Who knew this show could become on my top 15 list of kramas i love(you see, my top 10 is so tight. I tried to squeeze in Bok Joo to no avail, and i have yet to watch it.).

So sad it's ending.

Whatever issues Moon Lovers had production wise, I think he improved during that filming process since it basically was a 6 month shoot. I didn't buy the romance story line, but any time he was with his brothers, I thought NJH was solid.

The scene between him and his aunt (mom), showed with the good direction and writing he can bring it. I'm not saying he needs to take the water god drama, but he can definitely branch out.

I hope he takes the role, or really, just any other drama queued soon because I can't get enough of him and his brilliance!!! Ahhhhhhh

This is such a. An endearing coming-of-age story about two really good kids. I think it is done well in the kdrama with realistic pangs of puppy love that is getting deeper and lingering emotions about the tangled relationship world of mother-mother-son-brother that hits Joon Hyung hard this round. Even toxic ex-girlfriend Si Ho makes a decision that must have been hard considering the intense pressure she is always under, but she did what she had to for her own sanity and health. Bok Joo is amazingly balanced and gives wise advice to Joon Hyung that he is smart enough to follow and make peace the best he can with both mothers. I love their sincerity and hard work in facing their wounds. I really, really want a kdrama happy ending for them!

Hello beanies, how's your first week in 2017?
Mine is one word: Sherlock!!!!!

So about Hwarang, may be it's the first kdrama where I see the male lead has different hairstyle in the first drama poster, official poster, and the actual drama. Has anyone notice that?
I will not say that his hairstyle in the posters are bad since I'm used with weird hairdo from my experience watching cdrama and jdorama (and movies too), but I can see that regular kdrama viewer will complaint a lot if they goes with that hairstyle. I still remember how LJS's hairdo in the beginning of Pinocchio, pre-make over, gather a fuss (I think it's actually cute, btw). Even when the character has brain surgery they still has their hair, no bald head.
Luckily for k-actor, they can keep their cool appearance (and hair) in whatever kdrama they play, no half bald head as in Sengoku or Qing period drama.
Or may be it's not the actors/actress but the kdrama viewer and netizen who will not accept them to look ugly in drama or even to look a bit "different"? No wonder korean drama award red carpet look boring. Can they be more open mind instead of stuck with one look "standard beauty"? Variety is good, being different means there's something special. Isn't it boring to see them visually look the same in every drama they played?

PS:
For whoever curious on jdorama or j-ent, here the list of some usefull blog dedicated on it:
- aramajapan, mostly about jpop,
- psycho-drama, mostly about movie and acting review,
- dorama world, mostly cover news on jdorama,
- jdrama weblog, contains jdorama recaps.

Anybody can suggest good blog on c-drama and tw-drama (or any gossip on the actor)?

I feel the same. Season 3 was the best for far so this is actually a let down.
But even I will only say that the BBC version is decent adaptation for me (but way better than american adaptation such as Elementary or Robert Downey Jr's movies), but it's may be because I'm a hardcore fan so I set the bar too high. I have the full set of the novels and reading it once a week become my routine activity since middle school to the point on turning me into annoying viewer when watching any adaptation. I hate when they turn Irene Adler to his love interest, it's downgrading for her! It's like turning her from Sherlock equal to merely his sexual attraction! Okay, may be I read Scandal of Bohemia too much and Conan Doyle intend it that way, but still . . .?

Required fields are marked *

@Yukari, no, I felt the same way with the way they portrayed Irene Adler, too. I didn't appreciate that they made Irene Adler a dominatrix rather than his equal. But, I love Benedict Cumberbatch ;(

The series 3 bored me. I don't know, maybe trying too hard to adapt 1880s to 2010s just too much. It lost some of its mysteries, witty and fun atmosphere from over all stories and characters.

Sadly, some of his recommendations aren't subbed yet.
The positive side is, he often touches some unusual Jdramas which aren't known by many.
He has given many good recommendations although his personal taste may not suit other's and his view on some Jdramas can be very biased due to his personal taste.

But see, I think BBC (and American stations) could learn a few things from K-Dramas. While waiting for new episodes of Sherlock and Dr. Who, I found K-Dramas. Now I can't remember the last time I watched something in English, ha.

I agree!

Yesterday I stumbled across a Facebook promotional posting for the new season of Sleepy Hollow. For those who don't know about the BTS drama there, the main female lead had a falling out with the producers and her character was killed off at the end of last season. Having been a fan of the show in the first two seasons, I can't imagine the show without her. For me it was all about Crane AND Abby.

But, no, the show has been "repackaged" and "retooled." And there were many comments in the responses about how excited people were about it coming back for a new season and how it was the best show ever (basically).

There were some naysayers who like me felt that the show has been basically ruined.

So, it was time for me to put in a promotional blurb of my own...for Korean dramas and specifically Goblin, explaining that Korean TV writers know how to plot a good store with a beginning, middle, and end.

Required fields are marked *

@LizJ, I stopped watching Sleepy Hollow 1 episode after Abby came back from the other side, because for me the story got nowhere too, bored and gave nothing more. The same reasons why I stopped watching Walking Dead, Blacklist. I watched Scream Queens and KDrama. Scream Queens because it just so absurd, over the top and nonsensical at all, thus made it so hilarious.

Right now, I am enjoying Hwarang, though not for the love-triangle, but more to the bromance and the intrigue. I am curious about Dwi Ji who became one of the great king (if I read correctly from the comments in Hwarang). He must be gone through a lot of hell and able to conquer himself first to become a great character.

0

For sure, I think they have a lot to learn. Starting with, possibly, that you don't need three years in between seasons of three episodes each. ^^ I brought that up with a friend and she said "but they're movie length!" and I thought of Goblin.

0

Required fields are marked *

I don't mind with the 3 years in between, each eps can be seen separately anyway and I know the overall story so it's just to entertain myself on watching another interpretation. It's nothing compare to waiting some manga which goes on long hiatus (I'm looking at you Hunter x Hunter! And Suzue Muchi-sensei, will you end your manga or not?!)

0

re: Manga hiatus. Oh my gosh I caught up on D. Gray Man years ago and have been patient, I feel, for it to restart (they have bad wrist problems). I think it's finally started up again, yay!

0

Watching something in English is soooo surreal to me now. I can't get over how many white people there are! And how much English. And how little nunmul there is, lol.

Srsly, though, there's a lot more meat (ie plot and character arcs) than in many an American show I have watched. No amount of special effects can replace characters you care about and a storyline that matters.

Oops, I meant "why is there no makjang..."

0

I need subtitles for English now--I can't understand everything they're saying otherwise.

0

BBC Sherlock is actually the only English series I'm following now, even I stop Dr. Who. I don't remember when the last time I closely follow american series, I guess it was back then on the first two season of Hero. The maximum for me now is only watch 5 eps per season (wikipedia has the summary btw).

Regarding the hairstyles, if you search on youtube KBS uploaded a Hwarang Behind the scenes and there was a segment where they mentioned it. The other actors thought it had to do with the story, but Park Seo Joon revealed it was because they couldn't find a hairstyle that suited him so they kept changing, haha.

First open thread of the year woohoo!
Loving Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim as usual and I’m definitely adding it to my list of favorite dramas. The only medical drama I’ve completed is Doctor Stranger (meh) so here’s to hoping RDTK will not disappoint (fingers crossed). Kinda sad that it’s ending soon but glad to know that there are so many new dramas to look forward to! Super excited for Introverted Boss, Missing 9, Tomorrow With You, Man to Man and Strong Woman Do Bongsoon. Which dramas are you most excited for, beanies?

As for Jdoramas, I’m still a newbie (I’ve only completed around 5 series) so thank you jojo, yukari, Afii, Sancheezy, John, alua, and junny for the detective dramas recommendation last week!

Have a nice weekend everyone!

Hi I am about to start some felting, but dropping by

the exhibition of Textile Artists Union is over and I fetched my 4 huge pillows today, almost got stuck in the hallways. My colleagues are such nice people, they helped me every way they could, making calls, helping me carry my stuff and driving me home. makes me feel a bit guilty. no, quite a lot. it is one of the moments when a person feels a little lucky.

since everyone is loving Weightlifting Fairy, I was wondering if you also know any South Korean sportsmen and if you have a favorite? Maybe there is someone who would also deserve to have a drama about them? who are your favorites from other countries? do you know any interesting stories with sportsmen?

I used to be a big fan of skiing and Björn Daehlie. From our own sportmen, I like Rasmus Mägi for his level-headed attitude and his respectfulness. he does hurdles and is the best sprinter we´ve had in ...well, ever.

Dramas: I finally had time for Age Of Youth. excluding too much sex talk, I dont even have to say I thought it was great. can I have a bigger girl crush of Han ye Ri though... her acting really has some sort of a magnetism that you never get distracted when she is on screen and never skip.

I am also rewatching Louie in bits when I am feeling tired.

I don't really know of/follow any Korean athletes, but from watching the Olympics last year I now know that they dominate at archery. It might be cool if there was a drama based on that, maybe it might get higher ratings than WFKBJ. lol.

Whenever the Olympics come around, I tend to follow Gymnastics, Sprinting, and Swimming primarily. I'm am now a big fan of Kohei Uchimura and Kenzo Shirai, Aska Cambridge, and Katie Ledecky and Fu Yuanhui respectively. Outside of that I used to follow Tennis from time to time.

I also haven't really watched many sports related shows or dramas, however, there is a Japanese figure skating anime that came out last year that blew my mind. It's called Yuri!!! On Ice. Japan has had a long history of making some pretty good sports anime if anyone is interested

0

Required fields are marked *

There are several top Korean women playing professional golf all over the world but possibly the best known Korean sportsman (besides the figure skater) is baseball star Hyun-jin Ryu, who is the starting pitched for the Los Angeles Dodgers! He has a great story and is always a riot to watch on Running Man and other variety shows where he has been a guest.

Hi everyone! How was your week? I started my first office job this week, it was pretty tiring but a great experience! Thank God it's Friday!

On to dramas, i LOVED ep 17 of #RomDoc this week! No wonder ratings jumped to 25%, everyone loves Kim Sabu.

That's the only korean drama I'm watching atm. Moving on to Japanese, I'm currently watching Yako no Kaidan (Fujiki) and Namae o Nakushita (Anne). Has anyone watched any of those? I'm quite surprised to find both of them really dark. Yako no Kaidan is a bit weird I think I'm dropping it soon even though Fujiki looks gorgeous there. I actually quite like dark Japanese dramas but Yano is a bit too weird for me.

Does anyone know any good Japanese psychology/dark dramas, especially ones with romance with it? i LOVED love shuffle :D

Gaiji Keisatsu : Dark, no romance, the murky world of anti- terror . Stars Watabe Atsuro and Ono Machiko

Uzumasa Limelight: A movie about an aging actor who specialized in samurai films as he comes to grips with a changing industry. Not dark, just a good movie.

Garasu no Ashi: Dark, dark, dark, romance of a dark sort

Kageri Yuku Natsu: A child is kidnapped, ransom is paid, but the child is not returned. A reporter starts an investigation.

Psychology dark drama with romance?
For starter may be try N no Tameni (not that dark though).

If you want to go dark, go all they way to jmovie. They can be really disturbing and I'm not talking about their horror movie. Here is some recommendation:
- Kokuhaku/Confession
- Dream for Sale/Yume Uru Futari
- Battle Royale
- Himizu
- All About Lily Chou Chou

I won't spoil you on the plot, but those movie will give you a glimse on how 'insane' jmovie can be.

I have seen Watashi Kekkon Dekinainjanakute, Shinain Desu. It's a cute drama, but Fujiki does not shine at all in this drama. I really liked the female lead though, she was so cute and gorgeous! As for the plot, I quite liked the detective bits and found it quite enjoyable :) but I wouldn't say it's an excellent drama. Maybe 6.5 or 7/10?

Happy friday, Beanies! Happy tenth year, dtamabeans!

NW: Goblin and Hwarang. Still have unfinished business from last year (Signal, Squad 38, Jealousy Incarnate (I KNOW!), Moon Lovers, King Louis, Wolgyesu, Blow Breeze). Been meaning to get back in the game, but Kim Kibum keeps on distracting me. -.-'

Lol. I've been a kdrama fan for a long time, and I like a considerable number of OSTs, but I've never been into Kpop or idol groups. I've only recently become a fan of SHINee (only group I like beyond a passing interest, actually) while watching Kim Kibum in Drinking Solo. So I basically have 8 years worth of material to catch up on. They kind of interfered with my drama-watching. Lol.

I'm about to do a rerun. But I have to finish WGM first. Haha! "Is this the reality you wanted?!?" Also, I loved Raising Idol and shipped Kibum with his chef noona so hard.

Seriously, though, I kind of feel sad I wasn't with them from the beginning. They're awesome people.

Regarding dramas, at least now I manage to watch Goblin. Over the past 3 months, I've only been able to watch episodes of Drinking Solo (second run) and Because It's the First Time. Because. XD am seriously contemplating finishing DotS (despite only being able to last for five episodes when it came out) solely to see the tofu. XD

0

Key's or Taemin's WGM? :-) I never finished Taemin's, actually, probably because of the controversy, or maybe the girl bored me... Key's was entertaining, but I will never believe that he was intimidated by a fashion show :-p . I presume you have also seen Wonderful Day ;-)

I am more troubled by dramas; I am too afraid of second-hand embarrassment. I was wary going into DoTS, but I couldn't *not* watch Tofu, my happy pill; I trusted Key, and he delivered :-) ; But Minho couldn't keep me watching To the Beautiful You, and I am still debating what to do about Hwarang. It was funny when I realised that Taemin was in Dating Agency Cyrano before I knew or cared who he was; if you haven't seen it, take a look sometime :-).

And yes, it is a pity we weren't around, but now we get to see how far they've come; I love their confident mature version :-) .

0

Key's WGM. Dear Lord, I really didn't like Naeun in Cinderella and the Four Knights, and she wasn't that much interesting during the couple of WGM cuts that I did get to see. One Fine Day was awesome. I love Onew and his toast song. Haha! Heck, to this day, I still don't know who I like the most: Key or Onew. Kibum has such an enigmatic, vibrant personality, and Jinki is a ray of sunshine despite (or maybe because of) everything he's been through. The other three follow close behind. I imagine those who have been Shawols for a while have been plagued by my predicament for longer. XD

Also, Hwarang is highly enjoyable. I now understand why they did not cast Minho as the spare dude, despite him having headlined several dramas already (also, I have not seen any of his other work but for Because It's the First Time. To The Beautiful You seemed like sacrilege to anyone who has ever watched the Hana Kimi j-dorama. Haha!)

0

Naeun was also in Twenty Again, and still not interesting... My favourite part about Wonderful Day was actually the beginning. Their reaction at being told that they were going to travel *separately* was at once hilarious and sad...

Haha but it's funny we have the same bias list. I think Onew is more complicated than he lets on, but you just have to love his weird humour and his contagious smile. Key is just personality goals. But I like them best when they are all together as a group; oddly enough I am not that interested in Jonghyun's and Taemin's solo careers. They are both immensely talented, but the spark is missing.

I'll have to check Hwarang then; I hope they have given Minho a role that fits him, as they seem to have done with the others...

0

High five! That is true. Onew's complex. He battled depression post-surgery, and I don't think that really leaves a person. He seems lonely at times even now, and he smiles differently these days compared to when they debuted. But man, when unabashed joy bursts out of him... He's a sight to behold.

Key is known as a social butterfly, but I think he's a lot more reserved with people and friends than what he seems. I felt sad watching his OFD episodes: it was like he desperately wanted to reach out to people but had gotten used to dealing with rejection often. Look at him latching on to Minho in England. I don't think that's 100% scripted. I saw a 10-minute clip (Key's story) on Dailymotion, and he really moved me.

Also, I liked a couple of songs from Taemin's solos, but I'm not as blown away by his solo. Jjong, on the other hand, is a poet. His Story Op. 1 album is personal and intimate, and I loved it more than the two he actively promoted.

BTW. Minho's role in Hwarang is perfect for him.

Lol. I didn't think I'd get this fascinated with a group after puberty.

Even before surgery there were references to him feeling the pressure of leadership and keeping everything bottled up, until he learnt to let go and make it easier on himself. And then some kind of fallout apparently happened in 2012. I suppose that was the turning point (I have all kinds of groundless theories, and apparently too much time on my hands :-) ). He seems to like his solitude; it must be exhausting to be charming and funny all the time :-p . But yes, he does look happier these days.

With Key's experience in London, I felt a little sad too, but I think the same would have happened to anyone. For all his exuberance, he must be quite shy underneath it all; it must be a little paralysing to find yourself in a place where you are no longer a celebrity, and have to strike up a conversation with strangers in front of a camera; not a great way to meet people. I am not surprised he sought out Minho in the end; he must have felt quite lonely. But I am sure, give him a week on his own without cameras, and he would be just fine :-) .

Haha yes, I am surprised at myself too, but it is not funny: I suddenly have the unreachable life goal of going to one of their concerts before they are off to military service, and/or disband; and time is running short...

True. Petitioning here. I don't even care how much I have to spend on a ticket, and I'm hardly loaded. T-T

Oh, and I want to watch Taemin's WGM. Skipping to the Key and Eunji portions. They're way more interesting. XD

0

I don't care how much I have to spend on my ticket, the ticket of whomever I need to enlist to come with me, the inevitable flights and accommodation, and the excuses I need to give at work should the concert happen in the middle of the week (why, Kcon Paris, why???) . That just means living on ramyun for the next six months and feeling like a true K-drama Candy :-p

For hopeless petitioning: My Music Taste ;-)

Just in case you're still here, omigosh! I'll get to see them perform in March! I mean granted, they'll only perform maybe five songs, tops, since other groups will be there, but omigosh! I can't believe they're coming here!

Weightlifting fairy Kim Bok Joo SWAG <3 will definitely miss this drama when its over. I dont usually rewatch dramas but I have a feeling this is an exception.

Hi! Happy 2017 guys, hope the first week of 2017 went well for everyone XD

Spent the week with all cleaning and cooking, leaving for two weeks really made the house messy and the fridge depressingly empty haha.

Yesterday i watched so many of Goblin bts & casts interview it was crazy. The casts are seriously funny, down-to-earth people i laff them all.

Managed to watch 3 eps of This week my wife have an affair (what a handful title u,u) and i love this!! Everyone is so good (Lee Sangyeob is hilarious) and wondering how they will treat the affair.

Leiden is annoyingly cold despite the sunshine and i hate being outside :( Stay safe and healthy everyone!!

Happy New Year everyone! Last year was my first year of watching dramas as they aired. It was a completely different experience from binging as the wait sometimes was unbearable. I'm a bit cautious of 2017 though as I've heard many people say that 2016 was a bit of an odd year in that there were so many good dramas that were released. I hope 2017 follows suite as I feel something missing when my favourite drama at the time ends, and am happy when another fills the void.

I'm also quite happy that I was able to find this website, and Soompi. I feel like I'm the only one in my circle that enjoys dramas, and even when I recommend shows to others, they aren't nearly as hyped/interested as I am. Just reading the comments here alone is quite fulfilling.

I have a question about the site though. Would it be possible to have a series recap after the final recap. I know the series is often briefly recapped in conjunction with the final episode, but I think it would be awesome for people who were late to the party to join in the discussion for how active or inactive it might be. I don't know if it exists, but I thought it would be cool to have an actor (both male and female) page. I know Soompi has both these things already, but I think DB brings something different to the table in terms of discussion. Maybe you could have an actor bio, breakdown, analysis thing. I guess the main reason why I'm thinking about this is because I'm slightly obsessing over Nam Joo Hyuk. Sigh.

Happy 1st week if 2017, hope this year gonna be better,
I only watch hwarang which make me happy,
Idk that the fighting boy and how they behave can amused me so much,
Idk if it just me or it fits my mood but all the confrontation in hwarang is followed by real action aka punch and kicking make me feel that the drama is alive, it so boyish and the character is distinguished themselves not just based on looks or similarity but their own idea as individual.

There's so many character interaction and I hope they keep it up cause it's a unique drama since I am on board with Sunwoo attitude towards life, want to see Sammaekjong journey to be the king, want to see how Suho and Banryu make up, intriguied by Hansung, the lovely Yeowol and Ahro position in society.

I think the filming is quite tiresome since there's a lot of activity but that exactly why I am enjoying it so much, they are moving from place to place, parading and felt real

Finally watched Kimi No Nawa/Your name,
I think it's as good as the review and it open up a whole new perspective of knowing thing, believing yourself and act on it, love the movie.

I found my drive and watched Stranger Things, another series that also as good as the review, love it and I am anticipating Season 2 if it exist,

I think I am gonna try General and I and Sherlock S4 for the next week,

Thanks, I watched the 1st season in 4 days because I enjoy it so much, there's this suspense when everyone is working to find the answer from the strange things they suspect.
Love how they used the kids as the main driving force, it feels different in a good way,

Just a question, do you think El will come back?
Idk if this again just my feeling but I am okay if she didn't come back,

I think she'll definitely come back, if the Eggo's are any sign. My guess is they'll focus the net season around finding her, then saving (or losing?) Will from whatever he got infected with. And I loved the kids as the main cast too--they all did a great job. And I love that they set it in the 80s sometime, it made the whole thing more interesting.

I just realised that my favourite new manga since last year
Totsuzen desuga, Ashita kekkon shimasu 突然ですが、明日結婚します (It's sudden but I'm getting married tomorrow)
will get a tv show on 2017,

I diligently buy the manga and hope for the anime but IDK what I feel about the drama adaptation,
I just hope it's good because the manga is about girl who really good at her job (she is the ace) but wants to settle down and be a housewife, she loves it,
then she met a guy (a newscaster/announcer who also good at his job) whom she loved but doesn't want to get married.

One of my favourite line from the manga is when the other perfect guy confronted her that her boyfriend didn't want to get married so they better break up and marry him.
Her quick response is that she doesn't want to just get married, it's that she wants to marry her boyfriend which make that other guy literally has no said in her relationship.

Good morning Beanies! Happy 2017! The year sounds so new and foreign now, but I'm sure we'll get used it soon.

I have to move away again today, since classes start up soon and I want to get settled first. I'm even less prepared this time than before, and I can see all the stuff I'll need to pack up all around me still. Pffft knowing me half of it will just be left behind and thrown away.

I finally separated my blogs, so the one attached to my username is now exclusively K-dramas and books. It's been a long time coming, but I've resisted because I didn't want to run two blogs. One was enough. I blame it on the New Year's resolutions.

Hwarang: Ok, does anybody else find the secondary puppy love for the queen sort of adorable? I can't help but think this drama is a strange mashup of Lord of the Rings (without magic) and a Knight's Tale. Because Soo-ho looks just adorable even if I'm terrified of the queen, and it feels very Aowyn and Faramir to me.

Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim: If the angst-buckets earlier is what brought on the adorable surgery team--and couple--then I'm ok with the angst-buckets. I do have one question about the rotating during surgery (and it could be a silly one): I know they do plan rotations... but would they plan to spin? Really?

Lobster: Tae-oh is now the best thing since ever. I remember being super impressed with JJH in the early episodes because she had such a range and no lines. But his character's just written that way! He doesn't have nearly so many scenes, yeah, but I'm still impressed. He just makes me smile.

Goblin: Now that I'm rooming with a good friend of mine, and she's almost caught up in Goblin, I foresee many fun nights in the future... Tonight.

And I guess that's it! I should really go and get ready for the day--I've started taking this Zumba-esque dance exercise class, and oh my gosh is it hard. Super fun, but hard. Happy Weekend!

I came across infinity challenge's latest performances. It was probably a festival to commence the year since it was posted on 31st dec. I first tried infinity/infinte challenge once but didn't find it that funny but the performances were great specially the one by Gaeko, Kwanghee ft. Oh Hyuk( who is a gem btw, why doesn't he get more osts to sing. I love voices like his).

Are there any other suggestions of such performances in infinity challenge or any good episodes. Since, RM will come to an end, I would need another show for laughs.

Infinity Challenge has their music festival every 2 year
as I remember on 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2015 when they collaborated with different artist and release music,
Oh hyuk also participated in the 2015

Another one is Infinite Challenge “Saturday, Saturday is for Singers (TOTOGA)” ,
they gathered the 90-s singer for a special stage, I believe it's on ep 410-411,
so they have Jinusean, SES, Jo Seung Mo, Kim Gun Mo and many more

Try the Infinity Challenge's wedding festival, it's super fun! Basically they are separated into few groups (and add real singers to each groups) and they crashed real weddings with their performance. I am not up to date with Kpop but after these episodes, I become a fan of Busker Busker and Lee Juck.

Ps: Yoon Do Joon and Lee Joon also became guest singers ?

I think this is a safe place to said this.
In my opinion what makes me feel not much going on in Goblin is because we predict everything from day 1 and it just that, like the show actually show all of that since ep 1,
so even if they made a discovery,
it didn't take me to wow but just something I already know, even without speculating much.
I also think the 1st love story going too fast, they fall in love with no history than just merely attraction but it presented as something out of fate binding something special,
I just can't buy it and the interaction is still not match.
Again this is not a me hating on the actress, I think it just didn't match,
happy friday,

It's true that Kim Eun-Sook isn't very subtle in her connections (or maybe it's the director, since a lot of the cues are visual too), and I do think that slows things down a bit. But I also think they tend to spend most of the episode in light humor and then hit us with a big development at the end. I don't think either are necessarily bad, it just makes it a different kind of story. For me it adds to the fairy-tale-esque tone.

I've had a harder time feeling our OTP's chemistry here too, but I was rewatching an episode with a friend the other day and totally saw it more. I'd say I'll rewatch it and take another look, but I don't think that will really happen, knowing me.

I complete agree. I dont understand all the hype and high ratings surrounding Goblin. I cant feel the main couple's chemistry and cringe every time they have a sweet scene. I keep watching thinking it'll get better and for grim reaper as well. he's my favourite character in the drama.

I don't quite cringe, but I've definitely seen some more sizzling chemistry than theirs (W: Two Worlds, RDTK). It just makes it a different drama ride for me, less cracky and more just fun.

0

Required fields are marked *

Somehow, over the last couple of weeks or so, I have totally felt the OTP as a couple, and they are well on my way to becoming one of my favorite KDrama fantasy genre couples. I think it's because the characters (IMO) really compliment each other, and while the set-up is fantastical, it seems so natural (again, my opinion) that their personalities would mesh together to become a couple.

Sizzling hot "I want to jump your bones right now" chemistry (like I Need Romance 3 and possibly parts of W) isn't what would be appropriate for this story. Discovering the love/partner of your life is what is appropriate in the context of the story, with the added complications of seemingly the entire universe being against you having that opportunity.

Required fields are marked *

That's a good way to put it, I like that. I can definitely see that the characters have a bond, a strong sense of "we're family". I'm just missing some of the butterflies I associate with the beginnings of love. Like I said, it's not a bad take on true love, just different.

0

Required fields are marked *

I have the same issue with Goblin. I think it would be better after the first episode if they kept to a strict one hour airing time which would force some discipline on the writer and the director. I thought it was a slow burn of a drama but it actually meanders into boring at times. And then, yes, most happens in the last 10 to 15 minutes.

So I'm sticking around, but I do hope intensity builds now that we're gearing up for the final few weeks.

Personally I don't hate on you even if we have different opinions. You've tried to be civil and respectful in this post, and that's the way to "converse" and connect with those who may have different opinions than you. It's a skill we could all likely stand to practice more, both online and in face to face conversations.

For me, the character that has really gotten the short end of the stick as far as character development in Goblin is Sunny. Hopefully, this is changing in this week's episodes.

Here's what I mean. We know little to nothing about her (current) life other than the fact that she apparently has no remaining family, is alone and lonely, and seems cynical, vain and a little shallow. She's got enough money to dress fairly decently and take care of herself, and to purchase a restaurant franchise and run it without making money on it.

While she's voiced her thoughts out lout a few times, they weren't very deep thoughts. I think (although not 100% certain about this), the three main characters have been shown with thinking about things with voice over, but not Sunny.

While in some cases, this type of character might be considered mysterious and intriguing. But (again, in her current life), we haven't been given anything interesting about her to intrigue us. Everything interesting about Sunny is related to her previous life.

Personally, I think it's a shame that her character hasn't been better developed in her current life. It wouldn't have needed to take up a lot of time to make her a more interesting character.

Question about Moon Lovers: The younger princes were like 16-18 years old at the beginning right?
So, was Baek Ah in love with his sister-in-law and contemplating marrying her at 12-13-14?

I know in the Chinese version everyone boys and girls married early but here...idk. They should have made it a platonic relationship. More believable for character and plot wise and perhaps better.

It's a bit late, but Happy New Year! Been away from db for super super long cause I've been trying to catch up on 2016 dramas but to no avail; I keep getting distracted and losing focus. Maybe I'm losing my drive again :(

Started on Solomon's Perjury during the New Year's Break, and I felt that it feels a bit slow, but I'll definitely continue watching. One disadvantage is that I'm really bad at faces, and the fact that the students are wearing the same uniform isn't helping me - I keep going back to asianwiki to match the names and the faces.

Still on Amachan, finally started on the Tokyo chapter. I'm so not into this idol thing, and I'm still not liking Yui...I want Aki to go back and dive for uni. Nonetheless, it's still addicting due to the length of its episodes.

Started on Police Unit 38 yesterday (FINALLY) and I'm getting kind of confused, but it's good so far. Hopefully I'll be able to complete it by tomorrow.

Just realised that I'll have at least 7 ongoing dramas during the next drama season:
1. Solomon's Perjury (ongoing)
2. Voice
3. Defendant
4. Introverted Boss
5. Chief Kim (maybe)
6. Rebel Hong Gil Dong (maybe)
7. Missing 9

Not sure how I will manage my time. What upcoming dramas are you guys most excited for? I'm especially looking forward to Voice.

University just started this week after the long break. So working, attending classes and watching dramas has definitely lessen my sleeping hours. Esp I watch the dramas raw and subbed! I know, I just cannot wait for a few hours for the subs. Also this is my first time to watch this many on-going dramas.

Anyways, much as I want to get more sleep I do not want WFKBJ and LotBS to end! And these two dramas had almost had the same theme every week, like kissing week, drunken week and this week was meet the mom week. xD

I miss haning out in the OT but haven't been able to due to work in a lng time.
Not much news happening here, though I'm currently down with a knee inury. Fun times. At least it let me chach up to dramas! How are you all?

Goblin: I love this show. Especially the goblin/reaper interaction. SO.MUCH.FUN! And I like that there seems to be some rules in this universe, even if all f them haven't been shown ut (in regards to the goblin's bride and drawing the sword).

Weightlifting fairy: I am lagging a bit behind on this drama. It's cute, but while I like it and watch it I'm not addicted.

The Miracle (2016): So I did see this webdrama although I initially felt a bit iffy about the plot. In the end it was qute, although I think they could have done more with it. Then again it was a fluffy thing that tried to have a STORY and yet not.

Hey Beanies!

I haven't been around Open Thread in awhile and decided to check in. Happy New Year everyone!

So this has probably been the fullest my drama watching schedule had ever been. I'm basically watching shows Monday-Sunday. Ridiculous, I know. I promised myself I would ease up on my drama watching this year because I have been on 10 for the past year. I will attribute that to the fact that I had just discovered Korean dramas though. lol

I'm a bit sad because Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo is over next week and I can't deal! I love this show to pieces. And Oh My Geum-bi! That little girl just warms my heart. The adults can kick rocks but that little girl is so awesome. She wrecks me week after week.

So this is what my weekly drama schedule looks like right now:

Mon/Tues: Romantic Doctor Kim, Hearing
Wed/Thurs: The Legend of the Blue Sea, Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo, Oh My Geum-bi
Fri/Sat: Goblin
Sun: Empress Ki (or whatever drama I want to watch that I didn't while it was airing)

It's pretty crazy I know! When the new dramas air, I keep saying I won't watch them all but I know that's a lie. Lol

Hi! Happy New Years!!

I can't wait to start some new dramas that are starting very soon while being hooked on Goblin and Weightlifting fairy and Legend of Blue Sea!

I'm posting for the friend of a friend...who needs help identifying a Drama.

This one seems vaguely familiar but I can't put my finger on it. Also I think the thing she forgot in the car was a planner not a passport from a hazy drama memory but I could be wrong!

"Well the only thing i could gather was this girl has this backpack, gets in a fight with some guy in the street, these 3 guys come up, and i'm not sure if they were kidnapping her or beating up on the guy fighting her, but she keeps dropping things. Another scene happened with this guy who just sits in this taxi, this girl had jumped in on the other side, the guy was like uh... hi? and she just jumps out after getting to some destination, and he finds her passport or something on the seat. After that i didn't get a chance to watch much more, and i haven't seen it since to get more info. I'm sorry for the vague information but maybe you can help?"

Let me know if anyone knows this drama!

Hi all:

Just looking in to say the only dramas giving me kdrama joy are/were: 7 First Kisses, Goblin, and Shining Eun Soo aka Still Loving You. They are simply perfection. Perfection of fluff (7 first kisses), perfect balance of silliness and angst (Goblin) and perfection of addiction (Still Loving You.)

I have so much joy especially with Still Loving You. Seriously good.

The others are okay (Weight-lifting), meh (Hwarang), uninspiring (Night Light), unaddictive (Legend of Blue Sea), or unfinished. Awaiting the new batches/season.

Have a great weekend, all.

Happy OT, beanies!

After reading the totally expected results of the various network award shows, I laughed so hard when I came across a post on Koala's Playground - China's Sohu Holds 2nd Annual Golden Kimchi Awards. The list for Worst Dramas went like this - 1. Moon Lover 2. UF. 3. Cinderella and the 4 Knights. 4. CITT 5. DOTS...Best part is that Top Quality went to Signal in 1st place and Dear My Friends in 2nd. Even shows like AOY and Beautiful Mind get mentioned for being mostly good.

I think this is one awards poll which I agree with the most!

Questions:

1
Any Korean entertainment dreams recently?

2
How do you feel about Netflix dipping into Asian entertainment?
Do you have any preferences of how it is done? - like the jdrama? Or is the tdrama better? Basic stories or complicated?

3
I asked this last week but only got 1 answer so I though I'd ask again.
How long do you keep coming back to OT? And does it depend on potentially continuing conversation?

Media this week

Korean:
ML - on ep 16
Didn't watch as such as last week. But omo, they killed Baek! I'm so mad, sad, jaded, you name it. But whoa is evil Hong Jong Hyun my aesthetic. Maybe I'll get to finish today.

Lobster - next ep 14
Behind again. I don't know if I suspect Chi Hyun or Nam Doo for the Joseon kill. Tae-oh is still such a sweetheart. I'm warming up to a loveliness between him and miss delusional, especially because she's not delusional when it comes to him because he gave her much reason to believe he's obsessed with her. "Saranghae, Noona!"

7 First Kisses - done
Minho's ep was disappointing but also cute. So I'd how I feel about the drama as a whole. It was an ad. We knew that. It told some funny stories. And she got a guy to progress with in the end.
If not for LEE MIN HO, I'd have chosen Kaikai

WF - on ep 11
Still so cute. I'm glad they are dealing with her depression/slump period so beautifully. Joon Hyung pretty much proposed and she was oblivious. Hopefully, I'll finish with everyone on Wednesday.
Jisoo puppa!!!!! Ftw! "Work oppa!"

FantasiC - next ep 12
Still watching for Jisoo & the ahjussi-deul.

Flower Boy Next Door Special - they made fun of the real-life consequences an accidental fall kiss would cause, concussion, busted lip, the like.
I think I'll rewatch this drama soon. It gave me such life back in 2013 when I was a bit lost.

Japanese:
Good Morning Call - next ep 6
Glass lip - next ep 3
My Little Lover - next ep 2
I like this drama

Taiwanese:
Miss in Kiss - next ep 7
I'm starting to become a real fan of this version.

Western:
Fuller House - next ep 9

Music:
Avril Lavigne

My Answers
1) I dreamt that Infinite was chosen to sing at a random event. The event wasn't related to them at all. My brother was arranging it. And it was in a performing arts theater, seats 1,000-1,500. The people were bored. It was like lectures about success in life or something. Infinite was there to sing a song to encourage us?!

Anyway, I freak out when my brother let's that slip 5 minutes before they are to perform. I start singing one of their songs (which may or may not be one of their songs, more on that later). Those around me look confused and move to enjoy it more alone.

I'm downstairs, looking into the main section through the wide entryway. And spot Infinite waiting a distance from me. One of them smiles at me and they get up to perform.

They perform in the entryway I was looking through. I'm singing, waving, fan chanting, all around freaking out. As they are dancing a few see me and smile, appreciating someone who knows them rather than the people who are just listening to the message of the song.

The audience claps. I clap, scream, all that. And Yook Sungjae turns to me. I give him a two hand heart. He returns it. Then I give him a finger heart. Before he can return it a band member hits him, to get him to look forward.

Then, the MC starts asking them what they enjoyed most about the trip to perform and performing. In English Sungjong talks about the American food. Minhyuk waves at me and mentions the enthusiasm at the performance. Kwangmin & Youngmin say one person made this a night to remember and do a two person heart to me.

They walk off. Sungjae high-fives me and, again in English, tells me I should hang out with the band before they fly back in 3 days. I promise I will. And my brother calls me to help count the money (don't ask me what the money is for. ?) I wave and all seven boys, including Mark & Jin, and their managers, Baro & Zelo, wave back. Sungjae smiles and does the call me sign.

Soooo what in the world was going on? That wasn't Infinite. That was Infinite, BtoB, Got7, BTS, Boyfriend, BAP, B1A4. I can't remember the song but I think it was Boyfriend's. Idk why they were called Infinite in my dream. At least the band mates stopped at seven?

http://pin.it/u1jXAwZ

Idk why they were in my dream. I don't think any of them have been brought to my attention in over a week. I know, other than BTS, I haven't listened to them in that long. They are just chilling in my subconscious.

Oh, and why did everyone understand the Korean song, but need their answers translated? The audience received 4 minutes of song/rapped Korean but can't process spoken? Gotta go to English for that?

Ahhh, dreams are weird.

Dreams! I had two in two nights! I think both were me taking care of BTS members in a mother hen kind role. Ah, I'm even an ajumma in my dreams. Sadly, because I didn't write upon waking, I only remember my very basic role, that they were all super sweet and funny, and that they wanted me to tag along everywhere they went as their sheild from mean antis. Ha!

As for how long I go back to OT, it's usually through the weekend.

2 How do you feel about Netflix dipping into Asian entertainment?

Hate it, but for reasons that may not apply to anybody else.
1: Netflix, Hulu, etc are mostly streaming, not downloads (let me know if I'm missing something).
2: I have a very unreliable cable/internet connection - usually at least 2 outages a day, and sometimes as many as 10. Thank you, cable company.
3a: I can download in advance when the line is working, then watch later even if it is down. ESPECIALLY if it is down and I can't browse anything.
3b: I can resume a download from where it died quicker than I can find my place again if I was streaming and the line went down (on a PC using chrome).
3c: If I like a show I can rewatch the downloads without having to worry about my stinking internet connection.
3d: So, I hate streaming.

@FanofLeeJunki'sMane - Hang in there. Often things turn around when you least expect it.

Also, we have a saying where I come from that "God knit you in your mother's womb." It means that even if your parents claim you were an accident or you feel that no one cares for you, hang in there because you have a destiny. You are not an accident.

And this week I heard someone say that you are not defined by your circumstances. So, even if things are not working out, I encourage you to know that your worth and value and uniqueness can not be diminished by the events and circumstances in your life.
Hwaiting!!

I'm sorry you're not feeling up to par.

I have winter depression aka S.A.D. from mid October to late January. I'm miserable everyday. And every year, I'm surprised I made it through with minimal damage.

Do your favorite things. Things that comfort you. Things that "give you life". That fangirl phrase mat seem ridiculous but sometimes it's so true. A show, song, movie can make that time feel livable.

My advice:
Find things that make you feel understood - depressing things

Find things that lift your mood - encouraging/heartwarming/inspiring things

Find time for you - a bath instead of shower, paint nails, bake, craft, handwash clothes something that gives you time to relax and think while doing mildly important things.

If you have things to do, write a list. Checking, scratching out, stars on completed tasks feels so good, can help have a content mood, if not happy

Move around/exercise - play an upbeat song and dance, play a sad song and stretch, play a ballad and interpret dance for your entertainment.

In my experience, it improves how I physically feel. Depression makes me sore, tired, and gives me aches - head, back, wrists, ankles, everything. Stretching helps and dancing perks me up.

Keep hwaiting, love!

It's a difficult time to be a person right now. I'd rather be a cat. But as we cannot, we can only keep going.

I'm cheering you on. I'll be thinking about you through the week. If not before, I hope to see you in OT next week!

Currently watching Reply 1994 for the first time - I have only started now because:

1. I am quite fond of Yoo Yeon Seok after RDTK (this is the first time I have watched his drama)

2. I am in the minorities that can never seem to fall in love with 1997 and 1988 even though I LOVE both Seo In Guk and Park Bo Gum a lot.
I finished R97 but it was lukewarm (I know, what is wrong with me??) and I can't never finished R88, even after trying twice, I still stuck on episode 8 (the episodes are just so SO long and the sets are too dark that it made me dooze off due to the lack of lights)

The funny thing is, I knew heads on who the husbands are in all 3 series and R94 was the only one where my favorite oppa isn't the husband. So I was ready for some heartbreak (especially after reading people's reviews and comments), but what do you know, Jung Woo is so charming that I forgot YYS, who I find a bit green in this drama.

On the first 1 or 2 episodes, I was quite icked by the fact that the OTP were so like real siblings especially with the undies scene (Oppa rearranging NJ's undies and NJ took Oppa's dirty clothes off his body), I had to google first to ensure that they are not real siblings (and the reason why to make it crystal clear) to continue watching. But then after that episode where Oppa-ya backhugged Na Jung who was feeling upset on the anniversary of her brother's death, the chemistry just clicked. This dotting, manly, and mature side of Oppa-ya completely stole my heart and sells the romance a lot more than the other 2 series for me. And the way he treats NJ's parents? Super love!

The first few episodes are comedic gold. I am the kind that normally don't find toilet jokes funny but man, this show had me rolling on the floor laughing. The episode where everyone got stomachache is hillarious! I haven't laughed so much after Jeaolusy Incarnate ended. And after adoring Kim Sung Kyung's hillarious performance in R88 (my husband can be a little bit silly like Kim Sajang sometimes, so I love his character!), it's a nice surprise to see him in R94 as a college student. He is such a good actor that after few episodes, I already forgot that he is a dad in the other series and totally buys that he's a freshman.

On top of all, I love all the characters in R94. Maybe because I am a city girl? I like the Seoul setting better, and I can relate to the college freshman experience as I also moved to other country for uni and lived in a boarding house (where I met my husband!).

Hafta to admit that the series does get a bit slow midway of the series. It gets horribly draggier towards last quarter of the series, but still it's a fun and heartwarming watch. This is the only Reply series that I marathoned to the point that I skipped a day of work to keep on watching, and when I am working, I feel giddy just from the anticipation that I will be home soon to watch the next episode. It's been awhile since I feel this way about a drama!

And random thoughts this week:

As Kim Seul Gi comes up this week in DB news for her cameo in WFKBJ, if there is a next installment of Reply series, I really really hope they would cast KSG, she deserves the spotlight for once! But she cameod on R94 already and they always cast fresh-faced idol so I know this isn't going to happen. But seriously, how funny (funnier?) it would be! For extra fun, they can cast boys from her previous lovelines to get that shipping war even hotter (we know how much the writer loves that) i.e. Yoon Do Joon, Nam Joo Hyuk, Kwak Shi Yang, Yoon Hyun Min.

I'm also charmed by Yoo Yeon Seok after RDTK and thought of checking out Reply 1994.

Is he not that good in there? I knew of Jung Woo's charms since the first time I saw him in You're The Best Lee Shoon Shin. So it's double the reasons for me to watch this.

I'll probably start after WFKBJ ends.........noooooooo!!!

Yoo Yeon Seok was good (as I said a bit green, but still very charming), in fact he is so good that he started one of the biggest (shipping) war I have seen in DB's comments sections ?

It's just that I thought I would be Team Chillbongie (I have never seen Jung Woo in anything), but I think at the end of the day, I am on Team Najung and my preference towards her husband is who Najung always likes. And again, I just adore Oppa's character so much that by the time Chillbong came in later episodes, there's no more room for him in my shipping heart.

(Spoiler)

The only time I wavered is towards the very very later episodes when I thought the Najung and Oppa have both moved on from each other because of their non-succesful long distance relationship.

(End spoiler)

In saying that though, whoever you end up shipping, you should really watch this! Now I get why do people fall in love with the Reply series. All the characters are real, relatable, annoying yet lovable.

Jdrama: We Married as Job / Nigeru wa Haji da ga Yaku ni Tatsu ... I just finished it and really enjoyed it! I liked how they presented some social issues. It felt different than a typical kdrama, except... the scene were the male lead almost got hit by the truck of doom!

DVD surveys of Goblin and Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo to international fans are now open! This is only for the producers to estimate the demand for the DVD based on Korean and international fan responses. There is no obligation at this point nor payment needed. It is just a survey!

For those who are not familiar with the process, original DVD/Blurays of korean dramas undergo a long process of the producers/company and fans (daum cafe) communicating with each other to decide if a DVD will be even made. Preorder survery is first, for the Daum Cafe mods to present their case that there are a lot of fans willing to buy the DVD. There are instances when the interest is low and surveys does not justify the costs to produce a DVD, then no official DVD will be made (e.g. Moon Lovers Scarlet Heart Ryeo, Six Flying Dragons, Jeju Island Gatsby).

After a decision is made to produce the DVD, then the company and production staff (director, writer, actors) will discuss what to include in the DVD (cast commentary, episode scripts, photo book, drama memorabilia, post cards, etc, BTS, deleted scenes). So it is a long process, but they do include the input of fans, especially if the demand is high with international fans, they would include ENGLISH subtitles!

I prefer Kdramas but japanese movies to korean ones. Some are exceptions, Kim Ki Duk's movies and for example the Missing (child) from last year.
I watched last week Nigeru wa Haji da ga Yaku ni Tatsu somebody recomended and it was painfull but little bit funny. I tried other ones but couldn't go trough. I think the japanese culture is far far away from mine. Especially in dramas it gets so ridiculous that I can't stand it. Movies have it's own poetry but dramas are too slow and I still don't understand a culture where you have to suffer, which drives you sometimes to suicide, because your boss is older or a man. I have a deep respect to everybody, but if somebody is not right you should have the right to disagree and to protect yourself. I know some japanese mothers and they show more affection to their children living outside Japan, because here we kiss them, hug them and openly love them. If they're not doing so well at shool it's not the end of the world. But they told us that they've never seen their parents to hug or kiss themself, etc...
Korean dramas are as they are but I can get a good laugh and relate to the characters. There is some good story and not everything is about sex like in most of the us productions. I loved Sex in the city, but it was well written and witty. I'm not into the kpop culture, just reading some news and I don't understand the crazy fans and haters. I think everybody is doing his/her job and they can be so pretty and handsome but they have their rights to have their lives also and we shouldn't be so into it. Everybody likes to point with their finger on others but there are some limits that shouldn't be crossed. The korean fans are really crazy.

J-dramas are more my speed. They're also shorter and storytelling, when done well, is tighter and very solid. They also do great slice-of-life stuff, something I feel K-dramas have yet to master.

Hello, Beanies!

Does anyone watch their K-Ds on t.v.? If so how?

I used to use the Viki app via Xbox, but it has been 5 episodes of Weight Lifting Fairy that I have not been able to watch because the Viki server is not working. I'm hoping to finish watching the Fairy and the Mermaid on the big screen vs on my mobile. (1st world problems, I know; nonetheless, the struggle is real).

This probably isn't the answer you were looking for, but I have my main pc (in a low-noise case) behind the tv, using the tv as my monitor. I switch tv inputs between computer & cable box as needed, but it's 95% on the computer lately.

I'm typing this while sitting in my recliner with a wireless keyboard in my lap while the armrest has a wireless mouse sitting on a mousepad clipped to a clipboard. First world solutions :)

My tv is "smart", but I don't use that and I have it's internet connection disabled because:
1: It's apps aren't nearly as useful to me as a computer browser.
2: Connected tvs are hackable and some manufacturers use them to spy on you -- I trust my PC security more than I will ever trust any smart tv.

I use my Samsung Smart TV, which has built-in apps to watch Viki and DF.

I almost exclusively watch the former on my TV, because I've found that when I try to stream something on Viki on my laptop, I have quality issues (even though I have Viki Pass and everything should be high quality), whereas through the TV app, Viki shows are always fully HD with no problems. DF is good either way. For shows not on Viki or DF, I connect my computer to my TV via an HDMI cord and mirror the screen.

If you don't have a smart TV, then Roku or Chromecast would work. Or using an HDMI cord to connect directly.

Like Lord Cobol, I have a computer plugged on to the TV through an HDMI cable, and a wireless keyboard. It solves a lot of problems trying to navigate the Smart TV menu with a remote. You just need to be sure that the computer has access to the internet either through an ADSL cable if the TV is close to the router, or through wifi.

Real life commitments settled (for a while), back to drama land in full swing.

Romantic Doctor: I was intrigued by the ratings and I thought I should try it while it was airing. And I have to say I can see why the show is loved. It is entertaining - good acting, writing. Though sometimes it’s a bit over the top, sometimes the plot starts to feel repetitive, and also I have to look away when all that blood is being splattered everywhere. But other than that, it’s quite a nice watch.
Seo Hyun JIn - I knew and loved from Oh Hae Young, others were all new to me. Dr. Kim is doing a great job. I had no idea who Yoo Yeon-seok was, but after that episode one’s.... ahem.... (*fans self*) I sat up and googled the guy and realized that he was the famous Chilbongie from Reply 94. ( I couldn’t help but notice how beautiful and sturdy YYS’s arms are. I don’t think I’ve been so attracted to a Kdrama guy’s arms before.) The OTP hotness/ tension was at its height in the beginning episodes and as it is approaching the end I don’t seem to be as enamoured by them as I was in the beginning. But I guess that’s mostly true for romance in any drama.
Almost all secondary characters are likable - esp that cutie pie nurse Doldam Dimples. Also currently smitten by the actor playing Do In Bum - his smiles and the way he tries to hold back his tears when Dr. Kim admonishes him.. Aigoo, my poor heart.
I don’t see the show having any rewatch potential for myself (except perhaps a certain scene in Ep. 1), but nonetheless it’s a solid watch.

Marriage Contract: Many JI lovers seemed to enjoy MC, so I gave it a go. On the whole it was worth a watch. Though I have to say, a few episodes were too melodramatic for my taste. The leading lady’s acting was by no means cringeworthy, but it wasn’t that great either (imo), as I struggled to connect with her character/acting a few times. The highlight of the drama for me was the discovery of that hot ajusshi. I thought ajusshis are not usually my type, but oh boy was I wrong! I loved playing hide and seek with Ajusshi’s dimples, waiting for him to smile or purse his lips. Ajusshi can act, ajusshi looks hot in a blazer, and yes ajusshi CAN KISS. :)

Weightlifting fairy: I’m probably the minority for this one on DB. Let me start by saying that I love the actress playing Bok Joo. She is talented and is playing her part with conviction. However, I had a hard time believing when I read that the writer of Oh My Ghost (and co-writer of King of HS) wrote this drama. King of HS and Oh my Ghost are dramas that would any day make into my top 5 list - they are on a totally different level for me. For example, in OMG and King of HS almost all secondary characters are well-written and so likeable. In Bok Joo, the only side character I cared for was Bok-Joo’s friend - the tall, short haired one. Kang Ki Young (Sous Chef from OMG) - such a talented guy - is just wasted in this one. The whole weightlifting team, the two coaches, Bok Joo’s dad - I couldn’t get emotionally invested in any one of them. So if the writer is the same, I’m just wondering if it’s the direction that’s made such a difference between the two(three) shows.
Nam Joo-hyuk: Hmm.. How do I put this... Dare I say he is one of the reasons I dropped the show? I agree that he is INSANELY cute, but that poor guy cannot act. I don’t remember him being so bad in Moon Lovers (Maybe because he looked splendid in the sageuk garb, maybe the fact that he had a comparatively minor role so his incompetency wasn’t that evident?) I have seen spectacular rom-com actors, so there were many instances in this drama when NJH gave an expression and I was either cringing or I was like ‘this is it?’ I know that for the pretty a lot is forgiven, but I just couldn’t make myself look past that unfortunately. Which is funny because when they introduced the second lead, the doctor, I very shallowly thought ‘Nah, he isn’t half as cute as NJH, I’ll be alright, sailing smoothly on the first lead’s ship.’ But NJH’s inadequate acting plus the fact that the doctor was kind and gentle to Bok Joo even though he wasn’t romantically interested in her - all combined to make the doctor a much more attractive guy to me than NJH ever was.

Love020: Seeing how it is a romance drama and how so many people loved it, I was SO sure I’d love it to bits too. But! All I see is a lot of pretty on screen, not able to connect with anyone. I’m wondering if I’m getting a bit too old for young adult romances (ANDWAEEEE) Also I read somewhere that the kisses are a disappointment because the leading lady apparently doesn’t pull her weight in those scenes. I dunno if I should invest so much time into a romance drama just to be disappointed later with lacklustre skinship.

We married as a job: Again High Expectation is the villain of this story. Heard good things about it, watched it more than half way through, but sadly had to drop it. I loved the leading lady, but much as I tried, I couldn’t warm up to the male lead. I didn’t hate him or anything - I just couldn’t like him as much as I wanted to. :(

Just started: 1% of something.

Many of the hit shows have disappointed you. I dropped Love o2o after 5th episode too. All shinny and pretty and too animated. This is just the beginning.

We Married as a Job turned out to be my favourite romance period 2014-2016.

Doctor Kim is too dramatic. Its fun but still too dramatic and less serious that it looks. It tries to be a big brother but hilariously fails. I'm enjoying it though.

I guess you have just started on Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo and hasn't caught Nam Joo Hyuk's improvement in acting?

Actually, I was charmed almost right from the start. Then I noticed all the small details in his expressions and how natural he was slipping into the role and making Joon Hyung one of the most lovable characters I've seen.

Now after ep 15, no one can tell me that Nam Joo Hyuk cannot act without getting a response from me.

I know that personal opinions differ and what's great to someone may not be to another. But I find it very hard to believe that one can objectively view Nam Joo Hyuk's acting now and conclude that he cannot act.

Of course, "objective" is something that's always tricky.

I think you really should finish WFKBJ cause Nam Joo Hyuk improved a lot like.....at first I was annoyed with the too much harsh teasing sometimes but then when he learned his mistakes etc...I love it

That emotional growth is actually written pretty darn good

I think Nam Joo Hyuk delivers his role pretty well in weightlifting. Yeapp, he has a long way to be called as a good actor but I would like to see the growth of him as an actor because weightlifting fairy actually succeeds makes me see him in a new light.

I didnt drop WFKBJ and I do agree NJH is not giving something spectacular. Yes he is improving but I am in the minority, his crying scenes still made me cringe a bit. I honestly dont get why so many praises and try to rewatch the scenes but still cannot connect that much. But in other scenes he is enjoyable to watch, still have a long way to go in acting. But he is better compared to his previous works.

Hi @Sera

Have you watched ep 15? His crying scenes are better than most kdrama actors including way more experienced ones.

But if you have and still feel the same then I guess it's really different strokes for different folks. Though in cases like this, it's totally polar opposites :P

I think I am starting to sound like some cheerleader for Nam Joo Hyuk fanclub or something. Nah...I have no real bias. I'm just excited to discover a promising actor and thoroughly enjoying his performance in WFKBJ right now.

Hwarang: Came here for Minho, stayed here FOR HANSUNG MY PRECIOUS PUPPY, LET NOONA TAKE CARE OF YOU. Okay, actually, I love most things about this drama, cheesiness and all, and I find all the boys and their backstories fascinating, but Hansung is the one I have a huuuuuuge soft spot for. I hope he doesn't become a sacrificial lamb to generate drama in the third act.

Weightlifting Fairy: I'll never be ready go let go of Bokju and Joonhyung, and I. Want. More LSK+NJH. Some viewers may say that repeating actor couples inhibits growth, but HAVE THEY SEEN THE CHEMISTRY? Because the Lee Sungkyung and Nam Joohyuk pairing was more than the sum of its parts--they became better together and their sweet dynamic was just so genuine.

The Legend of the Blue Sea: I was one of the biggest non-believers before this aired (because JJH always seems like the sassy girl and I never watched LMH post-Heirs), and yet I'm still enjoying it.

Oh my Geumbi: Heo Jungeun is phenomenal. It breaks my heart that WLFKB, TLOTBS and this drama are competing because they all deserve attention.

Goblin: Honestly, at this point, I'm only watching the Grim Reaper's and Sunny's scenes. I'm fascinated by their reincarnation part and yet the drama is so stingy with it. Their respective bromance and unnie-dongseng relationships with Shin and Euntak are interesting as well. I'm not feeling the chemistry between the Goblin and his child bride, so I no longer bother with their scenes.

Yay for Heo Jung-Eun's performance in Oh My Geum-Bi. I'm glad I watched this show.

Now, for something completely different. Apparently there's a Chinese program called Little Actors and Actresses.

Here, they act out a musical scene, Honor To Us All, from Disney's Mulan, ( which I have not seen ). The video shows a split screen of the film and the children acting.

She had such emotion in her eyes and I completely believed that she was a terminally ill child who was coming to terms with her mortality. And she had amazing rapport with the adult actors. I never find myself feeling Oh Jiho's acting (something about his facial expressions), but I think she brought out the best in him in this drama. :)

@genki-escapist.

On Goblin - thank you for saying the word I was looking for: 'stingy'. Show has been really stingy on Reaper/Sunny scenes and there are only 5 episodes left. Honestly I've had enough of the Goblin-Eun Tak 'will she or will she not pull the sword' dilemma and am hoping to see more of the Goryeo story.

In other words, give me more Reaper or give me death.

Um, that might be the same thing... :/

LOL, that quip!

Yeah, the Goryeo plot and how it ripples into the present-day is the most interesting aspect of the show for me. Wang Yeo is such a tragic and pitiful character and I wanted his arc to be given proper attention. I'm also pretty mad that they only had Shin and Sun interact so late in the game! So much time wasted on that fluffy Goblin-bride nonsense that never gets anywhere.

I feel like Kim Minjae is drawing too much from Yeo Jingoo's acting of Lee Hwon from Moon Embracing the Sun for his role in Goblin. If you compare Jingoo's acting there and Minjae's acting in Goblin.. he's using exactly the same facial movements, expressions that Jingoo did as Lee Hwon. I know they look similar, but the nuance of his acting there felt way too familiar of young Lee Hwon. If I were Minjae, I'd try to break away from that image. It's one thing to be thought they look similar, but if he's also gonna imitate the acting down to a tee, that's an entirely different thing. He should find his originality as an actor.

He has time! I love watching both of these kids' dramas and movies, what with their talents and all. Even the tiny cameo YJG had in the Tazza movie with TOP in there was cause for a rewind/replay. As soon as I heard that YJG voice, I was glued to the screen to see him as well as hear his voice. Ha! But I think KMJ can get into his own soon. Hwaiting, for both of them!

Happy first Open Thread of the New Year, everyone! Here is an article I just read about fashion retailing in Korea that I thought might interest some of you (although it doesn't detail exactly where ALL THOSE COATS are coming from ?):

Question: does anyone know where to get an audio of the "WHAAAT?" from Weightlifting Fairy?

cool! Thanks so much for the WHAT!

I first noticed it way back in Bali (!) but between WLF and Goblin, the coats are now incredibly distracting for me.* Like, I'm looking forward to Spring shows so the coats will go away. In WLF 15 when JH's birth mother gave him a gift I said out loud to the screen, "oh, I hope it's a coat 'cuz he NEEDS another one ?" and then just cackled.

*because I really, really love coats. A lot.

Anybody watching the new season of New Journey to the West? It's hilarious! Never seen Na PD like this before. The addition of Kyu and Mino makes the dynamics a bit different. Super funny!

Also, Legendary Shuttle, the drama special that starred Lee Jihoon, is now available in kbs' youtube channel with eng subs!

DramaFever just release Scarlet Heart: Ryeo (Director's Cut) edition which has the 20 episodes again but with bonus footage not released in the international version. Thoughts fellow Beanies? I didn't know that there were different versions released. I'm want to see the bonus footage but would rather not suffer through another 20 episodes to do so haha...

There were indeed 2 and even 3 versions floating around at some point or another. Some dedicated beanies watched all of them. Honestly, I don't think if I have the heart to watch 20 episodes of the director's cut now.

I do enjoy listening to the OST though, regularly. They are good songs on their own, just felt out of place in the drama sometimes.

Hey, beanies! It's been a crappy week all around, but kdrama is still there for me.

Goblin continues to satisfy; that scene of the two male leads striding like backlit badasses bringing home the leeks just cracked me up. I hope it ends as strongly as it's been going lately.

I don't normally watch Rom-coms, but I've been so stressed lately that I felt like I needed a shallow-as-a-saucer show. So I picked up Cinderella and her Four Knights, which - whoa to the shallow. I'm bingeing it like popcorn. Though I have to say that the longer it goes on, the more I dislike Hye-ji. What kind of a weirdo are you to be upset that your 6th grade boyfriend outgrew you at what, 30? :gives writers the side-eye: But Jung Il-woo's little crooked smile makes up for it, at least.

So I'm deciding what to buy next for the library & could use y'all's input. My most recent buys were Train to Busan, Hae-moo & Scarlet Heart; I'm deciding between K2, Bad Guys, Signal, and Descendants of the Sun. What do you think?

I haven't seen the K2 yet; out of the others, Bad Guys and Signal are very good, but dark and gritty rather than popcorn fare; Descendants is rather vacuous, but painless to watch. I guess it depends on the audience: for mass appeal, Descendants; for users who want something special, any of the other two.

I guess it depends on the audience

This is the thing. I prefer the dark-and-gritty & don't usually like romance or rom-coms. K2 was good in that it was 70% car chases & fight scenes (with one scene in a shower room of butt-nekkid, fit young men (with artful blurring so as not to invade their privacy, if you know what I mean, but still. Whoa.)

And Bad Guys was awesome even with the crappy subs I saw it with last - and the Viki version with real subs is super-awesome. Also, Ma Dong-seok. :makes heart w/fingers:

But Signal...will time travel + detective ever not be awesome? No, it will never be not-awesome.

(Though I'm definitely buying Goblin as soon as it's out, because I have a list of kdrama watchers to pawn it off on.)

Well, if the strategy is pawning it off yourself, better get one that you are passionate about :) . I'd go for Signal then; Bad Guys was a little more case-of-the-week as I recall; Signal is better for binge watching, ending on a high, and asking the local library for more stuff like this :) .

So far, Train to Busan and Two Weeks appear to be our big titles, circulation-wise. I expect circ numbers for "The Handmaiden" (which I've already ordered) to be through the roof.

I was wondering if anyone has recommendations on a good romance melo in the style of Secret / Mask / Que Sera Sera; I am in the mood for a little twisted-romance makjang :-) . I have started watching Angel's Temptation, but it isn't gripping me so far; granted I am only on episode 4, but everything is too cardboard...

When i see people's list of upcoming dramas i realized i had none that i particularly look forwards too..*sighs* But then moment ago i read that Siwan's the King loves has the female lead and second male lead as otp, which i wasn't aware of before. I didn't plan to watch it but now maybe. Apparently it's based on a novel too which i didn't know either lol I love Siwan acting but after K2 and Yoona character in KL made me cringe so much that i didn't feel motivated enough. now just pray that they won't change the novel too much and keep the otp intact. The 3 leads entangled relationship, the anti-hero obsession over his friends' love is sth i'd like to see. ^^

That aside, here continue praying for Kim Jiwon to be cast as Soah in Bride of the water god. or just in anything, really.

Happy Friday all!

Apologies in advance to non-UK based beanies as I'll be popping up on these open threads over the next couple weeks in an attempt to organise a DB 10th birthday celebration somewhere in central London.

There were a few of you who showed interest, so please indicate your preferred activity and dates here:

I'm sorry to have to resort to this rather annoying method to spread the word around, but I'm afraid I can't think of any other way. I've already had a response (thanks @wansywoo!) so fingers crossed that those of you who need to see this will do so somehow! x
