Cast changes and a new character for Age of Youth Season 2
by girlfriday
Ryu Hwa-young, Park Hye-soo, Han Ye-ri, Park Eun-bin, Han Seung-yeon
A second season of JTBC’s sleeper hit drama Age of Youth is in the works for a broadcast later this year, and it’s been announced that there will be some changes in the cast lineup for the sequel. We’ll be introduced to a new character in the house, while Ryu Hwa-young, who played prickly Kang Unni in the first season of the show, will only be returning in a special appearance capacity for the second season.
The low-key youth drama about friendship told the stories of five college roommates living together at the Belle Epoque house, and the rest of the cast include hardworking eldest unni Han Ye-ri, lively social butterfly Park Eun-bin, perpetually-stuck-in-a-bad-relationship-girl Han Seung-yeon, and wallflower freshman Park Hye-soo. As of now, these four actresses are expected to reprise their roles for the second season, though no one has inked any final deals yet. Writer Park Yeon-seon and PD Lee Tae-gon are staying on as well.
Ryu Hwa-young, meanwhile, will be written out of the central story and only appear in one or two episodes. PD Lee Tae-gon stated, “There are characters whose stories were completed in Season 1 and characters who still have more story left to tell, and in Ryu Hwa-young’s case, her story is nearly over so it will be difficult to tell more of it in Season 2.”
He continued on to say that they wouldn’t be getting rid of her character altogether: “There will probably be about one or two episodes in which she has storylines, but she won’t have a story that continues on for all twelve episodes.” In her place, the Belle Epoque girls will be getting a new roommate, though for now there are no details regarding the new character.
Producers are saying that this was discussed as a possibility back when the first season was ending, but it’s hard to ignore the timing of the announcement, after old scandals have recently resurfaced concerning Ryu Hwa-young’s idol days as a member of girl group T-ara and her controversial exit from the group. I don’t think the story will suffer in any way, since the drama was already so episodic in nature and roommates moving out or graduating is a pretty natural progression in a college sharehouse situation. As long as the camaraderie (and Park Eun-bin!) remains, I’m good with reshuffling the cast and shaking things up with a new roommate or two.
Age of Youth Season 2 is tentatively planning on an August broadcast on JTBC.

how is her story finished? She did make a turn, but now she has to stick with her choice. must be a rather bumpy road compared to her former lifestyle. ignoring a great story potential because of an OLD scandal is so short-sighted.

I agree. Kang Unni was one of the more refreshing characters I've seen on a Kdrama and the group dynamics would be different without her. The plot did take a turn in the latter episodes of Season 1 (I especially did not enjoy the nonsensical chase scenes with the old ahjussi, but that's the writer's fault).

Well, it would have been an ~OLD~ scandal if Hwayoung herself didn't keep talking about it five years after the fact. And the problems continue, considering how she responded on Instagram.
It's sad for the drama, but I guess you reap what you sow. Hopefully the drama can still have engaging group dynamics and I wonder how a new character will shake things up!

Yeah, as much as I loved her and her character in Youth, she needs to learn to just stop talking. A part of me thinks it's admirable of her to stand up for herself and speak her mind, but another part of me just wants her to lay low and do her thing and not comment further because I kinda doubt that their decision to exclude her from Youth 2 doesn't have anything to do with all the hullabaloo that's been going on...

What did she "sow" exactly? I don't mean to derail the thread, but I don't understand why people are angry at her for trying to defend herself on Instagram, when this Kim Yoori guy goes on national TV and suddenly throws out this huge smear against her after 5 years. What he did is intentionally smear someone on national TV. That is a lot worse than anything Hwayoung ever did.

Well...Hwayoung apparently lied about being bullied (and injured) in her girl group, so she basically smeared all those members and their careers have all been tanked because of it. The reason why people are speaking out against her is because she also keeps on talking about and furthering her lies/has treated them in some disrespectful way or another.
At least this is what I've gathered.
So...yeah :/ Not really a black and white situation. Mess all around though.

First off, how do you know she wasn't bullied? You weren't there and neither was I. Second, when did she lie about being bullied? She never said anything about this matter.
This scandal arose because
1. T-Ara members badmouthed Hwayoung in public tweets, and
2. The CEO of the company fired Hwayoung from the group.
NOT because Hwayoung said she was being bullied.
These people need to take responsibility for their own actions. They reaped what they sowed.
Blaming Hwayoung for not doing enough to defend T-Ara against the bullying rumors is ridiculous. Hwayoung has ZERO obligation to defend a group that badmouthed her and kicked her out.

March 18, 2017 at 8:16 AM
Maybe a moral obligation? Given that her former co-workers got continuous death threat and national opprobrium. Normally as a human when someone you know is subject to a perennial verbal abuse for 5 years, at some point you step in firmly, even more if you know the accusations are false. And even if you don't like them. Not bearing injustice is a normal reaction.
Instead she went to Taxi and she cried crocodile tears. The Taxi's productor even said he invited her to give her a chance to clear up Tara's name once and for all. But she went astray and her and her sis did their crying act who ultimately peace her former staff off.
And it's not the Tara's scandal who make her fired, but the shampoogate and the insulting way she replied. It was a demonstration of her character. After Taxi, people was still willing to work with her, but she handled the aftermath like a fool child and now, it appears that Tara members may have a valid reason to badmouth her, even if they should have keep that private.

@Sea: All right, I'm on no one's side here. And I said that's what I've gathered not that it's the facts so pardon me if I said something wrong.
I'm still here for her to get out of this as I think she is talented and can go far, but I can understand why her career is taking a hit right now is all I'm saying.
It's still a mess and still not a black and white situation any way you look at it.

She brought it upon herself, though. It didn't start with what Kim Woori said, the scandal reopened after she guested in the show Taxi, still talking about how she was a victim and all.
That pissed a former staff who telling her to stop lying since it's been 5 years already. And then people finally start listening to what the staffs have been saying for the past 5 years... that Hwayoung is a complete snake. Then Kim Woori weighed in. Hwayoung responded back with a rude attitude, and the other former staff came out and confirming how she treated her rudely, she even made one of the staff resigned because of her verbal abuse.
If she weren't talking about it on the show Taxi, none of this would happen. I'd say this is karma. Eunjung got fired from her show too because of Hwayoung...

No, she never said she was a victim in Taxi. Don't know where you got that. She said that they were all young and inexperienced and the situation could have easily happened with any group.
Secondly, even T-Are members have acknowledged they made mistakes, so why is Hwayoung not allowed to bring up what happened to her? It seems a lot like victim blaming.

I also think it's pretty naive to believe the T-Ara staff, who have a vested interest in siding with their boss and company.

Its an old scandal but new evidence just recently came to light. Also, the controversy is old but not dead because the scandal and mbks crap management ruined t-ara, who was at the peak of their popularity when it happened - they were probably the 2nd or 3rd most popular after SNSD and 2NE1. They're still followed by bullying rumours to this day, even if it gets cleared up its too late, they've lost 5 years of peak time - thats the lifespan of an average kpop group.
Meanwhile, Ryu Hwayoung has gone on to make a successful transition to acting, in large part due to the public's sympathy from the scandal, and she hasnt exactly kept silent or copped to her role in the incident. Imagine if recent reports were believed at the beginning of the scandal - she'd be over.
I like her as an actress and I loved her as Kang Yina and I havent heard any newer rumours of bad behaviour post t-ara but I don't oppose cutting her out due to her past poor behaviour (and her poor response to recent news) - especially when one of Age of Youth's most prevalent themes is female friendship.

I don't buy the whole "successful transition to acting, in large part due to the public’s sympathy from the scandal" bit. That perception if anything probably explains why she's acting out all the time as it seems like everything she does is in the shadow of T-Ara. Dramas require way more commitment to support than music. They have to tune in for like two hours a week and frankly, if the acting was bad, she would have been called out for it. That hasn't really happened. She was praised in both Ex-Girlfriend Club and Age of Youth. Perhaps she had more fans going in that an average actor/actress but that would soon change if her acting sucked.

I agree wholeheartedly, @redfox.
Kang Yi-na was my favorite character in the drama. And you're so right: her story is FAR from over. With her recent life-change, you could write an entire drama about just Kang Yi-na and it would be entertaining. Also, I definitely got bi vibes from Kang Yi-na (especially between her and Jung Ye-eun), and I was hoping that Age of Youth 2 might give us a plot line about Kang Yi-na dating a woman. AAAAAAAAAAAGH I am so sad she's leaving. :'(
This is not to slag on the other girls, because I love them all, but I am really disappointed that they are cutting her character. Plus, I thought Ryu Hwa-young was an amazing actress in Age of Youth, so we'll also be losing a really skilled cast member.
What did the actress do that is so bad? I don't follow K-pop, and when I've looked into the scandal, it seems to have roots in another scandal that happened a while ago, so I can't really follow the throughline.

Hee! Naw, you are definitely not the only one. I have seen lots of comments that talk about the constant fights between those two being very"lovers quarrel"-esque.
I will confess that I don't actually ship them though. I do think they might be attracted to each other, but I don't think that they would be good in a relationship together.
I was kind of hoping that in Age of Youth 2, Kang Yi-na would realize that she was attracted to ladies. I didn't even need her to end up with a woman (I actually really liked the expected storyline of her and her male sex-worker friend getting together [plus I reeeeeally doubt that K-dramas are ready to show a female/female relationship]), but I would have loved a storyline where she figured this out about herself -- maybe had a crush on a woman -- and talked to her roommates about it. Or they could have gone whole hog and had her date a woman. Now we'll never have thaaaaaaaaaat (*sobs*).
Man, I'm just so disappointed. :(

There was a kiss between two actresses in the drama "Seonan girls high school investigation". I didn't watch the drama but I remember that scene making headlines because it showed a romantic relationship between two girls.

@Blueribbon I also haven't seen that drama (yet), though I was aware of the lesbian kiss.
Unfortunately, the show received a warning from the Korean Communication Standards Commission for that scene (https://www.soompi.com/2015/04/23/seonam-girls-high-school-investigators-receives-warning-for-lesbian-kiss-scene/). We've seen some plot lines featuring gay men in dramas, but it seems like showing two women in a homosexual relationship is still taboo for some reason. :(

Basically, about five years ago Hwayoung and her twin sister were members of T-ara, probably the third-most popular girl group at the time. In 2012 during concerts in Japan Hwayoung injured herself in rehearsal and was taken to hospital, where she was told that the injury was minor and would not need a cast or crutches. She demanded them anyway, and pictures emerged of her limping through an airport supported by managers. She also missed their next concert. Speculation began to spread, and Hwayoung and her sister insinuated that they had been bullied by other members of T-ara and that was how she had been injured. Netizens ate this stuff up (particularly I-netz with the help of NetizenBuzz who got huge amounts of traffic out of this) and T-ara tanked, ruining the other member's Korean careers. Hwayoung and her sister span the public sympathy into a career, appearing frequently on variety shows to cry about how awful everything had been. All the while, T-ara's agency, MBK, said nothing, and concentrated on other groups.
This year Hwayoung did the same on Taxi, and enough was enough. A member of T-ara's staff came out to say that Hwayoung and her sister were the ones perpetrating the bullying. Images emerged of Hwayoung walking unaided right before the infamous airport picture was taken, and a manager stated that Hwayoung hadn't missed the concert due to illness; she just didn't bother going, and went to a nail salon instead. Screen captures from conversations with other members showed Hwayoung and her sister threatening other group members (her sister said she was going to scratch another member's eyes out). From all accounts Hwayoung seems to have been an awful person - recently stylists from Seoul's top salon said that she called them Shampoo. In response to all this controversy Hwayoung has stuck to her guns, denied everything and lost every shred of sympathy the public had for her, and T-ara has announced a comeback.
The thing is, if Hwayoung had kept her mouth shut and not banged on about the scandal all the time, she would have gotten away with it. But she she couldn't, and here we are. This is nobody's fault but Hwayoung's.

I always feel like Age of Youth is meant as a vehicle for idol actresses with the characters tailored around themselves. Hwayoung has always been good, but Seungyeon and Park Hyesoo did so much better here compared to their other projects. So I dont mind other idol as long as the writer is the same haha

I agree there's a double standard but the difference between Hwayoung and say, Lee Byung Hun is that Hwayoung's scandal directly relates to her professionalism on set and with staff which directly impacts the filming of a drama. LBH is a douche but he still performs well on set and does his job. What he does once the cameras stop rolling is a different issue entirely.

March 17, 2017 at 9:43 AM
But we don't know whether she was unprofessional on set or treated staff badly during the filming of season 1. In fact, they fully intended to have her reprise her role before the scandal happened. It seemed she got along with her co-stars and there weren't any rumours of discord. I think they dropped her because her scandal got too big and she did not address it gracefully either. Maybe they were afraid people wouldn't watch the drama with her controversy being so fresh in everyone's minds.
To be fair, Lee Min Ki was dropped from his drama too after his scandal. Granted, his case was more delicate for various reasons. But Han Ye Seul was able to come back and lead dramas again after her attitude controversy a while back. Lee Da Hae too. So I don't think it's necessarily a double standard. I'm sure Hwayoung will be able to get other acting jobs in the future.
Another reason Lee Byung Hun has no problem getting work is because the movie industry isn't as adamant about a squeaky clean image and he's an established actor. Not even his most ardent haters can deny his acting skills.

If we're talking about the characters who's their stories over then it's Park Hye So's character she solved her taruma from the past and found a new love.
Kang Ha Na's character still didn't find her path in life she just found new job, she started learning bit she still needs more things to do and didn't find new love which was hinted for her friend, i am not a writer and i can think of many stories for her.

The new girl is likely the ballerina whose story wasn't explored in season 1.
At first, I thought the changes were motivated by the recent events regarding Hwayoung's former group, but I don't know why, I believe it was something already planned by the channel. Kang unnie was one of the most interesting characters, but her story of survival and with the daughter of the bar ajusshi gave her a huge focus on season 1. It's only needed to show that she went on keep up with her plan of studying and working on a clothing store.
That's why I fear Jin Myung's story will be shortened too, because alongside Kang unnie hers was the most interesting, in my opinion. Though all, we still need to see whether she will work in a huge company + her graduation. I highly doubt her mother will be released from prison, but let's see when the shows airs.
Let's face it, Ji Won and Ye Eun will probably have a huge focus, since it's important to explore Ji Won's character – other than being a funny girl and a compulsive liar / "boy crazy", nothing truly personal was shown about her – and Ye Eun process of healing from an abusive relationship is extremely important to give a lesson to viewers.
I believe Eun Jae's anxiety would be really well explored with the involvement of the new girl, whoever she is.
Other themes I think it would be interesting are eating disorders and asexuality, which aren't usually seen of young oriented shows.
Sorry for the long comment, I simply love this show and I wish I could write something as good as Age Of Youth someday.

That's a great catch about the ballerina roommate. I heard season 1 was supposed to be 16eps so maybe the writer had to discard some of the ballerina storyline. And the cast change wouldn't be so jarring if they continue her story.

Kang Yi Na is among the reason that drawn viewers to watch this drama, but she is not the only reason. Besides, Hwa Young already attached with current weekend drama that possibly will end around September this year.
Honesly I hoped the writer will replace Jung Ye Eun with other character. She was the only character that I didnt care due to the mediocre potrayal by Han Seung Yeon. Maybe just make these two characters do special appearances in one or two episodes. I dont mind to see this drama introducing new characters, except Han Ye Ri and Park Eun Bin characters. Eun Jae's(Park Hye Soo) story I believe also already finished but I dont mind to see her around in season 2.
Whoever the new actressess will join, I hope someone who can act. If the want to cast idol, I hope she is someone like Eun Ji or Soo Young.

Karma is a b*tch. She reap what she sow.
Finally after 5 years long , the truth is out .
I don't even know if my tears are joy or sadness.
I feel really sad for T-ara . They were the top of the top girl group where their future seem to be so promising
It's all ruined by the two snake sisters (damn manipulative and acting like victims while they truly the real bully), very terrible management (the CEO is good friend with HwaYoung's father and her family is wealthy- the reason she got so many movie/drama offers after the scandal) and the worst was the witch hunt from the netizens and the media.
They were so mean and cruel spreading hate and lies . So many staffs, friends and co-worker come out to defend T-ara but not a single person want to believe in them
They want to find someone to hate, to destroy , to hurt to make their life seem better . Everything was a mess and so painful
Even now, when the truth is revealed, the damage is done, their career in Korea nearly over, They hit rock bottom. Their image totally scattered
A lot of people choose to hate them even though they know the truth. Just because they want to hate them. Gosh.
Thankfully they promoted well in China and other SEA countries. That international support gave them strength to go through such a tough time. Lots of betray, death threats, insults ... My heart feels a bit broken just thinking about how much they suffered physically and mentally for the past 5 years.
I never forgot how Eun Jung got kicked out from her drama and found out through article :((
So unfair and sad experience
The amount of hateful comments and death threats sending to their houses, cars, company for the past years :((
When they tell the truth, no one trust them
When they stay silence , they being call liars, bullies :((
Got cut from a drama? It's only the start, Hwayoung ssi.
I admit you do have talent for acting. I do like your character Kang unnie in season 1. That's it.
Your personality in real life disgust me.
Greedy, rude, Arrogant, fake, treat people like trash and dust including the staff who care for you everyday.

I do agree that it was the Knetz who started the whole Hwayoung is being bullied by T-ara members after merely reading their posts on social media. They blew everything out of proportion, created taken out of context gifs, photos etc just to prove that they were right. Hwayoung herself never said she was bullied but who would have known she took advantage of the situation and acted like she was innocent and was a victim. After 5 years, we thought she'd be wiser but no. Now people who used to work with her are exposing the truth. Maybe they had had enough of her charade.

I'm also disappointed with the change, Kang's was a refreshing character that stands out in the group- I actually want the new character to be similar to hers. And I think HSY's is the one who got too big of a storyline compared to the others, it just dragged too much. But other than that I'm very pleased that the rest of the cast may come back! I hope that Season 2 will focus more on Ji Won and Jin Myung.
Especially Ji Won's character. Her character is so interesting and intriguing . Somehow the writing of her character only scratch the surface and not much depth yet.
Eun Jae's story is not much left to develop since her story was developed with lots of layers from beginning to end.
Ye Eun's story could be captivating if do right. Explore her life after the trauma in Season 1.
And they will have a new roommate. YAY!
Pdnim, I am strongly recommend Lee Joo Young for this role.
She is beautiful, unique, talented in acting despite only appear in some dras/movie
Everyone loves her in Weightlifting fairy Kim Bok Joo as Sun Ok right?
Want to explore more of Jae Wan and Sung Min in this season.
And I think we have new guy characters as well.

Honestly, I don't particularly care whether she was a brat five years ago - as far as we know, there hasn't been any trouble on-set with her as an actress and she spent years getting no work. I thought the mess with her former group was ridiculous, just as this is now.
I suppose that's the trouble with an industry that so openly prizes image over substance, and rewards it - mistakes are never allowed, and the ones who make them must pay with their lives/careers, thanks to netizen culture.

If it really was because of storyline then Han Ye-Ri, or Park Hye Soo would be the one making special appearence. If I remember correctly Han Ye-Ri's character was planning to go to America to study and what else does Park Hye Soo's character has to do now? She found love, friends, became more outgoing.
If they wanted to get rid of Ryu Hwa Young that much they could cast another actress for Kang Unni, why give such a weak excuse and write off one of the most loved characters?

The world is not that simple. For instance, check any Kim Young Kwang article on this site, you'll see plenty of "Korean drama fans" who are still very much hung up on something offensive he said in an interview years ago. Your simple generalization has no merit whatsoever. People might disagree with you not because they're Korean drama fans, but simply because they're different people with different values. I hope you don't have a problem with all kpop fans being lumped together with the more embarassing elements of the fandom either, since you're prone to doing the same.

For third parties-audience the thing we can judge is the talent this people present us.
She is a singer but can't sing? you have right to criticize her.
She is an actress who can't act? you have all rights to hate her when she gets cast in another major role.
If people used this mentality 5 years ago T-Ara would be on Exo's level

I apologize, but IMHO, it's a faulty comparison between this case and KHJ and any other case you mentioned. Look up logical fallacy if you have time.
While I understand that T-Ara has suffered, I beg you, please don't compare their suffering to what has happened to KHJ's girlfriend. It isn't fair to both of them. Totally different case.
And who are we to forgive or judge LBH? His wife? His mother in law? His God? Even if I dislike the way he treats his wife, it's none of my business, and I couldn't deny he is good in his job. Acting. Again, He's sleazy, sure. But, I don't find his case apple to apple.
And as far as I know, some ppl who don't like JSY, mainly doesn't like her acting. And I won't campaign against her because there's always a room for improvement. I even watch Flower in the Prison ignoring the public opinion about her acting (dropped it halfway because the story is boring).

I did not list those incidents as a way of comparison to the "degree" of which they have suffered or the circumstances involved. I'm merely pointing out the hypocrisy of "not holding grudges" as stated by the above poster. If you're more forgiving of one over the other because of your *personal* preferences then that is absolutely fine. Just don't go out blurting that other people "holds grudges" (ohmygod rolleyes, like whateves) when you do the same.
I don't even care what LBH, KHJ, RHY, or JSY do in their personal lives. It's whether how we completely disregard one's behavior because we sort of liked her or her character then not so much for others because, uhm, preferences?
That's a double-standard no matter how you rationalize it.

You really think this girl behaving badly to staff five years ago as an idol is on the same level to woman-beater and actual criminal Kim Hyun Joong? Try telling some non-kpop fan that with a straight face that, really just try it.
And since you are so hung up on Jin Se Yeon as to bring her into a totally unrelated post, it's a fact that she pulled that stunt not once but three times. It's almost unheard of for lead roles to do that, and I consider it unprofessional too. What's a 'smear' about stating fact? If Hwayoung was accused of bad behaviour on set in her acting career now, people would do the same about her.

She kind of is... accused of bad behavior to staff. Now. In the present.
So, you're more forgiving of Hwayoung because she's done something of 'lesser', uhm, emotional damage?
To be quite fair, that is totally relative to the individual(s) involved. I'm not saying that all three cases are comparable to Hwayoung's. What I'm pointing out is that there is an inherent hypocrisy of "not holding grudges" but absolutely doing it for some.
To be completely honest, I don't care about Hwayoung's behavior at all, nor does LBH, or KHJ for that matter. What happens in their personal lives is not my concern.

I don't understand the people who think Hwayoung isn't to blame for the T-ara scandal, or who still think there isn't proof that she was the real bully in T-ara. The chats of her sister threatening Ahreum were released, and her compamy admitted that Hyoyoung and Hwayoung threatened Ahreum. Not only that but people who worked with both Hwayoung and T-ara both when the scandal broke and now were saying Hwayoung was the one who walked out on rehearsal despite not being hurt, and was known to verbally abuse hair staff. You were all so quick to believe fan made gifs and pictures taken out of context, but when reputable sources come forward with the truth, all of a sudden it's like no one knows what happened? What about all the death threats and petitions T-ara received for writing some tweets aboutt hhow their lazy ass member wasn't pulling her weight? What about the damages to their careers and reputations that still haven't been recovered despite being vindicated? Kang Yina is a great character, but I would rather see Snakeyoung pay for her lies that she pulled off for years (and milked for years), despite being out on Taxi to end the bullying rumors once and for all. Hwayoung deserves to see her career tanked. I can't believe people would rather see a real bully play the Ka g Yina character than to see actual justice done for T-ara. Let her experience what Eunjung had to experience when all of her acting jobs were unfairly stolen from her. She deserves it all and more.
On a side note, I'm excited for Age of Youth 2, and I can't wait to see who they will unveil as the new addition to the sisterhood we all know and love.

You're generalizing the whole blame thing. Hwayoung may have acted poorly but that was something the company internally should have dealt with. Worst case scenario, she gets the boot.
The other girls put the company at an impossible crossroad by bringing their grievances public about a member not pulling their own weight. An ill-timed unfortunate event happened and the negative netizens smelled blood and feasted. There was nothing the company could have done from that point to possibly salvage the situation. Boot Hwayoung, make her a martyr. Keep her and she has bargaining power. Game over. Hwayoung probably felt wronged for being booted and rightly so. Couldn't let it go and here we are.
I don't think many are denying Hwayoung played a part in this and deserves some of the blame. All is silly though. She should have cleared everything up at the beginning or just let it die. Problem, humans aren't rational beings. She definitely could have handled the whole situation better and possibly saved T-Ara. But then I ask you, why when booted out over something that was clearly a misunderstanding caused by your sister trying to defend you would you do that? If you're faced with a decision to throw either your sister or a group you're no longer part of under a bus, with neither not being an option, which one would you choose?
The issue I have is with the people calling her a snake, placing the blame of T-ara's hardships solely on her, giving her the T-Ara hate treatment, and not owning up to the shitstorm they alone created, all derived from some second-hand accounts which do not take in consideration of all factors at play leading up to the fateful event, may contain bias, and does not take in consideration of all the emotions and events that followed.
So yeah, if the real reason why Hwayoung's character was written out was because of the scandal, I'll be quite disappointed. That said, after what happened in season one, it does make sense why her character wouldn't stick around. It just doesn't seem to be in her character to do so.

My most favorite is Yeri's character but i think her character is more likely finished compare to hwayoung's. At least they made her manage the problem regarding her mother and brother and her work in the restaurant, not to mention her lovelife with the chef. On the other hand, they can make hwayoung's character story in a way that will show her hardship in adjusting in her new way of life and more about finding her real self on what she really wants to do. Im not convinced at their reasons for removing her from the drama. They dont even think that there are people who dont really care about the scandal especially foreign viewers who are kdrama fans and not kpop. I really don't understand this about how even old "scandals" threaten to ruin someone's career five, ten years later. If she was a bitch five years ago, she paid the price by being kicked out from T-ara. But netizens just don't want t take responsibility for their own words and actions ruining the group after that so now they going after her instead. T-ara didn't deserve to be treated like that, but neither does Hwayoung deserve to be witch hunted now, as if that makes netizen behaviour from the old scandal ok or all her fault.
In other countries this kind of thing won't even be a career-ruining scandal, two big actors in my country actually had a fight on twitter becausethey had an affair and then she called him 'silly ex' but their careers are the same.

That's what I don't get. From my limited knowledge of kpop dynamics ( gotten from kdramas ha), I thought that contrary to what is shown in dramas, any idol whose giving attitude and causing huge company loss will be kicked out.
So my question is that, when she was being such a stepback for the group, holding up rehearsals and all, why wasn't she given the boot?
From what I've gleaned, someone was bullying another( who? ) and netizens picked on it, harped so much that the group was disbanded... I think.
Shouldn't the culprit be the one to suffer? Why the whole group?

My understanding is that her father was friends with the guy who owns/runs the agency. That's also how she got into the group. What this group went through and the hate sent their way was no small thing, but it had blown over. This gal's mistake was in thinking no one else would speak up if she spouted off again....that's what got her into trouble because it is apparent there were staff still upset with what went down.

A shame as Ryu Hwa-young (her acting) and her character were among the highlights of AoY.
There was still plenty of story-line for RHY's character (if anyone's character were "played out," it would be Han Seung-yeon's), so it appears that this is fall-out from the scandal having been brought back to the forefront.

Her role was my favorite in season 1, but I don't mind not seeing her again in this season. A new actress for a new character sounds exciting, I look forward to that!

I thought the fact that she was currently filming a 50 episode drama (Father is Strange) had something to do with it, but I guess not.

Dang, Kang Unnie was my favorite character in AOY. Why did her scandal have to blow up before all this? Well, Hwayoung was definitely in the wrong (and probably in some way the other T-ara girls, as well), but it just sucks that we won't get to see more of her character.
That said, I hope they cast someone good for the new character. Kim Seulgi would be an excellent choice!
