Chicago Typewriter: Episode 7
by gummimochi
Absence may make the heart grow fonder for most people, but Se-joo isn’t like most when it comes to much of anything. Everything about his own reality will come into question this hour when the boundaries between the past and present blur, making it that much harder to discern the truth. But there’s so much more to learn about the past than we may have ever thought possible, and that’s a mystery worth unraveling.
EPISODE 7 RECAP
In the 1930s, Soo-hyun is bewildered upon hearing that Hwi-young won’t be publishing his novel. She believes she has a say as one of the main characters, though Hwi-young disagrees, and Jin-oh nips this latest bickering match between them in the bud, adding that it wasn’t like the two were enemies their past lives or anything.
He instructs Hwi-young to properly treat Soo-hyun’s injured arm, pointing out that their aspiring writer is a pharmacist’s son and a former medical student. When both Hwi-young and Soo-hyun balk at the idea, he roars at them to get out of his club then.
Once they’re alone, Hwi-young orders Soo-hyun to take off her clothes so he can examine the wound. He reassures her that he doesn’t see her as a woman, but he stops her from escaping. She responds by striking his face.
He then chases her around the club, warning her that they cannot let her gunshot wound fester. She refuses to be treated by a quack, and he snarls back that he can give her ten stitches versus one. She runs for the exit, but he beats her to the door. She finally relents and lets him treat her wound.
Hwi-young hands her a handkerchief to bite down on, and says she can scream in pain since he’ll be cutting into her sans anesthesia. He’s impressed when Soo-hyun doesn’t squeak at all, to which she says she wouldn’t dare shed a tear when there are so many other helpless voices in their homeland.
She watches him wrap her up, looking away when he meets her gaze. She’s surprised to hear that Hwi-young was disowned by his prestigious family, though he says no wealthy family would approve of their only son quitting medical school to pursue writing instead.
Still, his medical background came in handy in treating their fellow independence fighters, and she points out that a gun isn’t the only thing that can save the world. She thinks his novel is absolutely amazing; she could tell from the very first page that he’d become a phenomenal writer.
She encourages him to keep writing and treat their comrades, believing that those things are important contributions to freedom.
In the present, Ghost Jin-oh echoes Soo-hyun’s hopes that Hwi-young’s novel would be completed one day, adding, “Aren’t you curious about how we met and how we became friends? Why Soo-hyun had to disguise herself as a man, why she had to hold a gun, how we lived that time together, what our last moments looked like?”
“No,” Se-joo breathes, “Why should I be curious about those things?” Even if Jin-oh’s words are true, he says, living in the present is already hard enough that he needn’t concern himself about the past. How would knowing the past benefit his life right now?
Those are harsh words for Jin-oh to hear, as he asks if Se-joo can’t grant a favor for an old friend. But Se-joo believes that friendship is always tied to betrayal, and doing one favor opens the door to many more. Jin-oh utters, “You’ve changed… a great deal.”
Se-joo replies that it’s hard to survive in these times without being cutthroat, and that’s enough for Jin-oh to back down. Se-joo asks for his name, but he’s already gone.
While Jin-oh swings by to thank his furry host body for his help, Seol is busy complaining about Se-joo’s angry and violent tendencies to Bang-jin inside a pojangmacha. Bang-jin is nice enough to badmouth him with her, but then Seol says that he isn’t all bad, and Bang-jin tells her to choose a side—is she Se-joo’s fan or anti-fan?
She then zips out to use the bathroom and runs into Jin-oh, but before he can say much, she tells him to stay put because nature calls. Watching Seol pound one drink after another, he tells her not to drink so much because it makes saying goodbye that much harder.
As if she heard him, Seol sets down her glass and muses aloud, “Why is Han Se-joo so selfish and unable to trust others?” Jin-oh agrees with her, saying that he wasn’t like that in the past. Looking at her, he wonders, “If I had found you first, would you have believed what I said?”
Seol sighs and Jin-oh continues, “If you had seen me first, if you had… would you have been happy to see me like you were in the past?” And much to his shock, Seol turns her head in his direction and smiles, as if she can see him. She leans toward him… and collapses into his chest.
Bang-jin returns to find Jin-oh gone and Seol passed out. She calls upon Dae-han to carry their friend home, and he thinks Seol got drunk because she felt sorry towards him. Aw, buddy. Seol dreams of her past life, where Soo-hyun calls out for her parents in her sleep.
Hwi-young sits on the bed and delicately places a comforting, calming hand on her forehead. Seol wakes up in her own bed, still reeling from her dream. Se-joo suffers from a fitful sleep in his own bed, and a hand rests on his forehead. It’s Soo-hyun, and the words from Seol’s book about working hard to survive echo in his head as Se-joo calms down.
When the publishing team worries that Se-joo will be absent from an upcoming writer’s camp, Ji-seok checks in with Secretary Kang, who reports that Se-joo has been enjoying a variety of hobbies from cooking to legos to growing blueberries—everything except writing.
So when Ji-seok drops by the house, he finds Se-joo gardening and living by the new motto “carpe diem.” He takes Se-joo out to a book-themed restaurant that night, not believing that Se-joo has fallen into another slump.
He brings up how he and Se-joo first met eight years ago on a bright spring day where he approached him wearing a sharp suit… though Se-joo counters that it was cloudy that day and Ji-seok was in a tracksuit. LOL.
Still, the point was that Ji-seok wanted to make him into a famous author, getting his attention by promising to pull him out of Tae-min’s shadow. Ji-seok claimed that Se-joo had it all—talent, potential, and good looks—and could envision a rich future for them. To his surprise, Se-joo readily agreed, saying that he liked Ji-seok’s immaturity and blatant thirst for money.
Ji-seok wonders why Se-joo has drastically changed since then, only to hear that Se-joo no longer has a clear motive in mind. He’s willing to help Se-joo find a reason to write and to live, but Se-joo says what’s most important is that he finds no joy in writing anymore.
Se-joo is tired of putting his career on the line, and has another reason too, which we only hear after he leaves Ji-seok behind and walks to the animal clinic. He thinks, I get so confused between my past and present lives, whether what’s been written was actually me or not.
Standing outside the window, he continues that thought of whether he still feels sluggish because of Soo-hyun or Seol, who sees him there. Her attention is pulled away for a moment, but when she looks back, he’s gone. She heads outside to check, unaware that he’s standing right around the corner.
Seol and Bang-jin head home with Gyeon-woo because the clinic can’t afford to let people think they will take care of stray animals indefinitely. She feels bad for being a freeloader and bringing an animal home, but she can’t bring herself to turn Gyeon-woo away.
It was Bang-jin’s mother who took her in after her father died, and those childhood memories bring Bang-jin to tears because Seol was her only true and loyal friend. They both cry in each other’s arms, shedding tears of gratitude, and that’s when Bang-jin’s mother appears.
Cut to: Bang-jin and Seol swearing that Gyeon-woo is just a harmless English sheepdog. Seol claims that Gyeon-woo is too sheepish to drive out any spirits and impede the fortune-telling business. Bang-jin’s mother allows the dog to stay in the hopes that it does actually ward off ghosts (since she’s more worried about her daughter’s ability to see ghosts).
Unfortunately, Gyeon-woo’s constant barking keeps everyone up at night, so Seol has to take him away the next day. When Gyeon-woo stops walking, she wonders if he’s afraid of being abandoned and encourages him to keep his head up.
While Se-joo chucks away an invitation to the upcoming writer’s camp which features Tae-min and himself, Seol calls Tae-min, who agrees to adopt Gyeon-woo in exchange for coffee. That’s where she runs into Se-joo, who tries to angle for a conversation.
But she ignores him until he confronts her about it. Noting his use of banmal, she agrees to follow his lead—if he speaks respectfully, so will she, and vice versa. So he addresses her with respect and that gets her to sit down with him.
She can barely hide a smile when he apologizes for what happened when they last met, though that quickly fades when he evades responsibility for being a potential pet abuser and damaging her bag. She asks who was responsible for all of those incidents then, encouraging him to come clean.
But when Se-joo asks if she believes in ghosts, Seol slams her hands on the table, outraged that he’d resort to such a flimsy excuse when she was prepared to hear him out. She was even willing to wait when he swung by the animal clinic, but now she wonders if he finds making apologies too damn hard.
Se-joo tries to keep his frustration in check while walking her through what happened that night at his dining table. He reminds her that he was too far away to grab her bag, arguing that there must’ve been a third party present.
She sighs, remarking that she doesn’t even want to see his face anymore. Getting up from her seat, she orders Se-joo to leave. So he does, and upon seeing Gyeon-woo waiting outside, Se-joo addresses him as Jin-oh. Lol.
He asks Jin-oh to appear and blames him for throwing his life into disarray. Behind him, Seol rolls her eyes, listening to Se-joo as he promises to work with Jin-oh to make himself visible. When she interrupts them, Se-joo swears that this is no ordinary dog, but Seol will hear none of it and walks away.
Se-joo chases them down and asks for Gyeon-woo. She matter-of-factly tells him that it’s too late, and when he earnestly vows to raise the dog, she reminds him that he’s supposed to be allergic.
Tae-min shows up at that very moment, surprised to hear about Se-joo’s dog fur allergy. Seol glares back at him, and Se-joo explains that he needed an excuse to prevent fans from sending pets to him as gifts.
He swears that he’ll never abandon this dog, but when Seol doesn’t see why she should entrust him with Gyeon-woo, he cites that his large estate and willingness to feed the dog with only the best should be more than enough. Tae-min relents, saying that he can’t compete with that, coming off like a chivalrous knight while Se-joo takes Gyeon-woo away.
Se-joo takes Gyeon-woo back to his study, where he swears they won’t be interrupted here. He invites Jin-oh to appear before him, but nothing happens, and Se-joo wonders if Gyeon-woo is just a dog.
Secretary Kang is shocked that he’d bring a dog home and gapes as he starts building a doghouse. He doesn’t get very far before he accidentally hammers his finger and then stares up at the sky, thinking of how both Soo-hyun and Seol expressed their belief that he’d become a great writer. His thoughts slip into Seol’s hopes that he’ll continue writing and Jin-oh asking him to complete the serial novel.
At his workspace, Tae-min notices Seol looking distracted which prompts him to tease if his manuscript is boring. She says she’s worried about Gyeon-woo, and Tae-min replies that Se-joo would’ve done anything to take the dog with him because the moment he finds interest in something, Se-joo always wants it for himself.
It’s then that Seol remembers that he and Se-joo once lived under the same roof, and that the two made headlines once for possibly being related. Tae-min gets straight to the point, asking her what sort of relationship she and Se-joo actually share: Is it romance like the scandal claims or is she just a devoted reader?
Pleased to hear that it’s the latter, he changes the subject to the manuscript, pointing out the areas that require her expertise. A thunderstorm brews outside, and Se-joo’s eyes once again fall upon the antique typewriter.
He tells Jin-oh to come out of the typewriter, calling him a coward when nothing happens. He screams at him for messing up his life, then concedes to start writing again if it means that Jin-oh will show up.
Just then, everything goes black, and Se-joo turns to see Jin-oh looking out the window. Once the lights come back on, Jin-oh is staring right at him, looking pleased. “Did you mean that?” Jin-oh ventures, “What you said about continuing to write the novel.”
Se-joo says he’s a man of his word and agrees to continue writing Chicago Typewriter together. He hasn’t changed his mind about his past life not mattering much to his present life, and he still refuses to acknowledge that he and Jin-oh are friends.
Asked why agreed to keep writing then, Se-joo answers that it’s because completing this “assignment” is the only way to go back to the way things were, where there is no chaos and he can go back to his life as a writer.
He figures that the answers will come to him if he starts writing again, and it’s possible that Jin-oh can help him overcome this career slump. Jin-oh warns him that this is the point of no return—once Se-joo agrees, there’s no going back: “You must see this to the end, no matter how this novel ends and whatever truth you may discover. Will you still draw a contract with me?”
Se-joo repeats that he will, so Jin-oh agrees to help him… on one condition, which we don’t get to hear.
Seol finishes Tae-min’s manuscript and is momentarily surprised to find him standing behind her. He invites her to the writers’ workshop, and upon hearing that she failed to get in because the competition was too fierce, he guesses that she’d tried to be a part of Se-joo’s team.
She declines a ride home, which he finds slightly infuriating. Stay away from her! But he follows her outside and discovers her struggling to find her umbrella. He offers to give her a ride again, but Seol declines again, having found her umbrella.
She steps out into the street just as a scooter zooms past, and Tae-min pulls her out of the way just in time. He still has a strong hold on her while insisting on taking her home… when Se-joo swoops in to release her from his grip.
It’s at that moment we hear what Jin-oh’s stipulation was in this deal: “Get rid of all of the men hanging around Seol. All of them. I’m asking you to prevent my woman from dating anyone else.”
Se-joo was astounded that Jin-oh would ask for something that petty and childish, but we can see that he’s agreed anyway. Tae-min laughs and darkly asks, “What are you doing?”
Se-joo says he’s upholding his promise to never let Tae-min steal something away from him again. With that, he leads Seol away with a satisfied grin.
COMMENTS
Yesss, get her away from that creepy pet-abusing-envy-hungry-monster! Ever since we were shown Tae-min’s darker colors, I watch his scenes with a feeling of apprehension and fear, since we don’t necessarily know what word or action might push him over the edge at any given moment. There’s a part of me that wishes we could do without his character in the present narrative, given that on paper, Tae-min is someone who suffers from an inferiority complex who resorts to scathing remarks and spewing skewed truths. Yet at the same time, I wouldn’t be surprised if he too is a reincarnation of someone from the past, and ultimately responsible for Soo-hyun being driven to shooting someone dead.
It’s hard to say for sure, since that means Jin-oh would’ve recognized him (unless Tae-min wore a different face back then as the devil incarnate), though the number of his interactions with Tae-min himself are so few to draw a solid conclusion there. Still, there’s no doubt that I fear for Seol’s life whenever he’s around, and I held my breath when he offered to take Gyeon-woo in again. I do get the sense that Seol does find being around him uncomfortable and is treading carefully as a result, though I doubt that will stop Tae-min from exhibiting more behavior that crosses the line.
I love how much time we spent in the 1930s today in order to flesh out our characters’ past lives even more. While Jin-oh is still very much a question mark in both time periods, I appreciate that we learned more about Hwi-young’s background and how he left that behind to pursue his own dreams. We can see where he and Se-joo’s personalities overlap, mostly in how they both write like mad men, and we’re told that Se-joo differs in other ways. There is no doubt that Se-joo has a polarizing personality and often reacts to situations in extreme ways (with Seol being on the receiving end), but as much as she’s puzzled by the glimpses of her past life, so is he, as he finds it increasingly difficult to discern his two lives and his own consciousness. I still want to know what Jin-oh means by half the vague statements he says, especially when he asks Seol questions like if her opinion of him would’ve changed if he had been there first. Even if he doesn’t know how the final moments of his previous life ended, he still knows a great deal of information we haven’t been told yet.
Se-joo had to do without Jin-oh’s presence for most of this hour, which led to a number of both sad and hilarious moments. My heart still breaks for Jin-oh, however, who knew that Seol wouldn’t be able to see him. Even so, I loved how Seol fell against his chest and seeing how much that meant to him. His stipulation that he wanted Se-joo to get rid of all of her other suitors may be childish and overly possessive given that he is an apparition (well, for now anyway), and things are bound to get more complicated once Se-joo realizes his own feelings for Seol, but for the time being, let’s just let the phantom seize the day.

Me too. The worst thing for a second lead not to get a girl is because he is a ghost. Will he ever be visible to Seol? I would love for him to be visible to her, even for 5 seconds. She has visions of him in her past life right?

I kind of like the doomed element, it makes him different from the typical second lead. And this makes his motivations nicely complex: he's mostly in love with her prior incarnation, he's resigned to his ghosthood, and I think he's at times acting as Se Joo's wingman.
That said, I'm skeptical that he'll be able to resist possessing the object of Seol's affection once he masters human possession. He comes across as an easygoing guy right now, but he was a resistance fighter - elements of his personality that are more forceful may just not have surfaced quite yet.

I totally thought it was Jin Oh who grabbed Seol in the last scene. I was giggling, and then realized, oh it's Se Joo after all, and giggled even harder, because that's funnier. He had to go through all these because Jin Oh asked him to. He was so cheeky while asking too!

I've been watching too many dramas while I'm on maternity leave. Every single show and nearly every episode is full of Subway PPL. I'm thinking of switching to sageuk just to get a reprieve.
I don't know if it's always been this blatant and I just didn't watch enough shows to realize or if it's gotten worse in the past few years.

This entire show is lovely, but Jin Oh is breaking my heart. He's somehow a mix of childlike giddiness and old, truly old knowledge - the kind you get with distance and time and reminiscence. Somehow both sides work together - he's not just old-fashioned, he's an old soul who's still vibrant and engaged. I'm not sure I've ever seen a ghost portrayed in quite this way and it's just perfect.
Seol and Se Joo are ticking along nicely, though they were sort of second fiddles this episode. Tae Min... dude. I think both he and his mom are genuinely mentally ill, and in the same way. This need for control and bizarre, festering ability to take slights and really internalize them is spooky. It is also incredibly sinister to know that Tae Min is being pretty damn calculating in his manipulations of Seol.
Lastly, kudos for the abscessed gunshot wound. Ew, but also realistic. And gross. But she DID need that thing lanced, and it would've hurt like hell.

I love your description of Yoo. He is really like an old soul who's still vibrant and engaged with life. He strives to live so vicariously that it's a pity he is a ghost. Imagine the things he would have done to court Seol had he been a human. Ah!

Tae-min turned into a hateful character once he started to take out his anger on his cat. But I found him to be really creepy and dangerous when I finally understand the extent of his manipulations in his relationship with Seol, and how furious he was by Seol's polite and normal rejection of his offer. I hope Seol will recognize how dangerous this man is soon, but if that means she could be the one on the receiving end of his cruelty... I got goosebumps already thinking about all the bad things that man could possibly do to her.

Seol seems to be aware that something might be off with Tae-min, especially how he creepily invaded her personal space after she finished reading his manuscript and the grabbing scene. First, before I forget again, thank you @gummimochi for the incredibly fast recap! Are you the Flash or something? ?
Oh this episode. I feel like I've said that almost every episode hahaha. Didn't jot down notes as I was watching this time so my thoughts would be quite jumbled up, don't mind me!
Damn it Baek Tae-min, just get out. Telling Seol that Se-ju wants everything you want? Really? Dude, are you talking about yourself or are you talking about yourself, huh? Also, let go when someone asks man, damn. I'm so glad Seol is on the defensive (that's what my sub said), please continue to be on your guard girl! Speaking of Seol and Tae-min, I was slightly disappointed when Seol was distracted by Gyeon-woo, I harboured hope that she would pick up that Tae-min was trying to imitate Se-ju's style.
Moving on, oh Yoo. I feel like he really should stop thinking of Se-ju as Hwi-young, though that would be hard to do. The questions he posed to Se-ju, yassss please show me the answers Writer-nim. His reaction when Seol was looking at him at the pojangmacha, oh my heart. Lol at his dramatic re-entrance into Se-ju's writing room hahahaha and also his condition for Se-ju to keep the other bees from hovering around the flower that is Seol. When he mentioned that there was no going back on writing CT regardless of what Se-ju would learn, I got a bad feeling about this!
Se-ju, oh Se-ju. When he swooped in to "rescue" Seol, whoa I was shook. The revelation that he actually isn't allergic to dog fur...well it makes sense yet served him right haha. I'm glad he has realised that because he has been writing like crazy for so many years, he has missed out on many things. Continue to live by that motto, Se-ju ya. Ji-seok and Se-ju's recount of how they met hahahaha omg. It felt like they were watching the flashback together, that was funny! Ah so Se-ju did publish his draft of "Fate" but called it "Destiny"? Interesting. That parallel of the forehead-touching (I make it sound so creepy hahaha). I loved it! When Hwi-young rested his hand on Soo-hyeon's forehead, I thought of that poem Seol brought up and in the next scene, we see Soo-hyeon "reciprocating". Speaking of Hwi-young, whoaaa. What he did took guts and it makes me more sure that he isn't the one who betrayed anyone unless something happened? I couldn't watch the cutting of flesh, I looked away. /: Him asking Soo-hyeon to strip and how he won't see her as a girl though, not cool.
Lastly, Bang-jin and Seol. You two, so sweet. When they cried together, I started tearing too. ? It was hilarious how they were trying to convince Ajumma to keep Gyeon-woo. Was he barking all night long because of ghosts? Poor Bang-jin missed out on hearing Yoo's confession properly, I hope he tries again! Jin-oh is just so soft and pure I love him so much ugggh...I really want to see more of his one-sided love, and I just find every aspect of his character adorable. I literally have to pause the show every few minutes just to squeal over him. I can't wait to see his relationship with Se-joo progress. Give me my bromance!
I really enjoy Se-joo's character as well, but I think if it was any other actor playing him he'd be awful. The character itself is very inconsistent and doesn't reaaaalllly make any sense, but I still love him. I think once Se-joo's character is developed a bit more, he'll be great, but at the moment I'm a bit tired of his crazy mood swings and outbursts. His happy moments don't seem natural to me, and he's just constantly angry about something lol. I love him to bits though, don't ask why :P
I love love looove Seol and I think she's very endearing, but like?? She does nothing??? I kind of feel like she's just chilling in the background and only coming in to move along the plot occasionally. I think she could use a little more screen time, except the screen time being to focus on her character development instead of some other character. I want to see her more in depth and get to see more background on her, both in past and present.
And finally, I hope Tae-min falls off a cliff :)

In contrast to your opinion, I think CT writer did well in describing a talented phenomenal writer Han Se Joo. I believe she did her research first about influential authors in the past to build SJ's character. Most of the famous authors/writers had eccentric personality, some had nervous disorder, most of them had mood swing, some even had violent relationships. E.g: James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, Byron, Rimbaud, etc. Genius minds like Ernest Hemingway, Stephen King and Edgar Allan Poe were even a drug addict, which had something to do with their emotional issue. IMO, James Joyce is nearly similar with Han Se Joo. He was blunt, harsh, stubborn, controversial, and he made comments that made people angry at his time. These writers have restless soul, and their best way to pour down their words to be heard and to be understood by other people are through writing.

Interesting that you highlighted all the famous writers's eccentric personalities. I was almost sure too that this writer did her research about the authors and the literary world. The paintings in Se Joo's room were of Eugene O' Neill and James Joyce (thanks to beanies who mentioned them in previous recaps). I thought it was Edgar Poe, but google proves that it was James Joyce.
Not sure if it's just me overanalysing things, but I can also see the influence of Edgar Poe's in the mystery and gothics' themes. The first few eps of this show was a bit disturbing in terms of the level of spookiness, and it also plays around the mystery of somebody's death. Maybe I was wrong but it reminds me so much of Poe (because I read most of his works). When Se Joo told Seol last week that "it's not what it seems" (when Seol thought he's about to hit the dog), that reminds me of Poe's "Is all that we see or seem but a dream within a dream?" from his poem A Dream Within a Dream (it's my fav that's why I remember hee). The poem which of course deals with the distinction between reality and fantasy, and appreciating the things we had and of things that slipped away.
Gosh, I must be overanalysing things. -___-

Interesting take on Poe's poem! Oh no, you didn't over-analyze things :D Besides Joyce, I'm sure CT's writer is influenced by the Gothic authors to build the story too. There's this website talking about CT and its connection with Gothic romance and Salvador Dali's "The Persistence of Time". In the first episode, Han Se Joo was introduced as the "Korean Stephen King". Stephen King is one of the famous Gothic authors. King is influenced by Edgar Allan Poe, while Poe was inspired by another famous Gothic author Lord Byron. You'd probably interested to read about this here https://yooahinsikseekland.wordpress.com/2017/04/18/the-various-findings-in-chicago-typewriter-translations-on-the-manuscripts-famous-authors-quotes-resonate-with-yoo-ah-in/

Anyone who knows Korean or has a good translation machine (lol) should check out this review published by http://star.ohmynews.com/NWS_Web/OhmyStar/at_pg.aspx?CNTN_CD=A0002320267
(Ohmynews is one of the very few news portals publishing independent reviews on dramas, films or books).
This drama remains steadfastly a critical self-reflection of Jin Soo-won as a drama "scriptwriter" who, like every other scriptwriter, races against deadline while being expected to produce something palatable to popular taste and censorship in the form of rating and capital investment, even at the price of compromising one's conscience and artistic aspiration.
Isn't it ironic that Han Se Jo has all the renown highbrow literature figures on his wall while he has submitted himself to writing middlebrow, "safe" popular fictions? (Don't make me wrong--I am a big fan of Stephen King and his fictions, like the writer himself, convey criticisms of the problems of the United States where I am).
My point is, the romance and mystery in Chicago Typewriter are more like "props" to the central theme of writing. The friendship between Se Jo and Yoo, as mirrored by that between Hemingway and Fitzgerald, is key to reinstilling the passion Se-jo once possessed towards writing. (In a stark contrast, Ji-seok cares only about the reproduction, not the motivations). The love line betwen Se Jo and Seol also forces Se Jo to cope with the inner trauma of abandonment and betrayal, for since ten years ago, Se Jo is basically a walking "ghost" closed in the trauma. To become a real writer, one has to build an open relationship with one's self and allows oneself to be transformed, as ancient Greek philosophers like Plato taught us.

Aah.. Interesting. During discussion win Jin Seok at the cafe, Se Jo also reflected on his writing - whether he's happy with his writing, why he writes and for what purpose. And similar hints about the issue of popular fiction in writing was also highlighted in the 30s scenes as Soo Hyun repeatedly asked him to write something magnificient. When thinking about it, maybe that's why the writer was so stingy on giving the 30s scenes, because the main focus of this drama is not about the romance and mystery itself, but about the whole process of writing and relection in writing.
Talking about reflection in writing, it is also interesting to note that reflection in writing is always associated with the cognitive process theory in writing. Writing processes is not just about planning what to write and translate them into words. If there are errors in either the planning stage and translating stage, that is what could lead to frustration for the writer (in this case, Se Jo’s writer’s block). What guides the writer’s decision to write what they write? What’s going on in the writer’s mind during the art of composing itself? What influenced their writing? These rhetorical problems are things that affect writers’ performances, and I think they are being discussed in this drama.

Now that gives a new light to this drama! Thanks @ennui-young :) As I said before, Yoo took role as SJ's catalyst/stimulation to go back to his root. But finding out that this is Jin Soo Won's self-reflection makes CT more meaningful.

Now this! Super interesting take on the writer's intention. I never considered her as a really prolific scriptwriter. But my respect grew after CT, and now this after she revealed it as a critical self-reflection as a drama scriptwriter. Indeed, Hemmingway and Fitzgerald had unique "bromance" relationship. They told the truth to each other, criticized each other's works and were supportive of each other. When you mentioned "ghost" it was exactly what Writer Yoo said to SJ in episode 8.

That's really interesting! If Se-joo's character was inspired by the writers mentioned, it definitely makes a lot more sense. Especially since you mention that their best way to be heard is through writing. Due to his writers block, Se-joo has gotten more irritated and emotional, which I found interesting. He depends on his writing, so now that he doesn't have it he's becoming increasingly frustrated and emotional. I really want to go more in depth in his character and background, especially his life living with Tae-min and his father. Most of his emotional trauma seems to have come from that house, but I'm wondering if it is from one specific moment or just daily life there.

Actually I'm glad that Se-joo isn't the usual tsundere character. He has quite extreme mood swing and his outburst usually comes out of the blue. But he is also someone who lives by himself from a very young age, then somewhat adopted by a family that betrayed him in every way possible and mentally abused him for a long time. He is emotionally damaged and he has difficulty controlling his emotion and reaction.
I'm also glad that the drama take this issue seriously since he has regular appointment with psychiatrist. It's not just something that can be fixed by meeting that one precious girl. He is aware of his problem, but it's not that easy to treat it, especially with his trust and abandonment issue. I hope his meeting with Seol and Yoo will remind him that he actually could trust some people and it would be a step toward his better self and life.

And another that distinguishes Se-jo from other typical rom-com male leads is that he is consistently serious about his "profession" from ten years ago to now. In most cases, Kdrama romantic heroes only exist for the sake of romance. Se-jo's outbursts and mood swings also at least feel genuine in the sense that he never bothers or wants to "hide" himself in a facade of civility, because the Baek family that betrays him is all about pretense.

Me too! I was curious about the breed, so I looked it up, and I discovered it has a fascinating, albeit tragic, history. It's one of three dog breeds indigenous to Korea and has been around for a couple thousand years. The name Sapsaree/Sapsali means "one who wards off evil spirits", and they are considered to be exceptionally loyal.
In Silla, they were only owned by royalty and aristocrats, but during the Joseon era, they became common throughout Korea. However, their numbers dwindled drastically during the Japanese occupation as they were killed to make coats for Japanese soldiers fighting in Manchuria. By the 1980's, there were only eight Sapsarees left in Korea and they were on the verge of extinction. But, as happens in many a drama, a heroic individual appeared and saved the day (or rather, the breed). That story can be found here:http://www.globalanimal.org/2011/09/27/sapsarees-one-man-saves-rare-asian-dog-breed-from-extinction/23884/

It's really interesting that Hwi-young is someone with medical background, whereas in the present time Seol is the one with medical expertise. And I also noticed how Hwi-young said that he didn't see Soo-hyun as a woman. It's fascinating that Seol finally made her clever comebacks by saying the exact same thing to Se-joo, even if that was 86 years late. So many things they said or did seems to transcend time, and I can't wait to see which action and saying would make a comeback in the present time.
On another note, Se-joo and Ji-seok's bickering about their first meeting was pure comedy gold. But at the same time, we also get to see why their relationship last for a long time even when Ji-seok seems to only care about how much money Se-joo can make. They were refreshingly honest and blunt about what they wanted and expected from one another. And even if it all started from very superficial reasons, it somehow transform their relationship into a genuine one.

I love the hand-on-forehead scene! It fits the poem so perfectly ✨ I have a question though. The scene where Soo-hyeon kissed Hwi-young/Se-ju to conceal themselves from the Japanese cops, did it actually happen? I assumed it did, but the hair and outfit points to Se-ju. So, was it all just Se-ju's imagination, or did he picture himself in place of Hwi-young? I'm confused as they did not enter the club together after the supposed kiss and also because neither of them acknowledged the kiss. Is this just some editing inconsistency or would show explain it in future episode?

IMHO, i think it shows that the lines between the present and the past are blurring for Se Ju. The scene might be one of the scenes that happened in the past. But hhe's confused, lost and unsure what's in the present and what's in the past since all seems like a big mix up for him. Thus, he agreed to write the novel since he wants answers to his confusion.

First of all, while everyone is doing a good job, I can't help but love Go Kyung Pyo- he is killing it as the funny ghost-in-love! The drinking scene where she falls on him- so many emotions flashed through his eyes and my heart skipped a beat on his behalf. He has come such a long way after so much hard- work. Whenever I think of GKP, his tears on hearing that he is finally getting some sort of recognition (on hearing the news that he is being kidnapped in Youth over Flowers) always comes to mind. I feel so proud of him!
Han Se Joo's scenes with the dog were hilarious. And I love that Gyeon- Woo got more scenes because I was scared that we won't be able to see the fluffy thing after the last episode!
Oh and Seol and Bang Jin are so cute together. I am happy that shows nowadays are also focusing on female friendships rather than just bromances (which I always love though).

Both YAI and LSJ have impeccable dialogue deliveries (especially at the end of episode 8. OMG--It's textbook perfection..I just can't stop raving about that epic scene). A lot of actors and actresses got criticized by Knetizens for their pronunciations and intonations , because there's no subtitles when dramas are aired on TV. As much as I love the episode, I feel like the drama is being a bit stingy with the 30s scenes. I wish we could have more (or maybe it's just me being greedy of Hwi Young hee)
The parallel characterisation of the 30s and the present time were very obvious and interesting. Both Hwi Young and Se Ju were lonely people who don't have families anymore. But while Hwi Young has his friends, Se Ju in contrast did not trust anyone and live alone. No wonder Jin Oh noted how he has changed in that sense, and it breaks my heart when Jin Oh realised that. Those puppy eyes reallt gets me

Yes, the writer is so stingy with her 30s scenes. I would love to watch more of them.
I love Yoo's crestfallen expression too, when he realizes that SJ has changed. However, the past SJ and the present are two different people, so he can't expect them to behave in a similar way. I love how he still remembers the past SJ as if it was yesterday, and how he has the present SJ to juxtapose his behavior with.

I could totally imagine being him stuck in the typewriter, and finally able to free himself, found his bff, excitedly wants to get close to his bff, asked for his help and being unceremoniously rejected. And realised that his now bff was nothing like his then bff. Oh the heartbreak!

He nail the emotion killing the cat when it's happened, so yeah, It's credit to the actor he make it so creepy despite it's happened off screen. I've never seen Si Yang to be this decent showing emotion.

I think this episode is about SJ questioning his purpose of writing. He's been writing for money but now he started figuring out what writing is truly for, what kind of writing that will make him happy when he writes. And while Seol is his catalyst to rediscover his idealism, Ghost Yoo is his only way to go back to his root, as SJ said, "to make the fresh start as a writer".
I know it's overused BUT Yoo Ah In as 1930s Hwi Young is truly gorgeous! Finally we got to know more about his background. Surprised that he was a medical student, on top of that he was one of the Resistance. The whole wound tending scene is so beautiful. Major aww to ghost Yoo's puppy face. Laughed hard seeing Han Sejoo doing his new gardening hobby, LOL at "the flashback" fighting with his publisher. Feel bad and funny at the same time for SJ since he had to convince Seol that he sees ghost. Seol and Bang Jin are friendship goal. And wow, Baek is such an A**hole he talked rubbish about SJ to Seol, plus he's one creepy stalker.
Yay I love the ending when SJ came to the rescue! *applauds alongside Ghost Yoo* Thank you, Ghost Yoo's childish and crude condition, and thank you umbrella for making a sweet SJ-JS moment!

it was never overused to say Hyu Young is truly gorgeous. He's so good looking to the point that you can't look elsewhere when he's on screen.
And I think we'll have the same remark on how beautiful he is in every episode's comments. Not that I mind. :)

As much as I believe that Yoo Jin Oh like Jeon seol, I'm starting to think that he is playing cupid on them at the present time. Maybe it was because it didn't end well with them in the 30's? Anyway, this drama is just superb! I know it so when I always check how many minutes more is left for the episode. This means that I am hoping for more! ?

I feel like Jin Oh needs to realize that Se Ju and Seol are not their past selves... They maybe their "reincarnations" but they're not not the same people.
It kind of irked me a bit when Jin Oh was trying to get Se Ju to continue writing the novel for the sake of friendship. You may remember everything but Se Ju doesn't he doesn't know about your friendship. Also when he called Seol his woman again, she's not her past self...
Aside from that I really do like his character. You can tell Go Kyung Pyo is enjoying this role... And can I just say Taemin is one creepy m*****f****r.. I wouldn't be surprised if he was reincarnated from the past. He was probably a traitor... ??♀️??

Jin Oh was more like a tragic character to me. In the present time, he's a ghost and the only life he has was in the past. And in that past, those two were his best friends. It's kinda sad that he believes that regardless of time, he would still know them, would still be the same best friends that he ever had, which is why he remarks that he wants Se Ju to continue writing the novel "for friendship". Sadly, he's finally faced the hard truth that they might have the same face and interest, but they are different individuals now. It feel like he's stuck in the past while everyone else have moved on. T___T

Yes, I do have the same feeling for Jin Oh. He is stuck in eternity while his 'friends' are living their new lives. Though they might still have some fractions of their pasts, my feeling did agree with that of SJ when he said he was living his 'this life'. And that scene when Jin Oh asked SJ to continue writing their novel for the sake of 'friendship' and was rejected is one of my most tragic scenes in this show. I really felt sad for Jin Oh. KYP really nailed it.

Se Joo should've proved Ghost Jin Oh's existence via Bang Jin. Jin Oh previously told Se Joo that Seol's friend can also see him. It was precious how Se Joo clumsily switched from banmal to jondaemal. "Nan... ah, Jeoneun." I love how Seol defended Se Joo to Bang Jin even though Seol was the one who badmouthed him in the first place. Aww at these best friends. I teared up watching them tear up over their childhood memories.
Hwi Young and Soo Hyun fight like cats and dogs. You can cut their sexual tension with a knife when he treated her wound. Dr. Hwi Young is hot. I hope Soo Hyun gets hurt more often.
My favorite scene from today was Ji Seok retelling his first meeting with Se Joo while changing all the facts. Thanks a bunch for the recap, gummimochi!

I think Taemin is a reincarnation of Jinoh's dark side that we have not seen yet. He may be the present day incarnation of another writer from the 1930s but no author other than Hwiyoung and Jinoh have not been mentioned so far, and we can see that Hwiyoung was the one who had the talents and the love (Soohyun seems to be closer to him) out of the two friends.

Tae-min is starting to be really creepy...just like his mom. He is obsessed with SJ and whenever he is spitting some bad remarks about SJ I assume that is actually something he did himself like when he said SJ always wanted what was his. I wonder if he was always like this or if his mom pushed him to be like this. Mr. Baek was probably not helpful as a father or husband...

I just finished watching this episode and I absolutely, absolutely love how:
1. we had a lot more 1930s scenes and more story! Se-joo was studying to be a doctor but left it to pursue writing when he's almost done (i thought that was brave of him too, pursuing your passion, i mean)
2. hilarious Se-joo looked liked in this episode (i swear my cheeks are still aching)
3. Jin-oh had that moment with Seol (i was sad for him but was also happy with that scene where Seol fell on his chest!)
4. Se-joo decided for himself. Again, it was courageous of him, even if he had a lot of questions, he decided to face it head on. And I'm really excited to see his & Jin-oh's dynamics when it comes to writing.
Jin-oh telling Se-joo he can't quit no matter what he finds out had stuck to me & had me wondering what it is he's still keeping. I'm also curious about that "what if" he said to Seol. And yes, I abhor Tae-min but I also think his character plays an important part in the story of the three, whether in the past or present, and we'll just have to wait how it unfolds. For now, I'll leave and watch ep8! Thank you for the recap @gummimochi!! ❤️

My heart broke for Jin Oh when Se Ju rejected him for the last time. Although I still think he needs to realize that Se Ju might be a reincarnation of his friend Hwi Young, but he is not the same person anymore. But I totally understand why Jin Oh felt that way, and Go Kyung Pyo was just marvelous in showing such raw emotions and I am loving him even more.
On the other hand, I equally love writer Se Ju, grumpy Se Ju, diva Se Ju, depressed Se Ju, confused Se Ju, childish Se Ju, farmer Se Ju -- all of Se Ju. Yoo Ah In is definitely making me feel a lot of things.
