Drama viewership ratings for the week of Apr. 3-9, 2017

Whisper has very quickly taken over the top spot amongst the Monday-Tuesday dramas, which is par for the course for its production team. It’s always good news when a good quality show gets recognized in the numbers game, even if there are plenty that go under-appreciated by the viewing public too. It’s a game that you sometimes win and sometimes don’t.

At least Perfect Wife is keeping its head above 5%, while Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People seems content to hold onto its double digits. Whether that’ll change if Whisper keeps climbing upward has yet to be seen. Poor The Liar and His Lover isn’t doing much better than its predecessor over at tvN, but its still holding its ground.

Mystery Queen began its run in the slot left behind by Chief Kim, and saw a decently drastic drop between its first and second episodes—nothing to be too concerned about yet though, I hope. As far as the weekend goes, we had one new premiere in Chicago Typewriter, which is already doing better than Tomorrow With You. Good news for the execs over at tvN, but let’s see if they can hit this one out of the park. (But you know who’s really hitting it out of the park? Strong Woman Do Bong-soon.)

I skimmed bits of High Society just for Park Hyung-shik. Dude knows how to kiss!

3

Do watch it, please. If only for his glorious mane of glory. ? Long hair suits him well.

0

^ interestingly, as per what @anayahs says... Go Ara cries at least once in every episode. I didn't even realize it until someone compiled a video of it, LOL!

Still, worth a watch (or rather, fast-forwarding) just for the scenes between the Hwarang, Sooyeon + Banryu, and definitely PHS's scenes of course.

0

Favourite scene for me in High Society is when Park Hyung-sik's character got his shirt accidentally rrripped. Been awhile but still chuckling when remembering.

I really liked the first episode of Mystery Queen; the second was just okay for me, but it does have a lot of potential. Honestly though, I find that the Korean audience can jump ship rather quickly so it wouldn't surprise me if Radiant Office ticked up a bit more, especially now that we are getting more between the two leads.

1
reply

Required fields are marked *

I was actually quite excited about Mystery Queen but I stopped twice in less than 15 minutes. It's probably more because I didn't give it enough attention.

I've been too distracted by Tunnel which I marathoned. I wasn't expecting to like this one so much. It has the right amount of thrills, mystery and humor without being too heavy or over the top like Voice or Defendant.

2
reply

Required fields are marked *

I think Mystery Queen is good. Out of all the currently airing crime shows, it is much lighter in tone. It still has some action and violence, but the episodes also revealed info on the main character's situation and home/everyday life. The female lead gave insightful reasons behind crime scenes and clues. The first two episodes just zipped by for me. Made me laugh a lot too. Hope you give it a chance. ^^

Yess I want more for CT, I think so far first two episodes were great. Not watching Liar and His Lover, but probably this kind of drama will have a better rating and more popular if they casted more popular actors and idols (from rating perspective). Like Dream High.

0
2

Required fields are marked *

More like it will better if they cast more at least servicable actor. I swear the amount of bad acting is so apparent it's bothering some people who are demand good acting when watching a drama/movie.

Required fields are marked *

I cannot comment on acting since I don't watch it. I just watched half of epi 1, and half of latest episode, because I got curious but guess it isn't my cup of tea. The actors themselves already are not convincing in my eyes, but sometimes the drama itself can be enjoyable to watch if the plot is interesting.

What I meant earlier, if they casted someone who are really popular who can create more buzz as the leading actor for eg, probably the rating will be higher. Since what I read everywhere this is good drama.

Who knew JTBC and OCN would one day perform better than tvN, which has been the boss of drama ratings for cable channels for a long time now. They seem to be in a bit of a slump lately, hopefully CT will help them get more solid ratings again.
I was worried for Mystery Queen because it seems everytime I really look forward to a show it gets disastrous ratings, only to be relieved to find out the 1st episode did well. But now I see it lost 2% in its second episode, so yikes!

Required fields are marked *

I know, right? tvN had that dramatic climb, taking in massive ratings for 'Signal' and 'Oh Hae-young Again' and 'Goblin'... so what happened? How did that NOT just bring more attention?

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

Strictly speaking from my own point of view, I do think the content they've been airing lately isn't really up to par with their usual standards of quality and that's why they've failed to capitalize on all the attention they got. Stuff like Introverted Boss and The Liar and His Lover just doesn't seem to have that tvN trademark of fresh/daring/quirky and could have just as easily aired on the Big 3. Especially Liar has KBS written all over it. Couple that with the epic failure that was Entourage and the out-of-character airing of Cinderella, their identity seems to have been compromised a little. I just think they need another couple of good shows to regain their footing. They've had other flops in the past too (Ex-GF Club, Surplus Princess, Bubblegum, My Secret Hotel to name a few), but usually their dramas don't all fail at the same time, so that's why their slump is very noticeable right now. Couple that with the fact that the other cable channels are airing some really strong/trendy content at the moment! But really, jtbc and OCN have had so many good shows along the years that received so little attention, I'm more intrigued by the fact the public finally took notice. Better late than never I guess.

5
4
reply

Required fields are marked *

I agree, they did have quite a few "flops" before. It's just that they had a string of great dramas since last year that the "dullness" of some recent dramas are more noticeable, I guess.

And I'm still mourning over Tomorrow With You. Sigh. We rarely see Lee Je Hoon in a romantic story and that happened...

I thought I was the only one who's still bitter with TWY's rating. sigh.

You have a point, 'Introverted Boss' was a slip-up, maybe it caused less enthusiasm for the timeslot,or maybe it's the small-name actors in 'The Liar and His Lover'.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Agree with you! Well for the last 2 years it seems tvN is on the decline, compromised with the quality though the ratings hadn't been this bad. It seems only a year ago they completely dominated cable channel with Signal, Oh Hae Young and Goblin. But after Goblin ends, they somehow ends up in the last position behind JTBC and OCN.

Don't forget JTBC also has very strong, quality shows since last year like Ms.Temper, Mirror of the Witch, My Wife Having An Affair, and Strong Woman Do Bong Soon. While OCN continue churning good procedural/thriller dramas like Voice and Tunnel.

It's really unfortunate for tvN, but I guess life's full ups and downs. And atm JTBC and OCN are going strong, at the expense of tvN.

2
reply

Required fields are marked *

I kind of feel like tvN is trying too hard to create another Signal or Oh Hae Young or Goblin. Like some of their recent shows have felt like they are trying to recreate the tone/feel of those shows, and it's just not working for various reasons.

Required fields are marked *

OCN is TVN sister channel though because they are owned by the same company :)

1

Required fields are marked *

I know they're both under CJ E&M, but tvN was the popular trendy channel while OCN was the niche channel for crime enthusiasts, with ratings that were generally nothing to write home about, but these days it's unexpectedly doing better than its more mainstream counterpart.

Chicago Typewriter's initial numbers are pretty good, especially since tvN is in the midst of a slump. I like it a lot, but I don't think it's the kind of show that has a broad enough appeal to rise above 4-5%. I'll be happy to be proven wrong though.

I just remember I haven't watched Whisper latest episodes yet! Lol. Too many good shows these days imo.

Our Gabsoon finally ended, at least the 10 epi extension probably worth it because the final episode reached 20%.

Father Is Strange - Do you know how much I love the parent in this drama so far? It is quite rare to see the old couple communicating well with each other. I smell a lot of troubles waiting lol. I think Hye Young will move out from her bf's house, at least that is what I hoped for.

On a side note, have you heard our veteran actress Kim Young Ae passed away today at the age of 65 due to the cancer. Deepest condolences to her family. She is always among my favourite veteran actress and surely will be always missed. Her last work was Laurel Tree Tailor, and among her other recent work was as Park Shin Hye's grandmother in Doctors. The grandeur-ish (?) setting/house/tone reminds me of Goblin but I really hope it won't be as slow. I was instantly drawn to CT because of its title, and later because of *that* haircut, which actually doesn't bother me anymore (it helps that Yoo Ah In can act).

I haven't really lurked around recaps for it because my mind is completely preoccupied with SWDBS, but I hope it picks up some steam in ratings!

I watched Chicago Typewriter this week and overall it was intriguing. I have a feeling that this drama will focus more on the events than character developments, which I hope won't be the case because I want a balance of both. Im Soo-jung is brilliant as ever. If not because of her inserting emotion depth to the character, I might find Seol to be somewhat annoying. Seol being super cool and grounded and badass at the end of the first episode is the highlight for me so far.

I hope the ratings will go up. They all deserve a good project to their names.

In beanies community based on what I observed so far, the type of sageuk that will be loved the most (or at least have many viewers) is romance/fantasy sageuk. That's why something like Moonlovers and Moonlights last year had many followers.

Rebel is a more serious sageuk, not everyone will love it. I think the rating is doing good now, MBC can smile a bit since both drama in weekdays'slot are doing well, although not something hit, but at least give some lights.

i am enjoying it -- not a big SSH fan, but i like the actress and the story is very interesting! give it a try, i don't pay much attention to the ratings -- you'll miss alot of good shows if you do...
