kwan. for his first role his doing really well especially with pyscho character lol

I was really upset with Bong-soon this episode. How are you going to ask Min-hyuk for help but then do your own thing anyway? Come on girl. She barely gave the man a DAY. And then she decided to be all noble idiot too. -_-

I was rooting for this show because of how easily it flipped tropes like that! This is probably why I wasn't as invested in this episode...

I don't know if it was truly noble idiocy... I believe how invested she was in finding her friend and she literally could not focus on anything else. It was eating away at her and she felt like she couldn't deal or even eat. There was no way she was listening to reason when she put it all on herself to rescue her friend. It's consistent with her personality too... BS had originally felt like she should use her power to help the kidnapped "brides", how much more responsibility must she have felt when it became even more personal!

I get her wanting to save her friend and that being priority one but breaking things off when she barely even gave him a chance! She did ask for his help at the start of this very episode and the last time she spoke to Kyung-shim did she not say she now understands how worried Min-hyuk felt all the times she went off walking the streets alone? I just don't get why she lost her powers helping her friend, granted the guy she hurt wasn't the crook but she saved a life! I hope those ancient journals/granny can get her back to the Bong Soon we know.

Hmm... I did find it a little slow, even though significant things happened. But, I feel like the amount of things I didn't like and loved in this episode are balanced out.
-----------------------------------------------------
I must say... Park Hyung-Sik NEVER fails to amaze me these days. His eye-acting is top-notch. I really can't wait to see more of his projects, and I hope he stops being type-cast as a chaebol.

Anyways,

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE:
- Those Baek Tak& co. filler scenes. Honestly, what's the point of those now? And the high school students at the cafe AGAIN? It's not funny anymore. They've beaten this horse to death, enough already!
- The casual domestic violence that this show keeps throwing around. It's not funny. Are they trying to make a point that we're not yet onto? (doesn't seem like it)
- That Min-Bong voice-over after their argument. I hated it, because I think the writer was overdoing it with the cheesiness. WTF was that? Seemed like something that's more appropriate for a melo.
- That noble idiocy card pulled by DBS... c’mon girl you were barely starting the relationship! I understand her reasons but still...Dramaland needs to stop with these.
- That last scene where Gyeong Shim is totally ignored. Excuse me, but wasn't the entire point of this episode to save Gyeong Shim? She's finally saved, but they leave her lying on the ground like a rag doll? I get that DBS is important, but maybe the camera should have fixed on both of them in the last scene, instead of MH holding DBS? (Am I the only one frustrated with this?)
- The ambiguity surrounding DBS's loss of powers. Why did she lose her powers at EXACTLY that moment? I'm also not buying the "because she hurt an innocent person", since she hurt secretary Gong pretty bad and nothing happened. This seems like it was done purely to fit the the plot and have the two guys save her while at it. Seriously, for a drama that boasts of challenging gender norms/roles, it should make better use of her strength.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
WHAT I LOVED:
- DBS fully embracing her powers and saving those girls like the badass that she is. Need I mention without the help of anyone? (even though it was kinda reckless)
- Their argument in the library. Honestly, that was epic! I loved the DIALOGUE. "Am I easy to you, because I'm violently in love with you?" HA! It also reminded me of their crooked heart on the beach and how someone commented that it could be a symbolism of how no relationship/love is perfect. I totally linked it with this fight, hehe. But my heart broke for MH after he so shamelessly confessed his love, and DBS just...... crushed him.
- MH's little acts of love despite being in a fight i.e him worrying about her well-being and buying her food. And that cute note. I love that he's not willing to back down, just because DBS said so...

She gave him a few hours overnight, LOL!
And then I don't blame MH for getting angry because then she went to GD and pleaded with him to keep things a secret - essentially asking him for help. I can understand how frustrated MH must have been. He just wanted to help her and keep her safe, but she went ahead and did everything by herself, even though he'd repeatedly told her he would help her.

Silly girl, again being impulsive. The thing is: even though she loves him, she is not used to think of them as a couple, she is not used to count on him as an equal part of herself, and when going into the danger, as CC said, she left him out, also because of not wanting him to get hurt.
Anyway... by seeing the forwards we know they are still dating, totally in love with each other. At least that.

I wish someone at JTBC gave the writer a good shake and handed her a primer on proper narrative pacing. Because there is material here to make this drama much more winsome, but it's like the writer is purposefully sabotaging her own show with illogical decisions about narrative direction and flow. Like does anyone here know the point of that gangster and monk side plot thing? I haven't a clue because I stopped watching those scenes episodes ago. Also the "are you cheating on me with Gook Do's mother" thing is so irritating and problematic (of the spousal abuse variety). Episode 13 had great potential for suspense ... if the writer would only *commit* to it. But instead she chose to chop up all the developments for pseudo-comic side stuff that wasn't funny or entertaining, and instead made the story tonally uneven.

The bottom line is that no one in the universe is even pretending to watch this show for anything but OTP. The writer's could have done wonders by trimming out the irrelevant side plots, and better developed the relationship tensions hinted at this episode. Because I do think they are legit and interesting knots that OTP needs to work out.

We know from Min Hyuk's backstory that he's got traumatic abandonment/attachment issues. This has been manifesting in the recent episodes when he literally does not want Bong Soon out of his sight. Like the possibility of loosing her in the same way he lost his mother (that is, gone and hopelessly irrecoverable) is worse than death itself. On the poignant side, this means he's willing to lay down his life for her. On the dark side, this means he might potentially be stifling and possessive. Boon Soon's issues on the other hand run somewhat counter to Min Hyuk's instincts: after spending much of her life hiding her power from the world, what she hopes above all is to act instead of avoid, to protect instead of harm -- essentially to forge her own place in the world and earn a measure of independence. So the fact that her needs would come in conflict with his needs is not at all surprising to me, and imo an organic source of tension for the narrative. But instead of developing it at a pace that makes sense, the writer packed it all in the space of like 24 hours ("she wants his help! nope she doesn't. now she wants him out of the way. wait they're breaking up??"), which is rather badly done.

I totally think Bong-soon was fine going it alone. This show flips the tropes. When have you seen a man ask the woman for help? Plus, Bong-soon knows she is strong and capable. One thing I love about her is she really cares about protecting others, so doesn't want to put them at risk. The only thing on her mind since her friend was kidnapped was rescuing her, so she went about that with an amazing confidence, strength, and resolve. She wasn't worried about herself, only her friend. She didn't have the space to worry about Min-hyuk and wanted to protect him. Think of all those shows where the guy asks the woman to stay away so he doesn't have to worry about protecting her while he gets the bad guy. This is no different.

I must admit I would have preferred it if Bong-soon had grabbed the gun and wrapped it around the killer, but I am ok with seeing how she deals with no powers. The way this played out did sort of work for me. Especially since she had rescued the other ladies so beautifully. Loved how she just yanked the jail doors off.
I love Bong-soon, the actress is amazing in this role.

I understand the "independent strong woman" part and agree. She is more than capable of handling it by herself and, honestly, worrying about your new boyfriend's feelings with your LONG-TIME friend (cousin?) has been kidnapped is the LEAST of your worry.

however, would it have killed her to spare him a thought and just TELL him she's going in? This is not limited to MH, by the way. I was very surprised that her own family didn't kick up more of a fuss over what he got involved with.

She doesn't NEED his help, but maybe it would have been nice to inform him of her current status, if she cared.

It's as simple as IRON MAN telling Piper (his girl) "hey babe. I'm off to save the world again. See you at dinner"

LOL

This episode didn't pull on my heartstrings like I hoped it would. People on viki were in the comments crying and I just kept thinking the show was losing steam. I wish we could've gone back to the storyline with Min Hyuk's family. I loved watching Bong Soon force them to act like humans. I still love the show flaws included I just wish for more umph at the end. Sidenote I think I love this kdrama because of how similar it is to weightlifting fairy.

I agree the show has been losing steam for a few episodes now. It seems that the writer is unable to bring all the different story lines into a cohesive plot. Even the angst feels manufactured somehow. I don't know. I don't feel connected on an emotional level to the episode at all.

I think it's unfortunate that they had about 4 filler episodes and THEN this one. If this had happened last week, it would've had more impact. Oh and if we got rid of the gangs and random monk and high schoolers, and made the story writing snappier, it'd pack more of a punch too.

This show has one of my favorite couples of all time, but I had a really hard time with this episode. I needed to go back and watch that perfectly-lopsided-all-kinds-of-lovely heart on the beach scene a couple times to make myself feel better.

I mean, what happened? How could DBS lose her strength like that? Based on a misunderstanding? It definitely threw me for a loop: If I understand correctly, she lost her strength because she hurt an innocent person...but she hurt that person indirectly, and on accident. She didn't know it was an innocent person; she assumed it was the villain. And if she had not intervened, a different innocent person would have been killed. It seems like her power prefers one innocent person over another. Am I missing something really obvious?

13

Required fields are marked *

I don't think you're missing anything. I think that the writers wanted the next conflict for Do Bong Soon to be her losing her strength but they didn't execute it well. For example if a little after they found out who was terrorizing Min Hyuk she lost her strength they could've built up to the conflict of her closest friend getting kidnapped again. I feel like they just needed more time to fully get us as viewers to believe it. For me it just seems like they needed to check her losing her powers off a list.

4

Required fields are marked *

I think even though it was an accident, Bong-soon did have an intention to hurt that person (because she assumed he was the villain). And that intention make all the difference, that's why she lost her strength.

At least that's how I interpreted it. After all, the writer never really make the rules clear.

Yeah, I kinda wondered about that...I mean, I wondered if that was what the writer's wanted us to believe (that intention matters). But once you bring intention into the picture, doesn't that make the issue even more complicated? I mean, her intention was to hurt a villain, and her intention was to save an innocent person. I don't know. I'm just not convinced. But like you say, the writers never made the rules clear (and like other people have said: it seems like the writers may have just written themselves into a corner and sought any possible way to strip her strength and move the story on.) Oh well. Hopefully the cute will be back ASAP.

0

Required fields are marked *

I get that she did have the intention to hurt the person because she thought it was KJH... but that seems like such a forced way to enforce a rule. If you intentionally hurt someone while protecting an innocent that the latter was trying to harm... are you wrong, or are you not? I guess since the writers never made the rule clear, it's all grey area for them to work with, but that's pretty meh for me. Especially because BS's mum lost her powers while bullying others for her own benefit.

It is obviously bad writing. In a fantasy world, your duty as a writer is to makes things clear so that viewers can understand.
And being after that able to surprise them by bringing a coherent but understandable solution to a conflict is genius.

I have always thought that it was the gods punishment for being selfish with the powers they gave. But she has injured countless bad guys and her powers remained intact. If the intention is to save someone innocent and she hurts who she presumed to be the villain then why did the gods take away her power?

At the end of the day, she was doing what she believed would save her friend. But then again, the gods are pretty cruel.

My guess is that the powers were meant to protect the innocent rather than to eliminate the evil. This means the superhero has to exercise greater responsibility in executing his or her powers.

Borrowing from Luke 12:48 But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked....

In other words, the one who has been gifted with more powers would have meet higher expectations. While DBS certainly did not have any intent to hurt an innocent person and given the urgent circumstances, there's definitely no way she could save KS without plunging the lift, hurting the innocent guy accidentally. I am not sure why she lost her power this time versus the time she accidentally caused harm to the secretary. Perhaps the difference is that the secretary was an active participant competing on strength as opposed to the innocent hostage.

It's the same concept they apply to people in the police and army force where they have to take responsibility for the innocent lives who ended up as casualties while having a showdown with the criminals.

Taking away her powers is to reinforce the need for greater care when it comes to using excessive force. Even though it was with no intent, hurting an innocent person still involved a certain penalty and in this case, DBS suffered the consequences of her actions. However I hope her powers would be restored ....

i thinks its like "with great power comes great responsibility", like you use your powers to help but have to be responsible in how you use it or else innocent people can hurt where otherwise they might not have. like collateral damage.. captain america civil war or batman vs superman anyone. maybe its you cant be reckless in the way you help, like you help one innocent person but also hurt another because you weren't thinking who now is seriously injured or dead and maybe if you didnt get involved they would be fine

I find it interesting that you quoted the Bible. I am also a Bible student, and that scripture says a lot.
For instance, in the case of BS, I was expecting her to lose part of her powers when hurting that innocent man, but not ALL of them.
The show made it look like that at the beginning when saying that her grandmother got diarrea by doing I don't remember what wrong thing, but it was just a "small" punishment. It should be written somewhere in the books BS also didn't read.
if she would have lost part of her powers, she could still have beaten the kidnapper in that moment.
But the way they made her lose her power was bad writing and a bad execution.

I'm sad that even the amazing couple can't really save the drama for me anymore.

I was confused...annoyed is more accurate by the way she lost her strength as well. Her mom had been going around beating people up and taking their money for awhile before she lost her strength. Bong-soon is trying to save yet another victim from a monster and her strength is taken while BOTH of them are still in danger.
The dungeon, the fear, the begging and pleading for their lives... it's too much. It's too dark.

I think he understood that he realized his feelings too late, and she didn't lead him on - told him straight out that she would like it if they remained friends. I think if GD had pushed ahead and kept trying for her, we would have a lot more "filler" scenes and an even draggier plot. I'm glad we don't have that, especially since she spent enough episodes hung up over him!

Yes! For a show that's been otherwise quite unrealistic, I really appreciate how healthy the relationships in it are. Aside from Mom and Dad's (I mean, I honestly think they're just portrayed as a typical bickering couple, despite the physical violence which causes a lot of issues that the writer seems to have overlooked), HJ and GD's relationship had a pretty nice closure to it, and then HJ and BK's budding relationship started well too (with her accepting that they needed to wait etc) - though she seems to have faded into nothingness now that she has served her plot purpose. Can't say that I miss her! But most of all, MH and BS's relationship has been amazing so far, and I'm so glad that GD was mature enough to not let his feelings get into the way of a very long friendship.

2

I am glad GD is mature enough to know when to push for a relationship and when to stop because I have enough of clingy pathetic second leads who keep pushing for a relationship just because of their feelings for the female leads. They expect their feelings to be reciprocated somehow. At least, BS is clear on her feelings for him, and he respects her enough not to force his feelings on her.

This episode was one of the weaker episodes, because it didn't have a lot of MH/BS scenes, and the fight between them felt a little contrived. However the good news is that ep 14 is much better (but I can't discuss it here). All I will say is that I hope that in the end BS gets her power conditionally, what I mean by that is that she lives as a normal human girl, but when she gets stuck in a desparate situation her power would come back temporarily. I think that would be better than her losing and getting her power back without any explanation.

In this way, her losing her power will have a lasting effect, and also it will allow her to lead a normal life with MH. I'm thinking about when they get passionate with each other, it would suck if she had to always be careful with her strength. Anyways I am thinking too far ahead now, and I look forward to see what twists this show throws at us, in its last two eps. All I know is that I want more MH/BS lovey-dovey and also some passionate scenes.

- Ok firstly, I think the best thing this scriptwriter ever wrote into this show was Minhyuk. (In those ripped jeans, yes. I won't complain if we get more MH in ripped jeans.) She told him she wanted to break up, and he apologized first, and even when she told him to stop caring about her, he bought her favourite spicy chicken because he was worried that she wasn't eating. It's so normal for main leads to just do nothing, brood handsomely and fume over the ridiculous actions of the girl.

We might need to change the title of this show to "Perfect Man Min Hyuk".

- Secondly, I thought we were over this noble idiocy thing, BS! I don't like noble idiocy cliches, with the whole "you'll get hurt if you're with me, so I'm going to just throw hurtful words your way and make you stop loving me (as though that ever worked)". But I can't even blame her for wanting to be a noble idiot, because how do you get annoyed with good intentions, even if they're executed poorly? Also, regarding the necklace tracker, boy am I glad that MH gave it to her and that she wore it without complaint (did she perhaps guess?). She has a tendency to not think and run straight into danger and that was the only way he could think of to make sure he knew where she was. Thank goodness for that.

- Also, I'm a little iffy about her losing her powers while trying to protect KS. It seems like such an... easy way for the writer to make her lose her powers. Harm innocent person? Powers gone? Check, and check. The thing is, I'm sure BS has unintentionally hurt others with no consequences. Here, she was trying to save an innocent person from being smashed by a falling metal block. Obviously she threw the metal lift aside because she thought KJH was on it, but the point is, she didn't intentionally harm anybody. So the idea of her losing her powers like that doesn't sit quite right with me. It seems like just a quick and easy device to make her lose them so that the show can progress. But I'll acknowledge that it was a smart move, from the criminal's POV.

- More gangsters, more monk, more filler scenes. At least Dad is growing a backbone. I feel like I sat through an hour's show of angst and anxiety just waiting for the last 5 minutes of action to happen. It also makes me wonder if I only liked this show because of the cute.

Ooh, I love his angry/focused expressions! Him in ripped jeans and white shirt <3 The angst was so good this episode, I really felt his worry for her and it was all so legitimate too, not him being possessive or controlling, just honestly wanting to be a team with her and take out the bad guys.

lmfao a kdrama hero's average day: look fabulous, run a company, protect girl from death and destruction, look really hot while suffering/brooding over the latest relationship angst.

We need a fangirl praise band for Min Hyuk's stylist/coordi, because day-um every time he shows up with yet another beautiful outfit I'm wrecked. You can tell his stylist has the greatest aesthetic admiration for those loooong legs. *heart eyes*

All your rants +1. But I didn't think BS said those words just to hurt MH. It looked like she was having too much on her plate and just could not handle such a big confession at that time. I loved how much it hurt her to walk away too. I really wish these two have something more meatier and emotional to work with - they will knock it out of the park.

And yes, I have known this since episode 6, that I love the show only for the leads. I have skipped 90% of detective scenes, 100% of mom-dad scenes and 100% of high school/gangster scenes. I just dont care for any of them. I have stopped expecting plot/logic anything from the writer. The lead actors are this drama's saving grace and its what am in love with.

<> Though the writer/director/editor managed to wreck even their heartfelt acting in next episode end! I mean I dont even know which genius got that ridiculous idea and worse, who approved it!!!

I'd originally also thought BS said those harsh words because she just couldn't handle everything (we do say things like that when we're in state of stress) but as she walked away the voiceover said that "you'll only get hurt if you stay with me", so I held some hopes that she was just being a noble idiot, haha! Either way, I think it did hurt her to say those, but I wish their conflict had had a better resolution (but I'll rant more about that in E14's recap of course. That ending as well!).

Honestly my usual behaviour for dramas with scenes that I start skipping is to just drop them altogether. But how is it that for all of Hyungsik's shows I end up staying just for his scenes? Heh.

Yeah there is hint of idiocy there as well. And on their conflict, I kinda wished they stretched that a little more. I love when they clash with each other. It kind of brings in their intense emotions out. I just wish writing is better to do it justice.

Am really glad this drama has been such a hit for Hyung Shik. He really deserves all of it and more. He is just a great actor through and through - and does not hurt that he is extremely hot. Whatever character he plays, it just resonates with me. I even dig his chaebol character in High Society despite it being such a snoozefest drama. I dont think anyone could have brought such dynamics to a very brooding stereotypical kdrama character!

I am gonna miss him soooooo muchhhhh when this drama ends!!!!!!!!!!!!

I must admit that I dig all his characters, especially in High Society, hehe. I caught snippets of him as Cha Dal Bong in WHTMF, and thought he was adorable there too. I just want him to get into another drama quickly so that I have more of him to watch!

Actually, I'm just sort of a little glad that they didn't fight for too long, but that's just my personal preference - I would rather the cute than the angsty any day, especially since cute is one of the main reasons why I'm still watching this show!

2

True. WHTMF is a really heartwarming show. I started for PHS and stayed for all the characters. He had such a cute love story there.
you are right on that, cute is the only thing that is saving this show. I mean I should probably get tired of all the heart lights behind our couple(cuz its too cheesy) but they are just sooo damnn cute.

In my case, I know: I only like this show because of the cute. And everything, EVERYTHING MH does.
Now to your comment: I am upset with the writer because it turned predictable. It would have been way more interesting and surprisingly that she didn't lose her powers, and smile at the kidnapper and tell him: did you really think I would lose my powers? (Come on, she knew he also knew about the jinx), and then comes a scene when we see her reading the books, and then she would kick his ass very well, like at the beginning with the gansters. And that plot line was over. GD comes to arrest him, she and MH take care of the victims, and the next 3 chapters left would be more cute, family issues, and more cute.

But no. I won't spoil but already watch the chapter 14, and it is not that. I am upset with you, show!

Hah, that would be a pretty good twist! Score 1 for BS, 0 for kidnapper. Still, I guess it was pretty obvious that the writer would turn it predictable, especially with the whole setup of her telling "KS(kidnapper)" that she would lose her powers if she harmed the innocent.

I guess they wanted to pull this storyline out for longer, instead of having 2 episodes of wrapping up.

I have seen the latest episode but these are my thoughts for this episode~

Despite the tracking device being a little sneaky and maybe a breach of privacy, Min Hyuk has only used that necklace to find her when he thought she was in trouble we didn't see him use it for any other circumstances so I guess it is better than say him using it every time he felt like it to keep a check on her. He only used it for protecting her because like you said CandidClown it may have been uncomfortable situation if he had actually used it for more minor things but I think it is nice that he only used it in that moment. And I think we are all really really glad he had it at that moment

Also there is no way that she will lose her powers. I am sure the show will think of a way to bring it back and I hope it will be sooner rather than later. Because I feel like Bong Soon isn't really Bong Soon without that adorable ability to use her strength that way.

Anywho can't wait for your next recap cause I have so much I wanna say that I can't right now in this recap XD So I will wait till you guys publish the next one!

Hmm true. Under normal circumstances, such a device would not be justifiable, but with the premise and circumstances in this show, I didn't even question Min-hyuk doing that. In addition to circumstances, I think it also comes down to the fact that based on what we know of Min-hyuk, he's unlikely to abuse his power over this device. As someone who is extremely cautious and open-minded, I sort of trusted this guy with this device from the get-go.

I think - especially because it's MH, we'll just call it "being concerned" instead of "creepy". Thank goodness he thought ahead of putting a tracker on her, because he knew she would take the first opportunity to run straight into danger. As viewers, I think we sort of know that he would never use it to "check up" on her because of a lack of trust or anything. Maybe that's why BS put on the necklace so willingly when he told her it would protect her - it didn't seem like an appropriate scenario for a guy to be giving a girl a necklace randomly.

The edits between the cute, happy scenes vs. the darker and scarier scenes are still a bit jarring to me, and the side story with Baek Tak & his gang is more annoying than funny imo (maybe it's because I'd prefer more scenes with Bong-Bong and Min-Min hehe).

I do completely agree with your point about the tracking device on Bong-soon's neckless--kind of stepping boundaries but at the same time, Bong-soon is trying to do everything else. I hope that she'll learn to accept his help in future episodes and learn to work together as a team. (:

The one thing that's bugging me is the reason behind her losing her power: yes, it was an innocent person but it wasn't intentional. Bong-soon has hurt "innocent" people before (like Secretary Gong and Min-hyuk--granted, they were egging her on). Either way, I hope she gains her power back and take down Kim Jang-hyun because he's really giving me the creeps as the drama goes on. But I have to give it to the show--they're doing a really good job with building up the suspense. :O

As always, thanks so much for the recaps!

That's the biggest problem with this show in my opinion. For me they were never able to mesh the two vastly different tones together. I just can't bring myself to enjoy the cute/light scenes as much as I want to when just seconds ago we see those women being tortured and beaten in a dark/violent manner. Plus I agree with the side storys taking away from the show by now. They even went further into the Bong-soon's Mom/Dad and Mi-Hwa story which I find absolutely boring. The most disappointing about all of this is that the show had so much more potential. Some shows are just plain bad and I don't even bother watching them. SWDBS on the other hand could've been one of my favorites. I hope that they get the last episodes right and rely properly on their strenghts.

Hi, beanies...I'm YY, minus the caps.

This was a weird episode for me.

1. That fight between MH and BS - I don't get why MH would get riled up over BS saying he's done nothing to be sorry for? Why does he suddenly get mad and yell "You can starve if you want!" Huh? SO so weird, so so un-MH...I was expecting his response to be a hug!

2. The mother abuses the father again...urgh.

3. The faceoff between GD and the psycho was so ridiculous...he let him get into the car and drive off!! It took GD forever to pull that trigger, and he couldn't even aim straight! And he was standing RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM!!!!! Why didn't he shoot the tyres flat, to begin with?

4. I fastforwarded the temple and gangsters scene...I think I caught a glimpse of the poop bottle in the process...please tell me I imagined it.

I can't even tell you whether you imagined it because I skipped those too, hah! I have 2 Korean tests coming up this week and didn't have the time or patience to sit around watching them.

My thoughts exactly! Did GD think that pointing a gun at him would make him stop ramming the accelerator at him? (I assume that's why he took so long to pull the trigger). I guess if he didn't take so long, KJH would have gotten caught by him, and then we would have no more criminal plot in the show.

because the way bongsoon said it is not really sincere- it's more in a passive-aggressive way to push him further away. it means he's not actually getting through to her. it's just how she said "sorry" when he scolded her for being reckless for going alone, yet in the next breath she did it again

One of the things in this episode that made me annoyed with her was that she just... apologizes to him and that's about it. She'll apologize just to get the matter over with, but she knows that the next time it happens, she'll do it without anyway. And he knows it, and is scared by it.

I mean I adore the show every time our main three are on view - or interacting - but I'm totally OVER the ridiculous filler of that comedian playing a Yoga-monk or whatever he/it is. It's distracting to have something so blatantly disconnected from the important main story...and that mother of hers!!!! How can the writer make us dislike her so much by making her such a bully? This peripheral stuff feels like filler to me; unnecessary filler and it's become completely annoying.

Thank you for the recap CandidClown. I was pretty upset for two days after watching this at Bong Soon for taking all of this burden upon herself and doing everything alone, but reading CandidClown's comments made me realize its only natural for her to do so. If I think about it now, most superhero stories depict heros trying to carry the weight of the world upon their shoulders until they realize they need their friends and genius sidekicks around to succeed at the end of the day. I watch a lot of superhero stuff and I knew this at the back of my head. But I guess my frustration again boils down to having such weak heroines in our favorite dramas when it seems like all of the men (beautiful and intelligent) often surpass competence and sometimes reach genius. And on top of that this was like, the climax during the second to last week of episodes, you know? Like we've waited 13 episodes (forever) for Bong-soon-ah to confront the psycho and when it happened, it happened through a series of thoughtless and overemotional mishaps on Bong-soon's end despite all of the warnings. Gahh.

Also, how unfair is it that Bong-soon lost her powers in this crucial moment!? As reckless as I found her to be, I definitely did not think she deserved to lose her powers. Poor Bong-soon-ah. I saw it coming, but was hoping her loss of powers would result from something that acutally made sense. I mean, throwing the elevator that was about to kill Kyung-shim and herself which happened to have a person inside was sort of an accident, right? It simply didn't make sense in light of the fact that Bong-soon had exerted her strength in questionable means before (punching people too hard, knocking out teeth, filling a hospital with her victims) and not have her power suffer as a result but suddenly have it taken away at this moment. Gahh. At least explain to us, like tell us its due to some set rule noted down in those historical records Bong-soon had had passed onto her. Ohh, how I wish I could rewrite this show with all of its perfect potential.

It's unfortunate that what was once a drama I obsessed over became so draggy and pointless. I don't even know what the purpose of the plot is anymore. I wish the story focuses more on Bong Soon and her character development as her power was more enhanced and trained by Min Hyuk. I wish her power was more shown in saving the day rather than constantly fighting off the same gang and Kim Jang Hyun or showing off her power such as bullying Kim Won Hee's doppleganger at work. I don't think the writer knew how to actually flesh out his awesome characters that well. Bong Soon's training with Min Hyuk served totally no purpose at all once they were done and that totally pissed me off cuz we could have had episodes to showcase how much she has improved from her training. And now the story doesn't even make sense anymore. -__-

I wish there was some consistency in the writing and that all the characters introduced actually had purpose in the story. I can't believe I can't even squeal with every Min Hyuk and Bong Soon's moment cuz I most of the time spent it being pissed off at where the story is going. Now she's totally lost her power over that? I would have preferred it if she had to choose to hurt somebody innocent to save her best friend and lose her powers - like, that makes sense. But losing powers over accidentally hurting somebody randomly? She didn't even know someone was on there. Like, what happened to the writing here? So frustrating that this show went down the hill and I was soooooooo crazy about this drama (I still do though for the couple).

Anyways to all Park-Park couple fans out there, please kindly participate in the survey for the Director's Cut DVD/Blu-Ray form.office.naver.com/form/responseView.cmd?formkey=MTI2ZDU3YTctOTM3Zi00OTBmLWJlNDYtNTY4MjlkOGY1MDU0&sourceId=urlshare Their cafe is cafe.daum.net/dobongsoondvd/f2Lt/1

Even if the story has gone down the hill now, Park-Park couple is really hard carrying this drama and that is really the main reason now why I want to get a physical copy of this drama - so that I can fangirl over their BTS, NG, and hopefully couple commentary. I still do love and adore the couple.

I think the writer has too much on her hands, and she can't bring them together into a cohesive story line, resulting in a chaotic episode and underdevelopment of her characters. I don't know why the writer doesn't want to do away with the mom-dad and gangster scenes and focus on the kidnapper and BS instead. Complete that arc, then we can have the last two episodes focusing on the rest of the characters.

i agree, i feel minhyuk character is written well but bong soon, i wish the writer focused on more on, as it would have been great if they created this weird relationship between her and the kidnapper without actually truly meeting until the end point, like some criminal shows do by making her being more involved in the thriller part of the show. also giving us more insight to the kidnapper. i wanted a better character arc for bong soon tbh.

Hello beanies!
As for this episode:
it was the one I liked the less, because of the usual: inept police, the criminal smarter than everybody else, BS breaking up in their first fight, although I understand she was under lots of stress, and too much of stupid ganster's that we don't care.
That being said, I liked your comments on MH's behavior, CC. It makes me appreciate him way more.
For, as usual, PHZ is saving the day, and I love him to death.

Back to this, this episode was a little slow and the defendants in the gangsters and the monks have overstayed their welcome. This episode was hard to watch, I didn't like how Bong-soon kept trying to push Min-hyuk away when he was trying to help her, it's the worst feeling ever when you try to protect a loved one but you can't because they won't let you. I was glad Min-hyuk used the tracking device to find her, I can't imagine what would've happened if he was late.

Now that she lost her powers, will she ever get them back? She was trying to help her friend and she didn't know it wasn't Kim Jang-young, she didn't hurt an innocent man because she wanted to, should the rule apply here?

Let me comment about the bad guy Kim JangHyun. In the beginning of the series, I never thought that he would really be the main antagonist of the drama. I thought that there would be more villains that will challenge BongSoon. As for his role, he is more intelligent than those bunch of police officers. Obviously, he is a genious good-looking psycho. It made me curious how he ended up that way. I wanted to know his background story. I want to dig deeper on how he became an obsessed and insecure guy. Or did I miss a scene on his story? All i know is that he watched that theatrical play several times. But why? He can actually play as detective in his next drama. Villains could be interesting on their own ways. The charismatic villain just stole the hearts of a lot of ladies. Well, he's a new actor in the drama universe to watch out for.

I don't think we will be given a back story on the villain except the sketchy one we were given in the episode. There is just not enough time for it. We are still dividing the episode among BS's mom and dad, gangsters, MH-BS's love line, the cops and the kidnapper, resulting in a rather disjointed episode.

tbh i wanted some insight to the kidnapper as well, its like why is he doing this, was he made into this, was he just always like this, why the seven brides thing, it would be better then the filler scenes and you could contrast it with minhyuks background and bong soons, cause they had a difficult home life as well, create a pseudo relationship with bong soon and kim jang hyun while contrasting that with the actual relationship with minhyuk and bong soon. have this cat and mouse game and have supporting characters that add something to the story of development to the main characters.

There were only two things I liked in this episode:
1. The kidnapped ladies were finally saved,
2. A very-quiet-and-super-angry-but-relieved Min-hyuk in jeans, white shirt, and a jacket is Y.U.M.M.Y...

Other than that, I didn't like this episode. I didn't get why BS seemed upset at MH. What was wrong about him worrying for her safety? He didn't even ask her to not help her friend. He only asked that she doesn't go alone to a dangerous place/situation.

Why did she also intend to break up , thinking that she could put him in danger? Since when did she have this thought? Even in this circumstance, she didnt seem to think nor worry about MH's safety, nor her own family's.

Then I didn't get why she lost her power. She might have had some bad intention but she did believe the villain was in that cabin. Why didn't she lose her power when she used her strength with her manager (perhaps it was justified because he was bullying her)?

I thought the manner in which she lost her power was iffy. Like it's so convenient. She hurt a lot of people unintentionally in the past, and she didn't even suffer some minor consequences for them. And because she hurt this innocent, she immediately loses her power? It feels so unbelievable, especially when she doesn't know the person is an innocent at all?

Yeah, I think it just suited the plot to have her lose her power at that point, so it gives Jang-hyun the chance to escape and continue wreaking havoc. Bong-soon doesn't have any major enemies other than Jang-hyun and if he's taken out too easily by Min-hyuk, then there won't be enough story to last for the next three episodes (especially since Min-hyuk looks to be the next victim).

I really wish Bong-soon read her grandmother's books earlier. There might have been something in there that could have helped her.

Just like several Beanies, i don't really enjoy this eps. The editing, the flow of the story and the filler were not as enjoyable as the previous eps. Especially the mafia turned monk, HS gang and incapacitated gangsters at the hospital scenes are simply.... *sigh*

I do hope the groove is back in the next eps till end.

Thanks for the recap, CandidClown!

I love this show as a whole, but the editing this episode was really choppy. I couldn't understand why the monk and mob gangsters kept appearing. I understand the need for comedy but how's one to enjoy comedy when there's so much tension going on?!

*Calms Down*

Bong-soon's lost her super strength, but I think that's temporary. She'll be up again for sure. Min-hyuk's internal struggle - gosh what can I say. When he said "I didn't know I'd love you this much", I was a goner...

That's right. MH's family and BK and HJ's love arc are already done away with these few episodes, why are the gangsters still appearing in every episode? Does the writer think they are that funny that can ease the tension in the show or what? I prefer focusing on the leads' relationship of the kidnapper. I want the kidnapper caught, so I can enjoy the lovey dovey moments between our leads.

When both of them wanted to spare each other of the imminent danger that was bound to happen by stopping each other and eventually trying to be the noble idiot. (Bong Soon by telling Min Hyuk not to care about what she wants to do and Min Hyuk trying to stop Bong Soon doing things all on her own.)

On a side note, thank God for that tracking device though, Min Hyuk saved Bong Soon at the right moment when Bong Soon lost her strength, earning both of them their own hero moments.

this ep was much better then the last one, however i feel like the gangsters, high schoolers and the mother/her friends/ are quite unnecessary well especially the first two. i though park bo young was great in the ep, her emotional acting always gets me

i have to say i really like the actor who plays the kidnapper jang mi kwan, his new to the acting scene, but his really good and his really good looking. it took me by surprise and now im gonna be looking out for him more in the future.

I too have felt for some time that the side characters and stories should have been left out altogether, since they have not added anything important to the plot and are not likely to now. I'd hoped at first that the kids' gang might have taken Bong Soon's advice to heart and improved themselves or that the grown-up thugs had gotten themselves out of hospital sooner and having gained respect for Bong Soon could be her back-up in her encounter with Jang Hyun. However, all that did not come to pass, therefore the point of Bong Soon ever being in their lives is lost.

I estimate that without most of the side stories, we could have had a rollicking suspenseful crime-cum-melty love story within 12 episodes.

Hi @siesta

Yes, the minions could have been so great as a team with Bong Soon. Such a pity.

And yes, I never really cared for Park Hyung Shik before, however the way he plays his character and the way he's styled just blows me away!!! I'll actually reconsider re-watching some of High Society to see him in action.

a very meh episode but
1. minhyuk in a white tee and ripped jeans? YUM TO THE MAX

2. i like how realistic the fight between the men was.. they both clearly knew some self-defense and quite limber, yet not Master Shifu levels of skillz. makes me thirsty for more action scenes from PHS

3. the way bongsoon lost her powers was so pointless and illogical. just stick to romance, writer-nim. clearly that's your strength

4. Gook Du is so damn incompetent. he needs to go back to police academy

5. i kinda hate the way BS used MH to help her find GS but then refused to listen to any advice he gave. and then did not even have the grace to tell him that she found out GS' location by hersef and spare him the trouble

I would say not only with female leads but with male leads too ?..he can even have chemistry with a lollipop in a photo ???

Ok. I' m reading the whole 125 comments and most of what I think about this ep already been said by others. So no point repeating it. LOL
1.This by far the weakest ep and some of the plot is pointless. Gangster sub plot should be drop as I dont see their connection to main plot.
3.BS pulling a noble idiocy... gahhh.... I agreed with most of comments here. Why? So that we get conflict between OTP?
5.MH continues to shine.
6.I dont understand DG action at the end. If this is Voice or Tunnel, I view DG as potential accomplice.
I' m glad we nearing the end tbh.

I'm surprised how personally I take the ratings drop of the last few episodes ?. I'm still a huge fan of this show, although I can see why the poop jokes, and the pointless gangster and high choppers scenes could be off putting. There goes my hope that the drama breaks 10%. I do hope the ratings pick up next week. There's only one week left. Fingers crossed.

This drama doesn't deserve to hit 10% not does it deserves the ratings it's getting now. The writing is weak and lazy, and the fact that this show has offensive moments where it tries to past it off as comedic fodder is disgusting. You shouldn't reward trash imo.

Just a random observation, but it seems like you don't like this show/PHS very much (seen a couple of comments in past recaps) so it's strange that you would still lurk around to leave comments.

Still, IMO, I would like the show to get 10% if only because I think all the acting chops in this show were fantastic. And not just PHS's skills - I especially like the doppelganger's character, as well as all the other minor characters like Bongki/Dad. If there's anything this drama did right, it was the warm/fuzzy scenes and the characters. I think it's harsh to call it trash just because it has scenes that are controversial.

Agreed. At first I was very sad to realise that the writers/director/actors (Park Hyung Sik!) know nothing about India at all. It's such a one-sided love.

But after reading all the comments on the discussion on this topic on a precious recap page, I concluded that the whole point was to mess up Indian culture - he's very clearly fake. Which gives me hope that they do know something about Indian culture and have purposely mixed it up. Haha wishful thinking. One-sided love.

to be honest, i'm so relieved that Min Hyuk IS the perfect guy! i was worried he might become the villain by keeping Bong Soon out of harm's way and solving it on his own. instead, he says "Let's do it together!" I really loved that scene in the beginning. when Bong Soon doesn't know what to do or who to turn to for help, she came to him directly, and he comforted her so well, i melted! and then she has to go ahead with that noble idiocy!! why, oh why? i could do very well without the breaking up scene. i had obviously hoped for some more of cute and adorable and/or intense with them working together. but it was really surprising that Bong Soon would go out alone (again) and lose her powers like that. i would rather have her kill KJH by mistake and then lose her powers as a result. Min Hyuk could have comforted her again and brought her out of the trauma and they could live happily ever after. this sounds more reasonable to me than what happened in this episode!! anyways, i guess we'll have to wait to see how she deals with this new life (literally) thrown at her.

I'm somewhat iffy about the reason why BS lost her strength- she's injured people in the past, e.g Secretary Gong, but I figured the reason why she didn't lose her strength then was because she didn't really ~mean~ to hurt the person in question. Yet this episode, she hurts an innocent bystander equally unintentionally, and somehow her powers are gone? I'm not quite seeing the connection at the moment... My best guess is that it's because she had the intention to hurt the person, whereas in previous episodes she didn't, but it wasn't quite clear.

On the bright side of things, I fall more and more in love with MH each day. Can this man get any more perfect? (No!) He gives me all the feels and then some. If only a person like this really existed... His good looks don't help at all.

Am I the only one getting tired of seeing all these cuts with Boss Tak and the gang? They make for some nice comedic relief at times, but most of the time I find myself skipping through their bits so I can get back to my (a) serial kidnapping case or (b) cotton-candy romcom. I find the intermissions with the gangsters rather out of place, or not entertaining itself for me to remain engaged.

And Kwangbok... Where do I start? I don't see the point of introducing this character. Was it purely for comedic relief or for BS to show off more of her strength? It's just a very stereotypical character chucked in for laughs to me, and he doesn't really advance the plot in any way. Well, it's not like we're seeing a lot of him at the moment, and he's not taking away too much airtime from our leads, so I suppose it's not a huge issue. It still irks me, though! I really love this drama, but these small issues I have with the side comedic-relief characters spoil a bit of the fun.

Overall, this episode has me excited for the remaining ones, and I'm curious as to how the ending will play out. :)

I wanted Min-hyuk to shake Bong-soon so bad and tell her to get herself together. I mean I get it. Your friend is in danger but that doesn't mean that you go in guns blazing with no plan whatsoever. If she's so afraid of hurting Min-hyuk whether that's physically or emotionally, she shouldn't have said yes to the relationship in the first place. Yeah, she has the superhuman strength but just because you have that doesn't mean you're gonna be undefeated. Min-hyuk could have helped her so much if she just let him. But in that regard, I wanted to shake Min-hyuk too cause he could've told Bong-soon that she can push him away but he will still help her. At least for the time being. Saving Kyung-shim was the goal SO SET ASIDE YOUR DIFFERENCES AND SAVE HER AND CATCH THE GUY.
I was so frustrated the whole episode. I couldn't even feel for them when Bong-soon lost her powers and fainted.
And I don't get why Bong-soon told Gook-doo about the video. It's not like she's asking his help.. And technically, she did tell the police by telling Gook-doo. I felt like that scene of them together was just used for the break up.
If she's going to tell Gook-doo then let him and Min-hyuk help her
Three heads work way better than one emotional one.

Hi paterciaa! I think the frustrating part of the show that you're referring to is to show us that Min Hyuk and Bong Soon haven't learned to work together yet, but they will. (And yes, it is frustrating!) Clearly this is a crime-fighting duo that's meant to be: he's the brains, she's the brawn. (The show's made very clear that she's never been all that bright.)

She's never had a clear purpose for her power or her life before, but she now wants to fight bad guys and Min Hyuk has been helping her train and control her strength. She needs to be able to accept working with a partner who is better at strategy and technical know-how.

Once they work it out they will be an awesome crime-fighting duo: as others have pointed out, Min Hyuk already has a Bat Cave. :P

Gook Du will end up being a great ally to them, too, I'm sure.

P.S. I hope this formatting works and this comment doesn't end up being a giant wall of text.

Yeah, they still haven't learned to work together but after everything they have done together you would think they would already figure out how to work together. I mean, they even started dating. I just find it hard to believe that Bong-soon's old "I'm alone and only I can do it" mentality was back full force. I thought we were over that. It was the reason she hesitated to admit her feelings for Min-hyuk in the first place and he knew it. I know them dating doesn't mean it will go away but at least they know it was that mentality that's making Bong-soon push him away.
After watching ep 14, it just solidified my belief that this was just the filler episode for that one. So that the pieces were in place for episode 14 to happen. I just felt like they could've made the events leading to the conflicts in this episode make more sense, in that it stayed true to the developments with the past 12 episodes. I felt like we were back to the start here with our two leads just so we can make conflict and angst happen. It felt too forced.. :(

I really liked the episode and the fact that Min-hyuk is not stepping down at all when confronting his Bong Bong. As said in the recap he is an alpha and he is trying very hard to keep both him and BS on equal ground. His past scars seem to be pretty deep but he is willing to fight to keep BS with him and I really loved that aspect of Min-hyuk. The necklace did indeed help...wonder if he will actually tell her that it is a tracker.
I assume she lost her power because she did hurt someone fuelled by revenge and hatred in her heart. Even if it was a mistake...I assume what was in her heart at that exact moment is what counts.
There seems to be a U-turn in the mother-father storyline. Now they are showing that mom is actually in love with dad. This was somehow missing before and it just seemed that mom was using dad for money. Wonder if it was planned like this or if the writers changed it to avoid criticism as it seemed to be just domestic abuse.
Hyung-shik is a perfect Min-hyuk and I really like how easily he switches from lighthearted comedy to serious alpha dog moments. Episode 14 seems to be going back to the fluffy love story between these 2 adorable characters (at least for a while they do deserve some happy time together).
The ordering chicken feet for BS was very sweet plus as usual it was a very subtle product placement moment. lol

Help. Seriously, PHS' acting is awesome. It's like his eyes can speak. Officially a fan.

And I can't help but feel that we're heading into noble idiocy zone. There was some warning beforehand already, with Bong Soon holding back and being apprehensive over whether to accept Min Hyuk. She was seen saying to herself that he will only get hurt around her. I really really hope she starts learning to be a team with him and not step into noble idiocy territory.

Apart from that, seriously loved how badass Bong Soon was in this episode. Albeit the whole doing-things-alone thing is not the most fun to witness, but I have been waiting for a real kickass moment for her for so long.

Park Hyung-shik is glorious in this role. I can't imagine anyone else as Ahn Min-hyuk. His eyes are so expressive and deep. As for noble idiocy -- we already saw some of that in this episode! Granted, I could see Bong-soon's reasoning behind her noble idiocy of wanting to keep Min-hyuk out of the danger, but it was still hella frustrating. This show has been so good at working around the usual cliches that this episode just felt very predictable and unnecessarily angsty.
